June is always an exciting month in Lincolnshire, but this year is set to be especially busy. With the county on a high from the newly refurbished Lincoln Castle, plus the Cathedral celebrating the 800th anniversary of its copy of Magna Carta, and of course, the Lincolnshire Show, there’s lots to do.

ROB davis Editor, PridE magazinEs editor@pridemagazines.co.uk

Enjoy a packed programme of events in Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter this month, not least the Three Choirs festival, profiled in this edition - and keep an eye on our What’s On pages to make sure you venture into Lincoln this summer and really make the most of the coming months. This month in Pride, we meet Lincolnshire actress Sheridan Smith to talk about her tough new role, we talk to Strictly Come Dancing’s Camilla Sacre-Dallerup who visits the area this month, to host a motivational dance event. Elsewhere we’ve short breaks close to home, we meet Lincoln’s very own Savile Row tailor and we’ve an open garden near Market Rasen ripe for exploring on a sunny afternoon.

County News Mercedes of Boston’s Macmillan Charity Ride Aftersales staff from Boston’s Mercedes-Benz dealership in £10,000 fundraising bid for charity with 150 mile quadricycle ride...

Macmillan Cancer Support is set to benefit from a £10,000 cycle ride next month. A team from Mercedes-Benz of Boston’s Aftersales Department are planning a large fundraising project on the 11th July in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The charity challenge involves building and riding their homemade four-wheeled quadricycle around the county, from Boston to Lincoln, to Grimsby, then back to Boston, approx 150miles... in just one day! The team includes 14 employees, aged between 1857. So far the team has spent numerous hours building the bike, which has been funded

Tom Cruised into the county for new film... Lincolnshire will be featured on the big screen this year as Tom Cruise filmed his next Mission Impossible film in the county. When the trailer runs, look very carefully and you may catch a glimpse of the county’s beautiful, patchwork landscape as Ethan Hunt, Tom’s character, hangs out of an Airbus A400M over the county. The actor filmed his death defying scenes in Lincolnshire last year. Cruise certainly caused a stir in the county during filming as locals also spotted him in and around Lincoln and Stamford.

only by donations and sponsorship from local companies and customers of the dealership. “The team has a target to raise of £10,000,” says the team’s Katrina Townsley. “At Boston we’ve a great team of people that work together very well.” “The team has already raised over £7,000. They have also arranged some free training at a local gym in Boston – TruGym.” Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer, providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support and pushing for better cancer care. For more information see www.justgiving.com/merc-millan.

Newark is soon to be home to one of the most ambitious apps ever developed in the UK. The mobile phone app will help visitors to the National Civil War Centre discover the dramatic story of the English Civil War across Newark, when the town’s museum opens its doors as Pride goes to press. Costumed scenes are already being filmed in the town using 100 actors and extras. Complementing the new £5.4m Civil War Centre, it is hoped that the new app will be a hi-tech draw for tourists. Visitors who hold up a smart phone or tablet camera to a so-called ‘trigger scene’ will meet historical characters around the town as they come to life on screen. Lincolnshire soldier’s top shot award...

Boston Born chef Jason cooks in the Big Apple...

A teenage soldier from the county has recently won a trophy for being the best shot in his regiment...

Lincolnshire chef Jason Atherton opens restaurant in a hotel named ‘Edition’ in the Flat Iron district of New York City... Lincolnshire chef Jason Atherton has launched his latest venture - a restaurant in New York’s on-trend Flat Iron district. Mablethorpe soldier Pete Jarram, was presented with the Baker Rifle by the Army’s Lieutenant General Sir Gerald Berragan in a passing out parade at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. The 17-year-old was one of 457 young people who took part in the passing out parade where he collected his trophy in front of 3,000 people. Pete will now go on to do his phase two infantry training with the Mercian Regiment. He claims that the experience he’s had has massively boosted his confidence. He said: “I’m really proud and amazed to win such an incredible award, especially as I’m left-handed anyway and had to learn to shoot with my right hand.”

“When I joined up, I also discovered that I was shortsighted in my right eye, so I now have to wear glasses to correct it.” The college’s Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Oz Lane, said the achievement of the soldier was ‘immense.’ “When the junior soldiers parade in front of their grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters or friends, they are demonstrating that they have taken that huge stride from childhood into adulthood, and from civilian into soldier.” The Army Foundation College offers a 42-week course that leads to phase two training in the Infantry, Royal Artillery and Royal Armoured Corps and a 22-week course for juniors.

The Edition is situated directly across from the iconic Madison Square Park. Formerly the Met Life Tower - once the tallest building in New York it’s located in a hotel which combines the historic landmark’s original BeauxArts architecture with rich interior details. The hotel

features 273 rooms, and several bars as well as Jason’s restaurant. Jason is the son of a Skegness hotelier and her joiner husband and at the age of just 16, Atherton ran away to London whilst his parents were on holiday. Jason has worked with many well-known chefs including Pierre Koffmann, Nico Ladenis, and Marco Pierre White. He joined the Gordon Ramsay Group in 2001 as his executive chef for Verre in Dubai. In 2005, Jason returned to the UK and opened the well-known Maze restaurant. Atherton left Gordon Ramsay Holdings in 2010 to launch his own restaurant company, Jason Atherton Ltd, and his flagship restaurant Pollen Street Social in Mayfair, has recently been awarded a Michelin star.

Taboo: This month the Lincolnshire actress prepares to tackle a TV taboo for her latest role in The C Word.

- sHEridan smitH -

This month Lincolnshire actress Sheridan Smith prepares to tackle one of her toughest roles yet, and break a TV taboo by presenting a candid account of one woman’s battle with breast cancer in a groundbreaking primetime BBC1 drama. Sheridan was born and raised just on the border of Lincolnshire in Epworth, on the Isle of Axholme. Born into a musical family, the daughter of a country and western duo, showbiz was, perhaps, in the blood. Instead of music though, Sheridan found a name for herself as an actress in BBC comedy dramas, performing in The Royle Family, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and later in Gavin & Stacey, during which she had a relationship with James Cordon. With over 37 TV credits alone to her name, Sheridan has also appeared in a number of dramatic roles, from Heartbeat to Holby City, to The 7.39 – in which she played an accidental adultress – to the three episode biopic of Cilla Black. With two BAFTAs to her name, two National Television Awards and over 10 other awards for her TV and theatre work though, Sheridan is about to muster all of her acting talent to tackle her most challenging role yet. The C Word is the story of Lisa Lynch, who, at just 33 years of age – the same age as Sheridan herself – suddenly find herself battling a serious illness. “You’re 28 years old and the last thing you’re expecting is to be diagnosed with stage three breast cancer,” says Sheridan. “When you’re 18 months married to a man you’re crazy about. When you’re right in the middle of things. When all you want is for your life to continue just the way it was going, in the order you had planned it.” “Then there it is. That out of the blue, life-altering event that drives home a message that runs counter to everything you’ve been led to believe. You are not, it turns out, in control of everything. One minute your life is normal, the

next, in an instant, that normality is gone.” Due to screen as Pride goes to press, The C Word is based on real life events, an adaptation of Lisa Lynch’s inspiring and candid book about her experience of cancer. The TV adaptation is based on her popular blog, which was launched shortly after her diagnosis in 2008. Adapted by Nicole Taylor it’s described as a defiant but surprisingly funny story of life, love and cancer. In the first confusing, terrifying hours after her diagnosis, while her family are overwhelmed with grief, Lisa finds refuge in her laptop. This is partly as an

irreverent, hilarious voices which can help us to find the energy to cope when it seems impossible.” “The subject matter of The C Word may seem macabre but in fact, it’s a magical love story of a young couple, their families, and life itself.” Nicole Taylor and the BBC worked closely with Lisa on the script and had her full support. She died in 2013, aged 33, and we were keen to find out what Sheridan thought about bearing the burden of covering such a role. What attracted you to the project? Lisa got in touch with me and asked me

A Tough New Role For

SHERIDAN Lincolnshire’s sheridan smith is one of the best-known faces on tV with over 37 tV, 14 film and numerous theatre roles to her name. this month though, she’ll tackle one of tV’s taboos as she portrays blogger Lisa Lynch, who lost her battle with cancer in 2013. Here, she talks about the character and her reaction to playing one of her most emotional roles yet... Words: Rob Davis.

antidote to all the wealth of mis-representation she finds on the internet about cancer being a ‘gift,’ and partly as a way to tell friends and family what’s happening, Lisa begins to write a blog about what she’s going through. “One in three of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our life time - everyone will be touched by it,” says Susan Hogg, Executive Producer, BBC Drama Production. “Sometimes a voice makes itself heard which manages to encapsulate our universal experience. Lisa Lynch is one of those accessible,

to play her. I was on holiday and read the script by the pool. I cried buckets and said immediately I’d be honoured. There was no doubt in my mind when I read it that it was special. I was then lucky enough to become text buddies with Lisa. The fact that she asked me to play her was such a huge honour. Tell us about Lisa and how she changes across the course of the film? Lisa’s journey is unbelievable. She was incredible; I’ve never met anyone so inspiring. Her love of life was infectious and you go on a journey with this young, 9

beautiful girl who’s just got married, she’s the editor of a magazine, everything’s going great and then she gets diagnosed with breast cancer. But she’s such a fighter that she doesn’t let it get her down. She takes to her blog as a release and she’s the wittiest, funniest writer. Her strength all the way through is infectious. She gets her whole family on board and they’re supportive. She doesn’t let it beat her. She was just special and both the book she wrote and the way she wrote it, was inspirational. Nicole has captured that completely in the script. Have you met Lisa’s family? All her family, and Pete, her lovely husband, came to set and that was a special day. They’ve been nothing but supportive so you can see where she got it from because they are just the most wonderful, wonderful people. They’re so proud of her. They wanted to get it made and even though she’s not with us we finally did. What do you hope people will take from it? Cancer touches so many people’s lives, so I think her voice being heard will hopefully get families talking more about it. Her blog is still visited regularly by people and she’s carrying on, she’s helping people even though she’s gone away. We haven’t made it into a morbid programme because she was about celebrating life. I think it will be nice for people to watch and hopefully take Lisa’s sparkle with them. Sheridan had to shave her head for the role and says it came as a great shock. “It did upset me a little bit at the time, but it’s just hair – it’ll grow back,” she said. “The C-Word is about such an amazing woman. Everyone is affected by cancer and I lost my eldest brother to it, so, although of course you feel like you’ve lost a bit of your femininity, I feel it’s the least I could do.” “Actually, shaving my head has been liberating. I know I’ll never do it again, so I can enjoy all the different styles it’ll go through before I’m back to being me.” 10

“I’m so sad that Lisa won’t get to see the finished drama, having been so involved in the development of it.” says Sheridan. “I’m honoured and humbled that she wanted me to play her...” “I’m so sad that Lisa won’t get to see the finished drama, having been so involved in the development of it.” says Sheridan. “I’m honoured and humbled that she wanted me to play her on screen, and I hope that I will make her proud.” Jane McFarlane, Lisa’s Mother, says: “We are so grateful that Lisa’s book The C Word and her blog have been so beautifully adapted by Nicole Taylor and the BBC.” “Lisa was heavily involved with all aspects of the adaptation until her very sad death in March 2013. She would be so thrilled that awareness of breast

cancer in young women will be further raised by this production.” “We all remain incredibly proud of Lisa; her writing inspired so many people and she has left a truly amazing legacy through her book The C Word and this BBC production.” n Sheridan will appear in The C Word as Pride goes to press with transmission dates TBC. It will also be available for 30 days after transmission on The BBC iPlayer. The C Word is an in-house BBC Drama Production directed by Tim Kirkby. The Executive Producer is Susan Hogg and the Producer is Simon Lewis. For more information on Lisa’s life, see www.alrighttit.blogspot.co.uk.

Members of the public can enter their animals into the Dog Show on the day of the event. There’s also the Shire Horse Show - Spilsby is one of a small handful of shows which continues this tradition. Look out for the vintage display of tractors and steam engines and the six mile road race that is held every single year. Fun, Fireworks &

MUSIC it’s the summer to celebrate 200 years of Waterloo! the UK’s most popular picnic concert series stops by in stamford next month to provide a uniquely entertaining event in the area. the concert celebrates a number of important historical milestones in 2015, according to organiser Beth rees...

Classical music, with a wonderful firework finale. Last year over 7,000 people attended the annual Battle Proms Picnic Concert at Burghley House, and this month, tickets are on sale for the 2015 event. The concert is a celebration of summer with live music, Spitfire, cannons, cavalry and fireworks, all set in the grounds of the Elizabethan stately home and four other properties among the UK’s most celebrated stately homes. The Battle Proms takes much of their historical inspiration from the Napoleonic wars, which came to a conclusion 200 years ago at the Battle of Waterloo when Napoleon’s rule as Emperor of the French was ended. Amongst the many Napoleonic elements to the concert, Battle Prommers will enjoy pyrotechnic displays with replica Napoleonic cannon fire and dramatic skill-at-arms displays by the event’s cavalry team. Most beloved of all is the Battle Proms signature piece, Beethoven’s Battle Symphony. Written to celebrate Wellington’s defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Vitoria, it is performed as Beethoven intended, with 193 live cannon providing thunderous percussion!

and 70 years since the end of the Second World War with a number of additions to this year’s programme. These will include The Battle of Britain Evening Gun Salute, honouring this pivotal air campaign and end of the war itself, as our gunners herald the arrival of the Grace Spitfire with a volley of shots from a vintage 13 Pounder field gun. Once again, much loved TV and radio presenter, author and celebrated compère Pam Rhodes will be hosting the concerts and we are delighted to welcome back the Rockabellas, today’s answer to The Andrews

from Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture (which also gets the ‘Battle Proms treatment’ of live cannon fire) to a sing-along finale packed with all the prom favourites such as Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia. Accompanying the orchestra will be the superb soprano Denise Leigh, who will perform enchanting arias before bringing the finale to life - and the crowd to their feet – as the spectacular firework display lights up the summer sky. Widely regarded as the most exciting summer proms concert series in the country, these are events that fans return to year after year, to enjoy a memorable night out with friends or for a significant celebration. With so many key historical milestones to look back on this year, what better way to celebrate in 2015 than with the Battle Proms!

“Most beloved of all is the Battle Proms signature piece, Beethoven’s Battle Symphony, performed with 193 live cannon providing thunderous percussion!”

The Battle Proms team are also planning to celebrate 75 years since the Battle of Britain 20

Sisters, who will warm up the audience with an upbeat performance of unrivalled vintage vocals to keep your toes tapping as you picnic and get you into the party mood. Conducted by Douglas Coombes and performed by the New English Concert Orchestra, the orchestral programme will include soul-stirring classical favourites suited to the grandeur of the historic setting,

n The event takes place at Burghley House on Saturday 4th July. Tickets from £33/adults. See www.battleproms.com or call 01432 355 416. This month presents an unprecedented opportunity to enjoy world-class choral music in Lincoln. As part of the 800th anniversary celebrations of Magna Carta, of which the Cathedral owns one of four remaining copies, a programme of choral music will take place bringing together the three choirs of Lincoln Cathedral, Peterborough Cathedral and Southwell Minster. The Eastern Three Choirs Festival is the brainchild of Patrick Cormack and is being brought to the city by Aric Prentice, Director of Music at Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Minster School where members of the Cathedral’s choir are educated. Aric is in charge of all of the liturgical music across the Cathedral, plus its non-liturgical recitals and concerts. “Music is what brings the Cathedral alive.” says Aric. “It’s a fantastic building and we’re very lucky to have it, its architecture, its generous acoustics and the big space. The sound travels very successfully and our organ is one of the best in the world, so we wanted to create a festival which would exploit what I think are among our best assets.” “The idea of the Three Choirs event was first put forward in 2013, suggested by Lord Cormack, who has been heavily involved with creating a programme for the Magna Carta year.” “We’ve seen the creation of a programme which involves speakers, an exhibition at the House of Lords of each engrossment of Magna Carta, plus a Magna Carta dinner which will take place in June too. As part of the celebrations, he suggested the Three Choirs event; the bringing together of two additional choirs of Peterborough and Southwell to Lincoln.” The event takes place from Thursday 18th June to Sunday 21st June, and comprises 17 events. It’s a feast of predominantly English music performed not just by the choirs themselves, but alongside other classical performers like Tasmin Little and Piers Lane, both incredibly talented and respected in their field.

“One of the great treasures of the Cathedral is its music. One of the reasons people come to the Cathedral is to enjoy big musical events like the Hallé and the Messiah, which we perform each year. People love to hear big pieces performed in the Cathedral, so during the festival we’ve specifically concentrated both on keeping the liturgical programme going, but also performing a large scale repertoire with our two guest choirs.” “Thursday’s concert will feature Dr Tasmin Little and Australian pianist Piers Lane alongside the three choirs. The two musicians will be performing

“The two celebrities are very much a feature of the concert, but the programme will also include pared back performances with little orchestration alongside other events with much grander accompaniment.” “On Saturday we’ve Sinfonia Viva, an East Midlands based 52-piece professional orchestra, who will be coming to us to perform music that each of the three choirs would normally sing accompanied by organ. The festival presents an opportunity to perform that evening with a full orchestra, which will be absolutely stunning with an additional orchestration

Being faithful to our English theme, there’s music by Tippett, quintessential Elgar and Vaughan Williams.” “Tasmin will be playing pieces like The Lark Ascending, for which she’s especially well known. Having performed it at the Proms, it’s become one of her signature pieces. The concert will close with Elgar’s rumbustious Give Unto the Lord, which will create a stirring finalé.”

which will bring the pieces - like Handel’s Zadok The Priest - to life.” “Sinfonia Viva are also performing a couple of pieces themselves - Walton’s Spitfire Prelude and Mozart’s Magic Flute. It will be absolutely magical, really making the most of the Cathedral’s acoustics with some varied music and a big orchestra.” “It really has been a huge undertaking to bring the event to the Cathedral. We began planning it around 18 months ago and the two other Cathedrals were

very keen to ensure it happened. My two colleagues, Paul Hale at Southwell and Steven Grahl at Peterborough, have been very keen to make music in a way that we can’t do individually with the repertoire that we’ve chosen. It’s lovely for both the children and the adults to be able to sing our programme in this way, and to perform with our celebrities. It’ll be very inspiring just to hear Tasmin and Piers to perform. It’s something that our choirs and our audience will take with them forever.”

design of which is plain chant, which we do know is relevant to the 1200s. It’s for organ and choir, with some solo parts.”

“To hear music being performed in such a large scale with the acoustics, the music we’ve chosen and the guests we’re welcoming into the Cathedral will provide a performance that’s absolutely unprecedented.”

“Michael will host his reception during which I’ll interview him, which I’m really looking forward to. He’s only the third composer to be ennobled, two years ago, following Britten in 1976 and Lord Lloyd Webber more recently.”

“We’ve also included in the programme events that are a little unusual; not just in terms of the coup for Lincoln of the celebrities but in the fact that we have both paredback and full orchestrations, and a real diversity of music with real accessibility and the theme of celebrating Magna Carta.”

“The other aspect of the festival which I think will appeal to the audience is the different scales of the events. Michael’s event takes place in the Chapter House, for around 200 guests, but the events in the nave will potentially attract 1,100, so there really is something for everyone, from intimate choral music performances to large scale events and a jazz evening on Friday at Harper Recital Hall. There’s a host of different ticket prices and a season ticket too, so it’s a really diverse programme and a really exciting one too.”

“It’s very medieval in nature with some original chants included in the setting. It has a sparse flavour with passages of unison, exactly as the monks would have been performing in the 1200s. It’s another way in which we’ve tried to tie the festival in with Magna Carta, with a debut performance designed to coincide with the anniversary of the document.”

“To hear music being performed in such a large scale with the acoustics, the music we’ve chosen and the guests we’re welcoming into the Cathedral will provide a performance that’s unprecedented...”

“It’s a big year for the city and a big year for the county, and we’re delighted to celebrate that musically. We’re hoping to play our part in generating a higher level of recognition for the city.” “In terms of creating a programme which reflects the document, we don’t know what music sounded like in 1215 so it was a little tricky. We’ve gone for a predominantly English programme for that reason - although we’ve two pieces of Mozart - but also, we’ve invited Lord Michael Berkeley to come and deliver an exclusive talk on the Friday night of the festival.” 30

“Michael is the presenter of BBC Radio 3’s Private Passions, and The eldest son of composer Sir Lennox Berkeley and a godson of Sir Benjamin Britten. He’ll host a question and answer evening talking about his time on the 20-year old programme, during which he’s interviewed over 1,000 people.” “Michael’s presence will add to the festival in terms of personality, but he has also composed us a piece which will be debuted during the visit of a major royal [the exact identity of whom is subject to embargo] to the Cathedral on 8th June. He has written a piece entitled Magna Carta Te Deum, the

You don’t have to go far to find yourself a world away. that’s the philosophy of Lincolnshire businesswoman Emma mason, formerly Emma tagg of the Hoste arms, Burnham market. Emma and Helen millin established their luxury holiday cottage rental agency just six months ago, and now have a portfolio of 30 properties in beautiful north norfolk. Close to Lincolnshire and yet, somehow, a world away, Emma and Helen invite you to enjoy a break this month... getting away from it all is a luxury we all crave, but with modern airports busier than ever, with luggage restrictions, plus currency, language and cultural differences, taking a holiday often yields more stress than it alleviates. Ideally, you’d be able to get away from it all and enjoy all of the luxury, but without any of the hassle... and that’s exactly the philosophy behind the luxury holiday cottage rental agency, Barefoot Retreats, established by Helen Millin and Emma Mason. The ladies already have 30 luxurious, privately-owned properties in North Norfolk, from rustic or nautical to contemporary properties providing the opportunity to get away from it all, without having to venture too far. All cottages come with Barefoot bathrobes, slippers, luxury linens, fluffy towels and a luxury welcome basket, ensuring you enjoy a boutique hotel experience, whether you’re staying two or 14 nights! 35

Helen and Emma met whilst Emma was working as Managing Director of The Hoste Arms, Burnham Market. Originally from the North Norfolk area, she was well-aware of the area’s tourism potential. Helen used to stay at the venue and began working as a marketing and PR consultant before the two decided to set up Barefoot Retreats to fill what they saw as a gap in the market. “We don’t think people want to travel too far - it’s a hassle - and yet, the idea of blending the look and feel of a boutique hotel with the convenience and privacy of a self-catering retreat seemed the ideal solution for those seeking a relaxing break.” says Emma.

“A bespoke concierge service can provide dog walking, babysitting, or hiring a private chef...”

What makes the business even more unique is Helen and Emma’s provision of a bespoke concierge service, which can provide anything from dog walking to babysitting, to recommending and booking restaurants, to hiring private chefs to cook for you or even booking a helicopter ride over the area’s breathtaking coastline. 36

“From beautiful bolt holes to coastal gems to big houses and rural retreats, we’ve a range of properties from around £450/ week to£4,000/week, some with cinema rooms and other luxurious features.” says Emma.

“We offer weekly breaks, or off-peak short breaks with weekends and midweek dates available, and properties that can accommodate anywhere from two to 14 people.”

The area yields everything from pretty coastlines with birdwatching, moorings for boats and long, tranquil walks, to the beautiful beaches at Holkham and Brancaster to the market town of Holt with its independent shops and specialist food retailers and delis, Wells-next-to-the-Sea and Burnham Market. “We’ve so many options for our visitors to enjoy.” says Emma. “All offer the ultimate in luxury and relaxation whether you’re seeking a weekend away, a short break, or a holiday... and best of all, there’s not a crowded departure lounge in sight!” n over the following pages we’ve picked six of Barefoot’s most luxurious retreats..

PENSION

Changes the most radical pension changes in almost a century were introduced on 6th april 2015. Pension freedom

Most pension investors aged at least 55 now have total freedom over how they take an income or lump sum from their pension. They can choose to: a) Take the whole fund as a cash lump sum – 25% tax free and the rest taxed as income b) Take smaller lump sums as and when they like with 25% of each withdrawal tax free and the rest taxed as income c) Take up to 25% tax free and a regular taxable income from the rest via drawdown or an annuity Any withdrawals in excess of the tax free amount will be taxed as income at your marginal rate. The rules apply to anybody with a defined contribution pension including a personal pension, group personal pension, stakeholder pension, SIPP and some AVC schemes.

death Tax Benefits abolished The other major change is that it was normally only possible to pass a pension on as tax free lump sum if you died before age 75 and you had not taken any tax free cash or income. Otherwise, any lump sum paid from the fund was subject to a 55% tax charge. This tax charge was abolished on 6th April 2015. The tax treatment of any defined contribution pension you pass on which you do not use to purchase a lifetime annuity or scheme pension will depend upon the age when you die.

If you die before age 75, your beneficiaries can usually take the whole pension fund as a tax free lump sum or draw an income from it also free of UK income tax either by choosing to buy an annuity or using drawdown. If you die after age 75 your beneficiaries have three options: a) Take the whole fund as a lump sum. The pension fund will be subject to 45% tax. However, it is proposed that this should be taxed as your beneficiaries income for payments made after 5th April 2016 b) Take a regular income through an annuity or drawdown. The payments will be taxed as your beneficiaries income c) Take periodical lump sums through drawdown. The lump sum payments will be taxed as your beneficiaries income Pensions can therefore now be a very tax efficient way of passing money to your beneficiaries.

Cutting Edge

CUISINE nick reed is head chef at his family-owned sebastopol inn at minting near horncastle. He takes inspiration from, amongst others, the ideas of new nordic cuisine and creates a range of dishes that are delicious and imaginative, serving them up in a comfortable, traditional pub restaurant environment...

Minting’s sebastopol inn provides original, high quality food, but in a traditional Lincolnshire pub restaurant environment. In fact, in our county, you can’t get more traditional than the 16th century ‘mud and stud’ cottage (perhaps one of the oldest in the county) that was turned into a public house in 1836 Its more recent history has been a little patchier, as the Sebastopol Inn suffered under successive owners until the arrival of the Reed family back in May 2011. The family business is completed by Nick’s parents David and Dianne who oversee the front of house. Between them they brought considerable investment to the venue, at that time stripped out and derelict.

Words: Rob Davis.

The oldest part of the building is a cosy dining room, but there’s more dining space in the larger stable conversion to the rear, as well as the comfortable bar area. In total, 45

“Nick explores the local woodlands and introduces ingredients such as ransoms, nettles, bittercress and garlic mustard...”

What really sets Nick apart from other Lincolnshire pub restaurants, though, is his creativity. As well as keeping up to speed with new cooking techniques, his interest in the new Nordic cuisine philosophy which promotes the increased use of seasonal foods and natural products to provide ‘purity, simplicity and freshness’ has encouraged him to explore the local woodlands and introduce ingredients such as ransoms, nettles, bittercress and garlic mustard. Later in the year there’ll be wild plums, hazelnuts and hedgerow apples.

Below: Our starter of watercress soup was served warm, with sour cream and truffle oil, presented in a homemade freshly baked bread roll.

there are around 60 covers and during the warmer months there’s also the option to dine outdoors. Overlooking the church and nestled in one of the area’s prettiest villages on the edge of the Wolds, in good weather there are usually plenty of visitors sat outside - walkers, dogs and horses - all are welcome. Since opening they have slowly been making the food offering more contemporary. The pub restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday and for lunch on Sunday. Refreshingly, lunch or dinner, there’s just a single menu at the Sebastopol, although this changes three or four times a week as Nick adapts the dishes to reflect the availability of ingredients. The menu may be relatively small in comparison to others but fewer choices on the menu usually indicate that a chef is more confident in their ability to construct a menu that will appeal to all discerning diners and it means they spend more time perfecting, as well as individually preparing, a more modest number of options.

The chef also employs a few quirky techniques and incorporates unusual secondary elements to dishes, like the leek ash on the venison loin, the puffed barley and, on the beef neck dish, achilles tendon crisps boiled for two hours, chilled, thinly sliced then dehydrated before being deep fried. The duck and asparagus starter includes slivers of duck ham which, again, Nick dry cures for a week in salt, sugar and spices before cold smoking it and air drying for 21 days. To expend such effort on such relatively minor parts of each dish is impressive; the rillettes of duck are served alongside a wild garlic mayonnaise and a technically perfect soft-boiled duck egg yolk. It’s a complex dish with several elements which has clearly taken lots of time and several different techniques to finesse. Another starter is a watercress soup, with sour cream and truffle oil. This was served in a hollowed out bread roll which, like all bread at the restaurant, is made daily in-house. Main courses include Minting Park Farm beef neck which exploits just one of the local ingredients sourced from suppliers with whom the Sebastopol Inn has excellent

“One of the most unusual desserts we’ve seen for a number of years is the Sebastopol’s primrose panna cotta with its cured rhubarb and edible flower garnish, which was creamy and delicious...” Sleaford’s Peppers Lane Rapeseed Oil and cheeses from nearby Goatwood and Cote Hill dairies. So far 180 different cask ales have been sourced from local breweries. These include East Heckington’s 8 Sail Brewery, Batemans, Grantham’s Oldershaws and Horncastle Ales, among 14 others, all within a 30 mile radius! There’s also a good choice of eight white wines, and eight red wines, a brace of rosé and four sparkling options, with prices starting at a modest £14.95 and topping out around £30 for a quality Chablis or Merlot. working relationship. This unusual cut is cooked sous vide at precisely 57°c for three days and served with smoked potato croquette, tongue and marrow plus spinach, allium and the tendon crisps mentioned above. Desserts are also well-thought out at the restaurant with a mouth-watering take on the classic lemon meringue which is complemented with extraordinary powdered basil. Our personal favourite though is the primrose panna cotta with cured rhubarb and edible primrose flower garnish – again hand-picked by Nick of course! Other local suppliers for the restaurant include Primrose Farm free range eggs in Wragby, Bourne’s Peterborough Game with Sibsey’s NHP providing fruit and vegetables. That’s in addition to Pipers Crisps, 48

David and Nick admit that the restaurant is making an effort to make its food a little more unusual, a little more contemporary, whilst retaining the friendliness of a pub restaurant feel. The family rejects the idea of formality in restaurants and wants to retain a relaxed and friendly environment for everyone. They remain dog-friendly in the bar as their own westie, Snoopy, enjoys the company! Yet, with lots of unusual elements, different methods of cooking, a keenness to provide diners with something a little different, plus the appreciation and respect for local ingredients you should expect from a Lincolnshire pub restaurant, the Sebastopol Inn is deliciously different and a restaurant we’re happy to recommend this summer. It’s the ideal place to find cutting edge cuisine, but with a warm Lincolnshire welcome too!

Lincoln’s Very

HART This summer, uphill Lincoln has plenty to offer visitors from Magna Carta celebrations to Lincoln Castle Revealed. With plenty of reasons to spend time in the city, you’ll also need somewhere to dine, and our recommendation is Bailgate’s White Hart Hotel... Words: Rob Davis. Images: Anna Draper.

It’s an exciting summer for Lincoln with the 800th anniversary celebrations of Magna Carta, the new £20m Lincoln Castle Revealed project and a host of live events taking place in the grounds of Lincoln Castle to mark the two events. On 13th June, Magna Party will bring open air entertainment to the grounds of the Castle, whilst on Sunday 14th June, families will enjoy a special live Horrible Histories performance telling the story of the document. In July, meanwhile, the city’s 1,000 Years of Traditional Crafts event takes place, and there’s a concert featuring Jools Holland plus a Grand Tudor Royal Pageant. Just across Castle Square, The Cathedral, which owns Lincoln’s copy of Magna Carta, has launched a joint ticket initiative enabling visitors to also visit both historic attractions and return throughout the year.

Right: Beef Wellington for two, with a 14oz prime fillet steak wrapped in mushroom duxelle and puff pastry.

54

Consequently, we think many people will be spending a lot of the summer in uphill Lincoln. Fortunately, this month’s Eating Out recommendation is equidistant between the two buildings, and offers a whole host of dining options throughout the summer.

Left: The hotel has a 75 seater restaurant, named Grille, and 50 newly refurbished bedrooms. Below: Smoked duck salad with Parmesan. Bottom: Slow roasted belly pork with sautèed Savoy cabbage.

“We wanted to offer good value food but with plenty of choice.” says Michael. “Being in the middle of the city we have a good mix of people visiting the hotel, so we think it’s important to offer plenty of choice...”

of food to create just daytime and evening menus. Lunchtime service takes place from Monday to Saturday from noon, with seven starters and 10 main courses. The majority of dishes on the daytime menu are also available during early evening service as an ‘early bird’ option, with two or three courses for £9.95 and £11.95 respectively which we think is rather good value. “We wanted to offer good value food but with plenty of choice.” says Michael. “Being in the middle of the city we have a good mix of tourists with plenty of time to enjoy leisurely dining, but also businesspeople who want to make the most of their lunch hour.” Evening service sees a choice of nine starters and 10 main courses, comprising dishes of slightly more complexity. Lincoln’s White Hart Hotel is certainly a grand dame, dating back to 1387 and obtained new owners in 2009. It’s been the subject over a rolling programme of refurbishment ever since, with smart new rooms and function suites - five of those. With 50 bedrooms, it’s a popular place for those visiting Lincoln for business or pleasure to stay, but it’s also ideally situated for those native to Lincolnshire to enjoy anything from afternoon tea to à la carte dining, especially when revisiting uphill Lincoln this summer.

56

Local suppliers feature right across the restaurant’s menus, with Monk’s Road’s Fosters, Grimsby’s Direct Seafoods and a couple of local fruit & veg suppliers all helping to ensure provenance. To finish off, there’s a choice of eight desserts and a wine list comprising 14 whites and 14 reds from around £16 to £45. Afternoon teas are proving one of the hotel’s most popular options, and are available with standard, Pimm’s and champagne afternoon tea variants from £8.50 to £16.25.

The hotel’s 75 seater restaurant is open to both residents and non-residents alike. Its name, Grille, implies steaks and burgers, and whilst there’s adequate provision of these, with four options during evening service, the hotel’s dining goes way beyond that.

During our visit, we were presented with six dishes from the evening à la carte menu, with our smoked duck salad presented with spiced apple chutney, deep fried shallots, Parmesan shavings and mixed leaves. Our second starter, a chicken liver and truffle parfait, was served with plum chutney and toasted focaccia bread.

Head Chef Michael House leads a brigade of 10 chefs and has been with the venue five years. He’s streamlined to hotel’s provision

Our main course options included a slow roasted belly pork option with Savoy cabbage and black pudding mash, and our beef

presentation has been successful enough to secure the hotel a place in Lincolnshire Pride’s Good Food Awards for several successive years. “We’re really delighted to have the reputation that we enjoy in the city.” says General Manager Ian Robinson. “Great dining isn’t just about the food important though it is - but rather the whole experience; the service, the building.”

Presented on a glass plate, decoration of the dish included a caramelised sugar baton, handmade tuille and homemade ice cream.

“We’ve worked hard to maintain the look of the building and to modernise it, whilst retaining the character of one of the best known buildings in Lincoln.”

If you’re more inclined to a fruity dessert during the summer months, we can also recommend a pear and almond tart with raspberry compote and crème chantilly. The restaurant’s approach to using local ingredients and employing imaginative

“At the same time, we’re delivering a dining experience that provides the imagination, presentation and flavours that visitors to Lincoln will welcome this summer, whether they arrive from the Castle, the Cathedral, or from an afternoon shopping on Bailgate!”

Mountsorrel, sparkling Orion £24.95

Rothley wines Royal Richard Rosé £9.95,

New hall vineyard, signature Reserve 2013 £11.95

Cottonworth sparkling Rosé £29.95

hindleap Blanc de Blancs, £28.95

Originating from Leicestershire, this is a lovely sparkling wine made from the 2012 harvest of Mountsorrel’s Orion grapes. There is a delicate pear and lychee flavour, with just a hint of peach, enhanced with a delicate sparkle. Perfect for special occasions and fine dining.

Created in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire by Rotheley wine, and named in honour of King Richard III. Medium dry with a delicate rose colour made from the vineyard’s Solaris, Siegerrebe and Rondo grapes. UK Vineyard Association Bronze Winner.

Ironically, an Essex wine, that’s quietly intense, not overt! Delivering hints of greengage, gooseberry and slight floral notes. The acidity goes into overdrive, ensures purity throughout. There is a real zip to the mineral structure with pure fruit balance; an excellent wine, and so clean.

This English wine, from Andover, Hampshire, is a blend of the three classic varieties: Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. They join forces to produce a magnificent display of red summer fruit aromas beautifully balanced on a subtle backdrop of vanilla. A clean nose with good mouth feel.

From East Sussex, this award winning wine created exclusively from the noble Chardonnay grape. Made from 100% Chardonnay grapes grown in Bluebell Winery’s own vineyards. Aromas of peaches and lemon prevail, with fresh lemon/lime, wild honey and brioche flavours.

ashby hall, a property first built in the 13th century, is a distinguished country home offering no less than 26,900 square feet of living space, arranged over three floors with an additional two floors of accommodation in the stable block. This magnificent Grade II* Listed Hall occupies a spectacular setting on the edge of Ashby De La Launde, an idyllic village where exceptional private lakeside views provide an ideal backdrop. The house has a colourful history and was once a well-known nightclub featuring many famous acts in its cabaret including Diana Dors, Bob Monkhouse and Ken Dodd before being converted back into a private house. “It was originally a Norman manor house and wooden structure, built by the Lincolnshire’s Willoughby de Eresby around 66

1200AD,” says Eran Bauer. “It was developed into a Jacobean home with small mullioned windows and slate roof. In 1595, a Tudor extension created the south wing and later on, a Georgian renovation employed new stone cladding. The early Victorian additions were the north wing with kitchens and staff accommodation.”

Above: The property features oak panelling throughout and has, in total, no fewer than 15 reception rooms and eight bedrooms.

The Hall has had a colourful history, serving as a private house, girls’ school, nightclub, casino and country club. It’s now the home and office for Eran and his company, which provides military defensive equipment. A huge oak door gives way to wood-panelled corridors, and lead to a Georgian ballroom with decorative plaster ceiling and two large Georgian bay windows overlooking the lake and lawns. There’s a stage, two bars, and an oak room too, testimony to the building’s previous use.

Further into the property, there are no fewer than 15 reception rooms including a home cinema and billiard/snooker room. Most of the ground floor is oak-panelled and the whole house is fully enabled with special high speed wi-fi - it was the first house in the UK to be so equipped, as it was the testing site for the technology.

There’s a master bedroom with incredible views over the lake and lawns, dressing room with full height wardrobes, and there are two further bedrooms on the first floor. The second floor includes a further three bedrooms with one featuring a door to access

Offering ample space for commercial accommodation, there’s a spacious stable block, with clock and bell tower, which also incorporates unconverted stables with five stalls and five loose boxes with plenty of space for tack.

As well as mature grounds and lawned areas, there is a lake deep enough for small boats. This is well stocked with carp, pike and other sports fish, whilst two islands grant access to the lake. “Ashby Hall really is a unique property, one that offers compelling options for its next owners!” says Eran.

Create your home with a fresh new lineup of brands at interior design studio Aitch Interiors. Heather Hocking’s studio, in the former stables of Wellingore Hall, just ten minutes from Lincoln, is now the exclusive home in the county to luxurious fabrics by Liberty, as well as St Jude’s designer fabrics and wallcoverings, plus new collections from Clarke & Clarke, Nina Campbell, Sanderson and O&L. “We offer everything from inspiration and materials for your own projects to interior design help, creating anything from a single window treatment to complete rooms or entire homes.” says Heather. “One of the aspects of interior design we specialise in is the creation of made-tomeasure chairs for our clients.” “Hand-made by craftsmen at Long Eaton in Nottinghamshire, the home to British brands like Tetrad and Duresta, we can create chairs to a customer’s exact specifications with bespoke sizes and designs, then help clients to choose fillings and fabrics to create madeto-measure chairs from £400 to over £1,000.”

In addition, Heather also stocks specialists paints, from the chalk-based Autentico to casein-based Miss Mustard Seed, suitable for painting and adding ‘upcycling’ effects to any piece of furniture. Regular courses, from paint effects to lampshade making, enables customers to develop their own interior design skills and express their own creativity. With fabrics, wall coverings, cushions, mirrors, lighting and other finishing touches, plus specialist paint from names like Mylands and Earthborn (breathable paint) you’ll find all you need to create a room with the skills, inspiration and tools that a professional interior designer uses. “Having a house you love, decorated and styled the way you want creates a haven. Somewhere you want to be.” “As an interior designer I’ve always thought it important to be a guide, working with a client collaboratively, and helping them to create their own home, rather than just providing a room for them.” “Any home can look good, regardless of its size or the budget you’re working to, with good advice from a professional and the right products.”

Designed for Life With over 55 years of experience and thousands of satisfied customers, swineshead-based Colin Luesby interiors is one of Lincolnshire’s most established kitchen specialists, but their ranges are right up to date. Paul trevor reveals how to create a room designed to suit your lifestyle... The family kitchen isn’t just an important room in your home, it’s also one of the most personal. Creating a kitchen that’s fit for purpose, attractive and well-designed enough to ensure you work well in it, year after year, is a challenge, but a challenge on which Lincolnshire’s Paul Trevor thrives.

With over 55 years of provenance, it was previously under the direction of Paul’s father and his father’s business partner, but seven years ago, Paul himself took the helm and has been creating kitchens for customers ever since which are both functional, but attractive too.

During our visit, Paul was finessing the design for a kitchen for a return customer, one who commissioned Colin Luesby Interiors in Swineshead to create a kitchen in 40 years ago, then again 16 years ago and now, for a third time in 2015.

Paul creates kitchens from £5,000-£30,000, with designer Leicestershire cabinetry, made-tomeasure specifically for each of Paul’s kitchens. Paul installs Franke sinks, appliances by Miele, Bosch and Siemens, plus Silestone & Corian surfaces, with full project management and the coordination of Paul’s own trusted team of electrical, plumbing, building and gas specialists.

“Customer satisfaction really matters when you’ve over 55 years worth of reputation to maintain...” 80

“Customer satisfaction really matters when you’ve over 55 years worth of excellent reputation to maintain.” he says. “That’s why every one of our kitchens is crafted with the attention to detail, eye for quality and service that our customers expect.”

Top/Left: Hand-painted in any colour you choose, Regent is shown here in Stepping Stone and Lace White. It features modern curved doors, and an on-trend in-frame design. Above: Horizon is a matt-finished slab-styled kitchen shown here in gray and carbon for a modern, clean look. For a shock of colour, Airo, shown here in lime green, offers a really contemporary look. It’s also available in 22 other colours with or without visible wood grain. Woodsman provides a traditional look that’s ideal for period properties. With a knotty oak and a beautiful grain, it’s a timeless design that won’t date. Each one of Paul’s installations are designed with made-tomeasure cabinetry, surfaces in Silestone, Corian and granite, and accessories from names like Franke.

Design inspiration for your

Garden

Lincoln’s Ed Fuller specialises in creative garden design, making spaces which function well, look great and are easy to maintain. Here are his garden design tips... Images: Andrew Wheeler, www.awphotographic.org.uk.

Now that the weather is better and we are heading into summer everyone is starting to turn their attention to the forgotten part of the house over winter; the garden. Ed Fuller and his team from Fullers Landscaping have designed and constructed over 50 gardens in the local area and this has enabled them to develop a number of skills and a mass of knowledge that could be used in your garden. “A good garden design can make a big difference - this doesn’t have to be a complicated detailed drawing, but planning will help with your budget, ensure the garden complements your property and that you achieve the desired outcome,” says Ed. There are principals to follow when designing your garden, with key points including: n Lines: Each type of line, whether it be straight, curved, vertical or horizontal, creates a different effect. Strong lines can draw the eye and add direction in your garden. n Light: Light and shade can change the colours in your garden. This can be created either naturally or artificially. Also by adding lights to your garden means you can use it after dark and enjoy this space for longer. n Texture: This is both tactile and visual. It also doesn’t just relate to plants but also to hard landscaping. The materials used need to be planned so they complement each other and work well with the overall garden and plants. n Form: Without form a garden can become lost and confusing. n Scale: When you put plants in a garden you need to be aware of how big they can 86

1 - Lincs Pride JUNE 155_Layout 2 05/05/2015 13:40 Page 87

eventually grow to. You don’t want to put a tree in a small area that is going to grow to a massive size. “Whatever the plot, I want to ensure my clients end up with a space they want and need,” Ed explained. “We like to come up with unique ideas that can provide our clients with a bespoke garden to enjoy for many years.” Another mistake that is common is getting the wrong person to do the work. If you feel that the work is beyond your capabilities you need to ensure that you employ the right person. Builders are skilled craftsman but the work required for landscaping is completely different to that of house building. Would you get a landscaper to build your extension?

Landscapers have skills in brick laying, laying paving, creating water features, preparing soil for planting and dealing with all types of soil conditions, installing irrigation systems, planting the right trees and plants in the right place, building pergolas, constructing outside structures such as summer houses or sheds - and this list is not exhaustive.

“Whatever the plot, I want to ensure my clients end up with a space they want and need...”

“Landscapers understand things such as creating foundations for the hard landscaping but to do them in such a way that enables planting to take place.”

“Your garden will look worse before it looks better, this is because we usually need to strip it back to a blank canvas before we can start working our magic!”

“We like to help people use their space more wisely, and this can be through innovative and inventive designs, or by making some small change that can made a big impact,” says Ed. “I am also very proud of the team that we have as they all bring skills and qualities to each job and without them we would not be able to provide the high specification gardens that we do.”

Find Out More: As well as providing bespoke garden design and landscaping services Fullers also offers tree surgery services and all types of planting from bare root hedges to specimen shrubs. A Garden Lost in

TIME

This month, we look at an ngs garden with a history reaching back to the 18th century. From a derelict and overgrown plot to being a true gardener’s dream, The Walled garden has been restored to its full oral beauty. This month we meet Jenny and David Eckford from Panton near Market rasen... Words: Tilly Wilkinson.

The Walled Garden in Panton is a truly idyllic place. This month, it’s beginning to fill with bright, vibrant rainbows of colour, according to the owners Jenny and David Eckford, the current owners of the garden. The Walled Garden obtained it’s name due to its enclosure when it was moved away from Panton Hall back in 1775. It was built on a sloping site so it’s south-facing and the walls around it are around ten to twelve feet tall depending on whereabouts in the garden you are. In 1720 the original garden at Panton Hall was situated next to the hall and had no brick walls. In 1775 the architect John Carr of York made extensions to the Hall for the owners, the Turnor family. The Walled Garden was then built from locally made bricks further away from the Hall as this had become the fashion. It was likely that the Turnor family would not wish to have the noise and smell of manure used in the garden so close to the house. The house and kitchen garden were sold off in 1917 to a Franciscan order who founded a college - a photograph of which the current owners possess - and the garden was used for growing fruit and vegetables. Unfortunately, Panton Hall was knocked down in 1960 but its small kitchen garden, lived on. With the garden being just under two acres, David and Jenny Eckford saw the perfect opportunity to rescue such a great space from complete dereliction and it’s a good job they did. Before they owned the garden, it was in a terrible state having been used for various purposes. It was full of sycamore trees which, to any gardener, is a nightmare given that they are basically very large weeds.

hedges and new trees. A deep well was already in the garden with an oak tree beside it, a croquet lawn, a gate and path to an orchard and woodland. The couple created an authentic period garden full of flowers from across the globe. We spoke to Jenny, to find out more about what they’ve planted to remain faithful to its age. “We introduced a lot of flowers and trees that would entice insects, especially butterflies and bees, as we felt that this would bring the garden to life and enhance its atmosphere in the summer,” explained Jenny. “You’ll find an array of plants in June at the Walled Garden as this is the month when the garden is at its best.” “There are a lot of foxgloves, knautia macadonica - and some cersis trees which have bunches of bright pink flowers on the branches before the leaves appear. All of these flowers help to attract the bees and the butterflies to the garden.” “Other flowers you’ll expect to find are anemone, climbing roses, chaerophyllum, orlaya, dictamnus, mecanopsis and a rich, fragrant display of clematis.” “There are a great many unusual trees that we introduced to the garden, such as paulownia trees, which huge leaves and should have small purple flowers throughout June visible from the roof terrace.” “You’ll also find cercidiphyllum trees, which have very round leaves. In autumn, when they fall, the leaves have a very fragrant smell of burnt sugar. Visitors will also find catalpa trees, which are Indian bean trees that produce white flowers in the walled garden as well.”

It was a big job for Jenny and David to remove the trees but an even bigger job for them to remove all of the ivy from the walls. The problem with this, fundamentally, is that when ivy gets under the coping stones on the top of the wall, they lift, water falls into them and they suffer greatly from erosion. To save the walls, the couple had to remove all of the ivy from each and every one.

“Throughout the year, the garden changes quite dramatically. From January to March, snowdrops and aconites cover the ground in the woods outside the walls. Then, from April to June we start seeing the late spring flowers appear, and this is when the garden comes to life; it becomes really atmospheric, especially with the variety of nature in the garden but it’s also idyllic, with a vast array of colours dotted around different parts of the garden.”

Jenny and David didn’t just get rid of the sycamore trees and all the ivy from the walls, they also made new paths, put in lawns,

“In the summer, blue aconites start to appear in the woods, which yield poisonous but very beautiful, small blue flowers. In

autumn, too, the colours are absolutely brilliant with a lot of browns and reds starting to emerge.” Due to the abundance of flowers in the garden specifically placed to attract such insects in June, you’re sure to find a lot of bees. There’s an ornamental beehive which pays homage to the species. The garden was never really meant to be ornamental - it was, after all, intended to be productive - but the walls surrounding the garden not only ensure it’s free of vegetable-munching rabbits, but also serve to protect it from the wind. The couple have also recently taken on four new rescue hedgehogs. The garden is now a safe haven for them and, along the same eco-friendly line, they should help to keep the slug and snail population down. Jenny and David created the garden but were keen that its walls shouldn’t serve as a barrier for others to enjoy it. That’s why, for the past three years, they’ve made the garden available to visitors under the NGS scheme. “We like watching people appreciating the garden that we’ve worked so hard to restore,” says Jenny. “We provide an excellent homemade tea tent and we like to propagate plants in the garden to sell them for charity. We also do this to allow other people to have the same passion about growing in their own gardens back at home.”

“We like watching people as they appreciate a garden which we’ve worked so hard to restore...” says Jenny.

“It’s wonderful to be able to contribute to charities in need and to be able to share tips and techniques about gardening with keen gardeners. It’s a brilliant idea and I hope to be able to host the open days for many more years to come.”

This month’s couple, Erin and Alasdair, prove that love refuses to be limited by geography. Alasdair comes from North Queensferry, near Edinburgh, whilst Erin arrived in Lincolnshire from Bournemouth. There was no better place for them to marry than halfway between the two in the grandeur of Stoke Rochford Hall near Grantham. Erin is an Event Manager whilst Alasdair works for British Triathlon. Alasdair went to Loughborough University and remained there afterwards. Erin’s brother, meanwhile, lived with Alasdair ten years ago, allowing him to catch a first glimpse of his beautiful bride-to-be. They officially met at her brother’s wedding and then again at her 102

nephew and niece’s first birthday party, and have been together ever since. “Alasdair proposed almost a year to the day of us getting together,” says Erin. “We had a trip planned to the Lake District for some hill walking and Alasdair took some advice from my dad and led us on a hike up a mountain called Blencathra. He proposed at the very top, even though you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face due to extremely low cloud and fog... although this also meant I couldn’t see the sheer drop right next to us. I’m afraid of heights so this wasn’t so much of an issue for me!” “The first thing we wanted to organise was the venue. We then focused on all of the large

elements fairly early on and the details much nearer to the day. Time was quite scarce for us and we didn’t want wedding organising to take over or become stressful.” When Erin went dress shopping with her mum, she had no idea of the sort of gown she wanted. They went to a fairly large, well established shop in Poole called Pascalis and she tried on five or six different styles. Erin settled on the first dress she tried on, saying that she knew it was ‘the one.’ “We went to a wedding fair at Stoke Rochford Hall where we met Harvey & Harvey, our photographers,” says Erin. “We had a chat with them and really clicked as they are a lovely couple... we warmed to them instantly.” All that remained was for Erin to walk down the aisle and say her vows. The bride says

that she didn’t notice anyone else in the room but remembered her dad looking proud. In the evening the couple had a ceilidh band who came down from Scotland. They were “brilliant” and had everyone up dancing. Both Alasdair and Erin spent the whole night dancing with each other, with parents and with friends. “The best thing was seeing all of our family and friends with smiles on their faces,” says Erin. “For the honeymoon, we went to Peru and walked the Inca Trail, then went into the Amazon for a few days, and stopped off in Miami on the way home. The honeymoon was amazing, and we were really pleased we went immediately after the wedding.” “Both Alasdair and I are so grateful to both our families for all their contributions and for helping us to plan the wedding we wanted!”

No suit will ever look as good as one which has been hand-cut by an experienced Savile Row tailor. In a market place of High Street suiting - with suits churned out in overseas factories - and a world where sewing a designer name into a mediocre suit will double or triple the price, the difference between an off-the-peg suit and one cut by a local independent tailor, like Lincoln’s Andrew Musson, has never been greater. Andrew arrived back in Lincoln in 2008 but his provenance as a tailor goes back to the 1980s. For 25 years, he also worked on London’s Savile Row, cutting for movie and TV personalities, politicians and other well-heeled customers. That means the men of Lincolnshire can now take advantage of world-class tailoring right on their doorstep, with prices roughly two thirds of what you’ll pay in London, despite Andrew’s Savile Row provenance. “Even I’m still pleasantly surprised by the variety of customers that pass through our doors,” says Andrew. “From professional men who work as GPs, consultants and barristers to local dignitaries and politicians to farmers.” During our visit, Lincoln artist Edward Waite visited Andrew for his final fitting. The six foot seven tall artist says he’s

The men of Lincolnshire can now take advantage of world-class tailoring right on their doorstep, with prices roughly two thirds of what you’ll pay in London, despite Andrew’s Savile Row provenance... ‘delighted’ with the fit and quality of his suit. Edward is well known in the city, using chef ’s bottles to create cityscapes of places like Lincoln, London and New York, using continuous trails of acrylic paint, drizzled onto canvas. Edward says he struggles to find off-the-peg suiting to fit, and with a number of preview evenings coming up, at galleries where his work is on display, plus a forthcoming wedding to his fiancée, he wanted a suit which fitted beautifully. The artist even created bespoke artwork for the lining which Andrew has screen printed onto a special grade of silk, with matching handkerchiefs created of the artwork too.

109

1 - Lincs Pride JUNE 155_Layout 2 05/05/2015 13:41 Page 110

In addition to the benefit of achieving a suit which fits infinitely better, Andrew’s customers love being able to choose the weight, colour and grade of their material, from English suppliers like Holland & Sherry and Huddersfield’s Dugdale Bros, right up to very high-end ultrafine wool cloth suppliers like Scabal.

Andrew’s shop is based on Lincoln’s High Street which was previously owned by his father John Musson. John still works alongside the business but it’s now very much Andrew at the helm. The shop has a range of off-the-peg suiting, and Andrew can alter these or other existing suits owned by customers. He can also create made-to-measure shirts for customers and can create made-to-measure suits, laser-cut off the premises from just £800. For the authentic Savile Row tailoring experience though, a two or three piece bespoke suit costs from £1,295 or £1,695. Around 50 man-hours go into Andrew’s bespoke range, and the tailor has around 2,000 cloths to choose from. Top: Andrew uses chalk to mark out each suit over the course of two or three fittings. Above: The tailor spend over 25 years on Mayfair’s Savile Row and now operates from Lincoln. Opposite: Artist Edward Waite incorporated one of his own cityscapes into his lining.

110

“It makes sense on a practical level to opt for bespoke tailoring.” says Andrew. “Body shapes vary enormously, and the way a suit looks is also dependent on an individual’s posture. Bespoke tailoring ensures any body shape can be accommodated; you’ll never find an off-the-peg suit which fits as well as a bespoke suit.”

Customers can also choose the placement and design of pockets, design their waistcoat, stitching and other details. Above all though, the pleasure and luxury of bespoke tailoring is in the quality and the feel of the finished product. Even if you lack Andrew’s insight, you can still tell his tailoring looks and feels superior to even high-end off-the-peg suiting. The tailor began his life working in Lincoln before moving to Savile Row. It was in the 1980s, which meant an explosion of wealth, especially in Mayfair where Savile Row is located. Andrew cut around 200 suits each year for an affluent client base, charging over £3,500, and becoming progressively more in demand as his ability to ‘pink a job’ - just one example of Savile Row-derived dialect, meaning to cut a job with great care - became well-known. It’s inconceivable to us that many men are willing to spend up to £1,000 - more than the cost of one of Andrew’s made-to-

measure suits, for what is simply an off-thepeg suit, made overseas with a designer label sewn into the lining, with a poor fit and no provenance. Instead, customers are professionally measured before Andrew cuts the cloth according to his three decades of experience, tracing the outline of the various elements; the back, centre back, forepart, side body, top-sleeve, under-sleeve lapel, top collar, flaps and jetting with each element produced ‘on the double’ - i.e: for each side.

Next, the tailor sews the suit together roughly for a first fitting about a month later. Each suit comprises horsehair canvas, felt to the chest and over three and a half metres of quality English 100% wool cloth, as well as silk or heavy satin lining. Andrew’s customers are fitted at least twice, sometime three times, with final adjustments made before the client returns to collect their final, perfect looking and fitting suit.

to be much heavier, but they’re technically better now. Black has fallen out of fashion, as it’s considered a little dour, but every man should have a well-cut navy coloured suit.

“Most of the suits we produce use fabric of around 12oz,” says Andrew. “Fabrics used

“We also provide suits for weddings, with classic lounge suits more popular these days than Edwardian frock coats or morning coats.”

“Most of the suits we produce use fabric of around 12oz,” says Andrew. “Fabrics used to be much heavier, but they’re technically better now...” Left: Edward’s finished suit included a suit jacket lining and waistcoat incorporating one of his cityscapes. Below: Andrew used to cut around 200 suits each year on Savile Row, but with more modest overheads in Lincoln, he can provide the same quality of tailoring talent at around two thirds of the cost of his old Mayfair premises.

“These are considered less formal, more flexible. Alternatively, a grey suit is the next most popular colour. Tweed sports jackets are also popular at the moment, especially with bright highlights like a pink accent pinstripe.”

Suiting for men has never been more readily available, but its quality has never been poorer. During his time as a tailor, Andrew has seen the Palladian faced Savile Row enjoy its reputation, which continued into the profligate 1980s witnessing it diminish from around 100 tailors on the street to just a handful nowadays. Even as a provincial tailor, Andrew’s nearest competitor, in Leicester, has recently ceased trading. That makes Andrew’s talent unique between here and London, making him increasing precious and increasingly in demand. In an age when mediocre multinational suiting has proliferated, it’s nice that something demonstratively better is available. Andrew’s tailoring is clearly better in terms of fit, in the quality of the material and in the service that Andrew and his father, John, both offer. “We’ve a good mix of business with lots of return clients, but we especially enjoy giving new customers their first experience of bespoke tailoring. A client’s reaction to seeing and feeling the first hand-cut suit is always a pleasure to see.” n Andrew Musson is based at Number 39, High Street, Lincoln. The tailor, formerly of Savile Row, provides bespoke tailoring, made-tomeasure suits and shirts, evening wear, wedding suits and accessories like ties and cufflinks. The shop is open from Monday to Saturday (excl Wednesdays), and Andrew hosts a visiting tailor service at The George of Stamford on selected dates too. work and play outdoors, from shooting to farming, dog walking to mucking out the horses. These days, country brands have made the transition into mainstream fashion and summer clothing, rather than being the preserve of farmers on cold winter days. Our featured brands have travelled well from the countryside into the city as this month’s selection of country clobber proves...

Pandora Opens in Boston

New concept store for the luxury brand... Designer jewellery brand Pandora officially opened its Boston shop last month; its second such store in the county. Though the shop began trading back in December, the official opening was a chance to reflect on its initial success, with up to 300 customers a week currently visiting it. Boston Mayoress Councillor Alison Austin visited the store, whilst customers enjoyed a glass of champagne and the chance to view the brand’s latest jewellery. Those spending over £75 in the store could open a draw on Pandora’s Unforgettable Moments tower, winning anything up to a star prize worth £275, whilst customers were also invited to tell the story of their ‘Favourite Pandora moment’ and were entered into an additional prize draw to win a bracelet worth £99. Pandora is now open on Strait Bargate, Boston PE21 6LR. Call 01205 364587 or see www.pandora.net.

Keep Dancing: The star of TV’s Strictly Come Dancing, Camilla SacreDallerup, talks exclusively to Pride this month, inviting ladies to enjoy a VIP day of dancing at Newark’s Eden Hall.

She’s the dancer who found fame on TV dance competition Strictly. Yet, Camilla Sacre-Dallerup is coming to the area this month with even greater ambitions; to inspire and motivate a Newark and Lincolnshire audience, and to encourage busy, professional women to relax and make the most of their lives through motivational thought and ideas. Camilla completed her first book, Strictly Inspirational, in January, and is hosting an event at the area’s Eden Hall Day Spa, which will serve as part Strictly-inspired dance workshop, part motivational workshop, and will also serve as an opportunity to enjoy a day relaxing at the spa, meeting Camilla and enjoying a Q&A session and lunch. “I was born and raised in Aalborg, mainland Denmark, and moved to Copenhagen to dance professionally, then to London when I was 21. Dancing has been part of my life since I could walk.” “The book is half-biography and half self-help, because now I run a life-coaching business specialising in hypnosis and NLP... I’ve done so for about five years now.” “My book is very much about my life but it’s also about what I’ve learned, the tools I’ve developed from the experiences in my life - the good and bad things. It’s a book that I hope people can read and relate to their own life, giving the entertainment of a biography for those who love Strictly, but also providing the chance to take some purpose away, I wrote it, fundamentally, because I wanted to inspire other people.” “It’s about dreaming, but dreaming to succeed, which is the purpose of my talks when I have motivational speaking engagements. Writing it is something I’ve always wanted to do.” “My mum used to take me to my dance classes, for two reasons; firstly it’s a fabulous sport, but also it’s she thought it was a great way to interact with other children. She was right, and it’s still true to today, still true for adults. There’s a great social aspect to the dancing, it’s a lovely way to meet people.”

“I don’t know why but from being a child I loved to perform on stage, I love being in front of an audience.” “At six years old I was begging my dance teacher to let me enter competitions. I had special dispensation to compete, eight being the minimum age!” “I don’t even like competing... that’s the funny thing. I just like to perform, and that was always the main thing, the real motivation for me, and the only way to do that was to dance competitively.” “If I was making the finals I was spending more time on the floor so essentially it helped to me be on the

became an estate agent! I told everyone I was done, that I was never going back. I wasn’t sure I was still passionate about it so I walked away. Doing so is exactly what made me realise how much I loved dancing, and I returned to the floor with renewed passion.” “It was one of the reasons I wanted to write the book. It was one decision which would have such an impact. Since then, I’ve been part of an incredible show, Strictly, and have travelled the world meeting so many people.” “It might never have happened because I walked away but equally, perhaps

This month, you can ‘keeeep dancing’ with a day of dance, life coaching, relaxation and celebrity company courtesy of strictly Come dancing star Camilla Sacre-Dallerup. floor, the thing I love best... but competition was always secondary to me.” “I moved to Copenhagen to dance when my partner and I were youth champions. We travelled all over the world, but especially to the UK where all the main competitions tended to be based. The UK had the big dance competitions and the best teachers.” “I did have a few years where I gave up, became disheartened. I returned to college and took up business studies, I completely left dancing behind and

it happened because I walked away. One little decision can make such a difference. That’s the point.” Camilla is best known for her role on Strictly, but just before she made her TV debut, the dancer and her partner Brendan were one of the top ten dancers in the world, initially competing for New Zealand before returning to the UK. The Strictly fame kicked in around series three, though Camilla and Brendan had both been a part of the series from the very beginning. She remained with the programme until 129

series six when she won the competition with former Holby City actor Tom Chambers. “It was a new programme, a new format but series three was when we though ‘wow, this is really here to stay now; this is it.’” “It’s just takes over your life for the amount of time it’s on. There’s so much excitement in the air, so much you want to do. When you have a celebrity who hasn’t danced before you need to teach them as much as you can before each week.” “You train as much as everyone’s schedules allow. They don’t know what they’re letting themselves in for. The exhausting physical toll on their body. Even seasoned sports people admit that dancing is hard work. It takes over your schedule and you’ll train for six or seven hours at a time.” Camilla and her fellow competitors train for around 340 hours during the show, burning 255 calories per hour, 3,900 per week.

“I needed the time and space to finish my book and test out the tools that I was promoting.” Two of the tools that Camilla is most keen to utilise as a life coach are hypnosis and NLP - neurolinguistic

“We all work very hard these days, there are lots of pressures, deadlines, a lot of overload of information.” “To find what makes you happy within, is important. I can address those issues, but my clients could also have issues with something simple like feeling comfortable in front of an audience.” “In terms of advice, for someone who’s stressed out and having issues with their work-life balance, for example, or lacking ‘me’ time or family time, it could be an issue of setting boundaries. It could be that you’re answering emails 24/7, still too available on a mobile phone.” “We need to be more disciplined now. I know couples who literally set boundaries, like ‘it’s 9 o’clock now, we’re turning our phones off.’” “Learning to say ‘no’ is really important too. We’re so busy being so polite and accommodating what people ask of us, saying ‘yes’ all the time.”

“The show goes out on the Saturday, and in theory Sunday is a day of rest but I’d never take the Sunday off... that was the day that I could plan for the week...”

“The show goes out on the Saturday, and in theory Sunday is a day of rest but I’d never take the Sunday off... that was the day that I could plan for the week.” “I’d meet with my professional partner and come up with a few ideas, put the music on and create a routine for the next week. It was only after you finish the show that you’d be told what was you’d be doing next week.” “Right from the beginning we’d teach the celebrities basic dances; the fundamental steps that we can build on - jives, quicksteps - generic training.” “It was an amazing, truly phenomenal experience but, as I discuss in the book, there were times that I really felt it was 130

running away. The pressure, schedules and hype. There were other things I wanted to do, like helping other people. Whatever I’ve done from dancing to life coaching there was always that element in my job, and I really wanted to make a career from that. I wanted to finish my book - I’d been writing it for three years, and having done six series, winning the last one, I felt ‘what more can I give?’ I felt empty on a creative level too. When I signed up I expected it to be a one-off. I was curious to trial things, but I didn’t realise it would take me away for so long for the other things I wanted to do; theatre for example.”

programming. It’s part of a remit of life coaching methods that she advocates for her clients, as she splits her time between London and Los Angeles. Her tools are ideal for those with busy lives, especially women who are juggling careers with family life and a range of other responsibilities. “Sometimes I work with businesses, sometimes with individuals. If there are any issues - traumatic elements, I can help them to deal with that, but also, I work with successful people whose professional lives are so demanding that other elements of their lives are suffering. They have issues with exactly what I was having problems with; maintaining a work-life balance.”

“It’s OK to say ‘no’ if it means you look after yourself. Peoplepleasing is not always helpful to yourself. NLP is especially good for tackling negative thought patterns.” If we’re constantly saying ‘I can’t do that,’ or ‘that won’t work;’ you’re right. It’s the old adage that whether you think you can succeed, or you think you can’t succeed, you’re correct either way.” “A life coach can help you to address negativity, to make a plan and make things happen, as well as tackling imbalances in your life. A lot of my goals - like writing my book - wouldn’t have happened unless I’d taken action.” “Because I was touring with Strictly Live, the book has come out without a tour to promote it. I will be doing some

speaking but for now there’s no book tour as such.” “I try to ration my time to ensure that the time I do spend with people is quality time - like the day at Eden Hall.” “It’s going to be a fun day, with lots of interaction. We’ll do some dancing, I’ll show them some of the moves from Strictly, and it doesn’t matter if people have danced before or not, because it’ll be really inclusive, that’s the whole point of dancing.” “It’ll be great if some people come along who have never danced before. We’ll have a Q&A for asking about my life, on Strictly; behind the scenes stuff. There will also be motivational workshops focusing on goal setting, making your dreams happen.” “It’s not just a celebrity appearance for a talk, it’s a whole day, lots of interaction, I hope I’ll have time to take advantage of the spa though. I’ve been there a number of times. When I was touring I popped up to see them all and spent a bit of time there. It’s a fantastic place; your shoulders just drop and you feel yourself relaxing... everyone should have a little bit of that in their lives, hopefully that’s what we’ll provide this month!” Camilla’s book, Strictly Inspirational, published by Watkins, is available in bookshops now. Hardback, 225 pages, £14.99.

INVESTING IN

Your Smile

grantham’s dental Health Centre can enhance your smile with a range of procedures that will give you confidence all through the summer months. We speak to Treatment Coordinator gemma Watson to discover why modern dentistry is quick, sophisticated and virtually pain-free...

The difference in confidence that healthy, straight, white looking teeth can provide is extremely powerful. Nobody knows how quick, sophisticated and virtually pain-free modern dental procedures are more than Gemma Watson. Gemma is Treatment Coordinator at The Dental Health Centre on Grantham’s Avenue Road. It’s a modern, comfortable practice with four surgeries, two full time dentists, two hygienists and the latest state-of-the-art facilities. “We established the business in 1995, and have always been at the leading edge of dental techniques.” says Gemma. “From our vibrajet pain-free injections, to our Cerec machine, which takes a 3D picture of your mouth and automatically fabricates crowns and implants to the perfect size, we’ve the technology and know-how to provide the best cosmetic dentistry, helping you to improve your appearance as quickly as possible.” Gemma’s role sees her advising on the best courses of treatments for those seeking to improve the look of their teeth and their confidence, explaining everything from professional teeth whitening, to crowns, veneers and implants to customers, in order to provide the highest standards of patient liaison.

The practice is owned by Colin Sutton, a dentist with 25 years of experience. Crooked or misaligned teeth can be corrected with invisible braces, missing or misshapen teeth can be replaced with implants and veneers, and discoloured teeth can be given a whitening treatment to ensure a new lease of life to provide confidence and an improved smile in time for summer.

Top: To celebrate National Smile Month, the practice is launching a prize draw to win a £200 hamper of dental goodies. Above: The Dental Health Centre’s Cerec machine scans patients’ mouths and creates crowns on site, while you wait, with sub-millimetre accuracy for greater patient convenience.

“Everyone feels better when they can smile with confidence...!” says Gemma.

Discussions are always free and are on a no-obligation basis, with budgets and the methods of each procedure discussed. From there, patients can make the most informed decisions about their treatments, and be confident in the outcome of each procedure.

“Everyone feels better when they can smile with confidence,” says Gemma. “This month is National Smile Month, and we’ve a prize draw for patients to win a £200 hamper of dental care goodies when they come to see us. So we’re hoping that whatever your experience of dentistry in the past, you’ll discover a new approach with us; one that’s effective, pain free, and results in a happy, healthy smile.”

You can’t put a price on great

DENTISTRY “implants have changed my life. The treatment has made such a fantastic difference to my appearance and my health.” d.C. Lincoln Although I had always looked after my teeth, they were a lost cause from the start. I cried when I saw the photos Colin Sutton took of my teeth at the start of my treatment. You live with your teeth and get used to not really seeing them. I found these photographs upsetting. Colin said he makes people cry twice: once at the beginning and then again at the end. I’m nearing the end of my treatment now and I’m not ruling out shedding a tear! My journey started in February 2014 when I booked a free consultation with the Dental Health Centre. It made such a difference seeing Colin for this appointment. I read the practice’s CQC report and saw that Colin is a member of the Association of Dental Implantology, so I knew I was speaking to someone I could completely trust. There was no pressure and I was able to discuss all of my options. I was made fully aware of what would happen and was given a detailed plan – the whole process was faultless. Colin’s assistant, Gemma, put me in touch with another patient so that I could talk it through and I would be more than happy to do the same for someone else.

Gemma has been my point of contact throughout the process and I have always felt free to contact her with any questions. They may have seemed trivial but they were important to me and Gemma has always been there for me. It’s a question of trust and I trust them all implicitly. My surgery started in August. It has been hard but I went into treatment with my eyes open and I knew it would be worth it. I have had 14 teeth out and seven implants. I had decay and abscesses on the roots of my teeth, which there was nothing I could have done to prevent, so I knew I had to have the teeth removed. I had a decision to make: either have plastic teeth for the rest of my life or break my piggy bank and go with implants. I do not feel a shred of regret deciding on implants. It sounds melodramatic but this has changed my life. The treatment has made such a fantastic difference both to my appearance and my health because there was lots of infection previously. My main worry was that I would be left without teeth at some point during my treatment but this has never been the case. I have always had temporary but completely functional teeth and

if I’d not told my colleagues, they would have been none the wiser. I did have some bruising and swelling, which you would expect from this amount of treatment, but none of that would stop me from going through this all again. The results are absolutely wonderful. The practice is lovely and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Everywhere is clean, spacious and very bright. You feel confident when you are there and I can’t fault the service. It takes me an hour to drive to Grantham from Lincoln but it is irrelevant how far I have to travel because the service is fantastic. Duckworth says ‘Farewell’ to the

DEFENDER

it’s more usual to write about the launch of a car, rather than its demise... but we’ll make an exception this month. order books for the Land Rover Defender close after 67 years. it’s a car which is now inextricably linked with the name Duckworth in Lincolnshire, so we’ve spoken to the Market rasen and kirton based dealer’s Martin duckworth to gain his thoughts on the passing of a motoring legend...

Land Rover’s Defender is an anachronism. It’s a car which, in its early years, was unprecedented in its ability to go anywhere, and became synonymous with the countryside. It was a car conceived in 1947 by Rover which was, at that time, a firm better known for producing luxury cars - demand for which had plummeted. Since then though, it has been supplanted by many other 4x4 vehicles, not least the firm’s own Range Rover, Discovery and now defunct Freelander, all offering a modern, comfortable, civilised driving experience. Nobody is more acutely aware of the importance of the car than Martin Duckworth who, since 1980, has held the official Land Rover franchise in Market Rasen and latterly Kirton, near Boston, and whose engineering experience with the brand goes back even further. Having left school at 16, Martin began working in a small garage in Lincoln, before setting up in business with his father in 1962, forming James Duckworth & Son Auto & General Engineering. Whilst James Duckworth was a precision engineer, specialising in working on lathes and milling machines, Martin concentrated more on motor vehicles, from reboring to fixing trucks, tractors and even combine harvesters. “One vehicle that was always very much in demand was the Land Rover.” says Martin. “At that time a new vehicle commanded a two year waiting list, so ex-MOD models were highly sought after, and I could rebuild and sell examples so easily that I quickly became renowned in the county as a true aficionado of the vehicle.” Martin established a parts department and by the end of the 1970s, he was chosen by customers over main dealers to care for their vehicles. In was in early 1980 that Martin received a call from the UK bosses of Land Rover who requested a meeting with Martin, offering him the opportunity to establish himself as a Land Rover retail dealer, on the understanding that he find suitable premises, which he duly did at Racecourse Garage on Market Rasen’s Willingham Road. A Final Hurrah: Land Rover closes order books for the Defender, a car which can trace its roots back to 1948, this month. Production will then cease in December. Three special edition models go on sale this month to mark the end of an era.

“We acquired the old John Deere premises and launched with the Land Rover and the two door Range Rover, which was already winning lots of fans in the area.” says Martin, who was then invited onto the Land Rover dealer council in 1982. 155

1 - Lincs Pride JUNE 155_Layout 2 05/05/2015 13:43 Page 156

“We acquired the Kirton dealership, formerly known as Parkside, back in 2008, just as the recession began to hit.” says Martin. “It did have an impact, but it coincided with some really good new models which have made the brand stronger and stronger ever since.” The company now sells around 1,350 cars each year, with its new Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque models equally popular - accounting for about 18% of sales each. The Defender now accounts for less than 10% of the firm’s sales; testimony to the fact that whilst it remains competent, it’s a bit of an anachronism against its more modern stablemates. Order books for the Land Rover Defender will close at the end of June, so this is the last chance you have to order the vehicles, with production due to cease in December this year, ending a legacy of 67 years and over 2,000,000 vehicles.

Martin significantly grew and revamped the garage in 1990 on the strength of a preview of the brand’s forthcoming Discovery, a car which democratised the brand, providing the comfort of a Range Rover with the rugged ability of Land Rover, at a more affordable price point. “I remember seeing the car for the first time. It was really impressive, I knew it would be a game-changer.” he says. “I felt the same way with the launch of the smaller Land Rover, the Freelander, in 1998.” “The original Land Rover will always hold a place in my heart because of its reputation. Today I drive a Range Rover but have a Defender 90 [the current incarnation] for when I take the dogs for a walk in the countryside.”

Top: Martin shows off one of the £100,000 Autobiography models pushing Range Rover ever more upmarket. Above: A stark contrast is the interior of Martin’s Series I Land Rover! Opposite: Market Rasen Dealer Principal Gordon Joyce, Martin and Ben Duckworth.

“There are some who argue that there’s still nothing to touch a Defender off-road, but there’s no doubt that the ability that every current model in the Land Rover range has sufficient off-road ability for most people, and that the blend of comfort and day-today usability that models like the Discovery Sport - the successor to the Freelander - and the Discovery offer provides that ability with much more comfort and refinement too.”

Martin, along with daughter Sophie, son Ben Duckworth, now MD of the Duckworth Group, plus dealer principals Gordon Joyce and Andrew Shaw, say they’ll miss the Defender but take consolation in the fact that the current lineup is so strong elsewhere. For those clamouring to own a piece of motoring history, there’s also three ‘run out’ editions - an orange expedition spec vehicle, a luxurious ‘Autobiography’ model and a Heritage model finished in the original Grasmere Green shade. Prices for the three models range from £27,800 to £61,800. The Defender may be leaving Duckworth’s forecourt, but the family and their respect for the brand is stronger than ever, a fact echoed by each model’s popularity with Land Rover’s customer base, which is more diverse than ever. “Defender remains a phenomenal vehicle, but European emission and safety legislations have finally ended the vehicle’s production.” says Martin. “It’s a shame, but all good things must come to an end, and at least we’ve other vehicles to offer customers which are more technically sophisticated and more comfortable, but just as accomplished off-road.” n Duckworth Land Rover is based at Racecourse Garage, Willingham Road, Market Rasen, LN8 3RE, 01673 842101, and London Road, Kirton, PE20 1JH 01205 722110. SALES REPRESENTATIVE REQUIRED

Due to expansion of our successful sales team of 20 staff we require a personality who is full of enthusiasm! If you have sales experience it would be an advantage, although full training is provided. You will have excellent communication skills.

You’ll be selling advertising space in our high quality Wedding Magazines to the UK bridal trade. Our high quality bridal magazines are handed out at National Wedding Shows, and so you

will be required to work six weekends a year to hand out the magazine free of charge to brides-to-be (three weekends in Spring and three in Autumn). Time for these weekends are paid back in lieu. The job is office based, working in a beautiful converted barn with air conditioning and landscape gardens. After a very recent evaluation our staff described their job as enjoyable, fun, hard work and rewarding. Most of our

staff, in the evaluations, declared that they ‘loved’ their job and the people they worked with the most.

We own the number one wedding website in the UK (www.ukbride.co.uk), the largest database of brides-to-be in the UK and the number one county magazines in Lincolnshire Pride (and Rutland Pride). We also own one of the largest networks of wedding magazines in the UK too!
