Cover / Voorblad The fallow deer Dama dama is not indigenous to Africa except the extreme north where it may have occurred in Egypt, Ethiopia and from Morocco to northern Tunisia. It was introduced to South Africa 145 years ago and has since dispersed widely, but sparsely.
COMMOTION OVER RHINO TRANSLOCATION The strong position of the minister of environmental affairs, Edna Molewa, in favour of the translocation of rhinos from the Kruger National Park, enjoys wide support from the most important role-players in the game industry. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is of the opinion that such a strategy should go hand in hand with proper biological management and the necessary attention to security and monitoring. Prof Wouter van Hoven, retired head of the Centre for Wildlife Management at the University of Pretoria, is convinced that rhinos on smaller private properties in a more protected environment will be able to breed at a faster rate than being poached. Wiaan van der Linde, vice-president of Wildlife Ranching SA (WRSA) and one of the game ranchers involved in the translocation plans, is outraged by the fact that the names of game ranchers involved in the scheme had been announced in the media in a very irresponsible manner, thereby exposing the relocated rhinos, game-ranch owners and their staff to great risks. He said that the entire transaction was subject to a process of transparency with experts from SANParks who, amongst other things, investigated security measures on these ranches. As a result of infighting the matter has now come to public attention, resulting in media reports and adverse consequences. It is a pity that serious efforts by responsible role-players to find a solution to this pressing problem are thwarted by overzealous journalism.
