The aim of the spoga horse Innovation Award is to discover today’s and tomorrow’s innovations for horse and rider and to sustainably promote the equestrian sport industry. This autumn the Award will be presented for the 14th time. Exhibitors can still submit one or more products for entry to the award competition up until June 30. The award is presented by Koelnmesse together with its media partner, the trade publication, equitrends, in the three categories ‘Horse & Stable’, ‘Riders’, and ‘Saddles & Accessories’. A jury and the trade audience of the spoga horse will select the winners from 15 nominees during the fair and tribute will be paid to the winners during the award ceremony. The spoga horse Innovation Award has in the meantime
become tradition and enjoys increasing popularity. In autumn 2013, the jury was spoilt for choice between the 49 innovative products that had been submitted for entry and once again it’s likely to be an unenviable task this year for the expert jury that comprises of representatives from the trade, specialised press and world of science. The five nominations per category will be announced in mid-August. The nominated products will be presented during the fair in the Innovation Award Nominees Gallery at Stand G-9 in Hall 4.2. In order to further promote the innovative approach of the fair, the framework conditions of the competition have been extended. For example for the first time in 2014, all of the submitted products will be exhibited or illustrated in the Innovation
Award Area on the Boulevard in front of Hall 4.2 in addition to on the Innovation Award Nominees Gallery. A unique opportunity for a first-class, free and attentiongrabbing secondary placement for all participants. Also new in 2014: a prize for second place will be awarded in each category. This means that six Innovation Awards will be presented in total. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 2 September 2014 at 12.00 noon in the Innovation Award Nominees Gallery at Stand G-9 in Hall 4.2. The spoga horse 2014 is open to trade visitors on 31 August and 1 September from 09:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m. and on 2 September from 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. Further information is available at www.spogahorse.com.

After being affected by flooding in February, supplement specialist Global Herbs Ltd has recently relocated to new premises in Chichester. Having being based in Lavant for over nine years, the move has come at an exciting time for the company which has just launched a brand new pet range to complement the already wellestablished equine products and chicken care range. The move to Terminus Road, Chichester offers the company greater space for expansion as well as the advantage of more accessible transport links. Steve Jenkins, marketing manager at Global Herbs, said: “We are looking forward to being part of the growing business community in Chichester and taking our own operation to exciting new levels.”

UK NEWS
Building Anglo-French relations Duff switches to Matchmakers The British Equestrian Trade Association is offering companies the opportunity to develop their export potential and build contacts within the French equestrian business community through a two-day event designed to showcase the best of British and French products and services. BETA will join UK partners United Kingdom Trade & Investment (UKTI) and The Equestrian Index and French partners Calvados Stratégie, France Galop, Hippolia, CCI Caen Normandie, CCI International Normandie and Yorne Development in organising a collaborative Business at the Races programme. The initiative will take place in Normandy from 3-4 July in the run-up to the World Equestrian Games. This will follow an evening get-together and briefing on French business culture on July 2. Participants will take part in visits to the National Equine Imaging Centre and the prestigious racecourse in Deauville, as well as enjoying
a networking reception with French industry contacts and benefiting from a highly effective B2B programme, which includes one-to-one business meetings with potential key partners. “The event offers a tremendous opportunity for businesses in the UK wishing to reach out to the French market,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams. “Over the past 20 years, there has been a sharp increase in France’s equestrian activity, with just over 1.5 million people claiming to horse-ride on a regular basis. “Its Fédération Française d’Equitation is the third most important Olympic federation in France, with an estimated annual turnover of €12.3 billion. We are extremely excited about being able to offer this chance to members of the British equestrian industry.” Places for the event are available at a cost of £200 per company. For further information or to book a place, please contact Justine Barker, deputy trade adviser, UKTI France. Telephone +33 1 44 51 33 93, or email Justine.barker@fco.gov.uk.
Easibed welcomes Jess to the team Equine bedding manufacturer easibed has welcomed Jess Forgie on board as account manager. Jess, who lives in Shropshire, is the latest addition to the easi-sales team and will be working across both easibed and easichick – a poultry bedding. The 25-year-old’s first insight into the equestrian industry was at age 11 when she looked after four other horses in return for keeping her first horse at a local stable yard. Later on, Jess developed herself further as a rider and got a job riding young horses preparing them for their gradings with the Holsteiner Verband before going on to work at Twemlows Hall Stud. Here she worked closely with the on-site reproduction vet as an AI technician and also assisting with embryo transfers. More recently Jess worked as a retail supervisor and equine specialist for Wynnstay Group Plc, an agricultural supply company, where she gained

extensive industry and customer knowledge. Jess said: “I think a combination of all of my previous experience has prepared me for the job at easibed. I have had a passion for all things horse since the age of 11 and my enthusiasm and drive will hopefully give me a great grounding for the challenges the role at easibed will bring.” Jess is looking forward to meeting and talking with many of easibed’s new and existing customers over the coming months.
Matchmakers International has announced the appointment of Phil Duff as a Non-Executive Director as of May 1. With over 30 years’ experience in the equestrian industry, most recently as managing director of Ariat Europe, Phil has a longstanding record with leading equestrian and country lifestyle brands. His entrepreneurial skills helped establish Ariat as a premier footwear brand in the UK and Eire and he was instrumental in the growth of the company into Europe and beyond. Both Edward Wakefield and Oliver Hoare, Co-Chairmen of Matchmakers International are looking forward to welcoming Phil to the team. “We are absolutely delighted that Phil has agreed to join the Matchmakers Board,” says Edward. “His knowledge, relationships and experience will be invaluable as, with the benefit of new investment, Matchmakers continues its renewed focus on outstanding product, great brands and first class customer service.” As a past chairman of BETA, Phil
will bring a wealth of expertise to his role. “Matchmakers represent a family of iconic brands that are steeped in tradition and history,” he comments. “I am looking forward to influencing their return to prominence in the market, both in the UK and further afield. There is determination, energy and vision amongst the new team here and I am confident that they can exceed expectation at every level.”

Hoof and leg care
On a safe footing We look set fair for another glorious summer and whilst that’s certainly nothing to sniff at, it’s important to remember that the resultant hard ground can lead to hoof and leg problems in horses. We look at the issues likely to be faced and the products available across the board.
L
ong, wet winters followed by hot, dry summers present horse owners with a variety of challenging ground conditions from hard, road-like surfaces to heavy mud, which can bring about tendon, ligament, joint and hoof issues. Many believe the trend for long, baking summers is set to continue with warmer than usual temperatures and below-average rainfall, and the negative impact on horses’ feet and limbs has already become apparent. “Horse hoof quality and growth does vary considerably with the weather,” says vet Gemma Coleman from Westover Vets. “Sudden changes in weather from wet to dry may cause contraction and expansion of the hoof wall leading to the deterioration of any cracks and this in turn can result in pain and lameness,” agrees Rosie Fell from Keratex. “Situations such as dewy morning grass followed by hot dry summer afternoons mean that hooves become saturated as they take up a lot of moisture too quickly,” she says. “The internal structure of the hooves then expand to accommodate excess water molecules, As the grass dries up throughout the morning, this excess moisture will evaporate out through the hooves very rapidly, causing the previously expanded structures to contract again quickly as moisture leaves the hoof. Cracks then start to appear in the hooves and, as they become softer, there may be problems.” Ground conditions place similar strains on legs. Ligament and tendon injuries are commonplace and can occur out of the blue. Lasting for months at a time – sometimes up to a year – and requiring regular veterinary assistance and long periods of rest, such injuries can easily end a professional horse’s career. A lack of rain will be equally or
8
Legs and hooves are increasingly susceptible to damage as the ground firms up
more detrimental for hooves and legs as the ground hardens. Dry conditions lead to excessively hard hoof walls that lose their ‘shock absorbing’ ability and have an increased tendency to crack. “There are various factors that can cause weak hooves, from genetic conditions and hard ground through to previous health issues such as laminitis or hoof abcesses. It is also important to remember that diet will play an essential role in maintaining healthy hoof and skin growth,” says Steve Jenkins of Global Herbs. Items for effective hoof and leg care can vary from conditioners, dressings and hardeners to barrier creams, powders and supplements. These items vary wildly in price and will have

specific instructions for use, depending on whether they are one-time applications or daily additives. Natural alternatives should always be supplied alongside, giving choice to those customers who may feel strongly about using unnatural ingredients.
Hoof supplements Proper nutrition can play an important role in healthy hoof growth. Alongside external treatments, specially designed hoof supplements can provide additional, internal support, particularly to those horses suffering from or most at risk of dry and brittle hooves. There’s a huge range of products available to retailers and it can be hard to decide what to stock. There are
many hoofcare products on the market, but it is good to select a trusted brand with a range of products that deal with the various hoof challenges faced by customers. Manufacturers spend a lot of time and investment in developing a range of products that complement each other, meet a variety of needs and will work together if required, so take advantage of the research and development that has gone into this. “Traditionally biotin and seaweed are used to promote healthy growth but calcium, zinc, methionine and protein also have a positive effect on hooves, and are included in Global Herb’s ‘SupaHoof’. It is important to remember that it takes six to nine months for hooves to grow
Extremes of wet and dry can damage hooves
down and so results will only be seen over time,” states Steve Jenkins. Concentrating on the actual ingredients is important, particularly when it comes to being able to accurately advise the customer about the product. “When it comes to hoof supplements, look at what’s actually in the supplement and the levels that these ingredients are included at per daily dose,” advises Equimins. “Look at the amount that your customer is expected to feed per day as your customers will of course
want value for money. Do your research, speak to customers, ask the manufacturer why you should stock their product over another, look for testimonials and why the products you sell stand out – do they have a money back guarantee, for example. Are the levels of key ingredients greater than in other products? Make sure you have the information at hand and the right products to help your customers come to an informed decision.” The individual circumstances of the horse in question should be

Hoof and leg care
The horse BETAbarefoot by numbers Lucy Nicholas of Trelawne Equine explains what needs considering when stocking barefoot products. Retailers should always emphasise the importance of three elements that the barefoot horse requires when recommending hoof boots for barefoot horses. ■ A good, regular trimming schedule ■ A good diet based on food the horse’s body evolved to thrive on ■ Exercise, including encouraging natural movement in the field and little or no confinement The following tips will also help you provide the best service to customers: 1. All hoof boots require the customer to take the measurement of their horse’s hooves after a fresh trim, and have a growth tolerance built in. 2. Consider purchasing a ‘fit kit’, which some manufacturers offer – this is a set of ‘shells’ that helps customers choose the correct size of boot. You could rent these kits to customers; in fact, many retailers offer hoof boots to hire or try, in the same way as bit hire. considered before opting for hoof supplements. “The whole diet needs to be assessed and specific supplements recommended based on the diet and forage being fed,” says Lucy Nicholas of Trelawne Equine. “A staple for many bare footers is the MgO and also high strength biotin with methionine and zinc but as with anything
10
3. Advise customers to take the hooves’ width and length measurements in mm for accuracy. Boots that only require one measurement (as opposed to length and width) should be looked upon with caution. The width of the hoof should be taken to the widest point; the length is taken to the buttress of the heel so the weight-bearing surface of the hoof is measured. 4. Most horses will measure round or slightly longer than wide. If a customer’s measurements indicate a wider than long hoof or a very long narrow hoof, seek advice from the distributor or manufacturer; supplying pictures of the hooves from the customer will help.
are regarded as fitting ‘below’ the hairline. Below hairline boots are generally the most suitable for competitive or long-distance use, but are also generally the most sensitive to incorrect sizing and fitting. Boots that are one-piece and cover the coronet band, such as Old Mac G2, Easyboot Trail or Swiss horse boots, are generally easier to size and more tolerant to slight size inaccuracies.
5. There are two main boot categories; above and below the hairline. Soft ‘gaiter’ style fixings are not included in this description, so boots such as Easyboot Epic or Renegades
6. Stock boots that will enable customers to get a really close fit. A good hoof boot will be made of modern materials, with a sole made from a plastic or rubber composite, to give good grip and durability. The upper should be soft above the hairline, but the main shell may be made of a strong flexible plastic or rubber, similar to the boot’s sole around the hoof capsule. Metal should not be used other than for fixings or fastening, and should not be in contact with the horse’s hoof.
feed related care must be taken not to double up on any vitamin or mineral.” “Recommending a hoof supplement depends on the horse and the individual circumstances, but most people consider hoof supplements when they want to improve the conditions of the horse’s hooves,”
says Equimins. “We stock three different hoof supplements to cater for different needs, to ensure that there’s a supplement to help support healthy growth and one for hooves in need of serious repair.” When choosing products for a barefoot horse, it is important to understand that hoof boots
Equestrian Business Monthly | June 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
and horses hooves are different shapes and sizes, and just like saddles it is important to ensure the customer has the best boot for the job in hand. Unlike fitting saddles, boots can be fitted from measurements so they can be much easier to tailor. Companies should always be happy to help a retailer advise about suitability of boots and fitting which further increases the success of the sale and confidence in the product. Being a ‘consumable’ item, boots and sundries for barefoot horses are a good way to gain repeat sales, particularly with comfort pads, an item designed to go inside the boot to help with concussion and give support to the hoof. Hoof and leg care is essential in ensuring the soundness of a horse and should be as routine to horse owners as feeding and watering. For that reason the significant sector within the market that offers such a wide array of products in this area simply cannot afford to be overlooked. ■

Nettex Summer Hoof is a moisturising and strengthening formula that will maintain hoof suppleness whatever the weather does. Nettex Summer Hoof aids moisture retention in order to prevent splitting, cracking and chipping that commonly affects horses’ feet during the summer months. Highly breathable, the cream can be applied by brush or sponge to the hooves and soles. A blend of keratin, vitamin B6 and glycerine in a white oil base, it penetrates deep into the hoof wall to keep hooves supple and pliable.

Weathering
THE STORM
After emerging from the worst recession in more than a generation, now is the time for British equestrian manufacturers to look forward to the future with a new confidence. The debate regarding Britain’s place within the European Union and world at large represents just about the most significant geopolitical football of the day. Whilst the results of the recent EU elections are unlikely to have any direct or imminent bearing on Britain’s position within that institution, thoughts governing the relevance of British manufacturing in relation to importing remain important. The economic crisis of 2008 laid bare the shortcomings which had long since undermined the British manufacturing sector, but with the economy showing modest but definitive signs of recovery, the evidence suggests that ‘Made in Britain’ is once again a label on the rise. By utilising the UK workforce, British companies can make the most of the skills available thanks to a solid educational infrastructure. Apprenticeship schemes, schools, colleges and universities provide a welleducated, highly skilled workforce with a strong work ethic that can make products skilfully as well as possessing the innovation required to develop new ideas.
Made in Britain The ‘country-of-origin’ effect should never be dismissed when it comes to customers’ purchasing behaviour. Research shows that consumers’ broad perceptions of a country, including of its national characteristics, economic and political background, history, traditions, and representative products, combine to create an overall image or stereotype that is then attached to the products of that country. The ‘Made in Britain’ badge is well established as being a positive one in the minds of customers, particularly in a market where craftsmanship and quality count for so much. Linda Bartlett from SCH Supplies explains that, “Well made, robust items often carry the words ‘Made in Britain’. It also gives people a sense of pride to be supporting a British company.” There is anecdotal evidence to suggest that this desire to ‘back British’ has only increased since the crisis of 2008, particularly with subsequent political utterings about austerity and ‘all being in this together’. Added to this, there is increased
recognition that merely choosing the cheapest available product often represents a false economy. “Some customers really do want products made in Britain and will ask specifically if the product is UK-made,” says John Horrell, managing director of Dodson & Horrell. “The expertise, innovation and know-how remains a key selling point within British manufacturing. It’s something we need to sustain and continue to harness and, on the whole, I think we are doing precisely that.” From managing directors, to factory workers, packaging designers and lorry drivers, the manufacturing industry provides work for millions of people in Britain and the equestrian industry supports tens of thousands. There will always be cheaper products manufactured abroad, but recent investigations are bringing to light the shocking conditions in ‘sweat shop’ style factories. The ‘out of sight, out of mind’ attitude is being forcibly changed. British workers have rights enshrined by law that workforces in developing nations could only dream of.
British benefits So what is it that makes Britain a desirable place for equestrian businesses to operate? Peter Phillips of Abbey England details some of the reasons: “The first and obvious answer to this is that delivery times are so much faster. Secondly, transport costs are reduced and usually minimum order levels are not as high, making it possible to buy small and often, thus better controlling cash flow. With a UK company it is also usually easier to resolve any problems than with a manufacturer located thousands of miles away who may not speak English perfectly.” The mere fact that the equestrian market in Britain can be described as an industry in its own right goes some way towards underlining the size and value of the sector. Globally speaking, the market in Britain is a match for any other in the world. British manufacturers are perceived as leaders rather than followers in research and development and offer outstanding product design and performance. One of the major benefits of being located in this country is

quality control – both of service and products. “Not only are we based in the South West, but the production plant is situated in the same place, allowing full control over the production process and every aspect of sourcing, blending and new product creation. Having production at the company’s base also means that it’s possible to make specialists as required,” says David Willey, managing director of Equimins. The point is stressed by SarahJane Fedarb, managing director of Champion Manufacturing: “Aside from the obvious benefit in helping to support the local British economy and in keeping jobs here at home, having the Champion factory in Britain allows us to operate with a strict Total
Quality Management philosophy at every stage – from new product development, to production, to shipping and customer service. This allows us to be 100% confident in the quality and performance of each and every product we sell, which is crucial as we’re in the business of rider safety.” Linda Bartlett adds: “By sourcing materials as locally as possible we are able to keep greater control over production and quality. Retailers can also know that they do not necessarily have to carry huge amounts of stock, or give customers unreasonable lead times because ordering can take too long.” Not only does being based in Britain reduce lead times, it also allows companies to offer bespoke services much more
TRADITION MEETS TECHNOLOGY
readily. Jean Hammond of Golly Galoshes emphasises the point: “We can listen to feedback and if changes need to be made we can do that without having, for example, a thousand pieces left in stock. If we manufactured in Taiwan we could not offer this service with a turnaround of, say, a week or two at most.” Sarah Jane-Fedarb explains further the benefits experienced at Champion: “Basing production in Britain also allows us to offer exceptional customer service. We have solid, long term relationships with our suppliers for raw materials and components and they will always go the extra mile for us because they know we’re loyal. This allows us to dramatically reduce production lead times once designs have been perfected and with production under our own control in Cardiff, we can manufacture and ship products within weeks, rather than the months required by overseas manufacturers.”
Onwards and upwards The perilous economic climate of the past number of years has been weathered and there are clear
reasons to be positive about the prospects for British manufacturers and retailers. In terms of the equestrian industry, there are some sectors – such as saddlery – that appear to have a particularly strong future in Britain. The need to remain at the cutting edge of design is crucial to manufacturers who have long since been at the forefront of advancements within the equestrian market. Sarah-Jane Fedarb describes the importance of this in relation to the future of the industry: “British companies have always been key innovators in the equestrian industry and it is crucial that such home-grown innovation is retained. We are a nation of horse lovers and lead the way when it comes to developments within the equestrian industry worldwide and this is a position that we must work hard to retain. It will be manufacturing companies with a long standing tradition of quality manufacturing and decades of experience, such as Champion, that have the strategies in place to continue development who will continue to point the way forward.” ■

The Allen & Page mill in Norfolk may well be a state-of-the-art flagship for British manufacturing, but the company’s values and guiding principles are steeped in heritage and tradition. This innovative, family-owned British company has four generations of experience and uses natural ingredients of the highest quality, from trusted suppliers in the horse feeds it produces. All ingredients are checked for quality before they even enter the mill and before these ingredients can be used in horse feeds there are important criteria to be met. Non-GM All of the ingredients used in Allen & Page feeds are nongenetically modified (non-GM) ‘hard identity preserved’ (hard IP). This means that they contain no more than 0.1% genetically modified (GM) material. Omega 3 Oils Only premium grade vegetable oils are used in production; animal fats and recovered oils such as chip fat have never been used. Non-GM soya is pressed – not harshly extracted with the solvent hexane.

Eazitools offers a range of unique ergonomic stable and field tools which feature a double cranked shaft to minimise the strain on the user’s back. In 2012 the company made the decision to move all manufacture back to the UK. Managing Director Becky Ball explains, ‘We originally had the Rag-Fork made in the UK but in 2002 we switched to the Far East. After 10 years importing we found that the quality was declining and the price rising. We teamed up with a tool-making firm in Yorkshire and we haven’t looked back since. We now have greater control over quality, lead times and work closely with the factory on new product development.’ Eazitools plans to launch two new products later this year and look to grow the Eazitools brand into the European Market.

EquiAmi was founded by Riding Club member Hilary Bentley after developing a training aid to help her horse when nothing else available was suitable. The prototype was so successful that taking the aids forward was a natural step. EquiAmi aids are unique and this is acknowledged by full UK & US patents. They are self-centring, encouraging engagement, self-carriage and wither lift whilst discouraging leaning and resistance. Horses develop power, lightness and swing with improved balance, paces and soft contact. They are simple to use hence suitable for experts and recreational riders alike. With endorsements from top riders, trainers & therapists for competition horses and rehabilitation from injury or surgery the products are proven over time.
Flint’s Yard is a new British company with a brand new product – Itching? – a midge repellent lotion for all equines. The company has invested many years of research into sweet itch and repelling midges. Itching? received an 83% success rate with trials. Itching? has a unique formula which aids in the control of skin conditions such as sweet itch. Its Aloe Vera base cools and soothes hot, itchy skin whilst the repelling qualities actively repel the midges. It is of a non-sticky consistency and dries transparent, therefore avoiding product build up after repeated use. It can be used neat or diluted into a spray for cost effective, maximum coverage.

KEN LYNDON-DYKES
A sign of the times The issue of Genetic Modification has – and continues to be – the cause of considerable debate. What considerations does its use bring to bear on the production of horse feed?
G
enetically-modified (GM) food has been dominating the headlines in some papers for a number of years now. Views are polarised amongst nations, amongst governments, amongst scientists, professional bodies, charities and individuals. The amount of material being issued ‘for’ and ‘against’ is overwhelming and, as you would expect, some of it is very technical – whilst some has very little substance to it at all. What appears not to have entered the agenda to any great degree yet is the use of GM in relation to animal feed.
“ Some of the material is very technical – whilst some has very little substance to it at all.” Persuaded or not, like it or not, the use of GM technology is spreading. Some will say it is totally commercially driven – others will recognise the necessity of providing food for a vastly increasing world population. GMO Compass – a website set up with the help of EU money – provides interesting updates in relation to GM (the European Commission and other EU agencies are not
responsible for the content of the website). The latest update, issued May 7, states that the feed given to Europe’s chickens, cows and pigs usually contains ingredients made from genetically modified plants. The report goes on: “In addition, animal feed often has additives and enzymes that are produced with genetically modified microorganisms. Although GM animal feed must be labelled, the end products of animal production like milk, eggs and meat do not require labelling.” Food for thought? Pardon the pun! According to the same report,
soy meal is the most important constituent of animal feed in EU countries. Being a relatively inexpensive source of protein and oil, it accounts for “55% of protein- rich animal feed” (in EU countries). Soy is used in the formulation of some horse feeds. Some UK horse feed processors state that the soy they employ is not GM-related. It can logically be assumed from this that some soy is GM-related. Are most horse owners aware of this anomaly? Does it matter if GM constituents are used in horse-feed? Are horse owners seriously interested? Are most horse-owners – and other people – confused? Something about which there is no confusion: The EU Member States import an estimated 40 million tonnes of raw soy products annually, half of which is said to be used in animal feed. The soya beans are imported from various countries such as the United States, Brazil and Argentina, all of which are leading producers – and which practice large scale GM soybean cultivation. This same report suggests that 60 – 90% of global soybean exports are derived from GM plants. The report also contains information in relation to maize: apparently we are pretty self-sufficient in Europe – and an estimated two-thirds of EU production is consigned for use in animal feed. An interesting and surprising point derived from the same report is that, “despite methods that are becoming more and more sensitive, tests have not yet been able to establish a difference in the meat, milk or eggs of animals according to the type of feed they are fed.” Readers will no doubt be aware of concerns about the use of GM
“ Tests have not yet established a difference in the meat, milk or eggs of animals according to the type of feed they are fed.” alfalfa. Many consumers are worried about non–GM crops and GM crops growing in ‘close existence’ and the possibility of GM crops ‘going feral’. This is a complicated subject, one that requires more deliberation; despite wading through quite a substantial amount of material, I haven’t really come to any definite conclusions. Although, I think, most scientists are proGM, there are exceptions, surely indicating that the knowledgeable and informed amongst us have differing views! One further comment on the subject of horse feeds: Some owners feel strongly about electing to feed rations comprised of organically produced constituents. Increasing numbers of owners manage their horse paddocks organically. It will also be interesting to see how far these trends develop, whether or not they are merely a backlash to GM itself. Discussion, debate, dissension – they all help to keep the industry vibrant, interested (and interesting!) and abreast of the times! ■

Saddlery & leather care
Saddle up
Even in an age of huge technological developments, leather remains a material integral to all equine pursuits, so understanding the product and how it is used is important to all retailers.
A
quality saddle will represent one of the most substantial investments an owner will make in relation to their horse. Saddle design has of course evolved enormously down the years, with developments in terms of style, manufacture and fitting constantly changing in line with considerations for the welfare, safety and performance of horse and rider. The demands made on horses by the modern equestrian disciplines and sports are different from those that were made even in the relatively recent past. Saddle design, boosted by no little research and development, has come a very long way, and saddle fitting itself has been revolutionised. Today’s riders have the choice of a multiplicity of saddle designs, and elite riders continue to work with saddle makers and fitters to produce innovative designs. With saddles typically costing in the region of £1000-£3000, customers will of course invest plenty of time and consideration before purchasing and, as such, it’s incumbent on the retailer to be able to offer a range of alternatives as well as the expert advice and knowledge that will help them make the right choice. As technologies advance and rarely are horses seen sharing saddles – something that would have been commonplace in the past – a suitable selection of saddle pegs and bridle hooks – both in the tack room and outside the stable are necessary. A saddle
32
“ It’s incumbent on the retailer to be able to offer a range of alternatives as well as expert advice and knowledge.” placed on an open stable door is an accident waiting to happen. It only takes one unfortunate incident to damage the saddle’s components or scratch the leather. Stocking and displaying a selection of these along with rug racks, water bucket holders and stall guards gives customers the chance to see the product in action and helps to clear floor space for the retailer. Different materials continue to be investigated. Huge advances have been made in the production of synthetic saddle and accessories and, whilst all trees were traditionally made of wood and steel – and many still are – today far more are produced from strong synthetic materials. The fitting process is an allimportant one, as Ken LyndonDykes knows all too well: “Adjustable trees that enable the width fitting to be altered are valuable additions – arguably with one big stumbling block; rider’s assumptions that they are able to make adequate adjustments to the width themselves. All riders should elect to use the services of a Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) qualified saddle fitter.” “Adjustable gullet plates have

The Optima Deluxe Dressage saddle from Black Country Saddles
also made a very useful addition to saddle design, but again few riders are in a position to judge which plate to select. Nor are they able to evaluate, and take into account the way the overall fit will be influenced.” Manufacturers have put a great deal of time into researching air-filled panels. These saddles now have a considerable following, especially those that can be adjusted in accordance with the horse’s changing shape. Traditional flocking materials – wool and felt – have been largely overtaken by wool/synthetic mixes or synthetics in entirety.
Is the industry safe? Leather is undoubtedly the most important material in the equestrian industry. And leather is produced by converting animal skins – largely, in the case of the equestrian industry, those of cows. But some scientists suggest that, in the future, livestock production won’t be a viable use of land. Of course, the saddlery
industry isn’t the only business sector to be leather dependent. A number of excellent synthetic materials are already available – and no doubt in time others will be developed. But what about one of the other great problems of the modern world: how to deal with the thousands and thousands of tons of nonbiodegradable rubbish all around the world produced every single day – which includes, of course, most synthetic materials? No finite solution has been found and, whilst it’s true that recycling plays a growing part, some forms are very energy dependent and thus not sustainable in the long term. In terms of the here and now, the signs are that Britain’s leather industry is enjoying something of a renaissance, with the traditional hub – Walsall – having weathered the recent economic crisis and now enjoying a period of relative growth. Clearly there remains significant competition from overseas manufacturers, but the trend is for British products generally speaking

ON THE MARKET within the equestrian industry with consumers identifying the quality that tends to mark out home-grown items, and this is something that is true of the saddlery sector specifically. As a result, the saddlery industry in this country appears to be in a safer position now than at any stage in the last few decades, with top-level riders and amateurs alike promoting the benefits of the ‘Made in Britain’ logo.
Leather care After such a sizeable investment, it’s critical that a saddle – indeed all leather – is looked after fastidiously and, to this end, all retailers need to stock the equipment to complement the upkeep of leather products. To get real value out of leather tack it must be regularly cleaned as even the best made and highest quality equipment will break when abused. Regular cleaning of all leatherwork is vital for both safety, durability and longevity. Leather that has been excessively wet, dried out by direct heat or kept in a very dry environment can become hard and brittle,
causing cracks and weaknesses that could lead to broken tack. Cleaning is simple and in an ideal world should be carried out following every use. At the very least tack should be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned and treated once a week, and checked for weak stitching and damage. Bits should be washed after every use to prevent rubbing on the horse’s mouth. A slightly damp cloth should first be used to remove grease and dirt. This should be followed up with an application of saddle soap or leather treatment. Leather needs to breathe and has pores that must not be clogged with large amounts of oil or even polish. Being such an important part of any rider’s equipment, and representing such a significant purchase, it’s well worth stocking a wide range of saddles and maintenance products for prospective customers, all with the relevant informed advice to go with it. These are items consumers will want to get a feel for before buying, giving high-street retailers a definite advantage over on-line sites, and it’s one well worth making the most of. ■

Al Fares Dubai – at the heart of equestrianism Al Fares takes place on October 29-31 2014 in Dubai, a country rich with equestrian heritage from racing to endurance. Read on to discover a vast market of business opportunities in the region.
A
love of horses runs in the blood of most Emiratis, especially a fondness for the classical Purebred Arabian horses that were stalwart companions for centuries. The racing season begins in November with meetings taking place at the Jebel Ali Racetrack, Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club and Meydan Racecourse. Dubai is also a world power in flat racing; its annual World Cup in March is the world’s richest race with a $10 million purse. Even show jumping, historically more of a focus in Western countries, has been growing in the UAE. One recent show jumping competition offered 260,000 dirhams ($70,800) of prize money, while show jumping horses bought for as little as $5,000 in Eastern Europe can
fetch prices of $80,000 in the UAE if they perform well. The industry is also supporting the development of home-grown businesses within the UAE. Several studs in the UAE breed pure Arabian horses, not only for races but also for horse beauty contests, which are popular across the Gulf Arab region. Dubai’s Godolphin stable, which flies some of its 400 horses to Britain in April to race and escape the Gulf’s summer heat, has made $14.8 million in prize money so far this year. That brings the total to $232 million since 1992. Monthly stable, feed and grooming costs typically range from $650 to $1,090 or more, compared to around $450-$970 in Britain, people in the industry said. According to the data compiled
by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (EFI), 7,282 horses are registered to UAE owners, out of which there are 2,000 active endurance horses and 87 racing stables. Compare these to 4,320 in Australia or 800 in France, where riding is extremely popular as well and the business stakes fall in context. A lack of grazing pastures and the harsh climate means that upkeep of these competition horses is even costlier than elsewhere. Breeders import hay and feed from

countries as far as Canada and USA and those associated with the prized equines are constantly looking for the best equestrian products and facilities. Certainly, the UAE takes good care of its horses. The study estimates that annual individual expenditure in the UAE on equine equipment, including sheltering and treatment of horses, is DH 120,000. ■

Hester and Fieldhouse at cutting edge of dressage saddlery Carl Hester MBE, becomes brand ambassador for a new range of saddles “PDS” by British saddle company GFS. into the mix – as were the shapes and needs of the many other riders that Carl had sitting on these new saddles. Carl’s demand’s that his horses must be able to move freely and that nothing must impede their performance was at the heart of the development stage. Appreciating that Carl Hester had given this new saddle brand his time and knowledge GFS made him probably the largest sponsorship deal ever offered in the equestrian market. Carl accepted this and is now delighted to be the international Brand Ambassador for PDS. “I am thrilled to be part of the development of what I consider to be some of the best saddles I have ever ridden in. I am also happy to be supporting a British company.” With a concise range offering fit options for both horse and rider, the saddles are fully adjustable, feature a carbon fibre tree and a speciality foam and flocked panel for pressure distribution – the new PDS collection really will give dressage riders the fit and performance needed for outstanding results – Professional Dressage Solutions (PDS) by Carl Hester is born. his new relationship is the culmination of months of design and development, trial and re-trial by a dedicated team of experts and the UK’s most admired dressage rider and trainer. At the end of 2013, Carl Hester was introduced to Geoff Fieldhouse and his top saddle fitter Helen Stone. Carl tasked the pair with fitting some of his more difficult horses and was hugely impressed with the outcome. Geoff Fieldhouse had been developing a new range of modern, close contact dressage saddles for a number of years, wanting to combine quality craftsmanship with modern technology. On the chance meeting with Carl he was in the final stages of this new PDS range, but having Carl’s input and feedback helped take the range to a new level. Carl’s fine tuning and ability to “feel” the difference in movement and balance enabled the team to add design details and enhance the saddle’s fit and performance. Shopfitting
Fit for purpose
Arranging your outlet to best advantage can be a tricky business. Shopfitters assist with a number of different aspects to ensure your shop looks exactly as you want it and is designed to maximise potential profits. Planning for profit Equestrian shops vary enormously across the country, ranging from the very small to the superstore, and, importantly, in the range of products they offer. However, the customers all have one thing in common; they visit the shop because they are involved in an equine world! Whether you are selling animal feeds, tack, clothing or accessories, it is important that the customer can easily find and buy your products. There are many merchandising systems available but which one is best for you? With 30 years’ experience in designing shop interiors for retailers across the UK, Replan is well placed to offer advice about planning for profit. “It is important that a shopfit be able to pay for itself quickly,” says Aaron Eaton of Replan. “So before we put pen to paper, we make it our business to understand your business.” “Firstly, and probably most importantly, as outsiders, we bring perspective, and although we have a good understanding of equestrian retail, we are seeing your shop with fresh eyes,” says Aaron. “With everything in place, stock rationalized and a fresh new look to the shop, most shopfits are paid for quite quickly,” says Aaron. “Many of our customers are surprised at how affordable it is to have a Replan shopfit and wish they had taken the plunge years ago, especially once they start seeing the benefits of a proper refit.” Replan makes no charge for putting forward a design and quotation, and, even if you don’t go ahead, you will benefit from talking to Replan by seeing your business in a new light. Cashing in with EPoS Electronic point of sale (EPoS) systems are critical in helping equestrian retailers manage their stock, orders, customer records and even in managing an e-commerce site. One of the few things that people tend to neglect is that all the money they have invested in their business has to come back through a till or website. People will have a fantastic display, but then forget about the one thing that is gathering all this information. There are different types of EPoS systems, those that are Replan run through the stages for every successful shopfit: 1. If you are already trading, or have new premises in mind, we measure your shop; an essential start, as accurate dimensions are critical in retail. 2. As we know little about your individual business, we ask a lot of questions. Answering these questions achieves two things: a) it helps sharpen your own thoughts about your business b) it allows us to understand your business, its strengths and its weaknesses (if any). 3. We list your merchandise, asking questions all the time about quantities, stock turn and seasonality. 4. We ask about your competitors and about the history of your shop in the local area. 5. We understand who you are, where you stand in relation to your competitors, what
Equestrian Business Monthly | June 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
threats you are facing and what opportunities there are to improve your business. 6. Using this brief, and our understanding of your business, we re-plan the shop using good, solid, merchandising and customer flow to maximize sales. We use the principles of Demand, Impulse and Browser (DIB) to ensure that your new merchandise displays are in exactly the right places for your customers’ convenience. 7. The new shop design will improve the shopping experience for your customer, and increase the average spend, by encouraging impulse and browser purchases.
“ Modern web-based EPoS solutions have the ability to share stock in real time with the store – or stores – and provide a truly integrated solution” ‘traditional’, whereby the software is hosted on the web – or the ‘cloud’. The web-based EPoS systems are easier to manage for an equestrian retailer, as the software upgrades and data backups are done for them. What’s more, web-based systems link seamlessly with e-commerce sites. One of the main issues faced by independent equestrian retailers when trading online is their actual stock. They can’t normally afford to ring-fence large amounts of valuable stock just for web sales but, at the same time, the vast majority of separate websites don’t communicate in real time to the retailer’s EPoS stock control
Shopfitting system, meaning that web stock levels are either not available online, which reduces consumer confidence, or are simply inaccurate, which allows for sales to be made against stock that has already been sold in store. Moden web-based EPoS solutions have the ability to share stock in real time with the store – or stores – and provide a truly integrated solution. This removes all the above stock issues and allows for a unified customer as well, so the customer tracking and loyalty systems are also integrated, increasing sales. It is even possible for clients to reserve online and collect at store, again in real time, which increases sales again. It is now becoming the norm for systems to be ‘cross channel’, not just multi-channel, so it is imperative that in-store systems can be truly integrated or many hours of staff time can be wasted and sales affected.
Why is it important? Customer management, especially in times of economic uncertainty, is crucial. The role that an EPoS system can play in harnessing client relationships should not be underestimated. Simply by logging a customer’s postcode at the point of sale, retailers can track buying behaviour, tailor marketing material and facilitate loyalty schemes. Amongst other things, success comes from being pro-active in attracting consumers through the door. If you have got a good customer database and you know who buys what and how often they shop with you, it is quite easy to get them to come back in again with some sort of enticement, a discount or new range. EPoS certainly are no

longer merely about taking a sale and clocking a receipt.
Costs v savings EPoS systems help give equestrian retailers greater control of their business, stock, sales, customers and it can manage their e-commerce business if they trade online. EPoS systems are also proven in delivering savings.
Simply by scanning a barcode and guaranteeing price accuracy you would normally put 1 to 2% on gross profit immediately, because ultimately people forget prices, labels fall off or staff tend to estimate things. Systems have got clever now; they understand that if you replenish something then you might replenish it at a different price so it will re-average your margin. It
is what is called a weighted cost price averaging solution, allowing you to know exactly what your average margin is so you can look at your pricing. Many retailers report an average turnover of 10% simply from turning to an EPoS system, whilst stock holding can be slashed by as much as 30%, vastly improving cash flow. ■

BUSINESS MATTERS
Promoting from within Marketing and PR have significant roles to play in promoting a business. Mark Lumsdon-Taylor takes a look at how the two practices differ and can be applied effectively to promote a company’s brand.
I
t is surprising how many people think that public relations and marketing are the same. They aren’t, and when they are operated as an entity, generally speaking, the results are less successful. The best setup is when they operate separately but liaise, exchange ideas, don’t perceive themselves in competition with each other and cooperate fully.
Dictionary definitions ‘Marketing’ is defined by Dr Philip Kotler as: “the science and art of exploring, creating and delivering value to satisfy the needs of the target market at a profit.” The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) defines it as ‘…the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably’. The definitions are similar, but the differences are important. I especially like the inclusion of the word ‘anticipating’ in the second definition. The development of a successful business strategy directly relates to being able to anticipate! The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) defines PR as ‘…the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics’. ‘Reputation’ being the essential ingredient, PR makes the most of the good stories and undertakes damage limitation exercises for the less good! It’s worth highlighting the use of the phrase ‘sustained efforts’ as a one-off, drop in the ocean is a total waste of resources. ‘Persistent’, ‘innovative’, ‘inspired’ and ‘maintained’ are all useful defining terms. It’s a fact that a well-marketed poor product can be staggeringly successful – whereas a poorly-
40

marketed good product can fail! It’s a fact that a business or firm can be very professional and have impeccable integrity but still not acquire that all-important reputation. And never underestimate the importance of ‘profile’ in relation to the business and that of the individuals representing that business.
Prepare to succeed More often than not sole traders and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) carry out marketing and PR on the
Equestrian Business Monthly | June 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
hoof. Individuals in SMEs often have a natural aptitude underpinned by knowing their clients well. Understanding what is wanted and exactly when; comprehending the business focus, the aspirations and the ability to deliver are all fundamental. ‘Mutual trust’ and ‘mutual respect’ are the essential ingredients and the relationship can work very well. But there comes a point when the small business needs to move forward, to expand its product or range of services and to develop new markets.
In anticipation of reaching that point, astute proprietors and managers will be planning a coordinated marketing and PR campaign well in advance. Whether a small business or a multi-million pound organisation, marketing and PR are essential to profitability and growth. And ‘growth’ without related ‘profitability’ may be good for the ego but it increases work overload and stress whilst doing nothing for the all-important bottom line. One of the problems for most managers is ‘budget’. Relatively
BUSINESS MATTERS straightforward to calculate in relation to marketing, but much more difficult to estimate in relation to PR which must have the flexibility needed to respond to sudden opportunities and one-off situations.
Media savvy PR is essentially related to the media and the media expects instant attention. (It is an interesting fact that the higher up in an organisation – right up to chairman and CEO levels – the quicker the individual tends to respond to requests for interviews, whether they relate to television, radio or printed matter.) The media is quick to note who they can depend on for a fast, reliable response – and who is ‘too busy’, ‘too arrogant’ – and far too unaware. Used cleverly and with discretion – and I would say appreciation – PR builds bridges, creates relationships, forges bonds, reaches the right people, cements reputations…and helps to sell the goods or services! Marketing is sometimes described as ‘selling’ and that is not a bad definition – albeit a very simplistic one. Marketing includes (but is definitely not exclusive to) advertising. The breadth of opportunities for advertising grow exponentially and it is fundamental to the marketer’s job to analyse what works best for the business – and why. Marketing also includes trade shows, sponsorship deals, special promotions, market research, product endorsement, product development, initiation of events – and much more. Marketing departments – especially in smaller organisations – are
also often responsible for generating all sales-related literature, show stands, popups, posters, giveaways, direct mail – and a great deal more. Good PR and marketing are essential tools for all businesses right down to the sole trader and right up to the multinational – it is only the scope that varies in size. The best organised campaigns produce costeffective results – the worst are an ego-tripping diversion. ■
Smooth media interactions can help elevate a company’s profile
