Simex has released its widest self-levelling planer yet – the PL2000 – which will reach Australia later in the year
Open wide
Italian manufacturer Simex recently launched the world’s largest road cold planer for compact loaders, the new PL2000.
Equipped with a 2,000mm-wide milling drum, this planer is the largest currently available on the market.
Designed for milling deteriorated surfaces for resurfacing, operators can remove the entire layer of asphalt or cement in preparation for trenching

or mill deteriorated sections for later resurfacing and create a sustainable outcome by reusing milled material for backfilling trenches.
The PL2000 is designed to be mounted on the new-generation SSL and has the following features:
• independent depth adjustment to ensure flat surfaces
• a hydraulic side shift for milling flush to the walls or pavements
• a floating transverse tilt that allows the operator to keep the planer aligned to the road surface even when the base machine is not parallel to the ground
• a self-leveling system, which

Ute beauty
Ram has debuted a new electric ute offering that it hopes will ‘redefine the pickup segment once again’
The Ram 1500 Revolution batteryelectronic vehicle (BEV) concept was unveiled at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas in late January.
The concept ute not only demonstrates the company’s commitment within the electric vehicle sector but is also loaded with advanced technology systems and features that will become a mainstay in Ram vehicles in the future.
“The Ram 1500 Revolution BEV concept is our clearest signal yet that we’re on the precipice of something extraordinary at Ram and points directly to where we’re going on our electrified journey,” Ram chief executive Mike Koval Jr says.
“At Ram, we’ve redefined what pickup trucks can be and will do so again by pushing past what competitors are offering by delivering the best electric pickups on the market.”
Currently scheduled to enter production in 2024, the 1500 Revolution BEV is an all-wheel-drive vehicle powered by two electric drive module batteries, which are positioned toward the front and rear of the vehicle.
Ram engineers have designed the ute to have greater cabin length and a more spacious interior, which, along with the smaller battery size also allows for more cargo volume.
Outside of the ute, an ultra-modern
exterior design has been updated, which Ram says will modernise the future of its utes, while an all-new face includes animated and modernised Ram badging and full LED ‘tuning fork’ headlight display.
Other innovations include a new Ram feature – third row jump seats. The powered mid-gate features mounted jump seats with a removable lower section for placement in the bed or outside the vehicle, the manufacturer says.
A vehicle personal assistant – an artificial intelligence system – is also included, meaning drivers can control various aspects of the vehicle including music control and window movement. Similarly, shadow mode allows the vehicle to automatically follow the driver walking ahead of the vehicle. Ram says this function can be useful in situations where the driver needs to move a short distance and doesn’t want to get back in the ute.
“The Ram Revolution represents several important things to the Ram brand,” Koval Jr adds.
“Of course, it’s our new Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept that serves as a roadmap to our electrified future.
“Yet, Ram Revolution is also our philosophy as we redefine the pickup segment, with a steady drumbeat of announcements and initiatives as we embark on our electrified journey.”
FORESTRY
FAE has released the BL Max blade for the BL5/EX forestry mulcher for excavators
Max mulch
Adding bite limiter technology to its BL5/Ex forestry mulcher for excavators through its new BL Max blade will lift productivity and efficiency, manufacturer FAE says.
This technology reduces power demand and promotes a consistent working speed, which FAE says produces excellent performance mulching any type of wood.
The new BL Max blade features a large cutting surface, an optimised profile, ultra-strong built materials and special heat treatments. The BL Max blade can be sharpened to extend the life of the tooth.
The BL5/EX can mulch logs up to 16 inches (40.6cm) in diameter. It works with 24–36-ton (21.8–32.7-tonne) excavators and has a working width of 63 inches (160cm).
This machine can be equipped with FAE’s exclusive Sonic System, which keeps the operating machine and the FAE mulcher seamlessly aligned by automatic calibration. Every FAE user can easily access this technology with the FAE app for iOS and Android. The Sonic System continuously manages the mulcher’s hydraulic settings for a significant boost in overall productivity of up to 30 per cent.
The new BL Max blade is also an optional tooth for the 200/U forestry mulcher, which is available for the FAE PT-300 tracked carrier and other special high horsepower vehicles.
Truck overhaul
Hydac recently provided a full safety overhaul of an Australian concrete truck to reduce collision risk and improve product quality
Hydac, a motion control and fluid technology specialist, was engaged recently to overhaul a concrete truck for an Australian construction materials company to increase safety for both the operator and others around the truck.
The company installed a collision mitigation system, comprising four cameras positioned around the truck, provides full 360-degree visibility and is able to recognise when objects or people are near the truck and at risk of being struck. Hydac says the system can even recognise low-hanging power lines and alerts the driver to hazards that need action.
“Working with one of our collaborators, we were able to reduce the clutter and potential distractions within the cab by integrating its camera feed into our Vision 312 display,” Hydac says.
Hydac replaced the electrical control system with a TTC 32 electronic control unit that interfaces with a Scanreco remote control system that allows the driver to control the system from outside the cab.
“The remote control comes with a safety-rated stop function,” Hydac says.
“It also comes with an LCD display to show real-time water usage and the amount of concrete remaining in the barrel.
“Previously, the driver would have to climb a ladder to determine how much concrete remained in the barrel – another potential safety concern.”
The system allows for proportional control of barrel speed and direction, with dual outputs to control both sides of the solenoids.
“This provides two separate shutdown paths in case of an electrical fault,” Hydac says.
“For example, a short to power fault could occur, causing the discharge solenoid to activate. The TTC 32 can quickly detect the fault and prevent an accidental concrete spill by immediately switching off the lowside switch and alerting the driver of the fault.”
The system includes chute and water valve control – previously, the water valve could only be operated via a manual lever. There are multiple sensors positioned around the truck to track hydraulic motor pressure, barrel speed, hydraulic oil temperature and level and the water flow.
“Water usage is especially important as it affects the properties
of the concrete mix delivered to the customer,” Hydac says.
“The concrete must meet strict customer specifications as it greatly impacts the performance of the final product – especially critical in construction applications.
“Monitoring the water usage allows the concrete mixer company to assess whether abnormal amounts of water were added to the mix.”
The system can read J1939 CAN bus data from the engine, transmission and cruise control systems and override engine speed.
“This enables us to rotate the barrel at the higher speeds required to mix the concrete at the batching plant,” Hydac says.
“Multiple safety precautions have been implemented. An engine speed override is only allowed if the truck’s selected gear and actual gear are in neutral, the park brake is on and the service brake is not pressed.”
The TTControl Vision 312 display shows the camera feeds to alert the driver of potential obstacles. The display allows the driver to switch from individual cameras to a 360degree bird’s eye view, revealing all blind spots to the driver. The camera feed automatically switches to the reverse camera when the driver selects a reverse gear.
The display also interfaces with the weighing system to display the amount of concrete remaining in the barrel and an inclinometer alerts the driver if the truck is parked on dangerously steep inclines.
The TTC 32 and Vision 312 are programmed with Hydac’s Match software suite, which includes an in-built machine service tool and a test and simulation environment. These improve the software development process and ease of machine maintenance.
Multiple emergency-stop buttons were installed around the truck and a remote monitoring system was added to collect data from the truck, which is displayed on a dashboard that can be accessed remotely.
Family favourite
When he first moved from England to the northern NSW town of Moree in 1990, Howard Davies decided to set up his own business. Today, civil contractor R H Davies does a lot of roadworks and other construction projects for the Moree Plains Shire.
“I bought my first machine, a skid steer, and started taking on work for the local farmers in the area,” Howard says.
“My second machine was an excavator, which led to work in civil construction.”
After receiving a contract from the local council, Howard started getting more work in the civil space. Two machines turned into three and a few trucks were added to the business so it could float its own machinery to and from work sites.
The fleet now consists of around 15 machines and four trucks, with the machinery range including skidsteers, graders, excavators and rollers.
Ten years ago, Howard’s son Harrison started working for the family business.
“After school I jumped into one of the trucks and then progressed to operating machinery,” Harrison explains.
“Recently, we were looking to upgrade to a grader after having used skid steers with grader blades.
“We had not heard much about Hidromek to be honest, but came across the Hidromek HMK600MG grader when we were doing some online research.
“Onetrak had it in stock, so we headed to the Onetrak yard to have a closer look.
“We started out with the grader in a rent-to-buy agreement to see if it was the right machine for us.
“When we were looking at the grader we also got the opportunity to have a look at the Hidromek rollers and excavators. They all impressed with their build quality.”
Shortly after viewing the machines Howard and Harrison decided to purchase a HMK110CS roller and then also bought a HMK145LCSR excavator.
“The HMK145LCSR excavator has an operating weight of 16.8 tonnes, so it’s a bit heavier than other similar machines,” Harrison says.
“It’s definitely well built, with reinforced components on the boom and undercarriage. The excavator is super powerful and operates really well with the tilt hitch, posthole digger and breaker. It’s also very fuel efficient, which helps keep costs down.
“The HMK600MG grader has outstanding visibility thanks to how they have designed the cabin. We opted to have ours fitted with Topcon GPS, which works really well.
“The HMK110CS is a really nice roller. It’s super smooth to operate and gives a very nice finish. Again,
visibility is great thanks to the wide cab angles.”
Howard says that a particular stand-out for him and his team is the aircon system.
“We are definitely putting it to the test as Moree gets very hot and the machine cabs remain nice and cool,” he says.
“The Hidromeks are very smooth to operate and cabins are very spacious and comfortable, which is important when you’re doing big days. In short, they’re designed well and presented nicely.
“Onetrak has been very good to deal with. Nathan from the NSW team is our main contact and he has been super helpful. If he doesn’t have the answer he will find out and gets back to us straight away.
“When it comes to aftersales support we’re dealing mainly with Brad and he has also been brilliant. We have received nothing but good service, which is what you want when you purchase a new machine.”
Harrison concludes: “Having the machines on jobs out this way, we get
a lot of people who are curious about the Hidromeks and want to know what they are like.
“Like us, they haven’t seen that many around and, when they do, they are very impressed with the quality. We definitely recommend Hidromek and Onetrak to anyone asking. The operators we have had working for us have been very happy with the performance and comfort
of the machines, so it’s all positive from us.”

ConExpo Con/Agg 2023
With ConExpo Con/Agg 2023 taking place in Las Vegas in March we look at some of the machinery that will be on show
The largest earthmoving and mining trade show in North America will be bigger than ever this year, organisers confirm.
ConExpo will return for the first time since 2020 to the Las Vegas Convention Centre on 14–18 March with more exhibitors, more equipment and more machinery on show.
With the addition of an increased convention centre footprint, ConExpo will be 5 per cent bigger, according to show director Dana Wuesthoff.
“The addition of the new West Hall and Diamond Lot at the Las Vegas Convention Center gave us, and our exhibitors, a number of new opportunities to show how we are taking the construction industry to the next level,” Wuesthoff says.
“Now, at 2.8 million square feet [just over 260,000 square metres] of exhibits, there’s more for construction pros to see than ever before.”
Over 175 education sessions will be held throughout the show’s four-day run as well as the 1,800 exhibitors that will be featured.
“This is the event that construction professionals, especially those making company-level decisions, and those needing professional
development hours, can’t miss,” ConExpo show chair Phil Kelliher says.
“Seeing the new equipment and techniques on a screen doesn’t compare to seeing it all in person. At the show you can see the equipment, ask questions of the manufacturers themselves and really understand what the equipment and education can do for your career and business.”
Here are some of the highlights that have been announced:
JCB
JCB has championed its hydrogen technology in recent years – the

team of product experts on hand to discuss the technical capabilities and other key aspects of the haulers.
“We’re looking forward to getting as many attendees interacting with what we’ve got lined up as possible, as well as introducing people to our knowledgeable team, who are keen to show off our robust and hardworking haulers,” Rokbak managing director Paul Douglas says.
Liebherr
Given its involvement across both the earthmoving and crane sectors, Liebherr’s booth at ConExpo will be substantial, encompassing around 5,600 square metres of exhibition room and lots of machines on show.
The improved Generation 9 crawler excavators are among the machines on show. Both the R 924 and R 945A feature higher engine power, higher bucket capacities and increased digging and pulling forces compared to their predecessors.
Liebherr will also introduce the TA 230 Litronic articulated dump truck to the entire North American market, having previously only made them available in the US. The trucks feature a new design with a focus on performance, efficiency and comfort.
Komatsu
ConExpo will be Komatsu’s opportunity to display a variety of its new technologies to its customer base, including innovations such as Smart Construction, Smart Quarry and iMC2.0. The systems are designed to help operators optimise the capabilities of the machines, extend their lifespan and operate safely.
Machine-wise, Komatsu will unveil a host of new machines as well as others that are still relatively new to
market. Among the newer machines is the PC900LC-11 large hydraulic excavator – a machine designed for heavy construction and demolition applications.
Other machines on display include the PC360LCi-11 intelligent excavator, D39PXi-24, D51PXi-24 and D71PXi-24 dozers.
Volvo CE
As has been the theme at other trade shows across the globe over the past year, Volvo’s focus at ConExpo in 2023 will be sustainable technologies and solutions for the changing landscape of the industry.
Volvo CE has committed to being a fossil-free company by 2040 and has earmarked the theme ‘Change starts here, be ready for it’ for ConExpo. Two larger operating areas at the booth will be used for electric machines as part of a larger electric lineup that includes the EC230 midsize excavator and DD25 asphalt compactor, which was released ahead of ConExpo.
Other initiatives on show will include what Volvo CE claims is the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell articulated hauler – an autonomous concept that is remote-controlled.
“At ConExpo we want to help our customers be prepared for the change by showcasing our wide range of commercially available electric machines packaged with related charging infrastructure and other sustainable power alternatives,” says Volvo CE president Melker Jernberg.
Case Construction
“At ConExpo, Case will launch exciting new machines, reveal some unexpected products and our booth will clearly demonstrate our plan for making work easier and more productive,” Case Construction’s North American vice president Terry Dolan says. Dolan generated significant intrigue when previewing the company’s presence at ConExpo this year, placing a big focus on innovation and equipment that will better support the industry – whether that be dealers, customers or Case team members.
Case says as many as 30 new machines will be on the stand at ConExpo, as well as plenty of new attachments and technology, although the company remains tight lipped about exactly what will be on show.
Confirmed machines include the Case Minitour DL550 compact dozer loader – first released in 2022 – as well as the new E Series of excavators.
Compact crushing
McCloskey’s leading range of crushers and screeners now includes compact crushing models to rival anything else in the global market, says WA, SA and NT distributor 888 Crushing & Screening Equipment (888CSE).
“The McCloskey i4CR and i3CR compact crusher models combine high productivity and manoeuvrability with a compact footprint, making them ideally designed for recycling applications, smaller contractors and quarries alike,” says 888CSE sales manager Paul O’Neill.
“We just received the first i4CR, which we sold, with another one on the way, along with our first i3CR, which should be with us in the next few months,” O’Neill says.
“These compact crushers are used a lot in recycling of concrete and asphalt as well as demolition waste from skip bins – crushing and screening the material into sizes that can be reused as a recycled product.
“They are also used in gravel and limestone quarries, for softer rock applications. The old conventional way is that you have a crusher and a screen – two separate machines – on site, whereas this is a compact version, condensed into one unit, where you crush and screen all-in-one.”
High mobility
The i4CR is a self-contained, midsized portable high production compact crushing solution weighing in at around 42 tonnes with all closed circuit options included.
The i4CR offers an impressive performance to size ratio combining crushing, screening, recirculating and stockpiling units all on a single mobile chassis.
The even more compact i3CR weighs only around 27 tonnes with all closed circuit options included, making it the perfect crushing solution for contractors, mid-size recycling operators and owners of small quarries.
The i3CR combines productivity with the versatility of a full screening and recirculating system, allowing operators to produce a crushed and screened final product with one machine.
Both crushers include the option of an on-board screen and recirculating conveyor.
O’Neill says that mobility is key to the flexibility of these new units.
“These units were designed in a compact way purposely so that they can transport it easily, and not just from a transport aspect on the back of a smaller float, but also around site,” he says.
“They are very manoeuvrable and have a small footprint. A lot of contractors on inner-city jobs, where space is quite limited, still want to crush the material on site as opposed to taking it elsewhere to

crush it and then bringing it back to the same place to reuse the material, so these compact crushers can make this possible”.
Key features
Using advanced clutch technology, the crushers are highly economical, reducing fuel consumption and requiring less maintenance while increasing safety and productivity.
Designed with simplified controls and efficient hydraulics, they are sure to make an impact across a variety of materials and applications.
With easier servicing of hydraulic parts compared to electric-driven plants, McCloskey compact crushers ensure optimum uptime, says 888CSE.
“It’s down to the design – it’s not easy to build a small unit and not sacrifice the production, it’s quite a difficult task,” O’Neill says.
“But McCloskey have done that and they have excelled with things like access for maintenance. The components that they put into
the machines are high quality. This means that they are a little bit more expensive, but they last longer. So, the actual overall cost of the life of the machine is cheaper because you’re not having to replace those components as often.
“At the end of the day, it’s cost per tonne, and if a machine’s down, it’s not making any money. That’s McCloskey’s philosophy – to build a good quality machine to achieve maximum uptime.”
Along with the mobility and small footprint, O’Neill says another great feature for operators is the ability to track the machine while it is operating.
“Again, it’s helpful for operators with limited space as you can track the machine and crush at the same time,” he says.
“So, as a stockpile is getting higher from the crushed material, the operator feeding the crusher has the remote in the cab, and they can track it while it’s crushing. Thus, not having to get out and shut down the machine to move it, this can all be
done without leaving the cab. Again keeping the uptime of the machine.”
He also highlights the focus on ease of maintenance, with engine servicing and wear component changes a breeze despite the compact design.
“We also bring in the machines as standard with a hydraulic ram to replace the blow bars in the crushing chamber,” he says.
“Having this addition and platform for changing the blow bars is really beneficial because it reduces this process a lot, once again keeping the uptime of the machine.”
With 888CSE’s unrivalled support and service, these McCloskey compact crushing solutions are ready to make good in the Australian market.

Local boost
A regional council in Victoria is successfully using the latest positioning and machine control technology to carry out landfill cell construction and waste management more efficiently and at a lower cost for ratepayers.
At the same time, it is also taking the opportunity to introduce new technology to its own workers and operators, giving them added skills and expertise they can use in their careers.
In September 2019 the Shire of Corangamite, located west of Melbourne on the southern coast of Victoria, took delivery of a Komatsu D85EXi-18 dozer fitted with intelligent Machine Control (iMC) to work on its landfill operation at Naroghid, the Corangamite Regional Landfill.
The landfill operation is on a 39 hectare site and handles around 32,000 tonnes of waste a year, not only for Corangamite residents, but also for the adjacent shires of Warrnambool, Colac Otway and Southern Grampians.
During the drier summer months, the dozer is being used for construction of the waste cells and leachate ponds – which must be constructed to strict Victorian
Environment Protection Authority (EPA) requirements.
In addition, year-round, it is used for pushing and spreading waste material, covering it each day with 300mm of daily cover material, then capping the waste with materials, including clay and topsoil once each cell is filled.
According to Glenn Busuttil, Corangamite’s team leader waste at the Corangamite Regional Landfill, the Komatsu iMC dozer has proved to be very successful in both applications.
“When we construct new cells, we work to strict design requirements for their shape, things like 3:1 batters, batter heights and how high the rubbish can go.”
Over the past eight years, Corangamite has brought in contractors and surveyors to carry out this cell construction work, but it’s now able to do it by transferring the designs to the iMC dozer’s onboard system, with the dozer then working in with the scrapers and excavators that are also used for the cell construction.
The iMC dozer was also used to place a capping layer – consisting of 1.5m of clay, overlaid with around
800mm of soil and topsoil – to top off a filled waste cell.
“Doing these jobs this time, once we had the design, we had a surveyor working with us, helping to calibrate the machine and checking all the as-builts it was generating as we went,” Busuttil says.
“It was a much faster job with this technology. What was previously a 10-week job on constructing the cell we completed in around six weeks.”
That’s a 40 per cent productivity improvement. The dozer’s iMC technology is also making the dayto-day landfill operations faster and more efficient.
“Each day, we spread out the waste we’ve received that day, then cover it with 300mm of soil. The technology’s able to help with that, make sure that’s all a bit more accurate,” he says.
“One issue with waste is that, due to its nature, you can’t put in pegs and stringlines, so typically we’ve had to put in a windrow of clay each
day to give us a rough level to work off. Having the iMC machine do this makes it all much faster and more accurate.
“In addition, during this process, the dozer can also take the levels of waste that we’re putting down, using the RLs to give us the as-builts. Each month, we give these to the surveyors, and because we know the volumes of waste we’re receiving, we can work out our compaction rates over the site and how much waste we can get into a certain area.”
Positive reception
The iMC dozer also offers potential safety advantages, Busuttil says. At present, EPA and auditing requirements mean that a surveyor has to walk over the waste and work around the machines doing cell construction.
Busuttil says that while the primary goal has been to work more efficiently. The council’s ambition has also been for its own operators
and workers be able to do the job themselves, rather than have it contracted out.
“Now they are learning how to use GPS technology themselves,” he says.
“All our operators are local people and they’ve not had the opportunity to work with this technology before. We’ve never had it on our machines at the landfill previously.
“This opportunity to train our own local people, our own council employees, is really exciting. And they absolutely love it. Now, they feel they can operate equipment on a range of sites and to a high level in the future.”
Corangamite’s D85EXi-18 iMC dozer replaces another Komatsu D85 it had for 13 years, which had worked around 15,000 hours.
“We decided on another Komatsu because we’d always had good service and performance with the other one, plus we wanted the inbuilt GPS,” Busuttil says.
“The technology is absolutely
proving itself for this application. And, once we bring in our own base station, which we’re planning to do, that will take us to a whole new level.
“Applying this technology lets us deliver more efficient waste management for our ratepayers and adjacent councils, it is a better use of resources and it’s saving money.
“We don’t want to have to do things twice because it wasn’t right the first time – that’s wasting money.
“Now, our operators know how far to go with waste spreading and compaction, with the earthworks design, because they can get it right the first time, every time. That’s a big saving for us.”

Strong start
Five months after buying a new John Deere grader to send out on hire, Phil Hunt Parts owner Brendan Hunt says the investment has turned out a great addition to the business.
“We were approached by a local contractor with an excellent reputation, who landed some work dry grading local Shire roads,” he says.
“We’ve had it with him a couple months now and he’s found it operates really well. Both grader and operator are doing a great job keeping our local roads in good order.”
The Tamworth-based dealer is primarily known for supplying new, used and reconditioned parts for earthmoving machinery, covering brands such as Allis Chalmers, FiatAllis, John Deere and Hanomag. Hunt says his belief in the John Deere product led him to purchase the new grader for an expansion into machinery hire and the initial feedback from the operator using it, has been very positive.
“There’s a grade percentage level you can adjust, when forming up or repairing roads, that makes the job pretty easy,” he says.
“So, you can pass down one side and put a three per cent gradient in and then come around and go the other direction and do the same thing automatically. He’s pretty impressed with all that.
“It only took him a short while to get used to the new joystick control
system, which is a bit of a modern take on the old fingertip controls Deere used to run. It’s performing really well. It’s exceptionally good on fuel, he tells me.”
Although the business has extensive experience in graders from decades of supplying parts into them, Hunt says the purchase of the new grader with the intent to hire it out, was always going to be a risk, but a carefully calculated one.
“It’s one of those things, you throw yourself in the deep end and see if you can swim,” he says.
“We’re definite newcomers in the hire industry, but if things pan out as hoped, we’d certainly look at expansion again.
“I’m a believer in playing to our strengths and doing what we know, so if we expanded again, I’d concentrate on putting more graders in to work, rather than buy trucks and diggers like others might.”
It hasn’t just been the grader putting in the hard yards either, with Hunt saying the parts side of the business has been “red hot”.
“It’s been a terrific start to the year already,” he says.
“We’ve bought wrecking machines more heavily than we normally would, that’s how it goes sometimes in this business.
“Old Jack French – a legend of the industry – once told me to ‘buy until hurts, and then keep buying’. I guess I kind of took that to heart! We get
offered machines constantly and you can either step round them, or pull them on. We’ve had a good run in the last two to three months where we’ve bought some really good quality machines for the wrecking yard.
“Another legend of the industry and part-time mentor of mine, Tom Horwood from Rural Wrecking, always said ‘the better condition they are, the better they wreck’, so we’ve concentrated hard on that of late.”
Looking ahead, Hunt says he’s looking forward to putting a couple of thousand hours on the grader to see how it performs over the long pole, while continuing to expand the parts business, with exports proving to be a strong market while the Australian Dollar is down.
“We’re regularly exporting these days, particularly into the US,” he says.
“It’s amazing that a small family business from a bush community like Tamworth can keep machines moving, in literally every corner of the globe. I’m very proud the team here at Phil Hunt Parts and what we’re able to achieve for all our customers, both locally and around the world.”

HIGH-TECH solutions for ROAD MAINTENANCE and asphalt remediation
PRESSEXTRA
Porter Hire equipment is a common sight on Fulton Hogan projects, with a brand new AP240 multi-tyred roller one of three Ammann rollers recently dispatched for road repair works in NSW
On a roll
On a rural road in NSW, just outside of the Hunter Valley town of Singleton, three Ammann rollers have been employed in the stabilisation of a major road. In a familiar scene for the area, after it suffered from significant flooding in both March and July last year, the road was being rebuilt by Fulton Hogan when Earthmovers & Excavators magazine caught up with the team.
A well-known name in construction, Fulton Hogan also undertakes smaller civil projects across New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific, predominantly focused on projects that include asphalt and spray sealed bitumen services.
For repairs to the 28km Glendonbrook Road, three Ammann rollers were sourced from Porter Hire – an AP240 multi-tyred roller, ARS150 pad drum and ASR130 smooth drum – to assist with the compaction of road base and final finish of the road before applying the seal.
Fulton Hogan project engineer Josh Armstrong says that it is usual practice for the company to bring in hire machinery for this type of job.
“The division doesn’t own its own rollers, so we always hire them from Porter Hire and three is the standard that we hire for a job. We also have a grader and a tracked skid steer from Porter on site,” he says.
“We’re doing paving compaction. So, the padfoot provides compaction, as does the smooth drum but more at the back end to give us a nice flat finished surface for the grader. And then the multi-tyred roller is used to get a nice finish and get the road ready for the next step, which is spray seal.”
Porter Hire Australia national hire manager Paul Kot says the Glendonbrook Road site is just one of many Fulton Hogan projects that Porter Hire has supplied machinery to in recent years.
“Fulton Hogan have been doing a lot with us lately, so this particular project, where we hired the rollers
out, is just one of a variety of jobs happening at the moment where we supply dry hire gear to the company,” he says.
“We’ve developed an excellent relationship with the Fulton Hogan guys. We started off helping them out with just one machine and it’s continued to grow from there. Now, they have multiple machines on multiple sites, including graders, trucks, excavators and skid steer loaders, plus various attachments. It’s all late model and new equipment.”
Ammann rollers
The three rollers used on the construction of Glendonbrook Road are from Porter Hire’s suite of Ammann machines, which run from the light compaction 1.5-tonne trench roller all the way up to the 28-tonne multi-tyred roller at the heavy end.
“We’ve always had the Ammanns in our hire fleet, but the offering has grown significantly in the past two years,” Kot explains.
“We traditionally just had smooth
drum and padfoot rollers, but now we’ve added 2.5-tonne and four-tonne double drum rollers and nine-tonne to 28-tonne multi-tyre rollers. We’re also shortly bringing in the new Ammann five-tonne padfoot roller with blade and air-conditioned cab.
“The AP240 multi-tyred roller is part of the latest bunch of rollers that we’ve brought in over the last 12 months. It’s a brand-new unit that had just been delivered by Porter Equipment to us for the hire fleet and Glendonbrook Road was the first job that it went on.”
The AP240 multi-tyred roller is a finishing roller that works the final asphalt layer to prepare it for sealing. The machine has a ballasting range of nine tonnes to 24 tonnes, with Ammann saying that the ballasting arrangement and ease of adjustment is unique to the market, along with the variety of ballasting materials able to be used.
Suitable for both transport and building construction, the AP240 has a 74kW (99 horsepower) Cummins
engine and a top speed of 19km/h, with an air-on-run system to adjust tyre pressure and traction control to improve handling in tough terrain. With four pneumatic tyres at the front and four at the back, the machine has two workstations and a front isostatic axle with oscillation for higher stability and increased surface coverage.
An ARS150 pad drum roller was also used on site to handle the initial soil compaction, with Ammann saying that its higher compaction output achieves a faster compaction of thicker layers of material with fewer passes. With the pad drum designed to handle silt, clay and mixed soils, the machine uses Ammann’s ACEforce intelligent compaction tool that measures material stiffness to achieve the desired result, with various modes and a variable range of vibration frequencies to adapt the machine to different circumstances.
Bringing a maximum operating weight of 18 tonnes, the 115kW
Glendonbrook Road was the first job that it went on
(154hp) Deutz engine provides a maximum transport speed of 12.7km/h and a maximum working speed of 6.5km/h.
The third machine on site was a 15tonne ASR130 smooth drum roller, powered by a 100kW (134hp) Deutz engine that provides a maximum transport speed of 12km/h and a maximum working speed of 7.6km/h. Also utilising ACEforce technology, the smooth drum is more suited to compacting mixed soils, sand/gravel and rockfill.
“ACEforce is a great feature of the Ammann rollers – it makes compacting more efficient,” Kot says.
“It means you can do fewer passes as it will tell you when the material has been compacted as hard as it’s going to get with that roller.
“The old way was ‘we’ll do 20 passes and then measure it’ but the ground can only get so hard. If it gets to the point where the material’s as compacted as it’s going to get the drum will start bouncing rather than vibrating. It means you’re wasting
time and material and you could be doing damage to the machine. So, with ACEforce, it’ll tell you when it’s achieved maximum compaction for that machine.”
Kot adds that the Ammann roller range has consistently received positive feedback from hire customers.
“They’re very reliable – we’ve had very few problems with them,” he says.
“They’re easy to service and customers love them. Ammann has always been a premium roller product.”
Porter Hire
Discussing the benefits of hiring rollers out for a job, Armstrong says having high quality and well-maintained machinery on hand from Porter Hire is a huge benefit.
“All three machines are nice and new, well maintained and clean,” he says.
“We don’t have any issues with them in terms of breakdowns, which
is what you want, and they’re really easy to operate.
“With these ones being newer they are smoother across tough ground. Some of the older ones you get, having been around a bit, you can have some breakdown issues with them or general wear and tear, whereas these are nice and comfortable.”
The stabilisation of Glendonbrook Road is a typical Fulton Hogan project where machinery is temporarily hired out from Porter Hire for short-term jobs. The AP240 multi-tyred roller for example only spent a week on site before heading off elsewhere, requiring a high level of communication between dealer and client to get machinery to where it is needed quickly.
Armstrong says that working with Porter Hire over the past couple of years has made last-minute machinery needs easy to resolve, with a wide range of Ammann soil compaction units available in addition to excavators, loaders,

graders, skid steers, screens, crushers and dump trucks.
“Porter Hire are really good and very easy to deal with,” he says.
“A lot of the time, unfortunately, you get caught out with last minute things that pop up and you need gear on site that day, out of the blue. Porter Hire are always accommodating, willing to help and generally able to sort something out.
“They are responsive, with good communication and good prices. We can call them up and get the gear that we need booked with no dramas.”
Kot says that great customer service is key.
“We’ve got a great team here and we will react when you need us to,” he says.
“We can move the gear to where you need it and we work with you on what on what your requirements are.”

whether they are a new business start-up or an expanding business.
“They might already have their own direct bank relationships where they have been primarily funded through one lender and they want to grow but can’t because that lender is no longer comfortable with further lending. We can start diversifying for them and create more options for them to gain the funding they need.

Earthmoving specialist
The majority of loans that Shepherd handles for clients are chattel mortgages for the purchase of an asset with a fixed interest rate of repayment, but he also points to his ability to offer rent-to-buy facilities due to Shepherd Financial Services’ accreditation with lenders in that space.
Shepherd says that earthmoving as an industry appealed to him after seeing that, even in times of high inflation and rising fuel costs, the sector remains strong.
“The reason I targeted earthmoving
is because I have found, over 20 years, that earthmoving is a very robust industry,” he says.
“When the economy is struggling, the government tends to invest in infrastructure, which includes roadworks and construction, and when times are good, private enterprise is investing heavily in their own developments and that creates more spending in earthmoving as well. So, I think it’s a very good industry to be involved in both as a finance broker as well as for my clients.”
And it isn’t just excavators and dump trucks that Shepherd Financial Services can help find funding for – Shepherd says he handles loans for everything from machinery through to warehouse shelving if required.
“Basically, any commercial asset that has an identifying serial number,” he says.
“The banks have different lending criteria, with different types of assets having their own individual assessment of risk, but we can fund most assets.
“I think the biggest challenge for smaller businesses in particular is getting the funding approved at a competitive repayment rate that
enables them to acquire the asset quickly and easily and put it to work promptly and start making money out of that asset.”
This, he says, is where a financial broker like himself proves their worth in helping businesses navigate the red tape of a complicated financial system.
“I try to make it as easy as possible,” Shepherd says.
“There are no online applications, no waiting on hold anywhere –you’re dealing directly with me on my mobile phone. Within 15 minutes I usually have a pretty good feel for how I can help and can explain a pathway to satisfy my client’s funding needs. From there, it’s about getting the money approved in an efficient and prompt way.
“We can work through the perceived difficulties that a lot of people have which makes them hesitate. Many people’s experiences with the banks will be negative because, over the last five years, lending restrictions have definitely tightened and banks are asking for more now than they have ever asked for before.
“However, the demand for more funding is still there and many business owners may not be aware that a lot of new lenders have come into the marketplace who are very similar to the bank in rates but are less demanding in what they require in order to get a loan approved and we have accreditation with all these lenders.
“While some people may think that it’s too hard to get money, I’m here to show you that there are plenty of options out there, so give me a call.”

Double up
Rapid Rams is moving into the safety side of excavator equipment, with a new range of double-locking quick hitches being put to the test
Hydraulic cylinder specialist Rapid Rams is expanding its parts reach even further with a new range of double-locking quick hitches, built to the company’s own specifications.
Speaking with Earthmovers & Excavators, Rapid Rams owner Greig Mooney says three of the quick hitches have recently been delivered, designed for 1.7-tonne, 3.5-tonne and 5.5-tonne excavators, with the plan being to put them to the test with contractors and take on any feedback.
“We’re going to test these with the view to bring more in as there’s an aftermarket for these parts and it’s a good market to be in,” Mooney says.
“In Australia, the legislation has changed, so hitches now must be double locking, which means double the safety features. At the moment, most hitches on the market are single locking and there’s no safety belt.
“From a sheer safety point of view, where the excavator’s used as a crane, the hitch is currently its weakest point. We’re trying to get into the safety end of the market. That’s why we’re bringing three in to test.
“We’ll put them out to good
customers that we know and they can use and abuse, see how they go.”
This is a new venture for the Victorian business, with the bulk of its focus on importing and building hydraulic cylinders for everything from small skid steers to 125-tonne mining machinery. Based in Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula and with a warehouse in Melbourne, Mooney says Rapid Rams is also continuing to invest in its hydraulic
cylinder range, with a recent shipment of Komatsu parts bringing its stock up to 400 cylinders.
“We’re also doing H bars, pins, dog bones and bushes, everything where the bucket connects,” Mooney says.
“It’s currently very difficult to get those parts here in Australia but we carry a whole range of them.
“That parts range is proving to be successful and the cylinder range is growing all the time. We’ve been selling quite a few cylinders now, it’s been really good.”
He says this stock availability is what sets Rapid Rams apart in a market that is struggling to meet demand.
“The biggest thing that we offer, because we have so many parts in stock, is the reduction of downtime. Machines will only be down for the time it takes to buy the cylinder or component that they require. Most manufacturers don’t even carry these in stock,” he says.
“New machine sales are still 12 months in arrears. If you want to go and buy a well-known brand and expect to buy it tomorrow, you can’t do it. However, if you’re looking for parts, we’ve got them on hand.”

Cost pressures
The civil construction industry in Queensland is an essential part of the state’s infrastructure, supporting economic growth and development. However, as I have previously written, the industry is still facing significant cost escalation pressures that threaten its future growth and sustainability.
While cost escalation is a common issue in the construction industry, the rising costs of materials, labour and equipment required to complete a project can quickly spiral out of control, leading to significant delays, cost overruns and even project cancellation. In recent years, the civil construction industry in Queensland has faced significant, unforeseen and unmanageable cost escalation pressures due to a variety of factors, including a shortage of skilled labour, rising material costs and increasing regulatory and policy requirements. The demand for skilled construction workers has increased but supply has not kept pace.
This is having significant implications on the industry’s future growth and sustainability.
Construction companies that cannot effectively manage cost escalation may struggle to remain competitive and profitable, which can limit their ability to take on new projects and invest in new technology and equipment. Additionally, cost escalation can lead to delays and project cancellations, which can harm the reputation of construction
companies and lead to long-term damage to their business.
Regulatory and policy requirements are also contributing to cost escalation in the civil construction industry in Queensland. The Queensland government has implemented a range of social and sustainability targets to be delivered under contracts. While these policies provide social and environmental benefit, they can also add significant costs to a project. Meeting regulatory requirements can involve additional permits, fees, levees, inspections and other expenses that quickly add up.
Clients and contract administrators have mixed responses to the problem. We are still seeing blatant disregard for these issues facing contractors. Contractors run a massive financial risk in engaging with clients that are not prepared to address the increasing cost pressures within their procurement processes, contracts and contract management. There is also a real risk to the client that projects will not be delivered through nonparticipation of the industry, poor performance of the contractor, or if the contractor goes broke.
The forecast pipelines of infrastructure projects for
With an ambitious pipeline of infrastructure planned, efficiency is key
Queensland and Australia are growing over the coming years. The Queensland government has just announced joint funding with the federal government of $7 billion for the upcoming Olympic Games.
While a lot of this money will go to vertical infrastructure there is a range of supporting civil infrastructure to be constructed. There is also an ambitious construction pipeline of renewables and a much needed catch up of infrastructure for Queensland’s growth. These issues combined will mean that every contractor will be required to operate at their maximum capacity.
The cost escalation pressures are creating a lot of stress on capital works programs as these budgets are being overrun. Based on the gap in infrastructure needed and the rate of delivery, the delaying or cancellation of projects should not be an option. Both the federal and Queensland governments must increase these budgets in-line with the inflationary pressures due to internal and external factors. However, the impact on budgets can be softened.
Some initiatives that should be used are the continued use of collaborative contracts and early contractor involvement, flexibility in specifications, client support to adopt new strategies and technologies, and embracing more sustainable building practices.
Sustainable building practices can reduce material costs by using recycled or locally sourced materials that also improve energy efficiency, which can lead to lower operating costs over time. Compliance and conformance mechanisms in contracts need to be simplified and embrace new technology. This will assist in building delivery efficiencies instead of placing an additional administrative burden and productivity hand breaks.
The key to overcoming the issue of rising costs and a growing pipeline of work is for all stakeholders to proactively work together to challenge the status quo and implement emerging and established construction practices, technologies, specifications, designs, procurement and contract management methods that are being used in Australia and overseas.

All-round revamp
The Olympus YX 636C joins the YX Series as the smallest of the seven loaders, boasting improvements to make the machine more productive and powerful on site.
The YX 636C replaces the 638 model and now runs a 150 horsepower (111.8kW) Cummins engine that has been married up to a larger ZL50 transmission.
The transmission is the same found in the larger 18-tonne machines, making the new 636C a more durable loader.
“The transmission increases the lifting capacity of the loader by 500kg,” Olympus Loaders director Simon Collins says.
“It’s going to compete a bit cheaper with the 150hp engine and a special build that is only for Australia.”
Other improvements made on the new YX Series 636C loader include upgraded wheels, which have been widened from 17.5/25 inches to 20.5/25 inches. The larger wheels, along with the newly extended wheelbase, helps achieve a larger breakout force and improved traction.
For the operator, the cab size has been increased by 15 per cent as a result of the longer wheelbase. In addition, the high volume airconditioned pressurised cabin keeps the environment cool.
A pilot control joystick and rear
opening engine hood provides easy manoeuvring and maintenance for the loader.
Collins says improvements made to the transmission and hydraulic system mean the YX 636C can lift up to 3.5 tonnes, making it more productive than the 638 model it is replacing.
Additional features of the 636C include an hydraulic quick hitch for speedy and efficient attachment changes. This is achieved via an auxiliary hydraulic function that is also able to run hydraulic attachments such as augers, four-in-one buckets and hydraulic forks. Rippers can also be fitted to the YX 636C.
Collins says the first units of the YX 636C are currently on their way to Australia from the Olympus Loaders factory overseas.
Olympus Loaders offers a threeyear structural frame warranty on all wheel loaders in the YX series as well as a two-year or 2,000-hour warranty on the Cummins engine, which can be upgraded to five years or 5,000 hours.
For more information on the YX Construction Series loaders including the new 636C loader, visit www.olympusloaders.com.au or call 1800 566 080.

Mastenbroek to launch the American Bulldog at ConExpo-Con/Agg 2023
UK self-propelled trencher and crawler truck manufacturer Mastenbroek will unveil its first-ever utility trencher, designed specifically for North America, at ConExpo-Con/ Agg 2023 in March.
The Bulldog is a small footprint, compact and powerful trencher designed to meet the need of utility cable and pipeline layers.
The 10.9m-long machine is designed to work in confined areas and its forward discharge conveyor system retracts to give a 2.5m width, making it easy to transport.
The new Bulldog features a new Volvo 8-litre engine and enhanced digging mechanism.
The Bulldog also features an offset cutting head and forward swing conveyor. A steerable undercarriage enables curved trench lines and the track lift allows the machine to straddle raised pedestrian walkways.
As well as revealing full details of the Bulldog, Mastenbroek commercial director Christopher Pett
will be talking to visitors to ConExpoCon/Agg 2023 about the company’s intention to establish a regional dealer network to sell and service the machine.
“The Bulldog has been designed with the needs of companies laying underground power cables along the west coast of America firmly in mind,” Pett says.
“Our 17/17 has proved incredibly effective in Europe, where it has been used to perform a similar role to what is required in the United States. That’s why we have based the Bulldog on that platform. Both the 17/17 and the Bulldog are competitively priced. Introducing a new engine, enhanced digging mechanism and hydrostatic drive system will ensure the Bulldog delivers impressive performance daily.
“We look forward to unveiling the American Bulldog at ConExpo-Con/ Agg 2023 and are grateful to the UK Department of International Trade for allowing us to have a presence on their stand at the event.”

TECHNOLOGY
Startup spending
CampX by Volvo Group has opened a new Incubator track for startups to accelerate sustainable mobility innovations
More than 50 startups have developed their ideas at CampX, the global collaboration hub for innovations run by Volvo Group. The concept gives promising startups a physical place to explore and accelerate new ideas together with Volvo Group. Now, Volvo Group is taking the next step by adding a new track called Incubator where early-stage startups are invited to further develop innovations.
Volvo Group says it is committed to supporting startups in developing viable and impactful innovations with a focus on sustainability, specifically via electromobility, autonomous vehicles and digital solutions.
“We are confident that the CampX concept can help catalyse an urgent transformation of the transport industry towards a sustainable future. Speed in innovation is perhaps the most crucial factor on this challenging journey,” Volvo Group chief technology officer Lars Stenqvist says.
“CampX is a strategic engine where we can accelerate technology and business innovation through partnerships. Our thousands of technical and business experts can assist startups in co-creating and validating their new ideas, for
example by using our laboratories, test vehicles and workshops.”
The first batch of Incubator startups are working across a targeted range of prioritised high-tech areas. They are:
• Radchat – a company working on enabling radars to communicate to get precise positioning in, for example, underground mines
• Repli5 – which is developing software to automate the creation of 3D environments for simulation
• K ite – which is working with thermal management solutions for electromobility to enable efficient cooling
• F yrqom – a company working with automated tyre pressure measurement and management
• Autonomous Knight – which has developed a multi spectral camera to enable better all-weather vision.
“Ideas from startups such as these first five can lead to important benefits for the transport industry. We help entrepreneurs to validate their potential breakthrough solutions as quickly as possible, to advance sustainable mobility,” head of CampX Helene Niklasson says.
“By having these startups literally next to our Volvo engineers, we thus encourage spontaneous interactions. Everyone knows the best ideas are often brainstormed next to the coffee machine.”
ROADS
Stable solution
Wirtgen has launched new automation technology for cold recyclers and soil stabilisers
Soil stabilisers are used on road beds to improve the load-bearing ability of the soil during road construction by mixing it with binding agents such as cement and/or lime. In the case of cold recycling with WR series machines, damaged asphalt layers are milled and resized, re-bound by the addition of binding agents and water and then repaved.
Wirtgen’s new AutoTrac system helps Wirtgen wheeled recyclers achieve greater process efficiency and a high degree of environmental compatibility. It steers the machine precisely within tolerances on the basis of a previously calculated reference strip and a specified overlap of adjacent strips, enabling consistent utilisation of the machine’s ideal working width.
AutoTrac relies, among other things, on various global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) for precise determination of the machine’s position and direction of travel. The system is operated from an additional control panel that also enables the operator to view information about the position of the machine and previously completed strips.
Keeping to the pre-set overlaps reduces the consumption of binding agents, consumables and fuel, makes the carbon footprint smaller and shortens the project completion time. The automatic steering system assists the operator by removing the need for manual adjustment and reduces the workload.

FPT Industrial’s first hydrogen engine is being put to use in a snow groomer for the Ski World Cup
FPT Industrial has been working with Prinoth, a manufacturer of snow groomers and tracked vehicles, to debut the new XC13 hydrogen engine at the Ski World Cup in Austria.
The Prinoth Leitwolf h2Motion is the world’s first hydrogen-powered snow groomer with an internal combustion engine by FPT Industrial. The new concept vehicle is equipped with the new FPT XC13 hydrogen version, a 13-litre, six-cylinder engine, which delivers 460hp (33kW) and 2,000Nm of torque.
The new FPT XC13 is the world’s first multi-fuel single-base engine, says FPT Industrial. From diesel to natural gas – including biomethane –to hydrogen and renewable fuels, the base engine has been designed with multiple versions to offer maximum component standardisation and easy integration into the final product.
The hydrogen fuel is stored in five
tanks mounted on the back of the machine for an indicative running time of more than three hours.
“Unveiled in September 2022, [the machine is] now ready for its first field test. Such a short timeframe reveals the unique quality of our XC13 engine,” FPT Industrial vice president product engineering Pierpaolo Biffali says.
“We are proud to be next to Prinoth in our mission to deliver sustainable propulsion solutions for our customers.”
Prinoth president Klaus Tonhäuser adds: “The FPT Industrial engine of the Leitwolf h2Motion is similar to a diesel engine and offers our customers what they are used to from other machines. This will contribute to the acceptance of the technology.”

HOSPITAL
Local investment
Consortia are asked to submit their interest in the construction of a new hospital west of Melbourne
The Victorian government has opened expressions of interest for a consortium to deliver the design, construction, finance and maintenance of the new Melton Hospital, which will be built in the Cobblebank area of Melton, west of Melbourne.
The new hospital is being funded with more than $900 million in the Victorian Budget 2022/23 and will be Victoria’s first hospital to be powered by 100 per cent renewable energy – creating more than 2,400 jobs during construction.
The project will be delivered as a public-private partnership, providing 24/7 emergency care with at least 274 beds, an intensive care unit, maternity and neonatal services, mental health services, radiology services and outpatient care. It will have capacity to treat 130,000 patients each year and see almost 60,000 patients in the emergency department alone.
The state government is seeking candidates from suitably qualified and experienced consortia who “have the vision and capability to deliver the landmark project”.
Later this year, the shortlisted consortia will be invited to prepare detailed proposals to deliver the new hospital, before a preferred consortium is appointed and construction gets underway.
The project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, in partnership with Western Health, which will operate the hospital. Enabling construction works are underway and major construction is expected to start in 2024 and be finished in 2029.
“We’re getting on with delivering a new 24-hour public hospital in Melton so locals can get the very best care, closer to home – when they need it most,” Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas says.
“Melton is one of the fastest growing communities in Australia and that’s why we’re building a worldclass hospital and finding the right consortium to get it done.”
Member for Melton Steve McGhie adds: “This landmark hospital will transform Melton and our surrounding suburbs, located close to public transport, the Western Freeway and recreational facilities – making it easier for patients to access.
“I’m looking forward to working with our Community Consultative Committee to ensure this massive community asset reflects the needs and diversity of the outer western community it’s serving.”
TENDER
Campus construction
An expansion to the Kirwan Community Health Campus in Townsville is open for tender
A $40 million project that will deliver a new state-of-the-art health facility in the Townsville suburb of Kirwan is underway, with the project tender being issued.
“The Kirwan Community Health Campus will soon be a hive of activity as construction kicks off in the second half of 2023,” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says.
“The Kirwan area is rapidly growing, and this project will ensure that locals have access to appropriate, modern health services.”
The expanded campus will include a new two-storey facility containing pre and post-natal care, oral health services and additional outpatient treatment centres.
Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper says that the campus expansion will support the health service’s delivery of community care.
“I’m thrilled that we’re able to announce the next important step to delivering the incredible expansion of our Kirwan Community Health Campus,” Harper says.
“This is a project that I have fought hard for and am proud to deliver for my community.
“Importantly, it will also support around 116 construction jobs.”
The campus will be Green Starcertified, meaning the design, construction, build and fit out will include measures to limit the building’s environmental impact.
Construction work on the expansion is expected to be completed by late 2024.
COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Get ready
Ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, construction businesses can register their interest
The Victorian government has opened the Expression of Interest (EOI) process for the construction sector to build the Commonwealth Games villages ahead of the event, which will take place in the state in 2026.
The Games villages will be home to around 7,000 athletes and officials in Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Morwell when the Commonwealth Games get underway in March 2026. These projects will create opportunities for regional contractors to be involved in construction.
Early works at each location are expected to begin later this year, with village designs and numbers of dwellings required at each site still being finalised.
The EOI will seek input from the market about businesses’ capacity and capability to be involved.
The response will help inform decisions including types of permanent and temporary dwellings that will be delivered.
Delivery partners are invited to submit an EOI to support delivery of:
• medium-density dwellings, including pre-fabricated relocatable dwellings
• small apartment buildings
• place making
Interested parties can register via the Buying for Victoria website buyingfor.vic.gov.au, from which a shortlist of contractors will be invited to participate in a Request for Proposal process.
Victoria 2026 will leave a legacy of housing and new and upgraded sports infrastructure to attract future major events.
It is estimated the 2026 Commonwealth Games will create more than 600 full-time equivalent jobs before they start, 3,900 jobs during the Games and a further 3,000 jobs after the Closing Ceremony, and is expected to contribute more than $3 billion to Victoria’s economy.
“We’re getting on with delivering Victoria 2026 and we’re taking a step closer to seeing these Games come to life,” Minister for Commonwealth Games Delivery Jacinta Allan says.
“Victoria 2026 will invest significantly in community infrastructure, including much needed additional housing in regional communities.”
Minister for Commonwealth Games Legacy Harriet Shing adds: “The 2026 Games give us a fantastic opportunity to partner with local businesses and contractors in creating athletes villages that are modern, accessible and energy efficient.”

A community event in Glenrowan marked the start of work on the Victorian section of Inland Rail
Work has started on the Victorian section of the Inland Rail project, with local council representatives joining ARTC CEO Mark Campbell and Inland Rail interim chief executive Rebecca Pickering in Glenrowan in northern Victoria recently to mark the occasion.
Connecting Melbourne and Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, Inland Rail is Australia’s largest freight rail infrastructure project.
Inland Rail follows along the existing North East Rail Line that was upgraded in 2021. To enable double stacked trains ARTC must upgrade existing infrastructure at 12 sites.
McConnell Dowell, the appointed contractor on the first four projects at Seymour, Barnawartha North, Glenrowan and Wangaratta, has commenced preliminary site works and will move into major construction in coming weeks. The remaining projects are currently in the reference design stage.
Inland Rail has already completed the Parkes to Narromine section in New South Wales with major construction works also underway on the Narrabri to North Star section in the state.
“Inland Rail is a nation-building project, supporting jobs and economic opportunities in regional communities and improving Australia’s freight network,” Pickering says.
“Over the next four years, Inland Rail is set to deliver vital local stimulus and support hundreds of Victorian jobs.”
HYBRID POWER
Bright idea
Metronet’s Whiteman Park Station unveils solar-powered construction site
WA’s first 50kVa hybrid solar battery is being used to power construction work at Metronet’s Whiteman Park Station, saving up to 45,000 litres of diesel a year.
Western Australia’s largest rail infrastructure project, the Metronet Morley-Ellenbrook Line is now home to the hybrid solar battery, which is powering the off-grid construction site at the Whiteman Park Station on the north-west edge of Perth.
The hybrid power system consists of a large solar fold out array, a battery and a small backup generator. The 44-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) panels generate electricity, with excess energy sent to charge the 45kVA battery, which is stored for overnight use or when the sun is not shining.
The initiative supports the Metronet Sustainability Strategy,
which has a target to reduce greenhouse gas emission from materials and energy across the program’s construction and operations phases by 20 per cent.
“This is a great example of our government seeking innovative solutions that reduce our carbon footprint, particularly on major infrastructure projects like the MorleyEllenbrook Line,” WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti says.
“Across all our Metronet projects we’re looking at ways to reduce environmental impacts and using a hybrid solar battery at the Whiteman Park Station shows the benefits of using renewable energy for construction.
“To date the hybrid solar battery has proven to be successful, and we will look at other opportunities to use similar systems on other projects.”
The project is forecast to create hundreds of jobs
New life
NAIF will provide $66 million to reinvigorate an abandoned historical Central Queensland gold mine
Heritage Minerals has been awarded a loan from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) to reprocess old tailings and rehabilitate the Mount Morgan site, located about 40km south of Rockhampton.
Operations at Mount Morgan closed in 1990 and the abandoned mine has since been managed by the Queensland government, which is also providing financial support to the project.
The proposed tailings plant at Mount Morgan will treat two million tonnes of tailings a year, while a new water treatment plant to be built as part of the project will improve water quality in the Dee River.
Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Madeleine King says the project is forecast to create 250 new direct construction jobs and up to 150 operational jobs, with further indirect jobs promised alongside economic and social benefits for the wider Rockhampton region totalling an estimated $849 million.
“This much-needed project will create jobs and invigorate economic activity in the region,” King says.
“It is an excellent example of renewal in the resources industry.”
The recovery of gold and copper from tailings will help meet increasing demand for the resources required for the clean energy transition while also improving environmental outcomes for the region and industry.
NAIF CEO Craig Doyle says that with the Queensland government also supporting the project, he was confident the proponents would deliver the infrastructure to ensure the region secures the forecast public benefit.
“The Mount Morgan project is consistent with the Australian government’s agenda of diversifying economies and creating regional economies,” Doyle says.
“With this latest investment, NAIF continues our momentum in terms of investments approved, projects reaching contractual close, delivering public benefit, and supporting Indigenous outcomes across the north.”
QLD mine to re-open JOBS
An abandoned mine in far north Queensland is set to be converted into a commercial asset once again to help the critical minerals industry
The Wolfram Camp mine, situated 90km west of Cairns, has remained dormant since 2018 but is soon to be reopened for what the Queensland government has described as resource exploration activities.
Tenders have been put out for the resource exploration, which will cover an area of 480 square kilometres, in a bid to create more jobs and find more resources.
The Wolfram Camp site was operational from the 19th century through to 2018. The camp is named for wolframite – an important primary ore of tungsten, which is prevalent in the area and has many uses including in solar technology, wind turbine blades, drill bits and filaments for lighting.
Queensland Resources Minister Scott Steward says the project, which is still in its pilot stage, has the potential to pave the way for more abandoned sites to be given a new lease of life.
“Queensland’s long history of
resources activity has left a legacy of abandoned mines across the state but, thanks to advancing technology and changing market demands, some of these mines have the potential to once again become commercial operations,” Stewart says.
“After consulting with industry groups, miners, explorers and local representatives last year, it was clear there was great interest in restarting resource activities at the abandoned Wolfram Camp mine.
“This project is a pilot that could potentially see more of our abandoned mine sites around the state transformed from a liability to an asset – once more generating good jobs and royalties for all Queenslanders.
“Those royalties can also help offset the cost of managing existing, abandoned mines, while the government has also acted to prevent future issues with tighter requirements for progressive mine rehabilitation.”

CONCRETE
Bulk build
Hallett Group has added a huge new cement storage dome to its Port Adelaide site
A 42-metre tall Domesilo has been constructed at Hallett’s Green Cement Distribution Hub at Port Adelaide – the first large concrete Domesilo in Australia and the world’s first large volume drivethrough Domesilo facility.
A Domesilo is constructed by inflating a fabric ‘airform’, which is reinforced with steel and sprayed concrete within to build the structural walls and roof.
In conjunction with Flinders Port Holdings, Hallett Group is upgrading the existing wharf at Berth 25 to facilitate the project. The upgraded wharf will be a common-user berth increasing import and export capacity within the Inner Harbour, Port Adelaide precinct. The upgraded berth will service vessels up to an overall length of 185 metres.
The cement facility will consist of a 52,000-ton (47,000-tonne) cement storage dome, 15,000-ton (13,600-tonne) flexible supplementary cementitious material (SCM) storage shed and stateof-the-art on-demand green cement blending and distribution function. The on-demand cement blending will accelerate reductions in embodied carbon in concrete.
The facility will be free of airborne emissions and located in the Inner Harbour east side industrial area.
Hallett plans to provide the market with at least 30 million tons (27.2 million tonnes) of SCMs over the next 20 years and beyond.
By using existing renewable energy sources to beneficiate by-product materials, Hallett will manufacture the lowest C02 Portland cement products compared to anywhere in the world, it says.
FOUNDATIONS
In the mix
Mass soil mixing employed for port tank construction
The IOR Lytton Terminal at the Port of Brisbane is being expanded with eight new fuel storage tanks. Keller was contracted to improve the ground conditions by mass mixing the foundations for the new tanks and crane bases.
As the area used to be a swamp, the amount of organic material in the soil is high and the groundwater table is also high, requiring an approach that took these two challenges into consideration. The right soil mix had to be found that gave the required strength but also mixed to a good consistency to deliver a high quality product.
The site has an existing tank – the foundations for which had been constructed by removing the soft and compressible soils and replacing these with structural fill. A similar solution was initially considered by the client for the new tanks. However, due to high water table
Mass mixing was employed to provide the structural stability for the new foundations
and proximity to the existing tank and associated infrastructure, an alternative ground improvement solution was deemed necessary. Keller worked collaboratively with IOR to workshop and provide various foundation solutions, with mass mixing being the most cost-effective solution that suited the challenging ground conditions, with the project’s geotechnical consultant Golder Associates verifying the design.
An extensive laboratory trial followed by rigorous site testing and monitoring enabled Keller to come up with a combination of optimum binder dosage and pre-digging to reduce the heave and quantity of spoil, thus saving the client a lot of trimming and disposal.

New build
Additions to the Australian Apprenticeship Priority List include construction estimator, electronic equipment trades workers and technicians
The expansion of the number of occupations covered by the Australian Apprenticeship Priority List is welcome news to builders around the country says Master Builders acting CEO Shaun Schmitke.
The list has been expanded from 77 to 111. This means more apprentices and their employers can access support through the Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System, which includes direct payments to apprentices and a wage subsidy for employers.
“There’s been an addition of eight new occupations in building and construction added to the list taking it to 47 in total.
“Master Builders has long called for targeted efforts to incentivise the retention and completion rates of apprentices and today’s announcement is an active step in tackling low completion rates.
“Wage subsidies can be the difference between choosing to hire or not hire an apprentice. Eligible employers will be able to access a 10 per cent reimbursement of the first and second-year apprentice wages and a five per cent reimbursement of thirdyear wages.
“Apprentice payments incentivise them to stay in their training and assist with cost-of-living pressures. Eligible building and construction apprentices will receive $5,000 in four payments during their apprenticeships.”
The updated list also identifies the apprenticeship pathways eligible for the government’s New Energy Apprentice Support Payment, of which 28 occupations are relevant to the building and construction industry. The payment provides eligible apprentices with five $2,000 payments over the course of their apprenticeship.
STRATEGY
Be prepared
The Western Australia government recently released its response to the inaugural State Infrastructure Strategy, called Foundations for a Stronger Tomorrow
The strategy was put together by Infrastructure WA – WA’s independent infrastructure advisory body.
After extensive consultation across the public sector, the state government has fully supported 58 per cent and partially supported 40 per cent of recommendations made by Infrastructure WA, while rejecting two per cent. There was a total of 93 recommendations across nine sectors and seven themes, ranging from climate action and sustainability to transport, health and planning.
Some of the recommendations the government fully supports relate to:
• climate change adaption
• developing the state’s hydrogen industry

“Western Australia’s first State Infrastructure Strategy provided 93 wide-ranging recommendations to improve how we manage, deliver
and plan for state infrastructure,” Premier Mark McGowan says.
“The state government response demonstrates our commitment to these objectives, with almost all of Infrastructure WA’s recommendations either fully or partially supported.
“The McGowan government has committed to a record infrastructure program, and this response shows how we will continue to ensure current and future investment delivers lasting benefits to the Western Australian community.”
Infrastructure WA says that, with the response to the strategy now handed down the focus shifts to implementing the supported recommendations and agencies and trading enterprises can now align their strategies, plans, policies and major infrastructure initiatives with the supported recommendations.
IWA will lead implementation of a number of recommendations, including accelerating digital transformation and improving planning and coordination of infrastructure, while also providing high-level assistance to agencies.

Toyota Material Handling Australia revives National Skills Competition to find the country’s top technician
Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has kicked off its National Skills Competition, held for the first time since 2019.
The competition allows TMHA forklift technicians and apprentices to hone their skills while competing for valuable prizes.
Winners of the competition will receive a free overseas factory tour to one of the TMHA facilities in Japan, the United States or Sweden, as well as a $5,000 cash prize. Second and third place will win $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.
The 2023 content will assume a new format comprising three different stages.
The first began in February and is an online 40-question multiple choice quiz about TMHA’s machinery and product. The quiz is an open book test with all answers found in the technicians’ repair manuals.
From there, the top 50 per cent of contestants will take another online test, this time being a mix of multiple choice and long-form answers that will help determine the depth of each technician’s knowledge.
The field is then reduced to just eight technicians and six apprentices, who will be flown to Sydney to compete in eight different challenges at TMHA’s head office in Moorebank.
Taking place in May, contestants will undertake the final technician challenges that contain a mixture of servicing and repair work over two days. Apprentices will compete in a one-day event with support provided.
The overall winner will be crowned the Master Technician and will enter a mentorship program to assist apprentices for the next three competition years.

Yanmar CE and ASV merge, with new Minnesota facility expansion planned
Yanmar Compact Equipment
North America (YCENA), encompassing the Yanmar Compact Equipment and ASV brands, has finalised its status as a single legal entity. The announcement comes three years after the Yanmar acquired ASV.
“This is a huge step for us, our dealers and our customers,” YCENA president Tate Johnson says.
“The alignment of the two brands allows us to focus on expansion, new products and overall strategic growth in North America while finding new ways to serve our customers.”
Yanmar CE and ASV have operated as YCENA from a commercial standpoint since July 2020. The alignment as a single, legal entity allows for a better, more capable and dedicated compact equipment entity focused on leadership in the North American compact equipment market, it says.
It will also allow a wider range of compact equipment offerings longterm, offer a single way for compact equipment dealers to do business with YCENA and strengthen the global Yanmar CE team.
The Yanmar CE and ASV brands will remain distinct under YCENA with each brand retaining its product lines and dealer networks.
Facility expansion
YCENA has also announced a 32,000-square-foot expansion to its Grand Rapids, Minnesota facility. The new expansion and a subsequent paint system will increase paint capacity by up to three times with maximum automation and allow a doubling of its parts manufacturing capacity.
“We received a lot of support through the investment of Yanmar Co. Ltd, and several city, county and state grants and loans to help make this expansion happen,” YCENA president Tate Johnson says.
“The expansion will improve efficiency, allowing us to better serve our customers as we continue to grow as a leader in compact equipment.”
The new paint system will be more efficient, have a lower environmental impact and convert a liquid paint process to a powder coating system with more paint capacity for a higher production rate. The relocated paint system will allow the space previously occupied to be outfitted with robotic weld cells and cutting tables, optimising plant flow.
The company expects to break ground in the spring of 2023 on its expansion with a target for completion the following year.

Race to Net Zero Carbon: A Climate Emergency Guide for New and Existing Buildings in Australia is
a 40-page guide that details critical information about materials and construction best practices.
“Our guide draws on Australian climate data but has global applicability,” says Professor Deo Prasad, who is lead researcher of the guide.
“This guide provides a deeper level of knowledge on how this sector can rapidly move towards net zero carbon buildings in the short-term. Using science-based evidence and analytics, the guide maps a clear roadmap to achieving net zero by 2040 in the building industry. It goes beyond the aspirational and into the achievable,” he says.
The world’s built environment is responsible for 37 per cent of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. In Australia, it is responsible for one-fifth of emissions.
Carbon emissions within the built environment occur across all stages of a building’s life cycle.
“Historically, most professionals have only focused on reducing the operational carbon footprints of buildings,” Prasad says.
“Operational carbon refers to what is required for the building to run once it is built, like energy use in heating or cooling.”
Operationally carbon-friendly
buildings are fully powered from on-site and off-site renewables, which offset the buildings carbon emissions. Meanwhile, embodied carbon footprints, which are accrued before a building is even constructed, have usually been overlooked by the industry.
“There are significant amounts of emissions embedded in the materials and construction of the building itself and these need to be addressed and offset in order for our built environment to be truly net zero,” Prasad says.
“Our guide goes deeper than just operational offsetting. It illustrates a ‘whole of life’ approach to buildings – considering where building material comes from, how they are transported to the construction site, and so on.”
The best way to minimise the embodied carbon footprint is by retrofitting and reducing materials in use. If that’s not possible, then employing low-carbon materials such as green steel and concrete alternatives during the construction process is best, which is what the guide provides a roadmap for.
The guide also details postlife opportunities for buildings destined to be demolished –creating opportunities to expand the circular economy.
“Buildings don’t have a cradle to grave life cycle,” Prasad says.
“It’s more like cradle to cradle. Materials from demolished buildings can go on to have a future life through recycling and reuse.
“For example, it’s possible to avoid demolishing old or undesirable buildings as their concrete structures can stay put and the building can be refurbished.
“Timber, aluminium and glass can be reused or recycled somehow into new products.”
The challenge in the building industry right now is to get past one-off cases and move into a mainstream situation where net zero construction is the norm. Prasad hopes the guide will also help Australia position itself as a leader in net zero construction.
“While the global community is aiming for net zero by 2050, the building sector has much greater potential and opportunity to reach net zero operational emissions by 2030 and a 60 per cent reduction in embodied carbon by 2030,” he says.
“These are the goals our guide aims to achieve.
“While our guide details advanced knowledge and research, practical design approaches, and benchmarks and targets for industry to be informed, there is another vital lever required to make net zero possible.
“Governments should mandate net zero construction codes, which will push for best performance to achieve net zero. They should lead by example and ensure all public buildings are net zero carbon and provide subsidies and rebates to incentivise change.”

On the money
The WA government has brought into effect the second stage of payment security changes for contractors, subcontractors and suppliers
The second stage of the Building and Construction Industry (Security of Payment) Act 2021 implements an Australian-first retention trust scheme that applies down the supply chain, the Western Australian government has announced.
New eligible Western Australian contracts valued at $1 million or more for construction work or related goods and services, and under which retention money is withheld, will require a contracting party to deposit the funds in a separate trust account. The new requirement means better protections for subcontractor retention money in the event of insolvency on a project.
Greater powers enabling the Building Services Board to exclude people with a history of financial failure from starting or continuing a building service business have also come into force. In addition, building service contractors who fail to pay court and adjudication debts to subcontractors can now be denied registration or receive disciplinary action.
These latest measures build on other protections available under the Act that were introduced last year, which include more structured and transparent payment processes and an effective dispute resolution pathway to recover money.
The third stage of security of payment changes will come into effect in February 2024, with the retention trust scheme extending to applicable contracts valued at $20,000 or more, and new rules introduced to uphold fairer contracting practices.
Fact sheets, videos and other resources with more information on the new laws are available on the Building and Energy website: dmirs.wa.gov.au/ securityofpayment
RETROFITTING
Retrofit revolution
Manitou Group and Kiloutou have signed a partnership agreement for retrofit electrification of Manitou telehandlers
Manitou Group has signed an exclusive 12-month partnership agreement with European rental company Kiloutou to offer electrification kits for Manitou’s used telehandlers. Retrofitting these machines will extend their useful life while reducing their environmental impact, in particular their carbon emissions, in accordance with the commitments that both groups have made in their respective CSR roadmaps.
This project, which will roll out over the next two years, is aimed at testing the technical and economic feasibility of electrifying telehandlers initially designed and marketed with internal combustion engines. The first phase of the test is being carried out on a high lifting height telehandler demonstrator in Kiloutou’s rental fleet.
During 2023, this internal combustion telehandler will be dismantled and reassembled with an electrification kit at Manitou Group’s production plant in Ancenis, then tested in real-life conditions at Kiloutou’s test centre near Lille.
After the machine clears the test, Manitou Group will be in a position to offer electrification kits for machines refurbished using new or pre-owned parts, exclusively to Kiloutou Group. This distribution will be carried out for a period of 12 months from the beginning of 2024, on several machines in Kiloutou’s fleet.
These kits comprise several
components, including a lithiumion battery, and open the door to switching from internal combustion engines to extremely low-carbon full-electric motors.
“We are currently rolling out our choice of low-emissions machines in our Oxygen range,” Manitou Group president and CEO Michel Denis says.
“We were also looking for an alternative to our internal-combustion machines that are already in operation, to take the next step in this direction. Kiloutou is particularly open to this kind of solution, so we will be working together to create retrofit kits.”
Most of the retrofitting work in this partnership will involve machines that Kiloutou has had in its rental fleet for about five years. This option addresses the need to speed up the transition to lower-carbon machinery. By extending the useful life of equipment that is otherwise fully operational, retrofits combine sustainability and circularity. Once they have been retrofitted with electrification kits, the revamped machines will be included in the Impakt range of environmentallyfriendly alternatives, and be available in Kiloutou branches in France.

Jobs boost SKILLS
Applications are now open for Queensland’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative as it opens its first funding round for the 2023–24 financial year
The state government says the initiative will assist up to 15,000 disadvantaged Queenslanders each year to gain skills, qualifications and experience to enter and stay in the workforce.
Work skills traineeships are available for sectors including construction, where trainees can achieve a CPC10120 Certificate I in Construction.
“Seventy-six per cent of participants find work or take on further training around 12 months after completing a Skilling Queenslanders for Work program,” Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer says.
“We are looking for new and innovative ideas that will see vulnerable Queenslanders across the state receive the support they need to find meaningful work.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work provides skills development, training and job opportunities for young people, mature-age job seekers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, women re-entering the workforce, veterans,
recently released prisoners and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds through a suite of targeted skills and training programs.
“It not only benefits the state by delivering job-ready staff to employers, but it also ensures those looking for work have pathways to assist them.
“The initiative supports many focus areas from the Good people. Good jobs: Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022–2032, which aims to attract, connect and educate a thriving workforce to set our state up for success now and into the future.
“We’re calling for project applications from our current providers and interested community-based organisations that can deliver career advice, job preparation skills, foundation skills and individual case management, so Queenslanders can confidently join the workforce.”
The funding application round will close on March 30, 2023. For info can be found at: https://desbt.qld.gov.au/ training/community-orgs/funded/ sqw/workskills
A tugboat and a floating pontoon were required to make a delivery of a new wheel loader across Lake Thun, near the Swiss capital of Bern, for firm AG Balmholz recently.
The delivery was completed early in the morning and with fog still drifting across the lake.
Such a route was required given the AG Balmholz quarry’s position within the Bernese foothills of the Alps. Given the terrain of the hills, transporting sizeable goods and mining materials often proves a challenge.
Once delivered, the L260H loader was quickly put to work at the quarry where it began shifting the hard rock found in the hills.
The quarry is just one of 10 in the whole of Switzerland and is a source of a particularly dense rock.
The loader was the first machine AG Balmholz has purchased from Volvo CE.
“When it came to the new acquisition, we were particularly impressed with the breakout force of the Volvo wheel loader,” says AG Balmholz managing director Christoph Künzi.
“Overall, the L260H came out on top in terms of price, performance and consumption.”

Best in show
Continental, Jungheinrich, Still, Aisle-Master and Crown have all been nominated in a global awards showcase that sets out to find the world’s best intralogistics products and systems
The developers of 25 different products and solutions will compete for the International Intralogistics and Forklift Truck of the Year (IFOY) awards in Germany later this year.
All nominees will complete a threestage audit, comprising a functional test, an innovation check by academics and testing by a jury of trade journalists in late March before the award is announced.
Continental Automotive has been nominated in the automated guided vehicle category for its AMR IL 1200 – designed for use in warehouses or logistics centres, as well as for production logistics with heavy pallets, as in the automotive and metalworking industries. With its integrated lifting system and various body options, the AMR IL 1200 can transport pallets weighing up to 1.09 tonnes at two metres per second.
“The IFOY Award is considered the definitive innovation award in intralogistics,” the company says.
“The bandwidth of IFOY applicants is traditionally large and very international in the field of automated guided vehicles, which for some years now have not only come from the intralogistics sector.”
Other nominees are Hikorobot for its F4100C forklift mobile robot for narrow aisle applications, China’s Youibot for its AT-100 autonomous mobile robot and Agilox’s omnidirectional dolly mover.
There are awards for high and low lift warehouse trucks, software, intralogistics robots and ‘start-up of the year’ as well as a special award for other features.
UAE-based Al Shirawi Enterprises’ forklift brand Still secured nominations in both warehouse truck categories, with its EXH
Plant & Equipment
14-20 Plus Series hand pallet truck to contend against US-based Raymond’s end rider electric pallet jack for the low lift award.
The high lift award will be between Still’s PXV vertical order picker, which offers a picking height of up to 14.5m; the SP1500 from Crown with its redesigned operator platform and 10.2m lift height; and the stand-on, articulated Aisle-Master OP Combilift, which has a 12.1m lift height.
Award nominees in the Intralogistics Robot category are China’s Zhejiang Libiao Robots for its Airrob container handing robotic system and German companies Volume Lagersysteme for the Volume Dive container warehouse system and Jungheinrich for its PowerCube automated compact storage system for containers.
Jungheinrich was also nominated for a special award for its addedView fork camera, which scans barcodes in warehouses while a vehicle operator is moving, telling them if they are going the wrong way.
Its competitors for that award are the Swiss-made Kemaro 900 industrial dry-cleaning robot, which cleans large areas under machines and equipment; and the Nimmsta light tag, which lights up when a worker tasked with finding an item approaches.
Software award nominations went to DS Automation for the Arcos package; IdentPro for its Warehouse Execution System; and Mobile Easykey.
The nominated start-ups are: 1MRobotics, Loady, ff Fördersysteme, Hunic, Predimo, Sentics and sereact.
Aiming high
If your work takes you off the ground and up high, Queensland’s Hi Reach Rentals has the team and the equipment to get you to work in the best way possible.
Company managing director Colin Fox says the company offers a variety of specialised elevated work platforms for different customer needs.
“We’re a very diverse business,” he says.
“There are a lot of people that deal with boom and scissor lifts, there’s companies that deal with scaffolding, and then there’s companies that deal with mast climbers.”
Hi Reach Rentals, he says, offers them all, along with swing stages, spider lifts, under bridge inspection units and the Nifty Lift Equipment range from the UK.
The range of different equipment on offer means Hi Reach’s experienced team can provide expert advice on the most cost-effective equipment choice for a job.
“We can offer a variety of solutions for getting people to a workplace high in the air,” Fox says.
For specialised equipment, Hi Reach can also offer the services of its operators, many of whom have worked in the industry for years and use their experience and networking skills to solve problems as they arise.
With a full-time staff of about 65, Hi Reach provides equipment for special projects all around Australia and New Zealand, though Fox adds the company’s focus area is in and around southeast Queensland.
Fox says his goal is to offer a high standard of service to customers rather than merely increasing volumes – with that focus including the provision of spare parts, mechanical services and training courses for working at height.
