Celebrating Snowdrop Week at Easton Walled Gardens LINCOLNSHIRE HOMES - VALENTINE’S DAY - RECIPES - MOTORING

This Month’s Cover: Thornton Abbey Gatehouse, Ulceby, is one of the most impressive monastic gatehouses in the UK, built in the 1370s and 1380s. It’s open to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays 10am-4pm until March 29th.

It’s not the only development that’s happening around the county, either. Lincoln’s Lindongate will see downtown Lincoln regenerated, with a 2016/2017 date for the £100m development mooted. The Brayford Pool area will also be redeveloped, allowing the University of Lincoln to accommodate an extra 4,500 students. Meanwhile, a compulsory purchase order of land in Sleaford will kick-start the regeneration of the market town. There are also plans for 42,800 new homes in Lincoln, Sleaford and Gainsborough, £700m of investment in infrastructure and the creation of 25,000 new jobs over the next 25 years. In 2015 alone, The Greater Lincolnshire Enterprise Partnership will bring nearly £50m investment, 2,000 new jobs and 2,000 new homes to the city. We hope that over the course of the year, we’ll be able to bring you lots of good news about the county’s future. Back to this edition, and we visit Lincoln’s Heritage Skills Centre, we’ve Valentine’s Day dining and we admire Lady Ursula Cholmeley’s snowdrops at Easton Walled Gardens.

County News Boston Bites Back: anniversary of flood marked across the town town reflects on disaster as 720 properties in the town were flooded, and the cost of cleaning up after tidal surge is estimated at £8,000,000 Boston residents marked the first anniversary of its tidal surge flooding recently, with events held across the town. Over 700 properties were flooded, 44 people had to be rescued, there were three casualties when, in total, over £8,000,000 of damage was caused as the Haven burst its banks. One year on, Wormgate Bites Back was held to allow businesses in the historic street, which was worst hit, to celebrate their resilience in getting their businesses back up and running in such a short space of time.

mars meteorite man’s find in cosmic Cleethorpes is geologically glorious Cleethorpes man Andrew Currie has discovered a meteorite in the Wolds which he believes dates back millions of years and came from Mars. The geologist was walking in Lincolnshire’s area of outstanding beauty two years ago when he discovered a series of interesting rocks. Having examined them and sought advice from fellow geologist Tom Wade, the pair have now determined that, as they contain the minerals olivine and kemacite, they probably originate from Mars.

a cycle ride to remember for Lincolnshire’s Bomber Command international Bomber Command memorial fund boosted by £10,000 following 365 mile cycle ride

Speaking of resilience, Bateman’s Brewery released its own special edition beer, Resilience Ale, sold in pubs like the Britannia, whose cellars were flooded. Meanwhile, at St Botolph’s Church, where flood repairs are still underway, guided tours showing the damage were given. “There are always ‘diamonds in the debris’ - and this saying was true of the positive consequences of the flood. The ‘diamonds’ in our debris was a pulling together of the Wormgate traders and our church community in a new sense of unity and camaraderie.” said Rev Canon Alyson Buxton.

Raf Coningsby engineers from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight have boosted the funds of the International Bomber Command centre and memorial - due to open on Canwick Hill in summer by £10,479 following a 365 mile, four day cycle ride. Leader of the ride Matthew Marriott said; “Spending time working with the flight has made us aware of the history of Bomber Command and the sacrifices that those 55,573 men made when they gave their lives for our freedom.” “Our ride was long and hard but it didn’t compare what those serving in the Command during WW2 went through on a daily basis.”

Lincoln student wins adobe’s coveted ‘Creative Jam’ award software firm which produces Photoshop hosts national competition with students responding to brief; Lincoln’s tom Watkins ‘amazed’ to win... Lincoln design student Tom Watkins has won a coveted national design award organised by software firm Adobe. The talented designer from the University of Lincoln, has been highlighted as one of the most exciting young creatives in the country after winning the competition. Tom, a second year undergraduate studying Creative Advertising at Lincoln’s School of Architecture & Design, was named winner of the Creative Jam at the Adobe Education Summit 2014. As part of the event, Adobe invited 10 students from across the UK to respond to a design

brief using Adobe’s Creative Cloud software. The event gave the designers two and a half hours to respond to the brief on ‘Your Creative Muse.’ Tom designed a print inspired by his muse; risk takers and forward thinkers, personified by Felix Baumgartner’s space jump. The best two designs in the competition were chosen by a panel of expert judges, before an audience vote awarded Tom the Creative Jam title. Tom said: “It was amazing to win the Adobe Creative Jam. I won a Microsoft Surface Pro 3, which is a great prize, but the most satisfying feeling was having people approach me afterwards.”

The Red Lion

Roars Bicker’s ye Olde Red Lion, is one of the best venues in the area, with stunning rustic food, a warm welcome and lots going on throughout the year. it’s a quality pub restaurant which will have you roaring with delight... There are pub restaurants, and then, there are pub restaurants. Bicker’s Ye Olde Red Lion is the latter. It serves Lincolnshire tapas, it bakes its own bread, it hosts shoot dinners and community quiz nights, it hosts wine-themed dining evenings. In short, it’s imaginative; it’s got character; it’s got soul... and at its heart, it’s got great food. If you’ve yet to dine at The Red Lion, we implore you to book in. Likewise, if you’ve dined at the pub restaurant before, we implore you to find out what’s new this month. The Red Lion mostly dates back to the C16th, with the exception of a few elements of its architecture which are at least 300 years older. The place had fallen into a sorry state until being resurrected by a local farming family back in 2012.

Words: Rob Davis.

When the pub was first constructed, the shoreline of the Wash came right up to the village of Bicker, and the pub was actually frequented by smugglers and sailors. 15

la carte, specials or the tapas menu during both daytime and evening service. Lunchtime dining costs a reasonable £9.95, £12.95 and £15.95 for one, two or three courses respectively. Ladies who Lunch can enjoy a free glass of wine on Thursdays from 12-2pm with the pub restaurant’s loyalty card scheme. Lunchtime à la carte dining sees a choice of four starters, six main courses and five homemade puddings, as well as a selection of home made ice creams and sorbets. The evening à la carte comprises seven choices of ‘Lions Manes,’ plus four grill options and six side dishes.

Below: As part of its Lincolnshire tapas offering, this is the pub’s smoked haddock fishcake.

Thankfully, today it has a rather nicer clientele, perhaps with the exception of a ravenous Editor who popped in just before Christmas when the brigade of four were flat out preparing for a very busy festive season. One of the pub’s many little intimate dining chambers is named the Smugglers Den. It serves as a private dining room for around 10, with the main restaurant broken up into further little areas nicknamed The Snug, The Kipling Room and The Lion’s Lair. There’s a total of 35 covers in the bar area, whilst a further restaurant to the rear of the pub, The Hobble Barn, offers a further 60, and can be reserved for functions. It’s a lovely looking pub restaurant, painted in heritage colours with nobbly beams, flagstone floors, exposed brickwork and fresh flowers on stripped pine tables. Dining takes place between noon and 2.00pm, from Thursday to Friday & noon till 3.00pm on Saturday, with a choice of à 16

Menus constantly evolve rather than changing completely periodically, and each dish has been produced in conjunction with a wealth of local suppliers, from Bycrofts butchers, Sutterton’s Jonathan Hull, Peterborough Game, the restaurant’s Grimsby based fish supplier, and even more local is Bicker’s Diane Tyrie-Smith who provides The Red Lion with its pickles and preserves. Our starters were The Red Lion’s beetroot salmon gravlax, served with horseradish cream and beetroot crisps. Like many of the pub restaurant’s other dishes it’s served on a wooden board. A trio of main courses to sample and photograph included an offering from the specials menu, an 8oz haunch of venison steak served pink on a potato rösti with a blackberry jus, and a salmon fillet with baby roast potatoes and ragu. We also sampled a smoked haddock mini fishcake offering which is one of the 11 Lincolnshire Tapas options that can be mixed and matched for a bespoke dining

“With loads of character, excellent food and a warm welcome, everything about The Red Lion is so right. It’s everything a good pub restaurant should be...” match these to create sort of customised dining option, according to your tastes and appetite, and is both practical and fun. For pudding, we opted for a gloriously creamy cheesecake, and a mountain of absolutely delicious Cointreau profiteroles, dripping with a delicious, rich chocolate sauce. The dining experience at Bicker’s Red Lion is wonderful. We can definitely recommend the tapas option, but à la carte dining is a pleasure too, thanks to big flavours and lots of effort - bread and ice creams are all made by the team in house, for example.

experience as a light snack, starter, or a meal in its own right. Ordering four of the tapas choices on a Wednesday night earns you a free glass of wine, whilst those ordering eight of them receive a bottle of wine on the house instead. Tapas options include bruschetta with warm roasted garlic, Lincolnshire ‘pigs in blankets,’ a Lincolnshire themed mini-Ploughmans, Lincolnshire fish cake & chips & our own Red Lion Kebabs, a half pint of shell-on prawns and marinated olives. The tapas option is extremely versatile; you’re bound to find a number of items of the list which appeals, and the ability to mix-and18

This winter, you’ll enjoy a comfortable, intimate and rustic dining environment, great food, whilst in the summer, a new garden house, patio furniture and lots of cushions and blankets enable diners to enjoy dining, or an aperitif outdoors. Meanwhile, this month, you can also enjoy a dedicated Valentine’s menu with dishes due to be confirmed as Pride goes to press. With loads of character, excellent food and a warm welcome, everything about The Red Lion is so right. If you’ve ever doubted whether a high quality pub restaurant can rival the best fine dining restaurant in terms of satisfaction and stylish presentation of meals, you should definitely make your way to the place at your earliest convenience. It’s everything that a truly great pub restaurant should be, and much more besides.

Dining at The Old Palace there are few things better than really satisfying dining - though quality dining in a beautiful setting does improve good food even further. there are few restaurants in Lincolnshire with a more handsome setting than Lincoln’s Old Palace, whose new chef is looking to boost the restaurant’s profile in 2015... a thousand years in the making, Lincoln’s Old Palace is one of the prettiest places to dine in the county, located in uphill Lincoln with excellent views over the city from one aspect, and unprecedented views of the Cathedral from the opposite one. There are fewer than 50 Grade I listed buildings in Lincoln, of which The Old Palace is one. Originally the diocese’s administrative offices, there have been buildings on the site for over 1,000 years, but the majority of the current buildings date back to 1720 with additions from 1885.

Words: Rob Davis.

Rather more recently, The Old Palace has been used to house the offices of the Bishops of Lincoln and Grimsby, with 16 bedrooms converted into accommodation for ordinations and other diocesan events. In 2009 though, it became a boutique hotel in its own right, extended in 2012 with 16 further rooms. It’s now a 32 bedroom hotel with a dining room, three banqueting suites and a restaurant offering dining and afternoon teas seven days a week. 23

Left: Chocolate terrine; a trio of Belgian chocolate with fruit compote. Opposite: Rabbit with Sicilian ragout, prune spinach armagnac saddle, marinated rack and celeriac cream.

“The building looks fantastic, we’ve a good team, and we’ve a really talented head chef.” says Ben. “This year we’ll be looking to really make our mark on Lincoln’s dining scene...”

“Our afternoon teas have proven enormously popular.” says Ben. “Since I started here the number that we’ve been serving has increased ten fold. They’re usually served in the drawing room, with its comfortable furnishings, green & purple colour scheme and its views over the city. It’s become a really popular place for ladies to meet.” A lounge menu from noon to 9pm for both residents and non-residents includes burgers, sandwiches, salads, a Lincolnshire themed ploughmans, and roast beef ciabatta.

Below: Mille Feuille with balsamic roasted vegetables, rainbow chard and curried pumpkin purée.

Even more recently, just three months ago in fact, The Old Palace gained a general manager, Ben Orton, and a new chef, Albanian Kleo Tabaku, who arrives at the restaurant following a short spell at Lincoln’s Old Bakery. “The building looks fantastic, we’ve a good team, and we’ve a really talented head chef.” says Ben. “This year we’ll be looking to make our mark on Lincoln’s dining scene and extend our provision of food.” “We hosted 35 weddings last year, and we think we’ll have over 50 this year, but we don’t want to be known for banqueting food; we want to provide fine dining quality food but with much better value and a comfortable, relaxed environment.” Dining at The Old Palace takes place seven days a week with afternoon tea served from noon to 6pm. Home made cakes and pastries supplement a case of Mighty Leaf teas, with around nine to choose from, or seven flavours of Ely Gin. 24

An à la carte menu comes into effect from 7pm-9pm Tuesday to Thursday, then from 6.30pm to 9.30pm Friday and Saturday, with six starters, main courses and desserts each. A separate Sunday lunch menu from noon to 2pm follows a 5/4/4 format and is available for £15.95 or £19.95 for two or three courses respectively. “Kleo has also been asked to produce bespoke menus for diners too.” says Ben. “He’s really adaptable and uses ingredients really innovatively. We’re well-placed to take advantage of the great ingredients available across the city, and want to make each dish as Lincolnshire as possible in terms of its provenance.” Local suppliers at the restaurant across all menus include Fosters Butchers on Monks Road, Lincoln veg supplier Fresh from the Fields, Grimsby’s M&J Seafood and Boston’s Pilgrims. Menus change seasonally, and during our visit, starter options included scallops with beetroot cured salmon and wasabi petit pois purée, or pig cheeks, braised in fennel and served with a spiced port jus. A butternut squash is a warming option, whilst foie gras with a brioche crumb is indulgent.

- Food -

“The Old Palace will be Lincoln’s most desirable place to dine in 2015, so our recommendation is to visit as soon as you’re able to do so...” The Old Palace is certainly one of the nicest looking restaurants in Lincoln, owing to its position, and in fairness, we saw it at its worst due to the time of year. In spring and summer with blue skies and a pretty garden to the rear, overlooking the bishops’ vineyard, it’s even more beautiful. In terms of main courses, each menu features a beef dish, a pork dish, a fish based dish and vegetarian option. The latter, during our visit, was a delicate mille feuille dish, proof that vegetarians are never shortchanged in terms of creative, flavoursome dishes. A couple of game dishes - partridge and rabbit - added an element of seasonality to our visit, and in all cases, dishes are immaculately presented with generous proportions and well-considered garnishes. A choice of desserts presented a dilemma, with an apple and amaretto brûlée featuring a home made apple and salted caramel ice cream, and a pistachio cake, each being served with an unseasonally zesty and delicious mango semifreddo. 26

A very high quality of food, however, means that there’s more to the venue than just an attractive exterior. Comfortable, with excellent service and a dining experience that offers fine dining for gastropub money, it’s little surprise that The Old Palace is becoming more and more popular. Chasing AA rosettes and a mention in the Michelin guide this year, Ben, Kleo and the team have their work cut out, but there’s nothing to fault in either the concept, the flavour or the presentation of their dishes. The Old Palace will be Lincoln’s most desirable place to dine in 2015, so our recommendation is to visit as soon as you’re able to do so. To admire the building is human, but to dine there, is divine.

Pep up Your

Pancakes Forgive the pun but this month we’ve a flipping fabulous way to pep up your pancakes, add some bounce to your spring lamb and batter some flavour into your Yorkshire puddings. artisan vinegar maker ann gedney and husband mark have given the spirit world a delicious new product: their three lovely flavoured vinegars are far too good for your chips! That’s the spirit... If you’re looking to pep up your pancakes on 17th February, Lincolnshire couple Ann and Mark Gedney have a terrific way to add flavour to them, in the form of their three artisan vinegars. These days, vinegar is a utilitarian spirit that’s more commonly used in a sour malt form to drench your chips. We’ve forgotten its usefulness as a cleaning product too, with chemical cleaners, despite the fact that it’s still a wonder on windows. Even its properties as an antiseptic have fallen by the wayside. Creating flavoured vinegars is one of those old country crafts which used to be commonplace, but has since been lost to the convenience of consumerism. Vinegar is, in short, the Cinderella spirit fairly drab in its commonest form, but it can be ‘dressed up’ to provide a pretty incredible salad dressing, piquant dessert accompaniment, a flavouring for stews, a base for chutney... the list goes on. The newest champions of the product, Ann and Mark, created their artisan flavoured vinegar company two years ago, naming the new venture Fred & Bex after their two children who left home to pursue studies and a career respectively. 30

Mark is a third generation arable farmer producing brassica and other veg on his land. Ann, meanwhile, has kept herself busy with bookkeeping, a design degree and the responsibilities that come with being a wife and mum. So, when Fred and Bex both left home, Ann wondered what she could do to keep herself busy.

“Creating flavoured vinegars is one of those country crafts which has since been lost to consumerism...” “I love cooking. I’d cook all day, every day if I could.” she says. “We looked at producing a few different artisan foods and drinks sloe gin, for example. We wanted to find something for which there was a demand, something that had been largely forgotten and a product where quality was lacking.” The couple were visiting a food fair in Norfolk and came across flavoured fruit vinegars, which the couple both remembered from their childhood. They

duly purchased a bottle only to be disappointed with the product when they arrived home. The reason, perhaps, is that it was produced with essence, rather than real fruit. The couple decided they could do better and started brewing a prototype of their own. “We created three flavours. A sweet, fruity raspberry one for desserts, puddings and dressings, plus a blackberry one which adds flavour to duck or venison, and can be used in gravy or casseroles. We also added a blueberry one, which is ideal for marinades and salad dressings... I’ve even used it to make cake icing!” The couple’s blackberry based vinegar even won the Guild of Fine Food’s Great Taste Award - one of just 400 products out of the 10,000 considered for the awards. Ann and Mark’s flavoured vinegars are created with foraged fruit, fruit from family & friends and from commercially grown UK fruit. Berries are washed and dried before being steeped in the couple’s white wine vinegar for a number of days - the exact amount of time remains a trade secret sternly guarded by Mark - before being filtered through a colander, then through a muslin cloth. Sugar is added and the mixture is boiled before it’s bottled.

The couple sell the products through farm shops, delis and butchers across Lincolnshire from places like Abbey Parks, Doddington Hall, Four Seasons, Johnsons Garden Centre and Boston Sausage, as well as selling directly to the public from their own website. Proving how versatile her sweet raspberry vinegar is, Ann flipped a few Scotch pancakes on the Aga and served them up with a blob of ice cream, then prepared some Yorkshire puddings with caramelised apple and blackberries. Both were good enough in isolation, but the addition of the raspberry vinegar rendered them even more delicious - great ‘ten minute desserts’ you can enjoy midweek, or to make use of leftover Yorkies following a Sunday roast. The couple’s blackberry vinegar, with the addition of some caramelised onions, is a convenient way to create chutneys and relishes, whilst its Great Taste award winning sweet blackberry vinegar works very well indeed with a cheeseboard and some artisan sourdough bread. “The most important feature of the products, to us, is that they are as useful as possible.” says Ann. “We wanted them to be as versatile as possible, and when we created our website, we were keen to have a number of recipes courtesy of the site’s food writer, Sally.” “Even we’ve been impressed with the number of uses she’s found for the products, from a Blueberry Booster smoothie, to recipes for lemon drizzle cake, spicy chicken drumsticks, risottos, pulled pork dishes, spring salads and a really delicious blueberry glazed gammon. We genuinely think that if you keep a bottle of any of our vinegars in the larder, you’ll find yourself reaching for them all the time.” “We’ve been established for just over two years now, and we’re delighted with the feedback we’ve received. We think they’re delicious products, and we can sell many more bottles than we can make, but it’s the authenticity and quality which matters to us most. We’re happy to be artisan producers of a really good cottage industry product.” Fred & Bex flavoured vinegars are available at quality food outlets or online at www.fredandbex.com, with Sweet Raspberry, Sweet Blueberry and award-winning Sweet Blackberry varieties. The Farmhouse of

The Future For Lincoln’s mark Harris, the reimagining of a property they purchased back in 2008 was an opportunity to create the farmhouse of the future - with the character, charm and rural warmth of a country home, but with modern, convenient design touches and a sense of luxury... Living in the country undoubtedly provides a better standard of living. Sometimes though, it’s nice to have a bit of modern convenience. When Lincoln businessman Mark Harris wanted to redesign his property, in the village of Scothern, he sought to recreate the charm and comfort of an old country property - a farmhouse or a barn, for example - but with comfortable, thoroughly modern touches.

“Being busy people, Mark wanted a home that needed little maintenance, and had lots of light and space...”

“I love Scothern, and the surrounding area.” says Mark, whose company supplies commercial vehicles to businesses across the UK and is based nearby.

what we’ve tried to create with our home, too - a place that has the character of an older country property, but with modern specification and lots of luxuries.”

“We wanted to stay in the village because it’s friendly, welcoming and has some great views. At the same time though, we love the fact that we’re only four miles from uphill Lincoln and can, as such, enjoy the convenience of having such a great city close by.” “It’s a compromise between living in the city and living in the country, and that’s exactly

The Oaks has just been put onto the market with estate agency Humberts of Lincoln. Priced at less than £700,000 it is, as Mark points out, practically a brand new house, having been completed as recently as 2013. Arranged over two floors, it’s been designed by Mark, formalised by local architects. As a busy businessman, he wanted a home that was ultra low-maintenance, with lots of light and space. The house provides that by way of a four bedrooms with two en-suites, and four reception rooms. 45

The kitchen of the property is superbly appointed with a bespoke kitchen designed and installed by Grimsby’s Richard Sutton Interiors, in light grey with quartz work surfaces, with Miele appliances and no fewer than three ovens including a steam oven, plus a microwave and dishwasher, boiling water tap and separate utility room. The kitchen, drawing room and sitting rooms both incorporate large bi-fold doors to take advantage of the house’s large black slate terrace, and the drawing room has a huge expanse of glass thanks to Mark’s preferred timber-framed construction method. This floods the property with light, ensuring it’s efficient to run and retains heat well. The dining room leads to the drawing room, a large entrance hall with contemporary wood burner, and a large bespoke oak staircase.

“The drawing room’s expanse of glass floods the property with light, and ensures it’s efficient to run and heat...” There’s a spacious TV lounge too, as well as a formal sitting room with library. Everywhere, examples of craftsmanship are evident, such as the gorgeous vaulted ceilings of rooms of the kitchen and master bedroom suite. There are some quirky touches too, like the Andrew Martin trompe l’oeil wallpapers which mimic wood panelling and the arched stone doors to the downstairs cloakroom. All of these quirky features prevent the house from being too modern and characterless. Upstairs, it’s a similar story, with a master bedroom suite that has its own log burner, dressing room and a large en suite with Laufen fittings, also provided by Richard Sutton, including grey slate feature wall, his ‘n’ hers basins and wet room shower.

As part of the reimagining of the property, Mark has also landscaped the ground to be easy to maintain with slate terraces and modern planting schemes. The house’s lovely warm feeling belies how efficient, well-thought out and practical it is, whilst the technology that Mark has incorporated has been employed with consideration so that it serves a real purpose and makes for more comfortable living. “It’s a really easy house to manage day to day, but one that’s also great for entertaining. It’s a place I’ve enjoyed massively which it’s why it’s been a tough decision to put it on the market.” “The truth is though, I’ve become quite used to creating a place and now that it’s all done, I’m really keen to start all over again.”

Above: Mark purchased the property in 2008 and spent five years reinventing the property, to create a contemporary country home.

48

“I love the process of designing the exterior and the interior, I love seeing it all come together. It’s almost as though it’s the journey, rather than the destination, that I’ve enjoyed.” “I’m starting a new project and can’t wait to take the knowledge that we’ve learned from The Oaks and see another house gradually come together. The other thing I’ve experienced as I’ve worked on The Oaks is the pleasure of using local craftspeople who really invest their time and care in the property.” “I can honestly say that all the people I’ve had working on the property have contributed to creating the quality feel of the property. I’m really looking forward to using them again.” With the new project beckoning, a lucky new custodian of The Oaks will enjoy a convenient location, a pretty property but also really convenient living, thanks to all of Mark’s hard work.

Permitted Development Rights: Greater Flexibility For Change Of Use On Commercial Property Permitted Development has long provided the ability for occupiers of commercial property to make certain changes of use without planning permission but the regime has been widened to provide further useful flexibility. In early 2013 the Government introduced Permitted Development rights allowing change of use from offices to residential. This has seen significant take up in larger cities but less so in the provinces. This regime is planned to expire in May 2016 but may be extended. More recent changes allow for premises used as shops or for financial and professional services to be changed to residential, creating a new use class known as Class IA. There are limitations on the new rights, principally: - An upper size threshold of 150 sq m. - The conversion must be to a single dwelling house or a maximum of 4 flats, but not a house of multiple occupation. - The rights do not apply in certain circumstances including listed buildings, conservation areas, national parks or world heritage sites. - The rights do not apply to a development where an environmental impact assessment is required. There are also some other more obscure new rights including: - New Class CA – allows a change of use from shop to bank, building society or credit union. - New Class K – has been expanded to allow buildings in certain uses to become a nursery. - New Class MA – allows agricultural buildings to become state schools or nurseries. - New Class MB – allows agricultural buildings to become residential. In most circumstances prior approval is required from the local planning authority before a change can be implemented and the applicant is required to submit details of the plans to the Authority in advance. If you would like to discuss and of the above changes please contact Lewis Cove, Associate at Hodgson Elkington on 01522 698888 or by emailing lewis.cove@hodelk.co.uk. as spring prepares to return some colour back into our gardens, our skies and our homes, it may seem a little odd to advocate the introduction of stark, plain white into your home. But white is not just stark. It’s not boring. It’s not flat. White can bring a sense of comfort with warm whites softening areas and bright whites sharpening workspaces like kitchens. Your White Bedroom Creating warm white bedrooms and the use of cream next to flat whites warms up what would otherwise be a stark look. One opportunity white does present is the ability to mix textures, and use more extravagant, tactile fabrics like linens, or throws in faux fur or chunky knits. When using white in your bedrooms, introduce a statement-making headboard, dress your bed with throw-pillows and break up the monolithic spread of white;

Your White Kitchen White quartz or engineered stone surfaces always look clean, whilst gloss white cabinetry works well with white or timber work surfaces. Wood finishes appear much richer against whites, whilst neutral colours make printed fabrics ‘pop.’ If you’re introducing dramatic elements like chandeliers, ceiling roses and cornices, elaborate shapes and sculptural elements work well against more neutrally coloured backdrops. For a really dramatic look in your kitchen, white and black works well, and allows you to create either a traditional looking kitchen or one that’s more contemporary with

elements like gloss cabinetry or granite work surfaces and bold kitchen elements like stainless steel or black appliances. Your White Living room Again, white living rooms needn’t mean a monolithic expanse of stark white. Using white furnishings against other neutral colours, works well; employing different neutrals and mix a plain white sofa or chair with different textures or patterns on loose cushions. We can’t highlight strongly enough the importance of using a dedicated interior design studio which can combine fabrics from different collections or fabric houses, and can create not just bespoke window treatments and soft furnishings, but also bespoke chairs and sofas, too. Such suppliers can also recommend ways to achieve a scheme which employs white and neutrals shades whilst introducing the necessary depth of tone and texture to turn a plain white, scheme into an inspiring room with real light, calmness and warmth.

The Lost

“It was totally abandoned. There was a path going through the middle of the garden to get to the south park. It was all brambles and rusty gates...” married and moved to the Cholmeley’s family home nearby, back in 1993. Ursula’s own family home had a more modest garden which she enjoyed tending, but she was fascinated by what remained of the 12 acres of grounds which used to surround Easton Hall, and despite having two very young children, embarked on an ambitious restoration project which has yielded ever-increasing benefits for the gardens, and its 16,000 annual visitors. “It was totally abandoned. There was a path going through the middle of the garden to allow access to the south park. It was all brambles and rusty gates.” Even all that remains of the property today is the former laundry, stables and the gatehouse. The property’s former site can still be traced with a degree of accuracy though, thanks to a wealth of old photos, including those from Country Life. fate intervened for the survival of Easton Walled Gardens back in 2001, ably assisted by romance... which, with Valentine’s Day approaching, is especially apt. The village of Easton nestles on an escarpment just a few miles from Grantham, mentioned in the Domesday book, with a replacement of its Tudor Hall created in 1805. It was a grand and beautiful property with grounds that were commensurate to a property which bore more than a passing resemblance to nearby Stoke Rochford Hall.

Main: Easton Walled Gardens this month hosts its Snowdrop Week from 14th-22nd February, 11am-4pm. When most gardens look bleak, Easton will look at its most impressive, with a profusion of snowdrops, aconites and crocus. Above: The vegetable garden adjacent to the site of the Hall.

“We’re very lucky that we have such an unusual layout.” says Ursula. “The original Tudor enclosure over the river survived, but during the 1800s, when the hall was being refurbished, Capability Brown-inspired planting schemes tended to move gardens closer to the halls and move kitchen gardens away from properties. Easton escaped that trend with a kitchen garden that was part of an ornamental arrangement, it harks back to an earlier time, in the style of a French potagére.”

The hall was not to survive a stint as a wartime des res for the 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment of Arnham fame. Easton suffered considerable damage and was finally demolished in 1951, its grounds then suffering subsequent neglect, except for the occasional intervention of a farmer’s flail mower, when time allowed.

Above all, Easton is famed for its snowdrops, with accidental galanthophile, Ursula inheriting two naturally occurring varieties - galanthus nivalis and pleniflorus Flore Pleno. She planted, in addition, more than 13 varieties from the green-leaf woronowii, the yellow Lady Elphinstone and the much larger Fred’s Giant variety which, despite its nomenclature, does not refer to Fred Cholmeley.

Fortunately, all that changed as Sir Hugh John Frederick and Ursula fell in love,

The proliferation of so many snowdrops has given Easton its unique selling point, but was, 73

“Currently Ursula and the team are improving the four acres of wild flower meadows...” in fact, serendipity. Rabbits hate the taste of snowdrops, and despite the number of the creatures running wild around the gardens, left Easton’s drifts alone whilst munching everything else in sight. Still, their culinary loss is our visual gain, and this month Easton Walled Gardens will hold its annual Snowdrop Week from 14th-22nd February from 11am-4pm, which will not only see the garden in its spring glory, with a variety of snowdrops, aconites and hellebores, but plantswoman Jackie Murray giving free talks, plus a display of the heritage of the gardens in the history room. Easton’s bridge was the subject of the first part of Ursula’s restoration. Ably assisted with friends and family, she literally pulled all of the broken fragments of the bridge from the Witham - which cuts across the gardens - and pieced them together like a giant jigsaw puzzle to reveal how it looked. “We had lots of help from family and friends. It was like that in the earlier part of the restoration. Also, we needed heavy equipment to chop down and uproot trees before we could re-seed the area.”

Main: The bridge was the first element of the 12 acre gardens to be restored. Ursula was in the river, pulling out each block of stone to piece together the bridge. Below/Right: Aconites are just one of the treats at Easton month.

The adjacent terraces were mowed and re-seeded, bringing back to life the grand stone steps flanked by wildflower terraces which lead down towards the bridge, past the long borders and through the yew tunnel, with the rose meadows and orchards on either side.

2008 saw the creation of the vegetable garden and the pickery, 2010 saw the establishment of the orchards. Most recently the team, which now comprises three full time gardeners, have created the White Space gardens, inspired by Charles Jencks ostensibly it’s a white coloured garden but with a few contemporary twists to incorporate a theme of nature and the universe.

Ursula concedes that the restoration of the garden will take another 20 years, but claims her greatest pleasure is hearing visitors say they’ve visited Easton before and have returned to see what further progress has been made on the garden’s development.

Currently Ursula and the team are improving the four acres of wild flower meadows, gently encouraging the inclusion of unusual species such as sulphur clover - the furthest northerly occurrence of the species - plus the creation of alpines beds adjacent to the

The Cholmeley Family at Easton

There has been a property on the site of the current gardens since 1592 when Sir Henry Cholmeley purchased the manor of Easton from Gilbert Bury. The property was altered and enlarged in 1805 by Sir Montague Cholmeley, first baronet. Much of the property was replaced by Victorian additions, and in the early C20th, the property was let to various families before being requisitioned as a second world war home to The 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment made famous at Arnham. The family name was established as Sir Henry Cholmeley succeeded to Manor of Burton-le-Coggles in 1590 and subsequently purchased the Manor of Easton in 1592. There have been 13 additional generations including Fred’s father Sir Montague John Cholmeley ‘Monty,’ who married Juliet Auriol ‘Sal,’ in 1960. Fred and Ursula married in 1993 and have two children, Montague, 17, and Isabella, 15. 75

pickery and potting shed, with its views over a turf maze, created in the shape of a wheat sheaf - the family’s crest. Ursula and the team are also completing the winter sowing of 100 varieties of sweet pea. If Easton is famous for its spring snowdrops, it’s nearly as well-regarded for its varieties of sweet peas. July’s Sweet Pea Week event, along the same lines as Snowdrop Week, will see lots of varieties offered for sale. Other highlights of this year include the willow weaving courses which take place in May with instruction on how to create everything from rudimentary sculptures to elaborate willow animals. Another highlight of Easton in the summer is the availability of its Meadow Retreat, a beach hut which families can hire for £25 a day in which they can relax, share a picnic and enjoy views over the gardens. Children, during the summer, can always enjoy a game croquet, play on the swing or with the balls that are provided by Ursula, who hopes the gardens will appeal to all ages. From an initial romantic walk with her new husband, through the rusty gates of the forgotten gardens, Ursula discovered a project that will take a lifetime and beyond to realise. She remains, however, sufficiently pragmatic to admit that right from the outset of the restoration of the gardens, they would rely on tourism and the site had to be able to ‘wash its face.’ “I can’t imagine what possessed me to think we could restore it.” says Ursula. “About five years into the project some of the larger walls collapsed in a pretty major way. So, I think if we’d had five more years of neglect, we’d have been too late.”

“About five years into the project some of the walls collapsed. If we’d had five years more of neglect we’d have been too late,” says Ursula... Fortunately, Ursula and the family intervened just in time. What the team probably didn’t expect, though, was the venue becoming one of the most renowned gardens in the area at this time of year, with lots to see and enjoy at a time when other gardens look comparatively bleak. This month, if you’re seeking a walk in the crisp winter air, or you’re feeling the effects of cabin fever following a long stint indoors over the holidays, we highly recommend a visit to appreciate that a garden can be beautiful not just in high summer, but all year round, too.

Easton Walled Gardens is based near Grantham, just two minutes off the A1; NG33 5AP. The site is open from 14th-22nd February, 11am-4pm, then from March 1st until October. Admission £6.95/adults, £2.95/children. Tel: 01476 530063. Web: www.easton walledgardens.co.uk.

A very busy time in the

Natural World...

From cold weather to coltsfoot, the coming of spring is something to look forward to. this month, Richard Owens tells us how to look after birds in our gardens, how to begin learning different bird species’ calls and which wild flower to look out for in February too...

although traditionally February can be one of the coldest months of the year, it can also be surprisingly busy in the natural world. As the days start to get longer and you venture out into the garden at daybreak, you may notice that the morning birdsong is starting to become slightly more audible, both in volume and variation. If you’re not sure which species are singing you could learn their calls by purchasing a bird song CD, or in this modern era you could possibly even download an ‘app’ for your smart phone!

“On the ground keep an eye out for the year’s first snowdrops, a sure sign that Winter is almost behind us!”

However, never be tempted to play any bird song outdoors as this could potentially be misleading to any local bird life and potentially harmful to the natural balance. Even at this early stage in the year, male birds will be starting to mark out their territory in preparation for mating and the nesting season ahead, indeed if you have not yet cleaned out your bird boxes, you’re possibly too late. 78

Blue Tits and Great Tits will more than likely already be investigating the boxes and will possibly begin lining them out with moss later in the month. If you do not have any bird boxes, there is still time to either buy or make some to put up. It’s worth bearing in mind that the Tit species are highly territorial, so a small garden may only have space for one. If Sparrows are a common visitor, then consider putting up multiple nest boxes, as they will happily nest communally. If cold weather persists, natural food for the birds may be in short supply so it’s important to keep the feeders filled. It will also be beneficial at this time to scatter some bird food on the floor for the ground feeding species such as Blackbirds and Starlings. However, it would be best to avoid this if cats are a regular visitor to the garden, for obvious reasons! On the ground keep an eye out for the year’s first Snowdrops, a sure sign that Winter is almost behind us.

Look for them in particular along hedgerows and woodland edges as well as in the garden. Another key plant species to look out for in February is one of my personal favourites called Coltsfoot. It’s quite an easy one to find and identify, particularly on waste ground or in damp areas around the waters edge. Coltsfoot is quite an interesting perennial as it is one of the few plants to actually have flowers before leaves. The flower is superficially similar to the Dandelion with a stem that I always describe to people as looking similar to Asparagus. Once seeded the leaves start to develop and are equally as impressive growing to the size of cabbage leaves! Foliar emergence of Bluebells should also be visible this month. Personally, I love this time of year so I shall be wrapping up, getting out and enjoying the great outdoors.

Richard has spent his career promoting bio diversity within the world of turf and is currently the UK's Golf Course Conservation Greenkeeper of the Year.

Coltsfoot: Tussilago farfara, commonly known as coltsfoot, is a perennial herbaceous plant common at this time of year.

Investing for the Future

On The Farm this month farming correspondent Barry Poston reflects on our farmers’ ability to invest in new machinery, new buildings and more land when finances are favourable. it’s a time of hope as farmers across the county concentrate on finalising their cropping and livestock plans for the year ahead... during february most local farmers will be fairly quiet on the farm with field work and will be concentrating on finalising their cropping and livestock plans for the coming year. Some farmers in the area held back sowing their winter wheat crops, hoping to get an extra kill of blackgrass with Diquat just before this slightly later drilling. Unfortunately excess rainfall came in mid-Autumn and made sowing of the wheat crop impossible in the sticky and heavy conditions.

It only takes a small surplus of these products to put prices into downfall and buyers are soon keen to take advantage of this situation. Fortunately there are years when prices are good and careful selection of investment in new buildings, new machinery and possible more acres can be made to help cover the poorer years expenses. The recent anniversary of the tidal surge when the bank burst in Friskney and flooded several hundred acres besides flooding many houses in Boston has brought back so very many memories. Confirmation of a £92 million barrage to protect Boston has taken place. Recently I attended a meeting where all the frontage farmers on the sea bank of the Wash expressed great concern on the future flooding of their land. With the high percentage of vegetable and arable crops being grown in this Fenland area, not to mention food packhouses, and the urgency of sea bank heightening has been expressed to the

“When prices are good, investment in new buildings, machinery and greater acreages can all be made...”

These farmers are now left with considerable quantities of seed corn but are hoping for a suitable period of dry weather in February which is the latest time for sowing. They will be keen to get their crop in, as present and future prices are looking more attractive now than previously in the autumn. There has been considerable fluctuation in prices of fresh vegetables, potatoes and pigs and all have been well known for their volatility over many years. 80

Government, to all Members of Parliament, county and local councillors. On a recent visit to Holland I was most impressed with their enormously successful sea defences. Perhaps it might be a good idea to invite some of the Dutch engineers over and get their views and create plans for the Wash area. Once again newer winter wheat varieties have been tested and have reported valuable increased yields over present day varieties. The HGCA who carry out these annual trials are to be congratulated for their efforts and especially the seed breeders who are regularly finding newer varieties showing useful yield increases every year. Seed breeders, in general, are giving a good service to British Agriculture in most products; cereals, rape, sugar beet and peas especially come to mind.

Barry Poston is the area’s foremost farming expert with a long history working in both arable and livestock environments. During his career he has seen a great many changes in the industry!

Lincolnshire firm back in the saddle for high quality equestrian goods... t&C robinsons of Billinghay refocuses on its equestrian specialism... what must be one of Lincolnshire’s oldest family firms is all set to undertake some exciting changes in the New Year. T&C Robinson of Billinghay was established in 1905 by Tom Robinson. Tom created a saddlery business on the current site and went in to partnership with his son Charles on his return from fighting in the War, hence the name T&C Robinson. Fast forward 109 years and the business has gone full circle. After seeing several changes over the last century the saddlery side of the company is now in the capable hands of John Robinson (Tom’s Grandson) and more recently John’s son Peter. Peter is undergoing his apprenticeship to follow in his Father’s footsteps and as such T&C Robinson will be moving forward by focusing on the saddle fitting aspect of the business. This will be undertaken out of one of the units at the current site and will see the closure of the existing shop. “Current situations have forced us to look at our business and reposition ourselves in the market accordingly. Whilst we won’t be able to offer country clothing or leathergoods we will be able to offer a high class saddle fitting service and high quality saddlery to sit alongside our range of saddles,” says Peter. “This

“This is a very exciting time for us, as we get back to our roots and do what we do best...!” is a very exciting time for us as we get back in touch with our roots and are able to do what we do best. Dad is one of the best Master Saddlers in the country so I couldn’t be learning the ropes from anyone better.” The company’s second site also sees the integration of the fourth generation of the family. Anne Brown (John’s sister) runs the Stamford branch that sells country clothing, leathergoods and gifts and is a long standing retailer of the town. Anne’s daughter Becca is already heavily involved in the day to day running of the shop which has recently rebranded to Robinson’s of Stamford.

Both Mother and Daughter are helping to ensure the current repositioning at Billinghay is a success. Alongside a full range of saddles, there will also be a selection of quality, English made saddlery, including bridles, stirrup leathers, reins and dog accessories. The existing repair service will still be available as well as a bespoke leather service for anything from vintage car accessories to individual specific requirements. With Peter on board the area covered by the saddle fitting service should be considerably bigger, so start spreading the word! John concludes by saying, “We would like to thank all the customers who have visited our shop over the years and hope to see those that ride, out and about on saddle fits in the future as T&C Robinson begins the next chapter.” T&C Robinson will be having a sale on the stock left in the shop so head to Tattershall Road, Billinghay, Lincs, LN4 4BN or call them on 01526 860436 for details!

Estate

of the Art

audi’s firebreathing Rs6 is the car that can’t decide if it’s a motorway cruiser, a cosseting executive model, a capacious load-lugger or a 911-demolishing sports car. it’s all things to all drivers... as long as you can live with the aggressive styling... Words: Rob Davis. a menacing motor to put fear into any driver who sees it in their rear view mirror. The sheer styling of Audi’s RS6 makes it obvious to those who spot it approaching from behind that the driver means business. Sporty Audi’s have become more aggressive of late, and the RS6 is no exception. Based on Audi’s civilised and much more understated A6, Audi’s RS6 has been around since 2002, launching a year after the release of the third generation A6. The latest version is the RS6’s most potent incarnation, available in both four door saloon and now an estate - badged Avant - derivative. RS6 may be extremely fast, but it’s also practical and easy to live with on a day to day basis. Consider, for a second, the Porsche 911, a very well-respected sports car. In Carerra S form, the 911 will reach 60mph in 4.3 seconds. It has two seats, and will set you back £86,000. An RS6 Avant, meanwhile, is a full five seater. It has a huge boot, more standard equipment (Porsche will charge you extra for electric seats, seat heating, cruise control, and front parking sensors!), yet it still outpaces the 911 by reaching 60mph in 3.9 seconds. It’s also cheaper than the Porsche at £77,995. The 911 is renowned for being a great driver’s car, but the Audi can counter with its excellent Quattro 4x4 system, mated to a dual clutch eight speed automatic gearbox that makes accessing its performance a cinch. All this means the RS6 Avant is an estate when you need an estate car, an executive saloon when you need to cruise along an A-road, a five seater family car for taking the kids to rugby at the weekend and, on the day when you’ve left the family behind, a storming car that can shame even the most well-regarded of sports cars.

Firebreathing: The 4.0V8 engine in Audi’s new RS6 is smaller than the engines of previous RS6s. The new car has cylinder shutdown technology so it effectively halves the size of its engine unless its 552bhp is called upon. An eight speed dual clutch auto gearbox makes harnessing its performance a cinch.

Right: The RS6 Avant is based on conventional A6 estates with 565 litres of space with rear seats in place, and 1680 litres when they’re folded. Our car’s optional 21” gloss black wheels cost £2,000. Standard equipment is very generous, with heated electric leather seats, sat nav and eight speed auto gearbox all standard.

The RS6 looks the part externally, with twin oval tailpipes, 20” alloys wheels and a body kit. Inside there’s carbon fibre style inlays and a flat-bottomed perforated steering wheel. Also standard are heated, electrically adjustable leather seats, sat nav, BOSE stereo, DAB radio, auto lights and wipers, parking sensors all round, four zone climate control and a Drive Select system which allows you to set up the car’s air suspension, gearbox and throttle responses for sport or comfort. It’s incredibly well-equipped, but that’s not to say the options list for the RS6 is slim. Specifying one of the 15 coloured leathers, six wood inlays or the gloss black alloy wheels shown in our photos will all cost extra, £2,000 in the case of the latter. 86

A Dynamic pack comprising unlimited top speed, ceramic brakes and LED headlights costs £10,000, whilst adaptive cruise, TV and night vision are all optional too.

providing effortless performance there’s something about the RS6 which isolates the driver from the true danger of such performance.

The car’s standard equipment should be enough for any driver, and if not, you’ll probably be too pre-occupied by the car’s blistering performance to notice. It handles with scalpel precision, it has ferocious acceleration and the RS6’s roadholding is nothing short of impeccable.

The RS6 is epic. Deceptively so. It may look like a family estate car, with some fancy wheels added and a full on body kit, but even so, no spoiler or front splitter can accurately express just how much performance the 4.0V8 car with its 552bhp and 700 Nm of torque possesses.

“It handles with scalpel precision, it has ferocious acceleration and the RS6’s roadholding is nothing short of impeccable...”

On the other hand, there’s no burble from the V8 at idle; with cylinder shutdown technology as standard, the car operates as a four cylinder car until it’s put under pressure. What’s more, with the dual clutch gearbox

Whether you want a premium estate, an executive car, a 911-destroying sports car or a family shuttle, the RS6 has the capacity to be all of the above. What’s more, for a car of its size and spec, it’s also thumping good value.

A Family

Wedding a flurry of excited wedding planning resulted in a relaxed and fun family wedding for Jennifer ackroyd and James goodrich. Here, the couple share the secrets of their wedding planning... Images: Samantha Hook Photography, 01636 673800, www.samanthahook.co.uk

for grantham couple James Goodrich and Jennifer Ackroyd, an easter egg hunt led to a surprise proposal, and a superb family wedding held near their home.

“My sister Nicola married in 2013, so apart from setting a date, and booking our venue, we didn’t start wedding planning until around a year beforehand.”

“We were introduced by my brother in law.” says Jennifer. “We met on a night out and have been together about seven years. I’d dropped the odd hint, but the proposal still came as quite a surprise!”

The couple booked Victorian mansion Stoke Rochford Hall, where they had attended a wedding previously. “I knew the place and loved it. It looks incredible when it’s all set up for a wedding!” Jennifer says.

James had asked Jennifer’s father, Ken, for his daughter’s hand in marriage at Christmas. The poor chap had to keep quiet until easter, though, when an easter egg hunt led to a giant Thorntons chocolate egg, with a ring inside and then a proposal down on one knee. Jennifer was stunned, but of course, said yes straight away.

The next element of the wedding Jennifer wanted to organise was her dress. “We went to Belle and Bouquet at Wellingore Hall with an open mind as to what dress I’d choose. Mum and my sister picked out a Mori Lee dress love with it straight away, it was ivory, decorated with Swarovski crystals.”

“I knew Stoke Rochford Hall as I’d been to weddings there before. It looked lovely, and we were able to marry in the church in the grounds...” Images: Samantha Hook Photography.

The couple married in the church in Stoke Rochford village and used a royal blue colour scheme. Sophie Cullumbine provided the flowers, making use of white and blue hydrangeas which Jennifers says were “As big as our heads!” as well as yellow freesias an in-joke for Leeds United fan Ken. Speaking of sport, James is a keen member of Kesteven RFC, so rugby-themed table names and a table plan were created by Frances Roxburgh of Dreams to Reality. Next door to Frances in Anwick, KMG Bridal Studio provided the groomsmen’s suits. “Taking our vows felt amazing, and the whole day had a really relaxed, friendly feel.” says Jennifer. “All of the guests were looking forward to it, and were counting down, to it.”

“We’ve come away with some wonderful memories and wonderful photographs courtesy of Sam Hook. She was brilliant!” The couple enjoyed a wedding breakfast in Stoke Rochford Hall, and a wedding cake created by Sue Seymour of Sue’s Cakes, before an evening reception at the Hall, and a honeymoon to Dubai and Mauritius. “The day went brilliantly, but if there’s any advice I can give to brides, it’s to not leave the little things until last minute. Also, brides shouldn’t be afraid to chase suppliers up. “You think ‘it’s OK, they know what they’re doing,’ and that’s true. But, if it provides you with peace of mind, double checking that everything’s going to plan is never a bad thing!” says Jennifer.

Modern

provides limitless possibilities Restoring mouths and replacing missing teeth have been the basis of modern dentistry for many years but since the introduction of dental implants, patients have been able to enjoy restorations that feel, function and look like natural teeth.

are also more tolerated by the body. With proper care and good oral hygiene, a replacement teeth solution such as a denture or a bridge will last for many years. A dental implant can actually last a lifetime.

Today’s methods of replacing missing teeth provide a range of possibilities enabling a more tailored approach to your treatment that better reflects your needs, lifestyle and budget.

The stable, implant-supported tooth replacements offer strength, reliability and durability similar to that of natural teeth. Crowns, bridges or dentures are securely anchored to dental implants. This eliminates some of the main problems of conventional dentures: poor fit, gum irritation, pressure points, speech and taste impairment. The result is an aesthetically comfortable, reliable and stress-free solution.

The latest denture solutions are very durable. They are more stable, more comfortable, and more functional than conventional dentures. And because dental implants are made of biocompatible materials, they

Achieve a Great Looking

Healthy Smile gainsborough’s forum can help you to achieve the perfect smile in 2015, with virtually pain-free dentistry and a free consultation for their implants. dr Richard anderson explains how the practice can help anyone improve their teeth, their health and their confidence... don’t put up with an imperfect smile. Gainsborough’s Forum Dental Practice can provide the solution for missing or damage teeth, straighten crooked smiles and help you to achieve a whiter smile with a range of tooth whitening treatments. One of the firm’s most popular treatments, however, is its dental implants, and the arrival of new implantology dentist Dr Richard Anderson means achieving the perfect smile is easy and virtually pain-free... it’s also cheaper than ever, with generous discounts on treatments and free teeth whitening. We all hope that we can go through life avoiding problems at the dentist. Brushing twice a day, and maintaining a balanced diet goes a long way to achieving this. However, people lose teeth for a variety of reasons including gum disease, infection or accidents. This is why dental implants are becoming increasingly popular.

Dental implants provide much greater retention and security than others types of denture and improve the ability to eat and speak as well as ensuring a great looking healthy smile. Implants are hailed as the next best thing to natural healthy teeth, but this all depends on where you get them fitted. “Cheap options are always tempting but with something as important as your oral health The Forum highly recommends that implant choice is based on quality rather than price.”

of post-treatment issues, with no aftercare provided. At The Forum we commonly see patients with problems with their implants from either low cost treatment or from placements abroad which we help the patients to resolve. In the UK you also have the guarantee of regulation of the CQC ensuring patient care is of the highest standard.” The Forum’s implants are all placed by Dr Richard Anderson who is very experienced in not only the placement of implants but also the restorative work afterwards. This means even at the stage of placing the implant, he has ensured that the final result will meet the patient’s expectations.

“Implants are hailed as the next best thing to natural, healthy teeth but this all depends on where you have them fitted...”

“Dental implants are the modern way of replacing one or more missing or severely damaged teeth. The implant itself is a titanium substitute for a natural tooth root, and once a crown/cap is placed on top it looks identical to a natural tooth.” says Richard. “Another popular use for dental implants is denture stabilisation. 100

“At The Forum we only use the highest quality materials and labs. This ensures that there is less chance of failure and increases patient confidence and satisfaction. Many surgeries utilise cheap imported implants which allow them to offer low cost treatment.” “Patients are also looking to travel abroad for cheaper implants. These cost savings are wiped out when you consider the problems of cheap materials increasing the likelihood

“We use the market leaders for all of our implant materials. This ensures that all of our implants placed are reliable, secure and aesthetically perfect. The Forum will conduct an extensive initial consultation to determine whether you would be suitable for dental implants and give you control of your treatment options.” To find out more, and receive a FREE consultation call The Forum on 01427 615117 if you would like to take up this opportunity. The Forum Dental Practice is located on Vanessa Drive, Gainsborough DN21 2UQ. Or, see www.theforumpractice.com.

A straighter, brighter smile with Invisalign... gainsborough’s Forum Dental Practice offers a wealth of dental treatments from regular check-ups and whitening to dental implants, crowns, veneers and bridges. One of the practice’s most popular cosmetic procedures is its Invisalign invisible braces. These are suitable for patients of all ages and can correct spacing, crowding, or crooked teeth without frequent trips to your dentist. Non-invasive, removable, with no effects on speech, and no wires or metal on display, it’s the ideal way to achieve a natural, healthy smile, usually in 9-18 months. Dr Keith Jackson has specialised in delivering the Invisalign system for a number of years. “More than one million people last year had orthodontic treatment, including more adults than ever before. The route to a natural, healthy and confident smile has never been simpler for everyone. Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age and you can achieve a smile makeover without the traditional metal braces that many people still think of.” This month Keith and The Forum will be offering £250 off a course of Invisalign treatments, plus free teeth whitening worth a further £350. 101

Don’t let the little things hold you back...

More Ways to achieve

Better Health Boston West independent hospital provides quality healthcare with both nHs and self-funding pathways. this month, we speak to Heather Emmerson to find out why there’s no need for those niggling medical issues to continue to trouble you in 2015... imagine a 2015 when you’re no longer troubled by chronic medical conditions. Acute care in the NHS is unsurpassed across the world, but with some NHS care pathways for minor chronic conditions taking 18 weeks, many patients are taking advantage of medical insurance-based and self-funding private care in the UK’s best private facilities, like the 35 facilities run by Ramsay Health Care. Now in its ninth year, Boston West Hospital is a day case treatment centre with all three patient pathways, five treatment rooms and a state-of-the-art theatre, enabling patients to access consultant-led care within a number of medical disciplines.

The hospital is ideal for treatment of chronic minor conditions such as varicose veins, cataracts, bunions, or pain management. These are conditions which are on the 18 week NHS pathway, but self-pay patients at Boston West Hospital can be seen within two weeks. These are also conditions which, being very much in demand, place more pressure on an over-burdened NHS, meaning facilities like Boston West work symbiotically with other hospitals to reduce overall waiting times.

“It’s a friendly, happy hospital, delivering quality healthcare just the way I’d want that care delivered to me...”

“We can provide treatment for all sorts of orthopaedic, ophthalmic, gynaecological and exploratory (diagnostic) procedures... in fact, most procedures which require discharge the same day.”

“Allied to other Ramsay facilities we can also provide pre-operative or outpatient consultations for operations that require overnight stays in hospitals like our sister hospital, Peterborough’s Fitzwilliam.” “In all cases, patients benefit from consultant led care and treatment in a small, friendly, clean and modern hospital.” 102

It’s a system that works well, as NHS patients can opt to ‘choose and book’ where they will be treated, under the patient choice initiative.

Meanwhile, medical insurance and selffunding patients benefit from even shorter waiting times and surprisingly competitive tariffs. Orthopaedic surgeon and consultant at Boston West Hospital, John Watson says; “Units like Boston West provide extra capacity in the independent market, which is also consultant delivered.”

“Coming here, your care is being delivered by well-trained surgeons. Continuity of care can also be provided and that’s important to patients too, with named consultants rather than teams. It’s a friendly, happy hospital, delivering quality healthcare just the way I’d want that care delivered to me.”

Main: Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr John Watson and the team prepare for a minor procedure at Boston West Hospital.

Do you have a Will? Look after those you love this Valentine’s Day...

are you planning to get married or settle down together? maybe you have chosen the ring, but have you thought about making sure that your loved ones are taken care of if something unforeseen happens? a professionally drawn Will is the answer for that peace of mind.

in a will you can: • Appoint people you trust to deal with the paperwork after you have gone • Decide who inherits your assets - not always easy if you already have children from a previous relationship and you don't want them to miss out if you remarry • Appoint guardians to look after your children, avoiding potential arguments in the future • Create trusts to provide for your family, particularly if you have a child with special needs • Minimise tax liabilities • Preserve your assets for the next generation • Deal with business succession

always remember: • If you don't make a Will the law decides who gets what and that might not be what you want • If you are not planning to get married but just to live together, your partner won't automatically inherit anything from you unless you have a Will in place • If you have already made a Will and get married later, your marriage may invalidate your Will. If you think this might apply to you, it always pays to check It doesn't take long to make a Will and it is time and money well spent to protect those you love For further information please contact Caroline Cunnington on 01775 725664 or a member of our Wills, Trusts and Probate department by visiting our website

trust us to take care of it

Securing the Future with

Skills From

The Past

Lincoln’s heritage skills Centre is securing the future, with skills from the past. it provides people in Lincolnshire with the opportunity to enjoy - or make a living from - the preservation of our historic buildings... take a short course at the centre and discover the skills for yourself! Words: Rob Davis it’s been a year since Kathryn Banfield took over as the manager of Lincolnshire’s unique Heritage Skills Centre. The unusual building is located within the grounds of the Castle, which is itself receiving a makeover in advance of its £22m April relaunch, where it will more fully show off the county’s Magna Carta. An archaeologist by profession, with seven years experience working in heritage skills, she came to the county with the intention of helping people to learn about, preserve, and make a living from historic buildings, but also brought along the determination to see the centre used to the fullest of its potential. It was as far back as 2005 that the idea for a centre was conceived by Lincolnshire’s Mary Powell, who’s responsible for many of the significant development projects across the county, and a genius when it comes to making funding applications to turn those hopes into reality. The idea was the creation of a multi-use centre which could serve a role in education for schools and colleges, host short courses for the public and train heritage professionals to keep the skills needed to maintain our buildings within the county. Its location also means it can work alongside the Cathedral’s Works Department - the team of stone masons, stained glass window specialists, conservation joiners, and other specialists who work hard to maintain the fabric of Lincoln’s most precious building. 122

Skills: The Heritage Skills Centre is a resource that will keep skills like stone masonry, stained glass window creation and heritage joinery in the county, as well as providing short courses in heritage skills for members of the public to enjoy.

The £3m centre opened in March 2013, and whilst a handful of heritage skills taster courses for the public have been run already, Kathryn is determined that 2015 will see many more members of the public through the doors to make use of the facilities and tutors which are available. “There are only around five centres like ours in the whole of the UK.” says Kathryn. “And whilst we’re seeking to provide the means to protect the skills that will ensure the preservation of country’s 5,500,000 traditionally constructed buildings, we also want people to come here for pleasure and enjoy learning new skills.” The centre will be offering 2015 taster days for blacksmithing, wood turning, tapestry weaving, silversmithing, leaded stained glass, pottery, stone carving, and willow weaving. Prices are from £30 to £100, depending on the skill and materials needed, with courses running on both weekdays and weekends. On each of the courses, participants will be able to take home whatever object they make, and with the number of participants on each course limited to anywhere from four to 12, you’re assured of plenty of time and attention from the experts teaching at each event. “We’re also hosting conservation courses for the public throughout the year.” says Kathryn. “These are aimed at people with traditionally constructed homes - or one of around 500,000 listed properties in the UK. They cover topics like the appropriate care and cleaning of historic objects, how to pack and store family heirlooms, or an introduction to ceramics repair and conservation.” Aiming to combine learning and fun, we were invited to try a few of the skills that Kathryn’s team will be offering this year, beginning with tuition in leaded stained glass, cutting each piece according to a template, and assembling each piece before adding the lead ‘came’ and soldering the piece together. The exercise took place in one of two rooms the centre has, intended for ‘dry’ or tidy skills like silversmithing, stained glass work and textile courses, before venturing next

Right: A few of the courses on offer include silversmithing and stained glass window craft... Editor Rob Davis won’t be giving up his day job!

door into the centre’s more rugged room which hosts its stonemasonry, lime render and joinery courses. It was in this room that we tried our hand at masonry, first cutting a chamfer into some Lincolnshire limestone sourced from the Cathedral’s Lincoln quarry, before trying letter carving, all under the expert guidance of Kathryn. A third room in the Heritage Skills centre will be used to host exhibitions and other events, but for now, it houses the ongoing conservation of Doddington Hall’s 400 year old tapestries, currently being repaired by a team of specialist conservators.

Top: Courses include working with clay, stone, glass, textiles and more. Above: Editor Rob Davis creating a chamfer, and trying his hand at letter carving. Opposite: Doddington Hall’s 400 year old tapestries are now being restored at the centre.

We had a great time at the centre, and if you’ve always wanted to try your hand at a traditional skill, whether for pure pleasure, with a view to beginning a new hobby or with a view to looking after your own heirlooms, you’ll have great fun, just as we did. Kathryn says the centre will host at least 46 of her heritage skills taster courses in 2015, teaching over 300 people. That’s in addition to courses for contractors, professional staff and for schools and colleges, with funding already in place for pupils aged 16-19 to have a go at the skills themselves. This month, the centre is hosting a tapestry weaving taster course on 7th February,

“We want people to come here and have fun.” says Kathryn. “The centre should be used by everyone, after all...” silversmithing course on 14th February, a felt making course on 21st February and an introduction to leaded stained glass on 27th and 28th February. March will see illuminated manuscript courses, blacksmithing, pyrography, traditional embroidery and drop spindle spinning, as well as lime plastering and copper foiled stained glass courses. “We want people to come here and have fun.” says Kathryn. “The centre should be used by everyone, after all. But the centre serves an important role too - preserving the skills we need to protect our historic buildings and making sure such buildings are still around for future generations to enjoy for centuries to come.” For more information on any of Kathryn’s courses and for booking details call 01522 541173.
