eptember is here, and with it comes The Burghley Horse Trials. 167,500 visitors will enjoy the event this year and it will bring £20m of revenue into the town of Stamford. Each year 4,857 glasses of champagne and 2,000 ice creams are consumed at the event and the whole equestrian adventure is broadcast around the world.

A regular fixture in the year, it’s easy to take the event for granted or to grumble about a bit of traffic disruption… but really, would you change a thing? We certainly wouldn’t, which is why we celebrate this magnificent event in this edition.

Another recommended place to visit this month is Belvoir Castle’s Engine Yard, which celebrates its first anniversary in September. Yes, it’s a short drive out of the county, but well worth it. The present Mrs Davis and I enjoyed a day of wonderful shopping and dining in the Duchess of Rutland’s smart rural retail village. Read about the place in this edition and find out why Her Grace isn’t a stranger to a pair of yellow Marigolds. Stamford & Rutland Pride and Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials are seeking the Face of Burghley for the 2020 event! The Trials remains the country’s leading eventing fixture, attracting over 160,000 visitors in recent years and bringing £20m of revenue into the town. Next month the event will be crowning two visitors as the ‘Faces of Burghley’ with organisers launching their search to find an amateur male and female model who each encapsulate the verve, style and values of the event… the two will also star in the event’s 2020 marketing campaign with a professional photoshoot with Ruthie Dean Photography and they’ll feature in Pride Magazine before next year’s event.

Our partners in the competition include Oakham based EMG Management who have organised the competition, plus Stamford based salon Gerards Hair. Uppingham Scientist is appointed to national role DR DAVID BOYCE TAKES ON SCIENCE COUNCIL ROLE JOINING THE RANKS OF THE UK’S LEADING SCIENTISTS

UPPINGHAM Dr David Boyce, Uppingham School’s Head of Physics, has been appointed to an important national role overseeing science in the United Kingdom. As a member of the board of the Science Council (alongside his role at the School), Dr Boyce will make up one of the eleven who govern all of the professional scientific activities in the country. The Science Council is a membership organisation that represents many of the learned societies and professional bodies within science,

including the Royal Astronomical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Association of Science Education and the Nuclear Institute. Dr Boyce, being chartered in multiple disciplines as well as sitting on the Council of the Institute of Physics and the Council of the Institute of Maths, is admirably qualified for the role and the school says it is delighted to see him join the ranks of the country’s leading scientists. He will of course continue to teach and to inspire future Uppinghamians! n

HARBOROUGH Congratulations this month to Nevill Holt Opera, based just outside the village of Medbourne between Uppingham and Market Harborough. The company unveiled its new theatre in June 2018, and just over a year on it has already won no fewer than three East Midlands awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects for its striking new theatre. Now though, the theatre has succeeded in

receiving another prestigious RIBA National Award. This time the award is given to buildings across the UK recognised as being significant contributions to architecture. CHARITY SINGLE MUSICIAN’S BEST GIG AFTER SUPPORT FOLLOWING THEFT OF GUITARS Oakham musician Chris Poole is sounding great once more following support from the community after his beloved guitars were stolen. Chris, who recently released a charity single for Ketton teenager Sonny Ferry, had his guitars stolen from his car prior to a gig. A JustGiving appeal raised £1,200 to help fund new instruments. “My life and career is music based so they stole my work and money too,” says Chris, who also plays with the local band FunkedUp and runs Rutland Guitar School. “I’ve been overwhelmed by how much money has been donated from people I don’t even know,” says Chris who reckons he’s played his best gigs ever with

Hopefully with an abundance of wildlife... and if Bourne gardeners Jim and Joel have anything do with it, your garden will be a riot of colour that’s alive with bees and butterflies. The two brothers enjoyed a cameo on BBC’s Gardeners’ World recently, having established a number of wildlife gardens for clients in Dorset, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Scotland and Wales. The nature lovers’ keenness on introducing bees and butterflies to gardens have earned them the nickname The Butterfly Brothers, and have kept them in the gardening trade from the age of 18, since leaving Edenham Primary School and Bourne Grammar School. Roger Street of the society has applied for planning permission and sought the permission of Burghley Estates to site it on the building. Roger hopes town mayor Brenda Griffin will unveil it. Roger is also crowdfunding for a £100,000 statue of Daniel in Leicester. n

BUY TO RETIRE Professional property finder Kate Vincent discusses the changing face of retirement and what this may mean for your next property purchase. In stark contrast to our grandparent’s generation, where retirement meant living the quiet life and settling in modest accommodation, the retirees of today are seen by many as the ‘new young’; physically active, keen to travel and with a burning desire to live in a well-served location that facilitates a busy lifestyle. A consequence of this changing approach to life, often comes with some important decisions regarding housing. Here are some of the factors sixty or seventy somethings may need to think about when considering where to live in the often-active years after giving up paid employment. Is it time to downsize?

One of the first questions to consider is whether to stay put in the family home, surrounded by familiar things and packed with memories, or to move to a more manageable abode. For many, the reassurance of the familiar is a powerful magnet and the prospect of facing a major upheaval, clearing out the old and moving into the unknown is an unattractive prospect.

Movers are often motivated by the appeal of the new and the potential to release some equity, either to supplement their pensions or perhaps, provide some financial support to their offspring. Much has been written in the media in recent years about the young’s difficulty in affording to get on the housing ladder and without help from the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’, it is often proving to be impossible – particularly if looking to buy in London.

There is also an increasing trend for some retirees to plan well ahead and purchase a property they will eventually move to, but for

the time being, will let out the newly acquired home until the time comes when they feel ready, or indeed need to move. This type of purchase has gained in popularity recently due to relaxed rules on accessing funds from pensions and generates rental income whilst the new property is let.

What options are available for retired sellers? Once the decision to move has been made, one of the initial questions to consider is what to do with the existing home. After living in the same home for maybe decades, the idea of entering the housing market, having photos of your personal spaces posted on the internet and buyers scrutinising your home can be particularly unappetising for many. One option is to sell ‘off-market’ where a select few of targeted, fully proceedable buyers are introduced to the property on a discrete basis and the resulting sale can be transacted in a low key and calm manner.

A great place to retire A couple of years ago, The Times declared Rutland as the number one location for retirees in the UK and for those living here already the appeal is unquestionable. For new retirees considering a move to the area, Rutland and Stamford offer many of the features required for an active retirement. Located in central UK, the area has excellent connections to the rest of the country; close to the A1/M1 for easy north/south driving to visit family, several major airports (East Midlands, Birmingham, Stansted) which depending where you live are within an hour or so, and access to a varied social life in Stamford and outdoor pursuits in Rutland. Trials is now classified by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) as a five star event. It was awarded the status in January 2019 and is one of only six such fixtures in the world.

G is for Grand Slam: Land Rover Burghley

Horse Trials, Rolex Kentucky and Badminton

in 1961 when its previous fixture, Harewood, was cancelled due to a suspected foot and mouth outbreak. The Marquess of Exeter invited the British Horse Society to use Burghley’s parkland instead.

for Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is £312,000. The event relies on 1,100 volunteers, 26 gallons of Pimm’s are consumed and TV crews rig up 25,000m of cabling to broadcast the event.

O is for Obstacles: There are a total of 30

obstacles on the cross country course which is, itself, around 6,500m long, snaking through the Burghley estate’s parkland.

P is for Pony: New to the event this year is the

Shetland Pony Grand National in the main arena, the finals of which are held on Saturday just before the Cross Country element begins.

Q is for Queues: With over 167,500 attending last year, we strongly advise beating the queues and booking tickets online in advance. Four day admission is £64/person.

R is for Range Rover: The title sponsor of the

T is for Three Disciplines: The Dressage phase

of the Three Day Event tests the basic training of the horse, which helps the horse to develop an improved posture for carrying a rider and increases his obedience and calmness.

Their daughter Zara Phillips is the only child of two former winners to compete at the Event. In 2017 HRH The Countess of Wessex visited Burghley on the Sunday of the Event to present the winner with the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy. n

FLY MUST

Is there a chap with a better tan in the whole of Rutland? We suspect not... and a golden hue is just one of the advantages to be gained from a day spent on the reservoir with Rob Waddington, the area’s keenest advocate of the simple pleasure of fly ﬁshing... Words: Laurin Dempsey.

What’s the old saying? ‘Do a job you love and you’ll never go to work again.’ Well, Rob Waddington would go along with that. “Fly fishing,” he says, “has been a passion ever since I was a boy. I’m lucky to have a profession that I love so much.” The fisherman can usually be found bobbing up on the relatively calm waters of the reservoir, topping up his very impressive tan. He’s an honorary native, having lived in Rutland since 1994 and endured a range of rather more prosaic careers before getting fed up of the daily grind and instead opted to turn his back on the rat race to pursue fish instead. Now, he spends his days in a beautiful part of a beautiful county doing something he vastly prefers to an interminable desk job with paperwork and strip lighting.

It could all have been so different though. Originally born in Bradford, Rob has been a musician, too, playing the drums with New Model Army from 1980 to 1982 the punk rock antithesis to those floppy haired new romantics! He then worked in product design within the clothing and accessories sector with a manufacturing company supplying bags and footwear to M& S, Next and other well known high street retailers.

It was then in 1994 that he moved to Rutland having become a director of key accounts for manufacturing firm Arnold Wills Group in Uppingham - which first involved travelling the world - and latterly meant discovering the joys of Rutland’s enormous pond.

Having enjoyed fishing as a young lad on local ponds, canals and rivers with friends, Rob realised he could turn his hobby into a career and parted with Arnold Wills to take a course in order to gain a qualification to teach fly fishing. Starting small in 2003 - just himself, a rowing boat and a lot of hard work - he established ‘Rutland Fly Fishing Adventures’ and is now a fully qualified, award winning and fully insured coach in trout and salmon fly fishing.

Rob is a level two licensed coach and has the only government recognised sports coach qualification issued through the Angling Trust. Rob is also an active member of the Game Angling Instructors Association (GAIA), Salmon & Trout Association, an Orvis endorsed guide, a SONIK world team member and approved instructor with fly fishing tackle supplier Fishtec. >> 30

“The basis of fly fishing is that we imitate the food items which the trout are feeding on (by using intricately tied artificial flies, itself an art rather than using ‘real bait’) then find out where they are, what they are feeding on and try to fool them with our fly...” >> Spotting the opportunity to skive off in the sunshine for a couple of hours and top up our tan on Rutland Water, we caught up with Rob before another one of his overseas trips.

For the uninitiated, fly fishing is defined as the sport of fishing using a rod and an artificial fly as bait. The main difference between fly fishing and conventional - spin or bait - fishing is that whilst fly fishing utilises the weight of the line to carry the hook through the air, in spin and bait fishing, it’s the weight of the lure or sinker at the end of the monofilament or braided line which gives casting distance. “Part of the skill in fly fishing is to accurately imitate the food items the fish - trout in this case - are feeding on, using intricately tied artificial flies, the creation of which is in itself an art.” And then, of course, there’s the cast. Casting is simultaneously the most active and delicate part of fishing, casting the line well. The fly itself doesn’t weigh anything so the trick is to use the rod to cast the line to present the fly to trout. Of course it is not as easy as it seems to look… that is why it is called ‘fishing’ and not ‘catching.’ “Fish are wild animals after all, so they don’t make it easy for us,” points out Rob, with the sort of gentle, effortlessly imparted philosophical wisdom you’d expect from a chap whose time in a rowing boat affords him the opportunity to contemplate at leisure the vast intricacies abounding life and fishing. “The greater the challenge, the better the reward,” he says. “But the good thing about fly fishing is that you can catch virtually any fish as long as you imitate its food with a type of fly.”

A keen advocate of teaching others to discover the pleasure of fly fishing, Rob offers his Ultimate Fly Fishing Day which, like all good days, begins with tea and cakes. Rob operates from his fishing lodge on a little peninsular on the North Shore of the reservoir. From there, he also operates his Lakeside Bed and Breakfast which, we’re assured, offers the one of the best breakfasts in the county. The near famous ‘Barnsdale Breakfast’ incorporating his cold-cured oak smoked trout and scrambled eggs. “We then go into the fishing cabin, an idyllic haven with fishing memorabilia and masses of fishing pictures,” says Rob.

“It’s a chance to teach everything from casting, to what tackle and flies to use. I take some eager guests outside to practice casting with a fly rod before going aboard a motor boat to fish on what I reckon is the UK’s greatest trout fishing stillwater. They usually have the day of their lives!”

“A highlight for me is when a newcomer catches their first fish on the fly... which, luckily happens a lot! Young people are especially keen and together we can produce memories that last forever.” “We also want to see more youngsters coming into fly fishing. Most people start off fishing for carp and other coarse fish which can be a bit easier to begin with, then come into fly fishing later, when you can appreciate the pleasures to be had catching big fish with no weights, or gears involved.”

“I’m guiding and coaching far more ladies these days. It is great to see both women and children of all ages enjoying the outdoors because fishing used to be quite male-centric. Fortunately, there are some excellent women’s fly fishing teams and there’s more interest from woman than ever before.” “Rutland is seen as one of the best fly fishing lakes in the country however not necessarily the easiest. It’s famous for the quality of it’s trout, predatory pike and zander but it’s the former that we’re really interested in. The water produces some really beautiful, powerful - and tasty - fish.”

“I also offer fly fishing trips for the pure enjoyment and corporate events and team building days. I’m also an Orvis endorsed fly fishing guide and help more experienced anglers too, as it takes many years to know how to handle Rutland Water and get the best from it.” Rob’s own passion is fly fishing for Tarpon - a rather violent Pacific fish between a metre and two metres long - in the clear salt water of the Caribbean.

“Fishing is an obsession I can’t get enough of,” says Rob. “I love fishing for Atlantic Salmon and have been visiting Northern Russia’s Kola Peninsula in the Arctic Circle for many years. Catching a big salmon on a fly from a big river is about as exciting as it gets... but nothing quite beats the calmness and scenery of Rutland!” n

THE VITRUVIAN

Established in 2003, the Vitruvian started from humble beginnings and less than 250 starters in its first year.

Since then the Vitruvian has grown into one of the most respected and iconic races on the UK calendar.

With a two lap 1900m swim in front of highly enthusiastic crowds the race starts as it means to go on and the double lap bike course covering 85km in total is not for the faint hearted. With the 21km run to finish it off the Vitruvian is a true test of endurance.

With similar distance races often referred to as half Ironman or middle distance it can be misleading to equate the Vitruvian to other events. There is nothing half or middling about the Vitruvian. This is a full on triathlon and only if you finish it you can call yourself a Vitruvian.

REVOLUTIONS is month we’re celebrating the first anniversary of one of the area’s success stories as Her Grace Emma Manners, the Duchess of Rutland, reflects on the first year of trading for her £2.5m Engine Yard development. We join the Duchess to crack the Champagne corks, but first, she has some washing up to finish... Words & Images: Rob Davis.

Time flies when you’re having fun… or when you’re stuck in the kitchen. Just ask the Duchess of Rutland, Emma Manners. For the past 12 months she’s done both. It’s been great fun, she says, ensuring that the new £2.5m artisan shopping village on the Belvoir Castle estate has got up to speed, although she’s had to work rather hard to make the project a success, even donning a pair of rubber gloves and getting stuck into the washing up. “It’s a really personal project,” says the Duchess. “Every single thing in the Engine Yard I have hand-held. Every piece of decoration or lighting, every fabric I’ve chosen carefully, so it’s been a real labour of love.” The 15,000 acre estate of Belvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Manners family and the present Duke and Duchess of Rutland have been incumbent since 1999. Adjacent to the Grade I listed 450ft tall castle, which dates back to 1799, is The Engine Yard.

This collection of former workshops once housed a cutting edge 20-ton beam engine to pump water from Holwell Spring in Woolsthorpe to supply the castle with fresh water. The technology soon fell into redundancy, the site itself became scruffy.

Enter the Duchess with her characteristic big ideas to transform the site and in 2014 the area was cleared as part of a £2.5m restoration project designed to create a local community centre – a sort of new village for the Vale of Belvoir when traditional villages and market towns are ailing amid out of town superstores.

“Our idea at the Engine Yard is that it’s the people’s yard. I want it to be inclusive, to be for the community and I want to know what people want to see here. “I worked in finance and in sales prior to having children and latterly working as a life coach, for Slimming World and as a bookkeeper. Mary, Queen of Scots, lost her head at Oundle’s Fotheringhay Castle. Part of that building was ‘reclaimed’ (pilfered) to create the fabric of Orton Hall in the leafy, posh suburb of the city of Peterborough’s Orton Longueville. The arched stone doorway that Mary walked through prior to joining the great majority is pretty low and now has a sign above saying, without irony, ‘mind your head,’ proving conclusively that sometimes it’s a good idea to take good advice… so in that very same spirit, we’ve some good advice for you. Visit this month’s wonderful restaurant. Located in one of Peterborough’s six Orton villages, the hotel is one of a trio in the Abacus Hotel group, alongside Knights Hill in Kings Lynn and the enigmatically named Le Strange Arms in the North Norfolk town of Old Hunstanton. It’s set in 20 acres of mature and lovely parkland, and dates back to the 17th century,

with later additions in 1835. It remained in the family of the Marquess of Huntly, George Gordon – synonymous with the Gordon’s Gin brand – until financial whoopsies in the 1880s, rambling estates elsewhere in the UK and the usual trials and tribulations of familial succession meant it was less beloved by the family, who offloaded it in 1954, whereupon it became a girls’ school.

Abacus Hotels purchased it back in 1990, refurbished it and subsequently opened for business in 1991. The country house hotel now has 70 bedrooms, eight conference or private dining rooms, a spa and an adjacent pub, the Ramblewood Inn. His philosophy is admirably simple; good ingredients, a key ingredient that’s allowed to do its job and smart presentation.

Kevin’s menu is admirably simple too; a couple of pre-starters; eight starters; 10 main courses; seven desserts plus a local cheese option. No specials, tasting menus, just decent choice and some appealing dishes. It’s all very well priced, too.

There’s an eclectic mishmash of different ages of stones, battlements, plus a round tower and fancy stained glass windows all working together to give the building a grand old feel.

Inside the hotel, soaring ceilings, elaborate carved wood and a proper old school country mansion look all give the place a smart, formal, traditional feel, a nice antidote to the slew of ‘Farrow & Ballsed-up’ country pubs that pervade the city’s surrounding villages. Local suppliers include R&P Meats who source local beef and Norfolk pork, fish comes from Coles of King’s Lynn - near Orton Hall’s sister hotels - and there’s veg from a local supplier, Barsby’s, as well. Bread is made in house, desserts, ice creams and sorbets are, too. Even the petit fours served with coffee are made by the team.

Presentation of each dish is stunning and each dish is a class act of technical chefcraft as well as creativity.

If you need an additional incentive to the very high quality of dining on offer, consider the possibility of a spa day at the hotel with an overnight stay, or just spend time at Peterborough’s Ferry Meadows, just two minutes down the road, for nature, walks, cycle rides, or a trip on Nene Valley’s steam trains. That’s in addition to Peterborough’s wealth of events at the East of England Arena, again just five minutes from the city.

August 29th sees Equifest 2019 - an amuse bouche to the great Burghley Horse Trials - as well as the Land Rover Owner International Show and the Festival of Antiques show on 27th September. Peterborough Cathedral, meanwhile, hosts artist’s Luke Jerram’s Gaia, a seven metre, 1.8m scale model of the earth in dazzling 120dpi detail. Hidden away in its leafy enclave and surrounded by Pizzaborough’s surfeit of chain restaurants and village pubs, it’s possible you’ll have overlooked the availability of dining at Orton Hall. But for those seeking quality autumn dining plus comfort and value, it’s a definite recommendation… just remember to mind your head. n

Something to trout - sorry, shout - about this month as we present a delicious oriental dish using local trout caught at Rutland Water...

SMOKED TROUT NOODLES With Wasabi Dressing

Preparation time: Ten minutes. Cooking time: Five minutes. 250g Thai rice noodles • 1 tsp Clearspring wasabi powder Juice of 1 lime • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tsp light muscovado sugar 2 x 125g packs hot smoked trout fillets, flaked • 225g mange tout, shredded 100g radishes, thinly sliced • Four Little Gem lettuce hearts, sliced Cook the rice noodles in a pan of boiling water for five minutes, drain well and then cool. Mix together the wasabi powder and 1 tbsp warm water. Stir in the lime juice, soy sauce and sugar and set aside, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves. When ready to serve, toss together the trout (removing any small bones), rice noodles, mange tout, radishes and lettuce. Divide between bowls, drizzle over the wasabi dressing and serve. n

When you consider the layout of a family home, conventionally, the main living areas and kitchen are located downstairs with the bedrooms upstairs. Not in the case of this month’s ‘upside down’ house though.

Gallery House has been owned for 19 years by Georgia and her husband Clive, along with their two children (now aged 21 and 18). Upside down living - reverse living as it’s also termed - has been the ‘norm’ for this family. “It’s a logical way to live in the space provided,” she says. The property is Grade II listed, made of local stone and Collyweston slate and is a stable block conversion retaining many original features, such as the saddle racks hanging on the wall in the corridor, exposed brickwork and the foaling box windows that look onto each of the three ground floor bedrooms. The property sits within the former grounds of Ashwell Hall dating back to 1879, then being converted in 2000 by Enterprise Heritage Developments.

It’s situated down a long gravel driveway and is now one of just nine properties within the development.

“You automatically feel comfortable at The Stables. There was only one previous owner of Gallery House for eight months before us, so this really has been our own space to call home.”

The property’s entrance hall gives access to the entire ground floor with three double bedrooms, a family bathroom and a double garage that has been converted to a studio by Georgia and the family. You will then welcomed by an impressive galleried landing on the first floor giving access to open plan living with a reception room, kitchen, master bedroom and further office space. Georgia has even removed doors from the upper level to help with this effect. Further original features are also highlighted with exposed timberwork and trusses of the roof structure which highlights the original and quirky nature of what was once the hay loft. On the subject of space, there’s also an Main/Left: Upstairs there are soaring ceilings providing and abundance of light, downstairs an industrial vibe.

abundance outdoors with a quarter of an acre of low maintenance gardens to the front of the property, suitable for animal lovers and young children, as tried and tested by the family’s rescue greyhounds and the many foster children that have come and gone. Natural light really does showcase this property and one of the reasons this way of living works so well.

Now that Georgia’s two children have ‘flown the nest’ it’s time for a new chapter in the couple’s life, and the two are looking for a rural property with lots more land so that Georgia can start an eco tree-house business. With the family now looking for some more non-conformists to enjoy upside down living, we predict that Georgia and the family will take their reverse living style with them to their new place! n

It’s human nature to look upon shiny new things with a sense of awe and wonder. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the few wealthy and literate folk to possess books would read of Marco Polo’s travels to the orient and then Vasco da Gama’s sea route to India a century or so later. Gradually, westerners became aware of an exotic new world of spices, rich silks and new philosophies.

is month’s front covers have been inspired by our aﬀection for Chinoiserie, a trend for 2020 homes. With improvements in digital printing techniques, creating bold colours, detailed patterns and introducing oriental inﬂuences into your home is easier than ever... Words: Rob Davis.

It’s little wonder, then, that this fascination with the perceived Eastern aesthetic endured and evolved - with the help of Baroque-era Rococo - into a style that pastiched the oriental look, a style we know today as Chinoiserie. Chinese Influences...

Chinois - literally Chinese in French - was popularised in the 17th and 18th centuries, popularised by Balzac and a Georgian fascination with drinking tea, curating collections of porcelain, creating manufactured imitations of lacquered oriental furniture and blending the style with the look of a traditional English country home. Chinoiserie enjoyed yet another renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s, with William Morris’s

similarly ‘busy’ wallpaper prints influencing a resurgence shortly after his death in 1896. And so, here we are again, with yet another resurgence of the look predicated, we think, by a move away from the neutrality of grey and taupe rooms, and a desire to once again introduce a little colour into our homes... as well as recent technological developments. Digital printing, has enabled wallcovering designers to efficiently replicate the handpainted look of those Chinoiserie wallpapers and fabrics as well as friezes, though without the necessity of hand-painting them, which made them the sole preserve of the wealthy. Recreating Chinoiserie...

Do dogs speak in different languages? Bark in Spanish? I’d eyed-up the perfect photo of gardener Sam Pond’s Beagle/Cairn cross, peeping around a wrought iron gate with a border of colourful delphiniums in the background. But it was no good. Despite my endeavours to wit canine-coercion, Pedro wasn’t having any of it.

NGS Opening Matthew and Rebecca open Prebendal House’s gardens for the NGS scheme each year and at other times for groups by prior arrangement.

“You have to speak Spanish to him,” said Sam and went back to tending the hedges and borders of white Macmillan roses that flank the walled garden of Empingham’s Prebendal House, leaving me to muse on whether he was pulling my leg or whether man’s best friend really is bilingual… or just stubborn. The mutt wasn’t playing ball, but the garden – and the weather – was. Rebecca and Matthew purchased Prebendal House over three years ago, undertaking a two year renovation project on both the house and garden. The garden is four acres, with a further 35 acres of pasture surrounding it.

Matthew continues to inform us that the property was once part of the Normanton Park Estate and was once an agricultural concern. From looking at previous Ordiance Survey Maps it also had an orchard area planted in the 19th century and a fish pond fed with a natural spring.

An interesting aside is the family’s belief that the 19th century author Anthony Trollope has stayed here. Two of his nieces rented the property for a short while, and Anthony mentioned Rutland and Empingham within his novels, clearly knowing his way around. “The house was built in 1688 and the aim was to re-establish an 18th century style of garden in sympathy with the property,” says Matthew.

“This is achieved by the large formal 18th century south facing walled garden which is Grade II* listed and incorporates brick lined walls made from local stone. It’s a very traditional and clever way of 88

reflecting the heat perfectly, helping to grow plants and flowers which thrive in warmer climates.

Rebecca and Matthew have made the garden child-friendly, removing a big old pond to create a sunken garden with a more modest water feature, a firepit, Japanese acers and at least ten varieties of salvias somewhat of a speciality for the garden. The walled garden features a mix of David Austin roses, cut flower beds and a vegetable patch with sweet peas. There’s a yew border adjacent to the main lawn too with myriad colours and wildflowers.

“We wanted the walled garden to look really traditional and to have a vegetable area and a market garden providing fruit and cutting flowers and a production area with glasshouses,” says Matthew.

“The formal borders surrounding the house has a topiary theme throughout with borders and pleached hedges that transition into the parkland where we’ve tried to ensure plenty of wild flowers. The intention is that there’s something of interest within the garden all year round from spring to winter.” >>

“Sam is great, not least because he thinks ahead about and makes plans for the garden a year in advance. It’s important not to neglect planning amid ongoing work - there will always be something to do and things always will get in the way, but by being organised and not too ambitious for any one year, you can add to the garden bit by bit.”

Beyond the formal areas of lawn which replaced a large swimming pool, happily, Matthew and Rebecca have created an area of formal lawn immaculately kept by Sam,

At the bottom of the garden, overlooking pasture, is an area with a contemporary teardrop shaped cocoon hammock - an enviable place to read overlooking a statue of the previous owners’ horse. Another impressive string to Sam’s bow is his ability to make and maintain dry stone

walling. That’ll come in handy down through the years when seeking to maintain the beautiful stonework in the garden as repairs become necessary. Sam’s talents are huge; he’s done a superb job maintaining but also creating a vision for the future of the garden. Together with Matthew and Rebecca’s efforts, this is one Rutland garden which will doubtless look marvellous now but will evolve for years to come too.

Once I could be sure Sam was safely out of the way and wouldn’t laugh at me and with Pedro still keeping an eye on the photographer, I attempted dialogo con el perro once more. “Hola, perro! Siéntate!” Sure enough, straight down on the grass. Well I’ll be damned… n

On Cloud Nine

After attending no fewer than nine other weddings as guests, it was finally local couple Jasmine and Chris’s turn to say ‘I do!’ They did so at a wonderfully warm outdoor ceremony in Rutland, surrounded by family and friends... Jasmine and Chris celebrated becoming husband and wife recently with a wedding of their dreams at in Exton in May.

It made a change for the couple to be centre of attention, having attended no fewer than nine weddings of friends and family before enjoying their own. With permanent smiles all day long, it’s a day the couple wish they relive over and over again!

Jasmine and Chris are from Peterborough and work in the hospitality industry. They wonder if they’d crossed paths before whilst working without ever realising it!

“As soon as we drove up the road of Barnsdale Hall to the main reception, we were impressed with the grounds and views overlooking Rutland Water. We took one look at the area outside the Edith Weston suite where the hotel holds its outdoor ceremonies and we were just in awe of how beautiful it was.”

It was three years later at the start of 2017 that Chris and her son, close friends and his Sister and husband planned the proposal to Jasmine on a family break at Centre Parcs… though it very nearly didn’t go to plan!

Luckily for Chris, the others had decided to venture out, leaving the couple on their own.

“We had supper out with the group in the evening and Chris’s Sister said she would take our son Harry back to get him ready for bed and our friends also sneakily escaped to the arcade, unbeknown to me that they were in on it the whole time!”

“He started to pull a box out of his pocket and my first response was to ask if he was joking. He laughed, then I started crying! He asked me to be his wife and of course I said yes! A few glasses of champagne were presented to us and we celebrated together.”

As any excited bride-to-be would, Jasmine didn’t wait long to start looking for ideas and only two months later, they started looking for venues in the area. Their first post of call was a wedding venue, so they could arrange everything else around an available date.

“We officially met in August 2014 at the Peterborough Beer Festival. I had gone with a couple of friends from work and Chris had joined us later on. We have a very similar sense of humour so naturally we got on well straight away.”

“Chris had found a lovely spot off the beaten track that he wanted to show me, but I had felt poorly the previous couple of days so when he suggested a walk in the very fresh air (it was February, after all!), you can only imagine my lack of interest... which nearly derailed the whole proposal!”

“We strolled back to our cabin, everywhere was very still and quiet, then when we were nearly at the end of the path Chris stopped me by a nicely lit area with a little bench and an old fashioned phonebox.”

“Taking our vows felt very real,” says Jasmine on her favourite part of the day. “I finally got to share the same name as my Son, so that was really special to us all.”

“Our main advice to other couples getting married is to relax and to enjoy a special time in your life.” “It’s easy to stress over minor details like the weather or whether everything is ‘right.’ But nobody should look back on your day and realise they wasted a split second, as it really does go quickly.”

“We can also recommend taking some time out to be by yourselves and spending time together. It’s so easy to be too ‘busy’ with friends and relatives that ironically the one person you don’t see on the big day is the person you’ve just married!”

“I can honestly say we had the best time on our wedding day. We hear certain songs that were played that night whilst we are walking around a shop or something, and it gives us both a little buzz of happiness!”

“One final recommendation: if you’re looking for somewhere a little different for your honeymoon, we recommend Porto Santo, a small Island next to Madeira, off the coast of Morocco. It’s peaceful, not too ‘touristy’ and it allows you to relax together!” n 96

A NEW ONE-STOP SPINAL CLINIC has been launched at Avicenna Clinic enabling speedy assessment of patients with acute or chronic back pain providing a more efficient service for patients, with quicker diagnosis and minimal waiting times for appointments. This innovative new clinic offers accurate fast assessment of patients’ individual symptoms by international highly experienced spinal surgeon Mr Masood Shafafy, who will then provide advice about pain relief and recommend a treatment pathway as appropriate. The new service aims to have a clinical consultation and important diagnostic tests done at one visit. The unique benefit of the service is that it brings a multi-disciplinary team, including Pain Management Consultants, physiotherapy specialists, Musculoskeletal Interventional Radiologist, psychologist, occupational therapist together in one area to ensure patients are able to have their initial consultation, a variety of diagnostic tests, investigations and their followup consultation in the same day, reducing the need for multiple visit all in our state-of-theart Diagnostic Centre including the only open interventional MRI in east of England. STAMFORD South Kesteven has an active and thriving economy, boasting above average levels of employment and good job opportunities, according to a new report published by InvestSK. The South Kesteven Economic Intelligence Report includes statistics within the report show that the area remains an affordable place in which to live, work, invest and run a business. Productivity in South Kesteven has increased at nearly double the regional and national rates and the district has experienced a prolonged period of growth.

Local business stock increased by an additional 695 enterprises. Levels of employment and self-employment saw a 2.8 per cent increase in people working in South Kesteven between 2017 and 2018. The level of pay for people who live in South Kesteven has increased at a quicker rate than the rest of Great Britain, whilst house prices in the district have been growing at a faster rate than the UK average. This shows confidence and demand in the South Kesteven outlining the attractiveness of the district as a place to live. n

RUTLAND Central Government has agreed to put Blaby District Council and Rutland County Council in its Garden Communities programme to ensure a share of £3 million to develop plans for the former St George’s Barracks and Whetstone Pastures schemes. St George’s Barracks is due to close in 2021/22 and has been earmarked for 2,215 homes, new businesses, a new primary school, healthcare facilities and a country park. Sir Ebenezer Howard first created the garden village concept in Letchworth and Welwyn, designed to promote healthy living and green spaces. n

‘BREAD-Y OR NOT, HERE I CRUMB!’ SAYS HAMBLETON BAKERY WITH NEW EXPANSION PLANS...

Hambleton Bakery is looking to expand by building a new bakery at the site of the former Ram Jam Inn off the A1 north of Stamford. A planning application has been submitted to Rutland County Council and includes a proposal to accommodate a larger shop, visitor centre and café at the existing bakery site in Exton. Tim Hart, who founded Hambleton Bakery with head baker Julian Carter in November 2008, said: “Julian needs more production space and we feel that it would be a pity to build too much more on our beautiful Exton site.” 129
