MESSAGES Message from the Ministry of Trade and Industry
Message from the Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs
Stephen Cadiz
Kevin Ramnarine
Minister of Trade and Industry
On behalf of the Ministry of Trade and Industry I welcome you to the latest edition of Who’s Who in Trinidad and Tobago Business. Once again this publication showcases some of the best companies in this country, crossing a wide variety of sectors and industries and presenting a comprehensive picture of our local business community. This year, Trinidad and Tobago hosted the first ever Caribbean Investment Week, encompassing the Caribbean Investment Forum and the Trade and Investment Convention. Our local private sector was at the forefront of this event, demonstrating the strength of our businesses and industries, and the benefits of forging strategic partnering with them. The Week was a solid example of public/private partnership at work, with Government providing support for private firms as they went about the task of generating more business. This is exactly how our Government views its relationship with the private sector – as a partner in national development. We are proud that our local firms have fully accepted the challenges of globalisation and placed T&T at the forefront of regional trade. Many of them are also major players on the international markets. Please peruse this document thoroughly and learn about what our business sector has to offer. I am sure you will realise exactly why Trinidad and Tobago is often referred to as “The Place for Business” in the region.
The energy sector is the mainstay of our economy and Trinidad and Tobago is well known both as a leader in the export of LNG, methanol and ammonia, and for its role in the development of the oil industry. The main focus of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs is to increase national oil production through the optimisation of oil producing acreage, most of which is held by State-owned Petrotrin. This requires an understanding of the enormous potential of heavy oil reserves and Petrotrin’s conclusion of the largest local land based 3D seismic programme is critical in this regard. Furthermore, the Ministry is focused on attracting Foreign Direct Investment through international bid rounds for open acreage and through the attraction of investment in the downstream sector. Expansion of the upstream sector will be supported by a new multi-user port at Point Galeota that will service logistical requirements of oil and gas companies. At present the National Gas Company and its subsidiary the National Energy Company are in discussion with international investors for projects that include: the AUM II plant, Methanol to Olefins and an Iron and Steel project, among others. I have also articulated a vision for the industrial development of the South West Peninsula, which is poised for expansion centred on the Union Estate and its related infrastructure.

The Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association is pleased to be associated once again with the Who’s Who in Trinidad and Tobago Business magazine. While the past year has been challenging, Trinidad and Tobago’s manufacturers are anxious to get back down to business, and focus on a path towards economic recovery that will lead to job creation, innovation and new business developments. The way forward calls for greater collaboration between the private and public sectors and a sustained effort by all to ensure that opportunities that will enhance the competitiveness of T&T for business and investments are maximised. The TTMA believes that a more meaningful thrust towards the economic diversification of the non-energy sector is needed in the year ahead, in a way that facilitates a steady and sustainable rate of growth, explores new export markets and embarks on a more focused effort on small business development. The TTMA stands ready to work with the relevant stakeholders to restore confidence and reactivate economic activity in the manufacturing and business sectors.

Minister of Energy and Energy Affairs
The Energy Chamber’s strategic mandate has always been to elevate Trinidad and Tobago as a preferred destination for energy sector investment and a regional energy services hub. For our mandate to develop, we believe that the country needs an efficient business sector capable of speedy and flexible decision-making and a business environment which enables businesses to expand. The Chamber looks both inward and outward, focusing firstly on how we can surmount existing business growth barriers for the greater national good and, secondly, how we can export the energy services our members provide. The Energy Chamber has always championed the cause of the local energy services sector and these companies constitute the bulk of our membership. In fact, one of our strategic directives is for local service providers to become net exporters of their energy service expertise to international markets. Over the past year, we have embarked on several trade missions seeking new business opportunities in South America and Africa. We realise by promoting our strengths that the kernel of a national brand will be cemented in global minds and T&T will take its place as a global energy leader and truly develop into the energy services hub of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Venture Capital Incentive Programme The Venture Capital Incentive Programme was established through the Venture Capital Act 1994. Its major roles include acting as regulators on behalf of the Government for the venture capital industry of Trinidad and Tobago. The VCIP also acts as the facilitator, bringing equity capital and entrepreneurs together, and as a promotor trumpeting the cause of equity financing. Our particular model pays special attention to small and medium enterprises in order to increase the range of financing options available to them. The major players are the venture capital companies that invest in start-up and existing businesses, the investing public who benefit from the tax credits and the SME s that receive equity injections. The Ministry of Trade and Industry has oversight of the VCIP.

About Investing Investing one’s money is generally a matter of weighing three factors: risk, return and time. Risk is a way to describe the fluctuations (or volatility) in the rate of return and the degree to which the rate of return will go up or down. Return is the earnings and gains on one’s capital over a measured period of time. Time is the length of time an investor plans to maintain an investment, and it helps to evaluate the appropriateness of an investment’s level of risk and return. Finally, an investor should look at diversification as part of his or her investment strategy. This will include investments across a spectrum of asset classes (i.e. stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.), domiciled both locally and internationally, and in varying currencies.

Harnessing energy for success
BP Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) is a member of the BP Group and one of the leading companies in Trinidad and Tobago’s energy sector. With 13 offshore production platforms, our combined oil and gas output is over 450,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily. We are the country’s largest hydrocarbon producer, accounting for about 60% or two-thirds of the nation’s oil and gas production. Although owned by two international operating companies (BP - 70% and Repsol - 30%) our company has a distinctively national identity, outlook and character. Our operations are responsible for the employment of more than 2,000 persons directly and indirectly, through contractors and independent operators. BPTT’s hydrocarbon production virtually doubled during the last five years, with natural gas accounting for close to 90% of this growth. Gas sales average approximately 2.5 billion standard cubic feet daily. About 60% of our natural gas is exported as LNG - the major portion of which goes to the United States. The other 40% is sold for use as fuel or feedstock for local industry. BPTT believes that the key to long-range sustainability is building local expertise in all areas of the national petroleum industry – from exploration for oil and gas to the design and construction of platforms and the installation of pipelines. We continue to develop local capability through our investments in education and enterprise development. BPTT facilitated the birth of Trinidad and Tobago’s local offshore platform fabrication industry through the
extensive use of in-country expertise to build the first offshore platform ever designed and constructed with over 40% local input. Following the commissioning of the Cannonball platform in 2005, four further platforms, Mango, Cashima, Savonette and Serrette were also locally designed and constructed with over 80% of the labour performed by Trinidad and Tobago nationals. In the field of social development, bpTT works closely with community organizations, the people and the government creating mutually beneficial relationships. Our strongest focus is on interventions in education, arts and culture, environmental preservation, enterprise development and capacity building. We are, for example, closely involved with the development of national skills in engineering, petroleum geosciences, and other areas of study at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). Another outstanding example of our company’s commitment to education is the Mayaro Resource Centre – a former employee’s recreational facility which has been converted into a virtual campus, already successfully addressing the needs of this rural community to tertiary levels. We are of course committed to safety in our operations and protection of the environment. Our commitment may be summed up simply: “ No accidents, no harm to people, and no damage arising from the environmental impact of our operations, through ongoing training programmes and the reduction of waste, emission and discharges."
