T
hank you for taking a look at our Saint Cloud Special Edition. I am so thankful to have
been an eye witness to an incredible event. I must admit, when I went up to the Granite City Classic with the outdoor temperature in the teens below zero, I didn’t know what to expect for Hockey Day. With over 30,000 hours of time invested, and with over 300 volunteers and almost 100 sponsors involved, weather is one thing that will keep the people away. Amazingly, three weekends later, things could not have been better, as the temperature soared to 46 degrees at the opening ceremony and continued unseasonably warm all the way through the outdoor concert. To cap off the Hockey Day festivities, who would have thought an outdoor concert by the Fabulous Armadillos would draw almost 10,000 people in January. From hanging out with the St. Cloud Alumni on Friday night before, during and after the game, through the concert, my time in St. Cloud was a blast. Mix in some great hockey games on Saturday and it is going to be really hard for another organizing committee to top this event. Please read more on this in my article on the making of Hockey Day. We also had a great time with all the special people that have made St. Cloud hockey special. My time in interviews with Husky Head Coach Bob Motzko and former coach Craig Dahl, and an interview with Dan Brooks, gave me an even higher appreciation for HerbBrooks and the Husky program. John Gilbert tells more in his piece on the Huskies. I also enjoyed my time getting to know Mark Parrish better. Read his amazing story as he talks about his career, including his recent recovery from his issues with concussions. For those now reading this in St. Cloud, please make a point of thanking all the sponsors and individuals, who made Hockey Day 2018 an EPIC event. Without their hard work this would not have happened. Please also make a point of thanking our sponsors, who without them, we would not be able to produce this keepsake magazine. If you like what you see in this magazine, please feel free to share with all of your hockey friends and families. If you have issues with it, please let me know. Sincerely,

The St. Cloud Icebreakers and Sartell/Sauk Rapids Storm’N Sabres kicked off a weekend celebration of the greatest game on earth with an entertaining, see-saw battle under the bright lights of Eastman Park. Sartell/Sauk Rapids trailed early and late in the contest but Anna Orth’s goal with 4:13 to play allowed the Storm’N Sabres to skate off with a 3-3 tie with the Icebreakers to get Hockey Day Minnesota’s weekend started off right. The tie is the second of the season between the two neighboring rivals who battled to a 2-2 stalemate on Dec. 19 at Bernick’s Arena in Sartell. Brooke Walters set up Orth’s tying goal after getting Sartell/Sauk Rapids on the board with her 22nd goal of the season late in the second period with her team trailing 2-0. Madison Mollner knotted the game at 2-2 near the five-minute mark of the third but St. Cloud’s Allie Cornelius scored her second of the game and team-leading 30th of the season just before the halfway mark of the period to restore the Icebreakers’ one-goal cushion. “We usually have like 10 fans at our games and there was people watching, my family and my friends were all here,” Cornelius, a St. Cloud State commit, told Mick Hatten of the St. Cloud Times. “To score a couple of goals — I have to give it up for my (linemates) — it was cool. St. Cloud’s Gabbie Rud opened the game’s scoring 8:59 into the first period before setting up Cornelius to double the Icebreakers’ lead 9:05 into the second. Cornelius added a secondary assist on Rud’s goal for a three-point night. The Storm’N Sabres peppered St. Cloud goaltender Emily Musielewicz with 42 shots, MINNESOTA HOCKEY MAGAZINE

including 17 in the opening period alone, but she blanked Sartell/Sauk Rapids until Walters’ tally at 13:10 of the second. The Icebreakers were outshot 42-29 but dominated the special teams’ battle, going 2-for-3 on the power play while killing off all six Sartell/Sauk Rapids power-play opportunities. “We moved the puck on the power play and I thought we got good shots,” Sartell/Sauk Rapids head coach Marty Anderson told Mick Hatten of the St. Cloud Times. “But Musielewicz is very good and she wasn’t giving up many second-chance rebounds. If she does give up a rebound, it goes to the right spot.” — MHM Staff Report
