To top off this success, he graduated in 2013 with a distinction and so quickly earned a full time job within the company. “Bryn has proved to be a great asset to our team and has been able to cast a fresh set of eyes throughout our range of timber products, looking at new materials and modern methods of construction. Sarah-Jane Fedarb, managing director of Finest Brands International comments: “We first came across Jason when one of our team attended one of his clinics with her own horse. She was hugely impressed with Jason’s practical, easy to understand approach to training horses. It became clear to us that Jason and his ethos of ‘creating a balance between horse and rider’ was an approach that fits perfectly with our Toggi and Champion brands and we’re delighted to support Jason and his team in their work.” On his new sponsorship, Jason comments: “I’m so delighted to be working with Toggi and Champion as I’ve been a huge fan of their products for many years. My team and I are out in all weathers, all year round so it’s vital that we have the
right gear to keep us warm, dry and comfortable and our Toggi gear does this job to perfection! Safety is also crucially important to me. We have many youngsters and horses with challenging problems coming through the yard each year and it’s vital that my staff and I wear an up to standard riding hat to help keep us safe. I love my new Champion Air-Tech helmet as I can wear it comfortably all day long and with the peace of mind that it is made in Great Britain by Champion – a company with an outstanding reputation for safety.”

orseHage has announced it is to continue supporting the Meirionydd Special Riding Group – a registered charity and member of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) based in the Meirionydd region of Wales – which has been providing riding and horse care opportunities to people with physical disabilities, special needs, behavioural difficulties and mental health problems since 1973. For the last four years, riders have qualified to go through to the National Countryside Challenge Finals at Hartpury College, and within the last couple of years, two riders have qualified for the dressage finals. However, the group is currently at full capacity, due to the restricted number
of suitable horses available to rent at the riding stables where the sessions are held. Therefore they have expanded the group to set up an equestrian vaulting session. The group currently uses Sheridan – a 12-year-old cob – for teenage and adult vaulters and has recently been gifted a pony by a local couple to start training for the future of the younger vaulters. Said Matthew Cooke of Friendship Estates, regional producer of HorseHage: “The Merionydd Special Riding Group provides a valuable facility in the area and the fact that these RDA horses do so well on HorseHage helps us to shatter the misconception that Horsehage is too high in energy for the everyday horse. High Fibre Horsehage is the ideal forage alternative.”

Insurance for
TACK SHOPS
Insurance for your tack shop should not be thought of as just another business expense. It is an investment that will safeguard and protect your business for whatever eventuality may occur. Equine insurance specialist Angie Bailey from Ryan Insurance Group Ltd explains more. What do I need to consider? It is firstly important when starting out to think of the construction of the premises that you trade from as this will have an effect on your insurance premium. If at all possible it should be brick built with a tiled pitched roof. It is not impossible to insure timber built premises, but insurers prefer a more standard construction, due to the fire hazards that surround timber construction and the ease of which they can be broken in to. Next we need to think of the security. Tack is very attractive to thieves, so you should make sure that all opening windows have key operated locks or are barred, and all doors have five lever mortice deadlocks. It is also advisable to have an alarm. Although insurers may not insist upon this, depending on the stock that you have in the premises, it is still a good deterrent against break-ins. If your sum insured for tack is high, for example over ÂŁ5,000, insurers will insist upon an
8
alarm and sometimes if the sum insured is higher this will have to be linked to a police station.
What about my contents cover? You will more than likely be offered a package that will include everything that you need under one policy. This will include cover for your shop contents, stock, business interruption, money, employer’s liability, public and products liability, goods in transit and in many cases legal expenses. The building can also be covered under the same policy if you are responsible for it. When you request a quotation you will be asked a set of questions, for example the age of your premises, what contents and stock sum insured would you like. If you have this information to hand it will be much easier to obtain your quotation. Your contents will be anything that you have in your shop other than stock. So this would be your till, shelving, stands, chairs, checkout etc. The stock sum
Equestrian Business Monthly | December 2013 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
insured should be the price that you would have to pay to purchase any items should they get stolen, not the sale price to customers. With regard to stock, make sure you tell insurers if you have any second hand items for sale as they will not automatically be included. Employers and public liability will provide cover for staff and members of the public visiting your premises. Cover is provided for people whilst on the premises only. So if you ever send staff to an equine exhibition of have a stand at a show you will need to tell insurers and make sure this is also covered. Again if you take any of that stock or racking off the premises then you will need to inform insurers that you need this covered too. If you run a riding school from the same premises you may think that your staff are covered under the riding school liability policy
but this is not always the case, please check with your broker. Goods in transit cover should also be considered as it will cover you for picking up stock or deliveries to your customers. However you would not be covered for taking a horse to a show or the vets; you would require a separate policy for this.
Where can I obtain a quotation? I would suggest that you use an insurance broker as they will be able to carry out a market exercise on your behalf rather than ringing around multiple insurers yourself. A broker who has some expertise in the equine area will be beneficial; although you are not covering your livestock etc it is still important that your broker has an understanding of your requirements and ultimately your business. â–

soft sheepskin and gel will help customers protect their saddles from dirt and wear and protect their horse’s back too. Training aids have always been popular and the variety is still expanding. Start off with a basic lunging kit for those new to the skill, including a lunging cavesson, long lunge rope and whip. Rollers in both synthetic and leather will be good stock items and of course the added training aids such as draw reins, Pessoa’s, EquiAmi and the like. Although it is nearly impossible for the retailer to ascertain whether the customer has the right skills to use these products, it might be worth dropping into conversation some good advice on the use of these items – in many cases training aids used incorrectly can do great harm, so if the customer appears unsure how to use a product perhaps direct them to a good local instructor or towards a book on the subject. At least make sure you know how to fit the training aids you stock, so you can advise the customer how to get started. One of the most popular
prototypes went through several steps then field trials at busy yards and therapy centres followed by a final refining stage before we considered it was good enough functionally, aesthetically and in performance for retail.” Lungeing is a specific skill and some horse owners underestimate how useful it can be for training, instead just spinning their horses round on a rope for exercise. Hilary says: “Lungeing a horse is like an athlete doing a workout in the gym. You are trying to develop specific muscle groups that will then enhance its athletic performance whatever the discipline. The EquiAmi lungeing aid encourages the horse to step under from behind and swing through its back whilst at the same time it invites a soft, equal contact and lifting of the shoulders, developing balance, self-carriage and improving the paces and topline. The EquiAmi lungeing aid is especially beneficial to horses who dislike restriction and restraint and those who try to lean as it discourages this. It has been used on horses of all ages and

lunging training aids is the EquiAmi and its creator Hilary Bentley describes the product’s development: “The EquiAmi lungeing aid was developed specifically for one lovely mare who, despite treatment, couldn’t be persuaded to use her previously painful back. She wouldn’t have liked the restriction of other aids and could lean on most other things. I endeavoured to make something that moved with her and prevented leaning. Initially baler twine was used but when I realied I had made something really good we enlisted the help of a Walsall saddler to make prototypes in better materials. The

Many of our retailers use one of our aids themselves so they are very knowledgeable when it comes to advising customers and explaining the simplicity and benefits of the aid. It is also useful to have a wide range of lungeing equipment as many customers require the whole kit: roller, cavesson, lunge rein, lunge whip and training aid. Brushing boots and gloves are

also recommended so should be positioned prominently.” Alternatives to traditional tack are a good idea too – the popularity of bitless bridles is growing so it pays to offer one or two types of bitless bridle to your customers, as well as synthetic tack to broaden the appeal. At the moment a number of different equestrian groups are campaigning to national equestrian associations to allow all riders to compete in all UK competitions, including dressage, in bitless bridles. If this rule change comes into place the demand for bitless bridles may well increase as the choice to ride without a ‘bit’ in the horse’s mouth should be at the discretion of the rider, based on what best suits their horse in terms of welfare and performance. In a coincidence of timing the Netherlands Dressage Association has simultaneously issued an international statement to say that following a three year trial of bitless bridles in dressage they are now permanently amending the rules to incorporate bitless riding in Holland, which it is hoped will strengthen the campaign in the UK. In situations like these it pays to be prepared, so keep an eye on rule changes within the various equestrian federations, not just for bitless rules, but also for things like training aids, martingales and different types of bits. Although a retailer may not be able or willing to provide training advice on the use of all training aids, a little knowledge about rules and regulations could help you direct customers to a more suitable product, therefore providing a more rounded service.

■ Are any particular brands well liked and strong in the region?
When it comes to types of saddles and brands the newly Qualified Saddle Fitter should stock this very much depends on the individual, their location and the general requirements of horse owners in the area. Before going out and buying stock the Qualified Saddle Fitter should first carry out as much research as possible into what brands people in the region favour, what horse sports are the most popular in the region he or she is covering and whether there are any demographics available showing if horses or ponies are
Before going out and buying thousands of pounds worth of stock, start to build up good working relationships with a number of suppliers and brands. It may be that in many cases when the Qualified Saddle Fitter gets called out to a yard, the owner will want a bespoke saddle made for their own horse or pony. The PolyPads Classic is a versatile, rectangular saddle pad, available in three thicknesses to alleviate any pressure points and accommodate the changing shape of the horse as muscles develop while getting fit. It stays firmly in place without the need for straps or loops. Quick and easy to put on, it washes and wears exceptionally well and can be used either way up or any way round. Available in three sizes, three thicknesses and 12 quilted/20 binding options. Plus a reversible hi-viz option.
The ThinLine Trifecta half pad with sheepskin rolls features medical grade sheepskin on a cotton base which creates a wither profile and spine free channel, allowing the Ultra ThinLine to lay on either side of the spine so that it is always in the right place. It can be shimmed to adjust saddle fit. ThinLine absorbs 90% of the concussion generated from the horse to the rider and the rider to the horse. It is 100% breathable, non-slip/ non-stick and infused with an active antimicrobial/anti-fungal agent.

Special Report
Saddles for
Thoroughbreds
Thoroughbreds have specific needs when it comes to tack but one company, Harry Dabbs Saddlemakers, has developed a saddle for these tricky customers. Peter Wilkes from the company explains more.
T
wo years ago Harry Dabbs Saddlemakers was approached by the TRC (Thoroughbred Rehab Centre) to develop a saddle that would enable their horses to fulfill their potential. To complete the research between the TRC and Dabbs, the company also brought in ACPACT Horse Physiotherapists and Society of Master Saddlers Qualified Saddle Fitters. The research was led by Janet Blackburn of Just Saddles. Dabbs is the only manufacturer that has specifically researched saddle fit on Thoroughbreds in such detail and continues to work with the TRC and also Equine Management and Training (EM&T) – consultants to the ROR.
Specific needs The conformation of most Thoroughbreds prevented a perfect fit from almost all saddles available on the market – including Dabbs saddles. Stereotypically Thoroughbreds have a long high wither, deep hollows either side of the withers immediately behind the shoulders, require wider clearance of the spine and are croup high. Exracers can have additional back problems such as scoliosis or a kyphosis (spinal alignment issues). It would be normal
practice for initial re-training to be purely ground work prior to even contemplating a saddle fit. Saddle fitters are taught to look at the true drop from front to back, and so decide on gusset depth at the back of the saddle. Historically a high headed, narrow tree with a deep rear gusset would be used on an ex-race horse. However the Thoroughbred throws us an optical illusion making the deep rear gussets an error. The top of the wither at T4/T5 is very high; however the points of the saddle are going to sit around T6/T7. Consequently the true drop to T18 is less than it appears as the important area does not include T4/T5 where the saddle makes no contact. Achieving a good fit may result in not having the commonly recognised full three
Thoroughbreds typically have a high long wither making it difficult to fit traditional saddles
16
Equestrian Business Monthly | December 2013 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
to four fingers of space above the wither but if no contact is made and there is no interference then we can accept this ‘break from the rules’. By accepting that the saddle is fitted at T6/7, the need to include a deep rear gusset is avoided. On a croup high horse a deep rear gusset would drive the saddle into the hollows behind the shoulder. The ‘driving in’ action is exacerbated when a horse in movement belly lifts and its back rises. The best saddle fitters take into account the horse’s back shape in movement rather than simply concentrating on fitting the stationary horse. The Dabbs Performance Panel eases this because it comes away from the back of the horse a fraction sooner than traditional panels, suiting croup high and short backed horses, and/or larger riders. Traditional panels are already in contact further back so as the horse engages this lifts the saddle and creates pressure whereas with the Dabbs panel the belly lift brings the horse’s back only into contact with the saddle. As the back lifts the top line flattens, reducing the exaggerated high wither and increasing the space at the head of the saddle once the horse is in motion.
Perfect fit When fitting ex-racehorses it is critical to keep both the lumbar region free, as well as lifting the saddle out of the hollows behind the shoulder, freeing the trapezius rather than trapping it. EM&T regularly see saddles that are too narrow. They work with many horses that have been diagnosed with kissing spine to varying degrees from very mild through to surgery being recommended. Gullet width is very important as is a girthing system which does not cause a downward pressure on the affected vertebrae. A wide gullet keeps the spine free, which is particularly important for ex-race horses that have been subjected to traditional racing saddles that sit on the spine (left); whilst a deeper panel supports the saddle lower down and further back, enabling the points to be set a little wider. The deeper panel sits on the latissimus dorsi, which is connected directly to the humorous in the front leg; this enables weight to be transferred directly to the leg without going via the spine and so is more efficient. Higher up in the panel and along its length the saddle rests on the longissimus dorsi muscle, transferring forces to the spine and the pelvis and so down through the legs. We would generally not use a point girth strap to further relieve any downward pressure into the hollows behind the shoulder. Increasingly we approach saddle design and development as a science. Kath Pinington, yard manager at The Thoroughbred Rehab Centre said: “Harry Dabbs saddles provide the ultimate solution to the varying shapes of the Thoroughbred backs. The combination of trees and panel system give the horse the space to perform to the best of its ability.” In our opinion Walsall saddle makers include the best in the world. Saddles are manufactured bespoke to individual horses and individual riders and priced at exceptionally good value. Do we have the panache of French or Italian sounding names? – Non; but we give our customers so much more. ■

Al Fares Dubai – at the heart of equestrianism Al Fares takes place on October 29-31 2014 in Dubai, a country rich with equestrian heritage from racing to endurance. Read on to discover a vast market of business opportunities in the region.
A
love of horses runs in the blood of most Emiratis, especially a fondness for the classical Purebred Arabian horses that were stalwart companions for centuries. The racing season begins in November with meetings taking place at the Jebel Ali Racetrack, Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club and Meydan Racecourse. Dubai is also a world power in flat racing; its annual World Cup in March is the world’s richest race with a $10 million purse. Even show jumping, historically more of a focus in Western countries, has been growing in the UAE. One recent show jumping competition offered 260,000 dirhams ($70,800) of prize money, while show jumping Al-Fares-Ads-2.ai 1 11/14/2013 9:30:06 AM horses bought for as little as $5,000 in Eastern Europe can
fetch prices of $80,000 in the UAE if they perform well. The industry is also supporting the development of home-grown businesses within the UAE. Several studs in the UAE breed pure Arabian horses, not only for races but also for horse beauty contests, which are popular across the Gulf Arab region. Dubai’s Godolphin stable, which flies some of its 400 horses to Britain in April to race and escape the Gulf’s summer heat, has made $14.8 million in prize money so far this year. That brings the total to $232 million since 1992. Monthly stable, feed and grooming costs typically range from $650 to $1,090 or more, compared to around $450-$970 in Britain, people in the industry said. According to the data compiled
by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (EFI), 7,282 horses are registered to UAE owners, out of which there are 2,000 active endurance horses and 87 racing stables. Compare these to 4,320 in Australia or 800 in France, where riding is extremely popular as well and the business stakes fall in context. Lack of grazing pastures and the harsh climate means that upkeep of these competition horses is even costlier than elsewhere. Breeders import hay and feed from

countries as far as Canada and USA and those associated with the prized equines are constantly looking for the best equestrian products and facilities. Certainly, the UAE takes good care of its horses. The study estimates that annual individual expenditure in the UAE on equine equipment, including sheltering and treatment of horses, is DH 120,000. ■

Charles Owen:
Raising the Standard in Equestrian Safety
I
n 1911 a man by the name of Charles Owen started manufacturing helmets for the army in the east end of London. Over 100 years later Charles’ grandson, Roy Burek, has continued the family tradition of innovating and manufacturing products for a safer world. Charles Owen decided to expand outside of just manufacturing helmets for the army and in 1928 the first Charles Owen motorcycle helmet was born in the London factory. This motorcycle helmet marked the involvement of Charles Owen in the revolution that has become the modern look of helmets today. A decade after the release of the motorcycle helmet, Charles Owen took its first steps into the equestrian industry, the field the company is most well known today, by developing a Racing Helmet for Jockeys. In 1938, the winning jockey of the famous Grand National Steeplechase wore the newly launched Charles Owen Jockey Helmet featuring its patented head fitting system. Charles Owen has continued the tradition of supporting equestrians at the top of their sports over the decades that followed. After celebrating its centennial in 2011, Charles Owen took a chance on supporting an up-andcoming dressage rider when the company welcomed Charlotte Dujardin into the Charles Owen family. What a result, as Charlotte embodies the brilliance of British Dressage and has become an international pioneer for equestrian safety. Winning double Gold at the 2012 Olympics in London and breaking world records left and right along the way has been a dream come true for all involved. “Using one’s life to make a real difference in others’ lives is what drives me, like it did my father and grandfather” said Roy Burek, Managing Director of

Charles Owen. The values that my grandfather had are well established in my DNA. The challenges that made the company flourish in his time are still very much here today: Fashion, Fit and Function. Staying true to one’s traditional values has been the secret of the company’s longevity, along with a bit hard work.” Charles Owen has evolved from innovating and manufacturing army helmets to motorcycle helmets to equestrian helmets, but over the last century the company has never lost focus on its roots as a British family company.

Looking after the elderly The market for products aimed at the owners of elderly horses is huge, with feed and supplements dominating the sector, but with the elderly horse population growing it is a sector you can’t ignore. Dental problems We all know that you can age a horse from its teeth, but by the time the horse can be classed as a veteran they often require more regular checkups. Uneven wear, loose teeth and other problems can make it difficult for horses to chew effectively, and there are a whole raft of feed products you can recommend to help in this scenario. Lizzie Drury Msc Rnutr, senior nutritionist at Saracen Horse Feeds explains more: “Dental problems are common in old horses no matter how well they may look or perform and frequently results in the loss of body weight and inability to maintain optimum condition.” Dietary fibre is the most important consideration when designing a diet for any horse but perhaps even more so for the old horse when dental health is impaired. Lizzie says: “Imperfect mastication will impair assimilation of energy
20
and other dietary nutrients from the feed. Ideally there should be daily access to pasture, as this is easily chewed and digested but through the winter months this will also need to be supplemented with additional fibre sources such as hay, haylage, Super Fibre Pencils and chaff products.” Fibre Every horse benefits from a high fibre diet and veterans are no exception. Providing that they can chew and digest it a forage-based diet is optimum as Serena Kidd from NetTex explains: “Older horses ideally will benefit from high forage diets as this provides essential calories which is not only a source of energy but also provides heat which in turn helps to keep them warm. Good quality forage that is not dusty and not too coarse especially if they are very old and have dental problems so it is easier for them to digest.
Equestrian Business Monthly | December 2013 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
Haylage is often fed in the winter as it’s a little softer for them to chew but if too rich can upset the balance of bacteria in the gut leading to loose droppings; in this instance the hay or haylage can be soaked to reduce the nutritional content for them. Also not over loading the hard feed rations they receive with high starch and protein based feeds will also ensure the balance of ‘good gut bacteria’ are not upset. Feeding oil is also beneficial as they can offer essential fatty acids such as omega 3,6 and 9 and offer a source of slow release energy without adding significant weight gain. Oil will also help to lubricate the digestive system making it easier for older horses to chew and digest hard feed rations more easily.” Condition Although many veterans do well on forage, during winter months or if their workload increases
further hard feed may be required to maintain or build condition. There are a number of feeds branded ‘Veteran’ on the market that are worth recommending, but you are not limited to these feeds only. Lizzie Drury explains what to look out for: “For many veterans well-formulated senior feeds such as Veteran Mix and Pencils will meet their requirements and support light to medium work intensities. These should have a minimum of 12% dietary fibre and a protein percentage that is between 12 and 16%. Digestible energy levels are typically around the 12-14MJ Kg region, which is similar to some of the working mixes available on the market. To ensure that cereals such as barley and maize are digested properly these should be micronised or steam cooked. These cooking processes increase the surface area of the grain for enzyme digestion thus decreasing the risk of undigested starch reaching

Veterans the hindgut. The inclusion of digestible fibre sources such as soya hulls, sugar beet pulp and alfalfa are also included to help boost fibre intake and reduce the reliance on cereals to provide a large proportion of the digestible energy. Protein should be of high quality and contain the essential amino acid lysine. This is often achieved by including soya bean meal in the formulation. Mineral and vitamin fortification should be higher than that for standard maintenance feeds to account for a possible age related decline in digestive efficiency. Antioxidants, such as vitamin E and selenium are particularly important for those veterans that are in regular work as these help to protect living cells and muscles against the harmful effects of free radicals that are produced during metabolism. Insufficient antioxidant protection may lead to increased muscle soreness and longer periods between full recovery.” Digestion/probiotics Alongside being able to chew effectively, good digestion is also important for elderly horses to ensure they make the most of the feed provided. Lizzie Drury says: “Aging may also adversely affect digestive function. In one study, the digestibility of protein, fibre and phosphorous were lower in mares over 20 years of age compared to mares of less than ten years of age (Ralston et al. 1989). It has been hypothesized that poor dentition and/or the effects of parasitic larval migration in the large intestine were responsible for the lowered fibre, protein and phosphorus digestibility, although more research is required to clarify these issues.” Adding a pre and probiotic supplement to the hard feed will help to support a healthy gut function and Serena Kidd explains more about these minimarvels: “Probiotics will support gastrointestinal health as they are a live micro-organism that help colonise the ‘good’ bacteria within the gut, preventing the ‘bad’ bacteria colonising the gut. Prebiotics stimulate the growth of ‘good’ bacteria to help ensure the balance of beneficial bacteria is maintained allowing the gut flora to function effectively and support a healthy gut function. This means that both the use of pre and probiotics will complement the overall
22
“Antioxidants from a plant-based source are included to help combat free radicals and maintain your horse in good health. “Nettles are naturally high in vitamins and minerals and therefore make this herb ideal for use in feeds to help in the nutritional support of the circulatory system, rheumatism and arthritis, which many older horses can suffer from. “Mint contains flavanoids that act to relax the digestive tract and most horses also find the aroma and taste of mint to be particularly appealing; and salt provides two important electrolytes – sodium and chloride. Mollichaff Veteran also contains added limestone to provide additional calcium and biotin for healthy hoof growth.” Veterans such as Lucy, pictured, can still do well with the right diet and care. Image courtesy of HorseHage gut health of the horse and will allow for better vitamin, mineral and trace element absorption from hard feed rations thereby allowing the horse to gain weight and maintain it, reduce loose droppings and promote overall health and vitality.” Lizzie Drury also highlights that: “There is also some evidence to suggest that some prebiotics enhance the equine immune system.” Key ingredients There are some key ingredients in feeds to look out for to benefit veterans. Apart from pre and probiotics and joint ingredients such as glucosamine, other ingredients can support the veteran. HorseHage’s Mollichaff Veteran is “a balanced blend of dried grass, dried alfalfa and high quality oat straw and is topped with a unique dressing combining linseed and soya oil with a small amount of low sugar molasses and added vitamins and minerals, plant-based antioxidants, biotin, mint, nettle and salt.” The company explains that each of these ingredients plays a role in veteran health. “Linseed oil is a rich source of amino acids and essential fatty acids including Omega 3 which can help in the nutritional maintenance of arthritis and inflammatory skin conditions and also help optimise the immune system.
Equestrian Business Monthly | December 2013 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
Joint supplements With teeth and digestion catered for, customers may also be seeking help to keep their veterans moving. Serena Kidd explains more about the market for joint supplements: “Each horse is different so for instance joint supplements that contain glucosamine to build new cartilage, chondroitin to combat and neutralise destructive enzymes in the joints and hyaluronic acid which builds up synovial fluid for joint protection, are often the main ingredients
that people look for. However it is also the combination of other actives included that enable a product to work effectively.” Think outside the box Apart from feed and supplements, there are plenty of other products that are highly relevant to the older horse. As muscle tone diminishes many older horses have more protruding withers and spines, creating a need for high wither numnahs, perhaps a different saddle and adequate cushioning maybe in the form of half pads or gel pads. Veteran horses may very well remain active well into old age, but could require a bit more support for their legs, with bandages and support boots required. If they are struggling to eat from the floor a hay rack may be better or a raised bucket. As they get older horses often feel the cold more as they may struggle to maintain condition – a lightweight but warm rug is important so it doesn’t put pressure on the hips and withers but helps to keep body heat in, whether turned out or kept in. Other products to aim at the veteran owner include magnet and massage therapy products to help pamper ageing joints and improve blood flow. ■
Serena Kidd’s top sales tips
1
Always offer good advice on a range of products available in store with information or training that has been supplied by the manufacturer or supplier so that the customer can make an informed and educated purchase
2
If you do not have an answer to a specific customer question be honest with the customer, always offer to find the answer. They will respect you far more for it and trust you, creating repeat business
3
With so many products available customers look for personal endorsements from sales staff that have used products that have worked for them. However an element of no-bias again builds trust
4
Always be understanding and listen to the customer to define their needs. Money is tight and often they may be embarrassed by not being able to afford a slightly higher priced product even if it is more economical longer term, fits better, stronger material etc so USPs are important to explain the differences between competitor products and pricing
5
Most importantly make every customer feel valued, whoever they are, what they look like, where they come from or their background. It is our job as manufactures or suppliers to educate the end user in a comfortable environment for the welfare of the horse, not to discriminate or judge

Non-prescription healthcare
Off the shelf SOLUTIONS
Winter skin conditions, minor bumps and ongoing ailments all prompt horse owners to seek nonprescription products from the retailer. Whether they need a product for first aid or something to use alongside veterinary prescribed medication, this sector is growing in importance as new ingredients rise to the fore.
P
rescription medication is clear cut – you have to be a vet or Suitably Qualified Person to supply a prescription product to a customer. Of course, in the case of anthelmintics, the retailer can supply a suitable product, providing all the SQP guidelines are followed. But there are other ways to get involved in the healthcare market, without a qualification. There are a vast array of skin creams, herbal supplements and other products that contain active ingredients that can assist with medical conditions. All of these items must be very carefully labelled and must not be presented as a Veterinary Medicinal Product (VMP). For skin conditions A vet may be called to stitch up a wound and prescribe pain killers, but for many horse owners a trip to the equestrian retailer swiftly follows for a skin healing
cream. Anything that can help to speed up healing, prevent infection or reduce scarring is always appealing in this situation so provide a range of products that may help. Stocking up on bandages, gamgee and a product like Animalintex is often the first port of call, but alongside these offer antibacterial sprays and creams as well to provide another option for customers. There is plenty of choice in this sector, with
“ Hypochlorous acid is changing the way we manage skin conditions and wounds” increasingly technical elements and unusual active ingredients to aid healing. For instance Hypocare contains uses hypochlorous acid to aid wound healing. “Hypochlorous acid is changing the way we
What is a VMP? A VMP is defined in Veterinary Medicines Directory legislation as: “Any substance or combination of substances presented as having properties for treating or preventing disease in animals; or any substance or combination of substances that may be used in, or administered to animals with a view either to restoring, correcting or modifying physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action, or to

Rosehip helps maintain joint mobility
manage skin conditions and wounds and retailers are cashing in on this revolution by stocking Hypocare,” says Tracey Woods, sales and marketing manager for distributor Westgate EFI. She continues: “Hypocare is an anti-bacterial spray made from hypochlorous acid that mirrors the body’s immune system. Working naturally with the body, it rapidly kills bacterial, viral and fungal infections.” In nature, the body’s immune system sends neutrophils to the site of an open wound to fight infection. These white blood cells engulf and rapidly destroy invading pathogens by producing hypochlorous acid. Hypocare mirrors this immune response making it ideal for cleaning and flushing wounds, or tackling troublesome conditions such as rain scald, mud fever and thrush. Joint health For some, joint support is an important aspect of their horse’s
healthcare, and here again is a broad range of non-prescription healthcare products to support joint health and promote mobility. Litovet is a unique, patented horse feed supplement for equine joint health. It’s made from the specially cultivated rose-hip Rosa Canina containing high levels of the active ingredient GOPO (glycoside of mono and diglycerol), which is scientifically documented to help maintain joint mobility in humans and horses. This is one of many products that has been scientifically tested. The market for non-prescription healthcare is so buoyant that it is constantly evolving and products are becoming increasingly complex, whilst still not quite becoming medicines. Often, these products use natural ingredients and become classified as a nutraceutical, although these still must not make medicinal claims. Litovet says: “Scientists have documented the striking effects of GOPO in humans for several

Non-prescription healthcare years. Now similar studies on horses fed Litovet, suggest it has a similar effect in horses.” A study of over 70 horses at Charlottenlund Travbane, a Danish trotting track, showed improved suppleness after exercise. It is these kinds of scientific study that add credence to a product and can help you to sell to customers looking to support their horse’s health. Nutraceuticals Many of these supplements which support equine health but do not need a prescription could be classed as nutraceuticals. The word ‘nutraceutical’ combines ‘nutrition’ and ‘pharmaceutical’, suggesting a food or food product that provides health and medical benefits. As nutrition can play an important part in treating or managing certain equine conditions, nutraceutical products may have a beneficial effect on certain horses when included in their ration, and may also be used
when medicinal products, such as Bute, might not be practical – for example, when competing. Chondroitin and glucosamine Nutraceuticals containing chondroitin and glucosamine are increasingly used to manage conditions such as equine arthritis and joint disease. Chondroitin and glucosamine are naturally occurring chemicals in the horse, and aid the production of cartilage. Previous research has indicated that a high quality chondroitin and glucosamine supplement can benefit horses with joint problems – the former ingredient by blocking the destructive enzymes from breaking down the cartilage and the latter by helping to synthesise new cartilage. Essential fatty acids The natural diet of the horse is low in fat; however, horses do require certain essential fatty acids (EFAs) in order to stay healthy. Adding additional sources of EFAs to the

diet via a nutraceutical product can help promote joint motility, as well as healthy coat and skin. Further benefits may include boosting immune, reproductive, heart or respiratory function and healthier hoof growth (useful for laminitics), and can have a calming effect on nervous or excitable horses. EFAs can also act as an anti-inflammatory, thus decreasing the need for products such as Bute. Antioxidants Antioxidants help to neutralise the destructive ‘free radicals’ accumulated in the horse, such as those obtained through exposure to ultra-violet sun rays, x-rays or pesticides. Common antioxidants include vitamins A, C, and E and the minerals selenium and zinc, and all benefit the horse in slightly different ways. Some feedstuffs already contain certain antioxidants that will help fulfil the horse’s daily requirements – for example, quality alfalfa hay is an excellent source of vitamin A. However, there may be certain scenarios
when a nutraceutical product containing additional antioxidants may be advantageous. For example, horses are able to synthesise their own vitamin C, but in older animals this ability may be limited. As the destructive effect of ‘free radicals’ accumulate with age, older horses may therefore benefit from added antioxidants in their diet. Performance horses meanwhile may profit from receiving added vitamin E, and breeding animals will also have additional antioxidant requirements. Seek advice It is all too easy for customers to grab a non-prescription healthcare product off the shelf to try to assist the treatment of their horse’s condition, but they must be sure that the condition doesn’t need veterinary treatment. Any product that can be bought off the shelf is no guarantee that it can cure a horse’s problem, whether inside or outside the body, so veterinary advice must always be sought. Whether these products are used as a preventative measure, to provide extra support to a mild condition not requiring medication but under veterinary care, or to support alongside veterinary medication, this section of the market requires careful handling. Keep point of sale such as leaflets and instructions close by the product and take advantage of any product training offered by the manufacturers, so you can be sure that you know the strengths of each product as well as their limitations. ■

Important minerals
Every Day Tangle Away is a new product that helps maintain a tangle free, conditioned full mane and tail. Leaves a silky feel and lustrous shine, while protecting the tail hairs from breakage. Coat Shine & Mud repeller offers instant shine and condition, coating individual hair strands and protecting against dust and stains. Flyaway’s Gloss in a bottle is a professional level grooming product to not only show the horse’s coat at its best but also detangle tails and repel mud, saving hours of grooming time and preventing the horse from becoming sore and sensitive from harsh grooming or losing tail hair.
These days ordinary UK pasture simply does not contain all the nutrients that the horse needs. Mineral and vitamin deficiencies are an important cause of weakened body defences and weak joints in almost all horses. These are challenged all the more at times of stress and disease. So Global Herbs supplements are formulated to feed in the natural balance that every horse needs. A good example is GlobalVite; one of very few mineral supplements packed full of the important chelated (bound to proteins) minerals. These minerals are highly absorb-able and about as close as you can get to the nutrients that a horse would find in its natural environment.

The natural choice
LitoVet, from Lanes Health, is the only equine supplement in the UK that contains GOPO - one of the main active components found in the Rosa Canina rose-hip. GOPO (glycoside of mono and diglycerol) has been shown to help to maintain soundness, suppleness and mobility in equine joints and joint tissues. LitoVet is 100% plant-based and vegetarian. Prices start at £49 for a 1.5kg tub which will last one horse approximately two months.
Hypocare is an anti-bacterial spray made from hypochlorous acid that mirrors the body’s immune system. Working naturally with the body, it rapidly kills bacterial, viral and fungal infections. The simple spray pack and no-rinse formula means that it really couldn’t be easier to apply, while the sting-free solution makes it suitable for even sensitive or nervous animals. Hypocare can be used for cleaning or flushing wounds or is also effective at tackling winter skin conditions such as mud fever or rain scald.

ithin the competition world there is still a strong vein of the traditional and most riders will always choose a classic black long boot. with ‘proven podiatry design’ to support the foot and insulated waterproof upper that makes winter a little more comfortable. Country boots are of course still the ‘must-have’ item, and the range is expanding here too. The trick here is to cater for all budgets, with Horze’s Rovigio Tall Boots coming in just shy of £100 and the Ariat Glacier Tall at £260. Don’t underestimate the power of the wellington boot though – premium wellies with stylish designs and bright colours are all over the high street, and horsey people do appreciate a tough, hardworking wellington boot such as the Worklite boot, that last for more than just one winter.

Knowledge-sharing
– vital for the equestrian industry Specialism is good if it overlaps and links into other specialism with roots in the same field! I suggest this vital linkage is happening less and less with the result that many ‘problems’ are being perceived in unhelpful isolation. Equestrianism is far, far from immune.
T
ake my own area of expertise – saddle fitting – as an example. I benefit from the fact that I evented at international level and trained horses and riders in this country and abroad. This affords me a fairly good understanding of equine conformation and movement – crucial – and an appreciation of how defects in the rider’s position impact on the horse and the saddle. I also benefit from the fact that I worked with eminent saddle-makers to design and create a range of saddles. No – I couldn’t make a saddle from start to finish but I do have a pretty good understanding of the processes involved. Whilst a little knowledge can, indeed, be a dangerous thing – especially when the individual with the rudimentary knowledge perceives himself as an authority – there is no doubt in my mind that holism and a sharing of knowledge helps. Perspective is all and, ‘rounded’ as I am, at the same time I am very conscious of how much, on some occasions, I depend on the knowledge of vets, farriers and other specialists. With these thoughts in mind, I am working with Hadlow – one of the UK’s eminent landbased colleges blessed with an outstanding equine department – to set up Fellowships and initiate other measures that will afford degree students opportunities to widen their understanding of the equestrian industry, broaden their knowledge and achieve introductions leading to job offers with progressive career structures. So many young people decide to undertake an equestrian-related degree or other programme simply because they ‘like horses’! Of course that is an excellent starting point but the numbers of progressive jobs directly related to horses is limited and
Coordination and cooperation could seriously advance the equestrian industry
career satisfaction is only likely to be achieved by investigating the many facets of the industry. Examples: breed associations, the British Equestrian Federation involving the BHS, British Eventing, British Showjumping,
“ Any initiative that results in shared knowledge and greater professionalism has my vote.” British Dressage – Vaulting, Carriage Driving and the Pony Club/ Welfare bodies, insurance, manufacturing, retailing, PR, press and marketing, specialist estate agency, et cetera. I would also like to see undergraduates given greater opportunity to experience firsthand the additional qualifications they will need to specialise in, for example, equine nutrition. I would like to see a series of internships set up. I am fully aware that some employers in other business areas have set up schemes that are little more than
sweatshops committing young graduates to mundane tasks that afford very little opportunity to witness, and gain an insight, into the core business. My thinking is simple; every degree student should be afforded opportunity to undertake a minimum of twelve days’ unpaid work (expenses covered by the employers) that is diverse, stimulating and insightful. Coordination and cooperation along these lines could seriously advance the equestrian industry. Young graduates could seek out jobs that would embrace their particular abilities and talents. Employers would gain valuable insights into personalities likely to fit into their business. Setting this up would initially involve a fair amount of administrative work, but the accumulated benefits, from all perspectives, would be vast. Such an initiative would be a more sophisticated, more coordinated, more comprehensive – and more
useful – addition to the work experience placements already arranged by some institutions. Hadlow College is enthusiastic about involving students studying for a BSc (Hons) in Equine Management at its main campus and those studying for the new BSc (Hons) in Equine Sports Management and Rehabilitation at the Royal Greenwich Equestrian Centre (an Olympic Legacy project in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich). Mark LumsdonTaylor, Hadlow’s FD, has a City-related background and he is enthusiastic about the potential. He comments: “Any initiative that results in shared knowledge and greater professionalism has my vote. All we need now is serious and comprehensive industry engagement.” I would like to see every equestrian business engage – and all – repeat, all – colleges and universities that offer equine-related degrees participate. In time the scheme could be extended from a national to an international level – after all, why limit an initiative that has so much going for it? I have no doubt this scheme would bring to light some high flyers who will make valuable contributions in various equestrian business sectors. A structure of this type may well be perceived as a blueprint in other industry sectors. No bad thing for the equestrian industry to be regarded as an innovator – a leader! I shall be delighted to receive comments from all sectors of the industry. ■
