welcome letter

Whatever you love about Lincolnshire, whether it’s the panoramic countryside views, the rolling undulations of the Lincolnshire Wolds or Lincoln, the beating heart of this great county, it’s celebrated at the Lincolnshire Show.

In this edition, we have very patriotically and proudly celebrated every aspect of this beautiful, underestimated part of the world, as we will be doing at our marquee around the main ring at the Lincolnshire Show on both days. Please do come over and see us if you are at the show;

our favourite part about Lincolnshire is its people and we love meeting our clients.

We especially love the county at this time of year. Not only will we be at the show, but in this edition, we have enjoyed picking our own strawberries on Willows Farm and we’ve even had a scoop of Dennett’s Ice Cream in the Bailgate. Our best wishes for a wonderful month,

ASIAN HORNETS, WIPING OUT BEE POPULATIONS, HAS BEEN TRACED AND FOUND IN BOSTON

Fiction set in the Fens

LINCOLNSHIRE The new novel by award winning writer Robert Edric explores life in The Fens in1954. Mercury Falling is about the post-war chill where people will do almost anything to stay alive. Penguin Books writes, ‘With his keen eye and trademark candour, Robert Edric takes his readers to the most desolate of places, to explore what a man is capable of doing when he has nothing left to lose.’ ‘It is a tough winter; the temperatures have fallen too low too quickly and the floods are the worst anyone can remember. Most people have lost everything but there are some who have found themselves eager for the chance at a new start. For Jimmy Devlin, it’s a little of both.Forced from his home by an uncompromising bailiff, Jimmy has nothing to his name and the prospect of work digging urgently needed drains could be the opportunity he’s been waiting for. But Jimmy, it seems, has a knack for finding trouble. Before long, he’s caught up in the wrong business with the people from the fairground passing. But, on the run from the law, he has nowhere else to turn.’

BOSTON asian hornets are bad news as they can wipe out bee populations in a very short space of time. If you do see one, you must report it as it is a non-native species of england. the latest sighting was seen on a cauliflower in Bury, greater manchester and was later traced back to a farm in Boston. Defra’s Nicola Spence said: “We are taking swift and robust action to locate and investigate any nests in the Bury and Boston, they pose no greater threat to humans than normal bees. Defra says at this time of year the hornet is likely to be a newly emerged queen which is looking to establish a nest.

HIGHLIGHTS

the Local Sculptor

Bee-VaNgeLISt

Sculptor Theodore Gillick takes his inspiration from nature, and as a keen botanist too, has found that keeping honey bees is not only a rewarding pastime, but yields the ability to harvest delicious honey with seasonal variations... What you have to love about Stamford and is not only the beauty of the countryside and all the pretty houses, but the people who inhabit them. you may have heard about the gillick family who live in Priory house. Perhaps the charming children have crossed your path before or maybe you’re a very fortunate owner of a theo gillick sculpture. ruth gillick may have dazzled you with her warm smile; either way, the energy that this family holds is something quite remarkable.

We were fortunate enough to visit theo and his family recently, not to talk his latest sculptures (although we can’t resist touching on that a little) but to discuss the business of his bees. Apis mellifera prove a respite for the intensity that comes hand in hand with creating masterpieces. theo is currently working on human sculptures but in the past he has mainly worked with animals.

theo captures an animal or human in their natural state, no editing, no re-design, but a perfectly sculptured homage to their natural, unconscious beauty.

as we sat in the living room, an audience congregated around theo as he began to talk. a two-year-old Dulcima perched on the sofa, heart-breaking blue eyes looking up at Daddy in fascination while Florence and her cousin Pia listened as they lent against the wall, so much focus in this distracted world.

an ever-growing Louis perched on a chair, ready at any moment to contribute his own extraordinary knowledge and we were later joined by maya, a family friend who seemed

equally enthralled at the trials and tribulations of nature.

It all began for the gillick’s after a poor attempt at growing various plants and vegetables in the kitchen garden of their stunning 18th century house. theo decided that lack of pollination was a big problem and with his scientific, botanist education and his wife ruth’s background in ecology, they decided to venture into bee keeping.

theo bought three traditional beehives in august 2014. he had all the beekeeping manuals and books a man could ever hope

Theo has around 42 species of trees & shrubs within 100m his garden, and one colony covers about 2900 acres collecting pollen and nectar so there will be a huge combination in the summer honey. We tried some honey that was collected from the lime trees and it was delicious with almost a spearmint flavour to it beneath all the sweetness. n

THE BEES AND THE TREES...

>> for but in the first three months, what could go wrong, went wrong.

“We had everything from wasps invading the beehives to dying queens,” says theo, clearly still a bit traumatised by those teething issues. theo pulled through this time with the generous help of his mentor, alastair Stirling, a man from ketton who’s father was the infamous David Stirling who founded the SaS (see, that’s another local gem!). It was alastair’s guidance that may have stopped theo killing off his hives entirely. Just four months down the line of this baptism of fire and you’ll no longer see your average beehive anywhere near Priory house.

theo explained that the original beehive design, the basic structure that a chap called reverend Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth designed in 1852, is still largely accepted as the standard home for bees today.

Langstroth constructed his hives so that bees built their honey comb in his wooden frames instead of wherever they liked, and these could be lifted out and inspected. It was utterly ingenious, but that’s about 150 years ago. many beekeepers have tried new designs, but the advantages are small so little has changed at all. theo puts this lack of progress down to there simply being not enough money in beekeeping to invest in r&D; and standard hives ‘do the job’ in many respects. Nevertheless, after pulling together knowledge from keepers all over the planet and what theo refers to as a lot of ‘beginners hubris,’ the new design of hive that is taking great care of theo’s bees came about.

he doesn’t give too much away about the real technicalities of his invention only that after five trials and re-designs it allows the bees to sense and smell the temperature outside of their very well-insulated hive. the colonies are huge and healthy and he has averaged about ten times as much honey from one hive as a run-of-the-mill hive could. In the middle of summer, theo expects to have around one million bees between his ten hives, but with a few novel management methods, only takes a quarter of the work of an old hive, all thanks to a little bit of imagination when it comes to their habitat.

“We’ve got some nice colonies this time,” he says, with a smile before recounting tales of some of the more violent broods they’ve had that have resulted in various stinging stories and his son Louis looking like a Disney character for a short time after being stung on his upper lip.” 20

“the whole family have suits; they are very much a team. the character of the colony relies on that of the queen bee or ‘mother bee’ as she is called everywhere else. “If she’s feisty, it’s likely you’ll get the odd sting but if you have a kinder strain you could make it through a summer without needing to reach for the antihistamines once.”

theo has labelled his honey St. Benedict’s after the Benedictine monks who are likely to have last kept bees at St. Leonard’s Priory, now buried underneath his garden, in the 1530s. you can buy the honey if you make your way to the Friday market in Stamford. the earlier the better... because it’s creating quite the buzz. n

The natural home for bees is living trees. Trees have been important in Theo’s development of his own hives because whereas we know bees don’t manage the temperature in their hives, we have overlooked what the tree does. Tree trunks respond in real time to ambient temperature staying about the same as the air (have you ever felt a hot tree!). But they never go above 34°C, and never less than 0.1°C above freezing. And guess what? A nest of bees is also 34°C.

Trees don’t let bees nests boil or freeze. That’s why it’s so important to think about the natural relationship between bees and their tree homes if we want to keep them well, healthy and strong. n For more information on beekeeping, see www.bbka.org.uk.

Stamford Shakespeare Company

2018’S SEASON WILL INCLUDE THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR AND THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL... TOLETHORPE

FROM JUNE TO AUGUST

2018 STAMFORD SHAKESPEARE SEASON

the three plays for 2018 include two Shakespeare plays and as always, a wild card, which this year will be the School for Scandal by richard Brinsley Sheridan. the first story - the merchant of Venice - is a story set in 1596 where antonio, an honourable merchant, enters into a chilling contract to enable his friend to woo a beautiful heiress. richard Brinsley Sheridan’s classic comedy sparkles with wit, verbal brilliance and an

intricate plot exposing the lives and loves of fashionable London society. Sir Peter teazle’s simple country bride becomes leader of a group of scandalmongers who tear their friends’ reputations to shreds. Can anyone escape the outrageous gossip of, amongst others, the aptly named Benjamin Backbite, Lady Sneerwell, mrs Candour and Snake? and the third and final play you can enjoy this summer in July and august is the merry Wives of Windsor, a classic Shakespeare tale. the old rogue Sir John Falstaff has returned penniless from

the war and plans to seduce two ‘merry wives.’ Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy is his nearest approach to a farce, with people forever rushing in and out of doors, including a comic Welsh parson, a manic French doctor and a madly jealous husband. Depicting middle-class family life in an english provincial town when women are finding a new role in post-war Britain. all three will be sure to entertain and the location at tolethorpe is always worth the journey anyway.

HERITAGE It’s the local company with a national reputation for excellence. Opening 80 years prior to M&S, Rob Davis looks back at the origins of Oldrids and Downtown The Oldrids name was first heard in the town of Boston when draper, mercer, hosier, haberdasher and funeral director John Oldrid, who was born near Spilsby in Hagworthingham in 1778, moved his business to Boston. The business passed down to John Oldrid III (far right) in 1831 and though his wife ran the business until her death, a lack of male heirs meant Oldrid & Co was put up for sale in 1906 whereupon Sydney Smith purchased it. Smith had a somewhat irascible management style and in leaner times would even add small amounts to his customers’ accounts.

After nine years the business passed into the ownership of Mr Robert Isaac, the first of a local retail dynasty which endures today (see opposite). The war years saw a decline in trade as there was less money to spend and fewer resources to trade. Nevertheless the business thrived with new opportunities to sell furniture and kitchen appliances in the more optimistic decades of the 1950s and 1960s. The 1970s saw the introduction of the Oldrids otter; a familiar logo for a decade. Today the business sells over 250,000 lines and keeps up with changing trends of fashions and home furnishings. n

Looking After Our People Whilst the company has grown, its core values of looking after both customers and employees alike continues. All members of staff are entitled to a free ‘soup and sandwich’ lunch, and staff enjoy 20% discount with two members of staff sitting on the board as directors. There are generous long service awards for employees like Sheila Hayes, who has been employed by the company for 45 years, and 15% of the company’s shares are held in trust for the benefit of employees in the form of dividend payments. n

1804 John Oldrid & Richard Hyde founded Oldrids. 1831 Richard Hyde sold his share of Oldrids. 1905 Sydney Smith bought Oldrids. 1915 The Isaac family took over Oldrids. 1960 Oldrids New Street opened selling furniture. 1981 Downtown Boston opened including car garage. 1985 Downtown Boston was refurbished, no longer sells cars. 1989 Downtown Grantham superstore opened. 1998 Downtown Grantham enlarged, including the addition of another storey. 2000 Downtown Garden Centre opened. 2003 Pescod Hall is moved.

The Isaac Family: 1915-2018 Ever since the Isaac family purchased Oldrids from Sydney Smith, the family have guided the development of the company right into the 21st century over four generations. A true family business, Martin Isaac is Chairman of the Oldrids board, Peter Isaac is Finance Director, whilst Rachel Emmitt (née Isaac) and Roberta Isaac work in the Boston ‘in town’ store’s restaurant. Richard Isaac works in the furniture department

of the Downtown Boston store, whilst Dawn Isaac and Ruth Stephenson (née Isaac) are Non-Executive Directors. The company also employs no fewer than four members of the Chester family and five members of the Allen family, too! Husband and wife team Andrew & Joan Brader, have worked together at Oldrids for 40 years! n

“There’s nothing more motivating than to be part of a 200 year old business that has supported local Lincolnshire families over many generations...”

Below: Peter Isaac is Finance Director at Oldrids.

2004 Oldrids celebrated its 200th birthday. 2005 Oldrids & Downtown Boston are both refurbished. 2009 Oldrids launches its first ecommerce website. 2016 Oldrids Scunthorpe opened, delivering great quality products at great prices. 2017 Lincoln and Gainsborough stores close, staff are relocated to other branches. “Modern retail must embrace change and technology." "Bricks and mortar retailing is relevant. Physical retail is not dead. But lacklustre retails is.” says MD Richard Broadhead. 2017 Oldrids announces plans for 2020 opening of a new Designer Outlet development in Grantham. n

THE FUTURE With 700 employees, 250,000 lines and 500,000sq ft retail space across Lincolnshire, Oldrids & Downtown are names that have been synonymous with quality and choice for over 200 years... but in the era of online shopping and large retailers, what does the next two centuries hold for the stores? Oldrids & Downtown are names that have proved synonymous with quality and choice in retail for over 200 years. It’s one of the few family owned/independent retailers left in the UK and enjoys an enviable reputation nationally as well as employing over 700 people locally. At the helm is Richard Broadhead, Managing Director and the man responsible for ensuring a steady ship in an uncertain time for retail. Richard took on the role in April 2017, and in addition to protecting Oldrids’ reputation, is looking to secure the company’s reputation in retail for the next 200 years as well, with ambitious plans for the creation of a designer outlet village which could open as soon as 2020. “Retail is in my DNA - I love it,” he says. “And I  feel a profound responsibility for a heritage brand like ours. We’ve 700 families who depend on the company and many long standing members - one who has served for 45 years.” “But we can - and we need to adapt to changing trends in retail too. Our values can remain constant and we can mitigate the need to make profit with a social conscience as we grow, trade and as we embark on improving our online shopping experience - 40% of which is local custom - whilst developing our Downtown site near Grantham too.”

As Pride goes to press the company hopes to secure the go-ahead for its new designer outlet. The site will form part of a wider redesign of the Gonerby Junction site including the creation of a new garden centre. It will include more than 220,000sq ft of retail space, the creation of 107 designer outlet stores with some big names already secured but subject to an embargo. The 25 acre site will also include 2,000 parking spaces, 22,000sq ft of leisure attractions and will inject £125m into the local economy.

Opposite: Richard Broadhead took over as Managing Director in 2017. Bottom: Gonerby Junction will be subject to a £125m Designer Outlet development.

“One of our main strengths as a business is that we own the freehold for each of our five sites,” says Richard. “The Designer Outlet will capitalise on our site and offer the chance to redevelop it for the 21st century.” “In conjunction with a new online retail strategy and a new head of e-commerce, it’s important to me that we face the next 200 years with strength and optimism. But we will still hold onto the values that have ensured we’re still one of the most trusted and most well-respected independent retailers in the area.” n

“The Designer Outlet at Gonerby Junction will capitalise on our site, totally redeveloping it for the 21st century...”

In addition to its hotel, bar and restaurant provisions, the White hart also has an exceptional space for entertaining.

their self-contained room has space for 80-100 guests and has its own bar. It’s perfect for weddings, and is primarily used as a wedding venue, but the space can also be used for charity events and balls too. On our visit to the grille restaurant, we were able to try a wide range from the chefs

as their new spring and summer menus were being tasted by the waitering team. as well as concentrating on local suppliers, the menus are seasonal too, offering something different for regular diners throughout the year. Our personal recommendations from the new spring and summer menu are the rolled loin of rabbit, the pan fried cod supreme and the hay smoked rump of lamb. every thursday throughout the year, you can enjoy Steak Night. Choose from three cuts of meat - steak, lamb and chicken - two sides, a garnish and drink all for just £15. after dinner, you can also enjoy live acoustic entertainment performed every thursday.

Sunday Lunch is a very popular menu of course, but so too is the ‘Five of harts.’ It’s the lunchtime menu with the choice of five mains, starters and desserts.

We take our hats off to the managers, chefs and waitering team at the grille restaurant. their improvements have transformed dining in the Bail, and we can see these changes making the White hart a hotspot for dining in the city.

Cream of the Crop

Everyone with a sweet tooth in Lincolnshire will know of the delights of Dennetts Ice Cream, but only a few will know its extensive history and four generations... Main: Robin and his wife Clare who works in the Lincoln store.

Bragging is our forté. When a yellowbelly entures outside of the county borders, and someone remarks about how great the food is from their area, it’s only natural for us to correct them.

We’ve all been guilty of it. When visiting Cornwall or Scarborough, you may hear someone remark that their ice cream is the best in Britain. you won’t be able to stop yourself from thinking ‘I doubt it’ll come close to Dennetts.’ On a warm sunny day, scaling Steep hill in Lincoln is an arduous task, but it’s all worth it when you reach Dennetts Ice Cream Parlour at the top, serving 30 refreshing flavours of delicious, dairy ice cream.

everyone is familiar with this Lincolnshire staple, but only a handful will know its rich heritage, a long history giving the company enough time to perfect their flavours.

robin Dennett is the current man in charge, proud of the company’s fabulous reputation with locals but he very modestly credits it to his predecessors.

“It’s my grandparents arthur and mary who started the ice cream business in 1926,” says robin. “During the first world war, arthur bought his dairy farm in hundleby. they had a herd of Lincoln red cattle, and sold the milk for a penny a pint!” “they decided to add value to their product, and churn it into ice cream butter and cheese

selling it from the farm. the ice creams were called ‘licks’ back then.”

“the Spilsby Shop was opened in 1934 and we took over the ice cream parlour in the Bailgate in 1995 to reach out to a wider audience. the Spilsby shop closed in the 1970s but Lincoln’s parlour is still open and has its own tearoom now. the Lincoln parlour has a 14th century vaulted ceiling in its seating area, and we serve our famous Wolds Whopper here!” In arthur’s time, they just sold plain ice cream - no vanilla flavouring or any kind of flavouring. It wasn’t until his son eric, robin’s father, took over the business that the wide variety of flavours were introduced.

“My father came home to work with my grandfather after the Second World War in 1948,” says Robin. “He was an electrician in the RAF stationed in Italy. It was Eric’s time spent in Italy, the capital of ‘gelato,’ that changed the nature of Dennetts.”

“The dairy farm was still running, so at the time, my father was still bottling milk and grading and packing eggs. He would’ve been delivering milk too; we had 12 milk rounds back when bottled milk was still popular, but this was slowly on the decline.”

“Inspired by the Italian’s passion for ice cream and their wealth of exotic flavours, Eric returned and started to introduce flavours to Dennetts’s plain ice cream.” When Eric introduced different flavours, sales skyrocketed. It was still a new concept to have flavoured ice cream, and with high quality milk from the Friesian cows, the ice cream was delicious and started to gain its reputation. “Arthur had seven grandchildren, so we knew that once my grandfather passed the farm and the business down, the farm would unfortunately have to be sold,” says Robin. “There were too many of us to split it between.”

“However, I had been working for the farm for several years so I took on the ice cream business. We don’t milk our own cows now unfortunately, but we use a Lincolnshire dairy for our milk and cream, to ensure the quality and flavour is kept.” Dennetts in the 21st century has accumulated many awards from the Ice Cream Alliance

TIMELINE of Dennetts

2004: Robin took over the business 14 years ago after Eric passed away and the dairy farm was sold. 2016: Kate, the next generation of Dennetts joined the team. The fifth generation was born!

2017: The Spilsby parlour reopened as Sweet Vanilla by Kate and her partner; fourth generation of Dennetts.

and various other respectable awarding bodies, offer 30 flavours and also offer frozen yoghurt and sorbets too now.

Ice Cream

INTERESTING FACTS:

Dennetts is sold across the whole of the county largely through the Lincolnshire Cooperative. the fourth generation of Dennetts has opened a new shop called Sweet Vanilla in Spilsby selling the ice cream alongside sweets and other goodies. the fifth generation of Dennetts has just been born!

Vanilla: Most of the vanilla used to make ice cream comes from Madagascar and Indonesia.

Toppings: Chocolate syrup is the world’s most popular topping.

Dennetts is also sold to restaurants, pubs and cafés, as well as the kinema in the Woods and weddings as well. they have a special cart and trailer they take to weddings and fairs. “We believe the reason why we’re successful and why we’ve been around for nearly 100 years, is first of all the quality of our product. using local milk from high quality cattle, and sourcing the very best flavourings for our products has been the key. I also think the service we provide has really contributed to our growing success.” In a Pride exclusive, robin discussed the secret recipe and ingredients to Dennetts’s exceptional ice cream. after all, it’s the quality of its ingredients that makes it so special rather than the process.

“We make batches of around 160 - 170 litres of ice cream - 1,150 - 1,250 cornets - using a base of fresh milk and double cream we add the other ingredients and pasteurised to 85ºC. It is then slowly cooled and aged for 24 hours.” “the mixture is then flavoured then frozen. We then use a machine to churn the mixture; it does exactly the same as what my grandfather would’ve done by hand all those years ago!”

although robin’s favourite flavour is coffee, the general public still prefer vanilla. around 25% of what Dennetts sell is simple vanilla ice cream. their five bestsellers overall are mint chocolate chip ice cream, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and toffee.

Licks: It takes about 50 licks to finish a single scoop ice cream cone.

Brainfreeze: This occurs when ice cream touches the roof of your mouth. Left: Arthur and Mary, the first generation of Dennetts Ice Cream. Above: Mary standing outside the Spilsby ice cream parlour or creamery.

to my surprise, rum & raisin was not on this list! In my personal opinion, Dennetts rum & raisin is by far the best ice cream around. In a year, Dennetts will produce between 65,000 to 75,000 litres of ice cream - that means yellowbellies will consume 445,000 to 525,000 cornets a year!

unfortunately, Dennetts will not be at the Lincolnshire Show, but robin will definitely be there as he is the Patron of the Lincoln red Cattle society.

he’s been at Dennetts for 38 years, but before this, he was a shepherd, and is still very passionate about shepherding. he will be providing commentary on the sheep classes at the Lincolnshire Show. Dennetts is comparable only to the Italians in our proud Lincolnshire opinions, so next time that’s ever questioned by the Cornish, yorkies or Devonians, remind them of our superb provisions of ice cream and its outstanding heritage and reputation in the local area.

Pets: 1 in 5 people admit to sharing their ice cream with their pet! Record: The world’s tallest ice cream cone was over nine feet tall and it was scooped in Italy. USA: Behind cookies, ice cream stands as the bestselling treat in America.

1300s: Marco Polo brings an early form of ice cream to Europe. July: July is National Ice Cream Month.

Rocky Road: This was the first widely available flavour other than vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.

The Biggest Consumers: The average American consumes 48 pints of ice cream each year! 87% admit to having ice cream in their freezer at any given time. n For more information on Dennetts Ice Cream, please call the Spilsby wholesalers on 01790 752573, or alternatively call the Lincoln parlour on 01522 511447. Take Your Pick at WILLOWS Farm

There’s nothing better than fresh strawberries and raspberries on a summer’s day, and you can’t get them any fresher than right off the stalk. You can pick your own fruit at Willows Farm near Skegness thanks to David Pridgeon... Fresh strawberries with cream is a cliché of a British summer. It’s a picnic highlight, Wimbledon classic and welcome treat after a day in the garden. you won’t get a fresher strawberry than one that you have handpicked right off the stalk. there’s something traditional and simple about picking fruit on a hot summer’s day when they’re still warm to the touch and full to bursting with sticky sweet juices.

We visited David Pridgeon on his family farm near Skegness as he was getting ready for another busy season of fruit picking. Willows Farm is largely arable but in 1997, when David returned from college, he thought it would be good to diversify the business into fruit and fruit picking.

“I started the fruit farm at a time when picking your own fruit was really popular,” says David. “It still is but it has definitely seen a resurgence in the past couple of years.”

“David sells his fruit to wholesalers and at local markets as well as offering the Pick your Own service, and it isn’t just strawberries you can try from Willows Farm. there are also raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, gooseberries and plums to pick and eat. “I think what’s really special about picking your own fruit is first of all how fresh the fruit is and how good it tastes, but also how local the fruit is.” “you literally cannot get less food miles even if you tried, and I think the buying habits of

It’s very important to support the local economy.” “It’s also a way to get the children out of the house, off the gadgets, in the fresh open air, eating healthy fruit and doing something at a minimal cost that they will love.”

HOW TO PICK THE BEST...

the fresh fruit including the strawberries from early June till the end of august, but you can also pick pumpkins in time for pumpkin soup and scary carved faces at halloween on the farm in October.

Look for plump, shiny, tender berries, with a good, bright colour and a sweet aroma, preferably with their leafy green calyx and stalk still attached. Avoid picking slightly mushy or mouldy berries, especially if you’re keeping the strawberries for later.

“the diversification into fruit on the farm has now taken over and despite it only taking up 10 hectares of the 500 hectare arable farm, it is the most labour intensive and the biggest part of the business.”

When we visited Willows Farm in early may, there had been a recent heatwave so the interest in David’s strawberries from wholesalers and markets had skyrocketed. David and his team of 20 were busy preparing everything for the start of the season and the expected high demand due to the warmer weather. however, due to the unusual weather we’ve had this year, jumping from snow to sun, it has had an affect on when they’ve been able to plant and grow the fruit.

“We plant from march till June, but we grow most of our wholesale produce in polytunnels. this allows us to be flexible with cropping, and lets us stagger growing and production out so we have a level amount of fruit throughout the season rather than one high peak.”

If you would prefer to buy your own fruit from Willows Farm rather than picking your own, there is a farm shop that you can go to on the site. If you’re worried about accessibility there is field grown strawberries, but also ‘table top’ fruit production grown in rows so there is no need to bend down. you can either get your ready picked fruit or pick your own every day from 9am until 6pm in the season which will start mid-June this year at Chapel St. Leonards and from 10am until 5pm at Saltfleetby.

at Willows Farm you can also buy locally grown Lincolnshire potatoes, carrots, beetroot, onions, cauliflowers, cabbages, lettuce, spring onions and tomatoes. there will also be other seasonal fruit and veg on offer including pod peas, sweetcorn, runner beans, cherries, plums, greengages and much more.

If you’re not heading to the east coast this summer, there are a number of other Pick your Own fruit farms across the county and one that may be a little bit closer to home. If you’re in grantham, try Syston Park Farm 62

(01400 250000), or if you’re further north, there’s Braders near grimsby. In Lincoln, Spinney Farm is a great place to pick your own fruit (01522 703865), and Naylor Farms in Spalding is also a great one to visit (01406 370439). however, if you would like to head to David’s lovely fruit farm and try your own locally produced strawberries this summer, visit him on the way to Skegness! alternatively, visit www.willowsfarm.co.uk or call David on 07771 696001 for more information. n

If you’re buying a punnet, always check that the underside of the punnet isn’t stained; that means the lower level of berries has been crushed. Large strawberries tend to have a higher water content, so will be less flavourful. Choose the small to medium-sized ones.

Positioned in the peaceful setting of West Deeping, Cromwell house has been the charming happy home of mr and mrs aldred for ten years. the couple moved away from Stamford after they married for some more space as two families became one. On first impressions, Iain aldred says you’ll be amazed by the lovely situation, “It’s very quiet and private,” he says, “But equally easy to travel to Stamford, Peterborough or commute to London.” the entrance into the house is spacious and welcoming but come may, you’ll mostly want to look at the incredible georgian façade of the house with the charming Wisteria gently hugging the beautiful stone work. Wisteria’s are magical as they are known to live for up to 100 years and even older. there’s actually a 1,200-year-old wisteria tree in Japan. this long-life bestows the symbolic meaning of immortality and longevity to the wisteria. “may will be wonderful,” says Iain, “the garden will look beautiful and the wisteria will come out.”

as you enter the atmospheric Dining hall with its raw stone floor, stone fireplace, alcove and shutters, you’ll feel almost weightless from this spacious first impression. the drawing room is a wonderful double aspect room with original restored light oak parquet flooring, French doors to the garden and a stone fireplace. the kitchen is ideal for informal kitchen suppers has room for a large table, there is an island and French doors to the kitchen courtyard too. the kitchen also features the most amazing pre-historic marble on the surfaces that are very attractive. this property (including the kitchen) was renovated by the previous owner in 2005.

there is also a sitting room with an inglenook fireplace and wood burner although if you wanted to take the wood burner out and have an open fire place, it is all fully functional. Iain’s wife Susanna says that people often comment on the beautiful exposed beams in the snug, “there are lots of features that give this property character,” she says. there is also a study, utility room, two cloakrooms and an internal triple garage. “the windows look South over the main part of the garden,” says Susanna, “It’s a completely unspoilt view.”

82

the gardens are a treat, with formal box hedging and a stunning walled garden, fruit garden, stream and beautifully tended lawns. the gardens themselves needed quite a bit of attention when the aldred’s moved in and they sought the help of renowned garden designer Bunny guinness.

“BUNNY IS A CHARMING LADY. SHE CAME OVER FOR ONE DAY AND HER POWERS ARE JUST AMAZING..!”

“Bunny is a charming lady,” says Iain. “She came over for one day and her powers are just amazing.”

you’ll see Bunny’s touches with the walled garden, where hornbeams were planted and the courtyard garden was transformed into the idyllic space that it is today. Nature is thriving and Iain explained that the neighbours are currently putting in a wild flower meadow next door so you don’t have to worry about the peaceful setting being disturbed. n

The Sack Store in Boston is a retail experience unlike any other. It is an Aladdin’s cave providing inspiration for the home with something for everyone. Cosy corners in a setting of architectural splendour, roaring fires and an award-winning café only begin to tell the Sack Store story...

An Industrial Estate in Boston is not where you might expect to find an historic building of architectural splendour. you might be even more surprised to find it sensitively preserved, full of everything you will ever want for interior design and an award-winning café. this is the Sack Store. It is an experience. you will always remember it.

Despite its magnificent doors and windows surrounded by Virginia creeper, it isn’t until you walk into the door that you begin to understand that you have walked into an aladdin’s cave providing inspiration for homes of every type and style. From the huge selection of beautiful tiles, many of which are kept in stock, to the stove showroom; from Farrow and Ball paint to pictures; from lamps and chandeliers to mirrors and sofas; from country clothing to comfy chairs; from soap and candles to wheat bags and accessories that make your house into a home, there is something for everyone in the Sack Store. the café is open from 9am until 4pm every day except Sunday when it opens at 11am. Nowhere in Lincolnshire will you find a café with such a setting and ambience to treat yourself to breakfast, relax over coffee and cake, or meet friends for lunch with special afternoon tea.

the Sack Store appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1859. It was originally built next to the railway line for the purpose of supplying sacks for potatoes supporting farmers from aberdeen to London. as Boston was a significant railway town, the Sack Store was ideally placed in the heart of an agricultural region yet near to the docks. even nowadays a trip to the Sack Store will take you through fields with panoramic skies or the Lincolnshire Wolds with its rolling countryside.

Since Chris Isaac bought the building in 1990, he brought it back to life and the Sack Store opened in 1992. Chris has never looked back and four years ago opened a sister store, the Stamford garden Centre. known for being Lincolnshire’s premier supplier of wood burning stoves, the Sack Store has one of the widest selections in the country and supports sales with a full stove survey and installation service that 106

“FROM DESIGN INSPIRATION TO WOOD BURNING STOVES, THE SACK STORE MAKES YOUR HOUSE INTO A HOME...” is second to none. Clearview, aga, Broseley and hunter stoves are on display next to rayburn, everhot and esse ranges and magnificent radiators.

Furniture includes famous sofa makes such as tetrad, Duresta and harris tweed and there is a fabulous range of practical country clothing for ladies and gents from harkila. Where else would you find an eclectic mix like this in unique surroundings? With a warm welcome, personal service and prices that are often better than those on the internet, the Sack Store has it all. n For more information please call 01205 310101 or visit www.sackstore.co.uk.

Stamford

Garden Centre

Situated on the outskirts of the Georgian town of Stamford, you will find the sister store to the Sack Store. This is not your typical garden centre. No surprise there given its owner’s approach. Like the Sack Store, it is an experience. With a superb cafÊ, open seven days a week, boasting fantastic menus and an outside seating area, the garden centre has become a favourite with locals. It is busy throughout the day and you would be wise to book if you are thinking of going. Whilst there, you will find Simpsons, an award-winning butcher as well as bread from the Hambleton Bakery and a great selection of wine. The showroom is packed with many of the products on display in the Sack Store, including wood burning stoves, furniture, country clothing, rugs and gifts, matching indoor and outdoor tiles as well as everything that you would expect of a garden centre. Pots, plants, garden maintenance products and furniture might sound ordinary to some. The new building, a design inspiration that is home for these things, will change your mind. And nowhere else will you find products of quality like this at prices to match the internet.

Stoneware WIth FLaIr

Exploring the rustic charm of stoneware with Golding, Young & Mawer, Chartered Auctioneers and Valuer who specialise in arts and antique surveying...

Stoneware in various forms has been produced throughout the world for centuries. It is defined as pottery fired at around 1200 degrees centigrade producing a robust, dense body, ably used for fine tableware, ornaments, insulators and even chemical vessels. advertising pieces of the 19th and 20th centuries are providing popular as either collectables or interior decorator’s pieces, beautifully juxtaposing with modern furnishings. the naive charm of Lincolnshire and other local stoneware coupled with the vast array of designs; from beer bottles, other tavern related items, butter churns, flagons and even political flasks prominent in areas such as horncastle and the array of advertising styles and varied names mean there are vast numbers of pieces to buy and a great number of collectors. take the humble beer bottle for example: its birth in glass can be traced back to a Dr alexander Nowell, some 440 years ago in hertfordshire. 18th century stoneware pieces are rare and it was in the 19th century that porter (a drink similar to stout) began to be bottled in any number. Whitbread were a big producer of pottery vessels in the 1870s and local firms ANTIQUES

followed suit. taking grantham alone, we have seen several examples recently by Johnson, Basker & Fletcher, r J Boyall and the illustrated Summerbys type. the illustrated Buttercup Dairy butter crock, produced by a W Buchan in the very late 19th century, in Portobello, Scotland is a rare, quirky survivor. It would’ve had a lid, but the pail is in excellent condition for an everyday item, proving its hardiness. We see many examples of local advertising stoneware, pick a place: alford, Lincoln, grantham, Southwell, Stamford, Bourne, and you will almost certainly find something. Pieces can be inexpensive but look fantastic in modern dwellings; there is a lot available and it needs to be cherished, bought and enjoyed. n With best wishes, Craig Bewick, MRICS. OUTDOORS

Nature

NOteS

The summer months is when nature really thrives. You’ll see an abundance of colour and flowers in Lincolnshire gardens in June, especially orchids...

Overpopulating

OrChIDS There are more than 25,000 orchid species in the world. That means there are four times more orchids than bird species and four times more orchid species than mammals!

June is definitely the best month for orchids. you’ll spot them along road banks and in old grassland across the county, especially the common spotted, heath spotted and pyramidal orchids, adding something new and pleasant to our natural surroundings. you’ll also see dogrose and plenty of honeysuckle, attracting moths of all sizes like brimstone and swallowtail, who are tempted in by the scent of the flower especially on warm evenings. On downland and on road verges you’ll see a flutter of butterflies. the most common butterflies you will spot includes meadow browns, 112

common blues and lots of large skippers. you may even see the odd glow worm on woodland rides or along hedgebanks. glow worms are most prolific in limestone areas.

If you’re out in the garden, look out for leaf-cutter bees. they carve small circles in your leaves to create their nests. Further south, stag beetles will also be searching through leaf litter.

Look out for the rather frightening looking, but completely harmless, cockchafer beetles as they blunder about on warm evenings. you’ll be able to spot these especially over farmland.

Leafcutter or

hONey?

If you’re struggling to tell the difference between honey bees and leafcutter bees, here’s some top tips... On first sighting many species of solitary bees can be mistaken for honey bees or even hoverflies.

It can be very difficult to tell the difference between honey bees and leafcutters, especially if the leafcutter is not engaged in the activity of cutting leaves or building its nest, but instead, is foraging on flowers.

Above: Guillemots on the east coast in Lincolnshire. Opposite/Top: A pyramidal orchid you’ll spot on road verges. Opposite/Bottom: The leaf-cutter bee doing what it does best! Opposite/Left: Meadows are full of wildlife before they are cut to make hay.

Near the Lincolnshire coasts, look out for guillemots and kittiwakes as they fight for space. you’ll also spot gull and tern colonies, but you’ll probably hear them first, as they squawk for food.

Other birds around the county perhaps in your garden - to look out for, includes pied wigtails and spotted flycatchers. these birds you will most likely catch busily feeding their families. In rivers you can spot sheets of water crowfoot. Sea trout will be making their way upstream to breed.

their relatives the brown trout are rising to hatches of mayflies,

that also make prey for metallic green damselflies such as the banded demoiselle.

the most vibrant habitats in June will be meadows, and Lincolnshire has plenty of them. they will be filled with butterflies and plenty of early summer flowers; they are wildlife havens.

traditional meadows are cut for hay in summer to provide winter food for animals. this management leads to a great diversity of plants and animals. they are at their best just before the first cut so make sure you visit a meadow before it is cut for hay, full of diversity and life. n

One giveaway lies in their methods for collecting pollen. Worker honey bees, like bumblebees, collect pollen in their pollen baskets or ‘corbicula’ on the hind legs, then transport it back to the hive or nest. Leafcutter bees do not have pollen baskets, so instead, they collect pollen on hairs on the underside of their abdomens. When the bee is carrying pollen, it is quite visible as a pale yellow colour.

DOuBLeDay 100 Years of John Deere with

Three generations of experience, and over 40 years of working with local farmers, plus the backing of one of the world’s best brands. Doubleday celebrates John Deere Tractors at the 2018 Lincolnshire Show...

Doubleday of Swineshead, holbeach and kings Lynn have been helping to bring home the harvest ever since John Doubleday set up the business in 1974. today anyone from domestic consumers with modest gardens or smallholdings right up to the largest farming estates can take advantage of the Doubleday groups expertise with machinery from John Deere, plus brands such as kramer, Väderstad, maschio and Bomford turner to name just a few!

Of these brands it’s John Deere which has used its farming experience to create a really good range of products for use in the domestic market, says Director zoë Spencer.

“From walk behind mowers priced from £480 to a range of ride-on lawn tractors from around £2,300, we have products for every size of plot,” says zoë. Within all the Doubleday branches they also offer a range of adults and children’s

clothing, footwear by well known wellies brand Le Chameau and outdoor clothing by musto, as well as a wide variety of childrens toys from the small matchbox tractors to the battery powered and pedal ride-on tractors.

this year is a very special year for John Deere as one hundred years ago, Deere & Company entered the tractor business. “today John Deere is the world’s leading manufacturer of agricultural tractors, and the company produces ‘intelligent’ tractors in 12 factories worldwide. to commemorate this at the Lincolnshire Show, we will be displaying several ‘classic’ John Deere tractors from years gone by!” n Doubleday will be at the Lincolnshire Show with a range of products on display and a hospitality area to welcome customers old and new! aheaD Brighter Days

When two people with a background in farming turn to a career in landscaping, their own garden at home transforms into acres of brightly-coloured, bucolic green space. Or at least that was the case for Chris Neave and Jonathan Cartwright, owners of Brightwater Gardens near Market Rasen, filled with flowers and open to visitors... Words: Tilly Wilkinson. “In addition to promoting garden interest, we like to ensure people are aware of the environment and how they can help it even if they have just the smallest of spaces...”

The National Gardens Scheme is a superb charity that works so well, opening hidden personal gardens for the public to enjoy on summer Sundays. although all the gardens that open are beautiful and worth exploring, Saxby’s Brightwater gardens may come as a bit of a surprise to regular charity garden visitors.

Brightwater gardens was designed and created by Chris Neave and Jonathan Cartwright. Both come from farming families. Chris started his own commercial landscaping company around 25 years ago and he and Jonathan built the house 19 years ago. they now have a total of eight acres which include formal gardens and wildflower meadows and woodland.

In 2007 Chris sold the landscaping business and he and Jonathan started opening the garden to the public at weekends from april until august, also by appointment to gardening groups. the garden hosts several charity days each year to raise money for organisations including the National garden Scheme.

“Since 2012 the garden has also opened for Snowdrop Fortnight and we now welcome over 1,000 visitors in late February,” says Chris. “During the summer months, visitor numbers exceed 100 a weekend with people travelling from all over the uk and further afield.”

the garden is made up of many different elements and you can follow a mapped route around the garden giving a pleasant half mile walk with plenty of seats to sit and soak up the atmosphere. the tour begins at the Birch glade one follows the path through a wildflower area which is home to many bees, butterflies and other insects throughout the late spring and early summer.

“In addition to promoting garden interest, we like to ensure people are aware of the environment and how they can help it in the smallest of spaces. therefore, we’ve created a mini wildflower meadow.” 120

the path leads on through the Prairie Borders which are full of bold drifts of herbaceous plants giving a riot of colour from mid-summer until early autumn. then on to the hillside lawn.

“Watch out for a well-known character around these parts,” says Chris. “We have a robotic lawn mower nicknamed Basil! he wanders

Chris Neave Top Tips from the Experts “Preparation is incredibly important and often overlooked,” says Chris “Look after your soil. Cultivate and prepare the soil properly before you plant. We have so many people say how lucky we are to have such good soil, in fact the soil here is light sand but by adding plenty of our homemade compost, we are able to improve the structure, fertility and water retention.” “Secondly, garden with the environment in mind. We use the minimum amount of chemicals to control weeds and spot treatment of pernicious meadow weeds. To encourage bees, butterflies, other insects and birds we try to ensure there is an all year-round habitat.”

the hillside lawn making sure the grass is kept pristine. Basil cuts right down to the bulb bank, Pindle pond and Fritillaria meadow which you can view from this hillside.” Walking through the shaded winter garden you will enjoy the long woodland walk which leads to the far pond.

On returning to the garden you’ll head back past the bulb bank and damp valley to Capability Brown’s lookout with views towards St. helens church which the 18th century landscape architect is believed to have designed around 1775. On through the dry garden which is planted with more tender plants including salvias and agapanthus, to the lavender walk which links the monolith terrace and pergola. the area immediately around the house has the urn garden which is full of peonies, the Dutch garden and the Long terrace with shrub roses and more peonies.

to the east of the house there is the solar garden planted with rich late summer asters and showy rich coloured dahlias and tender annuals and perennials. the formal Cathedral garden gives an area of quiet contemplation before a cup of tea in the hay Barn. a quarter of a mile away from the garden is the Brightwater green Burial meadow which offers environmentally friendly burials in woodland glades in a wildflower meadow. the gardens are open until monday 27th august on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank holidays from 11am - 4pm.

admission is £5, children go free. you may bring your own picnic to the gardens, and there are self-service refreshments available in the hay Barn. If you would like to visit on Brightwater’s NgS Open day, it will be in a couple of month on thursday 16th august when visitors can expect to see an abundance of herbaceous perennials with glorious dahlias. Chris and Jonathan welcome tours for groups of 20 or more on pre-booked dates. n For more information, please call 01673 878820 or visit www.brightwatergardens.co.uk. WEDDINGS

a Royal engagement

hannah and Jared’s wedding was a true celebration of their lives and their love for one another. the royal engineers were there to support them on the day, all the family chipped in, and it ended in a surprise honeymoon to Cuba... Images: Jessy Jones Photography, 07947 514456, www.jessyjonesphotography.co.uk.

Our featured couple met through a mutual friend who thought they would make a good match, and how right they were!

hannah is a primary school teacher and Jared is an Officer in the royal engineers. While not being local, the two have a lot of family who live in Lincolnshire.

“Jared proposed to me on my 21st birthday in Berlin,” says hannah. “During this time, I was on my year abroad teaching in germany and Jared flew over so we could get a weekend away in my favourite city.”

“Jared had organised the entire day seeing the various sights of Berlin and going around various Christmas markets. after an amazing dinner in the district of Charlottenburg, Jared took me for a walk near Charlottenburg palace. right in front of the palace, which was all lit up, he started his proposal.”

“We chose abbey Farm Weddings in kirkstead for our venue first and then started to organise the church followed by the catering.”

“For the dress, I had seen the same dress online countless times that I loved. I went dress shopping with my parents and sister, tried on about four dresses and saved the one I’d been looking at online till last. It was definitely ‘the one!’” “We found Jessy Jones, our photographer, online and fell in love with her candid shots

The Wedding of

HANNAH AND JARED

and how beautiful her portfolio photos were. We had an engagement shoot with her and she made us feel completely at ease, which was essential as neither of us really had a clue what to do! We’re so pleased with our wedding photos.”

“Our gorgeous cake was made by Jared’s mother as a really generous wedding present to us. It was a delicious victoria sponge cake with plenty of fresh summer berries and was so good, there was nothing left of it by the end of the day! She’s a pastry and dessert chef so was the perfect person to make the cake and it added a personal touch.”

“Continuing with the family connection to our wedding, my mother made around 100 metres of bunting to decorate our venue, as well as mirrors for our seating plan, the wedding favours and some beautiful lanterns. We had so many compliments on the bunting, which went really well with the exposed beams of the barn.” “She was such a great support during the entire planning process and we couldn’t have asked for more lovely decorations.” “the day was both a mixture of unbelievable excitement but also nerves about potentially tripping over. anyone who knows me knows that I'm not the most graceful of people!” “But seeing Jared at the end of the aisle and having my mum walk me down dispelled 125

- WEDDINGS -

“Jared organised a secret honeymoon. At the reception, there was a guide to Cuba placed in front of me..!” any nerves I might have had. taking our vows was so special, and something I wish I could do all over again!”

“a highlight was definitely the speeches. there wasn’t a dry eye in the venue with my stepdad’s speech, which was so beautiful and touching. the waterworks (for me anyway) continued into Jared’s speech, and I was just so proud to call him my husband.”

“I organised the wedding and Jared organised the honeymoon as a surprise. as I walked into the barn to sit down at the table, Jared had put a guide to Cuba on the table in front of my seat! We went to havana for 10 days.”

“We went exploring, drank plenty of mojitos in the sunshine, as well as taking buses to the local beaches. It’s such a vibrant and friendly place, full of music, dancing and culture.”

“We cannot thank our families enough for all of their help and support in making our wedding the most amazing day of our lives.” 126

Cranwell Bloodhounds

26th annual Ball

The Cranwell Bloodhounds are a private, not-for-profit bloodhound pack that hunt the clean boot. every year they hold an annual ball for everyone involved with the hunt and this year was the 26th annual ball.

Bloodhounds hunt the ‘clean boot’ meaning that they hunt the natural scent of

man; a cross country runner. to do this, hounds are given an article of clothing to smell or the quarry will greet the hounds at the meet. the quarry is given 20 minutes head start prior to each of the lines hunted. n For more info, visit cranwellbloodhounds.co.uk.

MOTORS

Così Bello - It’s so beautiful!

Is there any motoring marque as evocative as Ferrari? Sleek, sexy and as glamorous as a supercar can possibly be; and now there’s a new Ferrari, the Portofino, that has a dash of added practicality, too.

‘Ne'er cast a clout till May be out,’ as farmers say in our part of the world. In other words, summer shmummer, the weather could still be miserable until the end of may, so don’t cast aside your cloak (or your Barbour jacket) just yet. With the imminent arrival of June, though, we can afford to indulge ourselves in rather more optimistic visions of a long hot summer. and so, you’ll be looking not just to cast off clout, but to cast off the roof of your car, too. enter the Ferrari Portofino. Perfect for our rutted roads and tight back lanes, perfect for farmers. Well, maybe not. after all, it isn’t as practical as an Isuzu pick-up, but it’s certainly sexier than the latter (and the average farmer, for that matter!). In fairness, four seats (just), a 292 litre boot and a hard top - rather than a fabric one - all make the odd concession to

practicality and to our unpredictable climate. a slight dash of practicality aside, the Portofino is still a Ferrari, which means it’s beautiful, it’s bold, and boy... is it quick!

the car is named after one of the ‘most charming villages on the Italian riviera,’ according to the hyperbolic press release,

which also drops into the conversation nuggets like ‘e-Diff3,’ ‘variable displacement,’ ‘multi-spark functionality,’ and ‘high-tumble intake manifolds,’ which our local farmers would probably recognise as ‘discursive land fertiliser.’ meh. Whatever; it’s pretty and its fast. essentially, the Portofino is the ‘entry level’ Ferrari, but with a 3.8 litre turbocharged V8 engine, the prancing horse will gallop to 199mph, and reach 60mph in about 3.5 seconds. an F1-sourced dual-clutch seven speed automatic gearbox makes the Portofino’s 760nm of torque frighteningly accessible, whilst rear wheel drive enables the car’s haunches to shoulder all of the power. the sound is pretty scary, and works via a new electronically-controlled by-pass valve

Modern Classics for Summer Style...

the car is named after one of the ‘most charming villages on the Italian riviera,’ according to its hyperbolic press release... in the exhaust in conjunction with the car’s Ignition, Comfort and Sports settings; the latter opening the valves fully to really wake up the neighbours on Sunday morning.

In the cabin it’s all a bit masculine; fighter jet-inspired controls, a massive rev counter, at least three digital screens and a steering wheel littered with everything from a starter button to the car’s traction control sensitivity switch. It may be a bit brutish in its overall appearance, but it’s modern enough in terms of ergonomics and functionality, with a responsive 10” touchscreen, whilst 18-way electrically adjustable seats ensure comfort beyond the car’s remit. Whilst the back seats will remain the preserve of dinky children, they’re at least a welcome dash of usability. the Portofino is no day-to-day car, but it’s as practical, as fast and as comfortable as any supercar is going to get. Best of all, it sports that all important prancing horse badge that signifies Ferrari’s legendary heritage. n

Morgan Aero 8 GT, £107,500: Achieving 170mph on a track and a 4.5 second dash to 60mph, Morgan’s Aero GT is the modern looking motor from a firm traditionally associated with designs that still evoke the 1930s. Jaguar I-Pace Duckworth Introduces the Revolutionary

Hear that? Probably not, because Jaguar’s all-new I-Pace didn’t come roaring into the showroom like other big cats in the brand’s portfolio, but rather purring in, in comparative silence. that’s because the vehicle is the first car by the brand designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle. there are no combustion engines or hybrid systems, just

a hushed sense of refinement and plenty of space inside owing to the absense of bulky conventional mechanics. Duckworth Jaguar Land rover, based in market rasen and kirton is one of just four dealers who had an exclusive pre-launch vehicle in the showroom for potential purchasers. n See www.duckworth.boston.landrover.co.uk.

FROM shepherd’s hut to luxury holiday home – how one Lincolnshire farm was helped by Wilkin Chapman solicitors.

SEEKING professional advice to ensure a business idea comes to fruition is the advice from one Lincolnshire farmer, who has ventured into the tourism industry. When a former shepherd’s cottage became vacant on land farmed by the Wallis family, the idea was born to transform it into high-quality holiday accommodation. Nestled in a beautiful corner of the Lincolnshire Wolds at Biscathorpe, the family farm extends to 1,200 acres across – with a further three farms managed on behalf of others.

The previously redundant cottage is found in one of the prettiest locations – in front of a Grade II listed Anglican Church and on The Viking Way, with two fords nearby. The transformation of the building was a family affair, with all involved in ensuring the project’s success, supported by professionals from the county. “As the plan progressed into a reality, the advice and help from Wilkin

Chapman solicitors was first class,” said Kevin Wallis.

“When we first started, there was so much that was new to us from the planning and building regulations to the issues surrounding changing the use of what was a tied cottage,” he explained. “We are farmers, and this is not something we had dealt with before, so the help of professionals was invaluable,” added Kevin, whose first point of contact for advice was Wilkin Chapman Partner and Head of Tourism and Leisure, Flora Bennett.

The Wallis family has been supported by Wilkin Chapman for many years – Kevin’s grandfather was a client of Falkner and Co Solicitors in Louth, which became Wilkin Chapman in 1981.

“The depth of expertise and dedicated skills within the firm means there is always someone you can go to who has the specialist knowledge we need and that has helped tremendously,” he said.

The family is now looking forward to even more growth within Lincolnshire’s tourism industry – something they have witnessed in the last few years. “We have been open four years now and it seems to be getting busier all the

time, with people deciding to have their vacations in this country which is certainly a good thing for the whole of Lincolnshire, not just for those in tourism, but for the region as a whole,” added Mr Wallis. For information on how Wilkin Chapman can help you, contact Flora Bennett on 01507 606161, or email flora.bennett@wilkinchapman.co.uk or visit www.wilkinchapman.co.uk.
