NOPS stands alone
T
he highly successful NOPS scheme, set up in 2009 to help reduce the risk of naturally occurring prohibited substances in equine feed, is set for key administration changes that will see it continue to grow and develop its international presence. From February 2016, the scheme, currently run as an appendix to the Agricultural Industries Confederation’s (AIC) UFAS/ FEMAS Code (Universal Feed Assurance Scheme/Feed Materials Assurance Scheme), will become a stand-alone code run solely by the British Equestrian
Trade Association (BETA). As part of the review process that accompanies the change, the list of naturally occurring prohibited substances is likely to be amended, with additions and one notable deletion currently being considered. The final list will be published following discussions with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). Chris Gordon, chairman of the BETA NOPS Working Party, says: “Although the assurance schemes with NOPS as an appendix had been a great success, the revised NOPS Code controlled fully by BETA will better serve both

Busy year for Society of Master Saddlers
T
his year’s Society of Master Saddlers’ AGM took place in Newmarket – a fitting location with its history and heritage in the racing world. A busy year saw membership standing at 452, with 349 of those based in the UK and 103 overseas. Within the membership are 268 Registered Qualified Saddle Fitters and a new category of Master Bridle Maker has recently been introduced. The day started with AGM matters including a report from President Peter Wilkes who described his year as full of variety and a year when he achieved ‘some but not all’ of his initial goals. “As a society we are certainly becoming more open and we need to continue that journey. I truly believe moving forward there are a lot of new changes about to happen for the good of the industry,” he said. With the aim of reaching new highs when it comes to awareness of the work carried out by the SMS, a busy calendar of events has been organised to benefit both members and horse owners over the last year. Chief Executive Hazel Morley said: “Our biggest event this year has been the premier and release of our film ‘The Mysterie of Saddlery, from Hide to Horse.’ The premier took place earlier this year at the Barbican and the DVD is now available. The film will be shown regularly

on Horse & Country TV from November. “Our saddlers proved their talents once again at this year’s national saddlery competition. Generously hosted by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers, to whom the SMS is very grateful, the event was well supported and the evening prize giving was standing-room only. “The SMS, with the help of Kay Hastilow and Mark Fisher, has run two one-day courses for ACPAT members to give them an insight into what is involved in saddle fitting and to encourage more co-operation between the professions. We are also working with BEVA to establish closer working relationships between
vets and saddle fitters.” During the AGM, Hazel presented retiring Membership Support Officer, Neil McCarraher with a bronze horse’s head to mark his many years of support and work for the society. The AGM saw the appointment of Laura Dempsey as new President of the SMS with Ken Lyndon-Dykes stepping into the Vice President’s role. Wellknown throughout the industry, after many years as a Master Saddler and Qualified Saddle Fitter, Laura is also an expert in the side-saddle world. Laura will work closely with the Chief Executive, Hazel Morley, and the Executive Committee, along with the sub-committees over the coming year.
Rose-tinted haylage
S
ilvermoor Haylage is participating in the national Pink Haylage Bale initiative and has made over 100 haylage bales wrapped in pink plastic for sale to horse owners, stables and livery yards. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to cancer charities. Having seen the success of similar initiatives in New Zealand, Gemma Vernon, of Grange Farm, Styyup, Doncaster, set about contacting haylage wrap manufacturers Volac. She explained the initiative and persuaded them to manufacture

rolls of pink wrap which was made available through network of distributers across the UK. For each roll of pink wrap Volac donate £4.00 to cancer charities. Haylage and silage producers across the country have jumped on board with the pink wrap selling out completely and perfectly pink bales popping up all over place. Silvermoor Haylage is delighted to be involved in the scheme. Managing director Ralph Thompson said: “When we saw the pink hay bales page on
facebook we could see it was an ideal way for us to support two charities which are significant to us. Rather than donate a proportion of sales price we wanted to take it to the next level and made the decision to donate the total sales price to our two chosen charities; Breast Cancer Care and Charity Project 15 in 15 – Let’s Challenge Cancer. Every life will be touched by cancer in some way at some point, we hope that this small contribution will help in the fight against this terrible disease.”
quine bedding specialist easibed is excited to share the launch of its easi-token reward scheme. To celebrate 15 years of producing quality bedding, easibed has introduced a collectable token into the new design of its 20kg bale which will allow collectors to redeem a whole host of easibed goodies. The easi-token is located on the back of the bale and can be cut out, collected and used to claim easibed gifts and rewards including easibed merchandise. easibed has launched this fantastic opportunity as a way for the company to thank its loyal customers for using their bedding. All the latest information about new token offers, competitions and flash rewards will be available through the company’s social media pages and website, which will act as the main focal point for token updates. Claire Hayward, product sales manager at easibed, said: “We are really excited to be offering up the chance for people to get their hands on some easibed merchandise by collecting our new tokens. It will be a great way of saying thank you to people for using easibed.”

Dangers to vets examined at BEVA Congress A
t the recent British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Congress which took place on September 9-12, BEVA announced that it is working with other major veterinary bodies in the UK to address the injury risks posed to equine vets. The move follows the shocking results of the 2013 survey on work-related injuries in equine practitioners in the UK. This revealed that being a horse vet may carry the highest risk of injury of any civilian occupation in the country, beyond even that of a fire fighter. Representatives from BEVA, the BVA, RCVS, VDS, vet school equine department heads, major equine veterinary practices, together with survey authors, attended round table discussions. Subsequently they have drawn up a consensus statement to pinpoint the major obstacles and key objectives to minimise the risk of workplace injury to equine vets. Mark Bowen, the newly appointed President of BEVA said: “There is a clear need to establish
safer systems of work, and education of the profession and other animal handlers. A key for longevity of future safety is the training of veterinary students and newly qualified equine veterinary surgeons. This will help ensure they are aware of the most risky procedures and the methods they should employ to remain safe as reasonably practicable while working with horses.” Also at BEVA Congress, outstanding achievers in equine health and welfare were celebrated, with the BEVA Equine Welfare Award, sponsored by Blue Cross, being presented to Miss Johanna Vardon MBE, founder and owner of The National Foaling Bank in Shropshire. The BEVA Richard Hartley Clinical Award was given to Professor Paddy Dixon for “A long-term study on the clinical effects of mechanical widening of cheek teeth diastemata for treatment of periodontitis in 202 horses (2008-2011)” by PM Dixon, S Ceen, T Barnett, JM O’Leary, T
Parkin, S Barakzai. The article was published in January 2014, Volume 46 of Equine Veterinary Journal (EVJ). The BEVA Trust Peter Rossdale Equine Veterinary Journal (EVJ) Open Award was presented to Dr Andrew van Eps for the paper “Continuous digital hypothermia initiated after the onset of lameness prevents lamellar failure in the oligofructose laminitis model” by AW van Eps, CC Pollitt, C Underwood, CE Medina-Torres, WA Goodwin, JK Belknap. The article was published in September 2014, Volume 46 of the EVJ. Another celebration at BEVA Congress was the award of honorary membership to BEVA given to Katherine Kissick, a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) from Alderney. This is in recognition of her career spent developing the profession of equine veterinary nursing. Kathy Kissick qualified an RVN in 1983 and following a period in small animal practice embarked on a teaching career that
embraced her lifelong passion for horses. As Head of the School for Veterinary Nursing and Farriery at Myerscough College she was a driving force in developing degree courses in farriery and veterinary nursing and the inclusion of equine modules. Kathy has a long association with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Initially she was a nursing examiner and then an RCVS Council member before taking up the position of Chair of the Veterinary Nursing Council. She has numerous publications and media presentations to her name including regular appearances in Animal Hospital. Kathy now lives on Alderney where she works as a nursing locum and is a trustee of Alderney Animal Welfare. She remains a consultant to Myerscough on Veterinary Nursing Ethics and the farriery Train the Trainer award. Mark Bowen said: “Equine veterinary nursing has always been an integral and vital component of our equine veterinary profession. Thanks in large part to Kathy’s tireless endeavour it is now formally recognised as such.”

Emma Warren from HiHo is the Queen Bee at this bustling company.
In the hot seat…
Q A
John Davies
What is your job title and what does it entail?
Well, we’ve always had alternative job titles at Hiho, so we have the Countess of Contentment for Customer Service and the Duchess of Sterling for Accounts. I’m the Queen Bee because I’m always buzzing around and hatching ideas! On a day to day basis I get involved in all sorts of things – it could be working up marketing campaigns, talking about the website, talking to customers, designing jewellery, looking through the accounts or just drinking tea and thinking! We have a great team here at Hiho and I love my job.
Q
What route did you take to this career?
A
That’s a good one! I started off in the food production business and then moved across to manufacturing businesses, so I couldn’t have been doing things that were more different from now. I started working with Hiho quite a few years ago now and really enjoyed being involved in the business – I love going out and visiting the shows and thinking about what pieces our customers might like next, no two days are ever the same!
Q A
What is the best part of your job?
Working with the Hiho team; we’ve got some great people working with us, both as employees and external support services like PR and social media – they’re all very talented at their jobs.
On the move…
Q A
What is the worst part of your job?
Making myself sit down and focus on one thing – there’s always too much going on!
Q A
How would you advise other people who wish they could do a similar job?
Whether you’re working for someone else, or running your own business, always try and do something you love doing. You’ll be happier, so as a result will do a better job and will be nicer to be around – no-one likes a grumpy moaner!
Q A
If you could do any other job in the world, what would you do? Chief chocolate taster for Lindt!

Super Concentrated Calming Balancer from Blue Chip Blue Chip’s new Super Concentrated Calming Balancer launch was so popular that the company had to extend the original 200 tub offer by an extra 100 tubs!
K
nown for being at the forefront of modern nutrition, Blue Chip used advances in manufacturing processes and research into optimum feeding techniques to create the first super concentrated calming balancer in a tub. With all the advantages of
a superior quality feed balancer combined with ingredients that have been shown to help horses become calm and settled, this revolutionary product is so nutrient dense that it is sold in 3kg tubs which are ideal to stack on shelves and handy for customers to carry home. Blue Chip Super Concentrated Calming Balancer contains no whole-cereal or molasses, so it is low in sugar and starch, containing optimum levels of vitamins, minerals and nutrients, a complete hoof and respiratory formula, along with nucleotides. Nucleotides aid nutrient absorption, recovery rates and immune response. Horses can become easily stressed and stress causes the gut flora to become unbalanced, resulting
in excess pathogenic bacteria but feeding a probiotic is a natural way to re-balance the gut, this helps horses to feel more settled and relaxed. Blue Chip Super Concentrated Calming Balancer contains a probiotic yeast to help soothe the digestive system, along with an easily absorbed form of magnesium combined with L-tryptophan and camomile all renowned for their calming properties.
With generous profit margins and an RRP of £24.95 Blue Chip Super Concentrated Calming Balancer meets the customers’ needs whilst being economical to feed, handy to carry and easy to store. A tub lasts the average pony two months and the average horse one month.

New look packaging Honeychop’s Chopped Oat Straw has had a makeover and boasts exciting new packaging to tempt customers.

the company felt it was time for the packaging to do the product justice. Do you ever get asked for chaff with no oil, no soya and no sugar? Then Honeychop Chopped Oat Straw is the answer! It is a ‘Free From’ product and it is free from almost everything so suitable for horses, ponies and donkeys with intolerance and those with or prone to laminitis. It is perfect for natives and ideal for overweight horses, ponies or donkeys, and those that maintain their weight easily. “Made using only oat straw from our selected assured farms, we can assure every bag is of a consistent high quality. The unique manufacturing process means that the oat straw is screened and cleaned to remove all small fine particles and dust, leaving only a clean, bright soft oat straw chaff for your horse or pony,” says Honeychop. It is the perfect product going
into the winter to help equines shift those extra unwanted pounds they have gained over the summer months. It is high in fibre but very light in calories with no added sugar and low in starch. When managing weight loss for equines suffering from laminitis and equine metabolic syndrome, vets recommend that calories need to be reduced to encourage weight loss; also the non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) content of the diet needs to be less than 10%. Honeychop Chopped Oat Straw has a NSC of 2.2% making it the ideal feed for those needing to lose weight. Its golden colour and soft texture makes it visually appealing and highly palatable. It is the lowest calorie fibre feed in the Honeychop range and can be
used as a partial hay replacer, simply by exchanging the weight of hay with the same weight of Honeychop Chopped Oat Straw. Being a short chop it prolongs eating time, aids good digestion and keeps horses occupied for longer.

Winter feeding feeding
Change the menu as the clocks go back As winter approaches your customers’ feed requirements will change. Leading feed specialists discuss the factors that trigger dietary changes and how retailers can make the most of the increase in demand.
C
learly demand for feed and a change in the type of feeds required will come as winter arrives, but exactly when this will happen really depends on the weather – and as Britain’s seasons seem to vary wildly each year, this is difficult to predict. “Weather plays a major factor with feed orders,” says Susie Blackburn from Honeychop. “Traditionally January and February were the coldest months and there are less nutrients in the grass so owners tended to feed more, however the seasons are now not so clear cut and so we often have a very busy December as people are trying to get organised with shops being closed over the Christmas holidays.” Dengie marketing manager Lisa Wilson says that Dengie usually sees an increase in orders when the clocks go back or when the first real cold snap occurs and advises: “Keeping an eye on the forecast is key as horse owners feed much more fibre when the weather is colder especially if there is snow around. Fibre feeds are a safe feed to use when riding is limited as they don’t increase the risk of problems if the horse

can’t be exercised.” Will I’Anson of British Horse Feeds says that the general year round feed trend is that “UK sales dip slightly for the summer and then ramp up from September to April, however, this is very weather dependent.” Rachel Hornby from Horsehage agrees and adds: “The weather has a massive influence on the level of orders. Orders always increase during the autumnal period but a move to more wintery conditions can cause levels to increase rapidly. The change of the clocks
“The weather has a massive influence on the level of orders” often indicates a change in yard routine with many horses being stabled for the night which also brings about an increase in our orders.” It’s not even as straight forward as just a drop in temperature that triggers altered buying patterns, changing rainfall is also important and that is very difficult to predict. Susie Blackburn explains: “People often
assume that cold winters will mean more feeding and so an increase in feed sales, however past winters have shown that its the wet winters that have more of an impact on feeding as the horses are often removed from the wet and muddy fields and brought into stables. The retailer will also need to have a good understanding of the type of client – if their clients are running professional competition yards then riding will continue as it is their livelihood. Over the past few years there has been an increase in leisure riders turning their horses away over the very cold and wet winter months – this also has a knock on effect on feeding.”
Changing yard routines
It is the change in routine that brings the change in demand for feeds and Sam Horrell marketing director at Dodson & Horrell says: “The winter months do see changes for many horses and
ponies – some are coming in and being stabled more, potentially getting ready for the hunting season, whereas others will have finished their competition season and will be in a period of low work and clearly their diets will need to reflect this change. “If turned out, grass quality will be lower in the winter than summer and reliance on conserved forages increases along with the colder temperatures requiring more calories to help horses to keep warm. These changes can result in increases in digestive disturbances. Fibre is therefore important.” The recent BETA survey does show that fibre is recognised by consumers as the most important dietary component, and functional fibre feeding is now making significant sales increases.Rachel Hornby says: “It is really exciting to see owners becoming more aware of the importance of fibre in their horse’s diet and the effects it may have. winter feeding
“High-fibre rather than high-starch diets provide more energy for horses within work” the link between diet and equine behavior has shown that highfibre rather than high-starch diets provide more energy for horses within work.” She adds: “The importance of providing forage with a known nutritional analysis is becoming more widely accepted particularly for those horses where calorie, starch and sugar levels require management.” For many, this means an increase in forage replacement products – not because their forage is necessarily poor quality, it’s just that bagged and labeled forage, chopped straw, alfalfa or fibre pellets are easy to gauge when adjusting the diet as nutrition levels are displayed on the packaging. One of the increasing problems being seen is more overweight horses with the accompanying medical conditions and these require very specific diets as Susie Blackburn explains: “We are seeing a big increase in customers requiring weight loss programmes for their overweight horses. These overweight horses or ponies are
16 Equestrian October 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
often native or ‘good doer’ types and are often suffering from other conditions like laminitis, Equine Metabolic Syndrome or PPID. Owners are working with their vets and are requiring very specific diets. These horses are requiring management that can be divided into two areas – first weight loss and secondly a diet with a low non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) diet. To get hay with a consistent NSC level of 10% is extremely hard and often expensive as each batch of hay should be analysed. We are seeing a significant increase in sales of Chopped Oat Straw as an alternative to hay – it has a NSC of 2.5%, increased chewing time per kilogram compared to hay and it does not need to be soaked. Also it is very cost effective and we all know it is not cheap to own a horse! ” If hay quality and availability is poor this year in your area,
it is vital that you stock up on alternatives. Plus, think outside the box when it comes to fibre as many horses require more than just forage: fibre cubes, supplements and balancers will also be key products to stock to ensure the horse’s diet provides all the nutrition they need.
Common feeding requirements
“Owners can encounter many winter feeding issues from sourcing good quality forage to feeding elderly horses with comprised dentition,” says Rachel Hornby. “Many feed manufactures offer excellent on site or paper based training that can help prepare retailers for dealing with their customers problems.” The importance of the retailer cannot be stressed enough as many horse owners will ask for their advice and recommendations, so knowledgeable, well trained
staff will be an asset to any retailer and make the customer experience a positive one. You will probably find that many people have the same sort of problems and the most common feeding requirements for winter are firstly, for horses that need to maintain or gain weight and condition and secondly, those that need energy without overheating to account for reduced turnout but maintained workload. Will I’Anson says: “Weight loss is a common problem for a lot of horses over winter and it can be expensive for owners to provide the required diet for improvement of condition. Retailers can help owners to save money by simplifying feed regimes where possible and urging them to buy good quality feed which provides results and is therefore economical. Price concerns continue to be a problem; without doubt horse ownership

Boosting sales
Here are some top tips to promote feed this winter… Will I’Anson from British Horse Feeds: “Point of sale and free samples packs are good for attracting purchasers. It is very important staff have good product knowledge so they can advise customers correctly.” Rachel Hornby from Horsehage: “Feed stock is often stored in warehouses or yards where it is not feasible for customers to browse at their leisure making it difficult for them to know exactly what products are available to them. It would be beneficial for both customers and retailers if the feed stock available could be clearly promoted in the store, possibly with a few bullet points about each individual product and the price. Many feed manufactures are happy to provide point of sale that may help display this information. The use of websites and social media may be helpful in promoting a retailers’ feed stock range or any special offers available to customers. Our website contains a trade page where pictures of all of our products are available to download for our retailers to use. A feed focus day in store may
has dropped and cost is not all but some of the reason – this can be from a number of inputs, not just feed. Our products are designed to be economical and provide good value feeding solutions for your customers.” Weight loss can be a problem for many reasons, including reduced turnout and nutrition levels in the grass, increased stabling causing stress and even a drop in temperature. Rachel Parrott, nutritionist at Allen & Page explains that a fibre diet is crucial for maintaining efficient digestion, which is key to helping horses keep warm: “Fibre is fermented in the hindgut, where a large population of microorganisms live. It is these microorganisms that carry out the fermentation process to produce volatile fatty acids, which the
18 Equestrian October 2015 Business www.ebmonthly.co.uk
horse uses as an energy source. A by-product of fibre digestion is heat – supplying the horse with its own internal central heating system, which is obviously crucial during the colder months of the year. A lack of fibre is therefore a common reason, particularly in winter, for weight loss as the horse has to expend more energy keeping warm and maintaining body condition. Customers should be constantly advised to ensure their horses have ad lib access to forage both in the stable and out in the field – as grazing is generally limited and lacking nutrition in winter, so supplementing with hay or haylage will boost fibre intake. For any horse with dental problems and unable to chew long forage, providing another form of fibre in their
diet is essential for warmth and energy – using a quick soak fibre provider that forms a soft mash and is suitable for use as a hay replacer is ideal.” It is important to keep your best sellers in stock through the winter, but it is also worth investigating higher calorie feeds too. Sam Horrell says: “Pasture mix is popular throughout the
“Customers should be constantly advised to ensure their horses have ad lib access to forage” year and remains so throughout the winter months. However Build Up Cubes, Cushcare Condition and Sixteen Plus Mix/Cubes can expect to see significant increase over
be a great opportunity to invite your customers to meet representatives from the feed manufacturers and get advice and free samples on products available.” Lisa Wilson, marketing manager at Dengie: “Retailers confident of their customers’ needs should stock feed products in line with requirements. Previous sales will be key to revealing best-sellers, so plenty of these should be ordered to ensure that customers have access to a regular supply of their favourite feeds throughout the winter. Also make sure it is displayed clearly and in a visible location – not tucked away at the back of the store! Group the feed according to brand or type and flag up price per kg comparisons to make it as easy as possible for your customers to get best value – there’s a reason every supermarket does this! If a particular feed is on a special promotion, push the boat out and create an eye-catching display to secure as much interest and as many sales as possible.”
the period – this can in part be due to the drop in calorie content and the need to keep warm, something veterans and thoroughbreds are susceptible to, so these high quality conditioning feeds are perfect for the horses needs and are key sellers for retailers.” Conditioning feeds and high oil feeds are useful as they provide the increased calories required without the bulk. This can be both more cost effective and more useful as a horse wintering out may only require one feed per day instead of two or three. Sam adds: “We recommend that meals are kept to two scoops or less, and therefore to ensure that horses and ponies are receiving their required calories stocking space saving, calorie dense solutions such as high fat supplements (D&H Build & Glow), soya oil or supplements which are soya oil based. “

Keep it simple
Perfect for winter Allen & Page’s Fast Fibre is a barley and molasses free ‘quick soak’ feed that is ideal for the good doer or for horses who tend to become excitable even on low energy feeds. It’s a must for any feed room, especially when good forage sources are limited and is also particularly useful for horses with dental problems as it can be used as a partial or complete hay replacer. In addition, as it’s high in fibre and very low in starch and sugar, it’s a great feed for those prone to laminitis and is the ideal choice for horses and ponies at rest or in light work.

Fi-block is made by compressing forage that is full of fibre and goodness into a compact block: no added sugars, molasses or additives, simply natural forage. Feeding Fi-blocks emulates a horse’s natural instinct to graze, whilst keeping a stabled horse entertained for longer. Horses bite and chew on Fi-blocks which is great for helping to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Alternatively Fi-blocks make a hydrating moist chop when soaked in a bucket filled with approx. 4 litres of water, a convenient feed especially if travelling. At the same time bricks and mortar stores should now be ordering in stock – this is where our Christmas feature plays a vital role. Straightforward cards that offer a one off purchase value are still very popular and will be great for loyal customers. rugs, feed and so on, but perhaps setting aside an aisle, a shelf or a corner for smaller, stocking filler gifts and directing people to suitable gifts within your usual stock is useful. For instance, if you sell complete grooming kits usually, why not promote them as the ideal gifts they are? If you have just got in the latest winter clothing, that is also a perfect Christmas gift. It is important that your marketing strategies align at this time of year – your online marketing should be promoting your in store offering. If you are online only then you should ensure you can access the stock and send it out in time – if you need to offer longer lead times then make it very clear on your website –for instance you could promote a countdown to the last day for guaranteed delivery before Christmas.

Biosecurity & pest control Customers are increasingly seeking out ways to keep stables and yards clean, fight bacteria and prevent the spread of disease. It is a growing market that’s worth investigating.
G
ood biosecurity is important for any professional yard so items like disinfectants are worth stocking. Large livery yards, competitions centres and studs can have a lot of horses coming and going, putting them at risk from infectious diseases such as strangles and equine flu. Vaccination is key for the horses, but diseases such as strangles are not currently covered by vaccination so the onus lies on applied biosecurity protocols, which can vary from full disinfection of stables, fencing and buildings, to isolation areas, staff hand cleansing and individual tools and grooming equipment. Stocking products to assist with biosecurity could provide extra interest and as publicity surrounding equine infectious diseases and their management blooms in the media, customers will be increasingly looking for ways to keep clean. Jennie Westcott from The Animal Health Company says: “I think the days of
a once a year spruce and clean of the stables is in the past as more people strive to keep their stables disinfected more often and there are products on the market that are more pleasant to use than the old fashioned Jeyes fluid.” One of the products worth looking at is CleanRound, a range of products for both horses and dogs that kill 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and fungi. The range includes rug wash, shampoo and yard and stable wash, providing an easy to use and understand system for biosecurity. All CleanRound products contain DuoMax E10, which contains ground-breaking technology in the killing of bacteria, fungi and spores. Robert Walker from CleanRound says: “The CleanRound Brand and products were launched in 2010. The first ‘End to End or Nose to Tail’ bio security and infection control solution to kill equine infections like strangles and ring worm in a simple safe formulation that’s non toxic, corrosive or irritant.”
This autumn Robert is also launching a new CleanRound 5 Minute Fogger that comes in the form of a pressurised container, which when set off in a stable, lorry or area of around 40 square metres, will release a mist that sanitises the whole area to kill bacteria on surfaces that are not normally reached with power washing or normal cleaning. “The beauty of this product is it can be left to do its work overnight and doesn’t need any supervision so is labour and mess free,” says Robert. “Just remove the empty canister and dispose of in a bin. The potential users are endless. Animal transporters equine and canine, stables, vet surgeries, and any place you have wanted to sanitise but cost has prevented you from doing so in the past.” Robert has noticed an increase in awareness of products that can kill infection but he says: “This is not being promoted aggressively to the customer by the majority of retailers. Every animal is at risk
if the owner isn’t using product that can help prevent infection. Being pro active can only save the animal from suffering and the owner money, when a vet is needed to solve an avoidable health problem. “The retailer should promote biosecurity as a complete proposition to make sure the customer introduces a ‘best practice’ approach to their stable management and animal well being.”

Stables are often areas that harbour bacteria, and in yards where horses frequently come and go, it is important that stables are kept as clean as possible. There are many types of bedding and stable disinfectants or deodorisers available, in powder form, such as StableZone’s Antibacterial Bedding Powder and Lincoln’s Carbolic Powder. Jennie Westcott notes an increase in customer demand for stable hygiene products: “We have seen an increase in our StableZone products over the past year or so. I think people are more careful about disease control both in their own yards and more importantly in livery or shared yards. I think people are also looking after their equipment better, instead of simply replacing things, as available spending money is reduced with the increased

costs of concentrate feeds, hay and bedding. So cleaning and disinfecting even old buckets and feeders being done rather than just buying new ones. “We have seen our bedding powder flying off the shelves. This is an antibacterial bedding powder that you mix with the bedding. Not only does it help keep the bed fresher for longer but it also is very absorbent, meaning you have less bedding waste. It helps in every stable, but is a must for a horse on box rest to help keep the bedding dryer, fresher and reduce ammonia smells. This in turn helps with hoof conditions like thrush prevention.” There are many products that can stop the build up of ammonia, which helps to keep the horse’s hooves healthier and airways clearer. Equifresh bedding conditioner is a pure organic mineral which is an organic way to keep stables, fresh. Also, some bedding companies have products that provide antibacterial protection. Nettex has launched Zeozorb, a highly effective stable sanitiser. This micro-porous mineral, that is in a small granular form is a natural detoxifier that completely removes the smell of ammonia. Nettex Zeozorb can be used on all types of bedding, on stable and lorry floors and any other wet areas that may harbour the smell of ammonia caused by urine. Zeozorb is odourless, unlike other stable sanitisers that give off a strong disinfectant smell, which allows a more natural breathing environment for the horse. It also reduces the amount of soiled
bedding needing to be removed and continues to breakdown manure and bedding even after removal. This creates an improved atmosphere in the yard by reducing the size of the muck heap and inherent fly infestation. PelletBeds are treated with Protek Envirocair Veterinary Disinfectant, which is a DEFRA approved, safe, long acting disinfectant proven to kill 99.999% of bacteria, fungi, spores and moulds. Good stable hygiene also comes from good management practice – for instance regular mucking out and poo picking will help, plus feeding hay in items such as the HayBar can prevent it mixing with the bed and causing more problems. Don’t forget to think a little broader – could you offer jet washers, either to purchase or hire? Also grooming kits that are colour coded so that they can be used only for one horse, or perhaps stock the KBF99 range of products from Vale Brothers that includes grooming products, yard tools and buckets coated with KBF99 that kills harmful bacteria and fungus, helping to safeguard against strangles, ringworm, E.Coli and mycotoxin. The trick is to provide a full range of products to help customers tackle bacteria from all angles.
so stocking items to tackle these is important, particularly in the winter when pests such as rodents may be seeking shelter. Rodent traps can be sold easily, both humane and otherwise to cater for all. Also consider including other items such as fly repellents, flea sprays and foggers. Any business that handles cereals, grains or dried food products is at risk from stored product insects. There are many different species of insect – mainly beetles and moths – that can damage raw food materials and contaminate finished products, making them unfit for consumption. Rats and mice are an inevitable part of country living and consequently so is the need to control them. It is impossible to keep rodents away, but there are a number of things that can be done to protect valuable horse feed and limit areas where rats can set up home. Nic Blaszkowicz, global marketing manager of British rodenticide manufacturer PelGar International shares some useful tips and insights to help you control rodents this winter: “A few steps taken now, and throughout the autumn and winter, will make rodent control on your property
much easier,” explains Nic. ”First – tidy up where possible, clear away old feed sacks and spilt food, and remove any high growing weeds from around stables and stores. Pay special attention to areas where you have seen rats in previous years, and rodent proof feed stores where possible, a metal strip on the bottom of a badly fitting door is ideal to keep them out.” Where proofing and trapping have run their course, be prepared to use rodenticides. It is now a prerequisite for amateur users of rodenticides to use bait stations and these are much more effective once weathered in and pre-placed in areas where rats are likely to travel. Rats are prone to neophobia – fear of new things – so if bait stations are in place before you see the first rat they are more readily accepted as part of the environment, and bait can be quickly placed inside them once the first signs are seen. “It is vital that you act quickly as soon as rodent activity is detected as it is much easier to clear a small infestation than a plague, and once the first visitors have been seen off be wary of the next wave; new rats often come in to take the place of those that have been killed off,” advises Nic.

Global influence on the markets – possibly outside the World Wars – has probably never been so great. Turmoil in China with stocks collapsing must affect export markets around the world – including the UK’s. At the same time, the UK’s manufacturing sector continues to be weak – it shrank 0.3% in the second quarter. Meanwhile, business investment recorded a growth of 2.9% for the same period. SMEs don’t need an economist or an actuary to explain that the latter statistic is unlikely to be sustained. At the same time, consumers continue to be the biggest driving force in the British economy. Good for those selling saddles and
In the meantime, TV and radio programmes reviewing the Chinese and Greek economies are recording good audience ratings, some even competing with those recorded by the soaps! SMEs often perceive the financial markets as remote and irrelevant – at least until high interest rates directly affect them. A rise of just 1% can make a huge difference, largely because a small business simply doesn’t have the flexibility and fluidity enjoyed by larger companies. Of course, a good percentage of SMEs and startups have cash reserves and consequently believe they are in the enviable position of having a shield against potential interest
“SMEs that not only survive but are notably successful rarely, if ever, ignore the importance of undertaking a full financial audit” other equestrian-related gear – worrying in the long term if the main impetus continues to come from the consumer sector. And of course, last month the Bank of England signalled that we might need to factor in rising interest rates at the end of this year or beginning of next year. Investors will be delighted however, since then the volatility of the stock and commodities markets signal a slowdown of the global economy. Mark Carney’s decisions will be tempered by all these events and maybe we shall continue to enjoy low interests. The US is doing rather better than many analysts expected. The world’s largest economy is expanding at 3.7% annual rate – considerably up on the estimated 2.3%. Deloitte’s chief economist, Ian Stewart (commenting on GDP) remains pretty upbeat saying: “Despite recent turmoil in the Chinese financial markets, the UK and US look set for decent growth through the rest of this year.”
rate rises. But they have failed to take on board the potential knock-on consequences! Higher interest rates mean that mortgage costs and other loans will automatically rise so causing a downfall in disposable incomes – unless – wages keep pace. (Even when increases in wages are commensurate, there
is still a psychological reaction that leaves consumers believing they are poorer!) And of course, a rise in interest rates can make borrowing more difficult to arrange anyway – something that it would be dangerous to overlook. SMEs that not only survive but are notably successful rarely, if ever, ignore the importance of undertaking a full financial audit. Knowing the real, true level of debt is an essential factor, and the fluidity of cash flow is equally crucial. SMEs that are borrowing currently need to place themselves in the best possible place to evaluate longer term lending arrangements. That will make it far easier to sort the most attractive and workable lending sources. No-one can be sure when UK interest rates will go up and almost daily fluctuations in the market make even hazarding a guess difficult. The best guesstimate might be early 2016; it’s best to consider all the implications and prepare a strategy that takes account of potential eventualities. Finding the right game plan for an SME may pale to insignificance when compared with the work undertaken by the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee – but its importance to a small business or sole trader shouldn’t be underestimated.

spoga horse autumn show
A truly international flavour After three excellent trade fair days, spoga horse autumn not only recorded a slight plus in the number of exhibitors, but also increased its share of foreign exhibitors up to 80 percent in total.
4
32 exhibitors from 33 countries presented the new products and trends of the equestrian sport industry for the summer season 2016. “In the scope of spoga horse we offer the industry high-profile contacts and new business potential twice a year. The trade visitors aren’t offered such a condensed overview of the market anywhere else,” summed up Katharina C. Hamma, chief operating officer of Koelnmesse GmbH. “The increased growth and the level of internationality confirm the quality of the event. Spoga horse is ‘the place to be’ on the international events calendar of the equestrian sport industry.” The portfolio of exhibits ranged from clothing for the horse and rider, saddle and leatherware, care products, through to health
Spoga horse autumn 2015 in figures 432 companies from 33 countries, 80 percent of which were from abroad, participated at spoga horse autumn. These included 85 exhibitors and three additionally represented companies from Germany as well as 331 exhibitors and 13 additionally represented companies from abroad. Including estimates for the last day of the fair, around 37,000 visitors from over 108 countries attended spoga horse and spoga+gafa 2015. The share of foreign trade visitors was over 60 percent.

and feed products. Traditionally, spoga horse autumn is held parallel to the garden and leisure trade fair, spoga+gafa. Including estimates for the last day of the trade fair, in total around 37,000 trade visitors from 108 countries attended the two fairs.
Success from the off
Spoga horse autumn was once again sold out early on, although the organisers had made additional exhibition space available directly next to the hall for the first time. This made it possible to expand the exhibition space by almost five percent. The increase in the amount of exhibitors was primarily due to the growth in the numbers of foreign exhibitors. The strongest European participations came from Great Britain, France and Italy. The German Association of the Sporting Goods Industry e.V. (BSI) also considers spoga horse to be a success in the eyes of its members. The equestrian sport industry can look back on a strong spring and was expecting a continuation of the good growth in turnover in the second half of the year. “Spoga horse set important impulses here,” says Dirk Kannemeier, vice president of BSI. “High-quality, international

visitors are decisive for the success of the trade fair. We are delighted that spoga horse offers this. Our members are reporting very good international business deals and a high demand.” The excellent quality of the visitors was also confirmed by the independent visitor survey. Around 80 percent of the visitors interviewed are involved in procurement decisions, 56 percent are even decisive in the decision-making process With a foreign share of over 60 percent, spoga horse was once again also able to slightly increase the constant high level of internationality among its visitors.
Award winners
At the end of spoga horse autumn, Koelnmesse distinguished the industry’s best innovations, sales concepts and CSR projects with the spoga horse award, – and the spectrum of the nominees was enormous. After a fundamental expansion for the first time in 2015, entries in the categories Sales Concepts and Sustainability/CSR were also distinguished in addition to the original category of Innovations. The expansion is the organiser’s way of doing justice to the
Derriere
increased demands the industry places on marketing and the specialised trade. The number of entries submitted to the award proves that this was also in line with the industry’s standpoint. The jury, comprising of members from the specialised trade, trade media and consultants, appraised 58 entries this year – around 18 percent more than in 2014. In the Innovations category, H+P Handels GmbH & Co. KG/ Suedwind Equestrian secured themselves first place with the sole technology, IceLock 3S. With this decision, the jury paid tribute to the fact that this product places the focus on people’s safety. The technological innovation by Suedwind, which offers 40 percent more grip on wet surfaces and up to 400 percent more grip on icy surfaces, provides excellent services regarding the safe footing of the horse keeper. Second place went to Goria Brushes for the one-handed, wooden sweat scraper. As a pretty everyday product, this item unites a high-quality appearance and extremely nice haptic-feel with production characteristics that almost recommend the one-handed sweat scraper for the Sustainability Award. The sweat scraper is made out of ash wood

that is glued seven times and which lies perfectly in the hand thanks to its ergonomic shape. Cavallo asserted itself in the category Sales Concepts with its benefits package. The all-round support for the retailer was the determining factor for the jury’s decision. Cavallo is the only manufacturer who has a rate of return products, i.e. accepts old merchandise back. The package also contains further salespromoting measures such as interest-free financing and the possibility to exchange goods, tangible and reliable aids for the trade. HKM Sports Equipment claimed second place for its shop furniture ‘Horse’. It not only convinced with its charming and striking appearance, according to the jury, it is also exceptionally practical, can be implemented in a very flexible way and has the right height to address the customers without blocking the view of other sales areas. Only a limited number of entries were received in the category Sustainability/CSR. Only the companies HKM Sports Equipment, Mountain Horse and Kentucky Horsewear were prepared to step forward with their commitment. This in itself would actually be reason

enough to distinguish each of them with an award. However, a decision had to be taken here too. Ultimately, Mountain Horse won the race with its environmental commitment. The jury was impressed by the comprehensive and indepth approach that Mountain Horse adopts regarding the sustainability of its production process. In addition to not using real fur or substances that are harmful to the environment, the Swedish manufacturer also only uses waste down left over from the meat production process - in other words, no poultry is bred especially for the down production. Second place went to Kentucky Horsewear for its synthetic sheepskin. Here, the idea is also the well-being of animals, other than horses: Kentucky Horsewear spares the sheep, implementing instead artificial sheepskin that displays similar qualities as the natural product regarding its air circulation and shock-absorbing effect. A further advantage is that the synthetic sheepskin is easier to care for than real sheepskin and can be washed in the washing machine.
The special jury prize After three interesting trade fair
days and exciting jury sessions, the jury of the spoga horse award decided to confer a special jury prize. Three companies were shortlisted here. The candidates included the company Hidez with its compression item for horses that can be used when ridden. According to the jury, the novel internet exchange platform, Networkshopping, is especially interesting for retailers. Retailers can order goods fast that they no longer have in stock from other dealers, who don’t want to offer them in their shops any longer or who want to offer them to the end customer directly via other channels. However, ultimately Saddlock won the special jury prize. A safety set for saddles, which in the face of the high number of recent tack room thefts will no doubt be high in demand. The set comprises of several components, including a stainless steel cable and a mechanical lock. In order to be able to secure the saddle using the cable, a hole has to be punched into the saddle – the aesthetic problem that arises as a result, is solved by applying a decorative ring to the punched hole. Furthermore, should a saddle be stolen, it can be identified using an integrated chip.
Spoga horse award winners
Derriere Equestrian has returned from Spoga horse 2015 after another outstanding exhibition. Having launched at Spoga horse 2014, it was great to see the business return to the event striving and succeeding in the international market place. The team were busy throughout the exhibition with existing international clients and many new buyers. To return to the exhibition after a year of trading, confident in the success of the figure planning, margins and mark ups for retailers and a well-established RRP in place both in the UK and internationally was a great result for the business. To have such a plethora of fantastic feedback and testimonials from both end users and trade buyers, has given the company great confidence and success in sales. The success of Spoga 2015 has seen a tremendous reorder level and new accounts into: USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Russia, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Italy, France, Portugal, Poland and Dubai. As a quality brand, Derriere Equestrian is delighted at the feedback from all buyers internationally and is already looking forward to Spoga 2016. Claire Galer, managing director at Derriere Equestrian says of the exhibition: “I was so pleased by the response we received at Spoga Horse 2015, we could not have had a better exhibition and are delighted at the quality and quantity of international retailers that are now stocking and selling our products. We are busy with production arriving throughout September and October to ensure excellent customer care in our order fulfilment and support to our trade clients.”
The next spoga horse spring is scheduled to take place from January 31 to February 2 2016. Further information is available at www.spogahorse.com

ken lyndon-dykes
A shocking event
Witnessing the Shoreham Air Show crash has shaken Ken to his core and prompts him to examine danger within life and sport. KEN LYNDON-DYKES The pilot of the Hunter Hawk jet that crashed at Shoreham Air Show – Andy Hill – is a very close friend of mine and the day after the crash we were both due to take part in a flying display. Eleven people were killed in the crash, with many others affected. I started flying when I was sixteen – it was then possible to hold a pilot’s licence at a younger age than applicable to a driving licence. Over the years I have lost several friends to flying but I have never before actually witnessed the accident. On this occasion I was very close to the crash: the heat was intense and words are totally inadequate to describe the horrific carnage. The fact that Andy survived the crash is no less than miraculous; as I write, he remains in a medically induced coma. The crash investigators will have access to a great deal more information when Andy returns to consciousness. At the moment he knows nothing about the horrific consequences of the accident and it is totally impossible to imagine coping with something so horrific and so heart-breaking. The Hawker Hunter is a remarkable aircraft that was used by the RAF until the early sixties. The single-seat version was used as a fighter, a fighter-

bomber and for aerobatics. The two-seater version was used for training purposes by many air forces around the world. The Hunter has an excellent safety record and, as the owner of an exmilitary jet, I emphasise that the regular inspections demanded by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) are probably the toughest in the world – and aircraft are automatically grounded without up-to-date certification. On occasions I have flown to
“By its very nature, horse riding, in all its many forms, cannot be totally free from danger” undertake saddle fitting-related appointments – more often than not those associated with giving lecture/demonstrations at considerable distances from our base in Kent. I have always enjoyed this mode of travel, and it has certainly saved a lot of time and hassle. At the moment I don’t feel like flying at all – but I am sure this will pass. When I was eventing several riders and horses sustained fatal injuries and only this year there have been a number of fatal accidents.
Eventing is perceived as a particularly dangerous equestrian discipline, as is national hunt racing, but it is rare – although not unknown – for accidents to involve spectators. The accident in Shoreham involved people who were not even spectators – most dreadfully sad and a shock beyond comprehension for the families involved. By its very nature, horse riding, in all its many forms, cannot be totally free from danger. At first sight ‘hacking’ or ‘pleasure riding’ might be considered the safest options but, of course, they are not. The numbers of road accidents involving horses and riders tells a different story – and that relates to accidents that have been officially reported – the BHS believes the ‘real’ numbers are far, far greater. But then taking the car out of the garage to drive to the local shops is not without an element of danger and even walking to the shops has potential hazards. Psychologists have attempted to prove that ‘extreme sports’ – I’m uncertain if eventing and racing et cetera are included in this group – appeal to people who live on the edge and love the adrenalin flow they achieve from ‘danger’. Some may be adrenalin junkies and become dependent on the way our bodies synthesize when we

But don’t we synthesise adrenalin in much the same way when we have a tight schedule to meet? I am sure the editor would say she has an adrenalin flow when EB’s publication date is approaching! And who hasn’t experienced the need for an adrenalin flow to motivate us when we are running seriously behind with an essential task? One of the most powerful aspects of riding and equestrian sports and disciplines surely relates to the indescribable ‘oneness’ we achieve with the horse? There are something like a million horses in this country – does that ‘oneness’ extend to every one of their riders – no matter what the circumstances? I rather think not! And I guess we have all ridden horses when we have experienced exactly the opposite – when the horse’s thoughts and psyche don’t seem to match ours at all! Safety is an enormously important factor in everything we do in life and a large and evolving industry has grown around it. However much we legislate, however much we implement rules, we cannot fully escape ‘danger’. That is all part of being human.

Mark Bryan
At Staffordshire-based bespoke saddle makers Black Country Saddles Introduce your company: Black Country Saddles was started by Master Saddlers and business partners Rob Cullen and John Hartley about 25 years ago. Between them they have over 80 years’ experience of saddlemaking. That makes them sound old! But far from it – they both have an enthusiasm and love for their craft that reflects in our many saddles which they are daily involved in the making of. I joined the company nearly four years ago as managing director and like Rob and John, I enjoy each and every day working at the new Cannock premises. We have a brilliant team and there is a strong family atmosphere – in fact I’ve never worked with such a close-knit, friendly and helpful group ever – and I’m almost the same age as Rob and John so I’ve been around! Our key aim at all times is to make the very best hand-crafted saddles of the highest quality that meet with the demands of today’s horse and rider, whether competing at the very highest level or simply riding at leisure. We are always looking for and introducing new innovations and developments as we keep moving the business forward – as with any company you can never afford to stand still. We sell our saddles via our network of authorised dealers around the world – all of whom have to offer a qualified fitting service (as well as meeting various other, exacting criteria) and our aim is to ensure the best possible combination of fit for both horse and rider whilst also providing a totally professional service overall.
How has the equestrian industry changed over your career? I have only been in the equestrian industry for a few years so that’s a hard one to comment on but I am trying to make change for the good wherever needed as an outsider coming in with fresh ideas in areas of customer

service, production and quality control management etc. Future changes I think should encompass the industry trying to come across as more attractive, and more modern in its approach to encourage newcomers, especially youngsters, into the saddlery world.
What was your career path that led to this point? I started out on the shop floor aged 16 as an apprentice (also in manufacturing) and worked my way up to MD by my mid/late 20s.
How has Black Country Saddles changed in your time as managing director and what role have you played in this? Coming in from a different industry and having spent my previous 25 years in business in London I have been able to introduce various new systems and ways of working. One big change was to set up our own treemaking facility after overseeing the refurbishment of our Walsall factory. Overall we now employ 30 staff whereas three-to-four years ago we had about 18 staff – a fact that was noted and became the subject of a BBC TV feature (and BBC radio) several months ago.
What equestrian or business innovations have caught your eye recently? I think most innovations are technology-led these days. Social media has now become a major part of networking and marketing a business and this is one area we have embraced.
What do you think is the secret to Black Country Saddles’ success? We are dedicated to the brand and being a leader in our market by pursuing the traditional values of quality and service in everything we do, everything we make and everyone we work with. Black
Mark Bryan Country Saddles has a zero tolerance to sub-standard quality of supplies and endproduct to ensure we are selling the best possible product to our valued customers. Offering professional customer service in conjunction with our network of dealers is something we also strive for to ensure everyone gets the correct help and advice they need throughout the processes of ordering (and post-sales) when it comes to finding the right saddle to suit and perfectly fit their horse.
What are you most proud of about the company? I’m proud that we receive high praise daily from all over the world with regards to the quality and build of our saddles. This has even led to four radio mentions and three pieces of coverage on BBC TV mentioned above which is fantastic for the business.
Where do you see the business in 10 years? We have doubled turnover in the last three to four years so I can see us moving to even larger premises and taking on and training more dedicated staff. This is something the business has achieved even during a general manufacturing recession and was also one of the TV features we were involved in. I also believe we will still be one of the top saddle manufacturers in the world for high-end, quality, bespoke saddles – or put another way… I believe that within the league table of saddle manufacturers we shall remain within ‘The Top One’!
Quickfire questions: What do you do in your spare time? Work out and play golf; see my kids and grandkids. What is your favourite TV programme? Modern Family Do you have a motto or favourite phrase that you live by? Do it now! What was the last movie you watched? Northern Soul – (I used to go to the Wigan Casino when I was younger for all night Northern Soul Dancing). Describe yourself in three words? Cheeky, sporty, determined. If you could do any other job in the world what would you do/have done? Professional footballer.
