president’s message
The 2024 Golf season is nearly upon us. I trust that, like me, you are all very excited to play some golf, re-connect with friends, and enjoy some well-deserved time outside in the sunshine. The board, senior leadership, and all employees have been working diligently over the winter to provide an amazing offering to enhance our experience at Priddis Greens.
This newsletter contains a number of our enhancements to the Club’s programming this year, along with fulsome reports from each board and operational committee.
I am delighted to introduce our two new senior leaders at Priddis Greens. Chris Prodahl, our new course superintendent, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his role. Joseph Laskowski, our new Clubhouse Manager, also comes with a strong background in his field. I encourage you to extend a warm welcome to both of them and take the opportunity to get to know them.
Please enjoy the start of the 2024 golf season, and I look forward to seeing you all at the Club.

We hope everyone has had a great winter and now looking forward to a great summer at Priddis Greens.
Looking forward, I wish to thank Gordon Keon, Doug Hamatani, Will Grisdale, and Dave Evans for their continued support of the committee and their willingness to remain members for the ensuing year.
The past few months have been quiet for the Committee as the Board of Directors focuses on certain Club priorities and how they best fit and enhance the membership experience. The focus is to develop a long-range plan for the golf course, practice facilities, clubhouse and additional food and beverage amenities. This will be developed through consultations with members/focus groups.
It is a very important time for our Club as our aging facilities require upgrading and maintenance to ensure that we maintain an above-average experience for current and future members.
Twelve membership redemptions/sales occurred between January 1 and March 31. Please welcome these new members and encourage them to get involved in leagues and tournaments.

BOARD STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION
The Board spent two days in early March at the Club planning for 2024 and beyond. Some of the desired outcomes of the sessions were:
• Come to a consensus on key strategic initiatives.
• Determine a roadmap to achieve objectives.
• Determine resources needed from outside of the organization.
• Discuss the Club’s current identity and desire for the future.
• Define committee roles and how they can best support the board.
Management and the core employee group also spent time with the Board, presenting Management’s key objectives and focus areas and explaining how the Club’s Purpose, Mission, and Values are woven into the core of our great team.
Management and the core employee group also spent time with the Board, presenting Management’s key objectives and focus areas and explaining how the Club’s Purpose, Mission, and Values are woven into the core of our great team.
The top strategic priorities identified at the retreat to help develop the Board and objectives related to the LRP Committee included:
1. Master Plan Development
2. Member Communications
To address these priorities, the Board has drafted the following initial objectives:
1. Explore engaging GGA (consultant) to assist with the development of a communications plan and a fulsome Master Plan outline
2. Develop 2024 Communications Plan
3. Develop a fulsome Master Plan Outline
4. Proposal to existing landowners regarding the 80 acres adjacent to Raven 1 and 2
PROJECTS: CLUBHOUSE and THE NEST
Our GM’s recent email update provided the membership with a summary of where we are with the potential major projects that have been discussed regarding the Raven’s Nest and Clubhouse rejuvenation. As mentioned in Chad’s communication, while we will still focus on the area surrounding the Clubhouse and Raven’s Nest, we need to provide the membership with the vision of how that all fits together in a complete Master Plan for the entire Club.
CONSULTANTS
We are exploring utilizing Global Golf Advisors (GGA) as a consultant to help with member engagement through strategic planning surveys and focus groups, thus assisting in moving things forward. GGA is a well-regarded consulting firm and trusted advisor to many successful golf courses and private clubs internationally. They are intimately familiar with the western Canadian private club market, having executed strategic assignments for long-range planning with several golf and private clubs in our region that have requirements that overlap with the needs of Priddis Greens Golf & Country Club.
In addition, we will be asking GGA to provide an analysis of our internal membership, including the equity structure and sponsored sales mechanism, the external market and capital and financial review. This will help shape our decision making as we inevitably progress towards some significant capital improvements necessary to keep the Club relevant and sustainable for the long term.
POTENTIAL LAND ACQUISITION
The current owners of the 80 acres of land adjacent to the Club, which has been the subject of discussion for some time, have approached the Club to indicate that they now want to move forward with selling the property. Management has been working with the Board to develop a proposal for presentation to the landowners that, if accepted, would allow us to complete significant due diligence exercises and then seek approval from the membership prior to making any commitment to acquire the land. This, of course, would have a significant impact on the more complete Master Plan for the Club.
This is an exciting time for the Club with great potential for the future. We need to take the time to develop a complete Master Plan, with a heightened focus on the area surrounding the Clubhouse and Raven’s Nest, initially and to engage the membership in the decisions that would allow us to forge ahead with the commitment and confidence of the Club’s members.

It is always a special time of year when we see green again on the course, and the anticipation of another great golf season at our beautiful course is virtually upon us.
COMMITTEE MEMBER UPDATE
Tim Wardrop has joined the committee. In addition, continuing are Todd Heavisides, Brad Trumble, Rob Hozjan and Victor Lough. We wish to welcome Tim. And look forward to benefitting from the collective experience and contributions from this talented group of people. Board members Michael Hodgson and Ken Baron continue as Co-Chairs.
Over the past number of newsletters, we have communicated the current state of the club’s funding needs, differentiating between operating and capital and the approach believed necessary to position for the long-term financial health of your club. To summarize those communications, the committee was of the view that two fundamental actions needed to be taken. One was the retirement of the existing debt (which related to past maintenance expenditures such as greens resurfacing) and started to accumulate capital for future long-term non-maintenance capital needs.
DEBT
We are pleased to confirm that the previous balance of outstanding debt was retired in 2023. This removes related future cashflow impediments to service and repays that debt.
CAPITAL LEVY
Last fall, the committee recommended to the Club’s Board to implement a capital levy commencing in 2024 to accumulate reserve funds to pay for necessary future capital requirements. As you know, the Board accepted and approved this recommendation, and the levy has been implemented. In the committee’s view, this is a critical step towards a bright future. The membership supported the 2024 Capital Plan with a positive vote at the February SGM. Thank you!
ANNUAL AUDIT
Baker Tilly, the Club’s appointed auditors have completed their review and analysis of the financial records of the club and prepared draft financial statements. We are pleased to be able to report that these statements were circulated to the committee for its review and comments. There was a unanimous acceptance without reservation for the work done. These statements have been made available to the general membership in conjunction with the AGM in May. As an editorial comment, the Club is fortunate to have the services of its Financial Manager, Darcy Michailuck. Darcy provides a high level of expertise, integrity, and trustworthiness to his key role on the management team and deserves our unwavering support.
FUTURE
The long-term health of the club depends on providing the exceptional golf experience that we all enjoy today to always continue. Besides the obvious benefit to us, the existing membership today, it is necessary to attract new members in the future. Important to achieving this is the reinvestment of capital in the Club and protecting the Club’s brand to maintain value. The need for future capital has been and will con
tinue to be top of mind. Our list of capital projects is being reviewed and refined. Included will be the consideration for aspirational projects that could secure a bright future for the club. Obviously, more information on this will be forthcoming as and when appropriate. On protecting the brand, one of the most significant impediments is the under valuation of a membership that is taking place by virtue of discounted pricing on the grey market (Kijiji and other marketplace forums). While these sales may seem to be beneficial to the individual seller due to their expediency, the balance of the membership is adversely affected. The process of the Board setting a valuation is done by considering market competition AND additional capital contributions by existing members. The Board, by increasing the value expectation is respecting that the membership has provided more capital. The undercutting of the Board set value ignores this. An orderly sale of memberships at the club’s valuation would significantly benefit all members over time.
The committee will be asked to examine certain aspects of this issue in concert with the membership committee and examine future funding formulas and approaches as project definitions and quantifications are developed.
We look forward to a great golf season and hope to see you on the course.

priddis greens charity classic
The Charity Classic committee has begun planning for this year’s event, which is, amazingly, the 26th version of the tournament. Plans are underway for another spectacular gala evening at the Azuridge Estate Hotel on August 20th, with the tournament running on August 21st and 22nd. Team registration has now opened. This year, the event will be limited to a maximum of 32 teams, so register your team early to ensure your place in this very important fundraiser for the Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre. This year, non-golfers can sign up to attend just the gala event at Azuridge. There are also plenty of ways to get involved in a volunteer role and, of course, to donate to this extremely important men’s health cause. See our website, PGCharityClassic.com, for more information.

We are on the brink of another fantastic golf season at Priddis Greens! I can’t wait to see you all out on the course, enjoying the game and the beautiful surroundings.
I would like to share a couple of my personal goals for the year with you. The first one is improved communication on strategic and “hot-button” topics. To achieve this, I will produce a monthly written update that will touch on the most important topics at the Club so you can stay informed and connected. Hopefully, you read the first edition earlier this month; if not, it is available here with all other archived Club communications. My updates will cover topics such as governance, strategic planning, club funding and membership models, consultant and committee updates, and, of course, projects and other important topics. If you would like to request that a particular topic be covered, please contact me directly. Additionally, I have committed to scheduling time every week to golf and engage with members at the Club. The second goal I would like to share is to complete an updated master plan for the Clubhouse and surrounding 100-meter area so we can chart a clear path forward that meets the needs of the Club now and for the future. Many steps are required to achieve this, including engaging a consultant, architects, and design professionals to develop designs, timelines, and cost estimates. We will certainly engage members through committees, surveys, and focus groups.
During the winter season, our core team always spends a great deal of time planning for the upcoming year and finding ways to improve the member and employee experience. This past winter, we focused heavily on improving our skills and toolkit with regards to building a great team of employees. Every year, we recruit, hire, onboard, train, and then manage a large number of seasonal employees who have varying degrees of commitment to our business and alignment with our culture. Finding the right people and setting them up for success is critical, and we knew we could improve the development of our key people in this area. One of our winter projects was to ensure we had a well-developed set of objectives that all departments and employees could feel a connection to and know how their role can make a positive difference for the Club. Below is an outline of the four club-wide objectives we are committed to achieving in 2024.
1. Build a Healthy, High-Performing Team: It is essential to ensure that we have the right people in the right roles who are onboarded, oriented, trained, aligned, and ready to perform.
2. Creating Clarity & Alignment: It is vital that all employees know their roles, who they report to, who they are responsible for, and how their role impacts the success of the Club. This includes knowledge and implementation of our Purpose, Mission, and Values.
3. Financial Performance: Managing operating and capital budgets, developing the long-range master capital plan, and conducting needs assessments for critical infrastructure.
4. Member Delight: We can only achieve a high level of success in this, our main objective, if we succeed with the first three.
I am confident that you will notice our team’s commitment to excellence and that our focus on these objectives will translate to great experiences for you and your guests. Thank you for your continued support of the Club, and I hope you enjoy the wonderful golf season ahead.
Chad Thomlinson General Manager & PGA Executive Professionalgreen committee
Before the recent snowfall, about half of the golf courses were clear of snow and available for inspection. Initial observations of the putting greens and tee boxes look excellent, with minimal damage noted. We remain cautiously optimistic as we await the unveiling of the tarped greens after the cold spell passes. There are scattered instances of snow mold disease, primarily affecting the fairways. It appears that the effectiveness of the plant protection fungicide diminished between application and the permanent snowfall, leading to a shortened lifespan of the product. The full extent of the issue is still uncertain, but we are prepared to take the necessary steps to address it when conditions permit.
We are evaluating significant vole damage and will formulate a mitigation plan for the spring. We are pleased with our leadership team for the 2024 season. There has been one change in our senior full-time team: Luther Jurke has left the Club to join the City of Calgary as Assistant Superintendent. Luther was a valued team member during his six-year tenure, primarily on the Raven Course. We thank Luther for his professionalism, hard work, and dedication to enriching lives through golf at Priddis Greens. As part of our ongoing succession planning, we are excited to announce Dan Gleason’s promotion to Assistant Superintendent of the Raven Course. Dan, originally from Okotoks, has been with us for three years, previously serving as the Senior Intern of the Raven Course. He is eager to advance his career with us.
All 84 team members required to operate our facility have been hired. Our return rate is approximately 75%, which is a great start to the season.
Project Updates:
• The Turf Care team is currently preparing the area around Raven #2 and Pumphouse #3 for the remaining work on the front nine irrigation renovation, which will begin once the ground frost has thawed. Approximately 10 to 14 days of work are estimated in these areas, and it will not significantly affect member play.
• Bunker renovations are scheduled to commence late in the golf season, with the installation of Better Billy Bunkers planned for Hawk #1 (front greenside) and Raven #11. Bunker removal will occur on Hawk #1 (back left greenside), Raven #5 (fairway), and Raven #16 (back greenside). These initiatives mirror our long-range master plan in conjunction with our course architect, reduce maintenance, and improve playability.
• Replacement of the bridge on Hawk #17 has been completed.
On a personal note, I am thrilled to embark on my 13th season at the Club, but this time as your Golf Course Manager. Priddis Greens holds standards and expectations that match my own, and I am eager to continue enriching lives through golf for our members and guests.

We are excited about several new initiatives for 2024 that have been implemented for the season. Our focus will remain on improving tee time access, continual member engagement, and providing a safe and rewarding experience for all our employees.
TEE TIME BOOKING INFORMATION
This winter, we completed a thorough review of our tee sheet booking system and the related procedures and policies to assess what changes could improve the booking experience and enhance access for members and guests. In collaboration with our tee sheet software provider, Jonas, we have identified process deficiencies that may have been exploited to gain an unfair advantage when booking tee times. Implementing the changes detailed below should eliminate the workaround utilized by some members.
The first issue identified by Jonas was the potential use of scripts to auto-book times. This was made possible via the preview of the tee sheet prior to 6:45 AM The ability to preview the tee sheet from 5:45 AM to 6:45 AM three days in advance before booking has been eliminated. The tee sheet when preview of the tee sheet will now go live at 6:45 AM for member bookings.
The second issue identified by Jonas was the use of extending the booking window by clicking refresh multiple times. This allowed groups of members to hold multiple tee times and members to hold a tee time for an extended period to circumvent the member-only booking window from 6:45 AM to 7:45 AM. Members will have three minutes to complete a tee time booking.
Reducing the number of no-shows and late cancellations is an important part of increasing tee time access for everyone. In 2023, there were over 1,400 recorded tee-time no-shows (total players, not groups). We need all members to help by improving their diligence in cancelling with appropriate notice to reduce wasted tee times. The Golf Operations team will diligently follow up daily with those who cancel less than 180 minutes before their tee time or fail to show up.
enough to warrant tournament status but require planning and pre-booking. Our Club has historically provided this option to our members, but it was not formally communicated. To provide transparency, consistency, and fairness, we have included parameters for hosting a small group at the Club in the update to Policy Statement #3. There will be constraints and variables that require consideration with each request, and we will do our best to accommodate them. All group booking request decisions will be subject to the availability of resources and will be made at the Head Golf Professional’s discretion.
TOURNAMENT & LEAGUE UPDATE
Through our review of tee time access, which is always more challenging in the fall months, we identified the extensive number of leagues and tournaments we host as an area where improvements can be made for the betterment of access for all members. Our objective is to ensure every member event is memorable and well-attended. Changes to our leagues and tournaments for 2024 are as follows:
• All Leagues will end at the end of August.
• No league play on holidays and holiday weekends.
GOLF OPERATIONS TEAM UPDATE
Having the majority of the Professional Team return will certainly help with the continuity of our operation for 2024. Matt Bean has been promoted to full-time; Matt has proven to be a true leader within the Golf Operations team. We have hired a new Golf Professional AJ McCoy; AJ will be relocating from Australia. AJ’s wife Kelsey is Canadian and looks forward to setting roots in Alberta! AJ worked at Stewart Creek a few years ago while playing the Canadian Tour; AJ is an accomplished player and teacher and looks forward to learning more about Golf Operations as he believes that is his true passion. Both Josh Berze and Geordie Miller accepted positions at the Earl Grey Country Club and Calgary Golf & Country Club, respectively, and we thank them for their contributions and wish them the best.
Brad Cooke will continue to lead the team as our Golf Operations Manager; Victor Nikolaou will manage the Lady’s Golf portfolio; Matt Bean will manage our Men’s Golf portfolio; AJ McCoy will manage both the Junior and Mixed Golf portfolios.
Jennifer Ha will spend more time at Priddis Greens as an independent Teaching Professional after taking most of 2023 to be a mother to their daughter Charlie; Eric Locke will be returning as our Manager of Player Development; and Jay Myren will be returning as a Teaching Professional. sional. I believe that we have one of the most knowledgeable and talented groups of Professionals in Canada. If you need help with coaching, instruction, club fitting, course management, or advice, we are all here to help.
Kailee Laugher shared the great news with us in December that she is pregnant and will be going on maternity leave in May. We are all very excited for her and wish her the very best in this new chapter of her life as a mother-to-be. Her contributions will be missed. We are in the process of temporarily filling this position. Golf Operations has some familiar and new faces. Jimmy Farrell returns as Outside Services Manager, and Wyatt Ferris, Logan Schultz, Bert Stassen, Adam James, Katie Landers, and Heron Sward round out our Golf Operations team.
As mentioned, our focus will remain on improving tee time access, continual member engagement and providing a safe and rewarding experience for all our employees. We are looking forward to a great year and are here to help you to make sure it’s a memorable experience for you.
house committee
2024 is a new year with a new team of managers. Our key objectives this year will be to improve upon last years achievements.
Key focus areas:
• Building a healthy high-performance team in both management and seasonal employees.
• Foster inclusivity, positive energy, and developing trust.
• Improving consistency, quality, knowledge, credibility, and service in all areas related to food & beverage.
The overall presentation of the room will change as we have opened the main dining area to showcase its beauty and spectacular views. No longer will the room be broken up. We have also brought back tablecloths to add to the overall ambience of The Grandview.
Chef Epifanio Tubbali and his culinary team have been collaborating on menu development to bring about a solid menu programme that we hope the membership will be excited to have around for the entirety of the 2024 season. This will allow for improved training, quality and consistency coming out of the kitchen. The challenge we face this season is that there will be a new core of food & beverage managers in the senior roles, and the learning curve requires time to adapt. That said, we believe this solid new group of intelligent, motivated young professionals will learn and adapt quickly to their new surroundings.
Tatjana Miller has been promoted to Restaurant Manager. After three seasons of mentorship under Franck and Catherine, Tatjana has shown the commitment, knowledge, and perseverance to lead The Grandview team into the 2024 season with confidence. Joining Tatjana in The Grandview is Shae Pedersen as the Assistant Restaurant Manager. Shae spent her inaugural 2023 year in our Golf Shop and has begun transitioning into her new role for the up-and-coming season. We are excited to see her positive, upbeat energy supporting Tatjana in her new role while exemplifying that infectious, upbeat energy that she brought to the pro shop last year.
Sadie Wilkie, the Events & Concessions Manager, will round out our new management team. She joins us from Wildrose Brewery, where she has held the position of Events Coordinator for six years. She also worked in 2017 in the Raven’s Nest. Sadie brings a wealth of knowledge to large parties and special events that will translate well into her role.
As previously mentioned, we are working on new menu development, new wines, and the return of the Wine Club and wine dinners for our members. As soon as we get the menu and our team settled, an update on the Wine Club will follow.
Regarding on-course services, we are looking at adding a consistent BBQ and beverage cart service to Hawk #9 four days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays—Sundays 12pm to 6pm) and bringing back the Wednesday night and Saturday morning league buffets.
In the meantime, I look forward to meeting all of you this coming season.
Time to “GOLF & ROLL”!!!
Joseph Laskowski Clubhouse Managerladies’ executive committee
Welcome to all the ladies of Priddis Greens Golf & Country Club! As we start another memorable season, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how grateful I am to be a member of a club that is so welcoming and warm to all new and current members.
We have a full season of scheduled tournaments, leagues, and events that I would like to encourage everyone to consider and participate in. What better way to make new friends, socialize, and share the love of golf.
We have an exceptional group of women who have volunteered again this season to help make our season successful and memorable. The Priddis Greens Ladies’ Golf Executive continues to work hard together to ensure that all events are the best ever! Thank you!
We will start our season off with Spring Bloomers. Last season, we had an all-time record attendance. I’m hoping we can exceed that this season. Let’s start our season off with a bang and make it special and one to remember!
Tuesday and Saturday continue to be our league days. Please remember to sign up early so that you are guaranteed a tee time. Wednesday will not be a paying league day this year but will continue to be a day to get together and play with the gals for fun! Once again, remember to sign up early so you can confirm a tee time for yourself.
Club Championship and Senior Ladies Club Championship are wonderful events to participate in; first and foremost, let’s have fun and enjoy the crowning events.
We have several Interclub events that will continue this season, and we have signed up to participate in 4T4 this year, Country Interclub and Business Interclub. These are great ways to get out and play for our Club at other area golf clubs.
Mixed events are well attended, and our representative from the Ladies’ Executive works hard to help make them great.
The “Mystery Tour” continues to be a mystery, but always a fun day away to test your abilities at a new course with a fabulous group of Priddis Greens ladies!
Our Member Guest Tournament is our grand event to showcase Priddis Greens Golf Country & Country Club! Ladies set the date in your calendar. You and your guests are in for a superb day on the course! There has been a lot of early planning to make this the best ever. Let’s make this a full field of fun!
As always, “Solheim” is a goal for most ladies to participate in as our season comes to a close after accumulating participating points in eligible events over the season. Remember, sign up and designate either Tuesday or Saturday as your qualifying day and play in as many qualifying events as possible; it will be a year of the “Roses!”
As our season comes to a close, we will finish it off with the Fall Classic, a lovely event to say goodbye to a fabulous season. On behalf of the Priddis Greens Ladies’ Golf Executive, I wish everyone a great season of golf, friendship, and fun. Let’s go play some golf!
