WELCOME

Y

ou can always find some cause for optimism, but this month, we’re feeling especially upbeat. For a start it’s spring. Blue skies and warmer weather. Next, there’s a sense that Lincolnshire is gearing up for a wonderful summer. Work on the Cathedral is completed and the scaffolding has been removed, news of county shows and summer events are beginning to trickle through to our news and events team, and of course, we’re already beginning to hear about the plans being made to celebrate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee... it’ll be an exciting summer for sure! In this edition, we’re meeting some of the county’s most talented horses and riders, we’re enjoying NGS gardens, Easter bakes and we’re putting our best foot forward with walks around the county. Much to enjoy! Our best wishes, for a great month!

“Expecting to attract more than 60,000 visitors across the two days, the ever-popular show will celebrate the very best Lincolnshire has to offer across various zones.”

LINCOLN The latest development of a £250,000 outdoor learning and play facility at Lincoln Minster Preparatory School is now complete. The facilities, developed by Timotay Playscapes, includes spaces for role play, adventurous climbing areas, running water play, tipis and woodland campsite features. The works took four months to complete, having started in October 2021, and will be available to all Preparatory School pupils, from Reception to Year 6. Maria Young, Lincoln Minster School Headmistress, said:

“New for 2022, the Atkinson Action Horses will grace the Main Ring and the Lincolnshire Kitchen will host live cookery demonstrations from top local chefs.” n

“Providing an inspiring environment for outdoor learning and play is important for us here at Lincoln Minster School. The interactive and stimulating outdoor learning environment will provide our pupils with an enriched learning experience and give them the opportunity to build their confidence and learn new sets of skills.” The latest development comes after the School was recently ranked in the top 40 UK Preparatory Schools in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2022. n See lincolnminsterschool.co.uk.

From Burgham to Burghley, Martyn Johnson is Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials’ new Event Director and promises not only a return to form but an event which continues to evolve to meet the demands of its fans... Evolution, rather than revolution, is what you can expect from this year’s Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, but don’t be deceived. Behind the scenes, there are significant changes to one of the UK’s – indeed, the world’s – most challenging and most wellrespected FEI equestrian events. For a number of years, custodianship of the event had been in the hands of Event Director, Liz Inman, but upon her retirement last year, the event sought a new head, and It’s been confirmed that the Land has found its leader in the Rover Burghley Horse Trials will form of Martyn Johnson, be held from 1st-4th September, whose first Land Rover with dressage, jumping and and until last year, he was a new cross-country course Burghley Horse Trials will competing in eventing and designed by Derek be held from 1st to 4th jumping, albeit not quite at di Grazia. September this year. Burghley levels. Martyn was also running the Burghham Horse Trials, “The recruitment process was detailed. I based in Morpeth. think there were three interviews in total,” says Martyn. “Which is understandable, “I’ve competed in all equestrian disciplines at really, because the event is a large social quite an advanced level, so first and foremost occasion, but also a world-class sporting I’ve huge respect and admiration for the fixture all in one. It’s also 60 years old and is competitors and the level of fitness, focus and one of the favourite events in the calendar for the investment of time and hard work in many people. It’s quite a responsibility, quite achieving success in the sport. Burgham was an undertaking to suddenly be at the helm of a stepping stone to Burghley, and we always something so established and so hallowed.” admired the event.”

For all the reverence though Martyn is, we reckon, a safe pair of hands. For a start he’s no stranger to event riding. Born and raised in Northumberland, he still rides frequently 18

Above: A subtle evolution of the course promises to retain some of its most iconic obstacles. Right: New course designer Derek di Grazia with Martyn Johnson, Event Director.

“My competitive riding career began properly in 2006. I became involved in Burgham in 2012 and when the event lost one of its organisers, and there was a threat of its closure, I joined the committee.” “That was in 2013. At the time the event was a national, FEI-affiliated four-star event and we developed it into an international event within three years.” “Meanwhile, I’d been enjoying attending the Burghley Horse Trials for about 15 years, even though I’d never competed here. We’d been fortunate enough to be able to run Burgham throughout Covid. In fact we were the first international event to run in 2020, putting it back by a month.” “It was in July 2021 that I first heard that Liz Inman was planning to step down.” >>

MARTYN JOHNSON

EVENT DIRECTOR, LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS

“As we get closer to the event, we’re certain that this year’s Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials will be an event that nobody will want to miss. Last year we announced that Derek di Grazia will be taking on the responsibility of designing the course. The majority of it has been finalised and it’s obvious that Derek has made a great effort to really understand the topography of the estate...” >> “We’d met a few times both at different eventing fixtures but also at meetings and seminars attended by directors of those events.” “I always had a lot of time and respect for Liz, and the idea that I could take on the show and match her dedication and commitment to it was daunting to say the least.’ “Nonetheless I’m keen, motivated, and I think that alongside a really great team we can evolve the event whilst ensuring we never lose sight of the qualities that ensure it’s so well-regarded both as a sporting fixture and as a day out for people to enjoy, too.” “I was at home, late September or at the beginning of October, when the phone call came, and there was a mixture of all different emotions, from joy right through to fear!” “It’s an unusual time to start working at the event because the last event was held in 2019 so although we’re far from starting from the very beginning, there’s been lots of scope for renegotiating with contractors or making changes. Few of those will be visibly dramatic changes, but it has given us a chance to look in great detail at each aspect of the event.” “Making a change to something dramatic like the event’s layout would be like dropping a pebble in the water; you’d see the effects rippling outwards. So we do have in mind some of the things we’d like to change for future events, but for this year’s Trials, we’re just keen that the event goes ahead and that we can use the opportunity to learn and assess what we can do in future years to improve the experience for all stakeholders; owners, competitors and visitors.”

“There are ways that the event will evolve, though. For instance, online connectivity across the event has gone from being a convenience to a necessity for things like allowing our 600 trade stands to take card payments, and for the media to ensure they can remain connected.” “Food, too, is an area that has evolved even since the last show in 2019. This year we’re making a number of improvements to our food concessions and one of the reasons is to ensure there’s good provision for vegetarian and vegan diets, for example.” “We’re also mindful of the way the media has evolved even over the past couple of years, and now streaming is much more prevalent.”

“The majority of the course has been finalised and some of the obstacles will be familiar – again the idea is evolution rather than revolution – but there are some innovations, and having walked the course with him I think it will be obvious that Derek has made a great effort to really understand the topography of the estate.” “The final walk with FEI officials and the clerk of the course will take place in April and then we’ll be making more details public, but it’s definitely going to enhance spectators’ enjoyment of that part of the competition, and continue a tradition of making the Burghley Horse Trials one of the most thrilling spectacles whilst ensuring safety for horse and rider.”

“As we get closer to the event, we’re certain that this year’s Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials will be an event that nobody will want to miss. We’re always really grateful to be working “Another change this year, Land Rover Burghley Horse with our title sponsor, Land Trials is thought to contribute over perhaps a more noticeable Rover, who will be showing £20m each year to the town’s one, will be our new off their flagship Range economy. Derek has worked hard to design Kentucky’s It’s certainly going to be an exciting event for five-star course for over a decade and also me, but I’m hoping that for our competitors created the course for the Tokyo games in and our spectators too, this year’s Burghley 2021, so we’re looking forward to everyone’s Horse Trials will make a welcome return and reaction to the course he’s created here.” will prove to be the best in its history!” n “Accordingly, we’re ensuring that every minute of the event’s competition can be live-streamed to ensure everyone, across the globe, can watch it.”

SOPHIE WELLS

PARALYMPIC & GB DRESSAGE RIDER

Sophie Wells lives in Harby, just 10 miles out of Lincoln city centre. Now 31 years of age, she has been a dressage rider since 1998 and most recently took home a team gold and an individual silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics...

“Dressage as a discipline is really nuanced. It’s about making the sport look easy, with absolute control of the horse, the correct posture for both horse and rider... a bit like a swan; calm and graceful on the surface of the lake but with control and power in the way you move under the surface of the water.”

If you’d like an interview with Sophie Wells, strike whilst the iron’s hot, because in a month or two she’ll be far too busy... and she’s not exactly kicking her heels, even now.

I have live or pre-recorded Zoom sessions with my personal trainer, and then begin training at about eight o’clock, working until about one in the afternoon.” “After that I’m teaching, training other riders – both able and para – until about six o’clock in the evening.” Over Christmas and into the New Year Sophie is afforded a little time to relax, but by the New Year, training begins in earnest. Selection trials for international fixtures take place from March until the second week in July in which chosen competitors are confirmed by British Dressage. “Training really gets going from January,” says Sophie. “That’s when condition becomes increasingly important so the focus moves from maintaining general fitness to concentrating on core strength and balance as well as co-ordination.”

“The bond you have with the horse is incredibly important. The empathy that the animals have generally is significant, and in a national or international competition, nerves are a sign that you’re still passionate about the way you perform, but you can easily transmit those nerves to the horse.”

BRANSBY HORSES

LINCOLNSHIRE’S EQUINE CHARITY

“Anyone who works with animals will tell you that the low points can be heartbreaking, but the happy moments make it all worthwhile, and happiness is something we want to provide for our visitors, as well as our animals...” It’s one of the largest equine charities in the UK, and its work is vital to ensure good outcomes for the animals in its care. Storm Eunice meant that Bransby Horses had to close to visitors; the 600-acre site is quite exposed, and the wind was blasting through the site. Over the past couple of years, too, visitor numbers have necessarily been curtailed, but with the winds easing and spring coming along, the site is very much ready to welcome visitors back.

“Anyone who works with animals will tell you that the low points can be heartbreaking, but the happy moments make it all worthwhile, and happiness is something we want to provide for our visitors, as well as the animals on the site.” “In addition to looking after the horses in our care, we’re also able to provide some lovely walks in the fresh air and the chance to say hello to our residents, which is not only lovely for local people, it’s nice for the horses themselves, most of whom love to say hello to visitors. We’re now able to welcome visitors back every Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm, and seven days a week during the school holidays. As well as a brand new play park, there’s a monthly trail for children to enjoy and countryside walks too.”

So are its residents; some 331 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Some arrive at Bransby Horses through neglect or poor conditions, as the charity works with other rescue and welfare organisations including the Blue Cross, RSPCA and The Donkey Sanctuary, but others arrive as a result of owners approaching the charity directly. Bransby Horses has a policy of non-judgemental Visitors are welcome to enjoy a walk around Bransby Horses and support and advice for people see their horses in their paddocks. predominantly within a two-hour There’s a tack shop, café and a gift shop too, making it radius of the charity but more realisa great day out for tically, nationally. the family!

Bransby Rescue Horses

A national report states that there are about 2,350 horses which require rehoming each year, and if there’s one fact of which anyone who has ever kept horses is acutely aware it’s the sheer expense of looking after horses, and of providing veterinary care when needed. “We reckon the daily cost for each resident is about £30,” says Maria Thompson, who shows us around the site. “Ensuring that we continue to provide care for our residents isn’t just a matter of being willing to provide welfare, it’s about being able to raise the £6m it costs us each year to ensure the charity is viable, so we’re glad to be able to welcome back visitors.” 24

“We’re helped enormously by our supporters and by those who take a keen interest in becoming a member or sponsoring one of our nine Sponsorship Stars. We’re also really grateful to our volunteers who help us by coming along and rolling up their sleeves.”

“We also need to acknowledge the help of our farriers, dentists and vets we use, who provide first class care for horses in need. When we take on a new resident we’ve strict quarantine procedures and we complete full medical assessments. From that point teeth, feet and general health are all checked, providing the basic care every equine needs, to ensure that they’re as healthy as possible as they begin a new life at Bransby Horses. Some horses remain with us, others are fostered and live elsewhere, but we ensure a better life for all of the animals which come under our care.” n

Helping Lincolnshire’s working horses and happy hackers to put their best foot forward for over ten years now, farrier Garath Schofield Dip.WCF is based near Sleaford, but works right across the county... “I enjoying being out early,” says Garath Schofield. Because you need light, you’re a bit limited to when you can work, and clients might not be inclined to wake us as early as me, but the sooner I can start work the better.” “I try not to work at the weekend because I’ve a couple of young children, but often at the weekend you can find me at the forge either working on a set of shoes or just making sure it’s tidy. It’s a really great place to be!”

Burghley Horse Trials

It’s been confirmed that Stamford’s Burghley Horse Trials will be held from 1st-4th September, with dressage, jumping and a new cross-country course designed by Derek di Grazia.

In years gone by, there would be a farrier in pretty much every Lincolnshire village, servicing the needs of local horses. Of course, with the advent of motor vehicles and a reduction in the number of working horses, that’s no longer the case. Instead, there are just over 2,900 farriers in the UK, like Garath, and typically they’re now fully mobile. Garath’s van is customdesigned to incorporate his LPG-fuelled forge which doesn’t even need to be taken out of the vehicle. The temperature reaches over 1,000°c but despite the convenience of being able to simply turn off and on the flame with a simple flick of switch, Garath says he still prefers the traditional smell and dry heat generated by the coke-fuelled fire in his rural forge near Ruskington. 26

“Like most farriers, I look at the quality of machine-made shoes these days and I think they’re really good... cost effective and well made. They’ll suffice for almost all horses, and four shoes can be fitted in about an hour and a half, keeping costs down for the client.” “But there are two other options for specialist fittings. Firstly, I can weld in an insert for a machine-made shoe, or I can fabricate a completely bespoke, custom shoe. Typically hand-made shoes are for correcting bad feet though or for creating nail holes in different positions.” “For the National Shire Horse Show at Newark which takes place in a few weeks, I’ve been producing bespoke shoes which are bevelled and chamfered to suit each horse and to help them present them at their best.”

“At some appointments there’s a single horse to shoe, at others, there are several. I try to stay within a 15 mile radius from Monday to Wednesday. I’m based a little further on Thursday and at an equestrian centre on Friday.” “This morning, for example, I’ve visited three clients with a single horse each, then another with three horses and finally a stable near Sleaford with five horses to be shod. I’ve had a colleague helping me, which is essential because it’s gruelling work. Horses weigh between 200kg (for a small pony) and 850kg (for a shire horse), and many farriers retire early, some in their 40s.” “At 33 years of age I’m conscious to pace myself and to make sure I’m working safely. Just a single jerk or flinch from the movement of a horse when you’re doubled over can result in an injury.”

GARATH SCHOFIELD

LINCOLNSHIRE FARRIER & BLACKSMITH

“The days of clients having a winter hunter that’s turned out for summer and an eventing horse for the summer months has now fallen out of fashion. Instead, people have a single horse all year, and so making a demand on the animal for hunting, hacking and eventing really does necessitate the best possible care I can provide.” “It’s still a phenomenally enjoyable job. I’ve wanted to work with horses since I was young and I’ve never lost respect for them. Clients trust me implicitly to care not only for their horses, but for their safety, too, when they’re riding. It’s a huge responsibility but a real pleasure, too, the only downside is the fact that my job leaves me too busy to ride!” n Garath Schofield is based near Ruskington, call 0780 3006010 or see www.yourlocalfarrier.co.uk.

UK FARRIERS: The State of the Profession... n There are currently more than 2,900 farriers in the UK registered with the Worshipful Company of Farriers, the trade body which represents the profession. n The WCF was formed in the City of London in March 1356 (in the 30th year of the reign of Edward III) when the city’s mayor, Henry Pykard, wanted to crackdown on the city’s ‘bad’ farriers and deal with the damage they were causing to animals. Pykard appointed two wardens to oversee the profession. n In 1975 the first Farriers Registration Act passed as law requiring all those in the profession to be registered with the Worshipful Company of Farriers. n Currently the WCF oversees training of farriers. There are 110 people across the UK currently engaged in training, 60 of which are engaged in a new qualification – the Farrier Standard – which will replace the old qualification. n It’s thought that fewer than 5% of UK farriers are women. n The qualification follows a four year apprenticeship and will yield letters after a farrier’s name; Dip WCF. After achieving a diploma, farriers can further their education by becoming an Associate and finally a Fellow of the WCF. n There are three colleges offering formal training; Myerscough College (Lancs), Warwickshire College and Herefordshire and Ludlow College.

MARKET RASEN RACECOURSE

Lincolnshire’s Market Rasen Racecourse is one of The Jockey Club’s most unique courses out of the 15 it owns and manages across the UK. The national hunt course is one and a quarter miles long and attracts 100,000 spectators each year... “It’s a really unique course,” says Joe Callan. OLLY WILLIAMS

RACEHORSE TRAINER

A jockey turned trainer, Olly Williams and his wife Lynsey train both National Hunt and Flat racehorses from their stables in the Lincolnshire Wolds... “It’s a young man’s game!” says Olly Williams, on his previous career as a jockey. ‘How old are you, then?’ I asked. “37,” he replied. And given that I’m 42 years old, that puts me firmly in that category, too... ouch! But I’ll bet Olly is in better shape than me. With a dozen horses on site, he and Lynsey first advise owners on the purchase of a racehorse, or purchase one for them, before getting each one into peak condition in terms of diet, discipline and training. “There are fewer than 1,000 trainers in the country, with between two and 250 horses

in their yards, and once in peak condition, an owner can secure a jockey, usually by way of an agency, or employ their own.” “Most horses are either independently owned or owned in small partnerships of up to about 10 people.”

Spilsby’s horse rescue charity was founded in 1988 by Keith and Ruth Sanders

“Flat racing horses typically come to us at two years old, and a filly is around 400450kg in weight, broken in for their first race at a fixture like Doncaster. “Whilst Flat Horses can race until about 10 years of age, National Hunt Horses are about 17hh tall and weigh up to 650kg, but tend to retire a couple of years earlier.” “I decided when we established the yard six years ago that we didn’t want to go much larger than a dozen horses. It enables us to remain close to Learning our horses, look after our owners and enjoy the very best horses in our care.”

Spilsby’s Northcote Heavy Horse Centre was the original idea of Keith & Ruth Sanders in 1988 and today, it’s managed by Terena Bolam and a really hard-working team who look after around 15 horses and a few sundry animals.

The centre is a non-profit making organisation funded entirely through visitor donations with a volunteer manager and deputy, plus volunteer friends taking care of their animals. “Since 1989 we have been promoting animal welfare in an educational setting, allowing visitors the unique chance to meet the animals and have a very hands on learning experience,” says Terena. “Many of our resident animals have been turned down by other charities so we step in and offer them a home for the rest of their life.” “We provide our animals with the respect, dignity and love we know they deserve. We are a small but dedicated animal welfare charity which offer a unique chance for guests to see the work we do, meet our animals, even help care for them.” Above: Olly Williams trained Game of War, who recently finished third in Wetherby.

THE VILLAGE: TEALBY & WALESBY

Taking time out in

TEALBY

It’s a struggle to suggest a village with more community spirit than Tealby. Equidistant to Market Rasen, Wragby, Caistor and Louth, it’s one of the prettiest and most sought-after villages in Lincolnshire, with a population determined to work together for mutual benefit... THE VILLAGE: TEALBY AND WALESBY

“About three years ago the village shop was reinvented. At one point it was facing closure, but Tealby’s not the sort of village to accept the loss of its shop...” BACK IN 1976, Britain saw the first Inter City 125 high speed train come enter service, British car company Rover launch the SD1 and the first commercial flight for Concorde. It wasn’t all about speed, though. In little Tealby, located equidistant between Market Rasen, Louth, Caistor and Wragby, John Hedley-Lewis officially opened the Viking Way, a 147 mile route of Viking thoroughfare which would eventually stretch from Barton upon Humber right down to Rutland Water, a new reservoir which had opened a year before, following five years of construction. A walk along the Viking Way is still a leisurely way to enjoy rambling and cycling, and in addition to the obvious health benefits that brings, you’ll also benefit from being able to spend a bit of time in one of Lincolnshire’s most desirable villages. With a population of about 500 people and around 260 homes, properties in the village command a premium when they come to the market. That’s because Tealby has some of the prettiest scenery in the county and because of its very strong sense of community. At one time there were several mills in the village – three corn mills, two paper mills, and a leather mill. Today, however, what Tealby lacks in mills it more than makes up for in community spirit. “My wife Ginny and I came to the village seven years ago, having always admired the place,” says Richard Askam. Richard is on the committee for both Tealby’s village shop and its village hall. “About three years ago the village shop was reinvented. At one point it was facing closure, but Tealby’s not the sort of village to accept the loss of its shop, so instead, the community reinvented it.” Today, wherever possible the shop supports other businesses and works with them to Left: Walking routes, with a pub to stop off at along the way. Also seen here, the village hall.

ensure that profit is ploughed back into the village.” “We all try to work together. For instance, the shop has to have the usual essentials – tea, coffee, milk and bread – but it also provides the opportunity for the village’s baker, Rebecca Blackwood, to sell her own sourdough bread in the village, without having to have a dedicated shop. There’s a local confectioner called Sarah Brown, too, who provides ready to bake croissants and pastries for a weekend breakfast treat. And we sell Tealby Gin, produced for us locally!” “That means we can serve all of the locals with their essentials, but also champion local produce like Sturton venison and smoked salmon from Grimsby. We reckon that most of our products come from a maximum radius of about 40 miles.” “The shop sells takeaway coffees, with an agreement to leave The Vintage Tea Room opposite to provide seating, afternoon teas and cakes. The shop sells ice creams to children using the playground, too, and for every cone sold, it donates 50p to the Village Hall. We try to keep funds in the village and we try to utilise the skills we have in our community.” For instance, we’ve a really good graphic designer in the village, Adam Lee, who has created signage for the shop and village hall, as well as designing the village website and producing its quarterly magazine.” “He’s really talented and gives the whole village a cohesive look, almost like its own brand.” “Recently we’ve refurbished the playing field to produce a really good children’s play area and field, reinstating the zip wire. We’ve also been able to use the funds we’ve raised to refurbish the village hall. It’s 90 years old in 2023, so in preparation for its anniversary

we’ve been able to redecorate it, replace the heating system and refurbish its floor.” The village hall was donated to the village by the Tennyson D’Eyncourt family, who wanted to create a memorial to their two sons who gave their lives in the First World War. Meanwhile, the village’s thatched pub restaurant, The King’s Head, dates back to 1367 and has recently been taken over by Jayne and David Robinson. Due to close for a couple of days as Pride goes to press, it’ll reopen with a fresh look and a menu of quality pub restaurant favourites. With whitewashed walls, a thatched roof and a pretty beer garden, it’s the perfect place to take in the beauty of Tealby. And if you’re keen to work up an appetite beforehand, The Rambler’s Church may be in Walesby – the adjacent village – but it’s worth the trip to enjoy the place, which is also known as All Saint’s Church. Carrying a Grade I listing and dating back to the 12th century, it’s a sight to behold, and its position overlooking panoramic vistas of undulating Wolds countryside is a true treat... much like a visit to Tealby! n Left: Tealby’s All Saints’ Church. DINING OUT AT THE DOWER HOUSE

DINING at the DOWER HOUSE Tucked away in a leafy enclave of Woodhall Spa is The Dower House Hotel. This month the place is undergoing not one, but two refurbishments. Inside, the place is receiving a bit of a redesign, whilst outdoors, there’s new leaves and greenery in the verdant grounds, courtesy of Mother Nature... Words & Images Rob Davis.

DINING OUT AT THE DOWER HOUSE, WOODHALL SPA

SPRINGTIME, and new life is unfolding everywhere... the grounds of Woodhall Spa’s Dower House were looking a bit glum during our January visit, but by the time you read this, they’ll be a verdant joy, with spring bulbs and a lush-looking setting for this very pretty hotel, hidden away at the end of Manor Estate in Woodhall Spa. No stranger to new life is Jed Stout. Exactly a year ago he and his new wife welcomed into the world their first child, Luna. And so, this time of year will hold particular joy as they celebrate her first birthday. Elsewhere, there’s new growth on trees, new lambs are gambolling in fields and everywhere there’s the general sense that a fresh new season is unfolding, much to everyone’s joy. It’s particularly pertinent this year as we all hope that the beginning of spring will also coincide with the end of Covid, not to mention with outdoor events and the chance to enjoy days out both resuming, too, after a couple of rather constrained years. So if you’re venturing out this spring to enjoy fresh air, blue skies, and – if you dare to dream – warmer temperatures, you’ll be looking for a decent dining out recommendation... and The Dower House fits the bill perfectly. 48

As well as Mother Nature’s handiwork outdoors, giving the garden a much-deserved pick-me-up, you can also enjoy the results of a makeover inside the hotel, with redecoration, recarpeting and new furniture due to be completed as Pride goes to press. What was once the lounge and reception is now a pretty dining room with views over the garden. Previously the dining room was located in what is now exclusively a huge function room, and for dining, that space was a little large and impersonal. The newer dining room has about 20 dining covers and is smart, cosy and intimate, more suited to the kind of enjoyable dining you’d expect in a boutique hotel. There’s a private dining room too, for up to 12 people, and Harry’s Bar with its dedicated menu of more relaxed favourites too.

Lincs Pride APRIL 237.qxp 02/03/2022 10:14 Page 49

Alongside new look interiors and a new dining room is a brand new à la carte menu courtesy of Jed and his team which runs alongside the bar menu. And it’s a beaut. There are six starters, 13 main courses and six puddings including a trio of ice creams or sorbets and a cheese board option. Suppliers to the hotel include Lincolnshire butcher Mel Ward, Woodhall Spa’s Graham Fidling who provides Lincolnshire sausages and pies, as well as fish merchants Cooks & Lucas. More often than not, fish is landed in Grimsby at four o’clock in the morning and is in the pan in time for evening service, meaning diners benefit from only the freshest fish, treated as respectfully as all of Jed’s other ingredients. Eggs are from Lincolnshire’s Fairburns, ice creams are from fourth-generation ice

cream makers Dennetts, based in Spilsby, and fruit & veg, naturally, is from the fields of Lincolnshire wherever practical Presentation of dishes is something in which Jed takes great pride. Our visit coincided with the signing-off of The Dower House’s new spring menus and these included our two starter dishes of mushroom pâté and treacle-cured salmon, both of which were beautifully embellished and delicious. Main course options include our featured roasted venison loin with a carrot and swede purée buttered kale, crushed new potatoes and a Madeira reduction. A second main course was duo of duck, which comprised a beautifully textured breast and a lovely duck leg croquette. Embarrassingly, as Jed arrived with the desserts to photograph, he completely caught

Duo of duck, with breast and hoisin duck sauce, duck-leg croquettes and egg noodle stir-fry £16. Slow roasted pork belly, with sage dauphinoise, caramelised apple puree, baked apple and jus £15. Desserts me in the act of getting stuck into the latter. I make no apologies, for it was absolutely delicious... although my enthusiastic gluttony was a bit undignified to say the least. If, however, I made a bit of a piggy of myself over the main courses, worse was yet to come, for Jed’s chocolate tart arrived and proved to be pretty much the most chocolate-ey treat you’ll ever experience.

By far the most delicious tart I’ve ever had, it was also all the better for being juxtaposed by a deliciously tangy sorbet courtesy of Robin Dennet of Spilsby; the camera was barely down before I was polishing that off too. As summer comes along, though, you might also want to give consideration to Jed’s deconstructed assiette of strawberries, comprising a panna cotta, meringue and a macaroon. A final mention, too, for The Dower House’s excellent provision of a traditional tiered afternoon tea, and for its Easter Sunday Lunch at £32/person. With a new look, a new menu and new life all around, The Dower House is a distinct recommendation. This is local spring dining at its very best indeed! n

DINING OUT AT THE BUSTARD INN

DINING OUT IN

SPRING The Bustard Inn’s Josh Singleton has revealed their new spring menus which debut as Pride goes to press. This month we provide a reminder of why our readers named the pub restaurant their Lincolnshire Pride Restaurant of the Year for 2021... Words: Rob Davis.

WITH SPRING comes warmer weather, blue skies and of course, a wealth of seasonal ingredients with which Lincolnshire’s best chefs can create their new menus. Josh Singleton has been especially busy recently. The Head Chef at The Bustard Inn leads an assiduous kitchen team, dedicated to providing exactly what the restaurant’s customers are looking for from dining this season. Our readers clearly concur, as they voted The Bustard Inn Lincolnshire’s Restaurant of the Year for 2021 back in January. Just recently we visited the pub restaurant at South Rauceby near Sleaford where the front of house team were introduced to the new menus, to ensure they’re familiar with each one when diners ask questions about how they taste or how they’re presented. 52

Leek and potato.

The menu tasting also afforded the chance to photograph each dish to allow us to show off the new menu to our readers as well. Created as a pub for thirsty workers on the Rauceby Estate, The Bustard Inn was fully renovated back in 2007 and came under the ownership of Lesley and Julian Lonsdale in 2018, with Josh joining the team following

his 2015 appearance on BBC’s Masterchef The Professionals in which he reached the quarter finals. Josh specialises in creating stunning looking dishes with robust flavours and great imagination invested in each one. The Bustard Inn’s menus comprise five starter courses, five main course options and four desserts plus ice cream and cheese options.

EASTER BAKES WITH TIFFIN

SHANNON’S TREATS for

EASTER If you can’t enjoy delicious treats at Easter, when can you enjoy them? This month Heckington based Shannon Riglin of Tiffin & Co Bakehouse presents her stunning seasonal cakes and treat boxes which can be delivered anywhere in the UK... Words & Images: Rob Davis.

IF YOU CAN’T ENJOY something sweet, delicious and chocolatey during Easter, when can you? When I bake, though, my efforts are always a little lacking in respect of their presentation. The same definitely can’t be said of Shannon’s handiwork. Her bakes not only taste terrific, they look sensational. Baking has always been a source of great pleasure for Shannon. But a year ago, and having completed a Business Studies and Management degree with the Open University then a masters degree at The University of Lincoln, Heckington-based Shannon wanted to start her own business and reasoned that if her family and friends were always keen for her to make for them, the public would be, too. Founding Tiffin & Co Bakehouse, Shannon has created the branding, designed her website, set up in a unit to afford herself the space she needs to work, and created a range of brilliant bakes. “Just about everyone I know loves chocolate or sweet things,” says Shannon. “They’re a treat around Easter and so I wanted to create a special range to put a seasonal twist on some of the most popular products I make throughout the year.” Shannon’s ranges include cakes, cheesecakes,

cookie dough slices, brownies and blondies. Understandably, Shannon is already gearing up for a really busy Easter, with her products on sale in a number of retail outlets across Lincolnshire, or for delivery by courier. “My ranges are available at all six of Gary Simpson’s shops in Lincoln, Sleaford and Stamford, as well as Baytree Garden Centre, Oldrids Grantham, Skylark Garden Centre in March and Baytree Hilgay, but most

Wine of the Month

Bottega Gianduia Chocolate Liqueur A must for all chocolate lovers, this Gianduia cream chocolate liqueur combines hazelnut cream and premium grappa spirit to produce a smooth luxurious drink...

Jim Barry McRae Wood Shiraz 2014, Clare Valley £34.99 / 75cl / 14% ABV

Bottega Gianduia is a chocolate and hazelnut flavoured liqueur created using grappa, Italy’s native style of pomace brandy. The sweet and creamy taste is reminiscent of gianduia, a traditional chocolate and hazelnut spread originating in Piedmont. It is excellent served chilled as an after-dinner drink and makes a delicious cocktail ingredient, but you can also slather it over very good ice cream or a rich chocolate pudding. n

The late Jim Barry was a godfather of Australian wines. His estate is now in the hands of his grandson, Tom, and was named Winery of the Year 2020 by Australia’s leading wine critic, James Halliday. This wine is made from grapes declassified from one of Jim’s finest vineyards, The Armagh, where bottles usually command over £100. This has been the choice of some of the most prestigious Michelin-star restaurants since the first vintage. It has aromas of red and black fruits and flavours of dark berries, with savoury spice. An excellent choice for intensely-flavoured spring lamb dishes. Available from majestic.co.uk. n

£15.80 / 50cl / 17% ABV, See www.drinkfinder.co.uk.

The Wine Cellar AS IT’S EASTER, WE THOUGHT WE’D GO LOCO FOR COCOA WITH A SELECTION OF CHOCOLATE-THEMED TIPPLES TO COMPLEMENT YOUR EASTER EGGS OR PROVIDE A TREAT!

RAISING THE BAR: THREE WINES FOR WHITE, MILK AND DARK CHOCOLATE... 1. With white chocolate, try this Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Grunlack Spätlese. Outstanding bouquet with white peach, fresh pineapple, green apple, nettle and sorrel, £42 / 75cl / 8.50% ABV.

2. With milk chocolate, we recommend this Premier Cru example of Bouchard Beaune du Château Rouge. Perfumed and harmonious with soft red fruit flavours, well integrated oak with great potential for laying it down, £32.99 / 75cl / 13.50% ABV. 3. Yalumba is a perfect match for dark chocolate, a signature Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz. A brooding, serious and dark red wine of immense power and great concentration, £33.99 / 75cl / 14.50% ABV.

Totally topical, with no alcohol... Caleño Dark & Spicy is a non-alcoholic spirit inspired by Colombia and distilled with joy. A rich blend of pineapple, coconut, ginger, black cardamom, vanilla, kola nut & lime. Low calories, and sugar, allergen, sweetener and gluten-free, suitable for vegetarians. Six ingredients are joyfully distilled, harnessing complex tropical, dark and spicy flavours from within. A distilled non-alcoholic spirit inspired by sundrenched beaches £16 / 50cl / 0% ABV.

Properties in Harmston are terrifically desirable, so this month we’re delighted to introduce you to the impressive Lindum House, a stunning five bedroom family home of stone construction, set out over three floors in the sought-after cliff edge village just outside Lincoln City Centre. Currently on the market with Savills Estate Agency, this beautiful property would make the most perfect family home... indeed it has been just that for Andy & Liz Young for the last 18 years. Prior to purchasing Lindum House, they had always moved at regular intervals and their previous home was also in the village, just a short distance away. But the character of Lindum House with its Main: Lindum House is arranged over three floors with three reception rooms and five bedrooms, including two with en suites.

natural limestone walls and its location opposite the church always attracted them. Andy is a civil and structural engineer by profession and always had an ambition to build his own property, but felt that Lindum House was the blank canvas internally, and so ideal as a suitable project. Previously city dwellers from Coventry the couple moved to Lincolnshire for work and village life. Andy and Liz raised their children here and being able to walk out of the front door to their daughter’s wedding at the church opposite in 2014 was a very special occasion for the family. During their ownership of the property the couple have made many changes to the property, which although not listed, is recorded as a ‘building of note’ in the local conservation plan.

“Since moving in we have added an extension to the front which accommodates an entrance hall and office on the ground floor and an en-suite bedroom upstairs,” says Andy. “We also added a double garage to the side of the house, both projects being built from local limestone and constructed by a stonemason from the village.” “Internally everything has changed. We moved the kitchen to where the dining room was, relocated the dining room and installed a lovely log burner into the spectacular double height lounge.” The kitchen benefits from oak cabinets, Indian granite worktops and Neff appliances throughout to include induction hob, two ovens, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher. One of the most spectacular rooms in the property, though, is the sitting room. >> 67

PROPERTY

>> “It always receives a ‘wow’ when visitors to the property see it for the first time,” says Andy. “It’s a double height room, with impressive twisted brick chimney which houses a log burner and the proportions of the room give it a very grand feel. The dining room also has unusually high ceilings and tall windows and is big enough to allow me the opportunity to own a dining table that converts to a snooker and pool table.” The property’s interior design is taken charge of by Liz who does all of the painting herself. Andy and Liz have also invested time creating a wonderful outside space. When they took ownership, the garden was predominantly laid to lawn with a few trees but with the expertise of local landscape architect Matthew Allen of APT Studios they have created a garden that provides colour all year round and has various seating areas for entertaining including a paved barbecue terrace. The property is approached by a gravel driveway providing off-road parking for several vehicles and giving access to the double garage with storage room above. “Although it will be a huge sadness to leave our beautiful home, one that has so many happy family memories, we have decided to move to the North Norfolk Coast and fulfil our original dream of building our own house.” n 68

LOCAL NGS GARDENS

English Country

GARDENS This month the NGS will publish its Yellow Book, the gardener’s bible for those seeking a great day out and inspiration for their own plot. Here, Vicky Flynn tells us why the NGS is a great organisation for charities, as well as the public... Main Image: Goltho Gardens, Wragby.

86

Lincs Pride APRIL 237.qxp 01/03/2022 13:39 Page 87

Vicky Flynn is the National PR manager for the NGS and says: “The National Garden Scheme doesn’t just open beautiful gardens for charity – we are passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of gardens too. We also support charities doing amazing work in gardens and health and grant bursaries to help community gardening projects.”

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? If the answer is ‘very well, thank you!’ then perhaps you should consider opening our beautifully curated gardens for visitors during the NGS season. Founded in 1927, the charity is a really neat way for keen gardeners to show off their handiwork, for visitors to get lots of ideas and inspiration for their own gardens, and it’s a super way for charities to earn some much-needed post-Covid funds. When it first opened, the NGS comprised of a still impressive 690 open garden events, raising £8,100. In 2020 though, 3,700 gardens were due to open, and the charity raises an average of £3m a year. In total, it has donated £63m to nursing and health charities.

Above: Debbie Hollingworth of Goltho Gardens. Top: Easton Walled Gardens near Grantham.

Over the page we’ve picked 12 of our favourite local gardens to visit over the next couple of months. Not only will you enjoy a leisurely stroll around some of the area’s most beautifully curated gardens, you’ll also help raise money for charity and at pretty much all of the gardens, you’ll be able to enjoy cream teas and purchase a plant or two from the gardens’ stalls to take home. >> 87

LINCOLNSHIRE TREE SERVICES

Working with Nature Spring cleaning your home...? Good show! But what about your garden? Successful tree management more often than not doesn’t mean chopping them down, but rather, helping them to flourish. A good tree surgeon works with nature to improve the look and safety of your garden, as we discover this month… the middle of a large area where our bigger machinery can operate. Likewise we can operate on slopes and banks and in other spaces that it’s neither safe nor practical for people who aren’t experts to work.”

“It’s a misconception that persists,” says Louise Allenby. “Some people think that we’re chainsaw-happy and that we’re just concerned with removing trees and shrubs.” “Quite the opposite. Where possible we’ll preserve, nurture and encourage new growth. We like to work with nature, not against it. In our armoury are techniques like selective pruning, crown reduction (reducing the height or spread of a tree, sometimes to reduce the weight of its branches) and pollarding (managing the height to which you’ll allow a tree to grow), all of which are techniques designed to prevent the need to actually remove a tree.”

“We also offer an additional service to write tree surveys and reports plus liaise with local authorities on issues like conservation area status and Tree Protection Orders. We ensure we comply with any conditions of tree management. And of course we’re fully insured and trained, including ongoing training with our new and existing equipment.” “We’ve nine friendly experts who typically work in multiple teams according to how large the job is, which means we’re costeffective for any scale of work, and we’re tidy, too, with chippers, shredders and blowers to leave your site completely clean and tidy after use.”

“Of course, sometimes it’s not possible to leave a tree in situ – when it’s in a dangerous location or when it’s diseased, for example – in which case its safe and methodical removal is necessary.” “We’ve been in business since 2000, and over half of our work is for domestic customers. About a quarter of our work is for commercial and municipal clients and then another quarter is for farmers, country estates and equestrian premises.” “So we’re sufficiently well-trained – and we have the big equipment necessary from our new Merlo telehandler for mechanical tree removal to a variety of cherry pickers to aid our extremely talented tree climbers – these help conduct complex work or to manage

very large trees at height - but we’re still very much a company which works with householders who have smaller problem trees, hedges or shrubs that need to be managed.” “From once a year hedge management to the management or removal of a big tree in your garden to a one-off site clearance if you’ve an area or building plot which needs to be reinstated, we can handle any job whether it’s in a smaller garden or an awkward space with less accessibility, or in

“We can remove green waste from work sites, and we can chop up felled trees to provide logs too, so you can use your own timber to stay warm in the winter.” “Don, our estimator, is a huge source of expertise and knowledge. Our quotations are free, our advice is based on working with nature, and spring is the ideal time to book in a no-obligation appointment to decide what work – if any – is necessary to keep your garden, paddock or plot looking good and to ensure it remains safe.” n

LINCOLNSHIRE WALKS

n A Ramble Around Riseholme... Distance: 7 miles / 11.2 km. Description: A pleasant walk with just one short ascent. Mostly field paths and tracks with some short stretches of road, plus two crossings of the A15. How to Get There: Start at St Mary’ s Church, Riseholme College, Lincoln, LN2 2LF, SK984757.

From the church walk south along the road with Riseholme Lake and the remains of a medieval village on your right, stop to read the information board on the corner. At the T junction turn right into Riseholme Lane, Riseholme Lake and now Riseholme Hall are on your right (A). The medieval village and monastic grange, visible as bumps in the ground to your right, were established before the late 11th century and enlarged in the late 12th century. The village was first depopulated in the 14th century, as a result of the Black Death, and continued to decline through the 15th and 16th centuries until 1602 when only one house remained standing. Riseholme Hall is an early 18th-century grade II listed country house. From about 1840 until 1887, it served as the official residence for the Bishop of Lincoln. Continue to the A15 and with care cross over. Turn left and follow the meandering path between the trees. Cross the first bridleway and continue on the path, keeping an old quarry on your right (B). Soon after, take the next track on the right, this is the old coach road to Burton that you follow, eventually emerging at a road. Turn right and follow the pavement to the traffic lights, where you turn left into Main Street. Your downward route marks a descent of the Lincoln Edge, a major escarpment that 94

runs for over 50 miles from the Leicestershire border near Grantham to the Humber Estuary, Turn right into Manor Lane and follow it to the end where, with views of the manor house on the left (C), you keep to the right of Beech House, to go through a gate onto a bridleway. Follow the bridleway through three fields and associated gates with the hedge on your left. The bridleway then moves to the other side of the hedge in the fourth field (D), where you continue, hedge right, veering left to another gate and final field. Follow the path diagonally left to emerge onto Fen Lane in South Carlton. Go right, and continue along

School Lane to the T junction at the end. Turn right and walk along the road. This is the halfway point of the walk and the Church of St John the Baptist which is on your left is a good place to take a break. Continue along the road and after passing a pond on your right, look left for a stile. Climb this, and the following one, then go half-left to a wooden gate giving access to a small plantation. Exit via a stile in the far corner, then climb ahead, hedge left, for a short distance to reach a stile (E). Once over, climb the hill diagonally left (the Lincolnshire Edge again) aiming for a telegraph pole on the skyline where a stile gives access to the road. Cross over to the surfaced driveway immediately opposite, signposted to

Riseholme Hall.

Grange-de-Lings. Follow this, going right, then left, eventually emerging onto the A15. Cross the road with care, turn left, and walk along the pavement for a few yards to a right hand turn, again signed Grange-de-Lings. Follow the road for about a quarter of a mile and then the bridleway to the right (F). Follow this track past a farm and a wood on the left and then head out straight over the field. On the far side, veer right, through a wooded area (at the time of writing, the bridleway sign was misaligned, directing the walker straight ahead), cross a footbridge then walk, hedge left (ignoring another

misaligned sign) to reach the Roman-period barrow in the field to the right (G). Partial excavation of the mound in 1952 showed that it was constructed in the late first century AD on the site of a cremation. Evidence of burning, fragments of human bone and vessels of pottery and glass were found in a shallow trench in the old ground surface. A secondary burial of the same period, consisting of a human cremation in a pottery vessel covered by a stone slab, was found near the surface of the mound in 1935.

Continue ahead, crossing a track and entering woodland, then go through a bridleway gate into a grassy field. Head straight across the field and through another gate to emerge onto the road near St Marys Church and your parking spot. St Mary’s Church is sited in the grounds of Riseholme Hall and was built by Bishop John Kaye (1783-1853). He was the first Bishop to reside in Riseholme Hall and he had this church built at his own expense; it was consecrated on 7th August 1851. n Lincoln Rambler’s Group, 01522 535399. 95

LINCOLNSHIRE WALKS

n Looking Around Louth... Distance: 4 miles / 6.4 km. Description: An easy walk from the town of Louth, into the Lincolnshire Wolds. Some easy climbs and a busy crossing of the A16 (Louth bypass). How to Get There: St. James Church, Louth, LN11 9YE or TF326873.

Start at St. James Church and walk into Westgate. The church is mainly 15th century, replacing earlier 12th and 13th century structures, with the spire being completed in 1515. At the end of Westgate, enter Westgate fields and follow the path that runs its length. Leaving Westgate fields at the far end, turn right and follow the road passing the old Mill House. You can see the dried-up mill leat down to your right. It was once a waterpowered corn mill, but ceased operations after the disastrous Louth Flood of 1920. Cross the footbridge and look down to see where the mill lead now diverts to join Hallington Beck. Continuing to the car park at Dog Kennel Farm, follow the field-edge path initially left, then right, boundary right, climbing slightly then descending to a junction of paths and tracks; here, you have a choice (A). For the shorter walk, turn left and walk, hedge right, to a gate. Beyond, go half-right to reach a lane. Cross, and walk ahead down the field, keeping the cottage to your right. Do not follow the driveway to the property. Cross a footbridge and continue to climb an old railway embankment (more of that later), then beyond a plantation you reach a causeway spanning two lakes. It’s always worth pausing here to see what wildlife is around. On the far side, climb the bank and beyond the gate, turn left (D). The longer route joins here. For the longer walk, from (A), take the signed path ahead, following the field edge and climbing to reach a cross-track. Go ahead across the next field (fine views from here) to reach a stile on the far side that gives access to a lane (B). Go left, walking downhill and keeping right at a junction, then right again to a further junction with Home

farm on the left. Just beyond the farm drive, there is a permissive path on the left. Go through the gate and walk to the top far corner of this old orchard. Go through the field gate ahead into a paddock, then walk to the top left corner. Here, another field gate gives access to a grassy strip going left between paddocks, towards stables. On reaching them, go right, through a gate into what’s usually an extremely muddy field. Follow the left boundary to a stile in the top corner of the field. Once over, you are standing on the track bed of the Louth to Bardney railway, with Hallington station to your right (C). Beyond the track bed, head out across the, going through a gate on the far boundary. Now go half-left, crossing uneven ground (there are extensive earthworks in this field, but it is not marked as the site of a medieval village) to reach a footbridge. Cross, and climb to a gate and the field edge beyond. Walk left alongside the field – avoid following the lower path, eventually reaching a path junction (D). The shorter route joins here.

Continue following the field edge for a short distance, then at a finger post, go left, crossing the railway again, then following a wooded path, then a field edge, to reach a water-management structure. This is the Louth flood alleviation scheme. It cost £6.5m and took 2 years to complete, opening in 2017 and protecting the town from the floods that happened periodically. Follow the path alongside the fence to reach the road and go right, under the bypass, then enter Hubbard’s Hills on the left (E). The path eventually reaches the road by the Old Mill House – your outward route. Rejoin the road (Crowtree Lane)and go left, passing Westgate fields and continuing to reach the start of the pavement. Follow the road to its end, passing the buildings of King Edward VI Grammar School on the left (F). Cross to Gospelgate, walk a few yards then go left, into Schoolhouse Lane. Continue on, going right into Westgate where the church comes into view – your starting point. n Grimsby & Louth Rambler’s Group, 01472 591830. 97

LINCOLNSHIRE WALKS

n Walking Beside Grantham Canal... Distance: 10.8 miles / 17.3 km. Description: A lovely walk largely along canal towpath and trackbed of a disused railway, so fairly level walking. The estate village of Denton is explored and there are good views of Belvoir Castle. How to Get There: Layby on the north side of the A607at Harlaxton, NG32 1AQ SK878317.

From the layby, walk north along Peasehill Lane, taking the right-hand of a pair of farm gates (A). Continue, boundary left, to the bottom of the track where you go right, walking with the canal down to your left. As you reach the field corner, the path jinks left, climb a stile and follow a wooded route, soon emerging at the bottom of a second field. Away to the right, the spire of Harlaxton church can be seen. Cross a stile to a third field, then over another and descend steps to reach a road. Go left, cross the bridge, then drop down right to the canal towpath. Turn right and follow the path beneath the bridge. The Grantham Canal, 33 miles long, was completed in 1797 and ran from Grantham, falling through 18 locks to Trent Bridge where it joined the River Trent. It was constructed with the intention of supplying the district with cheaper coal, but as well as coke and coal, boats heading for Grantham carried lime, groceries and building materials, returning with mostly agricultural produce such as corn, beans, malt and wool. You now have around 3 miles of easy walking, following the towpath to a pub, but there are points of interest en-route. By the bridge on the opposite bank is Harlaxton Wharf, restored and reopened in July 2010. The wharf is one of many along the canal and would have been used for supplying coal and other goods to local villages. At (B) you cross a footbridge with a sluice down to your right. Two reservoirs supplied water for the canal and Denton reservoir, a few hundred yards to the south, fills the canal at this spot, the sluice being the overflow. The ‘bulge’ in the canal’s shape here facilitated the turning and passing of boats. 98

A short distance further, the Grade 2 listed Denton Bridge is reached, with Denton Wharf beyond. Next, the modern Casthorpe Bridge is encountered and following that, Casthorpe Bridal Bridge (C) You can lop almost 5 miles off the walk from this point by crossing the bridge and walking ahead over the field to reach a track (F) where you turn left. The main walk continues with the canal still left, passing beneath Longmoor Bridge, once carrying an old drove road, now the Viking Way. A short distance further, Woolsthorpe Locks come into view. Beyond the first two, you reach Woolsthorpe Bridge and here, you leave the canal to cross the bridge. Before doing so, look right to see the remains of a railway embankment and bridge. This carried an ironstone railway over the canal – you’ll walk some of the track later. This bridge now carries National Cycle Route 15; the deck, renewed in wood, would certainly no longer carry a locomotive or wagons loaded with 27 tons of iron ore! From Woolsthorpe Bridge, the old wharf and a further set of locks can be viewed. Over the bridge

you reach the Dirty Duck the first of two refreshment possibilities (and the one most likely to be open). As The Rutland Arms, the hostelry was patronised by the bargemen when the canal was operational, and takes its name from the Dukes of Rutland at Belvoir Castle. It has long had a second name, being known as the ‘Brown Duck’ until at least the 1930s. Nowadays its signs feature the more prosaic alternative name of the ‘Dirty Duck’. Beyond the pub, follow the road to a junction where you turn left. Continue along the road to a point just before the Woolsthorpe village sign and look left for a finger post that directs you diagonally across the field (D). The path makes contact with a hedge corner before continuing to a road. Cross, and take the path through woodland to a field and go left, climbing ahead, skirting woodland on the left and looking back for fine views of Belvoir Castle. As the climb eases, look left for a stile (E). Cross to enter the woodland and follow a path beneath trees to reach a road. Go over,

Lincs Pride APRIL 237.qxp 01/03/2022 13:39 Page 99

and take a cross-field path ahead that leads you to the far right corner of the field. Exit to a track – the Viking Way again – and follow it left for half a mile to a junction. Here, fork right descending to a cross-track (F). The shortened route picks up here, so go right and follow what was the trackbed of an old railway. Initially, your route follows a straight course, but notice as the track bears right, another grassy track going straight ahead (G).

The 11-mile walk continues along the track as far as a bridge, where walkers and cyclists are directed left to join a lane leading to a road. Your route follows the road left, but there is an off-road alternative the other side of the hedge, accessed a few yards along the road opposite. After about half a mile, you re-join the road anyway and continue to a junction (I). Turn right, then right again onto a lane, then follow it to a T-junction with Denton school ahead. Turn right, passing the Welby Arms pub on the right to reach the Grade I listed St. Andrews church. The impressive house behind the stone wall opposite the church is Leys House, built as a school in 1720 and restored in 1855.

Keep to the main track, eventually arriving at a handsome three-arch bridge carrying the Belvoir Road over the railway (H). For the 9-mile walk, keep left and climb the slope beneath the bridge, then double-back Go left beyond the church along the driveto reach the road. Turn right and follow way, following the Leys House wall the roadside verge. After a right boundary to a gate giving access bend, Denton church becomes to a field. Walk ahead, school A Walk Along visible and you eventually left, passing through a gate to reach two roads joining on reach a lane. Turn right and the right (I). The longer walk to a waymarked path walk joins from the right. The Grantham Canal, 33 miles on the left, beyond the last

long, was completed in 1797 and ran from Grantham, falling through 18 locks to Trent Bridge where it joined the River Trent, carrying corn and coal.

cottage. Go through the kissing gate and walk ahead, cottages left, leaving the parkland via a pair of gates. Now follow the shady path between properties to reach a road. Cross diagonally right and take the footpath between houses to a stile. Climb, then go ahead across the field, the path leading you to a footbridge beneath a large willow tree. Beyond the bridge, continue to a stile giving access to the railway path (J) (the Harlaxton branch from Casthorpe Junction, passed earlier). Walk right for a couple of yards then take the stile on the left and climb the field ahead to reach a road. Cross with care and go over another stile, then head half-left across the field, aiming for houses on the far side. Pass over another stile, soon followed by a gate that gives access to a driveway (K). Follow this to a surfaced lane and on, to a road. Turn left and follow the pavement to the main road, crossing with care. n Grantham Rambler’s Group, 07761 100298.

LINCOLNSHIRE WALKS

n A Walk Around Fishtoft... Distance: 8.6 miles / 13.8km. Description: An easy, level walk along riverbank, field paths and tracks, but with some road walking. In summer, long grass between points F & G makes the going difficult. Allow about four hours. How to Get There: Layby on Fishtoft Road near playing fields, PE21 0RR, TF361423.

Leaving your car, turn into Gaysfield Road and pass the Red Cow pub on your right. A little further, go right, into Old School Lane, follow this, then on reaching a property, veer right and walk with the property boundary on the left. Now, follow waymarks on a clear path, following it left, over a ditch (A). The route closely follows water-filled ditches as you continue, heading towards grey warehouses in the distance. On reaching a road via a footbridge with the warehouse ahead. Turn left along the tarmac for a few yards, then go right, walking with the building on your right. Cross a footbridge and climb steps beyond. At the top, continue to a path junction where you go left (B).

You eventually reach the path alongside The Haven, where you continue, river right, to sewage works. Here, keep to the bank, ignoring a path down to the left. Climb stiles before and after the works and continue, passing a path joining from the left. Eventually, you go through a gate to reach a car park where an information board tells you that this is the Havenside Nature Reserve (C). From the Havenside Country Park, follow the footpath passing the Pilgrim Fathers’ memorial to your left. This small granite obelisk mounted on a granite block, commemorates the Pilgrims’ first attempt at finding religious freedom. In September 1607 they attempted to escape to Holland by chartering a Dutch vessel to transport them. The attempt was thwarted when the captain betrayed them to the local authorities, and the memorial was erected by Boston Council in 1957, on the 350th anniversary of the event. Keep to the path closest to the river, going through a gate from the memorial, then over two stiles and passing the defunct ‘Jolly Sailor’ pub.

The path now bears left, crossing the Hobhole Drain outfall, then right, to pick up the coastal path again. Ignore a path left (an old sea bank) and continue, to pass a car park at Cut End (D), then on, over a stile. A short distance further where the low ground on the left is bisected by a bank, take the path left and cross a stile (E). Form here, the path seems to be little- used as the grass grows high in the summer (and higher still further on). Continue to another stile and path junction beyond, and here, go right keeping to the bank to reach North Sea Camp, an ‘open’ prison. Climb the stile ahead, then in a short distance another to reach a driveway. Follow the drive, noticing the narrow gauge railway tracks embedded in the concrete. Follow the driveway until you reach a path climbing the bank on your left. Take this, going right at the top and climbing a stile. Now follow the top of the bank with the driveway down to your right. The drive splits and climbs to cross the bank (F) and from here, the path becomes very overgrown in summer. Cross the stile by the old gun emplacement and continue, staying on the bank as it bears left, the driveway continuing ahead. Around 400m further the bank bears right (G) and here, drop down left to a stile and footbridge to reach a track. Walk right, the track becoming a lane as it reaches properties on the right and continue, passing the fine Miramar House on the left. You have reached the hamlet of Scrane End, known as Crane End in the Domesday Book. The Grade II listed farmhouse was constructed in the late 18th century, with a redesigned façade being added around 1823. A mile of road walking now, as you follow the tarmac to a road junction. Turn right, then at the next one, go left into Grovefield Lane. At a sharp right bend (H), leave the road and walk ahead along a track, following it as it turns right, then left, to reach a watercourse. Cross the bridge to a T-junction and turn right, following the road into Fishtoft, where, the Red Cow makes a convenient end of walk refreshment stop. Your transport is just ahead, turn left at the road junction to reach it. n Boston Rambler’s Group, 07944 451958.

LINCOLNSHIRE WALKS

n Rimac’s Nature Reserve... Distance: 3.9 miles / 6km. Description: A walk for nature-lovers. An early morning walk in April or May should guarantee sights of cuckoo, as well as numerous warblers recently returned from foreign climes. How to Get There: Rimac car park, off the A1031, LN11 7TT, TF467917.

From the car park at Rimac, enter the reserve through the gate and turn right. Rimac is named after a sailing brig that went aground off North Somercotes on December 12th, 1874. It’s thought the brig itself was named after the Rimac River in Peru. Follow the path, boundary right, until you arrive at a junction (A), with a track right and ahead, and path left. Go left on this sandy path, soon reaching a pond on the left with a gate right. (If you wanted a shorter walk, continue, passing an MoD installation, to reach the beach.) The walk continues through the gate, following a meandering path through the nature reserve and exiting to a track where you go left. In a short distance, you reach the Churchill Lane car park (B) and from the far side, you take the path going left through the dunes to the beach. Turn left and walk with the dunes and bushes left to reach a path on the left – this is where the shortcut emerges (C). 102

Continue, keeping close to the bushes on the left – don’t wander seaward – eventually reaching another path on the left (D). Following this will lead you straight back to your starting point. The flora of the saltmarsh changes throughout the seasons; in July and August, flowers of the sea lavender create a haze of purple looking across the marsh. Around the same time, common glasswort, also known as 'Marsh Samphire' grows in the wetter parts of the marsh – the ‘sea asparagus’ on the menu of up-market restaurants. Sea-purslane is also edible; found on the upper areas of the marsh, it is so prolific at Rimac that it is often overlooked, even when it is displaying its tiny golden flowers in late summer. The handsome purple and yellow sea aster flowers well into the autumn, so provides a valuable source of nectar for lateflying butterflies. The seed heads are a favourite of the goldfinch and tinkling flocks can be seen moving from site to site across the marsh.

If you are happy to continue, walk on for another half-mile to the next opening and here, go left to reach Sea View car park. Walk through and onto a lane for a short distance, then go left into the now-defunct Sea View Farm, (E). This area is now owned by Lincs Wildlife Trust who are developing it as a conservation area. Walk ahead across the grass to a stile on the far side. Once over, all routes lead back to your starting point, but the best views are to be had by going left, then following a narrow path that climbs the dunes. Eventually, you reach steps that you descend, then go right beyond the gate to pick up the path to your transport. The ridge of dunes developed in the mid1800s following the diversion of the Great Eau. The older landward dunes at the start of the walk formed in the 7th to 8th centuries during violent storms. n Grimsby & Louth Rambler’s Group, 01472 591830.

HUMBER BRIDGE GARDEN CENTRE

Humber Bridge Garden Centre OPENING THIS SPRING

Exciting news this month as North Lincolnshire becomes home to the county’s newest lifestyle destination shopping experience right on the banks of the Humber. Allow us to introduce you to the Humber Bridge Garden Centre, opening in April! Words: Rob Davis.

THERE’S A SENSE OF ANTICIPATION as we arrive at the site of what will soon be Lincolnshire’s newest lifestyle destination shopping experience. Drum roll please! We’d like to introduce you to... the Humber Bridge Garden Centre, which will be preparing to open as Pride goes to press. Already on the site is The Old Tile Works Restaurant & Coffee Shop, popular with nature lovers, families stretching their legs along the river and traffic passing over the bridge. Between the restaurant and the tile works, too, is a craft village with craft gin and ale producers, a vintage sweet shop and bakery, furniture restoration workshops and jewellers. There’s more to the site than meets the eye, as owner Harry Harrison recognised when he sought planning permission to create a garden centre on the site to broaden its appeal. That planning permission was granted in 2020, and then... Covid. “I’ve many years experience in retail, but this is the most excited I’ve been for a long time,” says the centre’s consultant buyer Sarah Allison. 106

Lincs Pride APRIL 237.qxp 01/03/2022 13:39 Page 107

Barton on Humber’s

Old Tile Works Ground was eventually broken six months ago, so Harry and Jake Massarella, project managers have been working hard ever since to prepare the new lifestyle garden centre for its April opening. Sarah is creating something completely unique on the site of The Old Tile Works. Its a site whose name is a bit misleading, because the company there, William Blyth remains very much active on the site, still making heritage clay tiles and garden pottery by hand, in much the same way as they’ve been doing for over 180 years. It’s a location with huge provenance and a great history. It’s quite a paradox, too, because on the one hand it’s an industrial location once characterised by clay pits and their associated industries, also dominated by the hulking 1970s/80s Humber Bridge next door, which is so essential to commerce on both sides of the estuary.

The site of The Old Tile Works has been home to William Blyth since 1840, and workers still hand-make clay roof tiles and garden pottery with clay extracted from the banks of the Humber.

“It’s an ideal size, large enough to ensure we can offer a broad range of products, but not too large that we have to compete on volume,” says Sarah.

“We’ve already begun to receive deliveries of stock and the products we have are really high quality, really lovely products.” And yet the site is also adjacent to Barton on Humber’s Far Ings nature reserve, with its entirely unique ecosystem, and to acres of surrounding wildlife habitats and countryside. It’s expansive but really... quite pretty. “About a third of the centre will be dedicated to core gardening, products and plant. Two thirds of it will be dedicated to homes and interiors ranges, ceramics, decorative items, artisan soaps, stationery and gifts, so it’ll be a really lovely shopping destination.”

“Because of our size, we can also price our ranges competitively too, despite their quality and their provenance.” “The site is around 17 acres in total, and when we open in early April, with an official opening on Easter weekend, we’re really looking forward to our visitors’ reaction.” “We’re creating an exciting, high quality retail experience that will be as unique and as special as the location in which it’s based.”

Find Out More: Humber Bridge Garden Centre will open in April. Also on the site is The Old Tile Works restaurant and coffee shop plus its craft businesses. The centre is located on Far Ings Road Barton-Upon-Humber, DN18 5RF. Call 01652 637095 or see www.humberbridgegardencentre.co.uk.

WEDDINGS

A Walled Garden Wedding Charlotte and Charlie held their wedding at Scrivelsby Walled Garden. After working within the NHS during the ups-and-downs of Covid, this is one wedding that deserved to be a very special day! Wedding Photographer: Nick Haigh Photography, 07748 574766, nickhaighphotography.co.uk.

“WE MET AT NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY in 2012,” says Charlotte. “10 years feels like an extremely long-time ago! We planned a three-week road trip around the States. On the second day we went to the Grand Canyon at sunset which is a special place for me,” says Charlie. “I went with my family as a child so the place was already filled with lovely memories and I wanted to share them, and make new ones, with Charlotte.”

WEDDING SUPPLIERS CHARLOTTE & CHARLIE

“It was the most spectacular place for a proposal,” says Charlotte. “When we wanted to call our families to share the news, we had no signal, being in the middle of nowhere so we ended up waking family up at 5am to tell everyone!” Working tirelessly within the NHS throughout the pandemic and after two years of postponements, their big day finally could go ahead and despite having to change their summer wedding to autumn, the weather was on their side with 20 degree heat and sunshine all day, you could have mistaken the date to be June. “I always wanted to get married in St. James’ Church in Louth as it’s where I grew up,” says Charlotte. “When I was younger, I was in the chamber choir and I was always there for my school’s end-of-term services, so it’s a special place to me, and it was important for me to be married there.” It didn’t take the couple long to find the venue of their dreams for the reception, either. “Scrivelsby Walled Garden was the second venue we visited, and it was perfect. Leaving there, I said to Charlotte, ‘that’s the venue for us!’” “We hadn’t any preconceived ideas, but Charlie wanted something unique and differ-

ent. He never wanted a hotel setting, and we both wanted something more individual.” “When it came to planning the rest of the wedding, we didn’t really have a colour scheme we just knew we wanted it to be quite natural and rustic. The dresses just seemed to tie this in and the green reflected a more autumnal feel. The bridesmaid dresses were sourced online and came with a full day’s fashion show to pick the right dress, whilst the grooms’s tailoring was from Trotter and Dean, who provided a full Scottish tweed suit. “Our flowers were provided by Vincent and Stubbs who have an amazing eye. Everything from the bouquets to the table decorations, to the tipi foliage was all created by Poppy. She brought every fine detail of our ideas together keeping our style foliage. The owner of the venue even allowed her to cut flowers and greenery onsite to incorporate into the day.” “My father’s cousin kindly donated his vintage campervan for the bridal party, even altering the suspension to make sure it was safe for all six bridesmaids! We arrived in style in my Gran’s cousin’s vintage Rolls Royce in which we believe Winston Churchill had once been a passenger!” “It was a slow, but leisurely journey from Louth to Horncastle, hitting little more than 20 miles an hour! We had to pull over to let the coaches with our guests in to go past because of the speed,” says Charlie. “We made a spur of the moment decision which worked out well, because it was lovely having the guests being there to greet us on arrival which was a beautiful experience.” Because of this journey the couple were able to enjoy half an hour of new wedding bliss with beautiful weather and the view over the Wolds. >> 111

WEDDINGS

>> “We decided last minute to have a string quartet for our drinks reception, Moore Strings were a perfect fit, our guests felt they were in Bridgerton, with our music alternating between classical music and modern songs.” “We had a band for the evening called Breakthrough who travelled from Brighton,” says Charlie.” “The whole day really reflected us as a couple. We didn’t want ‘air and graces,’ just to have a really relaxed feel to the whole day. We were overjoyed for the whole time. It was so perfect, working throughout the pandemic in NHS had been so hard, and we haven’t seen some of the people on the day for so long. The day felt like such a huge release… I don’t think anyone there had been to a large social event for months, so everyone let loose completely and enjoyed the day, which made it perfect.” “We had our honeymoon in St Lucia, which was so beautiful. The plane was virtually empty, but it was amazing to be in a different country after a couple of years of going nowhere. We stayed in a small boutique resort. We didn’t do much, but it was lovely to just be in a calm environment, and everyone was relaxed there.” “My advice to other brides is probably to remember that you have more time than you think, so enjoy the process, as well as the day itself. Don’t get stressed and always remember that it’s meant to be a day you enjoy!” n Wedding Photographer: Nick Haigh Photography, 07748 574766, nickhaighphotography.co.uk.

Arabian Night EASTERN PROMISES were fulfilled recently thanks to a fundraising evening with an Arabian Nights theme, attended by nearly 400 people. The event was organised by Tanya Beresford and the Heaven & Hell fundraising committee, based in Spalding, and was held at the town’s Springfields Exhibition Centre. The ball was held to raise money for The Lighthouse Subject – which helps to find accommodation for young people struggling in difficult circumstances, and also local 11-year old Kiya Clark as she battles MELAS, a strain of mitochondrial disease. Belly dancers and a snake charmer entertained guests, as did a table game, a silent auction and party band RPJ. The committee included Tanya, Robert Bell, Clair Turner, Rachel Beresford, Sharla Slayven and Mandy Baxter. Event sponsors included Naylor Farms, CER Groundworks, Moore Thompson, GMT Biogas and Infotel Solutions. n Images: Rob Davis.

RAMSAY FITZWILLIAM HOSPITAL

Access Private Health Care

WITHOUT WAITING Ramsay Health Care’s Fitzwilliam Hospital is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing needs of their local communities. Providing exceptional healthcare alongside its NHS partners has always been their top priority. The value and benefit of this working relationship, though, has never been more evident than over the past couple of years...

THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC, Fitzwilliam Hospital worked together with the NHS to support the in unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic and deliver other urgent operations and cancer treatments for local residents. Local Ramsay hospitals continue to work collaboratively with the NHS to help clear the backlog of patients waiting for elective surgery as well as patients who require urgent treatment. However, the NHS now faces significant challenges in restoring its services. NHS waiting lists are at record levels as they try to address thebacklog of demand for care. Diagnostics and screenings, elective procedures through to cancer treatment are all affected. So, it comes as no surprise that more patients in Peterborough and its local communities are considering private healthcare.

Going private with Ramsay can mean the difference between waiting years or having access to high-quality diagnostics and treatment. Many patients who need elective procedures such as orthopaedic and spinal surgery (spinal fusion, hip and knee replacements) can find their quality of life is affected. By choosing Fitzwilliam Hospital, patients can be fully recovered from their operation and enjoying life again. Fitzwilliam Hospital is an Orthopaedic Centre and has recently invested in a replacement state-of-the-art MRI scanner to provide easy access to the latest diagnostic facilities that can be difficult to access on the NHS. Fitzwilliam Hospital offer patients access to convenient appointments, diagnostics and treatment without waiting and direct access to a Consultant led service. If you have private health insurance, now might be the time to consider using it, so that

you can get the treatment you need and return to the things you love sooner. Fitzwilliam Hospital is recognised by all major medical insurers. This means that most medically required procedures will be covered by your private health insurance. You will need to check to find out what your plan covers and if you have any excess to pay. The excess might be covered by your employer if your insurance is through them. Many patients pay for their treatment themselves. Fitzwilliam Hospital have a number of finance options to support their patients so they can access the treatment they need right now rather than waiting. They offer interest-free finance with no deposit required and affordable monthly instalments; an all-inclusive fixed price TotalCare package; and pay as you go flexible payments to pay for treatment as and when costs arise. n

Find Out More: The Peterborough-based Fitzwilliam Hospital offer insurance-based and self-pay care with all-inclusive prices or 0% finance available. You can access the latest diagnostics and treatments across most medical disciplines, usually with no waiting lists. To find out more, call 01733 261717 or see www.fitzwilliamhospital.co.uk. 125

O’BRIEN’S OPTICIANS

The Best Diagnosis Brand new, state-of-the-art equipment at O’Brien’s Opticians in Brigg is now facilitating the very best diagnostic capabilities to ensure the best eyecare in the country. Optometrist Dr. Sheeraz Janjua’s new equipment provides hospital-standard insight into your health and is one of just a handful of such machines anywhere in the UK... Foresight. Hindsight. Insight. It’s quite clear how much importance we place on sight. We’ve all come to recognise that a first-class optometrist will not only make your vision sharper, as a result of the prescription they determine you need, but will also help to assess your overall health, using your eyes to as an indicator of your general health.

the optic nerve, macular and to detect and monitor the progression of conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma.

As eye-care technology has finessed, some optometrists have invested in decent technology, but some diagnostic equipment remains the preserve of dedicated eye-care departments in specialist hospitals such as Moorfields, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and Nottingham’s Queens Medical Centre. Those specialist facilities and teaching

The system also uses artificial intelligence to track the exact position of successive scans, overlaying them precisely to check changes over successive months or years. Fast, contact-free and painless, the system can also send images to hospital departments for other clinicians to review in the event of a referral.

hospitals have previously been able to boast the best diagnostic technology, which High Street opticians could only look upon with envy... that is, until now.

“We can use the technology to examine tiny details that help us to detect eye disease at the earliest stages, reducing the risk of sight loss and improving our patients’ lives,” says Sheeraz. Naturally technology is nothing without expertise, and so Sheeraz is committed to interpreting the results of a scan and explaining findings in an accessible way.

Brigg’s O’Brien’s Opticians, established in 1979, recently took delivery of its new Heidelberg Spectralis machine which is – without exaggeration – the best OCT scanner available for any eye-care practitioners, and one which most dedicated hospital eyecare departments would covet. It’s one of just a handful of machines here in the UK and as Dr Sheeraz Janjua, owner of O’Brien’s says, it’s the gold standard for dedicated eye hospitals, let alone a High Street optician, providing him with unprecedented accuracy and clarity when making a diagnosis. An OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) machine is used to take a 3D scan of the eye to allow a specialist to assess the health of

O’Brien’s new machine, though, builds on this technology to create 4D imagery accurate to just a single micron – one hundredth of the width of a human hair.

With the highest quality diagnostic information comes the most accurate prescription, and alongside the very best ophthalmic lenses from across the industry – Zeiss, Nikon and Hoya – the practice’s state-ofthe-art equipment is crucial, but only when used alongside the very best diagnostic skill and the provision of quality ophthalmic lenses and luxury frames. Above: O’Brien’s new Heidelberg Spectralis OCT machine is one of the few in the UK, and is best in class, offering hospital-standard diagnosis of eye health for the optician’s patients.

The result is great service, clear vision and true peace of mind; a holistic service that’s clearly better at providing quality eyecare. n

O’Briens Opticians provides eye examinations, prescription eyewear and contact lenses from its practice on Wrawby Street, Brigg, DN20 8BS. Call 01652 653 595 or see www.obriensopticians.co.uk.

MOTORS

Riding in

STYLE There’s a new special edition of Porsche’s popular, capable, flagship SUV. The Cayenne Platinum Edition promises extra style and equipment, whilst building on the model’s existing practicality, luxury, performance and handling...

‘MORE IS MORE, AND LESS IS MUCH LESS,’ so they say, and elsewhere, ‘too much of a good thing is great.’ Which brings us to a new special edition of the indomitable Cayenne, Porsche’s flagship sports SUV. Over 92,000 Cayennes were sold worldwide each year pre-pandemic, and though its smaller sibling – the Macan – sold 98,000, the fact that together the two SUVs have sold 190,000 of Porsche’s total 280,000 worldwide sales, gives you a good idea of just how well-regarded the vehicle is. Little surprise; both Porsche’s smaller Macan and the larger Cayenne blend the characteristics of a practical SUV with great handling and performance, throwing in luxury and a prestige badge on the car’s bonnet too. 128

There are firebreathing Turbo, coupé, hybrid and GT versions of the Cayenne, rising to just under £150,000. To our mind a coupé SUV is a less-practical proposition, and entry-level Cayennes provide all the performance and equipment you need. For that reason, we’ll direct you to this new Platinum Edition Cayenne, in SUV form, rather than the coupé. The special trim is characterised by exclusive co-ordinated design elements like a satin Platinum paint

finish as well as extra standard equipment such as a panoramic roof, eight-way electric leather seats, a Bose sound system and enhanced LED headlights. Model-exclusive 21-inch wheels are standard, as are sports tailpipes. Inside, there are Platinum Edition embossed logos, and textured aluminium finishers. The car is powered by a silky 3.0V6 engine, with torque to spare and plenty of comfortable cruising capability. The Cayenne is already a beltingly good prospect, and we think this version is the ultimate expression of an already brilliant vehicle. We’d opt for a Platinum Edition over other Cayennes, and as a day-to-day proposition, we think drivers will quickly see why the Cayenne continues to be a storming success for Porsche. n
