WELCOME

S

eptember is here, and with it comes The Burghley Horse Trials. 167,500 visitors will enjoy the event this year and it will bring £20m of revenue into the town of Stamford. Each year 4,857 glasses of champagne and 2,000 ice creams are consumed at the event and the whole equestrian adventure is broadcast around the world.

A regular fixture in the year, it’s easy to take the event for granted or to grumble about a bit of traffic disruption… but really, would you change a thing? We certainly wouldn’t, which is why we celebrate this magnificent event in this edition.

Another recommended place to visit this month is Belvoir Castle’s Engine Yard, which celebrates its first anniversary in September. Yes, it’s a short drive out of the county, but well worth it. The present Mrs Davis and I enjoyed a day of wonderful shopping and dining in the Duchess of Rutland’s smart rural retail village. Read about the place in this edition and find out why Her Grace isn’t a stranger to a pair of yellow Marigolds. Elsewhere in Pride this month we’re visiting the sublime Orton Hall for a dining experience par excellence, we’re enjoying the gardens of Empingham’s Prebendal House and we meet Rob Waddington on the reservoir for a fly fishing sortie. Best wishes for a wonderful month!

Butterfly Brothers of Bourne on TV

GARDENERS’ WORLD CAMEO FOR JIM AND JOEL ASHTON’S WILDLIFE GARDENS BOURNE How does your garden grow? Hopefully with an abundance of wildlife... and if Bourne gardeners Jim and Joel have anything do with it, your garden will be a riot of colour that’s alive with bees and butterflies. The two brothers enjoyed a cameo on BBC’s Gardeners’ World recently, having established a number of wildlife gardens for clients in Dorset, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Scotland and Wales. The nature lovers’ keenness on introducing bees and butterflies to gardens have earned them the nickname The Butterfly Brothers, and have kept them in the gardening trade from the age of 18, since leaving Edenham Primary School and Bourne Grammar School. One of their more recent gardens, completed in 2015 was featured on the corporation’s flagship

PROPERTY FINDERS

BUY TO RETIRE Professional property finder Kate Vincent discusses the changing face of retirement and what this may mean for your next property purchase. In stark contrast to our grandparent’s generation, where retirement meant living the quiet life and settling in modest accommodation, the retirees of today are seen by many as the ‘new young’; physically active, keen to travel and with a burning desire to live in a well-served location that facilitates a busy lifestyle. A consequence of this changing approach to life, often comes with some important decisions regarding housing. Here are some of the factors sixty or seventy somethings may need to think about when considering where to live in the often-active years after giving up paid employment. Is it time to downsize?

One of the first questions to consider is whether to stay put in the family home, surrounded by familiar things and packed with memories, or to move to a more manageable abode. For many, the reassurance of the familiar is a powerful magnet and the prospect of facing a major upheaval, clearing out the old and moving into the unknown is an unattractive prospect.

Movers are often motivated by the appeal of the new and the potential to release some equity, either to supplement their pensions or perhaps, provide some financial support to their offspring. Much has been written in the media in recent years about the young’s difficulty in affording to get on the housing ladder and without help from the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’, it is often proving to be impossible – particularly if looking to buy in London.

There is also an increasing trend for some retirees to plan well ahead and purchase a property they will eventually move to, but for

the time being, will let out the newly acquired home until the time comes when they feel ready, or indeed need to move. This type of purchase has gained in popularity recently due to relaxed rules on accessing funds from pensions and generates rental income whilst the new property is let.

What options are available for retired sellers? Once the decision to move has been made, one of the initial questions to consider is what to do with the existing home. After living in the same home for maybe decades, the idea of entering the housing market, having photos of your personal spaces posted on the internet and buyers scrutinising your home can be particularly unappetising for many. One option is to sell ‘off-market’ where a select few of targeted, fully proceedable buyers are introduced to the property on a discrete basis and the resulting sale can be transacted in a low key and calm manner.

A great place to retire A couple of years ago, The Times declared Rutland as the number one location for retirees in the UK and for those living here already the appeal is unquestionable. For new retirees considering a move to the area, Rutland and Stamford offer many of the features required for an active retirement. Located in central UK, the area has excellent connections to the rest of the country; close to the A1/M1 for easy north/south driving to visit family, several major airports (East Midlands, Birmingham, Stansted) which depending where you live are within an hour or so, and access to a varied social life in Stamford and outdoor pursuits in Rutland. Independent

Kate Vincent Garrington

research also reveals that Rutland is a lot more affordable than the ever-popular Cotswolds, which is similar in many ways but typically comes at a premium. Common challenges to think about

When choosing the type of house suitable for your next move, the challenge for retirees is to find somewhere that is smaller and easier to maintain (fit to lock up and go) but still big enough to accommodate the furniture that has filled a larger house and also, perhaps visiting family and grandchildren. Many want a reasonable sized garden, character but not a huge maintenance load and a peaceful location within easy reach, possibly walking distance, of shops, restaurants and social groups. Thinking longer term, many also like to consider if they can no longer drive or need more regular access to medical facilities. No doubt about it, there is a lot to consider. The property market, no matter which location or property type you are considering, is forever changing. For even the most weathered of property buyers the complexities can be overwhelming; having a trusted advisor acting on your behalf and able to offer objective advice can lift the pressure at a time of great change.

BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS 5TH - 8TH SEPTEMBER

As well as being a first class country show, celebrating all that rural life has to offer, Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is also a world-class sporting fixture, attracting 167,500 visitors in 2018 and contributing £20m to Stamford’s economy... LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS represents the most important event in Stamford’s calender, and a clarion call for anyone who loves the athleticism and challenges of world-class eventing. Here, we’re providing an A-Z of the event for both the seasoned visitor and the uninitiated alike...

Horse Trials together make up the Rolex Grand Slam of eventing. Winning all three successively means a prize of £280,000 in addition to the individual fixtures’ prizes £95,000 for Burghley; £100,000 for Badminton and £88,000 for Kentucky. A potential total prize of £563,000!

the event, all inspected by independent vets to confirm their fitness prior to the event.

K is for Knowhow: If you’re a competitor,

seeking some tips, we’d suggest a word with William Fox-Pitt, the Brit who remains Burghley’s most successful competitor. He’s won the title six times (1994, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2011), so he should be best placed to offer some Burghley knowhow.

Pride & Rutland Pride will take their place on the judging panel of The Face of Burghley. Our news section will explain what the judges are looking for!

N is for Numbers: The total prize fund

for Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is £312,000. The event relies on 1,100 volunteers, 26 gallons of Pimm’s are consumed and TV crews rig up 25,000m of cabling to broadcast the event.

O is for Obstacles: There are a total of 30

obstacles on the cross country course which is, itself, around 6,500m long, snaking through the Burghley estate’s parkland.

P is for Pony: New to the event this year is the

Shetland Pony Grand National in the main arena, the finals of which are held on Saturday just before the Cross Country element begins.

Q is for Queues: With over 167,500 attending last year, we strongly advise beating the queues and booking tickets online in advance. Four day admission is £64/person.

R is for Range Rover: The title sponsor of the

event is Land Rover. Their current model lineup includes the stylish Range Rover Evoque, Velar, Sport and Vogue. Land Rover will also be displaying its Discovery Sport and Discovery models. The firm supplies 50 vehicles both for use as courtesy vehicles and to be placed around the cross country course.

S is for Stamford: The town of Stamford benefits

from the Horse Trials to the tune of £20m a year, with restaurants, hotels and shops in the town enjoying a surge in business during the event.

T is for Three Disciplines: The Dressage phase

of the Three Day Event tests the basic training of the horse, which helps the horse to develop an improved posture for carrying a rider and increases his obedience and calmness.

The most popular and the most demanding of the three disciplines is the four miles of Cross Country course and more than 30 fences, visitors can get close to the action on the Saturday. >> 25

After a number of years managing the Harrods concession, followed by three years running the business in Ireland, James has been established as Marketing Director for most of the last decade specifically focusing on the development of the Boodles brand and the strategic decisions behind the growth of the business. Tickets to the Business Brunch are priced at £90 and include entry to the Business Brunch, priority parking and admission to Land Rover Burghley on Friday 6th September. n To reserve your place, please email jo@burghley-horse.co.uk.

FLY FISHING

FLY MUST

Is there a chap with a better tan in the whole of Rutland? We suspect not... and a golden hue is just one of the advantages to be gained from a day spent on the reservoir with Rob Waddington, the area’s keenest advocate of the simple pleasure of fly fishing... Words: Laurin Dempsey.

What’s the old saying? ‘Do a job you love and you’ll never go to work again.’ Well, Rob Waddington would go along with that. “Fly fishing,” he says, “has been a passion ever since I was a boy. I’m lucky to have a profession that I love so much.” The fisherman can usually be found bobbing up on the relatively calm waters of the reservoir, topping up his very impressive tan. He’s an honorary native, having lived in Rutland since 1994 and endured a range of rather more prosaic careers before getting fed up of the daily grind and instead opted to turn his back on the rat race to pursue fish instead. Now, he spends his days in a beautiful part of a beautiful county doing something he vastly prefers to an interminable desk job with paperwork and strip lighting.

It could all have been so different though. Originally born in Bradford, Rob has been a musician, too, playing the drums with New Model Army from 1980 to 1982 the punk rock antithesis to those floppy haired new romantics! He then worked in product design within the clothing and accessories sector with a manufacturing company supplying bags and footwear to M& S, Next and other well known high street retailers.

It was then in 1994 that he moved to Rutland having become a director of key accounts for manufacturing firm Arnold Wills Group in Uppingham - which first involved travelling the world - and latterly meant discovering the joys of Rutland’s enormous pond.

Having enjoyed fishing as a young lad on local ponds, canals and rivers with friends, Rob realised he could turn his hobby into a career and parted with Arnold Wills to take a course in order to gain a qualification to teach fly fishing. Starting small in 2003 - just himself, a rowing boat and a lot of hard work - he established ‘Rutland Fly Fishing Adventures’ and is now a fully qualified, award winning and fully insured coach in trout and salmon fly fishing.

Rob is a level two licensed coach and has the only government recognised sports coach qualification issued through the Angling Trust. Rob is also an active member of the Game Angling Instructors Association (GAIA), Salmon & Trout Association, an Orvis endorsed guide, a SONIK world team member and approved instructor with fly fishing tackle supplier Fishtec. >> 30

FLY FISHING

“The basis of fly fishing is that we imitate the food items which the trout are feeding on (by using intricately tied artificial flies, itself an art rather than using ‘real bait’) then find out where they are, what they are feeding on and try to fool them with our fly...” >> Spotting the opportunity to skive off in the sunshine for a couple of hours and top up our tan on Rutland Water, we caught up with Rob before another one of his overseas trips.

For the uninitiated, fly fishing is defined as the sport of fishing using a rod and an artificial fly as bait. The main difference between fly fishing and conventional - spin or bait - fishing is that whilst fly fishing utilises the weight of the line to carry the hook through the air, in spin and bait fishing, it’s the weight of the lure or sinker at the end of the monofilament or braided line which gives casting distance. “Part of the skill in fly fishing is to accurately imitate the food items the fish - trout in this case - are feeding on, using intricately tied artificial flies, the creation of which is in itself an art.” And then, of course, there’s the cast. Casting is simultaneously the most active and delicate part of fishing, casting the line well. The fly itself doesn’t weigh anything so the trick is to use the rod to cast the line to present the fly to trout. Of course it is not as easy as it seems to look… that is why it is called ‘fishing’ and not ‘catching.’ “Fish are wild animals after all, so they don’t make it easy for us,” points out Rob, with the sort of gentle, effortlessly imparted philosophical wisdom you’d expect from a chap whose time in a rowing boat affords him the opportunity to contemplate at leisure the vast intricacies abounding life and fishing. “The greater the challenge, the better the reward,” he says. “But the good thing about fly fishing is that you can catch virtually any fish as long as you imitate its food with a type of fly.”

A keen advocate of teaching others to discover the pleasure of fly fishing, Rob offers his Ultimate Fly Fishing Day which, like all good days, begins with tea and cakes. Rob operates from his fishing lodge on a little peninsular on the North Shore of the reservoir. From there, he also operates his Lakeside Bed and Breakfast which, we’re assured, offers the one of the best breakfasts in the county. The near famous ‘Barnsdale Breakfast’ incorporating his cold-cured oak smoked trout and scrambled eggs. “We then go into the fishing cabin, an idyllic haven with fishing memorabilia and masses of fishing pictures,” says Rob.

“It’s a chance to teach everything from casting, to what tackle and flies to use. I take some eager guests outside to practice casting with a fly rod before going aboard a motor boat to fish on what I reckon is the UK’s greatest trout fishing stillwater. They usually have the day of their lives!”

“A highlight for me is when a newcomer catches their first fish on the fly... which, luckily happens a lot! Young people are especially keen and together we can produce memories that last forever.” “We also want to see more youngsters coming into fly fishing. Most people start off fishing for carp and other coarse fish which can be a bit easier to begin with, then come into fly fishing later, when you can appreciate the pleasures to be had catching big fish with no weights, or gears involved.”

“I’m guiding and coaching far more ladies these days. It is great to see both women and children of all ages enjoying the outdoors because fishing used to be quite male-centric. Fortunately, there are some excellent women’s fly fishing teams and there’s more interest from woman than ever before.” “Rutland is seen as one of the best fly fishing lakes in the country however not necessarily the easiest. It’s famous for the quality of it’s trout, predatory pike and zander but it’s the former that we’re really interested in. The water produces some really beautiful, powerful - and tasty - fish.”

“I also offer fly fishing trips for the pure enjoyment and corporate events and team building days. I’m also an Orvis endorsed fly fishing guide and help more experienced anglers too, as it takes many years to know how to handle Rutland Water and get the best from it.” Rob’s own passion is fly fishing for Tarpon - a rather violent Pacific fish between a metre and two metres long - in the clear salt water of the Caribbean.

“Fishing is an obsession I can’t get enough of,” says Rob. “I love fishing for Atlantic Salmon and have been visiting Northern Russia’s Kola Peninsula in the Arctic Circle for many years. Catching a big salmon on a fly from a big river is about as exciting as it gets... but nothing quite beats the calmness and scenery of Rutland!” n

n Do you fancy a new challenge? Looking for an experience not to forget? See for yourself what fly fishing is all about by visiting Rob and undertaking a trip through Rutland Fly Fishing Adventures. See www.rutlandwaterflyfishing.co.uk or stay at Lakeside Bed & Breakfast www.thelodgebarnsdale.co.uk. 32

Truly Independent Financial Planning • Efficient Portfolio’s Charlie Reading • Author of The Dream Retirement

It’s Time to Start inking SMART Growing and protecting your estate for the benefit of your loved ones is a key aim of a lot of our clients. Working together, we help to formulate strategies that will provide your family with financial security and freedom for the rest of their lives. But are you confident that they will do the same for the generations to come? Or even worse, will they squander the money because they don’t know how to look after it?

O

One Of my bug-bears with education is the lack of focus on ‘real life skills’. Anyone who has gone through the British education system will have sat through hours of quadratic equations, Shakespearean quotes and learning how to decipher an igneous rock from its sedimentary counterpart, but how useful were these lessons?

e book is usually sold for £9.99, but I feel so passionately about sharing this knowledge with the younger generations, I’m going to be generous and give away electronic versions of this book for free! Whether you chose to give the book to your children, grandchildren, friends, or even read it yourself, SMART Money could be the most beneficial gift you give. It isn’t a long book, and it is easily digestible for a younger less financially savvy reader, so we think they, and you, will enjoy it.

Yes, some of your teachings may have helped you land your dream job, but will knowing the dates of the Stuart Kings and Queens help you manage your finances? I left an amazing school not having even heard of a pension, a mortgage or a credit card, and yet don’t we call encounter them in our lives? I am a firm believer that schools should be educating children on the real ‘truths’ of life: why it’s important to save money, how to afford your first home and how to reduce the risk you take with your money. It’s something that I’m fanatical about, so much so that I’ve written a book on the topic. In September 2017, ‘SMART Money: How to Create Financial Freedom’ was published. Written for those just starting out on their financial journey, this book empowers people to become financially free enough to stop work and live out their hopes and dreams. For younger generations, or for anyone who is closer to the start of their financial journey, ‘SMART Money’ teaches you how to develop a ‘savings psychology’, so that you can fill your life with what you love and gives you all of the tools you need to build, manage and protect your wealth. If you are looking to start or improve your saving for the future

I hope everyone enjoys it and I look forward to hearing your feedback and stories about how it’s helped to educate those around you.

Elton John & The Rocket Band

IF YOU’RE A FAN OF CROCODILE ROCK OR IF SATURDAY NIGHT’S ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING, YOU’LL LOVE THIS GLORIOUS TRIBUTE... STAMFORD

FRIDAY 13th SEPTEMBER

NO1 ELTON AT STAMFORD CORN EXCHANGE

Introducing the Number One Elton tribute on the circuit today. Some tribute artists look like their idol, some sound like their idol but this Elton does both! Close your eyes and you won’t believe your ears, open your eyes and you won't believe them either! You simply won’t find a closer tribute to Sir Elton John, nor one endorsed by so many so close to the man himself, as this set of Elton’s greats hits will prove.

Your Song, Candle in the Wind, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Sacrifice and Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, all appear on the set list, along with Crocodile Rock, I’m Still Standing and Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting. Sir Elton Hercules John has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin since 1967; they have collaborated on more than 30 albums. Elton has sold more than 300 million records, making him one of the world’s best-selling music artists, and the most flamboyant. In 2000 John admitted to spending £30 million in just

under two years—an average of £1.5 million a month, including £293,000 on flowers alone.

Once famous for his flashy clothes and string of hit records, English rock musician Elton John has more recently become a humanitarian and has sold off much of his property interests, flashy cars and wardrobe in favour of a slightly more tame lifestyle. Having married David Furnish in 2012, the two have become fathers to Elijah and Zachary. n Tickets £20, doors 7.30pm. Stamford Corn Exchange, Broad Street, Stamford, Lincs, PE9 1PX. THE VITRUVIAN

Established in 2003, the Vitruvian started from humble beginnings and less than 250 starters in its first year.

Since then the Vitruvian has grown into one of the most respected and iconic races on the UK calendar.

With a two lap 1900m swim in front of highly enthusiastic crowds the race starts as it means to go on and the double lap bike course covering 85km in total is not for the faint hearted. With the 21km run to finish it off the Vitruvian is a true test of endurance.

With similar distance races often referred to as half Ironman or middle distance it can be misleading to equate the Vitruvian to other events. There is nothing half or middling about the Vitruvian. This is a full on triathlon and only if you finish it you can call yourself a Vitruvian.

n Vitruvian takes place at Rutland Water. For more information see www.pacesetterevents.com.

THE ENGINE YARD

REVOLUTIONS is month we’re celebrating the first anniversary of one of the area’s success stories as Her Grace Emma Manners, the Duchess of Rutland, reflects on the first year of trading for her £2.5m Engine Yard development. We join the Duchess to crack the Champagne corks, but first, she has some washing up to finish... Words & Images: Rob Davis.

Time flies when you’re having fun… or when you’re stuck in the kitchen. Just ask the Duchess of Rutland, Emma Manners. For the past 12 months she’s done both. It’s been great fun, she says, ensuring that the new £2.5m artisan shopping village on the Belvoir Castle estate has got up to speed, although she’s had to work rather hard to make the project a success, even donning a pair of rubber gloves and getting stuck into the washing up. “It’s a really personal project,” says the Duchess. “Every single thing in the Engine Yard I have hand-held. Every piece of decoration or lighting, every fabric I’ve chosen carefully, so it’s been a real labour of love.” The 15,000 acre estate of Belvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Manners family and the present Duke and Duchess of Rutland have been incumbent since 1999. Adjacent to the Grade I listed 450ft tall castle, which dates back to 1799, is The Engine Yard.

This collection of former workshops once housed a cutting edge 20-ton beam engine to pump water from Holwell Spring in Woolsthorpe to supply the castle with fresh water. The technology soon fell into redundancy, the site itself became scruffy.

Enter the Duchess with her characteristic big ideas to transform the site and in 2014 the area was cleared as part of a £2.5m restoration project designed to create a local community centre – a sort of new village for the Vale of Belvoir when traditional villages and market towns are ailing amid out of town superstores.

“Our idea at the Engine Yard is that it’s the people’s yard. I want it to be inclusive, to be for the community and I want to know what people want to see here. I want the whole community to be able to come here, relax and enjoy the space.” >> Opposite: The Engine Yard is a smart shopping village in the Vale of Belvoir. There are a dozen retailers, including a health & beauty specialist, restaurant and a new gin bar. Inset: The development has cost £2.5m and has been created adjacent to the Duke & Duchess of Rutland’s 15,000 acre Belvoir Castle estate in the area which used to house the estate’s steam engine, used to pump water to the Castle.

Three to See at The Engine Yard

n Festival of Game, Aug 31st to Sept 1st: To celebrate the anniversary of the Engine Yard launch, The Engine Yard hosts the very best of British Game recipes from Celebrity Chefs, country stall holders, brilliant performers, delicious food & drink and not forgetting family fun and entertainment for little ones.

>> “With the loss of villages comes the loss of communities; neighbours. I’m hoping that everyone here will help to create a community to replace those lose villages. Creating a village community for Belvoir will take it back to about how it was three or hundred years ago when there was an ancient market site here.”

“Of all the jobs I’ve done getting the site up and running the best one I’ve done is washing up at The Fuel Tank! I love it. I’m the best washer-upper they’ve got… honestly. You can ask Chef Karen! Everyone mucks in, there’s no hierarchy, this is everyone’s Yard!”

The site opened in September last year with five or six retail units, and now there are in excess of 12. Celebrating the development’s first anniversary of the site is a Festival of Game event which runs on 31st August and 1st September.

A year on, and with the recent launch of The Balloon Bar, Belvoir Castle’s Engine Yard is now a smart shopping destination for an impromptu Saturday afternoon sortie. With plenty of shopping for the family, for the home and for the garden, plus several options for dining and enjoying a drink, it’s easy to see why the Duchess is proud of what the team has created.

n Makers’ Market: Every third Sunday of the month, visit the Engine Yard to enjoy a handpicked selection of artisan food producers, allowing visitors to embrace the best of local food and drink producers, artisans, handcrafters as well as the occasional street food vendors and entertainers!

“The Engine Yard has come 180 degrees in a year. It’s building a lovely community with loyal customers who come to meet for a coffee, catch up with friends or work online.”

“There’s lots more happening with the opening of the Balloon Bar and a busy events calendar but there’s still plenty of space and scope for further development. Anyone approaching me with good business strategy or their own brand that they wish to develop, we still have units that we are looking at growing.” n

Right: The site features The Fuel Tank pictured on our opening page, and below it the new Balloon Bar, specialising in artisan gin. The Idle Mole, meanwhile, is an artisan retailer with lots of gifts for home and garden. It’s just one of a dozen or so places for an enjoyable day of shopping.

n Christmas at the Engine Yard: Santa is making a special visit to the Engine Yard again at the beautiful Winter Wonderland. Wrap up warm, enjoy a treat at The Fuel Tank and pick up a few last-minute Christmas gifts at the same time. Visitors looking for inspiration for that special Christmas gift can also browse the Christmas Market. Enjoy Breakfast with Santa too, with tickets available soon.

SCHOOLS & COLLEGES

Schools & Colleges

Peterborough School

Laxton Junior School

The Peterborough School is the City’s only independent day school for boys and girls from Nursery to Sixth Form.

Laxton Junior School is more than just a school: it is an engaging and inspiring experience that fosters the confidence and resilience children need to develop in the most fantastic ways across and beyond the curriculum. Children and their learning, care and happiness are central to all that happens at Laxton Junior School and, as a result, they bound into school every day excited to interact with the multitude of opportunities available.

“Modern outlook and traditional values...”

Small class sizes are key to us unlocking every child’s potential academically and vital soft skills are developed by our extended curriculum.

Our ‘Outstanding’ Nursery gives children the best possible start in excellent facilities, which include three garden areas as well as access to the school’s sports hall, fields, IT suite and auditorium. Pupils are happy and safe in our Prep, Senior School and Sixth Form. We aim to develop a passion for learning in all areas and success is celebrated throughout. Our consistently strong A Level results show high 46

value-added scores, meaning children do better here because of the excellent teaching and high levels of individual attention.

Our new Library and Sixth Form Centre, opened last September, have provided Senior pupils with high-tech and comfortable environments for studying and socialising.

The Peterborough School was founded in 1895 and is a member of the Woodard group of schools, which is the largest collection of Church of England schools in England and Wales and one of the principal educational charities in the UK.

n Visitors are very welcome to look around our productive, friendly and happy school during our Open Days or by appointment. Tel: 01733 343357, email: office@tpsch.co.uk, thepeterboroughschool.co.uk.

“Learning is at the centre of all that we do...”

In fact, some of the children were asked what they considered to be so special and magical about the Laxton Junior School experience and this is how they captured it: Sophie, in Reception, said: “I like to play outside on the grass best because I can play catch with my friends”; whereas Jack, in Year 3, spoke of the “kind and helpful teachers; they listen to what we say and show us how to get better.”

Henry, in Year 4, explained that “it’s great how boys and girls can play every sport at LJS; boys can play rounders and girls can play cricket, I’m really looking forward to this exciting opportunity next term”; whilst, for Gabriella, in Year 6, “having a suggestion box where we put our ideas for the School Council is something I really enjoy; I like that we have a voice and can help make our school a better place.”

n If you would like to find out more about Laxton Junior School, you are more than welcome to organise a meeting and a tour with the Head, Mr Sam Robertson, who would be delighted to introduce you to some amazing children and give you an insight into how the School designs an individually tailored experience around them; this can be organised through Mrs Lesley Taylor, the Registrar, by calling 01832 277159 or email lat@laxtonjunior.org.uk.

Copthill School, Stamford

Oakham School, Oakham

Fifty Years ago this year, around a kitchen table at a farm just outside Uffington, Copthill School was born.

Oakham School’s new Headmaster, Henry Price, starts School this September, following Nigel Lashbrook’s retirement.

“Curiosity, excitement & desire for 50 years!”

It has now grown into a thriving independent school for children aged two to 11 years old on a 300 acre site that includes a forest school, high-tech classrooms, superb sport facilities and even a farm. Copthill School has been celebrating its milestone with a number of events for children, parents present and past and old Copthillians.

The school has always prided itself on offering pupils an education that focuses on learning, building confidence, developing character and preparing the children for their next steps. It also encourages parents to get involved in school life too. This family orientated ethos has underpinned Copthill’s success.

“The development and growth of the school over the last half-century is remarkable,” says principal Jonathan Teesdale, whose mother Anne founded Copthill. Copthill school are dedicated to allowing children to flourish into happy, confident, rounded individuals who are able to discover and develop their talents. One of the great things about Copthill has always been that children get high quality teaching and a fabulous campus in which to learn, whether it’s indoors or outdoors.” Copthill will be hosting an informal Open Morning on Thursday 3rd October from 9.00am - 11.00am.

n Tel: 01780757506 or visit www.copthill.com for more information.

“A new school year and a new Headmaster!”

Henry studied Classics at New College, Oxford University, and has previously taught at Rugby School and Sherborne School.

Henry moves to Oakham following four years of Headship at Wellington School in Somerset, which like Oakham, is a co-educational day and boarding school with a strong emphasis on the total curriculum. He joins Oakham at an exciting time, when the Lower School (for pupils aged 10+) enters its second year of developing and implementing the internationally celebrated IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP).

The IB MYP is much more than just a set of subjects: it is a framework for learning that helps pupils to develop the essential knowledge, aptitude and skills they will need to thrive and succeed in the world of 2030 and beyond. Pupils are now able to benefit from this highly regarded approach to learning before they study for their GCSEs.

To meet with Oakham’s new Headmaster and to learn how the IB MYP would offer your child the very best start to their senior school education, join one of our Open Mornings.

n Contact Admissions on 01572 758758 to book onto one of our Lower School Open Mornings on Saturday 14 September or Saturday 5 October. Keep up to date with all of Oakham’s news at www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk , or follow us on Twitter @OakhamSch. 47

Little Angels Uppingham

Brooke Priory School

Little Angels provides flexible childcare solution for children aged six weeks to 11 years old. Celebrating 10 years in 2020, the nursery has 16 members of staff, and a total of 170 children on the register - thankfully not all requiring childcare at the same time!

Brooke Priory School is Rutland’s outstanding co-educational Preparatory School for children aged from 2+ to 11 years.

“A flexible childcare solution for busy families!”

The result is reliable, professional childcare with degree-level practitioners who are all invested in the care of your child, whether you’re seeking before or after school care, full-time baby or preschool childcare.

Prices are fully inclusive of freshly cooked meals, snacks and drinks. If fact, in Little Angels most recent customer satisfaction survey 100% of respondents said the food was exceptional. The nursery is open from 7.30am to 6pm for 51 weeks of the year 48

(excluding bank holidays), and offers the flexible solution to the working demands on parents than modern life dictates. Five-hour flexi sessions allow you to choose a start time that works to meet you and your child’s needs.

In December 2018 the Ofsted Inspector said of the nursery: “Children are confident in the setting. They settle quickly on arrival, seeking out their friends or member of staff if needed. Children are enthusiastic, curious and are learning good skills to help them move on. The youngest children respond to staff ’s interaction with smiles and sounds, and some are beginning to use words. Staff are good at making use of spontaneous opportunities to help children learn.”

n For more information call 01572 823680 or see www.uppinghamnursery.co.uk.

“An enviable reputation in the East Midlands...”

The facilities for the Nursery and Pre-School children are ‘second to none’ and the ‘continuous provision’ ensures that learning is exciting and challenging whilst at the same time developing the children’s confidence and independence. Transition into Reception (Kindergarten at Brooke Priory) is seamless as the children work and play alongside the children in the main school.

Small classes, excellent facilities and inspirational teaching in a purpose-built school ensure that children perform consistently well and are able to progress to the best

Independent Schools, or Grammar Schools, at the end of Year 6 (11+).

Exciting initiatives, such as accelerated reading using the facilities of the new state of the art Resources Centre, has transformed the approach to reading and the results are evident throughout the school. The curriculum is further enriched by residential trips (Years three to six) and educational trips and visitors for all bring topics ‘to life.’ In addition, opportunities in Sport and the Performing & Creative Arts with specialist teachers are inclusive and the work on display throughout the school is a celebration of the excellence achieved by the children.

Stoneygate School, Leicester

“Co-educational school for pupils from four-16!”

Originally founded in 1856, Stoneygate School is an independent day school for children aged four to 16 years, and is also a member of the Leicester’s Grammar School Trust in the city. Stoneygate’s beautiful older buildings stand alongside modern science labs and sports facilities.

“We value books and technology; we respect the unique culture of Stoneygate, cultivated since the nineteenth century, yet seek to prepare our pupils for the modern world.”

Within glorious surroundings Stoneygate possess a deep and genuine commitment to providing a first-class education, one through which pupils develop a passion for learning, a capacity for independent thought and an appreciation

of academic rigor. Yet there is much more to Stoneygate than academic curriculum. Small class sizes mean close attention to suit the needs of all pupils and space to learn and grow on the forty-acre campus. Stoneygate’s close-knit community is one in which everyone is known as an individual, yet one where everyone plays their part.

This motto enable pupils to field successful sports teams, play together in orchestras and stage drama productions.

n Next open morning will take place on Saturday 26th October, 9.30am -12.30pm or personal tours can be arranged throughout the school year by contacting Julia Whittle, in the admissions office on 0116 259 2282. You can also visit www.stoneygateschool.co.uk.

Stamford Academy

“Passionate about language-learning...”

Stamford Academy was founded in 2005 as a language school specialising in teaching English to international students. Throughout the year, we offer English language, culture and exam short courses to students from around the world, most of whom stay with carefully selected families within Stamford.

In recent years, the Academy has expanded its offering to include beginner and intermediate level classes for UK-based students in up to 10 different languages including Italian, French and Arabic.

We regularly provide One-toOne and small group tuition for A-level and GCSE students as well as private clients looking for bespoke classes tailored to a range of settings; from preparing for business meetings and holidays through to moving overseas in retirement. Everyone at the Academy is

passionate about languagelearning, but we understand why many adults find the idea of grappling with a new language or re-engaging with an old one, a daunting prospect. Age and fluency should never be considered barriers to language acquisition. As a family-owned and run school, we understand the need for a welcoming setting, so we keep our classes small (no more than 10), informal, but professional. Tutors often bring a slice of culture (and food!) into the classroom to share with students. In September, the Academy will be holding an hour-long taster session in several languages at beginner level for new students to try for free.

n For more information on this or any of Stamford Academy’s courses see www.stamfordacademy.co.uk or call the school on 01780 489400. 49

Stamford Welland Academy

Stamford Endowed Schools

Stamford Welland Academy is a vibrant and exciting place to study. It combines a fantastic educational offer with a wealth of enrichment opportunities via their parallel curriculum. It benefits from being part of the wider Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT), and since joining the trust in 2014, the school has gone from strength to strength. In September 2019, the school is set to be oversubscribed in year 7 once again and this is a reflection of the superb reputation the school has built over the last few years.

The Stamford Endowed Schools put great importance in placing the individual pupil at its very core. At Stamford, each pupil’s distinct talents are recognised, whilst independence of thought and intellectual curiosity is nurtured via a vast array of academic and co-curricular activities.

“Pupils really do benefit from a rounded education ...”

The school’s Headteacher, Vicky Lloyd had this to say about SWA; ‘These are exciting times for Stamford Welland Academy. We are growing rapidly in terms of pupil numbers, yet we still retain the fantastic community feel that we pride ourselves on. A huge part of this is the excellent pastoral care and

52

support that we offer through our house system which ensures pupils feel individually cared for and valued. Combined with our high academic standards, Stamford Welland Pupils really do benefit from a rounded education which prepares them wonderfully for life beyond school. We are passionate about the fact that regardless of ability or background, all students flourish at SWA.’ The school has also recently been granted permission to create a 6th form and this is a project they will be working on, alongside other partners within Stamford, over the next couple of years. This will further embed Stamford Welland as the school of choice in Stamford and the surrounding area.

“A tailored student experience in three schools...”

At SES, the three independent schools work together to provide a first-class education to pupils aged 3 to 18. Structured as a ‘diamond,’ boys and girls are taught together at the co-ed nursery and junior school before splitting to the respective boys and girls’ senior schools until the age of 16. This allows for a more tailored and personalised education at every level, either as day pupils or as boarders, before coming back together in a joint sixth form. This model of ‘single-gender academic

and mixed co-curricular’ provides the best of all worlds.

The bus service, operating across Lincolnshire, Rutland and Cambridgeshire, makes the schools easily accessible across the region. Alternatively, weekly and full boarding options are also popular options. The Stamford Endowed Schools, dating back to 1532, together with their extended communities provide an unusually broad range of opportunities to inspire pupils, encourage curiosity and instil a love of learning. The Schools take pride in helping to develop well-rounded individuals who achieve their full potential. Independent minds are at the very heart of the three Schools, preparing Stamfordians for the 21st Century Boardroom. n Call 01780 750311 or visit www.ses.lincs.sch.uk/visitingus to arrange a tour of the schools.

LITTLE ANGELS

flexible childcare that’s perfect for your Little Angels As any working parent in Rutland or Stamford knows, having flexible, reliable childcare is essential for family life. Lucy Lewin is making life easier for busy mums & dads...

It’s always nice to celebrate a birthday. And 10 is a big milestone. Uppingham nursery and preschool Little Angels will be celebrating a decade of providing reliable, high quality childcare in 2020. Lucy Lewin’s nursery currently has over 170 children currently on the nursery’s register thankfully not all of them require childcare at the same time - but with 16 employees, Lucy and her team have proven the necessity of providing busy mums and dads with early years care they can always depend on.

“I worked in finance and in sales prior to having children and latterly working as a life coach, for Slimming World and as a bookkeeper. Only when you have youngsters do you realise just how important it is to be able to know your little ones are cared for whilst you juggle family life and a career,” says Lucy.

“Few people work in Uppingham itself, so our families tend to commute to and from Leicester, Peterborough, Oakham and Corby - each of which we’re equidistant to.”

“I had a bit of time between jobs and with a young child, I thought I could look after youngsters for friends. Announcing my intention, I had nine children belonging to friends and family within a couple of days. There was obviously a need, so I registered as a childminder and a year later found some dedicated premises in a former theatre on Uppingham’s Ayston Road... that was 10 years ago!”

“When we set up the place we decorated it, we obtained BA (Hons) degrees in Early Childhood Studies, and put heart and soul into the business, having 85 children on our register after just a couple of years. Ofsted have rated us as ‘good,’ and I become an Associate Trainer for the Day Nursery Association delivering training on issues like the Ofsted framework and safeguarding.”

“I advised the All Party Parliamentary Group on early years policy and I’ve taken part in the LGA Peer Challenge for looking at Early Years communication... in my spare time I’m also a town councillor so I really understand the challenges local families experience around Uppingham.”

“My team are fabulous and I put that down to ongoing professional development, and graduate led people who are encouraged to reflect on their practice for continual self-improvement.”

“As well as the usual day nursery provision we provide flexible after school care and holiday clubs. In the case of the latter we don’t just let children sit in front of tablets - we enjoy dog walks, barbecues, paddle boarding, pamper days, and when we do the after-school pickup, we stop at a local coffee shop for a drink and a slice of cake.” “Keeping children stimulated, ensuring they have fun is what a good pre-school or holiday club should do. A recent compliment from a mum was that the children were sad to go home after a day with us, which for us was lovely feedback!” n

Find Out More: Little Angels is based at Ayston House, 4-5 Ayston Rd, Uppingham, Oakham LE15 9RL. Call 01572 823680 or see www.uppinghamnursery.co.uk for more information about the nursery’s flexible childcare. 56

ORTON HALL LOSE YOUR HEAD OVER QUALITY DINING AT

You can dine like a king or queen this month at Huntly Restaurant in Orton Hall, located in the Peterborough suburb of Orton Longueville. Elegant, beautifully situated and close to some stunning walks and scenery, it’s a perfect Autumn recommendation... Words & Images: Rob Davis.

meet the CHEF

Mary, Queen of Scots, lost her head at Oundle’s Fotheringhay Castle. Part of that building was ‘reclaimed’ (pilfered) to create the fabric of Orton Hall in the leafy, posh suburb of the city of Peterborough’s Orton Longueville. The arched stone doorway that Mary walked through prior to joining the great majority is pretty low and now has a sign above saying, without irony, ‘mind your head,’ proving conclusively that sometimes it’s a good idea to take good advice… so in that very same spirit, we’ve some good advice for you. Visit this month’s wonderful restaurant. Located in one of Peterborough’s six Orton villages, the hotel is one of a trio in the Abacus Hotel group, alongside Knights Hill in Kings Lynn and the enigmatically named Le Strange Arms in the North Norfolk town of Old Hunstanton. It’s set in 20 acres of mature and lovely parkland, and dates back to the 17th century,

“THE HUNTLY RESTAURANT CONCENTRATES ON SMART DINING IN AN EQUALLY SMART ENVIRONMENT...”

with later additions in 1835. It remained in the family of the Marquess of Huntly, George Gordon – synonymous with the Gordon’s Gin brand – until financial whoopsies in the 1880s, rambling estates elsewhere in the UK and the usual trials and tribulations of familial succession meant it was less beloved by the family, who offloaded it in 1954, whereupon it became a girls’ school.

Abacus Hotels purchased it back in 1990, refurbished it and subsequently opened for business in 1991. The country house hotel now has 70 bedrooms, eight conference or private dining rooms, a spa and an adjacent pub, the Ramblewood Inn. The latter is open day and night, offering steaks; burgers; sausage ‘n’ mash et al. That leaves the Huntly Restaurant in the hotel itself to concentrate on smarter, >>

Food History: From Hull, and having worked across the UK, Kevin settled at Orton Hall 20 years ago. Food Philosophy: “Good honest food that’s also beautifully presented.” Food Heaven: “I enjoy fish. The fresher the better, it’s just so versatile!” Food Hell: “Marmite. They do say you love it or hate it!” n

>> more formal dining, during evening service only, from 6pm-9pm, seven days. There are six pan-rattlers, working alongside Head Chef Kevin Wood, a veteran of Orton Hall, having been in post for 20 years. His philosophy is admirably simple; good ingredients, a key ingredient that’s allowed to do its job and smart presentation.

Kevin’s menu is admirably simple too; a couple of pre-starters; eight starters; 10 main courses; seven desserts plus a local cheese option. No specials, tasting menus, just decent choice and some appealing dishes. It’s all very well priced, too.

OPEN FOR FOOD Lunch: 12 noon to 2pm, Monday - Saturday.

Dinner: Seven days, 6pm to 9pm.

Sunday Lunch: 12 noon to 3pm.

on the MENU FROM ORTON HALL’S HUNTLY RESTAURANT À LA CARTE MENU Starters

Ham hock and vegetable terrine, mustard powder mayonnaise and balsamic gel £6.75.

Oak smoked salmon, pickled beetroot, horseradish cream keta and pea shoots £7.75. Main Course

Baked North Sea cod, smoked haddock and pea sauce with parsley mash £18.25.

Honey glazed belly pork, warm pickled vegetables and Cajun buttered potatoes £17.95. For those who love a bit of crenellation on their hotels – and who doesn’t – the building won’t disappoint. There’s an eclectic mishmash of different ages of stones, battlements, plus a round tower and fancy stained glass windows all working together to give the building a grand old feel.

Inside the hotel, soaring ceilings, elaborate carved wood and a proper old school country mansion look all give the place a smart, formal, traditional feel, a nice antidote to the slew of ‘Farrow & Ballsed-up’ country pubs that pervade the city’s surrounding villages. Local suppliers include R&P Meats who source local beef and Norfolk pork, fish comes from Coles of King’s Lynn - near Orton Hall’s sister hotels - and there’s veg from a local supplier, Barsby’s, as well. Bread is made in house, desserts, ice creams and sorbets are, too. Even the petit fours served with coffee are made by the team.

Presentation of each dish is stunning and each dish is a class act of technical chefcraft as well as creativity.

If you need an additional incentive to the very high quality of dining on offer, consider the possibility of a spa day at the hotel with an overnight stay, or just spend time at Peterborough’s Ferry Meadows, just two minutes down the road, for nature, walks, cycle rides, or a trip on Nene Valley’s steam trains. That’s in addition to Peterborough’s wealth of events at the East of England Arena, again just five minutes from the city.

HOMES & INTERIORS

THE BOX THINKING OUTSIDE of

‘Upside down living’ makes sense in a lot of ways for a number of reasons. Having gained more popularity in recent years, we find out how ‘topsy turvy’ living works at Gallery House, Ashwell Hall Stables... Words: Laurin Dempsey. Images: Rebecca Goddard Photography.

67

Rutland Pride SEPT 206.qxp 29/07/2019 13:55 Page 68

When you consider the layout of a family home, conventionally, the main living areas and kitchen are located downstairs with the bedrooms upstairs. Not in the case of this month’s ‘upside down’ house though.

Gallery House has been owned for 19 years by Georgia and her husband Clive, along with their two children (now aged 21 and 18). Upside down living - reverse living as it’s also termed - has been the ‘norm’ for this family. “It’s a logical way to live in the space provided,” she says. The property is Grade II listed, made of local stone and Collyweston slate and is a stable block conversion retaining many original features, such as the saddle racks hanging on the wall in the corridor, exposed brickwork and the foaling box windows that look onto each of the three ground floor bedrooms. The property sits within the former grounds of Ashwell Hall dating back to 1879, then being converted in 2000 by Enterprise Heritage Developments.

It’s situated down a long gravel driveway and is now one of just nine properties within the development.

“You automatically feel comfortable at The Stables. There was only one previous owner of Gallery House for eight months before us, so this really has been our own space to call home.”

The property’s entrance hall gives access to the entire ground floor with three double bedrooms, a family bathroom and a double garage that has been converted to a studio by Georgia and the family. You will then welcomed by an impressive galleried landing on the first floor giving access to open plan living with a reception room, kitchen, master bedroom and further office space. Georgia has even removed doors from the upper level to help with this effect. Further original features are also highlighted with exposed timberwork and trusses of the roof structure which highlights the original and quirky nature of what was once the hay loft. On the subject of space, there’s also an Main/Left: Upstairs there are soaring ceilings providing and abundance of light, downstairs an industrial vibe.

68

abundance outdoors with a quarter of an acre of low maintenance gardens to the front of the property, suitable for animal lovers and young children, as tried and tested by the family’s rescue greyhounds and the many foster children that have come and gone. Natural light really does showcase this property and one of the reasons this way of living works so well.

Now that Georgia’s two children have ‘flown the nest’ it’s time for a new chapter in the couple’s life, and the two are looking for a rural property with lots more land so that Georgia can start an eco tree-house business. With the family now looking for some more non-conformists to enjoy upside down living, we predict that Georgia and the family will take their reverse living style with them to their new place! n

It’s human nature to look upon shiny new things with a sense of awe and wonder. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the few wealthy and literate folk to possess books would read of Marco Polo’s travels to the orient and then Vasco da Gama’s sea route to India a century or so later. Gradually, westerners became aware of an exotic new world of spices, rich silks and new philosophies.

is month’s front covers have been inspired by our affection for Chinoiserie, a trend for 2020 homes. With improvements in digital printing techniques, creating bold colours, detailed patterns and introducing oriental influences into your home is easier than ever... Words: Rob Davis.

It’s little wonder, then, that this fascination with the perceived Eastern aesthetic endured and evolved - with the help of Baroque-era Rococo - into a style that pastiched the oriental look, a style we know today as Chinoiserie. Chinese Influences...

Chinois - literally Chinese in French - was popularised in the 17th and 18th centuries, popularised by Balzac and a Georgian fascination with drinking tea, curating collections of porcelain, creating manufactured imitations of lacquered oriental furniture and blending the style with the look of a traditional English country home. Chinoiserie enjoyed yet another renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s, with William Morris’s

similarly ‘busy’ wallpaper prints influencing a resurgence shortly after his death in 1896. And so, here we are again, with yet another resurgence of the look predicated, we think, by a move away from the neutrality of grey and taupe rooms, and a desire to once again introduce a little colour into our homes... as well as recent technological developments. Digital printing, has enabled wallcovering designers to efficiently replicate the handpainted look of those Chinoiserie wallpapers and fabrics as well as friezes, though without the necessity of hand-painting them, which made them the sole preserve of the wealthy. Recreating Chinoiserie...

One of the style’s most successful and talented advocates is Allyson McDermott. The former head of Sotheby’s Conservation Studio, Advisor to the National Trust and Chair of the Historic Interiors Group, Allyson has spent a lifetime conserving original historic wallpapers and researching materials and techniques, rediscovering century-old processes including woodblock printing, varnishing, gilding, embossing, >> 75

Allyson has studied the area’s Belvoir Castle, and sought permission from Her Grace the Duchess of Rutland to reproduce the castle’s Chinese wallpapers and silk designs including Bird & Flower, seen in the King’s Suite, and Scenes from Life from the Chinese Bedroom. “It was important, we felt, to retain all the charm and subtlety of the aged originals,” says Allyson. “That ever so slightly faded, distressed and gorgeously elegant look which gives an otherwise busy pattern or gaudy colour scheme a sense of elegance.” Achieving the Look...

Digital wallcovering design enables not only repeating patterns, but larger scale friezes previously only possible with hand-painting - to be achieved. Combine these with silk weave fabrics such as Mulberry’s Meadow Silk or for a heavier, more hard-wearing fabrics, Osborne & Little’s Enchanted Gardens.

WALLS

wiTHiN THESE

is month we’re taking a peep within the walls of the four acres of formal gardens at Empingham’s Prebendal House, home to Matthew and Rebecca... Words: Laurin Dempsey. Images: Rob Davis.

Rutland Pride SEPT 206.qxp 29/07/2019 13:56 Page 88

Do dogs speak in different languages? Bark in Spanish? I’d eyed-up the perfect photo of gardener Sam Pond’s Beagle/Cairn cross, peeping around a wrought iron gate with a border of colourful delphiniums in the background. But it was no good. Despite my endeavours to wit canine-coercion, Pedro wasn’t having any of it.

NGS Opening Matthew and Rebecca open Prebendal House’s gardens for the NGS scheme each year and at other times for groups by prior arrangement.

“You have to speak Spanish to him,” said Sam and went back to tending the hedges and borders of white Macmillan roses that flank the walled garden of Empingham’s Prebendal House, leaving me to muse on whether he was pulling my leg or whether man’s best friend really is bilingual… or just stubborn. The mutt wasn’t playing ball, but the garden – and the weather – was. Rebecca and Matthew purchased Prebendal House over three years ago, undertaking a two year renovation project on both the house and garden. The garden is four acres, with a further 35 acres of pasture surrounding it.

Matthew continues to inform us that the property was once part of the Normanton Park Estate and was once an agricultural concern. From looking at previous Ordiance Survey Maps it also had an orchard area planted in the 19th century and a fish pond fed with a natural spring.

An interesting aside is the family’s belief that the 19th century author Anthony Trollope has stayed here. Two of his nieces rented the property for a short while, and Anthony mentioned Rutland and Empingham within his novels, clearly knowing his way around. “The house was built in 1688 and the aim was to re-establish an 18th century style of garden in sympathy with the property,” says Matthew.

“This is achieved by the large formal 18th century south facing walled garden which is Grade II* listed and incorporates brick lined walls made from local stone. It’s a very traditional and clever way of 88

reflecting the heat perfectly, helping to grow plants and flowers which thrive in warmer climates.

Rebecca and Matthew have made the garden child-friendly, removing a big old pond to create a sunken garden with a more modest water feature, a firepit, Japanese acers and at least ten varieties of salvias somewhat of a speciality for the garden. The walled garden features a mix of David Austin roses, cut flower beds and a vegetable patch with sweet peas. There’s a yew border adjacent to the main lawn too with myriad colours and wildflowers.

“We wanted the walled garden to look really traditional and to have a vegetable area and a market garden providing fruit and cutting flowers and a production area with glasshouses,” says Matthew.

“The formal borders surrounding the house has a topiary theme throughout with borders and pleached hedges that transition into the parkland where we’ve tried to ensure plenty of wild flowers. The intention is that there’s something of interest within the garden all year round from spring to winter.” >>

Top: The garden is set in four acres with an additional 35 acres of pasture. Above: Sam Pond and terrier Pedro.

>> “We’ve a natural spring and two wells so we do not need to worry too much about coping with drought.” “Sam works on the garden , and we’re lucky; he’s a talented, formally trained first class gardener. We held a recent Open Garden event and 380 people attended.”

“Sam is great, not least because he thinks ahead about and makes plans for the garden a year in advance. It’s important not to neglect planning amid ongoing work - there will always be something to do and things always will get in the way, but by being organised and not too ambitious for any one year, you can add to the garden bit by bit.”

Beyond the formal areas of lawn which replaced a large swimming pool, happily, Matthew and Rebecca have created an area of formal lawn immaculately kept by Sam,

90

“Matthew and Rebecca have created an area of formal lawn but also, a few wildflower friendly wild grass areas…” but they have also maintained a few areas that are a bit more wild and wonderful, with some wildflower-friendly wild grass areas kept shaggy to attract bees and butterflies.

At the bottom of the garden, overlooking pasture, is an area with a contemporary teardrop shaped cocoon hammock - an enviable place to read overlooking a statue of the previous owners’ horse. Another impressive string to Sam’s bow is his ability to make and maintain dry stone

walling. That’ll come in handy down through the years when seeking to maintain the beautiful stonework in the garden as repairs become necessary. Sam’s talents are huge; he’s done a superb job maintaining but also creating a vision for the future of the garden. Together with Matthew and Rebecca’s efforts, this is one Rutland garden which will doubtless look marvellous now but will evolve for years to come too.

Once I could be sure Sam was safely out of the way and wouldn’t laugh at me and with Pedro still keeping an eye on the photographer, I attempted dialogo con el perro once more. “Hola, perro! Siéntate!” Sure enough, straight down on the grass. Well I’ll be damned… n

WEDDINGS

On Cloud Nine

After attending no fewer than nine other weddings as guests, it was finally local couple Jasmine and Chris’s turn to say ‘I do!’ They did so at a wonderfully warm outdoor ceremony in Rutland, surrounded by family and friends... Photographer: Rebekah Robert Photography, 07736 931496, www.rebekahrobert.com.

Jasmine and Chris celebrated becoming husband and wife recently with a wedding of their dreams at in Exton in May.

It made a change for the couple to be centre of attention, having attended no fewer than nine weddings of friends and family before enjoying their own. With permanent smiles all day long, it’s a day the couple wish they relive over and over again!

WEDDING SUPPLIERS

JASMINE & CHRIS RINGROSE

Jasmine and Chris are from Peterborough and work in the hospitality industry. They wonder if they’d crossed paths before whilst working without ever realising it!

“As soon as we drove up the road of Barnsdale Hall to the main reception, we were impressed with the grounds and views overlooking Rutland Water. We took one look at the area outside the Edith Weston suite where the hotel holds its outdoor ceremonies and we were just in awe of how beautiful it was.”

It was three years later at the start of 2017 that Chris and her son, close friends and his Sister and husband planned the proposal to Jasmine on a family break at Centre Parcs… though it very nearly didn’t go to plan!

Luckily for Chris, the others had decided to venture out, leaving the couple on their own.

“We had supper out with the group in the evening and Chris’s Sister said she would take our son Harry back to get him ready for bed and our friends also sneakily escaped to the arcade, unbeknown to me that they were in on it the whole time!”

“He started to pull a box out of his pocket and my first response was to ask if he was joking. He laughed, then I started crying! He asked me to be his wife and of course I said yes! A few glasses of champagne were presented to us and we celebrated together.”

As any excited bride-to-be would, Jasmine didn’t wait long to start looking for ideas and only two months later, they started looking for venues in the area. Their first post of call was a wedding venue, so they could arrange everything else around an available date.

“We officially met in August 2014 at the Peterborough Beer Festival. I had gone with a couple of friends from work and Chris had joined us later on. We have a very similar sense of humour so naturally we got on well straight away.”

“Chris had found a lovely spot off the beaten track that he wanted to show me, but I had felt poorly the previous couple of days so when he suggested a walk in the very fresh air (it was February, after all!), you can only imagine my lack of interest... which nearly derailed the whole proposal!”

“We strolled back to our cabin, everywhere was very still and quiet, then when we were nearly at the end of the path Chris stopped me by a nicely lit area with a little bench and an old fashioned phonebox.”

“We held off until May however to confirm the date as we were waiting for our niece to be born and we didn’t want to overshadow her arrival!”

“My next task was to find a wedding dress. It was pretty easy... I fell in love with my dress as soon as I put it on. When other brides tell you that you’ll know it’s the one, I thought they were being flippant, but surely enough that’s exactly what happened.” Jasmine looked stunning in a full length mermaid-style gown with a long train, a beaded back, lace and beading everywhere else. After considering six other dresses, the brides says that her took her breath away as soon as she put it on.” >> 95

- WEDDINGS -

“The top table was just the two of us, which it allowed us to spend a couple of hours alone It was important to us as it gave us some time to together!” >> “Ensuring that Chris was able to relax and spend time with all of his favourite people was essential as far as I was concerned, since he often ends up missing out on a lot of family weekends and seasonal days off due to his job as the General Manager of a nearby pub.”

“Taking our vows felt very real,” says Jasmine on her favourite part of the day. “I finally got to share the same name as my Son, so that was really special to us all.”

“Our main advice to other couples getting married is to relax and to enjoy a special time in your life.” “It’s easy to stress over minor details like the weather or whether everything is ‘right.’ But nobody should look back on your day and realise they wasted a split second, as it really does go quickly.”

“We can also recommend taking some time out to be by yourselves and spending time together. It’s so easy to be too ‘busy’ with friends and relatives that ironically the one person you don’t see on the big day is the person you’ve just married!”

“I can honestly say we had the best time on our wedding day. We hear certain songs that were played that night whilst we are walking around a shop or something, and it gives us both a little buzz of happiness!”

“One final recommendation: if you’re looking for somewhere a little different for your honeymoon, we recommend Porto Santo, a small Island next to Madeira, off the coast of Morocco. It’s peaceful, not too ‘touristy’ and it allows you to relax together!” n 96

NEW ONE-STOP SPINAL CLINIC LAUNCHED

A NEW ONE-STOP SPINAL CLINIC has been launched at Avicenna Clinic enabling speedy assessment of patients with acute or chronic back pain providing a more efficient service for patients, with quicker diagnosis and minimal waiting times for appointments. This innovative new clinic offers accurate fast assessment of patients’ individual symptoms by international highly experienced spinal surgeon Mr Masood Shafafy, who will then provide advice about pain relief and recommend a treatment pathway as appropriate. The new service aims to have a clinical consultation and important diagnostic tests done at one visit. The unique benefit of the service is that it brings a multi-disciplinary team, including Pain Management Consultants, physiotherapy specialists, Musculoskeletal Interventional Radiologist, psychologist, occupational therapist together in one area to ensure patients are able to have their initial consultation, a variety of diagnostic tests, investigations and their followup consultation in the same day, reducing the need for multiple visit all in our state-of-theart Diagnostic Centre including the only open interventional MRI in east of England. Mr Masood Shafafy, Consultant Spinal Surgeon explained: “Being able to investigate, diagnose and either treat the patient on the same day, or send them home with their treatment plan, so they can be followed up closer to 110

home if necessary, is a valuable new approach to improve our spine services here at the Avicenna Clinic. “At present, the clinic is once a week, we feel that this is helping to greatly reduce waiting times, and is proving to be very popular with our patients. We hope this is something we can develop further over time.” Dr Hany Elmadbouh, Consultant Radiologist for the spinal one-stop clinic added: “It is very satisfying to see how this service has improved the diagnostic pathway for our patients. Instead of them seeing a doctor in outpatients, being booked for multiple investigations, requiring them to visit different departments on different days, sometimes weeks or months apart, and then returning on a further day to get those results from a different doctor, we can now do everything in one day within the same department as a ‘one-stop clinic”. One-stop clinics have significant benefits to the NHS in alleviating pressure on the 18week target for treatment. In the traditional model, a patient must pass through a minimum of 2 appointments before receiving their diagnosis and being listed for their treatment. Time lapses between each appointment for administrative tasks and standard processing to take place. The one-stop clinic reduces unnecessary outpatient appointments, saving administration

resources, clinic space, clinic costs, and reduced time waiting for patients improving the care pathway and experience. The one-stop clinic offers solutions to many of our clients to improve patient care whilst offering a comprehensive range of treatment options covering the latest leading medical and interventional therapies including: epidural injections, nerve block, facet joint block and Joints & soft tissue injection. The clinic specialises in managing all forms of spinal conditions but routinely treat orthopaedic and sport-related injuries also. The team all share the same aim which is to allow you to leave with a better understanding of your symptoms. Discussing treatment options which may include conservative treatment such as exercise and physiotherapy, injections or surgery. Comprehensive letters summarising all the information will be sent to you, your GP or anyone you wish involved in your case. For self-paying patients, a referral from a doctor or healthcare professional is not essential. The clinic is also recognised by all major insurance companies.n For more information or to book an appointment, please call Tel 03302020597 E-mail AV.Clinic@NHS.net or Fax 01733516014 . For more information about the clinic please visit the clinic website www.avicennaclinic.com. Or visit North Street, Peterborough PE1 2RA.

ADVERTORIAL

SUFFER FROM ACHES & PAINS? Make MBST your first step on the road to recovery…

MBST therapy is a pioneering form of treatment for musculoskeletal problems. We use MRT technology to communicate with the affected cartilage, bone, ligament, tendon and muscle cells and encourage

them to regrow.

This method offers long-term pain relief and improved mobility for numerous afflictions, including: • Osteoarthritis • Osteoporosis

• Intervertebral disc problems • Sports injuries

• General wear and tear that happens over time. 112

Once the affected area or injury has received enough MBST treatment, the cells will

continue to grow and develop by themselves. HOW DOES IT WORK?

MBST is similar to MRI technology (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), but instead of using magnetic resonance (MRT) to generate images of the body, MBST uses magnetic resonance (MRT) to stimulate specific cells at a molecular level, encouraging the degenerated cells to regenerate more quickly, so as to better replace the lost ones. This non-intrusive treatment offers both anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, which enables a comfortable, uncomplicated

and sustainable treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, without the need for surgery.

Your closest health professional providing MBST is Clare House Physiotherapy Tinwell, Rutland. 01780 238 084.

Please visit www.mbst-therapy.co.uk or email/call the friendly and helpful Cell Regeneration team info@mbst-therapy.co.uk to enquire now.
