In the magazine world, time is a funny thing. Despite looking ahead to February, we write this in the weekend following Lincoln’s Christmas Market.

It was a successful event with 250,000 visitors enjoying 280 stalls, live entertainment, and a festive atmosphere designed to generate £10m revenue for local businesses.

The city’s successful ice rink was another successful attraction, and proved Lincoln’s worth as a small but thriving city. Congratulations to all who helped the city maintain its reputation as a destination to enjoy the very best shopping, dining and pre-Christmas entertainment.

In this edition, we meet Lulu, who comes to Grantham next month, and find out how Wendy Else of Great Hale is utilising a new technique to produce vibrant, beautiful floral artwork.

Elsewhere, we enjoy the thrill of point-to-point steeplechase racing with the South Wold Hunt and to keep you warm whilst you’re watching the races, we’ve winter clothing from Brigg’s Thomas Bell.

County News Celebrating Grantham’s Heritage on Town’s Signs How should South Kesteven town’s heritage be celebrated on welcome signage greeting visitors?

‘Curtain Up’ in spring for East Coast’s Al Fresco Theatre... Chapel St Leonards will this month see the finishing touches added to a new open air amphitheatre for community events and live performances.

The Pullover was wasteland until Lincolnshire County Council partnered with Coffey Construction to transform the site into a three-tiered area with new surfacing and furniture, which the local community will be able to use.

Colin Davie, from the council’s economic regeneration department says the Pullover will become a ‘fantastic new space. for the local community.’

Grantham’s heritage is the subject of great debate this month, as the town decides how to welcome visitors into the district. Grantham North councillor Ray Wootten wants to create four signs on each major entrance to the town, celebrating its most famous residents. In addition to broadcaster Nicholas Parsons, the first warranted female police officer, Edith Smith and Isaac Newton, the councillor suggested identifying the town as the birthplace of Margaret Thatcher. This is an association which has polarised opinion between those who appreciated her politics, and those who considered her a destructive influence in British history.

New Owners Secure Future of Lincoln Care Homes Future of three Lincolnshire care homes has been secured after they were transferred to specialist care provider Country Court Care...

Labour councillors in the town have already reacted with displeasure at the proposal to name a relief road around the town after the former prime minister. “Throughout history Grantham has been the home of many famous people and events. A number of towns have taken advantage of this and produced entry signs which promote their towns’ past,” says Ray, also chairman of South Kesteven District Council. In addition to recognising Grantham’s four famous residents, Ray also suggested that Sir Isaac Newton’s school and the heritage of the Machine Gun Corps and Ruston & Hornsby could also be acknowledged. The future of Lincoln care homes Eccleshare Court near Hartsholme Country Park, Ruckland Court in north Lincoln and Neale Court in North Hykeham is now secure after ownership of them was transferred to a new operator, Country Court Care. “Our strategy means that we are committed to a continued investment of £20m over the coming five years, in the care sector,” says Alykhan Kachra, Managing Director of Country Court Care.

“It also means Country Court Care is a major employer in Lincolnshire, employing over 700 staff and owning 16 other care homes with a total of over 700 beds.” n For more information on the company, and its care homes, see www.countrycourtcare.com.

Jesus Christ Returns to Lincoln Cathedral... Performance of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar will enjoy performances in August, with tickets on sale now

Tower of London Poppy Installation comes to Lincoln Castle in May... City is one of just three venues in the UK to host ‘travelling’ version of Tower of London installation

Lincoln Castle will be one of just three venues across the UK to host the iconic ceramic poppies seen at HM Tower of London in 2014. Wave and Weeping Willow will be seen at Yorkshire Sculpture Park then

Liverpool’s St George’s Hall before reaching the Castle between 28th May and 4th September. The Wave installation at the castle will this year see a sweeping arch of poppies suspended on towering stalks.

Look Who Came to Dinner in Grimsby...! Just before Christmas some wise men turned up at an inn... and dined under a Michelin star, or six! Grimsby chef caters for his fine dining idols... Lincoln Cathedral last month announced that following 2015’s sell out performances, it will once again host Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, in the Cathedral in August.

Last year the Cathedral was delighted to host Jesus Christ Superstar as an amateur production and community event of quite extraordinary proportions. It was the first time the show had been performed in a religious setting.

With a company comprised completely of volunteers, over two hundred local people will once again join together to produce this legendary rock opera; involved in every aspect of performance, on stage and behind the scenes. Director, Ben Poole, has agreed to reprise his role as a volunteer producer and director.

“Last year’s performances were exhilarating and exhausting. The sheer scale of directing a cast and crew of around 200 is a logistical challenge, but we learnt a lot, and the rewards of working with such dedicated people, and the amazing response we had from those who attended the events far outweighed any difficulties.”

Ben went on to say, “It’s about building community, nurturing local talent and bringing a fresh generation of visitors to the city; and raising much needed funds for the Cathedral we love.”

OK, it was Grimsby, not Bethlehem, but when some ‘wise men’ turned up at an Inn recently, Christmas came early for chef Stephen Bennett of Oaklands Hall Hotel.

James Martin, Tom Kerridge, Mark Edwards, Claude Bosi and Galton Blackiston joined a small private party at the hotel for dinner in the hotel’s private dining room, the Long Lounge.

“It’s not often you have a dining room with six Michelin stars to cater for, especially chef ’s that you have spent most of your career looking up to for inspiration. The Chef ’s who dined in The Comfy Duck all live by a very similar ethos, serving local, seasonal food, so it was great to be able to serve up just a bit of what we’re about, and show them how great food ‘up north,’ here in Grimsby can be.”

n The shows will run from 22nd August to 30th August (excluding Sundays). Tickets will go on sale on 14th February 2016. Tickets can only be purchased via the electronic booking system on Lincoln Cathedral’s events booking website at www.lincolncathedral.com.

LULU Relighting Her Fire

This month the iconic 60s pop icon comes to Grantham to perform as part of a new 20-date UK tour. It’s a celebration of a career spanning 50 years which has seen the 67-year old appear in TV, film, and perform her music right into the 21st century... but she’ll have to get over the flu first! Shout! It remains one of the most epochdefining pop songs of the 1960s. Indeed, Lulu herself is an icon of the age and has remained recognisable right into the 21st century. The singer even gained a new audience in the 1990s performing with boy band Take That, and celebrating the fin-de-séicle with a well-earned OBE. More recently, 2015 was a busy year, with an appearance on the Comic Relief Bakeoff in February, a new album in the spring, and during our conversation, a nasty bout of flu which frustrated the artist by forcing the perennially busy 67-year old to rest up.

Words: Rob Davis.

woman down, I’ll be over it in plenty of time for the first date [in Bury St Edmunds].”

Lulu reaches Lincolnshire on Saturday 12th March, when she’ll appear at the Meres Leisure Centre in Grantham... and she couldn’t be more enthusiastic at the prospect.

“Touring is almost like a natural high, and I’m really looking forward to presenting a few new songs from my album as well as a number of classics, so the audience can sing

came up to me and remarked that I left a little something with him, and it’s true, at this stage in my career and in my life I can talk about things and really get to know the audience.”

Along with the classics - Boom Bang a Bang Bang, Shout, Relight my Fire and To Sir with Love, Lulu’s performance will also include a number of songs from her newest album. It’s a unique offering in two respects, not least because it’s the first she’s written herself, in collaboration with brother Billy, but also, because it’s semi-autobiographical in its content.

“I had a violent childhood. There’s no shame, no blame - not now - but I’ve come to terms with the fact that I don’t have to be Little Miss-bloody-Perfect...”

“I just haven’t been able to see the back of it for two weeks now,” Lulu revealed, during an exclusive interview from her London home.

“It’s so frustrating because I’m always busy, I’m incorrigible. I don’t like sitting and doing nothing, and I don’t suffer from tiredness - it’s so frustrating. I don’t like surrendering to it.” Best to get it out of the way in advance of the singer’s forthcoming 20-date tour, though, surely? “Oh you can’t keep a good

10

along. The size of events on the tour is ideal because we can still ensure a large enough audience for a good atmosphere whilst maintaining a sense of intimacy.” “When I go to a gig I want to learn about the person who’s performing, I want to share a connection with them. When I was performing in, I think, Manchester last, I received the best compliment. A member of the audience

“I’ve entered a new phase in my life,” the singer says. “I’ve never talked about it before, but I had a violent childhood. There’s no shame, no blame - not now - but it stunted me, stopped me from emotionally maturing.”

“I was overly responsible for myself from a young age and very soon in my career, I was responsible for the people on the payroll, too, and it put a lot of pressure on me. Now I’ve come to terms with the fact that I don’t have to be Little Miss-bloody-Perfect.”

“At my lowest point I had an emotional breakdown and I’ve now reconciled with myself, but it’s taken some doing. I’ve read every self-help book, meditated since 1984 and digested Eckhart Tolle.”

“I’ve done a lot of work to change the way I do things. I’m more accepting of myself, warts and all, and therefore I’ve become more accepting of people, too. I have to address that every day, though.”

“I’ve a small support group now, which gives me a huge amount of support. I’m not putting on a brave face anymore.

Instead, I’ve learned how to deal with life and feel comfortable with myself.”

Lulu’s album Making Life Rhyme is the artistic reflection of that. “I feel really grateful for the life I’ve had and I hope that’s reflected in the lyrics.”

“I’ve done well to have a career that’s spanned 50 years, but I can still cut it and I can still make a living doing something I really love.”

“I’m touring with a very young but also really talented group. There’s a strong melodic element to the new

songs, and lots of harmonies, which we practice relentlessly - it’s a really joyous blend of music that’s a pleasure to perform and - hopefully - listen to.”

As well as performing her own songs, Lulu will also treat her Grantham audience to songs by her own musical heroes, from Ray Charles to Otis Redding. The singer will be taking her audience on a musical journey, recalling personal anecdotes, her songwriting experiences and other entertaining stories.

“It’s been an exceptionally busy year, from performing at Glastonbury in the summer to releasing my first selfpenned album and touring the UK solo for the first time in 10 years.” “I’ve had so much fun and I’m really looking forward to 2016 being just as busy!”

- LULU -

In addition to writing her own material, Lulu and Billy have been writing collaboratively for other artists, too.

Of course, this year will also see Lulu making another appearance on cinema screens with her role in the Absolutely Fabulous movie. “I’ve done lots of work with Jennifer Saunders, she’s a great friend and everyone on the production team was thrilled to be able to bring it to the big screen. It’s a cult programme, and is still very well-loved. There’s an incredible cast and the film promises to be every bit as appealing as the TV series.” “I can’t give too much away but three members of the cast ended up in the Thames - I got wet, but that’s all I’ll give away.”

“Jennifer’s Edina is my PR, who messes me around a lot, pushes me to the end

of my tether. She’s at her best as I’m at my worst, it’s a great script!”

Speaking to an incredibly relaxed and spirited Lulu - despite her flu - there’s absolutely no doubt that she’s exactly the bubbly, fun-loving and heartwarming star she was in the 60s.

Opposite: Lulu with her band The Luvvers, 1964 and performing (above/left) and with Take That in 1994. Above: Lulu in rehearsals for her 2016 tour.

March’s performance at The Meres will be a chance to see one of British music’s more enduring icons up close, and to get to know her a little better.

“It’s going to be really exciting, a great deal of fun. Come along, have a sing along and let’s enjoy the night together!” n Lulu will perform at Grantham’s Meres Leisure Centre, on Saturday 12th March from 7.30pm. Tickets £35/adults. Call 01476 406158 or see www.guildhallartscentre.com.

The Lincolnshire Suffragette

MARCH MARCH, WOMEN,

THE SUFFRAGETTES FOUGHT FOR MANY THINGS WE TAKE FOR GRANTED TODAY. THIS MONTH, WE REMEMBER THEIR COURAGE WITH THE RELEASE OF A NEW BOOK, 100 YEARS SINCE THE DEATH OF A MARTYR AND JESSIE BOUCHERETT, LINCOLNSHIRE’S OWN HERO...

`There have been some monumental moments in British history, from the World Wars to the Industrial Revolution. These events have affected the way we live our lives dramatically, with a common theme of people disagreeing with society, standing up and fighting for what they feel is right. Author Lucinda Hawksley is spreading the word about the suffragettes in her new book, March, Women, March, the women who stood up and fought for freedom. The Suffragettes were a group of women who stood up for women’s rights - the way women live their lives today is taken for granted. While names like Emily Wilding Davison and Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the women, might come to mind, there are countless other women who stood up against society who have since been forgotten.

One of those powerful and forgotten women was Emilia Jessie Boucherett. She was one of the first ever Suffragettes, born in Market Rasen in 1825. Her father, Ayscogne Boucherett, was the high sherriff of Lincolnshire and she was a cousin of Florence Nightingale. 16

Words: Tilly Wilkinson.

She moved from the county to study in Warwickshire alongside Elizabeth Gaskell a well-known English novelist - in Avonbank.

Jessie bought a copy of the English Woman’s Journal and was so impressed by the contents, that she came to London in 1859 to meet the editors.

Jessie had been concerned at an early age about the exclusion of women from areas of employment and felt the need to act upon it once she’d seen that doing so was possible.

She went on to found the Society of Promoting the Employment of Women in 1859 with the help of Barbara Bodichon and Adelaide Anne Procter, which today operates as the Futures for Women charity.

Jessie went from strength to strength after this, by joining the Langham Place Group with her colleague Adelaide in 1857, promoting the women’s suffrage movement and the Married Women’s Property Act, founding the Englishwoman’s Review in 1866, and founding the Women’s Suffrage Journal with Lydia Becker in 1870.

Various accounts from many women devoted to the cause at the time show that ‘Miss Boucherett was prepared to sell her diamonds in order to provide money to finance the petition campaigns.’ She was very willing to dispose of her wealth for the good of the cause. She was a suffragette with true passion and commitment.

- HISTORY -

A

fter she died of natural causes, Jessie’s estate was assessed at over £39,000. She left this, in her usual style of support and dedication, to the Society of Promoting the Employment of Women, The Freedom of Labour Defence Society, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, the Englishwoman’s Review, Antoinette Mackenzie, Gertrude King, and to Helen Ogle Moore, she left her dog, ‘Rock.’

Without the spirit, passion and courage of women like Jessie Boucherett, we would be living in a very different world and women of the 21st century wouldn’t have the freedom the suffragettes devoted their lives to achieving.

Recently, the hundred year anniversary passed of the death of Emily Wilding Davison. She’s one of the most notable characters of the Women’s Suffrage taking a very active part in standing up for their rights. Emily was jailed on nine occasions and force-fed 49 times. But it’s her death that caught the attention of the nation.

She suffered from fatal injuries as she stepped out in front of King George V’s horse at the Epsom Derby in 1913. It shocked Britain because no one could understand why she would do such a thing. Modern historians believe that, rather than an attempt to kill herself, Emily stepped out in front of the horse to draw attention to the cause, not being averse to risky forms of protests, like starving herself, in the past. Others say Emily stepped out to attach a scarf to the bridle of the King’s horse.

“WITHOUT THE SPIRIT, PASSION AND COURAGE OF WOMEN LIKE JESSIE BOUCHERETT, WE WOULD BE LIVING IN A VERY DIFFERENT WORLD AND WOMEN OF THE 21ST CENTURY WOULDN’T HAVE THE FREEDOM THE SUFFRAGETTES DEVOTED THEIR LIVES TO ACHIEVING...” Either way, thousands of suffragettes accompanied the coffin and tens of thousands of people lined the streets of London. Her coffin was taken to the family grave.

Emily wasn’t the only woman to give her life to the cause. There were many horrible deaths in the early twentieth century. Approximately 1,000 suffragettes were imprisoned in Britain. This was mainly down to public order offences and failures to pay fines.

There were three divisions in prisons of the time and suffragettes were usually placed in the First Division as ‘political prisoners,’ which granted them certain liberties like being able to write books or articles and to receive frequent visits.

Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the suffragettes, campaigned heavily to get imprisoned suffragettes recognised as

18

political prisoners. However, the government saw this as a way for the suffragettes to gain ‘easy martyrdom,’ and saw that they were abusing the privilege of First Division so from then on, Suffragettes were placed in Second and Third Divisions, offering no liberty.

Following this, many suffragettes began to stage hunger strikes in prison. The first woman to refuse food was Marion Wallace Dunlop since she wasn’t given political prisoner status.

She had a 91-hour hunger strike, and for fear of her becoming a martyr of the cause, the Home Secretary made the decision to release her early on medical grounds.

This triggered almost all imprisoned suffragettes to starve themselves and a as a result, they would be released after just a few days and immediately started striking again.

Obviously, authorities couldn’t allow the suffragettes to get away with this so in 1910, home secretary Winston Churchill, decided to amend the rules of the divisions, allowing the Second and Third Divisions to receive some of the privileges the First Division does. This ended the hunger strikes for two years until one suffragette was transferred from the Second to the First Division, inciting other suffragettes to demonstrate regarding their own prison status.

The strikes became much more aggressive and as the British Government didn’t want to release all of the suffragettes simply because they were starving themselves, they started to take on more drastic measures. Many suffragettes were dying of hunger in the prisons and if they did, the prison would then be responsible for the death, so they became a liability.

Therefore, the prison began force feeding the women through a tube, most commonly a nostril or stomach tube. Although it was deemed safe to medical practitioners on sick patients, it was quite unsafe to the healthy suffragettes.

It was a very strenuous process and without the woman’s consent, she was strapped down with a considerable amount of force. It was known to be a very painful experience and many physicians discovered that it had both short-term damage to the circulatory system, digestive system and nervous system and long-term damage to the women’s physical and mental health.

M

any suffragettes who were force fed were known to develop pleurisy or pneumonia because of a misplaced tube.

The women’s dedication and strength to go through this pain and suffering to provide future generations with the liberty we have today is phenomenal.

Many authors, artists, and producers have picked up on this and have dedicated their work to the suffragettes.

Last year saw the release of Suffragette, a story about Maud Watts, a laundress who becomes a suffragette - a fictional

character but based on true events. Meryl Streep plays Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the suffragettes in the film, and Natalie Press plays Emily Wilding Davison.

T

he same activist inspired Lucinda Hawksley to write ‘March, Women, March,’ as it was published to commemorate the centenary of her death.

“It features diary entries, letters, anecdotes and propaganda from both the suffrage and anti-suffrage movements,” says Lucinda, “and traces the long, hard journey by which women in Britain moved from being the property of their fathers and husbands to gaining greater legal recognition and rights and, finally, to becoming enfranchised citizens with full voting rights.”

“I kept encountering incredible women, who had been pivotal to the cause of gender equality, yet whose names were undeservedly forgotten. I wanted to write a book that would bring both them, and their achievements back to the fore.”

COLOUR f o e t t e l a P s ’ e r u t a N

Lincolnshire’s Wendy Else, winner of The Carre Gallery’s Open Exhibition Lincolnshire Pride Award, enjoys painting nature’s palette. Her winning piece, Floral Fantasy, impressed our Editor with a vibrant abstract wash of saturated colour. This month we discover the secret behind the Little Hale artist’s stunning image and the unique method she uses to achieve such powerful colours... It’s our pleasure to each year choose a winning local artist in Sleaford’s Carre Gallery’s Open Exhibition. Last year’s winner was Wendy Else, the Little Hale artist who has discovered a new way to commit nature’s vibrant palette of colours to canvas.

“I’m from Boroughbridge originally, and come from an artistic family. My mother painted and she and my father was a keen gardener and taught me to love the outdoors. Growing up I learned to enjoy sketching, and grew up around beautiful gardens, too.”

Wendy has lived in 14 different places across the UK, but a move to Scotland in the late 1980s and provided a rich source of inspiration with some beautiful scenery in Royal Deeside;

“I’VE ENJOYED CREATING BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATIONS IN A TRADITIONAL STYLE, FROM FLOWERS TO TREES TO SCENERY,” SAYS WENDY... 22

craggy landscapes, pretty streams and of course, swathes of heather. It was in Deeside that Wendy attended an art group and exhibited some of her early work with them. “I remember looking at the work in the exhibition and thinking there was too much similarity,” she says. “From that point on I only attended workshops, I was careful to pick up techniques and ideas, but to retain my own style.”

Wendy and husband Brian moved to the county in 2004, attracted by the laid back way of life and features like the county’s huge skies and vast fens - a perfect muse for an artist who takes their cues from the natural world.

“I’ve always enjoyed creating botanical illustrations in a traditional style, from flowers to trees to country scenery,” says Wendy. “And during one workshop with an artist called Margaret Merritt, I realised that painting with fabric dyes rather than conventional acrylics and watercolours would yield paintings with especially bright, saturated colours.

Inset: Wendy Else is the Little Hale artist who took the Carre Gallery’s 2015 Lincolnshire Pride award for her innovative and colourful pieces created using colourful and saturated fabric dyes.

Colours: Little Hale artist Wendy Else’s Poppy Glade was painted using fabric dyes rather than acrylics, which has resulted in especially vibrant, heavily saturated colours which bring real depth to a contemporary take on traditional botanical illustrations.

“I began to experiment and created a signature style which features four key colours blended into one another, tilting or blowing onto the paper to get the colour to interact with the paper. I start off with the paper laid flat and gradually build up layers of colour, adding a mix of brushwork once it can be positioned vertically on the easel.”

Wendy’s work is beautifully colourful, and caught our eye when it was featured among

other artists in Sleaford’s Carre Gallery’s annual exhibition. We chose Wendy to receive the award and be featured in the magazine after viewing over the event’s 50 exhibits.

Using the fabric dyes is still a relatively unexplored technique, but Wendy’s use of it has enabled her to take a simple botanical sketch, then work from her imagination to combine various colours to great effect.

“The exhibition always has so many different local artists working in so many different styles. It’s good to be a part of such a diverse community, and as an artist it gives you the confidence to exhibit your work.”

“I think every artist should experiment with their own medium, and perhaps always try to create the same piece two or three times with different techniques.

“I took a great interest in visiting the Carre Gallery, and found it really inclusive. It represents ‘art for everyone’ and is so friendly,” says Wendy.

Away from her painting, Wendy and Brian have also created a pretty cottage garden at their Little Hale home. Wendy takes inspiration for her work from there, and from the area’s National Trust properties, from Belton House to the county’s other landscapes. “I’ve never worked in one single style, and I think it’s good to loosen up and experiment with styles.”

“I’ve created two pieces using the technique; Floral Fantasy and Poppy Glade, incorporating aquilegias, thistles, and I’ll always incorporate violets as that was my mother’s name.”

“I’ve found a technique I love working with, one that yields some really rich colours that really speak to me.” n Wendy’s artwork Floral Fantasy and Poppy Glade are both available to purchase at £85/ea. The artist also accepts commissions, and can be contacted via Carre Gallery on Carre Street, Sleaford. Call 01529 415056 or see the gallery’s website at www.carregallery.co.uk for details of forthcoming exhibitions of local artists’ work.

Death of the tax return?

When I first started my career working in tax each pair of employees shared a PC - a marked difference to today’s office where it’s usual for each employee to have their own allocated PC, or laptop, and where they may also utilise multiple screens in their work! It’s not only the physical use of computers that have changed; today people find themselves engaging digitally as they work via emails, Skype, webinars and of course, internet usage.

Times have also moved on in the world of tax compliance; as a trainee I learned to deal with “Notices of Assessment”, which were basically notifications of tax liabilities issued by the Inland Revenue (as it was then) and that were agreed or appealed as necessary.

A new system of tax compliance was introduced for tax returns for the year ended 5 April 1997 onwards – Self Assessment. This was a radical departure from the world of Assessments as the responsibility of reporting taxable income and calculating the tax due now lay in the hands of the taxpayer, or their agent. As Self Assessment was rigid in its filing requirements and deadlines, the Revenue introduced the Electronic Lodgement Service (ELS) which enabled approved Agents to electronically submit tax return information for their clients. Digital engagement with the Revenue had begun.

By the time Agents were filing tax returns for the year ended 5 April 2004 the popularity of the ELS system had been overtaken by the Revenue’s online internet filing service which soon became the most popular system used by Agents. So much so that the ELS system ceased to operate in March 2006.

HM Revenue & Customs (as it became known as from April 2005) has outlined plans to make increasing use of technology with the strategic aim of dealing with taxpayers electronically as far as possible. In his March 2015 Budget speech George Osborne announced “the death of the annual tax return” and heralded the introduction of digital tax accounts.

“Your Tax Account” launched first which enabled businesses to deal with their tax affairs. In December 2015 the Revenue notified Agents that a Personal Tax Account (PTA) was now available for individuals. Unfortunately, these accounts aren’t designed for use by Agents so at the time of writing – early December 2015 – I haven’t been able to experience whether or not they are straightforward to use or the scope of services they offer.

HMRC have advised that future tax returns will be pre populated using data that is already held in their systems, for example pay and tax details - albeit that the use of digital tax accounts will actually mean the end of the tax return for many taxpayers. The Revenue believe that providing taxpayers with the capability to provide them with details of their taxable income at any time, rather than at a fixed deadline, will encourage taxpayers to be more efficient when dealing with their affairs.

However, approximately 890,000 taxpayers were late submitting their tax return for the year ended 5 April 2014, and therefore it remains to be seen whether digital engagement will prove to alleviate this issue or whether taxpayers will still perceive reporting their tax liabilities as a burden. LINCOLN

Give your heart to Lincoln this month and enjoy creative cuisine at the city’s Lincoln Hotel. A year of refurbishment has created a fresh new look for the venue, and its Green Room restaurant is the ideal place to enjoy Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day dining... Words & Images: Rob Davis.

A cool blast of wind blew down historic Bailgate recently, but our hearts were warmed by the sight of the Cathedral at dusk, and by the prospect of a return to the dining room of Lincoln’s most popular hotels, the eponymous venue sporting modernist architecture on Eastgate. For two years now The Lincoln Hotel’s Green Room restaurant has been overseen by Dale Gill, whose tenure as Head Chef has fortunately seen its standards of creativity and presentation remaining as keen as ever. For the uninitiated, the building was created in 1965, right next to the Cathedral itself.

The Lincoln’s Green Room takes care of the hotel’s fine dining provision, whilst breakfast service, functions and weddings all take place in The Long Room.

Main Course: Monkfish with pancetta, spinach purée and paprika potatoes.

2015 saw the hotel’s ground floor subjected to some substantial changes, with March yielding a dividing glass partition between the main entrance and the downstairs lounge. This has made the entrance a little cosier in the chilly months, and has the added benefit 37

“Presentation of food in the Green Room has always been impressive; clean and unfussy. Flavours are well-judged and there’s a sense that flavours are allowed to come to the fore without too much going on in the background...”

weddings and conferences an adaptable space which can be expanded to host up to 150 guests.

The 71 bedrooms hotel also has, in addition to the new look Long Room, and The Green Room’s 35 covers, a smaller private dining room, the Elizabeth Room, suited to private dining for parties of up to 12 people.

Non-residents are, of course, welcome at the hotel, with dining taking place from noon-3pm and from 6pm-9.30pm seven days a week.

of facilitating a bright new colour scheme aimed at working with, rather than fighting against, the building’s 1960s architecture.

The whole building was created to capitalise on a tourist boom with Britain becoming ‘cool’ following fleeting success in the fields of music and football in the swinging sixties.

Revelling in its heritage, the building’s ground floor lounge now sports a bright red colour scheme with geometric wallpaper and brightly upholstered chairs. There’s a new bar area in the lounge, too, serving a daily changing provision of freshly baked cakes, cookies, fudge and so on.

More recently, the bar area in the Long Room was removed and the function room behind it, the Spires Room, was combined. The result is a spacious area which will provide more room for diners on peak occasions like Mother’s Day lunch. In addition, the new ground floor layout will afford those who use the hotel to host functions like

Lunchtime dining provides a choice of three starters, five main courses and three desserts, based on a prix fixe menu at £14/two courses or £16/three courses. An afternoon tea service from noon-5pm and a comprehensive coffee menu provide a great place to sit and relax, with, of course, unparalleled views of the Cathedral’s cloister.

Evening service sees a choice of six starters, six main courses and five desserts, with à la carte pricing.

Suppliers providing the Green Room with its ingredients include Fosters of Monks Road, M&J Seafood, who facilitate daily deliveries of fresh fish from Grimsby docks, and myriad cheese suppliers like Cote Hill, Lincolnshire Poacher and Park View, who produce Dambuster. The cheese selection in the Green Room is unrivalled in its local provenance, and is a great option for yellowbellied patriots.

Presentation in the Green Room has always been impressive; clean and unfussy. Flavours are well-judged and there’s a sense that flavours are allowed to come to the fore without too much going on in the background - our confit duck terrine starter is a good example, served with a fried quail egg and salted duck crisp.

“We’re really pleased with the way the hotel’s look and feel has evolved over the past year,” says General Manager James Little. We followed our starters of duck terrine and goat’s cheese with a monkfish dish with pancetta, spinach purée and paprika potatoes, then enjoyed a winter warmer in the form of an orange créme brûlée served with a ginger biscotti.

Above: Local cheese board with Cote Hill, Poacher and Dambuster. Main: Our créme brûlée was flavoured with orange and came with a ginger biscotti.

40

To accompany your meal, there’s a selection of eight bins of red, eight white, three rosé and six sparkling options, and if you’re happy to stay a little longer, there’s a regular programme of live music and comedy events in Bar ‘67 to keep visitors entertained until the warmer months emerge.

The Lincoln Hotel will also provide winter diners with the opportunity to enjoy a four course set menu for Valentine’s Day, and a three course Mother’s Day menu in the Long Room too. Both prove popular each year so early booking is advised, but you won’t be disappointed; Dale and his fivestrong brigade provide imaginative, presented dining opportunities, with flavour to match.

“We’re really pleased with the way the hotel’s look and feel has evolved over the past year,” says General Manager James Little. “We’ve been privately owned for over 14 years now, and that’s given us the ability to ensure that our rooms, our restaurants and lounges and our food are all unique, and reflect the character of Lincoln... a friendly city that, just like us, has both character and quality.”

- RECIPES -

Chocolate Fondant with melting centre... (Makes six to eight)

Ingredients: 200g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 200g softened butter 200g light brown sugar 200g plain flour 4 whole eggs 4 extra egg yolks Cocoa powder for dusting 50g butter for coating

Recipes & Food: Steven Bennett. Visit www.thecomfyduck.co.uk for more information.

This gooey, devilish dessert is easier to make than it looks! Follow Steven Bennett, the Lincolnshire Chef ’s simple recipe for the perfect Valentine’s dessert or a dinner party crowd-pleaser.

Start off by preparing your moulds. Using heatproof cups or ramekins, smear a generous amount of butter around the whole of the inside and add a spoonful of cocoa powder, turning the cup to coat the buttered sides and the bottom of the ramekins. Tap away any excess cocoa powder from the bottom of your moulds and repeat the process with the rest of the cups. Place a glass bowl over a pan of barely simmering water and add the dark chocolate and softened butter.

Gently melt and combine together with a wooden spoon. Leave this to cool whilst you get to work on the next part of the dish.

“This gooey, devilish dessert is a lot easier than it looks! Follow Steven Bennett’s recipe for the perfect fondant...”

46

Take a large glass bowl and whisk the eggs and the sugar until light and fluffy. Sift the flour into the egg and sugar mixture and fold together. Add the chocolate mixture to the egg and sugar mixture in thirds and fold together until it’s fully combined.

Fill the cups two thirds full with the mixture and place in the fridge for at least an hour. This can be done the morning or during the day before serving. Remove from the fridge and place in a 180ºc fan assisted oven and bake for around 10-

12 minutes until the tops of the fondant have formed a thin crust.

Remove from the oven and set to one side for one minute before tipping them from their moulds. To serve, carefully tap the fondant out of its mould and place on a plate adding a dollop of crème fraiche or a scoop of your favourite ice cream.

4. ROSES ARE RED, VIOLETS ARE BLUE... Roses are red, violets are blue, lilies are pretty and pink flowers are too. Whether your Valentine is your wife, girlfriend or a date, buying flowers can be tricky; but pop into your local independent florist, like Lincoln’s Flowers by Suzanne, for help. Flowers are always a joy to receive, no matter what you choose. buy here are florist Jen’s recommended arrangements for Valentine’s Day… The Classic Red roses are the classic choice for Valentine’s. Be sure to choose red roses that are large headed and come from a good rose stock like Naomi, Grand Prix or Freedom (your florist can advise you).

Pretty in Pink Pink is the second classic choice for Valentine’s Day flowers; less intense than the reds and for a gentler approach to the expectation of red roses. Choose scented pink roses such as O’Hara for a special touch.

Other Reds You don’t have to choose red roses for your Valentine; tulips are in season at this time, with red tulips especially symbolising ‘true love’.

Personal Touch Choosing your Valentine’s favourite flowers will prove especially popular. Be sure to speak to your florist well in advance so they can advise if they are in season and be able to order them early enough for you. Your card message is incredibly important, so be yourself, as this will make the flowers even more special. n For all flower advice and to order a bouquet displayed on this page, see Jen Hollingworth at Flowers by Suzanne, 01522 690105, www.flowersbysuzanne.co.uk.

Liz Hobbs is absolutely formidable. A world champion water skier, broadcaster and businesswoman. Interior design is supposed to be her personal interest - a way to relax and yet, approaching it with the same degree of tenacity, confidence and focus as her sporting and business pursuits, it’s little surprise that she’s achieved the same degree of success creating her home as she has in her professional life.

Liz moved to the area with her former husband, the actor Fraser Hines, who left TV soap Emmerdale back in 1994.

She moved to Mulberry House, on the outskirts of Newark in the village of New Balderton in 2003 and set about transforming the house into the impeccably re-designed property it is today.

Now on the market for £1,000,000, the house was built 30 years ago by Abel Homes, on seven acres of land, home to a luxury development of six houses.

Above/Main: The living room features light-reflecting glass wallpaper, and a contemporary ribbon fireplace. The entrance hall has a bespoke staircase with 12ft triple-drop chandelier in Czechoslovakian crystal.

ARRANGED OVER THREE FLOORS, THE HOUSE WAS BUILT 30 YEARS AGO BY ABEL HOMES, ON SEVEN ACRES OF LAND OVERLOOKING THE PARKLAND OF NEWARK’S HIGHFIELD PREP SCHOOL... Overlooking the parkland of Highfield School, which Liz believes is the best junior school in the area, it’s a property set in little under half an acre, but boasting three floors of accommodation, four reception rooms and five bedroom suites.

Low maintenance grounds and a convenient proximity to Newark’s town centre mean that despite the size and quality of its accommodation, and the privacy of its outlook, it’s a property close to the centre of Newark, rather than one isolated in the middle of the countryside.

“We loved the potential that the house had when we first viewed it,” says Liz. “But our renovation efforts went beyond the usual lick of paint. We removed all of the walls that weren’t supporting walls - and a few that were - and created a living kitchen with a ‘scruff lounge,’ a more formal snug and 61

The different areas almost ‘reveal’ themselves, with a kitchen designed by Liz herself featuring a raised bar, domino cooking appliances by Neff overlooking the preparation area and a dedicated space for plating up.

Throughout the ground floor is underfloor heating to the semi-gloss natural marble floor, and in the cooler months the drawing room features a contemporary ribbon fire, flanked by beautiful slate glass wallpaper.

In addition to the formal sitting room, snug and living kitchen, there’s also a games room, and study on the ground floor, as well as a utility kitchen with a steam room adjoining it.

The grounds of the property feature a large hot tub, and mature well-stocked beds, as well as secure access via electric gates.

“I’m a huge fan of the glass wallpaper in the living room and of the metallic fabrics in the headboard panels of the guest annexe, which serve to play with both the ambient and accent light in each room. We’ve also installed a Sonos audio controller throughout the house too, all to create the feel of a light, luxurious, but also modern family home.”

Managing each element of the property’s design herself, Liz has created a completely unique property, but with a new project in mind, Liz has put Mulberry House onto the market with estate agency Humberts.

It’s a unique property and a great proposition for its next owners, boasting not only luxurious living, but an incredible degree of style, too!

The Old RECTORY The Old Rectory, a private property in the very sought after Lincolnshire village of Fulbeck, has recently become available with Mount & Minster Estate Agents. The former rectory is privately situated in the heart of the Lincolnshire’s cliff village and offers plenty of space as a seven bedroom family home. It promises beautiful countryside views just beyond the property’s tennis court... Words: Tilly Wilkinson.

There’s something charming about keeping all of the historical elements of a property at the forefront of any development you undertake. The owners of the Old Rectory in Fulbeck, have done exactly that, retaining the history of the property with period portraits, marble fireplaces and lavish colours.

The village itself accommodates some of the most prominent private homes for miles around. Fulbeck benefits from a beautifully maintained cricket green and playing fields. It’s also home to one of the county’s most loved pubs, a short walk from the Old Rectory, the Hare & Hounds.

The property features well proportioned rooms including a drawing room, family room, dining room, study, kitchen with separate utility and walk-in pantry, an additional butler’s pantry and the grand 70

entrance hall accessed via a solid oak door. One of the most impressive features of the house is the conservatory that looks out over the gardens, tennis court and views beyond. The gardens are perfect for hosting a family tennis match or hosting a tennis tournament between neighbours.

The conservatory almost transports you to another country, with pantile flooring, light flooding through the windows and the various plants the current owners have decorated it with, putting one in mind of an Italian restaurant or French café.

Under the ground floor there is a cellar with two separate rooms and a central corridor, ideal for conversion or perhaps storing wine.

Upstairs, there are a further two floors that accommodate seven double bedrooms, a family bathroom and additional family shower room, an ensuite bathroom to the

Main: The living area features a marble fireplace and very original design, tying in well with the property’s history. The current owners have retained the bells that the vicar would have used to call his servants.

master bedroom and a cavernous loft that is suitable for conversion for alternative uses.

The property is approached via a private gravelled driveway with plenty of parking. There are a number of smaller outbuildings include a coal store in addition to a useful gardener’s store.

A grass tennis court is situated in front of the house and has the potential to be reverted back to a front lawn to complement the additional 360 degree lawns surrounding this pretty property.

But we feel the tennis court adds a certain something to the property that sets it apart from the rest. You can just imagine local supporters cheering on a village tournament between neighbours on the patio and from the orangery.

The Old Rectory’s location is a huge factor as Fulbeck’s properties are much in demand. It has superb rail links being close to both Grantham and Newark. It’s a very beautiful village, it’s not far from Lincoln, and there are a number of highly regarded schools in the area, too. The property isn’t far from Lincoln Minster, The Priory, and Carre’s Grammar School.

Ralph Wyrley-Birch, of Mount & Minster, knows the property well. The firm, based in Lincoln and London, have been instructed to sell this stunning family home with offers invited in excess of £1m. “When the family acquired this statement property, some 30 years ago,” says Mr Wyrley-Birch, “They really went to town with it. Quite literally in fact, with some of the finest curtains, wallpapers and carpets sourced from high-end outlets in London. Over the years, further elements have been added to really make this not only a warm, family home, but also an excellent space in which to entertain.” This extensive residence is ideal for anyone who is looking for their next family home.

Main: The property has an attractive main entrance with stone mullion windows, an oak door, adjacent church and herbaceous borders.

“The owners have had many years of happiness and laughter in this glorious home,” says Mr Wyrley-Birch. “The owners’ children have all grown-up, starting families of their own and there is no longer a need for such a large residence for the present owners.”

“They, like many others, have fallen in love with the location over the years and have decided to remain in the village and convert a beautiful barn which is now completed.”

“The vendors have moved into their new home up the road and The Old Rectory is now available with no onward chain which will be hugely attractive to any prospective purchaser.”

“This property presents a blank canvas. There are areas that provide the opportunity for the new custodians, whoever they are fortunate to be, to decorate it to their own tastes and really make it theirs.”

Mr Wyrley-Birch goes on to say, “There is no doubt in my mind that no matter how the new owners decide to make their own mark on this fabulous house, the splendid period features, charm and sheer warmth will remain for many years to come.”

Repurposing old homes to make them fit for modern families is a tough challenge, not least in the kitchen where there are practicalities to consider, as well as aesthetics, and the need to accommodate appliances which get hot, use water or make a noise. It’s a tricky room, the purpose of which has change so much over the past few decades.

More than any other room in the house, the way your family uses your kitchen - the amount of time you spend with the children, or cooking, etc., plus the necessity to create a kitchen which suits the style and size of your home, makes offering any generic advice on kitchen design virtually impossible. Rather, it’s better to seek the advice of several

A separate utility room will keep white goods out of the way and deaden the noise of spinning washing machines, providing a place for muddy boots and coats, too.

Meanwhile, bi-fold doors will blur the indoors and outdoor terraces around your home, creating a more versatile space in the summer months. The trend towards ‘living kitchens’ these days usually entails creating a kitchen which incorporates living room areas and informal dining room areas,

Changes to layout will incur more work than a simple facelift, with the relocation of services, and if you invest in solid cabinetry and doors which can be easily painted, your room will be ‘future-proof ’ by virtue of the ability to give it a mid-life facelift with a lick of paint. If your cabinetry is solid you can also minimise disruption by simply replacing work surfaces using a company like Newark’s Granite Earth. Enabling Independent Living...

AHM Installations are specialists in providing bathroom and kitchens that have a unique difference. The firm, based in Lincoln and Newark, specialises in creating rooms to facilitate independent living...

Being able to live independently is a vital part of dignity in later life. That’s why Lincoln and Newark based AHM Installations has spend over 25 years perfecting the design of rooms to facilitate independent living in later life, or those with mobility problems.

“I originally worked in the rise and recline bed industry, helping people to remain comfortable in their own homes,” says Director Simon Symcox, who runs the company with wife Julie and son Charlie.

“I saw the need to provide not just furnishings and appliances like stairlifts, but whole rooms created around the personal needs of each user.” “These include bathrooms with wheelchair accessibility, walk-in baths and showers, and baths with features like our electrically operated lifts.”

“In kitchens, we can provide rise and fall work surfaces, wheelchair accessible kitchens, and rooms for those with impaired vision.”

“I SAW THE NEED TO PROVIDE NOT JUST LIVING AIDS, BUT WHOLE ROOMS CREATED AROUND THE PERSONAL NEEDS OF EACH USER...” 84

“Crucially, these room look smart, feel luxurious and work well, without feeling too clinical. We work to any budget, and we’ve a style to suit anyone.”

The firm’s specialism means that AHM Installations are well-placed to provide advice with unprecedented expertise and product knowledge.

But moreover, its team of in-house fitters and specialised tradespeople provide a trustworthy service that facilitate the same peace-of-mind during the design and installation process as you’ll experience after the creation of each new room.

In addition to complete kitchens and bathrooms, the firm can also provide heating solutions, and can install stairlifts for mobility over different floors.

“It’s a specialised industry, but one that necessitates a trustworthy and reliable service too,” says Simon. “That’s why we provide a 12-month warranty on all bathrooms, shower rooms and wetrooms, and insist on only using quality products.” n For more information on AHM Installation’s bespoke kitchens and bathrooms for independent living, call 01522 500288 or 01636 821443 or see www.ahminstallations.co.uk. - FARMING MATTERS -

On The Farm The Effects of Autumn

This month, farming expert Barry Poston explains how last autumn affected the farming industry in a very positive way, the problems with farming currently, how the livestock industry is performing and the introduction of medium sized anaerobic digester plants to the county...

After one of the kindest autumns, weather wise, most farmers were able to complete their harvests of wheat, peas, potatoes and the majority of their sugar beet. Sowings of winter wheat proceeded with almost perfect seedbeds and most fields of wheat are now showing a very healthy green appearance.

“Cattle and sheep also appreciate fine autumn weather with the grass growing well so beef and lamb is holding returns...”

Another advantage of the good weather was the fact that most autumn work was completed with minimal damage to the soil structure which can often mean the use of heavy machinery in muddy and sticky conditions. Cattle and sheep also appreciate a fine autumn weather with the grass growing away well.

90

The main trade for beef and lamb is holding returns.

Unfortunately, milk prices are currently below production costs and many dairy farmers are giving up producing milk.

Another problem in farming at the present time is the poor return on pig production again mainly due to the poor returns on the fat pigs. Fortunately, the price of feeding barley is also low and as this constitutes the major cost of production, so returns are not as poor as they might be.

Pig producers are usually very efficient and they regularly reduce their costs normally by reducing the conversion rate of meat from foodstuffs.

Breeding results have also been improved with many pig keepers producing well over 20 pigs per sow each year.

One recent noticeable aspect of the arable scene has been the appearance of many of the medium sized anaerobic digester plants in the county.

Growing AD energy plants for home consumption and produce for third party. Whole crop cereals can provide a useful control of blackgrass.

A renewable investment should be costed up and one should make sure that investment returns are carefully monitored. Barry Poston is the area’s foremost farming expert with a long history working in both arable and livestock environments. He has seen a great many changes in the county’s main industry!

A precursor to the sport of jump racing, this month see the beginning of the hunting community’s point-to-point meets. It’s a chance to admire the athleticism of the region’s most powerful horses, and to show your support for a pastime which originated in 1792. >> Point-to-point meetings are becoming an endangered species. It’s a shame, as these jump racing events are a spectacular display of equine prowess, and remain an important form of financial support to the county’s hunting community.

Both the Burton and Blankney hunts ceased their point-to-point events in 2014, but the Brocklesby and South Wold hunts are still holding their events, which take place on Lord Yarborough’s Brocklesby Estate on 7th February and 6th March respectively. If you appreciate the athleticism of hunter class horses or fancy a flutter, the area’s meetings promise a day of great entertainment.

“The events began quite informally, a sort of opportunity for subscribers of a hunt to boast of their riding prowess and prove the speed and stamina of their animals,” says Sally Spink, secretary of the South Wold.

“There are over 120 point-to-point meetings nationally, typically held between November and March. The South Wold’s event comprises seven races a day, attracts 600 spectators and has around 119 entries, with about 70 runners on the day.”

Point-to-point races are typically between two and four miles long, with the South Wold’s event three miles in length with 18 obstacles. It takes a sub-committee of 17 people to bring the hunt’s point-to-point event to fruition, and over 100 volunteers on the day, with volunteer doctors, and vets among these. “We’re very grateful to everyone who helps us to host the event, and of course to Lord Yarborough himself for providing our venue.”

In its earliest form, a point-to-point was a steeplechase between two churches, taking on its modern format around the 1870s,

“THERE ARE OVER 120 POINT-TO-POINT MEETINGS NATIONALLY, BETWEEN OCTOBER AND MARCH. THE SOUTH WOLD’S EVENT COMPRISES SEVEN RACES A DAY, ATTRACTS 600 SPECTATORS AND HAS 119 ENTRIES, WITH 70 RUNNERS ON THE DAY...”

becoming commonplace in the 1920s in our part of the country.

The South Wold’s event originated in the 1940s at South Willingham before moving to the Revesby Estate in the late 1960s, then Market Rasen’s racecourse and finally to Brocklesby Park in recent years. In that time the sport has become more ‘professional,’ with the BHA licensing hunts to run point-to-point events and the horses themselves valued higher than ever - it’s possible to pay between £50,000-100,000 for a good point-to-pointer. Whilst the rules on riders have been relaxed (in previous years, even groom and whippers weren’t permitted to compete), professional jockeys are still prohibited from competing, the key condition imposed today is that a point-to-point rider must be a member or subscriber of a hunt (the South Wold has up to 50 followers on key meets), to compete in either the novice or open classes.

about Point-to-Point?” “I haven’t missed a point-to-point meeting at Brocklesby Park for over 40 years. My father was heavily involved in the sport and now I serve as chairperson of the stewards and creator of the course at Brocklesby for both the South Wold and Brocklesby hunts. There’s no doubt that the point-to-point racing has become as professional as conventional horseracing, but it has never lost its friendly feel and is still a really enjoyable, accessible sport that anyone can appreciate...” Brian Crawford, Chairman “I’ve ten horses in training at the moment and regularly take horses to Brocklesby. compared to informal steeplechases of the past,” says Harry Thorpe, Clerk of the Course, “There’s been a real development of point-to-point which is now administered by The Point-to-Point Authority, with the company assisting with funding to each course. Despite that though, the sport still managed to retain a really homely, friendly feel that has been lost from larger race meetings.” “Our event had over 30 trade stands last year, and we anticipate even more in 2016. Our fixture tends to attract families who all want to enjoy a great day, with the usual attractions of a ‘day at the races’ supplemented by a local feel,” says Sally.

g n i y l F THE NEST Lincolnshire artist Hannah Dale is better known for her beautifully illustrated homeware. This month though, she releases a new book, celebrating the early life of Britain’s best loved animals! Words & Illustrations: Hannah Dale.

SHETLAND PONY

equus fernus caballus The little Shetland is the strongest of all horses, pound for pound, and it can pull twice its own weight. In the industrial revolution, this versatile little pony helped miners in the coal mines and the famous pit ponies are remembered for their bravery in these tough conditions. Testament to their intelligence, miniature Shetlands are even used as guide horses, helping the blind in the same role as guide dogs. It’s hard to imagine a more appealing creature than a Shetland foal, standing within minutes of birth and clothed in a tufty, warm coat, already wellequipped to cope with the difficult conditions of its ancestral birthplace.

- ANIMALS -

Baby animals. Few things in life are ‘cuter’ and they’re a particular fascination for Hannah Dale, but when the Lincolnshire artist was asked to compile a book about them, she admits it was a daunting subject.

TABBY CAT felis catus Although not a distinct breed, the ‘moggy’ is by far the most popular type of domestic cat and comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Tabby markings consist of distinctive swirls and stripes – always with an ‘M’ shape on the forehead. A kitten’s eyesight and hearing develop within two weeks. Oh, and the collective noun for kittens is a ‘kindle.’

Based in Melton Ross, Hannah read Zoology at Cambridge before becoming a stockbroker. Marrying her farmer husband, she enjoyed painting in her spare time, inspired by foxes, pheasants, geese, dogs and hens.

Hannah started to design her own range of greeting cards, then began a collaboration with Portmeirion and now creates mugs, kitchen ceramics, tinware, worktop savers and pet bowls.

Her latest book has been produced for the National Trust and is an easy-to-read look at the early days of Britain’s best loved animals.

Divided into woodland, farmland, river, coast, garden and domestic chapters, it features Hannah’s beautiful illustrations and a short biography of each species. It’s a great gift idea, or a super book for your coffee table!

MALLARD anas platyrhynchos ‘Location, location, location’ is the order of the day when it comes to mallard nest building. She chooses a spot on the ground, on dry land but close to water, with overhanging vegetation for some protection. Mallards usually lay between eight and 13 blue-green eggs, and once incubation starts, she will also pluck some feathers with which to line the nest. The eggs hatch after 23–30 days and the ducklings are able to swim from birth and venture out of the nest after just 13 hours.

n Hannah’s new book, Flying The Nest, is published by National Trust Books. It’s now available from all good bookshops or National Trust properties’ gift shops, priced £9.99.

“There is no denying the ‘cute’ factor – it’s striking how appealing baby animals of all species are – and during the process of researching the book, I came across a few that even surprised me with their unutterable gorgeousness,” says Hannah.

“I was, therefore, unsure how to tackle a subject almost defined by its sweetness – it’s just not me! I needn’t have worried.”

“It’s impossible to get away from the fact that baby animals are cute, and in the end, I embraced this.”

“After all, life is often tough for newly born wildlife, and this was a recurring theme as I researched the book.”

“I have tried to offer a glimpse into the fascinating world of the wild and domestic animals we share our lives with and I hope that the illustrations serve to capture some of the eccentric and charming personalities of these wonderful characters.”

“Above all, though, I hope it inspires readers to celebrate the wonderful variety of life in the great British countryside!” says Hannah.

SPANIEL

canis lupus familiaris

Enthusiastic tail wagging is the signature style of spaniels, as any spaniel lover well knows. Affectionate, patient, playful and adaptable, there are eighteen breeds of spaniel across the world, the most well known being the springer spaniels, the cocker spaniels, the water spaniels and the cavalier King Charles spaniel. Spaniels were originally bred as hunting dogs, ushing (or springing!). Their intelligent and gentle nature, as well as their fun-loving and playful personalities, makes them an ideal family pet and there is no wonder that their popularity has soared. Spaniel puppies are energetic bundles of fun, needing large amounts of attention and exercise. They are devoted to their human families and will want as much company as possible!

DAY Around the World in a

Clare and Chris Trendell not only held a celebration of their love for one another, they also themed their day around their time spent travelling the globe, taking friends and family around the world in one day. In turn, their guests gave them some really unique wedding presents... Photography: PM Photography, 01522 529546, www.lovemy.photos.

The theme of a wedding should always be personal and unique to each couple. That’s why this month’s couple, Chris and Clare, employed a distinctly international feel to precedings on their day. Chris and former travel agent Clare, have travelled the world together, experiencing many different cultures. The couple wanted to bring their travel experiences to the wedding.

With themed table names and other special features, they shared their travel stories with family and friends.

The couple live in North Hykeham; Clare works in marketing and Chris is a car repair specialist. The couple announced their engagement after their trip to Dubai. 102

Unfortunately, the engagement ring didn’t arrive in time for the trip so, with the thought in mind that Chris could present her with the ring when they’re home, he proposed on the plane journey back to the UK.

“We had two years to plan the wedding but we knew what we wanted for some of the most important decisions,” says Clare. “For example, we wanted to get married in the family church, St Giles in Langton by Wragby, where many other relatives have had their ceremony.”

“We wanted a sort of vintage theme so we chose burgundy, cream and green for the colour theme and The Petwood for the venue, because it offers such pretty surroundings and beautiful photos.”

“Chris planned to propose on our trip to Dubai but the ring didn’t arrive in time so he proposed on the plane journey back to the UK so I would have the ring later on in the day...” Photography: PM Photography, 01522 529546, www.lovemy.photos.

“For my dress, I visited at least ten shops and went as far as Nottingham to find ‘the one,’ but I found myself coming back to one shop as the lady was able to provide the one I’d really set my heart on. The bridesmaid dresses were equally beautiful!” “For wedding favours, my dad is a beekeeper so he brought homemade pots of honey with the caption Meant to Bee on the label.”

“It was quite scary walking down the aisle but it also felt very romantic, and as if it was just Chris and I in the room. The vicar was fantastic as well - we thought he did a great job and made us feel relaxed.”

“Later on at the reception, we had a few surprises from other family members. Chris’s brother, Andrew, works for a music magazine so he interviews famous people.”

He managed to get the The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, Editors, Libertines and even Gary Barlow to send congratulatory videos to us which was so special!” “Chris’s cousin also arranged a flypast of a Dakota which we weren’t expecting!”

“We had our honeymoon in Thailand, spending three nights in Bangkok experiencing the busy city life. We then went to Koh Samui for seven nights.”

“This was really amazing because we went elephant trekking, kayaking and spent time together on the beach and by the pool. It was the perfect end to the celebrations.” “If I was to offer any advice to people planning their wedding, be well organised and plan well in advance. I used websites like UKbride to make it a little easier.”

RUBY RED

MAC lipstick in its most favoured shade of Ruby Woo is one of the best selling red lipsticks around. There’s a reason why Vogue magazine believes it’s the only shade of red any woman could ever want in a lip colour. It’s part of the retro matte collection at MAC so it’s on trend, perhaps the reasons it’s flying off the shelves. It can be worn day-to-day or to an occasion so it’s definitely a must buy, £16.

From dentures to

TEETH

Unsecured dentures are an old-fashioned solution for people who have lost all of their teeth. Unfortunately, you may find that wearing dentures can be painful, inconvenient and awkward. They can make it difficult to chew, which can stop you from eating many of the foods you once enjoyed. Often, your palate is covered and this can prevent you from tasting your food properly. Wearing dentures may also affect how you pronounce words and therefore the way you speak. Are you living life to the fullest?

Attractive, healthy teeth play an important role in our general health and wellbeing. You look and feel confident, and are free to laugh with friends and family – anytime and anywhere.

Missing teeth can cause bone loss and the jawbone to shrink. This is because the bone is no longer stimulated when you chew food – something that happens routinely when you use your natural teeth. This causes

116

physical changes to your face. Your jaw line shrinks, causing dentures to lose their fit. They often slip, cause pain, or even become embarrassing. That is why attractive, healthy teeth are important for health and overall wellbeing.

Beyond help?

No matter how bad you think your teeth are, our experienced team at The Dental Health Centre in Grantham will always be able to provide solutions that will improve your mouth’s function. 1. FRAGRANCES

If it’s a fragrance you’re looking for, we suggest the winner of GQ’s Best New Fragrance. Valentino Uomo is a scent that isn’t too overpowering. It’s the sort of fragrance that people compliment you on, an addictive one that’s sweet, but still comes across as masculine. Eau de toilette, £63/100ml from Valentino’s website. Oldrids & Downtown offers a gift set for just £46.

2. SKIN CARE

Moisturiser is something some men would skip, but it’s so important. It’s not just women’s skin that needs keeping hydrated. Clarins daily moisturiser for men was at the top spot but Tom Ford’s latest moisturiser, Oil-Free Daily, is something that can’t be frowned upon. It’s soft and non-sticky with the sort of pleasing fragrance you can only expect from Tom Ford, £75.

3. HAIR CARE

The cold weather this winter is damaging to skin and hair. Regularly using an oil like Woody’s or Mrs White’s can help keep beards well conditioned through February. If you’re looking for high quality products like this, visit the Demon Barber of Lincoln on the High Street or call 07761 225956, £5.99.

4. SHAVING SET

This beautiful Penhaligon Nickel shaving set doesn’t only look lovely for a bathroom with chrome accents, it’s also the best way to shave. We recommend applying traditional shaving lather with a brush, for a closer, more comfortable shave. It’s a perfect men’s gift, £136.

5. SHAVING CREAM

Simpsons Luxury Shaving Cream is definitely a treat so we think this is a perfect gift for your gentleman this Valentine’s Day. It’s the most revitalising shaving experience for the traditional wet shaver. If you’re looking for high quality shaving products, visit Stamford Barber Shop. THE SUN Your Place in

OWNING A PLACE IN THE SUN WAS A DREAM THAT WOODHALL SPA’S DAVID JAGGER REALISED WITH THE CREATION OF A HOLIDAY HOME IN FLORIDA. FULLY FURNISHED FOR ITS NEXT OWNERS TO ESCAPE OUR DREARY WINTER, AND ON SALE FOR JUST £230,000...

1 - Lincs Pride FEB 163.qxp 04/01/2016 12:44 Page 123

We all dream of a place in the sun. But construction businessman David Jagger, who comes from Woodhall Spa, turned that dream into reality with the creation of his second home in Florida.

“Professionally, I’ve alway been in the construction industry, but in my personal life I’ve a long-standing appreciation for aeroplanes,” says David.

“I gained my pilot’s license in 1977 and would fly from a private airstrip I created near Woodhall.”

David’s interests in property and aviation intersected on a visit to Florida, where a friend had recently created a home on a plot known as Eagle’s Nest. Adjacent was a new development, the Mount Royal Airpark, and with his interest piqued, David purchased a plot and began to realise his dream of a property in the Florida sun.

“It’s a superb location not just in terms of the landscaping, but because of its space and accessibility...”

“I purchased the land six years ago and had my architect in Lincolnshire draw up the plans for the perfect holiday home. It took around three months to built, and the result is a really wonderful holiday home that we’ve visited ever since.”

With fewer opportunities to travel abroad these days, David is offering the fully furnished property for sale, and believes it will appeal especially to former pilots and RAF personnel living in Lincolnshire and the surrounding area. The airpark’s 3,000ft paved runway provides easy access, and as the property, near Welaka, is located on St John’s River, it’s ideal for those with an interest in boating, too.

“The estate has over 100 homes; around half for permanent residents and half created as holiday homes. It’s a superb location not just in terms of the landscaping, with lush foliage and mature oak woodland, but because of its accessibility too.”

We’ve excellent neighbours called Buddy & Francis, and they welcome us back whenever we go over there.”

Top: Lincolnshire businessman David’s property was created in 2008 on the Mount Royal Airpark, with its aviation facilities.

“The property is around an hour and a half to two hours from the attractions of Disneyworld, Cape Canaveral and Daytona, and only an hour or so from Orlando International airport, just up Interstate Four. This ensures regular flights with Virgin via Manchester Airport. It’s also less than an hour from Sanford International Airport.”

“It’s a great property but with fewer chances to enjoy it, I’m putting it onto the market, fully furnished, as seen here, and ready to move into. It’d be lovely to think of a Lincolnshire family being able to enjoy it was much as we have, so in addition to marketing it over in the US, we want to spread the word a little over here, too, and would enjoy talking to anyone from the area who wants to enjoy their very own ‘place in the sun.’

“We’ve had RVs, boats and aircraft, and for those who want to establish a place in America it’s hard to imagine being anywhere better.

n David’s property, based on the Mount Royal Airpark, Welaka, Fl., is currently on the market for $349,000 (c.£230,000), with aviation realtor Julie Fetko +1 386-559-0160, www.albatrosslady.com.

David’s brief to his architect was to create a comfortable home with three bedrooms, two en suites, and a screen room for enjoying the Florida sunshine. A kitchen diner and large lounge area provides plenty of additional living space whilst gardens and garaging, plus space for the creation of a hangar ensures that families and those with a special interest in aviation can make best use of its location.

Above: The property comprises three bedrooms, two en suites, a living room, kitchen and screen room.

- MOTORING -

WE’VE GOOD NEWS FOR THOSE WHO THINK A RANGE ROVER IS A LITTLE DINKY, AND NOT QUITE EXPENSIVE ENOUGH. BENTLEY MOTORS HAS CREATED NOT JUST A NEW CAR, BUT A NEW CLASS OF CAR. THE BENTLEY BENTAYGA IS A ‘SUPER 4X4,’ AIMED AT ESTABLISHING A NEW CLASS OF LUXURY SUV FOR THE WELLHEELED MOTORIST SEEKING VIP TRANSPORTATION... Bentley’s new car isn’t just a new vehicle; it’s a new class of vehicle. Bentayga gives birth to the ‘super 4x4,’ larger than a Range Rover, with a weightier price tag of £160,200.

Whilst it may seem ludicrous that a firm renowned for its limousines would produce such a brutish four wheel drive, Porsche broke from its sports car precedent to produce the Cayenne and has enjoyed great success with that. The success and desirability of Range Rover has remained unchallenged for so long, and Land Rover has made a real effort to take it even more upmarket in recent years, to distinguish it from models like its semi-skimmed ‘Sport’ version.

The unprecedented luxury of the newest Range Rover, and the release of longer wheelbase models commanding six-figure prices, has proven there’s a market for 4x4s larger, and more expensive than the ‘basic’ Range Rover. Newly released is Range Rover’s long wheelbase ‘SV’ model, whilst Rolls Royce is also working on a 4x4 model, but for now, the most expensive of the lot, with the biggest engine, is the new Bentley.

The new model reaches the UK this month, and is powered by a not exactly frugal 6.0W12 engine with 900nm torque. It reaches 60mph in a worrying four seconds, and will breach 187mph if you’ve scant regard for self-preservation.

Named after the rugged Roque Bentayga peak in Gran Canaria, and the Taiga transcontinental snow forest in Russia, the new model has been an £840m investment by the firm. It will be hand-built in Crewe with each one commanding 130 man-hours. The aim was to produce the most luxurious, cosseting and capable 4x4 in the world, one which makes the Range Rover seem somehow inadequate.

THE NEW MODEL HAS SEEN AN £840M INVESTMENT BY THE FIRM. IT WILL BE HAND-BUILT IN CREWE WITH EACH ONE COMMANDING 130 MAN-HOURS...

More by our: The Bentayga is Bentley’s first x , with a price tag double that of Range Rover’s V3 Vogue SE. The Bentley has a W12 engine and costs 5130,000.

>> We’ll start with the car’s capabilities. Whilst a 3.0V6 Range Rover will return up to 44mpg on A-roads, the Bentley will struggle to return more than 30mpg, and you can expect less than half that in urban environments. The Range Rover may not be as quick on paper, but in the real world, it has all of the grunt you need for overtaking or off-roading, despite having half the number of cylinders.

The Bentley has maximum ground clearance of 225mm and can wade through water 50cm deep. The Range Rover, conversely, has 296mm of front axle clearance and can swim through water that’s 90cm deep.

Rugged: Chunky styling but serious off-road tools are on the Bentley’s options list.

THE BENTLEY BENTAYGA HAS MAXIMUM GROUND CLEARANCE OF 225MM AND CAN WADE THROUGH WATER THAT’S UP TO 50CM DEEP... Both cars have full time 4x4 transmission and eight speed automatic gearboxes, and both have air suspension.

The Range Rover, however, adds a low-range gearbox for serious off-roading and has its Terrain Response dial, to pre-empt the car’s systems according to conditions. Bentley’s similar system is an optional extra as part of the firm’s Off-Road-Specification pack. It’s not the only option on the list either, despite the car’s price tag.

OFF-ROADING IN A ROLLS ROYCE?

Would you take a £250,000 Rolls

Royce off-road? The firm seems to think some drivers would. They’re currently working on their own SUV to take on the Bentayga. It’ll be called the Cullinan and will probably command a price tag of a quarter of a million pounds.

A hands-free tailgate is optional, as is adaptive cruise control as part of the firm’s

127

1 - Lincs Pride FEB 163.qxp 04/01/2016 12:45 Page 128

Touring Specification, which also includes night vision and a head-up display.

Whilst it’s not as well-specified as a Range Rover, there’s a power tailgate, soft-close doors, navigation, heated leather seats, heated screen, electric sunroof and 4G wi-fi all standard. Customers can design their own vehicle with a choice of 15 different leathers, and 90 different exterior colours, plus a choice of 20, 21 or 22in wheels.

Top: Bentley offers a choice of hide, veneers and over 90 colours for the car’s exterior. Five heated seats come as standard.

4X4s

It says something about the intended market of the Bentley (playboys, pop stars and footballers) that the firm boasts of a 1,950 watt Naim for Bentley sound system with 18 speakers. Somehow the Range Rover feels a bit more tasteful than all that. And essentially, that’s where the Bentayga’s problem lies.

Above: The car’s VW sourced W12 engine will achieve between 30mpg and 15mpg. It emits nearly 300g CO2.

As a joint development project between the Volkswagen Audi group - which owns Bentley - and Audi, manufacturer of the Q7, the Bentayga is little more than an Audi Q7 with a (more) premium badge. If, as a driver, a Range Rover is too humdrum for your tastes, you’re either incredibly demanding or incredibly spoilt. Not only is a Range Rover our preferred option, we’d also question the need to order one in a long wheelbase, or in six-figure, 5.0 Supercharged SV trim.

A Range Rover in Vogue SE fitted with the firm’s 3.0TDV6 will cost ‘just’ £81,850. That’s half the cost of the Bentley, and a vehicle which, in our opinion, is better equipped and better off-road with an image that commands just as much respect.

THE BEST

Looking to go off the beaten track? Here’s our pick of the best cars with four wheel drive...

Range Rover

HHHHH

The best 4x4 in the world, simple as that. It’s sweet in Vogue SE trim with Land Rover’s frugal but capable 3.0V6 engine.

Outlander

HHHHH

The plug-in PHEV 4x4 is best for a company car driver for low tax bills or a petrol-free life if your daily commute is less than 30 miles.

Isuzu D-Max

HHHHH

It’s a bit of a brute compared to domestic SUVs, but this pick-up is VERY good for farmers and those who enjoy outdoor life.

Volvo XC90

HHHHH

If you need seven seats, the new Volvo is spacious and stylish. Limited off-road abilities mean it’s a bit of a Chelsea Tractor.
