heart as he has recently overcome bladder cancer so he wanted to give something back to the charity that supported him. The event took place on October 25 at the New Deer Showground in Aberdeen and was attended by Scottish politician Alex Salmond and thousands of local people who enjoyed an evening of food and refreshments, music, a tombola and a bouncy castle before the dazzling category 4 display by Fireworx Scotland. John said: “Together with my wife, friends and employees of 4 Horse who helped put this show together, we are overwhelmed by the support shown for the event. We calculate there were nearly 3,000 people having a great time and the fireworks and supporting acts were out of this world. As an inaugural event we anticipate even more fun and support for the 2015
display. So far we have collected around £3,500 for the charity, with donations still coming in.” Although fireworks and animals don’t mix, this licensed event was held on a recognised event showground and not near any horses. John jokes with his tongue firmly in his cheek: “The two immediate local residents (one horse, one dog) were moved to relatives for the evening, even though both expressed an interest in coming to the event. The horses that did attend the display were only allowed to hold sparklers…” Donations can still be made via www.justgiving.com/ fireworksagainstcancer or directly to UCAN. A bottle of parliamentary whisky, signed by Alex Salmond on his last day in office, will shortly be made available for auction. Details at www.fireworksagainstcancer.org.

omino Phillips, of Carrs Billington in Cumbria, was crowned the winner of the Virbac 3D Worming Equine SQP of the Year. The title and award was presented to Domino by Katie Jerram at a prestigious champagne reception at this year’s Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), held at the NEC Birmingham in October. Domino has been working for Carrs for the last 18 months and during that time has thrown herself into her work as an SQP,
finding the theory behind faecal egg counts and giving customers good advice the most rewarding part of her job. Domino herself has an ex racehorse that she hopes to compete, so knows all too well the importance of correct worming for top condition and good general health; knowledge that she regularly passes on to her customers. “I am extremely proud to be part of this competition and to win is just a complete surprise, I am chuffed,” said Domino.

oetis is bringing the risks of encysted small redworm to life using Blippar ‘augumented reality’. The company has used the new technology for its latest Trojan Horse advertising campaign to help drive home important messages about managing encysted small redworm this winter. Every Zoetis Trojan horse advertisement can be transformed into an educational video using the Blippar app on a smart device. The advertisement highlights the hidden dangers of encysted small redworm with a play on the Trojan horse tale, which involved
Greek soldiers entering the city of Troy by stealth, hidden within the mythological wooden Trojan horse. Encysted small redworm are also capable of concealing themselves inside a horse. Untreated, they may develop and emerge en masse from the gut wall in the early spring, causing diarrhoea and colic with a mortality rate of up to 50%. Penny McCann, Zoetis equine brand manager explains: “We hope that by bringing our campaign to life with Blippar we can capture the attention of horse owners and help them to understand the risks of encysted small redworm over the winter months.”

Feeding Veterans
The ageing
Population
Photo courtesy of Allen & Page
As horses get older their nutritional requirements change and manufacturers have recognised this, producing an ever-growing range of feeds and supplements targeted to veterans. Here, trade and nutrition experts discuss the changing needs of the older horse and advise on the best way to promote veteran products in store.
H
orses are technically classified as veterans over the age of 15, but in reality each horse ages at a different rate and should be assessed as an individual. “Ageing is a gradual process, but generally it is in middle-age and beyond that genetic programming signals when to stop growing, hormone levels begin to decline, metabolism slows and digestive processes become less efficient,” says Cam Price, managing director of Keyflow Feeds. In practice many horses
8
are not considered veterans until well into their twenties and Dengie nutritionist Tracey Hammond explains that there is a need to differentiate between individual cases: “There is a difference between the veteran horse that is still active and healthy, where a balanced diet suitable for its workload and body condition is still appropriate – as with any other horse – and the veteran horse that has age-associated issues such as poor dentition or pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID
Equestrian Business | December 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
or Cushing’s disease) where a specialised diet is required.” A customer that comes in requesting a veteran feed may therefore need steering in a different direction, but if a customer mentions conditions associated with age then perhaps its time to point them towards an age-appropriate diet, that also suits the horse’s condition and workload. Lizzie Drury MSc RNutr, senior nutritionist at Saracen Horse Feeds says: “Retailers should look out for changes in normal feed buying patterns
and leading questions such as customers asking for feeds that can be soaked into a mash or advice on conditioning feeds, especially if these customers have usually been buying normal maintenance feeds or working rations. Questions like these could be early indicators of changes to their horse’s normal coping mechanisms to changes of routine and seasons.” Tracey adds: “Some of the signs of ageing that owners should look out for include the horse’s joints being stiffer than usual, loss of muscle

Feeding Veterans mass and weight, and quidding, where partially chewed feed is dropped from the mouth, which can indicate dental issues. There are also many signs associated with the onset of PPID, such as a longer coat and failing to shed the coat in the spring, drinking and urinating more, and recurring laminitis, which is prevalent in the autumn,” says Tracey. When it comes to horses with PPID, also known as Cushing’s Disease, retailers must tread carefully when recommending a feed as Tracey explains: “Their needs are similar to horses and ponies with laminitis, and low sugar and starch feeds should be recommended, which might make some veteran feeds inappropriate.”
dental health One of the most likely reasons for an older horse struggling to maintain condition is deterioration in dental health. Chloe Bristow, Dodson & Horrell company vet says: “Many older horses suffer from dental disease or reduced dental efficiency. As the teeth erupt from the jaw they become worn down, and eventually by the late twenties may start to fall out. This can lead to a reduced ability to chew long fibre and an increased risk of choke or colic. Where dental disease is present or suspected, it is best to feed a soft, short, crumby cube that can ideally be made into a mash. This may help to reduce the amount of feed that becomes lodged in diastemata (gaps between the teeth) and will alleviate the risk of choke. A softer cube will also require less chewing,
Forage replacements are big business for veterans and there is a huge range available and so will be more easily digested. Efficient chewing is essential to health, as not only does it reduce the risk of digestive disturbances, but also maximises the amount of nutrients that can be absorbed from the food.” When horses are struggling to chew forage, it is essential that fibre is maintained in other ways. Forage replacements are big business for veterans and there is a huge range available. “The choice and availability of alternative fibre
10
sources, commonly known as hay replacers, has grown significantly over the last few years,” says Joanna Palmer, equine nutritionist at Allen & Page. “The choice includes short-chopped chaffs, sugar beet, grass nuts, alfalfa pellets and specially prepared, fast soaking fibre feeds that combine all the necessary ingredients and vitamins and minerals to provide a balanced diet. A hay replacer should provide similar nutrition to that of good quality hay but in a form that is much easier to eat. For this reason a fast soaking fibre feed is popular with horses and their owners alike as it provides a convenient, easy to prepare diet that is suitable for any veteran, regardless of the number of teeth they may have!” High fibre diets are essential for all horses and even more so for veterans in order to maintain condition, but Jane Buchan from Baileys Horse Feeds emphasises that digestive health is important too and that when owners are considering a veteran feed, those containing digestive enhancers are a good idea: “Yeasts stimulate fibre-digesting bacteria and pro/prebiotics support other beneficial bacteria to ensure that the gut is as healthy as possible. These may become compromised if fibre intake is becoming a problem so supporting them as much as possible will help minimise any detrimental effects meaning that the bacteria can digest the fibre portion more efficiently and appetite will be maintained as bacteria are responsible for B vitamin production, which can cause a lack of appetite if low.” The use of digestive enhancers such as yeasts are not necessarily because the horse’s digestive system declines with age, in fact Chloe Bristow says: “It is a common myth that horse’s digestive systems become less efficient with age. What actually happens is that conditions and problems that adversely affect digestion become more common, while requirements for certain nutrients may increase due to illness or a change in lifestyle.” However, horse owners can easily choose to support healthy digestion by choosing a feed that contains a full range of vitamins and minerals as well as pre and probiotics or yeast. Remember that not all customers will want to give a bucket feed, so supplements that can be given as a treat or by syringe, or a veteran balancer, may be popular for those horses that do not require a bucket feed.
Equestrian Business | December 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
appearance & display There are a variety of veteran feeds available from pellets, to mixes to chopped fibre feed, but Dr Tom Shurlock from British Horse Feeds says: “To look at a veteran feed you will probably see no difference. Pellets do not need to change as long as the horse can pick them up and all sizes from 2 mm to 6 mm are acceptable. Where there are changes are the ingredients. More highly digestible ingredients such as cooked cereals and quality proteins are included and there may be a greater range and inclusion of nutraceuticals, prebiotics, phytochemicals etc. These will all be designed to help bolster the functions within the gut.” Displaying some feeds loose out of the bags may be an excellent way to draw customers to discuss their veteran horse’s needs, for instance noting a smaller pellet size, or a soaked feed and explaining why this may be beneficial. Also, as levels of starch and sugar may be absolutely crucial for those horses with a medical condition, and as customers are becoming more and more savvy about feed ingredients, clear labelling on products is vital. If customers can
see exactly what is in the feed and are provided with useful point of sale literature, they are more likely to trust the product for their horse. Liz Reid, marketing manager at Saracen Horse Feeds says: “When customers are looking for veteran feeds, they are often very interested in the full declaration of what is in the feed, starch levels for example, so it is important to stock veteran feeds that display their full nutrient specification allowing customers to make informed decisions with regards to buying a suitable veteran feed.” Of course a canny retailer is also looking for opportunities to broaden sales and Liz provides some clear advice: “Creating a veteran display featuring targeted veteran products could help with cross/up-sell opportunities. Try keeping products such as pre and probiotics or joint supplements near to the veteran feeds and forage replacement alternatives for those with veterans with poor dentition.” Tracey Hammond agrees and adds some further products to consider: “Make your display a one-stop shop for owners of veteran horses, with items such as spring balances and larger feed buckets, which might be needed when feeding short chops as hay replacers.”

A combined approach Taking a broad approach to hoof care including both nutrition and hoof applications will help present stock clearly and make the most of this growing sector.
H
oof care is very much a growth sector, with broadening scientific research and understanding contributing to the development of more dietary and topical hoof products, as well as developments in hoof management, trims and farriery. Part of this growth and development is down to how the manufacturers of products such as supplements and hoof applications are linking up with other experts in the field, such as farriers. Amanda Flowers from Carr & Day & Martin explains: “We work very much with the scientific farriery community in an educational capacity. We have a very close relationship with the Farriery Department at Myerscough College and this has involved us attending and speaking at farriery events as well as getting involved in farrier run research projects. This approach means that farriers can educate and advise horse owners about the correct and most beneficial ways to use our products, resulting in owners requesting them from retailers.” Nettex is also very proactive working with many farriers within the industry to promote the range of hoofcare products
14
and equestrian business manager Serena Kidd says: “Many farriers have approached us at shows and at the office to say they have used the products and provide feedback on how effective they are. We have a number of farriers who have accounts with us not only promoting the topical products but also the supplements when they are visiting their clients and this is especially helpful to us as a brand as horse owners have confidence in what their farrier recommends and it leads to repeat sales in store.”
building blocks Just as using the correct materials when laying the foundations for a house is crucial, so too is providing the essential building blocks of hoof horn when feeding for hoof health. Chloe Bristow, Dodson & Horrell company vet explains: “Hoof horn is a complex, constantly growing structure that responds to the stresses placed upon it by exercise, the weather, and also the surfaces it comes into contact with. Many people fall into the trap of focusing solely on biotin. Although biotin is an
Equestrian Business | December 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
essential factor in promoting healthy hooves (studies have found that we need to feed at least 15 mg per day to have the best effect), many other ingredients are just as essential to hoof growth and quality.” Customers may be searching for a feed that provides hoof boosting nutrients as an in built factor, a balancer to promote hoof health or a supplement to add to the daily rations and all of these are available, proving that feeding to promote healthy hooves is high on the agenda for manufacturers. Biotin is obviously a key nutrient to be found in all of these hoof boosting feeds and supplements, but Serena Kidd provides an outline of other key nutrients that can contribute to hoof health: “It is important to remember that biotin alone will not promote healthy hoof growth. Ideally it will be blended with vitamins, minerals and trace elements to support the diet but also other compounds that work in conjunction with each other to promote healthy hoof growth. Zinc and manganese are two important minerals that are important to support the formation of Keratin

Feet First to using a supplement, they need to feed it for at least six months, or else they’re just wasting their money!” Value for money is key for all customers so when a long term commitment to a product is required and the cost seems quite high it can be off putting to customers. Retailers should be armed with information on the value for money that product offers, not just its face value cost. David continues: “We get a lot of customers asking us about the cost per day versus the cost per tub. People want a product that does what it says it will, but they also want value for money. The only fair way to compare the latter is to work out the cost per day. People are genuinely amazed at the results this generates…’expensive’ supplements can become affordable when they realise how long the tub or bottle will last.”

It is important to remember that biotin alone will not promote healthy hoof growth” Absorbine says: “The key to effective hoof applications is in the ingredients, as this is what will maintain hoof health. However, it is worth looking at packaging and delivery methods, such as the convenient brush in cap hoof dressing containers, that facilitate easy application and reduce contamination of the product by bedding or other material.” For many products it comes down to the customer’s personal preference and their horse’s specific needs – for instance are they trying to seal the hoofs to keep them from getting too wet in winter conditions? Or are they trying to prevent hooves drying out in summer conditions. Also, customers may want a high shine or black coloured product for show ring turnout, or perhaps they prefer a no-drip hoof moist over a potentially messy hoof oil. Displaying a hoof supplement with a topical treatment and feeds that promote hoof health are a good idea but also add products to the display that may support other hoof problems that are encountered e.g. poultice and poultice boots, hoof picks etc are often in demand during winter months.”

item not as described!
KEN LYNDON-DYKES
Ken has to channel his tactful side when dealing with customers, but also emphasises the difficulty that incorrect customer information can bring to the saddle fitting business.
I
sometimes think that training in saddle fitting should embrace some additional skills – psychology and PR! I cannot be the only saddle fitter who has to deal with ‘difficult’ situations where such expertise would be useful. Only a few days ago I had a telephone enquiry from the mother of ‘a petite 15-yearold’. I went through the normal procedure, asked all the pertinent questions and appeared to receive the right answers. I accordingly selected saddles likely to be suitable and drove to the stables where I was to meet the young woman and her mother. The young woman was petite – in the sense she was just over five feet – but she weighed at least 11 stone – probably more! The saddles I had selected were totally inadequate to accommodate the young lady’s substantial physique – but can you imagine explaining the problem? In my experience, fifteen-year-old girls are quite difficult at the best of times, partly because they are often sensitive and frequently insecure. I was very, very fortunate in this particular instance as I was also carrying several saddles I had selected for an adult client. Luckily the young woman’s horse, a very attractive 15.2hh crossbred, was up to her weight and one of the saddles I was carrying for the other client fitted well. Phew! In fact, the story ended on a high note: despite her size the young woman rode very pleasantly and she very obviously has good rapport with her horse. Yes, when dealing with enquiries I do ask the client to provide details of their weight. On this particular occasion, probably a protective instinct, the mother just repeated the ‘petite’ description. There was I visualising a dainty,
18
ballet-dancer type of young woman...! Joking apart, this sort of situation could have wasted half a day of my time and resulted in horrible embarrassment for the young woman. As it was, I sold a top-of-the-range saddle and I was also able to hand out genuine compliments about her riding ability. Misrepresentation doesn’t stop with this type of situation. Asked to describe his riding standard on a 1–10 scale, a male rider
dismounting, walk and trot (he proudly pointed out this included sitting and rising) and not very much more! This story also ended pretty well all things considered. The client’s riding school instructor had found a perfect horse for this inexperienced but keen rider – an unflappable and very wellmannered ten-year-old cob on which the client was going to have lessons three times a week! Just the sort of seemingly affluent new owner needed by the equestrian
I would like to be able to make a reasoned judgment and not base my thinking on gut feeling and subjectivity confidently quoted 8! In actual fact, at best it should have been a 2! The client was a first-time horse owner and I tactfully asked how he had assessed his experience. He told me his experience to-date involved lessons at his local riding school which provided clients with assessments indicating progress. Apparently level 8 – in terms of the riding school – involved mounting,

industry! Of course, it is possible to recount any number of similar stories relating to situations that could easily result in the saddle fitter wasting considerable amounts of time. The alternative would be to go along with the spurious information and fit a saddle corresponding to the details provided. Totally unethical, of

A Qualified Society of Master Saddlers’ saddle fitter and a member of the society’s executive committee, he owns and runs SaddleWorld, one of the largest saddle retailers in the UK. course! The horse and the rider would be the victims. And the saddle fitter would have lost all rights to being regarded as a professional and reputation would – very rightly in my opinion – suffer drastically. I am increasingly encouraging clients to provide photographs of their horse and themselves. The images don’t totally solve the problem of clients supplying inadequate/inaccurate information but they go some way towards a solution. Of course, the other way might be to charge a booking fee for saddle fittings – but this would require universal agreement and be difficult to administer anyway. However, on the plus side, I think a booking fee with clear information indicating the importance of accuracy would certainly encourage owners to take more care in regard to the information they provide. It would also indicate to novice owners the need to seek help and advice from someone more knowledgeable before giving the saddle fitter the relevant information. The equestrian industry is largely founded on goodwill. Almost inevitable, I guess, when it involves animals and what is, for the majority of riders, a leisure activity. Retailers are the people who mostly come in contact with the riding public and I am certain everyone has gone way beyond providing ‘normal’ service many, many, many times over. And of course, service that includes impeccable advice is an essential factor in our industry but, at the same time, we have to be aware that we are running businesses.

Winter Ailments
Respiratory
Issues
In part two of the winter ailments series, Dr Carol Michael, director of Phytorigins, explains about a new state of the art approach to the management of respiratory diseases in horses and a new study that will take place next year.
R
espiratory problems are very common in horses and the three big respiratory diseases are caused by viruses, bacterial infections and allergies. These three can affect the Upper (nose to trachea) or Lower (trachea to lungs) respiratory tract. Stabled horses are most at risk especially in areas with a large equine traffic, horses travelling to different events and horses moving into stables previously inhabited by other horses from a different area.
a predictable cycle Most respiratory disease starts with a virus which destroys parts of the respiratory tract, making the horse more prone to secondary attacks from bacteria that either reside in the respiratory tract itself or are inhaled from the environment. The worst of the airborne viruses is Equine Influenza which is 100% contagious in unvaccinated horses. In the past many shows and events were cancelled through outbreaks but now most big events have a compulsory vaccination programme. Equine Flu causes nasal discharge, high temperature, weight loss and depression, and recovery can take up to three weeks, in some severe cases permanent lung damage will occur. Other respiratory viruses are EHV1-5, Equine Viral Arteritis and Rhinovirus. Some viruses cause abortion or paralysis and all
20
will cause coughing, wheezing and a nasal discharge which is usually clear until a secondary bacterial infection changes the discharge colour to a yellow /green thick mucus. Most viruses are highly contagious and difficult to prevent, although vaccination significantly decreases the risk and also prevents large scale outbreaks, particularly as vaccines are periodically updated as the virus mutates. After a virus and secondary infection the respiratory tract will be prone to developing allergies/ hypersensitivity from mould spores present in the hay, stable or bedding, causing COPD, or ROA as it is sometimes known. This condition can be chronic, causing long term loss of use through persistent coughing and
breathing difficulties. Even limited exposure to allergens will cause inflammation of the airways which gets worse over time and COPD accounts for over half the horses affected by respiratory disease.
state of the art Airway and systemic inflammation of horses is a multifactorial problem and remains a diagnostic challenge. Therefore a new study has been proposed and is starting in January 2015. This study will advance the understanding of factors which influence susceptibility to respiratory disease in horses. Studying the interactions between nutritional intervention, exercise and the immune system helps to provide crucial information about the
mechanisms that are responsible for such responses. Moreover, a better physiological understanding of the metabolic changes in horses with training could identify novel targets for brand new treatments and interventions. The scientific merit of this proposal is reflected by the uncertainty in the clinically important area of infection risk in horses, balanced against the enormous potential of novel (and cheap) technologies to improve phenotypic characterisation of horses for better diagnosis, risk assessment and efficacious preventive intervention to optimise exercise training. For more information on this study please contact Dr. Carol Michael: carol@superfix.net
Respiratory management for retailers As explained above, respiratory issues in horses can be due to a huge range of physical and environmental factors. Customers should seek veterinary advice to ensure they can support their horse correctly and veterinary medicines may be required. However, the retailer can do a lot to support the horse with either mild respiratory problems or that is undergoing treatment for more serious conditions. Controlling the dust and spores in the horse’s
Equestrian Business | December 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
environment is important to prevent unnecessary irritation of the respiratory tract. Dust free bedding such as paper, pellets, hemp or dust extracted shavings are the best bedding types to recommend, and those with an antibacterial treatment may be a good option. Further stable disinfectants should also be recommended to provide an all round approach to cutting down dust in the stable. Alongside environmental management, controlling dust in feed is also helpful. You could
recommend that customers feed a soaked product, which could cut down the chance of any dust from pellet feeds, plus soaking or steaming hay, or feeding a dust-free bagged forage is also important. Encouraging horses to eat in a more natural ‘head-down’ position, eg from the floor, will help to promote better breathing so items such as floor level hay feeders could also be helpful. Finally, there are lots of supplements and licks that offer respiratory support.

A flourishing
PARTNERSHIP
It has now been two years since Charles Owen welcomed Airowear into the fold as part of the company that has become the world’s leader in equestrian safety products. The joining of the two companies has been an exciting time for the equestrian safety industry and the wheels of innovation have been working overtime at Charles Owen.
I
n 1911 a man by the name of Charles Owen started manufacturing helmets for the army in the east end of London. Twenty-seven years later, the winning jockey of the famous Grand National Steeplechase wore the newly launched Charles Owen Jockey Helmet featuring its patented head fitting system. Over 100 years later Charles’ grandson, Roy Burek, has continued the family tradition of innovating and manufacturing products for a safer world. Charles Owen celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2011 by creating the largest equestrian helmet factory in the UK. With many companies finding it increasingly difficult to manufacture in Great Britain, Charles Owen has bucked the trend and announced its exciting expansion programme that includes the construction of an impressive new warehouse. Inside the huge space, workers

are organised into small teams that create the products from start to finish. With the addition of Airowear, Charles Owen is surely the largest equestrian manufacturer of riding gear in the UK and together they can focus on the importance of being fully British made. For the last century Charles Owen has remained steadfast in its vision for a safer world and the last few years have been especially important with the acquisition of Airowear. Airowear has a unique ability to fit every body shape and size and combined with the engineering and technical expertise that Charles Owen has built up over many years has made for an exciting relationship. Each brand has a true passion in creating the best and to make the customer happy to wear their safety equipment. Since joining together Charles Owen and Airowear have had some exciting products in the works that utilise the expertise of both companies. An example of this collaboration is the development of a hybrid air vest gilet which will be on the market in 2015. The vest has challenged the design team at Airowear to create a comfortable and perfectly fitting safety product while utilizing the accident research Charles Owen has gathered for the last decade. Charles Owen carries out multiple accident reviews a day and has developed a very thorough understanding of the mechanism involved in injury both to the head and the body. Recently launched is the Body Base Pro – an update to Charles Owen’s collarbone protection T-shirt with an innovative new look and more technical features. The new shirt is a perfect product of the partnership – comfort from

Airowear and technical expertise from Charles Owen. Some of the most exciting results of the Charles Owen/Airowear collaboration are yet to come as the demand for better body protection with crucial fit and comfort comes to the forefront in the industry. Charles Owen and Airowear have found the solution to these requests and the technology that will be launched in the coming years will surely be sensational. In addition to using Charles Owen’s engineering and manufacturing expertise, Airowear has been able to take advantage of Charles Owen’s global logistics allowing the company to obtain easy access to the world wide consumer. With specialist support through the sales team, telephone help and the ability to make a product, no customer has to be turned away. Both brands understand the importance to the consumer and retailer of the specialist expertise that each company has built up and the ability for each company to fit the customer no matter the challenge. Charles Owen looks forward to melding into a company over the next several years where Airowear can benefit from the structure of Charles Owen but the specialism of Airowear can be maintained. “Using one’s life to make a real difference in others’ lives is

CushCare Condition is now available to stockists and is backed by a full scale marketing programme to raise product awareness, create demand and direct customers to stores. Prior to the launch of CushCare Condition, Dodson & Horrell embarked on a substantial trial period, working with vets across the country to identify horses who would benefit from the feed. The results speak for themselves; 87% of owners will continue feeding CushCare Condition after reporting improved coat condition, appetite and weight gain.
Dodson & Horrell commercial director, Derek Mackey, explains: “Up to now vets and stockists have not been able to recommend a product that effectively manages the needs of older horses who appear in poor condition and are in need of something extra. There simply have been no appropriate weight-gain feeds with a low enough sugar and starch content to minimise the risk of laminitis. “Now stockists can freely advise customers to buy a safe feed that will adequately support these older horses – CushCare Condition is the answer: a feed that enables condition gain but is suitable for horses prone to laminitis, plugging a huge gap in the feed market.” CushCare Condition provides calories whilst being lower in starch and sugar. Long boots, full chaps & over trousers Manufacturers are now embracing all shapes and sizes with long boots and legwear that look good and fit well for every rider.
I
n recent years long boots both for riding and for country walks or yard work have evolved dramatically, not necessarily in styling, which remains traditional, but in fit and flexibility. Competition boots are still tending towards very slim fit Spanish tops, but now all boots are offering more sizes and varied fitting options. Michelle Girling, managing director of Tuffa Footwear, has recently designed and launched two new styles of boot, both for riders with broader calves. Interestingly, the size range available on both Broadland and Breckland boots has increased since they hit the shelves, with Plus Size Extra Wide fitting a 21” calf, due to customer demand. Michelle says: “At Tuffa, we pride ourselves on finding solutions to problems: Easy Peasy Pull On Chaps are a great example of this…when a problem arises, we look at how to fix it. We’re lucky that our customers are very vocal and ask for our help with problems they’re facing in the footwear department…and the lack of quality long boots for riders with broader calves was an area that was mentioned over and over again. People were bored of boots that were just scaled up as
the fit wasn’t right, and if you’re competing or just riding at home, you want to be comfortable and look good too. Of course, bespoke boots are an option, but these are out of most people’s grasps, so we set to work on creating something that was new, for our customers that wanted it.” It’s not just broader calf fittings that have revolutionised long boots, competition boots designed for younger riders, or petite adults, are now available. Toggi’s Charleston boots provide a funky, more personalised option for younger riders, in smaller sizes and flexible fits. Tredstep Ireland has essentially scaled down the popular Donatello boots, so they not only appeal to younger riders, but also petite adult riders who don’t want a ‘juniorlooking’ long boot, but just a grown up boot that fits smaller legs and feet. “Year after year our customers have requested a smaller-sized tall boot to accommodate both junior and smaller riders,” said Aidan Keogh, Tredstep managing director and chief designer. “The Donatello Junior is a proper fitting tall boot meant to provide a beautifully designed and affordable choice for those riders.”

Special Report
Healthcare education offers business boost
Equestrian Business puts the spotlight on the importance of preventative healthcare practices and biosecurity.
V
eterinary experts have issued a timely reminder to horse owners to ensure their animals are vaccinated against equine flu after a raft of new outbreaks have been recorded in the UK over the last three months. “Since mid-August there have been 25 reported outbreaks of equine flu throughout the UK, with virtually all outbreaks in horses with an incomplete vaccination history,” says Nicola Snowden BVM&S MRCVS equine veterinary advisor for Keeping Britain’s Horses Healthy. Equine flu is a highly contagious disease; yet adopting preventative healthcare practices such as vaccination can reduce the impact on both individual horses and the wider equine industry. Surely, it’s now time for some joined up thinking regarding horse healthcare, connecting all sectors of the equestrian industry for the good of the equine population? While horse owners will invariably see their own individual horse/s in isolation, it’s time organising bodies and yards took more control over the ‘groups’ of horses in their care, thus helping to protect the UK’s ‘herd’ of horses. The best advice for any owner concerned either about their horse’s health or to discuss preventative healthcare practices is to talk to their veterinary surgeon. For both owners and yards further consideration should also be given to biosecurity and how best to ensure a yard is protected from the introduction or
Nicola Snowden BVM&S MRCVS Equine Veterinary Adviser for KBHH
transmission of disease. Equestrian bodies and competition organisers can also help by ensuring that the rules for competing horses being vaccinated are also being adhered to, by making sure that passports are rigorously checked before horses are allowed to enter the showground. We all know that some event organisers are less strict than others in policing this aspect. Isolating new horses to the yard for a minimum of two weeks is a key element, but so too is ensuring people coming on to the yard are not carrying disease. Having simple measures in place such as hand washing facilities, hand sanitisers and foot dips at the entrance to the yard is a great step, as is making sure horses don’t share water and feed buckets and that all implements, as well as stables, are kept thoroughly clean and disinfected on a regular basis. Advise customers that effective biosecurity doesn’t have to be difficult or interfere with normal operations, but that practical measures can be included in their day-to-day activities which can make a real difference. While none of us wants to experience a disease outbreak, simply to boost business, it is a fact that correct and timely education can help to reduce the spread of disease. Consider stocking biosecurity products such as disinfectants next to stable implements and have essential smaller items, such as rubber gloves and scrubbing brushes in stock in all sizes. Stocking items in a range of different colours can also ensure horses only use their own equipment. It also pays to equip yourself with some knowledge on where to point customers should they have any real concerns; undoubtedly their vet in the first instance with any concerns concerning the health of their horse, but also to websites such as www. healthyhorses.co.uk, www.aht.org.uk, www.beva.org.uk, www.noah.co.uk and www.bhs.org.uk that offer advice on biosecurity and vaccination as well as healthcare practices.
Where are the outbreaks? The outbreaks recorded by the Animal Health Trust at the time of publication are extremely widespread as follows:
15th Aug West Lothian 19th Aug Bedfordshire 11th Sept Sussex 15th Sept Cornwall 23rd Sept East Lothian 25th Sept Perthshire 25th Sept Essex 25th Sept Somerset 29th Sept West Sussex 30th Sept Staffordshire 8th Oct Ayrshire 10th Oct Scottish Borders 21st Oct Warwickshire 23rd Oct Ayrshire 27th Oct Cumbria 27th Oct Perthshire 27th Oct Worcestershire 31st Oct Worcestershire 31st Oct West Midlands 31st Oct Kent 31st Oct Scottish Borders 4th Nov Cambridgeshire 7th Nov Kent 7th Nov Buckinghamshire 12th Nov Leicestershire
How does it spread? Flu is an airborne virus and can rapidly spread through a yard or even to neighbouring yards under the right prevailing weather conditions, particularly where there are susceptible unvaccinated horses. As such, these 25 outbreaks may quickly spread locally and to other regions, particularly if there are large numbers of unvaccinated horses.
of virus shedding after infection is significantly less. For vaccination to be most effective and to control infectious and contagious disease, consideration needs to be given not only to the individual horse but also to the immunity of the equine herd.” Herd immunity describes the situation when a sufficient proportion of a population – though not necessarily all – are vaccinated against a disease. If there are too few susceptible horses in a population the disease is unable to spread. The minority of horses who aren’t vaccinated will receive protection because the spread of the disease is contained by the large majority that are. Essentially the principle can be described as safety in numbers. Information drawn from the number of flu vaccinations sold to vets in the UK last year indicates that less than half of the UK’s one million or so equine population is vaccinated. This is not enough to establish herd immunity and therefore leaves our UK population of horses at risk from flu. To minimise the risk to your customers’ horses and to prevent the spread of equine flu in your area, encourage them to ensure their horses are vaccinated against equine flu and urge them to motivate the owners of other horses in their yard to do the same. Your customers can find out more by visiting www.healthyhorses. co.uk for expert advice on preventative healthcare to help keep Britain’s horses healthy.
How is it prevented? “Vaccination is key in the prevention of infectious and contagious diseases such as flu,’ says Nicola. “Not only are unvaccinated horses at risk of ill health themselves should they become infected, but they also pose a risk to other horses as they shed large amounts of the contagious virus. Although vaccination does not provide complete protection against disease, the clinical signs and level
