WELCOME

M

y main role as the Editor of Lincolnshire Pride is to celebrate Lincolnshire every month, showing off what makes our county one of the best in the country, from our fantastic farmers and agricultural provisions to the superb food offerings, educational facilities to the best local businesses.

This month, I can let the Lincolnshire Show do my job for me. What an incredible event. It gives me a great sense of pride in my county (pun intended), a true celebration of the people that make Lincolnshire such a fantastic place to be. It also makes us very proud of the magazine we produce each month. It was a real pleasure to meet our readers and advertisers, and we’re so pleased you enjoy reading the publication. In addition to our exclusive photos from the Lincolnshire Show 2018, this edition celebrates the success of local businessman and event promoter Colin Ward and the celebrities he’s met along the way.

We’re also celebrating Lincolnshire’s fantastic East Coast, and the Alford community that gets involved in the gardens at Alford Manor House. With best wishes for a great month!

Hollywood Actors in Lincoln Film A NEW FILM HAS BEEN PRODUCED IN LINCOLN’S CATHEDRAL QUARTER LINCOLN Brad Pitt, the Hollywood superstar, alongside several other celebrities, is producing The King a medieval film based on Shakespeare’s plays ‘Henry IV’ and ‘Henry V.’ Timothee Chalamet is the main star, previously nominated for an academy award. He portrays in the film a young, disgraced prince who inherits the crown and must learn what it means to be a king, guided by his one true friend, Falstaff played by Joel Edgerton, most well known for starring in the Great Gatsby, but also in Bright with Will Smith most recently on another popular Netflix Original film. Henry V, next in line to the throne, ascends to the crown in his late twenties and is immediately tasked with preserving England as it goes to war with France. Twilight star Robert Pattinson and Lily-Rose Depp - Johnny

Depp’s daughter - are also said to feature in the new film. You may even recognise a few people in the film when it is released on Netflix later this year, as when the stars came to

Brad Pitt shares production roles with Plan B production company’s Dede Gardner and GRIMSBY The ship measures in at eight feet long and four feet tall without its stand, and would make an excellent addition to any fan’s collection. Paul Jackman, who runs the Comic Book Heroes costume shop in Grimsby is putting it up for sale as he no longer has room for it and wanted to donate any proceeds to Demi’s cancer treatment. “A lot of people have expressed interest in owning the ship, but not many people have the space to store it,” he said. “We’ve been involved in raising money for Demi for quite a few months now, and even if

Other filming locations are yet to be confirmed but it will be filmed across Europe. n the ship only raises just £10, we’ll be happy to donate it.” The ship originally came about when Paul’s friend at Hildred’s Shopping Centre in Skegness discovered the disused prop. Paul and his friend renovated it at a cost of £100 and attached new wings. It’s now a regular centrepiece for their displays in the costume shop. “We’ve raised money for quite a few sick children in the area, and I knew Demi through my son’s school. Every time we go to an event, we try to collect money,” says Paul. We hope it raises a lot for Demi’s cause. n

NEW WIND FARM OPENS IN GRIMSBY

GRIMSBY Grimsby’s latest offshore wind farm has recently opened and was celebrated at a ceremony in the town. Race Bank, capable of powering more than half a million homes, has been built by Orsted off the Lincolnshire coast, with construction co-ordinated by a team out of Port of Grimsby East. It is the second farm from the firm formerly known

as Dong Energy, and the company is already well underway with the delivery of Hornsea Project One, set to be the world’s largest array, again from the town. The latest project, delivered at a name-worthy pace, is part of a cluster of farms creating 500 jobs in the Grimsby port. Race Bank is located 17 miles off Chapel St Leonards, with power coming from The Wash.

Prince Harry & Meghan Come to Lincolnshire

STOKE ROCHFORD The newlyweds were recently spotted in Lincolnshire at Harry’s cousin’s wedding. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were seen smiling and laughing as they attended his cousin's wedding in Stoke Rochford - with the bride wearing Princess Diana's tiara. The new Duchess of Sussex wore a long-sleeved blue-and-white paisley shirt dress and white fascinator at the wedding of Princess Diana's niece, Ceila McCorquodale - exactly four weeks after her big day. Celia, who is the younger daughter of the Princess of Wales' sister Lady Sarah McCorquodale, looked beautiful in a lace-bodiced dress and a full veil, held in place by the stunning diamond tiara worn by Princess Diana at her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981. Celia, 29, attended Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding exactly a month ago and she returned the favour by inviting the couple to her country wedding to George Woodhouse at St Andrew & St Mary's Church in Stoke Rochford.

LINCOLN You’ll know the Lincolnshire Show is held at the Showground but you may not know that it is owned by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, a registered charity whose aims are to educate people, and especially the younger generation, about food, farming and the countryside. The charity works hard to promote the importance of healthy eating, understand where our food comes from and the careers available in the agricultural industry. It is something that the team are passionate about and work on all year round. n Visit lincolnshireshowground.co.uk for more information on the charity.

Organised by Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, NHS staff are using the opportunity to celebrate and show support to one of the nation’s most valued organisations, as well as taking the opportunity to promote healthy activities that people can do to look after their own physical and mental wellbeing. The course will cover a choice of routes of 70 miles around Lincolnshire, starting and finishing at Discovery House on the St George’s site in Lincoln.

The Rise of the Post-Nuptial Agreement... By Lisa Boileau, Partner and Head of Family at Wilkin Chapman solicitors.

division of assets upon divorce and can therefore carry a large amount of weight.

While they are certainly not just for the rich and famous, prenuptial agreements are now relatively commonplace in pre-marriage planning for couples of all ages and means!

In the first throes of a marriage, it may seem unnecessary to put such measures into place and often the potential consequences of any divorce may not have been realised either by the marrying couple or their families at that time.

MANY Hollywood stars, celebrities and high profile business people, have all entered the world of the pre-nup. Indeed the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, is reported to have agreed to sign one before her Royal nuptials.

There is also a lesser-known and younger sibling of the pre-nup which is now gaining in popularity – postnuptial agreements or post-nups. When people are reminded of the possible consequences divorce can have, the reasons for that popularity are clear.

Post-nups are exactly as they sound, they are arrangements that married couples make at any stage in their lives together. Like pre-nups, they are not always binding in a court of law, however they are given much consideration when looking at the

“Post-Nups - it is never too late”

Let’s take an example: You run a sizeable family business in which your adult children have been made directors and shareholders. One of your children married 12 years ago, had children of their own and is now divorcing from their spouse. As part of the divorce settlement the value of their shareholding is to be taken into account. You are upset about this as you gifted them that shareholding and never intended that their spouse could make a claim against it – a situation that may have been avoided if sensible and

practical discussions and an agreement had been put into place prior to the marriage or at some stage afterwards.

So, you can see that while we sometimes consider pre and post-nups as part and parcel of the celebrity playground, they do in fact have a relevant and perhaps vital role to play in the lives of families in our region. And remember, even if the marriage has taken place – it is never too late. .

is month we’ve an exclusive interview with local music promoter and live events entrepreneur Colin Ward about his life and work with Live Promotions as he celebrates 50 years of life among the stars... AS THE SAYING GOES, find a job you love and you’ll never do a day’s work again in your life. It’s certainly true for local businessman Colin Ward, whose career as a promoter this month reaches the milestone of 50 years. It’s a job which has taken him around the world, but also grounded Colin in the area, where he’s lived all his life. We recently caught up with Colin at The George of Stamford in between meetings to find out how his many interests in life have intersected with his career as a live events promoter. Are we correct in saying that you’ve always been a local boy?

That’s right. I was born and raised in Spalding and was schooled at Spalding Grammar, then at Boston College and the Lincoln School of Art studying what was grandly referred to as Industrial Art - otherwise known as printing! And art was your first love, specifically album covers?

That’s right. I aspired to work either as a designer or in the music industry, and album covers is where the two interests intersected. I was in a band at the time, it was called Sounds Force Five, and we were fortunate enough to be making waves in the local music scene at venues like the area’s RAF camps, Boston’s Gliderdrome and so on. The area was an incredible place for music at the time with Jimi Hendrix, Cream and many others performing locally.

We all eventually fell into a hippy counter-culture frame of mind and the psychedelia movement yielded some stunning album covers. We had a great time travelling far and wide. The most memorable gig for me was on the beach at Perranporth in Cornwall a phenomenal open air gig that really takes me back! We became the ‘can do’ company, satisfying any client’s brief. Our most ambitious and generously monetised - campaign, which saw us hiring Concorde to fly over the offices of one of our clients whilst hosting a ‘street party’ in their head office compéred by presenter Phillip Schofield!

But then adult life beckoned?

I was torn between music and pursuing a career in art and design, so I ended up working in Peterborough and London as an artistic buyer, commissioning art for EMAP. These included promotion for events like the Isle of Man TT, my first taste of life as a promoter; needless to say, one which quickly began to appeal! It was a good job but one that was fraught with frustration too. I regularly quit the job, to the extent that it became an in-joke between my wife Daphne and I. She and I would be sitting in the car and the Managing Director would tap on the window asking me to come back into the office and come back to work! How did you begin your own events company, Live Promotions?

Some time around that point, a friend asked for help promoting a folk music event, which neatly ensured all of my interests came together; an ability to be creative, working with talented musicians and to play a part in organising an event. There was a lack of good event venues and good music acts in the area so circumstances, I felt, were right and we began Live Promotions in 1972. I say we, because as well as Daphne’s constant support, I’ve always been blessed with some excellent colleagues like George Slinger who later departed to run Birchgrove Garden Centre, and Bob Limming who has been with me for 40 years now, and is also a Director of the company. My son-in-law Tom also joined the company 12 years ago and it’s great to have a family connection in the business too.

Together we began to host events at Boston’s Assembly Rooms, local cinemas or theatres and venues as far afield as London, with acts across the genres of jazz, country music and pop music. But live music events were only half the story?

That’s right. We picked up corporate work, which was a crucial period of change for the business. Some of our clients included breweries like Skol & Tetley beers and Marlborough tobacco.

We became the ‘can do’ company, satisfying any client’s brief. We held a German-themed medieval banquet at Belvoir Castle, organised concerts on boats on the Thames, and in our most ambitious - and generously monetised - campaign, which saw us hiring Concorde to fly over the offices of one of our clients whilst hosting a ‘street party’ in their head office compéred by Phillip Schofield!

And then the ‘digital revolution’ happened?

Yes. It was a changing business climate and client work was changing as well, to become more rewards-oriented. In the mid to late 1980s we created Truckfest, and our Land Rover events. These were our in-house projects and the company underwent a huge change, hosting our own events - which were more secure by virtue of the fact that we owned them - rather than working for our clients. With success soon following?

The company grew from just a handful of people to around 20. We built relationships with venues like Lincoln Castle, Burghley House and stately homes, as well as taking Truckfest nationwide. How large is Live Promotions now?

We have 18 people in the office and host about 26 events a year, entertaining about 200,000 people annually including 60,000 at Peterborough’s flagship Truckfest event. What was your most successful moment in business?

The most prestigious event that we were involved in took place in 2012, when we organised The Queen’s Jubilee event at Burghley House. I was on the organising committee and it was attended by over 10,000 guests.

I worked closely with the late and very great Tony Worth and met HM The Queen briefly, which was one of the proudest moments of my life. Aside from that, Truckfest has been the greatest achievement... I suppose every poet has a sort of magnum opus, and that’s ours. >> 25

>> It’s so popular and well-attended that I feel really proud to be associated with it, and we’ve had no end of celebrities making appearances at the event over the years, like Noel Edmonds.

Do you have any business regrets?

Not regrets as such. In hindsight, I wish we’d have hung on to the corporate work a little longer. It was a great industry to be in, and a different matter entirely to working in the music industry. What stars and celebrities have you worked with - any favourites?

I’m no longer starstruck and I try not to have favourites, especially when we’re planning an event; we’re there to work. It sounds blasé, but when you’re putting your name to the event you have to deliver the concert and to ensure that it’s successful regardless of the talent. And you’re not a fan of backstage pass requests?

Afraid not! I cringe because musicians have to work hard and perform to the best of their ability so they can’t be begrudged their time to mentally prepare before and to ‘recover’ mentally after the event. I don’t like intruding on that. Who has impressed you most?

We’ve been very lucky to work with lots of very hard-working acts, and I’ve a bulging contacts book of really good people who are totally professional, dedicated to putting on a really great event for their audiences.

I’ve worked with Jools Holland on a number of occasions and he’s very good indeed. His drummer, Gilson Lavis, is local too and I’ve become good friends with him. They’re an incredibly successful pair. Likewise I’ve organised events with Bryan Ferry who is a total gentleman. He’s a great performer and a real professional. The presenter Fiona Bruce also worked with us three years ago to host an event akin to the last night of the proms, which was a real pleasure too.

You take pleasure in researching your musical interests?

Absolutely. And history is a great interest too, one which will see me go through phases of mild obsession... my period of fascination with the artist John Constable last year for instance.

I try to visit Venice each year, and have been to Rome a couple of times too. They’re such beautiful cities and they’re all home to really unique stories which I love exploring. Which is how you enjoy relaxing when you’re no in the office?

Oh absolutely not! I absolutely love running the business, and I couldn’t contemplate retirement. I could never fully retire as I’d be very bored. I’ve always had an interest in music and I love facilitating it for the enjoyment of other people. That’s the best thing about it.

Yes, but principally I love spending time with my family. We’ve two grown-up children who work in the aviation industry and in the family business respectively. We’ve five grandchildren, whom I absolutely adore. I’m a real ‘family man’ and I think it’s great having the kids and grandkids around us at home. We’ve a couple of dogs too; a lively wire-haired dachshund and a Cairn terrier. I love nature and I absolutely adore wildlife.

And what music is on your CD player or streaming playlist right now?

What’s the secret to a happy family life?

But generally you’re not in the business to work with celebrities?

I never switch off from the business, I’m open all hours and always on the look out for projects I can get involved in. In that sense it’s full on but it’s still a profound pleasure too.

I return to Jools Holland time and again, and love the energy and skill with which he performs. I’ve also been listening to the guitarist Albert Lee and to Rod Stewart. I’ve seen Rod live, and the Stones too quite recently, but my musical tastes are quite eclectic, and both Daphne and I enjoy classical and opera as well.

Above/Opposite: Colin’s life has seen him working with an array of celebrities and musicians from Jools Holland to Fiona Bruce to Noel Edmonds. One of his most successful events is Truckfest, which attracts 60,000 visitors in Peterborough alone.

26

We travelled to the oldest opera house in Venice where Callas made her early musical debuts, and to the destinations which inspired Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

We’ve a family of foxes that visit the garden, badgers too. I really enjoy birdwatching and escape to Norfolk regularly to watch the world go by on a beach. Simple pleasures are often the best.

Daphne and I are approaching our 50th wedding anniversary, and I think the secret is tolerance. Too many people give up on marriage these days.

Every couple will have moments that aren’t as good as others but in a marriage you’re there to support each other. My marriage has brought me more pleasure than anything else in my life as we’ve shared so many day-to-day experiences together; that’s the beauty of marrying your best friend. n Colin is the founder of Live Promotions; www.livepromotions.co.uk.

HIGHLIGHTS

East Coast OUR GUIDE TO THE

It’s too often referred to as being ‘past its time’ or ‘good back in the day,’ but we believe Lincolnshire’s fantastic coastline is one of the best you’ll find in this country. With sandy beaches, an abundance of wildlife and of course, great food, we present to you the best of Lincolnshire’s East Coast... Our coastline suffers an ‘outdated’ reputation, but it’s simply not true. e success of the beaches like Skegness in the past and the change in the nation’s choice in holiday destinations has meant it has been branded a ‘more affordable’ option. Although it’s less of a tourist hotspot these days, it still has panoramic views of golden sand weaving between swathes of Marram grass, giggling children dipping their toes in crashing waves and dogs sprinting freely through sea spray and warm summer air. It’s a beautiful place to visit and on our doorstep. If you’ve yet to experience the whole of Lincolnshire’s fabulous coastline, there are ten beaches that should be on every Yellow Belly’s bucket list. 1. Skegness Beach. Skegness’s award-winning sandy beach is long and wide with activities including donkey rides and the Fairy Dell paddling pool for younger visitors. ere’s also the Pleasure Beach and the arcade machines that offer a real sense of nostalgia and excitement. For sightseers: look out for the Jolly Fisherman, the Clock Tower which is the focal point of the town, and the Pier jutting out into the sea.

“The huts at Chapel St Leonards sit on a defensive structure built during World War Two...!”

For foodies: fish & chips is certainly elevated in this seaside town. With Chip Pan Alley and chippys scattered throughout the town and nearer the beach, you’re spoilt for choice. For dogwalkers: head to Gibraltar Point, the nearby nature reserve, and stroll along saltmarshes and fresh water habitats. Dogs are not allowed on the beach here though.

2. Cleethorpes Beach. Cleethorpes is a seaside resort with close ties to the nearby town of Grimsby, the county’s fishing capital. It offers miles of sandy beaches and a plethora of amenities and activities, including donkey rides, a paddling pool and a boating lake.

For sightseers: visit the award-winning gardens on the promenade, or walk along the well maintained pier to look back at the beach. For foodies: there are plenty of fresh seafood restaurants thanks to nearby Grimsby. Enjoy crab, lobster, or a more modest pot of cockles as you walk along the golden sand. For dogwalkers: the beach itself is dog friendly from October to Easter.

3. Chapel St Leonards Beach. This beach is well known for its strip of multi-coloured beach huts sat prominently on a defensive structure built during the Second World War. Chapel is a sand and shingle beach,

and is a perfect beach if you’re looking for somewhere a little more secluded, quiet and peaceful. For sightseers: it has to be the coloured huts which have stood there for years. For foodies: the resort town has several pubs and restaurants to try if you venture away from the beach. For dogwalkers: the beach is dog friendly after September, and is a good spot if you don’t want to bump into too many dogs, or donkeys for that matter. 4. Anderby Beach. Being very much unspoilt

by over-development, Anderby Beach is the perfect place if you want to discover the beautiful Lincolnshire coastline. It is a peaceful, tranquil place, away from the loud tourist attractions of some of the area’s better known resorts. For sightseers: this really is just a beach to enjoy an expansive view of see and sand. For dogwalkers: the beach reopens in September. 5. Sutton-on-Sea Beach. This is also a very

relaxing spot to visit, contenting itself with attractive gardens and a children’s paddling pool in addition to its sandy shores. It also has a strip of coloured beach huts, usually the backdrop to people lounging on deck chairs in the summer months. For sightseers: sunset along this beach is really special, lengthening the shadows of the huts. For foodies: head further inland for well-rated chip shops. For dogwalkers: the beach will open again in September. 6. Mablethorpe Beach. There is plenty to entertain at this beach, from an amusement arcade to kayaking and canoeing, crazy golf, donkey rides, sailing and even windsurfing. For sightseers: there is a wildlife and seal sanctuary to visit. Donna Nook is equidistant to Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes famed for its seal life. For foodies: Mablethorpe’s town is full of restaurants and bars, and has a good nightlife too. For dogwalkers: the beach is dog friendly to the left of the promenade but watch out for donkeys!

7. Ingoldmells Beach. Ingoldmells is the stretch of coast in between Skegness and Chapel St Leonards. It’s the home of funfair Fantasy Island, and is renowned for the variety of family pubs along with a great beach bar, once the only beach bar in the UK. For sightseers: look out for the ships off the coast on their way to Grimsby. For foodies: visit the beach bar. For dogwalkers: the beach is open to dogs.

1 - Lincs Pride AUG 193.qxp 02/07/2018 13:02 Page 34

8. Moggs Eye Beach. This is definitely one for dog walkers. It’s a quiet,

rural beach backed by grassy sand dunes. As well as being plenty of room for beach games the beach is used by swimmers, surfers, sea anglers and bird watchers. For sightseers: look across the rolling waves to spot the offshore wind farm in the distance. For foodies: head further inland. This is less of a tourist’s beach and so there aren’t many places to eat. For dogwalkers: there is a variety of good walks in the area. There are currently no restrictions on dog walking on the beach.

9. Saltfleetby Theddlethorpe Dunes. This is one for nature lovers. It’s a superb unspoilt landscape of salt marshland and sands. For sightseers: you can see plenty of habitats from tidal sand and mudflats, to salt and freshwater marshes. For foodies: the nearest town is Mablethorpe. For dogwalkers: it seems the tide never fully comes in here and it is always a fair walk to the waters edge, so you can have a very clean beach walk here!

10. Freiston Shore. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Freiston’s sandy shore on The Wash was developed as a sea bathing resort. By the mid-19th century there were horse races and other attractions on the beach.

However, the process of coastal accretion caused a salt marsh to develop. It’s now a great place to visit for bird watchers especially. For sightseers: look out for avocets, redshanks and plovers. For foodies: there are picnic areas dotted around the shore. For dogwalkers: keep your dog on a lead around the shore so as to not upset wildlife. n

Nature Reserves by the Coast...

www.lincstrust.org.uk

Gibraltar Point: Covering 1100 acres of pristine coastline, Gibraltar Point has sandy and muddy seashore, sand dunes, saltmarsh and freshwater marsh with ponds and lagoons home to coastal wildflowers and many birds. The new visitor centre includes a cafe and gift shop. n

Huttoft Clay Pit: This is the largest of the Sea Bank Clay Pits, which provided clay for sea bank repairs after the 1953 floods. There is a large open water area as well as extensive reedbeds. Moorhen, water rail, reed bunting, reed and sedge warblers all nest here, and 15 species of duck have been recorded. n

Donna Nook: The reserve consists of dunes, slacks and inter-tidal areas. Coastal processes alter the natural features from year to year. In winter, there is a breeding colony of grey seals, with more than 1,300 pups born annually. A viewing area at the foot of the sand dunes reduces disturbance. n

Tetney Blow Wells: The reserve consists of four large blow wells with associated habitats, which include damp woodland, meadow and old water-cress beds that have been colonised by marsh vegetation and reedbeds. The area was used as a watercress farm from 1948 to 1961. n

Toby’s Hill: This is a remnant of a 700 year old dune system. The reserve is possibly the highest summit on the coast; it is believed to have been raised to improve its use as a war-time watchpoint site. The reserve is largely dune grassland with scrub and is of considerable botanical interest. n

Anderby Marsh: This is the newest reserve on the Lincolnshire coast. It is expected that this nature reserve will help support a range of conservation priority birds including lapwing and redshank. With the expansion of reedbed it is also hoped that marsh harrier and otters may be attracted area. n

The Star Ball 2018

When You Wish Upon a Star - Dream Making for Sick Children at

What a difference an evening can make, and what a difference the charity When you Wish Upon A Star makes, too. The charity is dedicated to granting the wishes of sick children between the ages of two and 16 who are living with life-threatening illnesses. Since 1990, the charity has granted some 17,000 wonderful wishes, creating precious memories,

and transforming the lives of some truly courageous children and their families. As a nongovernment funded charity, When You Wish Upon A Star relies solely on the generosity of people like the attendees of a recent ball at Brigg’s Forest Pines, attended by over 100 people. The event was held in the hotel’s Tennyson Suite and featured a four course

meal, dinner jazz, a live party band, raffle, auction, and chocolate fountain, whilst the dress code was ‘red carpet glamour.’ n When You Wish Upon A Star will host an evening with Simon Weston on Friday 7th September at The Humber Royal Hotel, Grimsby. FOOD & DRINK

The Ram in Newark

The Ram in Newark is a bar & brasserie for all the seasons. In spring and summer, enjoy a refreshing drink in the outdoor seating area, and in the cooler seasons, there are cosy corners to enjoy warm drinks by the roaring fireplaces. This month, the Ram has several other reasons to dine in the beautiful 18th century Georgian restaurant... If you were to ask a random selection of people in Britain what grinds their gears the most, you’ll probably hear common complaints like people pushing in queues, bad drivers or perhaps rude shop assistants.

Words & Photos: Tilly Wilkinson.

Head Chef

LUKE HICKMAN

However, if you were to ask a random selection of people in Newark currently, nearly all will answer roadworks. As improvements are carried out in the town, it has been very tricky to get around for the past few months.

For Rebecca Collin at the Ram, she is particularly pleased that by the time Pride goes to press, the roads will be open, the diggers will have stopped their monotonous drone and fluorescent cones will no longer be lining the street outside the bar & brasserie. I suppose it’s a minor inconvenience one has to deal with when your restaurant is in such a central location, in a beautiful historic town. The restaurant has had a bit of a change with its management team, and Luke

“THE RAM WILL HOLD HOST TO SPECIAL DINING EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, LIKE SPANISH TAPAS NIGHT AND A SEAFOOD NIGHT TOO...”

Hickman who has starred in one of our dining out features before, has joined the team as head chef. He’s introduced new menus but has not changed the dining experience too much from its original style don’t fix it if it ain’t broke - he’s just put his own stamp on it.

What has been introduced are special events and evenings throughout the year like a very popular Spanish Tapas Night and Vegan Tapas Night planned for August, to attract new audiences.

Food Experience: Luke has worked in the kitchens of well known restaurants across Lincolnshire but came to the Ram this year.

Food Philosophy: The same effort... just a more casual environment.

Food Heaven: Fillet steak; it’s simply and easy and really tasty too!

Food Hell: My food hell would have to be lazy food scraped off a baking tray!

47

1 - Lincs Pride AUG 193.qxp 02/07/2018 13:03 Page 48

“We decided to host special events like this throughout the year, and we’re planning an evening of seafood in September too, to attract new diners,” says Rebecca. “We love our regulars and returning customers and it is also important to us that people who have never been here give us a try. The special event evenings are bringing in new custom, and also new regulars!” Luke and the team are really trying to promote the fact that they can cater to all people now. It’s important they feel that whether you have dietary requirements, allergies or perhaps you’re vegan, they can provide you with a dining experience that runs parallel with the regular menu.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS Lunchtime: Monday - Friday 12 noon -3pm Dinner: Monday – Thursday 5pm - 8pm

Starters

Thai spiced fish cakes with sweet chilli and coriander mayonnaise, £5.95.

Tempura vegetables with a peanut satay and coriander dressing, £4.95. Whipped goats’ cheese mousse with a beetroot terrine, raw beet salad and crostini, £6.50.

Main Courses

Home roasted honey and mustard ham with fried eggs, sautéed potatoes, salad and piccalilli, £11.95. Not only can they cater for all types of diners, they can also cater for a lot of them! There are around 50 covers inside, 30 in the live lounge, 20 in the Colonel’s bar and up to 60 covers in the outdoor dining area, not to mention the upstairs ballroom which will accommodate up to 100 people. “We do cater for weddings, and the registry office in Newark is literally across the road from us. If you’re a smaller party, we have a private dining area which caters for around 30 to 35 people, separate from the rest of the restaurant. If you want to use the Ram as your reception, the ballroom is a great space for weddings too.”

The food is outstanding, but the best reason to dine at the Ram is its provision of drink. The enormous bar is very chic with an upholstered front in keeping with the Ram’s Georgian style, copper lighting above, and a wine cellar opposite. It also contains over 30 varieties of gin and 10 vodka varieties too, not to mention the real ales available.

Unfortunately, I visited a little too early for a tipple, but I still enjoyed the sun trap that is the outdoor seating area/beer garden as

I awaited Luke’s recommended dishes to photograph (and taste!).

To start, he served the chicken and ham hock terrine with sage bread sauce, pickled apple salsa and olive crouton, and a whipped goats’ cheese mousse with beetroot terrine, raw beet salad and crostini. Both were superbly presented, and Luke assured me that almost all of the ingredients originate from suppliers in Lincolnshire or Newark. The main came as quite the intended surprise, as I was served ‘The Ram’ Burger. The beef patty came with smoked bacon, Stilton cheese, lettuce and tomato in a sesame seeded charcoal - yes, charcoal - bun and chunky triple cooked chips. The fun twist on the burger’s colour definitely draws the eye, and the burger was absolutely delicious, as was the following pan seared hake fillet with new potato terrine.

The desserts - a cherry bakewell and Eton mess - finished off a perfect round of dishes from Luke, and confirmed that the Ram is not only a warm and inviting space to dine in, but a fantastic restaurant too.

Pan seared hake fillet with new potato terrine, samphire, stem broccoli, charred carrot and light chicken jus rosti, £15.95.

Desserts

Eton mess with raspberries, strawberries, basil meringue and vanilla cream, £5.95.

Cherry Bakewell and clotted cream ice cream, £5.95. White chocolate crème brûlée served with a shortbread, £6.50. NB: Featured dishes are subject to change.

For the beetroot salad, Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and serve with a sprinkling of salt and pepper to season. This doesn’t need anything else. The dressed crab can be served as it comes straight from IshFish with just a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of parsley. For the potato salad, first of all gently boil your potatoes in a pan of lightly salted water until they are tender.

Drain the potatoes and leave to cool slightly before slicing all of them in halves or quarters depending on size. In a bowl, mix together the crème fraiche, lemon and some of the mint, along with a pinch of black pepper and salt for seasoning. Place the potato salad into a serving bowl and just sprinkle with the remaining mint to serve, and place on the table with the beetroot salad. n

Lincolnshire is centered around farming, the countryside and traditional living. That is so often reflected in the county’s properties, that it has become stereotypical for a Lincolnshire home to include those qualities.

This month’s home is certainly the exception to the rule. This home on the Fairways in Torksey is probably the most modern home on the market in Lincolnshire currently and everything has been created and designed to an exceptionally high standard.

The home is set within a substantial two acre plot and the accommodation covers 11,000 square feet in total. Above: The walnut cantilever staircase and atrium covers all floors.

62

Main/Right: The master suite offers plenty of space, a drawing room and en suite.

It has been designed in a modernist style, finished to the highest level with a stunning 52ft kitchen with freestanding Porphyry Italian stone worktop, double height dining room and a unique central atrium with open landing over all three floors.

With windows and bifold doors that open up onto the patio, the freestanding kitchen with a honed finish features an undermounted sink and Siemens appliances with integrated halogen hob with ceiling mounted extractor, two dishwashers, two ovens and two fridges. The specialist construction techniques have allowed for a very light and airy feel with seven bedrooms all with en suites. Complimenting the spacious interiors, the landscaped gardens are designed by Chelsea Flower Show award-winning Stephen Welch.

deciduous trees and a formal garden to the rear with paved patio and infinity water feature.

Back in the home and entering through the front entrance, you’re welcomed by the large three storey central atrium and staircase.

You will also find the kitchen, dining room and general open plan living area on this floor in addition to a large utility area, a plant store, a leisure room/cinema, store room, bathroom and snug. On the first floor, you will find the games room which could be a library or office space, the guest suite which comes with a dressing room and en suite, the gym and two further bedrooms both with en suites.

Finally reaching the top floor of this magnificent property, there is a large balcony that looks over the landscaped gardens accessed by the master suite, which comes with an en suite, drawing room and further bathroom. On the other side of the landing on the top floor is the last three bedrooms that all come with separate en suites. The property is set within this exclusive gated development that is adjoining the renowned Torksey Golf Club consisting of 12 individual designed properties all in substantial plots. It’s definitely one to view to really appreciate the grandeur and size of its imposing façade. Left: The dining room is on the ground floor and is adjacent to the kitchen and living room.

ARTIST ANTIQUES A painting arrives at the Grantham saleroom for further research. It is an oil on canvas almost 100cm wide from a very good local source. Items of such criteria are regularly seen at this busy auction house; however, the subject matter - a high quality image of Lincoln Cathedral from the Brayford is rare and crucially its lack of signature is very unusual on this enigma of a picture.

Helping to date the work can be done so by looking at it. Architectural changes from then to now would indicate a time post 1824, also one of the Brayford buildings is named ‘Norris’ this firm ceased trading from these premises by the early 1870s, so it is unlikely the work was done after then.

Peter Jackson Cabinet Makers Ltd

These facts point to the work being executed in the lifetime of the great artist John Wilson Carmichael (1800 – 1868), well known for a comparable picture from a similar location of Lincoln Cathedral done in around 1858. Stylistically the works are alike and it is just possible they are by the same hand.

Few fully attributed works come up for such a famous artist but two watercolours of Lincolnshire scenes sold in the early 2000s signed and fully attributed to Carmichael also resemble the layout of this much larger oil: with clusters of figures in similar areas and of comparable artistic styles. The lack of signature on this picture though is frustrating. It has been relined, cleaned and renovated and any attribution may have been lost if it has been cut down, there is simply no signature to find.

The fact remains it was almost certainly painted during Carmichael’s lifetime, in a comparable style, but a full attribution is tricky. If any Pride readers have similar works, we would be delighted to hear from you so we can continue to research further, all comments would be gratefully received! n

Relaxed Elegance

HANDMADE BY CHISELWOOD A Lincolnshire resident is the proud owner of ‘one of the best kitchens in the world’ after local firm Chiselwood became the sole European finalist in the Sub-Zero & Wolf World Kitchen Design Contest 2017

Martin and Mel Holliday must have been pretty pleased with themselves when they completed this splendid kitchen in one of Lincolnshire’s beautifully restored Grade II rectories. Not as pleased, though, as its new owner Jane Joyce who, as well as having a beautiful and functional kitchen, can also boast that her new room was selected as one of the best kitchens in the world - and the sole European finalist in the World Kitchen Design Contest 2017, hosted by über-luxurious kitchen appliance brand Sub-Zero and Wolf.

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of the kitchen in your home. It’s the most used (and sometimes abused) room whether you’re an individual; a couple or a family with pets or legions of children and grandchildren.

It has to function as surrogate reception room, somewhere to entertain and dine, as well as a place to catch up on office work, a space to allow the children to dispatch their homework, and a place that can accommodate changes in temperature, moisture and steam, whilst

remaining easy to clean and standing up to the slings and arrows of outrageous mistreatment as part of the daily family grind. The demands we place on our kitchens are gruelling in terms of how well we need them to function and how good we want them to look. There are no second chances to ensure the design of your kitchen is correct; it’s either perfect first time or a missed opportunity. >>

“As the couple have lived in Lincolnshire for most of their lives they prefer and enjoy working in and near their county...” >> That’s where Lincoln’s Chiselwood kitchens really come into their own. Since the company began in 1989, Design Director Martin and his Co-Founder - Managing Director and wife Mel Holliday - have been designing completely bespoke kitchens for clients, a career which has culminated in them designing one of the best kitchens in the world and the sole European finalist in the World Kitchen Design Contest 2017 in the former conservatory of the Lincolnshire rectory. Their work has seen Martin and Mel working increasingly further afield, with many commissions in London and even overseas.

This has, however, led to the misconception that the company is either prohibitively expensive or disinterested in picking up work locally... and with an abundence of work the couple haven’t needed to proactively seek work - locally or otherwise. As the couple have lived in Lincolnshire for most of their lives they prefer and enjoy working in and near their county.

MEET LINCOLN’S MARTIN HOLLIDAY... Martin is Founder and Design Director of Chiselwood.

The firm was the only European Kitchen Designer to reach the final of the Sub Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest in 2017 and also reached the final four Kitchen Designers in the UK in 2018 in the prestigious KBB Review Retail & Design Awards. Martin was awarded the title, Kitchen Designer of the Year in 2005 and received the National Design Innovation Award in 2006 from the industry body KBSA. Martin advises on his clients’ whole projects from cabinetry through to lighting schemes. n

Questions & Answers

KITCHEN DESIGN

What should I look for in a kitchen designer? “No two families are the same... so, no two kitchens should be the same either. Look for a firm which can provide a truly bespoke kitchen, one which can really listen - and really respond to - your personal needs.”

Aren’t all kitchens bespoke? “Sadly, some companies profess to provide bespoke kitchens but merely put bespoke components into standard cabinetry. Firms like Chiselwood have the traditional cabinet making skills in house to accommodate any size and shape.”

The Details Bespoke, to Chiselwood, really does mean bespoke - with all cabinetry created from hardwood rather than mere cupboard fronts grafted onto mass-market carcassses.

As a client you’ll deal only with Martin, and all commissions are project managed with all tradespeople answerable to Martin. Clients are invited to see the firm’s 8,000sq ft workshops, and to see their kitchen progressing through Fitting typically takes place in four to five days and is completed in house with a standard snagging visit and unsurpassed service which Top/Left: The company provides luxury high end appliances, sinks and brightware too.

includes help to source premium sinks, their brightware and appliances from names like Sub-Zero, Wolf, Aga and Miele.

A boiling water tap, appliances from Sub-Zero and Wolf and integrated dishwashers & trays help to keep surfaces free and ensure an efficient working space.

Above: Every element of Jane’s kitchen was created in Chiselwood’s 8,000sq ft workshops in Saxilby.

Handmade, bespoke, and with no ‘standard ranges,’ Chiselwood can bring any project to fruition. “Working with Chiselwood was fantastic,” says Jane.

“It’s great to know that our kitchen has been specifically designed for us... I have never seen a kitchen so beautiful!” n Chiselwood’s Martin and Mel are based in Saxilby and work all over Lincolnshire. Call 01522 704446 or see www.chiselwood.co.uk.

What else should I look for? “Work with a provider who can consult with you, and who can project manage and install your new kitchen for you; one who will see your project through to completion and snagging.” How much should I budget? “Chiselwood’s kitchens reflect their hand-made nature but we can accommodate many more budgets than people think. We’ve created kitchens for as little as £20,000 and also ones which have high end price tags of six figures. We can accommodate any size of room and any style of property.” n

Dan Rendall: THE PIANO MAN

Dan Rendall is Lincolnshire’s very own Billy Joel, but in addition to tickling the ivories, Dan tunes, repairs and restores the county’s pianos. This month we visited his studio and attended a tuning to discover the workings of the musical maestro... The piano has always been an inspiration and a passion of Dan Rendall’s. He has played almost all of his life, and knew it was an area of work he always wanted to be interested in. “At first I was passionate about the music, and about playing, but discovered I also had an interest in the instrument itself and its inner workings.”

“That’s when I decided to study to be a piano tuner technician at the widely acclaimed Newark Piano School. I covered all aspects of piano tuning, repair and restoration on both upright and grand pianos to a very high level.”

“After completing the course, I started my own business, ‘Dan Rendall Piano Tuning & Repair. Since then I have been tuning and servicing pianos all over Lincolnshire. My clients include schools, theatres, professional musicians and of course private owners.” Dan can tune any piano and quote for it, depending on whether it’s an upright or grand piano, when it was last tuned and what exactly he will need to do to fix it. “Most of the pianos I work on for clients hold a lot of sentimental value and are often family heirlooms, so I’m always very careful and fix the pitch of every key.”

“Many people don’t even realise that a piano is made up of strings, and is tuned in a similar way to a guitar; when you press one key a hammer hits three strings at the back of the

Alison Pratt, NFU On The Farm with...

Alison Pratt, at the NFU East Midlands, discusses the importance of soil and how our farming ancestors transformed the world of farming because of this... I’ve probably mentioned before that my family were what was called ‘mixed farmers.’ That means that we had several different enterprises on the farm, in our case we kept sheep, beef cattle, hens to lay eggs, pigs and grew arable crops.

ON THE FARM THIS MONTH

Arable Sector: At the end of August, farmers will start to sow oilseed rape and ploughing and cultivation work will start. Field peas, spring barley and winter wheat will be harvested too this month. June through to August is the busiest time for arable farmers. Livestock Sector: At the end of August, ewes will be mated with rams for early spring lambing.

Until the 60s and 70s this mix of farming types was the mainstay of much of the farming world. Many family farms kept both animals and grew crops but with increased mechanisation, farmers specialised and, especially in the East of England, many chose to be just arable producers rather than being a mix of both. But as with many aspects of human existence, the cycle is coming full circle and livestock are making a comeback to our arable farms. The reason is that there is a growing consciousness about the management of our soils. When farms have livestock as well as growing crops, the fields are rotated between crops and grass or fodder crops such as maize or fodder beet.

Those of you who remember your farming history will know that Charles ‘Turnip’ Townshend invented the fourcourse rotation on his estate in Norfolk in the 1730s. This new way of farming rotated different crops - turnips, barley, clover and wheat - so that soil nutrients and organic matter were maintained and grazing livestock contributed fertiliser in the form of their manure, thus increasing soil fertility.

nitrogen to soils and potatoes, maize and oilseed rape, which grow roots of different depths to help with structure and drainage.

The agricultural revolution of the 1700s changed that and by 1850, our population stood at 16.6m. Farming had found ways to increase production by enhancing the fertility of the soils and by growing more crops and producing more animals on the same area of land.

So our ancestors were clever and fore-sighted, they understood the need to produce food and not deplete our most valuable asset; soil. We’re still using those techniques today and have remembered our history lessons well.

So successful was the rotation that in the first half of the 18th century, wheat yields in England increased from 11.5m quarters of wheat in 1705, to 95m quarters in 1765. In 1750 the English population stood at about 5.7m, and although it had fluctuated in the centuries before then, it had never really grown because our farming industry could not feed any more mouths.

Today, crop rotations mimic the four-course cropping of our forebears. Now we grow pulses, such as peas and beans to add

By growing overwintered crops called ‘cover crops,’ we can increase soil organic matter by ploughing them back into the soil in spring. Where it’s available, farmyard manure, sometimes from neighbouring farms like poultry units, is spread on land to add nutrients and organic matter. And for some farmers, bringing back livestock to the farm is helping to reduce the need for fertilisers.

ALFORD MANOR HOUSE GARDEN

A Traditional Take on

GARDENING

History is made up of interesting stories but they require artefacts and evidence to ensure they’re true. It’s unfortunate that so many stories would have been lost over the years. That’s why we’re so lucky to have places like Alford Manor House to ensure our county’s stories are remembered... Words & Images: Tilly Wilkinson.

1 - Lincs Pride AUG 193.qxp 02/07/2018 13:06 Page 88

“There is a medicinal garden bordered by formal topiary and filled with plants that were once used for all kinds of treatments...”

Gardening requires a considerable amount of time and effort, but it’s a very simple task compared to life in the 17th century. Imagine mowing grass without a lawn mower or getting rid of autumn leaves without a leaf blower? Well, it was what life was like for gardeners in the 1600s, and in an effort to recreate a garden of that time, that’s what life is like for the voluntary gardeners at Alford Manor House. Ok, granted they make use of modern machinery, but the garden is kept to the style of the time the manor house was lived in. That means producing food that the owners could eat, growing cutting flowers the family could use in the house and of course formal areas for the guests to walk through in the afternoon. The garden encompasses all of these things and more. Ken Penson is the elected head gardener at Alford although he’s assured me it’s all run very democratically. Everyone, including Ken, are local volunteers who just don’t want to see local history lost, all passionate about protecting and remembering the past and gardening too. He’s been gardening here for four years now, in addition to maintaining his own garden at home! “It’s something for me to do in retirement, a good way of socialising and getting involved in the local community, and I love to garden especially when it comes to growing vegetables,” says Ken. “I like to eat what I can grow.”

In addition to reflecting the type of garden the manor house would have once had, the gardens also showcase flowers, vegetables and fruit that originate from Lincolnshire. The apples in the orchard are a Lincolnshire heritage variety and there are ‘radio’ peas in the vegetable patch, bred by a local man down the road but they grew too tall for suppliers and farmers to take them up.

As well as radio peas, name a fruit or vegetable and the garden grows it. There are cucumbers, radishes, lettuce varieties, potatoes, plums, prunes, raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, grapes, cherries, asparagus and even globe and Jerusalem artichokes. There is a meadow to the left that features pear and apple trees as well as a rare tulip tree; there are only a handful you’ll find in this 88

country, and it’s decorated in beautiful yellow flowers in full bloom.

There’s a medicinal garden which is bordered by formal topiary, and features the kind of medicinal plants the family would actually use for treatments in the 17th - 18th century.

The garden is completely walled, and one wall is covered in herbs like dill and rosemary. This leads to a grapevine that encompasses a pergola, and to the vegetable patch at the end of the garden. You can also reach this via rose-covered pergola walk. Miss Dorothy Higgins owned the house before the Alford Civic Trust took it over and she was a passionate gardener and nurse in World War One. To ‘brighten up’ the hospital in Bonsecours, she requested by letter, that still exists in the house, that they send over a list of requested seeds. The seeds she requested are now growing in a dedicated area in the garden alongside a collection of plants discovered by Joseph Banks, the famous Lincolnshire botanist.

If you’ve ever been to Alford Manor House but overlooked the gardens, it’s definitely worth a second trip to see it for yourself ! n

WEDDINGS

A Sparkling Party

A Christmas engagement for two childhood sweethearts meant Tom and Georgia would tie the knot with friends and family surrounding them enjoying good music, good food and great laughs at their festival-themed summer wedding... Images: AW Photographic, 07775 724598, www.awphotographic.org.uk.

Our featured local couple are childhood sweethearts and tied the knot after Tom proposed to Georgia on Christmas morning. Georgia is an Insurance Broker and Tom is an Electrician, both living in Lincolnshire. They met at Georgia’s cousin’s 18th birthday party, and things went from there.

“He proposed on Christmas morning,” says Georgia. “Every year I go on about which is my favourite bauble on the tree and it’s usually the newest. Tom hung my engagement ring right next to it, and while we were dancing clumsily and laughably in the lounge he kept asking which bauble was my favourite, trying to get me to look over.” “I remember seeing it on the tree and thinking ‘he wouldn’t hang a ring on the Christmas tree unless it was THE ring!’”

“We started planning straight away. First of all, we decided we were going to have a teepee wedding. We love going to festivals and we felt a teepee was the perfect mix of a traditional marquee wedding and an informal festival vibe. It was very pretty but with a music theme to it.” “I chose my dress on the first appointment I made! I was with my mum and my sister looking at dresses with a little sparkle. All were pretty but just weren’t special enough. The sales assistant who was helping us, said that if it was sparkle I wanted, she might just

have just the thing. She returned with a beautiful dress with a layer covered in glitter just under the top layer, which made it look like it had tiny diamonds all over. I tried it on, my mum and sister were in tears and I knew it was the one!”

“Andrew Wheeler was a superb photographer and made us feel very relaxed on the day as we both hate our picture being taken. My ring was designed by local jeweller Daniella Draper to fit perfectly around my engagement ring. I absolutely love it and Tom has the matching gold band.”

“One of my best friends made our cake which was really special. Our flowers and decorations were by The Wedding & Flower Boutique. The teepee decorations took my breath away the first time I saw it finished! Jo went above and beyond helping us on the day, and it was everything we’d envisaged.” “When it came to actually walking down the aisle, I can honestly say I have never been so scared in my life. The whole morning was calm, but when we arrived at the church I just couldn’t stop crying!”

“It was an experience you can’t prepare for, and thank goodness for my Grandad helping me down the aisle as I couldn’t have done that part of the day on my own!” “The reception was honestly one of the most fun and memorable days of our lives, 93

- WEDDINGS -

“The highlight of the day for us was just stepping back and seeing how happy everyone else was...” and what really made it for us was to hear so many of our guests say the same thing! The food was amazing, speeches were hilarious and the entertainment was fantastic.”

The dance floor did not empty all evening and well into the early hours of the morning which just proved how much fun everyone was having with us! The highlight for us was definitely just how happy everyone else was to be there.”

After the wedding, Georgie and Tom jetted off to the Maldives, which Georgia says was the perfect relaxing destination.

“We planned the whole wedding in just nine months which was pretty amazing but also exhausting and being on that peaceful tiny island in our own little world was exactly what we needed. I have never been to any place like it in my life, it was beautiful.” “A final word of thanks to our incredible suppliers and of course our family and friends who were there to celebrate with us.” 94

Canwick House Residential Care Home, Specialising in Dementia Care

H

WINNERS WINNERS WINNERS Canwick House Care Home is delighted to be crowned national multi award winners for this year’s Care Home Awards 2018. This honourable occasion was held at the ExCel, London on Wednesday 27 June 2018. Staff attended the event, proudly accepting both awards on behalf of all at the Home. This rare feat is truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Home’s staff. With more entries than ever and the highest levels of care on display, the awards were extremely hotly contested this year.

WINNER: Canwick Classics Category: Marketing, Advertising or PR Judges quote: "Unanimous vote made this the clear winner" In collaboration with Beverley 107.8FM,

Canwick House Care Home debuted “ Canwick House Radio”

Judges quote: "Lovely project, recognising the powerful importance of loss".

The unique concept from Canwick House utilises the components of a traditional radio show and customises this taking them on a journey from the 1940’s to the 1970’s for the enjoyment of Residents and their families.

Canwick Remembers is a remembrance day held in honour of the Residents at Canwick House Care Home, organiser Gabby Cooper explains “It serves as a reminder of those whom have blessed our lives with joy but are no longer with us”

The 70 minute-long radio show features the music, jingles, and call-in conversations of a traditional radio show. “However, Canwick House Radio is unique!” says Catherine Paul, Registered Manager at the Home, “We feature Resident’s family, friends and staff members from Canwick House as the call-in guests, sharing anecdotes with the radio presenter and the opportunity to dedicate a song to their loved one”

WINNER: Canwick Remembers Category: Communication with residents and families

This special day provides the time and space for staff and family members to reconnect and celebrate their beloved ones and to meet other families sharing in this memory. It’s a service that provides a platform of support for those grieving or feeling isolated; and a reminder to all, that the doors of Canwick House are always open for you. Catherine and the team at Canwick House are incredibly excited in the lead up to the Awards ceremony, and are feeling proud of this recognition for their hard work so far!

This fast-absorbing treatment is enriched with Vitamin C to increase collagen and hyaluronic acid production, ginseng to stimulate blood circulation and energise tired skin and caffeine to alleviate puffiness. The fresh orange scent is perfect for that extra pickme-up in the morning too.

2. Help for Hair

It’s important to look after your hair in the sun. This treatment from Davines is to stop hair feeling crispy after a day’s sunbathing. Shea Butter softens and hydrates even the driest strands, while Chinotto di Savona extract protects and smoothes. Davines, £21.

3. Protection First

There’s nothing chic about sunburn and prevention is better than a cure! Invest in a good suncream this summer and you’ll maintain a beautiful tan all year round without peeling. Try La Mer’s Broad Spectrum fluid, SPF 50. La Mer, £80.

4. A Gentle Glow

Estée Lauder’s range for summer, Bronze Goddess, has been a huge success and for good reason. The fragrances are sublime and the bronzers give you the perfect sunkissed glow on bare skin or alongside your normal foundation. Estée Lauder £34.

The absurdly named ‘Brazilian Bum Bum Cream’ should be used sparingly; just a dab here and a dab there. However, this little orange pot has quite deservedly been a bestseller this year thanks to its incredible abilities to save dry skin in seconds. It also contains a secret Amazonian ingredient, guaraná, which contains one of the most potent forms of caffeine for tightened skin, so pack this miracle cream in your suitcase!

UK’s Biggest Egg Producer in Alford! ALFORD LJ Fairburn, based in Alford, was a company that was started five years after the owners decided to break away from being a contract egg producer and go it alone. Major Plans for Sleaford

SLEAFORD A new school, shops and community centre have been proposed for a massive new housing scheme in Sleaford - but not everyone is convinced the development will be a good thing for the town. Planning permission to build 1,450 new homes as part of the Handley Chase development, which will swell the number of households in Sleaford by about a quarter, was granted in July 2015. More detailed plans have now been submitted which include a community centre, shops including a Co-op convenience store, and a 64 space car park. Another application to build a new primary school, nursery, health centre and care home are expected to be built as part of the development. Some people have welcomed the proposal for the extra amenities in the town, but others are not convinced it will be enough to cope with such a large influx of new residents. The application is subject to consultation with the public and stakeholders before the final decision is made.

ELECTRIC DREAMS:

THE GAME

CHANGER

Every so often there comes along a game-changer; a car which is so profoundly well-resolved that it defines a whole new sector of the car market. Jaguar’s I-Pace is just such a car; electric dreams, made real!

Jaguar I-Pace EV400 HSE

£74,445

Oh! Oh! It’s sublime! Every so often there’s a car emerging from the haze of mediocrity to give a fresh dewy dawn to a sector or to create a completely new one. Think about the original Mini, the E-Type, the Range Rover, even. Respectively they made cars small affordable or sexy and desirable or practical and luxurious.

Jaguar’s new I-Pace is similarly endowed with a sufficient level of uniqueness to be just as iconic. I-Pace is an electric car, but not a combustion one to which a hybrid system has been grafted, but a genuine, designed-from-the-ground-up electric car.

Tesla got there first, and other manufacturers have designed hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius, or dedicated electric cars like Nissan’s Leaf, but this is the first mainstream executive SUV designed from the ground up to be the fuel-free future of executive motoring.

The car is achingly good looking. Not just smart or modern but absolutely great from absolutely any angle... and if you think it looks good in photos, in the flesh it’s even more of a joy to behold. >> 116

117

1 - Lincs Pride AUG 193.qxp 02/07/2018 13:08 Page 118

>> The car has just one powertrain, EV400, which refers to the power generated by its motor and 90kWh battery combination.

Firstly don’t worry about running out of juice. Unlike plug-in hybrids with their circa 30-mile range, I-Pace will travel 298 miles (480km) on a single charge.

Charging the I-Pace on a rapid charger takes 40 minutes for 80% range, 100km range in 15 minutes. Using a domestic 13-amp plug, will necessitate overnight charging for just over 10 hours.

Crikey, it’s quick too. Being electric, all of the torque is available the instant the juice flows, so you’ll crack 60mph in 4.5 seconds, and reach 124mph flat out. To put that into context, that’s Porsche 911 Carrera quick. 118

“Don’t worry about running out of power. Unlike hybrids with their 30-mile ranges, I-Pace will travel 298 miles on a single charge.” Because the car is electric, there’s also a surprising amount of room in the cabin and an additional, dinky little boot under the bonnet. There’s five seats, an automatic transmission with no clutch, and all-wheel drive.

Three trim levels are available; S, SE and HSE. All models have a reversing camera, navigation and powered seats. SE grade adds leather seats, power tailgate, adaptive cruise control whilst HSE models are loaded with a 360° all round view camera, 18-way adjustable heated and cooled front seats, and heated rear seats.

Handling is sublime thanks to all of the mechanical bits being under the floor, low to the ground, which in turn facilitates 50:50 weight distribution, and being a thoroughly modern car, it’s has 4G wi-fi, over-the-air software update, voice control and no fewer than six USB ports, plus the ability to be linked to your smart phone to check battery charge, remotely turn on the climate control and so on. I-Pace is not just the best looking, but also the most advanced and impressive new car launch you’ll see this year... we absolutely love it! n

Plug in, turn on, drop out: The best electric SUVs...

Tesla Model X, £71,405 - £129,155: Tesla has set the motoring world alight with its Model S sports saloon, and its Model X is an SUV version with all wheel drive, available in 75kWh, 100kWh or 100kWh Performance versions. Because the cars have been designed from the ground up as electric vehicles, there’s no legacy compromise in Tesla cars’ design left over from combustion engine roots, and with Tesla’s gigantic iPad to control almost all of the vehicle’s functions, the car’s interior has a modern, ultra-minimalist look. Ranges of anywhere between 259 miles and 336 miles, 0-60mph in 4.9secs to 2.9secs. n

Bentley Bentayga Plug-In £180,000 (est): Pairing a 3.0V6 petrol engine with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, the Bentayga is a game-changer for Bentley, and its plug-in version will be too. Prices will be confirmed as Pride goes to press, but expect a premium over even the V12 version of the SUV. Claimed electric-only range of 31 miles, refinement and a quiet experience will be prioritised over performance. Technical data is scarce but expect to achieve 100mpg combined, and the car will emit just 75g CO2. The Bentayga has a top-down camera, adaptive cruise control and automatic parking too. n

JAGUAR I-PACE 400EV HSE Price: £74,445, available now. Motor/Drivetrain: 90kWh motor, 400ps, all wheel drive, auto transmission. Performance: 0-60mph 4.5 secs. 124mph top speed. Range/Eco: 298 mile range, 0g/km Co2. 13% BIK. Equipment: 360 camera, sat nav, adaptive cruise, 18-way heated/cooled leather seats. n

Volvo XC90 T8 £62,500 - £71,300: Volvo simply can’t do a thing wrong right now, and the XC90 is a superb example of an alternative to the triumvirate of German luxury car makers, Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Even in top Inscription Pro trim, the XC90 undercuts its rivals. It’s loaded with equipment, from ventilated and heated massaging nappa seats to adaptive cruise, parking camera and navigation. 0-60mph 5.8secs; 108mpg. n

Mitsubishi’s Outlander plug in car is still our PHEV-ourite... MITSUBISHI The UK’s favourite plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) remains the Outlander, selling over 500 cars a month and nearly 2,500 a quarter. Available from just £32,305, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is capable of 166.1 MPG (according to official NEDC fuel economy figures) with an electric range of up to 33 miles. It can be rapid-charged in 25 minutes and can be fully charged from a domestic home charge point in 3.5 hours. Other benefits also include ultra-low company car tax of just 13%, along with exemption from the London congestion charge and first year road tax. There are currently around 36,800 Outlander PHEVs on UK roads. n

SKODA Skoda, now part of the Volkswagen and Audi family, has successfully managed to put all of the 1980s jokes to rest, and its cars, such as the Superb, a 3-Series, A4 and C-Class challenger, whose build quality could be described as bulletproof. However, in the case of this Superb, an estate with a 2.0 190ps engine and a £118,688 price tag, can quite legitimately be described as bullet-proof. That’s because it has been upgraded to offer PAS300 armoured certification. It can resist most type of ballistic and bullet attacks, and is likely to find a home with VIPs under police protection. n

Audi’s new A6 is an important car for the firm; it’s a volume seller in the most competitive class that the German manufacturer competes in. Head to head with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class, it’ll need to be one heck of a car!

Making its debut this month, the Audi A6 is a really important car for Audi. at’s because the so-called mid-sized executive sector is the most fiercely fought battle ground, occupied not just by the A6, but the Mercedes E-Class with its beautiful cabin, and the BMW 5-Series with its fabulous reputation for driving dynamics.

e new A6 is also a car that will need to offer both frugal company car models, but also a storming RS6 version to compete with BMW’s 520ed and the M5. e cars’ customers are typically company car driving executives who demand the ability to chew through motorway miles and massage away executive stress whilst still offering a bit of poke when the family vacate the five seats and generous saloon boot. e car will be offered with a 2.0TDi engine, the most economical and a great

option for company car drivers, but also two 3.0TDi engines in different states of tune and a range topping 3.0 TSi petrol unit.

GOLF TIPS

Jordan Wrisdale’s PROFESSIONAL GOLFER

TIPS & TRICKS Even if you have the perfect swing from tee off, if you can’t putt the ball, your score can quickly add up. Professional golfer Jordan Wrisdale gives his tips on how to make the shot a little easier...

“Putting is an easy way for you to add points to your overall score, so it’s worth perfecting the shot,” says Jordan. “It becomes a lot easier when following these simple steps.” “The best tip I can give first of all, is to let it flow naturally. It’s like signing your name on a piece of paper; you can do it perfectly first time, but if you try and repeat it, it won’t be exactly the same. Don’t force it.” Lead with your left: The left hand is the direction hand, and it’s just as important as the right. Practice putting left-hand-only, or have someone hold a club in front of your hands on the target line. Bump the grip with the back of your hand, not your fingers.

Think roll, not hit: The key to distance control is to roll the ball, not hit it. To do

this, take an open stance, your weight slightly favoring your left side and your putter shaft leaning toward the target. The open stance makes it easier to feel the left hand going out and down the target line.

Use your fingers: Grip the putter any way you like, as long as it doesn’t hinder your left hand’s role in the stroke. But make sure to grip the club in your fingers. The shaft should run up the lifeline of your left hand for clubface control, but your fingers must contact the grip. You can drop the right forefinger down the shaft, but don’t steer with it. Forget The Origins about what your palms are doing. Fingers equal feel. Spot the ball: If you stare at the ball too long, it’s easy

of the Caddy

The French word ‘cadet,’ pronouned cad-day, means ‘youngest child.’ This is where the word ‘caddy’ comes from in the game of golf.

to get brain-locked and hit a bad putt. To avoid this, don’t even look at the ball. Try looking at a spot just in front of the ball on your target line and rolling the ball over that spot. Another trick to free your mind is to picture the ball going in on the high side of the hole on a breaking putt. Most golfers miss low. “When you go to take the shot, move the arms like a pendulum swing and keep it in mind that you’re rolling the ball and not hitting it. You should be able to make the perfect shot by following these tips!”

Left: Jordan’s key advice is for your stroke to go naturally, because if you force it, it won’t go in. Make sure you let it roll in, so don’t hit the golf ball with force.
