Summer, Sun and Sand between your Toes … Now that is the life! And when the weather smiles upon us, then our country is simply the loveliest place to be. It just has its own indescribable charm... eating watermelon on the beach with extra crunch in the form of sand…drinking lukewarm water from a jug and swimming in the cool fjord or in the ocean between jellyfish and crabs…bike rides through the forest and taking a break at a roadside stall to buy fresh strawberries… Often these are the experiences, which for some reason or another latch onto our memory. One of my best summer holiday memories from last year is a day, where we rode bike on the small winding roads down to the Limfjord. The water was dead calm. A few cumulus clouds slipped quietly away in the blue, blue sky. Someone was fishing and others walked along the beach and collected stones and shells. We had many good talks that day. After walking, we sat down in the middle of the lyme grass and looked out over the water where a seagull snatched up a fish. We lay down and looked up at the clouds and played “what does that cloud look like”. We closed our eyes and listened to the splashing of the tiny waves at the water’s edge. We just lay there and enjoyed the silence. Since we did not want to scare the fish away, the conversation had to be a whisper and after a while not much was said. We just lay there and enjoyed this moment – and felt a closeness beyond the usual. Before we knew it five hours had gone by! Therefore, we would like to use this introduction as a loving request: Remember to leave room in your calendar for such moments. If each day is filled with tasks and experiences also during holiday, it will end up being stressful and hurried. So how about taking this issue of the magazine along in your bicycle basket and enjoying it during a quiet moment. Have a Wonderful Summer! Lonnie & Vivian

The Color Purple

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.” (Quotation; Alice Walker, ”The Colur Purple”)

4

The French-Nordic country style is often characterized by white, cream and quite delicate colours. However, once in a while a breath of fresh air in decorating can be wonderful and purple is a perfect idea. The colour spans from quite delicate almost pink to lavender and into various dark, deep purple and violet nuances. The different nuances can be combined indefinitely for example with pictures, textiles or simply with small splashes of colour in the form of knick-knacks and curiosities. Purple is a secondary colour and a mixture of the colours red and blue. It can both be a cold and a warm colour depending on how much red or blue is in the colour. However, most often it is considered to be cold. The colour purple has various symbolic meaning depending on where in the world you are or which religion you are. In Denmark, purple is the church’s colour for advent and Lent. In China, purple is the colour of mourning. The colour is often associated with luxury, elegance, feminism and romance. It is said that purple in a child’s room stimulates and develops the child’s imagination. 5

It is said that Leonardo Da Vinci believed that the affect of meditation was enhanced tenfold when done in purple light. Wagner composed his operas in a purple room for inspiration. We have used a lovely sunny summer day to decorate our pavilion with the colour purple. We will show you examples here of how the colour can be combined in both textiles, clothing, flowers and table settings. We have set the finest summer table in a lovely blending of purple flowers and tulle, matching porcelain, earthenware or ceramic, square candles and nostalgic motifs on place cards. A simple flower from the potted plant adorns each plate. The charming silver stems on the wine glasses have been given small purple lace ribbons. Place torn tulle in the middle of the table and between the lunch and dinner plates. Yes, even the chandelier has been decorated with strips of tulle. Combine the look with rustic candlesticks, which are a nice contrast to all of the feminine things. 6

7

The decoration with the tulle collar was made in a low, oblong dish. Start by letting a floral oasis absorb water until it is waterlogged. Place the floral oasis in the middle of the dish. Arrange the flowers close together in the floral oasis. Here we have used hydrangea, hollyhocks and garden gloxinia. You can also use many other flowers. Finish off by fixing a collar of tulle around the entire decoration. Make sure that the tulle does not go down so low that it gets wet. A huge heart made from weather-beaten tree branches has a romantic affair with a purple clematis. It intertwined itself with the heart. When you decorate with purple or another romantic colour it is important to add rustic things and rustic furniture so that it does not become too precious. If you do not have enough elements in purple then try visiting a thrift shop, a local flea market or a good applied arts or lifestyle boutique in the area. Here you will surely be able to find something you can use to complement. You can also decide to paint and patinate a piece of furniture or two in a pleasing purple colour. 8
