welcome letter

The start of a new month and the start of a new magazine for Pride Magazines. First of all, we launched our brand new sister magazine Stamford Pride which was greatly received by our Stamford readers. Next month, we’re launching the fourth magazine to our group, Peterborough Pride. In this edition of Lincolnshire Pride, we speak to the Lord Lieutenant, Mr Toby Dennis, who tells us what the monarchic role involves and what it’s like to welcome royals to Lincolnshire.

Our cover story this month is one of the highlight events of the year; the Blankney Hunt Ball. We attended the ball and have your photos in

this edition. If you attended the ‘YOLO’ ball in Ancaster, your photos are in this edition too.

Further south, we’re dining out at the Supreme Inns in Bicker, a partner restaurant to Lincolnshire Pride Restaurant of the Year winner the Red Lion, and it’s well worth the visit. Our best wishes for a wonderful month,

Tilly Wilkinson,

Editor

Two Brand New Pride Magazines

PRIDE MAGAZINES LAUNCHES PETERBOROUGH PRIDE AND STAMFORD PRIDE PRIDE It’s an exciting month for the Pride Magazines team as we launch not just one, but two new magazines! Last month we launched Stamford Pride, the third magazine in our collection of county magazines, following our launch of our Lincolnshire and Rutland editions in 2002 and 2012 respectively. “There has always been some confusion about why, historically, we’ve included Stamford in our Rutland, rather than our Lincolnshire edition,” says Executive Editor Rob Davis. “It’s because Stamford is geographically more closely aligned with Rutland.” “However, with the launch of our Stamford title, we’ll be able to give the town its own recognition.” “Next month sees the launch of our fourth magazine, Peterborough Pride. Our hope

is to bring to the city a fresh new magazine which, we’re confident will become the finest, highest quality magazine in the city and the surrounding area.”

GRANTHAM After home brewer Charlie Ruigrok made some beer and rhubarb wine to serve at his wedding, guests enjoyed his handiwork so much, he and wife Gemma turned it into a business. Witham Wines has just moved to new premises at Withambrook Park, Grantham, and has just recently gained approval to sell its wine online.

The elderflowers come from the Belvoir area and wine ‘must’ is imported from overseas. Using the traditional Champagne method, they make their sparkling wine. The couple plan extra flavours too, which Charlie says are ‘really exciting.’ A rose rosé and a sparkling ginger wine are among them. n Visit www.witham-wines.com for more information on the drink.

GEORGE ‘JOHNNY’ JOHNSON OPENS NEW EDUCATION CENTRE NAMED AFTER HIM...

BOSTON The Capital Dairy Company has been delivering milk in glass bottles to customer’s doors since 1993 and the company says after the airing of David Attenborough’s Blue Planet on the television they have seen an increase in customers wanting to be more environmentally friendly. Back in the day, everyone received their milk in a bottle on their doorstep from a milk float but now it has become less common. However, General Manager Bill O’Sullivan thinks that this is a growing trend for those wanting to watch their carbon footprint. "I've been in the business since 1979, and I started out my working life as a milk man.” "I’ve seen the decline in people buying glass bottled milk over plastic cartons. However, this isn’t the case anymore.” “The big change has been because of David Attenborough in Blue Planet. For people across the country seeing plastic floating around in the ocean next to wildlife has been a wakeup call.”

LINCOLN Dambuster George ‘Johnny’ Johnson, the last surviving British member of the Dambusters raid, was absolutely delighted to be asked to open a new children’s education centre named in his honour. The former squadron leader and MBE holder was on hand to declare the facility on Weaver Road in Lincoln open recently. The main aim for the centre is to support children between the ages of 14 and 18 struggling with mainstream education. In the past Johnson, 96, has taught people with learning difficulties and fully supports the centre. n George ‘Johnny’ Johnson pictured left with his medals of honour.

The Blankney Hunt Ball The annual Blankney Hunt Ball was held at the Newark Showground, with an ‘Under the Sea’ theme. Attendees enjoyed a cocktail bar, dance floor, two bars, a delicious three course meal, a

raffle that was held in aid of the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and late night entertainment.

To stick to the theme, organisers had sand and deckchairs outside, seaside songs being played with a welcome drink on arrival and

seaside-themed centrepieces and decorations. It was also well attended this year; over 1,000 went to the ball.

HIGHLIGHTS

A Call from the

MONARCHY

May will be a monarchical month of patriotism celebrating a royal wedding. In the lead up to the big day, three royals have been provided with tours of Lincolnshire led by the Lord Lieutenant Mr Toby Dennis, who will also be attending the ceremony... Are you hoping for an invite to this summer’s most anticipated event? If so, we hope you’ve managed to keep on the good side of Toby Dennis.

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare to marry at Windsor Castle, within the curtilage of the castle will be 1,200 members of the public nominated by the country’s 98 Lord Lieutenants. These will include six young enterprising guests and their partners, from Lincolnshire, personally recommended by Toby himself. OK, so in practice Toby - who lives just north of Sleaford - is as incorruptible as one would expect as The Queen’s representative in the county, so merely finding yourself in his favour won’t be sufficient to secure an invite. And even if you’ve won over Toby, he’s just one of nine regional Lord Lieutenants who are overseeing the process of issuing the 1,200 invites.

“The office is a bit broader minded these days in terms of who it recruits,” says Toby, reflecting on the selection process for the role.

“Occupying the role of High Sheriff does not inevitably lead to the role of Lord Lieutenant.”

“Historically it was a role occupied by a member of the aristocracy, but it was democratised in the post-war era.”

The enduring role is one of two archaic ceremonial positions held by people in the county. The role of High Sheriff historically was one that involved the administration of taxation, and today has become a ceremonial position superceded by the police force and judiciary. The position of High Sheriff is a role appointed annually by the Sovereign via the Privy Council. Conversely, a Lord Lieutenant could occupy their position indefinitely, though recent years have seen the position remain open to those under 75, effectively ensuring a more frequent transition of fresh Lord Lieutenants.

“I served as High Sheriff from 2013-2014,” says Toby. “Occupying that role doesn’t inevitably lead to being a Lord Lieutenant. The appointment is conducted by Richard Tilbrook, the Head of the Honours Secretariat at the Cabinet, who is based in Downing Street.” “Enquiries are conducted very discreetly at least a year in advance of the appointment, with Richard or his colleagues consulting with members of each county’s community,

Right: Lord Lieutenant Toby Dennis with the Prince of Wales. Far/Right: Toby welcoming Princess Royal to the county last year.

for instance, church leaders, senior members of the armed forces, University Chancellors, or those involved in regional charities and sporting clubs.” “The Secretariat seeks to find out what the county needs from a Lord Lieutenant, and around six months later, asks prominent figures in each county to formally put names forward for consideration.”

“Three names in total are put forward by Richard’s Secretariat to the Deputy Prime Minister, which in my case was Nick Clegg. He proposed my name to the Prime Minister, David Cameron, and a letter arrived on my doormat the day after Boxing Day, a sort of belated Christmas gift!” “A nominee must advise Her Majesty The Queen that they will accept the position and my appointment to the role was ratified at the end of January, beginning in February 2015.”

The role of Lord Lieutenant necessitates upholding the principles of the monarchy in the county, which also includes coordinating royal visits, making arrangements on behalf of the intended locations that each member of the family will visit, and creating a shortlist for Lincolnshire residents to be invited to the three annual Royal Garden Parties, to which 30,000 people will be invited. Toby has welcomed The Duke of Cambridge, The Princess Royal, Prince Edward, and the Dukes of Kent and Gloucester into the county during his tenure.

Most recently, he’s welcomed the Prince of Wales into the county, visiting Louth’s Livestock Market, Age UK, Boston’s Freshtime and Tattershall’s Castle & Holy Trinity Church. When Pride goes to press, he’ll welcome Princess Anne once more, as she visits National Coastwatch Institution in Skegness and HM Prison North Sea Camp near Boston.

But the role also involves serving as The Queen’s representative for the county’s armed forces and presenting medals, inspecting troops and attending passing out ceremonies at, for instance, RAF College Cranwell.

Toby is the county’s 25th Lord Lieutenant and hopes to continue in the role for another 12 years, but this year’s RAF100 celebrations mean that he’ll be busier than ever. The role 23

1 - Lincs Pride MAY 190.qxp 03/04/2018 12:02 Page 24

mean that he’ll be busier than ever. The role will have added poignancy when he visits the International Bomber Command Memorial which was conceived by his predecessor Tony Worth, who died in 2017 before he could witness its completion.

Toby also represents the county’s 1,000 Army Cadets and 500 Air Core Cadets. Toby is also a representative to the area’s mayoralty, police forces and fire & rescue services, and acting as Head Magistrate for the judiciary in a ceremonial capacity.

“I’m assisted by 30 deputy Lieutenants across the county, which sounds like quite a number, but for occasions such as Remembrance Day, it ensures that there can be representation at as many events which take place simultaneously. I also attend British Citizenship Ceremonies where possible, which are otherwise attended by my representatives. The role involves around 350 visits a year, plus all of the background preparations, so it’s busy, taking up about three days a week - it also has no form of remuneration.”

In his capacity as Lord Lieutenant, Toby is Patron of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, Patron of the Lincolnshire Rural Support Network, president of the Heckington Agricultural Society, President of the Army Benevolent Fund and President of the English Speaking Union, as well as head of the RNLI Guild and High Steward of Lincoln Cathedral.

“It is a terrific privilege to represent HM The Queen and to serve as an ambassador for the county. I’ve lived here all my life, and I’m so glad to witness the county blossoming.”

“I’m hoping that 2019’s improved rail link will boost Lincolnshire tourism and that we’ll be able to welcome more visitors into the county to see all that we have to offer. Like the role of Lord Lieutenant itself, it’s a chance to show off the county and to be proud of the place in which we live!” n Above: The Princess Royal will visit Skegness and Frieston when Pride goes to press. Royal Visits to Lincolnshire in the Past...

Her Majesty the Queen: The Queen has visited the county several times. She has visited RAF Cranwell and the Burghley Horse Trials in the past. The Queen also opened the University of Lincoln’s Brayford Pool campus in 1996, and one of her most recent visits was with Prince Philip in 2002.

The Duke of Edinburgh: Prince Philip announced last year that he would not be joining the Queen on royal engagements, so the last time he visited Lincolnshire was in 2002 in Scunthorpe. He also visited Scunthorpe again in 1957 unaccompanied and Brigg with Her Majesty the Queen in 1977.

Earl and Countess of Wessex: Sophie, the Countess of Wessex visited the Lincolnshire Show in 2013. The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, and Prince Charles’ and the Princess Royal’s brother, opened the new state-of-the-art £18m facilities at RAF Cranwell in 2015.

Duke of Gloucester: Last year, the Duke of Gloucester visited Bishop Grosseteste University to open the brand new £2.2m extension. Prince Richard officially opened the Constance Stewart Hall in July 2017. He has visited on several occasions in the past too.

Prince Harry: Prince Harry is yet to visit Lincolnshire, but his fiancé Meghan Markle, is a yellowbelly! Well, sort of. Research compiled by historians has revealed that her paternal great-great-great grandmother Mary Hussey Smith is a direct descendant of a Lincolnshire nobleman.

The Duchess of Cornwall: Prince Charles’s wife Camilla has visited Lincolnshire too. She visited Lincoln Cathedral as part of a day long Lincolnshire tour with the Prince of Wales in November 2011. They also visited Riseholme College and she visited the local Women’s Institute unaccompanied.

A Boston girl born and bred, I come across two main responses to where I’m from; anyone outside of Lincolnshire remarks that I don’t seem to have an American twang to my accent, and anyone from Lincolnshire seems to screw their noses up. It frustrates me people feel this way, and that Boston seems to suffer from such a bad rap in the media. I’m proud of where I’m from, and Boston is such a great town with so much to offer its residents, not to mention its proud history (it is the original Boston that founded its American counterpart).

The list of notable Bostonians is extensive and the town’s architecture is visible for miles around. The ‘Stump’ or St Botolph’s Church as it’s more formally known is one of the largest parish church in England.

In what is still a matter of debate, there are a number of believed origins of the church’s nickname that at first applied to the tower and is now frequently used to describe the whole church. What is certain is the real roots have long since faded from memory.

The first is that the tower took so long to build it resembled a stump during the construction phase. 70 years was not, however, a particularly long time for a tower of such height to be built.

Words: Tilly Wilkinson.

BOSTON’S LANDMARKS St Botolph’s Church, ‘Stump’ The Stump was completed between 1510 and 1520, and is one of the largest parish churches. Herbert Ingram Statue A statue of the founder of The Illustrated London News, fellow Bostonian Herbert Ingram is located in front of the Stump. He supported the town a great deal. Hussey Tower Once the impressive manorial home of Sir John Hussey, a member of the court of Henry VII. Maud Foster Mill Brothers Thomas and Isaac Reckitt had the Maud Foster Mill built in 1819. Remarkably, the original contracts from the building of the mill still survive.

Main Image: Taken by our editor Rob Davis, our drone shot shows the Boston Stump in the forefront and the Maud Foster Mill and Pilgrim Hospital in the background.

Many similarly tall structures would be built a level at a time over hundreds of years. Secondly, it was intended to be completed with a spire. This seems unlikely as there has not been a single recorded lantern tower in England that has been topped with a spire. It is, however, possible that a spire was originally intended resting on the first phase of the tower. It would have looked rather like St. James Church in Louth. The third explanation is that it is named after the dramatic appearance it creates rising from the flat fenlands that surround it for miles.

Other churches, including Ely Cathedral, also derive nicknames from their appearance when viewed from the fens. The name Boston is said to be a contraction of ‘Saint Botolph’s town.’ Boston grew into a notable town and port in the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1204, King John levied a tax of 6.67% on the moveable goods of merchants in the ports of England.

The merchants of Boston paid a total of £780, the highest in the kingdom after London’s £836. Therefore, it was already significant in trade with the continent of Europe and ranked as a port of the Hanseatic League. 29

Edward III named it a staple port for the wool trade in 1369. Apart from wool, Boston also exported salt, grain and lead.

Henry VIII granted the town its charter in 1545 and Boston had two Members of Parliament from 1552. In 1612 John Cotton became the Vicar of St Botolph’s and became responsible for a large increase in Church attendance. He encouraged those who disliked the lack of religious freedom in England to join the Massachusetts Bay Company, and helped to found the city of Boston, Massachusetts, which he was instrumental in naming. At the same time, work on draining the fens to the west of Boston had begun, a scheme which displeased many whose livelihoods were at risk.

This and the religious friction put Boston into the parliamentarian camp in the Civil War which began in 1642.

The chief backer of the drainage locally, Lord Lindsey, was shot in the first battle and the fens returned to their accustomed dampness until after 1750.

The later 18th century saw a revival when the Fens began to be effectively drained. A sluice was designed to help scour out The Haven. The land proved to be fertile, and Boston began exporting cereals to London. In 1774 the first financial bank was opened.

The railway reached the town in 1848, and it was briefly on the main line from London to the North. Boston remained something of a local railway hub well into the 20th century, moving the produce of the district and the trade of the dock, plus the excursion trade to Skegness and similar places.

Boston once again became a significant port in trade and fishing in 1884, when the new dock with its associated wharves on The Haven were constructed. It continued as a working port, exporting grain, fertiliser, and importing timber.

During the First World War many of the town’s trawlermen, together with those from Grimsby, were taken prisoner after their ships were sunk by German raiders in the North Sea.

Their families did not know what had happened to them until late September 1914. The men were taken to Sennelager camp, then on to Ruhleben POW camp where most remained until being repatriated in 1918. Meanwhile, the port was used by hospital ships and some 4,000 sick or wounded troops passed through Boston. 30

The first cinema opened in 1910, and in 1913 a new Town Bridge was constructed. Central Park was purchased in 1919, and is now one of the focal points of the town.

In the Second World War the borough lost 17 civilian through enemy air raids. There is a memorial in Boston Cemetery that commemorates them in addition to all the men who lost their lives during the war.

The long list of notable Bostonians includes John Taverner, who was a popular English composer/organist in the 16th century, regarded as one of the best and one of the most important English composers of his era. John Leverett, the penultimate governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was the most notable Boston of the 17th century.

In the 18th, British naval surgeon George Bass who explored Australia attended Boston Grammar School and later trained in medicine at the hospital in Boston.

The most notable 19th century Bostonian is Jean Ingelow, a well known poet and novelist.

In the most recent centuries, you may know Alan Moulder, record producer on albums from some of the world’s biggest rock bands. Robert Webb is a comedian born in Boston you may know from ‘Peep Show.’ A DC Comics artist also originates from this small town in Lincolnshire; Brian Bolland. He designed and created comics and his most notable character was Judge Dredd.

“BOSTON IS A TOWN THAT HAS DEFINITELY HAD A BIG IMPACT ON SO MANY DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF OUR WORLD IN SPITE OF ITS SIZE AND REPUTATION...”

Boston is a town that has had a big impact on the world despite its reputation and small estimated population of just under 67,000. Bostonian predecessors have left their mark on the world, and they’ve also turned Boston into a great market town.

From the ancient buildings like Boston’s Guildhall and Blackfriars’ Art Theatre, to modern projects like the new Boston United stadium currently underway, there’s so much Boston has to offer and it’s definitely a town that can surprise people with its offerings and its story.

Above: John Westland Marston was an English dramatist and critic in the 19th century from Boston.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Tower’s Tudor: TRACY BORMAN

Growing up in Lincolnshire and returning to give a lecture at Bishop Grosseteste University this month, author, historian and Chief Curator for Historic Royal Palaces Tracy Borman tells us why growing up in Lincoln inspired her to become a historian... Britain as a whole prides itself on its heritage, but Lincolnshire specifically has a lot to brag about. With 440 Grade I listed buildings, 583 Grade II* listed buildings, Stamford’s Georgian architecture, Tattershall Castle, Belton House and of course the magnificent Lincoln Castle and Cathedral, to name just a few of the county’s superbly preserved historic buildings, it’s understandable how growing up in such a county can influence your life and spark an interest in history.

Words: Tilly Wilkinson.

Tracy is now the Chief Curator for Historic Royal Palaces charity, that manages Hampton Court Palace, Tower of London, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace, Banqueting House, Whitehall and Hillsborough Castle.

Tracy Borman is the Joint Chief Curator for Historic Royal Palaces, appearing on television and radio, and a regular contributor to the magazine BBC History. She’s also an author and will be launching her new book in June.

“I grew up in Scothern and my parents still live there,” says Tracy. “My sister and I would often visit Belton House, Tattershall Castle, Gainsborough Old Hall etc. I loved living there. Lincoln Cathedral is the finest Cathedral in Europe and I could see it everyday.”

“I decided to study - and eventually teach history at the University of Hull and was awarded a PHD in 1997. When I returned home during the summer breaks, I worked as a Victorian jailer at Lincoln Castle! I often volunteered at Grimsthorpe Castle too.”

She’s also Chief Executive of the Heritage Education Trust, a charity that encourages children to visit and learn from historic properties through the Sandford Award scheme. She’s also worked for the Heritage Lottery Fund, The National Archives and English Heritage. Main Image: Tracy Borman outside the Tower of London in full Tudor dress! Her role as Chief Curator involves arranging exhibitions, lectures and tours too.

Tracy is the Joint Chief Curator alongside Lucy Worsley, best known for her presenting 35

presenting and producing work on BBC Television series on historical topics and for her publications, most recently on Jane Austen and Lady Mary.

“Nowadays, half my time is spent curating for Historic Royal Palaces, primarily on my favourite era - the Tudors - and the other half is spent writing.” “Curating is about researching the history of the Palaces we have in our care. I worked my way up by getting any job I could in heritage, and now I have the job of my dreams.” “The job also involves being responsible for everything from arranging exhibitions and refurbishments to lectures and tours.” “But writing has always been my greatest ambition. I wrote my first book in 2007 and I’m on my 10th book now. This year is set to be a very busy year; I’m releasing my very first novel in June and will be returning to Lincoln

“Becoming an author of historical novels has been a lifetime ambition for me, and now, after ten years, I am writing my tenth historical book...” for the Book Festival to meet people and sign copies in September.”

“The book is called the King’s Witch and it is about the Gunpowder Plot, so a different subject to my usual Tudors!” “Writing a novel was a different experience too. I enjoyed it, but I had a lot to learn after just writing non-fiction books. The King’s

The King’s Witch: A Story of Frances Gorges... As she helps to nurse the dying Queen Elizabeth, Frances Gorges longs for the fields and ancient woods of her parents’ Hampshire estate, where she has learned to use the flowers and herbs to become a much-loved healer.

Frances is happy to stay in her beloved countryside when the new King arrives from Scotland, bringing change, fear and suspicion. His court may be shockingly decadent, but James’s religion is Puritan, intolerant of all the old ways; he has already put to death many men for treason and women for witchcraft. So when her ambitious uncle forcibly brings Frances to court, she is trapped in a claustrophobic world of intrigue and betrayal - and a ready target for the twisted scheming of Lord Cecil, the King’s first minister. Surrounded by mortal dangers, Frances finds happiness only with the precocious young Princess Elizabeth, and Tom Wintour, the one courtier she can trust. But is he everything that he seems?

36

Witch is true in parts and it’s about a woman who really did exist in the court of James I, but we don’t know a lot about her.” “I loved the freedom of using my imagination to fill in the gaps, but I still did a great deal of research and adhered to the known facts where possible.” “It was a lot harder than I thought; I had to think of a story that would be compelling to readers.”

“I've written a non-fiction book on the seventeenth century witch hunts. It focused primarily on the Belvoir witches, a trio of witches actually based at Belvoir Castle near Grantham in Lincolnshire.”

Tracy’s long list of titles include several about the Tudors; ‘The Private Lives of the Tudors: Uncovering the Secrets of Britain’s Greatest Dynasty,’ ‘Thomas Cromwell: The Hidden Story of Henry VIII’s Most Faithful Servant,’ and ‘Elizabeth’s Women: The Hidden Story of the Virgin Queen.’ This is Tracy’s bestselling book to date.

Her other books include ‘Henrietta Howard: King’s Mistress, Queen’s Servant,’ ‘Matilda: Queen of the Conqueror,’ ‘Witches: A Tale of Sorcery, Scandal and Seduction,’ and ‘The Story of the Tower of London.’ The King’s Witch will be released in June, and Tracy will be coming to Lincolnshire to talk to people about it and launch it at the book festival in September. 'It's the first of a trilogy and Tracy is already working on the second book, which will be released next year.

Although if you want to meet Tracy this month, she’s going to be giving a talk at the Bishop Grosseteste University on Elizabeth’s Women, The Hidden Story of the Virgin Queen. This talk, based on her book of the same title, will explore the fascinating relationships that Elizabeth I had with the women who influenced her most.

1 - Lincs Pride MAY 190.qxp 03/04/2018 12:02 Page 37

Elizabeth’s Women... Elizabeth’s Women is Tracy’s bestselling book to date. It was published to high acclaim 2009 and was Book of the Week on Radio 4. The book explores all of the most important women in Elizabeth I’s life, from her bewitching mother, Anne Boleyn, to her dangerously obsessive sister, Mary Tudor. It discusses the various rivals she had to her throne such as Mary, Queen of Scots and the sisters of Lady Jane Grey, to the ‘flouting wenches’ like Lettice Knollys who stole her closest male favourite. These were the women who shaped the Virgin Queen and it is through their eyes that the real Elizabeth, stripped of her carefully cultivated image, is revealed. Tickets for this event are £7.50 and are available online. For further details please contact Bishop Grosseteste University Events Office on 01522 585635 or email events@bishopg.ac.uk. All funds raised at this event will go to the BGU Foundation Fund, enhancing the student experience and making a difference to other people’s lives. n For more information on Tracy’s talk, please visit the website www.bishopg.ac.uk. Also, browse other talks and events at the university on the website or call 01522 585635.

From her scandalous mother, Anne Boleyn, to her greatest rival, Mary Queen of Scots, and the ‘flouting wenches’ who served her at court, they show Elizabeth in a surprising new light. The talk will take place at the University on Thursday 31st May at 7.30pm.

“I enjoy giving talks, especially about my favourite time in history, so I’m really looking forward to coming to Lincoln in May. I also studied in Lincoln, and still keep in touch with my A-Level history teacher from Yarborough School - now Lincoln Castle Academy.” When she's not curating at Historic Royal Palaces, writing novels or giving talks, Tracy spends time with her family in London. She

38

“I decided to get married in the Tower of London; since writing a book about Thomas Cromwell, I’ve become a bit obsessed..!” and her husband married in the Tower of London.

“I decided to get married in the Tower of London because it’s one of the palaces I work in. But it was also because, since writing a book about Thomas Cromwell, I’ve become a bit obsessed by him.”

“He is buried in the Tower chapel. It’s a bit ghoulish but for someone who loves history, you can’t get much more historic than that.”

There aren’t many locations in Britain, other than London, that rival Lincolnshire’s prolific heritage, so it comes as no surprise that the Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces originates here.

We look forward to her return to the county with her talk at Bishop Grosseteste University in May and her return in September to launch her new book and first ever novel, The King’s Witch. n For more information on Tracy Borman, her books and to discover where else she is giving tours in the UK, call 020 7471 7900 or visit the website www.tracyborman.co.uk.

NATIONAL MILLS WEEKEND IS THE FESTIVAL OF OUR MILLING HERITAGE WHERE LINCOLNSHIRE MILLS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC LINCOLNSHIRE

SAT 12th - SUN 13th MAY

NATIONAL MILLS WEEKEND

Until the advent of the steam engine, wind and watermills provided the only source of power for many different processes - from making flour, paper, cloth to hammering metal and extracting oils. During National Mills Weekend, you can explore mills that produced, or still produce these products, some restored to working order, some derelict. With chef ’s skills too, and a nice setting, we’re really able to offer diners the best possible experience and the best food.”

Brand New...

Two Birds Rhubarb Gin

Wine of the Month

It all started with a love for great tasting gin, experimenting in the workshop for months, trying to develop the perfect drinking gin.

Tenuta di Castiglioni, Frescobaldi. Tuscany, Italy / £24.95 / 13% / Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernate Franc, Sangiovese

Two Birds Spirits was founded in 2013, in the town of Market Harborough, Leicestershire.

“Our wine of the month comes from Italy this month.”

Now, the finest botanicals have been carefully distilled to complement a superb infusion of English Rhubarb. Drink with a good handful of ice and mixing with a premium tonic or a refreshing ginger ale. Garnish with a stick of Rhubarb. £37.95/70cl, 40%.

The Wine Cellar HARISH’S MONTHLY SUGGESTED TIPPLES INCLUDE FOUR LOVELY AND VERY DIFFERENT WINES, A DESSERT WINE FROM PROVENCE IN FRANCE, AND A POPULAR RHUBARB GIN... THREE OF A KIND: A RED, A WHITE AND A ROSÉ FOR EVERY OCCASION...

1. “Our red this month is the Malvasia Nera, Talò, Salento. The wine is an intense and complex bouquet of ripe red fruits combined with hints of spice. Flavours of blackberry jam and vanilla notes.” £12.95 / Malvasia Nera / 13%. 2. “Our white is a Chardonnay from the Raymond Vineyards in California. Bright aromas of citrus, green apple and tropical fruit are followed by notes of vanilla and honeysuckle. Crisp, with a beautiful minerality, tangy citrus notes and a touch of vanilla.” £19.95 / Chardonnay / 13.5%.

“A wine of brilliant clarity with bright fruit notes of cherry, redcurrant, strawberry and plum, layered with spicy hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, roast cocoa and a hint of hazelnut.” “The palate for this particular wine is warm, with balsamic, spicy notes, cherry and coffee flavours which are supported by a refreshing acidity and dense but elegant tannins. The drink is smooth and dry on the finish.” n

It comes with a splendid amber colour with brick-red tints.” “The nose reveals complex aromas of dried fruits, walnuts, currants, honey and a hint of spice. HOMES & INTERIORS

CHESTNUT

HOUSE

Chestnut House on Tinkle Street in Grimoldby is as sweet as it sounds. This truly unique and imposing home has a contemporary feel yet with twists of character and charm that make it so inviting... Words: Tilly Wilkinson.

Chestnut House, Tinkle Street. The address sounds like something you would hear in a fairytale; the gingerbread house in Hansel & Gretel perhaps. This enchanting address actually belongs to the Grantham family in Grimoldby, Louth. Laura and Andrew Grantham built the home to live in as a family with their two children; Jasmine who’s 10 and Jenson who’s 7. Andrew was born and raised in Grimoldby, growing up at his parent’s home Grimoldby Grange for the best part of his childhood.

He then moved just next door to Chestnut Cottage soon after meeting Laura. Andrew and Laura lived here for several years and brought their two children up here. The two even married in Andrew’s parent’s parkland. “As we were familiar with the area, we thought where better to build our home than in Grimoldby,” says Laura.

“We had outgrown Chestnut Cottage. As Andrew, who works for the family business, specialises in demolition, waste management and commercial and residential properties, we demolished the property and Chestnut Right: The snug leads from the kitchen and features twinkle ceiling lighting.

64

Far Right: The grand entrance to the property opens up onto the sweeping staircase.

Right: The kitchen features a six metre long island and a teppanyaki table.

House was born in 2013. The house took 12 months to build in total. We then moved in and gradually we completed the house throughout the years.

The entrance to Chestnut House takes you through grand wrought iron double gates and down a driveway with courtesy lighting. Having a contemporary feel yet with twists of character and charm, this magnificent property is entered via stone pillared Georgian style portico with double doors opening to a grand reception hall.

The focal imperial oak and decorative iron spindle staircase makes for an impressive opening which certainly sets the scene for the grandeur to follow. The contemporary accommodation is of outstanding proportions,

“The kitchen is definitely our favourite space in the home. The teppanyaki hot plate that is across the breakfast bar is certainly a talking point when hosting dinner parties..!”

but a particular feature has to be the kitchen. As the true heart of this home, the kitchen features a wealth of bespoke fittings include a stunning six metre long granite central island incorporating a glass topped breakfast bar and - a very impressive and unique feature to any kitchen - a teppanyaki hot plate.

“Our favourite part of the house is in the kitchen,” says Laura. “It’s where everyone always congregates together whether it’s a normal weekday, weekend of socialising or even Christmas Day. The teppanyaki hot plate is certainly a talking point for when we host dinner parties too!” Adjoining the kitchen is a sizeable snug, with an inset aquarium and twinkle lighting, providing a homely and relaxing environment.

Double opening archways lead into the orangery, brightly lit by the overhead glass roof lantern and the bi-folding doors, and currently used as the dining room. The further ground floor reception rooms offer

versatile, flexible living space combined with modern elegance.

The sophisticated ambiance continues to the first floor. The distinguished landing offers spectacular views across the grounds, but the highlight of the staircase and landing in Laura’s opinion is its centrepiece. “My special place in the house is the main staircase. Above the stairs, a glass box cabinet features my wedding dress.” “I love the fact that my dress isn’t put away in a cupboard to never be seen again or until Jasmine gets to the age where she wants to try it on.”

“Allowing people to see this unique idea of featuring my wedding dress in the centre of my home, is truly magical to me and I feel ever so lucky and fortunate to have such an amazing place to hang it for all to see.” 66

Upstairs, the master suite includes a dressing room fully equipped for every necessity, flowing through to a further walk in closet currently filled with Laura’s shoe and clothing collection, finishing at the en suite bathroom. The guest bedroom with en suite shower room enables comfortable privacy, and the further two bedrooms have the advantage of an inviting Jack & Jill Bathroom.

Externally, the grounds are landscaped enveloping the slate entertaining areas. Also, there is a detached triple garage featuring a first floor gym. It is also worth noting that Chestnut House comes with the planning permission for an indoor swimming pool. This isn’t just a beautiful home; it’s practical and one to be lived in for years to come.

The New Window Company

The New Window Company’s modern products will still suit the style of your traditional property, but without the rattle and draft associated with usual sash windows. Chairman Roy Wakeman explains more... Home ownership is still very much high on the agenda for most of us when it comes to improving our lifestyles, we spend much of our life living in and caring for our homes. It is normally the biggest single asset anyone of us will ever own, and what’s more over time it can also provides tax efficient capital gains. It’s not surprising then when it comes to spending some of our income it goes into either improving our existing homes or into a move to another home, the latter driven by moving up in size as our families grow or downsizing as families flee the nest. We can also move due to job changes or migration.

Whatever the motivation, high on our list are the fixtures, fittings and other key parts of the house that needs our attention. No so more important than the windows and doors.

The fenestration of any house is all important and history has not only proven this, but the styles of the windows and doors often belong to Elizabethan, Georgian and Edwardian periods for example.

When refurbishment or replacement is required, whatever the style, these areas are so critical to the heritage of our nation that it comes under the jurisdiction of the building control and planning authorities. They can

Words: Roy Wakeman OBE.

literally stop the wrong design of a window or door being fitted to an existing house.

So, it is always best that if you live in a listed house or even in a conservation area you should consult with your local planning office and talk to the building control officer responsible. One of the key issues today and of concern to all involved is the question of double glazing. Should the benefits of double glazing be enjoyed by owners of listed buildings or not.

We say, that given the benefits of double glazing in reduced heating costs, improved sound insulation and when special glasses are specified solar gains made, they should. After all modern designs in whatever material can now be made to replicate the exact style of the original. Available now are certificated and proven methods of slim glazing units with substantial guarantees.

“The New Window Company offer a full installation service for all of their products...”

These can provide added benefits and when seen from a short distance is unrecognisable from single glazing of the period, this is particularly true for sliding sash windows.

Now we can move away from sash windows that rattle and are drafty in windy conditions and replace with New Window Company modern products. We can as a result feel safe and secure and enjoy the warmth of our houses whatever the external conditions.

The New Window Company can supply windows and doors in a variety of materials. We have showrooms at our office and showroom in Frieston Heath, Caythorpe, Grantham where you can touch and feel the full working models right across our range. There’s a full installation service backed by a deposit guarantee insurance scheme and carried out by fully trained direct employees.

As we approach the spring and summer now is the time to inspect all your windows, wash them down and clean out the insects and other debris. If you feel you need to improve or replace your windows and doors now, call to discuss for installation in the autumn ahead of next winter. n For more information call 01400 272538 or visit www.new-window.co.uk.

BLUSHING

BEDROOMS

BLUSH PINK HAS BECOME A HIT IN HOME DÉCOR. HOWEVER, TRYING TO BLEND THIS SUBTLE BUT AMBIGUOUS SHADE INTO YOUR STYLING CAN BE QUITE TRICKY. USE ENOUGH BUT NOT TOO MUCH PINK TO MAKE YOUR HOME WARM... Blush pink has always been a challenging colour to bring into a home due to its very feminine association. However, men are becoming bolder with colours, embracing shades that were formerly considered feminine territory.

What makes blush pink such an appealing hue for a room, is that it turns heads without being as audacious as red. It offers allurement and subtleness.

It’s a very versatile colour too; although decorating an entire room in blush may be a bit much, you can still use it in accents like pillows, rugs, a vase, wall art, or a blanket with a scheme of blush pink textures and intensities.

It’s also versatile in the way it can be paired with most colours. It’s soft enough to be a background colour but bold enough to also be used as a highlight. We recommend pairing blush pink with soft grey tones, cream colours and it also works well with copper or marble accents. Main: A bold bedroom designed by John Lewis with darker hues of pink, floral wallpaper and a burst of yellow and blush pink on grey bedsheets. Above is a bed by JD Williams, more suited to a home in the country. If you want a very modern style, use the colours in this photo to the right.

80

If you don’t feel you’re quite ready to take the pink plunge just yet, bring blush pink flowers into the home. Pink flowers - especially roses or peonies - make a great accent, particularly in a neutral space.

Blush pink flowers can make for a very feminine, sweet arrangement, but they can also

achieve a more modern, sophisticated look when paired with a copper or grey vase. In addition, the specific shade of pink can drastically alter the tone of the arrangement. It makes a space fun and warmer.

That’s why it’s an ideal colour for your bedroom. Bedrooms offer you the luxury of having a large versatile centrepiece, allowing you to change the entire look of a room just by changing the colours of the fabrics and cushion arrangements. Left: Debenhams’s Home features velvety fabrics, grey headboards, mirrored furniture and luxury heavy throws and blankets for your bedroom. Above: Try dark navy with a soft pink. This item is from Furniture Village. Right: Another styling by John Lewis with a pink throw rug and detailed floral cushion.

If you’re feeling really brave, paint a bedroom wall blush pink to make white bedsheets stand out and gold bed frame. It’s just a great colour to make this room in your home look modern without making too many drastic changes. If you want any of the bedroom styles across these pages, we’ve featured collections and bedroom furniture from brands such as John Lewis, JD Williams, Laura Ashley and Debenhams. n 83

Soil, Glorious Soil!

Alison Pratt, Communications Manager for NFU East Midlands, discusses the importance of soil and the study of this underrated farming essential...

It never fails to amaze me how plants grow. To think that a small seed will germinate, grow roots and a shoot and push up through the soil to produce food for us, is a miracle. To grow a crop in a field, when millions of seeds grow side by side and produce tonnes of food, is farming.

As with all life, crops need water, sunlight, oxygen and nutrients and something to grow in. For most food crops that is soil.

Soil is a wonderful thing. A long time ago I spent three years at university studying it and still didn’t even dig below the surface (pun intended) of its wonderfulness. Formed by nature over thousands of years, sometimes longer, this mixture of rock fragments, water, organic matter, micro-organisms, soil ‘fauna,’ roots and gases, is endlessly variable.

Did you know that there was an organisation devoted to the study, classification, naming and understanding of soils called the Soil Survey of England and Wales? It took 60 years of survey work and more than 200 man years to produce a map and description of all our soils. Today Cranfield University continues the study of the 700 or so different soil types in England and Wales and produces digital maps and information for people working in a multitude of industries who need to know

about soils and how they were made, what they’re made of, what pH they are, how well drained they are and lots of other facts. But back to growing crops. Traditionally, fields were ploughed, harrowed, sown and rolled then the crop germinated and grew. Today, the plough and harrow are used much less and new techniques of minimum tillage and no tillage are in fashion. A whole new science

ON THE FARM THIS MONTH

Arable Sector: The first silage is cut in May, orchards are still blossoming and bees are pollinating. You’ll see potatoes and the first strawberries being harvested in fields in May. Livestock Sector: Late lambing will definitely come to a close in May and farmers will be getting cows ready for mating for spring calving in the following year.

of crop production has developed and the results can be quite astounding.

A friend who farms in south Lincolnshire calls it farming worms. For many years he has been practicing ‘no-till’ farming; he has sold all his big machinery and does not have a plough or harrow on the farm. Instead he has developed, with a like-minded farmer, a range of seed drills that carefully place the seed in a slot in the soil. Without disturbing the soil, plant roots, micro-organisms and worms especially have begun to create the most fabulous soil structure.

The word structure implies something that is man-made, but in soil terms and with the use of no-till production, the structure is nature-made. Soil’s natural drainage and fertility are enhanced by leaving things alone. Having said that, turning the soil to allow frost to penetrate in winter performs a different set of jobs: killing slugs, aerating soil and creating a good growing medium for seeds to establish themselves. And it plays a key role for some farmers who have problems with a terrible weed called blackgrass. But that’s another story.

As with any debate there are pros and cons and you’ll find that farmers will debate the merits of ploughing or not, till the cows come home. Or should that be worms? 87

OUTDOORS

Nature

NOTES

Nature will be filling our gardens and local green areas in May as we’re soon to enter summer. Look out for bats and migrating birds from the Sahara...

Mating

NEWTS

The male newt will drop a packet of sperm near a female, which she collects. A week or so later she can lay up to 300 eggs on broadleaved aquatic plants.

May is the time when we see millions of migrant birds flying into the UK largely from south of the Sahara. Expect to see an abundance of cuckoos, swallows, house martins and the very delicate little willow warblers arrive on the Lincolnshire coastline.

The nesting season is well under way for our resident birds. Great tits, blue tits and long-tailed tits are all going to be rearing their young in spring and robins, song thrushes and blackbirds too are fledging and leaving the nest.

In the water, animals are breeding too. Look out in ponds and rivers 88

for sticklebacks. The red-bellied males will surely be tending their nests and collections of vegetation and sticks. Smooth newts will be floating in their spring finery like tiny dragons in your garden pond.

Some animals will be emerging from their hibernation. One of these animals you should look out for is the bat. The smallest bat is called the pipistrelle bat and the largest is named the noctule.

Another fun fact about bats; the creatures in the UK only eat insects and most commonly midges, moths and mosquitoes. Bats can catch

What’s in

SEASON? Here’s a roundup of the British fruit and vegetables that will be available in shops and in season in May... Apples There is evidence that apples grew wild in Britain in the Neolithic period but it was the Romans who first introduced varieties with sweeter and greater taste. The British season finishes in May.

Asparagus A short season from April to June. Radishes Their season starts in April and finishes in October.

them in flight or pick them off the surface of water, in foliage or on the ground.

The very tiny pipistrelle can eat up to 3,000 midges in just one night which equates to one third of its entire body weight! Tides of bluebells flood the floors of woodland areas and make a stunning sight. If you do happen upon a woodland in spring, you should look out for other spring woodland flowers, specifically dog violet, greater stitchwort and yellow archangel. Lady’s smock, more commonly referred to as the cuckoo flower, will be found in marshy areas

around the county. Expect to see orange-tip butterflies surrounding lady’s smock, as this is the insect’s food plant. The hawthorn shield bug or the green shield bug amongst other early invertebrates may show up on foliage at this time of year so keep an eye out for them.

Look for the pale parasitic flowers of toothwort under willows and hazel that usually grow near water. You may see trout, stickleback, roach and chub in May in clear waters. If you do just one thing for nature this month, make a bat box to encourage roosting bats.

Rocket Another short season similar to asparagus - May to June - in the UK.

Spring Onions These are an easy to grow crop that can usually be harvested in a relatively short amount of time. Strawberries These are in season for a long period of time despite its reputation; see British strawberries on shelves from April to November.

Heard it through the GRAPEVINE

We heard it through the grapevine that Hackthorn Hall near Lincoln has a lot to celebrate. 2018 marks the 400th anniversary the hall has been in the Cracroft-Eley family, the 150th birthday of the garden’s enormous grapevine, and it has been 90 years since the garden first opened for the National Gardens Scheme... Words: Tilly Wilkinson. Images: Tilly Wilkinson, Marilyn Shepley and Roger Taylor.

“Chartered landscape architect and journalist Bunny Guinness has redesigned the croquet lawn and rose garden at Hackthorn Hall into a much more formal parterre with box hedging and sunken garden...”

The National Gardens Scheme has been inviting garden owners to open their hidden treasures to the public since 1927. Many of the gardens we visit are in the fourth or fifth year with the scheme, but Hackthorn Hall near Lincoln has been part of the scheme since it first began over 90 years ago. The property has been in the Cracroft-Eley family for 400 years precisely this year, and the current hall was built in the 1790s to replace the former hall which fell into disrepair. It sits on 15 acres of landscaped, productive and formal gardens managed by head gardener Keith Donner.

Keith has been a gardener for over 40 years and has been based at Hackthorn for the past 13. He took over from Donald Moore, who started gardening at Hackthorn in 1949. Before Donald’s time and before World War One, there were nine gardeners at Hackthorn which has now been reduced to two.

“A lot has changed over the past hundred years,” says Keith. “The way we manage the gardens at Hackthorn and reasons why are different. In Donald’s day, the kitchen garden would still be used for food production, the orchard still picked for jams and preserves and there would’ve been three to five gardeners.” “Nowadays, we’re much more efficient thanks to modern changes in gardening and technology. The kitchen garden is no longer needed as food is so readily available, and we have the likes of lawn mowers, tractors and hedge trimmers to help maintain gardens.”

“Since I’ve been here, the styles and garden ‘fashions’ have changed with the times too,” says Keith. “The traditional rose garden has been changed into a sunken garden, and chartered landscape architect, journalist and radio personality Bunny Guinness has redesigned the croquet lawn at Hackthorn Hall into a much more formal parterre with box hedging.” 94

The serpent hedge is part of the designs created for Hackthorn Hall by Bunny Guinness which fit in well with the manmade lake and natural landscape.

“Hackthorn Hall sits at the lowest point of the surrounding landscape, hidden away like treasure, and the natural environment seems to encompass it because of this. The gardens at Hackthorn are very much a mixture of formality and letting nature take its course.” “Close to the Hall, you’ll see formal topiary and lawns, and the further you venture out, you can find horses grazing in fields, the lake and the Lady Walk - a pathway through woodlands filled with snowdrops.”

Hackthorn Hall opens for NGS but also for the local church twice a year. The estate holds various events and has a ‘Wedding Dress’ ball coming up soon. They also host weddings on the estate. On the NGS open day on Sunday 10th June, you’ll be able to see echinacea, salvias, pink roses, anemones, and Annabelle hydrangeas. “We usually get around five to six hundred people visit the garden on our NGS open

day. We provide homemade cakes made by ladies in the village and teas. There are sometimes art exhibitions and cut flower stalls too with flowers from the kitchen garden.”

“This year is special as it’s the 150th birthday of our ancient grapevine. The Black Hamburg vine in our walled kitchen garden’s greenhouses is believed to be second in size only to the Black Hamburg vine at Hampton Court.”

The positioning of Hackthorn Hall also means the Red Arrows practice their flight sequences right above them usually around twice a day unless they’re in Cyprus or elsewhere in the country. I was lucky enough to witness this on my visit, hopefully marking the first I’ve seen of a summer full of flyovers by the team.

96

If you’re interests are more inclined towards animals over aviation, you’ll appreciate the peacocks, pheasants, owls, robins, herons, woodpeckers, fish, muntjac and roe deer and, Keith’s least favourite Hackthorn residents ...moles. There are retiring horses too on the far side of the lake owned by the family.

If the horticulture, flora, fauna, flyovers, viticulture and architecture isn’t enough to attract you, there is also a scheduled ancient monument at Hackthorn. This is protected and not open to the general public, although visible from your tour with NGS. We thoroughly recommend a visit to fully appreciate the estate in its entirety. For a small charge in groups of over 20, you can have a private tour of the gardens too. n

Hackthorn Hall Location: Hackthorn Hall, Hackthorn, Lincoln LN2 3PQ. Open Garden Events: NGS event on Sunday 10th June with plant stand, refreshments etc.£3.50/adults, children go free. Also open on Sunday 2nd September for an open garden event. Proceeds for this event go towards the Hackthorn Church. If you would like a private tour of the gardens for groups of over 20, please call Fran at the estate office on 01673 860423 or visit the website www.hackthorn.com.

The ‘You Only Live Once’ Ball at

Woodland Waters

The YOLO Fundraising Ball - or the ‘You Only Live Once’ Ball - was held at Ancaster’s Woodland Waters to fund arthritis research.

Sleaford family Katie O’Halloran, Katie Brockington, Lucy Creedon, Jackie Creedon and Suzanne Creedon planned the charity

ball. This is the fourth YOLO ball and numbers have raised from 120 to 200 guests.

“My cousin Lucy woke up at 18 at university and couldn’t move,” says Katie. “Salmonella food poisoning led to her getting osteoreactive arthritis overnight and her body had locked.”

The family did everything they could to help her and she’s gradually recovering. The ball is a way of supporting everyone else who suffers with arthritis. n To find out more about the illness, and to support the great cause, visit www.arthritisresearchuk.org.

WEDDINGS

The Little Things

From a red carpet to the church, gypsophila in the bouquets and fairy lights behind the top table, Lucy focused on the little details to make her wedding day the most memorable and beautiful day of her life... Images: Nick Austwick Photography, 07545 099281, www.nickaustwick.com.

Finer details in decoration make a wedding memorable, and recruiting a company dedicated to venue decoration is definitely worth it. That’s exactly what Lucy and Matt decided on for their wedding in Grimsby.

Lucy is a staff nurse on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Matt is a Morrison’s manager. Both grew up in Grimsby and knew each other through mutual friends. They first met in a nightclub in Cleethorpes!

“Matt proposed to me three years into our relationship,” says Lucy. “His proposal wasn’t the most romantic; he did it in the living room of our new house! We were going on holiday the day after, but he was scared of losing the ring or me seeing it in his case at the airport so the thought was there.”

Lucy and Matt enjoyed their holiday as a newly engaged couple, chatting about wedding ideas, and started planning as soon as they returned home.

“We chose the reception first - Oaklands Hall Hotel - as it was local to us and we loved the venue. Then we chose the church.”

“I saw Nick Austwick’s work online and booked him on the spot, I loved his style of photography. I knew I wanted a venue stylist and came across Jack loves Jill. I loved her work and introduced her to florist Treasured Bouquets. We all met and plans fell into place.”

The Wedding of

LUCY AND MATT

“For the decorations and flowers, I said I liked a rustic look with whites and greens. Thanks to the amazing work and ideas from them, the venue looked fantastic. We were a blank canvas and let them do their job! I loved the lanterns on the ceiling and the huge LOVE letters were my favourite.” “I loved my dress by Augusta Jones. I wanted something fitted and when I saw the lace with the long train I knew it was the one.”

“For the wedding rings, we knew we wanted simple plain bands. That way, it would make my engagement ring stand out!”

“The cake tied in with our rustic theme. We had four tiers. Two were lemon sponge, then chocolate and also vanilla. My twin sister also bought bride and groom caterpillar cakes! We both used to have a caterpillar cake for our birthday when we were younger.” “I loved walking down the aisle and had the honour of my dad giving me away. I was very nervous and didn’t sleep the night before but Matt told me that he slept okay and wasn’t nervous! When I saw Matt, I completely relaxed and saying our vows was really special.”

“The wedding reception was fantastic. We were both overjoyed at having all our family and friends there that could share our special day with us. The room looked amazing and everything ran smoothly.” 103

- WEDDINGS -

“The evening do was the best party. After our first dance, we had clubland classics on till late..!” “The food was brilliant too. The evening reception was the best party. Our first dance was to Ed Sheeran’s song Perfect. Then we ended the night partying to clubland dance music from the 90s!”

For the newlyweds honeymoon, Lucy and Matt travelled to Rhodes in Greece. They decided on a relaxing holiday rather than an adventurous action-packed one, and Lucy especially enjoyed the swim up pool room and free mini bar! “Many thanks to Oakland’s Hall Hotel, Nick Austwick photography, Jack loves Jill for venue styling, Treasured Bouquets for flower and Nadia from Travelling make up artist for doing my hair and make up making me feel beautiful.” “Also, thanks to all our family and friends that came to celebrate with us. It was the best day of our lives so far! Special thanks to both sets of parents who helped contribute to our special day.” 104

LADIES

Inspiring WOMEN

The WI, formerly known as the Women’s Institute, is growing. Lincolnshire comprises three federations, and the South Lincolnshire federation’s Chairman along with the longest-standing and shortest-standing member explained to us what the WI’s role is in the 21st century... The WI is a group too often associated with being a thing of the past. Beginning in 1915, the federation came about from a need to support rural women and to encourage country women to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation. Since then, the organisation has grown to become the largest women’s voluntary organisations in the UK with over 212,000 members in over 6,300 WIs. Sleaford is home to the South Lincolnshire Federation, one of three federations in the county. In the South Lincolnshire group, there’s around 60 different WIs.

Debbie Venn is chairman of this federation, formed in 1977, but the WI has been here since 1917 with the first institute to open in Colsterworth.

“We have 68 very active institutes ranging from The Deepings in the south to Witham St Hugh’s in the north,” says Debbie.

Alongside Debbie was Sue Billyard from Dorrington and Jean Cox from Leasingham. Jean is the longest standing member in this area of Lincolnshire, having been a part of the WI for over 52 years. “I joined in Suffolk when a lady I knew invited me to attend,” says Jean. “I’ve been

and entertainers as well as educational speakers and lecturers at our events.”

Sue has been in the WI for 18 months, after trying it out 23 years before with three young children. Now they’re all older and moved out, she’s had the time to rejoin the group. She’s now soon to be the president of Dorrington’s WI.

in it ever since! I enjoy the friendships you make in the group and the educational aspects of our monthly meetings.”

“The concept of our monthly meetings is educational, but we try to make them fun,” says Debbie. “As long as you have learnt something, it counts! So we’ve had magicians

“I joined because of the friendship element,” says Sue. “But after attending several meetings I enjoyed the educational element of the WI more. It’s something that’s hidden, and not a lot of people know about; you join thinking it’s going to be a fun way to socialise but it’s actually a lot more than that.” All three women agreed on one point; the core values of the WI remain unchanged. Over the past 100 years, the purpose of the groups are the same.

“Some WIs only communicate electronically while others are meeting at people’s homes and coffee shops whereas they used to be held in village halls,” says Debbie. “However the values remain the same, and we’re open to women of all ages and from all different backgrounds.” n For more information and to join your local WI, please visit www.thewi.org.uk or call Debbie’s office on 01529 302398 based on Oak Park, East Road Trading Estate, Sleaford.

GOLF

A Hole in One There’s a number of golf courses across the county, and whether you’re a beginner, a more advanced player or a professional, there’s something for you. We recruited some of the PGA professionals in the county to provide their golf tips and expert advice... Whether you’re a beginner, a keen player or a professional, Lincolnshire and the surrounding area has plenty to offer all golf players.

Alison Johns from Woodhall Spa Golf Club is a PGA Professional and coach. Alison represented England juniors, ladies and Great Britain, played on the ladies European tour, and she has been a PGA professional for 25 years. “I have been at Woodhall Spa, the national golf centre, for 10 years as a PGA teaching professional.”

“I represented team GB 2015 in the world transplant games held in Argentina, where I won a gold medal in the individual golf event and a bronze medal in the team event. I was also the Midland PGA Professional of the Year in 2015.”

It’s no secret that Alison knows almost everything there is to know about golf. She offers her advice whether you’ve just started playing, you’re a big fan of golf and play regularly or you’re looking at becoming a professional.

“The best way to start the sport is to visit your local club. Book a lesson with the golf professional and find out if the professional 118

“You can also visit a website called Get into Golf, where they will have details of local clubs to you, offering beginner group lessons. You do not need any golf clubs to start your lessons as the professional will provide these, so you can see if you like the game first, before you purchase equipment.” “Playing golf is great fun. It’s good exercise and it’s a chance to get out in the fresh air. On playing 18 holes you walk between three and four miles so you can burn up to 1000 calories. It’s also a social game, where you can enjoy time with your friends and make new friends.”

“Being a professional coach for so long, I’ve seen long term friendships made through golf. It can be as friendly or as competitive as you want it to be.” “Another brilliant feature to a game of golf is that different levels of players can compete against each other due to the handicap system. You can go on to represent your county and even country if you are good enough.”

“Your eyes have a big effect on how you sequence your putting stroke. Try practicing short putts with a tee peg in the ground next to your ball. Keep looking at the tee and you will get used to not following the ball with your eye. This is great for holing short putts...” If you’ve been playing golf for a very long time and you’re thinking about becoming a professional, there’s one way of doing so. Aspiring PGA pros have to enrol as registered assistants and take a Foundation Degree in Professional Golf run in association with the University of Birmingham.

Neil Harvey is a PGA Advanced Coach at Woodhall Spa Golf Course. He became a professional in 1991, has an excellent track record of group coaching and his work encouraging juniors into the game is highly regarded. His coaching philosophy is focused around the belief that a full assessment of your game is essential before any program starts. He gave us his top tips on improving your game.

“A good short game exercise is benchmarking approach play, to help set goals for improvement,” says Neil. “Pitch 20 balls from different positions, one-by-one, from the greenside up to 50 yards. Measure the average finishing distances from the targets. Calculate your percentage of single putts from that distance. Then do it again!” “Your eyes have a big effect on how you sequence your putting stroke. Try practicing short putts with a tee peg in the ground next to your ball. Keep looking at the tee and you will get used to not following the ball with your eye. This is great for holing short putts.” “On your chips and pitches, the club needs to approach the ball on a downward path. To generate backspin, keep the club travelling forward without the shaft angle changing. Keep the loft constant to allow the ball to roll back up the grooves on the clubface.”

“Good tactics on the course can always save you shots. When you are standing on the tee, have a look at the widest part of the fairway. Pick the right club to go that distance, rather than just hitting as far as you can. The second shot will be greenside much more often – avoiding the dreaded double bogey!”

“Using a driver usually can fill many golfers with terror. The main thing to remember is that the golf swing is a throwing action. Tee up near the inside of your forward foot, look at the back of the ball, keep your grip soft and throw the club-head through the ball. It’s like skimming a stone at the beach.”

Pet-Friendly flooring is flawless! BOSTON Paws a moment and consider the perennial problem perturbing pet people; maintaining a smart home whilst in the company of man’s best friend. Fortunately, Floors for Paws can offer the UK’s leading pet resistant flooring with its scratch-resistant layer providing a skid-proof finish for scrambling terriers and lumbering labradors alike. Floors for Paws is a pet-proof, stain-resistant and anti-slip flooring system guaranteed for 25 years in domestic environments and has been used not only in domestic homes but in veterinary practices, nurseries and hospitals too. Emulating wood flooring, there are 18 different colours to choose from and the product is priced from £19.95 to £29.95. It’s available to purchase directly from the company and can be installed by your own contractor.

The flooring was designed following the plight of Belle, a lovely retriever who was diagnosed with a floating kneecap following complications during birth. With just three fully functioning legs, she was a little off balance and was prone to skidding and slipping on smooth surfaces. Her condition also made it inadvisable for her to lay on cold, hard flooring. The creation of Floors for Paws has helped to provide a safer, more hard-wearing floor to prevent Belle from slipping over; one that’s also warmer, more hygienic and scratch -resistant too. The company also helps Dog’s Trust to fund their valuable work by donating 10% of all profits from Floors For Paws to the charity. n The flooring is available in Lincolnshire now, and you can obtain a free sample pack by calling 01205 761779 or by visiting www.floorsforpaws.com.

The Lindum Group has been placed 22nd in this year’s Top 100 list, up 15 places from last year. 007 in Soft Top

HEAVEN Aston Martin’s DB11 now has a soft top stablemate, a convertible or ‘Volante’ version of its flagship GT. James Bond and other aspiring spooks will be in soft top heaven...

Aston Martin DB11 Volante 4.0V8, on sale April 2018 £159,900

James Bond. What a poser. And yet, we gentlemen would all like to be just like him; tough, gritty, cultured, magnetic of charm and equipped with the latest gadgets. But there’s a problem. Bond’s current motor is the DB11, the production version of the DB10-badged prototype - which was never actually on sale but was produced by Aston Martin both for the film and as a teaser for its flagship DB9 replacement.

The DB11 is a fine car. More than fine. It’s beautiful, fast and more luxurious than its predecessors. The thing is, it was also born as a coupé, and if you want to show off - really show off - it needed to have its roof cut off, so everyone can see you as you cruise around in what is arguably the sexiest GT in its class.

And so; ‘voila!’ or rather, ‘Volante!’ because that’s how the new soft top version of the DB11 will be badged when it reaches showrooms, just as Pride goes to press. >> 125

Desirable Drop-Tops for Summer Touring...

Mercedes-AMG S-Class Convertible S63, £140,610: The closest competitor to the DB11 from Mercedes is the AMG-tuned S63, with the same V8 engine as the Aston Martin. Like the coupé version of the DB11, the Mercedes is also available with a V12, but don’t bother. There’s enough performance to spare from this V8, with a limited 155mph top speed and 60mph reached in 4.2 seconds. Unlike the DB11, the Mercedes is a four seater, and comes loaded with standard equipment. It also has a truly cosseting cabin. n

Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible, £156,381: Porsche’s 911 comes in a variety of confusing permutations... Carerra, GT, Targa, convertible, S, Turbo, etc etc., but a DB11 budget also puts a range-topping Turbo S 911 on the menu, with a 3.8 litre six-cylinder engine. Standard equipment isn’t as generous, and it’s a two seater, but 60mph is reached and breached in a light-speed 3.0 seconds flat, with 205mph possible on a track day. Porsche’s handling is unsurpassed, and the 911’s evolutionary style makes it a true modern classic. n

>> Despite being climatically challenged, the UK is actually the biggest market in Europe for the sale of convertibles.

There’s something perverse about the country with arguably the rainiest, greyest climate loving open top motoring, but I suppose we are the ones with the clichéd cultural preoccupation with the weather. Anyway, more of an issue than the lack of sunshine is the £15,000 premium you’ll pay for a lack of roof over a coupé model. Range Rover Evoque HSE Dynamic Convertible 2.0 £55,585: OK, so here’s a curve ball. If you’re budgeting £159,000 for a DB11 convertible, how about purchasing an Evoque convertible and using the remaining £100k to purchase a coupé version of Aston Martin’s Vantage, with the same 4.0V8 engine, instead? Land Rover’s drop-top 4x4 has divided options, but we love it. Chunky, fun and well-equipped in HSE Dynamic trim, you’ve a 4x4 for winter, a soft top for summer, and an Aston Martin for your daily commute! n

126

Nonetheless if a ruffled pompadour and the odd fly in the teeth is your thing, you can dispense with the eight layered electrically operated fabric roof and enjoy the stiffening and chassis tweaks that Aston Martin have

1 - Lincs Pride MAY 190.qxp 03/04/2018 12:11 Page 127

The V12 is overkill; Aston’s fettling with the Mercedes-sourced V8 is a better option. It’s refined with a good spread of torque... employed to ensure your wind in-the-hair experience is unburdened by the shimmying traditionally associated with conversion from coupé to convertible.

The Volante has Aston Martin’s Mercedes AMG-sourced 4.0V8, rather than its own in house V12, and there are no plans for the latter to be dropped into the soft top at all.

That’s no bad thing, because the V12 is an overkill. The V8 is actually better; lighter, with a good spread of torque, better economy

and damn near identical performance figures, which, incidentally, are best summed up as equally capable of warp speed performance or refined A-road cruising. Not withstanding stunning looks, handling, and performance, the DB11 has also undergone a quantum leap in its interior. There’s a modern infotainment system, more standard kit and better materials than ever, plus near-infinite ways to customise what’s arguably one of this summer’s most desirable drop top GTs. n

ASTON MARTIN DB11 VOLANTE Price: £159,000. Engine: 4.0V8, 675nm/503hp. Drivetrain: Eight speed auto gearbox, rear wheel drive. Performance: 0-60mph 4.1 seconds; 187mph top speed. Economy: 28.3mpg combined. Equipment: Electric roof, seats, climate, cruise, parking sensors and camera, sat nav. n

ROLLS ROYCE

ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY? ROLLS ROYCE HOPES SO... As Rolls Royce prepares to release its flagship 4x4, the Cullinan, for an anticipated £250,000, the firm has released a couple of teaser images of its Viewing Suite. The seats are automatically deployed from the boot at the touch of a button and provide two seats plus what the firm is calling with no sense of shame - a ‘cocktail table.’ The seats are covered by the tailgate and form the ideal vantage point from which to watch polo, or point-to-point... presumably whilst one enjoys a Mojito or a Peach Bellini? n DASH CAMS

DASH CAMS INCREASE IN POPULARITY AS MOTORISTS GUARD AGAINST INSURANCE FRAUD It’s estimated that there are now 3,000,000 dash cams in the UK. Mounted to your window, the units record video of the front or rear of your car, saving footage to a memory card and overwriting the oldest footage. Recorded material can be used to guard against crash-forcash insurance scams and to report dangerous drivers. The units cost from £25 to £100 and some have night vision systems too. They could reduce your insurance premiums by up to 10%. Material is admissable as evidence and may be used in court. n

WANT AN EXECUTIVE CAR THAT’S EASY AROUND TOWN? MERCEDES IS A-OK!

MERCEDES A big car in a compact body style; that’s the concept behind Mercedes’s new A-Class range. The car will feature engines from 1.4 litres in size, to 2.0, with a 1.5 diesel engine from launch. Plug-in and hybrid variants will launch later, and the car is expected to cost from £25,000, topping out with a turbocharged flagship 2.0 AMG performance model.

The new A-Class features a larger cabin, larger boot and plenty of room for passengers, plus technology that has filtered down from the company’s S-Class limo, such as Distronic autonomous driving technology and latest generation adaptive cruise. Its new twin LCD screens replace conventional speedo and the car’s rev counter dials. n www.mercedes-benz.co.uk

Estate of the Art Volvo... VOLVO’S NEW V60 HAS BEEN INFUSED WITH V90’S DNA

Oversized, over the top and over here. Ford F150 reaches the UK FORD Farmers seeking a 4x4 that’s a little more, um, rugged, than Toyota’s Hilux and Nissan’s Navara will express delight at the arrival of Ford’s US pick-up the F150 in the UK, at £36,000. The car is ludicrously oversized, hardly subtle and not exactly frugal, with a 3.5 litre V6 engine that Ford claims will deliver 16mpg. Frighteningly, the pick-up all 5.7 metres of it - will reach 60mph in five seconds and 135mph flat out, though probably not off road, where its low range gears and nobbly tyres will help to surmount - or simply flatten - anything that stands in its way! n

VOLVO Volvo can do no wrong right now. Its XC90 4x4 was met with wild reviews, and the estate version, badged V90, was just as warmly received. This month the V60 will appear in showrooms, an estate car designed to go head-to-head with the Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3-Series and Audi A4. It represents an important car as Volvo gains even more credibility to compete with top German marques. Yet Volvo’s minimalist Scandinavian-inspired cabin proves that the Swedes can still muster up a sense of ingenuity and style. In short, we think Volvo’s new models are great! n See ww.volvocars.com for more.
