Summer’s here and the time is right for getting those children outdoors and enjoying some much-needed sunshine. Accordingly, we have toured the West Country to find the region’s most exciting open air attractions in our feature on P. 18. A downside of summer can be children’s tendency to let key skills slip, especially reading. Our summer reading feature (P.28) provides hints on how to keep up kids’ passion for the written word. And finally, we explore sports facilities available for the region’s disabled youngsters, which give them the chance to participate fully in outdoor activities (P.6). Here’s to a happy and healthy holiday for all!

There are now three new baby pygmy goats, Spice, Dolly Mixture (or simply Dolly) and the latest arrival, Snowflake, who is white and very cute indeed. In more exciting news, Prinknash is building a new Visitor Centre, scheduled to open in late August, which will host a range of attractions and activities for children and adults alike. rinknash Bird and Deer Park is going through many changes this year, not least the arrival of its two new reindeer calves, Frozen and Blanco, who were born in late May. This now means that, along with the famous trio Rudolph, Prancer and Comet, the park has a fine collection of five bouncing reindeer. Rudolph, who weighs in at 25 stone, is a very proud dad. entrance. Finally, from February 2015, Prinknash will appoint resident artists, providing an entirely new creative and educational dimension to what’s on offer. Although it's been all go at the Bird Park, the features that visitors have loved for many years still remain. The famous Wendy House has never looked better and is still stocked with toys to play with. The Castle Folly has been re-built after the winter storms and the
tame fallow deer who feed from your hand are still very much part of the park’s charm. Toffee and Treacle, the miniature donkeys, are there for the summer months and are always ready to welcome anyone who wants to say hello. The bird park also hosts private children’s parties in the famous Gypsy Caravan, which has to be the most unusual place to celebrate that special day. So, whether you’re a regular visitor or encountering these wonderful animals and attractions for the first time, there are few more exciting ways to discover wildlife than a visit to Prinknash Bird and Deer Park!

sporting chance
What support is available for disabled children who wish to participate in sport? Ellie Pipe discovers a wealth of West Country opportunities.
S
ports and activities are vital to a child’s health, happiness and wellbeing. This is as true for disabled children as it is for their ablebodied friends, possibly even more so. Sport is not only beneficial to children’s physical health, but can help their emotional well-being, social and communication skills and improve overall confidence. The NHS Change 4 Life website recommends children should be active for at least 60 minutes a day. While for many parents the main issue is luring their little ones away from the TV’s tempting glare, for parents of disabled children, the challenges may sometimes feel more overwhelming. The good news is, help is at hand. There are a number of charities and organisations set up across the country specifically geared towards supporting disabled children who want to take part in sport. Wheelpower, the national charity for wheelchair sport, is one such organisation, striving to provide opportunities for children nationwide to enjoy sports and physical activity in a fun and inclusive environment. Wheelpower’s chief executive, Martin McElhatton says one of the main challenges disabled children have to overcome is finding a welcoming and accessible club, with qualified coaches. They also have to obtain the correct equipment to play. Wheelpower can assist with finding a local club that is right for a child and also advises schools how to make PE lessons more inclusive, beneficial and enjoyable for disabled children. “Every day, more and more disabled children get the chance to play sport at a local club or in PE, but more can be done,” says Martin. Of course, as every parent knows, sports clubs often don’t come cheap, especially if specialist equipment or support is required. 6

Help and funding are available from organisations such as Get Kids Going, a national charity that focusses on giving disabled children access to sport and offers sports grants to aspiring youngsters. Whether your child is the next Ellie Simmonds or David Weir, or just wants to get out and have some fun, there are a wealth of opportunities on our doorstep just waiting to be explored. Horse riding is good exercise, therapeutic and a particularly good way for physically disabled children to gain a sense of independence and freedom. Rein and Shine is a British Horse Society (BHS) Highly Commended riding centre that also has the Accessibility Mark from the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Children can learn in a relaxed, fun and safe environment and the Hoof Club, open to all children, aged 4 to 15, incorporates riding, horse welfare and management studies. Out in the beautiful Cotswolds countryside, Activity Camps create
an unforgettable, action-packed school holiday for children aged 4 to 12. From arts and crafts to zorbing, there is a massive range of activities available for all children, run by qualified teachers, sports coaches and trainee teachers, with additional one-to-one support available if needed. Aspiring sea-farers can pop down to Bristol’s harbourside and meet the lovely All-Aboard, which runs a registered RYA Sailability Centre offering disabled people of all ages a chance to participate in the challenging activity of sailing. Evening classes are available for children aged 8 and over, and schools and groups can also be accommodated. For something more land-based, why not let your child create a song and a dance at G Dance, the Gloucestershire-based company specialising in inclusive forms of dance and arts? Or, perhaps they will turn their hand to, well, almost anything, at the extensive aspire Trust facilities in Gloucestershire where swimming, archery and

d r a o b n Pi Woodlands Grove wins PT awards Primary Times readers have voted in two awards for Woodlands Grove Camping Park as their favourite holiday destination. Parents of children from 97% of primary schools in Plymouth, Cornwall and the surrounding areas, cast their votes online and in a survey in the October issue of the magazine. Families answered a series of open ended questions asking for their favourite holiday destination. While presenting the awards to the 100 acre park in Devon, Linda Edwards of Primary Times, Devon and Cornwall, said, “The results portray an honest reflection of where people prefer to spend their leisure time. Congratulations to Woodlands Grove Camping Park on winning these two prestigious awards. When budgeting for a family holiday, our survey showed Woodlands provided the most important factors, value for money combined with high standards.” Woodlands Grove not only has excellent family camping facilities but free entry to Woodlands Family Theme Park, with two nights’ stay, allowing massive savings. Blow the whistle on sunburn Julia Bradbury supports the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, helping keep kids safe in the sun
The summer holidays provide many opportunities for outdoor fun. But protecting children from the sun can be tricky. To help, the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund has devised the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, designed for those who work outdoors with children, ensuring that they are actively protected throughout the day. This free online resource was developed by a leading skin cancer specialist, alongside experts in PE and child welfare. It is supported by over 30 national governing bodies of sport and outdoor activities. Participants follow simple guidelines based on ‘educating, protecting and leading by example’. Once they have completed the criteria, they can use their OK Accreditation Mark. Broadcaster Julia Bradbury says, “As a lover of the outdoors I am aware of the harmful effects of the sun. We owe it to all children to make sure they are sun protected.” Ffi: W: www.oksunsafetycode.com

Meet T-Rex!
Summer time at Chedworth Roman Villa means heaps of family fun and archaeology. Starting off with a Festival of Archaeology on 12– 27 July and the Legio II re-enactment of Roman legion on 26-27 July, there are special activities every day. The magical Discovery dome returns to the Villa for 4-17 August with planetarium style shows about the villa’s history and rediscovery 150 years ago. Dowsing experts are at the Villa on 9-10 August and craftsmen displaying their skills at the traditional crafts weekend on 23-25 August. Archaeological excavations resume on 18 August and continue for two weeks, uncovering further Roman remains and mosaics along the north range of the site. If you would like to see the new discoveries, do get along before everything gets covered up at the end of the two weeks for conservation purposes.
Amid a busy programme of fun and learning at The Brewery, Cheltenham, this summer is a chance to meet a “live” T-Rex as part of the neighbouring Wilson Art Gallery and Museum’s ‘Meet Rex’ exhibition. On Thu 7 Aug, from 12 noon-4pm, families get to pet a T-Rex and ask his keeper questions. The T-Rex performs walkabouts while lucky visitors pick up a free fossilised shark tooth (while stocks last). Other attractions include Emergency Services Day on Fri 8 Aug and ‘Brewery Live’ on Thu 28 Aug. See Roundabout for more details. Generations of farming fun
Established in 1986 in Suffolk, Xplore is a provider of worldwide youth travel. Offering both daily and residential activity camps for nearly 30 years, Xplore knows what children and teenagers want to do in their school holidays! Its day camps make a brilliant childcare option throughout the holidays, but it also offers seven night residential camps where 6 to 17 year olds can take part in a multi-activity programme including outdoor adventure sessions such as climbing, archery and more. Additionally, Xplore has excursions, clubs to join (where children can learn a new hobby) or extra courses such as horse riding, wakeboarding and water sports.
A wry smile breaks across Rob Jewell’s face as he describes how the children who used to visit St Augustines Farm are now bringing their own offspring to meet the animals, 25 years after he and his wife Elaine first opened their gates to visitors. “It makes me feel old when mums and dads tell me they used to come as children,” laughs the fifth generation farmer. “We opened officially in 1988 although the farm then and now is very different.” The Jewells have a special school room but their real aim is for children to enjoy themselves, whether whizzing around on toy tractors in the play barn or running outdoors in the meadow. A walk past the animal paddocks brings you to Hamalot with the Magic Table camera obscura and the farm has a model cow for children to have a go at milking. “We have really enjoyed watching generations of children have a fun introduction to life on the farm,” says Rob.

• Operating on a not-forprofit basis, aspire Sports and Cultural Trust is a charity in the Gloucester area which runs the ‘aspire Active Life Membership’ across two aspire sites, GL1 and Oxstalls. It encompasses all junior activities including archery, badminton, swimming, tennis, Zumba and much more, keeping kids of all ages active and entertained on a daily basis throughout the summer. The trust’s aim is to inspire young people aged up to 17 to get fit and active, helping them to develop a healthy appetite for physical activity, while learning skills they will use throughout their lives. Regardless of age, children can choose one main activity as well as a variety of other activities which they are free to participate in as many times as they wish throughout the month. Perhaps one of the best things about the membership is that, as a child’s interests change, so too can the activities. They can simply swap and learn a different skillset. As a member of aspire Active Life, children can also enjoy a range of family films at the Gloucester Guildhall Cinema free of charge. The aspire Active Life Membership was designed to make children’s life better, make them more active and provide fun activities at exceptional value. Prices per month range from £20.50 for four months old to 10 years to £25.50 for 11-17 years. The beach is back! Summer Beach at Taurus Crafts, Sat 19 July – Sun 31 Aug • Summer has arrived at Taurus Crafts in seaside style! The crafts centre has imported a mountain of sand to create its very own beach for the summer. Complemented by a giant seascape mural, the beach provides a fun filled opportunity to get the seaside feel – you can eat ice creams, make sand castles, see the Punch and Judy show, or meet Arnie Kazzam, the magician. In addition to the traditional fun of the beach, sandcastle building, beach games and too much ice cream, Taurus has some great events including food markets, a family beach party, an evening antiques market and craft markets. If you’re feeling crafty and want to get the kids involved, why not have a go at one of the many hands-on workshops and activities available throughout the school holiday? There is something on every day of the week, with a choice of different activities most days. These include stone carving, knitting, puppet making, mini beach buggies, paint your own pot, throw your own pot, mosaics and 3D beach in a box. The busy and varied summer programme often adds new events and activities so phone ahead, visit the website or find Taurus Crafts on Facebook and Twitter. Garden Week at Sudeley • Garden enthusiasts will be thrilled to hear that popular tourist attraction, Sudeley Castle & Gardens, is offering special tours around its worldrenowned gardens this summer. Garden Week at the castle is from 23-29 June, with special tours from the expert gardening team offering further insight into the 10 gardens, currently at their peak and in full fragrant bloom. Each of the 10 award-winning gardens has its own special story to tell, from the Queens’ Garden, so named because four of England’s queens, Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I, once admired the hundreds of varieties of roses found in the garden, to the Knot Garden, which is based on a pattern on a dress worn by Elizabeth I in a portrait which hangs in the castle. Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives, lived and died in the castle, and her tomb lies in a restored 15th century church found in the gardens. Visitors can find out more about the Mulberry Garden, centred around the mulberry tree planted in 1865 by Emma Dent, and explore the Herb Garden Walk, which takes guests through a fine collection of plants cultivated for their medical properties for thousands of years. The ruins of the 15th century tithe barn form the centre of a beautiful romantic garden, featuring a tranquil carp pond surrounded by wisteria, primroses, hollyhocks and cardoons – the perfect place to relax and soak up the view of the castle ruins. Tickets are included in admission price, though must be pre-booked. Ffi: Sudeley Castle & Gardens T: 01242 602308 or E: enquiries@ sudeley.org.uk W: www.sudeleycastle.co.uk

Swim safe this summer • Drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death among children in the UK. Around 400 people accidentally drown in the UK every year with thousands more having near drowning experiences, many resulting in life changing injuries. The summer holidays are one of the most important times for families to be aware of water safety, whether abroad or at a seaside location in the UK. Research by the UK’s national governing body for swimming, the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), shows that one in 10 parents say their child only swims on holiday, yet for the most part, they will have no awareness of the dangers of open water. Each year, children account for around two-thirds of incidents RNLI lifeguards respond to on some of the UK’s busiest beaches. The ASA operates a Learn to Swim Pathway in partnership with pool operators across England designed to offer a little peace of mind. Covering survival knowledge, awareness of dangers and vital life-saving information, this range of four awards is a must for any parent to consider for their child. Children aged 7 to 14 whose families are planning to visit Bude, Bournemouth or South Shields this summer, have the opportunity to take part in ‘Swim Safe’ a free beach and water safety course from the experts at the ASA. Swim Safe is open to both local children and those holidaying: 8,000 children are expected to go through the programme this summer across the three Swim Safe sites. Read all about it!
In the excitement of the long holidays there’s a danger children will forget their reading skills. Ellen White explains how to avoid the ‘summer slip’.
I
n today’s digitised world, when many children have mastered using a tablet or smartphone by the time they reach primary school, the pleasures of a good book can be forgotten over the summer holidays. Where once existed a whole extra bag for holiday reading, there’s now frequently just the cold glow of a computer screen. Teachers even have a name for it, “the summer slip”. Research from the Institute of Public Policy Research has found that a long summer break can impede children’s learning in both English and Maths, while educational charity The Reading Agency reveals that reading for pleasure is more important to children’s successes than education or social class. All the evidence suggests it’s vital to encourage good reading habits. As Nicola Levison, a teacher at Hotwells Primary, Bristol, confirms, “Children’s reading does drop off a bit in the summer, but if children are engrossed in a series of books then that interest is sustained as they are spurred on to read the next one.” She
suggests active parent participation. “When the time pressures of school are eased, you could re-read loved books together. Introduce kids to books you loved as a child and make it a shared, pleasurable experience.” Summer can be a busy time juggling work, family holidays and childcare, but there is plenty of help at hand. The Summer Reading Challenge is a nationwide event run by Arts Council England specifically aimed at addressing this problem. Children aged 4 to 11 are encouraged to read six books over eight weeks, with prize incentives, a medal and certificate for completing the challenge. This year’s theme is ‘Mythical Maze’, encouraging children to focus on stories about myths, legends and monsters. For those children who struggle to engage with reading, this is a great way to take pressure off curriculum-based targets and discover the fun in reading. Just 20 minutes per day can be enough to prevent a significant dip in your child’s reading development over the summer months.

Top reading tips • Organise a fun day out centred on choosing new books at a library or bookshop: many charity bookshops have great children’s sections. • Organise a book swap with other parents and children in the area. • Is there a film your child loves to watch? There’s a strong chance it’s adapted from a novel. So whether it’s Harry Potter or Disney, encourage your child to discover the book behind the film. • Don’t dismiss comics or graphic novels. They’re an exciting and accessible introduction to the written word. • If the only way you can get them to read is on a Kindle or tablet, don’t despair. Any form of reading is better than none but set parental blocks to avoid online distractions.

Thank you so much for the lovely pictures you send me. This summer I have teamed up with our friends At-Bristol Science Centre, who have generously offered a family ticket to the four lucky winners of our art competition. Inspired by the new Food! exhibition at the centre, our subject next issue is ’Making my favourite meal’. Hint: “making” can include growing food, as well as cooking it in the kitchen. Please send your pictures to: Arty Barty, BN&Media, Temple Way, Bristol, BS99 7HD, or email high resolution jpegs to my editor, mike.gartside@ venue.co.uk. Don’t forget to put your name, age, full home postal address and school on the back: deadline Monday 4 August.

Ellen White reviews the new releases.
Puffin revisited This summer, Puffin introduces a collection of timeless stories for a whole new generation of readers to discover. From ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ to ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘The Neverending Story’, parents are bound to recognise a forgotten favourite from their childhood. Classics which have stood the test of time, this series of tales will enchant and capture the hearts of today’s children. In Richard Adams’ ‘Watership Down’, the young rabbit Fiver has a sixth sense that something terrible is going to happen to his warren. Led by his brother Hazel, he and the few who believe him set off on a dangerous journey to find a new home. Adams’ language is rich and detailed, immersing the reader completely in the rabbits’ underground world. The rabbits’ language is often onomatopoeic; a ‘hrududu’ is a car for example, which helps the reader to see our world from a rabbit’s point of view. At just over six hundred pages, this is best suited for the more confident reader but there’s nothing to stop parents of Year 2 or 3 pupils reading it at bedtime – ideal for those long summer evenings. Meanwhile, ‘Trumpet of the Swan’ a lesser-known fable by E.B. White, author of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘Stuart Little’, explores the plight of Louis the trumpeter swan, who’s born without a voice.

With the help of his human friend Sam, he learns to read and write instead but this doesn’t solve the problem of how to woo lovely swan Serena, until Louis’s father comes up with a solution which leads to adventures, fame and fortune. White tells the story predominantly from the perspective and inner thoughts of Louis as he struggles to come to terms with being different from the rest of his family. It’s a gentle, charming story with good length chapters for children growing more confident with reading alone. Unusual words are helpfully explained in a brief dictionary at the back along with a quiz about the book, facts and a step by step guide of ‘How to Draw a Swan’.
