Vintage Inspired We coined this issue’s theme “Vintage Elegance” because whenever I think of vintage I instantly think of elegance. This issue is a definite culmination of a vintage, elegance and the timeless nature of the good ole days.

Welcome to V3 of Pretty Pear Bride Magazine, the Fall Issue. In this issue we wanted the theme to be Vintage.

I love anything and everything Vintage. I have alwasy thought of myself as some who needed to be a young woman growing up in the 60s and 70s. I loved the fashions, the entertaining just for the fun of it and don’t forget the calm laid back nature of everyone. I decided to do the cover shoot with my favorite photographer, Julie of Foskett Creative and her team of vendors from Arizona. Thanks a million times over for all your help with making this cover another amazing success!

s a bride to be, you want everything immaculate for the big day; prince charming and the whole fairytale wedding right? So what’s missing? Jewelry...

When shopping for bridal jewelry nothing but the best should be considered, only the best for our soon to be brides and bridal party, right? This month we’ve gone VINTAGE!

Nothing says vintage like pearls because pearls add a touch of royalty to that special occasion.

Believe it or not, pearls are a girl’s best friend especially on her wedding day. Vintage jewelry is not only a favorite choice for weddings but it’s an everyday trend.

Regardless of the color choices for your wedding, pearls can be incorporated to give your special day a standing ovation. Vintage

jewelry should play an important role in the wedding but it should not steal the show from the wedding dress or for that matter the wedding itself. Both the dress and jewelry should complement each other.

LaNette Kincaide is currently the owner of Just Pearlz, a jewelry, accessory and fashion consultant company. LaNette earned her Associate’s degree from the Tarrant County Community College and a Bachelor’s degree from Texas Wesleyan University Since opening Just Pearlz, LaNette has been featured in Crave Fort Worth, Alive Magazine, and Taste Texas Magazine. The Absence of Chilvary

D

uring an era when a gesture spoke volumes, chivalry thrived. Initially adopted as a knight’s code of ethics, specific rules to live by existed; serious and purpose driven. These middle ages warriors sought valor in protecting their country, fellow man and the honor of a woman.

In reflecting on history, the contrast to the sign of our current times is so overtly present.

Chivalry has fast become like Ferris Bueller in that scene where his teacher calls his name incessantly, to no avail: absent!

Understand this is not a brow-beating man piece. I have many respectfully charming, well mannered gentlemen I call friends and family in my immediate circle. To them I say: Thank you for walking the talk. But if we spoke candidly and objectively we’d agree to recognize a void. The truth is, some of our gallant men of years past, have now taken to jumping in front of women to get on elevators and through office doors.

That pause to let you by has plainly stopped becoming the norm. In its stead not only are we discounted, but sometimes ignored.

I recently read an article on dating where the author said: “…women are more concerned about complicated things like manners…”

I’m sure you could easily imagine what was in my thought cloud after fully digesting that statement. Is it safe to say that the microwave age has moved so far so fast, that something as simple as holding a door is now a nuisance or dare I say, a hassle?

And in pondering the status of things, these questions are begged: Has the nature of our counterparts’ image of us changed with the steady momentum of subjects such as feminism and girl power? Could it be more deeply rooted in how we as women present ourselves to the world? Maybe still, do we as new-aged, free (sometimes dismissive) thinkers only receive what we accept?

y photographer made me feel so comfortable and confident in my body. When doing a shoot that involves so much vulnerability you need someone who will make you feel comfortable and she definitely did. My beautifying team did an utterly amazing job on the hair and makeup, transforming me into another person. The inner diva came out the moment I looked in the mirror. Anybody doing a boudoir shoot needs to have an amazing team like this to create the image that can be photographed. I encourage all you readers out there to release your inner diva. PreNup: Is it for You?

Congratulations on your engagement!

Being a bride is one of the most exciting times in a woman’s life. Now that you found Mr. Right, in addition to finding the perfect gown, selecting wedding bands and planning a wedding, brides should consider if a prenuptial agreement makes sense for them. How should you ask for a Prenup or respond if you are presented with one?

The first step is to assess your financial situation.

Do you or your fiancé have an interest in or accrued significant value in any of the following?

• Real estate; Foskett Creative

• Non-real estate assets with a value in excess of $50,000; • A business entity; • Retirement assets; or •

Pension/profit sharing or any other form of employment related savings account.

Do you earn more than your fiancé annually or expect your income to increase after marriage? Do you (or your spouse) plan to pursue an advanced degree while the other works? Will one of you give up your career to raise children? Will all or part of your estate go to someone other than your spouse? Do you stand to inherit family wealth or are you the beneficiary of a trust? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then you should consider a Prenuptial Agreement.

Laws vary from state to state, but be sure to give yourself enough time to prepare and negotiate a Prenuptial Agreement. Best practices suggest having a signed agreement before invitations are mailed. At least six months before the big day and, perhaps before discussing it with your fiancé, you should consult with a family law attorney to understand the laws of your state and determine what type of Prenuptial Agreement is right for you (i.e. limited to excluding a business from the marital pot or addressing all of the assets, liabilities and support claims/rights that you and your soon-to-be-spouse possess now or may acquire in the future).

Depending on the laws of your state, premarital assets, including a spouse’s business, do not become part of the marital pot, but the increase in value that accumulates on such assets from the date of marriage to the date of separation or the filing of a divorce complaint may be subject to division for purposes of property distribution in divorce.

People’s reactions to the concept of a Prenuptial Agreement are divisive – some assume you are suggesting the marriage will fail before you ever say “I do.” A more progressive view is that creating a Prenuptial Agreement, though not romantic, may actually strengthen your relationship and improve communication once you tie the knot. Sooner or later you and your fiancé will be talking about finances. Most psychologists and legal experts agree that the fairest time to figure out the financial ramifications in the event of divorce is when you are most in love and happy with each other.

My Bride’s Keeper

mbarking on a new life, to some degree is a big deal. And for a female, when she gets married, assigning her bridal party roles is imperative. She has to have great connections with each person and ultimately want them to be part of her celebration.

As a bridal party member, you have in affect signed on to be your bride’s keeper. She will need you from time to time. And although you will not be the bottom line decision maker, there are a few things to keep in mind…

Do: Be mindful Always remember this is the Bride and Groom’s day.

Well the bride’s, but we want to be inclusive! Your focus must be on the big day’s major attraction.

Don’t: Be a Pre-Madonna You are not a priority. Try not making the mistake of being demanding or overly opinionated as it relates to your dress, your gift, your anything. With all the pressure already looming, the last thing the bride-tobe needs is another reason to be stressed.

Do: Be resourcefulAnything you can do to help, you should. If you know of a great hairdresser, make-up artist, event stylist or seamstress for alterations or possible dress making, let your bride-to-be know. The more options she has, the less time she has to spend researching.

Don’t: Be a non-contributor The bride-to-be will need help with even the simplest things. If you’re not sure about service referrals, offer your own assistance. You don’t have to be a creative master to drop the dress off at the cleaners or set an appointment. Every little bit helps.

Do: Be an ear There are going to be times when the bride-to-be feels overwhelmed or aggravated. She’s going to want to vent and you just may be the outlet she needs.

Don’t: Be dismissive Make yourself available for anything your bride-to-be needs (within reason of course). If she calls you in a fit of rage or tears, never add fuel to the fire. Exert your best effort at being objective, calm and reassuring. She will love you for it when everything’s all said and done.

All the planning that goes into one special day can get hectic. Playing your part as the friend she chose to share this day with is a great opportunity. And with great opportunity comes great responsibility.

By Marie Garza TLiz’s Daughter is a grass roots non-profit organization in St. Paul Minnesota. Liz’s Daughter was founded by Marie Garza; she named the organization after her mother (Liz) a tribute to a mother from her daughter.

Our mission to reduce the impact and occurrence of domestic violence in our communities by raising awareness, educate individuals, professionals, communities, on how to stop domestic violence from happening and how to help those who have been hurt by violence and empower them to break the cycle. *Implementing projects and programs such as our teen dating violence awareness initiative, advocacy,and partnering with key community stakeholders to find a solution to this problem affecting 1-4 women & 1-3 teens.

ear Pat, (owner of the Glass Slipper Bridal) I wanted to say thank you, but no ordinary thank you card would do. To say a simple “Thank You” for your donation of a wedding dress used to bring attention and awareness to domestic violence.

I was in need of a dress not just an ordinary dress, THE DRESS. In search of a dress, for a cause so near and dear to my heart. I called you and from the very beginning of our conversation I had no doubt I called the right place.

I am Liz’s Daughter the creator of a wedding themed event, The Twin Cities Brides March against Domestic Violence while this dress would not be worn to get married in, none the less it was for a special occasion.

Every year in the month of June dozens upon dozens of women, girls & men, yes men! Walk through our city streets in wedding dresses to raise attention and awareness to domestic violence & teen dating violence.

I am a full figured women and it’s

hard to find a dress that celebrates our curves embodies everything you dream of and makes you feel beautiful and confident. I came to you and saw the amazing collection of Bridal gowns. I knew that I would be able to achieve just that. You let me look at all your wedding dresses, none of them where of limits you made me feel like a princess able to pick any dress I wanted.

The dress I picked is more than just a dress. As I slip into the dress I become a different person. I carry with me the memories and stories of those taken far too soon. I must speak for them. I must speak to and for their family members who are dealing with a loss unimaginable.

This dress gave me the confidence to speak in front of over 200 participants and supporters.

I dedicated my dress to all women & girls who will never get their chance at a happily ever after. The ones who will never have their mom and dad give them away on their

wedding a day, a dream every parent has for their little girl.

This dress is more than a dress. A beautiful dress that you donated without hesitation. It wasn’t an old out of date wedding dress it was a BEAUTIFUL dress that you could have sold for thousands of dollars, but instead you choose to donate it.

Your inviting personality, warm spirit made me feel like I mattered, my event mattered. I can never repay you for the generosity you showed me, but I can let everyone know of a special bridal shop owner we have here in Minnesota. Pat at the Glass Slipper Bridal, Thank you anyone in search of a wedding dress is lucky to have you right beside them, you truly care. If we only had more businesses and people like you, what a world this would be. Thank you for believing in my cause and most of all thank you for being you.

The Brides March is our biggest fundraiser we have to help fund our outreach programs and continue our much needed work in the community. The concept of a Brides was inspired by a story of a young woman who was murdered just hours before her wedding at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. Her wedding dress has become a dramatic symbol of Domestic Violence. We march in wedding dresses to bring attention and awareness to Domestic Violence and all who have been killed or injured in domestic violence incidents. I was engaged in April of this year and like many newly engaged women I told my family and we immediately went into planning mode. I was telling my fiancée what was going on with the plans and my parents agreed to help pay. I thought all was going well until my fiancée decides that he doesn’t want to get married until we buy a house. He told me he was looking for the houses and we were supposed to go look at a few but that never happen. Then about a month ago, he called me from work and tells me to “start packing that he found us a house and we would be moving on Saturday” this was on a Tuesday. I later learned he did not buy a house…. it was a rental. Once I saw the house, I was very disappointed and would’ve never chosen this particular home for myself and my daughter. My family and friends have asked me if we are going to get married now or if we are still waiting to buy a house after moving in to the house we are in with over a year lease. And to be honest I have not talked to him about it, I do not know how to start the conversation about it Signed , Moved and confused

Dear Moved and Confused, First and foremost when you have made the decision to marry someone a marriage is a partnership and decisions should be made together. Unless, the two of you have decided that one of you would make all of the decisions and if you are engaged and living with someone you should not be confused as to what your next step is going to be.

When the two of you got engaged it should have been made clear as to exactly when the two you were going to get married.

You should have been a part of the process for choosing the rental property. My question is, did the two of you sign the lease or just him and why you were not a part of that decision. It seems to me he has taken over 100% of the decision making in this relationship and if this is something you have not agreed upon then you need to speak up, ask questions and let your voice be heard.
