Construction company Hazell Bros has announced that it has purchased a portion of VEC Civil Engineering, which was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Downer Group.

VEC’s precast manufacturing, steel workshop and bridge construction divisions have now joined Hazell Bros’ portfolio, which includes civil construction, quarries, concrete, plant hire, transport, asset servicing and industrial services.

This acquisition includes the transfer of the majority of VEC staff and a number of active projects.

Hazell Bros is a family-owned business that began in Tasmania in 1944 and has since expanded to cover 800 staff over several

“This is a significant step in our long-term plan to expand our presence in the northern region of the state [Tasmania],” Hazell Bros says.

“This repower project demonstrates that decarbonisation is also possible with Liebherr machines previously supplied with diesel engines,” executive vice president of R&D, engineering and manufacturing Oliver Weiss says.

Commissioned at Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine site in WA, the renamed R 9400 E will be powered by a hydrogen offboard power unit (OPU).

Designed and developed by Fortescue, the OPU is currently undergoing site-based testing within Fortescue’s purpose-built zero emission testing area at the Christmas Creek mining site.

“The modular design of Liebherr equipment makes it possible to repower existing diesel excavators to new zero emission configurations, such as electric powertrains,” Weiss says.

“This means that the diesel equipment customers buy today is also futureproofed for many years to come.”

Toro has appointed Semco Equipment Sales to distribute its landscaping equipment

Toro supplies landscaping equipment to sports fields and grounds around Sydney, Canberra and the southern and western regions of New South Wales.

Bulk2024

2024 will see the Australian Bulk Handling Expo return to Melbourne in September, showcasing the latest technologies available in the area of bulk solids transport and handling

From mining and quarrying to grain storage, cement manufacturing and port logistics, bulk solids handling covers a wide variety of industries. Technologies on display at Bulk2024 will include conveyors, silos, monitoring solutions and lifting equipment to name just a few.

Expressions of interest from companies looking to exhibit on the floor are now open. Industry leaders including AGI, GE Silos and HE Silos Forbes have already joined the show.

Bulk2024 show director Lauren Chartres says the event is the only dedicated Australian expo for producers and handlers of bulk commodities such as grain and building materials.

For Queensland’s Crushing and Screening Equipment, the option to rent a Hidromek wheel loader and excavator from Onetrak offered the best way to introduce the brand

Earthmovers & Excavators recently caught up with Anthony Worth, owner and director of Crushing and Screening Equipment (CSE), to talk about the hiring of a Hidromek HMK 640 wheel loader and HMK 410 excavator from distributor Onetrak – the first time CSE had used the Hidromek brand.

CSE specialises in fabrication, engineering, repair and rebuild solutions for the extractive industry, as well as crushing and screening contracting.

Originally from Wollongong, Worth was born and raised in the steel manufacturing industry. Even as a young boy he was fascinated with machinery and always had a spanner in hand. He began his diesel mechanic apprenticeship at the steel works in Port Kembla, where he gained invaluable experience in various manufacturing practices, including fabrication, mechanical

rebuilds and repairs and production cost analysis.

Having set up his own contracting business in Queensland, CSE has grown to 15 staff located in Mackay and Mt Isa, servicing the entire state. With such a deep understanding of the industry, its challenges and production costs, CSE can add value through providing advice, repairs and cost-effective solutions, he says.

Working with Onetrak

In his business dealings, Worth was already familiar working with the Onetrak team at Caboolture.

CSE owns a Striker HQR1112 impact crusher and has it serviced through the Caboolture branch. So, when an opportunity recently came up for a six-month project, discussions with Onetrak began.

Onetrak territory manager for Queensland Colin Bussell came up with a proposal to rent equipment from Onetrak, which suited what CSE was looking for. Although Worth hadn’t driven or owned any Hidromek equipment before, after visiting the branch and speaking with Onetrak managing director David Hazell, he decided to hire an HMK 640 wheel loader and an HMK 410 excavator.

engine delivering 324 horsepower (242kW) and 1,600Nm of torque, boasts a substantial 26.3-tonne operating weight and five cubic metre bucket capacity.

Worth notes that he and his team have found the wheel loader to be powerful, fast and very economical. The operators have also found it quite comfortable and comparable to the other brands they have in their fleet. CSE is especially happy with the bucket size and Worth enjoys using the steering wheel control, though some of his staff prefer the joystick controls.

Worth also praises the HMK 410 excavator, citing its stability, computer screen and impressive cycle times for its size.

Overall, he and CSE are pleased with the machines. According to Worth, the machines are reliable and efficient, and the rental contract includes servicing, which he says was a huge relief. Onetrak has provided excellent service and support, with its staff promptly resolving any issues that arise. Worth says he would definitely consider renting from Onetrak again in the future.

The Hidromek HMK 640 wheel loader impressed with its powerful performance

After being in construction for more than 20 years, Paul Kasparsons decided he wanted to begin a new chapter in his life – starting his own business.

After working for large contractors, he pursued work flexibility and the freedom to spend more time with his kids and family.

Kaspar Hire

Kasparsons is the founder and director of Kaspar Hire, a business that hires out mini plant equipment.

Even though he started a business with the hope of having more flexibility, ironically, he now works seven days a week.

“I enjoy it, it’s what I want to do. It doesn’t feel like work and it’s not a chore, It’s great,” he says.

“I’ve got a little warehouse with an office and plenty of room for my gear, I’m actually really enjoying my time operating Kaspar Hire.”

Based in the south east Melbourne suburb of Lynbrook, the company predominately focuses on dry hire of plant but also offers wet hire, where an operator can be hired alongside the machine to do the work for a client.

Operating since November last year, the company credits TMHA for supplying a Toyota Huski 4SDK4 skid steer loader – the most commonly hired piece of machinery at Kaspar Hire.

“The skid steer has been running well and has been the most popular machine in my fleet,” Kasparsons says.

The company director says that being a Toyota man helped influence his purchase.

“The Toyota brand has been with me for years. My first vehicle was a LandCruiser and I’ve had Toyotas throughout my whole working career,” Kasparsons says.

“I hadn’t used Huski in the past, but I remembered the Toyota brand and I read a few reviews, saw a few little clips on YouTube and decided to go with it.”

Small and nimble

Kasparsons attributes the Huski skid steer loader’s popularity to its versatility, for working in tight spaces, as well as its ease of transportation.

“I think a lot of people see it advertised and they just feel that

they can actually operate it. It’s small enough to be to be nimble and people feel comfortable controlling it,” he says.

With a height of 1.8m and a width of 900mm, the compact size makes it easily transportable on a trailer, so clients can take it away and bring it back with no issues.

“I wanted a machine that was small because that’s what my business model is based off – mini plant hire and tight access,” Kasparsons says.

The small and compact nature of the Huski 4SDK4 does not limit its capabilities however, as it can handle a 320kg operating load.

Applications

With its compact size providing ease of access to properties, Kaspar Hire has seen its clients use the Huski skid steer loader for moving material from the front yard to the

back of a house for example – saving on manual labour.

Kasparsons says the Huski machine has thrived when moving general soil, mulch and crushed rock.

“Just recently, I was actually using it to dig in a backyard and, because the bucket has got teeth on it, I was able to really get in there and I had plenty of torque to actually dig it out. It performed really well,” he says.

“I moved all that dirt out to the front yard and then brought in a whole lot of topsoil.

“Most of our clients use it for topsoiling, crushed rock and mulching. Occasionally people have used it to do some clean-ups in yards –filling up mini skips because it’s got the range to reach over the side.”

TMHA service

Kasparsons says the relationship with TMHA has been highly positive,

with the manufacturer offering easy service and genuine care for the machine.

“Communication has been great, I’ve only had the machine for a couple of months now and we had our first 50-hour service a while ago. The service was good with no issues at all,” he says.

Looking to the future, he says if there was a new machine to be purchased it would be another Huski skid steer from TMHA.

“It’s been our most popular machine, so I’d be looking at purchasing another one,” he says.

Half century

is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, with its close relationship with Volvo Construction Equipment the core to its ongoing success.

When Chamberlain John Deere sold off its dealerships around Australia in 1973 to focus on manufacturing, two enterprising sales executives within the company saw an opportunity too good to pass up.

Ron Rafferty and Rob Jowett – work colleagues who had spent their early careers with agricultural equipment maker Chamberlain Industries before John Deere took over – made the leap of faith to purchase the WA dealership and start up a business in their own right.

The result was CJD Equipment, which began operations in February 1974. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, half a century on, CJD is regarded as one of the country’s leading distributors of construction equipment for the resources, civil, agriculture and forestry sectors. The portfolio includes world-class brands such as Volvo Construction Equipment (CE), SDLG, Kenworth, DAF Trucks, Isuzu and Fuso.

Still headquartered in WA, the company has spread its wings to 23 nationwide branches, many of which also serve as parts and service support outlets for every product the company sells. It’s among the top 100 listed private companies in Australia.

To celebrate the milestone, CJD held a gala celebration at Perth’s Optus Stadium in February, attended by more than 400 past and present

staff, guests and representatives of the core manufacturers of the equipment that fill the company’s display yards.

Onwards and upwards Rafferty, now CJD executive chairman, speaks of the pride he and Jowett have in building the business up from its humble origins.

“CJD started with 28 employees and turned over $4.5 million [in 2023 dollars] in its first full year. Today, it has about 600 employees and brought in nearly $1 billion in sales revenue for the 2023 calendar year,” he says.

This connection is exemplified right from the top. Rafferty and Jowett have been in partnership now for all those 50 years and been personal friends for more than 60. In 2008, they passed on the management reins to Alan Barnett, who first joined CJD in 2001, and remains at the helm today as managing director.

Jowett reiterates that the company’s growth and achievements were “due to the quality of the people that we’ve employed”.

“We’ve been very lucky. We’ve had some wonderful people come along on this journey with us,” he says.

“And it has been a memorable journey. When we began, we were of course selling Chamberlain and John Deere equipment, before establishing farm equipment dealerships throughout Australia, while still

continuing with this business in WA. And we were selling enough to make the business very successful.

“Very early on, we acquired the White Truck franchise for WA. When they went bankrupt, we were very fortunate to be able to pick up Kenworth trucks in WA, and a little while later we became the Australian distributor for Volvo Construction Equipment, where we are the importer, the wholesaler and the retailer.”

Jowett says the industry has seen a cavalcade of businesses come and go during the five decades.

“There isn’t one of those original truck and construction equipment businesses in existence in the way we used to know them. CJD is the exception,” he says.

“We’ve always been at the same address, doing the same thing, all the while expanding our offerings and adding other locations.”

Rafferty says the future for CJD holds great promise.

“Not only do we have a great team of people, but we are also very fortunate to represent some of the best world’s brands,” he says.

“And with names like that, you can’t help but attract other good people to the company.

“As a company, we are always exploring opportunities to grow. Our longevity is testament to the principles and core values that have always driven us, underpinned by our people.

“We look forward to the next 50 years of CJD Equipment.”

Barnett says he is privileged to be able to build on the foundations laid down by Rafferty and Jowett.

“I’ve been managing director for 15 years and the time has flown by,” he says.

“As we continue to grow, the key is to ensure that our people always feel part of the CJD family.

“We need to grow organically through improved performance and best practice. We need to grow by acquisition. We need to review our branch network continually to ensure we provide the highest levels of service to our customers. And we need to look for business opportunities that will enable the entire group to grow, not just for the company, but also the staff and their livelihoods.”

stone on the climb to its current heights. Less than 10 years after the agreement, the company had taken over as national importer and distributor for the entire Volvo CE business in Australia.

Now, almost 32 years later, the working association is rock solid, with the partnership continuing to reap dividends for both parties.

Volvo CE head of sales region international Joakim Arndorw flew in from Sweden to visit several CJD branches throughout Australia – a trip culminating in the 50th anniversary celebrations in Perth.

“Volvo has been very happy with the relationship and that’s why it’s still continuing,” he says.

“We have always looked at Australia as a market where we can develop the product better, we are always after feedback to improve.

“The machines that Volvo sell are tested for all the environments that they are being used in. Australian customers can be assured that the machines have been thoroughly trialled in local conditions.

“Australia has some of the harshest conditions in the world, from heat to remoteness to dust, and we regularly test our products so that customers know they’re cared for and thought of that way.

“We sell about 800 units in Australia annually – articulated haulers, crawler excavators, wheeled excavators, wheel loaders and road machinery – and we’re constantly

improving our machines. I think we have the best in the business.

“And it’s important to have really good partners like CJD that take care of the machines when they are in the market being used by the customers. Because I think to be successful you need to have good products but also have good support.”

Electric moves

Arndorw says that while Volvo continues to innovate and improve traditional engines, the big focus moving forward is on sustainability and the development of electric mobility machines.

It’s the next step forward in Volvo CE’s ambition to reach net zero value chain greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 – alongside development of hydrogen fuel cell solutions and more sustainable internal combustion engine products – and is part of Volvo Group’s target to have at least 35 per cent of its sales of vehicles fully electric by 2030.

“That means that by 2040, all new Volvo Group products sold shall have net-zero emissions,” Arndorw says.

“So, our target is to sell 35 per cent electric machines by 2030 and we have taken the first step here now in Australia, by launching electric compact excavators and electric compact wheel loaders, which are being tested at the moment.”

Using them is relatively simple, he says.

“You can either charge with a

fast charger or with a regular power socket for the smaller machines,” Arndorw explains.

“There’s still a lot of development going on in this area when it comes to battery management and battery capacity, but this will happen fairly quickly.

“We’re moving to being solution providers: the days of just selling a product are changing. We’re trying to provide the complete solution to customers for them to reduce their emissions and not just for the product, but for them.

“Our customers need full servicing operations, package support, the data connectivity; and it’s information that we can provide to help them be more efficient and get the right product offering.”

Strong relationship

Arndorw says CJD’s 50th anniversary was an achievement worth commemorating.

“When you have done 50 years, it’s important that you celebrate that, because it’s a really good achievement. And the dinner event showed how proud the people and the employees of CJD were to work for the company and to carry the Volvo brand,” he says.

Barnett says CJD works well with Volvo because they share the same goal and desire.

“Partnerships that have the same vision achieve greatness together,” he says.

“There’s always the ups and downs over the journey, but with Volvo we built not just the working relationship, but friendships, and I think that’s the other thing that comes out of it.

“It becomes very personal. It’s not just a job. It’s not just a business. It’s not an e-mail relationship. That makes a difference because we care.

“We represent ourselves to the customers. We’re one together always. You know we can’t do it alone. And Volvo can’t. But together we can.”

Servicing the Asia-Pacific region

since 2008, Astec Australia is a subsidiary of US-based Astec Industries which, through its extensive collection of brands, encompasses everything from crushing and screening equipment and bulk material handling systems to asphalt and concrete production.

Founded in the US in 1972, the company expanded globally with a focus on manufacturing equipment from ‘rock to road’. That growth was achieved both through its own innovation and by acquiring and building some of the world’s leading brands.

In 2021 the decision was made to rebrand, and all 16 subsidiary companies – including KPI, JCI, Breaker Technology, Osborn and Telsmith – were brought together under the Astec name.

“There’s a lot we do,” Astec material solutions business line manager Adam Gordon says.

“People don’t realise how diverse we are. We’ve got tracked jaw crushers and scalpers, tracked screening plants, tracked cone and impactor plants, as well as materials handling systems.”

Tracked plants

Astec services its customers from locations throughout Australia, and demand for its products is high.

“Australia represents a high proportion of the world market for tracked plant,” Gordon says.

“There’s strong demand here for high-quality, high-production, solid and reliable equipment.”

To meet that growing demand, Astec continues to invest in its manufacturing facilities. Its factory in Omagh, Northern Ireland –which produces the company’s mobile crushers and screens for international markets, including Australia – has seen several expansions in recent years.

“We’ve transferred our US tracked plant designs to Omagh,” Gordon says.

“That whole area of Northern Ireland is a key manufacturing hub, with well-established logistics supply chains and all the economic efficiencies that it brings.

“So, as well as benefits such as reduced shipping costs, manufacturing in Omagh also freesup manufacturing space in our other facilities around the world. If we need to supply additional tracked units, we can simply dial up production at one of our US factories.”

As to why mobile plant is proving to be so popular, Gordon says it’s down to flexibility and reliability.

“We’ve been building mobile crushers and screens for more than 30 years,” Gordon says.

“And, over that time, we’ve been committed to a program of continuous improvement. Through our own innovation and by responding to feedback from our customers, we’ve been able to develop a range of tracked plant that is robust, reliable and designed specifically for Australian conditions.”

Another benefit is that mobile equipment can be moved around and between sites, and used for different products, thereby taking advantage of a fluctuating market, he says.

“Tracked equipment is easy to relocate. And that ability to go from job to job is a real advantage for operators.

“If you look at a lot of our civil projects, a tracked plant will be delivered and from there you can add a jaw, a scalper, a screen and a cone – all of a sudden you’ve got a 200-plus tonne an hour crushing plant onsite.

“It’s then crushing 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes a month for a couple of months before moving on to the next project.”

The FT2650 can handle production rates of up to 400 tonnes per hour. And, according to Gordon, the crusher has another significant advantage.

Other crushing equipment could seize up or become damaged when trying to handle difficult material, but the FT2650 comes with an optional

hydraulic tramp iron relief system that eliminates the issue.

“In a traditional crusher, a piece of steel that’s stronger than the crusher would cause enormous stress to the machine. You’ll bend a shaft or next time it happens it’ll break or, worst case, crack the jaw frame,” Gordon says.

But the FT2650’s hydraulic relief feature allows pressure spikes to be relieved quickly in the crusher, so the operator can hit reset and then re-start production.

“When an uncrushable comes through the FT2650, it is not a major problem, and if the plant shuts down for any reason, with material in the jaw, the operator can hit relieve and cycle the jaw hydraulically, safely crushing that material out of the chamber without any stress on the frame,” Gordon says.

This reduces maintenance costs and increases plant availability, while also providing significantly higher safety for operators.

“It also means someone doesn’t have to manually open the jaw crusher. They can stay safely outside the jaw crusher chamber and the rock is broken up without exposing the operator to danger.”

Living the dream

“I wanted to be a builder growing up. Then I went to boarding school.”

As is the case for many young women who may thrive in a trade or engineering role, Toneille Rowlands found in school that an education or even an interest in non-traditional careers for women just wasn’t possible. It was therefore a circuitous route and a chance conversation that eventually set her back on the path to the construction industry.

“I tried everything, including working as an operations manager at a cosmetics company,” she explains.

“It was there, doing the shop fit outs, when I got into a discussion with the project manager and that was how I found out about doing a construction management degree.

“My early interest in the industry came from renovating houses with my family while growing up, so I decided I was going to enrol and have a career change.

“At uni the main thing that you get told is get into the industry as soon as you can, so I started labouring and did that for around six months before landing a position at Demex as a construction cadet.”

Over the last five years Rowlands has worked her way through the ranks of Queensland-based demolition, excavation and remediation business Demex, and is now in the position of project manager, overseeing mostly demolition projects.

“I like managing people, but I also like having multiple fronts of work and a lot of things going on,” she says.

“The more exposure I had to the industry, whether it was in contracts, or estimating or whatever it might have been, the more I was pulled back to being on site, seeing what was going on, having the ability to assess opportunities and risks, and be a part of that project coming together. I think it’s really rewarding.

“I fell into demolition, but I absolutely wouldn’t change for the world. I have so much passion for it now.”

All in the planning Rowlands says that, having always been a hands-on person, her current project management role is a way for her to apply her management background but also be on site and get

stuck into resolving the challenges that can come with demolishing a large structure.

“That’s why I love doing what I’m doing now – following a project all the way through to completion. We go in and have this massive building when we start and get to the end of it with an empty, clean site ready to go for the building work.”

Such is the usual progression for a Demex demolition. However, Rowlands is currently working on a long-term project in Lithgow, NSW where a large amount of demolition and remediation work has been underway over the past eight months at a historic manufacturing site.

Having begun operation in 1912, the site is still handling production for the likes of the Australian Defence Force, but many buildings on the site have needed to be demolished or reconstructed, with hazardous materials for the project team to contend with.

that it’s included a lot of construction,” Rowlands says.

“Everything that we’ve had to remediate in the buildings, like removing the asbestos roof for example, we then reconstruct and replace it.

“The scope has grown considerably from when we first got there.

Initially, the focus was on asbestos removal and we had two buildings to demolish. As the confidence from the client grew, we were asked to do construction work as well.

“As that wasn’t planned for at the beginning of the project, that has definitely been the biggest challenge

– to fit it into the timeline. And, obviously, we’ve had to manage many more subcontractors and deal with material shortages. With it being in a regional town, it also takes longer to find people to do the work, source the materials and get the materials to site.”

With the buildings being so old, a lot of the project has been a process of discovery as well to see what materials need to be handled and how they can be demolished, removed safely and what is required before reconstruction.

“With asbestos, it’s in a lot more products than what most people

think, and we are continuously finding it on this project,” Rowlands says.

“But it’s been good challenge. We’ve tried to do the demolition and construction concurrently, so we stay within the original timeframe for the contract works. The other thing is, it’s an operational facility –so they’re still manufacturing and have defence personnel coming in and out, adding to the challenges of project management. So, it’s just about managing our people and construction partners to make sure that they know what’s going on, we minimise the impact to the manufacturing operations and everyone is staying safe.”

Rowlands says that demolition as an aspect of the construction industry is often overlooked, despite it being rich in opportunities. Partly, she says, it’s down to there being a lack of formal education to funnel people into it.

“Demolition is a very ‘learn on the job’ sector of the industry,” she says.

“There’s no education within Australia around demolition. Apart from getting a demolition licence,

there’s nothing that you can do separately like a TAFE course. I’m at the end of my construction management degree now, but we might have touched on it only once or twice in a four-year degree, so there’s no real conversation around it.

“Overseas is a little bit different. There’s a bit more to do in America and England, but definitely, in Australia, to find somebody that has a specialised background in demolition is pretty unheard of. I didn’t think I would go into it myself, but I have no regrets. It’s been an incredible journey so far.”

Demolition dearth

As Melbourne Wide Demolition owner Moira Linton pointed out to Earthmovers & Excavators when discussing her career, women working in project management or on-site roles within demolition are far and few between.

Rowlands says she has experienced the same paucity of female talent in the industry, which was a driver for her to join the National Association of Women in Construction in order to broaden her network.

“I really felt like there was a lack of representation for women in the industry based on my experience so far,” she says.

“Even at uni, when guest speakers would come in to talk about the industry, they were never women. So, I went to NAWIC looking for ways to reach out to other women in the industry and grow my network.

“In the long run, I’d like to bring more women into the industry, and especially within Demex because demolition is such a specialised thing and people don’t know enough about it.”

She has found that ,with her own role as project manager, being a woman in a leadership position is important to show that it is an achievable goal to others who may consider it to be too difficult or intimidating.

Women in Industry

“The majority of the women that work in our company are in HR, marketing or accounts – I’m the only one that actually works on our project team and we have one other woman who works in operations,” Rowlands says.

“To find women in the field and in a project space is few and far between. It’d be good to be able to promote it and try and get some interest in it. There are challenges for women trying to get into a male-dominated industry, so having that support network of women that are doing it and have been there can help motivate those women who want to give it a try.”

Education is key, she says – whether

that’s at the school age and university level, or older people looking for a career change.

“We’ve recently done a couple of open days for uni students to showcase that we have graduate and cadet positions, and having a woman on the stand does mean more women will come and speak to us, so I think that’s been really positive and something we want to do more of,” she says.

“Anyone can get into the industry at any point if they have the interest. It’s about wanting to bring women into the industry, promote other women working within it and showcase what we are doing.”

Leaky pipeline

It isn’t just important to attract more women into the industry – more needs to be done to support women at all stages of their career in order to improve employee retention

‘The leaky pipeline’ in our headline refers to the gradual loss of women in the construction industry throughout the lifespan of their careers, starting at high school and continuing through to late career.

At the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) a strategy was created to improve the attraction, retention and growth of these women and to show industry and government how they can support this vision. By collaborating with our volunteers, members, industry partners and government, we focus on addressing the needs of women, advocating for their rights and workplace safety and fostering a culture of inclusivity within the construction industry.

At NAWIC, our vision is 25 per cent female participation by 2025. Although it poses a significant challenge, especially as we are currently sitting at 12 per cent, we know that it is essential to address these ‘leaks’ at every stage of the pipeline to ensure sustained growth. Our strategic interventions across the career lifecycle cover several areas:

Early career

At the early career level, we advocate the cause of safe workplaces for women, which includes safety in terms of gender identity, sexual wellbeing, psychological safety and physical wellbeing.

We support the Construction Industry Culture Taskforce, which identifies key challenges in the industry that can be addressed, such as: long working hours, lack of diversity and wellbeing of workers –both male and female.

Through our mentor and mentee programs, networking within our state chapters and other events, NAWIC encourages connection, collaboration and ‘buddy systems’ where early career-aged women

are provided with education and empowerment to feel safe at work and have mentors to connect with when they are in need of support.

All NAWIC Members have access to our employee assistance program that provides 24/7 confidential and professional support. We advocate loudly for basic necessities such as female onsite amenities and changing rooms, alongside nationwide issues such as the gender pay gap.

Parenthood

NAWIC supports the idea that empowering working parents is critical to retaining women in the construction industry. Offering choices like portable parental and long service leave, job-sharing, part-time and working from home (WFH) options is an excellent starting point. However, additional measures can be taken, such as aligning onsite hours with childcare schedules, fostering a culture that celebrates and shares family milestones and ensuring that being a primary carer for sick children is not perceived as detrimental to a woman’s career.

The NAWIC ethos of ‘You can be what you can see’ reminds us that

change happens from the top, so if we look to our leaders for sharing their own parenting journeys, WFH flexibility and family-friendly practices, this can be a beacon for change. Not to mention that research shows an increase in productivity, growth and profits comes from supporting employees in their work/life balance.

Mid-career

Providing women with equitable remuneration is key to retaining women in the industry. The gender pay gap is an important place to start.

In 2023, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) calculated that the gender pay gap was 21.7 per cent, meaning that women in Australia are earning, on average, $26,393 less than men for equal roles. Maybe now individuals will understand why women are so passionately advocating for equal pay.

Research by the Australian Institute Centre for Future Work found that women generally retired with $136,000 less super than men. Change has never been so important. NAWIC proudly supports WGEA and its actions to create change.

Late career

Implementing board quotas for women is imperative to drive cultural change in the construction industry. Women on boards contribute a genuine diversity of perspectives and lived experiences, as well as fostering an increase in ethical and social compliance.

Additionally, their presence brings a passionate approach to navigating challenging situations with empathy and emotional maturity. Research shows that companies that have female directors are more successful than those without.

Women in leadership positions inspire future generations, demonstrating that women can hold board seats and leadership roles. This also paves the way for mentorship opportunities, the inclusion of more women on boards and the implementation of HR policies supporting women, families and flexible workplace initiatives.

More needs to be done at all stages of women’s careers to improve equality within the workplace.

Supply and demand

Climate reporting standards are being changed to require large Australian entities to disclose climate-related financial information. This means lowemission and carbon neutral materials and processes will grow in importance as businesses look to increase their sustainability.

Keep it simple

Wilmot’s Rough and Tumbled owner Jason Wilmot couldn’t be happier with the pair of YX636C wheel loaders that he bought from Olympus Loaders, saying that he particularly likes that there “isn’t too much computer stuff in them”.

“Sometimes loaders can be too overcomplicated mechanically,” he says.

“With Olympus you can see and feel everything and you don’t have alarms going off. I’m pretty old school in that sense. With these loaders, you check your oil and water and away

you go. They’re very easy to use and maintain and just keep going all day.”

The loaders work out of Rough and Tumbled’s landscaping yard in The Summit, a small town in the Southern Downs region on the Queensland/ NSW border, where Wilmot supplies a range of sand and stone products up and down the east coast alongside a house removal business.

“We’ve been doing this for around 10 years now,” he says.

“We mainly supply stone for aggregates, but landscapers also use our products for all landscaping

applications – mulch, sand, soil and decorative stone.

“I’m a country boy and grew up being able to drive every bit of gear. With the house removals side we’re running a fleet of trucks and bulldozers. When I met my wife, Natalie, we decided to do our own thing and set up the stone and soil business.”

version bringing an increase in lifting capacity of 500kg and a change to a 150 horsepower (111.8kW) Cummins engine. The wheels were also widened from 17.5/25 inches to 20.5/25 inches and the wheelbase extended to provide a greater breakout force and improved traction.

Wilmot bought his first YX636 four years ago and says he decided to try out an Olympus machine as he was looking for something that provided value for money.

Since then he has upgraded from another brand’s loader to bring a second YX636 into the yard as he was pleased with how multi-purpose the machines were.

“It’s used a bit for everything,” he says.

“That’s one thing that I like about it

– I can take the quick hitch off and put forks on it and do what I need to, so it’s very multiskilled. I like that they’re not overcomplicated and are very reliable.”

Wilmot also praises the high level of customer service he has received over the years from Olympus Loaders, particularly when other brands were struggling to source replacement parts during COVID-19.

“They’ve been amazing. I’ll call a mobile and get Simon [Collins] direct or Josh his head mechanic and they’ll be straight over,” he says.

“During Covid, with my trucks I was being told that it’d be six months or more to get a new part shipped in from overseas, but I never had that trouble with Olympus.

“Servicing is done around me as

well. With us running a landscaping yard we’re very busy in the morning, so they’ll come in the afternoon when we have some downtime.”

With plans for a second yard underway, Wilmot says that he is looking at expanding his Olympus fleet even further with a couple of small three-tonne loaders for loading utes and other small-scale applications.

“We’re very happy with Olympus and I highly recommend their machines,” he adds.

With a specialised lung health screening mobile clinic offering health checks to former resource workers in Queensland, Earthmovers & Excavators caught up with Heart of Australia to discuss the lifesaving work being carried out, all in two trailers pulled by a DAF prime mover

The latest stop for Heart of Australia’s newest truck, Heart 5, was Cairns last month where former and retired resources workers were offered the chance to have a lung health check, which specifically targets diseases caused by dust inhalation, such as silicosis or pneumoconiosis (black lung).

Heart 5 is one of five mobile health clinics that operate across Queensland, offering various specialist services to regional and remote communities that would otherwise struggle to access this level of healthcare.

Heart of Australia

First begun back in 2014, Heart of Australia is the brainchild of Dr Rolf Gomes – a cardiologist who saw firsthand the challenges facing those living in rural areas when trying to access health services. With a medical appointment sometimes requiring hours of travel, this creates a significant barrier to effectively screening and diagnosing diseases early.

The solution was to take everything from a static clinic and transfer it into the back of a truck. Heart 1 was the result, followed by a series of trucks servicing various routes across Queensland.

Heart of Australia program lead Andrew Baillie says the concept of mobile health works well in environments that have a large geographic dispersion and very low population density – bringing the service to the community rather than imposing the burden of time and distance on people needing medical appointments.

“Communities have found this to be a very innovative service, as we can offer something in these very remote areas that is akin to what you would get in an urban area,” he says.

“It’s also a life-saving service for individuals that might not otherwise have had these tests done, due to them having to possibly spend a night or two away from home or the farm. Having a health clinic that comes into town on their doorstep removes that barrier to access.

Heart 5

With the latest truck, Heart 5, specifically designed to screen for lung disease, this is where the Heart of Australia service is especially relevant to current and former resource sector workers where dust inhalation can lead to scarring of the lung tissue but remain unnoticed for years.

Heart 5’s two trailers are pulled by a 2022 DAF XF 530 prime mover, with a combined weight of 56 tonnes. The trailers contain a host of clinical services, including lung examination, cardiology and exercise tests and an audiometer for hearing tests. All Heart of Australia trailers are built in Brisbane by Varley Group.

Baillie works within the Heart of Australia Corporate Health Initiative (HOACHI), which focuses on occupational health and safety, and says that HOACHI’s work covers two aspects: prevention and disease detection.

“Heart 5 was co-funded by Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ), which oversees health surveillance activities across the Queensland resources sector,” he says.

“So that truck was designed specifically for comprehensive respiratory screening services. The program that we were offering in Cairns falls under an arrangement that we have with RSHQ to perform screening for retired and former

resource sector workers. So that will be coal miners, mineral miners and quarry workers.

“There are certain eligibility criteria for people to participate in that program. An individual would have to be a coal mine, mineral mine or quarry worker for at least three years in total in their lifetime, with at least six months of that work experience in Queensland. They will have since have had to have permanently stopped working in the resources industry and have had at least five years since a previous assessment.

“If they fall under those eligibility criteria, they need to contact the Mine Dust Health Support Service to register for an appointment.*”

The two trailers making up Heart 5 contain a whole sequence of tests to conduct a thorough investigation of a patient’s lung health, including an ILO chest x-ray, specifically designed for dust exposed workers and a respiratory function test. An experienced occupational medical officer then undertakes a consultation to discuss any findings.

“Patients pass through the different zones for each test and the whole thing takes around about 45 minutes to an hour,” Baillie says.

“For anyone that has abnormalities identified in that baseline screening,

we also have a CT scanner, which is the world’s first battery operated mobile CT scanner. This produces a high-resolution 3D image of the lungs.

“We can also do complex lung function studies on the truck, which is a diffusion test of the lungs to test the diffusing capacity of oxygen and carbon dioxide. So it’s pretty much as comprehensive as you can get for a for a respiratory screening program.

“We also have a team of supervising doctors that are all experienced in the delivery of occupational respiratory medicals, particularly with regards to dust exposed workers, and they review and adjudicate results. If anybody needs further adjudication, we have a team of respiratory physicians that will perform telephone consultations with those patients that might have abnormalities.”

Catching disease early

Baillie says the aim is to first identify if respiratory disease is present and, if it is, to determine if that disease is related to occupational history, or another contributor such as a smoking habit. The complicating factor with dust exposure diseases, he says, is that they can manifest in different ways and remain undetected for many years.

“It is important that we are able to do these diagnostic tests and pick up early warning signs of lung diseases as early as possible, because often the patient may go for a number of years without realising that their lung capacity is slowly degrading,” he says.

“It might not be until they’re quite breathless that they get it checked out and, by then, the disease is onset and can be more difficult to treat.

“We’ve screened around about 1,000 retired resources sector workers over two years and found otherwise undetected cases of silicosis, black lung and other significant respiratory diseases. Therefore, there is high utility in former resource workers taking part in a screening service, even if it is just for peace of mind. The earlier they get checked the better.”

Competing cost pressures

With inflation, increased pressure on states to provide funding, an overburdened infrastructure pipeline and decreased productivity, we need clarity on federal government funding

We are slowly starting to receive more information from the government that reveals the true state of infrastructure delivery in Australia.

For those who are involved with government, either state or federal, it can often be the case that to get any clear bearing on an issue, it is out of your hands – and it takes quite some time for anything to make sense.

Thankfully some very talented public servants are working hard to get the best from an evolving policy.

As I write this, we still have no outcome of the 60-day review into the infrastructure of the Olympic games. We do, however, have an executive summary of the 90-day report into infrastructure spending.

Headlines focused on projects that were cut or delayed and their dollar value. But while cuts and delays are unacceptable, the real headline is the establishment of the federal infrastructure funding commitment.

On the surface the reaffirming of the $120 billion pipeline over 10 years looks impressive, but it does not address the inflationary impacts on the delivery of infrastructure and the parallel productivity decline in delivering infrastructure.

The federal review established that spending will be capped at $12 billion per year. There is no allowance for inflation. Year on year each dollar will deliver less infrastructure.

Recommendation 6 of the 90-day review is that federal funding should be funded 50/50 between the federal government and individual states.

This means states will need to find an additional 30 per cent for joint funded projects, which were previously an 80/20 split.

We can’t lose sight of the fact that when the Morrison government set the $120 billion 10-year pipeline it was prior to the hyperinflation emanating from the policies and environment of the post-COVID-19 era.

For our industry, the Road and Bridge Construction Index was approximately six per cent over the last calendar year.

Regardless of headline inflation trending towards the RBA target of below three per cent, it is expected that there will be a lag before we see parity in construction inflation.

This will be driven by demand over supply from the significant pipeline of renewable infrastructure over and above business as usual.

restriction on funding is setting up a greater cost of delivery crisis for infrastructure.

The elephant in the room is the lack of growth, or rather a decline in productivity in our sector.

Government policy at both federal and state levels has seen productivity declines in excess of 30 per cent.

This, coupled with inflationary pressure driven by demand exceeding supply, means any cap in spending will have a disastrous effect on the delivery of infrastructure.

To meet current cost overruns, the future cost of infrastructure and declining productivity, states must provide funding they can’t afford.

If we take Queensland as an example, the top competing contenders for state funding are the Olympic Games, transport, health, crime, renewable energy, education, maintenance and disaster recovery.

Coal prices have dropped, as has sugar, hit by coal royalties.

The population is increasing, state revenue is limited and the federal government is not only capping infrastructure funding but also requiring the state add another 30 per cent to projects that would otherwise only require 20 per cent.

It does not help that commitments such as a million homes by 2046 or 70 per cent renewable energy by 2032 are being rolled out on top of the current problem.

While 95 per cent of new housing and some of the renewable energy infrastructure will be delivered by the private sector, matching public infrastructure will be required. I doubt if Queensland, any other state, or the federal government has the appetite for more debt.

The Queensland Government’s own website boasts a $62 Billion Queensland Energy Jobs Plan.

Something has got to give.

It is time for governments to be truthful to the public about the funding pressures so sensible decisions can be made about what can be funded and how it can be funded.

Haver & Boecker Niagara has engineered the world’s largest grizzly screen for a Brazilian iron ore operation

Canada’s Haver & Boecker Niagara has custom-engineered the largest vibrating grizzly screen in the world.

Manufactured with Hardox steel perforated plates and grizzly bars for work with a long-term customer at a Brazilian iron ore operation, the Niagara XL-Class vibrating grizzly screen boasts a capacity of 8,000tph (7,257 tonnes per hour) and a cut size of 200mm.

As the largest exciter-driven machine in the industry, the XLClass provides operation with high-capacity screening while maximising uptime and production, Haver & Boecker says.

The grizzly screen removes large stones, relieving pressure on the primary crusher.

“We have worked with this customer for many years, but as they began production at what is the largest iron ore operation in the world, we realised to truly maximise output, it would require a durable and extremely efficient primary screen,” Haver & Boecker Niagara sales manager Denilson Moreno says.

“That’s what led us to engineer and manufacture this XL-Class.”

At 120 tons (109 tonnes), the machine’s size required a modular approach so it was engineered as two bodies, the company says.

Major works

Boral has commenced work on the Coffs Harbour bypass project

Boral Limited has been engaged on a massive flexible pavement project in NSW – the Coffs Harbour bypass –which will see the construction materials company supply, deliver and lay 280 kilotonnes of asphalt on the $2.2 billion infrastructure project.

Flexible pavement, comprising multiple layers of material that allows for traffic load to be distributed and ‘bend’ the asphalt, creates more durability. Initial activity has commenced, with Boral set to start the majority of asphalt work mid-year.

The Australian and NSW governments are funding the Coffs Harbour bypass project, which includes the construction of three tunnels, 12km of new road and about 2km of upgraded highway. It is set to be open to traffic in late 2026 and completed by 2027.

While roads in NSW have traditionally used rigid concrete, Boral will deliver flexible pavement using EME asphalt, an Australiandeveloped, French product first pioneered by Boral nearly a decade ago. EME enables a thinner layer of the ultra-hard, high-flexing-resistant asphalt to be used, making it a more sustainable product. It also has five-to10 times the lifespan of using regular asphalt.

“We are pleased to be involved in the delivery of the Coffs Harbour bypass, a significant infrastructure project that will better connect our major cities and ease congestion in the area,” says Boral executive general manager, asphalt Tim Richards.

“At Boral, we are committed to supporting regional growth and creating more employment opportunities for local residents.

“We have a proven track record in delivering large-scale projects and being an innovative company; the flexible pavement design with EME asphalt mix being just one example. We are excited to be working with Transport for NSW, and proud to deliver one of the largest flexible pavement projects in the state.”

The Coffs Harbour bypass is a joint venture between global engineering, property and infrastructure company Gamuda Australia and leading engineering and construction company Ferrovial, which will deliver the major package of work. Boral has been engaged as part of this.

Smart sensors

Newly developed smart sensors that detect stresses and strains in bridge concrete are to be tested in NSW this year

A NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN) project has developed smart fibre optic sensors that can monitor corrosion in concrete structures and help extend the service life of a bridge.

Dr Ali Hadigheh says the highperformance fibre optics are costeffective and can check for strain, cracks and corrosion in reinforced concrete bridges.

“There are many bridges in Australia that are exposed to harsh conditions such as salty water and temperature fluctuations which, in some cases, can lead to severe deterioration,” he says.

“Increasing traffic load, rising sea levels and increased atmospheric CO2 due to climate change are all exacerbating structural deterioration, highlighting the need for continuous health monitoring of bridges.”

Hadigheh says early detection of steel corrosion in reinforced concrete structures can enable early, efficient and cost-effective interventions.

“Our sensing technology and machine learning models enable accurate and early detection of defects in reinforced concrete bridges using only a single fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) sensor, reducing the cost and simplifying the data analysis process,” he says.

“A FBG is like a tiny mirror inside an optical fibre that reflects only a

specific wavelength of light. It can be used to measure strain, temperature, or pressure in structures like bridges or pipelines by detecting changes in the wavelength of light reflected.”

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) senior bridge engineer Dr Hamid Fatemi says TfNSW will test the sensors in a real-world application.

“TfNSW is hoping to trial the NSSN’s technology this year through a realtime corrosion data acquisition system on the Yamba Road bridge, which spans the Oyster Channel in northern NSW,” Fatemi says.

“When the bridge next undergoes maintenance work, we’re aiming to install fibre optics in the reinstated concrete to collect raw data from the corrosion state of the structure for artificial intelligence analysis, via machine learning, such as reinforcement steel corrosion potential.

“The outcome of this testing could be used to develop future Building Information Models and create future 3D digital replicas (digital twins) of existing bridges and structures in our transport network – using the AI technology to display corrosion or structural conditions in the real time –as and when it occurs.”

WA has released a new tendering dashboard to help construction companies pitch for work

The WA government has launched a new online dashboard featuring $8.7 billion worth of public works to assist Western Australia’s construction industry plan and prepare to bid for government tenders

The Pipeline of Works interactive dashboard features current and planned non-residential building and other infrastructure projects.

The dashboard, in conjunction with the State Infrastructure Plan and State Budget Papers, increases transparency around infrastructure spending and provides updated forecasts and data to attract new entrants to WA’s building market and encourage increased competition and innovation, the WA government says.

“Our government’s record $43.9 billion Asset Investment Program is setting up our state for the future, and importantly, providing massive opportunities for local construction businesses and workers,” WA treasurer Rita Saffioti says.

“This dashboard will be a key tool in helping these local companies to plan ahead, prepare and bid for potential jobs and make adjustments to their business as required, like increasing their workforce, to deliver these vital projects.”

Programs of works, ICT-related projects and METRONET and other Transport-related projects continue to be available from other state government agency websites and publications.

South Australia has been named the nation’s top performing economy, ranking first in construction work and dwelling starts

Achieving a historic milestone, it is the first time SA has been named the nation’s top performing economy, according to CommSec’s quarterly State of the States report.

Ranking number one in four out of eight key economic indicators, SA rose above the other states and territories –largely due to its strong construction activity and jobs growth.

Specifically, SA beat its Australian counterparts in economic growth, unemployment, construction work and dwelling starts.

“South Australia is now in the top spot for construction work done, up from third. Construction work done is 23.4 per cent above its decade average, ahead of NSW (18.3 per cent above the decade average),” CommSec states in its report.

“Population growth in South Australia has tripled over the past two years, which is showing up in a strong housing market and overall economic activity.”

SA had the highest economic growth rate among states, soaring by 3.8 per cent, while its unemployment rate of 3.6 per cent is a record low.

In the 15-year history of Commsec’s quarterly State of the States report, SA had never ranked number one up until now.

Executive director, residential project delivery and assets at Renewal SA Shane Wingard says the amount of construction work and new builds commencing in the state is pleasing and that Renewal SA is committed to continuing to deliver a pipeline of opportunities for industry.

“This is an exciting time in South Australia as it firmly positions itself as the best place in Australia to live, work and invest,” he says.

Comfort and experience

Both machines are equipped

with a rear-view camera that is integrated into the LCD digital display, so the operator is offered an on-demand rear view when travelling in reverse or with the push of a button – enhancing job site awareness and safety.

Further enhancing visibility, both the track loader and skid steer loader feature LED lights on the front and back of the machine to make operation easier in lowlight conditions.

The TL750 and the SL750 also provide a standard self-levelling feature that automatically keeps the bucket or attachment in a horizontal plane when lifting.

Activating this feature will reduce fatigue when handling materials

because the operator no longer needs to worry about manually adjusting the machine, Kioti says.

Power and performance

Utilising a 74hp (56kW) Kioti diesel engine, both models deliver consistent power and reliability, Kioti says.

Compact choice

Yanmar Compact Equipment (Yanmar CE) has seen its first compact track loader production models off the line for the North American market – the TL100VS.

The TL100VS model is the first produced machine of Yanmar’s new line of compact track loaders, which also includes the TL65RS, TL75VS and TL80VS.

Boasting a 103.5hp (76kW) engine, the TL100VS is the perfect partner for midsize to heavy-duty projects, the company says.

Yanmar’s expansion of its compact equipment offering comes after the company acquired a USbased manufacturing facility and engineering team focused on compact track loaders.

The company announced extensive research and development occurred over four years, with an aim of eventually seeing these machines roll off the production line.

“It’s immensely satisfying to see these first machines roll off the line,” Yanmar CE commercial vice president Matt Deloglos says.

“Our team has worked tirelessly towards this goal for the last four years with designing, testing and manufacturing these machines as well as getting the plant and our team ready to launch these products.”

With the TL100VS off the production line, the remaining three new Yanmar compact track loaders are set to start production later in 2024..

Take two

Hitachi releases two Zaxis-7 compact excavators in Europe

Hitachi has released the ZX95US-7 and ZX95USB-7 excavators, which it says are more powerful and offer 10 per cent greater stability and four per cent greater digging force compared to the ZX85-6 model.

Lifecycle costs are reduced with the new Stage V-compliant engine, which does not require a selective catalytic reduction system, Hitachi says. This eliminates the need for urea, filter replacements and associated maintenance. The all-new ECO gauge also allows operators to control fuel efficiency and reduce costs.

Attachments are quickly changed using the enhanced attachment support system on the LCD monitor and the factory-ready quick hitch system, including piping.

Grading and levelling can be completed quickly and easily thanks to the optional floating angle blade, Hitachi adds.

and a wide entrance, improved pedal layout and more legroom.

The Aerial Angle camera system provides a 270-degree bird’s-eye view, and operators can choose from six image options to view the machine’s immediate environment.

Remote monitoring systems

Owner’s Site and ConSite send operational data daily via GPRS or satellite from the excavator to Global e-Service. In addition, ConSite summarises the information in a monthly email and the ConSite Pocket app shows real-time alerts for any potential issues.

Hitachi has also applied continuous monitoring of engine and hydraulic oil. Data is transmitted daily via two oil sensors to Global e-Service and they detect if the oil quality has deteriorated.

Rolling into town

The Wirtgen Group will debut a compact milling machine and roller at a US show this month

Wirtgen, a John Deere company, is set to unveil its new W 150 Fi compact milling machine at the World of Asphalt Exhibition in Tennessee, from March 25–27.

With a milling width of up to 6ft (1.8m), the construction equipment company says the new machine is suitable for use on major construction projects with restricted space – such as inner-city locations.

Using John Deere’s engine technology as well as its digital assistance and leveling systems, the new machine delivers higher milling performance with lower fuel consumption, the company says.

Wirtgen will also show a new articulated tandem roller at the event – the HD+ 120i VIO-2 HF from subsidiary Hamm. The model is equipped with two maintenancefree VIO drums that can work with a choice of either vibration or oscillation.

A battery powered electric tandem roller will also be on show, along with demonstrations of the John Deere operations centre – a central platform for digital machine control and optimisation solutions.

The Black Dog Institute, which researches better ways for Australians to manage their mental health, has launched its Mullets for Mental Health fundraising drive for 2024

The month of April will be dedicated to the curation of the perfect mullet, all in the name of funding mental health research.

Suicide is the leading cause of death for men aged 18-44 in Australia.

A survey undertaken by the Black Dog Institute of construction workers found that one in four had high symptoms of depression and/ or anxiety.

Challenges within construction include having unclear or conflicting work responsibilities and having limited control over how workers do their job.

“When a worker’s role is ambiguous, or conflicts with another work role they have, it adds considerable complexity and mental strain to their daily work life,” Black Dog Institute postdoctoral research fellow Dr Andrew Arena says.

“Also, when a worker doesn’t feel like they have control over how they work and the decisions that affect them, they’re likely to feel unmotivated and depleted. Over time, these challenges can contribute

to stress, burnout, and mental illhealth – especially when coupled with the high job demands of the construction industry.”

The survey also found that 25 per cent of workers who needed mental health support never accessed it.

Funds raised will go towards training community presenters, supporting development of the myNewWay app for people living with anxiety and/or depression, funding research programs and supporting the development of tools to help those suffering from poor mental health.

Racing return

Komatsu has signed a multi-year deal with Williams Racing to become the principal partner of the British team from the start of the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship (F1) season.

Safe Work Australia has developed interactive guide aims to change the culture around Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)

Safe Work Australia has developed a new SWMS interactive guide with information on the true purpose of a SWMS, when it is required and how to use it.

When conducting activities that have the potential to cause serious injury or death, a workplace must prepare a SWMS before work begins, but Safe Work Australia has found that they are often not being used as intended.

In a review into the effectiveness of these method statements, Safe Work Australia says many workplaces see the SWMS as unnecessary paperwork rather than a key step in managing the risks of hazardous work.

Subsequently, this new interactive guide has been introduced to change the culture around the SWMS ensuring PCBUs (a person conducting a business or undertaking) genuinely consider hazards and risks.

The interactive guide will also include case studies, simple examples of control measures for various high risk construction work activities and a toolkit with jurisdictional resources.

The toolkit will be useful for small businesses that prepare their own SWMS and people new to the industry, Safe Work Australia says.

Metro milestone

The first new Melbourne Metro Tunnel station has finished construction and is ready for testing

Arden Station, the first of five new stations making up the Metro Tunnel, is now complete ahead of the rail line opening set for 2025.

The new station has been built in North Melbourne, 2km west of Melbourne CBD, and includes platform screen doors in a first for Victoria. The Metro Tunnel will run from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east of the city.

Since construction on Arden Station began in 2018, 330,000 tonnes of rock and soil have been excavated, 3,000 lights installed and 104,000 locally manufactured bricks laid.

“The Metro Tunnel will save commuters hours every week and change the city forever,” Victorian premier Jacinta Allan says.

“I thank and congratulate the thousands of workers who have been employed on this site since the beginning, and the many thousands more who are building rail lines and roads right across Melbourne and regional Victoria.”

The project and new Metro trains will shorten travel times for commuters and make room for an extra 121,000 peak-hour passengers every week – an increase of 45 per cent, the state government says.

Amendments have been introduced removing the minimum lot size requirements for granny flats in WA

Following recent news that Victoria has removed the need for a planning permit for granny flats in the state, the WA state government has also introduced relaxed amendments to Residential Design Codes (R-Codes) that will extend exemptions for compliant ancillary dwellings. Compliant granny flats on residential lots of any size in Western Australia will no longer require approval.

Previously, a minimum lot size of 350 square metres was required for an ancillary dwelling or granny flat. However, where a granny flat meets the deemed-to-comply provisions of the R-Codes, it may be exempt from development approval.

Any granny flat will need to meet setback requirements and must not exceed 70 square metres.

In addition to the removal of the minimum lot size, changes made under the SPP 7.3 Residential Design Codes (Part C Medium Density provisions) in most cases mean an ancillary dwelling will not be required to provide a parking bay, except for ancillary dwellings in some densities,nd proposed in locations where a car is more likely

The changes made under the R-Codes in relation to parking have been designed to allow for greater flexibility when considering parking requirements and reduce the extent of covered parking on-site, thereby opening up more of the lot.

The amended State Planning Policy 7.3 will be released in midMarch 2024 and will become operational by mid-April 2024.

“By removing the minimum lot size for compliant ancillary dwellings, and allowing grouped dwellings to have ancillary dwellings, the Cook government is further streamlining planning processes and cutting unnecessary red tape to open up more opportunities for new housing,” WA planning minister John Carey says.

“A minimum lot size will no longer apply, extending the existing exemption across more residential properties and opening the option of establishing a granny flat for more Western Australians.”

“This model not only comes in at an attractive price point, but it was also designed to perform and deliver the same durability and power customers expect from a John Deere machine,” global product manager Drew Miller says.

While offering a competitive price point and similar productivity as other models in its size class, the 444 G-Tier wheel loader can be equipped with optional high-lift, expanding the reach of the machine.

The optional debris package comes equipped with a centrifugal precleaner and an auto reversing fan, which helps to reduce downtime by enabling the operator to stay up and running on the job without pausing to remove job site debris.

The Volvo EW240 electric material handler is the latest addition to its range of zero exhaust emission machines

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has introduced the grid-connected EW240 in Europe as it works towards a carbon-neutral future.

Creating a more comfortable work environment, the new electric material handler delivers a significant reduction in noise, vibration and heat as well as having zero exhaust fumes.

The near-silent EW240 has a continuous cable connection, being able to work around the clock without any need to stop for recharging – making it the perfect partner for indoor use or in waste and recycling applications, Volvo CE says in a statement.

With zero-emissions and nearsilent silent operation, it is suited for noise sensitive areas, outdoors or even indoors, low carbon zones and for working during unsociable hours.

“The EW240 electric material handler is the ideal hard-working

sustainable solution for waste and recycling – an industry where circularity is in close focus,” Volvo CE SAS commercial project manager Thomas Nather says.

“By providing near silent and zero emission electric solutions, we are supporting our customers need to work more sustainably and deliver on their transformation journey as well as lower the cost of their operations.”

As an electric machine, the new material handler can go longer between services without needing to stop work to refuel or recharge –meaning lower maintenance costs compared to a diesel machine as well as higher productivity.

Comfort is also provided to the operator as the new machine comes with a heated and suspended seat, a flat machine hood – which makes visibility greater, a rear and side view camera as well as LED lights.

Workplace exposure standards for welding fumes are being strengthened – these tips can help you meet them

Ministers across Australia will strengthen workplace exposure standards (WES) for welding fumes, creating a new statutory maximum upper limit for the concentration of total welding fumes within a worker’s breathing zone when legislated in each jurisdiction.

The new WES for welding fumes not otherwise controlled by the standards is a time-weighted average of 1 milligram per cubic metre – cut from the previous average of 5 milligrams per cubic metre – over an eight-hour working day in a ve-day week.

Safe Work Australia says welding fumes are a complex mix of hazardous chemicals, which can result in occupational lung diseases – including lung cancer – among people who are exposed to them.

With the changes set to be implemented, employers and other people carrying out a business or undertaking (PCBUs) will need to either eliminate or minimise the risks to worker safety that these fumes pose.

To do this, Safe Work Australia recommends that PCBUs identify the hazardous components in the welding fumes at their workplaces, either from the safety data sheets from welding rods used or air monitoring data.

It also suggests PCBUs assess work processes and the work environment, consulting with workers and reviewing any incident reports to nd other ways to reduce the risk of exposure to fumes.

Local exhaust ventilation systems may help employers meet the new workplace exposure standards for welding fumes.

Weld Australia recommends the introduction of at-source fume controls method, such as local exhaust ventilation systems like a hooded fume extractor or on-gun fume extraction – with any captured fumes to be ltered and exhausted into atmosphere, preferably outside the workshop.

Weld Australia also suggests personal respiratory protection such as powered air purifying respirators or air-fed helmets for welders, particularly where the welder’s head is likely to be near the weld plume.

Seeking specialist advice about workshop ventilation from an occupational hygienist, or another form of fume exposure monitoring will also assist, Weld Australia says.

The group is currently developing new online safety training courses for welders, welding engineers and supervisors that is due to be released this year, Weld Australia says.

Weld Australia CEO Geo Crittenden says the group is revising its Fume Minimisation Guidelines for Welding, Cutting, Brazing and Soldering, to be released soon.

“Welding can and should be considered a safe occupation; when proper precautions are taken, welders have no cause to fear accident or injury,” he says.

“Safety must be taken seriously in the workplace, to avoid the risk of long-term impacts.”

The roll-out of lithium-ion battery forklifts is speeding ahead in China, but less so throughout the rest of Asia, according to a new report

Sales of new lithium-ion battery powered forklifts will overtake those of lead-acid batteries by 2030 worldwide, according to a report from a UK-based market research group.

Maya Xiao, the group’s lead analyst for Liion battery and forklift research, predicts lithium battery-powered forklifts will become the top seller in China and parts of Europe by 2025, with Class 3.1 forklifts leading the way.

“By 2030, the global market share of lithium-ion models will exceed 50 per cent in all classes, and Class 3.1 will become the first forklift type to achieve over 50 per cent lithium-ion rate,” the report says.

Xiao also predicts that all Class 3.1 forklifts will be lithium electrified before 2032.

Along with China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom will see the proportion of lithium-ion/ electric vehicle models sold exceed 50 per cent by next year, and by 2026 for the rest of Europe.

Xiao writes that the rapid pace of change in both regions is driven by their respective focuses on shifting to the new technology – with lithium-ion powered forklifts already popular in those places.

At the same time, the volume of lithiumion forklifts in Africa is expected to reach 50 per cent by 2029, primarily due to the dependence of the region’s market on imported forklifts from China.

More than half of all new Class 1 forklifts sold by 2030 will be lithium-ion models, Xiao predicts, except for Japan and South Korea, where local manufacturers dominate the market and have responded more slowly with lithiumion electric vehicle models.

For Japan, South Korea and the rest of Asia, Xiao predicts that it will not be until after 2030 that most forklifts sold new have lithium batteries.
