WELCOME TO THE SEPTEMBER 2022 ISSUE OF CRANES AND LIFTING MAGAZINE. IN THIS ISSUE WE INTRODUCE A NEW FEATURE COVERING ELEVATED WORK PLATFORMS. ALMOST EVERYWHERE YOU SEE A mobile crane operating on a construction site, major i nfrastructure project or mine site, you will see an elevated work platform (EWP) deployed as a support vehicle. Indeed, mobile cranes and EWPs are grouped under the same Australian Standard. During the compilation and writing of the feature, we had a number of conversations with hirers, users, and suppliers of both mobile cranes and EWPs. It appears these groups all share the same concerns around safety but there doesn’t appear to be a coordinated approach. For example, we spoke to a frustrated hirer/operator of mobile cranes and EWPs who was of the opinion that although both will be operating on the same terrain with the same potential hazards, and both operating with outriggers applying similar ground pressure, onsite safety managers will walk past the EWP without much more than a glance to overly assess the setup of the mobile crane. These conversations have been interesting for the Cranes and Lifting team and we think there is a much larger conversation to be had. We will continue to bring into focus the important relationship between EWPs and the lifting sector. In this issue we congratulate Norwest Crane Hire on the recent delivery of the Liebherr LTM 16508.1 –the first into Western Australia and only the second delivered in the country. We also continue to examine the piling and foundation industry and how this sector is proving to be a major consumer of cranes, particularly telescopic and lattice boom crawlers. We also celebrate with a good mate of the magazine, Membrey’s Transport and Crane Hire, as it receives its 60th birthday present, ‘The Beast’ – a Liebherr LTR 1220, 220t capacity telescopic crawler. The Crane Industry Council of Australia (CICA) Lift of the Year Awards are sharply coming into focus. Please submit your lifts for the 20t and under 20t categories via the CICA website. The application processes are not arduous and the forms easy to complete. Or call the Cranes and Lifting team, which is sponsoring the Awards, and we can help. The team at Cranes and Lifting magazine view any feedback as being constructive, so please feel free to make contact. We hope you enjoy the read. Simon Gould Editor, Cranes and Lifting

A NEW WAY FORWARD: TADANO AND HEAVYGOODS JOIN FORCES
Direct cooperation between crane manufacturer Tadano and an online platform for swept path simulation benefits customers from day one.
www.cranesandlifting.com.au INDUSTRY NEWS 8 / CAL September 2022
It’s the moment the crane and heavy transport industry has been waiting for: Tadano has joined forces with HeavyGoods, the leading provider of software for swept path simulation, axle load calculation, and load securing. The cooperation makes Tadano the first crane manufacturer to have its entire range of all terrain cranes preloaded in the HeavyGoods crane catalogue.
“Our customers are often faced with the challenge of how best to navigate tight spaces to get their cranes onto the construction site,” said team leader of concept design at Tadano Martin Lottes.
The software also streamlines collaboration with government agencies thanks to its professional drivingmanoeuvre videos and ability to generate test reports complete with axle load information and documented load securing for heavy haulage operations.
The partnership makes eminent commercial sense for operators of Tadano cranes, who can now simply go online and simulate all tight spots along the route, from the crane’s starting location to the setup location on the construction site. This increases planning certainty and eliminates time-consuming detours and turning
“In these cases, HeavyGoods is a huge help when it comes to selecting the best route.” For these reasons, Tadano has decided to enter into a partnership with the Dresden-based software developer under which all data for its entire range of all terrain cranes is loaded into the HeavyGoods catalogue.
The online software offers major benefits for crane companies, as HeavyGoods managing director Susann Beyersdorfer explains: “With our HeavyGoods app, users can simulate crane driving maneuvers directly online on Google Maps or on their own drone aerial imagery, PDF site drawings, or official survey maps. “They can then view the simulations as swept paths in video format,” she said. And, because it’s an online service, the software is always up-to-date, zeromaintenance, and accessible from any location – users simply log in and startThesimulating.benefitsof the software are clear to Tadano, too.
“Nevermaneuvers.againwill our customers get their Tadano cranes stuck in tight spots en route,” said Lottes.
The benefit for users is that they don’t have to manually enter extensive crane datasets into the system. Instead, they can simply select preloaded datasets that have been verified by the crane manufacturer. And, if they are already HeavyGoods customers, they can access the Tadano data right away and use them for their swept path simulations at no additional cost.

NEW LIEBHERR LTM 1650-8.1 FIRST FOR NORWEST CRANE HIRE
Johnson had been operating cranes for various large crane companies in the north Norwest Crane Hire has successfully ventured into Liebherr crawlers. As a result of the outstanding performance of the first crawler, Norwest recently welcomed a second.
“One of our key pillars is our personalised approach. As a trusted partner, we adapt and are flexible to our clients’ requirements and we work with them to provide the best solutions. Our specialised knowledge is also a very important pillar to our business.”
NORWEST CRANE HIRE PROVIDES CRANES, transport and labour to major mining and resources companies in the Pilbara region.
Director Bernie Johnson, GM corporate services Toni Jessop and chief operating officer Adrian Wilkes provide the background to Norwest Crane Hire as well as their expectations for the new crane.
“Being local and supporting local businesses is another key pillar to Norwest Crane Hires’ business philosophy,” said Jessop. “At Norwest Group we are always striving for continuous improvement, we don’t want to be just a service provider, we want to be a trusted partner. Our people and our culture, are key to delivering positive returns to our clients as well as Norwest Group’s continued growth and success.”
WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?
Norwest Crane Hire recently took delivery of a Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1, the first delivered in Western Australia and only the second in the country. The crane will be ideal for work in the resources sector.
Good safety starts with good leadership. Across the Norwest Group, managers who can instil safe behaviours and values across their work group and community are actively recruited. The Norwest Group risk management system is based on industry best practice and designed to engage all of its employees.
“We have our four brand pillars, which define what we stand for and what makes us different as a business. These include service integration, a personalised approach, specialised knowledge and being local. In terms of service integration, we bring to the table the opportunity for a client to deal with logistics, cranage and shipping all from one provider.
“Toni and I started Norwest Crane Hire in 2008 with only one crane,” said“Today,Johnson.we have over 50 cranes and provide a full end-to-end crane, transport and logistics service. Our ambition is to be a trusted partner in the delivery of high quality, fully integrated crane and transport services to the Australian mining and resources sectors.

lift plan drawings. I said: ‘Yeah, absolutely, I’m in town.’ We hired a small plane in Exmouth and I flew up to Port Hedland, where I completed the CAD drawings.
“My contact then asked: ‘How am I going to pay you as you’re not set up in our system?’ I suggested that, because I’d prepared the CAD drawings for our Liebherr LTM 1100/2 crane, they could pay us by using our crane. And that was it. We were off and running.
“There was a lot of work in the north west and there was always someone trying to take the work off us. If we couldn’t do all of the work, the client would have given west before moving into the operational side of the industry. Jessop and Johnson met in 2004 and, by 2008, they were ready for a “Tonisea-change.andIdecided we wanted to give the crane industry a go for ourselves,” said“AnJohnson.opportunity presented itself and we bought a small business in Exmouth called Exmouth Crane and Truck Hire. The business was operating with old machinery, including a 1978 Hitachi 47-tonner and one of the first 12-tonne capacity“2008Frannas.wasthe peak of the industry cycle and everything, including equipment, was costing a lot of money. We invested over $1 million in a 2002-model Liebherr LTM 1100/2 with the idea that the crane would stay in Exmouth and go on a long-term dry hire contract, which would help pay for the crane. Then the Global Financial Crisis hit. “Basically, we couldn’t afford the crane. We were thinking ‘what are we going to do now?’ when, out of the blue, we got a call from an old client. My contact asked if I could do some CAD [computer aided design] lift plan drawings. Fortunately, in my previous roles, I had produced CAD

“Predominantly the crawlers are operating in the mines. Once the client gets a gauge and understanding on their capabilities, they love them. The cranes are being used to help manage setting up mining camps and the rebuilds of mining equipment.Themake-up of the Norwest crane fleet is designed to service the work required by our clients, said Wilkes.
“Our fleet is designed to manage heavy lift work because there isn’t much demand for long boom work. We have long-term contracts with many of the large miners and the majority of this work is in heavy lift applications,” he said.
“By the end of 2022 we’ll have 50 cranes in the fleet, including 26 Franna MAC 25s.
“Bernie really hit the nail on the head building good, solid relationships based on trust, integrity, respect and reliability are the key values for our business,” he said.
“We want to control the quality in everything we do,” explains Wilkes.
“We only run Liebherrs in the mobile all terrain crane fleet and the capacities range from 100t through 110s, 130s, 220s, 250s, 300s and 400s up to the new LTM 1650-8.1.“Wehave successfully ventured into Liebherr crawler cranes as well. As a result of the outstanding performance of the first crawler, we recently welcomed a second. We also operate two 100t capacity Liebherr rough terrains, which were the first in Western Australia.” He goes on to discuss the applications for the new telescopic crawlers.
Adrian Wilkes explains how the Norwest Crane Hire fleet looks today.
Johnson goes on to discuss the relationship with Liebherr and why he has never ventured away from the brand.
“We have 233 employees across the group. Toni mentioned the importance of the calibre of people in the organisation. We need to ensure the quality is there and our Norwest Personnel business only supports our Norwest divisions – it doesn’t provide external support.
“In the mid 90s I was operating the first Liebherrs to arrive in the state whilst other crane companies were purchasing other brands. With my experience, I knew we could run a Liebherr over a 400km road trip in the Pilbara and successfully work five or six jobs. I knew you couldn’t do that with other brands, it just wouldn’t happen.
“We control all elements of the supply chain to be that end-to-end logistics provider. We’re really focused on training and development, so it’s not just about
Wilkes elaborates more on the importance of relationships and why the personalised service provided from Norwest Group has been so successful.
Today, Norwest Crane Hire operates over 50 cranes and provides a full end-to-end crane transport and logistics service. some of the workload to other businesses. So, we bought another crane to service the work, and then another, and then another and so it went on.”

“We make sure we deliver what we promise – that’s really a key element at Norwest. Communication is also a key factor. With solid relationships in place, you can make that phone call if there’s an issue. The culture in the industry has slowly changed in the way people approach each other. It’s taken a long time for this to happen, but you’ve just got to communicate and talk. We push the importance of being a partner and not just a service provider to our clients.”
Norwest started its own transport company, NCH Logistics, because it couldn’t rely on other companies when it wanted to move counterweights for a crane. Norwest also started its own personnel business, Norwest Personnel, because it couldn’t rely on other companies to provide staff.
“Liebherr cranes are incredibly reliable. From the beginning, we’ve said we are only going to buy one brand and that’s Liebherr. In this sector everything comes back to relationships. Our relationships with Liebherr and other suppliers, and our relationships with our clients, are what is important to us,” he said.
It’s about them understanding the Norwest way, Norwest values and culture and our expectations that we have for theseWilkestrainees.goes on to discuss the Norwest standardisation strategy within the business.
September 2022 CAL / 13
“There are significant advantages with standardisation. You negate the need to stock different kinds of parts and you can get better value for bulk ordering parts. You have improved compliance with training and development because our staff are not learning three or four different crane computers, they’re learning the Liebherr Liccon system. Ultimately, the flexibility of our workforce strengthens and becomes more robust with standardisation,” he said. The Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 is going “We ordered the crane knowing its capabilities and it is going to be a game changer for the business and for our clients.”
“We believe Indigenous engagement is critically important and it has been very successful for us. We have adopted a multi-pronged approach. For us it’s about ensuring that spread and support isn’t just concentrated through one area, one family, or one group. “Because we work throughout the Pilbara we try to focus on all elements of the different Indigenous groups that also work across the different customer base that we have. We also work with a couple of local companies on identifying and training new personnel.
“A key element of our business model and philosophy at Norwest is standardisation. With standardisation you get efficiency. With trucks we only use Volvo and, with our all terrain, crawler and rough terrain cranes, we only use Liebherr, because Liebherr is the Rolls Royce and industry benchmark for cranes.

“It’s not just getting someone who has the right qualifications and telling them ‘right, you’ll go out and do this’.
In the Pilbara, Norwest Group is the largest local provider in the crane industry. For some time the business has been one of the most successful crane companies in terms of supporting Indigenous engagement. Jessop provides more information on the issue.
“In late April we ran a training course through a registered Indigenous provider and as a result we put 15 new riggers through an intermediate riggers course, which is a great achievement for these individuals. We then bring them into the Norwest family, conduct our own VOC [verification of competency] and, through a ‘buddy system’ that we’ve developed, we continue to train and develop these people and gradually integrate them into our business.

UP FRONT / NORWEST CRANE HIRE AND LIEBHERR to be a game changer for Norwest and its clients, said Johnson.
“Previously, our clients would utilise a large crawler to manage the lifts, which can take up to a week to build and commission, then do the job, and then another week to dismantle and demob. With the 650t crane we can drive in, build it, do the job and leave all within a week. Obviously, this brings significant savings for the clients,” he said.
“At the moment there are a few lifts
“We operate the youngest crane fleet in the Pilbara bar none and to have the youngest crane fleet, standardised to only Liebherr all terrain, rough terrain and crawler cranes, and lastly complimented by a comprehensive and standardised pick and carry Franna crane fleet – well that’s pretty special.”
Again, there will be significant savings for our client,” said Johnson. Jessop discusses the culture within Norwest and the support the management team receive from the people the company employs.
“We ordered the crane knowing its capabilities and it is going to be a game changer for the business and for our clients. For example, we have clients operate crushers on their sites and these require regular maintenance and sometimes replacing. Crushers weigh up to 120t and the LTM 1650-8.1 will be able to perform this lift at 14m.
LTM 1650 -8.1 will address this. With another job the LTM 1650-8.1 will be able to sit in one spot and manage lifts for four screen houses, whereas before we’d have to perform a lift and pack up, move the crane, perform the next lift, pack up, move the crane and so on. The LTM 16508.1 will sit in the one spot and do it all.
“This company would not be what it is today, or where it is today, if it were not for the wonderful people that we employ. So, as much as Bernie and I take the risk, we only do this on the strength and support of all of the great people who work with “Norwestus.is a business with personality
– you are never a number, you’re a person. And while we touched on not just finding good calibre people, most importantly for us it’s also about retaining good people. If you have the right people and the right culture, then you have the right ingredients for something special,” sheJohnsonsaid. adds: “People want to work for us. They will leave other companies to work for us and they’ll say it is because of the Liebherrs, because we’ve got new machines, we don’t take shortcuts, everything’s done properly.”
As an example, Norwest Crane Hire approached Ledge Finance with the need for a debt solution to fund its expanding fleet. Ledge Finance successfully navigated this process with the management of Norwest, to build their credit profile, which assisted the business to secure a spread of equipment finance providers in the broader market. This strategy has supported the growth of the Norwest business and at the same time assisted the client to manage their commercial and financial risk.

As a service, timely respondents for legal advice are important to all of us in the event something unforeseen occurs. But, as those of us who have lived through this before know, changes to workplace laws and the implications of these changes are external factors to us that we have very little control over. The best possible way to navigate through such change is to keep informed, and maintain good communication and relationships with your workers and clients to allow an opportunity to talk through any unforeseen circumstances which may arise. We are now only a matter of weeks away from the return of our annual conference, this year at the Adelaide Convention Centre from November 10–12. Come and join us to reconnect and get up-to-date on what we have missed out on in the three years since we last all met for our marquee annual event. I hope you’ll enjoy this issue, remember to stay safe.

ALTHOUGH IT MAY BE TEMPTING TO rely on a simple handshake for your next hire arrangement, this approach is high risk, and it is important to use a written contract instead. When there is no contract, or the contract in place fails to clearly set out the rights and obligations of the parties, each party is left with their own assumptions about what the agreement is or how the other will behave in a certain situation. Those assumptions can be incorrect (at least from one party’s view) and this can result in real dispute.
CONTRACT?
• t ime (hire period) • c ost (rates and how and when rates will be charged and paid)
A well-drafted written contract should eliminate the risk of these misunderstandings and operate to ensure that all parties to the agreement have the same expectations and a clear roadmap for how the supply or hire will work. In this regard, a well-drafted contract should address, at a minimum:
invoices, emails, letters, conversations, and text messages to prove what the terms of the contract really were, rather than simply relying on the terms stated in a written document. Anyone who has gone through this process will undoubtedly tell you it is not fun (even for the lawyers).

“The other driver for ordering so many cranes is the amount of new work we have secured. This includes a significant amount of work on the North-East Link in Melbourne. The work on the project will be for two-and-a-half to three years and it includes another massive diaphragm wall package involving big cages and heavy lifts,” he Avopilingsaid.decided to purchase the cranes for this project and other projects coming online in Sydney. The cranes include a Kobelco CKE 900, which has a 100t capacity with a maximum boom length of 61m, and two Kobelco CKE 1100, which feature a lifting capacity of 110t and a boom length of 70.1m. Then there is a Kobelco CKE 1350, which features a lifting capacity of 150t and a boom length of 76.2m and two Kobelco CKE 2500 featuring a lifting capacity of 250t and boom lengths of 91.4m.
“They are engineered to last. They are manufactured from the highest quality steel, so they are extremely rugged, and, in our experience, you only have to service them to the OEM requirements and occasionally replace a part. Their performance is outstanding, they are extremely reliable and bulletproof, and our operators love them,” he said.
“The CKE 900 was purchased for work in Western Australia and a second CKE 900 already in our fleet will probably head west as well,” said David.
“One of the CKE 2500 will be working on the major infrastructure projects in New South Wales. The second CKE 2500, along with the CKE 1350 and the two CKE 1100s, “Some time ago, we bought a Kobelco CKE800 into the fleet and we then added a CKE900. We really like the quality of the Kobelco brand.”

We maintain the fleet here and we also have fabrication capabilities for the piling aspect of ourDavidbusiness.”explains that Avopiling has had plenty of experience with the Kobelco brand, which is a major reason for the purchase of the new cranes. “Some time ago, we bought a Kobelco CKE800 into the fleet and we then added a CKE900. We really like the quality of the Kobelco brand. The cranes are based on traditional Japanese values of high-quality engineering and manufacturing qualities.
www.cranesandlifting.com.au projects compared to working with builders. Today, 80 per cent of Avopiling’ work would be major government-funded infrastructure projects, with the other 20 per cent spent working with the larger builders, which is outside of the civil infrastructure realm.
David explains the move to hydraulic crawlers has been ‘task specific’ because recent projects have included a lot of low headroom work. He also goes on to discuss the reason for the capacities of the new cranes and why there are so many arriving from“WeTRT.have been working on a number of large infrastructure projects, which include the construction of massive diaphragm walls. A few years ago, we were working on lift plans for diaphragm wall cages which were weighing 1.5t or 3t up to 5t. We are now working on more complex arrangements that include topping and tailing“Withoperations.recentprojects, the cages are getting longer and larger and weighing between 32t to 40t and we’re going to be working with 50t cages on future projects.
“So, the panels are getting deeper, and the cages are getting heavier. Also, our clients are asking us to stay under the 75 per cent of the lifting capacity of the crane and, if we don’t stay under this percentage, the lift studies will be increasingly scrutinised.“Thisisn’t a problem, but as a business we decided to have a few more safety factors in play and having extra capacity in the crane was one of the factors, especially when you are working with heavy lift projects. This explains the capacities of the cranes we have recently ordered,” he said.

“He understands the Kobelco product from a technical perspective, he understands what we will be doing with the cranes, and he is able to make the right recommendations in terms of the models and their capabilities.
“I used to manage all of the lift studies and I loved this aspect of the business. I don’t have the time now, but I do keep a keen eye on what is happening and being planned. The engineering in some of these projects makes the job so worthwhile.
“When you plan a complex dual crane heavy lift and watch it be executed exactly as you had planned and engineered the lift, it is a brilliant feeling. It makes the hours of work behind the scenes, which nobody sees, so worthwhile and I know it provides our team with a sense of a job well done,” he said.
TRT stocks a large range of genuine and OEM parts across most crane and equipment classes, makes, and models.
“I’ve known Troy for some time, and I am delighted to see him move from the service and maintenance of Kobelco’s, to the sales and management side of the business,” said David.

The crane OEM trained service and support team at TRT is recognised for its expertise in crane service and repairs, including major inspections and rebuilds, as well as crane maintenance programs. “I know TRT had not received an order for six Kobelco cranes in the one deal before, it doesn’t happen every day, but we were happy to provide security around the order. We understood it was going to mean a big commitment from TRT,” said David.

Sennebogen recently enlarged its telescopic crane range with the new 613E, which impresses with lifting capacities up to 15t. Its size and compact nature provide endless possibilities for assembly work and use on construction sites. The redesigned ‘Multicab’, isn’t the only new feature – thanks to the new crawler undercarriage, the compact dimensions assist with easy and economical transport.
THE NEW CRANES, THE 613E FEATURING a 15-tonne and the 643E featuring a 40t capacity are the first Sennebogens to feature in the Borger Crane Hire and Rigging Services fleet. General manager Shawn Borger explains how they will fit into the “Thisfleet.isthe first time we have included Sennebogen crawlers in the fleet,” he said. “We purchased the new 15t capacity 613E telescopic crawler and the 40t capacity 643E. We chose these models because two of our projects had specific requirements for these capacities.
The Sennebogen 613E is a compact 15t hydraulic telescopic crawler featuring a new cab and a particularly small transportation width.
The Sennebogens are currently on two of metro stations on the Sydney Metro project where they are assisting with the structural work and also helping the various trades working on the stations.
Borger Crane and Rigging Services has been operating the Sennebogens for approximately three months and Borger is very happy with the performance of the“Theycrawlers.are proving to be a great addition to the fleet,” he said. “They are a really high quality and reliable machine. They are well engineered and manufactured to cope with the rugged conditions they face and the nature of the work they do. Importantly, our operators love them. The comfort the cab provides the operator and the ease in which they operate the cranes is the talk of the Borger yard,” said Borger.
Tried and tested on other products in the range, the full-power boom makes the Sennebogen 643E supremely versatile on construction sites. The telescopic crawler undercarriage ensures the required level of manoeuvrability, even on difficult terrain, and compact transport dimensions.
The Sennebogen 643E is an important model in the E-series and it comes as a mobile version as well as a crawler. With a 40t load capacity and the tried-andtested full-power boom, the telescopic crane now comes with a redesigned cab and engines that comply with Tier 4 emissions standards. The machine comes with a 129kW diesel engine with 4f emission standards and up to two hydraulically-driven 35kN winches, with winching speeds up to 95m/min.
The Sydney Metro City and Southwest project cost range has been set at $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion in its final business case. The final project budget is to be confirmed once all major contracts are awarded. Formerly known as Sydney Metro Greater West, the Western Sydney Airport Line will see a new metro rail line run from St Marys on the existing T1 heavy rail line to the Western Sydney Aerotropolis near Bringelly, via Western Sydney Airport (WSA).
Equipped with the full power boom, which features a maximum boom length of 18.8m and the folding 5m fly boom, the Sennebogen 613E covers a convenient working range and remains compact and agile at the same time. With a transport width of only 2.53m, the machine can also be transported easily and cost-effectively via flat-bed trailer. As a particular advantage for the customer, the reduced width of the crawler undercarriage means that the machine no longer requires a transport permit. This means that a building contractor can move the machine from A to B on the spur of the moment without going through the complicated permit process.
The New South Wales government’s Sydney Metro program is the biggest public transport project in Australia. It is a fully-automated metro rail system, the first in Australia, and will increase Sydney’s rail capacity by up to 60 per cent by 2024.

This highly robust, maintenance-free system allows for continuous extending and retracting and is always friction-locked. The machine can be set to any desired boom length variably and quickly via joystick. This saves time and allows effective cranesSennebogenworking.telescopicarequickandagile at any length and are particularly suitable for varying boom lengths. Ray de Haan is a team leader at BridgePro engineering and explains how the new HSC SCX2800A-3 will be an asset to the Bridgewater project.

“The truth is, anything Japanese is excellent,” said Chadwick.
“We obviously have challenges getting it to site, as we do with all cranes, but it is surprisingly easy to move and efficient when being erected once we reach the sites. And, of course, once it is there, the tracks make light work of moving it around,” he said.

“The truth is, anything Japanese is excellent. In my experience, HSC crawler cranes are designed and manufactured with traditional engineering values in mind and the SCX2800A-3 is a standout machine.”
Crawler crane expert Phil Chadwick from Tutt Bryant is the business development manager for the southern region and delivered the new crane to BridgePro Engineering. “I can see the HSC SCX2800A-3 becoming very popular as a result of the extra lifting capacity. The 250t class has almost been superseded, with tenders now asking for 275t, 280t or 300t capacity cranes. I think the SCX2800A-3 has a significant advantage because of this. The resources and infrastructure booms are going to see bigger cranes and the capacities will be from 275t and up. Everything is getting bigger,” he said.

A reduced counterweight specification is a major asset on the new crane. By removing counterweights on the upper structure, this feature will allow the SCX2800A-3 to be utilised in four different capacity classes (275t, 260t, 250t and 240t). Coming into its own in situations where lower operating weight/ reduced ground bearing pressure are required, the reduced counterweight specification will further give owners the flexibility to use the SCX2800A-3 as a lower capacity crane, meaning fewer counterweights need to be transported to a job Anothersite.option that will greatly improve safety around the crane is the swing restriction system. Used to limit the range of slew to pre-set working zones, the system aims to allow smooth operations when working within tight constrained sites. There is an added slowdown function prior to reaching the nogo zone, thereby minimising load swing.
The crawler crane will provide impressive reach for BridgePro.

DYNAMIC LMI
The Integrated LMI System is provided as standard, offering high safety, efficiency, and calibration of the crane’s control. Based on lifting mechanics mode, the LMI computing system enables precision loading and the protection of loading operations. If an overload situation occurs an alarm system alerts the operator. The LMI system can automatically detect the suspended load weight, the working radius of the crane, and the angle of boom, and compare rated load weight with the actual load. Under normal operating conditions, the system makes intelligent decisions and will automatically cut off the crane’s actions if they are over extending the crane’s capabilities. It also features a black box function to record overload information.
The load indicator light has three colours: green, yellow and red, and the real time load status is presented on the display. When the load is less than 90 per cent of the rated load, the green light will be on. When the load is greater than 90 per cent and but less than 100 per cent, the yellow light will be on, the alarm light flashes, and the system emits intermittent sirens. If the load reaches 100 per cent of rated load, the red light will be on, the alarm light flashes and it sends out continuous sirens. When the load reaches 102 per cent the system will automatically cut off the crane’s dangerous operation.

The Merlo design team is focused on introducing state-of-the-art technologies for new machines of similar dimensions and weights to previous ranges, thus providing superior performance, greater ease of use and higher levels of safe operation,” he said.
The Roto initially burst on to the market in 1991, when Merlo introduced a revolving turret system capable of rotating 360°, with there being no need to reposition the machine.
Customers can simultaneously check all the operating parameters in real time and recognise when the safety system will intervene by slowing down and stopping any problematic movements.
“Versatility is the ‘name of the game’,” said“WithCassanti.atelehandler you can have up to seven machines in the one unit and, of course, you will save in capital expenditure as well as running costs.”
The Merlo Roto range has some of the most advanced safety systems on the market currently utilising both technology and the machine itself to ensure safe work practices.
The ASCS system allows the operator to set the speed of the hydraulic movements and to manage the geometric limits within which the boom can be operated in complete safety. There are even up to six different setups available.
The boom consists of a double ‘C’ profile in high-strength steel with welds made along the neutral bending axis. Hydraulic hoses and electrical wires are positioned inside the boom with a ‘cartridge’ system, to protect against any The boom has an impressive reach on the Roto range.
As a standard feature, the Roto range is developed for use as an aerial work platform. This solution increases the level of active safety during working at heights projects and continues to ensure the excellent versatility of the machine.

“This customer focus has enabled the business to grow to what you see today – a multi-brand dealership with a strong focus on customer support located in a purpose-built eight-acre facility at Smeaton Grange,” he said.
Although the team at STM Equipment have grown over the years to become a major force in the industry, they have not forgotten the traditional business values that have served the business well, explains Cassaniti.
“We don’t see our customers as a number, we see them as partners in the business. We have facilities in Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra, and Bathurst. This means we are capable of providing a wide services across a diverse range of industries,” he said.
“Anyone can sell equipment to the right buyer. The key to building a business involves providing the right levels of support to that customer and growing with their business,” he said.

In previous decades, products coming from China have been met with scepticism in Australia, with operators unsure of their quality and reliability. However, Rigby is confident in the product Sinoboom is delivering. research on the company,” Rigby said.
DIRECTOR JASON RIGBY HAS HAD A RANGE of roles in his life and each has given him the experience and understanding to get Sinoboom off the ground in Australia. “My background is ex-military. Once I left I stepped into a management role in the hydraulic and industrial hose and fitting industry. In 2016 I stepped into the EWP [elevated work platform] industry and then Sinoboom approached me in 2020 and said they wanted to start up in Australia.” Sinoboom provided a number of positives for Rigby, but he was not going to rush into a partnership with the Chinese family-owned and based company.“When Sinoboom approached me, I wanted to first look at the machinery before making any decisions. Having a technical background allowed me to look at the quality of the machines the same way our customers do, then I followed that up by doing a bit of EWP’s I was able to understand the finer details of what people needed and implement those into our machines,” Rigby said. “A few people took a chance on us last year and they have been impressed with the quality of the machines, as well as the aftersales service provided. Stock availability has been important for our success in growing the business. Our timeframes have been at almost preCovid levels, which I know a lot of big businesses are still struggling with.
“It was a tough year with all the lockdowns, but we used that time to really talk to our customers and understand what they needed. Even though I already had experience with Bringing new elevated work platforms into the Australian market is challenging at the best of times, not to mention having to enter in the middle of a pandemic. It must have seemed like the odds were stacked against them, but that did not stop Jason Rigby and the team at Sinoboom.
MAKING A BOOMING ENTRANCE TO THE LIFTING SECTOR
“Once I got in front of the scissors I saw a very high quality product and, for me, that was most important. I was not going to go round selling a product I did not believe in,” he said.
Bringing fresh products into Australia can pose a number of challenges, but the Covid-related lockdowns gave Rigby the opportunity to work closely with the hire and rental industry to grow the brand when other manufacturers where struggling.
Founded on February 28, 2008 and located in Changsha, China’s capital for construction and heavy machinery, Sinoboom specialises in the research, manufacture, sales and service of a wide range of access solutions.
“I think a part of the growth is due to the fact that we can support the product with our after sales service,” said Rigby.
“Having a dedicated sales manager [Owen McInnes] and a national operations manager [Mitch Ely], the Sinoboom team is growing at a rapid rate to keep up with demand and to continue to grow the business.”
Rigby has supreme confidence in the product he is delivering and he understands that the industry needs a quality network to meet servicing requirements.“Immediately we set up our parts and aftersales service. We bought in an industry heavy weight, Mitch Ely, to set up our Sinoboom operations effectively as an OEM and not just a dealership model, to truly deliver to our clients.
“We are slowly bringing in our hybrid and electric models,” said Rigby. “These will allow us to deliver a diverse range of products to suit the needs of customers, whilst also doing our part for carbon emissions reduction.”
Jason Rigby has grown the Sinoboom range in Australia.
Sinoboom has entered the market steadily, ensuring the business can fully support its customers as it scales.
“We partnered up with Access Services Australis [ASA], whom are a national service provider who attend onsite breakdowns as well as in-house servicing. We have been able to utilise their services to maintain all the fleets that are out there for varying customers and they have been integral to our success.“ASA is spread all across the country, so if a breakdown occurs, a team can be mobilised quickly to get on site and get machines up and running; minimising down time and increasing efficiencies.
“In the event ASA cannot figure out an issue, having a team of engineers at the ready in the factory ensures we are able to sort out any issues in a timelyWithmanner.”Sinoboom beginning to make its way onto Australian construction sites, Rigby has the opportunity to grow the team in Australia.
“The standout for us has been the 48foot knuckle boom. It is built tough, goes a little bit higher than the standard 46foot, has a 5° tilt angle, multi-function controls and it is very striking to look at, making it the perfect package.”
“Everything you look at is made in China. Whilst, in the past, the Chinese brands’ EWPs have not been great, they have come a long way and after now seeing the quality of our units coming into the country, that perception is slowing changing. Sinoboom is certainly ahead of the pack in quality and reliability,” he said. “It is amazing when you actually start to show the componentry in the machine and what goes into it. People begin to recognise the quality of the machine and its capabilities.”
“We have about 17 products in the market at the moment – four telescopic booms, four knuckle booms and nine scissor lifts. This is increasing almost monthly,” Rigby said. “The 19-foot [5.8m] electric scissor lift has been the entry-level machine into the market; it’s the perfect EWP to trial for both utilisation and market acceptance, so we have seen good numbers being added to large rental“Thefleets.standout for us has been the 48-foot [14.6m] knuckle boom. For example, if you’re an arborist needing the clearance to reach over a fence or other obstacle to access a work area, a knuckle boom will achieve this. Stick boom lifts on the other hand have no tail swing, which allows you to achieve maximum outreach at a lower vertical reach in most situations. This is ideal when you need a large outreach in an area with overhead obstacles above the machine, such as in the telecommunication sector, working around towers and lines.

The Nifty lift range with its hybrid or fully electric system makes them truly versatile allowing them to work both outdoors and indoors.

“To give our customers the clearest idea of how long an electric system will run, we do not work off estimates like a ‘days work’, instead we utilise the Standard Duty Cycle [SDC] system.

Leveraging artificial intelligence technology including computer vision and deep experience in construction and commercial environments, BuildAI supports project delivery teams to optimise the critical path. Integral to the critical path of any project is the safe and efficient operation of the crane, since it’s the timely movement of materials from the delivery zone to the work face that drives the progression of criticalCoordinatingactivities. material deliveries and lift plans is a daily occurrence and requires constant rescheduling to meet overall project program milestones. Often this is done manually and lacks transparency for all relevant participants such as sub-contractors, material suppliers, and project management. Today, Cobar Cranes is operating within a 400km radius of Cobar, supplying cranes for mining maintenance and construction projects, as well as supporting mining contractors, local government authorities, essential energy providers including APA, as well as Telstra, Solar and John Holland Rail.
“COBAR IS A TOWN IN CENTRAL western New South Wales, whose economy is based mainly upon base metals and gold mining. Around 2009, there was a downturn in hard rock mining that saw the previous crane hire business follow work into the coal industry. This left the town without a crane company, we saw the opportunity and grabbed it,” said Ewan.
Cobar Cranes recently took delivery of a new Tadano AC 160-5, which is the fourth Tadano to join the growing fleet. Business director Alister Ewan provides the background to the family business, and he explains the reasons for the addition and why he likes the Tadano brand.
•
•
“The Tadano all terrains have been good to us – they have proved to be extremely reliable with the right balance of technological advancements, including slew lockouts, counterweight combinations, and long-boom options.
In addition, it is the most compact crane of its class with a width of 2.75m and a total length of 14.5m. In combination with its 68m main boom, this makes it extremely versatile saysTheEwan.Tadano AC 160-5’s axle load contributes to this versatility as well, as the crane can travel on public roads within a 12t axle load limit even when carrying a payload of 650 kilograms.
He goes on to discuss how the work influences the make-up of the fleet and the approach the business takes to ensure the fleet is contemporary and fully“Withutilised.the work we do, we have tended to purchase cranes with long booms and, to ensure they as utilised as best as possible, we are prepared to run them at lower capacities if required. Every customer has different requirements and we have designed our fleet to meet these varying requirements,” he said.
•
Ewan and his team were particularly impressed by the innovative IC1 Plus control system, which determines the crane’s lifting capacity for every boom position as a function of the superstructure’s slewing angle so that the crane can always use the maximum capacity available to it.
• t
“This means that we can forego the use of expensive escort vehicles for a bunch of assignments and keep things cost-effective for our customers.

“Our older team members have backgrounds in the crane sector where they have been operating larger cranes. They are experienced operators keen to share their knowledge and expertise with the younger guys in the team, which we always encourage.
“Where do we see the business in five years? Much the same. We will continue with the upgrading of ageing machines to keep up with technology and safety. It will be interesting to see where electric versions are heading in the near future. The secret to our success? Like everyone in the industry, we put in the hours and work hard,” he said.
“One of the main reasons for choosing with the AC 160-5 was the capacity and boom length it offers without the need for a dolly.”
Ewan goes on to highlight the relationship Cobar Cranes has with the team at “WorkingTadano.withteam at Tadano is great. The transition from Demag to Tadano has been smooth, with previous staff being transitioned across to the new organisation and this has kept a lot of good relationships in place.
“We couldn’t have picked a crazier time to order the crane. We were right in the middle of the Covid pandemic, with all the delays relating to the overseas freight issues. But, we found Jay to be a man of his word and he delivered the crane on time,” said
“We have also found the technical support and spare parts availability to be excellent. We have chosen Tadano and Terex before them as our preferred OEM due to the many years of excellent service and support we have received in our remote location. We worked closely with Jay Gower, Tadano sales manager NSW/ACT, and he is very knowledgeable about his products. Jay has been great to deal with and made the purchase of the latest purchase of the AC 160-5 a very smooth transaction.
“We also encourage our staff to be more than just operators, riggers or dogman. We want them to think and work as allrounders, dispelling the stigma of crane drivers being lazy. Hence, most of our staff have trades backgrounds. Office staff include one fulltime office manager and one parttime administration officer. They are the glue for our business,” said Ewan.
TheEwan.safe planning of lifts is a primary focus for Cobar Cranes.
Cobar Cranes operates a crew of 10 operators and riggers/dogman with 80 per cent of the team being locals.
“We have a number of measures in place to ensure lifts are conducted safely. We prepare lift studies supported by Tadano Lift Planner. We also have job hazard assessment processes as well as safe work method statements. We also have what we call a Prelift Take 5, which encourage our crews to take the time to ensure is in place as it should be before commencing the lift. We also operate with critical lift permits. We also visit each site prior to conducting the lift studies,” he said.
Cobar is a town in central western New South Wales, whose economy is based mainly upon base metals and gold mining.
Thanks to this competitive advantage, our investment in this crane will pay for itself in no time,” Ewan said with absolute confidence.
“One of the main reasons for choosing with the AC 160-5 was the capacity and boom length it offers without the need for a dolly. It also provides excellent charts for our type of work, and it will reduce the need for dual lifts with our 100t and 60t cranes. “This will help reduce the complexities of the lift as well as freeing up the other cranes for more work. The arrival of the crane has been perfect timing and it will cover some gaps in the fleet, as we have a number of major inspections planned for some of the cranes,” he said.

• large rigging storage up to 300kg (front axle weight of 11,700kg) 11,700kg front axle weight and 12,000kg rear axle weight.
Many crane owners and operators raised questions around stability, which has been an issue over the years for many articulated style mobile cranes. The new Ranger R45 now provides the perfect opportunity to bring more safety into the crane operators operations.
New Ranger is the only articulated crane in Australia incorporating the new patented outrigger design. The outrigger concept is designed to provide much better stability with better safety. The new Ranger can deploy the outriggers quickly and easily to do most of the heavy static lifts. The outriggers can be deployed for both light and heavy lifts with the outriggers just millimetres off the ground constantly providing that safety whenTherequired.R45Ranger has a pick and carry capability of 32 to 35 tonnes, but as many crane operators say there are many times when the operator needs to pick up a much heavier load just outside of the pick and carry stability rating and in many cases the crane is usually fully articulated.
The Ranger 45 pick and carry has generated high levels of from crane owners.
force multiplier in this crane sector. Many construction and mining sites resist the use of normal articulated cranes due mostly to stability
Theseissues.newstabilisers and longer boom features have not been seen in articulated cranes in Australia before, despite it being a widely-accepted concept on larger slewingWithcranes.Ranger Crane incorporating the stabilisers and longer booms, this results in a more flexible crane with a wider range of applications than existing articulated cranes.
In these instances, the operator can simply drop out the outriggers to the ground, extend the boom to the load and lift it off the ground, and then, using the boom, slowly retract the load back towards the crane and back within its pick and carry radius. Once back in pick and carry radius the crane can complete the task safely.

CRANE OWNERS AUSTRALIA-WIDE WERE pleased to see this new, but very different, mobile crane that has advanced stability, long five-section full power booms, and more engine power, plus the fact that it is made in Australia. The design of the new Ranger 45 has always been safety-driven and, with the new outrigger concept, it has given many new owners new opportunities in construction and on mine sites Australia-wide. The new addition of outrigger stabilisers and the longer booms is a Ranger R45 can be offered with various engines around the 240kW (320hp). The main engine offered is the Cummins ILS9 235kW (320hp) combined with the popular six-speed Allison automatic transmission and a drive line to match.
The Ranger R45 boom radius range chart has a much larger reach and range radius than any other crane in its class and this in itself is a major force multiplier for most crane Featuresusers.include:
•
• heavier line pull winch of 7.5 tonnes with six falls • longer booms, five sections, all full powered and a 25m tip height • more power for better take off and maintaining better speeds on grade
• heavier static lifts with 45 tonnes at 2.5m radius on the hook • 35 tonne pick and carry outrigger stability system
The main thrust of the outrigger system is mostly safety driven but, of course, it increases its lift capacity enormously. The Ranger R45 with outriggers in place will increase the lift capacity by about 30 per cent, with an increased stability of nearly 200 per cent when using the outriggers. This means the crane is now stationary and can lift those heavy 40 to 45-tonne loads off trucks or smaller loads much further out at around 2m to 2.5m radius. Once the load is lifted it can be lowered to a safer handling height and moved back into a pick and carry radius. Then the outriggers are raised to allow the crane to move into pick and carry mode. The outriggers can also be lowered to just 10mm to 50mm off the ground, or to a clearance height off the ground, when manoeuvring heavy loads and this will provide added safety if the pick and carry load does move out of radius, at which time it will slowly rest on the outrigger, stopping the crane from overturning.
“The Ranger R45, with its larger engine, easily acerates to a comfortable 80 to 90km/h for on-highway running combined with the soft handling steering to match and plenty of braking power when required.”
The Ranger R45 is designed to pick and carry the load with the booms mostly retracted back to a safe radius, manoeuvre into position and then raise and extend the booms, aiming to position the load at 24m up within a structure. During this time, the outriggers can be deployed quickly, providing better stability and safety to the operator as well as a safer workspace on site whilst lifting the load in high, tight and confined areas. The outriggers can once again be fully deployed on the ground or held just off the ground,

The operator can then stop and readjust the load to a much safer radius and has avoided a dangerous rollover. Most articulated cranes rollover or tip over due to the load being too close to the safe pick and carry rating and doesn’t need much to over-balance. The Ranger R45, with its simple outrigger system, arrests the load to avoid overturning. Safety was the main design criteria, particularly safety with loads at a much longer and higher reach. The Ranger R45 has an exceptionally long reach of 25m tip height and has a maximum boom angle of 70 degrees, which allows it to work in and around refineries and construction sites, lifting those loads higher and longer than Ranger R45’s competitors. When working at these heights the stabilising effect of the outriggers come in to play again. Articulated cranes tend to slightly sway or roll when lifting any load this high on rubber tyres.
meaning that added stability is very close to hand if lifts go wrong. Although the Ranger R45 has been derated or limited to just 45 tonnes on outriggers it has almost doubled its stability, which is the focus of safety and stability. Other articulated cranes in the Australian market have a greater exposure to rollover, while the Ranger’s outrigger system is positioned almost 1m forward of the axle centre line, which provides enormous multiplier for stability and security when lifting heavy loads.
The Ranger R45, with its larger engine, easily acerates to a comfortable 80 to 90km/h for on-highway running, combined with the soft handling steering to match and plenty of braking power whenTherequired.newRanger R45, with extra stability, is unmatched – forming a new standard in articulated mobile cranes. With its 45-tonne lift capacity on the hook, fast set-up outrigger stabiliser system providing enormous increase in stability, long-reach 25m five-section full power boom, more engine power for better acceleration and hill climbing, soft ride suspension, a more spacious operators cabin, large storage for rigging, automatic rope compensation on all booms, and integrated spare tyre with an inbuilt tyre lifter, you won’t find these features all in one crane anywhere else.
The new Ranger is the only articulated crane in Australia incorporating SMC’s new patented outrigger design.
The outrigger concept is designed to provide much better stability with better safety.
The Ranger R45 comes with a 3-tonne removeable counterweight, which is easily fitted. The Ranger R45 can be offered with various engines around the 235kW to 240kW (320hp) combined with the popular six-speed Allison automatic transmission and a driveline to match.

“Apart from the structural design of the chassis and booms, the performance and reliability of a pick and carry depends on using quality componentry proven in plant such as loaders, where loads are lifted, articulated, and moved on rough surfaces,” Bearings and axle selection is important, as is the engine.
