Daily grind

The new Tigercat 6900 grinder is the first regular production offering in Tigercat’s material processing category, developed for high throughput material reduction and mulch production.

Fully designed and built by Tigercat, the 6900 is a heavy-duty grinder built with an upswing rotor and large infeed opening with outward wing walls, built to maximise processing capacity.

The grinder’s upper frame pivots on the undercarriage, allowing the operator to adjust the infeed angle or discharge height for different material lengths.

The adjustable angle eliminates the need for outriggers, while the pivoting upper frame allows transport on a 46cm (18 in) lowboy trailer without the need to fold the discharge conveyor.

The machine has remote control functions for simple operation and mobility on site, along with an easy-to-use 25cm (10 in) display screen for machine monitoring and function adjustment.

Maintenance is made easy with convenient service access. The split hog box opens over centre to fully access the rotor and screens, while the anvil and screens are hydraulically retractable.

The single discharge conveyor is open on the bottom for clean operation and easy servicing. A tool storage area is mounted on the side of the machine that

hydraulically raises and lowers for added convenience.

An optional large diameter magnetic head pulley is available to effectively remove metal from the end product. The machine is also prepared to accept overband magnet systems.

“All 41 of the 930Es on site are now in the process of being upgraded to fully autonomous operation, at the rate of four a month,” Povah says.

Komatsu Australia chief executive Sean Taylor says the autonomous technology will have many benefits across the industry.

A fleet of Komatsu mining trucks are being converted into autonomous operation and put to work in the Pilbara.

The Komatsu 930E trucks started being used at BHP’s South Flank iron ore mine in June, following approval from the mining giant in January.

In total, 41 930E trucks will transition to autonomous haulage across five Autonomous Operation Zones (AOZs) – with the process expected to be completed by September 2023.

The fleet will be controlled from a

purpose-built control facility at the South Flank site.

South Flank, which cost US$3.6 billion to create, is just one of many mines across Western Australia and Queensland, which will deploy Komatsu’s autonomous haul trucks.

Across the country, Komatsu is on track to have over 430 autonomous trucks operating by the end of the 2022 calendar year.

Stung into action

The new Claas Scorpion range, developed with Liebherr, has undergone a comprehensive braking overhaul and boasts an updated air-conditioning system

Agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas is set to bring its new versatile telehandler range to Australia.

In all, six models make up Claas’s Scorpion range of telehandlers, which have received a comprehensive facelift, in addition to the improvements made for operator comfort.

Built in co-operation with Liebherr, each model in the Scorpion range is powered by four-cylinder Deutz engines including the new 3.6 I Stage V engine in the 732, 736, 741 and 746 models, which has been optimised for greater efficiency and performance.

The new engines results in 50Nm more torque than previous models and give each model an additional six horsepower (4.4kW) in power output.

The Scorpion 741, 735 and 732 models have also been fitted with Claas’ hydrostatic Varipower 2 drive from the Claas Jaguar forage harvester.

“The compact drive unit with its highly efficient, high-torque twin motor ensures a long service life, further improved drive efficiency and a lower noise level on the road,” Claas says about the Varipower 2 drive.

Varipower 2 provides the operator

with three driving ranges – 0 to 20km/h, 0 to 30km/h, and 0 to 40km/h. The ranges can be preselected via a button and work by ensuring the final speed selected is reached at a reduced, fuelsaving engine speed.

A comprehensive overhaul of the Scorpion’s braking behaviour has also been undertaken by Claas, with new brake valves and brake pedals fitted along with new software tuning. An automatic park break is standard as a parking assist for hilly gradients to prevent the machine from moving.

On the larger Scorpion models – the 960 and 746 – an automatic telescopic boom arm retraction system has been fitted for faster loading cycles.

All Scorpion models will also benefit from regenerative working hydraulics, which is decoupled from the engine speed dependent on the joystick deflection to reduce the noise and fuel consumption.

Inside the cab, an updated airconditioning system is new. So too is a new angle and height adjustable steering column with automatic indicator reset for better ergonomics and safety while operating the telehandler.

Having debuted in the North American market, the larger Grip’n’Ride construction tyre range is set to be launched around the world

Tyre manufacturer Mitas has expanded its construction tyre range for wheeled and backhoe loaders.

The Grip’n’Ride construction range are larger than existing products in the Mitas range and deliver improved performance even on softer terrains.

Strengthened sidewalls also offer greater durability when handling increased load capacities while a special tread pattern increases grip and self-cleaning properties.

The range is larger than Mitas’ existing 19.5L – 24 IND tyre and packs almost 1,000kg greater load capacity when stationary and 400kg greater load capacity at speeds of 40km/h.

Mitas says the Grip’n’Ride range has a reduced height to weight ratio when compared to other construction-specific tyres on the market.

Initially, the range will be available to the North American market however it will be available around the globe shortly, according to Trelleborg Wheel Systems construction tyres product manager Marcello Mantovani.

“Initial production of this new tyre will serve the extensive North American market, where it is in high demand,” he says.

“This is due to the high number of backhoe loaders in use, which require wider tyres and greater load capacities.

“Shortly thereafter, we will roll out the new 21L – 24 IND tyre for customers globally.”

The entire Grip’n’Ride range is designed specifically for the rear axles of construction machines.

Porter Hire has added 300 new items of machinery to its range across Australia and New Zealand.

The new machines span a wide range of industries to better meet the increased demand of the civil industries in Australia and New Zealand.

Having already made extensive investment in 2021 to its rental fleet, Porter Hire national manager Paul Kot says he aims to develop the most comprehensive heavy equipment rental service available.

Kot also revealed that in addition to the expansion of the heavy earthmoving fleet, Porter Hire is also expanding its compaction and light earthmoving range.

“We are adding additional Ammann twin drum rollers to include the ARX40 4T roller and new products such as the Ammann ARS50 5T single drum padfoot roller with blade that was recently announced by Ammann,” Kot says.

“With these new machines also comes the latest emission reduction technology – with the majority coming with Stage V engines, which will help our customers meet their carbon reduction targets.”

The addition of the new machines to the rental fleet, all equipped with the latest technologies, represents the business’ biggest investment yet in its hire division.

“The exciting thing is, this our biggest investment yet, even bigger than last year, and continues to show the Group’s confidence in the Australian Hire business,” Kot says.

When purchasing the new machines, Porter Hire says considerable attention was paid to both innovative technologies and emissions reductions, with each unit more efficient and generating significant reductions in fuel burn.

The brand’s taskforce of specialist mechanics, technicians and workshops will be available to provide backup services when required.

With emissions reductions and targets becoming more stringent across the industry, Porter Hire hopes to have equipment suitable for all job sites.

Scope for change

“From a service perspective, it means customers have got one service contact. A lot of the fluids in the machine are the same as their tractors and their sprayers, so it’s just trying to simplify what we offer to our customers in the marketplace.”

Wood says the manufacturer’s priority with the Farmlift 742 was to provide as many features as possible as standard.

These standard features include two and four-wheel steering, crab steering, fourth and fifth hydraulic functions, soft ride control, boom dust control, and what Wood describes as “the largest flotation tyres that are available”.

Another area where Wood believes the Farmlift 742 excels is in its ground clearance.

“My experience with telehandlers in the past has generally been that the bugbear was ground clearance,” he says.

“This machine has excellent ground clearance and it’s very clean underneath.

“The other big issue that I always found with telehandlers in the past was access around the engine bay. It was very difficult, particularly for technicians, and even just to clean them out.

Case IH has made its first foray into telehandlers for the Australian market by launching the Farmlift 742 at the AgQuip field days last month.

With a rated power of 129hp (96kW) at 2,200rpm and a maximum travel speed of 40km/h, the telehandler can lift 4,200kg up to 7m high.

Case IH’s Australia and New Zealand hay and harvest product manager Andrew Wood says the Farmlift is designed to fill a gap in the manufacturer’s offering.

“I think there’s always been a gap in the product line-up in regards to a machine that’s capable of lifting a considerable weight and stacking it at a considerable height,” he says.

“Loaders on tractors are great, but they’re a compromise. They obviously don’t have the height or reach that these machines do, nor did they have the lift capacity in regards of weight.

“From a day-to-day usage perspective in regards to maintenance, it’s really good.”

Wood says the decision to introduce a telehandler for the Australian market was also based on customer feedback over the years.

Early feedback on the machine, which made its debut at AgQuip in Gunnedah, has been “overwhelming” with Wood saying several attendees were “genuinely interested in buying one” based on the show’s first day alone.

“The other thing that everyone seems to be commenting on is just how simply and cleanly the switch gear and the controls in the cab are laid out.

“It’s nice, simple and logical and makes it very easy to use.

“This machine is laid out probably as good as I’ve ever seen on a telehandler.”

Porter Hire adds equipment to build comprehensive heavy equipment rental service

FAE has expanded its range of remote control tracked carriers with the new RCU-75, designed to work on hard-toaccess areas.

The RCU-75 is compact and powerful, FAE says, and can work on steep slopes with an incline of up to 55 degrees thanks to high-tech solutions that are integrated into its design.

It also ideal for other difficult terrains such as hilly woodland areas and near railroad tracks, power lines, gas and oil pipelines, gardens, roadsides and waterways.

The tracked carrier is powered by a Kohler Common Rail electronic fuel injection engine which, while compact and fuel efficient, still produces 74 horsepower (55kW) which FAE says complies with stringent emission standards.

Dual hydrostatic transmission gives the RCU-75 better traction and optional management of the attachment.

Electronically controlled piston pumps and a dedicated electronic control unit further the performance capabilities of the machine.

The machine’s undercarriage features a hydraulic independent track gauge system that can be extended and retracted as required using an automatic tensioning system.

The undercarriage is also supported with high profile rubber tracks that are 13mm wide and have an 86mm pitch, as well as oscillating rollers and tripleflange style idlers that help it operate in tough conditions.

FAE says the RCU-75 can be paired with the BL2/RCU mulcher, which is designed to mulch vegetation up to 6-inches (15cm) in diameter and features a fixed tooth rotor and bite limiter for high productivity.

The RCU-75 will be available in the Australian market in 2023.

Distribution deal

A new range of specialty forestry tyres will be available through Tyres4U from this month after a new deal was signed

Forestry tyre specialist Nokian Tyres’ products are now being distributed in Australia solely through Tyres4U after signing a new deal with the distributor.

The full range of Nokian tyres is now available for purchase through the Tyres4U forestry dealer network.

Nokian says its tyres have been developed in collaboration with machinery manufacturers and tested throughout the Nordic forests where they were designed.

Company specialists are currently training Tyres4U forestry dealers to get them up to speed on the technical requirements, safety and speed of fitment of the new products.

Tyres4U Australian general manager James Dickinson says customers get the best results when they have the right tyre fit and right tyre pressure in place.

“Heavy machinery needs specialised equipment and technical skills to fit forestry tyres in a safe and timely manner, whilst also providing the information and service to maintain correct tyre pressures,” he says.

“Together with Nokian Tyres we intend to develop a skilled forestry dealer network that supports the needs of the forestry and timber industry by providing them great technical support to help customers reduce downtime and optimise tyre life.”

“We intend to give our forestry dealers access to all of the tyres required to support the industry, plus have the technical knowledge to fit the right tyre and provide great in-store and on-field service.”

Small wonder

Able to fit on an excavator, an intermediate bulk container (IBC) or the back of a dual-cab ute, the new Motofog MFX20B takes portable dust suppression to another level.

The unit is the smallest of the three Leotech Motofog units distributed in Australia by Boss Attachments.

The unit can be quickly converted from a stand-alone, wheeled unit that can be sited anywhere, to an IBC-mounted unit, suitable for utes and small trucks, designed for fully mobile dust suppression on haul roads, quarry faces, stockpiles and other areas.

With a water consumption rate of 20–24 litres per minute, a full unit can dispense water to a height of 10m and a range of 20–25m for about one hour using the tank, or continuously if water is supplied constantly.

Boss Attachments national operations and sales manager Rob Price says the unit only directs water where it is needed, able to draw its supplies from a tank or even the mains supply.

“The MFX20 will make a massive difference to your water consumption, making it both environmentally friendly and cost efficient,” he says.

“This is vital in areas where water is in short supply, or where reliant solely on mains water.

“With its on-board petrol engine, 189-degree range of oscillation, twin jet spray options, and full remote-control system, this is the compact solution.”

Boss also imports the larger MFX40, MFX60 and RFA series units, covering the full spectrum of mobile and fixed dust suppression requirements.

Cool running

The telehandler features a low diesel particulate emissions engine that is compliant with Stage 5 emissions regulations.

A forklift, which is powered by the same engine, is also available.

Other innovations in the Greener Choices range includes electric and hybrid boom and scissor lifts, a large range of battery powered hand tools and blended biodiesel, up to B7, which will be used across all Coates’ diesel engine-powered plant and equipment.

Greener lighting solutions such as solar powered, hybrid and portable LED options are also included, as are electric, lithium-ion battery-powered forklifts and other equipment for warehouse use.

“Coates Greener Choices range offers customers tangible opportunities to reduce emissions, improve efficiencies and commit to best practice environmental sustainability standards,” says Coates chief executive Murray Vitlich.

American equipment tracking solutions company Geoforce has launched two new asset trackers in Canada that it says offers its most flexible and cost-effective coverage options.

The new GT2c (cellular) and GT2h (cellular+satellite hybrid) trackers join the satellite-only GT2s in the company’s lineup for tracking non-powered assets and powered equipment.

Geoforce Australia has confirmed the company is currently undertaking approval processes with Australian carriers and networks, but is hoping to be able to launch the new products toward the end of this year.

Solar-powered and providing a wide range of device reporting configurations, over-the-air reporting profile update capabilities and industrial-strength durability, the trackers are built to work in difficult places – boasting certification for work in explosive environments.

The new GT2c device operates on LTE-M low-power cellular IoT networks, offering an optimal solution for operators using assets in mobile phone service range and who need cost-effective tracking.

The new GT2h device provides a unique hybrid solution that operates on cellular networks where available but automatically switches to global Iridium-powered satellite connectivity if mobile coverage is lost.

Geoforce chief executive James Maclean III says the devices reinforce his company’s position as a leader in asset traceability.

“Our GT2 devices underscore Geoforce’s promise that your assets and opportunities can always be in view,” he says.

“We can confidently say that our expanded GT2 line is raising the bar on asset visibility and rugged reliability for our customers around the world.”

Green machine

The Gel-5000 is Hevi’s second electric wheel loader offering but has been made considerably bigger than its predecessor – with a payload of five tonnes compared to the 1.8-tonne payload of the Gel-1800.

The Gel-5000 also features Hevi’s latest loader design with high range articulation to better access all angles on a worksite, all terrain tyres, and quality hydraulics that can lift buckets ranging from 2.7 to 4.5 cubic metres in capacity.

The new wheel loader remains emissions-free thanks to its allelectric, lithium-ion drive motor which produces 120kW (161 horsepower) of rated power.

A battery can power the Gel5000 for up to eight hours on a full charge. Charging the machine takes three hours at 90kW and five hours at 60kW, however an optional 60/90kW output charging facility will be required.

Hevi also says the lack of an internal combustion engine not only eliminates emissions, but also ensures clearer air and reduces noise levels on typical worksites to better protect operators from hazardous decibel levels.

result, a lower cost of ownership across the machine’s lifespan.

Hevi chief executive Raymond Wang says the Gel-5000 offers an enhanced operator experience.

“Our Gel-5000 once again raises the bar on what is possible, with extensive new advantages for operators, simple maintenance and zero operating emissions,” he says.

Inside the cab, the Gel-5000 is fully air-conditioned and has been rated to work in temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius. Improved seat suspension also keeps operators comfortable with the electric drive also producing less vibration than a standard diesel wheel loader.

An on-board display provides the operators with live updates on the machine’s performance, including battery levels, motor temperature and pressure levels, while intuitive controls make operating the loader a simplified experience.

Hevi has also produces a range of electric excavators and forklifts.

A timeline for the Gel-5000’s arrival into Australia has not been given.

The name game

Managing a major rebrand is a difficult task for any company – so how did Volvo CE manage it with Rokbak?

One full year has passed since Rokbak unveiled its bold new name to the construction industry – a decision that remained a secret until its announcement.

The manufacturer formerly known as Terex Trucks entered a new chapter in its history on September 1, 2021, when the brand was officially rebranded as Rokbak at the production facility in Motherwell, Scotland.

The brand was built on over eight decades of heritage since 1934 when the first highway rear dump truck –the Model 1Z – was built, in addition to seven years under the guidance of the Volvo Group, which acquired the brand in 2014.

To celebrate Rokbak’s first anniversary, managing director Paul Douglas has revealed the inside story about how the team kept the rebrand hidden from public eye until the announcement.

“I was amazed that it didn’t filter out, I kept thinking I’d see something on social media,” Douglas says.

“As the project progressed it pulled in more employees and more departments – there wasn’t a single function in the business that didn’t have to get involved.”

Among the changes involved in the rebrand was the unveiling of a new colour scheme and livery for the trucks, which now is a sandy brown with yellow accents on railings, as opposed to the whitecoloured Terex machines.

The few models that donned the new colour scheme were sold as ‘customer-specific colours’ –something Rokbak has done before.

Of course, pandemic-related restrictions helped as well, with fewer customers and journalists visiting the factory, meaning the risk of anyone finding out was lower.

“It was incredible how everyone in our team, the dealers and our external partners worked together to ensure it remained confidential. It just goes to show what a fantastic team we have, everyone pulled together and did their bit,” Douglas says.

A rebrand was not possible when Volvo CE originally purchased Terex Trucks in 2014, but that caveat had since expired, and after focusing on other aspects of the business, a fresh name was soon born.

“For the first few years changing our name wasn’t a high priority, as we focused on stabilising the business and investing in the product, manufacturing and our people,” Douglas says.

“But after we’d made such significant performance improvements to our articulated haulers, it was a natural progression to rebrand. Our customers and dealers also expected and supported a name change to reflect the new machines, so the rebrand was set in motion about four years ago.”

The name Rokbak was selected following customer and focus group feedback that implored the brand to

stick to its roots in hauling heritage.

One year on and Volvo CE has hailed the Rokbak rebrand as a success – not for the secrecy used to keep the changes under wraps, but in how the brand has since grown over the past 12 months to where it is today.

Rokbak’s appearances at European trade shows attracted the awe of the public while its social media channels also enjoyed an influx of new followers.

Orders of both the RA30 and RA40s have been steady as well, with interest in them coming from across the UK and the United States, through to Australia, France and Indonesia.

“The new name and colour really reinforce the point that our haulers operate on a completely different level now, and our customers have had nothing but praise for them,” Douglas concludes.

“That means our dealers have never been happier and that, in turn, has led to a buoyant mood at our factory, with more than 150 new colleagues now in place to support the increased demand.”

CBA executive general manager for everyday business banking James Fowle says the offerings help support the industry.

Justin Spinks has taken out Service Technician of the Year at the inaugural RDO Vermeer Technician Awards.

Spinks, a technician from Vermeer Australia’s Richlands branch, was one of three winners at the Technician Awards, which recognised the achievements of service and parts technicians throughout Vermeer’s Australian dealer network.

Finalists met in Brisbane prior to the awards ceremony in late August, where they competed in hands-on testing and training across Vermeer’s equipment range before joining colleagues, management and family members at the event.

After winning Service Technician of the Year, Spinks said he was optimistic about the future of Vermeer.

“Thank you to RDO for the opportunity and the privilege to participate in these awards. Congratulations to the other finalists in my category, and I also thank all those who have helped me throughout my career to master the skills I have developed,” Spinks said.

“I’m looking forward to continuing to represent the company, and helping our customers to chip and grind, drill or trench, vacuum or load with the best machines around.”

Daniel Ryan, also from the Vermeer Richlands branch in Queensland, was named Parts Interpreter of the Year, while Toby Jones from the Townsville branch won Apprentice Service Technician of the Year.

Established this year, the awards were presented to Vermeer Australia’s specialised service and parts technicians who have excelled across all aspects of the job, from exceptional customer service to excellent technical and diagnostic skills.

In all, nine technicians were nominated across the three categories.

Winter chill

High interest and a lack of supplies have continued to drive down construction activity in Australia in August –but the rate looks to be slowing

Rises in interest rates have caused Australia’s construction industry to shrink for the third consecutive month.

In all, three of the four industry segments recorded falls in activity across August as builders and constructors link the fall to the rise in interest rates by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), according to an industry performance index.

The contraction, however, was softened compared to figures from July in the Australian Performance of Construction Index (PCI) lifting by 2.6 points to 47.9.

Any measurement in the index above 50 suggests the industry is still expanding, while numbers below that mark indicate contraction.

The index is produced by the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) and Housing Industry Association (HIA) each month.

Across August, construction activity across the housing (-1.3 to 33.3), apartments (-12.5 to 37.5), and commercial (2.9 to 45.8) sectors continued its dip into contraction, however overall activity was lifted by a 13.3-point change in engineering activity.

The high level of engineering activity, which now sits at 59.1, was enough to lift the total activity index reading by 3.5 points to an improved 46.2.

Chief policy advisor for Ai Group Peter Burn says the PCI indicates activity, along with employment which dropped -5.3 to 56.0, was a result of the interest rate rises.

“The pull back of the Australian construction sector continued in August with three of the four industry segments recording falls in activity and employment across the industry dropping in the month,” he says.

“Engineering construction was the exception, with a strong turnaround in activity recorded in August.

“Builders and constructors link much of the fall in activity to rises in interest rates in recent months.”

Elsewhere, the number of new orders rose sharply to buck the trend, rising by 7.9 points and entering a state of expansion at 51.0.

Other supply constraints continue to inhibit the sector, including labour and input costs, which dropped -1.2 to 92.6.

Capacity utilisation rose slightly by

two per cent to 82.6 and remained elevated just as it has since the start of 2021.

HIA economist Tom Devitt explains the RBA’s crash rate further.

“The RBA’s cash rate increases have brought an end to the housing boom. Climbing borrowing costs are compounding the costs of construction that have surged on the back of land, labour and materials shortages,” Devitt says.

“Fewer people are visiting display villages, sales volumes have dropped, and there is less lending for the purchase of new and existing homes.

“There is a risk that the enormous pipeline of work still to complete will obscure the impact of rising rates on the broader economy, resulting in unnecessary rate hikes from the RBA.”

The PCI reading from recent months follows similar data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which indicated monthly building approvals data from July for detached houses and multi-units covering all states and territories.

The data indicates the large size of Australia’s existing home building pipeline, rather than the declines in housing demand. Approvals for new house building rose by one per cent while new home sales declined by 13.1 in July.

Approvals of multi units did fall sharply, with the three months up to July falling 16.8 per cent compared to the same time last year.

“Despite this decline they remain comparable with volumes of approvals prior to the pandemic,” Devitt says.

“The strong volume of house approvals in recent months reflects the significant volume of new homes across Australia that had been sold earlier in the year, but not yet approved.

“Given the large volume of work under construction and approved but not commenced, there will be a significant lag between the increase in the cash rate and an adverse impact on new home construction.”

A relocation to the north of Brisbane is set to help Onetrak expand its footprint throughout Queensland.

Onetrak, which is the distributor for brands such as Anaconda, Hidromek and Tigercat across Australia, relocated to Caboolture late last year after three years at its previous base in Rocklea.

The new facility features a large workshop, parts warehouse and offices, and given its proximity to the M1 – the major highway heading north from Brisbane –sending machinery and equipment across the state has never been easier.

Onetrak regional manager Brad Madden says the move will help the company better serve its customer base, much of which is situated north of Brisbane.

“We have a very solid team here now in Queensland of team members with broad experience across construction, quarry, mining and forestry,” says Madden.

“Our customers know us historically as forestry machinery experts, but our customer base now stretches across all different industries.

“Thanks to the broad experience of our field service team, we are now well-positioned to provide service, maintenance, machine rebuilds and air-conditioning servicing and repairs for all makes and models across all industry sectors.”

To mark the opening of the new facility, an open day was held in early

August where Onetrak showcased a large range of machinery including Dressta’s new TD20M extra dozer.

Other machinery on show included a range of Hidromek excavators, backhoe loaders and wheel loaders, and Anaconda screens, trommels and scalpers.

The Caboolture facility also has a fleet of 4x4 service vehicles on deck that can travel to all customer sites and is backed by Onetrak’s parts inventory and spare parts expertise.

“Our national expansion plan would not have been complete without the important Queensland territory. This move allows us to better service our valued clients in forestry and mining where there is already a significant population of Tigercat, Striker and Dressta customers in the region,” Onetrak managing director David Hazell says.

Mackay expansion

Planned to open in 2024, a new Mackay Business Centre will help Hastings Deering better serve the region’s earthmover operators

Hastings Deering is set to break ground on a new Business Centre in Mackay that will be five times larger than the existing facility.

The planned 25,000 square metre centre was announced in late August by the Queensland Caterpillar distributor, with construction set to be completed and the facility operational by late-2024.

Located on its existing Hastings Park site, the facility will provide increased warehousing capacity to improve the availability of parts and componentry for customers, as well as a streamlined ordering process and reduced turnaround times.

The expanded parts fulfillment centre will also include a stateof-the-art 800sqm hose factory, which will be purpose-built for the facility, a 22,000sqm undercover

parts warehouse and a 4,800sqm undercover all-weather vehicle load and unload zone.

Other features of the new business centre will include upgraded employee work areas, a retail shopfront, rental shop, café and sales floor machinery display.

Hastings Deering chief executive Mark Scott says the new facility will help the brand better service its customers in the region.

“This will be the most significant investment in our facilities since 2014 and will position our dealership for future growth, allowing us to better serve our customers in the region,” Scott says.

“The facility has been designed to incorporate innovative safety and sustainable energy solutions and improve our employee and customer experiences.

“We are confident the new centre will demonstrate a best practice design model that is scalable, safe, secure and sustainable for our operations and our people.”

To improve the sustainability and reduce energy consumption of the facility, 8000sqm of rooftop solar panels with battery storage will be fitted, in addition to LED lighting and rainwater harvesting.

“We are investing to meet the needs of our customers into the future,” Scott says.

“The coming months are an exciting time as we start our planning to build the centre.

With special additions for work around fertilisers, the Hyundai wheel loader range distributed by Porter Group has the answers for CSBP

Super solution

From the northern reaches of Geraldton to the south eastern port of Esperance, it’s little exaggeration to say that CSBP fertilisers are used on almost every farm in Western Australia. Its range of fertilisers – including superphosphate and super potash – and brands such as Agras, Agstar and Agflow, are in wide use across the state.

CSBP locally manufactures a large range of fertilisers at its Kwinana granulation and superphosphate manufacturing plants, before being shipped to customers and the company’s regional WA hubs in Geraldton, Esperance, Albany and Bunbury.

CSBP’s heavy vehicle group leader Marty Ulyatt explains that the fertiliser side of the business is a hive of activity in the first half of the year when fertilisers are in peak demand – while the ammonium

nitrate and sodium cyanide sides of the business are busy year-round.

Ulyatt oversees a fleet of 21 Hyundai wheel loaders that primarily work in the fertiliser and ammonium nitrate dispatching plants, loading the products into truck hoppers for shipment to customers and the company’s regional hubs.

In his 25-year career with the company, Ulyatt has overseen a transition from a variety of other wheel loader manufacturers to now being solely Hyundais, with the company having owned roughly 40 of those units during this time.

“I think it was 2007–08 when that first machine got here, and we straight away got some machines to the country works as well,” he says.

“We began with the Hyundai -7 series machines and have since transitioned through the -7A series and the -9 series.

“And we’ve now recently put a Hyundai HL970 loader into our Kwinana ammonium nitrate facility. This machine was one of the first Hyundais of its kind in Australia with a Tier Five emissions standard engine,” he says.

Able to travel in and out of the facility with ease, the new HL970 loader has made a good first impression with its environmental credentials as well as its fuel efficiency.

“We found at the moment it’s only using between 13–14 litres per hour of diesel, which is very efficient for a machine in this situation,” Ulyatt says.

cool pack and the cabin is bigger, less cluttered and more functional, he adds.

“The guys say it’s got plenty of power. In the ammonium nitrate facility they were running a HL760, so they had smaller machines,” he adds.

“And now they’ve got this one, not only is it bigger and more powerful, but they love it because they found they can do everything quicker, being a bigger machine.”

The aspects of the Hyundais that attracted CSBP to the models back in 2007 are still in place, he adds.

“We did a bit of research [back then] and found the wheel loaders had all the functions of our other machines such as clutch cut-off function, ride control function, bucket and boom

kick outs, a kick down function, electronic machine monitoring, reverse cooling fans and auxiliary hydraulic functions,” he says.

“But they also ran Cummins engines and ZF transmissions and axles, which are all quality obviously and are all locally supported really well in Perth,” he added.

Hard wearing

Spending much of its time operating inside a building can take its toll on any piece of equipment – particularly one dealing with fertilisers.

“As with all machinery in corrosive environments, we needed to ensure a machine build that resulted in minimal breakdowns,” Ulyatt says.

To do this, Ulyatt and his team consulted with Porter Group, which took over distribution of the Hyundai range in Perth in 2012, working with sales manager Matt Milner, service manager Jeff Meyrick and Larry Go – who Ulyatt calls the unit’s “build maestro”.

“They’ve just refined and pretty much mastered the build, I can almost leave them to it now when we order a new machine,” he says.

Fitting the machines to operate well in these environments is no straightforward task – starting with replacing steel hardware such as bolts, hinges, latches and clamps with stainless steel where practicable.

exposed hydraulic hoses and fittings and all electrical connectors and any exposed power or engine relays are mounted within IP 67-rated housings,” Ulyatt says.

“We put LED lighting throughout, we use Lanotec on external surfaces and we add on HEPA-type cabin pressurisers and Lincoln auto lube grease systems with stainless steel grease injectors.”

Working inside increases the amount of fertiliser dust that can creep into these units – without the prospect of ever being washed off by the occasional bit of rainfall.

That’s where the pressurisers come in, helping to keep the dust out of cabs, while reverse fans on the machine’s cool pack helps to blow the dust away from those units.

“We do as much as we can to stop

any sort of ingress, whether it’s moisture or dust or any of that sort of thing,” Ulyatt says.

“Porter Group will ring me up from time to time and ask if I want to come up and have a look – and almost all the time everything is going well.

“I will say that about Porter –they’re really accommodating with whatever their customers need. It’s been a really good thing, and part of the reason why we stay with them.”

While there is a lot of work involved in getting the machines to that stage, Ulyatt says it certainly pays off.

“A testament to the build spec is that we’ve got a Hyundai machine that has now clocked up over 20,000 hours, which is really rare for any machine in a fertiliser facility… and actually it doesn’t look too bad either,” he says.

Going the distance

Ulyatt says that wheel loaders at the CSBP facilities tend to do between 2,000–3,000 hours of work every year, and that the units typically work between 10,000–15,000 hours during their time with the company.

“Right now, in this site, we have 11 loaders, and they have 10 out in the country working. So we are running 21 machines at this point,” he says.

“I think we’ve had close to 40 Hyundai wheel loaders since we got our first one and the build spec just gets better and better. And we know what parts we need just to keep on rolling.”

While he says it is important to keep updating the fleet to ensure all necessary parts are freely available, Ulyatt says the company has been able to build

“Hyundai don’t seem to have the red tape or delay issues that other manufacturers have… and if we don’t have parts for any reason, we can pretty much get them within a couple of days, generally.”

CSBP does most of its maintenance work in-house with a small team of diesel mechanics, auto electricians and hydraulics specialists, with Ulyatt adding that the team are also admirers of the Hyundai range.

The redevelopment of the Archerfield Airport was one of seven project winners celebrated at the recent Civil Contractors Federation QLD (CCF QLD) Earth Awards.

The Awards recognise outstanding quality in civil construction by showcasing the best technologies and innovation used by civil contractors from across Queensland.

Awards were presented across seven groups according to their respective project value ranging from below and up to $2 million through to projects valued greater than $150 million.

BMD Constructions was the principal contractor on Stage One of the Archerfield Airport Project and won in the category for projects valued between $5 to $10 million.

To complete Stage One of the project, BMD Constructions was required to upgrade the airport’s main runway, associated taxiways and infrastructure, despite facing several rain delays and a re-sequenced schedule to ensure the project delivery deadline was met.

BMD Constructions saved $2.37 million by implementing a recycling strategy that removed material disposal costs, reduced truck

movements and minimised imported material, all carried out while the airport remained open.

CCF QLD says the collaboration between BMD and the Archerfield Airport Corporation (AAC) ensured the project was delivered to a high standard, adding that the innovative methodology used has the potential to be implemented to other airport upgrades across Australia.

CCF QLD chief executive Damian Long says the Earth Awards recognised the impressive engineering techniques and achievements by the industry over the past year.

“It is very exciting to be able to celebrate the 29th CCF QLD Earth Awards at this year’s Excellence in Civil Construction Awards night.

CCF QLD prides itself on celebrating industry and it was fantastic to see so many members and industry stakeholders joining us on Friday night even in such an unpredictable climate with COVID-19 lockdowns happening across the nation.

In the first week of September 2022 the federal government held its Jobs and Skills Summit and, two days earlier, the Queensland govern ment released its Queensland Work force Strategy.

The week prior Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) released its report, Queensland’s Renewable Future, a study into the investment jobs and skills that will be required to support current net zero targets. Clearly skills are headlining discussions across the country and no sector is spared.

The CSQ report focuses on one segment of one industry in one state and the forecast pressure on labour resources is staggering. According to the report, Queensland is on the cusp of a renewable energy boom. The boom will be supercharged by the advancement of hydrogen generation and export.

Key findings are:

• Up to 26,700 construction workers from the early 2020s to 2050 could be required to realise Queensland’s renewables boom

• T his follows a capital expenditure requirement approaching $13.9 billion annually to meet the state’s net zero 2050 target while building a strong hydrogen industry serving both domestic and export needs

The federal government’s Job and Skills Summit is an honourable effort to bring all stakeholders together to brainstorm solutions.

Initiatives such as supporting women to re-engage with the market and providing incentives for pensioners to work more hours will go some way of addressing labour shortages, but when you consider the numbers of construction workers required in Queensland alone these initiatives simply will not be enough.

Approximately 8.7 per cent of the current workforce is engaged in construction. It is fair to say that only a similar percentage of the unlocked workforce will be made available through the above initiatives.

Our workforce is ageing and, regardless of retention strategies beyond retirement, the danger is the rate of people leaving the industry will be greater than those entering.

Strategies that attract labour from different industries and/or from other states, while they can be beneficial to our industry, only rob one industry and/or state to pay another. The result is bad for Queensland and Australia.

International immigration is a must. It must be targeted to ensure

Upskilling of the current workforce so they have the skills to meet the emerging technologies and industries will be essential. There will need to be a holistic training strategy that focuses on attraction, retention and progression. CSQ has recognised these key points. The challenge is to get all policy makers to be aligned around these points.

The next issue to solve will be the shortage of housing for the influx of people we will need. The labour shortage conversation must be held in conjunction with discussions of liveability issues such as housing and transport infrastructure. This is a challenge in the face of rising interest rates, increasing supply costs and supply challenges.

An outcome of the collective summits and reports is that any solution must address falling productivity. We have seen productivity decrease in the civil construction sector as well as an overall general productivity decrease across industrial services.

Increasing productivity does not involve decreasing wages, but rather producing more for less. Wages are a small component of the productivity conversation, however how we engage the workforce to assist in producing productive outcomes is critical.

Civil Contractors Federation Queensland Ltd is concerned that the push to revert to industry-wide bargaining would be a massive step in the wrong direction as far as productivity goes. Productivity must be at the forefront of these discussions.

If the solutions are right, we will see a lift in real wages and increased productivity, producing better living affordability and standards. I look forward to real bipartisan leadership on these issues that ignores the noise of self-interested third parties.

The transition from CNH Industrial managing the distribution of Case Construction Equipment’s (Case CE) range to new distributor McIntosh Construction Equipment has been utterly seamless.

Since taking over as the national distributor for Case CE in April of last year, McIntosh CE has carried the torch for the Iowa-based brand Down Under.

McIntosh CE was established as a division of the Perth-based McIntosh Group after the new distribution agreement with CNH was signed.

Under the agreement, McIntosh CE not only took on the distribution rights for Case CE in Australia, but it also purchased the manufacturer’s Case Victoria retail dealership and assumed responsibility for all parts and warranty processing across the country.

On top of the Victorian Case dealership, McIntosh has kept the 10-strong dealer network that sells

Case CE machinery around the country – just as it was under CNH – to ensure machines can get to customers as quickly as possible.

The dealer network means getting machinery into and around the country isn’t solely reliant on Case Victoria or the McIntosh Group in Perth, according to McIntosh CE general manager Paul Davies.

“We had a good volume of sales go through last calendar year and financial year. It’s been it’s been a good transition,” Davies says.

“We use all ports around the country to get the machines to the dealership as effectively as possible.

“They’re standalone dealerships that look after the entire product range and all servicing parts as required.”

While supply chain disruptions have certainly impacted the availability of new machinery throughout Australia – an issue faced by the earthmoving industry as a whole – Case CE is expected to

introduce several machines Down Under over the next few years that are a cause for excitement for Davies, McIntosh CE and its customers.

Among the new machines set for release in Australia is the Case TV620B compact track loader (CTL) – the biggest and most powerful CTL ever produced by Case CE.

The TV620B is powered by a 114 horsepower (85kW) engine, Davies says, and has a rated operating capacity of 2.81 tonnes, a breakout force of 5.85 tonnes (bucket)/5.48 tonnes (lift), and 1.87m of track length on the ground.

To accommodate all that power, the CTL also includes more features as standard than before, including electro-hydraulic controls, high-flow hydraulics, automatic Ride Control and a programmable hydraulic reversing fan.

The TV620B has just been released in the United States and is expected to arrive in Australia by mid to late 2023.

Also in line for an Aussie debut next year are the D-Series mini excavators, which made their European debut recently at the Hillhead Quarry just outside of Manchester in the UK.

“The D-Series mini excavators will start to come into the country next year. We’re expecting around Q2 next year,” Davies says.

Further product expansion is also likely, according to Davies, who hinted at an influx of machinery in the future.

CNH Industrial has planned to move its manufacturing plant of dozers from Burlington, Iowa, to Brazil – something that Davies says will help its ambitions in the dozer market here in Australia.

“We’re obviously looking to expand our range in terms of the product offering with those new large frame CTLs coming into the market,” he says.

“Case is moving their dozer production from Burlington to Brazil, so that will only increase the range of

dozers coming into the marketplace [in Australia].

“It’s exciting for us and we’re actually starting to make inroads in the dozer market which is pleasing to see.”

With the new distribution agreement now firmly established and new products on the horizon, the outlook for Case CE in Australia is optimistic – something which Davies says will help take the brand to ‘bigger and better things’.

In all this activity however, one thing remains important above all else for Davies and the team at McIntosh CE – providing quality service to customers.

“[We want to make sure] that we’re servicing our customers as best we can,” he says.

“We consider service to be front of mind for our dealer group. We’re very supportive of the customer and understand that the customer’s machine needs to be working so

that customers can make money and that’s our focus.

“Our strong dealer network – where the focus is definitely on the customer – is the major difference with our brand compared to others. In general, these are family-owned dealerships with a strong focus on their customers. And the level of support they give is second to none.”

To show this, Case CE has begun its ‘let’s make some noise’ campaign, which aims at showing that the manufacturer is in partnership with its clients to keep business humming –nice and loud.

“The sound of silence is the worst sound in the world. At least to us at Case,” the campaign reads.

“Because hearing nothing means nothing’s getting done… That’s not for us. We want our customers to make some noise, the louder the better.”

Injune earthmoving contractor Nathan McFadzen says buying an Olympus loader is a “real no-brainer”

Dam builder Nathan McFadzen says his Olympus Loader has helped him to lift more, load more and save more during his contract work.

A full-time earthmoving contractor based out of Injune, Queensland, McFadzen was on the hunt for a reliable loader to buy back in 2018 when he discovered Olympus Loaders in Loganholme.

Calculated decision

Brisbane-based Precisionscreen began manufacturing its Scorpion pugmills in the 1980s when the business was established, and nearly 40 years later the mixers remain popular at quarry sites across the country.

But while the market appetite for the pugmills has remained strong, the equipment has undergone significant development and refinement over the years in a bid to provide operators with more automation than ever before.

First introduced on the Scorpion pugmill eight years ago, the PLC control system is designed and built at Precisionscreen’s Wacol facility in conjunction with control systems and sensors manufacturer ifm – making mixing materials an easier and faster process.

“The PLC system enables you to electronically control the functionality of the machine. It’s essentially ease of operation for the on-site operator,” says Precisionscreen senior sales executive Jonny McMutry.

“You can have either an auto or manual running function for the machine, but what that can also do is enable you to preset a particular volume of water or a particular volume of cement.

“The idea for the PLC system is just to create a greater sense of automation for the machine, a greater sense of reliability for less calculations or less difficulty for the on-site operator.”

Using the PLC system, the Scorpion pugmill is a single operator machine, meaning the operator who is loading the pugmill simply needs to turn on

the machine each morning and select which function or blend they are trying to achieve.

“The machine takes care of itself to some degree,” McMutry says.

On the Scorpion pugmill, configurations can be changed with the touch of a button via the ifm CR1081 control panel.

Of course, the technology of pugmills hasn’t always been like this. Up until the introduction of the PLC system eight years ago, Precisionscreen’s offering was far more limited.

Older iterations of the Scorpion pugmill required operators to do the calculations themselves – constantly stopping and starting the machine to calculate and achieve the desired speed and tonnage.

to have almost like a sticker chart on the machine based on what you’d have to calculate off of the loader scales, how much materials you were putting through the machine and adjust the speeds on the water pump,” McMutry says.

“Since then, we designed an additive bin but again it was screw controlled, which meant you would have to speed up and slow down the screw conveyer based on what tonnage you estimated was going off the belt.

“We’re now able to use the PLC system to calculate quickly how much material is going up the belt and what speed the water pump needs to run out to get the right percentage of water base.”

The PLC control system’s automation not only results in a less stressful day’s work for the operator, but it also allows for a longer and more productive day. Given there’s no setup or calculation time, the Scorpion pugmill can hit more than 10 hours day, according to McMutry – something that would have been unlikely with older models.

The fact that the Scorpion pugmill and the PLC control system are both

designed and manufactured in Australia is also an advantage. Several in-house technicians employed by Precisionscreen are tasked with adjusting the control systems, as well as working on the latest developments with ifm.

“It has developed over time and over the years and again that’s the benefit of us fully manufacturing and developing the system within our Brisbane factory,” McMutry says.

“We can design, develop and adjust based on both customers’ expectations and industry standards.

“Bringing it all in-house and having a couple of in-house technicians looking after it means that if we do need to make adjustments, which we have done over the past eight years since we’ve introduced a system, we can do it pretty quickly.”

Precisionscreen can also remotely plug into machines to conduct maintenance and check pressure settings via Wi-Fi connectivity – which is an optional extra on the pugmills.

The Scorpion pugmill itself is powered by a 162kW engine, which can produce up to 300

tonnes per hour of road base with optimum moisture content.

The pugmill can also conduct cement-stabilised applications when cement or similar materials are loaded into the additive bin through an inlet chute via solos or an additive bin feeder.

In the pughead twin auger shafts that feature 50 reversible wear paddles and a 3,500mm-long pug head chamber with two speeds ensure material can mix adequately.

Other features of the Scorpion pugmill include wind down legs for added stability whilst in operation and additional safety features such as galvinaised guarding, rock guards, a safety warning beacon and siren and pughead guards are all fitted.

Precisionscreen offers the Scorpion pugmill in two configurations –the PLC and OMC – the latter of which does not feature the electronic PLC system.

UKW Spares has branched out into Queensland to better serve a growing customer base

Having opened two new branches within the same number of months, UKW Spares has positioned itself well to serve a growing customer base in Australia.

Established in 1996, UKW Spares first specialised in dismantling old Komatsu machinery to on-sell the stripped parts to customers. Eventually, the business branched out into different avenues and soon began importing its own catalogue of new parts to sell.

UKW Spares general manager Darren Attard says the company now sells new and reconditioned parts, largely for Komatsu and Hitachi products.

“It was something we saw a need for it. It was an avenue for us,” he says.

Since its inception, UKW Spares has always carried the Komatsu

line of parts and products across the manufacturer’s entire machinery lineup. However, a business shift within the past 12 months has seen the introduction of Hitachi parts into the fold.

Given the popularity of both original equipment manufacturer (OEM) machines in Australia and the quick availability of new parts from around the world, UKW Spares is now able to cover two markets.

“Over the last 15–20 years, we’ve done Komatsu, so now we’ve expanded to the Hitachi range of machinery and parts,” Attard says.

“We didn’t have Hitachi parts before so now we’re focusing on buying and dismantling machines, and buying new parts and components for Hitachi machines. We’re going to have a broad range of both Komatsu and Hitachi parts available.”

The business has also seen an uptick in demand for new and used earthmoving equipment and parts during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the business deciding to upscale, with two new branches to better serve its customers in the northern parts of the country.

Melbourne, a new Brisbane branch in the southwest industrial suburb of Rocklea opened its doors in July, and a Mount Louisa-based Townsville branch was opened in August.

Attard says the two northern facilities will increase UKW Spares’ footprint to help it better service its growing customer base.

With a larger network of branches and a wide range of both new and used parts, Attard and the team at UKW Spares is positioned to help customers given the many choices on offer.

“Obviously, the client has a choice. They can buy brand new, they can buy reconditioned used parts, or you can just buy take off [stripped parts], which is just taken off of the machine,” he says.

Acting as the hub for UKW Spares’ operations with a wrecking yard and sizeable warehouse, the Shepparton branch is the business’ dismantling division for the new line items, which total 20,000 across all branches.

“And then there’s many line items in the used section, which are available,” he adds.

“A large portion of our business is the used parts side of it and we’re always buying used machines for dismantling.

“We’ve got some large suppliers for new parts overseas, which is where we get our parts from. We import probably a couple containers a month of new parts and then the used side supplements that.”

The repercussions of the pandemic have been exacerbated

throughout the earthmoving industry as OEMs have faced significant supply chain delays when importing new machinery.

As a result, the availability of spare parts – both new and used – means operators can keep their machines running.

“Because of what’s happened now for the last 18 months, the OEMs haven’t been able to supply new equipment in a timely manner,” Attard says.

“If you’re waiting for some machines, it could be six to 14 months for one new machine.

“There is an emphasis on keeping the machine going to keep the job going. So, it leads to where the client needs to either keep his machine going or rebuild it.

“We are an avenue where they get the parts to keep those machines going. We’ve been extremely busy.”

Machines are dismantled once they are brought to the yard, with components then pulled apart before being rebuilt, repainted and catalogued into the database.

UKW Spares’ other branches will then be able to see what is available and can request the part if a customer requires it.

“If a customer rings up and wanted a part which is on the shelf in Shepparton, it’d be in Brisbane within two days. If it was in Melbourne, we can have it brought down on the same day,” Attard says.

With a recent Silver Screen debut and plans for expansion of its Wauchope site, it’s all action at Excavator Parts

If you have managed to see the latest instalment in the Marvel cinematic universe, there’s every chance you’ve laid eyes on one of the many excavators acquired by the team at Excavator Parts.

The excavator was procured by Marvel’s production team for the filming of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which took place in Sydney and various other locations around New South Wales.

Filming of the movie occurred in Australia as part of the previous federal government’s $24.1 million location incentive grant, which meant to provide “unprecedented opportunities for the Australian screen industry” but has also seen its influence reach into other sectors.

For Peter Jilg and the rest of the team at the Wauchope-based Excavator Parts this meant the latest Marvel film was an opportunity to try something different in what has proved to be a busy year to date.

In the scene, a battle commences amidst a road worksite where a bus has crashed into the side of an excavator. But the cameo in the Marvel film isn’t the only movie Jilg has been involved with, also supplying excavator seats and hand controls for a smaller local science fiction film.

Away from the red carpet, Excavator Parts is set to expand its business operations, having purchased another block of land in Wauchope on NSW’s central coast.

The land will be used as a workshop site and second storage yard for Excavator Parts to completely dismantle excavators for their spare parts. Machines ranging from one to up to 50 tonnes are dismantled from a wide range of popular brands including Case IHI, Komatsu, Cat, Doosan and more.

“It’s exciting to see the ‘small family business’ grow into what it has over the years being in business,” Jilg says.

In addition to its inventory of excavator parts, the business also specialises in the rebuilding of final drive systems, travel motors and main hydraulic pumps for its customers.

And while the business name certainly suggests Excavator Parts only provides parts for those machines, its activity throughout 2022 suggests that isn’t the case. Among the other machines to enter the yard so far this year include a Komatsu cherry picker and a Tigercat L830 leveling feller buncher.

Despite its foray into Hollywood this year, Excavator Parts remains a

local family business at its core, and one only needs to see the work the Jilg family does in the local community to understand that.

Excavator Parts sponsors the father and son Jilg Racing team, which competes in off-road races taking place in towns such as Wallabadah and Emu Creek.

“As a local family-run business, we understand the last two years have come with its challenges, such as excessive weather and [pandemic-induced] shutdowns and isolations, and seeing many of our local community overcome such devastating floods and weather damages is encouraging and we look forward to helping our community in any way we can,” Jilg says.

Material recycling is getting more popular but, for Thomas Manufacturing’s owner Errol Thomas, the demand for trommels has never slowed.

“For recycling, we probably haven’t stopped for the last 10 to 15 years,” he says.

“In all states we have lots of gear doing recycling.”

Thomas Manufacturing builds trommels, batching plants, conveyors, industrial feeders and much more at its plant in Dalby, in south east Queensland.

Used to sort through various materials to screen out undesired objects, the market for trommels is a wide one, Thomas says.

“One plant might be mulch, the next one might be construction and demolitionbased – you never know what the next phone call will be.”

For mulch and ground green waste separation, the standard trommels Thomas builds are equipped with a 6m x 2m double barrel fitted to a single frame, powered by four 5.5kW drives and with a 10 cubic metre feeder, feeding onto a discharge conveyor to the trommel.

Those pictured here have recently been sold to heavy haulage and land clearing company Corbet’s Group to sort through bark and mulch for its land clearing division.

For concrete recycling, Thomas builds a 6m x 2m trommel fitted with high tensile mesh and 100mm lifters, powered by two SEW 5.5kW drives, as the standard model.

That said, the trommels sold are built to

a customer’s needs – depending on how big the company is, and what they are processing.

“There’s a lot of bin companies in Sydney that we deal with, some of them only have small yards and deal with small bins, and some of them have quite large operations where they’re using 20 metre skips… and they might bring those in five to 10 of those a day,” he says.

“Your equipment’s got to be big enough to handle all that – and then sometimes they are processing every day and sometimes they’re only processing three days a week.”

For construction and demolition (C&D) waste, the trommels are often used to sort through and separate paper, plastics and other materials from concrete, brick and masonry – with that material often then crushed and used for ground coverage on other building sites.

“For C&D waste you’ve got to build the gear a little bit differently – the trommels are built a lot more heavy duty,” Thomas says.

“Most of these guys are pre-sorting everything before it goes into the system, on the ground using small excavators and equipment – but you can get logs and all sorts of stuff in C&D waste,” he says.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has started work on a new base for its operations in Victoria, with the new facility set to provide for a range of functions for the company.

Located in Dandenong South in Melbourne’s south east, the new facility is about 5km away from TMHA’s existing facility on Abbotts Road – but will be 81 per cent larger at 32,600 square metres.

The building area will take up half of the available land with 16,350 square metres set aside for the facility itself – a 34 per cent increase over the previous building.

At 12,827 square metres, the new warehouse and workshop area is 28 per cent larger than before, while a new 300 square metre ‘dirt’ demonstration area will allow for prospective customers to demonstrate its Huski Construction Equipment range of earthmoving products.

In addition, the new facility will feature state-of-the-art sealed and pressurised paint and preparation booths.

TMHA general manager for corporate compliance and project development Bob Walmsley says the new site will allow for a greater level of usability and innovation for the brand.

“With features like a dedicated dirt demonstration area, paint booths and support for parts and service, our new state-of-the-art facility will offer more for our valued Victorian customers,” Walmsley says.

“We all can’t wait to experience the fruits of this investment from TMHA and look forward to seeing the completed hub next year.”

Along with facilitating sales and rental of TMHA forklift and allied equipment, the new facility will serve as a regional base for major and corporate accounts operations, will hold inventories of new material handling and Huski construction equipment, and will offer full support coverage for parts, workshop and field servicing, and training facilities.

The purpose-designed new facility and the land it is built on is wholly owned by TMHA.

Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023.
