HOW TO
style the look 1
Feature Katie Dutton
Warm, earthy tones like mustard and dark orange will make your work space feel more inviting. Contrast these warm colours with a neutral background to make them stand out, and to keep a sense of cool professionalism for those Zoom calls! Introduce plants at a range of levels, some desk height, some on the oor and some even hanging if possible. Studies have found that surrounding yourself with greenery can really boost productivity levels.

‘I don’t decorate just to look good; the important thing is to have a comfortable home that we can enjoy living in’
Style idea Put up a picture ledge to keep your most-used cookery books handy ‘This room is constantly changing. The dining table was originally under the pendant lights, but we moved it to be by the doors out to the garden, and then put the cuddle chair in the darker alcove to create a snug, which works better with the layout of the room. We’re also thinking of bringing the cocktail cabinet in here too’
I added pattern and colour TO EVERY ROOM Sarah Gibbons-Poole used her background in textile design to turn the plain rooms of her modern new-build into a colour- lled family home
Inspiring homes
Welcome TO MY HOME A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Sarah Gibbons-Poole, 35, a fashion merchandiser. I live with my husband, Chris Poole, 35, a digital IT manager, and our one-year-old daughter, Cleo Valentine. I Instagram our home updates at @step_into_no.17. WHERE I LIVE Our home is a detached four-bedroom house in Wickford, Essex. It was built in 2014 and we moved here in October 2016. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE Because it was a new-build, we didn’t have the renovation issues period properties often have, but the whole house was full of magnolia box-like rooms, so I needed to nd ways to add lots of personality. HOW I MADE IT MY OWN We both love colour so we did a few practical projects straightaway. I then chose paints, fabrics and home-made crafts to add character, pattern and texture to each space.
MY STORY We’re only the second family to have lived in this house, so thankfully it was in great condition, and it was nice knowing that everything was in working order. It felt like a house we could put our own stamp on, and it was a bonus that all the rooms were plain as it gave me a blank canvas to work with. Being a new-build, we thought nothing big needed doing, but actually there was lots we wanted to do. I love a roaring re, so the rst thing on our to-do list was getting one installed. It was actually really easy as it went on an external wall and only took the builders three days.
The kitchen hadn’t been tiled and we kept getting splashes on the walls, so that was the next job. We don’t have spare money to keep changing things to follow trends, so we picked traditional tiles as we wanted our big spends to go on classic xtures and ttings that would last. I’ve got a habit of starting things but not quite nishing them, so Chris encouraged me to do one room at a time. I worked my way around the house, giving each space colour on the walls, then I nished them o with bright furniture and accessories. We’ve managed to create a beautiful home that’s a true re ection of our love of bright colours!
Feature and styling Lisa Moses Photos Katie Jane Watson
MY FAVOURITE PART Probably the living room, purely because we put a lot of work into it and we spend most of our time there.
‘The kitchen area is the least colourful part of the house as we inherited it all as it is, but I do like how fuss-free it is. We chose the simple tiles as they matched with the neutral look’
‘The best thing with a new-build is that there’s no real building work to do’
Style idea A dining bench allows you to seat more people than bulky chairs and tucks away nicely at the end of a meal
16 yourhomestyle.uk
Kitchen ‘We didn’t choose the kitchen cabinets, but luckily I love them, and I’ll be forever grateful that the previous owners chose handleless doors as I love the clean, modern look they give. I do want to change the high gloss oor tiles. I’m sure they looked fabulous in the showroom, but I can’t keep them clean and most of the time they’re covered in cat pawprints. Chris called our last house the ‘Technicolour Dream Home’ and I promised him this house would be neutral and minimal, which is why we chose these classic wall tiles. However, I can’t help bringing colour into a room, so the neutral look didn’t go far beyond this part of the house!’
Inspiring homes ‘I bought this Cole & Son wallpaper from eBay but there was only one roll. I wasn’t sure where to use it, and initially thought it might go in the bathroom, but it works really well here. We bought the dining set o the previous owners as it works well in the space’
‘We call this our ‘Ca eine Station’. This was meant to be a utility room, but we both love co ee so we decided to make it into an area that would brighten our mornings. The ‘Oh Hell Yes’ prints are by the illustrator Rob Lowe’
Dining room ‘We wanted to give this room a big hit of colour so we decided to add some drama and go dark with this Breton Blue paint from Dulux. We love to entertain so we created the bar area in the corner by upcycling a vintage cabinet and adding IKEA shelves above it to store glasses. I like the way it makes people feel comfortable enough to go and help themselves, though Chris does love to make a cocktail. I love to create a fun tablescape when friends come round, and I’m still always amazed how much colour can transform a space. It’s a nice luxury having this as a formal dining room, but I think in the future we may turn it into a playroom for Cleo.’
make PLACEMAT p24
‘When we moved in, we committed the interior sin of decorating this – our leastused room – rst, but it’s been fun having a special space to entertain in, though the past year put a spanner in the works for that. It’s quite eclectic in style, combining the Eastern-inspired lanterns, vintage cabinet, and modern dining chairs, but it seems to work’
January 2021 17
HOW TO...
Tablescape Make mealtimes more special with a beautifully styled table
‘Colour coding my accessories on these simple IKEA shelves has turned them into a real statement piece of furniture, and nothing beats a rainbow in my eyes!’
Choose a base that complements the rest of the layout. Sarah has chosen a simple spotted tablecloth that balances out her bright colours, but you could choose a bright patterned cloth and layer with more neutral colours, or you could leave your tabletop uncovered for a rustic country-style look. Give each setting a table mat and layer up pretty china – matching or mismatched, depending on your look – starting with the largest plate, and nishing with a bowl, then place a coaster and glass to the side of each plate. Lay your cutlery and then nally add a napkin with a napkin ring, which can be a simple piece of twine or colourful ribbon. The centrepiece is important to a great tablescape and is where the fun starts. This can be as simple as a vase of fresh owers or, depending on the time of year, you can use eucalyptus and lots of candles for Christmas, decorated Easter eggs, or simple colourful pompoms like Sara – go as wild as you want with the theme.

‘I like to support local businesses where I can, so I chose this simple, classic stone surround from a place near us called Lower Barn Farm. It reminds me of the replace in my mum’s period property, but it also works well in this modern room’
Inspiring homes
Living room ‘It’s easy to think that because it’s a newbuild everything needs to be modern, but I don’t believe that. I really wanted to add charm and create a classic look, and once we had the replace installed and I’d put the mirror up over the mantel, I just wanted to run with the timeless feel in the room. The Oval Room Blue paint by Farrow & Ball is quite traditional looking, but it’s an easy colour to live with and it goes with anything we put with it, which is just as well as we’ve chosen a lot of di erent textures and colours for our furniture and accessories. I studied Textile Design at college and enjoy sewing so I’ve made most of the cushions myself. I love a clash of fabrics, and I get some great designer bits from leftover projects.’
Style idea Low-hanging pictures give a modern look
‘In my view, you can never have too many cushions’
‘Putting up the simple IKEA shelves gave me a chance to display the photographs and prints we’ve collected over the years. I particularly love the Cleo print, from Ivy Print Design. I got the leather sofa from my grandparents’ January 2021 19
‘The bedside cabinets are from IKEA, but I’ve changed the handles to give them an original twist. The bed was a cheap eBay nd’
Master bedroom ‘I always wanted this room to be mint green as it’s such a relaxing colour. I discovered a company called Rebel Walls who make printed wallpapers to the exact measurement of your room, so I talked to them about a design and they sent this gorgeous Jungle pattern. I’d never wallpapered before, but it came in strips that matched up exactly so it was easy to hang. I wanted to cover the whole room in plants, but I needed a way of adding them without distracting from the mural. I initially thought I’d have a long, high shelf but then I saw people using pegs in their hallways and thought I’d give it a go on the wall. They’re really e ective and the real hanging plants go really well with the mural behind.’
Style idea Keep bedding patterns simple if you have busy walls
‘I love a good clash of colour and pattern – no room is safe!’ 20 yourhomestyle.uk
Inspiring homes
‘This book storage is actually a repurposed spice rack. I created another gallery wall above it, especially for Cleo. The Hathi elephant table lamp is from Home Essentials’
xxx
Cleo's room
‘We chose neutral grey for the walls in Cleo’s room, which is quite unusual for us, but it’s a really calm, relaxing space. I wanted to add colour and make it fun with crafty bits that I made myself, like the bright edging I attached to the elephant lamp. Long-term, I want her to choose her own style when she’s ready so everything I’ve decorated with is removable. I made the tiny pompoms from wool and xed them on with Command strips. I’ve got paper pompoms dotted all around the house as they are such a cheap and easy way to add colour to any room, and they really stand out in the corner here, but they can easily be taken down if we want a change.’
POMS p22
‘The little tassels on Cleo’s toy basket look really e ective but I just made them from cheap wool I spotted in Poundland. The curtains are from Bluebellgrey – the design reminds me of a watercolour painting’
WHAT I LEARNED... It’s easy and cheap to decorate using colour and accessories. With good-quality, cheaper paint brands now available, it’s possible to update wall colours on a budget, and you can pick up cheap frames to mount your postcards to start o your own gallery wall. Don’t be quick to change the bigger items; live with them for a bit and see how you can make them work for you. I didn’t like the bathroom tiles, but with a coat of paint on the walls and my choice of accessories, it’s a room I can now enjoy relaxing in. ‘The landing is really dark, so adding this colour block of orange brightens up the space and I love the clash with the blue. The shelves are from La Redoute and the cacti and plants are from a local garden centre – they were so cute that I just went mad and bought them all’
Your home should be a re ection of you. We spend so much time here, especially over the past year, that we shouldn’t be afraid to make it our own. Very little can go wrong with painting a wall and if you don’t like it, you can always change it.

GEO TABLE MATS Make a meal of it and set up a stylish dinner, like Sarah, with these geometric linen placemats
Top tip
You will need
¯ Medium-weight patterned fabric ¯ Linen fabric ¯ Matching thread ¯ Scissors ¯ Basic sewing kit ¯ Iron
1
Cut a piece of linen fabric measuring 46 x 59cm. Lay your placemat linen piece out face-down – if it has a right side (RS) – and fold each edge over by 3.5cm. Press the crease, then fold over again by 3.5cm and press again.
24 yourhomestyle.uk h t l k
2
6
3 4
7
Unfold the second fold along each edge and then fold each corner in so that the rst crease meets the crease of the second fold. Press each corner to crease then unfold the corners. Turn the linen over. Bring the edges of one of the corners together so that the fabric is RS to RS and you have a 45-degree point. Pin across this point. Stitch along the corner crease you made – this will form a neat corner.
5
Trim away the corner and press the seam at. Repeat steps three to ve with the other corners then turn all corners RS out and press. Check the patterned fabric is the same size as the mitred linen – it doesn’t matter if it’s slightly smaller but it shouldn’t be larger. Trim the fabric if necessary. Tuck the patterned fabric under the linen edges and press with an iron. Pin and then sew around the linen edges 2-3mm from the inside edge, to nish.

‘Adding French doors where there used to be a window has made a huge di erence’
A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Laura Chambers, an inclusion manager and interior stylist at homebirdsinteriors.co.uk. I live with my partner, Craig, a sales manager, and our children: Rory, six, and Freddie, three. WHERE I LIVE We bought our three-bedroom 1930s semi in Hucknall, Nottingham, in October 2019, and moved in four months later. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE Everything! There were Artex ceilings and awful carpets throughout, but the pokey galley kitchen was de nitely the worst part. HOW I MADE IT MY OWN We’ve opened up the two reception rooms and kitchen, reinstated replaces and added family-friendly features like a ground- oor toilet and separate shower cubicle in the main bathroom. A colour scheme of white, grey, green and blush pink has been given an edge with industrial and boho touches.
Paint skirting boards to match window frames and kitchen units
MY STORY When we rst bought this house it was very rundown and needed modernising throughout. For six months we lived in a rental property while the sale went through and then the entire house was replastered, rewired and given new woodwork over four months. Luckily, we knew lots of good tradespeople as this is our third renovation. Knocking out two walls to make the kitchen, diner and living room all openplan was the biggest change. Installing French doors to the garden has made it much lighter too. We also squeezed in a downstairs toilet and changed the front
door. In fact, the only thing we managed to save was the replace in the dining area, which I revamped in pink and now love. If we were staying long-term, we probably would’ve extended at the back, however we didn’t want to spend too much time and money as we plan to resell the house in a few years. I still wanted to make it as nice as possible for the family though. I’m drawn to Scandi and industrial interiors but here we have a mix of traditional features too, like reclaimed cast-iron replaces, which we put in to add character. Eventually, we’d love to build a home from scratch, where I can be even more daring with the interior design.
MY FAVOURITE PART The transformation of the ground oor has de nitely been the most successful part as it works so well for family life. I’m so glad I splashed out on the indulgent tiles in the shower too.

‘My heart was set on having lots of crockery and accessories on display, so we added panelling and open shelving instead of extra wall units,’ says Laura. ‘Camaro LVT ooring throughout makes it feel a lot more open and I’ve added budget stools from Homebase to complete the industrial look’
‘ The kitchen feels really cosy and has the industrial look that I love’

‘The previous galley kitchen – with its dark brown units, peach walls and ugly boiler – had to go. Not only was it cold and damp, but it also led to an awful lean-to conservatory, which the previous owners used as a dumping ground. Blocking up two windows has made better use of the wall space for cupboards and we created a downstairs loo where the door used to lead from the hall to the kitchen. Our previous home had a blue kitchen, but I wanted to go more dramatic here so I chose graphite grey units from Inspirational Interiors. I’ve combined them with fresh white Scandi-style panelling, open shelving, brass accents and concrete pendants by Vaunt Design.’
Inspiring homes ‘Having moved here from a bigger house, we had to be clever with storage solutions so we went for taller-than-standard wall units,’ explains Laura
Dining area ‘With a dark brown re surround, yellowpainted alcoves and an ugly fan light on the ceiling, the dining room was pretty uninspiring. After it was opened up to the kitchen, I wanted to keep things fresh and bright, so I used Farrow & Ball’s Wevet on all the walls. Adding French doors where there used to be a window has made a huge di erence too. I now love the old re surround after giving it a lick of pink paint and lling it with logs. I’m quite proud of the grid mirror too. I upgraded it by glueing beading onto a cheap mirror from The Range and painting it with Farrow & Ball’s Railings. Similar designs cost over £100 but my DIY version was about £30 in total.’
Laura’s dining table and bench from her previous home have been given a makeover with new A-frame legs from The Hairpin Leg Company teamed with faux leather chairs from Cult Furniture. ‘It’s gone from a countrystyle farmhouse table to something a bit more industrial,’ she says. ‘The striking pendant light from Vaunt Design with its lovely wooden detailing ties it all together’
‘The replace is the only thing we kept,’ says Laura. ‘I just love Sulking Room Pink by Farrow & Ball and when I painted it, it brought the whole room to life. The herringbone cabinet from La Redoute in the alcove is great for storing papers and toys too’

Living room ‘After ripping up the patterned carpet in here, we got our builder to create a better focal point by opening up the replace and replacing the unused gas re with a wood-burner. Now the space is open-plan, it’s so much lighter and works brilliantly for both entertaining and family life. I picked two three-seater DFS Viv sofas from the So Simple range as they have a timeless, classic shape. They’re super spacious and can comfortably seat three adults. Since I wanted a touch of pink somewhere in the house and the boys didn’t want any in their bedrooms, I opted for one sofa in Quartz Blush and another in Steel Grey.’

‘Most of my cushions are from H&M Home as they’re great value and have loads of designs,’ says Laura. ‘I like mixing large block coloured cushions and a handful of boho and Scandi statement cushions at the front to create balance and interest. The artwork from Juniqe re ects my love of dried owers and is framed by wall lights from Iconic Lights’

Bathroom ‘With a poorly planned layout, making the best of our small bathroom was a real challenge. Fitting in a shower cubicle as well as a bath was our priority. In the past, when installing showers over baths, we had to experiment with di erent sealants to avoid leaks and even then we still found water coming through the living room ceiling once or twice. That wasn’t a road we wanted to go down again! The solution was nding a compact, free-standing bath that would t under the window, a short projection toilet and a clever folding shower door that opens inwards so it doesn’t encroach too much on the space. Swapping the inward opening entrance door for a sliding door was a great space saver too. In total we spent around £4,000 in here.’
‘Although I’ve generally tried to keep costs down by using standard metro tiles on most of the walls, the Lily Pad shower tiles from Ca’ Pietra were my little bit of luxury,’ says Laura. ‘They really make a statement and work well with the antique bronze shower from House of Enki’
Style idea Laying bigger, longer wall tiles creates a more spacious feel in a small room
HOW TO...
Plan a small bathroom Find space-saving solutions that work for you Simplicity is key. If there’s too much to look at, the space can start to feel enclosed and busy. Keep colours to a minimum – an all-white scheme with black or brass accents is a failsafe option with one statement piece of art – and use the same tiles on the wall and oor.
FACES p34
‘A free-standing bath from Easy Bathrooms was the perfect solution to free up space without compromising on style and luxury,’ says Laura. ‘Even though it’s compact, it’s really deep and a great place for unwinding at the xxx end of the day’
Stick to streamlined handless vanity units and recessed niche shelves sunk into the wall to keep the space feeling uncluttered. Wall-hung sanitaryware works best in a small bathroom, as being able to see more of the oor makes a space feel bigger. Mirrors are a great way to enhance the sense of space. A large mirror can be cut to t across an entire wall and is relatively inexpensive, or try a mirrored cabinet to maximise wall space. Wayfair has some great designs for under £100. If space is particularly tight, Easy Bathrooms sells a compact Lanester bath measuring 1,200mm x 700mm at £243.75. It may be small but it’s 420mm deep, so you can still enjoy a good soak. For a shower cubicle, brands like Merlyn, Novellini, Aquadart and Roman all have inward opening doors. January 2021 31

Rory's bedroom ‘The larger of the two front bedrooms was previously decorated in an awful lavender purple colour. So, we painted the walls in Strong White by Farrow & Ball, as well as sanding the oorboards and painting them grey. I let my little boy choose what he wanted. He picked a jungle-themed wallpaper from a few options I showed him. As it’s quite dramatic, I tried to tone down everything else and keep it neutral with a simple La Redoute rug. Adding in another reclaimed replace has made a big di erence too and I love the hearth we made with some lovely patterned tiles from Topps Tiles.’ xxx 32 yourhomestyle.uk

Master bedroom ‘Our bedroom design was centred around the gifted print from Graham & Green, which I wanted to make into a feature. I felt the natural rattan vintage-style bed from Time4Sleep would tie in well with it. The new dark panelling sets it o too. There was no replace before, so we found a reclaimed design on Gumtree and sandblasted it. Craig built a frame around it, so it looks like an original. Painting the walls in a warm light grey – Skimming Stone by Farrow & Ball – has tied everything together.’
‘We painted the reclaimed replace black for a more dramatic look and propped a mirror from Wayfair above,’ says Laura. ‘The wardrobe came from a furniture auction and I painted it pale grey when we moved here’
Style idea Ensure xings protrude out further at the top, so your artwork appears to hang straight over panelling
‘Our joiner made the panelling, which we painted in Studio Green by Farrow & Ball,’ says Laura. ‘The wall lights from Iconic Lights work really well against it, and I picked two £30 side tables from Wayfair to keep costs down. I love the face vase from H&M Home too’
WHAT I LEARNED... It’s essential to set a timeline when you’re project managing. We gave ourselves four months to renovate the house so getting a time frame for jobs from the various trades ensured all the materials were ordered on time. Having the smoke-stained uPVC windows spray painted rather than replaced has totally transformed the front of the house. It cost about £250 for a medium-sized window and we’ll be getting the company back to do the rear of the house as well. Sticking to your budget is important but don’t be afraid to have a few mini splurges here and there. It’s those things that will make a big di erence to the nal look.

FLORAL HOOP Flower arranging is so much more than putting a bunch in a vase – follow Laura’s lead and get creative with your display with this rustic oral ring
Top tip If you want your wreath to last longer, use dried or faux owers instead.
Extract from Wreaths: Fresh, Foraged & Dried Floral Arrangements by Katie Smyth and Terri Chandler. Quadrille, £14.99
You will need
¯ Sharp scissors ¯ Embroidery hoop ¯ Green orist’s tape ¯ Strip of linen or ribbon ¯ Green foliage ¯ Fresh owers
1
Cut your ower stems diagonally to about 8cm. Cut most of your foliage stems diagonally to about 16cm and leave a few of the more delicate stems slightly longer than this. Set aside one piece of foliage to add as a nishing touch – we used a jasmine stem, about 24cm long.
36 yourhomestyle.uk
2
Attach the greenery to the hoop – ruscus makes a good base foliage. Secure all materials using orist’s tape and pull it tight. The owers are grouped together at the bottom to provide a focal point, with foliage splayed out on either side. Add the other pieces one at a time, and make sure you cover the tape from the previous joining. Use tape around the stems to secure the owers to the ring. Add these in any order, but for visual impact it’s a good idea to add the larger blooms in groups. Here, the roses are close together, which
3
strengthens the visual balance of the wreath. Larger-headed owers also help to cover any areas of tape that might still be visible on the hoop. Finish your wreath by inserting a nal piece of foliage under the head of one of the larger owers, going in the opposite direction to the rest of the wreath. Something delicate, such as jasmine, works well. You could loop the hoop onto the side of a chair – this would be a lovely idea for a special dinner – or tie some linen or a ribbon to the top and attach it to a hook.

THE POWER
IS YOURS Having a smart meter installed is a small change that has big benefits for both you and the planet
T
he kitchen always has been, and always will be, right at the centre of every household. As the place where we prepare our food, it certainly serves a functional purpose – but it’s so much more than that. It’s the room where we spend quality time with our loved ones over a home-cooked meal, or enjoy a cuppa and a good chat with a close friend. And, more recently, it has even become a makeshift o ce. When your kitchen plays such an integral role in your home, it’s important to ensure it’s functioning as e ciently as possible. That means being aware of how much energy you’re using, from running the dishwasher to blending your morning smoothie. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to do this, and it won’t require you to make any big lifestyle changes. Enter the smart meter.
the handy in-home display unit. With this information, you’ll be more aware of the energy you use, so you can take simple steps to stop using – or paying for – more than you need. Did you know being energy e cient only requires small tweaks? Simply putting the lids on pots and pans when you’re cooking, for instance, can help make a big di erence as you won’t need to use as much heat. Over time, the nancial and environmental rewards will add up, making this small change more than worth your while.
Looking forward
Less is more Having a smart meter installed is a small change that can help you become more conscious of your energy consumption. That’s good news not just for your bills, but for your carbon footprint too. As a straightforward piece of technology, a smart meter can send your readings directly to your energy supplier and allows you to track your energy expenditure in near-real time, thanks to 38 homestylemag.co.uk

The quiet revolution
What happens next?
‘Forget farmto-table, counterto-table is the next food revolution’
Having a smart meter installed is a simple change that could really help you and the environment. Just take a look at the stats…
BBC Science Focus contributor and tech journalist Jennifer Pattison Tuohy explains how living pantries will feed the families of the future. ‘Within the next 50 years, your kitchen could be an integrated, self-su cient countertop farm, capable of growing its own fruits and vegetables watered by recycled grey water from your dishwasher and fed by nutrients from your rubbish bin. There are already appliances from companies like Miele and LG that provide the precise temperature, lighting, nutrients and water to produce enough fresh greens to feed a family of four a few salads a week. These types of ‘living pantries’ are healthier (vegetables lose 30 per cent of nutrients within 72 hours of harvest) and less resource heavy than traditional farming. Plus, they cut out the carbon costs of transportation and packaging.’
Beyond heating and hot water, kitchen activities account for about
30% of electricity demand in UK homes.
64% of people with smart meters feel more in control of the energy they use at home.
Britain could save a total of
£5.6 billion on energy bills in the next 20 years with a smart meter.
We could achieve
11% of the UK’s 2050 carbon emissions target just by taking household energy e ciency measures.

Being on a budget made us MORE CREATIVE With a passion for a bargain, Sarah Doyle is constantly switching up her style by upcycling second-hand pieces and charity shop nds
Style idea Update a sofa with an ever-evolving mix of throws and cushions
Inspiring homes textured wallpaper, which we removed. Since connecting with other homeowners on Instagram, I’ve de nitely become much more adventurous with colour. Going for dark green walls in the kitchen and dining space was quite a bold decision for me, but it works so well and is the perfect backdrop for all our art pieces. Not having lots of money to furnish the house has de nitely made us more creative. We’ve got used to mixing practical IKEA pieces with second-hand nds for a really unique style. I wanted our home to show that you can create a bespoke look on a limited budget, and that it can feel completely di erent to anyone else’s.
‘I wanted our home to look and feel di erent to anyone else’s’
Welcome TO MY HOME A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Sarah Doyle, a colour consultant, stylist and blogger @retwiggd. I live with my husband, Gavin, a senior VP for a software company and a part-time artist, and our children, Noah, 14 and Olivia, 10. WHERE I LIVE Our home is a three-bedroom dormer bungalow in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. We bought it in 2008. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE Every room needed to be updated. A lot of the house had originally been painted in a custard yellow, which hadn’t been changed since it was built. It also needed much more storage and the oor in the living / dining room needed replacing. HOW I MADE IT MY OWN I made some brave choices when it came to painting. Art plays a huge part in making a house feel like home to me, and I’ve lled the place with pieces I love, along with all my bargain nds. MY FAVOURITE PART The dining room. I love the dark green walls as they add a richness and character to what was once a very bland space.
WOODWARE p48
To pull the look together, Sarah sourced the deep green sheepskin from Nine Yards Design, which she teamed with a mix of cushions from one of her favourite Irish brands, Scatter Box. The oversized rug is from EZ Living Interiors and the leather pou e, which Sarah lled, is from Youbshop

MY STORY Having looked at several houses – none of which ticked the right boxes – we were persuaded to take a look at this timberframed bungalow. Stepping inside, it immediately felt warm and cosy and had a really good-sized garden with the added bonus of a beautiful 80-year-old cherry tree. The house was in good condition, but we didn’t like how it’d been decorated. After buying the bungalow, we didn’t have much money, so we mainly did cosmetic changes. We replaced the laminate ooring in the living/dining room and added built-in storage to all the bedrooms, the cloakroom and utility room. Every room had strange
Sarah’s clever eye and knack for styling is evident throughout her home. The little Indian-style table from Homebase and the IKEA lamp make this a cosy reading corner
Living room ‘Before, the living room was dull and dated without any character. To make it brighter, we replaced the oor and painted it in Ammonite by Farrow & Ball. Filling the room with lots of plants, colourful artwork and plenty of cushions has given the space so much warmth and personality. I’ve furnished the room with second-hand pieces that I’ve upcycled with chalk paint, which is a great way to give furniture a new lease of life. I dream of replacing the DFS sofas with green velvet designs, but they’re lasting so well I can’t justify replacing them any time soon.’

Inspiring homes Sarah has connected the two living areas together by painting the entranceway in green – the same shade that dominates the dining room. As well as linking the separate zones, it brightens up the living room’s white walls
The dining table was a wedding present that the couple updated by painting the legs in Graphite chalk paint by Annie Sloan. Around the table, Sarah chose a mix of pink chairs from EZ Living Interiors and blue chairs from Søstrene Grene
Style idea Di erent-coloured chairs bring an eclectic look to the dinner table
The drinks cabinet was a charity shop nd that Sarah painted in Graphite chalk paint by Annie Sloan. She added gold feet and used a Designers Guild wallpaper as a backing board. The same paper design was used to line the glass doors of the IKEA LIATORP white cabinet
Dining room ‘This was the rst room where I started experimenting with colour. It started when I won a competition by Stillorgan Decor for a Mylands Paint voucher. I knew I wanted to go green and was helped to pick the right shade – AGY23 – from their 900 colour collection. I’m glad I was brave enough to go for it, as this colour has completely transformed the space. As I love collecting old pieces of china, it was important that I had plenty of storage, and for an eclectic look I teamed an IKEA cabinet with two bargain units. To bring the space together, I tted an oversized pendant light over the table and introduced some extra colour with my deep blue and dusty pink velvet chairs.’

Upcycle furniture with chalk paint Get the most from this upcycling essential with these top tips If you want to create an aged, vintagestyle e ect on wood surfaces, use ne sandpaper to distress the piece. For an authentic look, concentrate on areas that would naturally get a bit of wear and tear, like corners and edges. Apply light pressure – it’s better to build up the look gradually. Sanding is also a great way to achieve a smooth nish, but go lightly. Give depth to your furniture piece with the two-tone distress technique. Apply two di erent colours on top of one another; wait to dry and lightly sand the top layer, which will reveal the rst colour layer underneath, instead of the woodwork. For maximum e ect, go for a darker shade on the bottom layer and contrast it with a lighter coloured topcoat.
Kitchen
The striking green paint used in the dining space is continued into the kitchen, including the doors and woodwork. The kitchen units are original to the house, but they’re on Sarah’s upcycling to-do list. However, other kitchen design details – like the ooring – have grown on her. ‘Funnily enough I didn’t like the terracotta oor tiles and was determined to change them,’ she says, ‘but the trend for them seems to be coming back, so maybe I was right to wait and not get rid of them.’
Because it’s water-based, chalk paint can easily be thinned or thickened. To thin, slowly stir the paint as you add water. To thicken, simply leave the lid o for some time and stir before using. To protect your piece, apply two coats of chalk paint wax. Use a lint-free cloth or bristle brush and work in small sections – this will seal the paint and protect the surface. Wipe o any excess and wait 24 hours before bu ng.

Master bedroom ‘To keep this space light and calm, we painted the walls in Great White and Peignoir by Farrow & Ball. The bed, from Irish chain Dunnes Stores, was originally brown leather and I had it upholstered in neutral fabric so it suited the space better. The IKEA bedside tables t perfectly at either side of the bed and they’re handy for displaying little knick-knacks. The blanket box was another charity shop nd – it was originally brown melamine and I painted it in green chalk paint and reupholstered the top. A shaggy sheepskin and cushions nish it o .’
Layering up sheepskin throws from Pavot Blue Interiors and cushions from a selection at Scatter Box helped create the cosy feel Sarah wanted in her bedroom. Style idea Attach coloured fringing to a lampshade for a designer look
‘Our house is constantly evolving. I’m always thinking of new ways to bring in more colour or how to rearrange a room layout’
Inspiring homes Sarah recently revamped her en suite, which is painted in Ashes of Roses by Little Greene. To freshen up the tiles, she used a grouting pen from Amazon. The towels and bath mat – along with the small drawers that t snugly under the sink – are from IKEA and the mirror was an auction nd
Olivia's room ‘This is a really cute space for a little girl,’ says Sarah. ‘We wanted to keep the space light and airy so we decorated with lots of accessories in pretty pastel shades and painted the walls in Teresa’s Green by Farrow & Ball. The bedside table was a skip rescue that I painted using a mix of tester pots and sealed with varnish. The oating shelves are from IKEA, and on the wall we put up some of Olivia’s favourite prints.’
The cosy feel is continued in Olivia’s room with layered rugs, scatter pillows and a string of coloured lanterns
WHAT I LEARNED... Pick a colour you want to run through your home. For us, that’s green and we’ve carried that through the rooms with accessories, upcycled furniture and lots of houseplants. Decorate with things you love – you don’t need to follow trends. Look through your wardrobe to see what colours you like – very often the colours you wear are a re ection of what you really love. I always feel happiest when I’m surrounded by nature, so having lots of plants and owers are my key to wellbeing in the home, particularly in the winter months. Use vintage and second-hand pieces to add character to your scheme. A new-build doesn’t have to be boring; you can easily add your personality with the little details. Sarah found the vintage dressing table at a Dublin ea market. ‘I fell in love with it and although it’s not massively practical it’s so beautiful. This is my French boudoir corner’

Make the look... WOOLY CUSHION Cosy up a sofa or chair, like Sarah, with this warm and fuzzy latch hook cushion. Why stop at just one?
Top tip If you’re new to latch hooking, practise using the latch hook and a scrap piece of fabric before you begin the project.

¯ Piece of thick card, 14cm wide ¯ Woollen yarn ¯ Scissors ¯ Latch hook tool ¯ Latch hook 44 x 44cm canvas ¯ Two pieces of backing fabric: 37 x 27cm and 37 x 20cm ¯ Pins ¯ Needle and thread ¯ 45cm cushion pad
1
Wind the yarn around the piece of card and cut the top and bottom to make a pile of short lengths of wool. Holding the latch hook in one hand, take one of your pre-cut wool pieces and wrap it around the shaft of the latch hook.

2
Push the end of the latch hook into a hole in the canvas and then out through the hole directly above it. The latch should be open here. Hold the two ends of wool together and position them between the latch and the hook. Pull the hook towards you and out of the canvas. The latch will close over the wool and you can then pull through to complete the knot. Pull on the two ends evenly to tighten. Draw a 27cm square onto your canvas – this is your working square. When you have nished latch hooking your square, you can now turn it into a pillow cover. Take your two rectangles of backing material and

turn over a 1cm double hem along one long edge on each piece. Pin and stitch the hem in place. Trim the latch canvas back to 2cm all around the edge of the worked section and fold into the edge of the wool section. Fold in a hem on three sides of the rectangle of backing fabric and pin across one end of the pillow. In this case you’re pinning the fabric with wrong sides together. Use thread doubled up to sew in an overstitch all around three sides. Add the other rectangle at the other end of the pillow in the same way. This rectangle should overlap the rst. Sew in position and ll with the cushion pad.

We did it ALL OURSELVES! Having never even painted a wall before, Becky Powley and her partner, Ro, learnt the skills to create their forever home
‘I go ‘wow’ every time I walk into our house. It’s such a nice feeling knowing we’ve done it all ourselves’
Inspiring homes
MY STORY The moment I walked into this house I had ‘the feeling’. The décor wasn’t to our taste and we quickly realised that the house was being held together by wallpaper, but it had good bones and I loved it, so we went for it. We had new windows installed straight away and then we redid the plumbing and the wiring and replastered throughout. We worked our way through the rooms, renovating each one until we got to the extension. We wouldn’t have classed ourselves as DIYers before, but we had quotes to lay the herringbone oor in the bedroom and the labour was as much as the materials, so we thought we’d give it a
go ourselves. It was a slow job and we had to be really patient, but we watched online videos, and though it was hard, it went well and we thought, if we can lay a herringbone oor we can do anything. We painted, decorated and tiled each room, and having done an Architecture degree, I even drew up the plans for the extension. We knew we wanted to extend even before we moved in, but the foundations weren’t as good as we thought so we had to do some underpinning. This was our rst project – and it was massive – but we’ve learnt so much, and created a beautiful home. I really believe, if we could do it, then anyone can!
Welcome TO MY HOME A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Becky Powley, a 28-year-old commercial estate surveyor. I share snaps of my home redecoration at @alittlevictorianrenovation. I live with my boyfriend, Ro Rimington, 30, who’s a lecturer, and our cat, Persia. WHERE I LIVE My home is a four-bedroom Victorian semi-detached house in Nottingham. We moved here in October 2018. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE The whole house needed renovating from the inside out, including plumbing, electrics, ooring, a new kitchen and bathroom… I could go on! HOW I MADE IT MY OWN We decided to do the work ourselves as we knew it could be a forever home. We weren’t in a hurry, so we researched each project and then slowly tackled each room, asking for help when we needed it along the way. We also added an extension, which has given us more space.
‘We couldn’t initially a ord to install a real re in here, so the builders prepared the replace for a log burner by adding brick slips and putting the mantel on for us, though it’s actually a plaster log, not a wood one, so it won’t warp over time. We’d built the extension before we bought the green sofas from HomeSense. They were too wide to t down our side alley, so we had to lift them above our heads and over next door’s fence to get them into the room’
Feature and styling Lisa Moses Photos Katie Jane Watson
MY FAVOURITE PART I love the extension. It has everything in it that we need, and we could actually just live in this part of the house if we needed to!
‘We had the black and wood shelves made speci cally to t this space by Outback Interiors. They did the most amazing job of matching the shelf line to the black line that goes around the room’
Style idea Fill an empty replace with good-looking logs
Snug ‘This was the original dining room and it only had a tiny window to let in light, and a side door to the back of the house. We knew we wanted a cosy, snug area in the extension and it made sense to put it at this end of the house where it gets the least sunlight. I originally thought about wallpapering this wall, but Ro wasn’t keen, so he came up with the idea of the black stripe around the room. I was a bit nervous initially as it’s so bold, but it’s worked really well, especially as by levelling the line with white you don’t notice that the ceilings are at di erent heights. I love the way it allows the bright colours of the furniture and accessories to really stand out.’ 56 yourhomestyle.uk
Inspiring homes ‘Painting the wall and shelves the same colour has given the room a consistent feel, but it also feels more spacious and sophisticated. I’m glad that we kept this as a formal living room, as at one point we discussed knocking through to include a dining area. We made the masks while travelling in Venice and the Hartley House sign is a letter board’
‘I’d seen a similar layout online, starting a gallery wall with two large, o -set pictures and then working your way along. I laid all the prints out on the oor rst, to get the positioning just right’
Living room ‘We were lucky that the previous owners allowed us to come and measure up while they were still living here, so we had new windows made and lined up to be installed just a few weeks after we moved in. We laid the oor and did all the painting ourselves, choosing this lovely Braze Blue by Craig & Rose for the walls. When it comes to decorating, Ro does the larger areas and I’m the ‘edger’ as I’m a bit of a perfectionist.’
‘We call this our travel wall and it’s really special as it’s full of pictures that we’ve picked up over the years. We had the map – from Oliver Bonas – framed and we only scratch o places we’ve been together, though it’s not quite up to date. I would call my style eclectically English, and this classic Chester eld-style velvet sofa – a bargain at £399 from HomeSense – is one of my favourite buys. The co ee table was left behind by the owner of our previous at’
January 2021 57
HOW TO... ‘We rst saw the units combined with these worktops in the Wren showroom and we both loved how sleek the design was. I also liked the fact that the doors were handleless which added to the unfussy look. Complementing the black with the light oor and white ceiling stops it feeling too dark’
Become a pro Follow these handy hints to help your renovation run smoothly, especially if you’re learning new skills as you go Invest in the correct tools for each job and buy the best quality you can a ord. Also, prolong the life of your tools by looking after them. Little things like always washing your brushes well and cleaning and putting away small pieces of equipment so nothing gets lost can really make a di erence. Do your research. There are hundreds of online tutorials that show you how to do almost any job you can think of. Also check out tips from other DIY homeowners on social media or DIY blogs, or ask a professional for hints. Becky and Ro asked their carpenter to show them how to do mitre joints – those ddly angled joints in corners – so that they could attach their own skirting. Make sure you always wear the right safety gear; think goggles, gloves and someone to hold your ladder. Be aware that some DIY may void certain warranties, so check your insurance before you start. Finally, weigh up the cost of your time and the money saved, compared with the cost of employing a professional.

Kitchen-diner ‘The original kitchen – which was very pink – was not to our taste at all. The kitchen design developed a lot as we lived in the space and as the project progressed. We liked the idea of keeping the steels exposed and a bit of the brickwork open. So, we decided to opt for something more modern and industrial, and this allblack, super-sleek option from Wren suits the space far better. It worked in our favour that the house needed a lot of work, as it meant we got it for a lower price. This freed up extra money to do the extension work, including creating the dining area, and we found great builders who had a perfectionist approach to the job. It was important that we liked them as we had to practically live with them for six months! We wanted to create a light, open space here with lots of glass at the back so that even on cold days we could sit and feel like we were virtually in the garden.’
Style idea This large decorative clock gives the wall a focus and breaks up the stark line of black paint
WOVEN TEXTILES p62
‘We bought this dining set from John Lewis & Partners because it had a bench, which is a much better option for an open-plan space than traditional dining chairs, as people can sit facing both ways’ January 2021 59
Master bedroom ‘We decided to renovate this bedroom before anything else to give us a nice base to live in and somewhere to relax while we were doing the rest of the work. We stole some space from the middle bedroom to make an en suite and restored the replace so that we could install a Hobbit log burner. We had a TV wired in so we could use the space as a short-term living room and had oor-to-ceiling tted wardrobes made. We decided to go full height with the wardrobes, as the top section is an often forgotten and unused but really useful space, and it’s perfect for storing spare duvets and blankets not needed every day.’
‘This room is quite big, so I use the space in the bay as a dressing area. I bought the yellow chair from a local selling site – it was the starting point for us being braver with colour. It was used by an independent restaurant as waiting seating for guests, but they needed the space for more tables and it was hardly sat on, so we happily gave it a new home’ 60 yourhomestyle.uk
‘We weren’t looking for a project, but doing this showed us that with patience, research and good tools, we can do anything’
Inspiring homes
‘We thought about having a stand-alone bath and squeezing a shower into the bathroom, but since we’ve put a decent-sized shower in our en suite we decided it would be better to make it more spacious. The shower over the bath is from Burlington’
make UPCYCLED NIGHTSTAND p64
‘In the spare room, I wanted to create a calm, sophisticated feel that was also relaxing for me to work in. I love the blush pink bed from Danetti, and the pendant bedside lights, which help give the room a hotel-luxe feel, which is nice when guests come to stay’
‘We laid the oor in here ourselves and that was the start of our DIY journey. We chose to oil it at home as going for an un nished product saved us about 30 per cent compared to similar, ready- nished products, and oiling it was a doddle!’
WHAT I LEARNED... That we are far more capable than we thought. This was our rst project and it turned out to be massive, but by being patient and doing the research, we managed to nish everything we set out to do, and we did it well! Get good brushes and you’ll never have to use masking tape again, which – though a popular solution for painting straight lines – often pulls o the paint so you end up having to do timeconsuming touch-ups. Don’t be scared of colour. We’ve gone for a really bold colour scheme on all of the walls, but if it hadn’t worked out we could have just changed it. It’s only paint after all.

You will need ¯ Wooden wine crate ¯ Plywood sheet ¯ Three hairpin legs ¯ Power drill ¯ Wood glue ¯ Four
3cm-long wood screws ¯ Seven 1cm-long wood screws ¯ Basic toolbox
1
Cut the plywood – or ask the hardware shop to cut it for you – so that it ts snugly inside the crate to form a shelf. Slide the shelf into the crate and mark on the sides of the crate where it will sit, then remove the plywood. Drill two pilot holes on either side of the crate for the shelf to screw into. Squeeze a line of wood glue along the edges of the shelf and line it up with the markings. Using the pilot holes in the sides of the crate as a guide, drill through the holes again, drilling right through into the shelf. Screw the 3cm wood screws through the crate and into the plywood. Mark the placement of the legs through the screw holes in the legs. Drill pilot holes, ensuring you don’t drill through the base of the crate, then install the 1cm screws to secure the legs to the crate.

A STOOL Revamp a tired-looking foot stool with a loved but little worn jumper, and give both items a new lease of life
74 yourhomestyle.uk
Feature Judy Rom
top tip We used a vintage jumper picked up from a charity shop, but you could also raid your wardrobe. If buying, look for a large size so you have plenty of fabric to work with
Upcycling challenge
Foot stools and small benches are so useful, and you can often pick them up second-hand for a few pounds. Whether their cushion has seen better days or it’s just not suited to your taste, this upcycle is the perfect winter project for upholstering newbies and dab hands.
Takes 60 mins you will nneed z Foot stool or small bench z Jumper with
a panel large enough to cover your stool z Staple gun and staples z Flat head screwdriver z Pliers z Scissors
1
Choose a jumper that suits your scheme, it will need to have a front or back panel large enough to cover your stool, then ip your stool over to start the transformation. Use a at head screwdriver and pliers to carefully remove the existing staples, without ripping the fabric. This is the most time-consuming part of the upcycle. If you can, leave the lining underneath attached so that you can reuse it. If yours is too tatty then remove the staples from this too. Carefully remove the old fabric as you’ll need to use it as a pattern. If you need to, carefully remove the lining fabric too.

Kilim upholstered solid wood foot stool in red, £39.99, Homescapes
4
Using the old fabric as a pattern, cut a panel from your jumper, avoiding any seams, then place it under your stool, lining up the edges. If you are replacing the lining, use the old fabric to cut a new one, allowing for a rolled hem on all four sides – we recommend using canvas or calico as they are hardwearing. Wrap the jumper around the stool as if you’re wrapping a present. You want a snug t but don’t pull so tightly that you overstretch the fabric. Staple this panel into place and trim o any excess. Reposition the lining on the underside of the stool, laying it on top of the jumper panel to hide the raw edges and stapling into place for a neat nish. If you are replacing your lining, fold a rolled hem on all four sides to stop it fraying, and iron the edges before you staple it into place.

CUSHY NUMBER Change up the sofa with a new set of cushions. Shop around for a bargain or get creative and make your own. DIY cushion-making kits are a good starting point for a quirky piece. Once you’ve learned the ropes, you can start making simple slip covers too. Dunelm’s feather cushion pads will last you a lifetime, and you can switch the covers every season. Upcycle your old tablecloths or curtains and your new cushions will cost next to nothing.
Style advice CHINA TOWN Give old plates and dishes a new lease of life by hand drawing new patterns on them with dishwasher-safe marker pens. You’ll fall back in love with the plates you once cherished when they’ve been perked up with a fresh look. Try a oral design or a few delicate leaves. If drawing isn’t your thing, uneven polka dots are a huge trend this year and they’re super simple to do!

HANDLE IT Changing cupboard handles makes a big di erence to how your kitchen looks. A simple switch to minimalist brass knobs will give the cupboards a sleek, modern look, but for a more traditional feel, cup handles will help to channel that cottagecore vibe. COAT SEASON Transform your kitchen by painting the cupboards a bold, new colour. The trend for deeply dramatic blue and graphite grey kitchens isn’t going anywhere so it’s the perfect time to update your look. If blue or grey aren’t your thing, khaki green will give the kitchen a modern lift too. And, if these shades sound too dark for you, classic country cream is a safe, but stylish choice.

STICK ‘EM UP Turn your tiles into a stylish feature by applying patterned tile stickers. We love the look of traditional Mexican and Portuguese tiles but buying and laying them often breaks the budget. Tile stickers update the look of your existing tiles quickly and cheaply, and you’ll be spoiled for choice when you start looking for colourful designs.
Style advice OPEN DOOR Re-painting internal doors is a simple way to introduce a new colour without re-decorating the whole room. Just remember to use a wipeable or washable paint as marks are bound to build up around the handle area. For a low-impact fun look, paint the very edge of the door for a surprising pop of colour each time you open it.

Style advice FRESH LICKS We’ve talked about changing the look of your tiles using tile stickers on page 78, but for a more subtle look, paint your tiles with a chic design. Annie Sloan’s chalk paint quickly covers old tiles in a range of stylish colours, and is very hard-wearing once it’s sealed in. I live in my paintings; wicker, bamboo, plants, orals, patternss and pastel colours. My interiors are ever changing, just like my art style. Revamp your radiators Replacing radiators can prove to be a costly job, so if yours have seen better days, why not rescue them instead?

W
WALLFLOWER VS WALL POWER For a radiator that’s in an odd place or not very attractive, painting it the same colour as the wall will help it to blend in and give your wall a slick, modern look. Alternatively, choosing a contrasting colour can highlight a good-looking radiator that’s just in need of a little TLC. Making a feature of your radiator is a quick and a ordable way to add a pop of colour to a dark corner or give a plain wall a vibrant look. HOW TO PAINT YOUR RADIATOR You will need Wood/metal paint or radiator paint (see our ‘Paint matters’ tips, right) in your choice of colour Primer (optional) Fine grade sandpaper Paintbrushes Solvent or brush cleaner
Method 1 Make sure your radiator is completely cold and clean o any dirt, grease and rust spots. Give your radiator a sand with ne grain sandpaper to create a ‘keyed’ surface – this helps the paint to stick. Be sure to sand o any rust so you have an even surface to paint. Once you have sanded, vacuum and then wipe your radiator with a damp cloth to remove any dust. 2 Apply your primer, if you are using one – check your top coat to see whether you need one. If you have removed any rust or have patches of bare metal then a primer is a must to seal the surface. Allow your primer to dry completely before moving on to your top coat; check the tin for timings. 3 Once your primer is dry, give your radiator another wipe and allow to dry. Apply your top coat in thin, even strokes, or follow the instructions on the tin if you are using spray paint. An angled brush is handy to get into any awkward bits. You may need to apply a second coat to achieve an even coverage. It’s best to leave 24 hours between coats to ensure the paint is fully dry. 4 Once you are happy with the colour, let the paint cure for 2-3 days (up to a week if you can) before you turn the radiator back on. There may be a bit of a smell for a day or two, so keep windows open and the room well aired.
PAINT MATTERS It’s important to ensure that the paint you choose is suitable for use on radiators as this means it’s less likely to chip or peel, or release nasty chemicals when you turn your radiator back on. Paints designed for use on wood or metal are generally suitable and your options include gloss, satin and eggshell. Some emulsions are suitable but check the can rst. You could also go for a specialist formula such as Ronseal’s Stays White satin radiator paint, priced at around £11 per 250ml. It has a one-coat application, dries quickly and is guaranteed to resist yellowing over time. You’ll nd some brands are also available as a spray for easy application: Rust-Oleum satin radiator enamel spray paint in White costs £3 for 400ml from B&Q. Always check the label to see if the paint is suitable for use on metal and if a primer is needed. Rust-Oleum satin radiator enamel spray paint in white, £3 for 400ml, B&Q

THE HEAT IS ON If you do want to replace a radiator, size matters. Luckily, there is an easy way to nd out how much heat is needed to keep your space warm. There are plenty of calculators online that can be used to work out the BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating, which you should be looking for. B&Q’s BTU calculator is really easy to use, and you can nd it under the Ideas and Advice section at diy. com. All you need to know is the type of room, the dimensions and the number of windows. Bear in mind that with a high BTU requirement, it’s usually best to use more than one radiator to heat the space. You should nd that radiators are labelled clearly with their BTU value, so you’ll know exactly what you’re buying.

Unless you have insurance to cover it… e all know how chilly the winter months can be, so imagine you wake up one morning to nd your boiler has given up on you and there’s no heating or hot water. This is de nitely a job for the professionals, so if you don’t want to pay a small fortune for parts, labour and callout fees, not to mention having to wait days or weeks for an engineer to visit, it makes sense to take out boiler or central heating insurance.

Some insurance also includes an annual boiler service, which is essential for an e cient, safe boiler in good working condition, but not all policies do, so always check before you sign up. Usually, you’re covered for any boiler repairs, including spare parts and labour, though some providers have a waiting period to prevent you from claiming at the start of a policy. If you are going to take out insurance, it’s best to get it in place sooner rather than later so you’re able to get help when you need it. Some service plans cover the heating system as well as the boiler, o ering added peace of mind. O You can spread the cost over 12 months if that suits you better. O A reminder is usually sent out letting you know that your boiler is due its annual service rather than you having to remember each time. O Spare parts are often expensive so having heating insurance can protect against unexpected costs. O Taking out an insurance policy usually means you get priority service, which guarantees that an engineer will visit quickly to sort out the problem. TOP TIPS
of it breaking down and leaving you without heating or hot water, you can also take out full central heating insurance. While it does cost more, it also covers plumbing and radiators. There are even fully comprehensive policies that also include electrics, drainage, roofs and pest infestation too. At its most basic, boiler insurance will cover the cost of a plumber to come out and x the problem at any time of the day or night; as well as the cost of replacing broken or worn-out parts. Some policies also replace the boiler if it can’t be repaired, as well as providing an annual service. Cover will vary between providers, so shop around to see what you get for your money. When it comes to getting the boiler serviced, Louise Murton, customer service director at Baxi Heating, recommends that it be serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. ‘An annual service is a condition of our boiler warranties,’ she explains, ‘so if you need a repair while your boiler is still under warranty, you will need to provide your annual service reports to show your warranty is still valid.’ For prices, it’s best to compare cover online at one of the comparison sites such as uswitch.com, moneysupermarket.com, moneysavingexpert.com or gocompare. com. At the time of writing, we found cover from as little as £2.50 per month with British Gas, with a £99 fee per callout but unlimited callouts. The cheapest policy with zero callout fee was EDF at £13.06 per month, again with unlimited callouts, so it’s always best to shop around for cover that suits your budget. A one-o service from a heating engineer should cost around £86.

I overhauled my bedroom FOR LESS THAN £500! In desperate need of a new look for her depressingly dreary bedroom, Laura Magee kept costs to a minimum by revamping what she had to create her perfect sanctuary
About me I’m Laura Magee and I live with my husband, Jonathan, and cat, George, in a four-bedroom Victorian property in Belfast. We’ve lived here since September 2018.
My room... MY PROBLEM BEDROOM When we moved in, the bedroom had horrible blue walls and a cream carpet, and it was really quite dreary. I wanted the space p to be bright and airy and full of fun statement décor. HOW I MADE IT WORK I lled the room with a collection of art, furnishings and textiles to bring my own sense of style and colour. I love mixing and layering textures, such as linen bedding with sheepskin throws and cotton pillows. MY FAVOURITE PART The replace is such a beautiful focal point, but I also love the bay window, where I often sit to ick through magazines.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home
REPURPOSE WHAT YOU CAN Follow Laura’s mend more and buy less attitude and revamp what you already have. If tted wardrobes or cupboards are in good nick and aren’t sacri cing unnecessary space, consider sprucing them up with paint, paper and new handles. Not only is this a more ecoconscious option, but it can be time- and money-saving too. Also, rip up grubby carpets that might be dating a scheme and restore original oorboards underneath.
BE REALISTIC WITH YOUR BUDGET It’s no good writing a wish list of designer items that take you way over budget; you’ll just end up feeling disappointed. Instead, make a list of non-negotiables to invest in, and from there you can gure out what you’re willing to compromise on. Browse second-hand shops and online selling sites like Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree for more a ordable yet good-quality items. You could even sell unwanted items yourself and use the funds to upgrade your space.
STYLE FROM THE SCREEN Watch your favourite movies and TV shows for design inspo. This can be especially helpful if you’re inspired by interiors from years gone by or exotic destinations, as you can hone in on the little details that complete the scheme. ‘I watched The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Great Gatsby for décor ideas,’ Laura reveals. There’s plenty of places o screen to spark your imagination too. Trips to restaurants or exhibitions, visits to friends’ homes or magazine cut-outs and social media can all stir up some great design ideas. 100 yourhomestyle.uk
‘My home is ever-evolving – it’s what I love about interior design’
Bedroom makeover Laura’s goal was to enhance the period features in her bedroomusing paint in considered colours. The dark grey she selected for the replace and wood trim contrasts with the white walls and makes them stand out
Lots of plants is key to Laura’s soothing bedroom scheme. Potted houseplants create the fresh and airy feel she was aiming for, while also adding calm and softness to the space
MY EXPERIENCE My motto for the bedroom revamp was ‘decorate, don’t renovate,’ as it already had really great bones. There were good-quality, sturdy wardrobes that were fully functional, a beautiful original replace and incredible bay windows. All of the elements were in place, they just needed a little tweaking. Visually, the room was drab and outdated with blue walls and a cream carpet. We had everything crossed that the original wooden ooring beneath the carpet would be in a good enough condition to leave exposed and, luckily, it was. We had it patched up and lovingly restored – our biggest challenge, owing to the age of the oorboards – and it instantly added warmth to the room. As the walls on the ground oor of our house are quite dark and dramatic, I decided to go light and fresh in the bedroom with a colour palette of pink and grey with elements of green. I chose Farrow & Ball’s Wimborne White for the walls, which took three coats in order to cover the original blue paint, and Down Pipe to highlight the replace and wooden period features. We already owned most of the furniture and accessories when we moved in, and I sourced curtains, plants, artwork and new handles to spruce up the wardrobes and give our space that art deco meets modern retro mash-up I’d been hoping for. All in all, the makeover took around a week from start to nish. It’s had a big impact on my life – there’s nothing better than waking up on a Saturday morning, sipping a co ee and watching the sun stream into my dream space.

A DREAM OFFICE
With some on-trend accessories and clever storage solutions, Lisa Weaver has turned her once cold and empty garden shed into a stylish and practical working from home space
About me I’m Lisa Weaver, 40, an interior designer @lisaweaverhome. I live with my husband, James, and our two children, Arlo, four, and Charlie, who is 18 months old. We live in a four-bedroom end-terrace house in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
My room... MY PROBLEM OFFICE We didn’t have a spare room that we could use as an o ce, but we did have a shed in our long garden that could be converted. I was studying at the time and knew I’d need to be away from the kids in order to do that properly, as well as give me a creative space that I could eventually work from. Thankfully, we nished just before lockdown, so it’s been a lifesaver. HOW I MADE IT WORK I knew my husband would never agree unless it was an o ce space for both of us, so I had to include two desks and a comfy area to relax in. I also included a fridge, which is perfect in the summer months. I wanted to keep it light and bright and add colour with accessories. MY FAVOURITE PART The desk I designed and had made, which includes A2 paper storage, has worked out really well as I found it di cult to nd exactly what I was looking for. The space has been brilliant as my drawing boards would normally take up a standard-sized desk, and this means I don’t have to keep putting them up and down and can do other things on the desk at the same time. 104 yourhomestyle.uk

GET ORGANISED ‘When you’re working from home, good storage and organisation is essential. I bought this old sideboard from eBay for just £40 with the intention of upcycling it. During some downtime, I was able to strip it back and update it with a lick of paint in my favourite colour and new brass handles.’ Lisa has made use of the unit’s shelves to store all her mags, les and swatches, but kept it looking stylish with lots of faux plants and decorative touches.
MADE TO MEASURE Lisa searched everywhere for the right kind of desk, but with a very tight budget she decided that a custom-made one would work better. ‘I was able to use some old kitchen worktops as the desk surface and the carpenter created some handy under-desk storage that was the perfect size for stashing my moodboards and sheets of paper. We even had enough materials left over to create a small shelf, which sits neatly above the desk,’ says Lisa.
MAKE IT COMFY When you’re working from home full-time, it’s important to create a breakout area where you can relax. Lisa included a two-seater sofa with cushions and throws so she could enjoy some time away from the computer. She also made sure that she included lots of prints, plants and lights to keep the room bright and an inspiring place to work. ‘I think the space worked so well for us because I kept it practical but also stylish,’ says Lisa. ‘Even if you’re only working at the kitchen table, it’s important you feel inspired and comfy – so grab a cushion and throw for your chair and some pretty stationery to keep you motivated.’ 106 yourhomestyle.uk
‘With lockdown, our o ce shed has been a lifesaver’
O ce makeover It’s important to have a good chair when working from home and Lisa found these elegant white leather designs from Wayfair. ‘I’m surprised just how comfy they are,’ she says. ‘I threw a couple of faux furs over the seats for extra warmth as the days got chillier’
Kilner jars and old glass bottles make great storage for o ce essentials. Update them with spray paint or a length of pretty string tied around the lid and ll with a stash of colourful stationery
Style idea Faux plants are a great way to add a bit of green without the fuss
MY EXPERIENCE There wasn’t an obvious place to use as an o ce in our house, but because we have such a good-sized garden, we decided to convert the old shed into an o ce space where we could both work. We had the shed weather-proofed, insulated for warmth and hooked up with wi and electricity, which took about three months to nish. Once all the big jobs were done, I started planning how the space should look. I wanted a practical area where I could design and work comfortably and a cosy space where I could meet clients or have a break with a cup of tea. With that in mind, I started to play around with layouts and colour schemes, using magazine cut-outs and making my own moodboards. The room lent itself to a long desk, but I couldn’t nd what I was looking for anywhere. So, I designed what I wanted myself and a local carpenter made it up from MDF and an old kitchen worktop. I decided to keep the walls white, but introduced colour through accessories, prints and an upcycled sideboard, which I painted. Little did we know that while we were coming to the end of the makeover, there would be a lockdown and working from home would become the norm, so the shed has been a lifesaver. We were lucky to be able to work in a dedicated space, especially as I felt that I was actually leaving the house to go to work. The space is so calming, and it really feels like a little retreat away from the rest of daily worries.

TRANSFORMED THIS ROOM Keen to style up the bland décor in her rented home, Hazel Carruthers hasn’t let being a tenant limit her vision for a moody exotic-inspired living room
About me I’m Hazel Carruthers, owner of Avalana Design @avalana.design, which specialises in wallpaper murals, cushions, lampshades and art prints. I rent a three-bed 1930s semi in Astley, Manchester, with my ancé, Derek Simpson, and our dogs, Zak, Deggy and Vinny.
My room... MY PROBLEM LIVING ROOM As I design wallpaper, the rst thing that had to go was the dated Laura Ashley cream and lilac oral wallpaper in the alcoves. I also wanted to ditch the cream curtains, which cut o the bay window and made the room feel smaller. The landlord’s chunky brown leather sofas dominated the space too, so I made sure he didn’t leave them behind when we moved in! HOW I MADE IT WORK I started with an Eastern-style wall mural then brought out the rich jewel tones with an emerald green love seat, mustard sofa and coral chair, all in velvet. Gold accessories, black bamboo lanterns and animal print cushions really lift the space. MY FAVOURITE PART It’s got to be the dining area with the mural behind. We love eating there with lamps and candles lit. It feels like we could be in a little boutique restaurant somewhere.

MAKE REVERSIBLE CHANGES ‘Our landlord is happy for us to decorate, as long as we change it back before we leave,’ says Hazel. ‘I’d love to go dark, but the last thing you want to do when you move out is paint ve coats of white emulsion. Luckily, the wall mural can be peeled o in panels so it’s much less hassle and it could even be reapplied elsewhere. As renters, it’s a good idea to invest in things that you can easily take with you – like accessories – that will work in another space.’
CREATE A CO ORDINATED LOOK Removing the heavy cream curtains has made space for an emerald green velvet love seat, which matches the dining chairs. ‘To make the window area tie in with the Japanese feel, I asked the blind tter to create a shutter e ect by adding black tape,’ says Hazel. ‘And I picked furniture with gold legs to tie everything together.’ Animal prints and botanicals make for a failsafe combination in the space, while elements of black give the new-look living room a designer luxe look.

Hazel also sprayed the grey IKEA boxes in black and gold leafed the handles for a designer look. ‘You can’t go wrong with black and gold, which always looks more expensive than it is,’ says Hazel. ‘I’ve even given Clive the skull a makeover. Originally a white money bank from Urban Out tters, he’s now champagne gold and has been decorated with black glitter henna art so he ties in with the rest of the scheme perfectly.’ 112 yourhomestyle.uk
‘A holiday in Costa Rica – with its rich natural habitat – inspired my first wallpaper and fabric collection’
Living room makeover Hazel had a piece of reclaimed wood cut to size and stained to nish o the replace. She also splurged on a gold window mirror as it was the perfect size for this spot
The couple ditched their old grey sofa as the space needed a pop of cheerful colour to break up the grey mural behind. They opted for a coral feature wall to pick out the colour of the lilies and birds from the other mural opposite
Style idea Add a large mirror in a north-facing room to bounce light around
MY EXPERIENCE After starting Avalana Design in 2018, we moved from Salford to this larger rented house further out of Manchester. The living room was rst on the agenda as it’s where we spend most of our time. I wanted somewhere that would double as a showroom and meeting space where I could show o my products. Installing one of my newly launched murals across the alcoves and chimney breast was my rst job. The design was inspired by ancient Eastern art with great blue herons wading through a lily pond. Because of that, there’s a nod to Japanese and Chinese styles throughout the room. As it’s north-facing, the golden tones and raw silk textures bring a much-needed rich warmth. Next, I bought a golden mustard sofa, emerald green love seat and coral chair to add pops of colour. Having three di erent backdrops works well for my business photography. I also created a dining zone by mixing up a table and chairs from di erent sets, upcycled an IKEA shelving unit and put up a wooden beam above the replace. I’m also planning to upcycle my drinks cabinet and switch up the grey rug to a bold geometric design. Starting a business has been an exciting journey and I’ve enjoyed collaborating with other local makers on footstools and a luxurious dog bed, which are two of my favourite features in the living room. In the future, I’d love to donate a percentage of sales to conservation charities too. Although our priority is saving up for our wedding next year, I can’t wait until I own a house and can do whatever I want!

S tyle advice Let accessories shine While this look is associated with green colours, consider painting your walls in soft neutral shades, like an o -white. This will allow colourful accessories in the space to really stand out and you’ll be able to carry o other stand-out features – like a statement mural – more easily. Unless you have wooden oors, choose light, subdued colours for carpets and tiles.

1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas Mark 6. For the peanut chutney, put the peanuts in a roasting pan with 1 tsp salt and garam masala and put in the oven to toast as the oven heats up. When lightly browned, set aside. 2 Place the sh in a dish. Mix the yoghurt, harissa and a generous pinch of salt together – taste and add more harissa if you like it spicy. Pour the yoghurt mixture over the sh, gently rubbing it in, and leave to marinate while you prepare the sweet potato. 3 Put the sweet potato wedges in the roasting pan, add the olive oil and toss together very well. Add the chilli powder, cumin seeds and garlic, season with salt, mix thoroughly and bake for 15 minutes. 4 Give the sweet potatoes a good shake and add the sh to the roasting pan: either push the potatoes to the sides of the pan and put the sh in the middle, or put the sh on top of the potatoes. Return to the oven for 15 minutes until the sh is cooked. 5 Meanwhile, make the chutney. Put the spiced peanuts into a food processor (reserve some to garnish at the end) with the coriander, lime juice, sugar, chilli and onion and whizz everything together to a smooth paste. 6 When the sh is done, sprinkle with the reserved roasted peanuts and serve hot with a dollop of peanut chutney. Serve with naan bread or rice if you like.

IN CONVERSATION WITH
Miriam Tyrangiel We talk to the creator of ethical bed linen label Undercover about the ethos behind her beautiful brand How did it all begin? For quite a while, I struggled to buy bed linen, and began to feel uneasy supporting companies with an opaque supply chain. The options on o er were either low quality or uninspiring, which isn’t great when you consider we spend a third of our lives in bed. I wanted to create a brand with a story that spoke to me, designing products that are ethically made, using high quality, sustainable materials and have a contemporary look and feel, all at a fair price.
Describe your typical day
Undercover’s ethos is all about sustainability and quality, with founder Miriam keen to create bed linen that’s loved for years to come
Every day is di erent and that’s what I love about my job, it’s incredibly varied. I might spend my morning reviewing colour swatches for a new range and analysing results from an online marketing campaign. In the afternoon, I’ll be optimising some operational processes with our warehouse and catching up with admin. I try to incorporate a workout into most of my days, being active gives me lots of energy.
What does the rest of the year hold for you?
Feature Alison Davidson
I’m working on expanding our existing range to more sizes so we can sell our bedding in more countries (every country has di erent bed linen sizes!). I’m also looking at bringing out some new styles further down the line – watch this space!
Describe your style I love understated, modernist design, mixed with occasional bright pops of colour.

Can a home be both stylish and practical? Of course. If it’s not practical, it won’t endure. If an item is too ‘stylised’, chances are you’ll grow tired of it soon so I try to make decisions based on longevity: will I still love this item in six months or in ve years?
Who are you stalking on Instagram? I love following @thedesign les – they always feature such interesting homes and designers. I’m also a fan of German design blogger @herz. und.blut and artist and illustrator @CatherineLavoie.com_
Where do you find your inspiration? Inspiration can come from anywhere. I try to expose myself to lots of di erent in uences – in interiors magazines, on Instagram, in fashion, graphic design and architecture – but sometimes it’s taking a step back from work and having a receptive, positive mindset that nurtures the best ideas.
What’s your proudest career moment? I have a lot to be grateful for. There have been so many exciting moments since I launched Undercover but the most rewarding thing is when I receive positive feedback and repeat orders from customers. To read more about Undercover and shop their full range of gorgeous bedding, visit www.undercoverliving.com or @undercoverliving
