Summer’s here and the time is right for getting those children outdoors and enjoying some much-needed sunshine. Accordingly, we have toured the West Country to find the region’s most exciting open air attractions in our feature on P. 16. A downside of summer can be children’s tendency to let key skills slip, especially reading. Our summer reading feature (P.21) provides hints on how to keep up kids’ passion for the written word. And finally, we explore sports facilities available for the region’s disabled youngsters, which give them the chance to participate fully in outdoor activities (P.6). Here’s to a happy and healthy holiday for all!

pening in time for the summer holidays, Food!, the brand new exhibition presented by At-Bristol Science Centre, maps out the journey of food from plot to plate to palate. Visitors can explore the science embedded in our everyday lives by taking part in cool foodie experiments and playing with exhibits. These include popping corn using light energy, grinding your own flour, conversing with the Robo Chef who will give you your own recipe to try out and milking a cow, to name but a few. Little ones can dress up like a bee, learn the

bees’ waggledance and collect pollen and nectar from the ‘flowers’ to put into the hive, as well as taking part in some fun interactive storytelling with the brand new Ursa & Leo adventure ‘Mud, Slugs and Scarecrows’, for under 8s. It’s a feast for the senses with four key areas: Grow It, Cook It, Eat It and Love It – there will be a fully functioning experimental kitchen where there’s the opportunity for hands-on cooking, and creating food with a science twist, plus an open greenhouse to investigate how our food grows, as well as the chance to meet food experts in the special ‘meet the expert’ events. The drop-in activities in these spaces will mirror the seasons. ‘Summer in the Kitchen’ will look at the science behind strawberry dissection and why barbequed bangers taste so good. In the Greenhouse, visitors can get some soil under their fingernails and have a go at growing their own summer seeds. Hand washing basins will of course be provided! There’s an interactive map to show what’s being grown in Bristol
and further afield. Visitors are encouraged to send pictures of their growing and become part of the exhibition. Whether it’s your first attempt at growing herbs, a window box with tomatoes, a small vegetable plot in a garden or a larger allotment, they want to know about it (including photos of the growing action). It all helps to demonstrate what kind of a nation of growers we are. Food! is a chance to be inspired by something that is so integral to our lives. You can engage with food in surprising ways, discover new skills, learn about food as a family and even get the youngest enthused by the food they eat through role play, storytelling, experiments and tasty recipes. If after that, you’re hungry for more, the fun doesn’t stop there. You can physically take home lots of things with you, as well as using the ‘Explore More’ technology that allows you to save photos, experiments and other things. Just scan your At-Bristol wrist-
band and, once home, you can access them online, share them with your friends and family, and inform the world of your own food adventures. So keep your eyes peeled, get your tastebuds ready and prepare to play with your food! Ffi: W: www.at-bristol.org.uk/food

sporting chance
What support is available for disabled children who wish to participate in sport? Ellie Pipe discovers a wealth of West Country opportunities.
S
ports and activities are vital to a child’s health, happiness and wellbeing. This is as true for disabled children as it is for their ablebodied friends, possibly even more so. Sport is not only beneficial to children’s physical health, but can help their emotional well-being, social and communication skills and improve overall confidence. The NHS Change 4 Life website recommends children should be active for at least 60 minutes a day. While for many parents the main issue is luring their little ones away from the TV’s tempting glare, for parents of disabled children, the challenges may sometimes feel more overwhelming. The good news is, help is at hand. There are a number of charities and organisations set up across the country specifically geared towards supporting disabled children who want to take part in sport. Wheelpower, the national charity for wheelchair sport, is one such organisation, striving to provide opportunities for children nationwide to enjoy sports and physical activity in a fun and inclusive environment. Wheelpower’s chief executive, Martin McElhatton says one of the main challenges disabled children have to overcome is finding a welcoming and accessible club, with qualified coaches. They also have to obtain the correct equipment to play. Wheelpower can assist with finding a local club that is right for a child and also advises schools how to make PE lessons more inclusive, beneficial and enjoyable for disabled children. “Every day, more and more disabled children get the chance to play sport at a local club or in PE, but more can be done,” says Martin. Of course, as every parent knows, sports clubs often don’t come cheap, especially if specialist

equipment or support is required. Help and funding are available from organisations such as Get Kids Going, a national charity that focusses on giving disabled children access to sport and offers sports grants to aspiring youngsters. Whether your child is the next Ellie Simmonds or David Weir, or just wants to get out and have some fun, there are a wealth of opportunities on our doorstep just waiting to be explored. Horse riding is good exercise, therapeutic and a particularly good way for physically disabled children to gain a sense of independence and freedom. Rein and Shine is a British Horse Society (BHS) Highly Commended riding centre that also has the Accessibility Mark from the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Children can learn in a relaxed, fun and safe environment and the Hoof Club, open to all children, aged 4 to 15, incorporates riding, horse welfare and management studies. Out in the beautiful Cotswolds
countryside, Activity Camps create an unforgettable, action-packed school holiday for children aged 4 to 12. From arts and crafts to zorbing, there is a massive range of activities available for all children, run by qualified teachers, sports coaches and trainee teachers, with additional one-to-one support available if needed. Aspiring sea-farers can pop down to Bristol’s harbourside and meet the lovely All-Aboard, which runs a registered RYA Sailability Centre offering disabled people of all ages a chance to participate in the challenging activity of sailing. Evening classes are available for children aged 8 and over and schools and groups can also be accommodated. For something more land-based, why not let your child create a song and a dance at G Dance, the Gloucestershire-based company specialising in inclusive forms of dance and arts? Or, perhaps they will turn their hand to, well, almost anything, at the extensive aspire Trust facilities in Gloucestershire

Blow the whistle on sunburn Julia Bradbury supports the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, helping keep kids safe in the sun
The summer holidays provide many opportunities for outdoor fun. But protecting children from the sun can be tricky. To help, the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund has devised the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, designed for those who work outdoors with children, ensuring that they are actively protected throughout the day. This free online resource was developed by a leading skin cancer specialist, alongside experts in PE and child welfare. It is supported by over 30 national governing bodies of sport and outdoor activities. Participants follow simple guidelines based on ‘educating, protecting and leading by example’. Once they have completed the criteria, they can use their OK Accreditation Mark. Broadcaster Julia Bradbury says, “As a lover of the outdoors I am aware of the harmful effects of the sun. We owe it to all children to make sure they are sun protected.” Ffi: W: www.oksunsafetycode.com

Woodlands Grove wins PT awards
Primary Times readers have voted in two awards for Woodlands Grove Camping Park as their favourite holiday destination. Parents of children from 97% of primary schools in Plymouth, Cornwall and the surrounding areas, cast their votes online and in a survey in the October issue of the magazine. Families answered a series of open ended questions asking for their favourite holiday destination. While presenting the awards to the 100 acre park in Devon, Linda Edwards of Primary Times, Devon and Cornwall, said, “The results portray an honest reflection of where people prefer to spend their leisure time. Congratulations to Woodlands Grove Camping Park on winning these two prestigious awards. When budgeting for a family holiday, our survey showed Woodlands provided the most important factors, value for money combined with high standards.” Woodlands Grove not only has excellent family camping facilities but free entry to Woodlands Family Theme Park, with two nights’ stay, allowing massive savings. It is the biggest ever investment in the park’s playground and is set to become a firm family favourite, along with the existing treehouse slide. Toddlers won’t be left out as a ‘Mini-Manor’ treehouse is also being built in some of the smaller trees, with slides and activities to keep them busy. Now for the first time you can purchase online tickets for the park at last year’s prices, which are valid for one month from date of purchase. Good fats provide brain fuel • Omega-3 fatty acids aren’t called the good fats for no reason. These long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids actually play a role in almost every cell of our bodies, especially the brain which is 60% fat, believe it or not! Dietitian and expert in child nutrition Dr Carrie Ruxton says, “Previous studies have shown the right combination of Omega-3 and -6 not only supports brain function but can also aid a good night’s sleep, both of which are important for getting the most out of classroom learning. “The best source of these fats is from oily fish such as mackerel, pilchards and sardines,” she says. “Overall consumption of oily fish especially in young people is well below what it should be, so supplements have a major role to play in boosting Omega-3 intakes.” A daily fish oil supplement can help to bridge a nutritional gap. Look for one containing a specific ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) with GLA (gamma linolenic acid) such as Equazen eye q, which provides a perfectly balanced intake of these essential nutrients. A formulation of Omega-3 fish oil and Omega-6, Equazen eye q is sold throughout pharmacies, supermarkets and health food stores nationwide. Ffi: W: www.equazen.co.uk

Ellen White reviews the new releases.
Puffin revisited This summer, Puffin introduces a collection of timeless stories for a whole new generation of readers to discover. From ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ to ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘The Neverending Story’, parents are bound to recognise a forgotten favourite from their childhood. Classics which have stood the test of time, this series of tales will enchant and capture the hearts of today’s children. In Richard Adams’ ‘Watership Down’, the young rabbit Fiver has a sixth sense that something terrible is going to happen to his warren. Led by his brother Hazel, he and the few who believe him set off on a dangerous journey to find a new home. Adams’ language is rich and detailed, immersing the reader completely in the rabbits’ underground world. The rabbits’ language is often onomatopoeic; a ‘hrududu’ is a car for example, which helps the reader to see our world from a rabbit’s point of view. At just over six hundred pages, this is best suited for the more confident reader but there’s nothing to stop parents of Year 2 or 3 pupils reading it at bedtime – ideal for those long summer evenings. Meanwhile, ‘Trumpet of the Swan’ a lesser-known fable by E.B. White, author of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘Stuart Little’, explores the plight of Louis the trumpeter swan, who’s born without a voice.

With the help of his human friend Sam, he learns to read and write instead but this doesn’t solve the problem of how to woo lovely swan Serena, until Louis’s father comes up with a solution which leads to adventures, fame and fortune. White tells the story predominantly from the perspective and inner thoughts of Louis as he struggles to come to terms with being different from the rest of his family. It’s a gentle, charming story with good length chapters for children growing more confident with reading alone. Unusual words are helpfully explained in a brief dictionary at the back along with a quiz about the book, facts and a step by step guide of ‘How to Draw a Swan’. Read all about it!
In the excitement of the long holidays there’s a danger children will forget their reading skills. Ellen White explains how to avoid the ‘summer slip’.
I
n today’s digitised world, when many children have mastered using a tablet or smartphone by the time they reach primary school, the pleasures of a good book can be forgotten over the summer holidays. Where once existed a whole extra bag for holiday reading, there’s now frequently just the cold glow of a computer screen. Teachers even have a name for it, “the summer slip”. Research from the Institute of Public Policy Research has found that a long summer break can impede children’s learning in both English and Maths, while educational charity The Reading Agency reveals that reading for pleasure is more important to children’s successes than education or social class. All the evidence suggests it’s vital to encourage good reading habits. As Nicola Levison, a teacher at Hotwells Primary, Bristol, confirms, “Children’s reading does drop off a bit in the summer, but if children are engrossed in a series of books then that interest is sustained as they are spurred on to read the next one.” She suggests
active parent participation. “When the time pressures of school are eased, you could re-read loved books together. Introduce kids to books you loved as a child and make it a shared, pleasurable experience.” Summer can be a busy time juggling work, family holidays and childcare, but there is plenty of help at hand. The Summer Reading Challenge is a nationwide event run by Arts Council England specifically aimed at addressing this problem. Children aged 4 to 11 are encouraged to read six books over eight weeks, with prize incentives, a medal and certificate for completing the challenge. This year’s theme is ‘Mythical Maze’, encouraging children to focus on stories about myths, legends and monsters. For those children who struggle to engage with reading, this is a great way to take pressure off curriculum-based targets and discover the fun in reading. Just 20 minutes per day can be enough to prevent a significant dip in your child’s reading development over the summer months.

Top reading tips • Organise a fun day out centred on choosing new books at a library or bookshop: many charity bookshops have great children’s sections. • Organise a book swap with other parents and children in the area. • Is there a film your child loves to watch? There’s a strong chance it’s adapted from a novel. So whether it’s Harry Potter or Disney, encourage your child to discover the book behind the film. • Don’t dismiss comics or graphic novels. They’re an exciting and accessible introduction to the written word. • If the only way you can get them to read is on a Kindle or tablet, don’t despair. Any form of reading is better than none but set parental blocks to avoid online distractions.
