new study conducted by the University of Melbourne, Australia, in collaboration with the Waltham Equine Studies Group, has resulted in a more effective way to monitor body fat and weight loss in horses and the findings were presented at the Equine Science Society (ESS) in Florida in May. A new Body Condition Index (BCI) has been devised that works in a similar way to the body mass index (BMI) used in humans. It should enhance the value of Body Condition Scoring (BCS), which remains an important routine tool for general weight monitoring. In last year’s National Equine Health Survey (NEHS) overweight horses or ponies were recorded in 16.9% of cases, which was more than double the previous year’s figure of 7.8%. The NEHS also showed that only 59% of respondents assess their horse’s weight regularly, using weigh tapes and body condition scoring. The aim of the study was to develop a body condition index (BCI), similar to the body mass

index (BMI) used in humans, based on objective body measurements that correlated well with actual body fat percentage. The study involved 22 adult horses and ponies of mixed breeding with body condition scores ranging from 4 to 8.5 out of 9. Body fat percentage was accurately determined using a proven scientific method and an objective body condition index was derived based on repeated measurements of heart girth, belly girth, body length, neck circumference and height to the withers. Body condition scoring (by experienced investigators) correlated reasonably well with body fat and the new objective BCI also gave a similar good correlation. Clare Barfoot, registered nutritionist at Spillers says: “The new index is a very promising tool for a more objective estimation of body fat percentage in the field. It could be especially useful if horses and ponies are assessed by more than one person, particularly if they are not experienced at body condition scoring. A more accurate

way of monitoring fat, used in conjunction with body condition scoring, should make it easier for owners to manage weight loss programmes more effectively and this means healthier horses!”

Small businesses battle to protect ideas N

ew research from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) suggests small firms are struggling to protect the identity and ideas at the heart of their businesses. Time and money spent on protecting intellectual property such as patents, branding and product designs takes valuable resources away from business development, potentially putting growth and innovation at risk. Protecting intellectual property is critical for the UK’s increasingly knowledge-based economy. Yet a quarter of the businesses surveyed by the FSB with intellectual property rights (25%) suffered some sort of violation or wrongdoing within the last five years. With almost one in three small businesses (30%) who own some form of intellectual property rights reliant on it for 75 to 100 per cent of their revenue, infringements of these rights can be incredibly damaging to small businesses. There are a number of tools and services in place that have been developed by the Intellectual Property Office to help secure and protect intellectual property rights, helped by recent reforms,

6

Equestrian July 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

but this research shows that small firms continue to find it difficult to use them. The FSB is calling for ongoing efforts to improve signposting and simplification to encourage take-up of the available support. John Allan, national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, says: “Proper protection of intellectual property is a mainstream issue which deserves a mainstream focus. The knowledge economy, which runs on innovative ideas and brands, is becoming ever more critical to our economic success. Left unchecked, theft and infringement of ideas, patents and brand costs small businesses and diminishes their appetite to invest in their business, ultimately hampering the UK’s long-term economic growth. “Intellectual property is a fundamental building block if the UK is to become the best country in the world for innovation and creative services. Small businesses must be better supported in harnessing intellectual property in the UK and overseas. When infringement does occur, redress should be simple, swift and easy to obtain.”

wenty years after developing the first New Equine Wear protective horse boot, founder Richard Balfry is retiring from the industry to pursue other business interests. “It’s been a wonderful run and I have made a lot of friends, both in the industry and with professional riders,” says Richard, “but I am now at the age and stage where I need to conquer a new frontier for the last part of my working career.” New Equine Wear has always specialised in equine leg protection, not only the design

of these products, but the manufacture too, as 90% of the products sold by the company are made in-house. The future of the business is not finalised and Richard is keen to hear from someone seriously interested in taking the brand forward: “I believe the brand ‘New Equine Wear’ has huge potential to be expanded into almost any type of quality tack or even rider clothing. It has a great loyal following of customers, particularly in eventing, and is renowned for quality and technical performance.”

New Alan Paine HQ G

lobal heritage brand Alan Paine has moved its head office to larger premises to cope with the growing business from its successful Country Collection. The new premises offer better facilities and improved warehouse capacity. The brand last moved offices five years ago but, in the light of the continued growth, managing director James Hinton took the decision to move

again to enable the business to cater for future demand. The new office is just two miles away from its previous location. Alan Paine’s new address is: 4A Hamilton Way, Oakham Business Park, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire NG18 5BU.

Companies seek green energy options N

ew research by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has found overwhelming support for energy efficiency among small firms – with nine in ten (90%) seeking to be more energy efficient in their own business. The FSB is calling for energy companies to offer greater upfront and ongoing energy efficiency support and investment to their small business customers. One of the companies to go green is Grove Pet Foods Ltd, the makers of Vitalin and Alpha dog foods, which has installed solar panels at the its premises on the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire border. The project reflects the company’s

strong commitment to improving their green credentials, not only to benefit the business by cutting costs, but for the environment and local community, by reducing their carbon footprint. Company director, John Walgate says: “The solar panels will significantly reduce the energy bills and cut carbon emissions. Any electricity not used by Grove Pet Foods Ltd, will be exported to the grid for use by local homes and businesses. “The installation of the solar panels is in keeping with our environmentally conscious approach to manufacturing high quality pet food.”

ll signs indicate that spoga horse is excellently positioned two months before the event begins: in total, Koelnmesse is awaiting more than 400 suppliers from over 30 countries. From totally new, fresh companies through to national and international top players, the who’s who of the industry will be represented. Reaching the 75% mark, the level of internationality of the exhibitors is unique, over 30 exhibitors from Great Britain are also on board. For the trade visitors from the British island, it is the best opportunity to meet up with the entire world of equestrian sport in one concentrated location in addition to their most important, national contacts. What’s more, the conditions are excellent: Thanks to its central location in Europe, the visitors can reach Koelnmesse in less than two hours per airplane and local public transport. Germanwings, Ryanair and Lufthansa fly to the Cologne/ Bonn Airport from Great Britain several times a day. From there, the trade visitors can take the city train (Line 13) directly to the fair grounds without having to change trains, which only takes 15 minutes and is free of charge for holders of spoga horse admission tickets. The trade visitors can receive further information and also book flights and accommodations via our partners at favourable conditions via the spoga horse website (Travel and accommodation). New addition to the supporting

programme: The spoga horse award is replacing the previous Innovation Award this autumn. The spoga horse award will be conferred in the three categories: Innovations, Sales Concepts and Sustainability/ CSR. All of the nominated articles will be presented at the trade fair in Passage 4/5, which promises high information content for the trade visitors. The spoga horse auction, which also promises to offer a touch of entertainment, is also new to the programme of the autumn edition. The past season products of six exhibitors will be auctioned off every day in Passage 4/5 by an auctioneer. Career insights

Opportunities

Liam Killen describes the path to his digital marketing career.

In the hot seat…

Q A

CareerAsinsights well as being enthralled by

What is your job title and what does it entail?

Director of the Equestrian Creative Network (ECN). I act as an editor/curator/sales person/PR/accounts clerk – general Jack of all trades – but everything has the objective of promoting ECN members. The ECN is a directory and news site for the creative side of the global equestrian industry, such as designers, marketers, developers, photographers, journalists and artists. Members of the ECN create content-rich portfolios and add updates on what they’re working, and insights on current trends and techniques which can benefit the industry as a whole. It’s my job to ensure their content gets out there and has an impact on the industry. The content is relevant to a range of pros, from saddle fitters and freelance instructors to governing bodies and international brands.

Q A Q

What qualifications do you have?

BSc Equine Management, Chartered Institute of Marketing, Google Squared. What route did you take to this career?

John Davies

A

the marketing aspects of my undergraduate degree I interned for a summer in Washington DC with Habitat for Humanity in their Digital Marketing Department and got the bug. I also spent another summer riding for Mclain Ward in upstate New York and got to see how a professional yard works – learning from the team how PR and sponsorship can affect an Olympic rider whose barn is also the largest importer of European sport horses in the US. When I graduated I took a graduate role at PWC within their Marketing Department in Belfast. I made the move from Belfast to Manchester in 2008 and worked with a number of public and private sector clients on a freelance basis. All the while I wanted to ensure my degree didn’t go to waste. I worked closely with the team at PagePlay websites and helped then to reach out to the equestrian world. In 2010 I set up the Equestrian Social Media Awards, which ran for four years. As a result of these I found that there was a niche in the market. The agencies and freelancers behind the innovative campaigns didn’t have a dedicated platform to shout about their work and showcase

their talents. The Equestrian Creative Network was born – a cross between Mashable, the Drum and Creative Review but specifically for our industry.

Q A

What is the best part of your job?

Working with so many talented creatives across the globe. It’s a joy to help promote their work.

Q A

What is the worst part of your job?

I never switch off. Ever! This will hopefully change when the ECN gets to the point where I can employ people to help.

Q A Q A

If you could do any other job in the world, what would you do? Work rider at a P2P yard… sadly my back wouldn’t hold

If you could go back to your 16 year old self and give career advice, what would it be? Don’t stress about the small stuff, get as much experience as possible, and learn more about accounting!

SUPPLIERS OF SADDLERY CARE PRODUCTS CARR & DAY & MARTIN LTD, LYTHAM

Carr & Day & Martin

Celebrating 250 Years of Equine Excellence Est. 1765 Carr & Day & Martin are extremely proud to be celebrating our 250th anniversary. Founded in 1765, we are believed to be the world’s oldest company involved in the manufacture of horse care products. Having held a Royal Warrant since the reign of King George IV, we still hold it to this day for the supply of quality saddlery care products to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We are dedicated to producing super premium products that provide a complete care programme for our discerning customers.

about. Our marketing, technical and sales teams work together to educate stockists, horse owners and enthusiasts on the best way to look after their horses and care for their tack.

In the beginning... The first product manufactured by Day & Martin (as we were originally known in 1765) was a boot blacking to polish leather boots, with the first shop opening a few years later in London in 1770. Mr Day had a flair for publicity and owned splendid black horses that were used to draw the company carriages, as they delivered the products throughout London. Apart from the horses themselves, the firm had wonderful stables and equipment and used to win many prizes at local shows and events. An interest in equestrian products thus ensued and this led to the creation of our world famous Belvoir Bar Soap. Still made to the original formula, it remains the most popular glycerine bar soap on the market to this day, recently winning the Horse & Rider ‘Best in Test’ award 2014. Quite an achievement, it goes to show that quality really does stand the test of time. Following on from this, and continuing with the equine theme, the company developed another of our world famous products - Cornucrescine Hoof Ointment. Again, this product is still manufactured to the original secret recipe developed back in the 1800’s and is unrivalled in its ability to promote and accelerate healthy hoof growth.

New Innovations Product innovation and efficacy is what sets us apart and is why over the last two centuries we have remained a trusted supplier at the forefront of the horse care industry. Introduced late 2013, the MF Pro kit is the ultimate 3 step system designed to cleanse, relieve and protect vulnerable heels and legs. The ideal solution to wet and muddy conditions, this advanced system tackles a traditionally common issue in a technically progressive way.

Equimist BETA Innovation Award Winner, 2014

Conditioner and Gallop Shampoo Range are examples of such, and remain the envy of our competitors. However, it is this continuously developing and improving philosophy, which ensures that Carr & Day & Martin remains firmly established as being global leaders in equine care.

The latest innovation from Carr & Day & Martin is Equimist 360, a revolutionary new spray technology. So advanced for the equine market that the BETA judges decided it should receive the highly coveted Innovation Award 2014. With Equimist 360, all your favourite Carr & Day & Martin spray products now benefit from our exclusive application technology, allowing horse owners to get the perfect finish every time.

In September 2006, the company was acquired by the Tangerine Group of companies, a family business based in Lytham, Lancashire. All Carr & Day & Martin products are now produced at our own manufacturing site in Lytham and all to the same high standard set respectively by Messrs Carr & Day & Martin.

Moving with the times Throughout the 1900’s the company continued to grow and develop new products many of which remain in our range to this day, such as Carrs Leather Oil and Vanner & Prest Hoof Oil. Throughout its’ history, Carr & Day & Martin has continuously recognised the requirements of modern horse owners, and developed products accordingly. The formulation of our Canter Mane & Tail

Steeped in history, the comprehensive range now encompasses four distinct care categories: Leather, Coat, Hoof and Health Care, providing a ‘one-stop shop’ for our loyal followers and the discerning horse owner. Retailer support We have long understood the importance of supporting traditional retailers, which is why we do not sell products directly to end consumers or to internet only companies; we are your suppliers, NOT your competitors. We also run an industry leading education programme for our stockists, as knowledge is something Carr & Day & Martin are passionate

Still to come... This major product launch is just one of the many new developments that Carr & Day & Martin introduced in the run up to our 250th anniversary year. Over the next year we intend to roll out many exciting initiatives and strengthen further the Carr & Day & Martin brand. Horse owners can trust the name Carr & Day & Martin and be safe in the knowledge that we only offer super premium products that outperform our competitors and achieve perfect results every time.

ore and more horse owners are becoming aware of the importance of allergies and intolerances to their horse’s health and performance. Equine feed manufacturers are in turn responding to this increased awareness with a range of ‘sensitive’ feeds and supplements. However, with such a large subject how do we, as members of the equine trade, responsibly advise on what is essentially a veterinary medical condition? I would suggest that the answer is to promote knowledge of allergies and intolerances, from briefing staff on the shop floor to encouraging research among feed manufacturers and veterinarians, so that as an industry we can accurately and responsibly advise on the best products and course of action.

What are allergies and intolerances and what’s the difference?

A brief knowledge of the science behind allergies and intolerances is essential in understanding the customer’s requirements for their horse and in developing trust between the customer and retailer/manufacturer. An allergy is an inappropriate immune response to a specific protein, or allergen, in the horse’s environment. Allergies can develop in response to allergens that are eaten, inhaled or touched by the horse; allergens can even be injected during insect bites or stings. Symptoms can involve the lungs, digestive system, skin or all three but the most common sign is ‘hives’. Hives can affect any part of the horse’s skin, feel warm to the touch and can occasionally be itchy or painful. The most common allergy in horses is an allergy to pollens and spores in the air that are breathed in, resulting in recurrent airway obstruction or ‘heaves’. Similarly common

is ‘sweet itch’ – an allergy the bite of Culicoides midges, resulting in intense itchiness. Contact allergies to certain cleaning products occur and result in hives over the area in contact e.g. under the saddle cloth. True food allergies are rarer than we think but have been shown to occur in response to barley or soya for example. By contrast, an intolerance is an adverse reaction to a feed, for example, that does not involve the immune system. An example would be an intolerance to a particular feed ingredient causing diarrhoea, once diet changes, disease or stress have been ruled out.

What ingredients should we recommend or avoid?

The most important thing to remember is that, unless a veterinary diagnosis of a specific allergy has been made, when it comes to

feeding horses with suspected allergies or intolerances we often have very little information. To prove a certain feed or ingredient is causing the allergy or intolerance the owner must remove the feed from the diet, see if symptoms stop AND then re-introduce the feed to see if symptoms re-occur. Owners are understandably often reluctant to do so, which is

Top 5 allergy myths debunked

1

Introducing a new feed can set off an allergic reaction. Actually, horses develop allergies to something that they have already been exposed to, often for years – a process called sensitisation.

2

My horse is allergic to oil. Allergies develop to proteins; oils are actually very low in proteins so horses are unlikely to show an allergic reaction to them. For example, a horse that

14 Equestrian July 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

is allergic to soya will most likely not react to soya oil.

3

All the horses on my yard are allergic to one feed. Some individuals are more prone to developing allergies than others and it is highly unlikely for a group of horses to develop the same allergy. It is much more likely that you are looking at an intolerance to a contaminant in the feed, for example.

4

I have been told not to feed Echinacea to my horse with a skin problem in case it sets off an allergy. Echinacea does have a proven effect on white blood cells, however it would not cause an allergy. In fact, at normal doses Echinacea is safe for most horses, although the owner should always check with their vet first.

5

I have been told that certain supplements can

cure allergies. Once a horse becomes allergic to an allergen, or protein, they will often remain allergic for life. There are no known supplements on the market that can cure allergies or intolerances, although the diet can be designed to help relieve the symptoms. The treating veterinary surgeon may recommend a course of hyposensitisation to the allergen, but this should only be carried out by vets and is not always successful.

feeding “A brief knowledge of the science behind allergies and intolerances is essential in understanding the customer’s requirements for their horse” why the market for ‘sensitive’ feeds is growing. The best course of action is often to recommend supportive feeds and/or supplements that provide nutrients to support the immune system, skin and digestive system. If a specific ingredient is known to be causing the problem we can recommend a diet that does not contain this ingredient. Ensuring the horse is receiving the correct amount of vitamins and minerals is absolutely essential. Zinc and selenium are essential for the health of both the skin and the immune system, while there is some research to show that certain B vitamins may help to reduce itching and irritation in the skin. The horse should therefore either be receiving the full amount of a high quality, fully supplemented complete feed OR the correct amount of a high quality balancer. Priceconscious owners may often be reluctant to feed a balancer but it is important to note that good quality balancers often contain better levels of

the ingredients found in more expensive supplements. Additional supportive ingredients include protected antioxidants, such as vitamin E and selenium, which ‘mopup’ the excess damaging chemicals produced by inflammation and trauma to the skin, such as caused by itching. There is also some evidence that methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) can help to reduce irritation and itching in the skin. Omega 3 fatty acids are also vital in supporting the health of the skin and can be lacking in forage only diets. Additional omega-3 fatty acids will be provided by either additional rape or linseed oil (75 ml a day should be sufficient and avoid weight gain), or a good quality balancer. For horses that seem to have a true feed allergy or intolerance, the most common culprits are barley, soya or molasses. For owners that want to exclude these ingredients, complete feeds are available for a range of workloads. For more complicated allergies,

A ‘sensitive’ diet can promote healthy skin and may prevent dietary intolerances

veterinary nutritional advice and a ‘back-to-basics’ approach may be necessary.

What’s on the market?

Over the past five years, most major equine feed manufacturers have brought out or promoted a feed aimed at horses with intolerances or allergies, often described as ‘sensitive’ diets. These diets aim to avoid the use of those ingredients proven to be associated with feed intolerances or allergies, such as barley. Good quality ‘sensitive’ diets will also include supplementary ingredients to support the skin, immune system and digestive system. When advising on a suitable ‘sensitive’ feed it is worth looking for added benefits such as pro-biotics and protected antioxidant packages, and for those feeds that are recommended by vets. With regards to supplements

for allergies and intolerances, there are a large number of supplements available that aim to help horses with itchy skin. These may be chemical or mineral based or herbal. It is worth remembering that getting the right level of vitamins and minerals in the diet is the first step, any supplements are just that. Care should be taken with mineral supplements that they do not unbalance the diet and advice can be sought from either the manufacturer or veterinary nutritionists. Herbal supplements are growing in popularity among horse owners, with an emphasis on natural, additive free herbs. While it should be noted that there is relatively little research to support the use of herbal supplements in managing equine allergies, those containing nettle, burdock root and chamomile seems to have the best owner-reported success.

Common enquiries and how to solve them ■ 14 year old, slightly overweight Welsh Sec A child’s pony in light work has been diagnosed with RAO (recurrent airway obstruction) by their veterinarian. The pony is out at grass 24/7 and receives no other feed; owner would like to know if there is anything she can feed that will help. As this pony is overweight, there is no need for a complete feed. A high quality balancer should be recommended that will provide correct vitamins and minerals to support respiratory health and protected antioxidants to ‘mopup’ the excess free radicals produced by the inflammation in the airways, without adding extra calories. The owner may like to consider a herbal supplement that contains aniseed, garlic and hyssop, as 16 Equestrian July 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

well as management practices such as continuing to maximise turnout and ensuring any hay is fed wet.

■ An 8 year old, fit event horse has developed mild hives. The treating vet has suggested an allergy test; the owner is concerned the hives are linked to the horse’s current feed and is looking for an alternative. This horse is under veterinary care and in the middle of an investigation; it is therefore important to stress that a correct recommendation may not be made until the results of the allergy test. However, in the meantime the owner may like to consider a diet that avoids the most common culprits and that will support the horse while it is recovering from the hives. A ‘sensitive’ feed that is free from barley and molasses would

be ideal, provided it contains protected antioxidants. Just a balancer would not be suitable in this case as the horse is in full work. Additional rape or linseed oil will provide extra omega 3 fatty acids to encourage skin health. The owner could consider a herbal supplement, however care must be taken that any supplement recommended is safe to use in competing horses that may be subject to blood tests.

■ 16 year old cob in light work regularly develops severe sweet itch from spring to autumn. He normally lives out during the summer and does receive any feed. The owner is looking for a herbal supplement to help relieve the sweet itch. A herbal supplement containing nettle, burdock root and chamomile would

be appropriate for this horse. However, it would be worthwhile asking the owner if they would consider a multipronged approach to managing the sweet-itch; ensuring all aspects of the diet are geared towards maximising skin health usually produces the best results. It is important, as always, to provide the minerals, such as zinc and selenium, which the skin needs to be healthy. Additionally, extra omega- fatty acids will promote an oily layer on the skin, which can help to prevent midge biting. B vitamins may help to reduce skin itching, as may MSM. A balancer that contains all of the above will be the most cost-effective way for this owner to try to help her horse deal with the sweet itch, along with appropriate management practices.

summer healthcare “To reduce the chance of allergic reaction, careful attention must be paid to the diet”

Dust can aggravate airways in the summer

Think big

Summer healthcare products can encapsulate anything from cool therapy boots, to respiratory supplements to sun cream, so make sure you have ticked all the boxes.

S

ummer is not all fun and games for some horses, as the dry conditions and increase in pollen can trigger respiratory conditions. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common allergic condition caused by exposure to fungal spores and dust. Also known as Recurrent Airway

20 Equestrian July 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

Obstruction (RAO), the reaction is a little like asthma and can cause the occasional cough, a white nasal discharge and an increased respiratory rate, which can reduce exercise tolerance. As the condition gets worse the horse will struggle to breathe and will cough more at rest as well as during exercise. It is a performance

limiting condition. Although you may think that summer means less use of bedding as more horses are turned out, in fact it may pay to target the dust free bedding specifically. Those horses that suffer from dust and spore allergies may be better off stabled during the day in an environment as close to dust free as possible.

Items like rubber mats and bedding such as dust extracted shavings and paper could be beneficial. To reduce the chance of allergic reaction, careful attention must be paid to the diet and so directing concerned customers to dust free feed options could be another way to target summer healthcare sales. Concentrate feeds must be good quality and dust free; molassed mixes are less dusty but some horses don’t tolerate molasses well, so also stock some alternative feeds such as sugar beet that should be soaked before feeding. Dusty forage can be a real problem for horses with COPD so there may be an increased demand for haylage – although many horses don’t require additional feed if they are grazing good quality pasture, forage will still be on many people’s shopping lists as it is good for travelling to shows and when away at competitions. You could also recommend soaking or steaming hay and there are a range of large capacity soaking tubs and steamers that you could stock. For a horse or horses with a disease such as COPD, customers will benefit from investing in large ticket items such as a hay steamer. Supplements will also play a role here, with products such as Equimins’ Respiratory Formula, which is a powerful herbal extract that helps to support respiratory immunity and lung function. The comprehensive blend contains liquorice, echinacea, marshmallow, coltsfoot, garlic,

powerful nutrient support through a combination of antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium. It’s beneficial to any stabled horse to support respiratory health and can also help support horses with pollen allergies and can provide support for competition or performance horses to ensure that the lungs are functioning at maximum capacity.

Sun protection

All horses, especially those with pink skin and white markings, require

protection from the sun. There are sun creams that are specifically formulated for use on equine skin that provide the best protection and it is worth stocking a range, perhaps at point of sale to encourage customers to purchase. Simon Lloyd, director at Fly Away Ltd, explains why an equine specific formulation is important: “Products are formulated, created and ingredients chosen to create a specific outcome, like a sun cream. When any new product is launched, they have been rigorously tested against many stringent requirements to meet guidelines, such as HSE and DEFRA and are created with a specific market in mind, i.e. people or horses. Skin, sensitivity and the pH balance vary greatly between people and horses and applying a product which has not been designed for horses can cause skin irritations and reduced protection. In applying a specific equine sun cream the exact balance of ingredients is blended to offer the best level of protection and ensure that the horse’s pigment, skin and coat are not adversely effected. Fly Away & Groom Away Ltd Sun Protection also contains properties which rejuvenate burnt and sun damaged skin and is suitable for all over cover and protection to all those sensitive or at risk areas, especially muzzles, ears and heels.” Just like with humans a higher factor sun cream is more effective and provides more protection from damaging UV rays. Equine specific products are also usually waterproof and won’t easily rub off as the horse grazes, providing better protection without having to constantly reapply.

A magic ingredient

Aloe vera is a useful wonder product

22 Equestrian July 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

For summer skin conditions products containing aloe vera can be particularly effective. Simon says: “Aloe vera is a fantastic product and can be used in many different ways. Aloe has antibacterial properties, cooling and soothing properties as well as rejuvenation and healing properties. It has been used for hundreds of years as a medicinal healing product for both internal and external consumption. Aloe can be used as a wound-healing product, a cooling gel, to aid the recovery of minor wounds and abrasions

stock tips Seasonal stock rotation means that you could be moving stock around all year, but some items are available as special packs targeted for each season, with multiple products included at a good value price. This is an excellent way to encourage customers to try something new. Simon from Fly Away says: “At Fly Away and Groom Away Ltd we choose to pull specific packs together for a number of reasons. Firstly packs offer better value to the customer as in sending out a combination pack reduces any posting and packaging costs we are able to combine a number of products together. New or existing customers are not always aware of the wide range of products we now produce and in putting together a pack to meet specific requirements, like a Showing Pack, we are able to promote a wider range of products as well as offering customers an opportunity to try beneficial products at reduced cost.”

or to assist in strengthening the immune system. There are many sections of the aloe plant which are used in production and the highest quality aloe is picked, produced and packed within a 30 minute window. If the collection process is lengthened, the quality of the aloe is substantially reduced. When applied, aloe works by enhancing the body’s natural properties to remove, enhance or rejuvenate any problem areas making it one of the most versatile, successful natural remedies available.” Aloe vera can also have beneficial effects inside the horse as Aloeride explains: “Alongside its own electrolytes, aloe vera can help promote better absorption from a nutritional angle, allowing greater uptake of electrolytes in your feed and assisting the body under stress, resulting in improved recovery and superior performance.”

tack & feed room scoops though, there may be a wide range of sizes, shapes and colours available but there is one that stands out from the rest: the Stubbs scoop. Chris explains that the scoop was, “adopted by major feed manufacturers as the universal measure. Originally this was rotary moulded but demand outstripped production and has been injection moulded (with level indicator marks) for the last 22 years. It features a steel handle with kind touch ‘Stubbyfine’ coating and has been over 30 years in production with just the one improvement along the way. It is a product that is as trusted now as it was three decades ago, produced in England by a family owned business with 18 decades in manufacturing!”

The Stubbs feed scoop

It may not be glamorous, but storage, scoops, tools and accessories are important for horse owners to make the most of their space and preserve their prized possessions.

ll tack rooms and feed rooms will benefit from correct storage, and it is not just for the look of it – the right storage will help to preserve the life of rugs, tack and feed. Ensure that you really are making the most of the products you can stock by showing just how useful they can be and consider discussing storage options with customers when they make other purchases

– for instance, if they are buying a new saddle have they seen the latest saddle rack with storage? Chris Bradwell, Stubbs managing director says: “The items that really are essential are bridle, saddle and rug racks for the tack room and feed storage and scoops for the feed room. It is important to stock good quality items that customers will find durable and therefore good value for money.” Feed rooms also benefit from

efficient storage, and not just to keep tidy. Correct storage of feed in rodent proof bins and with correct stock rotation preserves the quality of the feed and helps keep horses healthy. There are a huge variety of ingenious inventions that fit in here, including the popular HayBar and Non Tip Feeders which keep mess to a minimum at feed time, all the way to tools and scoops to keep paddocks clear. For many livery yards security and individual space is important. Individual tack lockers are an excellent investment for livery yards as it allows each client to keep their own equipment in one place, and provides an extra level of security. Moveable tack lockers could also be useful for those travelling to shows – they could just lock up their tack and roll it into the trailer or lorry. Flexi Equine produces a full range of Tack Lockers within a manufacturing facility in Dublin Ireland. The range includes personalisation options for the internal layout, colours and branding, and contains saddle and bridle racks and even extras such as a drop down laptop table, interior lighting and a phone charging unit!

The Hay Bar has proven popular over the years available for purchase, to display the rugs you have in stock can also save on space. We would recommend the S90 / S91 three or five arm rug racks and the S9143 unique lifting rug rack which is pushed up once loaded; you don’t need to be six foot!

the latest in coat care

Equestrian Business asks some of the leading grooming & coat care brands how retailers can make the most of these products, what’s new and how demand changes through the season.

A

s with most things in the equestrian world, technology is revolutionising the grooming and coat care sector, with new materials in brushes, new ingredients in shampoos and show shines and new digital technology providing access to information. Sarah Turnbull of Supreme Products says: “As with so many things in life as technology and new developments have arisen, so show preparation products and turnout solutions have progressed as well. Years ago, a horse shampoo was a horse shampoo but now thanks to improved ingredients we can now manufacture shampoos for different coloured horses,

shampoos that are specialist when it comes to removing residues and product build up, or one specific to removing really established stains. “Similarly finishing touch products such as gels, glosses, make ups and whiteners are now available which previously would not have been possible. One of our latest products Hot Oil came about from talking to owners and riders and then having the facility to mix Panthenol and Collagen to help strengthen and repair damaged and dry coats. Hot clothing is something that many riders and grooms like to do, so we developed a product that could be used for hot clothing that is beneficial for coat care.” Value for money

in products is still key. Perhaps the largest audience for these products is showing, which appeals to many types of riders with varying budgets and as Sarah says: “There is now a much closer divide between professionals and amateurs and this can only be good for the sport.” As demand for quality products for the amateur riders has risen, so value for money becomes key and Nicky Darling, Wahl’s product manager for animal and pet, says: “Demand for products offering value for money alongside quality has definitely grown during recent years. Online shopping has provided a shop window for smaller brands and niche products and whilst this is positive, the issues

in focuse shampoos, glosses, detanglers, brushes, hoof picks and more, the choice faced by customers is huge. Rachael Holdsworth
European key account marketing coordinator at Absorbine provides some stocking advice to narrow down options: “It is very difficult to tell how good a product is when you look at it on a shelf – there is no way of knowing unless you try it. Sample sachets such as the new Botanicals range from Absorbine, can be helpful in launching new products. However if in doubt choose one or two reputable tried and trusted brands and stock their full range. The companies that have been around for a while should know what sells and will offer a comprehensive range to meet most needs. This will save the retailer getting stuck with slow moving products of an unknown brand.” It is often the case that brands expand their ranges due to specific customer demands, and this is what has driven some of the products in the Supreme Products range. Sarah says: “All the products we have developed and produced have been driven by horse owners asking if we can provide them so the range has grown due to consumer demand. Similarly as standards in turnout have increased so too has the need for products specific to different types. The Heritage Collection for natives and traditionals was borne out of riders saying they had a problem with manes that were too flyway or manes and tails that simply weren’t thick enough and we then looked into what raw materials we need to put together to provide the answer.

Supreme Products supports show producer Katie Jerram

“Gone are the days, especially in showing, where a bit of elbow grease is enough. Turnout is all about the very highest attention to detail and there are now so many products available that really help to make refinements and finishing touches.” When looking at products to stock, it may pay to take a leap with a new brand or product – some may seem gimmicky but if you have noticed that they have a strong presence in the media then it may be worth taking a gamble. Other products have come from an already established area – for instance the Animology products started off in the pet sector and have now expanded into equine products too. As such, customers may well recognise the name and branding from their pet products and buy for their horses too. Mixing tried and trusted brands with a few brand new names may be a safe options and Nicky advises: “If you know your customer

a new emphasis As knowledge on contagious diseases such as equine flu and strangles increases, so does demand for products that can help prevent the spread of diseases. Vale Brothers’ KBF99 grooming equipment is coated with an anti microbial product that kills 99% of bacteria. These products could form part of an all round disease prevention and biosecurity plan that professional equestrians would be advised to adopt. Cleanround horse and pet shampoos are another biosecurity product that “uses

the latest scientific technology to remove bacteria and protect the environment to the highest level at an affordable price.” The medicated shampoo can be used regularly and helps to treat ringworm and prevents most infections spreading such as strangles and mud fever. It even kills the ebola virus, proving it is broad spectrum indeed. Teamed with stable disinfectants, these grooming and coat care items are growing in popularity so it is worth checking out the options to help owners provide a ‘nose to tail’ approach to biosecurity.

base then you will understand the price points and product features your clients require. Equine consumers generally look for brands they trust so a shop full of innovative new products that nobody recognises would probably struggle. Tried and trusted brands that have the loyalty of the consumer are an essential mainstay. Some customers may be brave and try something different, and it is good to spotlight fresh and new product ideas, to add interest to the shop. But in general the average owner wants to buy the product they believe works, at an affordable price, in the knowledge they are getting value for money.”

Seasonality

Grooming kits and brushes are pretty much year round sellers, perhaps with a spike at Christmas for smart looking sets. Grooming items are also following trends though, with the fashion for ‘bling’ creeping into brush sets such as Karoo Equine’s Mahogany Crystal Grooming Set. Shampoos and coat applications are more of a spring and summer product and so your stock should reflect that. Rachael Holdsworth says: “This is a very seasonal sector – in the summer everything is geared towards show ring turnout. Horses are bathed much more frequently and even happy hackers like to add a touch of Hoof Polish or ShowSheen coat shine to their grooming routine as they spend more time with their horses during the longer days. But for the regular competitor it is the height of the show season and whatever their discipline, they want to be turned out beautifully head to hoof to shine in the sun! But this sector should not be overlooked

“The flexibility and versatility of trimmers to improve appearance, health and wellbeing is creating a more continuous demand” when autumn comes – coat shine and detanglers help to cope with the mud, grey tails should still be washed frequently to prevent staining and hoof conditioners help to maintain moisture balance in the hoof during changeable weather conditions.” Sarah Turnbull also points out that keeping the coat in top-class condition is really a year round process and not just a quick fix the night before a show, and adds: “Showing and dressage are now year round disciplines but obviously the summer months are the busiest for competitors. Many owners and producers spend the winter months preparing for when the sun shines and this can involve putting anything right that has gone wrong over the summer, such as rubbed manes or thinning tails.” Don’t forget that clipping and trimming is an important part of professional looking turnout and Nicky says: “Probably the most seasonal items are clippers and trimmers. Historically clipping season from autumn through to early spring has been the premium sales opportunity for this group of products. However we are seeing a clear transition as more people choose to clip throughout the year. For others, the flexibility and versatility of trimmers to improve appearance, health and wellbeing is creating a more continuous demand.”

he company is based in Poulton-le- Fylde, Lancashire and supplies retailers across the UK and beyond with products from the world’s leading manufacturers. In fact, with over 10,000 products in the current catalogue and new lines being added all the time, the range offered by Trilanco is second to none. In addition to popular brands, Trilanco also has an impressive range of own brand products falling under the MacTack, ProStable, Bitz, Easidri, Z-itch, ProTack and StableLine brands. The majority of these brands provide retailers with essentials that every shop should carry, with Easidri and Z-itch brands being a little bit different. The Z-itch range contains two products created for sweet itch sufferers, and the Easidri range contains six specialist products for dogs. All of these products are available exclusively from Trilanco. It’s not just Trilanco’s range that makes the company an asset to the retailer, the stock levels kept, the exceptional delivery service,

ordering methods and customer service are crucial links in the chain. “We see our role in quite simple terms, and that is to make our customers’ lives easier,” says Martin Balmer, managing director of Trilanco. “There are lots of ways that we can do this – such as making sure that we keep our stock levels high so that when our customers place an order, we’re able to fulfill it. It sounds like a standard requirement for any supplier, but the feedback we receive from our customers doesn’t suggest that this is all that common. We’ve also spent a lot of time developing ways to help make ordering easier. We have a network of Area Sales Managers, a friendly sales team available during office hours and an estore that’s available for our customers to access 24/7, so they can fit in their ordering around them and their business. We also keep our customers informed of the latest offers our suppliers are running, so they can benefit. We’re all about making things easier, better and more

efficient.” The company’s delivery service is something that customers regularly comment on. Trilanco has its own fleet of delivery vans that cover set routes across the country each week. Customers on these ‘van runs’ can enjoy free delivery on certain days and a personal service as the driver who delivers the order is a member of the Trilanco team. In addition to this, there’s a courier service for other orders, carriage paid delivery options and a low cost carriage charge of just £6.95 (UK mainland only) on orders below this level. The company also offers next working day delivery on orders placed before 2pm. Weekend and other delivery services are also available. The family business has been trading for over 30 years and has a great understanding of the trade. Over the years, the product range has grown, warehousing has expanded and improved as has the company’s infrastructure. New systems have been developed in house to ensure high order accuracy, so

as the range and company has expanded, essential parts of the service haven’t been lost. These developments have not only seen Trilanco’s customer numbers grow, but it’s also seen the company win awards and be recognised for its achievements. “It’s great to win awards and make it through to the shortlist for accolades,” says Martin. “And the last few years have been particularly good for this. We’ve won BETA Trade Supplier of the Year twice, were finalists in the Red Rose Awards and Greater Manchester Fastest 50, and most recently were recognised by London Stock Exchange in the 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain report. We don’t do what we do to win awards…but it’s very nice to be recognized.” “What’s important to us is our business, and that’s all about our customers. We value feedback, we listen to what’s being said and we do our best to improve as needed and exceed our customers’ expectations. We also value the relationships we’ve built during our time in the trade, and when our customers say we’re the friendliest team around and they enjoy dealing with us, well, it means we’re doing something right!” To find out more about Trilanco, see www.trilanco.com or call 01253 888188.

Ask the expert This month’s business experts answer key questions on business telecoms and first aid training. To ask your questions simply email editorial@ebmonthly.co.uk and we’ll find a trade or business expert to help.

Who is the expert?

Colin Penston Account Manager Ocean Telecom Colin started his career in the services sector (hotels) and then moved to Business Telecoms. He has 20 years of experience in the Telecoms industry. He is fully accredited and trained on a wide range of telephone systems, VOIP solutions and IT network accreditation, also training in phone system CRM link software and call recording solutions. He is an account manager at Ocean Telecom, one of the leading providers of communications products and telecom services in East Anglia. Q

What are the options for business phone systems?

A

Good question and a very ‘on topic’ debate in the Telecoms industry at the moment. Essentially there are two main options when choosing a new phone system for a business: either a cloud/hosted VOIP system, or a more traditional on site hardware solution. There are pros and cons for either option but it is essential that the correct internet connectivity is in place if choosing the ‘cloud’ route. All the traditional features are available on both platforms for example transfer, hold, speed dial, voicemail, call forward etc. But there are some advanced features that are bespoke (for example database/PC integration is difficult to achieve with a cloud service). Ultimately I would say it goes back to basics of finding out how a particular business operates to see what solution fits the requirement for each prospect.

Q

Can a business lease the equipment and is this cost-effective?

A

Yes absolutely, there is a very strong argument for renting the equipment and not using valuable capital from the business. Technology and software especially changes

so quickly that owning a depreciating asset is not as financially astute as renting and having a monthly budget for telecoms/technology. At the end of a lease rental you can simply upgrade the latest system or software and carry on renting at a budgeted figure. Not only that but there are corporate tax benefits available on a lease. That means no more peaks in capital expenditure and the difficult discussion from your provider saying that your system is ‘no longer supported and having to spend £1000s to bring it up to date!

Q

Does a small business need a dedicated business phone line? What is different about a business phone line?

A

No, not necessarily. For smaller businesses a cloud number that forwards to a mobile can be more cost effective. But if a small business has an office and needs to grow then a business grade line is advisable. The difference between residential and business lines is that business lines (analogue or ISDN) carry a higher support service level and therefore are repaired sooner. If opting for the VOIP or SIP (IP lines) route then a good quality business internet line with enhanced support levels is essential.

Q

How can I integrate a telephone system with my customer database?

A

In basic terms clients can install third party software to link the phone system and their CRM package. This can offer improved customer services and business processes by using CRM record screen popping on incoming calls, dial from PC screen, and the ability to record

the time and date of calls made into the CRM. Some even go as far as inserting the recorded call into the CRM. Sounds great, but careful planning is needed as not all phone systems link to all CRM packages. There are also some other technical considerations to take into account.

Q

Can I link my office phone to my business mobile and can I keep all my phone and land-based telephone services with one company?

A

All the phone systems that we offer have some sort of mobile twinning feature. You can link the two devices, so you’re always in touch. I can’t speak for other providers, but we provide packages from all mobile networks so yes the phone lines, system and mobiles can all be supplied from a single source, offering a single point of contact for support.

Q A

What technical support is offered?

Again, I can’t speak for other suppliers but Ocean Telecom are very lucky that we have a very highly skilled engineering team to help customers to plan, install and carry out ongoing maintenance. The vast majority of support issues after installation are remote and can be quickly resolved or fixed by remote access to the phone system. All reasonable remote support and changes are free of charge within a customer’s maintenance contract. In addition to the day to day support, we also send out product bulletins to keep our customers informed on technical updates. Each customer also has an account manager to keep them updated and look after any upgrades or service issues.

Who is the expert?

Michele Judd MJ Training MJ Training is a family based business. Now in its sixth year of trading, it has built up a large and diverse client base. All the trainers have or still do work in other sectors, ranging from leisure, retail, health and social care, office, construction, emergency services. With voluntary experience in the Scouting Association, St. Johns Ambulance, Community First Responders, Lowland Rescue, Caister Voluntary Lifeboat Services, National Coast Watch and more. MJ Training delivers a range of mandatory training courses in first aid, food safety, health and safety and manual handling. Based in Lowestoft, Suffolk, they work predominately in the South of England but are always happy to travel. Tel: 01502 560779 / 07973 376778 info@mjtrainme.co.uk www.mjtrainme.co.uk

Q

What sort of first aid training would I and my staff need for a large riding school?

A

The requirement for first aid training must be risk assessed by each individual business, no matter what type of business you are in. That risk assessment must take in to account the number of employees, (number of people coming onto the premises), the level of risk in that business, types of injuries that could occur and how long it would take for the emergency services to get to you. This however is not an exhaustive list. You can find out more on the Health & Safety Executive’s website and by downloading their Approved Code of Practice, (L74) at: http://www.hse.gov.uk/

pubns/books/l74.htm). You can also complete an online personalised risk assessment by going to: http://bit. ly/1vDPeMq From our experience however the full 3 Day First Aid at Work Certificate is best. However do check that the training provider you use will also give you hands on instruction on resuscitation and choking procedures for children and babies as this is not standard on this course with all training providers and rarely covered on the 1 Day Emergency First Aid at Work Course. Many training providers will try to sell you another Paediatric First Aid Course. Our equestrian clients have nearly every member of staff training in first aid, due to the nature of their work, taking riders off site on hacks around the local area, beach etc. With a mixture of 3 Day First Aid at Work Certificates and 1 Day Emergency First Aid at Work Certificates. (We also train all our first aiders in Paediatric resuscitation and choking procedures as standard, so they are also certificated in this as well).

Q

What sort of first aid training would I and my staff need for an animal feed store

A

Although the feed store may be small it may come into the high risk category due to the size of the bags of feed and the risk of injury therefore being higher. However, even in the high risk category you only need to appoint someone to be in charge of first aid if you have five or less employees. Over five and you will need someone trained in first aid and again the risk assessment of needs will indicate the the level of training required. However, once you have a need for a first aider you must ensure there is a first aider on site at all times, while the business is open or staff on the premises.

Q

What is the minimum legal training and documentation required for first aid in the workplace?

A

The minimum legal training is that someone is trained to be able to understand the legal requirements of being appointed to oversee the first aid in the

Equestrian Retail Trade Panel Our Ask the Experts feature consults leading business experts on a variety of subjects, but of course by successfully running your own equestrian business, you’re an expert in your own right! As such, you can have your say. Equestrian Business magazine invites you to become a part of our Equestrian Retail Trade panel. This will involve you giving your views on subjects that we cover within the publication and online, plus reviewing products from equestrian manufacturers with a retailer’s hat on, rather than directly as a consumer. This is your chance to have your say, get answers to questions you would really like to ask

manufacturers and to give your valuable feedback on the products you sell. If you would like to get involved please email vanessa@ ebmonthly.co.uk, so you can join the ever-growing panel of retail experts. And don’t worry, it won’t take up lots of time. We will simply email you from time-to-time and your responses should not take up more than ten minutes or so of your time.

For more information contact: +44 (0)1953 850678 or email Vanessa@ebmonthly.co.uk workplace. This may be achieved by a member of staff reading and applying the relevant guidelines as per the Approved Code of Practice, (L74), published by the Health & Safety Executive, or by a member of staff attending a relevant training course. Being an appointed person in charge of first aid means that person must maintain a record of all accidents, including near misses and assess these on a regular basis. Report either directly to the Health & Safety Executive or to the business owner/directors, any injuries than may come under RIDDOR, (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations.) Maintain the first aid kits and know how to call for an ambulance. With regards to documentation, an accident record book must be kept and completed. Accident records should be kept for at least three years, in accordance with normal data protection procedures. A contents list and a guidance card should be kept in each first aid kit. Good practice would be to have a policy with regards to checking and recording first aid equipment and although the HSE does say it is not necessary to write a formal risk assessment it is good practice to keep a record of your risk assessment of needs, for future reference.

Q

What are the most common types of injuries in a retail setting?

A

In a retail setting the most common form of injuries

are slips, trips and falls, plus other manual handling injuries. However depending on your customer base, heart attacks / sudden cardiac arrest is also a high possibility.

Q

What else should be considered by the equestrian industry? A. If you have any members of staff who are anaphylactic you should have a written risk assessment for them and their requirements and care. Obviously in the equestrian sector there is a higher risk of more serious injuries like breaks plus head and back injuries; you need to be sure your staff are capable of dealing with these situations. If you have drivers requiring Drivers CPC, for horseboxes etc., you can sometimes save yourselves some money by combining a Drivers CPC training session with the Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate. You will need to ensure that the training provider you are using is able to deliver this.

What to stock for successful sales....

Jodhpurs, breeches and over trousers Breeches and jodhpurs are both functional and fashionable, keeping riders comfortable both in and out of the saddle. Whether they are for everyday or competition use, the summer collections are full of innovation and style.

Over the years, breeches and jodhpurs have bridged the gap between functionality and fashion, ensuring riders look their best both in and out of the saddle,” says Pam Mildner, sales representative, Zebra Products Ltd. Most riders wear jodhpurs or breeches any time they ride and it is always best for riders to avoid jeans, leggings and jogging bottoms as they have a tendency to rub and also won’t last very long. When it comes to jodhpurs and breeches, the materials they are made from are now more supportive and stretchy, allowing greater comfort in the saddle. Pam says: “Materials have pushed the boundaries in terms of innovation such as Cavallo’s 770 textile, a pioneering fabric that helps regulate body temperature

to avoid overheating, maintaining the rider’s temperature at 37°. “The brand’s S/S ’15 range now features breeches that include Cavagrip advanced technology on the seat, such as the Caja grip breeches. The material ensures riders have the benefit of optimum hold in the saddle, together with excellent freedom and movement. “Cavallo has also changed the inner lining of their breeches and jackets, stepping away from the traditional blue stripes to a more adventurous paisley and floral pattern. The upcoming A/W ’15 collection boasts funkier patterns such as reptile and snakeskin, ideal for the fashion conscious rider.” Bright and bold statement patterns are becoming more of a feature in rider leg wear and

Equiline’s Cecille X-Grip Full Seat Breeches

the brand PK Sportswear also boasts strong designs as Sarah Cumner from Zebra Products Ltd explains: “The company likes to inject a little colour into its clothing range and its line of breeches reflects the fun ethos behind the brand. Companies are definitely experimenting in terms of patterns too, for example PK’s floral Legrand breeches are a firm favourite while the Landeur breeches include lace on the back pockets.” There are still going to be many customers who like the more traditional – and practical – navy and black breeches, so keep a

range of both traditional and modern styles on offer so that you appeal to all. Also remember that competition breeches must adhere to the competition clothing regulations as well as fit with the expectations of the sport – for instance the trend for white breeches with crystal embellishments is fine for show jumping and dressage, but showing riders will prefer canary or cream plain style breeches to go with tweed. Also the showing world is where over trousers will be popular, for adults and children, to keep breeches pristine for the show ring.

The Caja Grip Breeches model the Cavagrip seat and are made of 770 material, a pioneering fabric that helps regulate body temperature to avoid overheating, maintaining the rider’s temperature at 37° . The material ensures riders have the benefits of optimum hold in the saddle, together with excellent freedom and movement. The Cajagrip breeches are not only functional but they’re fashionable and come in a variety of colours, so there is a pair suited to everyone.

If you're not supporting your advertising with PR

Your customers are only seeing half the picture. The right PR activity adds real credibility to your advertising; editorial coverage is seen as more reputable, trustworthy and perceived by your potential customers to be more independent, than advertising. So every time you spend money placing an advert and you don’t support it it with at least a press release, you’re missing a major opportunity to let your potential customers know that crucial little bit more about you and your products. But there’s more to successful PR than just a press release. Successful PR is about doing things at the right time, to the right people, using the right media, for the right reasons.

So, if your PR doesn’t do all that, time after time, then you need to talk to PressPoint.

ken lyndon-dykes

The Little Black Book of crooks!

Ken recounts a cautionary tale about sniffing out unsavoury characters. In big business (in multinational terms), the saddlery industry is a cottage industry. That is not to underrate the many talented designers and craftsman saddle-makers. Nor fail to pay tribute to the fact that the UK almost undoubtedly has the best saddle fitting services in the world. Nor to overlook the fact that the industry has access to high quality leathers and accessories. Eulogising aside, I return to my original point: the saddlery industry is small and sole traders and SMEs predominate. Apologies for this long-winded entry to the subject I would like to debate: the fact that, despite being small and ‘all buddies together’, we do occasionally get caught out. I will give you a remarkable instance – by agreement, no names revealed! A friend of mine who is both a saddle-maker and a saddle fitter told me a wonderful story – it would have been a laugh but it cost him money – not good for a business that is almost one-man. As you might visualise, he doesn’t carry stock – his saddles are either bespoke or snapped up by a saddle-maker as soon as they are completed. Thus it is rare for him to accept orders for several saddles to the same design. On this occasion he did – and fell foul! The client, who described himself as a trainer and instructor and a saddle fitter but was not the holder of any recognisable qualifications, provided the saddler with a list of measurements relating to horses belonging to clients in Scotland. The saddler, himself a man of honour and integrity, didn’t undertake any research – he took the situation at face value. All seemed fine. All five saddles were made and despatched in accordance with the purchaser’s instructions and he received

confirmation that they had arrived safely. A perfect transaction, everyone satisfied. Until – until! Five days after the saddles had been despatched the saddler received a document stating that the buyer was unhappy and was cancelling the contract. A relevant cancellation form was provided. Wait: we are only halfway through the story! The ‘trainer’ – purchaser – had told my friend that he would personally organise delivery of the saddles to the clients in the Scotland. The saddler had no previous experience to guide him concerning cancelled orders, as he had never had cause to deal

West Country and back. They had been used by a group of riders taking part in a quadrilletype event. The riders had absolutely no idea that ‘their trainer’ had placed an order for the saddles. As far as they were concerned, they were a generous loan – a form of sponsorship. The fact that their saddles all matched no doubt enhanced their performance! The story unravelled further when it became apparent that this was not the first occasion that ‘the trainer’ had carried out similar dupes! Hence my reference to the smallness of the industry – the sad tale had unwound chapter

“It seems to me that we need a Black Book where in the names of devious characters are entered” with one. He decided to cut his losses and returned the money involved (a not inconsiderable sum). Then – he examined the returned saddles and it was obvious that every one of them had been used. Absolutely by chance he discovered, via a series of coincidences, that the saddles had been down to the

by chapter – from the West Midlands down to the West Country and back again via friends and acquaintances! It seems to me that we need a Black Book wherein the names of devious characters (crooks) are entered. Bona fide manufacturers and retailers could ask for checks when they are doubtful about a client

KEN LYNDON-DYKES ❚ Ex-international level three-day-event rider. ❚ Qualified Society of Master Saddlers’ saddle fitter and a member of the society’s executive committee, ❚ Owns and runs SaddleWorld, one of the largest saddle retailers in the UK. Ken is increasingly in demand as a professional witness and adjudicator in reation to saddlery-related claims and disputes. ❚ He is also well-known as an inspirational and interesting lecturer/speaker. or supplier. Inclusions in the Black Book would have to be handled very carefully – of course. In the real world, unless court judgements or similar were involved, maintaining the Black Book would doubtless contravene any number of regulations. In the absence of the Black Book, we shall have to continue to rely on wordof-mouth to warn about the occasional rogue. Was the purchaser convincing or was it that the saddlemaker was naïve and trusting? Probably both! The good news is that the saddle-maker re-sold the saddles immediately – to one of his regular clients who was delighted to take them off his hands – slightly discounted to allow for the fact that they had been used. After all, they were still examples of the highest quality craftsmanship. There are crooks in every walk of life – they use ingenuity and knowledge to set up a whole range of dishonest situations. They are often talented individuals prepared to put time and effort into perfecting their crimes, yet not prepared to devote their energies to earning an honest living!

interview

5 minutes with...

Bridget Jennings from JB Promotions Sports PR & Event Management Introduce your company please and describe your role within it: My company is a promotions, sports PR and event management company. The business was founded over 30 years ago after starting my career at a London advertising agency. Since then we have managed a wide variety of campaigns for clients ranging from Cancer Bacup a charity dedicated to providing high quality information on all types of cancer, Children with Leukaemia now CLIC and the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, to top class sporting events such as the Festival of British Eventing, Tour De France Grand Depart, HSBC FEI Classic Series to name a few. My passion for sport was instrumental in successfully raising the funds to allow British teams to compete in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. I also joined the British support team looking after and representing sponsors in Korea and, four years later, at the Barcelona Games.  Our creative and experienced team can handle every aspect of putting together a successful PR campaign or event. From coming up with the ideas to managing fundraising, and sponsorship, as well as securing media coverage, right through to setting up and running events on the day. It’s all about excellent contacts, good organisation and attention to detail as well as a friendly service delivered with a dash of flair and originality. We are proud to work with some of the most prestigious names in the

equestrian and sporting world, as well as charities and blue chip companies. But we also enjoy working with smaller local businesses from our base in Somerset and devote the same energy and enthusiasm to a project, no matter how big or small. At the moment we are immersed in the throes of implementing a complex PR and communications plan for the Longines FEI European Eventing Championships 2015 at Blair Castle, Scotland in September. At the event we will also be running the Media Office with all that dealing with media from all over the world entails. In the run up to the Championships we manage the social media, features, media liaison and social media activity which is great fun – we can’t wait for September. Meanwhile we have to look after our other clients which keeps us all very busy dealing with sponsored riders, trade conferences, organising photo shoots and features, placing promotions, planning campaigns and always looking at new business opportunities. There is never a dull moment in the office and we all pull together to make sure everything gets done.

How has the equestrian industry changed over your career? The industry is more complex with many new and exciting challenges which ensures we all keep up to date with technology and developments.

Bridget Jenning s It is an ever changing industry and has become much more business focused enabling us all to grow and build the market sector. The success of the Olympic Games also added a new legacy for business growth.

What equestrian or business innovations have caught your eye recently and why? I think the massive growth in the digital apps market especially those specific to sport and associated themes such as fitness have caught my eye. Also within the equestrian market, the air jacket is a great innovation for safety which is such an important aspect.

What are your top tips for business growth? Keep in touch with people and ensure you produce good, effective results which catch the eye. Always look to the next idea, and look after your clients.

Where do you see your business in ten years time? Bigger and stronger with a dynamic, young team to guide me!
