Cut the plywood – or ask the hardware shop to cut it for you – so that it ts snugly inside the crate to form a shelf. Slide the shelf into the crate and mark on the sides of the crate where it will sit, then remove the plywood. Drill two pilot holes on either side of the crate for the shelf to screw into. Squeeze a line of wood glue along the edges of the shelf and line it up with the markings. Using the pilot holes in the sides of the crate as a guide, drill through the holes again, drilling right through into the shelf. Screw the 3cm wood screws through the crate and into the plywood. Mark the placement of the legs through the screw holes in the legs. Drill pilot holes, ensuring you don’t drill through the base of the crate, then install the 1cm screws to secure the legs to the crate.

Top tip If you want your nightstand to have extra shelf space, just cut more plywood to size.
