Gardening:

A Fun Hobby & Good for Your Health Gardening may be a fun and relaxing way to get in touch with nature, but did you know that it also has plenty of health benefits? Gardening is an activity that’s good for both the mind and body, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Plus, you get to eat the delicious fruits, vegetables and herbs that you grow. So, grab your tools and get in the dirt!

shown to be helpful in reducing the risk of depression.

It only takes a little bit of gardening to work up a sweat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, just 2.5 hours of moderate activity each week can help reduce the risk of many health problems, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes.

When it comes to deciding what to plant, it may be hard to know where to begin. But if you’re new to gardening, keep it simple with produce that’s easy to grow. Santo recommends herbs and greens such as lettuce, kale and collards.

You may not think of gardening as exercise, but all the lifting, shoveling and raking involved definitely counts, says Raychel Santo, MA, senior research program coordinator for the Center for a Livable Future at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Your brain also benefits from time spent in the garden. Being outside in the fresh air and sunshine is an effective way to boost your mood and de-stress. In fact, gardening has

Don’t forget the health benefits that come from the produce you grow. Gardening is a simple way to get more fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet, and you’re sure to appreciate them even more because you grew them.

Santo says these foods are not only easy for first-time gardeners, they are also full of important nutrients. Gardening is also an excellent opportunity to try new healthy foods that will help you and your family become more adventurous eaters. Growing a variety of produce is as fun as it is healthy. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get it right the first time. Gardening requires some patience, but it’s worth it when you get to dig into a plate of your own fresh produce.

Make sure that you have the proper tools and gear for a safe gardening experience. Santo recommends wearing light, long-sleeved shirts and pants and a hat for protection from the sun, as well as slathering on sunscreen. Wearing gardening gloves is a must to keep yourself safe when pulling weeds and carrying out other tasks that could hurt your hands. And don’t forget to wear mosquito repellent. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons encourages gardeners to take regular breaks and drink enough water. Remember, this is exercise. The organization also suggests making the physical activity in gardening as easy as possible, from sitting on a garden stool to getting close to the objects you want to lift to reduce strain. Using a wheelbarrow is helpful for these kinds of tasks. Ask for help if something is too big or

if you’re unfamiliar with certain tools. Soil safety is another thing to keep in mind. Santo notes that especially in urban and suburban areas, soil may be contaminated with heavy metals and other pollutants. Soil could also have tetanus bacteria, which is why it’s so important to wear gloves and stay up on vaccinations. That way, any cuts on your hands won’t get infected. It’s a good idea to get your soil tested before you start gardening.

Creating a Trans-Inclusive Workplace 12

Trans people often experience stigma and discrimination, hostility from others, and pres sure to “manage” their identities in social settings, including the workplace. These experiences can set in motion a host of psychological responses that have devastating consequences for trans individuals’ job satisfaction, turnover intentions, and emotional well-being. Despite growing public awareness of the struggles that trans individuals often face, many employers remain ill-equipped to create policies and workplace cultures that support their trans employees. Fortunately, a growing body of research suggests how they can more effectively attract, retain, and promote the health and success of these workers. Interviews and surveys of more than 1,000 trans people over the past six years reveal four key areas of intervention that can cultivate a more trans-inclusive workplace: (1) basic signs of trans inclusivity involving bathroom use, dress codes, and pronouns; (2) effective support for gender transitions; (3) trans-specific diversity trainings; and (4) interventions to build resiliency.

The First 5 Steps of Decorating a New Home

Moving into a new house is a monumental occasion, but it can be overwhelming for many reasons. Knowing how to decorate your home – and maybe on a budget – can be hard. We’re here for you. In this guide, we lay out the first five steps of decorating a new home so you don’t have to figure it out all on your own.

Prioritize, Evaluate, and Organize Decorating a new home is all about less is more. It is okay to throw away what you don’t need or no longer want. Prioritize a few old treasures you would be lost without and say goodbye to unnecessary junk.

14

Out with the Old, in with the New Once you become a homeowner, your home decor should mature with you. This is an opportunity to discard mismatched kitchenware in place of shiny, organized sets and replace your tattered college dorm posters with galleryworthy wall art. There’s value in keeping mementos from your past in your new home, but developing the maturity of your home’s style is a great way to help you feel like a capable, refined adult.

Fight the Urge to Splurge No matter how confident you feel about purchasing a new piece of furniture, you most likely won’t love it as much in the years to come. Your style will evolve several times as you grow into your new home, so you’ll want to save money so you can decorate later on. Use cheaper furniture pieces as placeholders until you’re certain you know what design style is perfect for you – you’ll be glad you did.

DIY Upgrades Decorating a new house doesn’t always require buying all new things. Rather than purchasing new furniture or decor pieces, upgrade the items you already own with stylish new hardware or paint. Drab kitchen cabinets can be transformed by decorative knobs, and grungy walls can come to life after a fresh coat of paint. Accent the inside of dresser drawers with wallpaper, or paint a unique design on the arms of a basic wooden side table – small upgrades like these will make a difference. Even replacing simple pieces like outlet and light switch covers can make your new home feel cleaner and more like your own space without a massive price tag.

Accents Make the Space Small accent elements will go a long way in personalizing your home’s decor. Throw pillows, floor pillows, and throw blankets are playful, cozy, and can be swapped out or moved whenever you feel like it. Draw attention to the floor by layering vibrant rugs, and make your windows look less bare with a set of flowing curtains. When in doubt, fill empty space with plants – not only will they freshen your new home’s air, but they complement any design style, from the most casual to the most sophisticated.

Exercise and the Brain Exercise Can Improve Learning Written by Dr. John J. Ratey, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, the book explores the connection between exercise and the brain, providing strong evidence that aerobic exercise physically remodels the brain for peak performance on all fronts. Specifically, Dr. Ratey writes that exercise improves learning on three levels: “First, it optimizes your mind-set to improve alertness, attention, and motivation; second, it prepares and encourages nerve cells to bind to one another, which is the cellular basis for logging in new information; and third, it spurs the development of new nerve cells from stem cells in the hippocampus.” In short, not only does exercise help the brain get ready to learn but it actually makes retaining information easier.

Exercise Can Improve Students’ Mental Health Dr. Ratey’s research also shows that exercise can be the best defense against a lot of the common mental health issues that students struggle with. Such as, but not litmited to; Stress, Anxiety and Panic Disorders, Depressivon, and ADHD. The combination of challenging both the brain and body is even better than just aerobic

activity alone because the technicality of those sports activates brain areas that “control balance, timing, sequencing, evaluating consequences, switching, error correction, fine motor adjustment, inhibition, and, of course, intense focus and concentration.”
