Survey indicates buoyant equestrian market

T

he British Equestrian Trade Association’s National Equestrian Survey 2015 has revealed new spending patterns and changing trends over the past five years. This specially commissioned poll was carried out by sports marketing agency Two Circles with support from the British Equestrian Federation and partial funding from Sport England. It is the fifth one to be conducted over the past 20 years and designed to provide a clear and accurate picture of the British equestrian landscape. “I think that this is the best report we have produced to date,” says BETA executive director Claire Williams. “The results for 2015 have been eagerly anticipated, just as they were in 2011, and it shows that the world today has become a different place. “A marked increase in equestrian spending gives us much to be pleased about. However, the report reveals a decline in the number of riders and highlights the need for our sector to retain them and acquire new riders. “Fortunately, this is not a trend seen in horse ownership, as figures remain remarkably static. This is extremely good news for equestrian businesses because they can continue to support a sizeable and lucrative market.” All BETA members are able to claim a free overview report, which can be bought by nonmembers for £100 plus VAT. The Structural Report will soon be made available and can be purchased at a price of £200 plus VAT for BETA members or £380 plus VAT for non-members. Key findings include: ❚ The economic value of the equestrian sector stands at £4.3 billion of consumer spending across a wide range of goods and services each year. This has

Riding for pleasure is still the most popular equestrian activity

increased from £3.8 billion in 2011. ❚ Riding for pleasure, at 96%, was the most popular equestrian activity, with 59% of riders taking part in non-affiliated competitions. ❚ The overall number of those who ride has fallen, from 3.5 million in 2011 to 2.7 million in 2015. ❚ There has been a decline in regular riders, from 1.6 million in 2011 to 1.3 million in 2015. ❚ However, there has been significant growth in the number of riders aged between 16 and 24, rising from 368,000 in 2011 to 403,000 in 2015. ❚ There remains a strong gender bias, with females representing 74% of the riding population. In 2015, there are an estimated 962,000 female regular riders compared with 348,000 males. ❚ While 18% of ex-riders said that cost was the reason they gave up, lost access to a horse was also noted as a prominent factor. ❚ Of the ex-riders, 34% said they would be interested in returning to horse riding in the future. ❚ An estimated 3 million people have taken a riding holiday in the past 12 months. Older riders, of 55 and over, are more likely to do this. ❚ There are an estimated 446,000 horse-owning households in the

country. This figure is strikingly similar to that of 2011, when there were 451,000. ❚ The number of horses in Britain has fallen from 988,000 in 2011 to 944,000 in 2015. This figure includes those owned privately but kept by others or owned by private establishments. ❚ There are 19 million equestrian consumers in Britain with a range of associated interests. This figure has remained fairly constant over the past 20 years ❚ In 2015, indirect spending on equestrian items such as hats and body protectors, clothing, books and magazines stands at £560 million compared with £557 million in 2011. ❚ In 2011, 60% of people expected to cut back on non-essential products, but this figure has dropped significantly, with only 38% planning to do so. ❚ Buying equestrian goods in both bricks-and-mortar stores and online has continued to grow. In 2011, 83% of people bought from a retail store and, four years later, 97% do so. In 2011 49% of people ordered equestrian goods from the Internet and this figure has now grown to 64%. ❚ In 2015, an estimated £3,600 is spent on each horse, compared with £2,650 in 2011.

Milestone anniversaries I

t seems that 2015 is a significant year for some equestrian companies, with major milestones being met and celebrations to be had. This year, the Denis Brinicombe Group celebrates ten years since the launch of its equestrian division, Brinicombe Equine. Group managing director Keith Greig says: “We originally started

our equestrian division with the aim of supplying unique, high quality products to horse owners in Britain. Now ten years on, and with our products in high demand across the globe, it is clear that our range has stood the test of time and that our formulations have done exactly as we intended – to support the health and performance of horses, and meet the needs and expectations of their owners. Brinicombe Equine has become a brand trusted by horse owners and professionals from across the globe, and we are looking forward to endorsing this for the years to come.” Hilton Herbs is also celebrating 25 years in business this month. Another to celebrate 25 years is Essex-based family firm The Animal Health Company, whilst renowned British tool manufacturer Fyna-Lite is celebrating 30 years of business this year.

New role for Richard Brown R

ichard Brown of Abbey England has been appointed as Committee President at the Leather & Hide Trades Benevolent Institution (LHTBI). Founded in 1860, the Institution provides financial assistance for persons who are or have been engaged in the leather industry, who are aged or incapacitated from earning a livelihood, and the bereaved spouse, adult

dependents and orphans of any such person. Richard says: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to help the trade in whatever way I can and I look forward to working with the rest of the committee. I will work with my staff and customers to help support and promote this worthwhile cause.” Anyone wishing to find out more about the LHTBI can visit www. lhtbi.org.uk.

Another award for TopSpec

A

t a star-studded event in Harrogate, TopSpec won the Best Rural Business category at the Harrogate Advertiser Business Awards. The 10th anniversary celebration of the awards was held at the Majestic Hotel and brought together leading businesses throughout the Yorkshire region. Pickhill-based TopSpec held off stiff competition to secure the prestigious prize, much to the delight of everyone in this forward thinking team. Said Katy Mickle of TopSpec: “We are delighted to win the Best Rural Business award and would like to thank all the team at TopSpec for all their hard work and commitment over the years.

Equestrian June 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

“We try very much to work with the local community and alongside regional suppliers while also employing people based in the area to work at head office. “We would also like to thank all those who contribute to the success of TopSpec, including customers who spread the word about the effectiveness of our products.” In choosing a winner, the judges were looking for a business that makes a positive contribution to the rural community and economy. They were seeking a company that had remained resilient through the recession and has strong marketing skills behind them to progress successfully in the future.

Obituary Garland Toney Sr, a pioneer in the English equestrian industry, died on April 12 in the USA. Garland retired from the industry five years ago after giving 58 years of his life to the business. As resident of Richmond, Virginia he worked for companies like Crump Co. for 18 years then Richmond Harness Co. and then later moved to Shelbyville Tennessee, where he became President of Blue Ribbon Saddlery, an English based company. After years of being away from his family in Richmond, VA., Garland decided it was time to head home where he started his own ‘rep. business’ called Saddlery Trade Associates. He represented companies like Courbette Saddlery, Devon Aire Inc., Tailored Sportsman and Shires of England to name a few. Garland was liked and loved by many and was always known as a Southern Gentleman. He died peacefully at 84.

Career insights

Opportunities

Allen & Page nutritionist Sarah Parkinson MSc provides an insight into her career.

In the hot seat…

Q A

What does your job entail?

CareerI have insights a BSc (Hons) in

As an animal and equine nutritionist my day to day activities can vary. The main part of this role is to answer our customer’s questions or queries and assist them in providing the most suitable feed to their animals. These questions come through via email or from our nutritional helpline. Other areas of my role include writing letters to clients who have received a yard call from their local area manager as well as writing magazine articles and presentations. Within our department we each have different roles, I carry out the testing of our feeds and analyse the results received from the laboratories we use. I also ensure we are up to date on legislation that we as a feed company must follow.

Q

What qualifications do you have?

On the move…

John Davies

A

Bioveterinary Science from the University of Lincoln and an MSc in Animal Science from Aberystwyth University.

Q A

What route did you take to this career?

I always wanted to work with animals, but I was unsure what area of the industry I wanted to work in. When studying for my BSc (Hons) I was bitten by the nutrition ‘bug’. I loved looking into how the diet could help with issues and diseases within the animal. After this I knew I wanted a career within the nutrition industry but my depth of knowledge wasn’t enough from this degree so I undertook a postgraduate MSc at Aberystwyth University. Here I advanced my understanding in both equine and livestock nutrition along with gaining further experience in caring for poultry as part of my dissertation. In my spare time I helped out at my local riding school and worked

towards gaining some of my BHS qualifications.

Q A

What is the best part of your job?

My favourite part is hearing back from our customers that the recommendations and time spent helping them has been successful and beneficial for their horse. I also enjoy the testing and sampling part of my role as this part is very interesting to me.

Q A

If you could do any other job in the world, what would you do? I think if I hadn’t become an equine nutritionist I would have gained further BHS qualifications to become a riding instructor as I really enjoy helping further young riders knowledge and riding skills.

Chillout Horsewear Recently launched and growing in popularity day by day, this smart new equestrian fashion brand offers stylish stand out products for horse and rider.

C

hillout Horsewear Ltd is the brainchild of Lauren Hall, who comes from a farming background but has always had a passion for fashion. The brand was launched via social media where it is strongly represented and currently enjoys over 26,000 followers, which is increasing daily. The signature fleece rug was the first item launched. It is designed to keep the ‘chill out’ on competition day, with removable surcingle straps, super soft fleece and a higher cut neckline. The rug is the perfect accessory for show days and also gave Lauren the name for her company, which is quickly becoming a well-recognised logo within the equestrian world. The Chillout crest subtly contains the Union Jack theme and gives a fabulously British feel to the brand. Sourcing manufacturers from all over the world to satisfy Lauren’s attention to detail and quality expectation was a difficult task, but the brand has been designed to be affordable yet stylish and of high quality. As demand has risen, Lauren has taken on a sales manager to assist in the retailer enquiries: Sharon has seven years experience in the

equestrian distribution industry and has proved a great asset to the team. Lauren explains more about the evolution of the brand: “We made the decision to quickly expand into the world of apparel after witnessing how the equestrian world was accepting more fashion forward and modern looks both in the everyday and competition world of the rider. “You will find that most of our clothing ranges colour coordinate beautifully with our horse wear collections which is a lovely feature we at Chillout offer our customers. We pride ourselves on providing the customers with complete looks in both competition clothing and casual clothing. “Chillout clothing started with a range of polo shirts, which are a must for all types of rider. With these polo shirts we decided to feature our statement collars which add a unique look when ‘popping your collar’; this look has remained throughout the expanding Chillout polo shirt range and provides a fun and fashionable style that has been a firm favourite with our customers.

Our casual collection features stylish military jackets which have been hugely popular not only in the UK but in New Zealand and Australia too. We also feature in our collection reversible gilets, casual breeches and a range of accessories to complete to the look. Chillout also has a range of clothing for children, including breeches, show shirts and gilets for ages 3-11 and we even have something for the men, with a range of show shirts and casual tops. “Our Competition collection provides a full competition wardrobe for the rider: the Chillout show jackets are affordable, water proof and compatible with both show jumping and dressage dress codes; the Sophia show shirts have a beautifully sculpted American collar and match perfectly with the crystal buttons that are also featured on the show jackets; and finally a range of breeches where we have catered to all needs, producing styles with knee patches, full suede

seats and full sticky seats to fulfil any preferred look. We also are adding a range of fawn ‘sticky bum’ breeches to our collection to fill the needs of the showing customers and the hunters.” Lauren concludes: “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from our retailers and we focus our marketing to promote our retailers the best way we can. We feel as a brand it is important to support our retailers, particularly as we expand as a brand over the coming years.”

the

Best of British The equestrian trade is well-supported with UK manufacturing, with saddlery, feed, supplements and much more designed and made in Britain. The craftsmanship, innovation and customer service of these brands is crucial to their success and branding ‘made in Britain’ is a positive way to get products into the emerging markets around the world.

A

s the following pages of ‘Best of British’ companies show, the diverse offering of home manufacturing is impressive, with many companies choosing to produce within the British Isles. The resulting products show the wealth of traditional skills, cutting edge innovations and varied products utilising the skills of the British workforce. The ‘Made in Britain’ brand is clearly still strong and Claire Williams, BETA executive director says: “Britain is renowned for its innovation and design which keeps the Made in Britain tag still so valid today.” It’s not just British manufacturing that stands out though, as Claire points out the importance of “design that stands strong due to the heritage and history in the industry – we still have particularly strong manufacturing bases in the areas of feed, supplements, bedding, saddlery and horse products.” Manufacturing and sales is of course important, and as the British Equestrian Trade Association’s National Equestrian Survey 2015 survey

16 Equestrian 16 Equestrian June June2015 2015 Business ww.ebmonthly.co.uk Business w www.ebmonthly.co.uk

shows, there has been a marked increase in equestrian spending as the recession lifts. However, export is also an important factor, with the British brand associated with quality, tradition and workmanship – real selling points for the market overseas. “The interest in export is growing stronger every year,” says Claire. “It makes good business sense to spread your markets widely especially in times of economic challenge. This means that when one country demand drops another export market can pick up the slack. Export interest has also increased partly due to BETA bringing companies’ attention to it more as an option, but also because British products are increasingly competitive (due to currency fluctuation) as well as being innovative, well designed and high quality.” In areas in the world such as Dubai, with the Al Fares trade fair every other year, a multi million dollar racing business and huge investment in equestrian sport infrastructure, quality British products are considered highly. Recent research by the Centre for Economics and Business

Research confirmed that overseas consumers will pay a premium for British branded goods. And it is the ‘Made in Britain’ brand that is important. The report shows that “products labelled ‘Made in Britain’ command a considerably higher premium when sold abroad than those with no declared country of origin. When consumers in eight key export markets see the Union Flag on a product, their inclination to buy increases. This is especially true in new and emerging markets where two thirds of consumers (64%) would be more inclined to purchase a product carrying the Union Flag.” The report sought to understand the value of the British brand, when compared with ‘made in England/made in Wales’ etc branding, which is not as strong. The research examined product categories including food, drink, fashion, precision tools and automotives, which although not directly equestrian encompasses some of the technical and fashion-type products within the sector. It showed that “31% of customers in new and emerging markets have knowingly paid a premium

for products from Great Britain. The same figure for developed economies is just 14%.” Rebecca McNeil, Head of Business Lending at Barclays Corporate Banking, who commissioned the report commented: “While British businesses are currently reliant on the EU and the USA for the majority of their exports, they are well placed to expand into new and emerging markets. The report shows that the biggest premiums for British branded goods will be paid in these markets, not the developed markets. These new and emerging markets are also growing at a faster rate than the established trading partners, meaning growth opportunities and premium pricing are aligned. “We understand that these new markets can be more challenging to enter but for those that persevere, there are opportunities for a greater return. Rather than focusing on seemingly saturated developed markets, exporters should seriously consider looking further afield as there are bigger premiums to be had when products are marketed as Made in Britain.”

Jenkinson & Sons has been supplying the equestrian trade since 1835 and quality products have always been a priority. This is shown in its range of Elico bridlework which is made in England using the best British bridle butts and their bridle leather is always at least 3.75mm thick for maximum strength and durability. The edges are rounded and sealed to protect the fibres from sweat, and ensures comfort for the horse. Stress points on the Elico bridles are always double hand-stitched with hand-waxed thread and at least nine stitches to the inch on the stud linings for safety. The belief the company has in its leatherwork has been emphasised in the last year with new packaging showing the commitment to the same level of quality products as has always been the case in the company’s 180-year history and which will continue.

quiplus was founded by Kay Russell to produce unique products for the equine market. The first product was a reusable cooling bandage that gives instant cooling compression and support. These were followed by the Rapid Cooling Rug which is used to cool horses after work. The next new line to be launched this summer is the Ice Socks and these will be perfect for use during work under boots or for minor knocks and bruising. All the products are made in Yorkshire and the office is in Dorset. The cooling bandages have been featured on Dragons Den, at the Epsom Derby and in the Daily Mail and are now sold all over the world. The products all work by using rapid evaporation to cool and this has been clinically proven to be 50% better than traditional cryotherapy for pain relief and recovery.

hoof & leg care comes to hoof supplements and Nettex’s Everyday Hoof Health contains this useful ingredient. The company explains: “Biotin plays an essential part in healthy hoof growth and is necessary to achieve consistent improvement. Zinc and manganese are two minerals that support the formation of keratin and collagen that are vital for sustaining healthy skin, hair, cartilage, bone and hooves. Zinc is vital for correct horn growth. Some equine diets can be deficient in zinc. Biotin aids the formation and strength of the protein keratin, which makes up most of the hoof wall, helping to keep hooves strong and healthy and more able to cope with the demands of exercise.”

All year round

Summer brings with it dried out hooves and the impact of hard ground on joints and tendons. As well as a hoof supplement, consider promoting joint supplements too as these will see an increase in demand through the competition season. In fact, many horse owners completely change their supplementation to suit the season and their horse’s regime, but Gillian warns that this may be less effective: “Many people will wait until a problem arises with their horse’s hooves which can be too late – prevention is always better than cure. Problems may arise in the summer months when ground is hard and dry and hooves become lacking in moisture, or at the other end of the spectrum

oof and leg care is a solid sector when it comes to stock, but it encompasses far more than you would perhaps consider at first glance. It is far more than just hoof oil, and includes items such as therapy boots, medicine boots and, crucially, supplements. Gillian Wardle, Horslyx brand manager, says: “Many people now realise that a diet lacking in the correct balance of nutrients can lead to poor and slow horn growth, leading to problems such as cracking hooves and even contribute towards laminitis.” For

40 Equestrian June 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

some a simple balanced diet is not enough, and an extra supplement that provides a boost of nutrients specifically aimed at horn growth can help. “In the past biotin was the ingredient everyone made a beeline for,” explains Gillian. “However, providing a complete balanced diet with the correct combination of ingredients is even more important. Customers should look for a product combining biotin, methionine and chelated zinc (for improved absorption), these are all essential nutrients to help optimise horn quality and growth, along with

the other nutrients necessary to balance their equine’s diet. “Exterior applications should be an invaluable part of a hoof care regime, however to improve the hoof growth you must work from the inside out by providing the correct balance of vitamins, minerals and trace elements all year round to support healthy hooves.” Finding the correct product to suit each horse can seem a major task, and this is where product training from the manufacturers can be invaluable for shop staff. Biotin is the key ingredient when it

in winter when horses can be standing in mud and their hooves become weak and can suffer from problems such as abscesses, or standing on dry bedding 24 hours a day which can again dry out hooves. Nutrients can take several months to make a difference, so a balanced diet all year round is the most important thing, along with the support of a qualified farrier and the use of good quality applications where necessary. With the appropriate product training this is the ideal opportunity to cross sell a suitable feed or supplement alongside the external applications providing a complete solution for the customer and boosting sales for the retailer.”

Keep it simple Customers are always short on time and require products that are simple to use as well as effective. Supplements work well as they are simply added to feed, although palatability is key. But some applications can be messy or difficult to use. Equally, some cooling or therapy products can be messy too. Rachael Holdsworth, Absorbine European key account marketing coordinator for WF Young, (Absorbine) agrees that customers favour effective hoof and leg care products that are easy to use: “Horse owners

want products that are effective and straightforward to use. Absorbine’s Magic Cushion hoof packing is very effective and importantly, easy to use. On a shod horse, the packing is simply put into the hoof, covered with shavings and that is it! Customers are delighted when they realise that there is no need for fiddling about with tape and bandages to keep Magic Cushion in place.” Cooling legs after exercise and competition is still important and

them is as easy as removing the bandages, offering horse owners a quick and clean alternative to traditional clay.” Rachael adds: “When retailers are thinking about the range of hoof and leg care products they wish to stock, I would suggest quality over quantity. It is also important for stockists to have seasonal products in store.” Another easy cooling option is Robinson Animal Healthcare’s Koolpak. This useful product is

“Exterior applications should be an invaluable part of a hoof care regime” many favour clay based products, but this can be messy. Offering a range of simple to use cooling boots is always a good idea. These can keep their cool for a long time, are easy to travel with in the horse box and just require popping on after exercise, which is far easier than smearing clay around and then removing it. Rachael continues: “We are very excited about the new Bigeloil Leg Wraps and Hoof Pads, which we will be launching in the UK in the next month. The wraps contain kaolin clay and Epsom salts encased in quilted pockets and can be dipped in a bucket of warm or cold water and then wrapped around the legs or hoof and bandaged in place. Removing

ideal for emergency and routine use as it requires no refrigeration. It is suitable for providing fast, effective treatment for tendon injuries, inflammation, knocks, strains, bruises and swellings. To facilitate a sale it is important to understand the correct use of cold therapy, and the effects it can have. Robinson Animal Healthcare says: “Cold therapy is commonly used in the treatment of inflammation and soft tissue injuries. A popular choice of treatment, cold therapy is a natural, drug-free way to help treat injuries and reduce pain. It lowers the temperature at the site of injury through heat exchange and constricts local blood vessels. This reduces cell damage and

fluid build-up. Cold therapy is ideally used immediately after an injury occurs and then subsequently for the next 48 hours at regular intervals. Due to the frequent nature of its use, cold therapy involving water may lead to cracked heels or other skin problems. Dry application minimizes the risk of such dermatological issues.”

Added extras When considering which products to stock, there are lots of other options. Products such as glittery or coloured hoof oil are becoming more popular, and Equidivine does a good range of colours that is easy to apply and stays on well. At the other end of the scale there are plenty of traditional hoof applications such as Carr & Day & Martin’s Cornucrescine Hoof Ointment which has certainly stood the test of time. This traditional hoof dressing has been used for generations and promotes healthy hoof growth. This product is now part of a three-step system which also includes a hoof supplement and a range of daily hoof products. The beauty of a range marketed as a ‘Three-Step System’ like this is that the customer can easily see what each product does and how it fits into their horse’s regime and needs.

Changing fashions for tack & equipment Whether leather or synthetic, tack is important for every horse owner and as with clothing, famous riders influence what is popular, so retail and trade talk tack. Fashion and trends Just like with many other equestrian products, tack tastes fluctuate with the latest trends and often inspiration comes from the high profile competitors who are seen in the press regularly. Retailer Carrie Scobbie from Tilly Tack Shop in Clackmannanshire has noticed that, “The dressage type bridles with the white piping seem to be quite popular at the moment and I think Charlotte

44 Equestrian June 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

DuJardin may have an influence on a lot of equestrians! The trends seem to follow the equestrian celebrities at the time, and she is doing so much for dressage at the moment, people seem to look up to her.” This is certainly the case and although white piping is traditionally more of a dressage style, it doesn’t mean that leisure riders don’t also strive for the same look. Offering the most popular looks at varying price

points will help riders follow the trends, whatever their budgets. Some riders set the trends with bespoke tack that is then ‘copied’ so it becomes available to all. Julia Andrews, managing director of Kate Negus Saddlery says: “After Kitty King was seen using an elasticated grackle noseband on her top horse, we got asked if we do one. So working with Kitty, we did! As all our bridlework is made in the UK, we can make short

runs of products and get them to the customer quickly.” Shops with on site saddlers can also offer bespoke items and although this is more labour intensive, the demand for bespoke pieces is rising, as is the demand for more high-end bespoke bridles: “We have seen an increase of people going for our top end padded headpiece – the Grand Prix Headpiece,” says Julia. “Customers are wanting the best

safe in the saddle “I do think that synthetic saddles seem to be more popular than ever!” for their horse’s comfort. This was before the recent article on the impact of the bridle on the horse.” As more people become aware of the impact of bridle fit and pressure on the horse’s head, custom fits are increasing in popularity. At the same time, more alternative bridles such as the Micklem are enjoying a surge in popularity and can now be seen on horses in all sorts of competitions.

Bits

There are more and more bits now coming on the market that it is awash with them and can be difficult to decide what to stock. Carrie says: “I do think that there are too many different bits, it’s a minefield bitting a horse as there is too much choice and many are actually very similar. I try to keep a broad selection of the most popular bits in store, however I do get orders for others quite often. I keep a book with as many of the different bits as I can to show people and often have at least one in stock to show them.” Julia provides some good advice: “Bit companies in particular offer a huge range of products, so my advice would be to ask which are the most popular and stock them. Working on the 80:20 theory…20% of the stock will take 80% of the money. With Kate Negus range, we always advise our trade customers to take just our most popular items to start with and then see what the customers ask for.”

Customers are wanting the best for their horse’s comfort”

Saddles

Saddles tend to be split down the middle between leisure riders who favour synthetic saddles and competitors who favour leather. This is of course a wide generalisation, but there’s no getting away from the fact that synthetic saddles are now hugely popular, particularly as they often look very leather-like, are light weight, easy to care for, cheaper and often allow for an adjustable fit. Carrie says: “I do think that synthetic saddles seem to be more popular than ever! I think the flexibility of them is important and the fact that they are lightweight. They are definitely the first choice for most happy hackers, riding clubbers and endurance riders but leather is still more popular with competition riders.” At the top end of the scale are the bespoke leather saddles that not only provide a customised fit for the rider, but are now starting to offer bespoke colours and embellishments.

Tack care

When selling any leather tack or equipment it is worth encouraging the purchase of good quality cleaning and leather care products, as they will help to prolong the life of tack. Laura Rossell from Carr, Day and Martin advises: “Leather care items are great to demo in store, as most people that come into tack shops are likely to be wearing some kind of leather boot, which you can then demo on and get instant visible results. Keeping a saddle or bridle that you have recently cleaned and conditioned, or even some ‘before and after’ pictures, is a great way to show customers how well products work.”

Bespoke and British are both important when it comes to tack

46 Equestrian June 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

The bespoke colours and piping on this Sue Carson Zeus jump saddle are part of a growing trend for riders to add their own style to their tack

What is the best way to care for leather tack? Laura Rossell from Carr, Day and Martin says: “It is essential to first clean leather before applying a conditioner. Cleaning ensures that the surface is free from dirt and grease and enables the leather to ‘accept’ the conditioner. Think of it like caring for your hair, you would always shampoo your hair first before conditioning and caring for leather is no different. Regular cleaning and conditioning will preserve the leather and protect your investment for years to come. We also recommend incorporating into any leather care routine an additional treatment with

an intensive conditioner, as and when necessary. This will intensely nourish the fibres and keep the leather soft, supple and in the best possible condition.” Does it matter what type of sponge or cloth is used? “We always recommend a high density, hard wearing sponge for best results. The sponge spreads the product evenly and leaves no marks, fibres or hairs on the leather. The better quality the sponge, the less often you have to replace it and the less product you end up with on your hands or the floor!” Applying conditioner

What to stock for successful sales.... Back on Track

Back on Track Saddle Pad The Back on Track range of high performance clothing and horse wear offers comfort and style for both horse and rider. Developed in Sweden, Back on Track products are widely used by top riders and producers throughout Europe. All Back on Track products are made from advanced Welltex fabric which is infused with ceramic particles. These ceramic particles cause long wave infra-red heat to radiate back towards the body. The body responds positively to the infra-red wave, increasing circulation, which can relieve joint tension, maximise performance and help avoid injury.

saddle pads, numnahs and girths Saddle pads this season range from classic competition designs to fun and colourful off duty pads, whilst girths are increasingly technical.

G

irths are now designed to encourage airflow and allow the horse to move freely, preventing them becoming rubbed and sweaty. There are a wide variety available to suit all budgets and HyEquestrian’s Waffle Stud Girth stands out as a technical girth at a very reasonable price, particularly as it provides the coverage of a stud girth. The PDS Relief Dressage Girth is fairly new to the market and was created in conjunction with Carl Hester, to go with the PDS range of saddles. The girth is narrow around the elbow but broad on the sternum to distribute weight evenly. Encouraging customers to purchase a good quality girth with a new saddle is an excellent way to increase sales, and a saddle pad is a good option too. When it comes to saddle pads

there are two options – those that help the saddle to fit and stay put, such as the Ideal Grip Pad; or those that act solely to protect the saddle from wear and tear, also perhaps wicking sweat away from the horse. Styles are hugely varied, with plain black, brown and white crucial for competition, but apart from that, the imagination is the only limit, with different bindings, materials and colours creating a myriad of looks. Match up numnahs with other similar items on display to create a put together look for customers to emulate. You could also promote a personalisation service as the trend for names and sponsors on numnahs, saddle pads and rugs is still growing.

business advice

Ask the expert This month’s business experts answer key questions on secure card payments plus the ins and outs of retail finance. To ask your questions simply email editorial@ebmonthly.co.uk and we’ll find a trade or business expert to help.

Who is the expert?

Q

What is the most secure way to handle payments in my tack shop?

A

Lyndsay Harben Sales and marketing director at Markadis Ltd Founded in 2014, Markadis Ltd is a merchant card payment provider that offers face-to-face, on the road, pay by phone and ecommerce card acceptance solutions for merchants across the UK. Lyndsay has spent most of her career in the payments industry, consisting of more than ten years’ experience in merchant acquiring, prepaid card issuing, regulation of cards businesses and portfolio management. Lynday answers:

The most secure way is to accept card payments. It reduces the risk of incorrectly counting received cash or giving the wrong change and with the increasing number of forged coins in circulation it reduces the hassle of exchanging these at your bank for valid currency. Additionally most banks will charge to process cheques and for cash deposits, thereby reducing your income, so it is in your interests financially. Of course there are some risks with card payments, but if you provide valid goods and services in good faith you’ll get paid promptly in the most secure way possible by direct transfer to your bank account.

Q

My saddlers go out on the road – is there a way for them to take card payments while visiting clients?

A

Yes there is. There are secure card payment terminals that can be used in the field. They rely on the same mobile phone networks that support mobile phones but do

not need the same strength of signal that your mobile phone requires nor are they tied to a single network. Although there is not universal coverage and I am sure that there are places where no signal is available, it is worth checking to see if your area has reasonable coverage to see if this would work for you. You can do this by seeing if you have a mobile phone signal at the majority of your customers’ locations. If you do, you can have a card payment machine travel with your saddlers and they can take card payments wherever they are working ‘on the road’. You can also use a card payment machine to accept a telephone order so that once the work is completed the customer’s card details can be phoned in to your office and the payment provided that way although this will be a little more expensive to process.

fairly poor – would this affect my payment processes?

A

Thankfully card payment machines can use traditional telephone connections so there’s no need for an internet connection to accept card payments. However up-to-date payment service providers use web-based services to provide you with information on your account and to alert you to changes. You may find that access to these account management services is not convenient via a poor connection and should ensure that they have a good customer support service in place with the option for paper-based account statements.

Q

What is contactless payment and do I need it for my shop?

A

Contactless payment is designed to make small value transactions easier for shops that have a high footfall or peaks of demand where large numbers of payments must be taken in a short time. When a contactless transaction is made the customer taps their card on the card payment machine and the payment transaction is completed without the need for a PIN to be entered. There is a cap on the value of the transaction which is currently £20 rising to £30 later in the year. If your shop needs that sort of payment service, then make sure your service provider supports this. However it is worth noting that in the near future all payment machines will have this capability and most cards and many mobile phones will be able to make contactless payments too. You should not be paying any extra for this facility and in some cases the cost of servicing very low value transactions will make it worth your while encouraging your customers to use contactless payment. A good payment service provider will advise you on the monetary benefits of contactless cards to help you make the decision about how and when to encourage your customers to use them.

Q

Due to my rural location, my internet connection is

Q A

Who else could use mobile payment services?

Of course mobile payment services are not just for tack shops or saddlers on the road, they can be used for feed merchants, blacksmiths, vets, horse physiotherapists, transport companies and just about anyone who needs to process a payment quickly and conveniently – both for the seller and the buyer! If you want to find out more about the right card payment terminal for your business then one of our team at Markadis is happy to discuss this and provide you with a free no obligation quote.

Equestrian Retail Trade Panel Our Ask the Experts feature consults leading business experts on a variety of subjects, but of course by successfully running your own equestrian business, you’re an expert in your own right! As such, you can have your say.

Who is the expert?

George Miller Sales director of Omni Capital Retail Finance Omni Capital Retail Finance (OCRF) is an independent retail finance company. We are privately funded and, unlike the high street banks, can offer competitive finance on flexible and highly attractive terms. Retail finance enables businesses to offer their customers the ability to pay for goods and services in monthly instalments. Q A

Equestrian Business magazine invites you to become a part of our Equestrian Retail Trade panel. This will involve you giving your views on subjects that we cover within the publication and online, plus reviewing products from equestrian manufacturers with a retailer’s hat on, rather than directly as a consumer. This is your chance to have your say, get answers to questions you would really like to ask

What do you offer retailers and why is it of benefit?

Retail Finance is of particular benefit to sports and leisure retailers, where the cost of purchases are often expensive. Benefits include: ❚ Allowing customers to purchase products immediately rather than save-up for them. ❚ Enabling customers to trade up to better quality or more desirable products that would previously have been out of their price range. ❚ Allowing you to upsell – typically, finance customers spend on average 30% more than non-finance customers. ❚ Increasing your business – many of our partners have increased their sales by more than 60%. This has allowed them to expand and grow their businesses.

Q

What type of products in the equestrian or country sector could be sold on finance?

A

Our finance packages are very flexible and allow qualifying customers spending above £250 to apply. Finance can be used on one expensive item such as a saddle, or, alternatively, for a mixture of items such as a helmet, horse rug and safety equipment which, in total, can cost between £250 and £25,000.

Q

Is buying on finance becoming more popular?

Lots of UK high street retailers offer credit, so why not equestrian retailers?

A

Yes, buying on finance is becoming more popular, especially in the sports and leisure industry where equipment can be expensive. Customers are more aware of finance with lots of High Street retailers advertising credit facilities. Finance is also more accessible than ever. The application process though our state-of-the-art fulfilment system – OmniPort – is online and completely paperless, giving you the flexibility to transact in-store, online or via mail order. Applications take only a few minutes and responses are delivered in under 30 seconds.

Q

How do you ensure the customer keeps to the payment agreement?

A

Once a customer is accepted for credit, they e-sign their credit agreement and a Direct Debit is set up. It is our responsibility to collect the repayments from the customer. We pay the retailer the full cost of the product, the day after goods

are dispatched. This can improve your cashflow, with faster settlements than payments taken on credit cards.

Q A

How much does it cost?

OCRF offers a no-cost proposition to retailers. There is no initial sign-up fee, no on-going processing costs – even for a declined application – and no ‘3rd Party’ subscription costs, such as a trade association membership.

“A business that is committed will go the extra mile to fulfil client’s particular needs” 54 Equestrian June 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

Musing about the essential foundations of business for a talk I was giving, it occurred to me how many words describing underpinning structures commence with the letter ‘C’.

will outperform job descriptions, take on challenges and work towards finding workable solutions.

Consolidation: ‘growth’ for

business terms? It is intrinsic values that help to create staff loyalty. Culture creates customer loyalty related to the belief that the business is based on integrity, honesty, fairness and desire to do a good job. More broadly, culture helps to determine identity, creates links and aids integration.

the sake of simply getting bigger is a disaster in the making! What is the point of getting bigger unless the strategic planning – product, place, price and promotion – results in enhanced profitability? Consolidation should increase profits without necessarily growing larger: it should concentrate energies, improve focus and result in exemplar standards throughout the organisation.

Communications:

Consistency: this is

not that many years ago ‘communications’ were perceived as ‘letters’ and ‘the telephone’. Now the modes of communication – passing messages – are increasingly diverse and the method chosen will very much depend on the addressee and their relationship with the subject. Communicating within the business is important, especially when the business demonstrates exponential growth. ‘Internal Communications’ directly relate to the Culture of the business. Communications may be formal, informal, horizontal or vertical: the larger and/or more diverse the business, the broader the communications. Good communications provide positive messages that create goodwill. Poor communications create barriers. Lack of communication is a death knell to business! By the same token, overloaded communication can be the nail in the coffin of any business!

something that matters from the very top of the organisation and run throughout all levels. We want consistency from our suppliers and we want our clients to be consistent. Customers who liked a product the first time – and who can rely on consistent quality – purchase consistently!

Culture: how to define it in

Commitment: this is surely demonstrated by ‘actions’. The business is Committed to exemplar standards. Committed staff will comply with the same standards. A business that is Committed will go the extra mile to fulfil client’s particular needs. Staff who are Committed

Capitalise: ability to calculate the current value of an asset – or reserve funds – and convert it into capital.

Challenges: every business faces challenges. Identifying and mitigating risk is a challenge. The speed of technological and economic changes can mean that something that worked last week – yesterday – even this morning – may not work this afternoon! Challenges involving

problem-solving should be a positive experience and unifying and result in creative thinking. Challenges are only dangerous when they are perceived as ‘negative’ and are allowed to reduce morale.

Complexities: no business is entirely ‘simple’. Complexity demands sufficient capacity – another ‘c-word’ – to deal with the ‘issue’ before it becomes a crisis.

Concentration: it might seem strange to include a word that indicates ability to focus attention on a single ‘issue’ – possibly one that must be sorted irrespective of constant interruptions. Ability to concentrate in today’s often fast and noisy working environment is a big asset in any business. Compliance: is increasingly comprehensive and, in business terms, our need to comply has never been greater. We are required to fulfil the terms of multiple legislation, rules and regulations; meet the demands of accepted practices; fulfil the terms of contracts. Failure to comply may be intentional or through ignorance or as a result of neglect. Intended or unintended, whatever the reason, retribution, in various unpleasant forms, will almost undoubtedly follow! Credit: something needed by every business. Creditworthy is a plus; the business is considered financially sound, thus a good risk and expected to be able to repay the loan. A company that doesn’t enjoy that description will have trouble raising capital and when it is offered, the terms offered are likely to be punitive. I am sure readers have a lot more C – words that help to define business – confidence, counsellor, creativity and credentials spring to mind!

If you're not supporting your advertising with PR

Your customers are only seeing half the picture. The right PR activity adds real credibility to your advertising; editorial coverage is seen as more reputable, trustworthy and perceived by your potential customers to be more independent, than advertising. So every time you spend money placing an advert and you don’t support it it with at least a press release, you’re missing a major opportunity to let your potential customers know that crucial little bit more about you and your products. But there’s more to successful PR than just a press release. Successful PR is about doing things at the right time, to the right people, using the right media, for the right reasons.

So, if your PR doesn’t do all that, time after time, then you need to talk to PressPoint.

The evolution of language

Ken has a go at keeping up with the ‘yoof’, reflecting on changing modern language, the growth of text speak and its impact on business. Why is it that, with so many different ways of communicating, we so often fail to make our messages clear? The fact that we are bombarded by dozens (no – hundreds!) of emails on a daily basis doesn’t necessarily mean that the text is lucid and tells us what we want to know. And yes, I understand the use of databases – no doubt produced at considerable expense – appears to be a good way of circulating information but I do wonder how many recipients are genuinely interested. I always feel obliged to glance through ‘Round Robin’ emails – which takes time. Very rarely do I open an email of this type and discover it to be of genuine interest to us! Surely investigation of the time allocated, and how much of it is wasted and how much of it is productive, would be a worthy subject for a PhD? I joke not! A friend of mine, an ex-WREN officer, prides herself on writing letters by hand – and she has legible writing too! I have never enjoyed writing letters although I perceive their value in some circumstances: commiserations, congratulations, sympathy, and so on. Watching children busy on their mobiles sending text messages – even though they are sitting next to one another – still amazes me! What surprises me even more is my inability to understand the language employed – and the abbreviations used are well beyond my powers of interpretation! I heard teen language described as ‘new-fangled slang’. I am told that some professors and linguists claim that, far from destroying the English language, the ‘new slang’ is innovating and enriching the language. That is as maybe but that doesn’t eliminate the need for a specific

56 Equestrian June 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk

dictionary! I recall it was once quite trendy to speak the way people wrote: nowadays the number of subtexts used makes that impossible. Well – LOL– my ability with modern language indicates that we should be ‘laughing out loud! There being many different interpretations of WLF, I am told this can confuse the most advanced user of text language. I understand the most popular is ‘with the lady friend’! Bearing in mind that teenagers – and their parents – are frequent visitors to tack shops and saddlery outlets, I wonder if job descriptions for staff should include ability to deal with text language? OMG – that is an old one that readers will recall – but LOL – perhaps we really do need to update our thinking? I don’t like text language and my spoken English is somewhat dated: I describe a superb saddle as ‘super’! A young friend tells me that numerous businesses have been set up purely as slang translators – not for teenagers wanting to extend their text vocabularies but for business people who find it necessary to update their

language skills! I can see that VBD – ‘very big deal’ might be useful – if YGTI – ‘you get the idea’. Perhaps we should all upgrade QAP – ‘as quickly as possible’ – just INCYDK (‘in case you didn’t know’!). I occasionally describe something as ‘the bees’ knees ‘which apparently dates from the 1920s. I enjoyed Barry Humphries speaking ‘Strine’ and he was probably responsible for the English adopting ‘barbie’ – not in relation to the blondehaired doll but with reference to barbecue when beefburgers were accompanied with ‘tinnies’ and everyone was wearing their ‘sunnies’. I am told Pony Club and Riding Club members make use of FOMHL – fell off my horse laughing – and FTC - forgot the carrots – and MOMH– Master of the muck heap. I rather like UD – unplanned dismount. The one retailers – and equine trainers, instructors, vets, farriers and the rest -– need to know about: OOM – out of money! Oops! Maybe that resulted from MHTS – more horses than sense! Language changes are often here

Everything evolves – but what goes around comes around. I will conclude on this platitudinous note: suffice to say that a surprising number of books (dictionaries!) are available on the subject of ‘slang’ – and (so I am told) a number of CDs. Surely it cannot be as difficult as learning Chinese or Russian? (I feel I am getting the hang of it! AATF– always and totally forever – but I guess ABD – already been done. And now I am AFK – away from keyboard!

interview

5 minutes with...

Martin Balmer

from Trilanco Introduce your company please:

Trilanco is the UK’s largest animal health and equine products wholesaler. We’re based in Poulton-le-Fylde and supply retailers all over the UK and beyond with over 12,000 products from the leading suppliers all over the world. We do carry a lot of equine products, but also stock pet and agricultural lines to ensure that we can cater for all of our retail customers’ needs. We employ 73 people, which includes six ASMs that cover the UK and Ireland, and also includes our own delivery drivers who deliver all across the UK each week in our own fleet of vehicles.

How has the equestrian industry changed over your career? There have been a lot of changes since I started in the industry, but I have seen a big move into EPOS systems and online ordering. I’ve also noticed that retailers are becoming a lot more customer focused, which has to be good for the consumer.

What was your career path that led to this point? Being a family business, I started sweeping the warehouse and unloading vehicles and have moved up through different areas of the business to where I am now. I have worked in every department in the company and have thoroughly enjoyed it – I also feel it’s been a really important learning process as I understand how each area works, what’s possible and also how we can improve things for our team as well as our customers.

caught your eye recently? I had the honour of meeting Natasha Baker a few years ago – she is a truly inspiring person and you can’t help but to be blown away by what she’s achieved. As for product innovations that have caught my eye, there are so many good products on the market it’s hard to choose! I have to say that one of our own lines, the Easidri Grooming Towel, stands out as it is SO useful. After washing and grooming one of our horses, I realised that it really is a godsend. It makes life so much easier as the horse can go from wet to dry in no time at all and it works very well on my Bearded Collie, Rosie, too. It’s a simple product but it’s really effective and our customers love it. The feedback on the Easidri products is incredible.

What do you think is the secret to Trilanco’s success? There are lots of aspects to our business that our customers like…but I really think that always keeping our focus on them, our customers, has helped enormously. We’re a wholesaler, so it’s our job to supply our customers with what they want from a range of suppliers in a timely fashion, to make their lives easier. We do this by holding good stocks of the products we sell, offering great delivery options

M a rtin Balmer through carriage paid orders and van runs to low cost postage on other orders. We make it easy to order through our estore, the phone and our ASMs, which our customers really appreciate. We also provide information about the latest offers so customers can really make the most of great opportunities. We also pride ourselves on being helpful, honest and friendly – people deal with people, and we know this.

What are you most proud of about your company? That we are still a private family business.

Where do you see your business in the next ten years? Being the best that we can be and delivering excellence right across the business, oh and I’ll be 60 then too!
