No sooner had the Grand National come and gone, with even its most hardened cynics assenting to its safety this year, than racing has been hit with one of the biggest doping scandals in recent times. Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni has been banned from racing for eight years as a result of the scandal involving one of the world’s leading racing operations and the British Horse Racing Authority (BHA) has also banned 15 horses trained by Al Zarooni for six months.
T
here is some good news, in that Bookmaker Ladbrokes has said it will refund advance bets totalling £200,000 that had been placed on the 11 horses. Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Given the circumstances we feel it’s only fair customers get their money back.” Commenting on the Grand National, World Horse Welfare (WHW) welcomed the results, but says there is still a need to reduce the number of runners. Chief executive Roly Owers said: “This race was exciting and will be remembered for all the right reasons. We’re very pleased that all the horses and riders returned safely. World Horse Welfare’s number one concern with the Grand National was the numbers of fallers. We are very pleased that only two horses fell, and while some unseated their riders, none were brought down by other horses. This had been a problem for almost 50% of the field over the past few years. In this race it amounted to 20% of the field, which is a great step forward. Aintree can take considerable credit for the improvements they have made to the course – especially the most significant changes to the fences in the race’s 160-year history. It is too early to say with certainty whether the softer fences are making a difference, but with fewer falls in the other races held on the National course over the past two days, the initial signs are encouraging. We are also pleased that so many jockeys rode the early part of the race sensibly and later in the race when they made good decisions to pull their horses up rather than pursue the contest. We would still like a trial reduction of the maximum field size to around 30 to further lessen the risk. This race demonstrated we are moving in the right direction, but the risks to horse and rider were still twice that of other national hunt races.”
BEF funds up for grabs
The British Equestrian Federation has launched its 2013-2014 Capital Funding round, providing an opportunity for establishments and clubs to apply for £1 for £1 match funding to upgrade riding establishments, increase capacity and accessibility or improve centre facilities such as changing rooms, toilets and social areas. Bids submitted should be for no less than £1,000 and no more than £25,000, whilst the preferred bid level is between £10,000 and £15,000. Projects awarded funding will need to demonstrate the funded project is able to be completed by March 14 2014. If you are interested in applying for funding, expressions of interest (Stage 1) should be received by the British Equestrian Federation by Friday May 10 2013. All applicants will be notified by Friday May 17 2013 whether their expression of interest has been successful or not. Successful applicants will then be required to submit a full application (Stage 2) by Friday June 14 2013; notification will be given to successful applicants after this second stage by Friday June 28. Application forms and further information can be found at www.bef.co.uk

Dodson & Horrell retained as official supplier
T
he British Equestrian Federation (BEF) has retained leading horse feed manufacturer Dodson & Horrell as the official supplier to Equestrian Team GBR for another four years. First granted the high profile contract in 2009, the contract renewal will see the company offer impartial advice in the run up to next year’s World Equestrian Games (WEG) in France and the Olympics and Paralympic Games in Rio 2016.
A pivotal role will be played by Dodson & Horrell’s team of nutritionists in advising Team GBR squads, team managers, coaches and vets and this extends not just to the Performance Programme but also to the Development Programme, Equine Pathway and more recently the BEF Excel programme. Sam Horrell Marketing Director of Dodson & Horrell said: “We are proud of our involvement with Equestrian Team GBR.

Investigative report
Newmarket’s steroid scandal T
he recent doping exposé at the world famous Godolphin Stables in Newmarket has shattered the clean image that racing endeavours to uphold. Colette Armitage investiagates. Godolphin trainer Al Zarooni is now at the heart of one of the biggest doping scandals racing has ever seen, after banned substances were found in 11 out of 45 horses in his charge. Al Zarooni’s described it as a ‘catastrophic mistake’ and has apologised for the ‘damage’ that he has caused to the Godolphin Stud and the sport of horse racing. Muhammad Al Zarooni’s poor excuse for this mistake was that he naively believed the horses could be given the drugs because they weren’t racing at the time. But this isn’t Al Zarooni’s first blunder; in August 2012 he was finned over £2000 for giving a horse a banned pain reliving drug. Obviously it isn’t anywhere near the magnitude of this positive drugs test but you would have thought he had read the rule book by now. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed,
8
ruler of Dubai and owner of the legendary Godolphin stables, is rumoured to be absolutely appalled by the news and racing manager Crisford says, “Sheikh Mohammed has instructed me to begin an urgent review of all of our procedures and controls,” but have these measures come too little, too late? Substances found included ethylestrenol and stanozolol, both of which are anabolic steroids. The administration of these drugs can have a dramatic impact on a horse’s performance which race horse trainer James Given confirms, “It is, without doubt, a performance-enhancing substance, and an unfair advantage is sought by using these drugs.” Not only can the drugs enhance performance whilst in the horse’s system but the long term effects can increase muscle development beyond the natural capacities and decrease recovery time from injury. Two of the horses tested positive for the drugs include winner of the Shadwell Fillies’ mile, Certify and Royal Ascot Gold Cup runner up, Opinion Poll. These
Equestrian Business Monthly | May 2013 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
two horses alone have combined winnings worth £1,925,904, as well as the other 9 horses tallying a high six figure number. Certify is an unbeaten champion and was due to run in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 5, but was suspended. What makes this news so shocking is that Al Zarooni is a hugely successful trainer; who has won countless races including the world’s richest race the Dubai World Cup in March 2012 and has won two British Classics. Understandably the National Trainers Association (NTA) is ‘shocked’ at the news and Chief Executive Rupert Arnold was quick to add that it appears to be an isolated case and is in no way reflective of the racing community as a whole. The NTA added, “Without wanting to diminish the seriousness of this case, in some ways it is a positive message that the presence of these substances was detected so the sport is kept clean.” It is well-known throughout the racing community that Sheikh Mohammed is a great advocate of a hands on approach to managing
one of his most powerful yards, Godolphin. All horses spend the winter in Dubai which is a consequence of the Sheikh’s desire to be with his horses when he is busy with political work. It is also known that any decision made has gone through the Sheikh himself; from purchases to the hiring and firing. This colossal error in communications will be embarrassing for the Sheikh, since his management system is set up to avoid disasters such as this. It is no surprise then that the Sheikh has stepped up his ‘procedures and controls’. This scandal comes soon after the recent discovery that legendary jockey, who rode for the Sheikh for 18 years, Frankie Dettori, tested positive for a banned substance, believed to be cocaine, in France last year. Plentiful press coverage on scandalous behaviour in the world of horse racing is nothing new. However, with such high profile cases being the subject of the biggest and most shameful ridicule; the respectful exterior of the Godolphin stables will undoubtedly be tainted.

Allergies and Intolerances
Something
HE ATE?
Allergy or intolerance, what’s the difference? Jane Buchan of Baileys Horse Feeds explains the types of allergies and intolerances that can occur and the process of identifying the cause and the steps horse owners can take to alleviate them.
O
ften when a reaction occurs, we tend to label it as an allergy, however feed allergies in horses are relatively rare, whereas intolerances to specific ingredients appear to be far more common. There is an increasing awareness of the possibility of allergies or intolerances to feeds or feed ingredients, among horses, but just how prevalent are they?
Allergies We’re all aware of the dramatic and potentially drastic reaction that the human body can have to certain foods but true feed allergies in horses are relatively rare. Allergies involve the stimulation of the immune system to react excessively against a certain protein or proteinlike molecule (allergen) which would not normally happen in the non-allergic horse. This reaction results in the release of histamines, which, when produced to excess, cause symptoms which may vary from sneezing and wheezing, to itching, swelling,
10
hives (lumps on the skin) or diarrhoea. The symptoms of feed allergies can include swelling of the lips and mouth but are more commonly seen as diarrhoea and/ or hives, although symptoms alone are not necessarily indicative of an allergic reaction to something the horse ate. Allergies can be hard to diagnose and in severe cases, a vet may carry out blood and skin tests with varying degrees of success.
Intolerances A more common occurrences are hyper-sensitive reactions to substances which do not involve the immune system and these tend to be referred to as intolerances. They can result in many and varied symptoms, which may not necessarily, in the first instance, be attributable to a feed-related issue and as such can be equally hard to diagnose. Indeed, it is only in recent years that intolerances to feeds or feed ingredients have become recognised, so although there is a perception that they are becoming increasingly prevalent
Equestrian Business Monthly | May 2013 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
among equines, it’s more likely that we are simply more aware of their existence. Symptoms of a feed intolerance can include, ‘crabby’ or ‘jumpy’ behaviour, hives, dry itchy skin, loose droppings or a tendency to colic, all of which can also be the result of environmental and management issues. Any horse which is uncomfortable in its gut, for example, is likely to be crabby, unsettled and prone to colic so eliminating everything which could be causing this can help settle the situation. Stress is a primary factor in gut discomfort and this can have innumerable causes from insufficient turnout or bullying in the field, to travelling, competing, overzealous training - the list goes on.
Stress One common consequence of a ‘stressed-out’ equine is EGUS (Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome) as a result of acid attacking the lining of the horse’s stomach. Any horse prone to ulcers or any digestive discomfort MUST
have constant access to forage and the starch content of any supplementary feed should preferably be kept to a minimum. The simple provision of ad lib forage can help reduce stress levels by satisfying a horse’s physiological need to chew and ensures there is always some food in the stomach to stop the digestive acid reaching areas it shouldn’t. A constant flow of fibre through the digestive system also ensures that any gases which are produced during digestion are carried through thus avoiding a build-up which could cause colic. Fibre from forage is also essential to maintain a healthy population of gut bacteria, which are also instrumental in its digestion and any imbalance can not only affect digestive efficiency but gut pH (acidity) and symptoms of an imbalance can include loose droppings, diarrhoea or colic.
Digestive enhancers Any horse with loose droppings, whether continuously or during times of stress, would benefit from a digestive enhancer like a pro or prebiotic. Probiotics contain live bacteria and can be fed to replenish gut bacteria populations, which may have been depleted, whilst prebiotics support the existing populations of beneficial
Allergies and Intolerances bacteria and help them flourish. They may either act as a food source which only good bacteria can utilise or by disabling pathogenic bacteria and facilitating their removal. In severe cases it can be worth feeding a course of a probiotic followed by a prebiotic which can then be fed daily or just during times of stress to help maintain a healthy bacterial balance, supporting gut efficiency and helping alleviate loose droppings and discomfort.
Itching Scurfy or itchy skin can be a sign of a dietary imbalance and a look at the overall balance of the diet should always be taken before turning to supplements or special feeds in an attempt to alleviate specific symptoms. A fully balanced diet, supplying correct levels of essential vitamins and minerals and quality protein, helps support health and well-
being, of which visual signs will include, strong healthy hooves and a shiny coat. Omega 3 oils are also essential for soft supple skin and may be found in a good quality feed or balancer or can be added to a fully balanced diet in the form of a high oil supplement or straight vegetable oil.
Elimination diets Feeding the recommended
amount of a compound feed or balancer alongside forage will ensure the diet is supplying all the nutrients a horse needs for well-being and to support its work. Should problems persist and remain unexplained, then a feed intolerance is possible, but the only way to find out what is causing the reaction is to put the horse on an elimination diet. While this can be difficult for the hard-working horse or poor-doer, it may be the only
option and involves cutting out all supplementary feeds and giving just ad lib forage for a minimum of four weeks. By this time, unless the cause is within the pasture or forage, symptoms should have subsided and other feed ingredients can be reintroduced one by one until a problem recurs that can be attributable to what has been added to diet. A vet or feed company nutritionist can help plan the process and discuss feeds or feed ingredients which you can add separately to aid in the identification of the culprit. It’s entirely possible that the problem is contained within the horse’s grass, hay or haylage but this should become apparent if problems persist despite the elimination of the usual suspects in compound feed.
Special feeds Since elimination diets can be both time consuming and
May 2013 | Equestrian Business Monthly www.ebmonthly.co.uk
11
Allergies and Intolerances complicated to implement, there’s an increasing tendency to assume, not only that an intolerance exists but also that it is due to one or more of a number of commonly implicated ingredients. Feeds are available which avoid these ingredients so offer a potential ‘quick fix’ meaning that neither the specific cause nor any environmental implications are ever addressed. Should an elimination diet result in the recognition of a reaction to a specific ingredient, then such feeds can prove useful in re-establishing a fully balanced diet while avoiding intolerance reactions. Feed ingredients which have been identified as causing hypersensitive reactions include certain cereals, alfalfa and molasses. If a horse is truly allergic to any of these, it is a protein which they contain that will be the actual allergen; oils, starch, cellulose or sugars are not allergens and cannot cause an allergic response.
Bad press Indeed, sugar often receives bad press which is unwarranted since it is both an essential nutrient and a natural component of the horse’s diet because grass has a high sugar content. Feeds which contain molasses are often perceived to be ‘high sugar’ but not only is molasses not 100% sugar (it’s what’s left after the sugar has been extracted, after all) but it is used in feeds at an inclusion rate of less than 5%, so the actual amount of sugar it contributes to a horse’s diet is minimal. So, while there’s no doubt that horse’s can be allergic or intolerant to something in their diets, there are other factors to consider when presented with potential symptoms. Contrary to popular perception too, modern compound feeds from reputable manufacturers contain carefully prepared natural ingredients and are backed by meticulous research to ensure that they provide the very best and safest nutrition for the horse.

Sensitive equines
Approved by The Laminitis Trust, Speedi-Beet from British Horse Feeds is high in fibre and low in starch and sugar. A sugar beet pulp with no added molasses, it has been subjected to a patented cooking process to produce a superb complementary feed for horses that suffer with a sugar/starch intolerance. Speedi-Beet is quick soaking and ready for use in ten minutes. Small amounts may be fed to overweight horses as a carrier for supplements, or larger quantities to a poor doer for weight gain.
Many horse owners feel their animals demonstrate intolerance to various feed ingredients, most commonly barley and molasses. Equine Sensitive has been deliberately formulated to minimise/eliminate intolerances. It is both barley and molasses-free. Furthermore it is low in starch and has no added sugar. Rice is commonly used in diets where it is necessary to avoid adverse reactions to diet and thus it is used as the preferred source of energy in Equine Sensitive together with oil. Antioxidants are routinely included for their protective effect against free radicals.

Beneficial balancers
Allen & Page, which recently scooped the Haygain Nutritional Helpline of the Year award at BETA International 2013 has long been at the forefront of feed development and is well-known for producing high quality feeds suitable for horses with dietary problems and intolerances to certain feed ingredients. The company was one of the first to launch an ‘intolerance diet’, with benefits seen across the board, leading to the development of the popular Barley & Molasses Free Range as it is today.
While underfeeding a low energy mix, cube or fibre feed will always cost less than feeding a fully balanced diet, Baileys LoCal and Performance Balancers represent cost effective, straight forward feeding solutions for horses who need little or no ‘traditional’ hard feed. Their scientific formulations ensure that a little goes a long way for horse owners on a budget. For the horse, the benefits of maintaining a balanced diet all year round are many, for the retailer it can help ensure consistent sales and happy customers.

Pure performance
Molasses free
Re-Leve is a high-performance mix, specifically designed to replace all cereal and hard feed for horses in work that have a nervous disposition, or react adversely to high starch levels. A performance ration, it is based on extensive collaborative research carried out by Dr Stephanie Valberg, at the University of Minnesota, and Kentucky Equine Research in Lexington. It provides the levels of energy required for performance using a variety of alternative energy sources to cereals. Highly fermentable fibres and high oil levels reduce the reliance on starch.
Alfa-A Molasses Free combines chopped and pelleted alfalfa with a light soya oil coating and added herbs. Naturally low in sugar and starch, Alfa-A Molasses Free contains no added sugar and is molasses and preservative free. It is suitable for horses and ponies in work, those in lower levels of work that struggle to maintain condition and horses and ponies that require a low sugar and starch ration. Although alfalfa is abundant in natural nutrients a source of broad-spectrum vitamins and minerals should be added alongside to ensure a balanced diet.

How Do Wholesalers Work?
Delivering
GOOD SERVICE
Most equestrian outlets will use a wholesaler on a regular basis but have you ever considered how they function or given thought to the kind of support they can offer? Equestrian Business Monthly went behind the scenes at one of the longest established equestrian distributors, Westgate EFI to look at the main players within their business.
I
n any retail industry, the wholesaler or distributor plays an important role, being able to deliver a wide range of products in quantities to suit the individual business whilst reducing the number of accounts needed to function and manage stock efficiently. Such companies can also provide an efficient route to market for the manufacturer, with shops being able to trial new lines in small quantities, rather than being deterred by substantial minimum orders. While the company’s trade list or website can provide product information, the good distributor offers a range of back-up services for its customers. Using Westgate EFI as an example and looking at the layers of sales support available, it is apparent that retailers should be able to work well with their supplier for the benefit of their business – all it takes is a little communication. Tracey Woods, Sales and Product Manager Communication plays a vital role in ensuring that the customer is happy and that we are in tune with their business needs. WEFI has always recognised the importance of customer relationships and find that, even in this technological age, most people still like personal contact. Top Tip: Technology is progressing but many in the equestrian trade still cherish traditional business practices. Let your supplier know how you like to work and your preferred methods of communication.

Consequently, we have introduced online ordering and our systems are also being developed to be compatible with the more technologically capable customers. Tina Farrow, National Sales Manager Our area managers spend their working lives on the road visiting retailers but it’s not just about showing customers new products. faced with the end-user who is asking for advice or struggling to decide which product they should buy. Just understanding basic features, such as whether a garment is made from technical waterproof fabric or is simply water resistant, can help to ensure that your customers make a purchase that fulfils their needs and expectations. Ask for the reps’ opinion on products and talk to them about ideas for running special promotions. Make sure they understand the level of support you require but give them sufficient notice if you need someone to attend an open day or make a call so that they can work it into their travel plans. We look to build long term relationships with our customers, offering ongoing support, help and advice. It’s in our interests to help them grow as a business if we can – if they’re successful, then we’re successful. Sue Doyle, Sales Support Manager Customer service or telesales staff are only a phone call away. At WEFI we take orders, answer questions and work to resolve any issues or concerns our customers
may have. Our team works to fit in with our retail outlets regardless of size and however they wish to operate - we still receive orders by post and fax as well as via the telephone or over the internet. The sales office should mirror the work carried out by the reps and has the advantage of being easily accessible at any time. Many of our staff are experienced equestrians which is a real advantage when handling customer queries, especially on practical matters – and if we can’t answer the question immediately, we’ll soon find the answer. From the smallest customer to the biggest superstore, there is somebody that can take care of your account. If you deal with wholesalers on a regular basis we’re interested in hearing from you. Whatever your experience, good or bad, put your opinions and questions forwards, so that we can share them with other readers and get your queries answered by wholesalers serving the equestrian trade. Top Tip: In today’s market it pays to be ahead of the game, so talk to your supplier about special offers and promotions that could help build your business. Consider stocking new and innovative products, learn about their USPs and ask for POS material – we carry a good supply on behalf of our suppliers. Email editorial@ebmonthly with your comments.

or retailers, targeted summer stocking is vital. Good management by the horse owner, coupled with correct selection of available products in conjunction with sound retailer advice can prevent seasonal hazards from becoming a major health problem.
Electrolytes
Successful
Seasonal Supplements The majority of horse owners use their horses more actively, either competing or hacking, during spring and summer, which may reveal health and behaviour problems that do not occur when in lighter work. We look at types of supplement that may become useful as the competition season rolls out and more horses undergo regular work. 18
Equestrian Business Monthly | May 2013 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
Many horse owners may think their horse or pony does not requires an electrolyte supplement because they are not working particularly hard and the climate in the UK does not generate temperatures to warrant its use. In many cases this may be true and feeding an excess or unrequired amount is both unhealthy and wasteful, as the body will excrete the excess. However a diet low in electrolyte is also common and often an undiagnosed cause of horses not performing to expectations, thus suffering from fatigue and muscle weakness After water, electrolytes are one of the most abundant compounds in the body. The major electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium. Not all the electrolytes consumed by the horse will be absorbed, but there is probably 90% or more absorption for sodium, potassium and chloride. When it comes to hydration, sodium is the most important electrolyte and although all compound feeds contain some electrolytes, these feeds combined with grass and hay will only supply adequate amounts for horses at pasture or in light work and will always be deficient in sodium. Horses at rest lose electrolytes on a daily basis in faeces, urine and breath. Larger amounts of electrolytes are lost during exercise through sweating; the more work and the hotter the horse gets the more electrolytes it will lose. A horse can easily lose five litres of sweat each hour on a normal day at a moderate pace, which equates to about 50g of electrolytes, which would not be replaced by daily feeding of hay and hard feed alone. By supplementing horses in regular work with electrolytes, they will be able to perform better and avoid problems such as poor performance or digestive disturbance and some forms or tying up. Even if a horse drinks water sufficiently when outside, it may do not do so when stabled or

Supplements away form home. Water cannot be held in the body and the kidneys will try to remove as much of the extra water as possible. When water is taken in with electrolytes (in feed or by syringe or dissolved in the water), the water can be held in the body and the horse rehydrated. Feeding electrolytes at the correct level is all important to their efficacy. The horse can store electrolytes, but not when given to excess, or when an extra amount is added to the normal allocation. When this occurs they just drink more and the kidneys excrete the excess. The correct feeding regime is to build up to the required level over a long period of time and the body will adjust to storing the higher level. It is not uncommon for supplemental electrolytes only to be fed just before and during a competition. Fed in this way, the balance of the body is upset and it can take months rather than days to fully restore the body’s normal electrolyte levels. The simple answer for the competing horse owner is that electrolytes should be fed as part of their feeding regime everyday throughout training and during competition, building the level over a period of time in accordance with the level of work required and the weather. Horses in more than light work do still require supplemental electrolytes and again the outside temperature should be factored in and almost all horses need a small amount of salt on a daily basis.
disease. Probiotics stick to the wall of the gut and form colonies at various sites. This prevents the pathogenic bacteria from gaining a foothold resulting in their expulsion from the body and helping the overall health of the horse. By restoring the balance of the microflora in the gut, a probiotic aids in promoting effective health, recovery and performance. It will promote efficient digestion and ensures the optimum use of the feed. Probiotic use has been shown to increase the digestibility of essential minerals such as calcium and zinc and elements of the micoflora are responsible for the production and bioavailability of B Group vitamins. The delicate balance of the micoflora within the gut can easily be disturbed by stresses such as competition, travel and diet changes. Feeding a probiotic ensures that if an imbalance occurs and the gut disturbed, friendly bacteria are available to recolonize the gut wall and reestablish a stable environment. Antibiotic therapy, worming and illness can cause disruption to the gut microflora leading to scouring and invasion of the gut by pathogens, an agent that may cause disease. Some organisms present in probiotics produce natural anti-microbial products capable of inhibiting their reproduction. Regular use of a probiotic will maintain a healthy micoflora in the horse’s gut and improve general health, appearance, performance and temperament. Efficient hind gut fermentation can help to reduce the incidence of laminitis, azotoria, colic and other digestive disturbances.
Probiotics A probiotic is a supplement added to the horse’s diet, which contains live beneficial microorganisms that optimise microbial health within the horse’s gut. They have been shown to increase the efficiency of digestion, increase the levels of immunity and the effectiveness of infection fighting white blood cells. A probiotic should have no nutritional or energy value so it can be combined with any diet The horse’s digestive system has evolved to process large quantities of high fibre forage on an almost continuous basis. Due to the requirements of competition and modern management the horse often has to utilise a high-energy diet. To break this down into digestible products, there are billions of microorganisms, which live in the gut. They produce

enzymes that convert food into its basic constituents which can then be readily absorbed through the gut wall. A probiotic should contain up to seven strains of naturally occurring microorganisms and yeast, chosen specifically to survive the acidity of the stomach and for their ability to multiply rapidly, colonise the gut and replace micoflora which has been removed through stress and illness.
Equestrian Business Monthly | May 2013 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
Within the gut wall, beneficial as well as pathogenic microorganisms, will be utilising the same types of nutrients. The result is a competition between the microorganisms for these nutrients. When a probiotic is administered there is an overall reduction in nutrients available to the pathogenic bacteria and consequently this minimises the levels of pathogenic microorganisms which can cause
There are many reasons why a horse may be lethargic, lack performance or quickly tire. The professional sport’s horse of today is expected to perform at peak fitness for long periods. They are achieving faster and better performance levels than ever before and travel all over the world to do so. Performance boosters are given in paste or liquid form as a rule and are designed to replenish the horse after effort to re-balance the body. “My 11 year old Fell pony has suffered with itchy skin every year, particularly around his face and mane. How does Think Itch work and when is the best time to introduce it to his diet?”
Aimee says...
“The principle behind Think Itch is to help deter biting midges whilst soothing skin reactions. It incorporates our Think Fly formula together with key nutrients, such as high levels of niacin and linseed oil to effectively support the horse through midge attack. I advise that you introduce your pony to our Think Itch a month prior to and throughout the months when midges are more prevalent to help build and maintain an effective level.” For more health and nutrition advice contact the EquiClinic on

provided for it to do so, however there is no substitute for good nutrition. A horse is a simple, single stomached, fibre eating animal. This means that first and foremost we should be providing the best quality fibre, topping it up with important minerals, vitamins and trace elements. We should always try to keep the hard feed to a minimum to avoid digestive upsets. The performance horse, with greater demands being placed on it, will require specific nutritional support. Oil is two and half times higher in calorific value than cereal and horses can digest oil quite easily. Oils that contain higher levels of Omega 3 and Omega 6 are particularly beneficial as they have anti-inflammatory characteristics, improve joint health and reduce soreness as well as increasing tissue elasticity, which reduces the incidence of nasal bleeding in performance horses. Iron is lost along with essential

salts when sweating. Iron is vital for health and performance and low iron levels become evident initially through lethargy and lowering of performance leading to anaemia if not addressed. Performance horses in regular work can have reduced B Vitamin levels and a suppressed blood count, which could mean they are again slightly anaemic. B complex vitamins and essential trace minerals iron, copper, cobalt are all necessary for normal red cell production. Creatine is a natural amino acid that helps to build lean muscle and provide more energy and stamina. It is also a useful buffer against the build-up of lactic acid, produced after a large amount of energy is released. L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring nutrient found in animals and plants. It plays a vital role in muscle metabolism during stress and helps to inhibit the build-up of lactic acid in the muscles and delay the onset of

fatigue; it is essential for normal heart function.
Banish the bugs Every season has its downside and with the warmer months of the year and increased riding activity, comes the influx of those pesky and irritating creatures we all know to be flies. Bad news for horse owners, but not for retailers, as the annual plague of biting insects can actually create a prolific and rewarding market for anyone in the equestrian retail industry with a shelf full of seasonal fly supplements. There are many types of licks, supplements and horse feeds that can help repel insects from the inside out, for example, garlic can make a horse smell unattractive to a fly or make the blood taste less sweet. There are even herbal tinctures that can be put into a horse’s feed during biting midge season. However, rows and rows of supplements can look daunting to the customer, so
make sure everything is clearly labelled to help them find what they want. Often customers will ask for a specific brand or product, and in these cases it may be best to group brands together. You may find that people ask your advice on a product to help with a specific problem, so in this case it may be best to stock in sectors, but this rather depends on your store layout. One way to draw attention to supplements is to add them to seasonal displays of other products. Whether in a window or by the till, make sure you include supplements alongside seasonal items like fly repellents, to encourage people to think more broadly about solutions to common problems. Also perhaps draw the customer’s attention to supplements in other sectors: a well-placed shelf edge suggesting a fly repelling supplement next to the fly repellent sprays and fly fringes could direct people to a new area in the shop.

Low sugar licks
PRODUCT
Bye bye bugs
HerbiLIX low sugar licks not only supply nutritious vitamins and minerals, but also a powerful herbal blend: Devon Bank. This puts traditional hedgerow herbs such as nettles, cleavers and dandelion back into the modern horse’s diet, with benefits such as supporting liver function, immune system and circulation. Another benefit of Devon Bank is the delicious aroma and palatability achieved without high levels of molasses and sugar which is perfect for horses who are adversely affected by high sugar levels in the diet. These licks are available as HerbiLIX original and also HerbiLIX airways, which provides additional ingredients such as eucalyptus, menthol and garlic to help settle sensitive respiratory systems.
The Rockies Bug:go! is a high-quality salt lick containing pure garlic, which can help to naturally repel flies during the spring and summer months. The lick is available in 5 kg blocks and contains 10% pure garlic, in addition to salt. To make the lick, the ingredients are compressed in high-pressure presses to ensure longevity and to prevent the lick from crumbling and degrading as some inferior products do. Bug:go! can be used indoors or in a sheltered position outdoors, should be offered in a free access manner, and is ideal during the spring, summer and sweet itch season, to help repel flies and biting insects.

Compose 2x is a pelleted, concentrated equine calming supplement containing nutrient ‘nerve regulators’ including tryptophan, thiamine, and magnesium. Tryptophan, one of the essential amino acids, is a building block of a chemical in the body responsible for the transmission of nerve signals through the brain. Thiamine is important in energy metabolism and helps control hyperactivity. Magnesium is important in maintaining correct nerve transmission and muscle function. For maximum short term effect Compose 2x can be given two hours prior to a planned activity or for long term maintenance Compose 2x can be given twice daily with the horse’s normal ration.
Multi Boost is a general multi-vitamin feed additive for horses of all types. It provides a complete combination of minerals and vitamins to ensure the horse attains its maximum health level. Copper is essential for a horse’s development, particularly in foals and yearlings, whilst anti-oxidants and selenium are vital for combating stress and Iron increases the production of red blood cells and. This iron, copper and multi-vitamin additive tops up the horse’s system with essential vitamins and minerals that may be lacking from the diet and in addition boosts red blood cell production for maximum performance. It also helps to address issues such as low appetite, low stamina and poor condition.

Fly free
Hoof First contains 40mg of biotin per 25g dose, which is double the strength of many other hoof supplements. Combined with a number of other proven growth and healing ingredients it aims to ensure maximum results and satisfaction as Laura Kraut testifies when describing its outcome for her horse Cedric, the lynch pin of the winning Nations Cup team at Wellington. “While competing at the Paris Gucci Masters, Cedric sustained damage to his hoof and coronet band,” explained Laura. “The vets were certain this would take several weeks to heal. However, the use of Hoof First in Cedric’s feed every day, meant that he was back out competing at Olympia just 20 days later.”
Whenever flies are a problem a nutritional approach is often the easiest solution for horse owners. Just as in people some horses get bitten and plagued more than others. This is because they smell or taste less pleasant to flies. To help tackle this problem Global Herbs offers FlyFree, a formula based on extracts from the Cedar tree, which also helps calm sensitive skin while discouraging fly problems. Palatability has recently been improved making this an easy solution for all horse owners.

Complete electrolytes
PRODUCT
Inner balance
Complete Electrolytes is a palatable fully balanced electrolyte that is gentle on the stomach and replaces electrolytes in proportions to which they are lost during exercise. Whilst electrolytes can be added to the feed, horses often find these unpalatable and their granular nature means that it is easy for fussy horses to leave them. Complete Electrolytes is a unique formulation that provides a palatable source of the key electrolytes sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium and helps overcome these potential palatability problems. Containing the five key electrolytes, with MicroBead Technology, it dissolves in the small intestine where electrolyte uptake is optimal and is gentle on the stomach.
Equimins’ Inner Balance Probiotics can be used as a pick me up in times of stress and can also be used to help maintain a healthy and effective gut. They can be fed to foals and horses, added to drinking water or sprinkled onto feed. Highly palatable they ensure intake and contains Lactobacillus Acidophillus and Bifidobacterium, at generous levels, covered with the unique enteric coating to help ensure safe passage through the stomach into the horse’s small intestine. In addition, Inner Balance also contains prebiotics, to help feed the probiotics contained in the supplement. Feeding recommendations vary depending on the size of the horse.

What to stock for Successful Sales
Horse boots Protecting a horse’s legs, whether at work, rest or play, requires a great deal of consideration; a reality borne out by the fact that developments in boots are more widely researched that almost any other area of horse equipment.
N
ew materials with high impact absorption and water repellence are constantly being developed and incorporated in to boots, but the busy horse owner has some very basic needs which must not be overlooked when they cross the threshold of a tack shop to buy a pair or set. ■ ease of application ■ speed of application ■ security once fitted ■ protection and support offered.
Equus Overreach Boots
What to stock? Brushing Boots are the type of boot you will sell most, as they are worn by the majority of horses for all kinds of ridden work. Their purpose is to provide a barrier between the fetlock joints, as many horses rub these together when being ridden, which is known as brushing. Recommend them for customers with young horses, as when they are being schooled or lunged they often cannot get their footsteps in order, and so brush until their movement Sizes: S, M, L, XL Colours: Various

be open fronted or completely closed in depending on whether protection over fences is also required or not. They usually have a protective shield running down the rear of the boot, which is often padded. The list of types you can stock goes on from heel boots, polo boots, shin boots, yorkshire boots, antibrushing rings and skeleton knee pads to boots used for travelling, field and stable. However, one pair of boots you should always have in stock is overreach boots. These are often called ‘bell boots’ due to their shape as they fit over the hoof to protect the bulbs of the heel on the foreleg, from being stuck into by the hind shoe during fast work or jumping. They are usually made of tough rubber and either just simply pull over the hoof, or are fastened by means of buckles, strap and slots or Velcro. Horse boots are now an integral part of horse ownership, used extensively for everyday exercise and schooling. In fact, it would be more unusual to see a horse being ridden without boots than with them, so it pays to have plenty in stock in various sizes, types, styles and materials.

Made from quality UK sourced rubber Equus Overreach Boots have no fastenings but are easy to apply thanks to the elasticity of the rubber. They offer outstanding protection, are durable and suitable for use in all climatic conditions. becomes more rhythmical. They are still made of leather, although these are being superseded by synthetic materials as they are easier to fit, mostly having Velcro fastenings and are easier to keep clean and do not absorb water. In order to offer maximum protection most have a hardened shield on the inside of the leg. Where a horse brushes badly, he may injure himself higher up than normal, which is known as speedicutting. In this case, suggest a customer tries a variation of the normal brushing boot, called a speedicut boot. Another variation on the brushing boot and used for the same purpose, is the Fetlock boot. However, they are shorter than the normal brushing boots and may only cover the joint, hence they are also known as ankle boots. The second most popular type of boot and the one you will be asked for by most customers who showjump is the tendon boot. These are designed to offer support to the tendon while the horse is doing strenuous work, and also offer protection from a horse striking into himself, known as a high overreach. They can

With breathable foam sections that mould to the body, a high wicking, technical mesh lining remains cool and dry, creating an extremely comfortable, lightweight, high impact garment. Three separate technical panels are fastened over the shoulders and there is also a multi-position Velcro waist strap for extra comfort. Manufactured to European Standard EN13158:2009; European Directive (Level 3) it is also BETA Approved: 2009 Level 3. It has a detachable, fully-washable, power stretch outer fabric cover and comes in adults and children’s sizes in high viz yellow and pink and in black and white.
Westgate EFI is the sole UK distributor of a revolutionary bionic glove featured in the television programme Dragon’s Den last autumn, gaining backing from Deborah Meadon and Theo Paphitis. Designed by an American orthopaedic hand surgeon, the gloves improve grip and reduce friction helping to prevent blisters, callouses and hand fatigue. Designed for durability and comfort the unique ergonomic features allow for greater flexibility and dexterity which has proven especially useful for riders with reduced grip. The bionic glove is available in three styles aqua grip, classic and show, all featuring the pre rotated finger design which follows the natural curve of the fingers when flexed.

In a trial (Coles et al 2003) Equimax, the original combination wormer that contains Ivermectin and Praziquantel, demonstrated 99% efficacy against bots and 100% efficacy against tapeworms, making it an excellent choice for the treatment of roundworms, tapeworms and bots.

Mike Potter provides sales & retail on mpotter@talktalk.net training for equestrian retailers. Contact him
O
ne of the advantages of having a very large area as a rep, is that I get to talk to a wide range of retailers. This is useful when it comes to writing my columns as it means I get a broad cross section of opinions and often they are generally the same. One of the big issues most flag up is staff, or rather the problem of getting good staff. I know of one shop which held back expansion plans because they just could not get the right staff; a situation I have come across in other retail sectors, so it’s not just the equestrian world. In particular, shops struggle to get capable young staff. But when you think about it, it’s not that surprising. A shop employs a young girl or even an older person
with no shop experience but lots of horse knowledge and then puts them in the shop to get on with it. After all shop work is easy and customer service is just common sense, isn’t it? Well no not really, especially if you are young and have never done it before. I have made two careers out of customer service and selling, but when I started at seventeen I had no idea and was a typical mono syllabic teenager. Someone had to teach me, and that’s where in my view most retailers go wrong. You cannot expect younger staff to just know how to do it and leave them to get on with it. That may be how some of us have had to learn on occasion but it’s not ideal when you have no life skills to draw on.
SMALL EQUINE BUSINESSES WHO PAYS THE TAX? This month Julie Butler looks at the tax rules when employing self-employed staff.
I
t is well known that many equine businesses are seasonal and have high fluctuations in volumes of work. Such businesses have relied heavily on genuine self-employed subcontractors. However, a recent tribunal case ‘Yetis’ has shown the need to check that such workers are genuinely recorded as selfemployed and paying their own tax, otherwise the tax will be payable by the employer. Yetis v Commissioners for HMRC and Style Superior Windows (TC02410) is an example of a worker who was willing to be self-employed until the tax was due, but who then claimed to have been an employee and was, eventually, found by the First Tier Tribunal to have been employed.
It is this ability to ‘claim to be an employee’ which is a worry. Assessments for three old years were discharged because Mr Yetis was found never to have been self-employed, meaning that his ‘employer’ should have accounted for PAYE and NIC’s. A lack of documentation did not help matters, but Mr Yetis was aware that he, like other salesman engaged by Style, was not treated as an employee and had apparently assured the company that his tax was up to date. The key factor is for equine businesses using the services of a subcontractor is to obtain copy documentation proving not just the self-employed status but that the tax has been paid.
Many younger staff have huge potential but you need to nurture it. I spend most of my free time as an Officer in the Army Cadet Force and have spent twelve years working with teenagers, often from difficult backgrounds. Watching them develop skills, especially confidence and independence, makes it all worthwhile, but with the vast majority you firstly have to point them in the right direction and then teach them the skills they need to acquire. It’s the same with staff in shops. If you want them, especially the younger ones, to develop customer service skills and master lots of product knowledge then you will need to mentor, coach, develop and teach them these skills and any others
they might need. Of course sometimes you might have indeed shown them and still they have not performed, which brings us to the subject of motivation. Unless someone wants to tlearn, all the teaching in the world won’t help, which is why I spend the first third of any sales training I do talking about motivation. The first step to motivating others is leading by example with your own knowledge and enthusiasm. In the end when it comes to staff sometimes you really do reap what you sow, because the thorn in your side comes from the seed you planted, by not showing them the right path in the first place.
The tribunal judge (Mr Sinfield) considered whether the individual was in business on his own account. Style confirmed in evidence that Mr Yetis was obliged to provide personal service at all times, no substitutes would have been permitted and he could not reasonably have worked anywhere but at the location specified by the company at the same time. This made the selfemployed status very doubtful.
employed or self-employed and embrace their duty in this regard. The ‘penalty’ of having to pay all the relevant PAYE and NIC serves as a very good reminder to fulfil obligations, such as ensuring there is a ‘substitute’ clause and so on. The fact that the working arrangement is amicable does not mean the subcontractor is honouring their part of the arrangement.
When discussing the legal principles, Mr Sinfield confirmed that no one test can determine every case and that the ‘in business on your own account’ test is more relevant than control. Any equine business taking on workers should also assess the status of employed or subcontract. They should understand if the role is really
Practical Tip This case demonstrates that the courts can still be somewhat unpredictable in their approach and the weight they will give to different factors. The use of subcontractors can be beneficial for small equine businesses but they must comply with all the various rules on both sides of the transaction, and nothing must be taken for granted. Check those self-employed workers NOW – are you protected?

Ask the expert
Focusing on feed The retail world is increasingly competitive and animal feed sales are no exception, so this month we asked Philippa Gilmour, National Sales Manager of leading animal feed manufacturer Dodson & Horrell, what advice she offers new retailers thinking about stocking the brand and what products she advises them to start with, how the range may vary throughout the year and what materials are available to assist sales?
W
ith the obvious challenges faced in stocking large bags of product, combined with many stores selling similar products, factors including store layout, merchandising and customer service are essential to building customer loyalty and ensuring repeat business. Add to this the huge range of products available from manufacturers like Dodson & Horrell, which produces feed for animals ranging from horses to dogs, ferrets to pot bellied pigs, and birds to rabbits, and the sheer number of decisions to be made can be daunting. Key for retailers is ensuring they are stocking the right mix of products encouraging customers to return again and again. Seasonal stocking Horse feed in particular is hugely seasonal with horses

needing different feed products depending on the time of year. Understanding the different nutritional requirements of a horse from season to season is
“ Understanding the different nutritional requirements of a horse from season to season is essential in helping retailers know which products to stock and when.” essential in helping retailers know which products to stock and when. In winter for example, we recommend ensuring sufficient stock levels of Dodson & Horrell’s Build Up Mix and Cubes, Build & Glow, and Ultimate Balancer, whereas in spring, when there is a higher risk of laminitis, we recommend upping stock levels of products such as Safe & Sound and Leisure Mix. Know your customer base Knowing your customer base is also extremely important and the power of customer research should never be underestimated when it comes to horse feed retailing. All successful retailers have a good understanding of the composition of their customer base in terms of leisure riders or competitive riders, who will be looking for specialist feeds. A higher proportion of leisure riders warrants more emphasis on products like Pasture Mix and Pasture Cubes and at the start of the competition season retailers

should ensure they have plenty of Staypower Cubes and Mix, Competition Cubes and Mix, and Alfafa in stock. Utilise the company’s expertise This is where area managers come in and seeking their advice and in-depth knowledge of their territory can be the key to unlocking vital information about your customer base. Area managers know the area and demographic of the horse population and can therefore advise which product ranges sell and the best lines within those ranges. Dodson & Horrell’s area managers are nutritional experts and trained to advise on feeding all of the animals the company’s products are intended for. In addition, POS, product range brochures and trade offers are provided to enable retailers to build a business with the confidence of the company’s support and back up.

This month we’ve taken a look at a site run by a master saddler with over 20 years experience and in contrast at a state of the art e-commerce site launched just last month.
MULRYAN SADDLEY
SCIENCE SUPPLEMENTS
Launched: February 2013
Launched: April 8, 2013
www.mulryansaddlery.co.uk What’s new about it? Owned by Shane Mulryan, a master saddler of 20 years, Mulryan Saddlery was established in 2004. Modern and visually attractive, Mulryan Saddlery’s website is a very easy to use e-commerce site, with customers commenting that: “the shopping experience and checkout has been easy and straightforward”. The main range sold is the company’s own hand crafted leather, but there is also a large range of rugs and horse boots, a selection of saddles for most disciplines and other branded equestrian products. How will the site benefit the end user? By delivering a ‘traditional saddlery experience.’ The site’s USP is that it offers a handmade bespoke leather range, which caters to all disciplines and also offers all customers the option to have their item customised. There is a dedicated section specifically for the Riding for the Disabled (RDA) with whom the company has a corporate sponsorship.
Locally, Mulryan Saddlery provides a repair and saddle fitting service with a traditional saddlery workshop. This adds to the customer experience as they know that each item is handmade in the traditional sense. Subheader*** Which areas have been especially developed? The whole website has undergone a huge overhaul, upgrading the e-commerce side to Wordpress which enables swift and efficient content management. The handmade range has been expanded and now includes over 80 products. Secret Surfer Use of sepia pictures are unusual and provide a feeling of heritage and satisfaction. The site is easy to use and the social media and interaction is easy to find, interesting and up to date. Customers can easily access the product listings and information. The site offers a good range of products including the bespoke range. The association as an Official Corporate Supplier with the Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is underlined on the site by the RDA Chief Executive.
www.sciencesupplements.co.uk What’s new about it? As well as being a state of the art e-commerce site, the new Science Supplements’ website also features news and advice from professional riders. There is a wealth of articles from a team of expert veterinary surgeons, nutritionists and physiologists covering all the major questions horse owners ask. Some of the data from the company’s clinical and scientific research has also been published on the site which provides a significant insight into how horses’ health and wellbeing can be improved; endeavouring to separate the fact from the fiction when looking at supplements. How will the website benefit the end user? The site has been designed and developed with customers in mind. It is easy to navigate and whatever area is being viewed, be it advice or the product range, it can all be navigated to within one to three clicks, including all the way through to final checkout and secure payments with HSBC.
Which areas have been developed specifically? The overriding factor is that the site is easy to use for all. The company believes that any website should be able to provide the information needed within seconds of a user looking for it and this is exactly what the new site delivers. Secret Surfer The site is slick, professional and visually appealing. Navigating around the site is quick and easy with really good imagery that is relevant to each section. The product information and backup science is clear with plenty of advice on feeding supplements and the content and usage of each product readily available. Further information on each product is clearly accessible leading to informed purchases. There is an easy access stockist list for visitors to the site, which is really useful for those wishing to shop locally.
