DEAR READER It DOES make a difference. These days, people talk and write so much about how we need to take care of the environment. To many of us, it seems like a confusing task to figure out where to start and where to end in order to contribute. Instead of getting scared of it, think about how you already do a lot of things that are good for the environment. You visit flea markets and find things and furniture that have been thrown out by other people. You bring these things home and use them in your interior design instead of buying new items. That ’s a great way of taking care of the environment. You’re being creative and you’re looking for new ways to use these old things, adding new life to them. When you decide to cook with whatever raw materials that grow in nature right now, you also contribute. In this edition of the magazine, we have included a series of articles for a small wedding theme where we focus both on recycling and on utilizing nature and what nature offers us at this time of the year. You can easily decorate your home for a party without spending lots of money and without putting a strain on the environment. Actually, all the flowers that we have used in our flower articles grow right outside your doorstep right now. We hope that we can inspire you to go for a walk and bring nature home with you. Even if you’re only doing something small, it does make a difference. Enjoy reading!

Rustic charm
THE MILL OF KÆRBY Four years ago, Lars and I decided to leave the town of Kondrup where we’d been living and running JDL on a beautiful, old farm for many years. We immediately fell in love with Kærby Mølle which is located in the middle of the most amazing nature, featuring the river valley and a lake right on the doorstep. The house was built in 2010 and it ’s actually very modern in terms of layout and choice of materials, but we’ve spent the last four years implementing some changes to make the house fit our favorite style. You’ve been able to follow some of those projects here in the magazine, including the one where we exchanged some of the modern sliding doors for old shutters in the hallway and in other places.

My old Vespa scooter ”lives” in the hallway and we rarely use it. Before we got it, it was part of a permanent exhibition in California and we consider it to be a piece of art in our home. We found the big tree trunk in the stream and debarked it, and now it functions as coat rack and lamp stand. We love the colors of nature so our home is full of shades of green and brown. We’ve got big windows throughout the house and actually, we don’t have any normal windowsills. This is a bit of a challenge for someone who likes to put up bits and pieces but on the other hand, we feel as if we were in the middle of nature almost anywhere in the house.

If you’ve got lots of doors and windows like in this house, you can place some light furniture in front of them just like we’ve done. The old workshop table was given a ”new ” tabletop made of old planks and now we use it as a bar cart. By attaching some boards, we’ve added a rustic look to the kitchen on the kitchen/washing island, the toe recess and the range hood. On the following pages, you can see how we did it. This is an easy way of changing the look of your kitchen, and as you can remove it later, this is also a good solution if you live in a rented home.
