LANCASTER BOMBER APPROVED
LINCOLN Lincoln decided they needed their very own angel of the North and they have finally had their very own design approved. the full-size installation of the Lancaster Bomber will be on land at Brills Farm, just off the a46 in Norton Disney. the sculpture will welcome visitiors as they drive into Lincolnshire and it’s extra special as it’s 100 years of teh raF this year. the 26
metre long sculpture will be mounted on a steel frame to give the impression that it is in flight.So far, there have been no plans to create a car pack but they are considering installing a viewing area. there will also be guided tours for school children or other people interested once the installation is completed. n www.raf.mod.uk.

BOSTON asian hornets are bad news as they can wipe out bee populations in a very short space of time. If you do see one, you must report it as it is a non-native species of england. the latest sighting was seen on a cauliflower in Bury, greater manchester and was later traced back to a farm in Boston. Defra’s Nicola Spence said: “We are taking swift and robust action to locate and investigate any nests in the Bury and Boston, they pose no greater threat to humans than normal bees. Defra says at this time of year the hornet is likely to be a newly emerged queen which is looking to establish a nest.

LINCOLN ‘S HERITAGE CENTRE has been awareded a grant of £585,600 from the heritage Lottery Fund. the project will offer training to those who wish to gain traditional and specialist skills, but may do not currently have the relevant experience or qualifications needed for such a specific role. n

OPEN AIR CINEMA GOES AHEAD Sleaford town Council is to press ahead with plans to stage an outdoor cinema event on Boston road recreation ground to add something special to Sleaford’s calendar in summer. the date for the screening has been set as Saturday 1st September, but the film is yet to be decided. If the project is successful, the council hopes to then progress with an open air theare show the following year and local theatre groups will be approached to come on board. the culture, events and markets panel is also progressing with plans for a special 1940s day in the town with dressing up, a parade, old vehicles and stalls. this is due to the success of 1940s festivals in the surrounding towns and villages most notably Woodhall Spa and Boston. n

Sophie’s Journey The DoubleTree by Hilton in Lincoln recently hosted Sophie’s Journey charity ball. guests enjoyed a drink on arrival at 6.30pm before a meal and a dance.
the charity is inspired by Sophie robinson who was diagnosed with cancer.
It wasn’t until after Sophie died that her family decided to register Sophie’s Journey. they wanted to make a positive difference for children with cancer and their families. they went on holiday after Sophie finished radiotherapy, which gave them this idea.

Sculptor Theodore Gillick takes his inspiration from nature, and as a keen botanist too, has found that keeping honey bees is not only a rewarding pastime, but yields the ability to harvest delicious honey with seasonal variations... What you have to love about Stamford and is not only the beauty of the countryside and all the pretty houses, but the people who inhabit them. you may have heard about the gillick family who live in Priory house. Perhaps the charming children have crossed your path before or maybe you’re a very fortunate owner of a theo gillick sculpture. ruth gillick may have dazzled you with her warm smile; either way, the energy that this family holds is something quite remarkable.
We were fortunate enough to visit theo and his family recently, not to talk his latest sculptures (although we can’t resist touching on that a little) but to discuss the business of his bees. Apis mellifera prove a respite for the intensity that comes hand in hand with creating masterpieces. theo is currently working on human sculptures but in the past he has mainly worked with animals.
theo captures an animal or human in their natural state, no editing, no re-design, but a perfectly sculptured homage to their natural, unconscious beauty.
as we sat in the living room, an audience congregated around theo as he began to talk. a two-year-old Dulcima perched on the sofa, heart-breaking blue eyes looking up at Daddy in fascination while Florence and her cousin Pia listened as they lent against the wall, so much focus in this distracted world.
an ever-growing Louis perched on a chair, ready at any moment to contribute his own extraordinary knowledge and we were later joined by maya, a family friend who seemed

It all began for the gillick’s after a poor attempt at growing various plants and vegetables in the kitchen garden of their stunning 18th century house. theo decided that lack of pollination was a big problem and with his scientific, botanist education and his wife ruth’s background in ecology, they decided to venture into bee keeping.
theo bought three traditional beehives in august 2014. he had all the beekeeping manuals and books a man could ever hope

Theo has around 42 species of trees & shrubs within 100m his garden, and one colony covers about 2900 acres collecting pollen and nectar so there will be a huge combination in the summer honey. We tried some honey that was collected from the lime trees and it was delicious with almost a spearmint flavour to it beneath all the sweetness. n

THE BEES AND THE TREES...

“We had everything from wasps invading the beehives to dying queens,” says theo, clearly still a bit traumatised by those teething issues. theo pulled through this time with the generous help of his mentor, alastair Stirling, a man from ketton who’s father was the infamous David Stirling who founded the SaS (see, that’s another local gem!). It was alastair’s guidance that may have stopped theo killing off his hives entirely. Just four months down the line of this baptism of fire and you’ll no longer see your average beehive anywhere near Priory house.
theo explained that the original beehive design, the basic structure that a chap called reverend Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth designed in 1852, is still largely accepted as the standard home for bees today.
Langstroth constructed his hives so that bees built their honey comb in his wooden frames instead of wherever they liked, and these could be lifted out and inspected. It was utterly ingenious, but that’s about 150 years ago. many beekeepers have tried new designs, but the advantages are small so little has changed at all. theo puts this lack of progress down to there simply being not enough money in beekeeping to invest in r&D; and standard hives ‘do the job’ in many respects. Nevertheless, after pulling together knowledge from keepers all over the planet and what theo refers to as a lot of ‘beginners hubris,’ the new design of hive that is taking great care of theo’s bees came about.
he doesn’t give too much away about the real technicalities of his invention only that after five trials and re-designs it allows the bees to sense and smell the temperature outside of their very well-insulated hive. the colonies are huge and healthy and he has averaged about ten times as much honey from one hive as a run-of-the-mill hive could. In the middle of summer, theo expects to have around one million bees between his ten hives, but with a few novel management methods, only takes a quarter of the work of an old hive, all thanks to a little bit of imagination when it comes to their habitat.

Among the hundreds of exhibitors, exciting performances and attractions at the 2018 Lincolnshire Show, there will be an array of raF themed activities and stands, which will include a Dakota flypast, a Spitfire flypast, a replica red arrow, mini tank driving for children and a special aviation themed treasure hunt trail. the theme of this year’s event is all about recognising 100 years since the end of World War I while still celebrating the best of rural Lincolnshire.
“aviation forms an important part of our great heritage,” says Jayne Southall, CeO of the Show. “Lincolnshire is the home of the red arrows and at one stage was one of the leading aircraft production areas in the world.”

The Lincoln Dragon Boat Race is back for third year running this summer along the city’s Brayford Waterfront. HERITAGE It’s the local company with a national reputation for excellence. Opening 80 years prior to M&S, Rob Davis looks back at the origins of Oldrids and Downtown The Oldrids name was first heard in the town of Boston when draper, mercer, hosier, haberdasher and funeral director John Oldrid, who was born near Spilsby in Hagworthingham in 1778, moved his business to Boston. The business passed down to John Oldrid III (far right) in 1831 and though his wife ran the business until her death, a lack of male heirs meant Oldrid & Co was put up for sale in 1906 whereupon Sydney Smith purchased it. Smith had a somewhat irascible management style and in leaner times would even add small amounts to his customers’ accounts.
After nine years the business passed into the ownership of Mr Robert Isaac, the first of a local retail dynasty which endures today (see opposite). The war years saw a decline in trade as there was less money to spend and fewer resources to trade. Nevertheless the business thrived with new opportunities to sell furniture and kitchen appliances in the more optimistic decades of the 1950s and 1960s. The 1970s saw the introduction of the Oldrids otter; a familiar logo for a decade. Today the business sells over 250,000 lines and keeps up with changing trends of fashions and home furnishings. n
Looking After Our People Whilst the company has grown, its core values of looking after both customers and employees alike continues. All members of staff are entitled to a free ‘soup and sandwich’ lunch, and staff enjoy 20% discount with two members of staff sitting on the board as directors. There are generous long service awards for employees like Sheila Hayes, who has been employed by the company for 45 years, and 15% of the company’s shares are held in trust for the benefit of employees in the form of dividend payments. n

As Pride goes to press the company hopes to secure the go-ahead for its new designer outlet. The site will form part of a wider redesign of the Gonerby Junction site including the creation of a new garden centre. It will include more than 220,000sq ft of retail space, the creation of 107 designer outlet stores with some big names already secured but subject to an embargo. The 25 acre site will also include 2,000 parking spaces, 22,000sq ft of leisure attractions and will inject £125m into the local economy.

as their new spring and summer menus were being tasted by the waitering team. as well as concentrating on local suppliers, the menus are seasonal too, offering something different for regular diners throughout the year. Our personal recommendations from the new spring and summer menu are the rolled loin of rabbit, the pan fried cod supreme and the hay smoked rump of lamb. every thursday throughout the year, you can enjoy Steak Night. Choose from three cuts of meat - steak, lamb and chicken - two sides, a garnish and drink all for just £15. after dinner, you can also enjoy live acoustic entertainment performed every thursday.

Everyone with a sweet tooth in Lincolnshire will know of the delights of Dennetts Ice Cream, but only a few will know its extensive history and four generations... Main: Robin and his wife Clare who works in the Lincoln store.
Bragging is our forté. When a yellowbelly entures outside of the county borders, and someone remarks about how great the food is from their area, it’s only natural for us to correct them.
We’ve all been guilty of it. When visiting Cornwall or Scarborough, you may hear someone remark that their ice cream is the best in Britain. you won’t be able to stop yourself from thinking ‘I doubt it’ll come close to Dennetts.’ On a warm sunny day, scaling Steep hill in Lincoln is an arduous task, but it’s all worth it when you reach Dennetts Ice Cream Parlour at the top, serving 30 refreshing flavours of delicious, dairy ice cream.
everyone is familiar with this Lincolnshire staple, but only a handful will know its rich heritage, a long history giving the company enough time to perfect their flavours.
robin Dennett is the current man in charge, proud of the company’s fabulous reputation with locals but he very modestly credits it to his predecessors.
“It’s my grandparents arthur and mary who started the ice cream business in 1926,” says robin. “During the first world war, arthur bought his dairy farm in hundleby. they had a herd of Lincoln red cattle, and sold the milk for a penny a pint!” “they decided to add value to their product, and churn it into ice cream butter and cheese
selling it from the farm. the ice creams were called ‘licks’ back then.”
“the Spilsby Shop was opened in 1934 and we took over the ice cream parlour in the Bailgate in 1995 to reach out to a wider audience. the Spilsby shop closed in the 1970s but Lincoln’s parlour is still open and has its own tearoom now. the Lincoln parlour has a 14th century vaulted ceiling in its seating area, and we serve our famous Wolds Whopper here!” In arthur’s time, they just sold plain ice cream - no vanilla flavouring or any kind of flavouring. It wasn’t until his son eric, robin’s father, took over the business that the wide variety of flavours were introduced.

“My father came home to work with my grandfather after the Second World War in 1948,” says Robin. “He was an electrician in the RAF stationed in Italy. It was Eric’s time spent in Italy, the capital of ‘gelato,’ that changed the nature of Dennetts.”
“The dairy farm was still running, so at the time, my father was still bottling milk and grading and packing eggs. He would’ve been delivering milk too; we had 12 milk rounds back when bottled milk was still popular, but this was slowly on the decline.”
“Inspired by the Italian’s passion for ice cream and their wealth of exotic flavours, Eric returned and started to introduce flavours to Dennetts’s plain ice cream.” When Eric introduced different flavours, sales skyrocketed. It was still a new concept to have flavoured ice cream, and with high quality milk from the Friesian cows, the ice cream was delicious and started to gain its reputation. “Arthur had seven grandchildren, so we knew that once my grandfather passed the farm and the business down, the farm would unfortunately have to be sold,” says Robin. “There were too many of us to split it between.”
“However, I had been working for the farm for several years so I took on the ice cream business. We don’t milk our own cows now unfortunately, but we use a Lincolnshire dairy for our milk and cream, to ensure the quality and flavour is kept.” Dennetts in the 21st century has accumulated many awards from the Ice Cream Alliance

1915: Arthur Dennett started the dairy farm with Lincoln Reds. 1926: Arthur and his wife Mary started Dennetts Ice Cream together. 1934: The Spilsby shop was opened.
1948: Eric joined Dennetts, turning it into AE Dennett & Sons Ltd and started to add new flavours. 1952: Robin was born, the next generation of Dennetts Ice Cream. 1995: The Lincoln parlour was purchased.

Ice Cream
INTERESTING FACTS:
Dennetts is sold across the whole of the county largely through the Lincolnshire Cooperative. the fourth generation of Dennetts has opened a new shop called Sweet Vanilla in Spilsby selling the ice cream alongside sweets and other goodies. the fifth generation of Dennetts has just been born!
Vanilla: Most of the vanilla used to make ice cream comes from Madagascar and Indonesia.
Toppings: Chocolate syrup is the world’s most popular topping.
Dennetts is also sold to restaurants, pubs and cafés, as well as the kinema in the Woods and weddings as well. they have a special cart and trailer they take to weddings and fairs. “We believe the reason why we’re successful and why we’ve been around for nearly 100 years, is first of all the quality of our product. using local milk from high quality cattle, and sourcing the very best flavourings for our products has been the key. I also think the service we provide has really contributed to our growing success.” In a Pride exclusive, robin discussed the secret recipe and ingredients to Dennetts’s exceptional ice cream. after all, it’s the quality of its ingredients that makes it so special rather than the process.
“We make batches of around 160 - 170 litres of ice cream - 1,150 - 1,250 cornets - using a base of fresh milk and double cream we add the other ingredients and pasteurised to 85ºC. It is then slowly cooled and aged for 24 hours.” “the mixture is then flavoured then frozen. We then use a machine to churn the mixture; it does exactly the same as what my grandfather would’ve done by hand all those years ago!”
although robin’s favourite flavour is coffee, the general public still prefer vanilla. around 25% of what Dennetts sell is simple vanilla ice cream. their five bestsellers overall are mint chocolate chip ice cream, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and toffee.
Licks: It takes about 50 licks to finish a single scoop ice cream cone.

to my surprise, rum & raisin was not on this list! In my personal opinion, Dennetts rum & raisin is by far the best ice cream around. In a year, Dennetts will produce between 65,000 to 75,000 litres of ice cream - that means yellowbellies will consume 445,000 to 525,000 cornets a year!
unfortunately, Dennetts will not be at the Lincolnshire Show, but robin will definitely be there as he is the Patron of the Lincoln red Cattle society.
he’s been at Dennetts for 38 years, but before this, he was a shepherd, and is still very passionate about shepherding. he will be providing commentary on the sheep classes at the Lincolnshire Show. Dennetts is comparable only to the Italians in our proud Lincolnshire opinions, so next time that’s ever questioned by the Cornish, yorkies or Devonians, remind them of our superb provisions of ice cream and its outstanding heritage and reputation in the local area.

Take Your Pick at WILLOWS Farm
There’s nothing better than fresh strawberries and raspberries on a summer’s day, and you can’t get them any fresher than right off the stalk. You can pick your own fruit at Willows Farm near Skegness thanks to David Pridgeon... Fresh strawberries with cream is a cliché of a British summer. It’s a picnic highlight, Wimbledon classic and welcome treat after a day in the garden. you won’t get a fresher strawberry than one that you have handpicked right off the stalk. there’s something traditional and simple about picking fruit on a hot summer’s day when they’re still warm to the touch and full to bursting with sticky sweet juices.
We visited David Pridgeon on his family farm near Skegness as he was getting ready for another busy season of fruit picking. Willows Farm is largely arable but in 1997, when David returned from college, he thought it would be good to diversify the business into fruit and fruit picking.
“I started the fruit farm at a time when picking your own fruit was really popular,” says David. “It still is but it has definitely seen a resurgence in the past couple of years.”
“David sells his fruit to wholesalers and at local markets as well as offering the Pick your Own service, and it isn’t just strawberries you can try from Willows Farm. there are also raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, gooseberries and plums to pick and eat. “I think what’s really special about picking your own fruit is first of all how fresh the fruit is and how good it tastes, but also how local the fruit is.” “you literally cannot get less food miles even if you tried, and I think the buying habits of

HOW TO PICK THE BEST...
the fresh fruit including the strawberries from early June till the end of august, but you can also pick pumpkins in time for pumpkin soup and scary carved faces at halloween on the farm in October.
Look for plump, shiny, tender berries, with a good, bright colour and a sweet aroma, preferably with their leafy green calyx and stalk still attached. Avoid picking slightly mushy or mouldy berries, especially if you’re keeping the strawberries for later.
“the diversification into fruit on the farm has now taken over and despite it only taking up 10 hectares of the 500 hectare arable farm, it is the most labour intensive and the biggest part of the business.”
When we visited Willows Farm in early may, there had been a recent heatwave so the interest in David’s strawberries from wholesalers and markets had skyrocketed. David and his team of 20 were busy preparing everything for the start of the season and the expected high demand due to the warmer weather. however, due to the unusual weather we’ve had this year, jumping from snow to sun, it has had an affect on when they’ve been able to plant and grow the fruit.
“We plant from march till June, but we grow most of our wholesale produce in polytunnels. this allows us to be flexible with cropping, and lets us stagger growing and production out so we have a level amount of fruit throughout the season rather than one high peak.”
If you would prefer to buy your own fruit from Willows Farm rather than picking your own, there is a farm shop that you can go to on the site. If you’re worried about accessibility there is field grown strawberries, but also ‘table top’ fruit production grown in rows so there is no need to bend down. you can either get your ready picked fruit or pick your own every day from 9am until 6pm in the season which will start mid-June this year at Chapel St. Leonards and from 10am until 5pm at Saltfleetby.
at Willows Farm you can also buy locally grown Lincolnshire potatoes, carrots, beetroot, onions, cauliflowers, cabbages, lettuce, spring onions and tomatoes. there will also be other seasonal fruit and veg on offer including pod peas, sweetcorn, runner beans, cherries, plums, greengages and much more.
If you’re not heading to the east coast this summer, there are a number of other Pick your Own fruit farms across the county and one that may be a little bit closer to home. If you’re in grantham, try Syston Park Farm 62

If you’re buying a punnet, always check that the underside of the punnet isn’t stained; that means the lower level of berries has been crushed. Large strawberries tend to have a higher water content, so will be less flavourful. Choose the small to medium-sized ones.

ese delicately flavoured shortcakes have a complex, subtle spiciness from the infused camomile and are a match made in heaven for sweet British strawberries.
Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. mix the strawberries, caster sugar and lemon zest in a small bowl and set aside to soften a little. Warm 125ml cream in a small pan with the teabags until simmering. remove from the heat, add the butter and infuse for five minutes. Squeeze the teabags and discard.
reheat the pan to melt the butter, if needed, then stir in the milk. In a large bowl, sift the flour and baking powder, then mix in the infused cream with 50g caster sugar and a pinch of salt, bringing together to make a rough dough.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a 2cm thickness. Cut out six biscuits with a 6cm round cutter, rerolling the dough as needed. Place on a lined baking tray and chill for 15 minutes.
Brush the tops with a little cream and bake for 12-15 minutes, until light golden. Place on a wire rack to cool, then carefully split in half horizontally. Whip the remaining cream with one tbsp caster sugar and vanilla to soft peaks. Spoon onto half the shortcakes, add the strawberries, then balance the remaining shortcakes on top.

Positioned in the peaceful setting of West Deeping, Cromwell house has been the charming happy home of mr and mrs aldred for ten years. the couple moved away from Stamford after they married for some more space as two families became one. On first impressions, Iain aldred says you’ll be amazed by the lovely situation, “It’s very quiet and private,” he says, “But equally easy to travel to Stamford, Peterborough or commute to London.” the entrance into the house is spacious and welcoming but come may, you’ll mostly want to look at the incredible georgian façade of the house with the charming Wisteria gently hugging the beautiful stone work. Wisteria’s are magical as they are known to live for up to 100 years and even older. there’s actually a 1,200-year-old wisteria tree in Japan. this long-life bestows the symbolic meaning of immortality and longevity to the wisteria. “may will be wonderful,” says Iain, “the garden will look beautiful and the wisteria will come out.”
as you enter the atmospheric Dining hall with its raw stone floor, stone fireplace, alcove and shutters, you’ll feel almost weightless from this spacious first impression. the drawing room is a wonderful double aspect room with original restored light oak parquet flooring, French doors to the garden and a stone fireplace. the kitchen is ideal for informal kitchen suppers has room for a large table, there is an island and French doors to the kitchen courtyard too. the kitchen also features the most amazing pre-historic marble on the surfaces that are very attractive. this property (including the kitchen) was renovated by the previous owner in 2005.
there is also a sitting room with an inglenook fireplace and wood burner although if you wanted to take the wood burner out and have an open fire place, it is all fully functional. Iain’s wife Susanna says that people often comment on the beautiful exposed beams in the snug, “there are lots of features that give this property character,” she says. there is also a study, utility room, two cloakrooms and an internal triple garage. “the windows look South over the main part of the garden,” says Susanna, “It’s a completely unspoilt view.”

the Sack Store appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1859. Stoneware in various forms has been produced throughout the world for centuries. It is defined as pottery fired at around 1200 degrees centigrade producing a robust, dense body, ably used for fine tableware, ornaments, insulators and even chemical vessels. advertising pieces of the 19th and 20th centuries are providing popular as either collectables or interior decorator’s pieces, beautifully juxtaposing with modern furnishings. the naive charm of Lincolnshire and other local stoneware coupled with the vast array of designs; from beer bottles, other tavern related items, butter churns, flagons and even political flasks prominent in areas such as horncastle and the array of advertising styles and varied names mean there are vast numbers of pieces to buy and a great number of collectors. take the humble beer bottle for example: its birth in glass can be traced back to a Dr alexander Nowell, some 440 years ago in hertfordshire. 18th century stoneware pieces are rare and it was in the 19th century that porter (a drink similar to stout) began to be bottled in any number. It would’ve had a lid, but the pail is in excellent condition for an everyday item, proving its hardiness. We see many examples of local advertising stoneware, pick a place: alford, Lincoln, grantham, Southwell, Stamford, Bourne, and you will almost certainly find something. The summer months is when nature really thrives. You’ll see an abundance of colour and flowers in Lincolnshire gardens in June, especially orchids...
Overpopulating
OrChIDS There are more than 25,000 orchid species in the world. That means there are four times more orchids than bird species and four times more orchid species than mammals!
June is definitely the best month for orchids. you’ll spot them along road banks and in old grassland across the county, especially the common spotted, heath spotted and pyramidal orchids, adding something new and pleasant to our natural surroundings. you’ll also see dogrose and plenty of honeysuckle, attracting moths of all sizes like brimstone and swallowtail, who are tempted in by the scent of the flower especially on warm evenings. On downland and on road verges you’ll see a flutter of butterflies. the most common butterflies you will spot includes meadow browns, 112
common blues and lots of large skippers. you may even see the odd glow worm on woodland rides or along hedgebanks. glow worms are most prolific in limestone areas.
If you’re out in the garden, look out for leaf-cutter bees. they carve small circles in your leaves to create their nests. Further south, stag beetles will also be searching through leaf litter.
Look out for the rather frightening looking, but completely harmless, cockchafer beetles as they blunder about on warm evenings. you’ll be able to spot these especially over farmland.

If you’re struggling to tell the difference between honey bees and leafcutter bees, here’s some top tips... On first sighting many species of solitary bees can be mistaken for honey bees or even hoverflies.
It can be very difficult to tell the difference between honey bees and leafcutters, especially if the leafcutter is not engaged in the activity of cutting leaves or building its nest, but instead, is foraging on flowers.

Near the Lincolnshire coasts, look out for guillemots and kittiwakes as they fight for space. you’ll also spot gull and tern colonies, but you’ll probably hear them first, as they squawk for food.
Other birds around the county perhaps in your garden - to look out for, includes pied wigtails and spotted flycatchers. these birds you will most likely catch busily feeding their families. In rivers you can spot sheets of water crowfoot. Sea trout will be making their way upstream to breed.

that also make prey for metallic green damselflies such as the banded demoiselle.
the most vibrant habitats in June will be meadows, and Lincolnshire has plenty of them. they will be filled with butterflies and plenty of early summer flowers; they are wildlife havens.
traditional meadows are cut for hay in summer to provide winter food for animals. this management leads to a great diversity of plants and animals. they are at their best just before the first cut so make sure you visit a meadow before it is cut for hay, full of diversity and life. n
One giveaway lies in their methods for collecting pollen. Worker honey bees, like bumblebees, collect pollen in their pollen baskets or ‘corbicula’ on the hind legs, then transport it back to the hive or nest. Leafcutter bees do not have pollen baskets, so instead, they collect pollen on hairs on the underside of their abdomens. When the bee is carrying pollen, it is quite visible as a pale yellow colour.

Or at least that was the case for Chris Neave and Jonathan Cartwright, owners of Brightwater Gardens near Market Rasen, filled with flowers and open to visitors... Words: Tilly Wilkinson. The National Gardens Scheme is a superb charity that works so well, opening hidden personal gardens for the public to enjoy on summer Sundays. although all the gardens that open are beautiful and worth exploring, Saxby’s Brightwater gardens may come as a bit of a surprise to regular charity garden visitors.
Brightwater gardens was designed and created by Chris Neave and Jonathan Cartwright. Both come from farming families. Chris started his own commercial landscaping company around 25 years ago and he and Jonathan built the house 19 years ago. they now have a total of eight acres which include formal gardens and wildflower meadows and woodland.
In 2007 Chris sold the landscaping business and he and Jonathan started opening the garden to the public at weekends from april until august, also by appointment to gardening groups. the garden hosts several charity days each year to raise money for organisations including the National garden Scheme.
“Since 2012 the garden has also opened for Snowdrop Fortnight and we now welcome over 1,000 visitors in late February,” says Chris. “During the summer months, visitor numbers exceed 100 a weekend with people travelling from all over the uk and further afield.”
the garden is made up of many different elements and you can follow a mapped route around the garden giving a pleasant half mile walk with plenty of seats to sit and soak up the atmosphere. the tour begins at the Birch glade one follows the path through a wildflower area which is home to many bees, butterflies and other insects throughout the late spring and early summer.

the path leads on through the Prairie Borders which are full of bold drifts of herbaceous plants giving a riot of colour from mid-summer until early autumn. then on to the hillside lawn.
“Watch out for a well-known character around these parts,” says Chris. “We have a robotic lawn mower nicknamed Basil! he wanders

We have so many people say how lucky we are to have such good soil, in fact the soil here is light sand but by adding plenty of our homemade compost, we are able to improve the structure, fertility and water retention.” “Secondly, garden with the environment in mind. We use the minimum amount of chemicals to control weeds and spot treatment of pernicious meadow weeds. To encourage bees, butterflies, other insects and birds we try to ensure there is an all year-round habitat.”

the hillside lawn making sure the grass is kept pristine. Basil cuts right down to the bulb bank, Pindle pond and Fritillaria meadow which you can view from this hillside.” Walking through the shaded winter garden you will enjoy the long woodland walk which leads to the far pond.
On returning to the garden you’ll head back past the bulb bank and damp valley to Capability Brown’s lookout with views towards St. helens church which the 18th century landscape architect is believed to have designed around 1775. On through the dry garden which is planted with more tender plants including salvias and agapanthus, to the lavender walk which links the monolith terrace and pergola. the area immediately around the house has the urn garden which is full of peonies, the Dutch garden and the Long terrace with shrub roses and more peonies.
to the east of the house there is the solar garden planted with rich late summer asters and showy rich coloured dahlias and tender annuals and perennials. the formal Cathedral garden gives an area of quiet contemplation before a cup of tea in the hay Barn. a quarter of a mile away from the garden is the Brightwater green Burial meadow which offers environmentally friendly burials in woodland glades in a wildflower meadow. the gardens are open until monday 27th august on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank holidays from 11am - 4pm.
admission is £5, children go free. you may bring your own picnic to the gardens, and there are self-service refreshments available in the hay Barn. If you would like to visit on Brightwater’s NgS Open day, it will be in a couple of month on thursday 16th august when visitors can expect to see an abundance of herbaceous perennials with glorious dahlias. Our featured couple met through a mutual friend who thought they would make a good match, and how right they were!
hannah is a primary school teacher and Jared is an Officer in the royal engineers. While not being local, the two have a lot of family who live in Lincolnshire.
“Jared proposed to me on my 21st birthday in Berlin,” says hannah. “During this time, I was on my year abroad teaching in germany and Jared flew over so we could get a weekend away in my favourite city.”
“Jared had organised the entire day seeing the various sights of Berlin and going around various Christmas markets. after an amazing dinner in the district of Charlottenburg, Jared took me for a walk near Charlottenburg palace. right in front of the palace, which was all lit up, he started his proposal.”
“We chose abbey Farm Weddings in kirkstead for our venue first and then started to organise the church followed by the catering.”
“For the dress, I had seen the same dress online countless times that I loved. I went dress shopping with my parents and sister, tried on about four dresses and saved the one I’d been looking at online till last. It was a delicious victoria sponge cake with plenty of fresh summer berries and was so good, there was nothing left of it by the end of the day! She’s a pastry and dessert chef so was the perfect person to make the cake and it added a personal touch.”
“Continuing with the family connection to our wedding, my mother made around 100 metres of bunting to decorate our venue, as well as mirrors for our seating plan, the wedding favours and some beautiful lanterns. the Cranwell Bloodhounds were formed in 1992 by masters Phil and Wendy Broughton with a view to providing a day in the countryside that everyone could enjoy.
Bloodhounds hunt the ‘clean boot’ meaning that they hunt the natural scent of

Chris Illsey and Caroline Birkin set up the company in 1988. Chris has actually run the London marathon five times and has an impressive personal best of two hours, 38 minutes and 42 seconds “as a previous London marathon runner myself I understand the importance of that medal at the end of such an iconic event to commend your hard work and achievement,” says Chris in a recent interview.

With the imminent arrival of June, though, we can afford to indulge ourselves in rather more optimistic visions of a long hot summer. and so, you’ll be looking not just to cast off clout, but to cast off the roof of your car, too. enter the Ferrari Portofino. Perfect for our rutted roads and tight back lanes, perfect for farmers. Well, maybe not. after all, it isn’t as practical as an Isuzu pick-up, but it’s certainly sexier than the latter (and the average farmer, for that matter!). In the cabin it’s all a bit masculine; fighter jet-inspired controls, a massive rev counter, at least three digital screens and a steering wheel littered with everything from a starter button to the car’s traction control sensitivity switch. It may be a bit brutish in its overall appearance, but it’s modern enough in terms of ergonomics and functionality, with a responsive 10” touchscreen, whilst 18-way electrically adjustable seats ensure comfort beyond the car’s remit. Whilst the back seats will remain the preserve of dinky children, they’re at least a welcome dash of usability. the Portofino is no day-to-day car, but it’s as practical, as fast and as comfortable as any supercar is going to get. Best of all, it sports that all important prancing horse badge that signifies Ferrari’s legendary heritage. n
Eagle E-Type, £650,000: Achingly beautiful, British firm Eagle’s recreation of the legendary Jaguar E-Type is a classic car with technology and engineering 50 years on. Hand-built in no fewer than 6,000 man hours, they’re as rare as hens’ teeth, but use the mechanicals of a modern 4.7-litre powerplant. It looks amazing, it’s mechanically reliable and it’s swathed in beautifully hewn materials like aluminium and leather, with a stunning polished wood steering wheel. n

FROM shepherd’s hut to luxury holiday home – how one Lincolnshire farm was helped by Wilkin Chapman solicitors.
