Despite the economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, headaches remain for manufacturers, according to the latest Economic Impact Report from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).
Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), are struggling with shortages from their suppliers, especially when it comes to processing chips for some of the new smart solution systems being introduced for more efficient machine operation. Delivery and lead times are increasing, said Rod Schrader, AEM chairman, who is also chief executive of Komatsu.
Couple this with a labour shortage felt in most areas of the economy and OEMs are having to be innovative, said Schrader. More shift work and overtime is happening. But instead of OEMs increasing prices once a year, many are inching up their prices three or four times a year.
There must be a revamping of immigration laws and work regulations in the US to ease the shortage of labour, said Kip Eideberg, AEM senior vice president of government and industry. The construction equipment manufacturers must band together to drive the message home to their politicians in Washington.
As the same time, noted Eideberg, the US government should double down on getting better trade deals globally. Around 30% of the sector’s machines are exported, so lower tariffs are needed for maintaining and increasing this figure.

Indeco is on the acquisition trail
Italian attachment specialist Indeco had a record-breaking 2022 in North America. According to Michele Vitulano, global sales and marketing manager for Indeco, “The US is doing very well. We are very happy with the American market and 2022 has been the best year ever for us in America, mostly on the smaller models.”
The firm is now looking to expand its facilities in the US to meet the strong demand for
equipment. The site is also used to manufacture a number of items such as mounting brackets for hydraulic hammers and hydraulic compactor attachments.
In addition, Vitulano said Indeco is looking for a suitable business acquisition to add to Indeco’s portfolio. “We are scouting for an acquisition, a small company with a good product, (one) that has maybe been undercapitalised.”
With the firm having had great success in the compact breaker market in the US, Indeco is also looking to widen its product offering for more compact demolition tools such as cutters for use on mini excavators. Vitulano said that he believes this offers considerable business potential for the future.
On another note, Vitulano said that Indeco is now achieving its first sales of breakers into Japan, a significant success given the strength of Japanese hydraulic breaker firms in their home market. However, he said that entering the South Korean market with the Italian breakers has so far proven considerably more challenging.
Looking ahead in terms of technology, Vitulano commented that Indeco is monitoring the development of electric construction machines very closely. “We should think to the future when machines go electric,” he said.

Fayat Group president reports strong performance
The Fayat Group continues to see strong sales performance across its operations
CEO Jean-Claude Fayat explained that all companies saw high order intakes in the wake of the lockdown periods of the global pandemic and that with many of these pent-up orders are settling back to more normal levels. He commented, “We are starting to see a reduction in worldwide order intake.”
He said that this started in the UK but has also spread to Germany and France, although sales remain strong. Fayat added, “We see that also in South East Asia.”
Meanwhile, the Chinese market remains weak, “It’s stable at a low level.”
Looking worldwide, the health of the North American market remains very good for construction equipment makers, compensating for weakening in Europe. He said, “If you go to North America, it’s very good with a high order intake and a long backlog.”
Europe is facing price increasing business challenges according to Fayat. This is being seen in the construction industry and for example, road building costs are around 15-20% for example than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic, while interest rates have climbed. He commented,
IN EUROPE WE ARE QUITE ADVANCED. AND IT’S POSITIVE. WE ARE ANTICIPATING CHANGES EVEN IN THE US “ ”
“The war we are facing in Europe has not created a good climate.”
Predicting how business
challenge according to Fayat, “It was never easy to forecast the future, but now it is even harder.” “In three years we’ve had huge problems, with war.” He said that the recent problems Credit Suisse has faced suggest another banking crisis also poses a potential threat to business.
Luckily, business levels remain much healthier in the US and he commented, “It’s good. You can sense that at as everyone is very optimistic. What is good is the money from the Federal Government. We’re not expecting a downturn in the US in 2023, but who knows?

The group is already
models in the range and he said that the company is carrying out research into the use of hydrogen as a fuel. Fayat said “It will start to come and we are researching this. My personal
view is that for big machines, hydrogen might be the future.”
However, he said that the challenges of phasing out the sale of new road vehicles with internal combustion engines in Europe by 2030 remain. “It’s a question of cost.”
future regulations is also challenging. “For companies, it’s not easy to decide where we will go when we don’t know the rules.”
He did comment that some states remain reluctant to utilise sustainable technology in construction but added, “California is close to what we are doing in Europe and so is Washington State. You have similar approach to Europe.”
He added that while states in the Midwest have so far been slower to adopt sustainable construction, “It will come.”
Fayat commented that the asphalt production sector is between Europe and north America are very apparent. In Europe, modern asphalt plants are typically clad so that they look like industrial buildings while this is not common in the US. Meanwhile, asphalt plant technology is developing fast in Europe, spurred on by
tough regulations on emissions. He said, “In Europe, Ammann, Benninghoven and ourselves are looking at ways to make asphalt plants cleaner.”
He commented that the drive towards reduced plant emissions is actually quicker in China than in the US for example. The Chinese Government recognised some years ago that reducing urban pollution is a high priority.
Another area in which the North American and European markets vary widely is with asphalt paving, something that the Fayat group does accommodate with its product range. European pavers feature tamper bar screeds that help ensure higher quality paving, although productivity rates are much lower. In the US, vibration only type screeds are employed that allow long stretches of road to be paved in much shorter times, but at the risk of less consolidation and shorter wear
well-equipped to deal with market needs for both European and US customers and has invested in developing products areas. He said, “With this range we can develop organic growth in the US. We have quite good sales.”

LINK-BELT EMBRACES MACHINE AUTONOMY AND SUSTAINABILITY
Link-Belt Excavators is pushing hard towards sustainable and autonomous machine operation … two of the biggest trends in the construction industry.
“With sustainability, we have targeted emissions reductions of 30% by 2030 – when compared to 2010,” said Adam Woods, general manager of innovation and product portfolio strategy at the company.
The reduction is just one step in Link-Belt’s commitment to utilising carbon neutral machines by 2050. “We are preparing for a world that will have no diesel engines” in 2050, Woods said.
The company is exploring a variety of fuel options, including hydrogen and conversion of waste materials. Electric machine models are already in Link-Belt’s product line-up.
Utility trencher for North America
Mastenbroek is introducing its first-ever utility trencher designed specifically for North America. The Bulldog is a small footprint, compact yet powerful trencher designed to meet the need of utility cable and pipeline layers.
Autonomous machine operation is another process underway in the industry – and at Link-Belt.
The biggest challenge with alternative fuels might be ensuring consistent supplies, Woods said. “Everything is focused on the implementation of the goal, and not necessarily the support of it,” he said.
The Link-Belt 220 X4S is available with the company’s Precision Grade grade control system, technology that was developed with Trimble.
Precision Grade accuracy is now +/- 2 cm, Woods said.
“That’s all leading up to machines that are fully autonomous,” said Chris Wise, marketing director at the company.
Woods certainly sees the
there is no learning curve,” he said. www.LBXO.com
The Bulldog is 10.9m long and is designed to work in confined areas, with a forward discharge conveyor system that retracts to give a 2.5m width, making it is easy to transport.
Borrowing much of Mastenbroek’s engineering prowess from the existing 17/17 trencher, the new Bulldog features a new engine and enhanced digging mechanism. The new USspecific trencher features a Tier 4 final compliant Volvo 8litre engine offering the ideal combination of power, efficiency and emissions.
Complementing the Volvo engine is a new diesel hydrostatic drive system developed by Mastenbroek to power the new heavier digging mechanism, which can achieve the 1.8m trench depth required by US cable layers.
Gradall develops zero-emissions concept machine
zero emissions concept machine that is nearing the company’s goal of an electric-driven, highwayspeed excavator.
“With this machine, we can dig for at least two hours and drive about 60 miles,” Michael Norman, director of sales and marketing at
company believes it must develop a machine that can dig for eight hours and drive back-and-forth between jobsites.
Gradall expects to reach the hour and distance targets in the next few years. “Two to three years from now, a battery of the
same size will last twice as long,” Norman said.
The company will also have an essentially separate power system for digging, which will help extend operation. “There will be lots of regeneration with that as well,” Norman said.
Unlike a traditional hydraulic excavator, Gradall’s highway-speed solution features a telescopic boom mounted next to a separate cab sitting to the rear of a road-going chassis. This enables the machine to be independently dispatched to many locations throughout the workday, rather than requiring a low loader for transport. www.gradall.com
The Bulldog also features an offset cutting head and forward swing conveyor making it ideal for operation in cities and on highways where access is restricted and excavated material needs to be loaded onto trucks for removal offsite. A steerable undercarriage enables curved trench lines, and the track lift allows the machine to straddle
NOVEL RUBBER TYRE ROLLER
TAmmann’s asphalt plant innovation
A significant innovation from Ammann is a continuous asphalt plant being developed specifically for the North American market. This will offer capacity in the 270-360tonne/ hour range that forms the bulk of US demand and will be ready for market during the 2024 paving season.
The firm is also introducing its proven ACM Prime Asphalt-Mixing Plant to North America, which is primarily built in the US and offers the benefits of a high-capacity plant in a fully mobile package.
The ACM Prime Asphalt-Mixing Plant fits on two, two-axle trailers and remains on them upon arrival and during operation. To relocate the plant, the trailers are simply attached to trucks and moved.
The new ACM Prime is a continuous plant that is 100% mobile. Accessories such as tanks, RAP feeders, self-erecting storage silos and the control house are also on wheels. With previous models, some of these elements were stationary.
Ammann’s business development manager Carlo Machado said, “We decided
to move asphalt plants to the US and will be manufacturing here. We are working on developing the supply chain.”
John Elliott has been hired as president, North American Asphalt Plants for Ammann and explained, “The US is a continuous asphalt plant market. Ammann has got a lot of sophisticated technology applicable. We recognise this as an opportunity for Ammann and we are building a team to capitalise on it.”
Elliott said that the new, largecapacity plant will benefit from Ammann’s sophisticated technology and will feature a counterflow drum mixer with a 50% recycling capability.
Meanwhile, the cost of the compact ACM Prime Asphalt-Mixing Plant is less than a conventional stationary plant, making it easier for small businesses to enter the market. The firm says that the plant can be ready to work quickly. It arrives assembled, and plug-in components make set-up extremely fast.

XCMG is using small rollers to build trust – and ultimately to lead to sales of bigger equipment down the road.
The Chinese manufacturer will market a full line of heavy equipment in North America and Europe. That includes the RP705 Paver-Finisher.
“It is the first high-end paver produced in China and developed in China,” said Thomas Mavrudis, director of road machinery for the Chinese manufacturer.
But cracking the paving market is difficult. A breakdown of that machine can idle compactors, the plant, trucks and workers and a create a host of logistical problems. An idled paver is a contractor’s nightmare.
“It’s hard to buy a product like a paver, where reliability is so crucial, without being very familiar with the machine and the company supporting it,” Mavrudis said.
Paver demos will help, but Mavrudis sees light rollers as the most likely path to market share.
“We’ve sold some single-drum rollers in the US, and some light, compact rollers,” said Mavrudis. “Those are the door openers for us.”
The rollers, mostly in the 1.5-4,5tonne range, will be used to build trust and prove that XCMG products can perform and be supported.
Then the company will more aggressively market its premium paver.

Achieving asphalt mat density
G4Technologies Inc is introducing its innovative Real-Time Density (RTDensity) system, which allows a roller operator to monitor compaction and make adjustments in real-time to improve asphalt pavement quality. RTDensity
offers intelligent compaction, delivering quality estimates to the roller operator. With this system, contractors can receive a full picture of the quality of the road construction process.
www.volvoce.com
RTDensity is an artificial intelligence-based device that can be retrofitted on any vibratory steel drum compactor. Once installed and calibrated, RTDensity provides the roller operator critical process parameters such as the number of passes on the asphalt mat, mat temperature, coverage and an estimate of density. This is provided in a visual format. Roller operators can determine pavement quality during compaction and make necessary adjustments to achieve target density and avoid over- and under- compaction. Contractors can verify quality and productivity during construction instead of waiting until work is complete.

SBM Mineral Processing (SBM) is delighted at securing its first 10 orders for the company’s new 600tonnes/hour REMAX 600 impact crusher. The Austrian firm’s new plant uses artificial intelligence (AI) which, SBM says, paves the way for autonomous crushing. Extensive sensor technology, including cameras, records and evaluates the REMAX 600’s feed material as well as intermediate and end products. In real time, those values reach centralised digital labs at SBM, where they are further analysed. Necessary adjustments are then made on the ‘digital twin’ of the working machine and retransmitted directly to the REMAX 600 in the field. Known as ‘Crusher 4.0’, the REMAX 600 was developed together with the University of Leoben. Large-scale field tests of a REMAX 600 are currently being carried out at an Austrian quarry partner.
“We have made three REMAX 600 plants so far. The first has already done 1500 hours of testing with an Austrian quarry customer. All has been good so far on testing,” said Erwin Schneller, SBM managing director. “The first sold machine will be delivered to a customer this year, with the others being delivered by mid-next year.”
Another big machine for SBM is the JAWMAX 400 jaw crusher, said to feature one of the most advanced diesel-electric drive concepts on the market. A combination of a fuel-efficient onboard diesel and a performance-tuned generator powers the plant’s materials processing.

idle time running compared to the conventional machines.
Under its Z.ERA programme, Dynapac is investing and further refining alternative fuels and green systems, such as battery-driven engines and hydrogen power solutions. The initial phase of the programme has focused on offering a product portfolio that is optimally suited for inner-city environment applications such as smaller road assignments like bicycle lanes and repair works.
There is also less wear and tear on the plates due to fewer fluids and moving parts. Additionally, operator comfort is heightened with lower noise levels and no exhaust fumes. www.dynapac.com
MB Crusher says its load capacity of 0.61m3, which the Italy-based manufacturer says makes the bucket “compact, versatile, and highly manoeuvrable.” The new MB-HDS220 padding bucket should also make work easier, reduce processing time, and save on operating costs, the company says.
The size of the mouth opening is 2.2m, a width which will allow easy loading by ensuring that the tracks or wheels of the carrier machine remain clean, says MB Crusher.
The inlet is designed to convey material quickly to the rotors. MB Crusher says that maintenance is simple with greasing being centralised and done onsite, as with all its products. The coupling system is designed to allow a maximum margin of movement of the operating machine. This system allows excellent visibility of the material to be worked on and off the site.
As with the other HDS models, the MB-HDS-220 allows the operator to change the rotors quickly and directly onsite. This makes it a versatile machine with which different types of material can be processed efficiently and quickly.

ALLU rolls out two new drums for North American market
Screening bucket manufacturer ALLU has launched two new products for the North American market, the Veloci and the D Series variable drum.
The ALLU Veloci is designed for compact-size excavators, loaders, telehandlers, tractors, and skid-steers.
The bucket’s screening stars are made from polyurethane material, which allows the material to fall through without crushing or shredding material. Large material and debris is left in the bucket while separated from reusable material. This feature is especially handy with composting, when the vegetation is left in the bucket and separated from the reusable material rather than being
shredded into the end product.
Finland-based ALLU says the Veloci’s screening stars create a rotating motion inside the bucket, screening and mixing the material, producing a quality endproduct for use.
The Veloci series is available in five size models for a variety of screening, mixing, and aerating applications. All models are equipped with hydraulic motors for maximum processing power. The drum amount dictates the amount of hydraulic motors used. The Veloci has a double-skin floor, making it robust and durable even when coping with demanding environments and materials. www.allu.net

A new system from Topcon Positioning is taking the firm into a new market segment. Mark Contino is vice-president of North American Retail Distribution at Topcon Positioning Systems and commented that the technology is now well-accepted on larger projects, “We’ve been doing GPS since the late 1990s. It’s not new anymore. Everyone uses it now.”
Contino said that while many firms use Topcon machine control tools on large items of construction equipment, there has been a pent-up demand for simpler units to use on compact machines.
The company is therefore now offering its MC-Mobile system to meet the needs of users of compact equipment, many of which are much smaller contractors. The system has been tailored for use with customers such as owner-operators. Contino said, “A lot of these companies don’t even have an office. Their office is the cab of their truck.” He continued, “We’ve taken machine control and entered into the compact machine space.”
A laser can be used to take points onsite, a task taking 25-30 minutes, and the customer can then use the data to build a model using a tablet device. The same tablet then can be mounted on the item of compact equipment for the operator to follow the design.

Command Alkon launches Customer Portal mobile application
Software and solutions provider Command Alkon is introducing a “Customer Portal” mobile application that is designed to provide visibility in the construction materials delivery cycle.
Command Alkon says Customer Portal allows materials buyers to streamline their operations. The new package delivers instant, reliable data sharing and will help materials buyers create, manage, and track orders 24 hours a day.
The new app is fully integrated with the company’s COMMANDbatch, TrackIt, and Command Alkon Dispatch systems, which are called COMMANDseries, Integra, and Dispatch. The manufacturer says that the new app can also integrate with other third-party systems through open APIs.
“If materials are late, it creates a ripple effect that affects every single jobsite activity and significantly adds to project costs; the value of Customer Portal is that it answers the question ‘where’s my truck,’” said Ranjeev Teelock, chief product officer at Command Alkon.
“Ticket data shared through Customer Portal informs buyers when the driver picks up the materials and the exact quantities that are on the way to the job. Sharing order information with customers gives them the insight that they need to improve planning and utilisation and can dramatically cut down on unnecessary phone calls – by as much as 30%.”
Sharing truck locations and ETAs provides visibility from dispatch to delivery and gives customers confidence and trust in knowing where orders are and when they will arrive, says Command Alkon. www.commandalkon.com

The bigger picture
Sophisticated simulation from CM Labs
The recent acquisition of B2W Software by Trimble will have a major benefit for this specialist firm. Greg Norris, marketing communications director at B2W sees a huge potential and commented, “There’s not much overlap between the product ranges. There is tremendous potential for integration. The Trimble acquisition means we’ll be able to expand worldwide.”
He said that B2W has long ensured that its packages work alongside Trimble’s Viewpoint offering and that being, “…under the same umbrella,” will deliver benefits for areas such as field tracking, accounting and equipment managing. He added, “Trimble is focussed on the same things.”
Canadian simulator specialist CM Labs is now offering improved training tools with its latest generation systems. The simulators from the firms can now be supplied in multiple units for customers and with packages developed for specific training needs for operators of a wide range of construction machines.
The personalised learning systems can be used to identify and then address strengths and weaknesses of each operator, rather than requiring everyone to complete a set of basic tasks. The system records factors such as productivity, machine wear, operating safety and fuel consumption, providing detailed reports on each trainee. This allows the abilities of skilled operators
to be determined, as well as allowing training for less experienced operators.
Targeted learning boosts overall skills and according to a spokesperson for the firm, “You can show a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency.”
The metrics can be customised to suit a client’s needs. Remote training can be carried out in multiple locations at the same time and weather factors can also now be included in learning. Operators can even do virtual walkrounds of machines before starting work. Meanwhile, non-operators can also undergo basic machine training to provide greater awareness, helping boost site safety.
www.cm-labs.com
Some customers do want to use the cloud while others still prefer having software on their own servers.
The firm has been able to adapt its offering to meet current industry demand. Norris commented, “The last 10 years have seen a change in technology.” He explained that now customers are used to online training, as well as flexible and hybrid working, methods that suit the use of its product offering.
A major trend is on the data side for both B2W and its new parent, Trimble. Connecting data and turning it into usable information is a key issue in the sector. For example, accounting systems traditionally deliver data at the end of each month. Norris said that this can be made more efficient using technology, “We’re trying to change that and make it more immediate.”
Another new development is an employee app that allows performance tracking, instead of using field logs. Norris said, “A lot of customers have operators that work on their own.” The app works in conjunction with the field log and tracks clock-in and clock-out times, allowing more efficient logging of working.

“For some OEMs, the 4.5litre is too large,” said Wendt. “The JD4
All the Next Generation engines can integrate alternative fuels, yet have no unnecessary technology, Wendt said. “We’re not using technology where we don’t have
The JD4 will power OEM products such as water pumps, telehandlers and woodchippers. While released in North America, the engine will also be a good fit in Europe, said Florent Goujon, account manager for Deere. Its use of renewable fuels is necessary in the region, and European businesses tend to prefer smaller machines, he said. “When thinking about how to move toward a low-carbon future, we as an industry need to be open to a variety of solutions to meet the vast and varied needs of the off-highway market. There will be no singular solution to reaching our goal of low and near-zerocarbon emissions,” said Pierre Guyot, senior vice- president of John Deere Power Systems. www.deere.com
4 Final/Stage V engines do not have that large radiator, and therefore are more much compact and light, Cammauf said.
The F34 powerpack stands out for low operating costs and extremely easy maintenance in a compact layout, the company said. This solution with mounted ATS allows for layout optimisation and plug-and-play installation. The Tier 4 Final compliant ATS, without DPF, minimises engine downtime and operating costs with a 600hour service interval.
Engine displacement of the F34 is 3.4litres. Maximum power is 55kW and torque is 318Nm.
Cammauf describes FPT as the “biggest engine company no one has ever heard of.” In the past the engines were branded by other OEMs. The company is now branding them as FPT – an acronym for Fiat Powertrain Technologies. www.FPTindustrial.com
HYDROGEN ENGINES FROM HYUNDAI
Hyundai Doosan Infracore (HDI) is aiming to mass produce internal combustion engines (ICE) that use hydrogen as fuel in 2025. The runs on hydrogen in 2023, with full-scale testing planned for 2024, to be followed by full-scale mass production in 2025.
suitable engine system for mid-to-large-sized vehicles and vehicles for long distances. A single charge of 10 minutes enables a distance of up to 500km, and HDI says that the units are 25-30% more economical than fuel cells or battery packs when vehicle price and maintenance costs are considered.
A clean running engine
Cummins is introducing a fuelagnostic engine platform able to run on hydrogen, biogas and diesel. This innovative 15litre engine offers OEMs the opportunity to accelerate the decarbonisation of heavy-duty off-highway applications.
The new platform is designed for the next level of emissions controls and offers a significant increase in power density with a more compact installation envelope. This allows OEMs to increase machine capability and productivity with no impact on running cost.
hydrogen ICE unit, an 11litre class engine that produces a power output of 300kW and a torque of 1700Nm at 2000RPM. It meets the Tier 5/Stage 5/Euro 7 regulations which require the emissions to be reduced by 90% of the current level to meet Zero CO2 below 1g/kWh) and Zero Impact Emission (Zero Emission in EU).
Hydrogen engines are powered by low-purity hydrogen, making them durable, economical and energy-dense, which makes them the most
HDI plans to leverage its existing engine technology and facilities to reduce costs and accelerate commercialisation. The new hydrogen engines will be installed on commercial vehicles such as trucks and large buses, and construction equipment for validation by 2024, and full-scale mass production is planned for 2025.
HDI is also introducing EV battery packs and plug-in full hybrid powertrains so that customers will have power options.

Big power from Kubota’s micro-hybrid
Kubota’s new V3307 Micro-Hybrid Engine, the first of the company’s micro-hybrid powerplants, is “the perfect solution for short, highdemand applications,” says the manufacturer.
At its launch, Ko Shiozaki, Kubota manager for sales promotions in the engine division,
said that the V3307 provides power assistance during peak performance, using electric power to compensate for high loads instantaneously.
For some applications, high load is required for only a fraction of the total work time. The engine’s 10kW electric motor-assist
function allows customers to match those high load demands and select an engine with an output power tailored to the low and medium load regions of frequent use.
The engine has a straightforward design with three main components: a DC converter, a lithium-ion battery, and a motor generator attached to the existing engine model.
The hybrid system is controlled by the engine control unit (ECU). This is made possible by rewriting the software in the existing ECU, available only to Kubota engines, according to the manufacturer. No additional ECU is required for hybrid control.
The engine is equipped with a 48V motor generator, providing high torque with quick response – boosting overall work efficiency. At low speeds, the motor provides up to 70Nm of torque assistance.

architecture of the engine uses a common base engine with cylinder heads and fuel systems specifically tailored for hydrogen, natural gas, diesel and biofuels including HVO.
The 15litre hydrogen engine will be available with ratings from 300-400kW and a peak torque of 2,600Nm. For applications powered by renewable biogas, this engine will offer slightly lower power ratings with a peak torque of 2,500Nm available. The diesel version will offer a broad power range of 335-485kW, with a 3,200Nm peak torque. www.cummins.com
DEUTZ ENGINE UTILISES ALTERNATIVE FUELS
Deutz believes electric engines will be key players in the future. Yet Markus Mueller, the company’s chief will require alternatives to electricity in the future.
That’s one reason for the release of the TCD 3.9 engine, developed in partnership with John Deere. The engine can be fuelled by diesel or lower-emission alternatives such as hydrogen and HVO, yet it delivers the power that contractors still (and always will) need, Mueller said.
The TCD 3.9 provides 130kW, a power
Hydrogen
reach, Mueller said. He believes 100kW is the threshold for electric power. “After that, we need combustion,” he said.
Mueller is quick to point out that there is a place for electric engines. They are a
that require less power – and likely always will be.
“Electric will get more and more penetration at the bottom, with lowerpowered machines,” he said. Above 100kW, “we will talk about combustion engines.”
In addition, the larger machines

Kubota is introducing a new 3.8litre internal combustion (IC) engine that runs on hydrogen. This four-cylinder power unit features a similar design to petrol/gasoline engines and uses spark ignition, delivering 85kW. The power output suits a number of duties such as a 45kVA generator.
The firm also says that it offers diesel engines able to run on gas to liquid (GTL) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuels complying with the appropriate quality standards, enabling a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 90% with no engine modifications needed.
Kubota believes that a hybrid system combining engine and electrical power is an effective solution for reducing CO2 from industrial engines, power units which require high output and high load levels.
The D1803 P1 Hybrid engine is compact and highly robust with an integrated motor generator embedded within the flywheel housing. With the P1 Hybrid engine, the motor only assists for the brief periods in which high output is required.
The switch between engine and electric motor drive will be offered with the D1105 P2 Hybrid engine, which offers a rated output of 18.5kW at 3000 rpm. This D1105 P2 Hybrid model also offers the ability to transition between diesel engine drive and electric motor drive while in operation. The advantage here is that in areas where emissions or noise are a concern, the engine can be stopped and switched to the electric motor. Production of the new D1105 P2 Hybrid is scheduled to start in 2025. www.kubota.com
Clean small engines
The Kohler Small Displacement (KSD) engine is a state-of-the-art unit for the under 19KW class.
Benefiting from an innovative electronically-controlled indirect injection combustion system, performance is said to be maximised in every operating condition. High low-end torque values allow operation at low engine speeds, saving fuel. The electronic injection system results in no visible black smoke, while noise and vibrations are minimised.

machines tend to be used in more developed areas.
Deutz also has developed the TCG 7.8 H2 hydrogen engine. The six-cylinder engine is based on an existing design, and despite producing 220kW of power is both carbon neutral and very quiet.
In principle, the hydrogen engine can be used in all current Deutz applications, and even in the on-highway segment, the company said. After initially being piloted in a genset for generating electricity, the engine will now be trialled in an 18tonne truck.
