welcome letter Julian Wilkinson
Managing Director
It’s a busy time here at Pride Magazines. Just a day before our editorial deadline, and with a set of magazines completed and proofed in front of me, I would ordinarily be looking to write this, the final page of the month, before a comparatively quieter week planning the next edition’s content.
However, with the success of a business comes the need to grow it, and that’s why we’re doubling the size of our offices, with a refurbishment both of our new premises and our current ones, with a view to accommodating twice the number of staff we currently employ. Ian Bagley
Production Director
Next week will be rather busier than a typical post-deadline one, with the last of the tradespeople putting the finishing touches to our luxurious new offices, and a recruitment drive for new candidates already underway.
Back to this edition though and we’re gearing up for another important event, this year’s Lincolnshire Show. In this edition we’ve a preview of the event and an exclusive interview with this year’s President Robin Battle.
Zoie Wilkinson
Advertising Director
Elsewhere we’re going wild with nature on the East Coast, we visit Gainsborough to view the costumes from BBC TV’s Wolf Hall and we’re discovering the history of the silver screen at Woodhall’s Kinema in the Woods. With lots of beautiful products for the home and a trip to two quality pub restaurants for summer dining, as well as fashions and accessories from some of Lincolnshire’s best independent retailers, we hope there’s a great deal to keep all of our readers entertained in this edition.
Our best wishes for a wonderful month, Emily Brown

Lincoln Knights ride into the city
HISTORICALLY-THEMED TOURIST TRAIL UNVEILED AS PRIDE GOES TO PRESS LINCOLN Lincoln’s residents can celebrate the city’s heritage this summer by embarking on the Lincoln Knights’ Trail. The 35 knight sculptures have been sponsored by local organisations, and will form a trail across Lincoln to create a journey of discovery during the summer, commemorating and celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln and the Charter of the Forest. Following a call for artists back in September 2016, over 200 innovative designs were submitted and were shortlisted down to 70. Artists were given the opportunity to paint their design onto a miniature Knight sculpture. The 35 sponsors then had the job of selecting their favourite design for the full-sized Knights. The Battle of Lincoln was the culmination of King John’s rebellion against Magna Carta, which he sealed in 1215.
By May 1217 the city of Lincoln had been taken by the French - except for Lincoln Castle, which held true. The Royalists of Henry III claimed victory - saving Lincoln and

England from coming under French rule. The Charter of the Forest, a companion charter to Magna Carta was subsequently sealed, re-establishing the rights of free men. SKEGNESS It’s hard enough for humans to find love, so spare a thought for poor Nudge, the Skegness zebra shark who’s looking to share his life - and his aquarium - with a suitable lifetime mate. Fortunately, internet dating may come to the rescue, with an online equivalent for marine life being employed by staff at the aquarium. Reaching maturation at the ripe old age of four, Nudge’s details can now be added to a ‘stud book’ which should attract a suitable mate enabling the pair to breed in captivity.
n The Knights’ Trail will run from 20th May until 4th September throughout the city. Thereafter the knights will be auctioned to raise money for the Nomad Trust. For details of the trail, visit www.visitlincoln.com
Nudge lives at Skegness Aquarium, a visitor attraction based in what was the Panda’s Palace indoor play facility. Opening in June 2015, the aquarium boasts a number of exhibits from marine life to creepy crawlies, including the main 340,000 litre Sunken Hold tank in which Nudge will live once large enough. We hope that Nudge manages to find his perfect mate soon, but if not, well, as the saying goes, there’s plenty more fish in the sea... n Skegness Aquarium is based on Tower Esplanade and is open seven days a week. A Lincoln firm’s generosity has ensured the restoration of East Kirkby Lancaster Just Jane can remain on course. Work had stalled after the team - which is embarking on a £3.5m restoration aimed at ensuring the aircraft flies again after being grounded for 50 years - ran out of the specialist paint needed for the aircraft. A donation of eight different types of paint by Lincoln’s Witham Group has put the restoration back on track. Bracebridge Heath’s Jeremy Jones, Lincoln’s Gail Kirk, Brigg’s Nick Schimmel, Hykeham’s Cher Sutton and Baston’s Mark Richardson all ran for the county’s ambucopter, helping to raise the £2.1m needed annual to keep the service in operation. Lincoln’s Carl Belcher ran for LIVES, having been one of 700 first responders working with the service since 2013 to provide emergency medical intervention.
THE LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW returns to the county this month, and will contribute £4.3m to the local economy as more than 60,000 visitors make their way to the Grange de Lings showground for the event. 300 miles in just 24 hours for Dave
CYCLE CHALLENGE TAKES PLACE NEAR BOSTON THIS MONTH FOR BUSINESSMAN BOSTON Friends and family of Boston businessman Dave Booth will this month embark on an epic charity bid to raise £10,000 for their chosen cause, The Brain Tumour Charity. Dave was diagnosed with a Grade Four brain tumour in June 2016 and died in November last year. On Saturday 10th June, over 50 participants will embark on a cycle challenge to raise money for the charity by following a circular route beginning at Kirton’s Black Bull pub and finishing there 24 hours later. The cyclists will cover anything from 20 miles but a hard core contingent of the fundraisers will cycle around the route day and night, to cover 300 miles in 24 hours, completing their challenge at 10am on Sunday 11th June. “Dave was an inspiration, an astute businessman who wore his heart on his sleeve,” say the event’s organisers.
“He was a larger than life character whose infectious personality always shone through, a true gentleman to the very end. In his 51 years he had an incredible life... a loving wife Karen and two
beautiful children, Chris and Jen, whom he adored.” “Most would agree, Dave was the ‘go to’ man; a real friend when the going got tough. Now it’s our turn to give something back.”
“We will all be wearing red to support the charity, as we cycle the route around places of interest to Dave, and would love the public to register for the event and join us, to donate to the cause via our Just Giving page or, even better, to come along on the day and cheer our participants along too! The last lap is set to be a celebratory one with Champagne and it will culminate in a barbecue at the Black Bull.” The Brain Tumour Charity is at the forefront of the fight to defeat brain tumours, making a difference every day to the lives of people affected by this terrible disease, and helping their families too. n The Dave Booth Memorial Cycle Challenge will see over 50 participants, covering anything from 20 miles to 300 miles in just 24 hours. Visit www.justgiving.com to donate or spectate along the route on Saturday 10th June from 10am. For more information call Antony on 01205 722530.

FEEDBACK
YOUR NEW LOOK PRIDE Thanks For Your Feedback!
Your new-look magazines recently introduced a premium feel to the county’s finest magazines, Lincolnshire Pride and Rutland Pride. Our Publisher, Julian Wilkinson, had some really great feedback following our relaunch, and wanted to share some of your kind words with you!
Thanks so much! That’s the message from Pride’s publisher, Julian Wilkinson, in response to the positive feedback we’ve received following the release of our new look magazines.
“I’ve been in the publishing industry for over 32 years and I’ve seen a number of changes in that time,” he says. “One thing that’s remained consistent is the need to improve your products, though... even if you think they’re already best in class.”
“We took the decision to change the format of the magazine and produce it on a thicker, matte paper known in the industry as bond.”
“The idea was to position the magazine as the county’s finest publication not just in terms of its content, but in terms of its weight and feel, too.”
“Alongside the new paper, we opted for a front cover concept which was bold to say the least. It was designed to stand out from the crowd but even within the office it proved a controversial choice. I invoked what’s jokingly known in the office as ‘Publisher’s Privilege’ and kept to the bold look. It was a gamble, in hindsight, but one that really paid off; fortune favours the bold!” “The feedback we’ve had has been superb. The whole team already felt that it would support our position as the county’s best magazine, but the response that we’ve had from readers and advertisers has more than confirmed that belief too.” 16
“Part of our success has been in bucking the trend of falling retail circulations that have affected other areas of print publishing.”
“This month Pride magazine will celebrate its 15th anniversary...”
“Nationally, print publishing is taking a beating from the effect of online media and, latterly, social media. Falling advertising revenues have hit publishing companies especially larger ones - hard, but we buck that trend and we even experienced significant growth through the recession of 2008.”
“We’ve continued to grow since, and our magazines are in the strongest position since establishing the company in 2002.”
“This month the magazine will celebrate its 15th anniversary and life in the media is still tough, but honestly, I wouldn’t want to swap our portfolio of magazines with any others.” Above: Pride Studios, home to Pride Magazines. We’re doubling the space we occupy and refurbishing our existing offices.
“A number of years ago, we realised we needed to supplement our retail, subscription and bulk drop circulations with a smarter way of ensuring as many people as possible read Pride. That’s why we curate a huge database of quality homes and high net worth individuals in the county.” “For over six years now we’ve been directly mailing our publications, free of charge, via Royal Mail, each month, to those homes and individuals, providing us with not just a large quantity of readers, but a good quality of readers too - those in a position to enjoy the high end products our advertisers offer.”
“In addition to working on our flagship June editions, which is circulated at The Lincolnshire Show and Rutland Show, we’re doubling the amount of office space in the luxury barns we occupy to allow us to double the number of staff we employ, paving the way for our continued expansion over the next decade.”
“We’re a hard working team, which is why we value such great feedback, and whilst we were expecting that the response would be positive, even we were taken aback by the lovely comments we’ve received. We’re publishing just a few comments here, but to everyone who took the time to email or call in, we extend our sincere thanks and best wishes!” n

The Blankney Hunt Ball Over 1,000 guests celebrated at the End of Season Ball in Newark
The Blankney Hunt Ball for the end of the 2017 season took place recently, once again held at the George Stephenson Exhibition Hall at Newark Showground.
The hunt’s territory draws in subscribers living in both Nottinghamshire and our own county - mostly from Lincoln and
Sleaford - so over 1,000 guests came from far and wide to enjoy a champagne and cocktail reception and a four course supper.
Entertainment included dancing to a live band and an unusual array of entertainment including aerial acrobats who performed their routines above guests’ heads.
Previous themes have included Circus Time and Alice in Wonderland, but this year’s theme was a more understated, but stylish, sophisticated Black & White and as our photos show, guests had an absolutely wonderful time!

LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW 2017
This year’s Lincolnshire Show takes place in June, and as its 2017 President Robin Battle says, the hard-working team behind it has been able to continue the successful formula by providing everyone with a shop window on Lincolnshire farming in the twenty first century alongside a great day out for all of the family. How important is farming to you? “Born into
a farming family, it’s in my blood. We’ve been farming in Lincolnshire for over a century, and I’ve been a member of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society for over 50 years.”
“In addition to farming, my career has been as a partner in Jas Martin & Co, a local firm of land agents, advising owners of farms and estates throughout the East Midlands, and helping them to make the most of their rural property.”
What does the role of Show President involve? “I’ve served as
treasurer and chairman
LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW
IN NUMBERS 133: This will be the 133rd show. The event began as a travelling show in 1869 and moved to its current, permanent site in 1959. 270: The show is arranged over 270 acres, with car parking for 12,500 vehicles, 10,000 square metres of marquees and 60,000 annual visitors.
600: The show has over 600 trade stands and commercial exhibitors. 2,500: There’s a livestock and equine population of 2,300 at each show - including 1,700 horses, plus 1,000 cattle, pigs & sheep, in 11 show rings. £4,300,000: The Show brings over four million pounds into the county each year. Visitors travel up to four hours away and spend an average of £71 on food and smaller items. n

of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society in the past. In January this year I was delighted to have been elected Show President for 2017. It’s essentially the role of figurehead for the Show, welcoming guests and visiting stands on both days of the event, and thanking everyone for their support!”
What are the 2017 show’s main highlights?
“The Showground team continue to introduce new features to the Show each year which helps it to keep evolving and attract new audiences. The Aviation Zone returns for its second year, ahead of the Scampton Air Show later this year, as does the Education Marquee which is great for the younger visitors.” How has the show changed over the years?
“I’ve been coming to the Show for over 50 years, and one of its biggest strengths is the fact that the organisers have managed to expand the event, improve it and diversify it without compromising its role as a traditional county Show, designed for a core audience of farmers, landowners and everyone in the rural sector. There’s a greater diversity of attractions and events at the Show each year, and it’s grown a great deal. The Showground has a wonderful facility in the form of the Epic Centre which whilst being the main pavilion for the Show and overlooking the Main Ring, has also become one of the county’s leading events venues throughout the year.” What do you enjoy most of all about the show?
“The sense of community that it gives those in the rural sector, despite Lincolnshire’s vast area compared to other counties. I really enjoy bumping into old friends and being able to show my support for them. With Brexit on the horizon, farming in this country is facing an uncertain future. The Show provides an opportunity for visitors to have a great day but to learn about farming as it is today and the enormous importance of a viable farming industry in the future.” “It reinforces a sense of community amongst everyone in the rural sector at a time when we need to pull together to succeed.” >>

WILDLIFE ON THE EAST COAST
GOING
WILD ...on the East Coast!
It’s a seaside resort best known for providing 8,000,000 holidaymakers with loud, lively entertainment each year, but Lincolnshire’s East Coast is also home to Gibraltar Point, and its new visitor centre, with its spectacular June highlights... Words: Rob Davis, Images: Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.
Skegness is ‘so bracing,’ not to mention loud, bright and frenetic. In the summer months, think of Skegness and you’ll typically think of fast rides, fish suppers and all of the excitement of a resort which attracts over 8,000,000 annual visitors. But there’s more to Skegness and than buckets and spades.
Lincolnshire pioneered the creation of the UK’s Wildlife Trusts in 1949. Gibraltar Point was the first of 100 nature reserves to be managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and the trust itself was the first of 47 similar organisations across the UK.
the site were the only ones who remained high and dry. The site reopened with a brand new £1m visitor centre in May 2016, and it’s a pretty spectacular building, elevated on top of screw piles with super efficient insulation, solar heating, but also near panoramic views of the 1,100 acre site. For visitors who know of the site, but haven’t thought to visit for a while, this month is the ideal opportunity to rediscover one of the UK’s most well-managed reserves, with its unique range of saltmarsh-loving wildlife.
The terrible storm surge of December 2013 destroyed the visitors’ centre with flooding half a metre deep and would-be visitors to
“The new visitors’ centre we’ve created is a wonderful gateway to the nature reserve,” says Rachel Shaw, communications officer for the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.”
“LINCOLNSHIRE, SPECIFICALLY GIBRALTAR POINT, PIONEERED THE CREATION OF THE UK’S WILDLIFE TRUSTS IN 1949...”
“The sea still covers the saltmarsh at higher tides, and the plant life has adapted to cope with salt water. Next month will see arguably the reserve’s most striking plant, sea lavender, covering the marsh with a carpet of lilac.” >> 37

WILDLIFE ON THE EAST COAST
>> “During this time skylark and meadow pipit can be seen performing their song and their aerobatic flights, which is a real spectacle for birdwatchers.” “Gibraltar Point is also the last remaining nesting site for little terns all along on the Lincolnshire Coast and we’re taking special measures to help them.” “Little terns nest on the ground, and their eggs and chicks are really well camouflaged, so we’ve established a sanctuary area to ensure their safety.”
“The reserve is renowned not just for these examples, but for a remarkable 3,500 different species, from 330 species of bird life to 421 different species of flowering plants. There are 4.8km of coastline, 9.5km of paths and nine birdwatching hides.” The reserve’s new visitors’ centre ensures Gibraltar Point is accessible not just physically, with its level paths, but to those who are less knowledgeable when it comes to identifying species, with plenty of interpretation, lots of literature, and regular ‘pop in’ events which are publicised on its social media channels.
With a nautical look to its indoor café and an open rooftop viewing gallery, it’s a great space to enjoy good coffee, some very very good cake... and to look out on the reserve Right: Skylark image by Amy Lewis. Below: Barrie Wilkinson took this image of sea lavender which provides a vast carpet of lilac over the reserve in July.
when the bracing coastal winds would otherwise make doing so quite unpleasant. “We’re really pleased with the new visitors’ centre,” says Rachel. “It will give the whole reserve real appeal to a broader range of visitors throughout the year, and even beyond the stunning range of wildlife which can be seen here, we’ve created a great place to enjoy a coffee on the East Coast.” Even for those who don’t consider themselves that knowledgeable when it comes to the natural world, Gibraltar Point is now, more than ever, a great place for those who want to enjoy a walk, soak up the sunshine or just enjoy the reserve’s scenery. n
Gibraltar Point Walks 1. Take a short walk past the Coastguard House to the Wash Viewpoint for views across the saltmarsh and mud flats of The Wash. 2. Head along the tarmac track known as South Marsh Road across the saltmarsh, through the dunes to the new saltmarsh, head south to the beach. 3. Walk back along the road and explore the woodland walk. Carry on past the woodland to the hides overlooking the freshwater wetlands of Jackson’s Marsh and Tennyson’s Sands.

BATEMANS BREWERY VISITORS’ CENTRE
BATEMANS The Home of ‘Good Honest Ales’
Established over 140 years ago and producing 7,500,000 pints each year, Batemans is the county’s largest brewery, but it’s also a great visitor attraction if you’re seeking a very ‘Lincolnshire’ day out this summer... It’s the award-winning brewery dominating the skyline of the East Coast and putting Wainfleet on the map. Batemans ale is one of our best exports as a county and has managed to establish itself as a 21st century brewery producing over 7.5m pints without ever sacrificing the tradition and provenance of its quality during its growth. “We’re renowned for producing good honest ales, but we’re also one of the best days out on the East Coast,” says Judy Philips.
“We offer brewery tours of the Victorian brewhouse which provide a real education as to how the brewery used to operate, but also, how we’ve managed to scale up production.”
“So many people know of the company and have enjoyed our ales, but have never visited us for a tour, which is a real shame as the process of creating quality ale is really fascinating - a mix of art and science.”
Words & Images: Rob Davis.
“For the past four generations we’ve been based here the whole site has become a really good attraction, from the ‘theatre of beers’ - the old brewhouse - to our restaurant, and the artefacts room, a museum all about the company’s history. We’re open right through the summer until August seven days a week and we’re always happy to meet fans of real ale.”
“We may be a little bit biased but we think we’ve a terrific heritage and we love sharing it with the thousands of visitors each year who come to have a look round, enjoy freshly cooked food in the restaurant and find out more about one of the county’s best loved products!”
n Batemans Visitor Centre is open seven days through summer with tours taking place at 12.30 and 2.30pm. For more information call 01754 880317 or see www.bateman.co.uk.

- KINEMA IN THE WOODS -
95 Years of the
Silver Screen The Kinema in the Woods is a true gem in our county. It’s a time capsule hidden in Woodhall Spa that you have to explore... Words & Images: Tilly Wilkinson.
The cinema provides a true sense of escapism. A chance to escape from the mundane normalities of reality, and to live the life of an adventurer or a pirate, or perhaps a superhero.
That has never been more true than at the Kinema in the Woods at Woodhall Spa. It’s truly magical and will overwhelm you with nostalgia as well as escapism.
The owner, Philip Jones’s collection of signed autographs and old photos is incredible, and alongside artefacts from a number of major movies, the Kinema could easily be mistaken for the National Film Museum, if it wasn’t for the 230-seat Kinema One and 92-seat Kinema Too.
The name derives from an old Latin phrase that was often used for cinemas across the country. The more popular French version replaced the word kinema and would be lost
in history if it wasn’t for cinemas like the Kinema in the Woods, who decided to keep it because of its heritage. It first came into existence sometime in the late 19th century as a sports pavilion for cricket and bowling and part of the Victoria Hotel, that has now sadly been destroyed.
In 1922, Lady Wiegall converted the pavilion into a cinema. Cinemas were very up and coming at this time and she was a very wealthy landowner. She also played a vital part in the construction of Jubilee Park, the outdoor swimming pool in Woodhall Spa.
Royalty, aristocracy and the general public shared an evening out in Woodhall Spa in the 1920s.
Princess Marie Louise, grand daughter to Queen Victoria at the time, visited the cinema in addition to Lord Clydesdale who 49

flew over Everest then watched his achievements on film in the Kinema.
There were originally no toilets in the Kinema either so it was one willing youngster’s job to walk anyone in need to public conveniences nearby. Major Allport assisted Lady Wiegall in creating the Kinema, and managed it up until 1973. James Green then discovered the cinema.
He owned a similar theatre in Staffordshire and was looking to invest in another. He owned the Kinema for 40 years until its current owner Philip Jones took over in 2015.
Philip’s passion has always been in cinematics, becoming a projectionist after finishing his studies. He has worked at the Kinema in the Woods for the past 13 years.
What the Kinema is known for, other than its history, is its organ. The Compton Kinestra was beautifully designed and built for Charing Cross in London in 1928, but after several years it was no longer needed and kept in storage until James Green, previous owner of the Kinema, found it and bought it.
It’s called a Compton Kinestra because it is meant to represent a full orchestra and is played during the interval, a tradition still carried out today. Alan Underwood is the organist, literally growing up with the instrument playing it from the age of 13.
Another uniqueness about the Kinema is the way it presents its films. Because it has so much history, the way the films are shown had to evolve with the times.
TIMELINE of the Kinema
1844: A Victoria bath house and hotel was built in Woodhall Spa.
c.1888: A pavilion was built for the hotel, used as a cricket and sports pavilion. This later housed the Kinema.
1920: The Victoria Hotel burnt down, destroying the relationship between it and the pavilion. Lady Weigall bought the land and the pavilion would temporarily house a cinema.
1922: The Kinema in the Woods was opened by Lady Wiegall and Major Allport as part of a leisure complex to the Victoria Hotel in Woodhall Spa. It was first named the Pavilion Cinema.
1930: The name of the cinema was changed to the Kinema in the Woods. ‘Talkies’ (non-silent movies) were also shown for the first time. The first was ‘Interviewing Wild Animals in Africa.’

“We’re one of the only cinemas in the UK that uses rear projection. The parallel beams supporting the roof are too low to project a film from the back of the audience, so we have to follow on the traditional way of projection from behind the screen.”
Kinema Manager PHILIP JONES
This means that the films you see at the Kinema have to be projected onto a mirror and reflected backwards onto the screen to make it viewable to the audience. In 1994, Kinema Too was opened. Its first screening was Four Weddings and a Funeral. Being the smaller of the two, you could be mistaken into thinking it wasn’t as good as Kinema One.
However Murray Hubick, a canadian artist, was commissioned to paint incredible murals on the walls in the Trompe L’Oeil’ (trick of the eye) manner. This means the paintings look real. Its intimacy and just 92 seats make it the perfect cinema for romantic or relaxed films. Above: The Compton Kinestra. Right: Current owner Philip Jones. Below: Models of Hollywood stars you’ll find in the Kinema. Left: The exterior of the Kinema.
“Cinemas were seen as a real luxury in years gone by,” says Philip, current owner. “No one had televisions, so it was a revelation. When the Kinema began, the lighting, sound, and picture was all controlled manually. Nowadays, everything is controlled by one computer, and films are scheduled at the beginning of the week. However, there’s one thing we haven’t changed simply because of logistics.”
1950: Lady Weigall died in November.
1973: Major Allport died in the 1970s and James Green opened up at the Kinema. His first screening was the film A Clockwork Orange.
1986: James Green bought the Compton Kinestra. Alan Underwood started playing it in 1988.
1994: Kinema Too was built, first showing Four Weddings and a Funeral.
This cinema today shows the very latest releases and is open every day of the year apart from Christmas. There are three full-time staff and 10 part-time staff.
If you haven’t visited the Kinema in the Woods, you need to go to experience the true nostalgic escapism that’s very much needed in life occasionally. The feel of the Kinema is of true luxury, a feeling I imagine you get when seeing an opera or ballet.
We’re so lucky to have this cinema which has nearly been around for 100 years, and we wish it every success in the future.
1996: A plaque was unveiled at the front of the Kinema marking 100 years of British cinema.
2015: Philip Jones took over management of the Kinema and runs it to this day.
Phillip Jones is the current owner of the Kinema. Growing up in nearby Kirkby on Bain, he started working here in 2004 as a projectionist and fell in love with the charm of the place. “The Kinema was my childhood cinema and I was always very fond of it. My neighbour one day mentioned there was a job going there, so I applied.” Philip studied management at university but would continue to work at the Kinema during the summer. He now has a family who also regularly enjoy films at the Kinema.

WOLF HALL COSTUMES
WOLF’S CLOTHING
Attracting up to 6,000,000 viewers, 2015’s BBC Two drama of Cromwell’s rise to power in Elizabethan court was a lavish TV success, and now you can see Wolf Hall’s costumes, created by production designer Joanna Eatwell as they appear at Gainsborough Old Hall.
The costumes in the summer exhibition depict the main players in the show including the fashionable and attractive Anne Boleyn, her sister Mary (a previous mistress to King Henry), Catherine of Aragon, the unfortunate queen cast aside once she was too old to provide a male heir, and many of the powerful men at court such as Cardinal Wolsey and the Duke of Norfolk. Visitors will also see costumes that reflect Thomas's humble beginnings as a low-born urchin – a stark contrast to the luxurious trappings of court-life. Henry VIII visited Gainsborough Old Hall in 1541, where he was lavishly entertained by the Burgh family who owned the hall at the time. n Costumes From Wolf Hall will run throughout June until 28th August at Gainsborough Old Hall, Parnell St Gainsborough DN21 2NB. Call 01522 782040, or see gainsborougholdhall.com. Open Mon-Fri 10am-4pm; Sat/Sun 11am-5pm, £8.50/Adults; £6.70/conc.

THE RED LION AT BICKER
Ye Olde Red Lion
IN BICKER
For those seeking quality dining, but in a more casual environment, one of our favourite restaurants remains Bicker’s Red Lion Inn. A former haunt of Fenland pirates, it has masses of character and some compelling dining options... Some might think that formal restaurants have had their day. These days we all expect quality dining at our local pub, and fine dining restaurants can look a bit stuffy next to the rustic cosiness of places like Bicker’s Red Lion.
Words & Images: Rob Davis.
The pub restaurant offers that fine cliché, the best of both worlds; great quality food, prepared with skill and presented brilliantly, but also the setting of a lovely old pub with its flagstone floors, nobbly beams and loads of character. Today the pub isn’t on the coast, but back in the 16th century, when the place was first created, The Red Lion was on the edge of the Fens and was originally a lighthouse.
Its position reportedly made it popular with smugglers, but over 350 years on, the clientele has improved and now it’s frequented by a nice mix of locals and those from slightly further afield.
“THE PLACE OFFERS THAT FINE CLICHÉ, THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS; GREAT QUALITY FOOD, BUT ALSO THE SETTING OF A LOVELY OLD VILLAGE PUB...!
meet the CHEF YE OLDE RED LION’S HEAD CHEF PHIL PACK
The Hobble Barn at the back of the pub is a 60-seater restaurant, characterful space.
To our mind though, one of the nicest aspects of The Red Lion is its cosy feel, with lots of little dining space and nooks, from The Smuggler’s Den to the Lions Laird dining area to the front of the pub.
These give the impression of dining at a friend’s house, rather than a restaurant, and with stripped pine furniture, sofas and chairs in the bar and rustic decoration, the place is about as friendly and comfortable as it’s possible for a restaurant to be.
Food Experience: “I was born in Spalding, and raised on good food and local veg. My mentor was Roy Macfarlane, I worked with him at Cley Hall in Spalding, and later in his seafood restaurant in the Isle of Man. I came back to the county, to The Mill in Boston in 2012 and started here in January 2015.” Food Heaven: “I enjoy fish I love our sea bass dish, prepared simply to let the flavour come through.”
Food Hell: ”Branston Pickle!”

>> Fortunately, this sense of cosiness doesn’t detract from the flawlessly created food available during both lunchtime and evening service. The Red Lion is in the custodianship of the Duffy family, who have been farming the area for a number of years.
Lunchtime service sees a choice of six starters and eleven main courses, including a pie of the day, ‘gourmet’ burger and sausage & mash and haddock & chips options. They’re all homely dishes, but are executed and presented beautifully.

Evening service, meanwhile, sees a more comprehensive menu comprising six starters and fifteen main course options, including four steaks. There’s another option, too, in the form of The Red Lion’s Lincolnshire Tapas.
I’ve seen a couple of restaurants jumping on the bandwagon, but this is the place that pioneered fourteen ‘mix-and-match’ options that you can choose from either to graze on whilst enjoying drinks, or as a main course option.
Lincolnshire sirloin, Lincolnshire pork and apple meatballs and Lincolnshire pork belly all feature, so if you’ve friends from out of the county visiting the area and want to show off some of our best produce, this is a delicious recommendation! Fish used in the restaurant is landed in Grimsby, Bycrofts of Boston, Boston Sausage, Lincolnshire Game and Jonathan Hull all contribute ingredients, and a team of chefs headed up by Phil Pack and Adam Nagy and Matt Walker all ensure everything from the restaurant’s tiny tapas treats to its Sunday carvery are the very best reflection of quality pub restaurant dining.
As soon as the weather improves, The Red Lion’s beer garden provides a great outdoor space to dine, and the place often provides live music on selected dates too. It’s a popular place in the summer, hence the introduction of a loyalty card system where customers collect stamps for complementary drinks and so on. Ladies Night event and quiz nights are a regular occurrence, which support local charities including Boston’s talented young pianist Isabella King as are gourmet evenings, held (roughly) bi-monthly. Look out for a Lincolnshire Show-themed gourmet evening in mid-June, and an event around Bicker’s Steam Threshing Festival in September. With all the charm and informality of a pub but the quality dining of an à la carte restaurant, Bicker’s Red Lion Inn is a spectacularly recommendable place at the best of time, but in summer, you’ll love the outdoor spaces, tapas dining and other treats it has to offer diners. It’s one Red Lion which will have you positively roaring with delight! n

THE QUEEN’S HEAD
The Queen’s Head at KIRKBY LA THORPE
A fresh start, with fresh produce and a new chef at Kirkby la Thorpe’s Queen’s Head. It’s one of our favourite quality pub restaurants, and a fresh infusion of talent will increase its appeal even further this summer! Her majesty is a national institution, but in Lincolnshire, we’ve a very noble institution of our own, a pub restaurant that has, for years, remained one of the county’s most popular, most consistent and most well-regarded dining options for those who know and love food.
Words & Images: Rob Davis.
Love at First Sight: “I’m local to the area and worked at RAF Cranwell and at Grantham’s Angel & Royal before joining The Bustard at South Rauceby, and serving as a relief chef at Sleaford’s Millers.”
The Queen’s Head at Kirkby la Thorpe is situated equidistant from Boston, Lincoln, Grantham, Newark and Bourne, and just a stone’s throw from Heckington and Sleaford.
It’s well-positioned, despite its proximity to the hardly romantic thoroughfare of the A17, and is a former coaching inn, dating back to when the latter was a little dirt track road connecting Sleaford and Boston.
Around 20 years ago it was purchased by restauranteurs John and Paul Clark, who extended it several times and created new bar areas a conservatory and a new entrance, providing the place we know and love today.
“JOHN IS BACK IN THE KITCHEN AND THIS SEASON, HE’LL BE JOINED BY CHEF CHRIS SPENCER, FROM THE BUSTARD, AND MILLERS...”
meet the CHEF
Very sadly, the pub restaurant lost Paul in 2016 following a short illness, and with a book of condolence in the restaurant, customers have been expressing their sadness at the loss of him at front of house.
After a short time away from the restaurant, John is back in the kitchen and this season, he’ll be joined by new chef Chris Spencer. Chris joins the team from South Rauceby’s Bustard Inn, and Sleaford’s Millers, and together with Neil Kent, the three will begin revising the restaurant’s menus to freshen up The Queen’s Head’s provision of à la carte dining for summer 2017.

Food Wisdom: “I joined the Queen’s Head in March because I like the idea of working for a team which values good, fresh ingredients and ideas!”

>> regular customers it’s nice to offer something a little different and provide some fresh options.”
“We’re keeping the most popular dishes, some of which it’s more than our life’s worth to take off the menu, but these will be supplemented by some newer, slightly lighter and more modern dishes.”
Our photos show the dishes which will appear on the restaurant’s summer à la carte menus. The menu is served seven days a week during both lunchtime and evening service, with further Suppertime Specials throughout the week.

The Queen’s Head’s menus provide a choice of 11 starters, 12 main courses, four grill options and 10 desserts plus a cheese option. There’s also a selection of specials on the blackboards, adjacent to a whole host of awards including Lincolnshire Pride’s Restaurant of the Year title.
Surrounded by fields, it’s little surprise that John and the team are keen to espouse the virtues of a wealth of local suppliers. These include fish landed at Grimsby and delivered daily by M&J Seafood, as well as Boston’s foremost supplier of shellfish, Gerald Fletcher.
Meanwhile, meat arrives at the restaurant courtesy of Mel Ward of Ruskington, Grasmere Farm and Peterborough Game as well as Mountains; aka Boston Sausage.
Naturally for a restaurant keen to imbue each dish with quality ingredients and chefcraft, all bread, desserts and sauces are homemade by John and the team. The chefs acquiesce only to the expertise of Robin Dennett of Spilsby, and his selection of ice creams and sorbets, the quality of which, to be fair, any chef would struggle to match. This year has seen a subtle makeover of the dining room with new curtains and soft furnishings in February, plus a makeover of the conservatory last June.
Meanwhile, with Chris joining the team and a couple of new apprentices due to start, too, an old favourite is gearing up to improve its dining experience even further as Pride goes to press.
This month then, we’re keen to encourage all of our readers to revisit The Queen’s Head. With fresh dishes on the menu and a keeness to impart Lincolnshire provenance into its dishes, the team is keener than ever to provide compelling dining that’s a right royal celebration of quality dining.

RECIPE BY STEVEN BENNETT
Carrot Cake in a Plant Pot with Edible ‘soil!’ Ingredients: (Carrot Cake) 250g Self Raising Flour, 2 Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon, 400g Caster Sugar, 350ml Vegetable Oil, 4 Eggs, 350g Grated Carrots, 120g Chopped Walnuts.
(Buttercream) 225g Cream Cheese, 110g Butter, softened, 450g Icing Sugar, 120g Chopped Walnuts, 1 tsp Vanilla Extract.
(Edible Soil) 70g plain chocolate, finely chopped, 100g caster sugar, 2 tbsp water.
1
To make the edible soil, heat the sugar and water in a pan to 130ºc. Once golden and once all of the sugar has dissolved, remove from the pan and whisk in the chocolate bits, stirring continuously and making sure all of the sugar coats the chocolate. Leave to one side to cool, until ready to use. and store in an airtight container.
2
For the carrot cake, preheat oven to 180ºc and grease two 23 - 24cm round cake tins. In a medium bowl, combine flour, cinnamon and sugar.
3 4
Gradually add the oil and eggs, mixing until combined, and fold in the carrots and nuts.
Divide the cake mixture between the two cake tins and bake for 25-30 minutes.
5
To check if they’re cooked, place a skewer in the centre; it will come out clean once cooked. Leave the cakes to cool and leave to one side.
6
To create the buttercream, cream together the butter, sugar and cream cheese and the stir in walnuts and vanilla. Once the cakes have cooled, take a large mixing bowl and crumble in the sponge.
7
Line up your miniature plant pots and place in a spoon full of crumbled carrot cake and dollops of cream cheese, until filled.
8
Sprinkle with edible soil and decorate with your favourite edible flowers or herbs. n

Just over the county border, Warner Edwards’s Melissa is a lemon balm gin that’s just great for summer!
If you’re an equal aficionado of both gin, and of the summer months, you’ll love the Northamptonshirebased Warner Edward’s limited edition Melissa gin. Botanicals include minty lemon balm so it’s very refreshing and zesty. It also comes with seeds to enable you to begin your own botanical garden, too!
“This is a very special Champagne, boasting not just the usual three, but six grapes, for a complex, refined and elegant flavour. It’s stunning for summer celebrations!”
The Wine Cellar £39.95/70cl, 40% ABV.

Strawberry on the mid-taste, with berry aromas. £12.75 / 70cl / 10.5%. 2. Meanwhile, King Richard is England’s answer to an Alsace Gewürztraminer. Proof that England can yield fine fizz, this ‘Sparkling Orion’ has a delicate pear and lychee flavour with just a hint of peach with a delicate sparkle. Developing depth and complexity with maturity. £24.95 / 70cl / 11.5%.
A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Munier and Pinot Noir, Moutard Six Cépages has a unique blend has a delicate mousse complementing the biscuity and citrus fruit flavours. Complex, refined and elegant. n
Sulphite Free Wines Natural wines which help you avoid a hangover!
Sulphites are added to wine as a preservative. Some object to them on health reasons, or in the belief that sulphite-free wine makes you less prone to a hangover! The latter is a debatable claim, but this month’s duo of organic wines, both free of sulphites, are delicious nonetheless.
n Gérard Bertrand’s Syrah and Chardonnay weigh in at 13.5% each, and are £12.99/70cl.
n Our featured wines are available from Lincolnshire’s best independent wine merchants, prices RRP and may vary from those stated.

A TRUE FAMILY HOME - LINCOLNSHIRE HOMES -
Words: Rob Davis.
74
Bracken Lodge is a true family home, created by husband and wife team Peter and Debbie Jackson, and Peter’s brother Paul. Serial property developers, it was supposed to be the family’s ‘forever home...’ until they got itchy feet!

BRACKEN LODGE WOODHALL SPA
Above: The house has open fireplaces and solid ‘block and beam’ floors.
What is it about property development? It’s an expensive ‘hobby,’ and one that tends to take over your life, but it’s also really addictive, a compulsion that overrules all of the mess and expense as you expend labour, cash and stress in pursuit of perfection.
Peter and Debbie Jackson love creating beautiful family homes, and together with Peter’s brother, builder Paul Jackson, they’ve totted up no fewer than nine properties in Woodhall and East Keal.
You’ll be forgiven for recognising the name, after all, Peter Jackson is very well-regarded in the county indeed as the owner of his namesake firm of cabinet makers based in Horncastle, which crafts really beautiful kitchen, studies and bedrooms for clients across the county.
The couple found the site in 2005 and spent two years creating the house, moving in just before Christmas 2007.
“We found the plot, and set about creating our ‘forever home,’” says Debbie. “The house sits on about half and acre, which is a decent size without being too overwhelming.”
Location: Six miles from Horncastle, 20 miles from Lincoln. Style: Newly created executive family home completed in 2007. Bedrooms: Seven; master with en suite and dressing room; second en suite, Jack & Jill; second floor family bathroom. Receptions: Seven, currently arranged as reception hall, sitting room, dining room, breakfast kitchen, snug and games room. Other Features: Heated indoor swimming pool, solar panels. Price: £1,150,000.
“Our daughters attended St Hugh’s School in the town, which is a terrific place, but we found ourselves on the school run so much that a move into Woodhall made sense.”
“The house is arranged over three floors, which has given each of the rooms a larger footprint, and we set about creating a real family home with an open plan living kitchen that would enable us to all spend time together.” 75
1 - Lincs Pride JUNE 179.qxp 08/05/2017 11:23 Page 76
“We wanted a large hallway, but one which wasn’t just a waste of space, so we created a really nice dining area in the hallway. We also wanted a formal sitting room, and a smaller snug for watching TV.”
“We commissioned Lincoln based Grayfox to create a heated indoor swimming pool with a sauna, and there’s plenty of practical space too, including a salon, from which I run my hairdressing business.”
You’d expect Peter’s home to feature a pretty fabulous kitchen, too, and it really doesn’t disappoint.
The hand-made oak cabinetry is painted in two Farrow & Ball shades, Stone White (which is actually a sort of sage colour) and Old End White. Appliances are from Neff, and include a wine chiller and integrated dishwasher and microwave. 76
The whole room, its island, and its adjacent utility is smothered in oak timber, black and mottled cream granite, and the room has a living area and dining area, with log burners to key rooms, limestone floors and underfloor heating to the pool complex.
Upstairs, the master bedroom has an en suite and dressing room, and there’s an en suite for the guest room, plus a ‘Jack & Jill’ for two further bedrooms. The second floor is dedicated to guests and has its own family bathroom, too.
Created in Hanson Desimpel heritage brickwork and topped off with a slate roof, the house sits beautifully in a plot designed to provide ultra-low maintenance. The rear of the house is raised to accommodate the depth of the pool, with an adjacent terrace area leading down to the gardens.
Box hedging and acers ensure a garden that provides maximum character with low maintenance, while both indoors and outside iron balustrating, bespoke oak staircases and exposed brickwork successfully mitigate modern features with a period look.
“We’ve absolutely loved living here and we really think that we’ve got the layout spot on,” says Debbie. “We promised ourselves this would be the last time we built a new home, but sure enough we’ve seen a plot and we’re embarking on the adventure all over again! We think we’ve created a lovely family home, and we believe that its next custodians will think so too!” n
Above: As you’d expect, the kitchen, built by Peter, is a tour de force of design and technology!
Right: Debbie didn’t want the entrance hallway to be a waste of space so the couple created a dining hall.

COLIN LUESBY INTERIORS
KITCHEN Creating Your Dream
The tradespeople you can trust, backed up by a team of in-house fitters and over 60 years experience. If you’re seeking a new kitchen, Colin Luesby Interiors can design and install a space that’s fit for family life, and will look great for years to come...
84
Creating your kitchen means trusting someone to work with you to design a space that’s fit for purpose, aesthetically pleasing and sufficiently well made to last for years.
Heading up the business for 22 of its 60 years, Paul Trevor of Colin Luesby Interiors creates beautiful kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms for both modern and traditional homes anywhere in the county.
“It’s really important to provide customers with a really good, really collaborative design process,” says Paul. “There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all kitchen, as every home and every family is different.”
“The secret of customer satisfaction is to find out exactly what the customer wants and needs, and to guide them through the
1 - Lincs Pride JUNE 179.qxp 08/05/2017 11:24 Page 85
- HOMES -
technical feasibility of creating their dream kitchen, giving ideas when necessary and making sure that the whole room works practically, and looks great too.”
“From that point on, all that matters to most clients is the ability to have their new room created with the minimum of disruption and fuss. And that’s the other skill we have; co-ordinating all of the tradespeople needed from builders to plumbing, electrical and gas contractors, right down to tiling, flooring and decorating. Any issues which arise are our issues to resolve, and all the customer sees is a well-organised, team who are clean and tidy, who are professional, and dedicated to the pursuit of craftsmanship.”
Colin provides the best-priced madeto-measure kitchens with work surfaces in
modern, sophisticated materials like Corian & Silestone, sinks from Franke and appliances from names like Miele and Neff.”
“Customers return to us for other rooms in their homes - bedrooms and bathrooms from names like Volanté and Utopia because we provide the same service that we ourselves would expect to receive. I began my career as a fitter, and we use in-house fitters too, so there’s no evading responsibility when you install each kitchen. Our customers expect the perfect finish, and so would we. That’s why we work hard to maintain a reputation that’s hard-earned.”
“No matter what the vision for your kitchen, we can help to create it with less disruption, more design flair and exceptional attention to detail.” n

LYNX AC LYNX AC LINCOLN
Keep Your Cool this Summer with
Bassingham based Lynx AC are preparing for yet another busy Summer Season ! Directors Paul Green and Rob Pygott are pleased to announce the recent appointment of Contracts Manager Alan Craggs. Now in it’s 44th year the Company has been providing Air Conditioning and Ventilation Systems to the Industrial, Commercial, Retail, Leisure and Domestic sectors throughout the East Midlands and beyond. Most people’s conception of Air Conditioning is that it’s an expensive luxury that they can’t afford and something that only provides cooling and therefore really isn’t that necessary in the UK climate. This is simply not the case – try going out to buy a new UK spec car that doesn’t now have Air Conditioning as standard!
When you consider the outstanding energy efficiency of modern systems and their ability to control the indoor environment ‘All Year Round’ it’s hardly surprising that Air Conditioning is automatically specified in virtually every new commercial building in the country.
As the latest Inverter Type Systems provide very energy efficient heating as well as cooling it makes them ideal for use in Conservatories and other rooms within the home as well as shops and offices.
Words & Images: Rob Davis.
For every Kw of electricity used the systems will return between 3.5Kw & 4.5Kw of Cooling or Heating duty. No other type of system comes close to these levels of efficiency !
Lynx AC provide free surveys and quotations throughout the County so whether you require a large VRF System for multiple offices within your business premises or a single Split System for your Conservatory or Bedroom then give Paul or Rob a call.
Wall Mounted Systems start at under £1,500.00 – Fully installed, usually within a day.
n Lynx AC are based in Bassingham, Lincoln. Run by Paul Green and Rob Pygott the Company has installed Air Conditioning for Private Customers and Businesses since 1974. Call 01522 788799 or visit www.lynxac.com.
Paul Green, Founder & Managing Director of Lynx AC would like to personally thank Mr Roger Hales, Clerk to Bassingham Parish Council & Manager of The Hammond Hall & Sports Centre for his kind assistance and granting the use of this wonderful village facility for our photo shoot to take place.

ON THE FARM
Re-Connecting with the Countryside Farming and food production were once part of everyone’s lives in our county, but today, even if you live in a town or city, you can find out how food is produced by taking part in Open Farm Sunday or attending our county shows like any other industry, there’s a real need for farming to promote itself, says farming correspondent Alison Pratt...
Generations ago, most families in the county had a connection to farming. In our formerly ‘agrarian’ society, people grew their own food, slaughtered their own animals, made their own bread. Then along came the industrial revolution and everything changed.
Factories (the term is actually a contraction of ‘manufactories’) drew workers from the countryside and villages and our towns and cities grew and grew. This meant that most people couldn’t grow their own food, keep their own cow and certainly didn’t have the space or time to produce everything that a family would need to feed itself. Today only about 2% of the population is engaged in actually growing food, compared to the vast majority of us who, in the Middle Ages, would have milked a cow or grown a cabbage.
By the late 1700s, the agricultural revolution had begun and meant that farmers were breeding bigger and more productive cattle, sheep and dairy animals, cereal plants were higher yielding: the economics of food production had drastically changed as had the transport infrastructure – the advent of the steam engine, then the internal combustion engine meant that people and food could travel much further than a horse and cart would have allowed. But I’m not going to go over the whole history of food production, my point is that many of us don’t know how food is produced today – the work that happens in our fields, farmyards,
vegetables; all must have warm soils. Spring also sees farmers spreading fertiliser and making sure those crops are kept healthy and are not out-competed by weeds or eaten by pests. So if you see a tractor going up and down a field as you drive by, it’s doing something that is part of the great process that will end with a harvest of wheat for our Weetabix, barley for beer, or the production of innumerable other foods from cooking oil to potato crisps.
cowsheds and grain stores goes largely un-noticed because we don’t do it ourselves anymore – we leave it to our farmers and growers who produce about two thirds of all the food we eat every year.
This time of the year is, apart from harvest, the busiest time for farmers. Growing crops takes skill, timing is everything and of course, the weather plays an enormous part in what happens in the fields.
The crucial factor in spring is warmth: those of you who garden will know that you don’t put out your tender bedding plants, or plant potatoes or vegetables in cold, wet soil: you wait until there’s little or no chance of frost and the soil has warmed up nicely. It’s the same on our farms: planting potatoes, sowing spring cereal crops, maize, sugar beet, planting
And the sunshine makes the grass grow, too – just as important to feed our sheep, beef and dairy cattle and produce grass for silage and hay for winter feed.
If you would like to find out more about how food is produced today, you can. Open Farm Sunday on 11th June invites you to venture through the farm gate, into the milking parlour and grain store, walk through the fields and find out more about our farming industry. Hundreds of farmers across the country will welcome you to their farms; and many more will do the same at this summer’s county shows. They’ll explain how crops are grown, animals are looked after and how, farmers and their families have shaped the countryside to this familiar patchwork we love, today.
Re-connect yourself with farming and food and enjoy a fantastic family day out or two in our glorious countryside! n You’ll find your local Open Farm Sunday farmer here: www.farmsunday.org.

them rather than succumbing to an impulsive purchase which doesn’t quite fit the theme. A wedding stylist like Amanda may seem like a luxury, but they will keep your theme on track. They can provide, in addition, items like the confetti cones, stationery and invitations featured here. Gold creates a luxurious theme, and matches ivory or soft gold wedding dresses beautifully. It pairs well with crimson, too, and bolder red shades are especially suited to autumn and winter weddings.
Don’t be afraid to have some fun styling your younger bridesmaids - these girls had great fun on the shoot - and do consider stately homes like Burghley House as wedding venues if you’re seeking a dramatic backdrop! n

HOWELL EVENTS
Happily Ever After
The county’s brides-to-be are excited by the prospect of a new wedding venue in the heart of the Lincolnshire countryside that promises to combine rural style with a beautiful venue for your special day... meet the county’s New Event Organiser, Elaine Sardeson... If you’re looking for a wedding venue, there’s a new must-see option in the heart of the Lincolnshire countryside that promises a new, versatile approach to wedding planning.
“We’re currently looking into approval to convert some of our outbuildings which will provide us with a permanent venue as well as marquee options for events.
It’s located in the pretty hamlet of Howell, just a stone’s throw from Sleaford and Boston, on Elaine and Mark Sardeson’s 550 acre arable farm, Manor Farm.
“Already we’ve had some great feedback, both because of the setting and because of our ability to create a truly bespoke wedding or event in anything from a rustic to a more formal style.”
“We’ve been farming the land for seven generations now,” says Elaine. “It’s a great lifestyle and a really beautiful setting. Within the grounds is the Saxon St Oswald’s church, and we’ve panoramic views over some really beautiful countryside.”
“As a family we’ve already hosted our 40th and 50th birthdays, plus the 18th and 21st Birthday celebrations for our children Ben and Ella. For the Queen’s Jubilee we hosted a village celebration and we celebrated our silver wedding anniversary last year too.”
“There’s a great feel to Howell, and because we’re located in a rural area we’ve had some great family parties and get-togethers with the neighbours.”
“Because it’s an ideal location for celebrations, we’ve decided to make the farm available for rural weddings and other celebrations.” “We’re offering a completely bespoke venue for celebrations, partnering with some of the best names in the area. Brides planning their wedding can marry in St Oswald’s Church which has a capacity for congregations of about 100 - and then we can host wedding receptions for between 50 and 250 guests in a marquee on the lawn, a tipi, or in one of our barns with a marquee lining. We set up a
dedicated events company earlier in 2017 and obtained all of the necessary licenses and insurances.”
“There’s space for mobile toilet blocks and we’ve excellent partners in the form of events styling company Got It Covered Lincolnshire and outside catering specialists Farm Kitchen.”
“With the space, the suppliers and a truly unique setting, we’re in a great position to organise truly wonderful events and we’re looking forward to welcoming brides and grooms onto the farm for the first of our weddings in 2017. Hopefully they’ll be the first of many happy couples to say ‘I do’ and begin married life in Howell!”
n For more information on Elaine’s bespoke events company, Howell Manor, call 01529 460267 or 07761 406914. You can also attend the company’s open day and champagne and canapé reception, taking place on Monday 29th May from 11am - 4pm.

ANDREW MUSSON LINCOLN
GENTLEMEN Bespoke Tailoring for
What happens when a centuries old trade meets modern technology? If you download Lincoln tailor Andrew Musson’s app, you’ll find out, as Lincolnshire’s bespoke tailor goes online. With over 25 years experience on Savile Row, the luxury of bespoke tailoring has never been so convenient!
There’s nothing more luxurious for a man than bespoke tailoring. A made-to-measure suit, coat, or sports jacket that provides the perfect fit, great service and beautifully crafted fabrics all create a look, fit and feel that simply cannot be replicated with an off-the-peg suit, no matter what label has been sewn into the back. Our favourite tailor is Andrew Musson... and he’s the real deal, with 25 years experience cutting on Savile Row for high-ranking politicians and celebrities. Andrew returned to Lincoln’s High Street in 2008 to take over the business his father, John Musson, established.
Working alongside one another, the two provide two or three-piece suits, either made-to-measure (that’s measured to fit but laser cut off site) or completely bespoke, meaning that they’re
and in both cases undercutting the famous London street’s premium prices for bespoke tailoring by thousands of pounds.
measured, cut and fitted over several visits for the ultimate flattering fit and a feeling of luxury. Andrew’s bespoke suits take around 50 man-hours to produce, with over 2,000 cloths to choose from and prices from £1,395 or £1,795 for a two or three piece suit plus the tailor’s full bespoke service. Even Andrew’s made-to-measure tailoring starts at just £895, representing very good value against ‘designer’ off-the-peg suiting,

“We were really happy to have been chosen by Theo Paphitis of Dragon’s Den to win a Small Business Sunday award last year, but our real pleasure is in making our clients happy. A bespoke suit isn’t about the label sewn into the finished article,” says Andrew. “It’s about achieving the perfect fit and achieving a suit, hunting or shooting outfit, sports jacket or overcoat that looks and feels special and makes the wearer feel good every time they put it on.” Andrew’s discerning client base travels from a radius of around two or three hours, and can specify any cloth, lining, stitching and other detail. It’s a service that yields the perfect fit for smart businessmen, or the many grooms who visit Andrew each year to treat themselves to a bespoke suit in advance of their wedding day.
“We’ve a really diverse mix of clients but they all have one thing in common; they all value good service and the quality of their finished suit,” says Andrew. “From the first visit to be measured, and browse through English woollen cloths from names like Scabal and Dugdale Bros, to the two or three fittings each bespoke suit deserves, we really love making sure that every man is happy with his finished suit.” n Andrew is based at 39 High St, Lincoln LN5 8AS. “OUR THANKS TO
ANDREW!” TWO OF ANDREW’S SATISFIED CUSTOMERS
Christie Inman-Hall (above) Christie enlisted Andrew to create a beautiful brown Donegal tweed suit for his country wedding. “I’d wanted a hand tailored suit from a very young age and so to finally get one for my wedding was a very special thing for me indeed. Both Musson senior and junior made this experience everything I’d wanted it to be and more and for that I can’t thank you enough.” “I’ve had many, many compliments on the suit both on the day and since, so it’s fair to say the quality of the craftsmanship shines through in every stitch and every time I wear it I feel immensely happy and proud!”
Dr Mervin Wong (right) was delighted with his suit, created last year by Andrew to provide luxury on his wedding day in Malaysia. “It was my first time purchasing a bespoke suit and I couldn’t have approached a better tailor!” “Both you and your father gave really good advice and created a really beautiful handmade suit! n

CLARRIOTS CARE
The Company that Cares About You
If you’re concerned about losing your independence as you grow older, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or even the feeling of loneliness can be challenging to deal with, and you may feel the need to look for extra support. You should never feel like you have to move into a care home, however. Homecare providers, such as Clarriots Care, can offer you the highest standards of care, delivered to you in the comfort of your own home, allowing you to live life the way you choose... Clarriots Care, based in Louth, is a leading UK homecare provider that offers over 18 prestigious services, ranging from regular visits of Personal or Social Care to extended hours of Live-In Care, along with everything in between. They believe home is where the heart is, and always put the needs of you and your family first.
By helping you to create a personalised care plan tailored to your specific needs, Clarriots Care can deliver exactly the type of support you need to help maintain your independence.
Roger, 74, felt like he needed companionship and support after his family moved away. He soon got in touch with Clarriots Care, who were able to help.
“Over the last few years, simple tasks such as popping out to the shops and vacuuming the house started to become more difficult. 130
I’ve been doing them for so long, I think I took them for granted. All of my family that lived in the area have now moved away, and I didn’t want to bother them or feel like I’m getting in the way of their lives.”
“My daughter is a top surgeon at a hospital, and my son is a lawyer in a big city - they’ve both got lots of responsibility in their lives. I don’t expect them to have lots of spare time to come and look after me.”
“Life was very quiet, and I didn’t really have any friends. I felt lonely, and sometimes I didn’t speak to anyone for days. I became very anxious about silly things such as going shopping and even getting dressed. Shopping in particular took a lot of time and there’s so many people; it’s very busy. It was getting more and more stressful, and I never knew quite what to buy for myself.”
“When my children came down to see me at Christmas, they could tell that things were
getting on top of me, even though I never said anything. I’ve always been very close with my children, you see.”
“They could tell how I was feeling, and told me that I should think about making a change. My son asked me if I had ever thought about getting care. I said that I hadn’t, because I didn’t want to move out of my home. He said there were companies that could help support me in my home. I didn’t know this, I thought my only option was to go into a care home.”
“We did an internet search the next day and we found a company called Clarriots Care, a homecare provider. They offered lots of different services that could help me, and they also said that I could get a free care assessment within 24 hours of getting in touch with them. Although I was a bit nervous, my children encouraged me to give Clarriots a call.”
1 - Lincs Pride JUNE 179.qxp 08/05/2017 11:28 Page 131
“Sure enough, within a day a nice lady from Clarriots came round to my house and met me and my children. I was anxious at first but I soon realised I didn’t need to be. We had a cup of tea, a biscuit and a nice chat about the kind of problems I was having. Their staff are really friendly and easy to talk to. The lady explained how the services that Clarriots offered could help me stay independent.”
“After my care assessment, Clarriots agreed a care plan with us that had exactly the kind of support I wanted.”
“We agreed that a social care companion would come round twice a day to help me dress myself and help plan my meals. She would also take me shopping once every week and help me choose what I should buy. This meant I didn’t have to wake up every morning and worry about what I was doing that day. My care plan was more affordable
than I thought as well, and Clarriots helped me to find some assistance to pay for some of the costs too.”
“I am now very happy that I can stay in my own house, as I have lived here for many
“I’M NO LONGER LONELY AND I ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ONE OF THE GIRLS WHO SUPPORT ME...” years and love my home. I’m no longer lonely and I always look forward to seeing one of the girls who support me, I have a great friendship with them.” “They’ve even taken me out to activities going on in my area and I’ve made more new friends!”
Roger’s daughter, Susie, is happy that her father has a big smile on his face now every day. She said “I love my father very much, and I’ve been worried about him while he was on his own.”
“Now Clarriots are supporting him, I’ve got true peace of mind no matter where I am or what I’m doing that my father is being supported to a very high standard and that he’s happy.” Clarriots Care helps thousands of people like Roger and his family up and down the country every day, and they could help you too. If you or a loved one feels like you need a bit of extra support in your life, but don’t want to move out of the comfort of your own home, why not give Clarriots a call? They can’t wait to welcome you into their family. n To discuss individual care needs, Clarriots Care provide free, no obligation assessments - call 0333 200 5820 or see www.clarriotshomecare.co.uk.

“My life has taken such a turn for the better and I’m certain that’s because I’m smiling and more confident again...!”
Many times at the Dental Health Centre in Grantham we have seen the huge impact good dentistry has on people’s lives. But don’t just take our word for it; here is a review from one of our patients... “I used to be a patient at the Dental Health Centre years and years ago and I think my dentist left, so I did too. I really regret that. I honestly believe that if I had stayed there and had seen Colin Sutton for all those years I’d have perfect teeth now. Instead I had some horrible dental experiences that have really affected me – and my teeth.
“It was after I’d had a ten-crown bridge done at another practice, which looked absolutely awful, that I called the Dental Health Centre for a second opinion. I spoke to Paula Parkes, the practice manager, and she was amazing. She has been my personal point of contact ever since - I’ve never had that before and it makes a big difference. “Colin Sutton has been absolutely wonderful. I can’t sing his praises highly enough, or those of Paula, Julie the hygienist and the rest
of the team! They are all so lovely and I have gone from dreading the dentist to really looking forward to going. I don’t think many people can say that about going to the dentist but it’s true for me and it’s because they are such a fantastic team.
“My treatment has been wonderful. I’m very, very impressed all round.”
“I couldn’t live with how awful my teeth looked and the whole experience was really traumatic. I’d have never smiled again and I was so self-conscious. Teeth can make or break a face and Colin understands this.
Feeling that way about your teeth affects your life completely and I just want people in that position to know that it doesn’t have to be like that, there are solutions. If anyone has dental problems they should speak to
Colin Sutton. He’s worth travelling to and is such a perfectionist. He has saved the day!
“To have beautiful teeth and to have my smile back is worth every penny. It’s not just your teeth, they affect so much more, your personality, your wellbeing, everything. The Dental Health Centre has completely changed my life around.” If you would like to find out more about dental implants, please visit us for a free, 30-minute initial consultation with Colin Sutton

Schools Colleges...
St Hugh’s School, Woodhall...
Set in 32 acres of beautiful Lincolnshire countryside, we are a caring independent day and boarding school based in picturesque Woodhall Spa for pupils from 2 to 13 years old.
In the Nursery the children have a wonderful outdoor play area and access to an adventure playground, woods, French classes, Forest School, ballet and swimming lessons twice a week in our own swimming pool.
Highly qualified staff, small class sizes and a focus on all-round development enable our children within the main school to develop an enthusiasm for learning and to enjoy the success that this brings.
134
The school has some outstanding facilities with both academic and sporting pursuits benefiting in equal measure. Our sports pitches, including our new all weather pitch, are enviable and we have teams for all of the major sports and have achieved notable success in regional and national competitions. All of our children gain entry to their first choice senior schools. In fact, in the last two years, over 70% of our older children have been awarded scholarships to top independent schools.
We also offer the additional benefit of homely boarding accommodation suitable for both full and flexi boarding giving a wide range of options to choose from. n For more information, call them on 01526 352169 or see www.st-hughs.lincs.sch.uk.
Highfields Independent School...
Highfields School is an independent prep school for girls and boys aged 2 to 11, ranked 40th in the country in this year’s Sunday Times top 100 prep schools. Located just minutes from the centre of the historic market town of Newark, Nottinghamshire, Highfields enjoys a unique setting amongst 14 acres of naturally landscaped parkland. The school’s stunning grounds and gardens are an oasis of peace and tranquillity, offering a calm and inspiring environment for learning. Outdoor learning is at the heart of a Highfields education. All children in Pre-Prep and Prep are offered a weekly Forest School session held within the beautiful woodland spinneys. Other lessons too are delivered beyond the classroom where children are encouraged to enjoy their natural environment. Headmaster Richard Thomson explains. “Forest School sets learning in a different context for children where they can undertake a range of practical activities and carry out new but achievable tasks. In Forest School children can develop their team working skills and
also learn to become more independent. Those who are unfamiliar with woodlands and green spaces can become confident in using them and this can form the basis of a life-long relationship with natural spaces.” “Research now backs up what forest school practitioners have known all along – that children and young people are stimulated by the outdoors and typically experience, over time, an increase in their self-belief, learning capacity, enthusiasm, communication and problem-solving skills and emotional well-being,” says Richard Thomson. Highfields has recently adopted the University of Cambridge Primary Curriculum, giving the school the freedom to depart from the National Curriculum and the controversial SATs examinations. “One of the benefits of being an independent school is the ability to forge our own way, both in terms of our curriculum and the opportunities we can offer. By preserving key skills and encouraging academic achievement we provide what we believe is a richer, more progressive approach to learning in a school that’s big enough to cope and small enough to care.” n For more information about what Highfields can offer your child, please contact the Admissions registrar, Mrs Cleo Staniforth, on 01636 704103 or email her at cleo.staniforth@highfieldsschool.co.uk.

Kesteven Grantham Girls’ School...
Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School is a selective 11-18 academy. Situated on land overlooking the market town of Grantham, it attracts students from both the local area and further afield. Notable alumni include Margaret Thatcher, who was Head Girl here in 1943. KGGS boasts an impressive record of academic excellence, – a fact that recently placed the school in the top 4% of all schools in the country.
Our girls do very well at GCSE with just under 60% each year able to achieve an A* or A grade.
In the Sixth Form, we offer a wide range of A Level subjects. Results are consistently
impressive, enabling many of our students to attain places at the most selective universities.
In Key Stage 3, we offer a strong foundation with French, German and Spanish available as well as Mathematics, English and Science as part of a curriculum that embraces both academic and practical subjects.
Whilst our aim is to provide an environment which is stimulating and supportive, we are also keen to ensure that learning goes hand in hand with the development of the girls’ personal qualities. Accordingly, the school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities. There are exchange visits, foreign expeditions and involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. n For more information, visit www.kggs.org or contact the school on 01476 563017.
The Giles Academy, Boston...
A new academic year at Giles Academy has also meant the introduction of a new Head Teacher, Mr Ian Widdows, who had previously been in the role of Deputy Head. Mr Widdows has had plenty to oversee, with many events taking place over the winter and spring terms.
The entire cohorts of Year 8 and Year 10 students have been taking part in outdoor and group activities as part of our Giles Adventure scheme. The aim of this scheme is to enhance students’ wellbeing and development through a range of outdoor activities. It’s been a busy few months for the Arts at Giles Academy too with Sixth Form Performing Arts pupils attending the annual ‘Move It’ dance trip and Year 9 and Year 10 students visiting the Theatre Royal in Nottingham to watch an
138
operatic version of Hansel and Gretel.
This year has also seen another increase in the intake for September 2017. Staffing and facilities are already in place to ensure the best provisions for not only the New Year 7 students, but also our current students. This is a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of staff in our school.
Finally, as a parting gift, acting Head of P.E Guy Bull will be renovating our Japanese Garden as part of its tenth anniversary, built in part to celebrate the relationship with our link school in the Japanese city of Hakusan.
And this is all just in the first half of the academic year! The second half is still to come and there is plenty still to look forward to, including the Year 11 and Sixth Form prom and our school production of The Addams Family. n For more info call 01205 870693 or visit www.gilesacademy.co.uk.

New Youth Theatre, Grantham...
Performing before an audience takes nerve, discipline and courage; things that grow bit by bit through encouragement. New Youth Theatre respects those who have even the simplest wish to dare to push their talent that little bit further so that at some point along the way a child is able to command an audience with a solo performance in a leading role.
North Kesteven School... North Kesteven School produces confident, well rounded individuals who excel both academically and personally.
Our staff relentlessly pursue excellence for all through our “no excuses” culture, our strong behaviour expectations, and our good relationships with parents. Our creative and innovative teaching methods are reflected in our “good” Ofsted grading in March 2015.
North Kesteven School and Sir Robert Pattinson Academy have worked together for the mutual benefit of students for over twenty years. Our experienced and dynamic
staff achieve excellent results across a wide range of courses.
We offer a superb post-16 education experience which maximises academic achievement, whilst our strong enrichment programme increases employment prospects and personal development.
Well, that’s the stage for you. Once the curtain has come down, what then? Unless you’re going to brave the acting profession as a career choice, what else can the experience of time spent with New Youth Theatre give a child?
Well, for a start they’ve been in a team. The leading players have more often than not come through the chorus or else helped with making the sets.
They’ve had to rub along with each other for the greater good of the show, so the experience friendship and cooperation has rounded their characters.
Let’s link this to an ability to stand before 200 strangers and use a developed talent to bring about tears and laughter and you have an individual who will shine in an interview and demonstrate a personality that’s ready to fit in with the adult world of work, especially if that interview includes a presentation. Employers are looking for personality and character, and that’s what we offer.

Ranby House Preparatory School...
Just found out your child’s allocated primary school for September and not entirely happy? You’re not alone.
For many parents with four or five years olds, finding out their child’s allocated earlier this week was a nerve-wracking time! And with the news that many didn’t get their first choice - Ranby House School’s Headmaster Christian Pritchard explains why so many parents who might have chosen state school are now looking to the independent sector – especially as the all-inclusive fee model means private school is more affordable than one might think.
“With a school day that starts from our popular Breakfast club and finishes after Homework Club, our parents have the flexibility of ensuring that family time at home really does mean family time – and that costly before and after-school care is

included,” says Mr Pritchard.
“We’ve recently increased our offer of specialist subjects and lessons into Early Years and Years One and Two and our Sports programme is continuing to grow. This includes various fixtures with increased access to sports coaches, additional options such as tennis and swimming, as well as the development of a superb music and drama programmes for all children”.
“For many Ranby House parents, the fact that clubs, societies and sports opportunities are included in our fees is key – enabling children to try their hand at a variety of different things, without parents having to budget for extra-curricular activities.” “It’s not too late to take a look at other options - so we’d encourage parents to come and visit us and find out whether Ranby House could be the right school for your child.”

MOTORS
BENTLEY’S OFF ROAD FLAGSHIP
Proof that big is beautiful, Bentley has released a new flagship Mulliner version of its hulking Bentayga SUV, and it has its eyes firmly fixed on the flagship Autobiography variants of Range Rover, offering off-road ability, huge reserves of power and unashamed luxury... Words: Rob Davis.
1 - Lincs Pride JUNE 179.qxp 08/05/2017 11:29 Page 155
Bentley’s Bentayga was never an exercise in understatement. But a new variant looks to reaffirm its Range Rover challenger’s position as king of the road. Debuting in 2015, and released in 2016, the 12-cylinder 4x4 SUV was later joined by a (slightly) more modest V8 diesel, but for Bentley purists, the V12 remains king, and now, there’s a new flagship variant, which has adopted the brand’s Mulliner nomenclature.
The existing Bentayga already costs north of £160,000. Mulliner spec adds duotone paint, model-specific 22” wheels, an ‘ombré burr walnut veneer,’ which gradually transitions from black to burr walnut, as well as 15-colour mood lighting and a Mulliner champagne cooler with Cumbria crystal flutes in the rear. Also standard is a Breitling clock machined in solid gold. There are, however, a few rather more practical touches too. A beefier 48v electrical system powers Bentley’s Dynamic Ride system, eliminating almost all body roll.
“For Bentley purists, the V12 remains king, and now, there’s a new flagship variant...”
There’s a Touring & City pack, too, which adds adaptive cruise and night vision. The enhanced electrical system also powers a Naim-branded audio system with no fewer than 1,950 watts and 21 channels. The cabin is a masterclass in craftsmanship, with bespoke options, lavish materials and space. Yet, with the drivetrain’s ubiquitous traction and 4x4 systems its off-road limits are only determined by your willingness to scuff the pristine bodywork of your £180,000 motor car.
The power of the Bentayga’s W12 engine is impressive, but we have to question who would dare unleash all of the car’s 600bhp. It has epic reserves of power, and a frightening amount of grunt. Assuming your wealth has also brought a desire for self-preservation, you probably won’t want to be driving under sufficiently irresponsible engine loads as to necessitate all 12 engine cylinders, and unlike Audi’s implementation of the W12 engine, there’s no cylinder shutdown technology to mitigate power and economy.
BENTLEY BENTAYGA
MULLINER Price: £180,000 (approx, price TBC). Engine: 6.0-litre W12, 600bhp. 0-60mph 4.0secs; 187mph max. Economy: 21.6mpg, 296g CO2. Equipment: Adaptive cruise, park assist, illuminated Mulliner Champagne cooler, ombré wood veneer, Naim branded 1,950w audio, Tourbillon by Breitling solid gold clock, 15 colour LED mood lighting. Optional Linley hamper with china and crystal.
So in our mind, you might as well opt for the 430bhp V8 diesel version instead, and the ‘standard’ car. However, if you absolutely have to have the best of the best, and you enjoy the kudos of knowing there’s a 12-cylinder engine under the bonnet, the Mulliner spec-Bentayga is the purest and most wonderful expression of Bentley to date. n
