welcome letter

The subject matter for this magazine has never been a problem for me.

I don’t credit that to my flawless abilities in journalism but to the fabulous county that I get to write about each month.

There’s always something undiscovered, always a new group of people doing something exciting and always a beautiful part of Lincolnshire that we have yet to feature. This month we’ve looked at some of the county’s most well known discoveries from a different

angle as we feature the area’s castles...from the skies. We’ve also been clay shooting with the Femmes Fatales, a fantastic group of ladies who love the country sport.

A great place to discover too this summer is Doddington Hall’s gardens. We’ve spoken to the very talented head gardener in this edition. Our best wishes for a wonderful month,

Tilly Wilkinson, Editor,

A COLLECTION OF OVER 16,000 POSTCARDS DATING BACK TO VICTORIAN TIMES SELLS FOR £22,000...

The 40’s Festival consists of a wide variety of 40’s ‘Home Front’ themed events which take place at numerous venues across the village throughout the weekend. LOUTH 16,000 postcards depicting life in Lincolnshire have recently sold for nearly £22,000 at auction. The cards belonged to the late David Robinson, who was a local historian, writer and lecturer. Louth-based auctioneers John Taylors said there had been a huge interest in the collection. James Laverack, from the firm, said the most expensive lot, depicting Kesteven villages, sold for £2,500. “Another set of 1,000 postcards of Lincolnshire villages - an A-Z index made £2,050,” he said.

It’s £5 for Park & Ride and one or two concerts are ticket only, but other than that all the entertainment throughout the village is free! n woodhall-spa-40s-festival.com. The collection, which was divided up into 40 lots each containing around 150 to 1,000 postcards featuring a particular place or subject matter, was expected to sell for between £15,000 and £20,000. They were said to be the largest collection of historical Lincolnshire images ever put up for sale. Jean Howard, who was a friend of Mr Robinson, and responsible for cataloguing the collection, said she was pleased people valued them. n The collection also included industrial scenes like this view of Grimsby Docks (left) - John Taylors.

Sophie’s Chelsea Win... SOPHIE ALLPORT FROM STAMFORD SCOOPS A FIVE STAR AWARD AT THE ANNUAL SHOW

Red Arrow replica outside Number 10...

BOSTON A life-sized replica of a red arrow jet has been placed right outside Number 10 on Downing Street to celebrate the RAF’s centenary. The RAF was formed more than 100 years ago on 1st April 1918, when the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged to create the RAF. The merger between the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service resulted in the creation of the world's first independent air service. To mark the milestone, Prime Minister Theresa May recently hosted a reception at Number 10 for personnel and trainees from across all three UK military services, plus veterans and civil servants from the Ministry of Defence. Among the 150 guest that were invited along to the event, the heads of the RAF, Royal Navy and Army attended. A street party, made up of junior ranks from the RAF, Fleet Air Arm and Army Air Corps, greeted those attending, along with the Red Arrows Hawk copy.

STAMFORD Local designer Sophie Allport has been presented with a five star award at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for her trade stand. Showcasing her new Chelsea Flower Show mug, Royal Wedding and Royal Baby mugs, the team at Bourne based Sophie Allport have worked tirelessly behind the scenes for the ninth year in the months leading up to the world-renowned event. With 157,000 visitors descending on Chelsea it’s one of the busiest shows the team attends throughout the year. n www.sophieallport.com.

NEWS In Brief

DONNA NOOK

COASTGUARD DISCOVER HIDDEN BUS IN THE SEA Coastguard teams who rushed to the seafront were stunned to find a single-decker bus abandoned in the water. Crews from Donna Nook and Cleethorpes couldn’t believe their eyes when they arrived at the water’s edge to see the waves crashing against the side of the bus.”

The bus, which has an advert for an East Lindsey taxi firm in the windscreen, was found on Cleethorpes Beach. No one was found on the bus after police called the coastguards to the scene at around 2.45am. It was originally reported to the police by a member of the public who saw it driven onto the beach.

Due to the fact that there was also a risk of pollution from oil and diesel from the bus, it was towed out of the water, back onto the roadside. n

“Lincoln was third in prosperity and wealth across the country in Norman times, and the city even had its own mint...”

The county is known for one in particular but it’s actually home to several others too that are too often overlooked. The history of Lincolnshire dates back to the stone age a few early Neolithic settlements have been identified in including a hollow at Dragonby, pottery and flint at Great Ponton, and pottery found in a later barrow at Walesby so there’s no wonder why we have an abundance of ancient architecture throughout the county.

Throughout this feature, we’ve the history of each castle, even some of the lost ones, and some incredible drone shots of Lincolnshire Castles from the skies... Lincoln Castle A focus on castles in the county would not be complete without discussing Lincoln Castle. By Norman times, Lincoln was the third city of the realm in prosperity and importance. The city even had its own mint for making coins. In 1068, two years after the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror began building Lincoln Castle on a site occupied since Roman times. One of the first structures on the site was the Lucy Tower motte and its bailey, to which another motte and stone walls were added early in the 12th century. These would have dominated the skyline along with the nearby Cathedral. For 900 years the castle has been used as a court and prison. The coffin like pews in the chapel were to remind prisoners of their fate and to ensure that they could not see each other. Many prisoners were deported to Australia and others executed on the ramparts.

Visiting Lincoln Castle today, you will be able to see the an original of the famous scripture the Magna Carta, a document that completely changed this country’s history. There is also the Medieval Wall Walk which is a 360º walk and a complete circuit of the castle walls, with audio tour and dungeons to explore.

Finally, a visit to Lincoln Castle would not be complete without visiting the Victorian Prison. Experience the hope and hardship of the prisoners in Lincoln. (01522 554559, www.lincolncastle.com)

Tattershall Castle Tattershall is a magnificent 15th century red brick castle in Tattershall south of Woodhall Spa. Rising from the flat Lincolnshire fens, Tattershall Castle, with its Gothic fireplaces and church-like windows, was designed to impress.

Right: Lincoln Castle from the skies and a view from the Castle Wall Walk.

18

In 1231 Robert de Tateshale received a licence from King Henry III to build a crenelated manor house at Tattershall. His castle consisted of a great hall, kitchens, gatehouse and a chapel defended by a curtain wall and a single moat. In the 15th century the Castle was passed to Ralph, 3rd Baron Cromwell. In 1433 Lord Cromwell upgraded his small, crumbling ancestral seat into an opulent home

designed on a palatial scale. The inner moat enlarged and an outer moat added. In 1643 a big part of the Castle was destroyed or damaged during the Civil War. The Royalists, led by the Earl of Newcastle who was sweeping across Lincolnshire, attacked the castle and left only the Great Tower intact.

After the Kings defeat Parliament ordered the demolition of the entire castle. The Earl of Lincoln appealed to Parliament to leave the Great Tower intact and due to his repeated pleas the demolition order was overlooked. The castle became abandoned and derelict in the 19th century, and was to be exported to America, but Lord Curzon of Kedleston bought it and saved it. In his will, he left the property to the National Trust.

The rescue efforts of this Lincolnshire landmark prompted the first piece of buildings conservation legislation in the world; shaping the future by protecting the past. The 1913 Ancient Monuments Consolidation and Amendment Act forms the basis of our heritage protection laws that helps charities like the National Trust to conserve buildings, places and spaces for ever, for everyone. It’s a fabulously romantic story and a beautiful place to visit commanding far reaching views across Lincolnshire. (01526 342543, www.nationaltrust.org.uk/tattershall-castle).

LINCOLNSHIRE’S

Lost Castles There are several fantastic castles to visit in Lincolnshire but unfortunately some of them have not withstood the test of time...

Bourne Castle: A Norman castle was built by Baldwin FitzGilbert. In medieval times there was motte and double bailey castle which formed an unusual concentric plan. The castle was destroyed after being used by Cromwell’s troops in 1645 and a farmhouse was built on the site. Traces of the enclosed mound and inner and outer moats are all that now survive. Carlton Castle: Castle Hill is the name given to the once substantial motte and bailey, perhaps double bailey, apparently associated with the then new town of Castle Carlton, seven miles south-east of Louth. Only the motte and some ditching remain and they are now overgrown.

Kingerby Castle: It was a motte and bailey castle which was burnt down in 1216. The motte was then altered to form a platform for a manor house which was built on the site. In 1812 the manor house was demolished and replaced by Kingerby Hall, still standing. Sleaford Castle: Built by the Bishop of Lincoln in the early 1120s, it was habitable as late as 1555 but fell into disrepair during the latter half of the 16th century. King John and Henry VIII are known to have stayed here. Somerton Castle: The property was given to King Edward II in 1309. King John II of France was imprisoned here in 1359 having been taken prisoner after the Battle of Poitiers.

Grimsthorpe Castle Each section of this castle in Bourne has a different appearance, reflecting the different architectural styles that have been employed there since building began in the 13th century. Once inside you’re able to see the vast collection of paintings, furniture and tapestries. Thrones and furnishings from the House of Lords are also available to view. Grimsthorpe Castle has been in the Willoughby de Eresby family for 500 years and remains in the family today.

It was granted by Henry VIII to William, Baron Willoughby de Eresby on the occasion of his marriage to the lady-in-waiting to Katherine of Aragon, in 1516. The oldest part of the castle, King John’s Tower, was built in the early 13th century. It is the main front which gives the castle its grandeur. The gardens have been designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

During the First World War Grimsthorpe Park was used by the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force as an emergency landing ground. During the Second World War the central part of the park was used as

“Bolingbroke Castle was the birthplace of Henry of Bolingbroke, also known as King Henry IV in the 1300s...” a bombing range. In 1944 the castle housed a company of the Parachute Regiment while it was recovering from operations. You should visit Grimsthorpe at least once if not for its history and tapestries but for its extensive and beautiful grounds. (01778 591205, www.grimsthorpe.co.uk)

Bolingbroke Castle Bolingbroke Castle was one of three castles built by Ranulf de Blundeville, Earl of Chester and Lincoln, in the 1220s after his return from the Crusades. After his death, the castle remained in the ownership of the Earls of Lincoln and was later inherited through marriage by John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. Above: Lincoln Castle from the skies clearly shows the different towers, entrances and the length of the wall walk.

An extremely powerful member of the royal court, John of Gaunt became guardian of Richard II when the young king succeeded to the throne at the age of 10. John of Gaunt and his first wife, Blanche, lived at the castle during the 1360s. Their son, Henry of Bolingbroke, was born there in 1367.

Henry had a tempestuous relationship with Richard II and was exiled in 1397. He returned to England after the death of his father in 1399, enraged that the king had seized the estates he had inherited. These events marked the end of Richard II’s reign. Henry of Bolingbroke claimed the throne from his unpopular rival, and Richard imprisoned. Soon afterwards, Henry was crowned king as Henry IV. Unfortunately, during the Civil War, the castle became a defensible base for a Royalist garrison and was besieged by Parliamentarian forces in 1643. The Royalists surrendered that winter, and the entire castle was destroyed. The castle is managed by English Heritage and although it’s now in ruin, it’s beautiful in the way that nature has taken over, making it part of the natural landscape. Newark Castle Newark Castle was founded in the mid 12th century by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln. Originally a timber castle, it was rebuilt in stone towards the end of the century.

Newark Castle and Gardens are formal gardens bordered by the remaining walls of Newark Castle which was partly destroyed in 1646 at the end of the English Civil War. The Castle has stood proudly on the banks of the River Trent for nearly 900 years.

The most famous event in the castle’s long history came in 1216, when King John died here, after consuming the infamous ‘surfeit of peaches.’ Tradition suggests that the king died in the south-west tower, but it is more likely that he was staying in an apartment within the grand gatehouse that dominates the site today. Due to the Civil War following King John’s death, the destruction of the castle meant that only one and a half sides of the castle still stand. It’s enough however to give an idea of how impressive the original fortress must have been. The west front, facing onto the river, is what is left to view today. (01636 650000, www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk) Main: Belvoir Castle. Above: Newark Castle.

Belvoir Castle Belvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland. The family have lived at Belvoir in an unbroken line for almost a thousand years.

The land was a gift from William the Conqueror to one of his Norman barons Robert de Todeni who fought for him at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

The castle is now in its fourth incarnation with wars taking a toll on its architecture. The castle you see today was built in the 1800s. The first was a Norman royal castle that eventually was left in ruins until the Earl of Rutland, started the construction of a new castle in 1528.

This second incarnation of Belvoir Castle is what held the story of the witches of Belvoir; three castle servants that were accused of the murder of the Earl’s two young sons.

During the English Civil War, it was one of the more notable strongholds of the king’s supporters and King Charles spent a night here on his way into Lincolnshire. However, the parliamentarians destroyed it in 1649 and a new home started to be built six years later for the 9th Earl of Rutland. The Castle cost £11,730 to build which is equivalent to around £1,850,000 in today’s rates. The Earl was made a Duke in this third castle, and the castle has been the seat of the Dukes of Rutland for three centuries.

Unfortunately, the Castle was nearly entirely destroyed in a fire in 1816 which cost around £8,430,000 in today’s rates, and included paintings by Van Dyck, Titian and Rubens. It was rebuilt for £6,990,000 in today’s rates much to the style of the third Belvoir Castle, incorporating styles of medieval castles, reminiscent of Windsor Castle and this was completed in 1832. This is what you see today. (01476 871001, www.belvoircastle.com)

SSASs are ideally suited for small to medium sized limited companies (though also used by Partnerships) and don’t require a third party provider like an insurance company as the company sponsors the SSAS instead. Company pension contributions can be varied in line with profitability and the trustees/members can invest the scheme funds in a wide range of assets including: Commercial property and land Cash deposits, equities (including the company’s own shares) and fixed interest securities The SSAS can borrow up to 50% of the Scheme assets to help purchase for example a new commercial property or indeed can lend up to 50% of the Scheme’s assets to the company for any purpose (up to 100% to an unconnected third party). Ta ax efficiency: Company contributions qualify for corporation tax relief Investment income and gains (other than dividend income) are generally completely free of any taxes 25% of the Fund can paid out as a tax free lump sum from age 55 (or 100% of the Fund on death before age 75, currently post age 75 at the beneficiaries income tax rate when drawdown)

24

The administration fees can be paid by the company, are tax deductible, and therefore leave the maximum amount in the pension The whole fund can be “inherited” by your beneficiaries and drawn down in stages tax free at any age, or left to cascade down the generations. How does a SSAS work? Contributions can be paid in by both the members and the company into the Scheme bank account. Other pension funds can be transferred in, in cash and/or other acceptable assets like property. By pooling contributions together members may obtain greater investment opportunities. The maximum number of members is 11, though in our experience most SSASs are for the family members of the company or business partners usually up to four. A pension is a long term investment and the fund may fluctuate and can go down depending on the investment type. Your eventual income may depend upon the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation. The value of investments and income from them can go down and you may not get back the original amount invested.

Where there’s a Will, there’s not always a way... By Gino Ballestracci, Litigation Executive in the Wills & Inheritance disputes team at Wilkin Chapman solicitors.

THERE is no doubt that we must all make a Will, presided over by a legal expert – in order that our final wishes are met.

However, such documents, while official and binding, can be contested and such action is becoming increasingly common. In fact, figures obtained by one national newspaper revealed how, in the early 2000s, there had been a 700 per cent rise in the number of such actions launched at London’s High Court. It is a recent High Court hearing that I wish to highlight, which saw defeat for a son determined to contest his late father’s Will. Held in Leeds and presided over by His Honour Judge Mark Raeside QC, the case involved a brother and sister and the Will of their late father. As a member of the Wills & Inheritance Disputes team at Wilkin Chapman, I had the privilege of acting for the successful daughter in this claim.

The father had made various Wills in the past and was living with his son until 2011, when he made the decision to reside with his daughter. It was

around this time that his Will was changed to the exclusion of his son.

“700% increase in contested Wills”

Added to that, a year later in 2012, the father was diagnosed as suffering with dementia and subsequently died in 2014 – with the entirety of the father’s estate passing to his daughter. The son maintained two allegations: • His father lacked capacity to make a Will at the material time owing to the onset of dementia; • The daughter had exerted undue influence over her father which overpowered his wishes.

This resulted in the daughter being forced to issue court proceedings for a declaration that her father’s 2011 Will was valid.

After hearing all factual evidence at trial, His Honour Judge Mark Raeside QC was unable to find any case which would have raised a single doubt about capacity and further held that the son had been unable to satisfy the test which is to be applied in cases of undue influence.

Accordingly, judgment was granted in the daughter’s favour, with costs awarded.

This is a timely reminder of how things can go wrong and the ‘high threshold’ that must be met when looking to challenge the validity of any Will, especially when arguing undue influence.

If you are looking at such matters, then please seek appropriate legal advice. It may well save you from a lot of anxiety and financial stress in the long run. HIGHLIGHTS

Hitting the Mark with the FEMMES FATALES

A clay day with all women group the Femmes Fatales is not to be missed, especially in the beautiful shooting grounds of Grimsthorpe Estate. Ahead of the event in July, I went along with regular shooters Heather and Lucy from the group to speak to Sophie who manages the shooting ground and try my hand at the country pursuit myself... Lincolnshire Pride magazine is very much a country publication, based in the heart of a naturally beautiful and agricultural county.

Words & Images: Tilly Wilkinson.

Country sporting pursuits are therefore a very common occurrence in our magazine, although this month we’re referring to a very different kind of magazine altogether.

Clay pigeon shooting has been a hobby for many since the late 19th century, and was first invented for people who could not afford the costs of shooting game.

Of course only half of the population would shoot; in Victorian times, women were not obliged to participate in such brutal and gentlemanly activities.

However the tables are certainly turning. Women have a big part to play in the sport, and the Femmes Fatales is a group of women who are strongly supporting their success. Lucy and Heather both started clay shooting around two years ago now and haven’t been able to put their guns down since.

“Shooting is predominantly a male sport still, so it was great to hear of the Femmes Fatales, and I jumped at the chance...” Main Image: Far left is Heather and to the right is Lucy. In the centre is Sophie who’s responsible for organising the shoots at Grimsthorpe Estate Shooting Grounds.

“I grew up on a farm in Derbyshire,” says Lucy. “With a strong agricultural background, I’ve always been around the sport and my father showed me the ropes. After moving to London, it became a smaller part of my life and I became less involved until I heard of the Femmes Fatales.” “What really attracted me to join was the fact that it was all girls. It’s predominantly a male sport still, and it can be intimidating as men take it very seriously.”

“With the Femmes Fatales, it gave me a new set of really close friends who loved shooting but also loved getting together, having a good chat and just enjoyed a day out together.”

Heather joined with a similar frame of mind. “It’s alway something I’ve wanted to do,” says Heather. “It’s a chance to get out into the beautiful countryside in the fresh air and it’s definitely something to tick off a bucket list. It’s now become something a lot more than just that.” 27

1 - Lincs Pride JUL 192.qxp 05/06/2018 14:29 Page 28

Lydia and Rachel were the brains behind starting the Femmes Fatales several years ago, and they both shared the same thoughts. “We want to share our passion for clay shooting with like-minded women. Women that have a love for fashion, partying, high heels and lipstick, but also like the smell of gun oil and aren’t afraid to get their boots muddy!”

They started the not-for-profit group just a few years ago now with a mission to just get local women into the sport, but it has now grown into a nationwide community and has prompted a conversation about the taboo topic of women in clay shooting.

Sophie, the organiser of the shoots at the very beautiful Grimsthorpe Estate Shooting Ground is certainly discussing the subject, and her encouragement for women to get involved has meant that 50% of bookings are made by women at the course.

“What I love about the Femmes Fatales is how easy and laid back the groups are. It’s just good light-hearted fun and a great way to socialise...” “What I love about clay pigeon shooting is that it’s a completely level playing field,” says Sophie. “I can understand that with rugby, men have the advantage, but strength isn’t a necessity in clay pigeon shooting. You don’t need to be physically fit, it just requires good aim and a steady hand.” “What I love about the Femmes Fatales is how easy and laid back the groups are. It’s

Grimsthorpe Estate: The Shooting Grounds

If you want to take up the sport and you’re seeking tuition before committing yourself to purchasing equipment and a gun licence, Grimsthorpe Estate Shooting Ground can offer one to one and group tuition. It’s the perfect place to learn, situated in the rolling countryside of the East Midlands, set in acres of stunning woodland. Opened and run as a family affair since 1989, the Grimsthorpe shooting ground accommodates a wide range of skills, with experienced and qualified instructors taking pride in providing high standards of individual and group tuition appropriate to your level of experience. “With the recent opening of our brand new purpose built clubhouse,” says Sophie, “we offer a wide variety of different services here from practice to tuition, corporate entertainment, stag and hen parties, large scale competitions and much, much more.” “Our main priority is that you have a great experience, whether it is the first time you have attempted shooting or you are a seasoned shooter wishing to improve or test yourself further, or just enjoy down time with your friends.”

28

just good light-hearted fun and a great way to socialise when you lead a very busy life. There’s no set rules, you don’t have to attend every single time, and if you haven’t been shooting for several months, it’s a sport you can just pick up again. It’s practical for busy women and it’s a great hobby.”

“It’s so inclusive too,” says Lucy. “We have people from the ages of 17 to 70 join us on the shoots, and you don’t have to come from an agricultural background. Before Femmes Fatales, I felt like you had to know someone who knew someone to participate, and all male groups can be quite daunting and sometimes condescending, simply because there aren’t many women doing it still.” “There’s nothing I love more,” says Heather, “that when a man underestimates your shooting abilities. It’s happened to me on several occasions when someone has asked if I want them to show me how to do it. It’s very fun to play naïve and follow their lead, then pick up your gun and hit every clay.”

After a brief lesson and a few tongue-in-cheek tips in shooting, Lucy and Heather handed me one of their shotguns (at their own risk). I said ‘Pull!’ and the clay pigeon came into view. In all honesty, before picking up the gun and shooting a clay disc, I didn’t see what much of the fuss was about; I thought it was just a great excuse to get out of the house and have a good girl’s day out.

However, I most definitely caught the shooting bug. I loved the feel of shattering the clay and the pull back of the gun. Therefore, I will definitely be coming along to the clay day with the Femmes Fatales at Grimsthorpe in July. The grounds are also beautiful at the shooting grounds and it’s very much like a game of golf; going from trap to trap around a winding course through beautiful countryside. There are around 12 sites at Grimsthorpe varying in difficulty. Try your hand at the sport and join me on Saturday 21st July in the grounds with the Femmes Fatales. n

A Quintessential Cup of LINCOLNSHIRE TEA

Britain is proud and patriotic about many matters - the royals, the weather, and fish & chips to name a few - but none compare to a quintessential cup of tea. Now you can enjoy a brew designed just for Lincolnshire and we’re certainly taking great pride in it... A cup of tea is undeniably British. We drink an impressive 165 million cups daily; that’s 60.2 billion brews a year.

However, we can be very particular about our tea. It has to be made correctly, and the subject of when to put the milk in - first or last - is very much a taboo subject and highly controversial. We’re also very particular about the tea itself. There’s a lot of controversy about PG Tips or Typhoo being the best bags, but of course Twinings English Breakfast or Yorkshire Gold will always make the best brew.

However, my view on tea was transformed after meeting Susie Carlisle at the Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company. Her Lincolnshire blend of tea has been designed for the county’s hard water and it is undeniably the best cup of tea I’ve ever had.

“We have tried to be uncompromising in our search for world-class smallholder high grown East of Rift Kenyan teas to blend with rich Second Flush Assams,” says Susie.

“We batch blend them on a small scale to be packed in a limited run size so that we are always offering only the freshest production. We then hand pack them into superior packaging designed by Lincolnshire artist Edward Waite to maintain and protect the teas in optimum conditions.”

Susie moved to the county to live with her husband John, originating from Surrey. She fell in love with Lincolnshire, its architecture

Coffee Company THE LINCOLN TEA &

June 2013: The Lincoln Tea and Coffee Co. is born. With a passion for tea since childhood and a love of coffee, Susie dreamt of setting up the company. Above is Susie’s grandfather.

September 2013: Susie and family attended their first event, the start of an exciting time to find out what people wanted in their cup of tea. 2013 - 2016: Alongside establishing and growing the company, they did further research into what people in Lincolnshire wanted, and realised there was demand for a Lincolnshire tea.

January 2017: They met Lincolnshire tea expert Will Battle, responsible for the World Tea Encyclopaedia and put together the best blend. March 2017: They met Lincolnshire artist Edward Waite and he designed the artwork.

2018: The official launch of Lincolnshire Tea in its retail form took place and the product is currently being made available online. The company continues to work on new products.

and its heritage, as well as the patriotism locals have for their great county and rightly so. In fact she fell in love in Lincolnshire too; John proposed to her in the Cathedral! She knew she wanted to be one of the passionate local suppliers in the area.

The Lincoln Tea & Coffee Company has been supplying coffee shops, hotels, restaurants and event centres for many years but it is only recently that they decided to launch a range of the same quality tea for people to enjoy at home. The success they have had with Lincolnshire Tea has been entirely unprecedented, and the product is now stocked in many well known retailers across the county and in restaurants too. “People are just loving Lincolnshire Tea,” says Susie. “Our customers have said ‘it’s like drinking fresh country air,’ ‘it’s the best tea I have ever tasted’ and ‘such a clean finish without any bitterness.’” This month you can buy Lincolnshire Tea online with the new eCommerce site. Stay tuned as Susie is also working with Lincolnshire Brewing Co. to produce something very special... n Buy the brew online at www.lincolnshiretea.co.uk or call 01522 681838 for more information on this fabulous local tea.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Extraordinary Story of the

BRAMLEY APPLE

The extraordinary story of the Bramley apple started from just a pip, and resulted in the creation of Extraordinary John Starkey Apple Juice. In the mid-1800s, Mr Bramley discovered an apple tree in his garden that held the secret to a miracle...

The Bramley apple is now an apple variety that is enjoyed worldwide in tarts, crumbles and in this part of the world, apple juice. In fact it is this part of the world where the Bramley apple originates from in the most extraordinary of circumstances. The very first Bramley apple tree grew from pips planted by a young girl in 1809. Mary Ann Brailsford planted them in her garden in Southwell, just west of Newark in 1809. It’s highly unlikely for an apple tree to grow and bear fruit if you plant a pip as they need to be grafted on to root stock, let alone fruit. It would be a freak of nature for the tree to bear anything other than crabapples really. A one in a million chance. But this one was different. Somehow, the tree not only grew fruit, but some of the finest apples in the country.

The tree in the garden was later included in the purchase of the cottage by a local butcher, Matthew Bramley, in 1846. In 1856, a local nurseryman, Henry Merryweather, asked if he could take cuttings from the tree and start to sell the apples. Bramley agreed but insisted that the apples should bear his name. John Starkey who had recently purchased nearby Norwood Park approached Merryweather on his findings, and became the first ever and the biggest ever commercial grower of Bramley apples.

The rest, as they say, is history and the first ever tree to bear a Bramley apple still exists in the same back garden today.

FRUITY FACTS AND FIGURES Study: The science of apple cultivation is known as Pomology.

Origins: It’s generally agreed that apples originated from Kazakhstan. Consumption: The average person will consume 65 apples per year in total.

Trees: Apple trees have a life expectancy of around 100 years.

But John Starkey’s story didn’t finish there. He continued to grow the fruit until it was handed down to his son, and then to his son after that. It’s now managed by the original John Starkey’s great granddaughter Suzannah Starkey, the fourth generation.

“The story of the Bramley apple is quite extraordinary, but there were two extraordinary instances in my family’s history that gave us the inspiration for The Bramley the name of our range of apple juices,” says Suzannah.

Apple Popularity

The 1944 fruit census recorded over two million Bramley trees in England and Wales. The original tree still bears fruit and Mary Ann’s seed has grown into a £50,000,000 industry.

Varieties: There are more than 8,000 varieties of apple, the largest fruit variety to exist. The crabapple is the only native variety to the US. Health: Apples are cholesterol-free, sodium-free and fat-free. They’re also only 80 calories.

Halloween: Apples float in water as 25% of an apple’s volume consists of air.

STARKEY’S LOCAL STOCKISTS...

“My father, who is also called John, grew cloned trees on the Bramley apple tree’s own root stock. This was a break through in the agricultural world, and something that was truly unheard of before. That’s why there was no better name for our apple juice than the Extraordinary John Starkey.”

Doddington Hall: 01522 694308, doddingtonhall.com, LN6 4RU.

Suzannah took over the farm five years ago, but has been involved with the farm ever since she was a young girl.

“If I had done something naughty as a girl, my punishment was picking apples or I would do it to earn myself a bit of pocket money! I would always run up and down the rows of trees as a child and when I was older and at university, my father would send me pages and pages of apple news.”

“I became more and more passionate about it, and as my father started adding value to the apples by creating juices and other products, I decided to join the team.” Suzannah joined five years ago and the apple juice has been in production for roughly 25 years, so it’s over the past five years since Suzannah joined that it has really taken off.

There are now over 60,000 bottles produced every year and sold in Lincolnshire farm shops and the Lincolnshire Co-op. There are over 20 acres of heritage apple orchards and this number is growing.

There are four Bramley apple-based juices, and several others from other fruits grown on the farm. All of the ingredients come from the farm, there is no added sugar, just the sweetness of the Bramley. The farm also produces apple cider vinegar which has an abundance of health benefits, apple compôte which is stocked in a number of Lincolnshire’s butcheries and cider.

There are several products that are currently in development by the team and they will be very different to the current portfolio of products, so watch this space.

When I asked Suzannah what the secret was, she said that there isn’t one. The Bramley apples grown at Norwood Park take full credit for the juice produced here. The only thing Suzannah does differently is leave the fruit to grow on the tree for a lot longer than usual.

“Because my apples are picked when they are fully mature, they have soaked up more weeks of sunshine and absorbed more goodness from the Southwell keuper marl clay, which is characteristic of the land where the original Bramley tree still stands,” says Suzannah. “This results in my apples having that perfect 58

Bramley blush, distinctive texture and extraordinary taste. And all without adding anything artificial!”

The success of the juice over the past five years has just soared. It’s stocked across the country, let alone Lincolnshire, and chefs that have a Michelin star are using Suzannah’s fruits and apple juices.

“It’s a perfect drink for a summer’s day and especially good for cocktails or mocktails, which is why it’s chosen by some of the best bars in the country.” n Buy online here www.starkeysfruit.co.uk or at local stockists.

ELIXIR

BATHROOMS

It has been a busy year so far at Elixir Bathrooms in Lincoln. The team has just celebrated 18 years since opening the doors at Elixir at the Pelham Centre in Lincoln and they are still very proud to be an independent family run business...

You will have seen Elixir Bathrooms many times on entering Lincoln via the A15, but perhaps you’ve never experienced the incredible showroom it has to offer. The family-run bathroom company celebrates 18 years at the entrance to the city. “We have seen lots of changes within the industry over the 18 years we’ve been here,” says Sue, Managing Director. “The main one has been the increase of online sales which we have always steered away from, for lots of reasons. We have customers comparing our products to different products you can buy online but we are always keen to stress that when you buy online, you are left out on a limb, you have no service, back up or guarantees, and when something goes wrong you have no access to spare parts.”

“All the suppliers we deal with are reputable, high end manufacturers who offer good guarantees, service and back up. For example one of our tap and shower suppliers offers a 12 year guarantee; we can get replacement parts overnight. We had a customer in this week who purchased a basin tap from us 10 years ago. She had no receipt but we traced what the product was and the replacement part came overnight free of charge.” “We have also seen an increase in our customers wanting the whole package; all project managed and supplied by one company. 72

We do everything from plumbing, joinery, plastering, tiling and electrics and unlike most other showrooms we do it all ourselves. The customer only pays Elixir Bathrooms, which means their guarantee is with us, nothing to do with the tradesman who installed it. We project manage it and look after the customer from start to finish.” “As we move into summer we are just starting to promote our One Day Sale Spectacular on Saturday 30th June, where we are taking 20% off everything for any orders placed on that day. We are lucky that most of our suppliers we have dealt with for many years support us with extra discount for this day.”

“It is also a bit of fun, the showroom is usually heaving and we have the bubbly flowing! We’ll see you there!”

RELAX &

UNWIND ELIXIR BATHROOMS IS ALSO OFFERING BATH BOMBS AND SOAPS TO INDULGE IN YOUR NEW BATHROOM...

“Moving forward this year we have just introduced a new range of sumptuous bath products which we feel compliment our luxury bathrooms,” says Sue. “The range is from the popular brand Bomb Cosmetics and includes indulgent candles, bath bombs and luxurious bath mallows which are all packed full of essential oils and goodness for your skin.” “We have a large stand stocking a massive range within our showroom. We are finding that once the customer has their new room installed, they want to wind down and relax in indulgent bath and shower products.” “We also have lovely gift boxes which make great presents. Bath bombs are £2.90 or four for £10 and candles are £7 each and the gift boxes are £15 which have five or six items inside.” “And don’t forget we have free parking right outside the door making it easy to just nip in and pick up that gift or an indulgent treat for yourself!”

A Take on Tradition

COLEFAX & FOWLER HAS JUST RELEASED THE LATEST SUMMER COLLECTION FEATURING BOLD BLUSH TONES, FLORAL PATTERNS AND BLUE HUES CONTRASTING WITH SOFTER SHADES OF IVORY...

HONEYSUCKLE GARDEN One of our favourite patterns and fabrics from this new collection is ‘Honeysuckle Garden’ featured here on the blind in old blue, with a ‘Seaweed’ pattern rolled up underneath.

n Colefax & Fowler’s latest collection is inspired by blossom, so greenery goes hand in hand with that style. The curtains and cushions you see here are in ‘Eloise’ in ivory and green, and the

smaller longer cushion is in the pattern ‘Seaweed’ in leaf colour. This against the ‘Carine’ ivory fabric adds just a touch of colour to make a room feel fresh, simple and light.

n Green and grey chintz are very classic French/Mediterranean colours and Colefax & Fowler’s ‘Bowood’ pattern gives the impression of a well styled villa on the Côte d’Azur.

n From ‘Osmunda’ to ‘Valora’ to ‘Lavinia,’ Colefax & Fowler’s latest collection has a wealth of original patterns. 76

Luxury

Interiors

‘Constance’ is a very boldly styled fabric, but it makes plainer styles like ‘Seaweed’ and ‘Eaton Plain,’ the back cushion, stand out in their simplicity and exaggerate the bolder Constance.

FRENSHAM

The chair to the right is also the ‘Constance’ pattern but in grey.

The curtains you see here are in ‘Frensham’ carrying a fern leaf pattern in beige. The checked cushioned chairs are ‘Malone Check’ in shades of brown and sienna. For an interior design of class, the Malone Check is certainly a mark of quality.

A bolder floral style, ‘Constance’ in an old pink dusty shade will really stand out and add an element of class and tradition to any room. Paired with the chair’s red and green ‘Mereworth’ fabric, you’ll have a country inspired home with a quality style. n Featured furniture items are available from Colefax & Fowler. Please visit the website www.colefax.com to purchase any of the items here and to view other options to make your home traditional yet stylish. 77

Bringing the INSIDE OUTSIDE

If you’ve plenty of space outdoors but you’re reticent to spend money on it, you’re losing the money you pay for your home by wasting the space. Create somewhere you can enjoy outside as an extension to your home and invest in good quality furniture and outdoor areas. Lincolnshire has premium suppliers and fitters perfect for the job... 80

Outdoor seating, patios, decking, tiling and even outdoor kitchens are well worth the investment. If you have a lot of land, or perhaps a small garden that’s left to lawn, it’s definitely worth investing in.

If you don’t use your garden, it’s wasted space that you’re paying for; just as much as your kitchen, dining room or lounge. Making an enjoyable space outside allows you to have space to enjoy the sun, host enviable parties and enjoy a barbecue with the family is definitely worth it, and it creates an area you’re proud to show guests but one that’s also used too.

Luckily, our area has some of the best suppliers to do the job from fitting to the finishing touches.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE

The Benefits of an

OUTDOOR

KITCHEN

SEVERAL REASONS WHY YOU WILL BENEFIT FROM FITTING AN OUTDOOR KITCHEN IN YOUR HOME AND GARDEN...

First of all, for stunning outdoor furniture, we are spoilt for choice. We recommend Oldrids & Downtown’s Grantham garden centre (01476 512333, www.oldrids.co.uk), the Sack Store in Boston for garden accessories (01205 310101, www.sackstore.co.uk), Johnsons Garden Centre also based in Boston (01205 363408, www.johnsonsofboston.co.uk) and in Spalding, Springfields has plenty to offer (01775 760909, www.springfields.co.uk).

If you’re based closer to the east coast, try Lyndhurst Garden Centre in Skegness (01754 810295, www.lyndhurstgardencentre.co.uk).

It’s well worth visiting any of the suppliers above to browse a wide range of outdoor furniture and garden accessories, and all offer a café, perfect for a slice of cake and a cup of tea in the afternoon too.

You might be interested in something a little more permanent like an outdoor kitchen, barbecue station or decking area.

It’s great to have a space to entertain outside, and if your garden necessitates an area for this, and has the space available, go for it. It may just be a pizza oven, built in fire pit, outdoor stove or cabinetry outdoors, but either way, it looks impressive in any garden and it’s practical too.

The area has some fabulous kitchen fitters and cabinet makers who would be more than willing to see if they can fit an outdoor kitchen at your home. Try our recommended garden centres to accessorise your outdoor space and visit their websites for more information. n

Outdoor kitchens may seem like a luxury for your home, but they’re actually a really practical space. First of all, it keeps the smell of what you’re cooking outdoors so your home remains fragrant during the summer months. It’s also ideal for entertaining. Often, preparing an outdoor meal with guests means you have to excuse yourselves from the party to continue the preparation. With an outdoor kitchen, you can entertain and talk to your guests while cooking outside in the sun. In summer, an indoor kitchen can also affect your energy bills. The heat from the oven and stove, especially if you’ve an Aga, heats the house up which is perfect for winter but not so ideal for summer, especially if you happen to have air conditioning fitted throughout. Either way, if you’re going to opt for an entire outdoor kitchen or just a pizza oven, weigh up the practicalities of each and how often you would use it. It’s a big investment but worth it if you want an outdoor space to entertain in and enjoy. n For more information on fitting an outdoor kitchen in your home, call any of our kitchen and interiors advertisers.

Alison Pratt, NFU On The Farm with...

Alison Pratt, Communications Manager for NFU East Midlands, discusses the delights of summer and therefore salads, as she focuses on how the crops are grown in the UK... Now that summer is officially here and we can put the dark days of winter and the ‘Beast from the East’ firmly behind us, our thoughts can turn to the delights of salads.

ON THE FARM THIS MONTH:

Of course we can enjoy salads any day of the year; global trade and chilled food transport mean that lettuce and other salad leaves, tomatoes, cucumbers, spring onions and all the other wonderful salad ingredients, can be shipped to our shores within hours. But we grow a considerable amount of salad here in the UK. Our growers produce lettuce and spring onions, spinach and celery, carrots, herbs and watercress, and much, more. You could say that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Growing lettuce and other salad leaves is an exact science. The seeds that will one day be a Little Gem, Lollo Rosso or Romaine lettuce, are not planted straight into the field; first they’re sown in individual modules and germinated under glass by specialist growers called plant raisers. About three weeks later, the tender plants are ready to be planted into the carefully prepared soil.

At this point, satellite technology comes into play; the precision planters that carefully place the seedling into the ground are not steered by human hand. This ensures that the rows the plants are planted in are as straight as they can be, so that when it comes to harvest time, the harvester can be satellite guided too.

Baby leaf salads are generally harvested by a machine, but ‘wholehead’ varieties such as Iceberg or Cos, are cut and wrapped by hand. Each product is hand-picked by a skilled crew of harvest workers, making sure that the product conforms to the customers’ specifications of size, weight, appearance and maturity. The product is transferred to the harvesting ‘rig’ where it is graded and put into boxes before being sent for cooling.

When baby leaf salad varieties are ready for harvesting, highly specialised harvesting machines cut up to two to three tonnes of leaves an hour. The leaves are then

transferred to highly sophisticated pack houses, located close to the farms so within hours, the plants have been chilled, and packed into ‘washed and ready to eat’ bags. As you can imagine, the production process is very labour intensive; robots can’t yet tell a quality lettuce from one that isn’t ready to pick, so the human hand and eye are still in demand. And once the produce is at the packhouse, quality control is everything; again the human brain cannot be beaten. But the machine age is upon us as the satellite guided planters and harvesters at the start of this process show. Perhaps one day soon there will be a robot clever enough to pick and pack our little gems! n

Arable Sector: In the arable sector, July is largely about hay making and silaging, but potatoes are irrigated to encourage growth. Livestock Sector: Cows are mated in July for calving in spring. Calves born in the previous spring are de-horned. Sheep are sheared if they haven’t been already, and routine sheep work is carried out

DODDINGTON HALL & GARDENS

TOPIARY &

Enchantment

‘One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.’ The wise words of Shakespeare have never been more relatable when strolling the beautiful gardens of Doddington Hall. It’s a busy time for Doddington in July with the annual sculpture exhibition and next month, Shakespeare’s presence really will be felt as the Globe Theatre performs on the croquet lawn... Words & Images: Tilly Wilkinson.

“The tapestry of box-edged parterre in the west garden filled with irises in early summer, is designed to the same high standard as the perfectly pruned guarding unicorns in the formal walled Elizabethan east garden...”

Capability Brown, the famed 18th century landscape architect, transformed hundreds of stately home gardens up and down the country in the 1700s. There’s no denying his work is beautiful, providing the onlooker with moving hills and flowing lakes to gaze upon, taking inspiration from the natural world. However, Brown’s unprecedented demand across Britain meant that many of the styles and designs of gardens before his time, deemed unfashionable, were lost.

It is thanks to Sir John Delaval, and his distaste for Brown’s style, that the gardens surrounding his property Doddington Hall were kept to their original design, and remain so today.

If you haven’t already had the pleasure of strolling the gardens surrounding Doddington Hall just outside of Lincoln, you’re in for a mighty surprise. It’s truly magical and incorporates so many different elements of horticulture and landscape design. David Logan has been Head Gardener at Doddington for five years now, with a history in and a passion for conservation in other stately homes across the country. “Doddington was a very appealing prospect for me,” says David. “Especially because the owners of the Hall have such a strong ethos in sustainability. They have adapted with the times and ensured their family home will pay for itself.”

Doddington benefits from a café, restaurant, farm shop, home store, holiday cottages, bike shop and country clothing store, in addition to hosting weddings and events. It’s diverse in its offerings which is reflected in the gardens too.

There is a two acre walled kitchen garden providing the fruit and vegetables for the farm shop and restaurant. All the food produced is organic, and cutting flowers for a local florist are grown here too. 90

Doddington has a formal walled east front Elizabethan courtyard, featuring formal topiary and lawns. It’s worth noting that the topiary is rather original in the way it’s styled in the shape of unicorns! “The formal walled garden used to consist of four enormous cedar trees and they made the house look gothic and perhaps haunted!” says David. “These were removed and a formal Elizabethan garden reinstated.”

The walled west garden to the rear of Doddington Hall is very different in design. Here, you will find a tapestry of box-edged parterre to the same standard as the perfectly pruned guarding unicorns to the east full of irises in early summer. You can also see wide bursting borders, wisteria-coated walls, bright beds encompassing water features and iron gates opening to the rest of the 18-acre estate, giving a panoramic view of countryside and Doddington’s pyramid, a unique structure home to owls.

We haven’t even reached the best part about these beautiful gardens yet. What is most enchanting about Doddington Hall’s estate is the wild garden.

Above: The west garden’s iron gates give the Hall views of the owl pyramid.

Right: The ancient twisted chestnut trees. David Logan head gardener at the Hall. The kitchen garden below. Doddington’s guarding unicorns in the east walled garden! The very colourful herbaceous borders opposite Doddington’s croquet lawn.

Just beyond the croquet lawn and cherry tree walk filled with blossom in spring, you will be surrounded by woodland, greeted first of all by the two enormous ancient chestnut trees.

Their contorted branches have replanted and new trees are growing from them, and the width of its trunk is the fifth largest in Britain. The woodland floor beneath is buzzing with bees and butterflies, and leads to further woodland via meandering pathways. On our visit, we were greeted with sweet smelling Rhododendron, filling a large section of the wild garden. There’s also a turf maze made in the 1980s deeper into the wild garden, and the Temple of the Winds that looks over the Lincoln Red cattle that once had free reign over the wild gardens.

92

The most recent introduction David has made to the garden is the water garden. This is hidden in the wild garden also, and makes use of a running stream filling a pond. He’s surrounded the trickling stream with water-based plants and little bridges, adding to the impression the wild garden gives of an enchanted woodland in a fairytale. July is a very busy month for Doddington (and its gardeners). The annual sculpture exhibition is returning, so expect to see hundreds of unique displays from artists across the world from the 28th July. A unique ceramics display is new for 2018 too.

Doddington Hall ticks every horticultural box so enjoy a visit this month, browse the sculptures that are on offer and finish your visit with coffee and cake in the café too!

Doddington Hall & Gardens Calendar Sculptures at Doddington From 28th July to 9th September, enjoy the works of 75 national and international sculptors and 50 ceramicists. WEDDINGS

A Horse, a Funfair... and a

Great Country Wedding! The stunning wedding of Kelly Davies and Fergus Hetherington featured the couple’s terrier Mildred, the bride’s horse Darby, plus an entire funfair with fast rides and dodgem cars... this was most definitely a country wedding to remember! Photographer: Georgi Mabee, 07738 053068 or see www.georgimabee.com.

If ever there was a more relaxed bride it was Kelly Davies. “As long as I had my horse there, I didn’t really mind what else we did,” doesn’t really do justice what looks and sounds like one heck of a wedding.

Kelly is from Stamford; you probably already know her because everyone knows Kelly, she’s usually spotted looking effortlessly stylish with her pooch Mildred in tow or maybe in her family’s shop Dawson of Stamford, perhaps in riding gear in Waitrose or more often than not, having a right laugh with a great group of friends in one of Stamford’s many beer gardens. Kelly met husband Fergus in Mama Liz’s. “I gatecrashed his 30th birthday party and we got chatting,” she says, reminiscing on memories from 2012 when the couple first met. They didn’t know each other before, but things just sort of clicked into place. After many years of fun, holidays, partying and going to lots of their mutual friends’ weddings, Fergus popped the question.

“We were on holiday in Spain in June 2016, just heading down to the beach bar like we normally do when Fergus wanted to walk a different way,” says Kelly. “I didn’t really catch on so in the end he pretended to have something stuck in his foot and got down on one knee,” Kelly still not quite convinced he was being serious. “It took a few minutes for me to realise; ‘he’s actually asking me to marry him!’” Kelly said yes and with friends joining them a couple of days later, they celebrated in sunny Spain.

When it came to wedding planning Kelly decided she wanted to try and throw a party rather than stick to the conventional wedding day that she’d experienced so many

times before. “I originally wanted to have the wedding at our home in Spain,” she says, but technically it was going to be a little difficult to get everyone over there so they thought they’d stick to Stamford with the help of Jack from Pretty Quirky Hire.

Kelly and Fergus got married at All Saint’s Church in Red Lion Square before heading to her aunty’s farm, Langham Lodge, for the celebrations. “It was so generous of Caroline and Andre to have us at their farm, part of the food we served was their very own Langham Lamb which people can actually buy for themselves now.” They made the most of all the space and got the barns dressed up as well as hiring a marquee from a local supplier. “We wanted to have plenty of cover in case the British weather didn’t pull through for us on the day,” says Kelly. “Fergus and my mum were great throughout the wedding planning!”

Fortunately, the weather forecast was accurate and they were lucky to have plenty of sunshine on the day. “We ended up booking a few extra fair rides as the sun was shining,” the amazing fun rides actually came from Taylor’s Fun Fairs and they had everything from ferris wheels to dodgems for weddings guests to play on. “We wanted it to be a party, eat what you want, drink what you want,” says Kelly, and so they provided pizza from the Rustic Crust, Paella by Antonio, Crêpes from The Old Manor House Bakery and Alex’s from The Wine Bar sorted everything from Pimm’s in jugs to a fully functioning bar. Kelly was wearing a dress from Martin Charles, a bridal gallery in Oundle, “Martin was really good with me throughout, I had a bit of a panic two weeks before the wedding!”

1 - Lincs Pride JUL 192.qxp 05/06/2018 14:34 Page 98

- WEDDINGS -

“I always dreamed of riding my horse to church in my wedding dress,” says Kelly, and so she did!

This panic led to Kelly choosing three separate dresses, there was the initial wedding dress, a design by Karen Willis-Holmes that she wore with a skirt attachment for the ceremony. Then she deconstructed slightly to ride her horse Darby at Langham Lodge to get the party started and she ended up in a gorgeous two piece that Martin Charles made himself.

The look was completed with make up by the talented Kiss & Makeup and of course, the stunning jewellery was all from Dawson of Stamford, including the tiara and the couple’s wedding rings.

The horse photos, shot beautifully by Georgi Mabee capture possibly Kelly’s favourite part of the day. Thanks to local event rider Richard Jones, Darby himself had been very well-prepared for the event and his flower garland was created by Lisa Wiles from Keepers of Yaxley. “I’d never dreamed of a big white wedding when I was a little girl, but I had always wanted to ride my horse in a dress on the day.” See, dreams can come true.

The first dance was to a Drake song that had been remixed slightly so that Kings Cliffe’s celebrity rock stars, Fenech Soler, could do the song justice.

They played for the start of the evening and then local band The Salvation took over. “It goes so quickly,” says Kelly. “If I could offer anyone advice it would be to take in every minute, from the very start to the end because it just goes by in a blur.” For their honeymoon, Kelly and Fergus went to relax in Santorini via a stop off at the very quirky Crazy Bear Restaurant and Hotel in High Wycombe. n 98

LINCOLN WELCOMES NEW CHOCOLATIER

LINCOLN Well know national chocolatier Hotel Chocolat is hitting Lincoln’s High Street. Specialising in delicious luxury chocolate and ice cream, the shop has finally opened at the former Ernest Jones jewellers opposite Primark after weeks of anticipation.

The Lincoln store is one of a select number of Hotel Chocolat’s in the UK to offer up the new ‘Ice Cream of the Gods.’ Weird and wonderful products such as gin and ale drinks made with cocoa pulp and even beauty products will be here.

A New Hotel for Lincoln

AN ENORMOUS 63-BEDROOM HOTEL IS CURRENTLY BEING PLANNED TO BE BUILT IN THE CENTRE OF LINCOLN TO HELP PROMOTE TOURISM IN THE AREA AND TO SUPPORT BUSY EVENTS LIKE THE LINCOLN CHRISTMAS MARKET...

The Finest Tea Room in Britain in Lincoln... LINCOLN An Edwardian tea room in the centre of Lincoln has been praised for taking their customers on a trip back in time, recently being named one of the finest tea rooms in Britain. Lady Rose's Edwardian Tea Room on Free School Lane was nominated by customers and readers of This England magazine due to the fully immersive experience of the Edwardian period it offers. Tea is served as close to the same way as in the great houses of the Edwardian era and the tea room was inspired by the TV series Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs. “It's just amazing, we just want to give people a beautiful experience of the Edwardian period,” says owner Nikki Fairey. “It's the full package, beautiful china, tea pots and the setting. We also wear full costume and people just have really beautiful things around them whilst they are enjoying their tea. When people walk in they say 'wow' and want to take photos and look at everything we have.”

LINCOLN A giant 63-bedroom hotel and restaurant will be built in the heart of Lincoln after councillors have finally given the property plans the green light. The development will see the towering building constructed at 27-29 Clasketgate, between the New Theatre Royal and Danesgate. “I think that this is definitely an improvement on the building,” says councillor Chris Burke. “It is also commercially viable and would help bring increased tourism when we need it. There is a deficit in hotels and it would help visitors who want to come to events such as the busy Lincoln Christmas Market.”

JCH: The Perfect Solution to

WEALTH MANAGEMENT Entrust jch: wealth management to provide stewardship of your finances. The company celebrates its 10th year in 2018, and Chief Executive Officer John credits this to putting clients’ needs at the very heart of the business... Words: Tilly Wilkinson.

1 - Lincs Pride JUL 192.qxp 05/06/2018 14:35 Page 115

John Hebblethwaite has a passion for making clients’ money work for them. As his companies celebrate their 10th anniversary, that love of helping people realise their dreams and aspirations has not diminished. “We get a great deal of satisfaction from helping clients achieve their life goals, whether it’s ensuring they can put their children through university or enabling them to completely change their lifestyle,” said John, Chief Executive Officer.

Putting clients’ needs first sits at the heart of the business, which, fundamentally, provides face-to-face investment, pension and financial planning advice.

The company, based at 1 Henley Way, Lincoln, now looks after tens of millions of pounds for very satisfied clients and its development over the last decade reflects the ethos of rational and balanced growth that it nurtures for them. Working with families, companies, trusts, charities and pension schemes John set up jch: after operating as Managing Director for the Lincolnshire arm of an international financial company.

“Over the years I had gained a great deal of experience in the sector and thought the time was right to set up an independent investment management company,” says John, who is both a Certified Chartered Financial Planner and a Chartered Wealth Manager.

“We knew how we wanted to develop the business; that was, and still is, through building strong and lasting relationships with our clients.” Nikki Johnson, Cat Hall and Alan Willmont joined John in the new venture, who helped direct the business focus on exceptional client service and the best possible financial planning.

That focus has been maintained as the team has grown to include specialists with an abundance of financial planning experience and skills, which are used to provide clients with quantifiable benefits. “Our people are definitely our biggest asset and building the right team has been pivotal to our growth. Our strategy has not been to just grow the team and get as many clients in as possible, because if you have thousands of clients you can’t look after them properly.”

“OUR PEOPLE ARE DEFINITELY OUR BIGGEST ASSET AND BUILDING THE RIGHT TEAM HAS BEEN PIVOTAL TO OUR GROWTH. THEY MAKE CLIENTS FUTURE PROSPERITY SECURE...” Above: The jch: office at 1 Henley Way in Lincoln.

Above/Right: Look out for the sign along Henley Way.

Left: The team is jch: investment management’s biggest asset.

“It’s all about getting the balance right. We’re happy that we now have the right people who have the ethos and integrity to make our clients feel their future prosperity is secure. It’s a really great team.”

The jch: team typically help clients whose financial portfolio is more than £250,000 start to achieve financial independence and future proofing existing wealth once it has been accumulated.

“Everyone’s circumstances are different, so it is vital we get to know our clients so we can help them make the right choices,” said John. The company’s independent status means it can advise clients about products and services across the whole financial sector ensuring these are bespoke to their needs.

Working with clients’ other professional advisers such as solicitors and accountants is also integral to effective stewardship of their financial plans. Investments may be central to any future proofing of wealth, but they can make people nervous as it is difficult to predict how they will perform, but jch: has many longstanding happy clients who have entrusted their wealth through some very difficult stock market corrections which has helped them sleep easy, achieve their life goals and help family members or employees. n For more information, call 01522 697310 or visit www.jchim.co.uk and www.jchpm.co.uk.

SUVs RISE OF THE SUPER

Those who are silly enough deem a Range Rover too cheap, small or too modest need worry no longer. As part of a new generation of super-sports utility vehicles or SUVs, a unlikely marque enters the fray...

Rolls Royce Cullinan 6.75 litre V12, on sale now

£250,000 est

In the unlikely - yet highly desirable - scenario that an eccentric wealthy benefactor were to hand me a blank cheque, and instruct me that I may only spend the product of his benevolence on a car, I’d hop, skip and jump to my nearest Land Rover dealership and choose a Range Rover.

Probably not one of the long wheelbase versions, or the supercharged SV, but the Autobiography version, perhaps with a 3.0V6 engine. Why? I honestly can’t think of a better car. It’s as luxurious as a limo, as quick as you need a car to be, it can go anywhere off-road, it has masses of room and plenty of standard kit. I just can’t see that there will ever be a car nicer or better than a Range Rover.

Many who can afford, say, a £200,000 Rolls Royce Ghost still prefer the cheaper, but arguably less show-offy and more practical Range Rover. But what if there was a ‘Rolls Royce Range Rover?’ Something practical, but über-expensive and even more exclusive? Well now there is. It’s called the Cullinan. >> 120

Here come the Super SUVs (and they’re super expensive!):

Lamborghini Urus £165,000: When Porsche launched its Cayenne 4x4, the motoring world collectively gulped at what was seen as an odd paradigm shift. A sports car maker, traditionally known for coupés and convertibles making an SUV? If that wasn’t strange enough now Lamborghini is doing the same with its Urus. 4.0V8 engine, eight speed auto gearbox, four wheel drive and 60mph reached in just 3.6 seconds. Coupé SUV looks give way to a four seater cabin, and it’s all styled like a fighter jet. Odd and a bit macho, but certainly distinctive. n

Mercedes Maybach £200.000 (est): Whilst the Cullinan has been confirmed for release this autumn, a rival from Mercedes’s luxury brand Maybach is still at the concept stage. It’s a strange SUV with a stubby saloon style boot, an all-electric four wheel drive car with a 311 mile range and a doubtless a price tag to match. It’ll sit on the same floorpan chassis as Mercedes’s forthcoming Range Rover rival, the GLS... although that model won’t have flowers in the back, or a little tea set as the Maybach does. n

>> The motoring world scoffed when Porsche, a sports car manufacturer, built an SUV; the Cayenne. They’re not laughing now, as it has been a runaway success. Now that Rolls Royce has announced a 4x4 there’s the same raised eyebrows, but what we have here is a car that can join the fray as a new band of super-SUVs take on the most expensive Range Rovers, including the firm’s forthcoming coupé version, and the likes of Bentley’s Bentayga.

Bentley Bentayga 6.0 W12 £162,700: A more modest Bentayga V8 and a Bentayga diesel are available, but in the above company, £160,000 for an SUV looks like a snip. Audi mechanicals and plenty of options for customisation go some way to justifying its price tag, but we still have a lingering doubt that this is a more luxurious or more prestigious car than a Range Rover Autobiography, rather than just a car for show offs. n

122

The Cullinan is named after the world’s most expensive flawless diamond. It’s 5.3m long, 2.1m wide and 1.8m tall; longer than a Range Rover by 30cm and 15cm wider. It weighs in at 2,660kg, and has an eight speed automatic gearbox, four wheel drive, four wheel steering and a 48v electrical system.

1 - Lincs Pride JUL 192.qxp 05/06/2018 14:37 Page 123

“One has to wonder who, beyond a hip hop rapper or footballer, is going to buy such an excessive and pretentious car as this...” Electronics scan the road in front and prime the air suspension and dampers to compensate for the road ahead. And rather than Land Rover’s terrain response system, the company has fitted Cullinan with a button understatedly marked ‘everywhere’ which primes the car for the rough stuff that Rolls insists the car will handle with aplomb. Modest versions are likely to start at £250,000 but the wildest and most bespoke versions are expected to top £400,000, with options including picnic seats in the boot, cocktail bars in the back and a ‘recreation

module’ - a power operated shelf for, one presumes, shotguns, fly fishing kit, picnics and so on. The V12 engine is huge, although we wouldn’t bet against a V8 or electrification being made before long. Doubtless it’s a flawless car, but being so huge, so expensive and so conspicuous one has to wonder who, beyond a hip hop rapper or a young footballer is going to buy such an excessive and pretentious car. Nice, but I’ll stick to a Range Rover... at least, I will as soon as that eccentric benefactor comes into my life. n

ROLLS ROYCE CULLINAN V12 Price: £250,000, available now. Engine: 6.75 litre V12, 48v, 571hp. Drivetrain: Eight speed auto gearbox, four wheel drive. Performance: 0-60mph 4-5 seconds (est); 155mph top speed. Economy: 18.8mpg combined. Equipment: Heated armrests, top view camera, adaptive cruise, night vision, WiFi hotspot. n 123

BMW prepares for GT battle with all new 8-series model... BMW BMW is readying a flagship internal combustion engine coupé, badged the 8-Series, which will launch early in 2018. The car is currently undergoing final stage testing, and will initially be sold as an M850i xDrive Coupé which will channel a V8 engine, probably displacing between 4.0 and 4.4 litres, through an eight speed automatic gearbox and all wheel drive. The GT cruiser will compete against Jaguar’s F-Type and Mercedes’s SL but will prioritise GT comfort over the less forgiving performance of, for instance, a Porsche 911 GT series. Expect prices close to six figures for flagship versions. n

Aston’s Ad-Vantage BABY ASTON MARTIN RELAUNCHES, LURID PAINT JOB IS OPTIONAL...!

ASTON MARTIN Aston Martin has revealed its new Vantage, its most modest sports car, with the least modest paint job we’ve ever seen. Buyers can, of course, specify a slightly less conspicuous paint job, but where’s the fun in that? Besides, the car’s 4.0 V8 twin turbocharged engine is hardly an exercise in modesty, so why feign subtlety?

Mercedes Four Seat AMG FOUR DOOR SPORTS CAR TAKES THE FIGHT TO PANAMERA

124

The driving position is lower than ever, and 60mph is reached and breached in an impressive 3.6 seconds, with a track day speed of 195mph. The cars cabin has been updated, too, with a more modern infotainment system and switchgear borrowed from Mercedes Benz. The updated Vantage is available now from £120,000 before a long list of options. n MERCEDES Seemingly jealous of the success of Porsche’s Panamera, Mercedes is hitting back with the imminent launch of its AMG GT, a four door, four seater saloon with the throbbing AMG heart of its most powerful sports car. Six cylinder and eight cylinder engines provide anything up to 639hp and an AMG GT53 will follow with blistering performance. Sporting prowess rather than practicality is the order of the day, with fade-free brakes, speedsensitive steering and active rear wheel steering. The car is on sale from this month, expect to pay £80-£150,000. n

GOLF TIPS

Jordan Wrisdale’s PROFESSIONAL GOLFER

TIPS & TRICKS

One of the biggest challenges in golf is getting a ball out of a bunker as many of you who play will know all too well. Professional golfer Jordan Wrisdale gives his tips on how to make the shot a little easier...

“This is one of the main problems golfers tend to have and they often approach me on the subject,” says Jordan. “It becomes a lot easier when following these simple steps.” “First of all, before preparing for the shot at all, make sure you’re using the right club. If you short-side yourself in a greenside bunker, meaning you don’t have a lot of green to work with, you want to pick a high-lofted wedge, like a 60º lob wedge. The ball will not role out as much.” “If you have some green to work with, you want a lower lofted wedge, such as a sand wedge (56 degrees) or a gap wedge (52 degrees). This will promote a slightly longer ball flight out of the trap.”

“Once you have the right club for you, you can focus on getting the swing right.”

Stance: Stand square to your intended line, then turn your leading foot out to roughly 45 degrees. This will help to turn onto your left side facing the target. Sand wedge: Open your sand wedge or a club you feel most comfortable with until the leading edge is in line with your front foot. This will help elevate the ball.

Sand: Never hit the ball, always hit the sand. Aim to be striking the sand around two golf balls behind your golf ball for a lower running bunker shot but for a higher soft landing, strike Renovation around one ball behind. Ball: The ball always wants to be on the heel of your leading foot. For example,

Bunker Rules

There are strict guidelines for bunker sand, especially in the States. Particles must lie between 0.25 and 1mm, and be angular in shape.

a right handed player’s golf ball’s position will want to be on your left heel.

This will shallow your attack angle and stop you from digging into the sand. This way you will be able to get the ball out of the bunker successfully.

“It’s always a tricky shot to master, but if you follow my simple instructions on hitting a ball out of a bunker, you can’t go wrong.”

Next time you find yourself stuck in a rut or a bunker - in a game of golf, remember your positioning and always pick the best club. Left: Remember, focus on throwing the sand out of the bunker with your club rather than hitting the ball. The golf ball will eventually follow with the shot.
