Dear Reader
Lovely Memories
I think it must be something that happens as we get older – reminiscing; becoming a bit – or a lot – nostalgic and at times melancholy. That’s how I felt as I was looking through the photos for this issue of the magazine. All of a sudden, all of these memories of my childhood appeared in my mind. Images from days gone by when the sky was always blue and summers were definitely much warmer. One of the plants that I associate with the Danish summer – and with my childhood – is field scabious. I’ve picked many bouquets of this wildflower on our walks along the sea in western Jutland, where I come from. My grandmother and my mother taught me the joy of picking wildflowers from an early age. We never went for a walk in the woods, by a lake or by the sea without picking something or other. Rushes could be dried and wildflowers tied into the most wonderful bouquets. And it wasn’t an infrequent occurrence that we practically put our lives on the
line climbing and reaching for the most impassable spots. We often used field scabious to make wreaths for our hair or just small bouquets for grandma’s pretty glass vases. All of us who love flea markets and wonderful old treasures also collect old glassware to some extent, including our new writer and editorial colleague Rikke Vinter. She’s been working with old items and running stores selling these for many years. If anyone is a collector, it’s definitely her and there’s hardly a thing that she doesn’t happen to have in her car or at home. When she was assigned to do the research for the article on old glass, it turned into a far-reaching as well as surprising project. Check out the article to see what she discovered while enjoying the amazingly beautiful photos, which will hopefully inspire you to bring your own glassware to light.
Enjoy your summer!
Lonnie & Vivian
Who are we, and why the name Jeanne d’Arc Living? The French heroine Jeanne d’Arc was an amazing woman with an unusually strong will and sense of purpose. She didn’t ascribe to the common opinions of her time of what one should or should not do. Instead she went her own way and fought till the very end for her beliefs. In using her name in connection with our company, we do so with the utmost respect for this remarkable woman. We also feel that there’s a lesson to be learned from her – even now, 600 years later. We should all have the courage to go our own ways and dare to stand out from the crowd. From the very beginning these have been some of our main goals for the company. We continuously aim to think outside the box and stand up for what we believe. Today part of the company is a publishing business that publishes our own magazines and books. The common thread in everything we do is the French-Nordic country style. We publish a magazine that keeps to the style, avoiding distracting advertisements within the magazine. This is, of course, a challenge. It requires a substantial amount of editorial material and that we do most of it ourselves in order to make ends meet. The magazine is published in eight languages and sold in many parts of the world. We also run a wholesale business with our own designs produced both here in Denmark and abroad. The company has been around for almost ten years and is jointly owned by Lonnie Würtz Jensen and Vivian Christensen. If you’d like to learn more about us and the company, you can follow our everyday life on our blog. All the best,

Gelskov
Manor
4
At the end of this wonderful cobbled avenue lined with chestnut trees you'll find the beautiful Gelskov Manor. A large, natural garden with wonderful statues is laid out around the manor.
5
The main building was built in 1917 but the actual estate dates all the way back to the 15th century. The oldest building is the west wing. Dating back to the late 16th century, this beautiful, old timber frame structure is the oldest of the existing buildings. Located by the town of Ringe on Fyn, the manor is owned by the Schaffalitzky de Muckadell family. They’ve rented out all of the beautiful manor estate to the couple Anette and Heine, who run an antiques store and a B&B here and also have their private residence here.
6
7
8
Wide plank floors, stucco ceilings and beautiful paneled windows help to create the grand atmosphere at the manor. Gelskov is furnished with beautiful antiques and lovely details. You’ll find plenty of beautiful china, fine silverware and lovely furniture. Anette and Heine have always loved these beautiful, old things so they love living in these surroundings that go perfectly with their style and taste in interior decorating. Their preferred style is French but you’ll also find many Swedish and Danish items in the decor.
9
Heine inherited his interest in the style from his paternal grandmother, who was a great collector. She followed her heart in her collecting and wasn’t exactly an expert. But that’s what Heine has become. Heine and Anette are both passionate collectors but they deďŹ nitely have a great amount of knowledge about the items as well. Being able to tell their customers about the background or any other interesting facts relating to each item is an important part of their business.
10
11
12
The store primarily offers interior from France, Sweden and Denmark so there’s plenty to look at. The store is located in one part of the main building but there is a section in one of the old wings of the manor as well. The couple is very interested in art and Anette is a painter so the store has ongoing exhibits of paintings and sculptures.
13
The manor offers six rooms that are rented out as a B&B. Every room is uniquely furnished with wonderful antiques. If you’ve spent a night at Gelskov Manor and then return the following year, you can be sure that the room will have changed – because all furniture and accessories are for sale. Visitors greatly enjoy the fact that they can buy a small item to bring home as a memento.
14
15
16
Throughout the manor are evocative displays, and you can’t help but become inspired. Naturally, the beautiful rooms set the stage for a grandiose decor. The large, high-ceilinged rooms offer plenty of space for beautiful sculptures, heavy pieces of furniture and impressive crystal chandeliers.
17
Running and maintaining the manor is a large project, thus Anette and Heine are always thinking of new projects and activities. A few of the traditions include a spring market as well as a Christmas market on site. If you’d like to see more, visit www.gelskovgods.com.
