Welcome, 2017 Holidays! ‘Tis the Season, but, to do what…? This Season represents the last hurrah of 2017, and sets the stage to welcome 2018. Traditionally, this is the time for reflection and review. While we’re all reviewing the past year, the highs and lows tend to stand out. The highs are met with congratulation and recognition. The lows are sheepishly met with an admission that might call for improvement. Perhaps this admission will lead to a desire for change, and that desire will lead to action. There is an old Southern expression: “If you keep on doing what you’re doing, you’re going to keep on getting what you got!” I suppose that you can look at the Holidays as a challenge, but I like to think of them as an opportunity…!

This issue will mark the one-year anniversary for me. It was one year ago that I took the reins of Muscle Media Magazine as Editor-in-Chief. What an opportunity, Indeed…! I’ve had one year of feedback to get a feel for what you want to hear about. While we all, here, at MMM appreciate your continued support, I wanted to give a personal “Shout-Out” of thanks to my remarkable Staff, our talented corps of contributors & writers, and especially to you readers that make it all possible. I read each and every “Letter-To-The-Editor”. They continue to give me a sense of direction for each issue. Please, keep them coming, as we have some exciting new features to unveil in 2018…!

Just a side-note, here. The Holidays usually involve an increase in social activities that are outside of your usual daily routine. If you are on an established schedule or a program, this could get you off-track. I am already seeing evidence of this in my Private Practice. I see some very highly-tuned athletes that adhere to strict programs, and they seek advice/counsel as to how they should deal with the inevitable upset to their rigidly-enforced daily routines. I offer several options. They could throw caution-to-the-wind, abandon their program for the Holidays, and pick up again in the New Year (Read: NOT an option). They could avoid all the gatherings and parties, and faithfully stick with their demanding programs (Read: NOT a lot of fun). Or, they could take a lesson from the USMC and “Improvise, Adapt, & Overcome”. In other words, make an informed decision about your actions, but remember that you will be accountable. These athletes and their situations represent the extremes of discipline, conditioning, and performance. But, more than likely, we will all be confronted with similar choices and accountability. A program is not meant to be assessed when everything is perfectly situated. The true test comes when things are out-of-theordinary. Try not to take all the fun out of the Holidays, but make informed decisions. (OK, OK… Enough Psychobabble…!)

In this Holiday issue, be sure to take a look at Rogers article about tidying up at the end of the year, and finishing on a high-note. I try to dove-tail his suggestions with a cautionary look at some ways you might unknowingly sabotage your best-madeplans. Our resident IFBB Pro, Joe, shares several articles. From attempting to spotreduce, to analysis of push-ups, the hard-earned knowledge comes from his years of experience in the “Old-School-Of-Hard-Knocks”. Justin breaks down the essentials of a pre-workout cocktail. A long-time Friend & Colleague (and new contributing author); Chuck, offers his considerable biomechanical and kinesiological expertise in the first of a six-part series human movement and performance. Our resident chef and publisher, Matt has a holiday recipe for you. Wow… What a Year… So Long, 2017…! Do you have a question? Please Yours in good health,

just ask. We may even publish it in our "Letters-To-The-Editor" section. Sent to: drtom@musclemediaonline.com
