Tsurumi Pump turns 40 in North America
This year celebrating 40 years of trading in North America, Japan-headquartered Tsurumi Pump (Tsurumi) is enjoying strong US mining sector demand for its premium dewatering pumps. Joe Ranieri, Tsurumi regional sales manager Midwest, said: “The mining market is thriving. For the past five to six years it’s been incredible. There’s also a lot of pump demand created by the big tunnelling projects going on around the country, in states including Indiana and Connecticut and cities such as St Louis. There’s a lot of water to pump out when you dig deep.
“We stock in the United States, so we have much shorter lead times. This really matters, especially in the mining and quarrying market when a customer’s pit is getting flooded and they need the pump now.”
Tsurumi’s line-up includes its best-selling HS and LB series portable pumps, as well as models equipped with agitators at the end of the motor shaft. Ideal for the construction industry, the agitators make the transmission of fluid and sand, sludge and slurry much easier and more efficient. www.tsurumipump.com
K-TEC AND ASHLAND JOIN FORCES
Equipment manufacturers
K-Tec Earthmovers and Ashland Industries announced their merger at the show, describing the move as a good fit. Both firms are now owned by private equity company Owner Resource Group (ORG), which took a majority shareholding in K-Tec back in 2018 and has been looking to grow the firm since then. The merger between the two earthmoving firms had been under discussion since August 2019 and closed in February.
“One of the ways to stimulate growth is through mergers and acquisitions,” explained K-Tec’s marketing vice president Shane Kroeker. “The company at the top of the list was Ashland Industries. Their products sit at the smaller end, so they fit really well with our product offering.”
The aim will be to use the two companies’ combined network of distributors to expand K-Tec and Ashland products into territories where they don’t currently have a strong presence. The new company will also be looking to grow overseas, says Kroeker, with Africa and Europe particular targets.
The merged operation will be headquartered in Rosenort, MB, Canada and led by Mikhail (Mike) Palitsky, president of K-Tec. The combined business will have manufacturing and service locations in both Rosenort, MB, Canada and Ashland, WI, US.

TRUST CREATES A COMPETITIVE EDGE FOR COMPANIES SAYS AUTODESK
Construction companies with the highest levels of trust perform significantly better on crucial business metrics than those that do not meet that standard, a new survey has found.
The study from construction software specialist Autodesk and management consultant FMI Corporation found that “very high” levels of trust within a company can equate to millions of dollars of additional extra profit –particularly valuable when margins in the sector are increasingly thin. However, only 37% of the 2,500 survey respondents classified their companies as having topranking levels of trust.
“We always knew that trust played a major role in the industry, but we didn’t know how much,” said Christine Acker of Autodesk’s product marketing department. “Trust isn’t unique to construction. It’s core to it, but it’s always been regarded as a ‘nice to have’.”
There are clear benefits to achieving that top level of internal trust –characterised by factors such as transparency, good internal communication and a company philosophy that emphasises seeking solutions over allocating blame when things go wrong.
Benefits include more repeat business, better employee retention and higher levels of operational success, the survey found.
Jay Bowman, managing director of research at FMI noted that 57% of firms in the ‘very high’ trust category achieved a benchmark 80%-plus in terms of repeat business across their portfolios, compared with only 42% for firms with ‘above average’ trust levels. The highest trust organisations working with repeat clients could expect gross margins 2% to 7% higher than similarly sized companies with only ‘above average’ levels of trust, the survey suggests. www.autodesk.com

Philippi-Hagenbuch to open production
facility in Brazil
Philippi-Hagenbuch (PHIL), a major global off-highway truck customisation company, has revealed that production of its patented Rear Eject Body will begin in Brazil in the second half of this year.
PHIL’s line of Rear Eject Bodies are said to offer the ideal solution for challenging hauling applications. These include general construction, road construction and sand/gravel to mine reclamation, and underground hauling situations where overhead barriers inhibit traditional dump bodies. The US-headquartered firm says the expansion of services in South America will better serve the construction and mining markets in that region.
Like all PHIL products, the Rear Eject Body is said by the firm to be engineered to provide productivityenhancing solutions for the toughest hauling challenges.
Manufactured exclusively out of Hardox 450 steel, the PHIL Rear Eject Body is, claims the company, the most robust ejector body available on the market globally. Additionally, with only one cylinder and no rollers, bearings or required greasing, the Rear Eject Body minimises maintenance while providing the reliability necessary for heavy-duty applications in extreme weather environments.
PHIL’s ejector bodies are currently operating throughout North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Australia. Josh Swank, vice president of sales and marketing for PHIL, said: “By adding production for our world-class Rear Eject Body in Brazil, we are able to offer the product closer to where our clients need it. This helps reduce import tariffs and freight, while providing localised parts availability.”

A WORLD LEADER IN ROAD EQUIPMENT
GIVE YOUR COMPANY’S TECH PIONEERS SPACE AND DIRECTION IF YOU WANT TO FLOURISH
Technology should not be introduced for its own sake and a company’s “tech pioneers” should be given the necessary time to bring projects to fruition, said Brad Boehler, formerly of Skyjack.
Speaking on “Gaining competitive advantage through construction technology,” Boehler told delegates that new technology, “…is most successful when it’s aimed at solving a problem, not just because it’s new and is used for the sake of innovation”.
Boehler, former president of access machine specialist Skyjack, said that innovation was essential, as the same old thinking produced the same old results.
However, it was important that certain criteria were observed for new technology to be effectively introduced. Staff had to be empowered and able to communicate easily with each other when new technology or processes were introduced, for example, he said.
And efficiency had to be driven into every aspect of the business, every day. In the construction sector, this could include connected equipment, which was increasingly appearing on the market with built-in intelligence and sensing abilities. Telematics, for instance, was not about telling a company where a machine was, but how effectively or efficiently it was working.

“Some basic knowledge might be there,” said Chad of Paveology. “There are just pieces missing, and putting it all together – the layout of the job, the setting of the equipment, how the operation all blends together – that’s where we come in.”
Contractors working on challenging jobs, such as airports or interstates, are Paveology’s main customers.
Manufacturers offer their own training, but sometimes they too struggle as experts leave the industry – leading them to turn to Paveology for help. Stressed-out contractors turn to

The Ray trials smart highway technology - live
Over the past three years, more than 10 new smart technologies have been installed on an 29km stretch of Interstate 85 in Georgia.
This is The Ray, private-philanthropicpartnership (P4) which aims to improve sustainability, safety and the environment for roads and transportation.
“Trying new things is hard, particularly on highways and interstates, because of the risks involved. My job is to mitigate those risks,” said Allie Kelly, executive director of The Ray, whose partners include the US’s Federal Highways Administration, the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, research
organisations and private sector companies. “Any of these technologies that perform and succeed here, we aim to scale to other parts of the country and other parts of the world.”
Technology under trial includes Connected Road Striping developed by 3M which uses amber and white glass elements to create road markings which are visible to
autonomous vehicles; solar roadways from Hannah Solar and Wattway; and dynamic tyre checking from WheelRight.
Panasonic is working with The Ray to build a digital platform for managing connected vehicle data. As well as analysing a host of connected vehicle data to prevent accidents and incidents, this will also be the key to pay-per-use road charging, says Kelly.
“This means we can have people contribute to transportation maintenance based on how much they use the road system,” said Kelly.
“Right now, our state DoTs [departments of transport] are reliant on gas tax. As we have more electric vehicles, funding from gas tax will fall.”

IMPROVED SOIL COMPACTION
Ammann says that its latest generation of ARS soil compactors is equipped with new solutions that improve production, meet the latest emissions standards and lower boosted due to technology that provides valuable data to minimise passes and boost
The new models are the ARS 70, ARS 110, ARS 130, ARS 150 and ARS 170 and these are available with ACEforce, Ammann’s
proprietary Intelligent Compaction system. ACEforce measures and evaluates material stiffness in absolute values and communicates compaction progress to the operator via an intuitive display. The system ensures compaction is achieved before the operator moves onto the next area of the jobsite. ACEforce also prevents unnecessary passes and over-compaction.
The rollers are compact due to the design without a rear axle, which positions the engine, coolers, liquid tanks and
hydraulic components in the manoeuvrability.
The ARS series also features a variable range of frequencies and centrifugal forces that deliver the required compaction and makes the machines productive in many applications, and on varied materials and thicknesses.
The new series of soil compactors meets the tightest emissions regulations, with Kubota and Duetz engines used in the different models. www.ammann.com
Caterpillar has developed the Cat Command for Compaction system, featuring new automation tools that enhance operator assistance and help contractors deliver high-quality working. Caterpillar is making the system available on certain machines in the firm’s soil compaction range, initially in North America but also in Europe shortly, with other markets following in due course. The package offers a semi-automatic compaction tool, using a touchscreen in the cab for control. When using the system, the operator first drives the machine around the working area to map the boundaries of the ground to be compacted and then enters the required compaction parameters using the touchscreen. The operator can then put the machine in the auto setting and the system will control the drive, steering and vibration parameters as the compactor moves around the preset working area. The system also saves information from jobs carried out previously, which can be accessed through the touchscreen. For safety, an integrated object detection system alerts the operator if an object is in the way. To optimise quality, the operator can switch the exciter system off when passing over ground that cannot be compacted using vibration, and then re-engage the automatic control system once the area has been passed.

Dressta’s TD-16N crawler dozer offers a new visibility benchmark
Dressta has designed its latest TD-16N crawler dozer to set a new benchmark for visibility, says the manufacturer.
Created by Edward Wagner, Dressta’s executive director of new technology, and his colleague Gary Major, executive director of industrial design, the innovative dozer has won a prestigious Red Dot award. According to Howard Dale, chairman of Dressta:
“Everything we do, we do to make our machines deliver more. The superior visibility of this machine will certainly help operators be more productive and do a better job in less time.”
Dressta also argues that the TD-16N is going to be a game changer when it comes to versatility, thanks to its novel undercarriage design, which utilises a single-track gauge for all
track shoe widths. This allows the dozer to be reconfigured at any point in its life, from a standard to an LGP (low ground pressure) undercarriage, by simply changing the track shoes and the blade.
This feature increases versatility and will help resale values, allowing future owners to reconfigure the machine with ease. The crawler dozer features a mid-
cab design over a mid-mounted automatic, dual-path hydrostatic drive train. It comes with a standard six-way angle blade and it is compatible with 2D and 3D grade control systems. Controls are easily accessible, intuitive, and easy to use via electro-hydraulic joysticks. The dozer has an operating weight of 19.09tonnes and uses a 127kW engine.

FAE’s versatile, revamped MTH 225
FAE has updated its heavyweight, multitask attachment with improvements to its mechanism for controlling drilling depth and its water injection system. The MTH 225 can be used in highway applications such as soil stabilisation, milling thin top layers of road surface or crushing an entire depth of asphalt to turn it into road base. “It can do stones, rocks, asphalt; it can mix. It can do a little bit of everything,” said FAE product manager Lee Smith.
It provides a useful tool for treating materials in situ, said contractor John DeLuca of A DeLuca Paving, who has trialled the machine. “In New Jersey, we have problems getting rid of old asphalt, it’s expensive to do, so we want to take materials that are already
in situ and improve them, using cement as binders.”
With a drilling depth that ranges between 340mm and 500mm, the MTH 225 has counter blades which the operator can adjust in order to control the size of the material being crushed. “With this machine we can shred the asphalt and improve the gradation,” said Deluca.
The improved automatic water system is important for applications such as soil stabilisation where lime cement and water are mixed with the ground to improve its strength. “When you are doing soil cement, you need to be precise with the dosage of water in order to meet the specification,” according to DeLuca. www.faeusa.com
WIRTGEN’S W 380 CRI GOES ON SHOW
Wirtgen is offering a highly productive road recycling machine in the shape of its new W 380 Cri model. According to Mark Stahl, director recycling products for Wirtgen America: “It’s designed for recycling.”
The machine offers improved performance over earlier designs, with a new delivery system for the drum
The machine drives the tanker truck in front using a pushbar.
The machine also features an MCS system that allows the user to change the cutter drum quickly. Although it can recycle a 3.8m-wide strip as standard, changing the drum allows the machine to recycle widths of 2.5m or 3.2m.
The machine uses an upcutting motion. The redesigned cutter drum means that the machine can recycle a road to a depth of 330mm, allowing it to reach the road base material
cracking that may have spread through the asphalt layer. It can also be used for milling by running it in the opposite direction, providing the necessary up-cutting action. He continued, “We’re starting to see more demand for road recycling.” For the recycling train, the recycler would typically be followed by an asphalt paver and two double drum rollers, with a pneumatic www.wirtgen.com
Improved concrete slipforming
Power Curbers is improving the performance of its well-proven 5700 slipformer with the addition of new capabilities. The new 5700-D model replaces
extra functions that help to boost its versatility in slipforming duties.
As with the earlier 5700 variants, the new 5700-D model can be used in a wide range of kerbing, walkway, highway barrier, ditching, paving and tunnelling applications.
The machine retains its compact size, simple design, easy operation and high productivity of the earlier variants.
However, a key improvement is the ability for the machine’s SlipSmart Control system to interface with 3D stringless control packages from all three major suppliers: Leica Geosystems, Topcon Positioning and Trimble.
Improvements have been made to the controls such as a new switch that will raise or lower the crawler posts simultaneously, as well as a new vibrator master control that allows the operator to increase or decrease vibration across the vibrators. They also include an improved cross-slope control, auto-calibration for the radius steer sensor and fine scaling of speed pots.
The operator can keep track of engine performance more easily with the installation of a new engine display that replaces the series of gauges on the earlier model. Operator comfort has been improved due to a new cold air dam between the engine and console to ensure better cooling. www.powercurbers.com
COMPACTION VERSATILITY
Ammann claims that its latest ARX 16, ARX 26-2 and ARX 45-2 T4 Final compact tandem rollers are highly versatile. The machines benefit from drums that can quickly be adjusted from in-line to off-set configurations, for working near obstructions. The ARX 16 is left and right side support-free.
Compactors that are off-set are able to work close to kerbs and other obstructions. Operators need watch only one drum, knowing the second will be a safe distance from the obstruction. The in-line setting, which enables equal distribution of compaction forces, is preferred on more open jobsites.
The adjustment between in-line and off-set configurations is done manually and is said to be easy for operators to make. The articulating joint, which makes the in-line/ off-set adjustment possible, is also said to be maintenance-free.
The rollers are powered by Kubota engines that meet Tier 4 Final and Stage V emissions standards. The machines also feature a number of design upgrades, including a redesign of the front and rear for improved comfort and visibility. Weights range from 1.4-4.5tonnes.
Available on the machines is ACEforce, Ammann’s proprietary Intelligent Compaction system. ACEforce measures and evaluates material stiffness in absolute values and provides this information to the operator on a display. The system ensures compaction is achieved before moving onto the next area of the jobsite. ACEforce also prevents unnecessary passes and overcompaction.

Improved paving technology
Dynapac is offering an improved material transfer vehicle, as well as a new high production screed system.
The firm’s proven MF2500 feeder now benefits from the sophisticated IMIX technology. This system is claimed to eliminate both material segregation and heat segregation in the mix. The MF2500CS is also now available with the newly developed 1m SW6500 swing app conveyor for long side reach while paving over barriers and inline or echelon paving applications.
In addition, the MF2500CS feeder offers high productivity of up to 4,000tonnes/hour and versatility as it can be used for multiple materials. It also offers low total cost of operation, with around 60-70% fewer wear
Cost and speed of placement are two of the factors behind the increasing popularity of roller compacted concrete (RCC), conference attendees at CONEXPOCON/AGG 2020 were told. However, despite the material’s benefits, users have to work carefully to maximise the material’s benefits, said Wayne Adaska, director, pavements and geotechnical markets, Portland Cement Association.
Speed of laying is one factor behind the material’s renaissance:
“When putting down asphalt you’re putting down one to one-and-ahalf-inch layers, but with RCC you can use eight to nine-inch layers. And you can get traffic on it within 24 hours … in most cases,” Adaska said.
However, he added, it’s equally important to take into consideration factors such as client expectations, aggregate selection and good compaction. In terms of client expectations, RCC’s pale colouration meant that any imperfections showed up more readily than those in dark asphalt … so it is important that customers are made aware in advance of how it will appear. Mixing in smaller aggregate with a maximum size of a half-inch (c.12mm) - compared to traditional three-quarter inch (c.18mm) aggregate – can help by giving a tighter surface.
The SD2500CS paver can also be equipped with Dynapac’s newly developed V5100THE tamper, high compaction electric screed. With extensions, this allows paving widths of up to 8.1m.
parts and a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 70% claimed in comparison with conventional MTVs.
The firm is also now offering the latest SD2500CS paver for
the North American market. This high-production machine can be used for applications requiring a high-quality finish such as airport runways, racetracks and new highways.
The new screed technology allows for different pressures and vibration parameters to achieve high pre-compaction while paving thicker pavements and smoother finish on top layers. The pressure bar system allows up to 70bar to be applied uniformly across the whole width of pavement. The firm says that although vibration type screeds are preferred in North America, there are special applications, such as airport runway or racetrack surfacing, that would suit the use of this type of screed.

OSCILLATORY COMPACTOR
Anew asphalt compactor featuring oscillation is being added to the Dynapac product range. The new CO5200 VI is a doubledrum asphalt roller with oscillation that is said to provide 100% ground contact and limit the risk of damage to nearby structures from heavy vibration. The CO5200 VI is equipped with a 1950mm oscillation drum made of Hardox 450 steel that is highly wear-resistant and carries a seven-year, 7500-hour drum shell warranty. The machine shares many technical features with Dynapac’s CO4200 VI model.
Like existing asphalt compactors with oscillation, the new CO5200 VI model can be used for applications such as bridge decks, foundations and
around concrete structures, as well as on thin asphalt layers. This is because the compaction forces from an oscillatory roller are localised and do not travel, unlike the forces generated by a conventional vibratory machine. Oscillatory compactors can be used close to buildings housing sensitive equipment or historic
Effective asphalt compaction
Hamm is widening its product range with the introduction of new high-performance rubber tyred machine for the asphalt compaction market. High finish quality is claimed for the new HP 180i pneumatic tyred roller. The rubber tyred machine is said to be more versatile and productive than earlier machines from the firm in this class. The cab design, all-round visibility and ergonomics have also been improved to make it easier to operate for a full shift.

structures without risk of causing disturbance or damage as a result.
Extra versatility is claimed for the CO4200 VI model, which can be used for a wide range of duties due to its having an oscillation drum as well as a conventional vibration type drum.
According to Dynapac, the drive belts on its oscillation type machines are easy to access. This allows service work to be carried out onsite in less than two hours as opposed to transporting the machine to a shop for multiple days of maintenance.

Brokk unveils Atomized Water Mist system
Swedish remote-controlled demolition robot specialist Brokk has introduced a new water mist system designed to produce droplets fine enough to trap silica dust particles.
While misting systems to suppress dust have been around for years, Brokk says that it believes the new Atomized Water Mist system is the only one to be US Occupational Health and Safety Administration-compliant for dealing with silica dust.
“Silica dust remained a concern because it is difficult to contain,” said Martin Krupicka, president and CEO of the Brokk Group.
The problem stems from the size of the water droplets in existing misters, which are much larger than the silica dust they are meant to trap, says Brokk. Silica particles range from 0.1 to 1,000 microns while traditional methods produce water droplets that are 200 to 1,000 microns in size. The size and velocity of these larger droplets cause air and silica particles to flow around them in a phenomenon known as the slipstream effect. The silica can then still be breathed in by workers.

Sullair’s valve technology delivers variable pressure and flow
Hyundai has unveiled the first of its prototype electric mini excavators, the R18E. This 1.8tonne class, all-electric machine should be ready for the market by 2022. Drive comes from induction motors powering the conventional hydraulics, with power from a high-output, lithium battery. Quiet in operation, the machine offers zero emissions, suiting it to use in underground car parks or tunnelling jobs, for example. At this stage, development is ongoing so the working time of the final production machine on a full charge has yet to be determined. This will be the first in a wider range of electric machines from the company.
www.hceamericas.com
Air compressor specialist Sullair has launched a new compressor, which uses spiral valve technology to deliver variable pressure and flow, the first-ever portable compressor to do so.
The 800HH-900H can deliver anywhere from 212litres to 425litres per second at 10 to 14 bar psi. “If you don’t need the pressure and flow, it will calibrate and you don’t use as much fuel,” explains Rus Warner, vice president of rental and infrastructure sales and service for the Americas at Sullair, a Hitachi Group company.
For contractors this means lower fuel costs and a more environmentally responsible approach. For rental companies, the wide range of flows and pressures means that the machine is versatile, making it suitable for many applications and hence more often rented out, delivering a good return on investment.

John Deere tracked loader’s new solutions
The construction industry is being hit hard with serious problems including a shortage of machine operators and the need to maximise both finish quality and working productivity.
But John Deere is offering advanced solutions on even its compact machines, such as the new 333G tracked loader that help address these issues. CEO John May said, “We believe technology is the key to help our customers solve their most pressing problems.”
Machine control technologies and telematics tools are delivering performance gains for the construction sector and John Deere says that the sophisticated SmartGrade system significantly boosts productivity for its latest compact tracked loader, the 333G.
The firm says that its SmartGrade 333G Compact Track Loader can increase productivity as it can carry out grading tasks more quickly and with fewer passes, as well as less reworking compared with machines not equipped with grade technology. As the control package is integrated into the machine, there are no vulnerable masts and cables, so the system is more rugged and less at risk from site damage.
Another technology package for the 333G is the new DozerMode system, which allows the joystick controls to provide crawler dozer operation. The system works best with the John Deere six-way dozer blade attachment for cutting a grade and spreading materials. This blade does not require tools to change between other attachments and enables accurate cutting or finishing light materials in tight spaces. www.johndeere.com
SULLAIR LAUNCHES NEXT-GENERATION COMPRESSOR
Sullair has launched its next-generation 1600H Tier 4 Final portable air compressor with changes aimed to make it easier to maintain and more environmentally friendly.
To make access to the inside of the machine easier, Sullair has removed a central post between two service doors, as well as adding push-toclose latches. Aftercooled and condensate evaporation system
which reuses heat from the compressor’s exhaust. Previous versions required operators to empty condensate, which contains traces of oil, risking contamination in the event that liquid was not responsibly disposed of.
The new 1600H compressor is available in three Tier 4 Final emissions-compliant, diesel engines: Caterpillar C15, Perkins 2506J and Cummins QSX15. All three options deliver 755litres per second at
7 to 10 bar through a Sullair 25-Series air end.
Sullair offers a choice of engines so that customers who are committed to one engine supplier can stick with that supplier. “We cannot talk a company into buying brand X if they have millions of dollars invested in brand Y,” said Rus Warner, vice president of rental and infrastructure sales and service for the Americas at Sullair.

Electrifying – the Case 580 EV
CASE has unveiled its new fully electric 580 EV backhoe loader and has delivered the first two production models to the US east coast.
The 580 EV is also part of the company’s alternative propulsion strategy, according to Hubertus Mulhauser, chief executive of CNH Industrial, parent of CASE Construction Equipment. “The world of diesel will come to an end in 10, 15 or 20 years,” he said. “Diesel will be replaced by different forms of propulsion.”
But there will be no one single alternative mode of propulsion, Mulhauser predicted. As well as electrical propulsion, the adoption of liquified natural gas and compressed gas-powered plant, already being increasingly adopted in the logistics sector, would continue to grow in future, he said.
To that end, last September CASE became a “prime investor” in Nikola, a manufacturer of zero-emission, heavy-duty trucks, which is working on fuel cell technology.
The 580 EV is powered by a 480V, 90kw/hr lithiumion battery pack that can be charged by any 220V/ three-phase connection. Each charge will support most common eight-hour workdays, claims CASE.
The battery separately powers the drivetrain and hydraulic motors, resulting in hydraulic breakout forces equal to diesel-powered machines and improved performance during simultaneous loader and drivetrain operation.

Soilmec has introduced two piling rigs to the North American market, the 35ton (32tonne) SR35 EVO and the 15ton (14tonne) SM-15HD. Though very different in size and application, both are high-powered machines.
The SR-35 EVO has more power and flexibility than the SR-30 EVO, says Soilmec, and is powered by the latest generation Stage V/Tier 4 Final diesel engine, an American Cummins B6.7. This engine delivers 11kW more power than the SR-30 EVO and has low-idle capability which delivers fuel efficiency and reduced noise pollution. The SR-35 EVO’s hydraulic and electric systems have been simplified to minimise energy losses and provide more space for maintenance. www.soilmec.com
with its unique engineered anchoring design, closes this gap.
Doka, says that its Falpro system is designed especially for overhead anchorage of ANSI-approved PPE fall arresters.
Falpro has a maximum cable length of nearly 9m and enables contractors to work safely at the drop-off edge without trip hazards because the anchor
point is always above head height. In its default position, the anchor point is almost 2.5m above the installation surface.
Importantly, the 475kg Falpro system needs no anchoring to the structure upon which it sits. It is totally portable, has no counterweights, requires no installation work or anchoring, and has no effects on the structure.

Liebherr introduces Leica Geosystems 2D and 3D machine control systems
Liebherr’s wheeled and crawler excavators will feature advanced 2D and 3D machine controls systems in the future, thanks to a new partnership with Leica Geosystems.
The technology will be available as factory-mounted equipment on the Liebherr machines and includes “real-time data for precise, fast and effective processing of construction projects,” says Peter Mayr, managing director of Liebherr USA.
Efficient payload data
The latest solution from Trimble’s Loadrite business offers increased efficiency for materials haulage operations on quarry sites.
The Smart Haul solution means that electronic payload ‘tickets’ generated by loading machines such as wheeled loaders or excavators are automatically shared to the trucks as the material is hauled away. The site manager can see in real time where each truck is carrying every load and whether it is going to the crusher or a dump pile, for example.
Drilling down into the data can reveal truck productivity and the system will also provide machine health data on each item of equipment. Should a machine need attention this can be identified early, or if additional operator training is required, to address any particular issues over how equipment can be used more efficiently. www.trimble.com
The machine control systems will be available on generation 6 and 8 wheeled and crawler excavators, and they can be retrofitted on a range of other Liebherr machines.

Topcon excavator technology for Hitachi
“With Solution Linkage Integrated Grade Control with Topcon, our customers will combine the smooth hydraulics and fast cycle times of Hitachi excavators with advanced grade technology in one package,” said Jonny Spendlove, product marketing manager, excavators, Hitachi Construction Machinery – Americas. “This technology is all about saving time and making good operators great.”
The new grade control option will be offered on additional Hitachi Dash-6 construction excavators in the future.
The Topcon Linkage Integrated Grade Control is a new excavator technology developed in cooperation with Hitachi that allows an operator to set a grade and hold it.
This innovative new integrated technology – which will be available in the US and Canada – increases efficiency while also lowering daily operating costs.
The grade control solution works with the machine controlling the boom and bucket as the operator handles the arm. Hitachi says this is especially useful as it reduces the need for multiple passes to achieve the correct grade. The company says that, in addition, less experienced operators are able to achieve the correct grade more efficiently, while crew members who previously had to check for the grade can now be assigned elsewhere on the worksite.

whether the mix falls within a predefined temperature range, and if any segregation is limited within specifications. The system also provides accurate compliance reporting, providing real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning accuracy.
This is important, as the temperature of the cold spots may be too low to allow proper compaction and would be first to fail if left unattended. However, identifying these even as the mat is paved means they can be removed and replaced while the paving crew is onsite, a significant cost saving compared with having to bring back equipment and personnel and closing the road section later on.

Autonomous compaction package
An innovative autonomous compaction package has been jointly released by Dynapac and Trimble. This new soil compaction package combines Dynapac’s SEISMIC compaction system with Trimble’s guidance technology.
Dynapac’s SEISMIC system monitors ground conditions and adjusts vibration frequency accordingly, optimising both compaction and fuel efficiency. The Dynapac machines also benefit from an active bouncing control system that shuts off drum vibration when the ground reaches specification density.
Meanwhile, the Trimble technology provides automatic steering and speed control for the roller. The operator/site manager uses the machine to map the boundaries of the area to be compacted. Then, once the machine is placed in autonomous mode, the system takes over control of steering and speed. The two firms say that automating these functions helps to address operator skill gaps, while consistent speed and steering improve compaction quality.

SOPHISTICATED MACHINE SOLUTIONS
New machine control solutions for earthmoving are now being introduced by Topcon Positioning. One advanced tool offers tiltrotator functionality, which allows operators using excavators with automatic control functions to swivel or tilt the bucket, while providing automatic boom control
“If excavator operators are in situations such as at the top of the slope, grading a long incline and not totally perpendicularly lined up, positioning the cutting edge of the bucket to the surface is now more easily attainable with the tiltrotator functionality,” said Murray Lodge, senior VP of construction.
Compact machine control solution
Topcon Positioning is now offering machine control solutions for compact equipment. Murray Lodge, senior vice president for the firm, said, “We’re targeting the smaller equipment - mini excavators, skid steer loaders, backhoe loaders. With this new system, it’s a simple indicate tool.”
This can use an Android device such as a phone or tablet as a display. Pocket MC also allows for a local positioning system (LPS) option using an LN-150 Layout Navigator total station.
This solution incorporates the same hardware for Topcon 3D machine control with an indicate-only option running on Android devices with a free app — Pocket-MC, which is part of the new MC Mobile system family.
The Pocket MC can be downloaded from the Google Store and used as a simple entry-level machine control tool for contractors wanting a simple way to boost productivity. It can also be used as a backup on site to a more sophisticated machine control system. “You can put your phone in the cab and go to work,” said Lodge. www.topconpositioning.com
“Operators can excavate more quickly, moving the excavator fewer times, with less wear and tear on the chassis – all with the proven hydraulic, automated control the system offers. It is
manholes, trenches, and generally tight spaces.”
Lodge added: “We have had tiltrotator functionality for a number of years, but in previous systems. Now, it will be available for the automatic excavator as well. Operators are ready for this tool and once they see the new capabilities it will bring, they will not want to work without it.”

Get a better InSite into earthwork excavation with Elevation
InSite Software has launched a completely redesigned and updated version of its earthwork estimating tool, the InSite Elevation software platform.
The company says that InSite Elevation now provides a more dynamic and productive user experience and will be available in two software options: Pro and Lite.
According to Steve Warfle, product manager for Insite Software: “The Elevation platform is incredibly user-friendly with intuitive operations, that can give contractors a competitive edge.”
Earthworks can eat up a large portion of a total build budget and represents the most risk, says the
software developer. Estimators need to be able to trust the earthwork quantities and prove their numbers. To aid this, InSite Elevation Lite calculates cut and fill, stripping, strata quantities, paving and concrete materials, topsoil re-spread, areas, lengths, trench excavation and backfill.
InSite Elevation Lite is ideal for general and small contractors who need basic take-off features for estimating, says the company. It is accurate and fast with high-quality graphics and easy-to-read reports, allowing estimators to validate results.

Kohler’s new K-HEM 2504 hybrid engine
Kohler has launched two new hybrid engines which combine diesel and electric power in parallel: the K-HEM 2504 and the K-Hem 1003. The idea behind the combination is to provide the bulk of the power from the diesel engine, with the electric motor kicking in when peaks are required.
“That allows for a smaller engine to be used where currently a larger one is needed,” explains Jeffrey Wilke, product manager for Kohler Engines. “That means that in some applications there will be savings in fuel and reduced noise.”
Kohler has chosen the size of the diesel engines in the two hybrids to fall just below two thresholds. The K-HEM 1003 sits just below 19kW, the limit required for Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) under Stage V Legislation. The K-HEM 2504 sits below the limit at which Stage V legislation requires Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
The K-HEM 2504 combines a KDI 2504TCR 55.4kW diesel engine that complies with Stage V legislation and is without SCR, and a 48V electric motor that guarantees 19.5kW peak power and 9kW continued power and does not exceed safe voltage levels. The electric motor charges from the diesel one when not in use.

EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR CUMMINS
Cummins is now introducing a new ENCOMPASS Extra extended warranty programme for its latest F3.8, B4.5, B6.7 and L9 Performance Series engines. “Our Performance Series engines are designed to deliver more with less: more power and torque with less servicing and running costs. Our new extended warranty programme provides an additional benefit, giving customers the confidence and security of extra protection at a very competitive price,” said Chris Brown, Cummins Global Off-Highway Aftermarket Director.
The firm’s standard engine warranty is two years or 2,000 hours, whichever occurs first. Or, the standard warranty can be for one year with unlimited hours if the 2,000 hours is exceeded in the first year.
However, the new ENCOMPASS Extra programme provides a range of engine coverage options up to five years with unlimited hours (8,000 hours on the F3.8 engine). It can cover parts and labour or parts, labour and travel depending on customer needs.
“The simpler configuration of our Performance Series engines has enabled Cummins to offer a very competitive programme with no deductible. This has a positive impact on total cost of operation and protects the operator from unexpected costs. It reduces the owner’s risk and is ideal for machines in rental fleets,” added Brown.
According to Cummins, the higher power density of its engines enables equipment manufacturers to produce machines with more capability. Alternatively, they can consider using engines of smaller displacement to save cost without impacting machine operation.
The latest Single Module aftertreatment system is said to be easy to install, being 30% smaller and 50% lighter than the previous system. www.cummins.com

Hyundai pioneers in fuel
Hyundai Construction Equipment (HCE) is working on a project to develop hydrogen fuel cell power for excavators and forklifts. The project is being carried out in partnership with Hyundai Motors, and the group hopes to have a product market-ready by 2023. According to the firm, hydrogen fuel cells suit large construction machines because they offer a greater power density than batteries. The firm also believes that hydrogen fuel cells also offer the ability to upscale machines with ease…and can do it far better than all-electric machines powered by lithium batteries.
A fuel cell works by producing electricity from the chemical reaction between hydrogen and

oxygen. The electricity generated then becomes the power source. Since the only resulting emission is water vapour, this makes it a very clean fuel enabling manufacturers like Hyundai to meet the toughest possible air pollution requirements.
HCE signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the joint development of hydrogen fuel cell construction equipment with Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Mobis at its Mabuk Research Center in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do. This will see the three companies developing medium/large-capacity excavators (as well as forklifts) featuring fuel cell power units.
