Dear Readers, Around here, we have a really nice tradition. We plan a Friday after work for making Christmas decorations and having dinner together. We clear the large tables in the cafeteria and fill them with materials. Susanne, our skilled floral decorator, runs the show. She does the shopping and goes to the woods to gather nature’s materials. She also lends a helping hand to whoever needs one. Once all the decorations are finished, we relax with wine and pizza. Last year, everybody took part. One of the ”girls” out here shared with us that she had decided to skip making an advent wreath and a decoration for her calendar candle this year. She has always hated doing it but felt like it was an obligation because ”that’s what you do when it’s Christmas.” Now, at the age of 46, she’d decided to put an end to it! She loves candles and uses a lot of them throughout the month of December – but she really can’t stand Christmas decorations. So why should she force herself ? The happy fact that she stopped by anyway just for the company – that’s a different story. I have so much respect for her decision and for her sticking to it! Oddly enough, throughout the month of December, we encountered several people on our photo shoots for the magazine and the Christmas book who echoed the same sentiment. Everyone has so many things on their To Do list every day. Things that can’t be skipped: cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, cooking... Life is full of duties and obligations. They’re a necessary part of everyday life. Some of them we like; others are carried out only out of duty. We also do things to help other people and make them happy. It’s a really nice thing, doing something that perhaps you don’t love for the sole purpose of making someone else happy. I definitely approve of this. But it is the case that there are certain tasks where perhaps it doesn’t make a great difference to anyone whether they’re done or not. Whether you make an advent wreath, for instance. So our advice to you is this: Do it if you want to, and if you don’t feel like it – don’t do it! In our opinion, time has run out for doing a bunch of things just because you’re ”supposed to.” These days, there’s not so much a question of right or wrong. Christmas is celebrated in many different ways – or perhaps not at all. You have to feel inside yourself what it is you actually want to do. Personally, I love to make decorations but I’m really not that good at baking. and I actually don’t love eating cookies either. So why make them? We can buy the cookies that we need from the baker’s, or my mother will probably bring a tin like she usually does. Because she loves to bake! luckily, we’re all different like that.

The FaIryTale CaSTle

 Doris started her career in Düsseldorf, which is a fashion and advertising city, in the fashion industry and later became a store manager with Fausto Santini. In 1992, she decided to enter advertising and started working as a stylist for photo shoots and film. She found a lot of success in her new job thanks to her strong sense for new trends and her impeccable taste. In 1995, Doris discovered an empty shop in the historic part of Düsseldorf, the socalled Carlstadt borough. This is where she opened her store Gute N8. The preferred color of the store and the products was her own personal favorite – white. The store sold beds and mattresses but also all kinds of interior relating to the bedroom and bathroom: Italian linens, beautiful nightgowns, cashmere shawls, fragrances, soap, etc. The store was beautifully furnished and very different from other, traditional bedding stores.
