Action for Cancer Awareness Awards

Since 1993, the Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program’s Action for Cancer Awareness Awards luncheon has honored congressional spouses, journalists and other advocates for using their platforms to educate the public on cancer prevention and early detection.

On September 26, 2019, a bipartisan, bicameral audience of congressional members and spouses, as well as leaders in the cancer community, gathered at the Library of Congress to celebrate the 27th annual awards and the 2019 honorees under the theme of “Prevention at Every Age.”

Congressional Families Leadership Award: Amanda Soto, spouse of Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL), and LeeAnn Johnson, spouse of Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio)

Ms. Soto and Ms. Johnson are active members of the Program’s Executive Council. Their activities include hosting educational and awareness events in their home districts.

Excellence in Cancer Awareness Award: Patrick Dempsey

Mr. Dempsey is an actor and producer, as well as the founder of The Dempsey Center, which provides free services and resources for patients, survivors, families and caregivers dealing with cancer.

The Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program® works year-round to equip members and spouses—through educational seminars and webinars, events, and op-eds and social media posts—to take the message of cancer prevention and early detection back to their communities and constituents.
