Albion joins research conference A
lbion Saddlemakers has confirmed its support for the forthcoming Saddle Research Trust International Conference. The well-known British manufacturer of competition saddles and accessories will be sponsoring the exclusive International Researchers’ Workshop, to be held on November 30 and December 1. This follows the public conference on November 29, which is sponsored by the British Equestrian Federation and World Horse Welfare. The second Saddle Research Trust International Conference is the only event of its kind to be held, worldwide. It will bring together leading veterinary and scientific experts to examine the latest research on saddle-related
equine welfare and performance issues and hear how results of new research affect horses and riders. It’s a unique opportunity for vets, therapists, trainers and riders, as well as horse owners themselves to gain collective access to the knowledge and opinions of internationally renowned experts and to participate in panel debate. Anne Bondi, Saddle Research Trust director says: “We are proud and delighted to have Albion on board as a sponsor. This valuable support will help further the cause of welfare beyond independent commercial interests and product development.” Paul Belton, chairman of Albion Saddlemakers continues: “As a saddle manufacturer, we believe in investing in our industry and are therefore delighted to sponsor
the 2014 SRT Research Workshop. The increased knowledge and research will raise awareness worldwide, assisting in the future development of saddle fit, design, innovation and construction. Albion supports some of the world’s leading riders and trainers and we feel such a gathering of information will be very influential and will have a most positive benefit to our key partner – the horse.” The Saddle Research Trust International Conference will be held in Cambridge on November 29 at Anglia Ruskin University. Advance tickets are £100 or £150 on the door. Concessions are available. To find out more, buy tickets and to download a copy of the programme visit www. saddleresearchtrust.com.
Spoga horse springs heats up
T
here is already a high level of exhibitor registrations for spoga horse spring, which takes place in Cologne on February 8-10 2015. After expiry of the first early bird period, over 1200 registrations from exhibitors from 17 countries have been received for the trade fair, including many key international and national accounts such as Ariat, Cavallo, Pikeur, Mountain Horse, Uvex and Carr & Day & Martin. Spoga horse spring is regarded as a key industry platform and the success of the event is not only reflected by the current number of
registrations, but is also expressly confirmed by the BSI. The survey carried out among BSI members confirms the position of spoga horse spring as an excellent order platform and as a comprehensive trend trade fair. Preparations for the supporting programmes of the coming event are currently entering a busy phase and there are only a few slots still available for the fashion walk, which premiered this year and proved to be a crowd-puller. This year’s academy format will be repeated for 2015 with a full schedule of interesting and informative talks already planned. Further information on attending spoga horse spring 2015 is available at www.spogahorse.com

orses are sensitive souls and for many, winter brings on the problem of sore or infected skin. Heather Giles from Hilton Herbs provides a reminder on the most common skin conditions that customers will require help to manage: “Mud fever and rain scald are common winter ailments, both caused the Dermophilius congolensis bacterium penetrating skin weakened by prolonged wetting. These conditions typically affect animals turned out in wet muddy conditions or those with pink skin or heavy feathering. Symptoms of mud fever are sore weepy scabs which, if left untreated, often results in a secondary Staphylococcus infection causing filling of the affected leg(s) and sometimes even low-grade lameness. “Symptoms of rain scald appear as what appears to be dried matted clumps of hair typically on the hind-quarters and belly. Closer inspection will reveal small weepy scabs underneath each clump and severe cases can result in large areas of complete hair loss. Rain scald often affects animals with thick coats, particularly those that are rugged, as this generates a moist warm anaerobic environment in which D. congolensis thrives. Prevention is easy – in principle – affected animals should be removed from the environment causing the condition, however in practice with UK winters becoming wetter and milder the reality is very different. Prevention can be helped by keeping daily hosing of horses’ legs to a minimum and removing mud by brushing rather than washing if possible. Bringing susceptible animals in if only just for a few hours to allow them to dry out, and not rugging

Winter ailments un-clipped horses and ponies, particularly natives, is important.”
product selection UK winters are remarkably unpredictable. Although in general they are getting wetter and milder, each year it seems like it throws out something unique. Last year was exceptionally mild, in other years we have early spring snow storms, this year was an ‘Indian summer’ – but how does this affect sales of winter-specific products? David Willey, managing director of Equimins answers: “A delayed winter does mean that seasonal products are slower to sell at the start of the season, but it also provides a good opportunity to get ahead and make sure that you have sufficient stock for when people come in with an issue that they need help with. It’s essential to have a good range of suitable products available in store as winter related skin issues do require prompt treatment to help reduce the likelihood of the condition deteriorating. If you don’t stock the product, the chances are that your customer will find it online easily…they’d rather have it there and then, but if you’re not providing that option, they don’t have that much choice!” Protecting sensitive areas of skin is key to controlling these bacterial skin conditions and barrier creams can be useful to
of us now keep our horses today. Domesticated horses are usually kept in paddocks. Over the winter these quickly become cut up, especially as most modern horses are shod. High foot-fall areas will quickly become poached, such as gates and around water troughs. This means that horses are not able to avoid mud and sodden conditions. “Native breeds have thick coats designed to protect the skin from adverse weather and mud. However these breeds are now a minority and we have mainly bred today’s horses for their athletic attributes. This means that they are usually fine skinned with thin coats that give little protection. These factors combine to make our domesticated horses much more prone to skin conditions than wild horses.”
joints “Arthritis is the most common cause of lameness in all types of horses,” says Becky Lees. “Arthritis most commonly affects older horses, as they have had the greatest opportunity for wear and tear or injury over time. However, younger horses can also be affected. “Research has shown that joint supplements are beneficial in horses that may incur mild joint sprains, with the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin
“If you don’t stock the product, the chances are that you customer will find it online easily” protect skin from mud fever, but can be messy to apply. Nettex veterinary technical manager Becky Lees says that the next generation of protection from mud are barrier sprays: “This prevents mud sticking to the coat allowing quick removal of soil by simple brushing,” she explains. You would think that horses are designed to live outdoors – after all in their wild state they can live in all sorts of almost inhospitable places, but selective breeding has left some horses ill-prepared for poor weather as Becky explains: “Wild horses are able to roam over vast areas. This means that in harsh winter weather they are able to seek out natural shelter and areas to rest that have freedraining dry soil. This bears very little resemblance to how most
10
Equestrian Business | November 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
being most effective. Look for supplements also containing hyaluronic acid (HA), a major component of joint fluid which acts to protect joints and inhibit damaging enzymes. MSM is also highly valuable as it contains a bioavailable form of sulphur, which is essential for building new cartilage. It also helps soothe knocks, bumps and bruises. Joints have key requirements for manganese, copper and zinc, plus vitamins C and E.” Han Van De Brakk, managing director of Aloeride says there simply isn’t one ingredient that ticks that box. “A foal grows its healthy joints thanks to an abundance of different amino acids as well as many micronutrients. If you wish to promote joint health it would
be wise to optimise the horse’s uptakes of such nutrients in abundance before venturing into the grey area of ‘joint supplements’. Nature doesn’t do short cuts.” Hans recommends products that help the horse to make the most of digestion to tackle winter issues: “Pretty much all of the winter ailments occur because the reduction in nutrients disables the horse to fuel all its defence systems. Customers wander from brand to brand if positive impact fails to materialise but what often is overlooked is that digestion may be compromised and then the uptake of nutrients isn’t as big. So the focus should be on supporting the digestion and only then look to supplements or balancers. Or of course use a supplement that does both.” Managing a horse with joint problems, or preventing them occurring in the first place, is really about correct care, says Heather Giles: “Many of the key ingredients for optimising joint health are not expensive or complicated! They include managing bodyweight correctly, particularly in young animals, regular exercise adapted for the individual’s age and occupation, correct supplementation with vitamins and minerals, again particularly with regard to young animals, and minimising the time spent standing in a stable.” There are many joint supplements that you could stock and all offer various combinations of active ingredients but customers need to consider the active ingredients and amount of the supplement required per day to work out how cost effective each supplement is for them. David Willey points out: “It’s not just the ingredients that are included, it’s important to look at the levels that ingredients are included at. For the customer, this also works through to how much supplement they feed per day and the cost per day. Comparing the levels of key ingredients in supplements is certainly eye opening, and we have customers who are genuinely amazed at the difference! If you’re selling any product, you should do your research – why is it a good example of its type? Does it offer good value for money? Does it have high levels of important ingredients? Does it have a money back guarantee? There’s so much more to supplement sales and consumers are becoming more savvy all the time.”

IV Horse MFP is a tried and tested formula to keep mud fever at bay. Retailing at £8.25 it’s a staple stock item. Sister product Original Multiwash retails at £6.25, both with over 60% mark up. On dirty legs IV Horse recommends washing the legs down with Multiwash and after drying overnight, apply MFP liberally on the affected areas before turn out.
Muddy conditions expose the hoof capsule to excessive moisture leading to a softened and weaker hoof wall, sole, and frog. These conditions also predispose the hooves to invasions of the ‘hoof eating’ microbes associated with thrush, white line disease and crumbling hoof wall. Farrier’s Finish is a liquid topical hoof dressing that destroys ‘hoof eating’ microbes while maintaining correct hoof capsule moisture balance. Unlike other products, it does not contain harmful petroleum derived ingredients.

Licks, treats & toys
Tongue twisters
Licks and toys help to promote natural feeding behaviour, whilst treats can be a training aid or just a simple reward. Both can boost sales in the feed sector and with judicious use of point of sale and prime stock positioning can be an excellent seller, especially at this time of year when gifts are the top of everyone’s list.
L
icks and toys in particular are a market that coincides with the growth in more natural fibre feeding techniques now promoted by most equine nutritionists and experts. As a reminder, this is the method of feeding which as close as possible mimics the horse’s natural grazing behaviour, either by increasing grazing or feeding forage and high fibre alternatives to ensure the gut remains active. Alongside the fibre feeds and grazing sit the licks and toys. Nick Mackley, Horslyx sales manager, says: “With more and more research highlighting the importance of high fibre diets in horses, many owners are now looking for a simple solution to balance the deficiencies in forage and grazing. This is where licks come in.” Most horses graze on managed land, where the range of grasses and other plant material is limited and therefore the diet could be deficient in nutrients. Licks offered in the field or stable are a way to balance this diet that is both simple and costeffective – two very important factors for consumers. Salt licks have been used for centuries and Lindsay Gall, brand manager for Likit Products, says: “Salt licks Dr D’s Trasty Treats
14
for horses and cattle date back to the mid 1800s. Originally salt was used to deliver iodine into the diet (for humans also) to prevent goiter. Today, salt licks can either be traditional plain or iodised salt or a mix of various essential minerals and trace elements including phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, calcium, iodine, copper, manganese, zinc, selenium, iron and cobalt. The choice of salt lick will be determined by how much mineral and trace elements are already available in the horse’s diet. This needs to be carefully balanced as too much of certain elements can be as detrimental to equine health as a deficiency.” The concept of nutrient rich licks – as opposed to traditional mineral blocks – originally sprang up in the farming industry. Now, there is a wide variety available that can also offer specific
Image courtesy of Horslyx to help reduce boredom and maintain a healthy digestive system,” says Nick. Toys also have a role to play in the promotion of natural behaviour, both in the field and in the stable. “There is a tremendous amount of research on the natural grazing habits of horses. How lack of complete digestion through
Diversify with options that encourage horses to forage and consume small but regular amounts of food stuffs” nutrient formulations that can aid in certain problems, such as respiratory aids or mobility. Used in the field, a lick can ensure that horses are receiving the recommend daily intake of nutrients, but used in the stable they act not only as a source of nutrition, but also as a boredom breaker. “Unpredictable weather patterns have meant more horses are being stabled for longer periods of time and owners are looking for trickle feed sources
Equestrian Business | November 2014 www.ebmonthly.co.uk
irregular feeding rituals (three meals a day) is a significant contributor to Cushing’s Disease and other digestive disorders,” says Joanie Johnston, founder of Nose-It! Equine Ball. If a retailer is faced with a customer stuck for ideas to keep their stabled horses busy, suggest a toy – even the least playful horse may surprise their owner with an ability to play with a snack ball or similar. Trickle feeding balls are particularly good as the customer can place
the horse’s normal pellet feed in the ball and it will prolong mealtimes. These products allow you to “diversify with options that encourage horses to forage and consume small but regular amounts of food stuffs,” says Joanie. If the usual feed doesn’t fit into a treat this provides a great opportunity to add a high fibre pellet to the customer’s orders – this encourages natural feeding behaviour whilst limiting calorie intake.
training Treats are a slightly different type of product than licks and toys, as they don’t necessarily contain healthy or nutritional ingredients – think Polos! However, now there is a wide range of treats that are nutritional, making treats a not-so guilty pleasure. Treats can be more than just a reward, as Dr Heather Daniell from Dr D’s Tasty Treats explains: “Treats are used in a variety of different training programs ranging from the very structured to the more
Licks, treats & toys informal. Treats can feature as an element of Clicker Training, a method that has been used by US Olympians Beezie Madden (show jumping) and Steffen Peters (dressage). Interestingly, a study at the University of Rennes using yearlings and two year olds found that horses were more attentive and learned better when they were rewarded with treats rather than with grooming. Treats can also be useful when training stressed or nervous horses; the treat can provide a positive distraction and reward from stressful events. “Different training methods will of course work better on some horses than others. The challenge with using treats in training is that they must not be used indiscriminately and instead must provide a clear reward for desired behaviour otherwise the horse will see the human as a candy machine!”
DISPLAY TIPS Trickle feeding products and licks should be placed prominently near the fibre feed products, as that is the type of diet they compliment. Nick Mackley says: “Ensuring staff
are well educated on the benefits of licks and treats and utilising any point of sale to highlight these benefits to the customer is useful. In addition, understanding the different kinds of treats and licks available and which suit different customers’ requirements to ensure they select the right product.” Lindsay agrees and says: “Wellpresented, well stocked colourful displays are a must. Offering a variety of products and flavours will also help, ensuring the best environmental enrichment for the horse. Whether it’s a simple bag of treats or a more interactive treat such as a toy or holder, staff training and product knowledge is essential to achieve a happy customer and repeat sales.” Dr Daniell comments: “Horse treats are often an impulse buy so placing them next to the register can be a key way to remind customers they need to take some tasty treats home to their horses! Functionality for POS impulse buys or upselling is also getting more sophisticated on ecommerce platforms and can remind customers to add treats to their order.”
Talking tastebuds Licks and treats are available in a huge amount of flavours, with some, such as blueberry, that seem particularly alien to the horse. Organic chemist Dr Heather Daniell explains that actually the horse’s tastebuds are very similar to our own. “It is thought that horses are also able to taste sweet, salty, sour, and bitter flavours. Tastebuds are chemical receptors which bind components specific to different flavours and then send messages back to the brain about what is being eaten. Scientific studies in which foals were presented with different flavoured waters have shown a preference for sweet water and an avoidance of salty, bitter or sour waters. Much like in humans though, there is variation among individuals. In addition, tastes may change as horses mature, with adult horses showing better tolerance for bitter tastes. This observation is used to explain inconsistent results with anti-chew products. “As horse owners when we think about unusual flavours it may be interesting to note that horses foraging in their natural environment will come across an extremely wide variety of different plants and herbs and therefore different flavours. This variety will also vary greatly depending on what part of the world the horses are in. For us humans, flavours may be unusual flavours but for the horses they might be a firm favourite. Around the world there is also a wide variety in what is fed to horses as treats. In Spain horses are fed carbon pods, while in the Middle East pitted dates are the norm, while in India ghee (a clarified butter) and cow’s milk are fed.”

There’s still time to fill any gaps on your shelves with gifts that are easy for customers to grab and go. Equestrian Business provides a showcase of great ideas.
S
tocking fillers are all about small gifts, of lower value, that catch the eye of the customer and delight the person who receives the gift. Some of the items showcased here are immensely practical – always a good bet for a rural person – whilst others are whimsical, but they are all perfect for a horsey friend, livery yard owner, groom or family member. Make the most of clever packaging that allows you to display items like these

The key to effectively grabbing a slice of the last minute market is upselling. Keep the mood light and whilst they are browsing or at the till ask if they have seen your stocking fillers. Christmas cards are popular, socks are still remarkably popular, but anything

that adds a bit of sparkle to horse and rider will be a hit, as will any items that provide warmth. If you’re planning a seasonal event and welcoming shoppers with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie, these types of products are the ones to highlight. Advertise that you will have gift items for sale and make a big deal that they may be short term only, to encourage sales.

Seasonal supplements
Visibility, availability
& knowledge
There are certain supplements with a seasonal angle that can be an excellent addition to winter stock with hoof, digestion, skin and calming supplements all in demand at this time of year. Equestrian Business asks manufacturers for advice on how to make the most of the market.
T
o make the most of seasonal sales retailers must be able to easily transition stock between the seasons to maintain relevance to the time of year, whilst also stocking supplement mainstays. This is a balance that can be difficult to maintain when shelf space is at a premium and the product offering is so broad. Nettex veterinary technical manager Becky Lees says: “Horses can vary considerably in problems they may encounter at different times of year and this can be affected not only by changes in climate but also how they are managed in their everyday environment.” As such it may be difficult to predict what will be in demand over winter months. Some products such as digestive supplements may be year round sellers, but others, such as those that alleviate laminitis or mud fever are certainly seasonal, with laminitis supplements required in spring and mud fever in winter. This is of course common sense – after all items such as topical ointments, washes and so on change to match the seasonal issues which abound–but supplements risk being overlooked when it comes to the seasonality aspect, instead sticking to the same core ranges year round, but it is certainly worth taking another look at stock options. Stephanie Garrett, Dodson and Horrell field sales controller explains that it is simply a matter of, “thinking about ailments that horses generally suffer from over the coming season – think about what products are preventative and help aid symptoms. By having a seasonal display of feeds and complimentary supplements you give customers a visual ideal of what products are available to help and sell out any seasonal stock preparing your stocks for the next season.”

keep calm With horses spending more time in the stable and perhaps getting less chance to blow off steam, calmers become more popular in winter months. The products to keep horses calm have evolved a
to correct management practices, rather than a miracle ‘fix-all’ product. Increasing owner awareness of the importance of matching calorie intake and calorie source to a horses temperament and workload has meant that many cases can be managed without the need for a
Herbs being processed at Dodson & Horrell Herb Plant lot over the years, as has the consumer attitude to the problem as Chloe Bristow, Dodson and Horrell company vet explains: “Calmers are increasingly seen as an adjunct

calmer. However, where management practices are ideal and owners still struggle with excitability, there has been a trend towards calmers that contain magnesium,
alone or in conjunction with herbal ingredients. Many owners are seeing the best results when using a calmer that contains magnesium as well as herbal aid, and these products are growing in popularity, indeed even more than calmers that contain only magnesium.” Becky Lees from Nettex warns that offering too many calming products may actually just confuse customers: “The market is flooded with many products and often what works for one horse may not always work for another so it can be quite frustrating for horse owners to find one that may work for them. Also guidelines and regulations have changed considerably for the use of calmers in competition especially under FEI and HRA rules and owners need to be careful not to administer a calmer that may contain a prohibited substance. I would always urge them to check what rules they are competing under and check the labels of products they are purchasing so as not to fall foul of the law. If in doubt always contact the supplier, they will be more than happy to advise.” There has been a move towards syringe based calmers as a ‘quick-fix’ for specific occasions such as fireworks or travelling. Alongside this is a whole new type of calmer and Chloe adds: “The use of synthetic ‘calming’ pheromones in dogs and cats has recently expanded into the equine market. Overall, most owners would still tend to reach for the daily, magnesium and herbal calmers and these can be an extra helping hand along with correct management practices.”
on show Of course display matters with all products, and supplements are no exception. “Visibility, availability and knowledge are the key aspects of selling supplements,”
Seasonal supplements With more time spent in the stable there may be an increase in demand for calmers
Ensure product is clean, tidy and organised in a logical way” says Stephanie from Dodson and Horrell. “Ensure product is clean, tidy and organised in a logical way with available advice, make sure in store staff having necessary training in supplements to feel comfortable enough to upsell these. If customers can’t find what they are looking for, don’t know what the product will do they won’t buy it: they look to their retailers to provide that knowledge.” Becky says: “If you have the room
to display all brands together this often can be more eye catching to the consumer and they have the opportunity to see what is available within the range, however in some stores it works better to display all brands together especially if the consumer is not brand aware and is looking for price point e.g. all general purpose supplements together, digestive supplements, respiratory supplements etc.”
digestion development More products than ever before have a focus on digestive health and a lot of manufacturer research and development has gone into designing digestion-friendly diets and investigating the use of pre-and probiotics in horse feeds. Dodson and Horrell nutritionist Anna Pyrah provides an overview of the market development. With the equine feed market ever changing, we are seeing a large number of products specifically being manufactured with the equine digestive system in mind. Around 20 years ago, the horse feed industry was still based around feeding straights (oats, barley, sugar beet) etc. but as research has progressed, we understand a lot more about how the gastrointestinal system of the horse functions and now products have taken a dramatic turn from the traditional way of feeding. This has not only yielded an overall healthier population of horses, but because horse owners can see for themselves the difference these products make to their horses, the feeds that have been designed with digestive disorders in mind are resounding success when it comes to selling products off the shelves. Promoting fibre intake and helping to maintain the correct balance of hindgut micro-flora with the addition of pre and probiotics can be the most effective and easy step to take when helping to ensure a horse has a ‘happy’ digestive system. One major factor in helping to reduce the incidence of gastric problems is through the promotion of fibre on a trickle based delivery. This concept has been evident for some years; a study by Meyer et al (1985), showed that horses produced 400-480g of saliva per 100g dry matter of hay and pasture consumed. This is in comparison to 206g of saliva per 100g dry matter of a concentrate, straight based meal. As saliva plays a major
part in buffering the gastric acid in the stomach, the fact that chewing forage helps create double the amount of saliva than a straight based meal indicates that more damage is likely to occur to the gastric mucosa when forage is restricted. Because of the increasing demand from manufacturers, vets and horse owners to find out whether the addition of pre and probiotics is actually beneficial, a flurry of research trials were induced, looking at the effects of live yeasts on the gastrointestinal system of the horse. In both clinical and research scenarios, Medina et all (2002) and Desrochers et al (2005) have shown the digestive and health benefits of yeasts in horse feeds; not only does the presence of micro flora in the hindgut help to ferment the fibres that are otherwise indigestible, they also help to maintain a neutral pH within that environment. In summary, feeding a horse in a way which ignores the evolutionary evidence can lead to a number of different disorders; from gastric ulcers and inflammatory bowel disease, to diarrhea and fluctuations in the hindgut pH. Efforts to reduce the chances of horses getting these digestive complications have been made by manufacturers and products containing pre and probiotics, psyllium and optimum levels of dietary fibre have been fuelled by the research that has shown us the benefits of feeding horses in the way that evolution demands.

Boost joint health and performance with Equitox Equitox SZA is a new feed supplement proven to aid bone and connective tissue development and reduce hoof and lower limb injuries in the young, active horse.
E
arly retirement due to leg injuries, particularly in the young racehorse, is a cause of huge financial loss for breeders, owners and trainers alike. The issue is no less important in the growing competition horse or show jumper. Reducing the likelihood of these bone and soft tissue injuries requires early intervention and skeletal development can only be improved in the early months and years of the horse’s life. Feeding Equitox SZA supplement to young horses from around six months old is a valuable aid in bone and connective tissue development. Research by Dr Brian Nielsen Ph.D., PAS, Dpl. ACAN, a Professor of Equine Exercise Physiology, indicates that
the inclusion of Clinoptilolite SZA (Equitox) in the diet of young horses, especially when combined with a positive exercise programme, results in documented improvement in bone density and significant reductions in leg, foot and tendon injuries when the horse begins it’s racing or competition career.
How does it work? Equitox SZA contains a form of biologically available silicon. Silicon acts as a regulator for calcium and phosphorus uptake and will directly contribute to a healthy bone cortex (the outer portion of bone that is initially cartilage but is converted to bone as the horse matures) and
a well calcified bone matrix (which comprises minerals and collagen). Silicon also plays an important role in the formation of connective tissue and collagen (bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, hair, skin and hooves). Equitox SZA is a high purity Clinoptilolite SZA which has purity and production accreditation approved in the UK by UFAS and contains no prohibited substances. In simple terms, Equitox SZA is a very effective low cost feed supplement with a number of valuable benefits in performance equine diets.
Equitox SZA is available as powder, granules or pellets for inclusion in diets at 2%. This can be fed individually or mixed into bulk or pelleted feed rations.

Security
Five security checks for festive trading Security expert Jeremy Davies of GCS (GB) Limited provides some advice on keeping your business secure over the festive period.
1
cctv system
Check all CCTV cameras are working and recording clear images. Take the time to clean all camera lenses and move any cameras that Christmas signage or decorations have blocked the field of view. Review night time footage to ensure images can be used for the police in the event of a break in. Those businesses operating ‘externally monitored’ CCTV systems should test each movement sensor works correctly and triggers through an activation to the monitoring centre.
2
DO NOT be tempted to decorate your Tagging System with fairy lights, as these may cause it to false alarm or reduce its effectiveness. Ensure all Security Tag equipment on the tills is working correctly and all staff are aware how to approach a customer in the event one activates the tagging system. Apply security tags to high value products such as gifts, riding gloves, jodhpurs, riding jackets and coats, hats and boots. Thieves target these categories in this period.
3
internal lighting
4
check cash collections
5
intruder alarm
Check lighting operates correctly and replace any faulty units or bulbs. The longer periods of darkness through the winter make burglaries easier.
Keep track of the level of cash held in the till. Use a secure cash drop box to keep cash levels low in the till. Ensure larger than normal amounts of cash are not held in the till or on the premises. DO NOT be tempted to take cash home, take it to the bank or organise a third party cash collection.
Ensure your intruder alarm is working correctly. Check all sensors are triggering the alarm and sensors are not covered by Christmas decorations or displaced stock. Make vehicle access difficult outside of opening hours if in an out of town location.

short boots and chaps
Jodhpur boots and paddock boots provide an affordable and comfortable riding options that can be dressed up with chaps and gaiters.
J
odhpur boots are traditional leather short boots, with an elastic panel at the side that makes putting them on and taking them off simple. Lightweight, flexible and popular with all, jodhpur boots are essential equipment for many on the yard, and for children are always worn in competition too. In fact, when teamed with chaps or gaiters, jodhpurs are often a popular choice by adults for competition, particularly those with legs that do not fit standard boot sizing! Chaps and gaiters come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, in suede, elastic or leather and therefore provide a sensible
option to fit all riders. Gaiters are slim-lined, sleek and often feature the dressage top and when worn with slim line jodhpur or paddock boots can be almost indistinguishable from long boots. This makes them perfect for awkward sizes and young riders still growing whose parents do not want to invest in an expensive pair of long boots just yet. This feature showcases the huge range of products in this sector, which covers the traditional, classic jodhpur boots up to steel-toe capped or highly technical paddock boots, with a full range of prices to cater for every customer.

Swiss engineering experts Heiniger recently introduced a product that promises to reduce the stress of clipping for horses and their owners, so we decided to put their claims to the test.
The first thing to note is the easy carry case which keeps everything neat and tidy and from there is just gets better. We expected to get one, possibly two full clips out of one charge, but the battery lasted far longer than that, in fact we grew tired long before it did! As a cordless clipper the Xplorer has no cumbersome power cords and it is extremely comfortable to use. We used the clippers on a five-year-old horse who had never been clipped before and their quiet running certainly achieved perfection with the horse not batting an eyelid. Our second horse was an older one with a much thicker (dirtier!)
coat and these clippers kept on gliding through the task. Another point to note is that they remained cool throughout, which in turn made for a really pleasant, chilled experience for both handler and horse. In conclusion we were really impressed with the Heiniger Xplorer and give it top marks for style, comfort, quiet-running and usability. The results were perfect, so get them in stock now, as they are sure to be a big hit with your customers.

BUSINESS MATTERS
trade marks & new product launches Had a great idea? Mark Lumsdon-Taylor goes through the important considerations for bringing a new product to market.
I
t has been said before, many times: the best new product will never achieve its potential unless the marketing is right. An inferior, even very disappointing, product can do well when marketed cleverly. Of course, getting the product right is the best and most satisfying start. But getting the product ‘right’ must commence with evaluating the market potential. So many ‘new’ products aren’t new at all but a very minor development of an existing product (not necessarily for the better!) On the other hand, a relatively minor modification that really works could become a blockbuster!
Key questions Designing and developing a genuine new product is an expensive exercise. What are the risks involved? Is the market already overflowing with competitors’ goods? Has it reached saturation point? How long will it take to recover the investment? Is the product likely to be one that will be a ‘must have’ for years, or will it be an ‘of-the-moment’ with a quick burn-out? What are the projections in relation to turnover and – far more importantly – profit? How well will the product fit into the overall business strategy – will there be knock-on benefits for other products in the range? Or will it have to stand (expensively) alone, on its own merits, divorced from the core business? Is it a sensible development? Maybe, rather than developing the product, it would be better/more profitable to sell the idea for someone else to develop? Be clear that answering some of the questions already cited automatically involves a degree of research and an investment of time and resources. It’s good to be passionate about a new product, providing that is tempered with realism. Be critical – don’t allow passion to overwhelm judgement. How far can the product be protected? What is the situation in regard to intellectual property rights?
Generate ideas for new and modified products: use customer feedback, encourage employee suggestions and technical developments. Look on prototypes as a learning curve – and learn from them. Committing to further trials is not a waste of time and money: it is sound business sense. Be aware that time is a big factor in bringing a product to market; take too long and a competitor will have seized the initiative – or there is adverse shift in the market potential. (Of course, recognising the latter and acting on it could save a great deal of money – don’t let pride jeopardise making the right business decision. Vision, determination and tenacity are good – obstinacy and inability to change focus and direction are not!) And once the new product is successfully launched, the work doesn’t stop. ‘Continuing assessment’ is vital. And while all this is happening, remember to value the core business; never take it for granted – it is the solid foundation on which success is built.
All in the name Registering a company name with Companies House is different from registering a trade mark. The difference between a company name and a trade mark can sometimes become blurred: Companies House provides excellent guidance. Does the business have an identifiable trade mark that distinguishes the goods and/or services? Is a
Trade marks identify a story
recognisable ‘brand’ different from trade mark? In essence, no: both can consist of words and logos. Once designed (don’t underestimate the importance of getting it ‘right’ according to very specific guidelines provided by the Intellectual Property Office!) the trade mark can be registered. Note that, to remain in force, a registered trade mark must be renewed every ten years. A trade mark is a good marketing tool – it identifies the brand and builds the recognition on which product loyalty is based. A trade mark isn’t a whim – it should be
Be aware that time is a big factor in bringing a product to market memorable and uncomplicated. Take a look at internationally recognised brands (trade marks) and learn from them! We want customers to recognise and depend on our trade mark – value, respect and honour it. It is possible to go to a firm that provides information and advice about trade mark development that will carry out all the work. Their services are generally very affordable and using one of them can cut out worry and reduce expenditure of time – often in short supply in small businesses. Research the companies offering these services online or, even better, obtain word-of-mouth recommendations from colleagues. Visit a supermarket and note the positioning of a particular foodstuff. Of course, what goes where will depend on the policy of the individual company – but, bar special promotions and the like, the top selling brand is the most accessible. Imagine being in that situation. Or – put another way – a customer asks for advice in the local tack shop; not surprisingly, the attributes of the top selling brand are likely to be the focus. Brands tell a story. Trade marks identify it.
