Outstanding achievement honoured T he British Horse Society recognised outstanding equestrian achievements at its annual awards on Friday November 27 at Saddlers Hall, London. Among the recipients this year were people who have gone above and beyond to help horses in need, those that have spent hours teaching young people equestrian skills and those who have dedicated land for bridleways. Former editor of Horse & Hound, Lucy Higginson, was awarded The Elywn Hartley-Edwards Award, which is given to a writer, broadcaster or publication whose work has been particularly beneficial to the wellbeing of the horse. Lucy became the first female editor of Horse & Hound in 2002. Speaking on the day of the awards she said: “It’s lovely to be recognised when good work is done by teams of people. I accept this with thanks on behalf of the many great people I have worked with over the years.” The President’s Award went to Joanna MacInnes, for her work for the BHS North England committee. She said: “It feels totally mind blowing. I can’t
believe it’s not somebody more deserving of it than I. “I have always believed in the whole ethos of the BHS. Everything I believe the BHS does for safety, getting horses off the roads through access or welfare are all things that are really good and essential for horses.” Sue Coombe-Tennant has dedicated 30 years of service to The British Horse Society. After receiving her award she said: “It’s hard to believe that it has been 30 years. It’s been really good fun and I think it has been a nice way of giving back something for the fun I have had with horses. I have met great people and have done some really brilliant stuff over the years.” RAF Shawbury were presented with the Tarquin Award, for making a significant contribution to equestrian safety. Squadron Leader Kim Leach was thrilled: “I just want to say a big thank you to the riding community in Shropshire who have really got behind us. This is just the start of a big campaign that will last for several years, hopefully we will carry on building those relationships and everyone will benefit.”

Dates set for Outdoor Trade Show T he dates have been confirmed for the Outdoor Trade Show (OTS) 2016, which has been moved to a slightly earlier date of September 7-8 2016 at its usual central location, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Reduced from three days to two in order to make it a more timeefficient show for exhibitors and visitors, the organisers will soon be opening for bookings.
OTS has come a long way since the inaugural event in 2006, where 46 exhibitors and 621 visitors were hosted in one hall at Stoneleigh Park. Last year, OTS celebrated its tenth anniversary and hosted 133 exhibiting companies and 1277 unique trade visitors, who attended the show to check out the latest products and innovations across the industry. It ultimately presents
a fantastic opportunity for retail visitors to see a wide variety of outdoor brands presenting clothing, footwear and accessory products in the exhibition halls, at the same time as allowing camping and caravanning retailers to browse through the hundreds of tents and caravan awnings on display outdoors. Creative displays rewarded T
wo creative equestrian retailers have jointly won a closely fought competition to celebrate the launch of Spillers Happy Hoof Molasses Free. Youngs Animal Feeds in Congleton, Cheshire and Martins Farm Shop in Arnold, Nottingham have each bagged themselves £125 worth of shopping vouchers for the festive season. Claire Dyett, category manager
at Spillers says: “It was difficult to decide between Youngs and Martins as both have gone to considerable effort. Both displays are located in prime space, but where Youngs really stands out, Martins is very much in keeping with the brand. There were some other excellent entries, but we felt overall that these two winning displays have more longevity.”

Changing lives through riding A
project to encourage more people with disabilities to benefit from horse riding has met with a seal of approval and is now set to move forward into a new era. Riding for the Disabled
Association (RDA), in partnership with Hoof, the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) participation initiative has launched ‘Accessibility Mark’, following a successful pilot of the scheme in
2015. Accessibility Mark delivers training and support to riding schools to help them provide a quality experience for clients with disabilities. RDA and Hoof hope that the accreditation will

encourage more people with disabilities to take up riding. 22 riding schools gained accreditation as part of the pilot project, and the scheme is now open to all centres approved by the British Horse Society (BHS), the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) and the Pony Club (PC). As well as encouraging riding centres to sign up to the scheme, RDA and Hoof will be spreading the word to wouldbe riders about the increasing opportunities for them to take up riding in their local area. “Riding is a great activity that thousands of children and adults with disabilities already enjoy at RDA centres all over the UK,” says RDA Chief Executive, Ed Bracher: “With Accessibility Mark we will provide training, assistance and accreditation to riding centres, schools and clubs to encourage even more people to take part. We are delighted that the pilot scheme has proved successful and look forward to signing up many more Accessibility Mark centres in the years to come.”

he Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has published a new guidance document for people working in horse riding schools and livery yards in order to help them improve and implement safe working practices. The guidance document, (Health and safety in horse riding establishments and livery yards - What you should know), was co-authored by Dr. Michael Sinclair-Williams and Karen Sinclair-Williams and builds upon previous guidance published by the CIEH. The publication is designed to share best practice and improve health and safety knowledge to aid horse riding businesses and those who regulate the industry so that they can protect and enable a safe environment for the wider horse riding public. In 2015, 2.7 million people in Great Britain rode horses and the equestrian sector contributed £4.3 billion to the economy, incorporating consumer spending across a wide range of goods and services each year. Whilst horse riding is an established pastime, there are risks involved. The environment can present hazards, such as falls from horses, fire, as well as potential injuries from being kicked when handling horses. In addition to sharing best practice, the guidance document includes a legislative overview
for horse-related businesses and typical hazards found, as well providing guidance on implementing effective safety management systems for the work environment and individual work practices. Under the Health and Safety (Enforcing Authority) Regulations 1998, local authorities are the designated enforcement authority for the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and its relevant statutory provisions for most riding establishments. Under the regulations, horserelated businesses need to ensure they protect their employees, riding school clients, contractors and other members of the public including volunteers. Co-author of the guidance document, Karen SinclairWilliams, says: “Whilst this document is meant to be considered as guidance for riding schools and other horsebased businesses, ultimately people should make their own assessments and use sound judgment to manage risks. “We hope that businesses are able to use this document and ultimately, we want everyone who enjoys riding or handling horses to continue to able to do so whilst being safe and secure.” The health and safety guidance document can be downloaded on the CIEH website: www.cieh.org/ health_and_safety_in_horse_ riding_establishments_and_ livery_yards.html

Devil’s Claw joins Prohibited Substances List T
he 2016 version of the FEI Equine Prohibited Substances List came into force on January 1, with a small number of changes. Possibly the most significant of which is the addition of Harpagoside, more commonly known as Devil’s Claw as a Controlled Medication. This is an anti-inflammatory product with pain-relieving properties. Devil’s Claw is frequently used in equine supplements, so check your shelves to make sure you are able to give the correct information to customers who compete at affiliated level. The best advice is to recommend that competitors are extremely careful when using any supplements; there are no guarantees that any supplements are free of prohibited substances so customers should assess the need and the risk before embarking on the use of supplements. The BEF’s National Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Rules (BEFAR) adopt the FEI’s Equine Prohibited Substances List in its entirety so the changes will also apply at National level. BEFAR applies to all riders, drivers and vaulters

the company has built up an impressive clientele including Olympic riders. Mr Mian said of the honour: “I wasn’t expecting it at all, I had no idea until I received the notification. It was a very pleasant surprise - I felt quite numb really because I didn’t have any inkling about it. You just get on with whatever you’re engaged in and do it to the best of your ability.”
competing in any affiliated competition and competitors are reminded that testing can take place at competition of any level. For horses and ponies not competing, Devil’s Claw remains a useful, natural herbal equine anti-inflammatory and analgesic for reducing inflammation in equine joints. It is often used as a replacement for phenylbutazone (‘bute’) and cortisone. Commenting on the company’s website, Andy Bell, Managing Director or Horse Answers sought to quickly reassure customers: “What this does highlight is the effectiveness of Devils Claw and the difference it can make to horses with joint problems. We get amazing feedback from customers using our Premier Flex Plus and Bute Substitute and we know how it has transformed the lives of many horses struggling with arthritis aand other joint related problems. “Be reassured that Devils Claw has not been added to the FEI list because it has been found to be harmful to horses, it is simply because of the power of its anti-inflammatory properties,” he says.

Relocation, relocation, relocation! L
eading animal health and equestrian products wholesaler, Trilanco, is delighted to announce the start of an exciting new chapter in the company’s history: its relocation to a new purpose built facility. The silver spade ceremony to mark the official start of the seven million pound project was held on December 11 2015 after months of planning and negotiations. Trilanco’s new facility will be located at Mill Farm in Kirkham, which is around six miles from its current base. The new distribution centre and offices will occupy a six acre site and will boast a 110,000 square foot warehouse that will house in excess of 12,000 product lines that are stocked by the company. The new facility will support Trilanco’s continued expansion and could also support the employment of up to 30 new team members in the future. “We’re so pleased to be able to share this news with people as it’s been in the planning stages for some time,” says Martin Balmer, managing director of Trilanco. “We’ve been looking for the perfect site to move to for a while now as our ever increasing product range, customer base and the level of business we’re doing means we’ve outgrown our current location and need more space. The new facility, which is currently being built, is a significant investment for us at some seven million pounds, but it’s going to help us to continue to improve, grow and support our customers throughout the UK

We’re really excited about this next phase – it’ll be a big change as we’ve been at our current location since 1981, but we can’t wait.” The new site is due to be completed by the end of 2016. To keep customers, suppliers and interested parties fully informed of the latest developments, the company has set up a blog documenting the build and relocation process. SCT Masterclass Matthew Sampson - Tara Wilkinson
Sampson shows SCT apprentices what to strive for S
tubbing Court Training Ltd (SCT)’s determination to encourage and inspire its apprentices and employers to strive for the highest possible standards in the world of equestrianism was demonstrated in the latest of its exclusive Masterclass series. Leading international showjumper Matthew Sampson spent a busy day at Parklands EC, Sheffield on November 20 coaching SCT apprentices and employers and giving them valuable insights on all aspects of training and riding. SCT works throughout the horse industry to provide
world-class training for young people through the apprenticeship programme. Apprenticeships enable young people to gain real, practical skills by ‘learning while they work’, which are much-desired in the equine industry. They also earn a wage and gain widely respected qualifications at the same time. Matthew Sampson has long been a supporter of SCT’s apprenticeships, and says: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for keen young people to learn practical skills that will make them very employable in the future. It was great to see
new people coming for training at this Masterclass, and also to see improvement in people who have attended previous SCT Masterclasses with me.” One Masterclass attendee comments: “This is a wonderful learning opportunity for apprentices. The Masterclass was very well-organised and offered a really high standard of teaching in a great venue – I would encourage any apprentice or employer to take up the opportunity to attend one.” For more information on SCT’s Apprenticeships, visit www. stubbingcourttraining.com.

Pensions
Workplace pensions are you in the know? Are you as an employer up to date with the changes in workplace pension rules? Ciara Bridge-Butler from the Pensions Regulator outlines what you need to do to comply and how you can find out more information.
T
he Pensions Regulator is warning equestrian businesses not to ignore the workplace pension. Workplace pensions law means all employers must assess all staff for automatic enrolment, put those who meet certain criteria into a workplace pension scheme and pay contributions into it. Currently more than five and a half million staff have already been put into a scheme by the UK’s large and medium employers, but the vast majority of small employers have yet to reach the date their automatic enrolment duties start – this is called their staging date. During 2016, around half a million small and micro employers will reach their staging date. For many of these employers, meeting their new workplace pension duties represents a cultural change – it will be the first time they have provided a pension for their staff.
A monster of a campaign
The ‘Workie’ character and the ‘don’t ignore the workplace pension’ message of the joint DWP/TPR advertising campaign was launched last year. Our message has been consistent since 2012, across successive campaigns that workplace pensions have changed and it’s the law for every employer. The Pensions Regulator is here to provide information to help employers meet their duties and our website is the place for you to find out what you need to do and by when.
12 Equestrian January 2016 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
Plan ahead If your business has a staging date in the next two months you need to finish your preparations. Lack of planning remains one of the key causes of noncompliance. We urge employers to start planning 12 months ahead of their staging date. That message is echoed by the employers who have struggled to meet their duties because they did not start their preparations early enough. Find out when you will need to act and what you need to do. With thousands of other employers going through the same process every week it is wise not to leave things until the last minute and risk non compliance and a possible fine.

The Pensions Regulator The Pensions Regulator is the UK regulator of work-based pension schemes. We work with employers, business advisers, trustees and pension specialists giving guidance on what is expected of them. Our principle aim is to prevent problems from developing. Staff who are over 22 and earn more than £10,000 per year will need to be put into a scheme, however lots of your staff may not meet this criteria. While this means you will not have to put these staff into a scheme, you will still need to tell them about automatic enrolment and give them the opportunity to join a workplace pension. You will also need to complete a declaration of compliance within five months of your staging date. This is a legal duty and shows us what you have done to meet your duties – failure to do this will trigger compliance action.

When choosing a pension scheme you should consider costs and charges and what services are being provided – for example – some schemes will write to your staff on your behalf about automatic enrolment. More detailed information on choosing a scheme is available on the regulator’s website. http://www. thepensionsregulator.gov.uk/ en/employers/duties-checker/ outcomes/i-am-an-employerwho-has-to-provide-a-pension/ choose-a-pension-scheme-orcheck-your-existing-one/

They should however have one in mind in the event staff do become eligible or choose to join a scheme. The power of turmeric Turmericle is a new product from Australian company Boomerang Nutrition Ltd, available in the UK through Stance Equine.
T
urmericle is a unique golden powder created from a blend of turmeric (curcuma longa), powdered coconut oil (PowerStance), ground black pepper and resveratrol. Turmeric has a long history as a traditional medicine and is believed to have antiinflammatory properties. Turmericle may be used for: skin allergies and sarcoids, boosting circulation and blood flow, inflammation of the joints and muscles (arthritis). The inclusion in Turmericle of coconut oil and
black pepper aids the absorption of the turmeric and resveratrol in the digestive system, increasing the benefit, plus the benefits of feeding coconut oil. Resveratrol is a naturally occurring compound found in cocoa beans and red grape skins and is better known as the health promoting component of red wine! It may help to boost the antioxidant properties and so amplify the benefits of turmeric, coconut oil and ground black pepper. All in a no mess, no fuss, ready to feed powder!

“
Base Mix fed together with Healthy Herbal Chaff are two of our best selling products as Base Mix provides all of the required vitamins, minerals, pre and probiotics and essential nutrients in a quality base of linseed, nutritional yeast and rice bran, without any of the waste by product fillers and bulking agents found in most commercial feeds,” says Dr Deborah Carley, senior nutritionist and founder of Thunderbrook. “However some horses are extremely good doers and for them a high specification vitamin, mineral, probiotic and essential nutrient

balancer is more appropriate as it contains negligible calories. For these good doers no additional hard feed is required – just a spoon size measure of Daily Essentials fed dampened down with a handful of Healthy Herbal Chaff alongside plenty of good quality forage.” Daily Essentials is incredibly good value for money. At just 70p per day to feed a large 500kg horse, it provides the full daily recommended rate of the
main vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids according to National Research Council guidelines. It has high levels of all B vitamins which are needed for healthy energy metabolism, so it is an excellent product for competition horses too. glucosamine and mobility herbs for nutritional support of the musculoskeletal system and joints. The results of the company’s 30 day feeding trial speak for themselves: 100% of horses maintained a healthy bodyweight, or lost weight if they needed to. Over half of owners on the trial reported that their horse’s coat had improved and that their horse’s appetite was better. 60% of owners felt that their horse’s temperament and quality of life had
improved while on the trial. Shannon’s owner noticed a real difference while trialling CushCare Supplement: “He loves it! He was never a particularly picky eater, but he would quite often pick out the carrots and apples, eat half of the feed then leave the rest to
revisit later. Since introducing the supplement, he literally licks the bowl clean every feed! And I don’t blame him – it smells divine! “Since starting on CushCare supplement, his coat looks amazing. Usually after a clip, it takes ages to get the shine back, but it was there after a day this year. For a 26-year-old, his energy levels are good, his appetite is good and his initial stiffness when starting work has decreased. I’ve been very impressed with the product, and was delighted to have been able to trial it.” CushCare Supplement can be fed on top of the horse’s existing diet and is ideal for older horses and ponies or those who need extra hormonal or metabolic support.

Marketing
Media Management understanding your audience It used to be relatively easy to predict which publications your audience was likely to buy, but as digital advertising continues to grow, it is now essential to combine both online and offline media management in all of its many formats, if you are to create a successful campaign.
W
e asked specialist equestrian and countryside PR and marketing agency PressPoint, whether printed publications are still an important part of media management and what your options are for reaching your audience online?
The value of printed publications
Figures made available from PwC’s Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2014-2019 predict that the amount of money spent on newspaper advertising is set to decline by £290 million during the next five years, however, this doesn’t mean that offline advertising is dead, and when used well, it can still be an extremely effective way to reach your targeted audience. Despite its decline, printed media such as magazines and newspapers have some distinct advantages over the online approach. According to the Journal of Research, multi media advertising options such as videos and links are distracting to the reader, and the study suggests that consumers might not take in digital content in the same manner they absorb printed material. Moreover, with printed media, the consumer decides how long they stay on a particular page of a publication without having to scroll down or click to read more. Another major advantage
22 Equestrian January 2016 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
of printed media facing a decline in advertising is that there is less competition, helping your brand to stand out from the others. In addition, printed material has a much longer life span and magazines often get passed on, which gives the advertiser more opportunities to get their message across and in front of the right people.
Online media – maximising your opportunities
Study after study has shown the huge surge in consumers who now go online to find out the information they need, and with the growth in mobile devices this trend is set to continue. This means it is essential to maximise the number of online media opportunities if you want to successfully engage with your chosen niche, and there are numerous ways of achieving this.
Content creation
Whether the aim is to educate, entertain or raise awareness of a brand, creating content that is easy to share and eye-catching such as videos, slide shares, infographics, glides, galleries, newsletters, eBooks, case studies and whitepapers are all excellent ways of letting people know about your brand and what it does. When creating content, think about your niche and what you feel they want to see and what they are likely to share.
Blogging
Blogging is an option that is open to everyone; it doesn’t have to cost anything and it offers an easy way to engage with your niche and your potential customers. Blogging is also an easy way to build backlinks to your main site, thus helping its ranking, and it also aids in building consumer trust by providing up-to-date information and giving potential buyers an insight into how your brand works and thinks. If you decide to use blogging as a platform, update your content regularly, ask your readers the questions they want you to answer, make sure the posts contain useful information that give value to the visitor, and add social media links so your content can be shared at the click of a button.
Press releases
One affordable way to maximise online opportunities is to make use of the many press release sites that are now available. These provide an ideal opportunity to announce your brand’s latest news, product developments, or anything that might be of interest to your niche, however, targeting your message is crucial if this approach is going to be a success. Send your press releases to the
appropriate media – including all of the blogs and websites in your niche – and contact your local newspaper to gain some interest from a community perspective. Also make sure you have the right contact, journalist or editor for the best chances of success.
Outreach blogging and Social Media
Another effective way to reach your audience is outreach blogging and social media. For outreach blogging, find blogs in your niche that attract a large following. Before contacting a blog owner, read the blog and gain a good understanding of it before offering them content that is valuable to their audience. Social media is also a useful, free tool that can be used to get your brand noticed online. Follow the influencers in your niche; find out how they approach social media and then adopt a similar way forward.
If you are looking for a fresh approach to your PR and marketing in 2016, contact PressPoint for further details on +44 (0)1953 851513, email enquiries@presspoint.co.uk or visit www.presspoint.co.uk

Celebrating 30 years of
It is an exciting year for family business Honeychop, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. Part of the business himself, Stephen Honeywood describes the company’s background and looks to the next thirty years.
T
he Honeychop range is lovingly produced on the family farm in the heart of rural Suffolk. We use the highest quality Conservation Grade oat straw, which is home grown, or locally sourced, from our carefully selected British growers at ‘Fair to Nature’ standards.
In the beginning
Robert and Valerie Honeywood were seventh generation farmers looking for a new way to diversify from the family farming business. One day in 1986 their daughter brought home her first pony and along with her, a bag of chaff, which then sparked an idea. Having examined the chaff, it
appeared to be nothing more than poor quality straw mixed with molasses and Robert knew he could produce a superior product; so that is exactly what he did. Being a family business, Val wanted to come up with a name that was close to home and meant something so she used the prefix of ‘Honey’ (from the family surname) along with the word ‘chop’ which is another common term meaning chaff, which gave her Honeychop. The initial emphasis was always on quality, consistency and attention to detail and still 30 years later they remain the core values of the business.
Moving on
The logo and bags have been developed over the years, but the biggest change is the machinery. Back when it all started the straw was fed into a mixer by hand and product was made in batches of 40, which would take over an hour. Today everything is run though our state of the art packing line and we can produce up to 400 bags per hour. With the new machine came our new packaging and we feel our branding is now stronger than ever and clearly identifiable in any store.
Standing out from the crowd
Unlike many other fibre feeds on the market, Honeychop is produced using only oat straw. We do not and will not use cheaper and less digestible wheat and barley straw; we want to produce the best possible product, and in our eyes that requires using oat straw. Oat straw is softer, has a lovely golden colour and tends to be the most palatable straw due to lower lignin content, which
24 Equestrian January 2016 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
makes it easier for horses to digest. The oat straw used in Honeychop products is sourced from our own or specially selected Conservation Grade farms. One stipulation to be a member is that 10% of the farmed area is committed to a range of wildlife habitats thus ensuring the natural species of the countryside are able to flourish. We can trace every bag of Honeychop right back to the field in which the straw was originally grown. As well as being UFAS accredited, all our crops are grown for human consumption; so our customers can be assured that the quality of the feed is of the highest standard.
What’s new
We have just given the Honeychop website a makeover so make sure you pay it a visit! More excitingly last year we launched our Honeychop Star program. Alongside our sponsored rider, international show jumper Tim Page, we now have seven Honeychop Stars. The Stars all come from different backgrounds and were the chosen seven out of hundreds that applied for the opportunity back in September. They now all have their very own blogs on our website, a monthly feature in their local magazine, Honeychop goodies and lots of support over the coming year. `
Support for retail stockists
As a family business we really do care about supporting all of our stockists big or small. We
supply and support a large range of wholesalers, which means retailers are able to buy in large or small amounts as and when they need to, rather than having a direct account and having to take stock that isn’t needed and takes up valuable space. We support retailers wishing to promote our range with literature, special offers, store visits and we try to make sure everyone is on our stockist locator on our website (if you are not on there and wish to be added, please contact us). Without a price increase for the last three years, Honeychop continues to offer good margins on a quality product.
Plans for the future
With the huge success of our new Free From Chopped Oat Straw product we have a few ideas in the pipeline, so I’m sure you will see some more products added to our Free From range in the future. But our real plan for the future is to continue to produce a high quality range of fibre feeds, so here’s to the next 30 years. If you would like to stock our products please visit us at BETA on stand number B-2-2 or contact the office on +44 (0)1359 230823.

Advice
Trade FairTips Exhibiting at a trade fair is expensive and it is important that you get a good return on your investment. This isn’t just calculated monetarily either; trade fairs offer many opportunities in networking and brand promotion that may not result in net gain financially, but will prove fruitful in the end.
I
If you are still deciding whether to exhibit at a trade fair, there are many considerations to weigh up: is it the right audience for you? How many delegates will be attending? Can you boost your profile at the event with seminars or sponsorship? Will you get value for money on your stand and will its size and facilities be suitable for your needs? Is the cost of travel – particularly overseas – justified by the reach of the show? If you are thinking of attending a trade show in coming years, it makes sense to try to visit as a delegate first, to gauge the visitors and trade stands present. This also gives you a chance to get a feel of the type of stands on offer and how your competitors approach the exhibition.
Make the most of it
If you have taken the plunge and have a stand, make sure you squeeze every last drop out of the opportunity. Before you go you need to plan the obvious points: you need to design your stand graphics, confirm what display furniture is included and plan transport and accommodation. But just as important is setting goals for the event. These will vary depending on why you are attending. For instance if you are launching a brand new company
"If you are launching a new product, seek out ways to promote your new innovations” you need to make sure you make new appointments with key contacts, ensure you are clearly branded and easy to find and hand out samples to potential customers. If you are launching a new product, seek out ways to promote your new innovations – many shows run innovation awards and special displays dedicated to brand new products so investigate how you can get involved in these.
Stand details
The look, size and positioning of your stand is key. The look is essentially down to you – although there will be a framework to adhere to when it comes to sizes, walls, the use of structures and facilities such as
power points and lighting, you do need to think carefully about your stand design. Check that the pop ups and posters all carry the latest branding and if you are launching a new product make that very prominent. Your stand also needs to represent what you want to do at the show – for instance if you have a wide range of products to sell you will need plenty of shelving, racking or stands, but if you will be there to network and close deals, then perhaps a seating area and a table will be key. A prime position on the end of a row or near an entrance or exit is best, but these come at a premium – obviously the earlier you book the more chance you have of securing a useful location. You might want to think about the location of your competitors too – if there is someone who makes a very similar product you might want to be positioned a distance away. However, if a large industry leader is nearby they could attract a lot of footfall your way.
Attracting attention
The look of your stand should reflect your business. What you produce will be entirely individual but if you do not already have strong brand guidelines to stick to, it might be worth considering what exactly your branding is. There are many stand design and graphics companies who tout for your business, but they will also need good input from you first – and the stronger your ideas, the better the outcome. The design should give a good impression of your business at a glance. If your product and company is sporting, then you’ll what clean lines and bold primary colours; if you’re aiming firmly at the country house set then you’ll want to evoke the earthy tweed lifestyle. But whatever the minutiae of the design, there are also some universal rules when it comes to the look of your stand: ❚ Clear the clutter – this means no half eaten sandwiches, boxes
Be smart To get the most out of the cost of exhibiting at a trade event, you need to set goals. S.M.A.R.T goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timed and Targeted.

advice
People power ❚ Key to your success at a trade show is the people who work on your stand. Here are some tips for top presentation. ❚ Stay positive – use body language that is open and welcoming, yet professional ❚ Smile and make eye contact with passers by to encourage them onto your stand ❚ Greet visitors cheerily and ask open questions to encourage conversation ❚ Don’t talk amongst yourselves or sit in a corner – nothing could make you look less interested in talking to visitors ❚ Allow everyone regular rest breaks. Working on a trade stand is tiring and you need everyone on top form throughout the day. ❚ Keep track of leads as you go, prioritising those that are very hot so you can follow them up immediately
28 Equestrian January 2016 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
“A prime position on the end of a row or near an entrance or exit is best, but these come at a premium” of leaflets or empty coffee cups left lying around ❚ not too much on display as it can all become ‘meaningless noise’ ❚ not too little either or it won’t attract any attention ❚ displays that are easy on the eye and well-lit. Lighting is all too often forgotten, but even in a big exhibition there are dark corners, so make sure you have prepared well for your lighting requirements ❚ interactivity – can you include something to taste, smell, listen to, watch or feel? These are often great ways to make a memorable impression
Shout about it Long before the show you need to make sure you tell people that you will be there. Include it on your website, on social media and in any newsletters, and invite people who may be attending to drop by your stand or make an appointment. Give details of any freebies on the stand, who they will see there and the stand number. Also make the most of any promotion offered by the
event for instance listings on a website, features in a magazine or brochure. Check out all the industry magazine for your sector and find out how you can get involved in any previews: getting the word out about your attendance is crucial.
On the day Make the most of your time at the show – although it is important that the stand is manned at all times, it is important to also move around and network so ensure you have enough people staffing the stand. Introduce yourself to as many people as possible that may be linked in some way to your business – suppliers, wholesalers, end users and retailers are all key, but also consider journalists too. There will be a press office at the event so make sure it is fully stocked with any important press releases and samples from your company. If there are key journalists that you would like to meet to discuss your products, book an appointment otherwise they may just pass you by.
Follow up
Measuring the response and results from an exhibition is absolutely crucial – both to reflect on the event and to make decisions about attending future trade events. Results can be measured in many different ways, including measurables like new Twitter followers, new Facebook likes and more web traffic. However, most important is following up all sales leads, and building on the relationships formed at the show. This might mean confirming an order, or simply just thanking someone for their time and sending a brochure via email. All contacts should be added to your database for future reference and every lead should be followed up promptly – don’t wait two weeks or the xxx contact might well have found an alternative and moved on.
Advice for visitors
If you are attending a trade show as a delegate, there is plenty that you can do in advance to make the most of your visit. After all, although you may not
“You might well stumble across something brand new that perfectly complements your business or expands it in new directions” have the expense of a stand, you still have to justify the transport cost, possible accommodation cost and the time out of the workplace. Once again, preparation is key so make sure you contact key people before the show to book appointments so that you don’t miss them. Arrange a time and a place and exchange mobile numbers in case there’s an issue. Whilst at the show, make sure you pick up literature on new products, interesting samples and attend seminars – some trade shows offer valuable training on business or technical subjects, so sign up if you have to or make a note of the time and place and attend so that you can soak up some new ideas. Make sure that you take the initiative – don’t be shy. Approach people at stands that interest you and make sure you network at any big product launches or panel discussions. Carry business cards and wear branded clothing or a badge with your information on so that people can clearly see your business. Always bear in mind your business objectives – it can be
easy to be blinded by the latest beautiful equestrian products at the top end of the market, but if you know that your customers want a lower price and good value then make sure you keep focussed on what you need for your business, rather than what’s on your personal wish list. However, at the same time you will need to be open to new ideas – you might well stumble across something brand new that perfectly complements your business or expands it in new directions.
by your trade show visit, why not let your customers know – use your website, blog or social media channels to highlight your top products and build excitement if they are coming to your store.
Visitor follow up It is just as important for delegates to follow up leads after a trade event. You may have sat down and made real orders with your usual suppliers on the day, but don’t stop there, you will need to run through all the contacts you picked up and decide if their products or services are for you. If you missed anyone on the day see if you can schedule an appointment with a sales representative shortly after the event. If you feel excited and inspired

January 24-26 will see the equestrian trade descend upon the NEC in Birmingham to showcase the latest ideas, businesses and people within this burgeoning industry. It is a truly international affair, with companies from around the world exhibiting their brands, both well-known and brand new to the UK. There will also be many international visitors flying in to visit, making the most of the great central location of the NEC and seeking out the latest products to stock their shelves and improve their business offering. Leading country clothing and shooting brands continue to add their backing to BETA International as some of the sector’s most prestigious names from the UK and overseas are signed up to exhibit at the 2016 trade fair. These include Deerhunter, Seeland, Alan Paine, Grubs Boots, House of Cheviot, Gumleaf Clothing, Ridgeline, Kanyon Outdoor, Hunter Outdoor, Stetson & Hardy & Parsons, Bogs Footwear, Zamberlan, GMK, Rockfish, Nikwax Waterproofing and Keela. “This is a powerful endorsement of BETA International and a clear reflection of the way in which the industry regards the trade fair as a force to be reckoned with,” says sales manager James Palmer. “It is the ultimate global gathering, a place where the trade meets to do business, and we are confident that, with nearly 300 high-calibre exhibitors such as these, our visitors can expect to find some of the finest products and services on offer.”

beta international 2016 New products The Shires Equestrian New Product Gallery will be located in the middle of aisle J. Products will form part of a themed display on a plinth open on all sides for maximum impact. All products will be identified by exhibitor and stand number so it is easy to browse around the latest items, take a note of the stand number and go to find out more about those that interest you. The Innovation Awards are highly respected industry accolades that reward new, genuinely innovative products – many of which can be seen in the New Product Gallery.
Make the most of it
BETA International is a huge event, with so many stands to visit it can seem daunting, especially if you only have one day in which to do it. The organisers have included plenty of ways to help you make the most of the show, and to ensure it is worth taking a day away from the business, why not combine it with some important Continuing Professional Development, a business seminar and an overview of the newest products to market. SQPs SQPs visiting BETA International 2016 will be able to top up on valuable CPD points at the show’s AMTRA-accredited seminar ‘The Dungs and Don’ts of Parasite Control’, presented by veterinary management consultant Jim Wishart. The seminar will take place on both Sunday and Tuesday at the show in the Charles Owen Learning Centre at The Horse Demonstration and Seminar Arena. “The seminars are an integral part of the trade fair and prove extremely popular with the many SQPs who come along,” says BETA International organiser Claire Thomas. “Offering the initiative on two separate days makes it as easy as possible for visitors to plan their timetable effectively, allowing plenty of time to attend the seminars, do their buying, take in the show’s special features and enjoy the considerable networking opportunities that are available.” The 75-minute seminar is free and open to all visiting SQPs. No booking is required beforehand, but those wishing to take part should bring their SQP number to register on the day.

Alongside the popular UK based brands, the iconic trade fair plays host to numerous and well established foreign brands, all market leaders in their own sectors. ■ Prestige Italia SPA, founded in 1974 through the Stocchetti-Rasia family. The business, based in Trissino, Italy, carries through without ever compromising on its leadingedge status in the sector and
its manufacturing quality. The business is a ‘Made in Italy’ success story with its ranges of saddles and leatherwork, as confirmed by the major horse riding champions who always opt for the precision and technique of Prestige saddles. Hall 8.1, stands A010 and B011 ■ HKM Sports Equipment GmbH, supplies 2,000 specialist stores worldwide. Originating in 1967 in Germany, it wasn't until the 1980s that the company started to manufacture and produce equestrian items for sale purposes. HKM Sports aims to “enable all younger people access to riding sport products at affordable prices – yet without forgoing quality,” an ethos that has proven beneficial to the business, evident through its rapid growth and change in positioning in the market. Hall 8.1, stands A060 and B061 ■ KP Italia, will as usual be present at the spring edition of SPOGA horse 2016, ready to present new models and accessories. Once again KEP Italia will discuss the importance of safety as its helmets are always the first on the international market to make the new standards and regulations about safety and are happy to have another chance to underline how safety is its daily top concern. Hall 8.1, stand B040 ■ Samshield, believes its range of hats “will bring more active and passive security, more comfort, with high quality materials and
customisation ability.” Originally in 2005 only a few riders from the Chantilly region (in France) had acquired the first helmet, but today the brand is recognised and distributed all over the world. Hall 8.1, stand D038 ■ Swedish equestrian business Mountain Horse, will be returning to SPOGA horse spring fair following a successful trade show in Autumn 2015. more than 25 airlines. Travelers can also take advantage of direct or connecting service from 31 other destinations, such as Ft. Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Oakland, Houston and Seattle.
Why exhibit?
We asked exhibitors from the US and the UK why they are attending AETA International. AWST Int'l has been attending the event since its inception and all Hopper and KOP shows before that and Jeannie Macone from the company says that the trade fair offers, “New customers, feedback and reorders from existing customers. It caters to the ‘English’ customers.” They point out that the location makes it a very important event as in the north east there is a high concentration of equestrian retailers Amy Weslman, American underwear company Knixwear explains that the company will be attending AETA International for the fifth time: “It allows us to connect with existing customers in the US and Canada and meet with potential new accounts. It also allows us to network with fellow brands and keep informed on the news trends in the industry,” she says. “It is the only gathering place for all equestrian brands in the US and is the definitive show in the industry. It brings people from all over the US and Canada and draws key industry leaders.” Experienced UK company Abbey England is also attending and Peter Phillips form the company says: “It’s the main US English riding show and is an excellent opportunity for us to see our
customers in the US and also to meet new customers. Our British goods are a big hit in the states, especially our extensive bitting range. It is smaller than BETA Int. and does not have the international visitor base of either BETA or SPOGA. As UK company Stubbs strives to grow more quickly it has started to exhibit at a few shows, namely BETA, EQUITANA (Melbourne) and AETA. Chris Bradwell, managing director, says: “Stubbs has been selling in the USA for over 40 years but as we grow we would like to sell a broader range to many more outlets in North America.” This is the first time the company is attending the fair and Chris adds: “AETA offers us access to distributors, retailers and a greater understanding of the US market; all in three days!” He also highlights the difference between the different international trade shows: “BETA gives wonderful access to world wide business. We believe AETA is much more focussed on North America. Stubbs is progressively filling in the gaps in our world markets. Last year it was Australia, where
we established distribution with Lefflers, and in January it is the USA, after what we hope will be three busy days at BETA.” Chris is clearly looking forward to meeting the American retailers and finishes: “We are well recognised by them; this is demonstrated by the regular traffic on our website. We want to better service their needs. It is very exciting!”

AL FARES
INTERNATIONAL EQUINE TRADE FAIR In 2016, the oldest and most prominent international trade fair Al Fares, will once again open its doors from October 5 to 7. A Biennial event, the trade fair celebrates its 11th year of operation with a change of venue to Meydan, a venue synonymous with prestige and class.
A
l Fares will cover the entire spectrum of the equine industry, unveiling an array of international products, services, equipment, and veterinary technology for the horse, rider, horse owners, breeders and equine professionals. October is the beginning of the equine season in the UAE and it is entirely appropriate that Al Fares hosts the event
at Meydan, turning a dream into reality. It is the visionary concept of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
Why Meydan? Meydan was conceptualized with a view to hold the world’s most coveted Dubai World Cup, a high profile horse race that attracts
horse lovers and owners, as well as the world’s rich and famous. Today, Meydan boasts holding some of the most prestigious and glamour-filled events and exhibitions attended by elite businesses and delegates from around the globe. At a strategic location Meydan is self-contained with a hotel, the best restaurants, and par excellence ambience. Needless to say, Meydan is surrounded by
stables and is home to the best of the Arabian bred horses.
Why Al Fares? More than €4.5 million ($5.6 million) worth of retail deals were signed at the last Al Fares event. More than 5,000 trade visitors from the equine industry visited the fair, while approximately 85 per cent of exhibitors have already confirmed participation

Al fares preview at this year’s event. Rasheed Mbayed, exhibition manager of the fair, which is organised by Al Fajer Information and Services every two years, said: “The GCC equine industry once again came under the global spotlight through Al Fares. Al Fares 2014 saw participation of international companies who reiterated their interest to be part of 2016 edition.” Dr Walid Sherbiny, veterinary manager, Gulf Rider, said: “This is our 10th participation in Al Fares. Since 1995, Al Fares has grown dramatically to be a leading hub for equine products, and we have been responding to that growth by booking larger stands every time. “We brought to Al Fares this year products from 22 brands from different parts of the world, mainly Australia, Germany, France, UK, and USA, in collaboration with our partners Al Awani Company. Our products vary between veterinary medicine and veterinary equipment, fortifications, vitamins, processing equipment, and stable
equipment.” Mustafa Ali Ahmed Anshan and Saif Khalifa Matar Al Mezaina, co-owners of Royal Equestrian Club Dubai, who were first-time participants, said: “Specialised exhibitions like Al Fares are so important because they bring visitors from all over the world to view the advancement of the equine sector in the UAE. Based on our first participation, we have received an overwhelming response to the services we provide. Our core focus is training riders, transferring them from beginners to world-class certified riders. “We are in final stages of launching dedicated academic equine courses in collaboration with a British academy that will operate from the Royal Equestrian Club Dubai, bringing international experts and trainers from the UK, USA, and Germany. We have also started a new service to video conference the courses, bringing our expertise to anywhere in the region. Al Fares is a great place to be seen.” Another first time participant
Michael Nosch, head of Sales, Eqvivance, a company that designs 3D statues of horses through innovative 3D scanning technology, said: “We came to the UAE because we have a passion for Arabian horses and Dubai is a big market to be in. Sponsorship in the equestrian industry is a constant topic of conversation. If it is not riders looking for sponsors its businesses attempting to find their next ambassador and knowing how to approach the subject of sponsorship, for riders especially, can be difficult. UK based Stübben distributor John Grosvalds talks through some of the ‘ins and outs’ of rider sponsorship.
Q A
W hy these riders?
Using Ambassadors to help promote the Stübben brand is still a fairly new concept for us and one that we have devoted a lot of time and energy to in coming up with the right mix of people across the three major disciplines of equestrianism. As a result, we have a fantastic team of up and coming riders; they are all very personable, presentable, intelligent and possess a natural ability to communicate extremely effectively. They all naturally represent outstanding achievement and commitment in their chosen disciplines as well as being jolly nice people!
Q A
How do you choose which riders to sponsor?
Choosing a rider is very difficult bearing in mind the huge number of sponsorship requests we get every year. Sponsorship, in its most basic term, implies remuneration in exchange for using a particular product line but we take a different approach. We prefer to use the term Ambassador as he, or she, has to genuinely want and to be proud to ride for Stübben, and, very importantly, if there is

an existing involvement or history of using our products, then this is very much a plus factor when it comes to selection. A rider who just wants as much product as they can get is not the rider for us – there has to be a genuine desire and commitment to ride our products, to be involved with the company and to enjoy the experience. The twinkle in their eye and the smile on their face when they first ride our new generation saddles tells me a lot about the person and whether or not they could be good for us and us for them.
Q
What do the riders get and what do you expect in return?
A
Each rider gets a comprehensive package consisting of saddles, bridles, girths, bits, care products and accessories of their choice. In addition, Ambassadors will receive new products for testing and evaluation throughout the term of their ambassador contract. In return, we ask that the rider actively promotes our products at every opportunity and provides leads to the sales office. We like our riders to be proactive when it comes to working with us and our dealers, at clinics, open days, events and competitions. Personal appearances on these occasions always go down well with the riding public. Our Ambassadors are all top–flight competition riders and as such, role models for their many followers and fans. Their dedication to and love of the sport shines through in their
84 Equestrian January 2016 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
personalities; this is such an important factor when it comes to representing an iconic brand like Stübben.
Q
Has the rise in social media use among riders meant that sponsorship brings you even more than it used to? Why/why not?
A
Social media is vitally important in promoting people, events and products especially in this industry. All our riders are well known to their peers and followers and having the ability to update their experiences and achievements whilst at the same time promoting their sponsors gives us a continuous and growing presence in the market place. The immediacy of Facebook and Twitter results in real time networking with our riders and subsequently gives us excellent feedback on our products with both existing and potential users. Social media also allows us to immediately answer any questions on our products that the riding public may have.
“Social media is vitally important”
Q
Why is it so important to offer sponsorship to riders – what does it bring for the company overall?
A
Sponsoring riders is hugely important in involving real people with our products. For many, Stübben is seen as an aspirational brand and having a team of Ambassadors that our
potential customers can watch, talk to and relate to provides an intimacy and reality that no other advertising or marketing medium can achieve. Most importantly, it showcases the innovation, quality and durability of Stübben products in the environment for which they are designed. Sponsorship can be extremely difficult to target correctly but by ensuring the correct demographics are in place, our ambassadors provide that vital link between manufacturer and end user whilst at the same time giving us a cost effective, productive and prestigious presence in what is an extremely competitive and ever changing business.
Q
Is there a case study of a rider that you sponsor who does exceptionally well for you, perhaps going above and beyond to represent your brand?
A
All our riders do a fantastic job for us and I’m really proud to have a team of such exceptional ambassadors involved with the Stübben name. Choosing just one is terribly difficult as they all show their enthusiasm and commitment to the brand in many and very individual ways. However, in terms of going above and beyond the norm, then this has to be dressage rider Alex Hardwick. Currently ranked by the FEI at number seven in the under 25 category, Alex has been involved with Stübben now for the past year and a half, during which time she has not only consistently provided updates on her experiences both in and out
of the saddle but has also taken dedication to the Stübben brand to another level by becoming an official Stübben dealer and Test Partner. Working with our products on a daily basis, both on the competition circuit and in the school, gives Alex an intimate and unique insight into the Stübben brand and has allowed her to seamlessly integrate retailing into her existing business with total confidence and commitment.
And finally…
Stübben is involved with many new and exciting innovations which we roll out on a continuous basis. Our riders give us the feedback to help us fine– tune these products and ensure their acceptance and suitability in a competitive, constantly changing and increasingly technical environment. To all our Ambassadors, we’d like to say a huge thank you for choosing to be part of the Global Stübben Team.

Online a laptop or desktop computer. People want to access information or place an order when it suits them; this might be when they are on the go or they might want to purchase a product while they are at work or when they are watching the TV in the evening. Moreover, a responsive website optimised for all types of devices will also ensure that the pages will load quicker – making it far more convenient to use.
The importance of mobile responsive websites According to research by Ofcom, two thirds of people now own a smartphone and they’ll use it for anything up to two hours a day to access the internet. In addition, consumers now spend twice as much time on their smartphones, as they do on a laptop or other device.
W
e spoke to Darryl Britton from Wiser Web who advises that, as these statistics show, in order to keep up with the growing demands of mobile internet users, a website needs to be optimised if it is to meet the need of the modern consumer and give visitors the optimal viewing and fast navigation experience that they have come to expect. However, there are many other benefits to a mobile responsive website.
SEO
Responsive website design can improve SEO in many ways. For instance, it can help to reduce the bounce rate and keep people on your website longer; a high bounce rate is well known to be one of the factors in a website ranking poorly on the search engines. A responsive website also solves the issue of having separate websites for mobile content; it is an established fact that duplicate content can have a negative impact on SEO; a responsive website design answers this problem. In addition, Google itself recommends that mobile websites use responsive design.
86 Equestrian January 2016 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
User experience
According to research by Google, 61% of those surveyed stated that they would go to another website if they were unable to find the content they wanted quickly. If a website is not mobile responsive visitors will find it difficult to view content; this leads to a poor user experience that can send them to a competitor. When a website automatically adapts to the size of the device the visitor is using, it helps to improve navigation and the overall experience. If a visitor can comfortably access the information on your website, they are more likely to stay, read the content and find out more about your business; this enhances the overall impressions of your website and company and assists with building consumer confidence.
Increased sales
By not having a responsive design, you risk losing out to competitors and missing out on valuable custom. Research by Google also shows that 67% of consumers say they are more likely to make a purchase or utilise a service if the site is mobile friendly. It’s also been found that mobile websites
have a higher conversion rate, thus helping to increase sales. Moreover, a responsive website can also make it easier for local people who are searching for nearby services to find your website, thus helping to fuel the growth of your business or service.
Convenience
As statistics show, a buyer is now far more likely to purchase via a tablet or smartphone and if your website is not set up to meet this demand, then you risk losing out to competitors. Consumers lead busy lifestyles and they don’t want to be tied to
Increase your chances of being found
A responsive website is now essential for being found online. In February 2015, Google published a blog post stating that it had changed its mobile search algorithm in favour of mobile friendly websites. A responsive website is also important to organic search results, which will help make your website more visible and drive more traffic direct to your site. The way people access content online is continuing to evolve and mobile responsive design offers many advantages over the more traditional static website. As well as improving SEO and enhancing the user experience, mobile responsive website design is essential to anyone who doesn’t want to lose out to their competitors and who wants to meet the demands of the modern day consumer. Is it time you looked at turning your old plod in to a top performer? Today’s consumers demand mobility and convenience - most now access websites through a mobile device, on the go. ken lyndon-dykes
The fabulous Count
Ken had the great privilege to know Count Karol Antoni Colanna-Czosnowski who died recently at the age of 94; a true gentleman, businessman and horseman. KEN LYNDON-DYKES Karol was an amazing horseman and, during the Second World War, he was involved when members of the Polish cavalry slowed the progress of German tanks by charging towards them. When I asked about this extraordinary feat Karol replied ‘They weren’t very good tanks’– as though this explained everything! Karol’s family owned a beautiful castle in Poland but he had to leave and come to England with nothing and the castle was taken over as barracks for the Russian army. Arriving in England virtually penniless, it wasn’t long before Karol was building a substantial business. He started by ‘buying’ an old naval ship which he paid for the day after the purchase by selling the vessel – with a half per cent profit! Subsequently he developed his steel business, Bishopsgate Steel, into a massive enterprise About that time I had built what was considered, in equestrian terms, an empire. I had a total of 52 shops and shopswithin-shops – including some illustrious names such as Bart J. Snowball, Frederick J. Chandler ¬¬– the longest established saddlery businesses in the
“He was one of the few – maybe the only – person about whom I have never heard a word of criticism” country which I owned – and Lillywhites where I set up the equestrian department. One day Karol asked me about my group’s turnover and I was delighted to tell him it was about £3 million, with good margins. ‘What is your turnover’, I asked. ‘Eight hundred million’, he said. ‘And what are your margins? I asked. ‘A half of one per cent’ he said. Arrogantly – probably – I responded ‘Well
88 Equestrian January 2016 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
– that’s not much!’ ‘But how many staff do you have to pay Ken?’ he asked. I replied that it was getting on for a couple of hundred. ‘Well my staff,’ he said, ‘consists of myself and a secretary’. I perceived the difference! Karol had a beautiful house with wonderful equestrian facilities – Saddlecombe Stud – at Headley near Epsom. There he kept his event, and later, dressage horses. Liz Gill, Karl’s stud groom and PA for forty years, recalls they spent every season at East Langton near Market Harborough where Karl had a hunting box and from where he hunted with the Quorn, the Fernie and the Cottesmore. The next part of the story also relates to hunting; one day Karl contacted me – his very best hunter had died, he was heartbroken and desperate for another really good horse. I had
just retired John of Gaunt at the end of an amazing season during which he was the winner of Burghley, the British Open and a list of other major events. ‘I will lend you my old horse’ I said. When I told him it was John of Gaunt he was truly amazed. ‘You would really lend me John?’ he asked. We took John of Gaunt to Coakham – then home of the famous bloodhounds – Karol rode him over a line of really big fences. Trotting back, he was beaming. ‘I think we understand one another’ he said. Karol wanted to buy John but I refused. ‘At least allow me to give you what you paid’, he said. ‘No – John will never be for sale.’ In fact, I had paid two-and-ahalf thousand pounds for the horse which, though immensely talented, was something of a rogue. (Way back in the seventies when I bought John, this was a huge sum to pay. Later
❚ Ex-international level three-day-event rider. ❚ Qualified Society of Master Saddlers’ saddle fitter and a member of the society’s executive committee, ❚ Owns and runs SaddleWorld, one of the largest saddle retailers in the UK. Ken is increasingly in demand as a professional witness and adjudicator in reation to saddlery-related claims and disputes. ❚ He is also well-known as an inspirational and interesting lecturer/speaker. his amazing competition record meant he was worth a great deal more.) So John went to hunt with the Count – and then Christmas came and with it a card from Karol – and a cheque. The message said ‘Please buy your wife a present’. The cheque happened to be for £2,500! The story doesn’t quite end there: inside the yard at Headley, on the first box on the left, there is a blue plaque with an inscription ‘John of Gaunt, Champion Eventer’. Of course, this amazing once-in-a- lifetime horse has long gone to a green paddock in the sky. ‘The horse, with beauty unsurpassed, strength immeasurable and grace unlike any other, still remains humble enough to carry a man upon his back.’ Amber Senti got that right! At least three hundred people attended Karol’s funeral. Rightly, it was a true celebration of a remarkable man – a gentleman – a gentle man. Karl was inspirational, charismatic and loyal. He was one of the few – maybe the only – person about whom I have never heard a word of criticism. He was admired and loved by everyone with whom he came in contact. He was unique and I, and many others, will miss him.

With changing attitudes to further education and an evolving job application and interview process, Mark wonders whether recruitment and training is heading in the right direction. Having worked in the education sector for over twelve years I am very aware that employers are increasingly confused about the numbers and relevance of the qualifications on offer. A few years’ back the then government abandoned apprenticeships, despite there being a number of well structured, fully monitored, desirable options available. I think I am right in saying that the equestrian industry was the first to reinstate this form of training – namely the Society of Master Saddlers’ (SMS) apprenticeships. One of the big benefits of the SMS apprenticeships is that they are fully understood nationally and internationally. They are recognised as fulfilling employers’ skill needs – and they enable individuals to set up a business as a sole trader or an SME. The fact that qualified saddlers can go on to become Master Saddlers – or Master Harness-makers – is an enormous incentive and a further mark of the scheme’s success. The New Labour government wanted a much higher percentage of school-leavers to go on to a degree programme and this resulted in a plethora of new courses in Higher Education. Some courses undoubtedly filled notable gaps and these produced very good results; others were less fulfilling. As with any market, over availability results in ‘excess’ and that leads to the product being undervalued. Of course, some business sectors are recording increased demand for graduates on a national, even global, scale but they are the exceptions rather than the rule. A lot of young graduates are finding themselves in ‘temporary’ jobs in bars, restaurants and the like, which doesn’t fulfil the reason why they spent three or more years studying. But is this to miss some of the essential, most fundamental, benefits of studying for a degree?
The way in which following a degree programme encourages independent thinking within a professional environment? Doesn’t it also offer a different set of social opportunities? Aren’t the opportunities to discover latent talents and abilities important factors? Should we dismiss the chance to broaden horizons? Isn’t the basic ‘stickability’ needed to complete a degree programme an indication of motivation and determination? Job applications and interviews used to be a relatively simple affair. The interviewer had a pretty standard list of questions designed to give a very good insight into the candidate’s experience, ability, desire to ‘make a difference’ and so on. The interviewers were usually very confident and competent and were adept at evaluating whether or not the candidate had the right personal assets and would fit into their team. Once upon a time a candidate would probably be interviewed by someone in middle management and, if potentially suitable, then be interviewed by someone in senior management or at director level. Today candidates are often asked to give a formal presentation. They will have prepared it, revised it, possibly sought professional evaluation, rehearsed and practised. They may well have taken advice about the types of questions that will result – and practised the answers! They will also be adept at completing questionnaires designed to reveal the candidate’s innermost thoughts. Then the psychometric testing; it is designed to weed out inconsistencies and be very revealing. Where does all this leave off-the-cuff, no-preparation answers that reveal so much more about the candidate? Wily interviewers throw in a few really
unexpected questions that test interviewees’ ability to apply lateral thinking whilst making it tough for those with tunnel vision. Ability to think around a problem is a big, big plus – worth its weight in gold! Entire industries have been built on finding the right candidates for jobs, and businesses spend a lot of money employing their services. Yet, with all the specialisms and technology available today, the final selection results in many, many square pegs in round holes! There was a time when the interviewers’ gut instincts were important factors. By and large, SMEs interview procedures are relatively simple and straightforward; are the results inferior to those achieved by big business? I don’t think so – in fact, I suspect they are infinitely superior! I think SMEs generally have the advantage – or are more perceptive – in relation to staff training. They don’t expect any member of staff to be perfect. They are generally better at recognising important weaknesses and helping the individual to overcome them. At the same time, they value strengths and afford the individual opportunity to utilise them! After all, the best team consists of individuals whose various strengths and weaknesses form a complementary and outstanding whole. This is often made easier in small businesses where managers have greater opportunity to view and work with employees as individuals. The ability to see the person as a whole makes it much easier to encourage and utilise valuable assets whilst helping to strengthen weaker skills. Recognise creativity and far-sightedness; management should essentially involve fitting the job to the person and the person to the job!
