You will need

Wooden wine crate ¯ Plywood sheet ¯ Three hairpin legs ¯ Power drill ¯ Wood glue ¯ Four 3cm-long wood screws ¯ Seven 1cm-long wood screws ¯Basic toolbox

1Cut the plywood – or ask the hardware shop to cut it for you – so that it ts snugly inside the crate to form a shelf.

2Slide the shelf into the crate and mark on the sides of the crate where it will sit, then remove the plywood.

3Drill two pilot holes on either side of the crate for the shelf to screw into.

4Squeeze a line of wood glue along the edges of the shelf and line it up with the markings.

5Using the pilot holes in the sides of the crate as a guide, drill through the holes again, drilling right through into the shelf.

6Screw the 3cm wood screws through the crate and into the plywood.

7Mark the placement of the legs through the screw holes in the legs. Drill pilot holes, ensuring you don’t drill through the base of the crate, then install the 1cm screws to secure the legs to the crate.
