First, I want to introduce myself and share my journey!
I’m Neliza, the founder of Inner Tranquility, where healing truly happens from deep within yourself through a holistic approach to having a positive pregnancy experience. I help professional women experience optimal health, well-being, and peace of mind through pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
As a former CardioVascular Sonographer, relentless workaholic, and seasonal world traveler. I never really thought about settling down and having a family.
And if I did, I’d say, “I would be married for at least four years, traveling and enjoying my marriage with my husband before starting a family. If I did want kids, I would be happy with just one."
Since I was a relatively fit and active person, I thought I would be working through my pregnancy until my water broke.
Boy, was I wrong!
I enjoyed working. I truly loved waking up every morning excited to go to work and start my day. Some say I was a workaholic, yet I knew exactly how to enjoy my life by combining work and traveling. Blissfully, I loved every minute of it. I loved my career; I loved experiencing different cities all over the US and gaining new knowledge from exceptional hospitals. And during my time off, I would also travel the world. Life was beautiful; it was perfect for me. I couldn’t have asked for a better life guided by divine power.
When I met my husband, I was 35. We both agreed on a 2-4 year plan to start a family; however, he was worried about my age. Were we able to conceive closer to the age of 40? Honestly, I didn’t think much of it because I knew I
was healthy, active, and always mindful of what I ate. Little did I know my life was about to change completely.
A few months later, I found out I was pregnant. Immediately I could feel all my senses heightened. I started feeling ill with dizziness, distinct nausea, and irritability. I just didn’t feel normal. As my symptoms progressed, my body started feeling weak, I experienced a loss of appetite, and I could not hold any fluids down. I felt as if my health was depleting to nonexistence.
Then I was hospitalized at six weeks of pregnancy. I felt as if my body was attacking me. I started to lose myself, almost unrecognizable. I was in constant pain, hungry, and dizzy. After a few trips back and forth to the hospital, I was on bed rest almost nine weeks into pregnancy; the worst was yet to come. Not only was I no longer working, but I also had a PICC line through my arms into my heart to nourish my body with fluids and multivitamins. Here was this career-driven individual whose identity was attached to her work, who loved being active, nature, and traveling - into what felt like a home prison, feeling alone, and in misery.
My entire life crumbled right before my eyes. For someone who enjoyed working, forced to be at home, surrounded by only my thoughts and my lifeline connected to me at all costs. All of the anxieties and worries started to flood my mind. Slowly I was losing myself bit by bit. I gradually felt more unhappy and anxious as the loneliness began to set in more and more. I was unable to do anything without any assistance. I remember saying to myself, “who am I”. Losing my identity day by day was one of the most challenging moments I experienced during and after birth.
No one prepared me for what was to come. I had no idea how much pregnancy can impact a woman's emotional being. Pregnancy primarily focuses on the growing baby; no one considers the emotional exhaustion we moms go through during these delicate transitions. There are many practical approaches moms are instructed to implement before and after pregnancy. Yet what about the mother's mental health?
I know not everyone experiences this type of pregnancy; however, pregnancy is physically and emotionally draining.
If I had a choice, I would have worked while pregnant, which is what most
