W
hat was your New Year’s resolution? Go to the gym more? Take up golf? Try exotic foods? How about picking up and reading our latest edition of Australian Car Mechanic? It’s certainly an easy one to fulfill, especially since most resolutions tend to abandoned by March. The year is in full swing, and it’s certainly an exciting one for the world of mechanics. More than ever, the industry is on the precipice of immense change. Whether it’s the huge increase of electric vehicles or the emphasis on bolstering a healthy apprentice pipeline, there’s many issues mechanics are grappling with. In this edition, we look at some of those issues and the companies, associations and individuals looking to tackle them. But it’s not just all serious business for mechanics, as per usual. If you need a coffee (or five) to get
through the day, you’ll love our feature on Coffees and Cars by contributing writer Iain Curry. He does his best Seinfeld impression as he checks out some cracking cars on the streets of Coolum. Summer 4x4 escapades may be over and done with for another holiday season, but Iain’s whipped up some awesome pieces with Jeeps, Jimnys and Nissans hitting the great outdoors. Some of the blokes in these features are the top guys you want when off-roading, and certainly made me feel like Jeremy Clarkson during a road trip in Top Gear. But a vehicle is only as good as the parts that make it, and we look at a plethora of brands and their latest wares built to tackle all kinds of environments. So, if you need fuel to keep you motivated in 2024, get some coffee and roll your eyes over this bad boy.

d e p p i u Eq to succeed Australian Car Mechanic talks with MTA NSW about how businesses can make the most of their membership with an industry association
In a time where costs to mechanics are skyrocketing, MTA NSW looks to give them a hand with its wealth of business and training knowledge.

I
t’s a time of tremendous change in automotive industry. Between the rise of new technology and servicing methods, new consumer attitudes and government regulations, the work of technicians has transformed (and doubled) overnight; meaning that now, more than ever, it is important for your business to remain in-the-know on the latest trends, risks and opportunities. To add further pressure, it’s getting tougher to run a business. With inflation hitting and costs skyrocketing for rent, insurance, payroll, materials and everything in-between, getting the most bang for your buck is on the mind of every business owner. Unfortunately, utilising professional services is often not a priority when tightening our financial belts; but not having sound advice and the right kind of representation can really hurt the bottom-line.
Fuel for the future A member body such as the Motor Trader’s Association (MTA) is a way for you to save money, get support when you need it, and stay one step ahead. But which one? Australian Car Mechanic talks to one of the biggest, MTA NSW, to find out more… The Motor Traders’ Association (MTA) is a not-for-profit membership association that represents the interests of the automotive industry in Australia, supporting a wide range of businesses with advice, training, service and products, on top of advocating and lobbying on important industry matters at the highest levels of government. While working at a national level for the benefit of the whole auto industry in Australia, the MTA also has statebased chapters around the country, allowing the relevant associations to work directly with state government and policymakers on matters that directly affect members in their www.mechanics-mag.com.au | AUSTRALIAN CAR MECHANIC

ON THE COVER state, such as budgets and updates to consumer guarantees that will impact local businesses. Like the industry itself, the MTA has transformed in recent years and looks very different to what you might have seen even five years ago; offering a more modern, relevant and beneficial organisation, focused on the needs of its members. In a nutshell, the MTA is there to help its members and the wider industry grow, develop and be heard – on top of offering a huge number of business-critical services, resources and equipment. MTA NSW CEO, Stavros Yallouridis, explained why membership is a great way to protect and assist your business. “MTA NSW is one of Australia’s leading membership organisations,” he said
“Not only are we the voice of the industry, we provide a full range of services designed to support business owners and staff in the automotive industry. “Regulatory, compliance, work health and safety (WHS), employee relations (ER), legal, and complaints: we are a one-stop shop. “As a not-for-profit trade association, everything we do goes into providing the best possible support for our members.” He continued, “there is a lot of pressure on the Australian industry right now, with a proliferation of new vehicle technology entering the market, which requires greater levels of business investment in terms of time, money and resources. “MTA NSW is there to ensure members, and the wider auto network, aren’t left behind.”
Mechanics who’ve used MTA NSW as a resource have found the returns to be hugely beneficial to their operation(s).

Specialised approach As a registered training organisation (RTO) MTA NSW also leads the way with vocational training and apprenticeships, which it implements in a flexible, in-house way to benefit students and their employers and reduce downtime between training sessions and work. Considering the dollars and cents, MTA membership also makes a lot of business sense, thanks to discounted products via its member-only online store. This is all just part of the service, says General Manager – Membership and Sales, Jason Steporowski. “If you consider the savings our members receive through discounted products, employment relations and legal advice, business insurance, and other types of support, the cost of membership is incidental,” he said.
“The more our members use our services and support teams, the more they save.”
Joining a member association: what are the benefits? While member associations represent industry in the halls of government, at a business level, they also offer useful products and services, often at dramatically reduced rates compared to individual providers. So what do you get for your membership fees? For starters, MTA NSW assists members in staying compliant with current regulations, offering both employment relations (ER) and workplace health and safety (WH&S) teams to help members navigate a multitude of employment and workplace matters, including awards and remuneration, leave entitlements, work
cover and unfair dismissal claims. Similarly, its legal team also offers a broad range of support that includes Fair Trading issues and Australian Consumer Law, nonpayment of goods, contracts and commercial arrangements, as well as offering members a suite of user-friendly customisable business documents and forms, with the option of a legal review once completed. The association can also offer interpretation of regulation and legislation, consumer complaint escalation support, and even mediation on tribunal matters before tribunals, such as NCAT.
Learn from the best As we mentioned before, MTA NSW is an RTO, and provides a one-on-one, on-site approach to learning, using your workshop’s own tools. The association is already rolling out training modules on electric vehicles too, to ensure
the industry is up to date with this important new technology. Finally, let’s not forget the all-important ‘association’ part: MTA NSW members also get invited to attend a range of in-person and online events to discuss industry matters, share developments in best-practises and changes in regulation and, of course, network. Whichever one you choose, joining a member association can make a lot of business sense – whether it’s getting the right advice or saving money on the things you need, joining your industry colleagues could be just the ticket to safeguarding your business, along with taking it to the next level. To find out more, check out mtansw.com.au or call 02 9016 9000.

ual Action has a huge range of multi-purpose impact sockets and accessories which are manufactured for strength, precision, and versatility. Each socket is made of chrome-molybdenum alloy steel and undergoes an independent quality control program to ensure that each socket matches world-class standards. Perfectly suited to the automotive market, Dual Action impact sockets provide users with convenience and flexibility. The same Dual Action sockets can be used on either a hand tool or an impact wrench which traditionally would have required two different socket sets. Impact sockets have strength but are typically bulky and hard to place into tight areas, where as chrome sockets are slim, they do not have the structural integrity for use with an impact wrench. Dual Action impact sockets are a combination of these two kits into one, as they are specifi cally designed to withstand the physical force applied when using an impact wrench, whilst still having thin walls to allow access to hardto-get places. Dual Action is a one-stop-shop when

B
remtec Brakes, a world-class braking brand, now manufactures its brake pads without copper, as part of the company’s move to make it products more environmentally friendly. “Traditionally, copper is used in the manufacturing of brake pads as it is a durable metal that dissipates heat quickly,” CoolDrive Auto Parts Brake Division Category Manager Steve Kreti said. “The faster the pads dissipate heat, the cooler they run and the better they resist fade. As a result, this improves pedal feel, stopping distance and braking safety. “As brake pads are used, microscopic brake dust particles enter our environment; and with copper not breaking down, it can settle in our waterways and soil, causing long-term harm.
“With this in mind, for the past few years, the team at Bremtec have been developing and trialling new formulations that still deliver the ultimate braking performance but are manufactured without copper.” “With this in mind, for the past few years, the team at Bremtec have been developing and trialling new formulations that still deliver the ultimate braking performance but are manufactured without copper.”

Always prepared Coil spring conversion kits – a deeper look
T
he demand for vehicles with air suspension is steadily growing because of their beneficial features contributing to vehicle safety, stability and driving comfort. There are also car owners who choose to remove the vehicle’s air suspension system and convert to traditional coil spring suspension. What could be the reason behind this choice? In this short article, Arnott will explain what the advantages and disadvantages are of converting a vehicle from air to coil suspension.
Advantages of conversion While air suspension provides a smooth ride and load leveling, there are reasons why car owners prefer to remove their air suspension systems. The main drivers for
this decision are usually cost of ownership and usage. For aging vehicles especially, the value of the vehicle and expected remaining time of ownership can play a key role in making the decision to install a coil conversion kit instead of repairing air suspension system defects. Sometimes converting to coil springs is simply the least expensive option. Another reason to go for a coil conversion kit could be that the vehicle is going to be used in long road trips, safaris, or similar expedition trips where there is extreme weather or little possibility of an air suspension repair along the way. Converting from air to coil can be a viable option at that point because it eliminates rubber components and uses traditional steel coil springs in the suspension instead.
Conversion kits are ideal for vehicles being used on longer drives, or to equip them for extreme weather.
Disadvantages of conversion Losing the beneficial characteristics of air suspension – additional safety, stability and comfort are clearly the biggest disadvantages of converting a vehicle from air to coil spring suspension. Customers who tow larger trailers or often carry large loads are advised to keep the air suspension system to maintain benefit of the automatic auto-leveling functionality. Coil springs are designed to provide an excellent ride within certain boundaries. If a converted car carries heavy load, the springs will sag. Consequentially, the reduced suspension travel will affect the driving comfort (harsher ride, possibility of bottoming out), the balance of the car, and the reaction of the vehicle to steering inputs. Additionally, it affects wheel alignment eventually causing irregular tire tread wear.
Arnott’s coil conversion kits For older vehicles or those with a multitude of air suspension system issues, Arnott offers coil spring conversion kits expertly designed to replace a vehicle’s failing air suspension components with traditional steel coil springs and matching struts and/or shocks. All of Arnott’s coil springs conversion kits are made in the U.S. and are designed and road-tested to provide a smooth ride along with many years of trouble-free driving. These kits can be installed without special modifications to the vehicle. Many of Arnott’s kits include an Electronic Bypass Module (EBM), which is designed to eliminate suspension dashboard warning lights/fault codes. 18

Turning the valve The road ahead for transmissions
A
s an introduction to readers, my name is Jeffrey Richards, I am the National President of the Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers (IAME). I been working in the automotive and transmission sector for around 55 years, specialising in a range of services within the area of automatic transmissions, servicing and rebuilding. This article will focus on the rise of nine and 10 speed transmission manufacturing. The automotive industry has witnessed a remarkable evolution in transmission technology over the years. One of the significant advancements has been the proliferation of multiple-speed transmissions, with manufacturers increasingly rolling out nine to 10-speed variants. This shift represents a departure from the traditional four to six-speed transmissions that were once standard in vehicles. But what’s driving this trend, and why are manufacturers gravitating toward more gears?

One of the primary reasons behind the adoption of higher gear counts is to enhance both fuel efficiency and performance. With additional gears, engines can operate more efficiently across a broader range of speeds. By spreading the power delivery over more gear ratios, engines can operate closer to their optimal RPM (revolutions per minute), leading to improved fuel economy.
AUSTRALIAN CAR MECHANIC | www.mechanics-mag.com.au
Simultaneously, more gears allow for smoother acceleration and a seamless power delivery, offering drivers a more refined and responsive driving experience.
Meeting stringent emission standards Stricter emission regulations have been a driving force behind the automotive industry’s pursuit of more efficient technologies. Higher gear counts help in reducing emissions by enabling engines to run at lower RPMs during cruising, where they tend to be more efficient. This contributes to lower overall emissions, aligning with the stringent environmental standards imposed globally.
Balancing performance and fuel economy Another critical aspect is the balance between performance and fuel economy. Multi-speed transmissions afford automakers the opportunity to offer vehicles that provide both exhilarating performance and impressive fuel efficiency. The broad range of gear ratios allows for quicker acceleration when needed while maintaining lower engine speeds during highway cruising.
Enhanced driving dynamics From a driver’s perspective, more gears often translate to a smoother and more responsive driving experience. Quick and precise gear
changes ensure the engine remains in its optimal power band, enhancing overall vehicle dynamics. This not only results in better performance but also elevates the comfort and control felt by the driver.
Technological advancements Advancements in transmission technology and materials have made it more feasible and cost-effective for manufacturers to produce transmissions with higher gear counts. Improved manufacturing processes, along with the use of lightweight materials and sophisticated computer-aided design, have allowed for the creation of more compact and efficient transmissions.
Competitive Edge and Market Demand In an increasingly competitive automotive market, offering vehicles with higher gear counts has become a distinguishing factor. As consumers become more conscious of fuel efficiency and performance, manufacturers vie to meet these demands by equipping their vehicles with advanced transmission systems. Additionally, as rival companies introduce vehicles with higher gear counts, it compels others to follow suit to remain competitive.
Looking Ahead The trajectory of automotive transmission technology seems inclined towards further advancement. The development of even higher gear counts or the integration of alternative transmission systems, such as continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) or electrically assisted transmissions, are shaping the future of automotive drivetrains. The shift towards nine to 10-speed

transmissions in the automotive industry is driven by a convergence of factors, including the pursuit of efficiency, meeting stringent regulations, enhancing driving dynamics, and satisfying consumer demands. As technology continues to evolve, expect to see further innovations that optimize the balance between performance, fuel efficiency, and environmental responsibility in the vehicles of tomorrow. With ever-changing technology comes the need to learn how to correctly diagnose and service any major repairs required to the transmission. This is always an ongoing learning curve for those who specialise in this sector within the automotive industry. The advancing transmissions are fully electronically controlled and are incorporated with one unit that controls the engine and transmission. This unit has a powerful memory processor that communicates to the controlling units within the vehicle, so if one or the other controlling units locates a problem within the vehicle then it can affect the functioning of the transmission. This results in the transmission technician specialist needing to have full mechanical and electrical knowledge on how all the vehicle component’s function. The engine/ transmission control unit with its inputs and outputs, controls the transmission throughout all of its various ranges via a valve body which is attached inside the transmission. Attached on the valve body are a range of Pressure solenoids that control the oil pressure or line pressure within the transmission and the shift solenoids control
the various valves and their movements. The oil flow through the solenoids is constantly changing and varying. This, over time through the valves constantly moving backwards and forwards, can create a range of wear on the spools of the valves and also in the bores in which the valves move. This wear and tear can affect the rise and fall of the oil or line pressure of the transmission, causing damage to the transmission, but also can affect the controlling of the up and down shift points and patterns. Recent advances in valve body technology focus on optimizing fluid dynamics, enhancing shift precision, and improving overall operation of the transmission and its performance. These innovations often involve the use of advanced materials, sophisticated design techniques and precision manufacturing processes to achieve higher efficiency and durability. As a crucial link between the (electronic control unit) and the hydraulic system the evolution of the humble valve body has changed dramatically over the years and has become a significant contributor to the overall efficiency, responsiveness, and longevity of modern-day transmissions. Part of the transmission industry that has expanded in helping to control and overcome some of these problems, is a specialisation in valve body reconditioning. They have computerised equipment available to recondition and test a range of different model valve bodies efficiently and accurately. These companies, such as recent AATR Member, VALVE BODIES AUSTRALIA are one of the very few businesses that specialise in this area in Australia. Due to the complexity of the automatic transmission of today they work solely with automatic transmission specialist to overcome the issues that have been previously diagnosed by the specialist. VALVE BODIES AUSTRALIA have invested heavily in state-of-the-art diagnosis machinery and believe it will play a pivotal role in providing precise insights into a valve body’s functionality. These advanced diagnostic tools allow Valve Bodies Australia to access real-time data, identify specific issues and streamline the troubleshooting process. With in-depth analysis capabilities, this machinery provides “dyno-like” data to be able to fine tune and optimise a valve body performance and overall health and longevity.

What mechanical challenges do 4x4s endure when exploring some of Australia’s wildest terrain? We tag along for an Isuzu I-Venture expedition into the Victorian High Country

ost foreigners believe we Aussies spend half our lives avoiding a grisly death. If it’s not crocs snatching us from billabongs, great whites will swallow us whole while surfing the shallows. Survive that, and a snake or spider bite will do us in, while Outback road trips mean remote breakdowns and heat finishing us off in a few hours. What our overseas cousins don’t associate with Australia is mountains, snow and freezing cold. It doesn’t really work with the stereotype, does it? As a pineapple-munching Queenslander, I’m not a great fan of the chilly stuff myself. But what I do like are spectacular vistas and hardcore off-roading, which

It’s the only manufacturer-run 4WD training in Australia, and thousands have explored bucket list locations including K’Gari/Fraser Island, Tasmania and South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. I hopped on its winter trip to Victoria’s High Country, piloting a range-topping D-Max X-Terrain dual cab 4x4 ute. The spectacular location was one thing, but I was keen on seeing things from a mechanicallyminded position. How well do these modern, electric-everything 4x4s handle extreme off-roading? Are they up to the task? And what does Isuzu do to manage the risks and potential mechanical mishaps that could occur on such an odyssey? “Planning is the key element to make sure we don’t get into a situation where vehicles get damaged,” said Isuzu Australia PR Manager Mark Harman. “Pre-event, we use standard vehicles, both a D-Max and MU-X, over the same tracks we’ll take customers, so we’re full aware the type of terrain they’ll go through.”
26
AUSTRALIAN CAR MECHANIC | www.mechanics-mag.com.au
There’s expertise in spades, too. Harman himself is a highly skilled offroader, and will be one of the first to grab equipment, lying in mud or sand, to attend to any little drama. Then there are Isuzu’s off-road instructors and educators. They give expert briefings each day, help with vehicle preparation and give demonstrations on how to free a bogged 4x4. “The guides have done these expeditions for decades, so we rely on their expertise to make sure they educate the customers so they can push the limits of the vehicles by themselves,” Harman explained. “It’s about finding the limit of where you’re comfortable and learning from that.” It’s a noble cause. Too many 4x4 owners never scratch the surface of what their vehicle can do, missing out on epic adventures. And I soon found this out. In Victoria’s High Country the range of challenges were extraordinary. Using two-way radios we were carefully guided down a rock shelf smeared with slippery red mud, then into a river where the water almost submerged the wheels.
The thick of it Next, we were ploughing through squelching mud and brown water – the ultimate puddle hunting – after a
kindly instructor checked the depth for safety. All this while enjoying leather seats, warming climate control and our road trip playlist. Having utmost faith in our guides, I started believing it was all so wonderfully easy. The Isuzu 4x4s proved unflappable, and hasn’t off-roading become incredibly userfriendly? I remember off-roading my old carburettor Suzuki Sierra (many years ago now), and whenever the going got tough, I had to clamber out and manually lock the hubs. This was typically with rain pelting my back or my boots sinking into muddy quagmires. In the Isuzu, you just shift into neutral, turn a rotary dial and a tiny clunk’s heard as you find low range.
The Isuzus took a beating, but handled the rugged terrain well and made for a stress-free journey.
You can engage the rear diff lock just as simply: kids these days will never know how hard we used to have it.
Rolling vistas Highlight of our trip was the famed Blue Rag Range Trail – an epic climb into the mountains with open vistas for what looks like hundreds of kilometres. We dropped tyre pressures to 20psi – “tyre management is so important,” preached Harman – while one Isuzu work ute with no load in the tray went down to 15psi front and 12psi rear after wheel-spinning dramas. Not many would have done that without assurance from the guides, but it immediately gave the traction needed to climb a particularly steep incline. “Find me a better 360-degree view in

Australia,” a guide said as we stopped at the 1726m trig point, and it was hard to disagree. We’d conquered loose rocks, sky-staringly steep sections and respect-demanding drop-offs, but the champagne view rewards were otherworldly. Our Isuzu’s underbody bash protection took a bit of a pasting over giant rocks by the Howqua River, but the real test came as the weather took a turn for the Baltic – evil winds and dark skies – at the base of Mt Buller. We diverted up the dirt road to Mt Stirling, and visibility plunged the higher we climbed. At the summit, where we sought shelter from the extremes at Craig’s Hut, built for The Man From Snowy River movie, we agreed how fortunate we were to be able to reach such places in such nasty conditions.

All involved are first aid trained, and as they’ve preexplored the route, always know how far they are from mechanical or medical assistance if required. No wonder there’s a waiting list to get on one of these Isuzu I-Venture events: it’s close to risk-free adventuring in your own vehicle with so much expertise and advice on hand.
Tough as terrain The capability of these 4x4s is what made the difference. Over three days, not a puncture or bogging to report, just a couple of towball strikes. “I’ve only seen two punctures in all my years doing this,” said Harman. “Each vehicle comes with a full-size spare as standard, so we’re always covered. We’ve never had a major (mechanical) failure on one of these trips, but we’ll

It’s not a proper 4x4 adventure if you’re not wheels-deep in mud at some point.
All in the mechanical trade know how the Australian market has gone bonkers for dual cab 4x4s. The Toyota Hi-Lux and Ford Ranger have been our bestselling vehicles for years, and Isuzu is Australia’s ninth best-selling brand (ahead of Volkswagen) despite selling only two models. While many will never know exactly what their vehicles are capable of, thank goodness Isuzu is intent on its products getting wheels properly muddy, and in some of Australia’s most incredible locations. Just make sure, unlike me, you take a proper coat in winter.

f you don’t buy Japanese, you’re nuts,” said David Wilson as I quizzed him on which vehicle he’d recommend for serious bush bashing. Never a man to hold back an opinion, Wilson’s a rusted-on legend of the 4x4 scene, and can always be relied on for words of wisdom to go with plain old telling it like it is. “I owned a 2002 (Land Rover) TD5 Defender, and I loved that car,” he said. “But it was a love/hate relationship because you know they’re not the best to drive. The driver’s side door pillar’s in your right shoulder; the handbrake’s in your left shin and the steering wheel’s up against your chest. They’re so uncomfortable. But for the 4x4 experience, they can’t be beaten.”
Really? So a Land Rover’s the one to go for? Of course not. Hence the Japanese preference. “They all make them the same, you see,” he preached. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi or Isuzu, there’s something in the engineering. “They’re logical in their layout and pretty bulletproof. “They’re essentially uber reliable, and you can depend on them to get you there.”
Coast to Coast Such merits are key in Wilson’s line of work. For thirty years, David and wife Rose have run Adventure 4WD from their South Australian base. Tens of thousands of 4WD owners have been taught, instructed and

educated by its team. That includes government, mining and infrastructure providers, as well as upskilling Australia’s ever-growing number of recreational off-roaders. David fronted the TEN and Foxtel 4WD television program Beyond the Bitumen, has co-hosted Nine’s Motorvision and an ABC radio motoring program, has written for newspapers and glossy magazines on all things 4x4, and helped run the online Loaded 4x4 Magazine. You’ll struggle to find another Aussie so deeply entrenched in this specialist sector. He’s been surrounded by all things mechanical from a young age. Adelaide born, he was the son of a car salesman who sold

Austins and Wolseleys, but also some primo stuff too.” That meant the family driveway featured MGs, Rileys and Austin Healeys, and eventually Rolls-Royces and Bentleys.
Sterner stuff By the mid-1960s, David said he really discovered an interest in steering things, and in his teens would follow Dad into work on weekends and head out back into the workshop and watch and learn about general servicing and the dark art of tuning carbies. From the 70s, a feverish passion for all things Italian followed. You mechanics who’ve been around since those days will raise an eyebrow at that. Is this guy a glutton for punishment? Italian vehicles’ deserved reputation for guaranteed electrical gremlins and rusting in light rain couldn’t overcome Wilson going weak for the sound of triple Weber carbs. he’ll insist reliability must play second fiddle to soulful noise and sumptuous design. Wilson keeps a fine collection of classic Italian motorcycles to this day, these elegant road-goers a stark contrast to his day job transport of rugged off-roaders.
Tips of the trade In the mid-70s, family friends were the first park rangers installed on the Coorong in South Australia. On a visit, Wilson was handed keys to their government issue Toyota LandCruiser. “Running around the sand hills in it was when my 4x4 love started,” he said. This culminated in the formation of Adventure 4WD, and after decades in the game, it’s Wilson’s knowledge - combined with good humour and intelligence - that makes his teaching so effective. He’s been a key lead instructor in Isuzu’s hugely successful I-Venture off-roading initiative, which is benchmark 4x4 training for amateurs

and the experienced alike. His key messages revolve around preparation, responsibility and safety. Nail those and 4x4 owners can reach the Australian off-road locations we all drool over in magazines and Insta posts. His key advice? Before any big trip, make sure the vehicle’s in tip-top condition, carry plenty of fuel and water, recovery gear and a Satphone. Leave travel plans with a responsible friend. Always wear a seatbelt, always drive with headlights on, use high range 4WD on dirt roads and don’t exceed 80km/h on the loose stuff. “Tyre pressures are everything,” he said. “People are gobsmacked at how low you can go, and how you can save a (being stuck) situation before you have to pull out the winch, recovery boards or snatch strap. Being in the right gear’s key too. A lot of folks are reluctant to use low range, or even four-wheel-drive in the first place. It’s free. Why not use it? Same as a rear diff

lock if you have one.” Other nuggets, clearly learned through experience, are minimising bush travel at night to avoid animal strikes; stick to the existing track and trail network rather than damaging vegetation, and leave gates as you find them. On the vehicle front, he’s a big fan of 4WDs with ABS brakes, stability control and traction control. Oh, and always buy a 4x4 with a diesel engine: the torque, fuel efficiency and longevity are Wilson’s reasoning. And after decades in the wilds, it’s a hard one to argue. “There’ll come a time when EVs provide adequate range for a 4WD, but until then, diesels remain the best power source available.”
Bells and whistles For fun, if you want to get Wilson fired up, start a chat about the overkill of driver aids found in modern vehicles, 4x4s included. “I find the vehicles that are junk are usually the
ones with the really complex stuff,” he said. “All the driver assistance stuff, it’s saved my bacon on a couple of occasions, but there are so many beeps they drive me insane. “When things are overly complex, I think that’s a risk. “I like putting a metal key in an ignition. If you lose a smart key in the wild, that can be dangerous.” It’s why Wilson prefers the less fancy offerings. “If you’re going to go four-wheeldriving, some creature comforts are good, but I like a vinyl floor to easily sweep out. Carpet’s a pain in the arse to look after.” What about advice for those who own a 4x4 SUV or ute and want to get involved in more substantial off-roading than just a cruise up the beach? “If you’re in the marketplace for a fourwheel-drive and intending to go properly off road, the two things you need to sort in the first week are suspension and tyres, because they’re both junk (from the factory),” he said.
“In my world, what comes as standard aren’t adequate. “You can transform a vehicle with those two things, turning it from laughable to credible.”
Wishlist Okay, last question. If Wilson could take any vehicle off-road that he knew would take him there and back, what would he choose? “A Bushmaster,” he said without hesitation. This, of course, the Aussie-built armoured infantry mobility vehicle used in war zones. But in the real world? “A 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with the 2.2-litre diesel from Fiat; what a ripper vehicle,” he said. Once again, his Italian passion bias getting the better of him. What about being nuts if you don’t buy Japanese, I challenged? “Okay. A Suzuki Jimny. It’s so capable off road. You drive around its limitations, and because it’s got such a small footprint, it’ll go places the bigger stuff won’t.”

Ultimate power New NARVA Ultima Connect+ Controller offers complete control
T
he new Ultima Connect+ Controller has arrived, offering owners of the recently launched Ultima LED Light Bar range, the ability to further maximise the performance of their light bars, by adjusting the beam shape and intensity to suit the environment and driving conditions. An optional extra across the new Ultima LED Light Bar line-up, the controller offers further lighting adjustment with three preset and customisable driving modes. For highway driving, the beam can be set for maximum distance with less spread to avoid road sign flare. On 4WD tracks, distance can be reduced with a focus on
maximum spread, while for more open dirt roads, all the light can be set to its maximum output. Ultima Connect+ Controller also allows drivers to alter brightness (main and aux controls), provides a boost mode that delivers 15 per cent more power for 30 seconds, and with its LIN Bus technology, acts as a single point of control for all Ultima Connect+ enabled products. The controller’s generously sized buttons make it easy to use on bumpy tracks, while multiple mounting options and single wire installation provide easy fitment across a wide range of vehicles.
The Ultima Connect+ Controller is the perfect companion to the Ultima LED Light Bar range, which include 8 and 24 inch models that can be combined to also provide 40 and 48 inch bar configurations. With Ultima, owners can also select from both hybrid and flood beam light bar options depending on their preference. Together, Narva offers buyers customisation options like never before. Narva’s new Ultima Connect+ Controller, Ultima LED Light Bars and associated accessories are available nationwide from leading automotive, four-wheel drive and transportation outlets.

Lead NARVA launch powerful new Surefit GEN II LED globes in
A
powerful new range of LED headlamp globes is available from Narva, providing a major increase in light output particularly for vehicles fitted with older halogen globes. A key benefit of the new Surefit GEN II LED globes is that they feature the same dimensions as the halogen globes they’re designed to replace, ensuring easy and hassle-free installation in the workshop or for owners who prefer to DIY. The Surefit GEN II LED globes offer an impressive 5000 Lumens per pair of crisp white light (5700°K), which more closely resembles daylight, reducing eye fatigue especially for owners who spend long hours
driving at night or in low light conditions. Another impressive feature of the new range is its precise beam cut-off, this ensures sharp cut off on low beam applications, directing the light to the road where it’s most needed, reducing stray wasted light. And when high beam is engaged, the globes offer increased beam width and distance combined with an extremely even pattern. Lighting performance aside, a further area where the Surefit GEN II LED globes excel is in their longevity and reliability. The globes feature a reinforced housing with no filament and are equipped with low-draw LEDs which produce less heat. An in-built IP65 rated
fan also assists cooling*, and together this delivers an operational life that’s up to 25 times higher than halogen counterparts. Suitable for many car, motorcycle and truck models, the new globes are available in a range of fitments: H4, H7, H8/9/11 and HB3 for standard headlights and H7 for projector style headlights. Narva’s new Surefit GEN II LED globe range is backed by a three-year warranty and is EMC-approved, ensuring no radio interference when in use. The globes are available from leading automotive, fourwheel-drive and transportation outlets nationwide. *Excludes H7 Projector globes.

Projecta expands its range of innovative INTELLI-START Jump Starters
P
rojecta has grown its market-leading INTELLI-START (IS) range with the introduction of two new jump starters, the IS1400 and IS2000, both with patented Rapid Recharge Technology (RRT). RRT adds efficiency and convenience for users and owners. Once the vehicle has been started, the INTELL-START Jump Starter can fully replenish the energy that was discharged during the starting process in just 40 seconds. Simply keep the clamps connected to the running vehicle’s battery and the INTELLI-START jump starter is ready for the next emergency. This technology means INTELLI-START Jump Starters can be used time and time again before needing to be recharged, which makes the product ideal for applications such as roadside assistance or for vehicle holding depots and car yards. When recharging is finally needed, this can be done back at the workshop, garage or home using the supplied 5V USB charger. A further benefit of the latest models is their ability to jump start vehicles and machines that use a variety of battery 48
types including Lithium, Wet, AGM, Gel and Calcium.
A hard worker The IS1400 is suitable for 12V electrical systems and offers 500A clamp power and 1400 peak amps, more than enough to start petrol-powered vehicles up to 7.0L displacement and diesel engines as large as 5.0L. These capabilities - along with a compact design - makes the IS1400 an ideal choice to carry in the glovebox, for stowage with 4x4 recovery gear, or to keep on hand at workshops or car yards. The larger – but still compact – IS2000 model provides even further versatility, with its auto sensing clamp connections making it convenient for use on both 12V and 24V electrical systems. The IS2000 will jump start 12V petrol vehicles with engines up to 8.0L and up to 6.0L for diesels. It can also jump start 24V vehicles – both petrol and diesel – with engines up to 7.0L. This level of performance makes it suitable for passenger vehicles, small trucks, agricultural equipment
AUSTRALIAN CAR MECHANIC | www.mechanics-mag.com.au
and mid-sized earthmoving machines. Additionally, the IS2000’s integrated, ergonomic handle allows for easy portability, making it an ideal alternative to cumbersome lead-acid jump starters that are normally moved around on a trolley. Common to both units are premium spark-free clamps, ‘no solder’, high current connections for added longevity and performance, intuitive LCD display with real time updates, in-built LED work light, EVA storage case, USB charging port and the ability to be used as a powerbank. The IS2000 also features a ‘set and forget’ docking station for hassle-free benchtop charging.
Secure and protected The INTELL-START range is equipped with premium LiFePO4 batteries, the safest lithium technology available. Projecta’s jump starters also provide more starts with up to 2000 battery cycles – around four times more than competitor lithium cobalt-based jump starters. This range delivers a substantially
longer operating life and provides a smooth and reliable start, time after time. Added durability comes from the range’s rubbermoulded impact and drop resistant housing and IP-rated dust and water ingress protection. Along with their revolutionary battery technology, the IS1400 and IS2000 utilise an advanced all-in-one protection system that prevents surges, short circuits and overheating. For novice users a further benefit is the premium clamps won’t spark if attached incorrectly, won’t damage the vehicle or injure loved ones or employees. The display will also alert the user of an incorrect connection and advise when they’re ready to use, making these jump starters not only the safest on the market, but one of the easiest to use. Other Projecta INTELL-START models in the existing line-up include the IS920, IS1220 and IS1500.
For bigger jobs
The INTELL-START range is an ideal companion for car yards, roadside assist or vehicle holding depots.
clamp power for 12V systems and 850A for 24V electrical set-ups, along with 3000 peak amps – it’s enough to start petrol and diesel engines up to 12L displacement in 12V machines and all 24V engines. The larger IS5000 has even greater clamp power, an impressive 1500A in 12V electrical systems and 1000A for 24V systems – in both cases peak amps are 5000. This output is sufficient to breathe life into petrol and diesel engines up to 16L capacity in equipment with 12V systems, and unlimited capacity in the case of
vehicles with 24V electrics. The two jump starters also offer ‘no battery’ operation and can jump start vehicles without a starter battery. All INTELLI-START models are Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliant and Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) certified. The latest additions to the INTELLI-START range are available from leading automotive, camping, trade caravanning and four-wheel driving outlets nationwide.
For operators running large trucks and machinery, Projecta also has this equipment covered with its IS3000 and IS5000 variants. These units feature all the great benefits of their smaller IS Jump Starter counterparts but with the added power to crank heavy duty equipment. The IS3000 is suitable for both 12V and 24V electrical systems and provides 1000A

ave you seen the Netflix show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee? It’s as uncomplicated as the title suggests. Comedian (and car nut) Jerry Seinfeld hosts, he pilots a classic car and has a well-known funny person in the passenger seat. They drive, they chat, they grab a brew. It sounds banal but is addictively watchable. Why? It’s social and, for we car folk, utterly relatable. If you combine interesting vehicles, like-minded enthusiasts and a fresh cuppa it’s tapping into something many of us do each month: the local Cars and Coffee event. Unlike most car shows, there’s no entry fee. Nor is there a set time you must arrive and leave, nor any judging or boring speeches. There should be no “sponsored” sections, no cars roped off so you can’t get close, and no trade stands. If there’s any of the above, they’re doing it wrong. You should just park up, buy your morning coffee (and cake, doughnut, pastry, etc.) and wander around the gathered eclectic machinery. You’ll bump into old mates and make new ones, while the variety and quality of cars on show never ceases to amaze.

Meeting up with old mates and making new ones to chat car stuff is key to these gatherings.
Mechanics with a proper passion for cars are often found there. You may well have been up to your elbows in gearboxes and diffs most of the working week, but come the weekend, a Cars and Coffee is a decent palate cleanser to remind why you fell in love with cars in the first place. Admiring rumbling V8 muscle cars pulling up is a darn sight more enjoyable than diagnosing the latest electric gremlin on an over-complicated Euro. Plus, what a superb opportunity to become better known in the car enthusiast world. Trust me, if you’re chatting to a car person and they learn you’re a mechanic, the questions come thick and fast. From servicing to full restorations, there’s always work needed on these four-wheel pride and joys. A mechanic’s very attendance at a Cars and Coffee immediately endears them to the gathered enthusiasts: “Hey, he’s a car guy, just like

My local Cars and Coffee is hosted by the Sir Henry Royce Foundation and German Bakehouse Café in Coolum Beach, Queensland. The location’s near perfect. There are never any dramas, requests to move along or the council waving permit documents around. It’s just a social gathering without the red tape nonsense. “I come here each month because I’m a car guy at heart,” said Blair Aspinall, a local mechanic. “Some of my customers come here too, and it’s nice to speak with them outside the workshop environment. We can just be car nerds rather than going over a bill for work done. I’ve made many new contacts, and as I specialise in Japanese cars, make a point of chatting to owners of those. Almost all

He tried giving me some money but I refused. Sometimes you just want to help out.” Indeed. But no doubt the old bloke will take his Falcon to Blair’s workshop for future work. Despite summer storms playing havoc with the latest Coolum Cars and Coffee, some 80 cars attended. This was down on the usual 150 or so, but the quality was as high as ever, without being elitist. Capricorn’s State of the Nation report provides a glimpse into the industry
A
ustralia got a glimpse into its mechanic backbone earlier this year, after Capricorn its annual State of the Nation Special Report: The Skills Shortage report. Australia’s largest automotive cooperative; Capricorn found plenty of reasons to celebrate the industry, as well as find areas of improvement. Capricorn Group Chief Executive Officer David Fraser said while Members were confident in the future of their sector, finding skilled staff is an increasingly stressful burden on small businesses. “Capricorn estimates that there are 13,600 vacant skilled positions across Member workshops in Australia and New Zealand with these vacancies taking an average of up to eight months to fill.” he said. “Members have always taken on 60
apprentices to help with a pipeline of skilled labour, and whilst appetite to hire an apprentice is increasing, retaining them is a challenge.” Skills shortages and attracting younger people to be a mechanic were among the top challengers Members believed were facing the industry. That was also one of the top challenges Members found with running an automotive business, as well as maintaining a healthy work/life balance. “Overall, the stress about a lack of available skilled labour is up 12 percent on last year’s survey, a concerning trend which is having a real impact on a sector contributing over $58 billion to Australia’s economy.” “Finding good staff is the biggest challenge Members face in running their
AUSTRALIAN CAR MECHANIC | www.mechanics-mag.com.au
businesses, and it’s causing operational, financial, mental and emotional stress.”
Managing with the climate If there’s one thing that Capricorn’s report makes clear, it’s that the skills shortage is having a big impact on Capricorn Members and their businesses. “We’re a husband-and-wife team, so the pressure of the increased workload and the decreased capacity falls on our shoulders,’ reported one Capricorn Member. “We’re working more hours for a decreasing profit margin.” Another Member said “I’m working 70 hours a week to keep up with the workload. I’m spending less time with my family.” Respondents also reported encountering difficulties when trying to sponsor the immigration of a skilled
Mechanics have found bringing in skilled migrant workers to be immensely beneficial to their business.
There’ve been a number of challenges faced by mechanics in the last year, such as skills and materials shortages.
worker to fill a vacancy. “The process is too complicated and time-consuming,” said one Member. “The government portals were clunky and not user-friendly at all, and procuring a migration agent was very expensive.” Capricorn Group Chief Executive Officer David Fraser hopes that findings such as these will act as a catalyst for change. “We strongly encourage our industry partners to use this latest research to drive the change we need to see,” he said. “By helping this sector with red tape and cost reductions, the handbrake will come off this industry and the country will be better for it.”
What can mechanics do? The State of the Nation revealed two-thirds of participants hadn’t considered skilled migration, citing the costs and complexities
of the process. Employing skilled migrants might help immediate shortages, and being able to retain them long-term has yielded major benefits for workshop owners who’ve braved the process. More than half of Capricorn Members (58 per cent) have also found employing more apprentices has helped stem the high demand for mechanics. While it’s in no way a patchwork solution, it is another avenue for retaining long-term skilled mechanics for workshops and the wider industry. The State of the Nation report found 73 per cent of members had employed at least one apprentice in the last 12 months. A further 40 per cent of Members said they were extremely likely to bring on an apprentice in the future, a 30 per cent increase from last year. Overall, training the next generation of mechanics
was the top reason Members brough apprentices in, which is up seven per cent on last year. With plenty of Federal Government incentives available for mechanics and workshop owners that bring on apprentices, the State of the Nation also noted an increase in Members willing to take up those benefits.
Bring on 2024! State of the Nation Special Report: The Skills Shortage revealed plenty of challenges facing mechanics, but also a number of areas where the industry is seeking solutions. You can find out more about the report, as well as the benefits of joining Capricorn at www.capricorn.coop/

The Next Generation Leader Award promotes the younger generation of auto specialists rising in the ranks. The award recognises an individual who has impressed their colleagues and counterparts with their contribution and impact to their organisation, and excellence in service. These awards provide a platform to celebrate and acknowledge the diverse talents and achievements within the
collision repair industry, from seasoned professionals with a lifetime of contributions to the emerging leaders who are making a mark early in their careers. If you know someone deserving of recognition, it’s a great opportunity to nominate them and shine a spotlight on their accomplishments.
Benefits of support There’s still limited spaces for sponsors to join the Lifetime Achievement Awards. Tables of 10 are available, with sponsorship opportunities offering brand recognition throughout the event. EYE ON THE INDUSTRY
Training for the future MTA NSW is getting the next generation of technicians ready for a future in automotive
M
ake no mistake, the automotive industry is embarking on a significant period of change that will revolutionise all facets of the sector. This shift is happening not just in terms of how people use their vehicles, but how they’re made too. With so many new technologies to get our heads around, it’s no wonder the industry is struggling to keep up. One area that requires immediate attention is addressing the skills and knowledge gaps in our workshops. While no one can ever remain an auto expert for long with tech changing so rapidly, the next generation of mechanics and technicians may already be developing the skills they need to work on the cars of the future – 66

MTA NSW aims to offer a tailor-made approach to training to ensure each apprentice gets the education they need.
and they may not have even picked up a tool yet.
Skill up Nowadays, cars have more in common with Steve Jobs than Henry Ford: interpreting lines of computer code to diagnose faults, optimising engine parameters via the ECU and high-voltage battery safety are all part of a modern automotive apprenticeship. As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), the Motor Traders’ Association (MTA) of NSW has developed an industry-leading, one-on-one program focused on the individual needs of apprentices and their employers today, while preparing them for the demands of tomorrow. MTA NSW’s General Manager - RTO, Ian Price, says school-leavers have a bright future in front of them with an MTA-backed apprenticeship. “Now, more than ever, modern mechanics

and technicians need to wear many hats, and not just have an understanding of mechanical workings of a car, but the software behind it,” Ian said. “MTA NSW is developing training modules to ensure our industry is future-ready, while at the same time working with employers to minimise downtime for junior employees, and workshop-specific lessons to support on-site development. “There is a lot of interest in new vehicle
technology, and we’re seeing a great diversity in the people considering a trade in the automotive sector, which is fantastic.” With a new cohort of school-leavers about to embark on new careers, partnering with an RTO like MTA NSW can make a lot of sense to business owners, so why not keep your shop ahead of the curve by upskilling your team? Don’t forget, with change comes opportunity!
