eter Wilkes has been appointed as the new President of the Society of Master Saddlers. Well known throughout the industry after many years as head of Vale Brothers, Peter has a wealth of knowledge to bring to his new role. Passionate about excellence in saddlery craftsmanship, saddle fitting and the development and progress of the industry as a whole, Peter’s forward thinking approach should see an exciting 12 months for the society. Peter will work closely with the Chief Executive Hazel Morley and the Executive Committee, along with the sub committees over the coming year and was appointed to this new position at the Society of Master Saddlers’ AGM held at The King’s Troop RHA in London. Peter takes over from Helen Dart, with Laura Dempsey moving into the Vice President role. Said Peter: “I am very much looking forward to working alongside Hazel and the committee, continuing the great work carried out by Helen and hope it will be a very exciting and eventful year. I believe there are many good parts to the society and want to get the views of people who feel they don’t often have a say in matters. It is important to get a wider opinion on issues within and also outside the

Incoming President Peter Wilkes being congratulated by outgoing President Helen Dart (right) and new Vice President Laura Dempsey organisation and this is something I aim to achieve. “We see change in the market happening at a pace and these new developments should be embraced. It is important that we never let go of our traditional craftsmanship while also adopting and looking into new manufacturing processes. We need to constantly encourage and train more Qualified Saddle Fitters as I believe without such a role our industry would be in

a much poorer state. The trend for horse owners to believe in and understand saddle fitting is benefitting everyone. The more Qualified Saddle Fitters and Master Saddlers can work together the more everyone will benefit and enhance the value of the home industry. “I am starting my term feeling confident that consumers are buying again and it looks set to be a very positive time for all involved.”

alinnova Ltd/EquiFeast has had complaints upheld against an advert run in a consumer magazine that makes claims for the calming effect of chelated calcium. The ASA investigated whether claims made by Calinnova that “Getting both chelated calcium and controlled magnesium right, improves behaviour in up to 90% of difficult horses”; and “it can improve horse behaviour” could be substantiated and ruled that there was not enough evidence

Equestrian Business | October 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk

to support these claims and that the advert was making medicinal claims for an unlicensed product. Malcolm Green, research and technology director at EquiFeast (Calinnova Ltd) disagrees with the way the ASA have dealt with his case and says: “In its lengthy Mission and Value Statements the ASA claims to be good for business, evidence based and transparent. It is EquiFeast’s view that the way they have handled this case shows none of these high ideals. Instead

EquiFeast feels bruised and bullied by an organisation that seems able to rewrite its own rules at a whim and will do almost everything to get a conviction.” The ASA has upheld the claims against the advert and the ruling states: “The ad must not appear again in its current form. We told Calinnova Ltd to ensure that in future they held robust documentary evidence for their efficacy claims and that future ads did not contain medicinal claims for unlicensed products.”

mbitious plans for expansion into the Far East have led Cannock-based Black Country Saddles to approach the ChinaBritain Business Council for assistance tackling this complex market. The export strategy is being carefully worked on and has led to BBC Midlands Today visiting the new premises, interviewing managing director Mark Bryan and filming saddles in the various stages of the manufacturing process. BBC Business Correspondent Peter Plisner and the camera crew were on hand to film and interview both Mark and members of the team who enjoyed the time in the spotlight. Said Mark: “BBC Midlands wanted to put together a news piece about a specific and specialist business in the region looking to promote their products and services to China. “We were delighted when they contacted us about coming here to film our work and talk about our plans. “Being a worldwide business we realise the Chinese market is a sector we need to develop so

we contacted the China-Britain Business Council who seem helpful and supportive. “We are working closely with Chinese Business Advisor Mark Eaton and our relationshipbuilding has included attending a regional Chinese Forum which proved to be an interesting insight into the opportunities and market place. Some facts were re-

confirmed, some were new – all helpful – a very good Forum! “Filming with the BBC Midlands team was an exciting morning and although it proved to be quite nerve-wracking in front of the camera for everyone it was also a great opportunity to showcase the skills of our saddlery team and the growth of the business as a whole.”

Swag Seasonal

Memories of a long, hot summer are fading yet it still seems that the festive season is a long way off – but canny retailers are preparing now for the run up to Christmas to offer the best of the new products and top sellers.

F

or those that work in retail it almost seems like Christmas lasts all year round. It is at the centre of much of the stock planning, opening times discussions, holiday and staffing considerations, and sales plans. Retailers and buyers should be planning stock now and to coincide with this many of the winter clothing collections and new products are launched around about now. Look out for new trade catalogues and keep an eye on products launched in the consumer press to make sure you get the latest lines to stock – after all if a customer has seen their dream gift in a consumer

8

magazine and hubby sets out to purchase it, you need to make sure it is easy to find in your shop! Clearly you can’t stock everything and you can’t replace all your normal stock with shiny baubles of jewellery and other gift items – instead strive for a mix of new and unusual items alongside your usual best sellers. Remember that despite the rise in blingy Christmas products available, customers will still want feed, bedding and warm practical clothing. Alongside these items try a window display of Christmas gifts or most wanted items. Make it eye catching, beautiful and above all classy. With pester power still very much in action, a well-placed display of special children’s presents such as clothing, accessories, and toys can also prove popular for those looking to buy for a pony mad child. Remember that affiliate marketing and slick websites make the online world a very attractive place for buying gifts, particularly for those short on time but with money to spend. To ensure the customers make the trip to your store provide something that websites can’t – perhaps a Christmas event that involves a Santa’s grotto, or a special visit by a top rider to sign their latest book or merchandise. This ‘Off the Shelf’ guide showcases a huge range of products to suit all budgets, with special Christmas items that make festive displays simple, to classic country chic items that will turn the head of every discerning customer. Choose wisely, and choose now, to make the most of this time of year.

Winter Feeding

Modern Trends Examined As stock changes to match the season we look at the latest feeding trends observed by the manufacturers, discuss prohibited substances and provide stocking tips to rejuvenate winter feed sales.

I

f you’re still stacking the same sacks of feed in the same places as usual, it might be time to take a step back and look at whether this provides the best showcase for winter feed. Derek Mackey, head of sales at Dodson and Horrell explains: “Every shop is different, and while it can be a bit of an upheaval to reposition bulky products, it’s well worth making sure that the seasonal best sellers are highly visible and easy to access. Front of store displays can be used to point to the products retailers know their customers need most in each season.” Now might be the moment to get in touch with your suppliers and the company nutritionists to organise a nutrition day or winter feeding event, to encourage sales. Cam Price, managing director at Keyflow Feeds says: “If sufficiently confident and informed, then this is a great time to encourage people to ask advice with a well placed sign or attentive staff. It’s also prime time to host a feed event with one or more of your suppliers in attendance to answer customer questions.” Questions about feeding are commonplace for retailers but now there is competition from other sources of information. Retailers and nutritional helplines used to be the main places for people to go to for nutritional information, but now internet forums and websites are packed to the brim with a wide

18

variety of information and opinions. Liz Reid, marketing manager at Saracens elaborates: “The plethora of tools available online has hugely shaped the way we find, read, discuss and share knowledge about our horses. If you have a laptop, mobile or tablet device you can join the conversation. Consumer

retailer cannot be stressed enough as many horse owners will ask for their advice and recommendations. Knowledgeable, well-trained staff will be an asset to any retailer and make the customer experience a positive one. Many feed companies will gladly provide training for retailers and their staff.” So don’t

Online forums that have little in the way of moderation are popular but come with risks” understanding and thirst for knowledge is definitely present, but concern lies in where they are going for their answers. Online forums that have little in the way of moderation are popular but come with risks as it would seem everyone online is an ‘expert’. “I believe professionals (nutritionists, manufacturers and retailers) must work together and support the channels for consumer education and sourcing good quality information. Retailers must commit to training their staff and take advantage of the manufacturers that will come to their stores and carry out training.” Rachel Hornby at HorseHage agrees and says that the bombardment of information from all sources, with little thought to research and qualification, leaves customers “confused and frustrated.” She says: “The importance of the

be tempted to just point people to websites when faced with a query, instead take the opportunity to engage them in discussion and recommend products for their unique situation.

winter feeding trends The expert nutritionists all highlight a variety of different trends for feeding this season, but they are all more than just following fashion, they represent consumer demand at the current time and show that the message of fibre first and healthy digestion is getting through. Cam Price says that these days it’s all about digestibility, increasing nutrient absorption and getting the gut working efficiently: “This can be achieved with probiotics and also by feeding products containing stabilised rice bran, which is high

in oil and easily metabolised into low GI, slow-release calories. Manufacturing using wet steam extrusion also significantly increases digestibility. This unique cooking process increases the surface area of grain starch molecules, increasing feed digestibility in the small intestine to over 90%. Greater digestibility also means that nutritional requirements can be met with lower feeding rates resulting in reduced feeding costs.” Derek Mackey from Dodson and Horrell says: “Over the past few years, horse owners have become increasingly aware of the importance of providing plenty of dietary fibre, particularly during winter months when access to grazing may be reduced. More owners are providing ad lib hay or haylage in the field, in addition to using fibre-rich soaked sugar beet pulp and alfalfa as a base for winter feeds.” It is this variety in the sources of fibre which can be key to maintaining condition in some horses, particularly for those that are fussy eaters. Liz Reid, marketing manager at Saracens says: “Horses are natural grazers and when stabled, they can ‘switch off’ from just one type of forage. By providing a cafeteria selection of forage sources, consumers stimulate the horse’s appetite and mimic their more natural grazing behaviour. Retailers should always have a good selection of high fibre cubes on

their shelves so that they can direct customers to these products if and when presented with the scenario of a horse shying away from their forage.” Many horses maintain a busy winter exercise schedule and there is no longer such a clear cut line between summer and winter when it comes to energy needs. As such, high fat supplements and non-heating conditioning feeds are still in demand, and in fact the extra strain of keeping warm in cold weather can increase the horse’s need for energy in order to prevent a drop in condition. Dr Tom Shurlock from British Horse Feeds says: “There has been an increase in awareness of the physiology of the horse during the seasons. Previously winter was when your horse was exercised less, so he was put in a stable and taken off hard feed and put onto a low energy ‘filler’. However, as we learn more about his need to maintain heat generation (up to 80% of his energy intake may be needed just to keep warm and that is in a stable) and how fermentation of fibre generates heat, this by-product of digestion can be used to supply ‘central heating’ as well as nutrition. “Using a beet based product actually improves the rate of fermentation of fibre in the large intestine (and to some extent in the small intestine) and so generates more heat per unit

20

fed. As winter is a time of reduced intake anyway, emphasis on better utilisation of fibre has been the focus of many nutritionists. That is not to say that hard feed is not needed but optimising fibre, and

There have been two fairly recent high profile cases that have hit the headlines relating to prohibited substances in feed, with New Zealand eventer Jock Paget clearing his name after last year’s allegations, and the Queen’s racehorse Estimate testing positive for morphine in the summer. Both cases highlight the importance of the supply chain and the limits to the extent that any feed company can guarantee its products are free from banned substances, particularly those that are naturally occurring anyway. The UK feed industry has very robust controls and testing in place and there are very few cases that slip through. Will I’Anson from British Horse Feeds says: “We are privileged to be part of an equine feed industry recognised throughout the world to have very high standards consisting of very credible manufacturers.” Lizzie Drury MSc RNutr from Saracens says: “We are proud of our quality control procedures at Saracen Horse Feeds and we strive to make it our business to ensure that any feed that we produce is safe to be fed to horses that are racing or competing under Jockey Club or FEI rules. “However, the reality of the situation is that contamination could happen to anyone and due to the nature, transport and handling of raw materials no one can give an absolute guarantee that their products may not be contaminated

“No one can give an absolute guarantee that their products may not be contaminated with a prohibited substance” fibre fermentation (and so fibre digestibility), especially in winter, is the way to go!” There is no longer a ‘typically British’ winter either, which can further complicated winter feeding plans – an Indian summer can extend the grazing season considerably and retailers may find that all demand for winter products begins much later this year. Rachel Hornby at HorseHage warns that laminitis is still a risk at this time of year and through the winter and says: “Last winter saw an increase in the number of enquiries we received regarding laminitis possibly related to such mild temperatures. Horse owners trying to manage horses and ponies with, or prone to laminitis, are increasingly aware of the sugar levels that their usual forage may contain.” Offering low sugar forage, small-holed haynets and hay steamers or soakers could still be important.

with a prohibited substance as many of these occur naturally in the environment. At Saracen Horse Feeds we are rigorous in our supplier and haulier checks and have our own testing protocol that we follow religiously. The most we can do is to continue with these practices and continually review what we do as new information becomes available. “Nobody in the feed industry would knowingly want to put any of their riders in the position of having a positive prohibited substance test and thanks to the work of BETA and the feed industry’s interest in all working together on this, then this can only bring positive and constructive answers as to how in the future we can help to support and protect our industry.”

top tips The minute detail of each horse’s ideal diet requires careful discussion

with each customer, but there are some important generalisations that can apply to all, or almost all, horses that are worth reiterating. Liz Reid from Saracens says that one of the key questions to ask someone who is trying to help their horse gain condition is: “Is your horse eating enough long stem forage? If yes, then and only then look to a conditioning feed to increase the horse’s calorie intake. If not, and the horse is able to be given more forage, this is a preferred method to increase calorie intake.” Cam Price from Keyflow Feeds also provides some good advice to suit all: “Monitor condition on a daily basis and use a weigh tape if you don’t feel sufficiently experienced to judge any subtle changes in condition. Such knowledge will enable you to make minor adjustments to the horse’s diet if necessary rather than making drastic changes after condition is either lost or gained.” He also thinks it is important to keep it simple. “If your horse is on a good quality balanced ration at the recommended daily intake then he should be receiving all the nutrients he needs, making additional vitamin and mineral supplementation unnecessary. If he is on less than the recommended intake and/or he is not thriving then first seek advice from your feed manufacturer who may be able to suggest a minor adjustment to the diet that will resolve the issue.” Dr Tom Shurlock from British Horse Feeds also provides a top tip that may seem obvious but is easily overlooked in winter: “Remember water! Chances are that your horse will not drink as much water as he would take in as grass, or would drink in the summer. By providing mashes, especially warm mashes, you can easily get water into your horse, and keep him warm at the same time. Suitable feedstuffs are products based on beet or soya hulls or low starch brans.”

Stable & Yard Essentials

TOOLS of the trade

From forks to buckets & everything in between, Equestrian Business looks at the yard equipment sector to see how it’s developing.

J

ust as the number of types of bedding increases, so too do the number of tools required to muck out so this is a steadily expanding market. Specific forks for shavings, wood pellets, and rubber matting feature different designs to help users muck out more easily. Alongside this, there is an increasing awareness of stable hygiene, so products to help customers do a deep clean and keep bacteria at bay are also growing in popularity. Think of items like disinfectant powder, pressure washers and so on, which are simple ways to keep stables clean and fresh. Vale Brothers’ KBF99 Shavings Fork features a unique additive that kills 99% of bacteria, including strangles, ringworm and e.coli. This is part of a range of products including salt lick holders and scoops that are chemical free but include this special KBF99 additive, so are Stubbs yard maintenance from Abbey England

perfect for people keen to tackle bacteria in the stable. Apart from an increasing popularity for stable hygiene products, there has also been a shift towards making traditional stable tools more user friendly. Rebecca Ball at eazitools says: “Often people find that mucking out aggravates their lower back. Choosing tools that are lightweight and the correct height are key considerations when choosing a new stable tool.” With this in mind, try stocking tools to suit different heights and if possible advise customers on the right tools to suit them, rather than just the first one they see.

VALUE FOR MONEY Although the recession has curbed spending in some areas, manufacturers in this sector have noticed that customers are all searching for ‘value for money’

Vale Brothers’ KBF99 tools help fight bacteria and are indestructible

“Customers want to know their cash is getting them best value long term” items, rather than just cheap items. Steve Faulks from Faulks & Cox Ltd says: “No matter how short of money horsey folk are, they will always find that little bit extra to care for their pride and joy! Rather than cheapening our product offer, we have deliberately applied a ‘flight to quality’ policy because customers want to know their cash is getting them best value long term.” Rebecca Ball says that the customer’s requirement for value for money is “one of the key reasons why we moved manufacture back to the UK in 2012. All our tools come with a lifetime guarantee which shows how much we trust the quality of our products.”

display tips Stable tools and equipment can seem a bit of a minefield sector, especially when the products can take up quite a large amount of space on the shop floor. With so many different brands and ranges available, how can you

24

Equestrian Business | October 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk

choose stock that will sell and satisfy customer demand? “We don’t offer a huge range of tools but instead we have a small range that we know sells,” says Rebecca. “Retailers don’t want stock that doesn’t sell. We’ve recently updated our packaging to be more informative which will help the customer make the decision to buy one of our products in store.” Display is of course key – as with any product – and Steve says: “The best tools always look even better when displayed properly. Displays take up less room; show a full range in one tidy place and with good display boards will smarten up any store. Good retailers will buy from companies that supply point of sale back-up with all their products.” Rebecca provides more display advice: “Often tools are put to the back of the shop as they can be difficult to display but our bestselling retailers incorporate them into their window or front of store displays from October to February when most stabled horses are back in at night.”

What to stock for Successful Sales

W

inter jackets for this season follow the same lines as the previous year, with versatile pockets, fur lined hoods and cuffs and drawstring waists still featuring heavily. Men’s jackets are still firmly in the traditional camp, with wax jackets still popular, whilst women’s jackets are quilted and in a variety of muted colours. However, new this year is an emphasis on bright electric blue which will really stand out on the shelves, although may not be for every customer. As with all areas of rider attire, sizing is vital and targeting the market is of course crucial. Understanding the changing shape of riders and the need for more technical clothing in larger sizes is really key and some companies have worked hard to create riding

clothing that fits and – importantly – flatters all sizes. Toggi has thought about how to make sure its products fit every rider, whichever size, which is no mean feat. For instance, a jacket designed to fit a size 8-10 can of course be sized up to an 18 but it does not mean that the style will suit both people. With the Toggi Salcombe jacket, the design is a shape that is not too nipped in and fitted, so it fits particularly well in the larger sizes. Flexible touches like drawstring waists or belts allow the wearer to choose the fit of the jacket. If possible invest in a larger sized dummy to showcase the products that fit a wider size range – larger sizes look less than spectacular on the hanger but can look absolutely stunning when fitted on a correctly proportioned model.

Trade show report

A high level of international visitors helped make spoga a success

The event was an excellent showcase for leading products

An international feel at spoga horse autumn A

n excellent level of trade visitors and a high degree of internationality ensured an extremely satisfied mood among the exhibitors at the spoga horse autumn. 418 exhibitors from 33 countries presented innovations and trends from all segments of the equestrian sport industry. “The comprehensive market overview across all product groups concentrating fully on the equestrian sport industry is unique on the international trade fair scene. The focus on business pays off for the exhibitors and trade visitors to an equal extent,” commented Katharina C. Hamma, chief operating officer of Koelnmesse GmbH. “The level of internationality at spoga horse has constantly risen year after year to attain a very high level, in

2014 once again 78 percent of the exhibitors and 58 percent of the visitors were from abroad, which means we were able to confirm our pioneering role as the leading international equestrian sport trade fair.”

Decision makers

A constant flow of visitors as well as excellent discussions at the well-attended stands made for an extremely positive mood among the exhibitors. The most important decision-makers from the companies were represented among the trade visitors: According to an independent visitor survey, 54 percent of the trade visitors play a crucial role in the procurement decisions within their company and 25 percent are involved in the decision-making

process. In turn, the trade visitors also let themselves be convinced by the quality and the innovations of the exhibitors. 92 percent gave a positive feedback regarding the range of exhibits at spoga horse autumn. Furthermore, around 95 percent of the people interviewed were satisfied or even very satisfied as far as achieving the goals of their visit were concerned.

Creative and competitive The focus was placed on the innovative power of the industry once again this year through the spoga horse Innovation Award, which was conferred by Koelnmesse and the trade magazine, equitrends, for the 14th time. At the award ceremony on September 2, HKM Sports

Innovation was well rewarded

Equipment was delighted with its first place for the obstacle sticker Skala and Carr & Day & Martin was equally overjoyed with second place in the ‘Horse & Stable’ category for Equimist 360 (an anti-fly spray). The victory in the category ‘Riders’ went to Euro-star Riding Fashion for the ESK Protection Jodhpurs, followed by Derriere Equestrian for the Equestrian Padded Support System (equestrian underwear). Horseshape / Hölscher was also distinguished in the ‘Saddle & Accessories’ category for its 3D scan saddle pad. Sommer claimed second place with the thermal seat. The next spoga horse spring is scheduled to take place in Cologne from February 8–10 2015. Further information is available at www. spogahorse.com.

KEN LYNDON-DYKES

Are alternative therapies effective? Ken Lyndon-Dykes considers how to best evaluate alternative therapies when treating horses. Readers of a certain age will remember the little black box. What became known as radionics was developed by Dr Albert Abrahams and it enabled him to diagnose a very wide range of diseases using a variable resistor box involving complicated processes. Despite amazingly accurate results, many in the medical profession remained very sceptical. Inevitably all sorts of diagnostic techniques were said to have been developed in relation to ‘the little back box’, some of which apparently produced positive results, others that were obviously money-making scams. One that created a lot of interest – and which was reported to result in very variable degrees of success – had, for a time, a big following in the horse world. A few hairs from the tail of the horse for

which a diagnosis was required were sent by post to the little black box practitioner. In some cases the analysis provided was accompanied by treatment details. (By then any number of so-called experts who had set up in business were in no way associated with Dr Abrahams.) The chances are that most readers are scoffing – ‘what a load of rubbish’. But, make no mistake, there were some powerful advocates within the horse world who would brook no criticism. As time progressed, more ‘practitioners’ jumped on the bandwagon and there is little doubt some fraudulent claims were made. This leads me to a question – one to which I don’t have an answer. Various alternative therapies are available for horses – are they effective? Let me be clear, I am in no way suggesting the

I would like to be able to make a reasoned judgment and not base my thinking on gut feeling and subjectivity

services practitioners provide don’t produce the wanted results – in fact, I am sure some are excellent. What I find difficult is how horse owners differentiate between the vast ranges now on offer. Does legislation exist to protect the client? Must all therapy practitioners hold relevant qualifications? Are all the qualifications quantifiable and monitored? Physiotherapy for human treatment has been around for a long time and most people will have benefited or know someone who has experienced positive results. Two initial points: physiotherapy is complementary, not alternative. Further: physiotherapy has been used to treat horses for a long time and some excellent results have been produced. Members of ACPAT – the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy – must be a chartered ‘physio’ before training to practice with horses and other animals. Importantly: prior to treating a horse, the physio must have permission from the vet (a legal requirement). Farther: he/she may not carry out homeopathy, acupuncture and other such ‘invasive’ treatments. Information about equine physiotherapy, the qualifications and the legislation is documented and clear and everyone knows where they stand. But what about acupuncture? Reiki? Homeopathy? Herbs? Chiropractic? Bach flowers? Bowen technique? And these are just for starters! I am not an automatic sceptic. I would like to be able to make a reasoned judgment and not base my thinking on gut feeling and subjectivity. I do think it is very difficult – if not impossible – to be totally objective. I suggest that it would be incredibly complicated to judge all alternative therapies following identical criteria. The breadth of knowledge required would be comprehensive and, presumably, even setting up absolutely identical situations

is an ex-international level three-day-event rider. A Qualified Society of Master Saddlers’ saddle fitter and a member of the society’s executive committee, he owns and runs SaddleWorld, one of the largest saddle retailers in the UK. Ken is increasingly in demand as a professional witness and adjudicator in reation to saddlery-related claims and disputes. He is also well-known as an inspirational and interesting lecturer/speaker.

would be difficult. (Of course, I speak not as any type of therapist but as a rather bewildered exowner of competition horses!) Fortunes have been built on treating ‘bad backs’ in horses. In quite a few cases I have had first-hand involvement having been called in as the ‘expert’ in connection with saddle fitting. What worried me most was that in most cases the horse concerned was being treated for the ‘problem’ without firstly diagnosing the problem in medical terms, secondly identifying the cause of the problem and thirdly agreeing the prognosis. All too often a saddle was deemed to have caused the ‘sore back’. In the majority of cases the problems were associated with a saddle but not caused by a saddle. A couple of examples: a horse exhibited pressure points under the back of the saddle. The saddle fitted well, but the rider, heavy and unbalanced, crashed behind the horse’s movement every stride! Any amount of ‘treatment’ given to the horse would not eliminate the problem! On another occasion the horse concerned was sore at the base of her withers. I was a bit flummoxed because the saddle fitted adequately; discussing this with the owner, he mentioned that he ‘sometimes borrowed a friend’s saddle…to cut down on saddle cleaning’! All is – often – not as it seems. Rephrasing my original question: how to evaluate the growing numbers of alternative therapies available for the treatment of horses? Or is this attitude too logical?

Hidden within the gut wall, encysted small redworm (ESRW) larvae can account for up to 90% of the redworm burden in a horse.1 If allowed to go untreated during late autumn and winter, this burden can lead to the serious and potentially fatal disease known as larval cyathostominosis.1 Treating with a wormer that does not specifically target ESRW can increase the risk of larval cyathostominosis. 2 Act now to combat the threat. Prescribe EQUEST or EQUEST PRAMOX to provide effective single dose control of ESRW. 3,4 Get further inside information on ESRW from your Zoetis Account Manager and advise your horse owners to act now.
