Easy operation

Kleemann has expanded its Pro range of crushers with the Mobirex MR 130(i), which can be used as a primary or secondary crusher.

The new impact crusher covers a wide range of applications, from soft and medium-hard natural stone to recycling applications such as the processing of concrete, rubble and asphalt. With a 250kW drive and continuous feed system an hourly output of up to 600 tonnes per hour is achieved.

Due to its all-electric drive concept E-Drive with the option of an external power supply, the MR 130(i) Pro can be operated on site free of emissions. Hydraulic oil is only required for setting and set-up functions, which reduces the environmental risk and maintenance costs. If the plant is operated via

the diesel generator, the power and load-dependent fan reduces not only the noise emissions also the fuel consumption. The optional power pack housing guarantees a further significant noise reduction.

Due to water spraying at relevant points such as the crusher inlet, the discharge conveyors and the post screening unit as well as various belt covers, the dust development can be reduced considerably.

A 8.4 square metre large, optional double-deck post screening unit (in the upper deck) makes it possible, with a single machine and without an additional screening plant, to produce two classified final grain sizes. The use of optional wind sifter can optimise the final product quality even further by removing

contamination in the material such as wood and plastic. The air flow can be controlled depending on the material.

With Kleemann’s intuitive holistic operating concept Spective the operator receives different tools to facilitate a typical workday. The 12-inch (30.5cm) touch panel has simple user guidance and visualisation. With the large Spective radio remote control, the crusher can be moved from the low loader and the set-up procedure carried out conveniently and at a safe distance from the machine.

The digital solution Spective Connect facilitates the work site digitalisation of the Mobirex MR 130(i) Pro. Plant data is transferred to the smartphone and reporting is made easier, meaning less downtime, higher productivity and more revenue.

Compaction selection

At the bauma 2022 construction exhibition, taking place October 24–30 in Munich, Tobroco-Giant is showing off new models of vibratory plates, rammers and roller vibrators. The company says it now offers a complete line of compaction machines after its acquisition of Ulbo Machinery last year.

Through its partnership with Honda, Tobroco-Giant says it is the first manufacturer to receive approval to take the electric vibratory plate into production. During bauma, the first electric vibratory

rammers and various new electric vibratory plates will make their debut.

The total compaction range consists of 24 models that come with the option of a petrol, diesel or electric motor from Honda, Hatz or Yanmar. Giant supplies four rammers with a weight of 58 to 80kg. The vibratory plates are divided into 11 leading types (51–180kg), eight link plates (two-way, 180–485kg) and a roller vibrator. They deliver a maximum impact force of 67kN and have a base plate 30 to 85cm wide.

At the previous edition of bauma,

Tobroco-Giant introduced its first two electric wheel loaders, the G2200E and G2200E X-tra. It says that the range of electrically driven models will be expanded so an electric variant will be available for every model, starting with the G2700E and G2700E X-tra.

With an operating weight of 2,595kg, both machines operate in a class above the G2200E (X-tra) and are capable of handling heavier work. A tipping load of 2,300kg for the G2700E X-tra ensures that lifting and transporting complete pallets of bricks or tiles is undertaken with ease.

Giant distributor Delta Equipment Pty Ltd says that these new machines will be available in Australia mid next year.

Available with optional battery-electric driveline for zero-emission tramming, Epiroc’s new Boomer E10 and E20 drill rigs offer great flexibility and coverage thanks to their small footprint and powerful, multi-purpose BUT 45-booms, it says.

As part of Epiroc’s Smart series, the drill rigs are equipped with automation features that increase operator safety and productivity, and come with an optional battery-electric driveline for reduced environmental impact and healthier underground conditions.

Besides being compact enough for mine development, both drill rigs feature BUT 45-booms with telescopic feed beams that fit a wide range of applications and can tackle the requirements of heavy-duty construction work with ease.

“This is yet another automation break-through for face drilling where Epiroc leads the way to safer and more productive mining and construction operations,” President of Epiroc’s Underground division Sami Niiranen says.

“Thanks to teleremote drilling the operator can drill a full face from a control room. Naturally, this is a safer workplace. In addition, you can reach up to 25 per cent increased productivity by drilling during shift changes and lunch breaks,” Epiroc global product manager Camilla Spångberg says.

Furthermore, both drill rigs provide operators with setup assist. Thanks to the carrier being equipped with an advanced scanner measuring the distance to the walls and face, positioning the rig perfectly in the mine or tunnel becomes an easy task for the operator.

“In combination with digital drill plans, setup assist eliminates timeconsuming repositioning. It also ensures both productivity and great quality,” Spångberg says.

RENTAL

Hastings Deering will be increasing the number of machines it has available to rent

Demand surge

In order to better handle the increased demand for machine rentals in Australia, Hastings Deering has shifted its focus to an expansion drive to best serve its customers.

The expansion will see the number of Cat machines, such as excavators, wheel loaders, articulated trucks and other fleet staples, grow to bolster the rental fleet and meet customer demand.

Hastings Deering Australian rental and used equipment manager Peter Papastergos says the company will continue to reap the benefits of the current machinery landscape.

“Rental demand from the Australian construction, infrastructure and mining sectors continues to grow,” Papastergos says.

“Because these industries rely heavily on equipment hire for the various project phases and construction cycles, this has led to rental and used equipment sales growing and the trend looks set to continue.”

Demand for rental and used construction machinery has risen over the past two years as supply chain delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic has hindered the ability to ship new machinery around the world.

With little new machinery arriving in Australia because of the supply chain constraints, customers have turned to the rental and used markets in order to acquire machinery, resulting in the sustained appetite for such products.

For Hastings Deering, the impacts were mostly seen in new replacement and growth assets in terms of the company’s ability to renew and upsize its rental fleet to meet the demand.

As a result, the distributor has changed its Caterpillar forecasting periods from 6–12 months up to 12–24 months to better predict and forecast the future.

Bobcat adds three new loaders to its European portfolio. Our correspondent Chris McCullough reports

Designed for compactness and power, Bobcat has added three new loaders to its already bulky R-Series range of equipment.

Up first is the smallest loader in the range, the TL25.60, designed for tight spaces and powered by a 75 horsepower (56kW) Bobcat Stage V engine. The machine has a rated operating capacity of 2,500kg, offers a maximum lift height of 5.91m and a maximum reach of 3.31m.

For adaptability, this machine uses the Bob-Tach carriage, allowing it to utilise attachments designed for the Bobcat loader range.

“On top of this super compact format, the cab in the TL25.60 is the same as Bobcat’s top-of-therange R-Series 18m model, so customers can be certain they have the most spacious cab in the compact telehandler market,” Bobcat telescopics product manager EMEA Florian Hilbert says.

“A complementary version of the TL25.60 aimed at the agricultural market will be launched in 2023.”

Like all Bobcat telehandlers, the new engine hood has been designed to maximise visibility on the righthand side of the machine. Together with the new dashboard design in the cab and strong but slim cabin pillars,

this provides excellent unobstructed visibility for the operator.

The TL25.60 has a robust frame and boom for working in every possible environment. The shielded design provides protection for hydraulic and electrical components, including the pipes, harness and transmission and a steel plate protects the base of the machine. Like all Bobcat telehandlers, the TL25.60 has a box section layout and significant ground clearance.

S86 and T86

Delivering a higher engine and hydraulic output, the Bobcat S86 and T86 are the most powerful compact loaders the company has ever built.

Both machines use a well-proven Stage V compliant 3.4-litre Bobcat engine, producing 105hp (78kW) at 2,600rpm. Just like all R-Series loaders, the engine is mounted in-line with direct drive, which improves the cooling capacity of the engine and hydraulic components.

“The S86/T86 follow on from the very successful introduction of the smaller S66/T66 and S76/T76 loaders,” Bobcat loaders product manager John Chattaway says.

The T86 and S86 produce 105hp (78kW) at 2,600rpm

by setting new industry standards in every area, from in-cab comfort and safety to available power and attachment versatility. The S86/T86 take what is possible with compact loaders to a whole new level.”

One of the most exciting new aspects of the S86 and T86 is that both machines have, for the first time, a choice of three different auxiliary flow outputs.

There is a standard flow configuration providing 87L/min for applications such as load and carry, or where low hydraulic flow attachments are used.

Bobcat also offers two additional hydraulic performance functions using a new electronic displacement control pump: a high flow function giving 138L/min and a new, industry unique super flow function taking auxiliary flow to 159L/min.

The five-coupler block provides a flexible approach to running different attachments. From one common source, the operator can attach both standard or high flow-approved attachments to the smaller half-inch (1.27cm) quick couplers.

Both high flow and super flow options come integrated with Bobcat’s unique attachment control device (ACD). The S86 and T86 machines also have Power Bob-Tach Attachment systems as standard.

The Power Bob-Tach is an added comfort and productivity feature that allows some attachments to be connected and removed without the operator leaving the seat.

Cab comfort includes low noise and vibration levels inside the one-piece sealed and pressurised cab, together with the intuitive SJC controls as standard, and the informative displays.

The cab also has an HVAC system as standard and increased operator visibility, which can be further enhanced with the innovative clear side cab option.

These three new Bobcat loaders are as yet not planned for export to Australia.

Bigger and better

It’s all go at Olympus Loaders with a brand new range of wheel loaders – the FS Series – having just hit the tarmac. With a wide array of updates for improved efficiency and greater operator comfort, these are loaders that are designed to impress

As revealed exclusively by Earthmovers and Excavators magazine, Olympus Loaders has introduced a new wheel loader range to its product line up.

The first of the FS Series arrived at the business’ Loganholme headquarters in Queensland’s southeast in September, with the new machines being both larger and with more power than their predecessors.

Simon Collins, founder of machinery supplier Olympus Loaders, has been tight-lipped about their arrival , with no promotional material thus far on the bushiness’ website page, no brochure available for download, and no announcement made on its ever-present social media channels.

That’s why, when Collins – the

architect behind the brand’s rise around the country over the past several years – is asked about the machine, he doesn’t his mince words: “It’s f---- brand new.”

The new Olympus Loader FS Series range spans three models, ranging from the smaller seven-tonne FS270 to the nine-tonne FS300 and larger 12-tonne FS400.

The machines represent a new avenue for the brand. The FS Series replaces the old Farm Master and Yard Master ranges that have been staples of the Olympus line-up for years and are among the brand’s best-selling machines.

“What we did was we combined the two series together and put them into the one – the FS Series. You can call it the Farm Series,” Collins says.

“We’ve taken the best components

of both and utilised them into the three new machines.”

While some things on the FS models have remained the same as the outgoing Master loaders, there is a lot to like about the new features added on the latest iterations.

Operator comfort has been a big focus for Olympus, with a taller, bigger cabin that boasts more glass at the front for increased visibility.

Collins says on the smaller FS models the cabins are about 15 per cent bigger.

“The cabs on the smaller models were a little too cramped we felt, so we’ve opted for the bigger cabs,” he says.

“It’s all about operator comfort for those who are a bit taller or want a bit more leg room.”

Other additions are better access

points for maintenance, with a new lift-up bonnet providing better access to the engine. Upgrades to the engine hoods provide better airflow around the motor when the loader is functioning.

The pump systems have also been tweaked to improve the cycle times on the hydraulics, making them faster to improve productivity on-site.

Olympus also offers endless options for attachments on the machines, including pallet forks, hay spears, stick rakes, rear rippers and post rammers in addition to the many bucket options such as high tip, four-in-one and rock sieve options.

“Our customers rely on power, performance and reliability above all else. That’s why, with the new FS Series, we have introduced a new hydraulic system and faster cycling for enhanced productivity,” says Collins.

“We’ve also made it a priority to support operator comfort by adding a large cabin space with new, powerful air conditioning systems and upgraded windscreen for superior visibility.”

Along with the many new features, some elements from the other Olympus Loader models are also included on the FS Series, most notably the same heavy-duty subframe. Like the Yard and Farm Master models, the FS machines are all articulated, meaning the loaders can manoeuvre easily and access hard-to-reach areas.

As is the case with all Olympusbranded equipment, including its range of tractors, telehandlers and mini loaders, all machines are tested and modified to better cope with Australia’s more demanding conditions compared to Europe.

The inclusion of the FS Series into the Olympus line-up couldn’t have come at a better time either, with Collins’ dealer network expanding to better service customer demand.

There are three new dealerships in New South Wales, including Equipment and Service Co., which has experience in machinery dealing going back over 60 years. The additions mean Olympus now has a sizeable Australian footprint, with eight dealers located in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

“We just couldn’t cope with the demand. I had to appoint other dealerships to help cope with the demand because we couldn’t get enough gear out to our customers quick enough,” Collins says.

“They purchase their own machinery through us. It comes through us, and we still do the predelivery and things like that, but just having their own stock in their own areas makes it easier to meet the demand.”

The federal government’s Regional First Home Buyer Guarantee announced in September will provide a new opportunity for first home buyers in regional Australia to achieve their dreams of home ownership, says Housing Industry Association chief executive industry policy Kristin Brookfield.

From October 1, 10,000 places have been made available under the scheme, providing a pathway to home ownership for first time buyers struggling to meet the deposit requirements.

“It is universally recognised that saving for a deposit is the largest obstacle to achieving home ownership,” says Brookfield.

“The First Home Guarantee program supports first home buyers to buy a home with as little as five per cent deposit.

“Since 2019, the First Home Guarantee scheme has helped tens of thousands of Australians get into their first home.

“The new Guarantee supports eligible first home buyers living in regional areas to purchase a new or existing home in a regional area that they already call home.

“Regional Australia has endured so much in the last three years with a range of factors impacting people’s ability to save for their first home. This has been compounded by the general cost of living pressures that everyone in Australia is experiencing.

“HIA is pleased to see the federal government delivering on the commitment made earlier this year to expand the program with these 10,000 new places.

“Owning your own home is the best form of financial and personal security a person can have.”

Slow sales

Rising interest rates are impacting construction costs

Work under construction will act as a buffer for industry amid a slowdown in new home sales, according to the Housing Industry Association

Rising cash rates have caused a rip in new home sales and there will be little respite over the coming months, a report has found.

New home sales fell by 1.6 per cent in August according to the Housing Industry Association (HIA) New Home Sales report – with sales having already declined by 13.1 per cent in July.

The report found that new home sales across July and August were at their lowest point since the pandemic lockdowns in mid-2021, which restricted the movement of people throughout the country.

HIA economist Tom Devitt says the fall over the past two months may only be a precursor for what could continue in the coming months.

“Sales of new homes over the past two months are reflective of a slowing in the market as the impact of the rise in the cash rate hits households,” Devitt says.

“This rise in borrowing costs compounds the impact of the rise in the cost of construction.

“The full impact of recent and future rate increases will continue to flow through as an adverse

impact on the sale of new homes in coming months.

The New Home Sales report is produced monthly by the HIA and surveys the largest home builders in the country’s most populated five states – New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia.

Victoria led sales declines in August by dipping 15.2 per cent, while Queensland was also in the negative, declining by 1.8 per cent.

Bucking the trend was South Australia, where sales increased by 18.2 per cent, as well as NSW (+14.2 per cent) and Western Australia (+7.5 per cent).

“There remains a significant volume of work under construction and approved-but-not-yet-commenced that will provide a buffer for the industry and ensure building activity and demand for skilled trades remains exceptionally strong through the rest of 2022 and into 2023,” Devitt says.

“The concern remains that that the adverse impact of rising rates on the wider economy will be obscured by this volume of ongoing work and that the Reserve Bank of Australia goes too far, too soon.”

Funding boost

New facilities in regional WA to expand Cat dealer’s training capacity

New training facilities are set to be built for WesTrac at its Technology Training Centre in Western Australia after it received $1 million in state government funding.

The investment, which was part of the state government’s Futures Industry Development Find, will see the Cat dealer build new facilities at its Collie-based centre to further expand the training services offered.

With the development, the WesTrac Technology Training Centre will offer a broader range of courses, which is the only one of its kind outside of the United States.

The new facilities include virtual reality training as well as therapy rooms, reception, administration and a multipurpose room. New plant and machinery will also be purchased for the centre and communications infrastructure will be further enhanced.

WesTrac chief executive Jarvas Croome says the technology centre has already delivered courses to nearly 500 people and continues to provide an apprentice pathway and industry skills development in the state.

“Since launching in 2020, the WesTrac Technology Training Centre has delivered autonomous operations training courses to more than 450 people,” Croome says.

“To date, that has predominantly involved people working in the resources industry and needing to upskill. However, we have also run a pilot program in partnership with the not-for-profit Motivation Foundation, which supports young people to earn qualifications and secure full-time employment.”

TECHNOLOGY

Tech meets tradition

The use of 3D printing in sustainable construction in environments such as the outback is being investigated at UNSW Sydney

Dr Kate Dunn, from the UNSW Sydney School of Built Environment, is researching how robotics and digital fabrication, such as 3D printing, can lead to more sustainable construction.

“I want to build houses with robots and use materials from the [construction] site,” the architectural designer says.

“We’re looking at really traditional vernacular architecture [that uses local materials and traditional techniques], like mud-brick houses, adobe houses and sustainable materials like hemp.

“We’re researching how we can adapt some of those processes, but then optimise them using robotics and new technologies, such as largescale 3D printing.”

In 2021, UNSW Sydney and Melbourne-based 3D-printing company Luyten signed a memorandum of understanding to research a project that spans rural and regional New South Wales, the Moon and Mars.

One of the most significant obstacles for building in remote areas is the cost associated with transporting machinery and materials.

“3D printing building components using site-specific materials is one way to circumvent this,” says Dunn.

“Computer scripts can direct the 3D printing of complex architectural structures made from materials, such as clay and soil.”

The project has begun at Fowlers Gap Arid Zone Research Station in western NSW.

Following an initial site visit, Dr Dunn and her team have begun testing the site material for feasibility: “How sticky it is, the clay and sand composition, the shrinkage and drying times, how well it adheres to itself for building, how well it holds its own shape.

“The materials out there are great – so you could potentially harvest straight from site and then build onsite,” she says.

The research looks at the effect of introducing fibres, such as hemp, straw and bamboo, to optimise the material for construction.

Luyten is developing a compact 3D printer able to print large-scale complex geometric structures and cope with rough terrain.

Its lightweight construction and robotic technologies make it ideal for transportation to remote areas as well as its built-in capability to produce designs of up to nine by 12 metres. The printer unfolds and fabrication can be undertaken autonomously via satellite.

These material and design processes will prove invaluable for addressing housing issues in remote Indigenous and fly-in-fly-out communities, those living in extreme climates, and working in disaster zones, such as earthquake-prone areas, says Dunn.

Laing O’Rourke, BG&E, Downer, Georgiou Group, Foundation Engineering, Rob Carr and the WA Water Corporation were all recognised in this year’s Civil Contractors Federation WA Earth Awards recently

Transport infrastructure projects dominated the awards at the Civil Contractors Federation WA (CCF WA) 2022 Earth Awards in September.

Five of the seven category winners on the night were Main Roads WA projects, highlighting the state government’s transport infrastructure program in the civil earthmoving sector.

CCF WA chief executive Andy Graham says the bar for the Earth Awards was raised once again.

“Our experienced judges were so impressed, they believe this year represents a significant milestone in civil construction excellence,” Graham says.

Among the transport projects to collect awards was the Armadale Access Alliance, which won out in the category for projects that exceeded $150 million.

a ‘duck and dive alignment’, a new bridge over the Kwinana Freeway, new on and off-ramps and distributor roads for the freeway and upgrades to Armadale Road.

The project proved to be a challenge, with major enabling works required to build the three-span bridge across Kwinana Freeway while the western abutment works also required an anchored sheet pile wall to retain an existing high-pressure gas main – and lifting the bridge beam and

superstructure works were also difficult, CCF WA says.

Elsewhere, a multidisciplinary project involving the removal of the Denny Avenue level crossing, as well as the construction of a rail bridge and road underpass and other surrounding work, was rewarded in the $75–150 million project category.

The Denny Avenue Level Crossing Removal by civil works business Downer required a program change to bring forward the closure of the dangerous level crossing – something that was achieved four months ahead of schedule thanks to some innovative products.

The Georgiou Group claimed two wins on the night, one in the $30–75 million project category for the Karel Avenue Upgrade project in conjunction with Main Roads WA, and in the $10–30 million project category for the Kwinana Freeway Pedestrian and Cycle Path.

Other award winners on the night included Rob Carr and Water Corporation for the Gnangara Branch Sewer Section 2 project in the $5–10 million project category, and Foundation Engineering for its Multi-Unit Development in Scarborough in the $2 million and under project category.

MD Industries, a fast-growing electrical contracting business based in Dural, NSW, has added a new M-16U Huski Construction Equipment mini excavator to its fleet – based on the impressive performance of its longstanding Toyota 5SDK5 Huski skid steer loader.

MD Industries director and project manager Matt De Bono started his electrical trade 20 years ago and selfstarted his current business, which he describes as ‘multi-disciplinary’, 15 years ago.

“We are mainly electrical contractors but we cover a lot of fields and also do project work, providing entire customer solutions such as demolition, fit-outs, a whole range of works,” De Bono says.

“Because we cover so many areas, we can wrap it up as a package: do all the excavations, trenching, footings, the civil works, concreting and, of course, the electrical side of things. We also provide 24-hour everyday quick response.”

Given the regional nature of the network, MD Industries faced logistical challenges in terms of transporting a 2.5-tonne excavator to job sites.

“We go to some pretty far-flung places and it was just too big, heavy and expensive for towing,” De Bono says.

“We were hiring excavators in rural areas but, the further we went, it was getting harder and harder to find machines. We were travelling an hour

just to get a machine and then an hour back.”

The business needed something lighter and smaller, yet still powerful.

As a satisfied long-time Toyota Huski skid steer loader user, De Bono says his experiences with the 5SDK5 influenced his decision to buy the M-16U Huski mini excavator.

“When we started out, we didn’t have a skid steer loader. But as the business grew, we realised we needed those wide-ranging capabilities that the Huski 5SDK5 provides.

“It has helped us perform duties more efficiently. The Huski skid steer loader definitely makes life a lot easier for us and it’s fair to say that it has helped our business grow.

“Likewise, our business growth and the size of our recent electric car-charging station commitments really spurred the decision to get our new Huski mini excavator, making it quicker and easier to finish our projects.”

A key feature of the M-16U Huski mini excavator is its exceptional power. De Bono originally considered buying the smallest mini excavator in the Huski range, but after discussing this with Huski Construction Equipment area sales manager – construction Peter Bower it became clear the business could choose a higher-tonnage machine without compromising its transport requirements.

“We needed a smaller machine but one that could also meet our needs in

terms of power,” De Bono says.

“We looked at the smallest one in the range but, after speaking with Peter, we realised we could go up in size in order to allow for it doing that bit more, without it affecting our transport.

“The new 1.6-tonne Huski is in a different class to our larger machine but, for the size of it, it is very powerful and more so than the 1.6-tonne equivalent from another brand. It performs very well, having excellent break-out force for its size.”

De Bono optioned the M-16U Huski mini excavator with a quick hitch for attachments, which he says is handy, adding that the zero tail-swing is also a nice feature.

MD Industries hasn’t had its new Huski mini excavator for long, yet first impressions are positive.

“The Huski mini excavator definitely feels smooth to operate,” De Bono says.

“And it’s going to give us access to tighter sites because of the smaller size.

“As we expand, we will definitely be adding more Huski and Toyota equipment to our fleet – most likely a forklift. We use the Huski skid steer loader like a forklift but obviously it doesn’t have the same full functionality.”

Working smart

It’s always exciting when a new machine reaches our soil, and this is no exception. The EC530E excavator from Volvo provides the digging force and performance of a 60-tonne machine but, thanks to some innovative design updates, comes packed in just 50 tonnes of excavator.

With CJD Equipment having delivered one to the east coast and one to the west, national product manager Hayden Grant says there is so much interest in the EC530E they will probably get snapped up soon.

“It’s a productive machine and uses less fuel to achieve this,” he says, with the EC530E built for quarrying, bulk mass excavation and heavy duty digging.

“Pretty much anywhere you need a 50 to 60 tonne-class excavator – it can move you tonnes per hour, that’s what they are made for.”

Productivity boost

Volvo says that bringing the

EC530E into a fleet can help optimise fleet use by up to 20 per cent, with fewer passes required. At the core of this productivity gain is the introduction of Volvo’s next generation hydraulic system –Independent Metering Valve Technology (IMVT).

“The whole design around this new machine is based around the main control valve,” Grant says.

“This next generation electrohydraulic system IMVT means an up to 25 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency, pump optimisation, low engine RPM – this is this is the crux of it all.

“The Volvo EC530E has moved away from your traditional main control valve, which use large spools and there are a lot of moving parts. Now it’s controlled by a series of valves, which are electronically controlled and are metered from these independent metering valves. It’s good. It’s a bit of a first I think.”

Volvo says the IMVT provides a

greater level of control, contributing to less fuel used and allowing the machine to punch above its weight. Grant says that this is just the first of a set of new features that the EC530E contains.

“Along with the electronic control valve you’ve got creep mode and a motion priority function, so you can speed up your boom and give more priority to your boom and less to your slew. So, you can adjust the machine to suit the operation. It can then go to a different part of the quarry and start doing something else, so you can use more boom up for example.”

Safety and operation

Alongside the option of a 360-degree camera, operator visibility has been improved through the reduction of the A pillars, which is standard across all Volvo E-series cab designs.

and filtered cab has heating and air conditioning provided through 14 vents, while the operator’s seat has nine different adjustments and a seatbelt for operator comfort and safety.

Accessibility has been improved through the use of fold-down walkways with high vis rails and side entry to the machine.

“It’s quite a high machine and entry [on previous excavators] used to face forward, so now it’s on the side it’s actually a lot easier to climb up and down,” Grant says.

As an optional package, Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system provides the operator data on fuel consumption, location and usage reports, and on board weighing function with co-pilot. Fuel efficiency reports can help identify areas where efficiency improvements can be made at the site, fleet or individual machine level.

A stand-out feature for operators, says Grant, will be the boom and arm bounce reduction feature, to reduce juddering in the cab.

“With large diggers, especially electronically-controlled digger, if you let go of the handle on an aggressive boom up or boom down, stick in stick out, you can get a lot of boom or arm bounce, and that can be quite uncomfortable on a large machine,” he says.

“There’s a function within this machine that reduces the aggressiveness of that bounce by metering how much the oil backs off, so it doesn’t shut the function off directly, it actually modulates it to make it smooth. The operator has more control – they can adjust the boom down speed.”

The cab is supported on hydraulic dampening mounts to reduce shock and vibration, as well as noise levels inside.

“The machine also has creep mode, so if the machine is doing a lot of fine work like pipe laying where you need smooth control of

the tracks and smooth control of the hydraulics you get that there’s no sudden movement. Then there’s also an option for comfort drive control, where you steer from the joysticks, not the pedals.”

The stats

Powering the EC530E is a sixcylinder Volvo D13J engine providing 461 horsepower (339kW) with a maximum torque of 2,200Nm@1,300rpm, with Volvo saying that this is the highest engine power of its class.

Each track is powered by an automatic two-speed shift travel motor with a maximum low travel speed of 3.5km/h and a maximum high travel speed of 5.4km/h.

The boom and arm bounce reduction feature makes operation more comfortable

Depending on the boom used, maximum digging reach ranges from 10.9m to 12.68m, digging depth from 6.45m to 8.24m and dumping height from 7.1m to 7.8m.

Inside the cab there is a radio with an MP3 and USB jack with Bluetooth, cup holders, large storage area, sun screens, rain shield, rear and side view cameras and a master key.

Alongside the range of Volvo buckets available, the machine has the auxiliary piping already in place to power hydraulic attachments such as breakers, thumbs, shears, grapples, etc.

When asked what the main standout feature for an operator would be when taking on the EC530E, Grant says it’s this machine’s ability to adapt to the situation at hand, which makes it a flexible addition to a fleet.

“The speed in the flexibility of the hydraulics and being able to change the priority function to match what the operator’s doing at the time really is key,” he says.

“I think the EC530E will be a good option for operators, especially once they fully utilise all the cool functions of it.”

Smashing support

Australia will enter its third period of La Niña weather conditions in 2022–23 –bringing with it the unusually high rainfall that has been a boon to crops and a curse for those in flood-prone areas.

These conditions have been adding to the order book of Greg Taylor, the owner of Ironbark Demolition, supplementing a schedule that was already filling up, following a recent spate of infrastructure investment.

Based in the Queensland town of Boonah, Taylor and his team have found themselves taking on a series of civil infrastructure demolition projects lately, of which “a very, very high percentage is bridges”.

“It’s not a rule or anything, it just seems to be the way it is… we do very little private residence work and almost no developers,” he says.

“We would be lucky to do one

building a year, and if we do do a building, it will be for a local council or similar. It’s just the way it happens.”

This bridge specialisation has taken Ironbark as far north as Cooktown and Longreach in Queensland, and south to Broken Hill and Canberra, and seen it work on projects in the affluent Isle of Capri in Surfers Paradise and the major Inland Rail Project across inland NSW.

Typically, Taylor explains, Ironbark will be a subcontractor for the builder of a bridge for either Transport for New South Wales or TMR or local councils in Queensland.

“We’ve just come back from a project at Maryborough – an upgrade of about 30km of highway – which includes the replacement of two bridges… so we’ve been asked to come in and take away the two old ones.”

For projects where the bridge only

spans a small amount of water, there’s the option of diverting the water flow while the bridge is demolished – with Ironbark even developing a separate water passage for fish to use in one memorable project.

“For another project we were able to build a coffer dam – so we had water upstream and downstream, but we were actually able to pump it dry,” Taylor says.

“What that allows us to do in rough terms is to knock that bridge down… we use our excavators… it could be a hammer, a pulveriser or a combination and we break that bridge down to rubble.

“The other ones we do a lot of, and we probably specialise in, is cut and lift, because we’re either over a tidal river, or another highway or another railway line where you simply can’t drop the bridge onto other infrastructure or into the water.”

This situation involves cranes and

other heavy lifting infrastructure –requiring excavators to remove the footings or take concrete or other material from the bridge and trucks that will take it away for processing.

To carry out this work, Ironbark uses a fleet of four Hyundai excavators, the 17 and 18-tonne R160LC-7 and R160LC-9, and the 22tonne R210-9 and HX220L.

Taylor says the 17 and 18-tonne excavators are ideal for the delicate work of removing timber and steel structures from bridges ahead of their demolition.

He praises the ability of the excavators to work in a confined space, either while sitting on a suspended slab or while being right up against water, mangroves, or other unstable ground.

“A lot of their work is with rotating grapples… the bigger ones are more on the concrete processing side of it.”

Taylor bought the first of these units

12 years ago, saying at the time that he had insisted the excavator tracks have 600 plates, rather than the more common 500.

“Because we work in the mud all the time and 600 plates gives you less ground pressure per square inch… it makes a massive difference on what we do,” he says.

Taylor says it was those plates that first impressed him, as he observed another Hyundai user piloting his excavator along the sides of a rail track where they had been working.

“The guy walked hundreds and hundreds of kilometres and the running gear was still in good condition. That’s what prompted it,” he says.

“And you know, my 12-year-old machine – the running gear is just fantastic. I’d say we work in the worst conditions – sand, mud… and I think we’re on the extreme with everything else.

Porter Group would come out on Sundays and service it for me, and I never lost a day’s downtime in the whole 290 days I was there.

“They haven’t got massive hours on them, but the hours that they have done have been very hard hours.

“They handle the load, the vibration, the shock loads from the hammers and all that sort of thing. I think they deal with that really well.”

Adding to this was the fact that this first Hyundai was put to work on the Hornibrook Bridge, which spans 2.7km over salt water between the Brisbane suburbs of Sandgate and Redcliffe.

“I particularly bought it new and the grapple new for the Hornibrook Bridge, which was the longest hardwood timber road bridge in the southern hemisphere.

“That machine did 2,000 hours in one year and it never came off the bridge. Porter Group would come out on Sundays and service it for me, and I never lost a day’s downtime in the whole 290 days I was there,” he says.

dedication to service, reflecting that its wide network of repair staff saw a call to the Brisbane office mean a service team could meet him on site at Narrabri in NSW.

“We’ve had other projects too, rail projects where you do rail shutdowns on weekends where you can’t fail, and they’ve been good for us,” he says.

“If I rang up and said I don’t think I’m getting enough oil flow for a saw or something, Porter Group will talk me through it on the computer and get it sorted quickly. It’s really good.”

That service assistance extends to Porter’s range of Furukawa rock breakers, which Taylor uses on a regular basis for his demolition work.

“They are a brilliant hammer and I actually get them regularly regassed and serviced. I’ve had a guy in my workshop for probably eight days now on one attachment on the pulveriser just rebuilding,” he says.

“We rebuild the teeth, hard face them so you know it’s up to scratch ready for the next job. We take a spare moil everywhere we go.

“I can’t say I’ve broken a moil yet on those Furukawas. But we do carry a spare because we can’t fail on rail jobs.”

The moil, the part of the hammer that impacts the ground, can also be recut to a point, Taylor says – and the pointier the better.

“I’ve got two different sizes of those hammers, I thoroughly recommend them,” he says.

This ability to avoid shutdowns in work must be getting noticed, because Ironbark is now pricing jobs two years ahead of schedule work start.

It means that those excavators will soon be on the road again.

“We’ve probably got some of the most travelled excavators in the country, I would think,” Taylor says.

It’s all go at Tamworth’s Phil Hunt Parts, especially since the new and used parts supplier started stocking John Deere construction equipment parts several years ago.

“The John Deere parts have kept us busy.” says Phil Hunt Parts owner Brendan Hunt.

“We’ve worked very hard at stocking as many John Deere machines as we can. We’ve got a significant number of John Deere graders already dismantled, and just recently we purchased a brand-new John Deere grader for the dry hire component of our business.

“What we’re saying is that we believe in the John Deere product so much that we’re prepared to invest our own hard-earned money on a brand new grader – we’re putting our money, where our mouth is.”

This expansion of the business into offering machinery for hire has been a slow burn over the past two years, with this division operating under the name of Hunt Plant Hire. Hunt says

that the purchase of the new grader is another step towards developing this further.

“We’re getting ourselves in a position to take on local government work,” Hunt says.

“We have a good relationship with our local council and have helped them with parts for their John Deere graders in the past. There’s potential for us to provide a grader on hire whenever they pull one into the workshop for maintenance, or their workload demands an extra grader.”

Alongside the John Deere parts, the business also supplies parts from a range of other manufacturers, including Allis-Chalmers, Fiat, Hanomag, Clark, MF Industrial and Galion.

“We specialise in Champion grader parts as well, and we’ve now secured access to genuine and aftermarket new parts,” Hunt says.

“The Champion graders started out as DRMCo. We’ve wrecked a dozen DRMCo graders here and they were

bought out by Champion. Champion were then bought out by Volvo. So, we now specialise in all three of those brands, particularly the grader side of things.”

Hunt says that as graders become more popular, he’s seeing increasing numbers being operated by small contractors or farmers.

“Parts have traditionally been very hard to get for DRMCo and Champion graders,” he says.

“We like to think that we do a pretty good job of supplying a new and used option. And we’re the only business in Australia that does that.”

With continuing heavy rainfall and flooding affecting large parts of NSW, including in the regions surrounding Phil Hunt Parts, he says graders are in high demand, fixing damaged roads once the waters recede.

“When it’s this wet, tracks and roadways are always the first hit,” he says.

“As you can imagine, the second it dries up, everybody’s in their graders trying to tidy up roads so they can gain access again. Any time there’s rain around, graders are hot to trot and we’re in a position to cater for any machine breakdowns that may occur.”

In terms of having stock on hand, there is a high demand for used parts currently, as supply chains for new stock continue to suffer delays. Hunt says Phil Hunt Parts has been buying heavily and wrecking a large number of machines to keep its supplies high.

“Importing new stock and the lack of new stock worldwide on the back of COVID, has been challenging,” Hunt says.

“Because we had such a huge volume of stock here pre-COVID, we’ve been able to service our customers without a hitch. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how well we’ve coped and pleased our customers haven’t had to suffer long waits on incoming overseas parts, as others have had to.”

Komatsu’s machinery is built tough – but what good is toughness without a skilled operator? Komatsu dozer product manager Pat Munro explains how iMC 2.0 is helping reshape operator training for a new generation

Komatsu’s machinery has a reputation for toughing it out.

One of the Japanese machinery company’s earliest dozers – the Komatsu-branded T40 – made its unconventional journey to Australian shores via several decades at the bottom of the ocean, where it was lost following the Second World War. After being recovered by an Australian scrap metal company,

the dozer was purchased by two Sydney farmers and resurrected with a simple oil change and some new electrical components.

The machine was acquired by Komatsu in 1979 and returned to Japan, where it was fully restored to its original specifications. It now remains proudly on display at the company’s training institute in Dhito, Shizuoka Prefecture.

A modern all-rounder

The Komatsu D65EXi-18 dozer –one of the T40’s modern-day descendants – shows that through decades of evolution, innovation and refinement, toughness still runs deep in Komatsu’s DNA.

Komatsu’s Pat Munro says the machine exemplifies the kind of durability on which the company has built its legacy.

“I’ve been with Komatsu for 19 years, and it’s the reliability of the product that’s kept me here,” Munro says.

“It’s easy to represent a product that you really believe in, and Komatsu have never let me down.”

The 22-tonne D65EXi-18 dozer, with its external push arms and semi-U blade, is tough enough for bulk earthmoving and ripping, but light enough to make it easily transportable. Munro says this sweet spot has made the machine a popular choice for general construction and civil infrastructure.

“This class of machine makes up around 70 per cent of the total construction market,” he says.

“They’re very easy to move around on floats from job to job. The D65EXi-18 is a really great general tool. As well as construction and civil works, it’ll handle stockpile ripping, tree clearing and agricultural work without trouble.”

The D65EXi-18 is powered by a Tier 4 Final certified Komatsu SAA6D114E-6 engine, which balances performance with lower fuel consumption.

The Komatsu Parallel Link Undercarriage System (PLUS) comes standard, which ensures high durability and extended service life thanks to its rotary bushing. The integrated rollover protection system cab provides peace of mind for operators, while fatigue is minimised by low noise levels and cab damper mounts for vibration absorption.

Munro says the D65EXi-18 demonstrates the company’s dedication to the comfort of its operators.

“Komatsu over the years have spent millions on operator comfort across all their equipment,” he says.

“The designers and engineers in Japan are always desperate to hear feedback from operators –good and bad – to help improve their products.

“They want to hear from the people that sit in these cabins for hours every day – because they know it can be the simple little things that make all the difference to operators.”

Smart productivity

The D65EXi-18 is one of the first dozers in Australia to feature Komatsu’s new Intelligent Machine Control (iMC) 2.0 – an automated system designed to enhance machine efficiency, jobsite productivity and ease of operation.

Munro says iMC 2.0 introduces a range of upgrades and enhancements to the original iMC feature set that takes smart automation to the next level.

The factory-integrated twin antenna GPS system allows operators and fleet managers to track their position precisely – without having to worry about external antennas or cabling.

Munro says several new smart automation features substantially improve dozing operations from bulk earthworks to finish grade work.

“Lift Layer Control and Tilt Steering Control are two new features that can really make a huge difference to productivity,” he says.

Lift Layer Control is used to automatically spread fill material from existing areas and measure the terrain as it tracks to plan the next pass, while Tilt Steering Control reduces the need for constant operator corrections by automatically tilting the blade to maintain straightline travel.

“The Quick Surface Creation feature is also particularly good if they’re just pushing a road out on a particular slope,” Munro says.

“Once that’s initially set up in the cabin, the operator can just park the dozer, put the blade on the ground, push one button, and it’ll run that grade out for as far as they want.”

All iMC 2.0 features also make good use of the factory-installed touchscreen, which provides operators with a clear indication of how they are tracking relative to a design. Munro says it’s a package of features that can make a good operator even better, reducing fatigue while enhancing accuracy.

“What’s perhaps even more valuable about the technology, is less experienced operator can be skilled up very quickly with a reasonably small amount of training,” he says.

“So, you can have operators meeting designs on a particular job much sooner.”

Closing gaps

Munro says this means iMC 2.0-equipped machines such as the D65EXi-18 can essentially be used to complement ongoing training.

“The industry is struggling with a lack of new skilled operators coming through to replace the experienced ones who are retiring,” he says.

“The other problem we’re seeing is companies poaching good operators off each other, rather than taking the time to teach and upskill.”

This is causing gaps in the skilled workforce, both locally and globally.

Komatsu’s designers and engineers are always seeking feedback on operator comfort and ease of operation

On the flipside, Munro says this gives equipment manufacturers such as Komatsu the chance to step up to the plate.

“I think younger generations have a bit of a different mindset, different skills and interests –they’re much more engaged with technology,” he says.

“Our iMC 2.0 technology can help assist fleet owners in training new operators that want to learn. Not only about operating, but also in understanding the broader picture of how designs and work sites function.”

Munro says the feedback from customers has been encouraging, and he’s excited to hear the realworld benefits of iMC 2.0 straight from the job site.

“One customer has a young operator on site who hasn’t been operating bulldozers for very long. But he’s been really embracing this new technology and wants to understand more about how it works,” he says.

“He’s seeing the benefits – it’s making him look like a much more experienced operator. It means he’s able to do jobs once, and not have to come back and redo work.”

In 2015 the Queensland Government announced that it would start a renewable energy boom, which would reduce emissions, create new jobs and diversify the economy by establishing a target of 50 per cent renewable energy by 2050. As of June 2022, a 21.4 per cent renewable target has been reached.

Part of this plan is to establish a hydrogen manufacturing industry. Hydrogen would be used to decarbonise the transport sector and be used as an energy export medium both interstate and overseas.

Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), in conjunction with CSIRO, recently presented a report on the skills demand to achieve these targets. The report had three key findings:

1. On average $14 billion of invest ment will be required each year between 2021 and 2050.

2. 2 7,000 additional construction jobs will be created over and above the current demand.

3. T he bulk of the investment and jobs will be in regional areas. It was clear from this report that the investment had to come from the private sector. The additional labour and skilling required was a significant challenge based on the current pressures the industry is facing. The regions are also suffering from housing shortages, supply chain shortages and delays, causing volatility, which is unpredictable and unmanageable.

expected that this trend will continue.

The government quoted Ernst & Young modelling, saying that its energy plan will support 100,000 jobs.

This plan needs to be underpinned by well-planned strategies at a national level. The additional people who need to be brought into Australia and be housed and skilled is significant. The CSQ report highlighted the challenges prior to this announcement. The federal government’s Job and Skills Summit was conducted prior to this announcement, as was the state government’s Workforce Summit.

The new targets put significant strain on our industry and unless a national strategy addressing the number of appropriately skilled people are brought into the country and supported with skilling to Australian standards, our industry will be put under further strain to deliver the current forecasted civil programs.

and 80 per cent by 2035, delivering a 50 per cent reduction in electricity related emissions by 2030 and a 90 per cent reduction in electricityrelated emissions by 2036. This will be achieved through more wind and solar generation, pump hydro power generation and an increase in hydrogen use.

There is an expectation of worker transition from coal to renewables. This doesn’t stack up for a couple of reasons.

The government has committed to keeping coal fired power stations operational as a backup until its renewables plan is at a stage to take the load. Coal is still a major income source for the government. Whether it is thermal or metallurgical coal, both sources will continue to be mined and exported during this transition and beyond. The number of workers shifting industries will be minimal during the transition.

Mining will always play a critical part in Australia’s economy and the projected expansion of mining generally in Australia will soak up any displaced jobs from coal mining. Mining labour growth projections are at 5.9 per cent until 2026 and it is

A concern is the general level of debt of all governments and the increasing cost of living and cost of business pressures. The current announcement of the Queensland government does little to address these.

Although the Queensland Government is forecasting the cost of energy to decrease, I have a fundamental concern that any energy plan needs to ensure that consumers are buying electricity at the lowest possible price. Whilst pumped hydro is technically sound, its business case relies on buying surplus cheap energy to pump water to a higher level, to then use gravity to produce electricity at a higher cost to sell to consumers.

The cheapest way of pumping water to a higher level is to exploit evaporation and transpiration.

Whilst it seems the Queensland government is in favour of water storage for pumped hydro, I think a better outcome is to build dams that can produce hydroelectricity as well as the added benefit of flood mitigation, growth in agriculture, tourism and security of drinking water.

This solution will provide a better future for Australia. It provides renewable energy, an opportunity for our industry and catalyses sustainable job growth into the future.

Arjes is teaming up with Tricon Equipment to supply its recycling shredders nationwide, with the recycling of waste a key focus for both

A mere 58.3 kilometres south west from the geographical centre of Germany lies the small town of Leimbach.

The town is home to just 1,725 people and boasts a Wikipedia page reading just one line long, but Leimbach is making headlines for other reasons – it is also home of innovative recycling equipment manufacturer Arjes.

Since its formation in 2007, Arjes made a name for itself in the recycling world and is now planning to expand its footprint throughout Australia, having established a distribution agreement with Tricon Equipment.

Under the deal, Tricon will distribute the entire product range of Arjes equipment, which includes both diesel and electric-powered recycling shredders, around the country.

While Arjes-branded equipment has had a presence in Australia across the past few years, Tricon Equipment plans for the brand to be more pronounced Down Under, with strong growth for the business in the future.

Tricon Equipment territory manager for Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia Paul Knauer says the deal will extend the brand’s reach within Australia and helps meet customer appetite for such equipment.

“Our client base has been asking for a solution in a recycling equipment

range to value-add to their existing business models to the reuse of otherwise waste into landfill,” Knauer says.

“Tricon’s equipment range lineup incorporates a key focus into the recycling processing category to further enhance its capabilities into the ever-growing market of recycling.”

According to figures from the Bureau of International Recycling, recycled materials can save more than 700 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year and cover 40 per cent of the world’s demands for raw materials.

In the case of the construction industry, which is one of the most resource-intensive industries in the world, Arjes argues recycled waste –including scrap metal, wood waste, biomass, asphalt and concrete – can all be processed and repurposed in other building materials for projects such as road construction, earthworks and landfill construction.

Knauer says Tricon Equipment holds a similar vision when it comes to recycled materials, and the aligned business strategy will support both brands across the country.

“This is the main reason why we have taken on the Arjes product line up as the Australian distributor, due to our business strategy to reach out to our loyal customer base to continue the growth of recyclables back into the construction industry,” he says.

The Impaktor shredder is Arjes’ most popular machine, which is designed for operators in the construction and demolition industry. The compact shredder has a moderate throughout of material, with up to 100 tonnes per hour for mixed mineral materials, up to 80t/h for concrete or asphalt, 20t/h for biomass and 15t/h for waste and plastics.

After making its debut at the bauma trade show in 2016, the Impaktor range, which received an updated 250 Evo version in 2018, has been a popular addition throughout Europe, with over 1,000 units sold as of February this year.

Arjes’ intermediate shredder offering comes in the form of the Ekomaxx range, which focuses on composting and wood processing, as well as commercial and domestic waste.

The Ekomaxx machines feature an over belt magnet and track system as standard and has a high throughput of material with up to 40t/h of waste wood, 100t/h of biomass, and 25t/h of waste and plastics.

The Titan is Arjes’ heavy-duty offering and provides users with maximum throughout rates for applications such as construction and material waste, biomass and green waste, stem wood and roots, and scrap metal and cars.

All Arjes products can be manoeuvred via a SCU plug-andplay controls, which includes remote control.

Knauer says the range will compliment Tricon Equipment’s existing waste and recycling products, which includes several MDL trommels and the Lippmann MX blending plant.

of different componentry on the market,” Einam says.

In the buckets, motors are placed inside the frame to avoid damage caused by external material, while lubrication inside the chain boxes ensures a long lifetime for the transmission.

The buckets screen material without back-and-forth rotation to produce a homogenous end product, even with wet materials. Both the D Series and DL Series feature Allu’s TS drum, which is available in 16mm or 25mm options as well as a stabilising drum that is 50mm for the DL Series or 25, 40 or 60mm on the D Series.

Given its flexibility in rural environments, Einam talks of the popularity of the Allu Transformer range within the pipeline industry in Australia. If a pipeline were to be built between Dalby and Gladstone – an area spanning 478km – each joint in the line would require a guaranteed size of material to put back in the trenches, he explains.

“You can’t just push sticks and things back into the trench, they

have to be screened,” he says.

“And because the Transformer buckets are an on-site screening bucket, you just hook it up to one machine. They’re very successful in the pipeline industry in Australia. And that’s where the majority of our buckets go, into that particular field.”

But while the Allu Transformer series is already making progress in the pipeline sector in Australia, Einam is hopeful of expanding the brand’s footprint in civil construction as a method to quickly repurpose material onsite.

By having an Allu Transformer bucket available at the ready, civil workers wouldn’t have to move material offsite to be screened before hauling it back and reusing it. Instead, the processing bucket can screen the material right there.

“The push that we have here is into the civil construction and earthmoving industry, where they can repurpose material on site,” Einam says.

“They don’t have to truck it off, truck it back, or bring fixed plant on,

which is expensive. They can quickly repurpose material. They might only do a week’s work on one site and then they can move to the next site.

“And they save a lot of money by not transporting material. Dump fees and transport costs are another big cost today on job sites.”

Finlay slow speed shredders take the hassle out of processing mixed waste

Terex Ecotec’s slow speed shredders, available from Australian distributor Finlay, are designed and purposebuilt for heavy duty shredding applications, handling everything from wood waste, pallets, cable drums, paper rolls, compost, mattresses, tyres and roots to domestic and industrial bulky waste.

“Slow speed shredders are really for doing a primary shred of green waste and C&D [construction and demolition] waste recycling,” Finlay manager Ronnie Bustard says.

“They’re designed to self-protect themselves from doing damage. Whereas high speed shredders can be damaged when trying to process contamination like uncrushables, these machines will stop and reverse without doing themselves damage.”

When processing domestic waste for example, mattresses springs and fabric can wrap around the shafts, causing downtime to the machine.

“With our slow speed shredders, we have independent shaft drives so we can run them at different settings, and they can reverse and clean to prevent the build-up of blockages from cabling, plastic bags, that sort of thing,” Bustard says.

Bustard says clients range from local councils and contractors to landfill businesses, with the ability to recover steel from waste being a major benefit.

“You can put the waste through and the magnets pull out the steel,

preventing it from going to landfill,” he explains.

Finlay currently offers three models of Terex Ecotec shredder: the twin-shaft 440 horsepower (330kW) TDS-820 and 770hp (574kW) TDS-825 models and the single-shaft 493hp (368kW) TTS-390.

They come with a high-capacity feed hopper and robust undercarriage for difficult terrain. Discharge height is hydraulically controlled and a user-friendly display offers simple operation and diagnostics information.

High speed grinding

For those looking for a high-speed grinder, Bustard says a new product is just around the corner for Finlay.

“Very soon we’re bringing in our new high speed grinder, the TBG630, which is a high speed swinging hammer,” he says.

“We expect to have the first on in Australia in November. That machine’s already been sold and we have another one arriving in December.”

The TBG630, which has a 690hp (515kW) engine, is designed for primarily handling green waste. The open-fronted feeder uses heavy duty drag chains, a powerful feed wheel and an unrestricted feeder design to effectively utilise the swinging hammer rotor. This rotor comes with a wide selection of hammer designs and customisable screens to achieve different end product specifications.

“The swinging hammer design means it can handle a certain level of contaminants in the material being processed,” Bustard says.

“It produces a much smaller particle size than the other shredders, so it’ll be used for composting and biomass –that sort of thing.”

A discharge height of 5.1m maximises stockpile capacity and allows loader operators to easily remove processed material.

Growing Solutions Australia has enjoyed a welcome bonus after becoming a customer of Toyota Material Handling Australia for the first time

Growing Solutions Australia, based in Cabarlah, just north of Toowoomba in Queensland, recently purchased a new Toyota 8FG18 counterbalance forklift from Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA).

However, the nursery’s owner Jamie Currie is now also the proud owner of a new LHE150 electric pallet jack after winning TMHA’s Growers Prize Giveaway.

“We don’t win a lot of things, but it was brilliant to get the phone call,” says Currie.

“Sometimes you’re just happy with the meat tray at the pub, but this time we won an electric pallet jack which is great!”

Having started Growing Solutions Australia five years ago with his wife, Currie had previously been using an old forklift that came with the Cabarlah nursery when he purchased it. However, the need arose for a replacement.

“One of my mates who also owns a forklift bought it through the same salesman, Max Reindl,” Currie says.

“Knowing that a colleague also purchased one through Max, knowing that it was a Toyota and knowing the Toyota comes with all these different benefits and its reputation, it was a simple decision for me.”

Having moved from an older competitor’s forklift, Currie says the

Toyota 8FG18 machine offers a significant step up in features and usability, making for a simple-tooperate machine.

“I’d just say that from the machine that I’ve moved from, from a business owner’s point of view, there’s obviously the safety features, and it’s just a very smooth and easy machine to operate.”

The prize of the LHE150 electric pallet jack was an added bonus as it features a compact design perfect for light applications, and a maintenance free lithium-ion battery for fast charging.

When asked if he would recommend TMHA to others in the industry, he didn’t hesitate to say that he would “100 per cent” encourage others to jump on board.

“My response is very clichéd but if you look at people sharing their positive experiences in the media, mine is pretty much the same,” he says.

“From making contact with the rep, to the rep coming out and responding straight away, to delivering and having the machine, it was all made very simple.

“And with the quality of the product –in my opinion, if I compare it to the quality of other products out there, it was a no-brainer for me to go with Toyota.”

Precision decision

Sandvik has signed and completed an agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the equity interests in the Switzerland-based Sphinx Tools Ltd and its wholly owned subsidiary P. Rieger Werkzeugfabrik AG.

Sphinx Tools’ offering primarily consists of precision solid round tools (micro tools) and surgical cutting tools. The customers are mainly within the automotive, aerospace and medical segments. The company will be reported within Sandvik Coromant – a division within Sandvik Manufacturing and Machining Solutions.

“With the acquisition of Sphinx Tools we continue to execute on our shift to growth strategy,” CEO and president of Sandvik Stefan Widing says.

“Strengthening our position in round tools is one strategic priority for our machining solutions business and with this acquisition we will expand our product portfolio in the high growth area of micro tools.”

Sphinx Tools enhances Sandvik Coromant’s product offering within solid round tools and is an established player in the adjacent surgical cutting tools market. The company is present in Europe with three production sites in Switzerland and has global distribution.

“The acquisition of Sphinx Tools fits very well with our strategy to strengthen our position in round tools. With Sphinx Tools we will have the opportunity to take a global leading position in micro tools, a premium niche of round tools, expand our product portfolio and enter an adjacent area of surgical tools. We are very pleased to welcome Sphinx Tools to the Group,” president of Sandvik Machining Solutions Nadine Crauwels says.

Sphinx Tools was founded in 1994, has around 115 employees and is based in Switzerland. In 2021, the company generated revenues of approximately 292 MSEK. The EBITA margin is neutral to Sandvik Manufacturing and Machining Solutions. Impact on Sandvik’s earnings per share will be limited, yet slightly positive. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
