P7 Transition Day

We had such a great time yesterday, with our soon-to-be S1s at the Lagoons in Musselburgh. Our P7s really did rise to the challenges they were given, and a lot of new friendships were made along the way.

Thank you to the many staff and friends of PL who made this possible, and we now can month!

Girls’ Rugby Festival

On Monday 29 May we travelled with 11 Preston Lodge Girls to Leith Academy to play in their Girls’ Rugby Festival. Having established our girls’ team in January, we have been steadily developing as a group, and it was fantastic to get our first opportunity to play competitive touch rugby fixtures. This was a historic day as the first ever Preston Lodge High School Girls Rugby Team took to the pitch to represent the school.

We began the glorious sunny day by travelling on the 124 bus to Abbeyhill and walking down Easter Road to Leith Academy. Our hosts gave a warm welcome and the matches started shortly after 10:30am. In our first match we competed against a well established Leith team and came away with a narrow defeat, but gained a lot of confidence. Our second match was against a very strong Edinburgh Harlequins team but this did not dampen the girls spirits. We then faced St Augustine’s High School and had an excellent match, concluding our first victory, and at this point the girls were clearly gaining confidence with each match they played. Our last match was against Drummond High School where the girls managed to pick up their second win of the day, with some excellent running rugby.

The girls were a credit to Preston Lodge throughout the day and have now had their first taste of playing rugby against other schools. We hope to see our Girls’ Rugby grow from strength to strength over the coming years. Thank you to PLRFC for their continued support and to East Lothian Girls for allowing us to borrow their kit.

A reminder that girls’ rugby is open to everyone from S1-S6 and you are welcome to come along to training in the PE Dept on a Thursday after school, 3:30pm-4:30pm.

Mentor Programme

This mentor & mentee pair enjoyed a karaoke session this week. Despite only meeting once before, they decided to break the ice by having a singalong together! In future sessions they’re hoping to do more singing and get creative with arts and crafts too.

ASPIRE Programme

This week on ASPIRE we were at Edinburgh College, Granton Campus in the Construction Department. The students worked well as team to create a production line, making cement moulds out of timer.

Youth Achievement Award John Muir

During Schools Of John Muir students learn about conservation and work on a few projects around school, including litter picking to clean up our halls, identifying insects that live in our fields, and building bug hotels to encourage more pollinators to live in our garden. Students then wrote articles about their experience:

'We built a bug hotel, which I thought was really cool...I plan to take my hotel home and place it up a bush in my garden and keep checking on what turns up.' -

'When we were litter picking we mainly focused on helping the environment around our school. I hope future S2s continue to help keep the school clean and care about our environment.' - Denver

'People just throw their litter on the ground even when the bins right next to them...You should litter pick because it isn't hard to do and can be fun.' - Murray

'We caught [a spider] then we looked at it under the microscope. It was scary and really fun.' - Hannah

Thanks to all my students and I hope you keep up with helping keep our school clean!

Chemistry

Teach the Teacher

The last of our NQT sessions was in Maths. Mrs McGregor refreshed our memories about BIDMAS by getting us to solve a Scooby Doo mystery using our Maths skills. We learned a fun song to help us remember the rules and enjoyed Maths shortbread (made by our mum). What a fun time we all had!

These lunchtime sessions have been great and we are so lucky to have had such a great group of NQTs with us this year. We are going to miss them next year for sure!

Aspire

The Aspire group were taking part in their Construction course last week at Granton. Last week they were having a go at bricklaying. All the boys really enjoyed it, and learnt a lot from the lecturer. They have a good understanding of why they have to wear their PPE, and really got stuck into it!

Financial Support Available to Families

Clothing Grants

Some families are eligible for a Clothing Grant. If this may apply to you, please visit the Free School Meals and Clothing Grants area of the East Lothian Council website for further information. If you would like some help completing these forms, support is available on the East Lothian Council website, or email admin@prestonlodge.elcschool.org.uk. We will be happy to help you.

Community Fund

A combination of corporate funding secured by the Preston Lodge Learning Foundation, and money from our Pupil Equity Fund means that we are able to offer immediate support to all families who need it, breaking down financial barriers to learning. This year we have also been delighted to receive generous support for school uniform costs for specific students from the Preston Seton Gosford Area Partnership.

This Community Fund is available to all families, and we very much encourage families to apply for a confidential, quick grant if they need support. Grants are expected to be in the region of £10 to £50, but all applications are considered on an individual basis. Applications can be made by students, families, staff, and members of the wider community.

An application form is available on school’s website here and please email admin@prestonlodge.elcschool.org.uk or call 01875 811170if you have any questions.
