Step by step HOW TO SEW the Crafty Ponies STITCHES Log on to www.craftyponies.co.uk for video instructions!
Scissors
Needle A quick guide to stitches!
Thread
1
Pins
2
Cut a piece of thread no longer than your arm
3
To start sewing make 3 or 4 back stitches as shown to secure the thread Make each stitch 2-3mm long and stitch close together
Thread the needle and knot end of thread
5
4
This is back stitch. Make each stich 2-3mm long for a neat strong seam.
6
What lovely sewing!
1
9
This is slipstitch. Keep stitches close together for extra strength
7
If you are sewing with a sewing machine use straight stitches about 2-3mm for neatness + strength
10
To finish sewing do 3 or 4 backstiches as in step 5
8
Sewing machines help you to work quickly and neatly!
Copyright Karen Clithero @ Crafty Ponies www.craftyponies.co.uk
11
To hold fabric together while you sew there are two methods - pins + tacking stitch!
12
This is basic Tacking stitch. It holds fabric together before you stitch it properly. The stitches are loose + long and far apart - about 5mm
15
To hold fabric together before you sew it, you can use dressmakers pins
13
Because it is temporary you can just start off with a knot and finish with one or two backstitches
16
Take the pins out as you sew. Sew up to the pin then remove it. Do not sew over the pins
14
When you have finished sewing, the tacking stitches are removed by cutting the thread and pulling it out
17
For complicated sewing first pin the fabric, then basic tack it and then sew it properly Thats a really good job!
18
1cm
S.A
Seam allowance
What is seam allowance?
0.5cm
Most of the sewing on the Crafty Ponies has 1cm S.A (seam allowance)
21
S.A
19
Seam allowance is how far away from the edge of the fabric we sew
20
0.5cm S.A
The Crafty Ponies mouth and feet have 0.5cm S.A and are sewn with a slipstitch
22
To sew really neatly you could measure and draw a 1cm S.A with a dressmakers pencil

Paper side of Adhesive sheet Reverse of fabric
Put the fabric face down onto the paper side of the adhesive sheet and draw around it then cut out
7
.......up to a minute or two for larger pieces

Peel back some of the paper to see if the adhesive has transfered to the fabric
11
Iron the paper for several seconds for a small piece

14
Check to see if the adhesive has transfered to the fabric.....
15
Damp cloth Fabric Fabric
....If it has peel off the paper, if not repeat steps 14 & 15 until all adhesive is transfered
16
Put the two pieces of fabric together reverse sides facing. Cover with damp cloth and iron for 10 seconds to bond securley

THE FUN PART Stuffing your pony!
If you do not smooth out the seams properly the stuffing will not be even and your pony may be lumpy (still cute though!)
53
Take your time stuffing your pony! stuff a little bit at a time starting with the outer edges
54
If you put lots of stuffing in the pony he will be firm + solid!
When you have finished stuffing your pony
If you stuff lightley he will be a softer pony!
Sew the belly opening with a secure slip stitch
Keep smoothing as you go, using a rounded stick if you need to help you to push the stuffing in!
