Leading the way
Brooks Equipment is continuing to go from strength to strength with a wide range of top-class equipment from leading brands
In the summer of 2020, Brooks Equipment opened its doors with a single dealership for Husqvarna construction equipment. Just over two years later, the company has grown to become Australia’s leading dealership for Sany, Genmac, Italdem, Chicago Pneumatic and Euromacchine products.
So how did this come about?
Managing director Stuart Brooks and general manager Nathan Fenemer say that they recognised the importance of supplying their customers with good quality, reliable equipment. This led them to research established brands that were internationally recognised for their reliability, performance and ready supply of parts.
“Customer focus has always been the driving force when considering the equipment that we sell,” Brooks says.
“When we put the Brooks name behind a product, we want to make sure that it exceeds our customers’ expectations.”
When researching brands of generators, Genmac stood out to Brooks Equipment. These Italian manufactured generators are
silent, reliable and durable. Brooks Equipment imported a range of Genmac generators from 5kVA to 300kVA and started selling them throughout its 20 Australia-wide branches.
The brand became so popular with Australian customers that, in January 2023, Brooks Equipment was named as a worldwide Top 10 distributor for Genmac.
“The fact that Australian companies are coming back to us to buy multiple Genmac units is a testament to the performance of these generators,” Fenemer says.
“Our customers know that, when they purchase a Genmac from Brooks, it’s going to be reliable.”
It’s not only with generator sales that Brooks Equipment is achieving top results. With mining and construction industries experiencing rapid growth, Brooks Equipment wanted to partner with a quality brand of large construction equipment. Brooks found that Sany shared the same ambitions, commitment to quality and customer service. Through its hire department, Brooks put Sany excavators through rigorous trials in WA, in some of the
toughest conditions in the world, and the equipment exceeded all expectations.
“Every model that we tested did not miss a beat in over 12 months of hard work,” Fenemer says.
“We know and trust this product and have first-hand experience that we can share with our customers.”
Sany was already the leading brand of excavator sales worldwide when Brooks Equipment was awarded the dealership for WA, but here in Australia Sany was relatively unheard of.
Over the last two years, Brooks Equipment has supported Sany to become one of the top three bestselling brands of crawler excavator in WA. Brooks is also the exclusive authorised dealer for Sany in the Northern Territory and has recently expanded its dealership offering to include excavator, loader and piling rigs in Queensland.
What has driven this success?
The name Brooks has a 44-year history of delivering first class customer service.
“We understand that the sale doesn’t end when the customer walks out the door with their new piece of equipment,” Fenemer says.
“We continue to support our clients with a full range of stocked parts and trained service technicians to keep their equipment in top condition.”
Brooks Equipment has the full range of Sany excavators in stock on the showroom floor right now. They start at the 1.75-tonne mini excavators, going up to the 78-tonne mining giants. It also has a great range of Genmac generators, compactors, air compressors, lighting towers and rock breakers. Finance is available on all equipment.

A cut above
Since arriving Down Under, Diamond Mowers’ Australian distributor Colbrook Industries has seen steady interest in the USbuilt attachments, with business development manager Hayley Plageman expecting that to continue into the new year.
“We’ve had people asking for a Diamond Mowers drum mulcher for their excavators for quite some time,” Plageman says.
“We have been working with the team at Diamond Mowers in the US to develop and bring them here, so we are pretty stoked to actually have them here now.
“We’ve had a couple go out already and from all reports they are exceeding expectations.”
Colbrook Industries offers two sizes of the EX Drum Mulcher DC Pro X with 30-inch and 50-inch (76.2cm and 1.2m) widths for machines from 4.5t to 10t.
The mulcher is equipped with a Rexroth 63cc two-speed adjustable displacement hydraulic motor that provides a class-leading torque to power ratio when handling large amounts of material, while accommodating the higher flow rates provided by modern excavators.
Given the power capabilities,
the drum mulcher can power through material up to eight inches (20cm) in diameter, making it the ideal attachment for a range of land clearing and vegetation management applications such as for building development, utility and roadside maintenance, clearing and reclaiming land for agricultural use and waterway clearance and maintenance.
The mulcher’s optimised infeed system differentiates the attachment from other excavator drum mulchers on the market, achieving greater productivity per pass. The forward drum exposure works by feeding material from left to right, with wood turned into chips inside the drum, removing the need for re-processing.
To best serve its customers, Colbrook Industries run and tests all of its products in real world applications. Keeping the team well versed in the demands and functions of the range, Colbrook recently purchased an excavator to put the new EX Drum Mulcher Pro X through its paces.
“We want our team to know the machines inside and out, to know how to hook them up and run them,” Plageman says.
“We want all of our team to actually
know firsthand how the attachments operate. It’s hard to sell something if you’re just looking at a bit of paper – you can’t be passionate about it, you can’t have confidence in it.
“The whole team will get in and have a go, running the machines through different sorts of materials to get a feel for them and see how they perform. We want to know what the strong points are and what the weaknesses are because, in this tough industry, nothing is unbreakable.
“We want to know all of the ins and outs of the machines so we can confidently put them out there and properly support our customers.
“We don’t want to put anything out there that isn’t going to perform in the Aussie conditions. It’s very different running machines on the soft woods over in the United States compared to coming here and running it on hard timbers.”
The EX Drum Mulcher DC Pro X was developed and engineered for excavators, which means the EX Drum Mulcher DC Pro X could also have use
for businesses and contractors who don’t operate strictly in the forestry sector.
With construction and earthmoving projects often dependant on weather, Plageman says having an excavator mulcher in the tool kit could help boost business productivity when typical earthmoving work is forced to stop.
“I feel the excavator drum mulcher is a really good tool to add value and profitability to existing earthmoving businesses,” Plageman says.
“Often when the weather is too wet, earthmoving has to stop. But this doesn’t necessarily mean the income has to stop – you can always hook up the drum mulcher and get back to work.
“I think it would be adding profitability to these businesses, making what would normally be downtime for them into a bit of a money spinner.”

Victoria’s Aerolite Quarries is flat out producing thousands of tonnes of construction materials a day for large infrastructure projects, so it needs a fleet of highperforming machinery that can handle the pressure. With a new Hyundai HX500L excavator and Rokbak RA30 articulated hauler from Porter Group recently joining the fleet, operator comfort and excellent visibility are proving their worth at the rock face

Based half an hour north of Geelong in Victoria, Aerolite Quarries supplies scoria and basalt-based construction materials to Melbourne and its surrounds.
The quarry site in Anakie was bought by current owner Kenneth Jarvis in 1996. General manager Trevor Bartlett joined 13 years ago and ever since has been running the site with a mixture of machinery brands, including a collection of Hyundai excavators and wheel loaders as well as three Rokbak/ Terex haulers from Porter Group.
With business going strong, several new machines have arrived from Porter Group this year – a HX500L excavator, HL970-9 wheel loader, HL770-9 wheel loader and a Rokbak RA30 articulated hauler.
“Our key products are the seven to 10mm drainage for plumbers and the 20mm NDCR, which is a nondescript crushed rock that
we use for road base and for the overpasses that we’ve done all throughout Victoria,” Bartlett says.
“Scoria is a very light honeycomb volcanic rock, which is important due to its very high strength rate as well as low tonnes to cubic metre. This allows more product at less weight to be delivered, lowering carbon footprint.
“We’re one of the biggest scoria suppliers in Victoria and we’re just flat out all the time. We’ve done a lot of projects where we are supplying 50 or 60,000 tonnes over a time period of months, hence the need for more and more equipment.
“We’ve just completed the Mount Derrimut Bypass, which is a radial wall bypass, and we’re just about to begin the rail duplication from Waurn Ponds to South Geelong, enabling more trains and no traffic holdups for daily commuters. That is an 18-month project requiring around 135,000 tonnes of material.”
On the move
Covering 1,800 hectares, Aerolite Quarries contains two scoria quarries and a basalt bluestone quarry, with Porter Group equipment working across the site. This includes two 50-tonne excavators, two 48-tonne excavators, one 35-tonne excavator, three 30-tonne haulage trucks and six Hyundai wheel loaders.
“The two HX500L excavators are doing the major mining work, digging into the mountain and filling up the Rokbak and Terex trucks. They then take the material down to be processed at our two fixed crushing plants,” Bartlett says.
“It’s about a 100m trek from the
hill to the crushing plants and each excavator gets three trucks at a time. The trucks are in a constant circuit going back and forth between the fixed plants and the mining open area.
“They have buckets and rippers, while for the harder material we put on a hydraulic hammer.”
As to why he chose the HX500L model, Bartlett says he was looking for a versatile machine that was robust enough to dig into the rock but small enough to feed mobile plants if required. He says the quick hitch system is invaluable as the excavators have to regularly switch between the bucket, ripper and hammer.
“It’s all automatic, so it virtually takes the operator two minutes to swap attachments, and off they go again. It’s very convenient to use and the trucks aren’t waiting for the excavators – it’s a very quick transition,” he says.
“We need to process about 1,000 to 1,500 tonnes per plant per day, and we have two very large fixed plants, so in total we’re seeing between 2,500 and 3,000 tonnes of material processed a day as a result of the excavators.”
Bartlett says that he finds the HX500L excavators to be highly reliable machines and his operators love working in them – with the Advanced Around View

Monitoring system of cameras being a key feature.
“It’s like being in an armchair – they sit there in padded seats and airconditioned cabins, with great vision out of the cab and tinted windows,” he says.
“It’s a great environment for them. Compared to older units, there’s a massive gap in terms of operator comfort.
“The excavators are constantly moving into new areas to dig, with a lot of reversing back and forth, making sure the area good enough for the trucks to back up to so they can be loaded. So, the surround cameras are ideal for them, it makes it so much easier.”
A brand new Rokbak RA30 articulated hauler was immediately put to work recently upon its arrival on site, joining two older Terex TA300 haulers. Bartlett says that, with Terex truck rebranding to Rokbak a few years ago, he was keen on staying with the brand as it makes managing spare parts more convenient.
“There’s no spare vehicle, so we can’t have a vehicle out for long,” he explains.
“We do a service on a Saturday and it needs to be back at work on Monday, so the consistency of maintenance is very important. Those trucks will always be the same, so we can easily replace bits and that’s important for us.
“The Rokbak is efficient and consistent at what it does. This is a 30tonne truck, but as scoria is so light, it’s actually carrying 22 tonnes in a load, so they handle exceptionally well. And they’re efficient.
“We have a small area that the trucks travel over – lot of mines have two or three kilometres from the mine face to the to the crushing face, but here it’s very efficient, backwards and forwards, in and out. The trucks run around in circles very quickly, so it’s important that no one is waiting for the materials to be to be loaded or unloaded.”
Again, he says the operators love the new Rokbak as motion from driving on rough ground is minimal.

“The seats are air cushioned, so you can bounce up and down with them, it just doesn’t matter how bad the road gets. The cabin is almost like an independent capsule if you like – the driver comfort is fantastic,” Bartlett says.
“The vision and the cameras are also very good. There are no blind spots, so the drivers can see everything, which is critical for us. The side mirrors are big, the camera works exceptionally well and the view through the windows in all three directions is perfect for us. And the driver’s seat is adjustable, so it doesn’t matter whether you’re five foot two or five foot 10, you get great visibility.”

Porter Group
Aerolite Quarries has been sourcing machinery from Porter Group for six or seven years, but has a long history with Hyundai machinery preceding that.
“We’ve always enjoyed the Hyundai equipment because it’s more equitably priced and the parts are always available, which is critical for us,” Bartlett says.
“With other brands you often have to wait for parts to come in from outside Australia, whereas Porter have enough stock throughout the country that whatever we need will be sourced from one of its distribution centres. When Porter Group took over the rights to Hyundai we moved across to them and they have proved to be efficient with that process.
“Porter Group have some very good spare parts people and field service technicians. It was critical for us to know the field service people so we can get advice on how to fix things, even if they are under warranty, so we can do
it ourselves. Dandenong to Anakie is a two-hour drive so we need to be able to get things running as we don’t have any spare equipment. Porter have highly qualified people who are very communicative and very helpful.”
With future plans including a third, even larger, fixed crushing plant on site to meet the high demand for scoria and basalt, Bartlett says the new machinery will continue to flow in order to keep up with the volumes required.
“The new plant will virtually be double the size of what we currently have because the order book is so extensive into next year,” Bartlett says.
“At the rate we’re going, we’ll be looking at another excavator and probably two more trucks and two more wheel loaders over the next 12 to 18 months.”

Key milestone
Onetrak is the Australian dealer for major brands Tigercat, Hidromek, Striker, Anaconda, Fuchs and Dressta. The company has locations in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland.
This year Onetrak celebrates its 15th anniversary in Victoria. The first Victorian premises were located in Dandenong up until 2016 when the company relocated to 1–5 Marlo Place, in Hallam, a suburb southeast of Melbourne, after having outgrown the previous workshop and office spaces.
Onetrak Hallam is always buzzing with activity, the yard is stocked with new equipment and the premises houses Onetrak’s central warehouse distribution for spare parts along with a large rental fleet.
Rhodes Cousland manages the rental fleet and has been with the company for just under eight years.
“Onetrak has given me the opportunity to build Onetrak Rental from the ground up,” Cousland says.
“Being a family-owned company, relationships are key to everything we do and at the core of us growing the rental fleet has been the longstanding relationships we’ve built with customers.”
Rental co-ordinator Melannie Amani is also celebrating her own work anniversary this year having reached 10 years with the business.
“I’m working with a great team at Onetrak and know I have the support I need to carry out my job,” she says.
“My favourite part of my role is being able to deal with customers on a daily basis, whether it be an engineer or someone from the accounts department. I’ve been able to make so many great connections so far.”
Onetrak is a small but flexible company with a can-do attitude across the business. One of the key focuses within the organisation is to ensure all staff have growth and development opportunities available to them. Onetrak national product support manager for forestry Jotham Allwright has held a few different roles within the company.
“I’ve been lucky enough to work my way through a few different roles at Onetrak. Starting as a field service technician working in the Mount Gambier area for several years, this then led into a service manager role looking after the service team in Mount Gambier. Now I’m lucky enough to focus on forestry equipment,” he says.
The family business culture is a stand out aspect of Onetrak, says national product support manager Faysal Berdilek, along with the wide variety of work that takes place in the world of heavy machinery.
“Onetrak deals in some great products across multiple equipment brands within construction, forestry, materials handling and mineral processing equipment industries,” Berdilek says.
“There’s never a dull day and the opportunities are endless. I’ve always
enjoyed a challenge, developing product performance solutions and management systems is what I like to do. At Onetrak innovation is always encouraged.”
Being a national company there are opportunities to travel and see different places – something national sales manager industrial material handling Sam Powell values in his role.
“I love my role as I get to visit customers all across the country,” Powell says.
“It’s always amazing how many different ways there are to crush, screen and move different materials – I’m always learning something new. The best part about working with Onetrak is the teamwork. Everyone’s happy to help, decisions are made quickly and everyone has a voice.”
Managing director David Hazell says that the move to Melbourne 15 years ago was a significant step in the business’ development as it paved the way for further expansion across Australia. Hallam remains a significant hub for Onetrak’s national business activities, with many of the company’s key management, parts and product support teams based there.
“Today I’m very proud to say we have built a strong team at Hallam and we are still focused on building further capacity into our service offering in Melbourne to assist our Victorian clients better,” he says.
“Our business plan sees expansion of the rental fleet and our specialist product lines into the market. A service centre in west Melbourne is on track to be completed by the end of 2024.”
If you are interested in joining the Onetrak team there are currently some exciting job opportunities on the go. Visit www.onetrak.com. au/careers to view all vacancies. You can learn more about Onetrak by visiting www.onetrak.com.au or call through to your nearest branch on 1300 727 520.
Smart solution
With no maintenance required, no call-out fees and no fuss, the PC120M portable hose crimper from Continental is a simple, lowcost solution to get your machinery back up and running again if you experience a hydraulic hose failure in the field
Continental will be on site at Diesel Dirt & Turf this month showing off its new portable PC120M hose crimper, which ContiTech Industrial Fluid Solutions regional sales manager –Western Australia Lee Cranswick says made quite a stir when shown for the first time last year.
“We were showing visitors how it worked and everyone wanted to buy it straight away – it was super successful,” he says.
“So, this year, we will have it on display again. We’ve got stock, with more on the way. It’s been very popular with farmers and those who want a portable crimper for their machinery.”
Used to crimp down a hose fitting on up to three quarter spiral and one-inch braided hoses, this is Continental’s first portable crimper. Cranswick says the portability aspect – with the PC120M weighing just 26kg – is key for usability and convenience.
“When you have this crimper, you don’t have to worry about expensive callout fees – this is on the back of
the ute and can be used with a hand pump or an airline. It’s a cost-effective machine for people who need to do on-site repairs and keep their equipment going,” he says.
He points out that it’s particularly popular with machinery owners who are working in rural areas, who may
be a significant distance from a hose repair shop. Rather than waiting for hours to get their machine up and running again after a breakdown, with this portable crimper they can resolve the issue themselves and get back to the job at hand.
“You can keep the equipment going, reduce downtime and increase productivity,” he explains.
“The big thing is cost effectiveness. It’s a low-cost product and you can save a lot of money through not needing to call out technicians to repair machinery.
“It covers 80 per cent of machinery requirements and there’s no maintenance required. When you get these big crimpers, you’ve got to regularly maintain them, calibrate them, put grease in the grease points. There’s no maintenance required for the PC120 – it’s just pick it up and go use it.”
Cranswick adds that it’s a straightforward tool to use and on-site training will be available at DDT to give interested buyers a run through how it works.
“We’ve got our local hose technician here in WA flying over to DDT and they will be showing people how to use it, how to connect up the air compressor or the foot pump and how to change the dies out and use the micrometer,” he says.
“For DDT we will also be shipping across our 20-foot container test rig as well. So, inside that, we’ll be displaying our capabilities in terms of pressure testing our matched hoses and fittings to meet and/or exceed burst pressures, validating crimp specs and discussing our value added capabilities outside of our core material driven solutions.
“We look forward to showing people what we can do.”

Reducing cost blowouts
Cost and budget blowouts have been occupying the discussions of industry, politicians and the media – and rightly so. The truth is a little loose around the cause of the cost increases but, regardless, we have a problem unless policy makers embrace the truth and govern so that we can deliver the infrastructure this country needs.
The Queensland state opposition recently raised in parliament the issue of cost blowouts of projects. It sampled 23 construction contracts that had initial budgets of approximately $15 billion and calculated that final or awarded costs are collectively approximately $10 billion higher.
The state government’s response was that the cost was attributed to material increases, pointing to the Infrastructure Market Capacity 2022 Report from Infrastructure Australia.
It is a fact that global and domestic supply issues and associated inflation has affected the cost of projects. What was not mentioned is that the application of the Best Practice Industry Conditions in Queensland (BPIC) had a profound effect on the cost. Industry has calculated that the initial increase was between 20 and 30 per cent.
BPIC is a state government requirement and, while aimed at projects over $100 million, the need to compete for labour meant the reach of these rates and conditions within this policy was spread well beyond these projects, including the supply chain.
Infrastructure Australia summarised its analysis of cost
increases on infrastructure projects. It found that the cost of construction material rose approximately 24 per cent. Reinforcing steel has increased by a minimum of 40 per cent.
Most of the key findings and recommendations in the report have been embraced by the state government. These key elements include: increasing pipeline transparency, certainty and confidence; increasing collaboration through the whole project cycle; reducing risk by consistently adopting appropriate best practice due diligence; and increasing the attractiveness of the industry to engage more workers, including more women.
There are an additional two key elements that must be implemented with urgency:
• bu ilding support for the circular economy
• delivering a roadmap to improve infrastructure industry productivity.
Infrastructure Australia states in its report that around 27 per cent of conventional materials used in construction projects could be sourced from recycled materials. The authors of the current prescriptive specifications that we construct to are
slow to make changes that would open up the full potential of this issue.
Opening the industry to the circular economy will in part address the issues of low productivity. As stated in the report, construction sector multifactor productivity has fallen on average of 0.1 per cent per annum since 1990. While elements of other recommendations can improve the productivity of the sector, a top to bottom review is needed.
Prescriptive specifications that outline what materials to use and how to incorporate them to achieve an outcome need to be removed.
BPIC is another barrier to delivering positive productivity outcomes. A key element missing in BPIC is the recognition of each company, including their subcontractors and operating environment.
Civil construction companies in Queensland and Australia are generally multi-disciplined and work for varied clients in varied geographical locations. Pattern agreements such as BPIC ignore this situation.
It has already been observed that the flow-on effect of BPIC beyond the major projects they target are forcing contractors to not participate in major projects to try and isolate themselves from the effects of BPIC.
This is showing to be problematic as the competition for labour, combined with the influence of BPIC, is having a negative impact on other sectors of the industry.
Local governments are not immune, with their workforces now being mobilised to work on these major projects.
The end result is an increase of the cost on the delivery of infrastructure across all sectors that did not need to happen.
As we move forward towards the state government’s handing down of its budget for 2023/2034, we have a concern that the number of projects that should be delivered will be cut.
A quote from the Deputy Premier was: “Construction costs have increased – you either fund the increased cost or you cut the projects and slash tens of thousands of jobs they are supporting.”
Let’s hope that he is true to the first part of his statement.

A NSW electrical maintenance and repair specialist has enlisted the help of Toyota Material Handling Australia’s (TMHA) range of Huski Construction Equipment to make the most of its business operations.
For over 30 years Sydney-based Allelec Services has provided electric maintenance and repair to commercial businesses such as supermarkets and shopping centres.
Roughly 18 months ago, Allelec director Alan Borland needed to upgrade his mini-excavator to a bigger unit and landed on the Huski M-38U mini-excavator with its 3.8-tonne capacity.
Borland reached out to the local TMHA team led by area sales manager Peter Bower, choosing Huski Construction Equipment for its excellent reputation for reliability.
Following the purchase of the Huski excavator, Borland was so impressed he subsequently added a Huski SV08ENL scissor lift to the fleet.
“We had a smaller scissor lift but wanted the Huski one for the height – it’s a 26-footer – and its slimline design helps with accessing signage and things like that while still being manoeuvrable, without a monstrous deck on it,” he says.
“The scissor lift is very handy, it’s a narrow unit but with the extra height, it’s been very good.
“We used it for lighting upgrade works at a Macquarie shopping centre and for a new signage installation at Chipping Norton, so that’s been very versatile as well.”
Borland says he prefers owning
his own equipment as it allows the business to be flexible and respond quickly to any issue, eliminating the need to find suitable contractors, which can be costly and time consuming.
TMHA prides itself on offering excellent customer service by developing real relationships with clients. Huski Construction Equipment area sales manager Peter Bower helped establish a strong relationship with Allelec Services early on by assisting with the purchase process.
“There were a couple of little questions at the start when understanding the machine, so I rang Peter about it,” Borland says.
“Peter and his boss came straight out the following day, helped us out, found out what the problem was and sorted it out. It was immediate.”
Since becoming a TMHA customer in 2021, Borland has been satisfied
with the products and service provided, stating he would be more than happy to continue his patronage in the future.
“I’ve been super happy, no problems at all,” he says.
“I wouldn’t have any hesitation getting something else off them. They’ve always responded to us straight away, so there have been no problems at all.”
Borland even mentioned that he has begun recommending Huski products to friends and colleagues due to their excellent performance.
“I’ve mentioned to a few people about the Huski excavator, that I’m very happy about it. I’d have no hesitation in recommending it,” he says.
He also stated that Bower would be his first port of call if Allelec ever wanted to add more equipment to its stable, due to the performance of the existing machines and the service provided.

Short and sweet
Offering outstanding power, versatility and the latest technology, Volvo E-Series excavators are a great option for everyday earthmoving and civil construction jobs, backed by an extensive national product support network from Australian distributor CJD Equipment.
“The E-Series comes with Stage V engines and are classed as one of the most fuel efficient and cleanest engines currently in use in Australia,” CJD Equipment’s Volvo CE national product manager Hayden Grant says.
“The range is designed to work with effortless efficiency, with the reduced swing models in particular offering improved safety for working in tight spaces.”
The Volvo E-Series short swing excavator line up comprises the 14tonne (ECR145E), 23-tonne (ECR235E), and 35-tonne (ECR355E) models. Featuring a narrow body design with a centrally-positioned boom, this enables the excavator to get extremely close to objects and reduces the risk of rear damage to the machine as it swings.
“These models are well-suited for applications where the excavator needs to operate on the side of the road, or somewhere where there’s a lot of obstacles around,” Grant states.
The E-Series is also available with optional Dig Assist technology, which assists operators in achieving their full potential. One of the many programs that utilise the Volvo
Co-Pilot in-cab interface, Dig Assist ensures job parameters are met more accurately with improved site safety.
Volvo Co-Pilot is an interactive display that offers real-time insights into the work being performed, while the ergonomically positioned touchscreen display enables the operator to manage all the excavator functions quickly and simply from a single in-cab system.
“Dig Assist offers exceptional control, whether you’re digging trenches, levelling sites or grading slopes, and provides real-time data for a responsive and efficient operating experience,” Grant says.
“Once the pre-set operating limits are met, the Volvo Co-Pilot automatically alerts the operator through audio and visual signals.”
Dig Assist has three different techassisted options to provide realtime guidance for operators and keep them running as efficiently as possible. The standard 2D package option delivers productive results and simplifies the digging process for complex multidimensional sites. Using the Volvo Co-Pilot screen and GPS, the operator can set the target depth(s) and draw 2D shape designs from the cabin.
Intended for site levelling and profiling slopes, the 2D option uses real-time data to clearly show when target depth/slope levels have been achieved, with less under/ over excavation. The operator can visualise the bucket and the machine’s position with indicator guidelines on the screen.
Dig Assist can also be upgraded to a mid-range option In-Field Design.
“The In-Field Design app provides a stronger excavation accuracy, additionally using GNSS and RTK navigation technology,” Grant says.
“The operator can actually input designs and work to satellite or laser position, so surveyors don’t need to mark out the entire excavation site.”
For more complex and largerscale projects, a 3D option is available that incorporates TopCon and Trimble apps.
Design profiles can be imported from external sources for more accurate and efficient project execution.
“Efficiency is at the core of Volvo’s design to ensure operators reach their full potential and this is integrated into everything, which really sets Volvo apart from the crowd,” Grant says.
For more information on the Volvo E-Series excavator range and Dig Assist Technology, contact your local CJD Equipment branch on 1300 139 804 or visit cjd.com.au
It takes something extra to stand out from the crowd and the Volvo E-Series excavator range – particularly the short swing radius models – do just that, taking productivity and accuracy to the next levelThe short tail swing of the Volvo ECR235E makes it well-suited for more compact sites
Small but mighty
Offered by Brisbane-based crushing and screening manufacturer Precisionscreen, the Contractor 604 screener is designed for the busy operator on the move.
Thanks to its slender axle frame, the screener is extremely manoeuvrable and can be pushed and pulled at the operator’s discretion using a variety of machines including a forklift, telehandler or small wheel loader.
Precisionscreen chief operating officer Jonny McMurtry says the Contractor 604’s versatility is its biggest selling point.
“Probably the most unique thing of our Contractor 604 is it’s the most compact unit we do,” he says.
“It can be pushed and pulled around site using something like a forklift, or it can be done with the telehandler or small loader. It doesn’t take much to move it around because it’s got a tow hitch at the back of the machine.”
Despite its compact stature, the
604 has still developed a reputation for being highly productive onsite. It features a 2.5 square metre hopper and a 1,000mm-wide feed belt that produces an output of 100 tonnes per hour, depending on material density and setup.
The Contractor 604 is 100 per cent manufactured by Precisionscreen to suit Australian conditions and is constructed using robust pressed plates. Whilst in use, operators can hydraulically change the variable screen angle as necessary and can adjust the speed of the feeder.
The Contractor 604 is ideal for screening raw materials such as sand, feedlots, soils, pebbles and road base and is suitable for both smaller enterprises and larger companies that need a compact screener for smaller projects around their sites.
“For example, we have a unit heading to Papa New Guinea next month to do a bit of gravel washing. We have some companies in northern Queensland who use units
like this for pre-coating applications,” McMurtry says.
“I think it’s most effective in fine earth screening – so we’re talking sand, soils, a bit of river gravel. One of the huge benefits of the machine is that it’s got a metre-wide belt and 1,200mm-wide screen box, so it’s super-efficient as soon as material hits the screenbox.
“We do recognise that it has limitations, such as the size of the machine, so while it is adaptable and easily manoeuvrable around site, it can’t do a lot of large streaming applications such as aggregates. But, to effectively remove fine materials such as your topsoil, bedding sands and similar products like that, it’s an extremely cost effective and efficient machine to do that.”
The Contractor 604 is also easy to assemble and can get to work in little time, McMurtry says – requiring approximately half an hour to set up.
“We had an example where we just delivered a machine the other day.
At just over 10.5m long, the Contractor 604 is the most compact screener in Precisionscreen’s product line, but what it lacks in stature it certainly makes up for in productivityThe Contractor 604 is the most compact unit offered by Precisionscreen
Once it was taken off the float, it took about half an hour to 45 minutes, and the guys were up and screening right away,” he says.
“For this type of machine half an hour to set it up is very quick.”
Precisionscreen manufactures the screener in-house at its Wacol facility in Brisbane’s south-west and has seen interest in the 604 increase steadily over the past two years.
As a result of the rising business costs of running crushing and screening equipment, and difficulty getting equipment from overseas, many customers have turned to the proven Australian manufacturer.
“We’re seeing quite a spike in interest for these units, particularly in the past 12 to 18 months, and we think that’s in line with the rising costs of getting screened plants or machines from overseas, as well as just the lack of access to second-hand equipment,” McMurtry says.
“As I said, it’s the reliability of lead time and the reliability of being an Australian manufacturer, as well. So, any problems – which we are not finding many of with these machines –we can deal with quickly and easily.
“I think we’re certainly seeing an
increase in interest and subsequently an increase in the number of sales for these types of machines.”
It takes approximately one month to build a Contractor 604, meaning the turnaround from order to dispatch is around six weeks, McMurtry says. Two units will be available to buy in May and a third will be ready for June.
The Contractor 604 is available
with a variety of options including shredder attachments for soils, manure and composts, a diesel precoat attachment kit and a six-foot by four-foot wash deck.

The JCB Teleskid is making its long-awaited debut in Australia
TELESKID
Worth the wait
JCB’s new teleskid has now arrived in Australia – an innovative combination of a telehandler and a skid steer
Described as the world’s first, and only, skid steer loader and compact track loader with a telescoping boom, the Teleskid is now available to order in Australia through local JCB CEA dealers and comes in wheeled and tracked configurations.
JCB says the Teleskid is a versatile and robust machine, combining the components of a range of machines to perform with the productivity of a forklift, telehandler, compact loader and skid steer all-in-one.
The Teleskid features 4m of vertical reach and a forward reach of 2.5m, meaning it can access areas often not accessible by traditional ski steer loaders. Operators can now reach out and grab trees or branches or dig below ground for up to 90cm as a result of the unique versatility of the Teleskid.
The Teleskid can lift 1,676kg with the boom retracted or 732kg with the boom fully extended.
“The JCB Teleskid is a great option for the conventional constructional market, but there are also so many other applications the machine can be used for,” JCB says.
“The lift capabilities of the Teleskid provide a range of benefits for users. Operators can easily load high-sided truck bodies without needing a ramp, or over the top of structures, such as fencing.”
Side door cabin access is another feature, meaning operators can get in and out of the machine safer and quicker than other traditional skid steers on the market.
Inside the cab, operators can enjoy 60 per cent more visibility thanks to a new cabin design that has a large front windshield that offers 270-degrees of visibility from inside. The windshield can be easily removed for a quick exit in case of emergency while the recessed rear door also provides increased protection from damage.
EXCAVATORS
Brand new
LiuGong has announced that its new mini excavator F series range is now available Down Under
The F-Series improves on the previous E-Series mini excavators, with higher levels of safety and comfort, LiuGong says.
Mini excavators can handle a plethora of tasks, from foundation work to landscaping, demolition jobs and construction projects, all providing challenges that can include working in confined spaces and with limited visibility.
The new F Series mini excavator range has a compact design that is easy to transport, powerful and comfortable to operate, simple to use, service and maintain and costeffective to run.
The option of auto idling is an intelligent feature that decreases and increases engine speed as required, ensuring high levels of fuel efficiency and high flow auxiliary lines are standard.
An additional counterweight can allow the machines to be fitted with additional work tools to suit multiple job sites, while a range of buckets are available to accommodate various tasks.
The proportional load sensing hydraulics deliver precise and smooth operation for optimal grading performance and control. An electro-proportional auxiliary line provides easy and accurate control of attachments, while new dozer blade geometry allows the bucket and blade to work efficiently together to remove materials.
The LiuGong F series range is powered by a Stage V Yanmar engine and Kawasaki pumps.
With a compact design, the new LiuGong F Series can be easily transported between sites
The LiuGong 9018, a 1.8-tonne mini-excavator, boasts adjustable tracks and class-leading cab size for operator comfort.
Both the 9027 (2.7-tonne) and the 9035 (3.5-tonne) mini excavators are zero-swing models and the 9035 has an air-conditioned cabin.
Jason Lyall, business development manager for CDA, a distributor of LiuGong equipment, says the LiuGong brand was enjoying a spike in demand as more operators were getting to know the equipment and this will be boosted further by the release of this mini excavator range.
“There continues to be a great response to the brand and product feedback has been really solid,” Lyall says.
“When you consider the comparative total cost of ownership and low maintenance associated with LiuGong machines, the decision is an easy one.”
He says value for money is a real strength for the LiuGong machines.
“They are easy to use, and customers recognise they are buying a quality machine that does the job at a very affordable price,” Lyall says.
The new range is now available from distributors across Australia.

LOADERS
Electric loader
Volvo CE has created an electric version of its L120 wheel loader for the European market
Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has developed a solution to convert the L120 wheel loader to electric power.
Developed in conjunction with partner Parker Hannifin and converted by Volvo Group’s own CE Engineering Solutions – the 20-ton (18.1 tonne) L120H Electric Conversion will be commercially available for selected customers in Europe during 2023.
This latest collaboration to expand its line of electric wheel loaders follows Volvo CE’s investment in Dutch manufacturer Limach, announced back in June, to broaden the company’s electric excavator portfolio.
This partnership approach, which allows for speedier implementation to the market, happens in parallel with the company’s continued development of more electric solutions – like the EC230 Electric, a 23-ton (20.9 tonne) battery electric excavator, built on Volvo CE’s own advanced technology.
Powered by 240kWh batteries, the L120H has a runtime of approximately five hours in most medium-duty applications and is estimated to charge from 0–100 per cent in 1.5–2 hours.
The L120H Electric Conversion includes comfort drive control, load assist with on-board weighing plus radar detection with its new collision mitigation system. In addition, the L120H Electric Conversion will allow the operator to check battery and charging status and to preheat the cab.
Depending on market demand, it brings the possibility to convert existing customers’ L120 wheel loaders to electric in the future.
WORKPLACE SAFETY
VR training tools
Victoria University researchers have developed virtual reality tools to improve training and safety on Australian construction sites
Victoria University head of built environment Professor Zora Vrcelj and head of IT Professor Yuan Miao and their teams have combined high-tech tools with engineering and architecture to improve safety training in the construction industry.
With the help of a construction simulator (COSI) with virtual reality (VR) at VU’s Werribee Campus, the researchers want to reduce workplace injuries and deaths. COSI’s fully-immersive VR experience allows trainees to use high-tech goggles and equipment to enter and explore a detailed simulation of a construction site to learn about safety – rather than being taught through an instruction booklet or computer modules.
The simulator means users can learn to climb ladders, move equipment, work in a confined space or walk along narrow scaffolding without any risk.
Interest has already been expressed by city councils, large construction companies and the Victorian Building Authority – the state’s chief industry regulator. Vrcelj says the project will help modernise the construction industry, which is currently among the least digitised industries in
so construction workers can learn in a virtual environment
Australia, leading to high rates of worksite injuries, a lack of quality control and inefficiencies.
The researchers are also helping to modernise the profession of building surveying. Traditionally, surveyors conduct mandatory inspections of buildings during construction with a checklist, as they assess the framework, electrics, plumbing and design of a building.
“The surveyor comes, checks that everything is up to code, ticks the boxes, then leaves. But if something changes that affects the build before the next inspection, no one has any idea what’s been done or where the alterations have been made,” Vrcelj says.
Instead, the VU researchers have developed a cloud-based platform where photographs and 360-degree scans of the building are uploaded and can be accessed remotely in real time from a smartphone or iPad. This means there are chains of evidence when things go wrong, but more importantly, early opportunities to prevent defects from happening in the first place.
SKID STEER
Small and mighty
First released in the US last year, the Ditch Witch SK900 packs a punch – despite its size – making it ideal for landscapers and contractors.
The machine is just 1.06m wide, with a hinge pin height of 2.19m, making it easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces as well as easily transported.
A rated loading capacity of 422kg at 35 per cent tipping load means the SK900 can carry heavy loads and, with a turbocharged Yanmar engine, it has plenty of torque to tackle tough terrain.
Ditch Witch says the SK900 is an all-on-one solution due to its versatility, with the skid steer available with a range of interchangeable attachments.
A state-of-the-art joystick control system is among the key features of the SK900, providing a high level of control and accuracy whilst also reducing the risk of errors. Ditch Witch says the control system is user-friendly and even skid steer novices will be able to operate the machine.
The skid steer is constructed with heavy-duty components and is built to last. A comprehensive warranty is also offered.
EXCAVATOR
Straight boom
Volvo CE has released the EC300E straight boom demolition excavator
Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) recently announced the US launch of its new 30-ton (27.2-tonne) EC300E straight boom demolition excavator. The company also announced an industry-first feature called Lifting Mode for Multi Demolition Boom that allows a high-reach demolition excavator to serve as a safe carrier for the lifting of machine components from a trailer to the ground.
The extra-long straight boom on the EC300E can reach a maximum length of 33 feet (10m). The cab is protected against falling debris with a frame-mounted falling objects guard and the roof window and front onepiece glass are made from P5A, which is resistant to high impact.
The EC300E comes with several standard features that are valuable in demolition applications. These include X1 and X3 auxiliary piping, a quick fit and oil drain line and water lines that are connected to a dust suppression system that can work in either auto or manual mode. A heavy counterweight provides balance and is removable for transportation.
The new Lifting Mode for Multi Demolition Boom — specifically designed for Volvo high-reach excavators — offers improved flexibility, reduced emissions and lower total cost of ownership. It can be
factory-fitted to any of the company’s three high-reach excavators: the EC380E HR, the EC480E HR and the EC750E HR.
This mode can simplify transporting equipment to jobsites because it allows the excavator to safely lift components such as cradles and digging or high reach booms from the trailer to the ground, at which point they can be installed on the machine.
“Total cost of ownership is reduced by eliminating the need for a mobile crane or second excavator, and flexibility is increased thanks to the time savings,” Volvo CE key account director, demolition equipment Tony den Hoed says.
“Emissions are also reduced due to fewer vehicles being on site.”
The solution consists of machine software specifically designed for the controlled lifting of equipment, as well as visual warnings outside the cab to warn bystanders that a lifting process is underway. The software also controls hydraulic pressure and engine speed.
This lifting mode includes a certified lifting accessory, designed to fit the patented modular joint design from the multi demolition boom and can easily be connected to the lower pin of the boom. When all components are safely unloaded, switching to the high reach or digging boom is easy, thanks to that modular hydraulic joint.
Apprentices inducted
From 2,000 applications to join Hastings Deering’s apprenticeship program, the final 50 successful applicants were welcomed to the company recently.
Hastings Deering’s chief executive officer Mark Scott says the company continued to target a diverse range of apprentices, with this cohort a mix of school leavers, mature age workers, women and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged between 17 and 38.
“It’s a diverse group – 50 of the best and a larger intake than in previous years as we continue to build the skills pipeline,” Scott says.
“Our training is world’s best practice as we train and work to a global standard.”
Koby Townsend, from Walkerston, Mackay is the youngest of five boys. While two of his older brothers have finished university degrees, the 18-year-old school leaver has followed one of his other brothers into an apprenticeship, starting with Hastings Deering as an auto electrician.
“I think my family expected me to go to university,” he says.
“I got high marks in all my subjects like physics and chemistry and all through school I thought I would go to university.
“Being exposed to both career pathways, it was only until my last year at high school that I thought the apprenticeship lifestyle would suit me better.”
Dahna King, from Plainlands near
Toowoomba, is one of four women, seven Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and 17 other mature-age apprentices. The fully qualified hairdresser is trading in her scissors for spanners and sockets.
She says that she has long been attracted to the resources sector, having moved away from hairdressing into mine work in Moranbah and Dysart.
“My becoming a single mum 10 months ago was my catalyst for looking for employment that was not fly-in-fly-out, or living at mine camps,” she says.
“I have met so many people from Hastings Deering during my time at the mines and have heard such great stories about the company, I just had to apply.
“I admit I was a bit worried, at 28, if I had left it too late, especially with the competition of school leavers, but I just knew I had to follow my
dream to show a good example to my daughter.”
Hastings Deering’s executive general manager – Australian operations Daniel Viero says this year’s higher apprentice intake reflects anticipated future demand.
“We try to envisage what the market will look like in four years’ time,” Viero says.
“We take a long-term view about the continued investment in skills for the future. That means we are always looking forward to anticipating future skills needs and ensuring we have qualified tradespeople meet the market.”
He says that, while there continued to be fierce competition for skilled workers across all industries, the high application numbers showed apprenticeships were highly sought after, with trades offering a successful career path.
“Figures from to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research [NCVER] show, as of June 2022, there were over 415,000 apprentices and trainees in training with 58.2 per cent training in the trades,” Viero says.
“NCVER figures also show 91.8 per cent of apprentices who completed their training were employed afterwards, which is consistent with our figures of offers of fulltime employment after training. Almost every one of our apprentices is offered fulltime work at the end of their apprenticeship.”

CONSTRUCTION Funding boost
Councils will receive funding for the improvement of local roads and infrastructure
In good news for contractors involved in local council road and infrastructure projects, the federal government has allocated $500 million to councils across Australia, which will be able to spend this funding on priority local road and community infrastructure projects.
An additional $250 million funded in the October budget will be targeted to supporting road projects in rural, regional and outer urban areas.
Councils will be able to access their Phase 4 funding allocations from July, with projects to be delivered by June 2025. The LRCI program supports all Australian councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects in their region, creating jobs and long-lasting benefits for communities.
Guidelines and grant agreements will be finalised by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts over the coming months. Individual council allocations under the first $500 million are available on the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program website.
“The LRCI program delivers projects such as upgrades to roads, community halls, parks and sports facilities, bike paths and playgrounds,” Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Minister Kristy McBain says.
“We know what a difference good local roads and community facilities can make, particularly in regional and rural communities, which is why we’ve increased both the funding amount and the delivery window for Phase 4.
“This will give councils the time they need to plan for larger or more complex projects that may be a higher priority and have a bigger impact in their community.”
GRANTS
Grants available for tradies rebuilding Kimberley
Additional support has been provided by the WA government to attract more tradies to the area and support employers and apprentices during rebuild efforts
The WA government has extended a $3.5 million program designed to attract skilled workers to disaster-affected communities, with the aim of attracting people to – and supporting current employers and their staff in – the flood-affected Kimberley region, to help assist in rebuild efforts.
Employers, apprentices and trainees in the Kimberley can now apply for the Construction Training Fund (CTF) Disaster Recovery Grant.
The initiative was launched in late 2021 to help to rebuild communities affected by the Wooroloo bushfire and Cyclone Seroja. It was originally due to end in 2023, but has been extended for another two years, and broadened out to areas impacted by Cyclone Ellie.
Under the scheme, employers of apprentices and trainees working in the affected regions can claim an additional grant of up to $3,000 annually until June 2025.
Apprentices or trainees can claim up to $1,000 annually over the same period to cover costs such as travel and accommodation.
Currently, eligible businesses that have an apprentice or trainee can
receive CTF grants of up to $21,000 to help with the costs of training. Subsidies are also available to eligible applicants for recognised short courses to anyone working in construction in the affected areas.
“Attracting construction workers right now can be a challenge,” WA Training Minister Simone McGurk says.
“That’s why it’s so important that tradies working in those areas of the Kimberley affected by flooding can now access financial support.
“This scheme recognises the cost of doing business in the regions while also attracting a skilled local workforce. I’m pleased we’re able to extend it for another two years.
“The recovery will take time, but first and foremost we need boots on the ground. I would encourage employers, trainees and apprentices to apply – and help make a real difference.”

MENTORING
Practical support
Charles Darwin University chose International Women’s Day to announce the launch of a new Women in Trades mentoring program
The new program connects young women commencing their apprenticeships with women working in the NT trades sector.
CDU Careers Centre has partnered with the NT chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction to facilitate the new initiative this year and support female apprentices in nontraditional TAFE disciplines such as construction and transport.
CDU employability programs officer Caroline Thompson says the new mentoring program offers an opportunity for female apprentices from various construction and transport disciplines to meet each other and to hear from experienced female tradespeople who have already walked the path of the apprentices.
“For some women, it can feel a little overwhelming to walk into a predominately male classroom and workplace in industries such as construction, transport, electrotechnology and plumbing,” Thompson says.
“The goal of the Women in Trades Mentoring Program is to help female students feel confident to engage with their TAFE studies at CDU and also in their workplaces, knowing that they are supported along their journey towards their chosen trade career.
CONSTRUCTION Under ground
The excavation on the first of two tunnels in Melbourne’s West Gate Tunnel Project has been completed after Vida the tunnel boring machine broke through
“Their confidence and commitment to the program will ultimately help to increase gender diversity within the future NT trades sector.”
The mentoring sessions will also assist apprentices to interact and collaborate with their peers, building a network to support them throughout their early careers.
Pro vice-chancellor and chief executive of CDU TAFE Mike Hamilton says CDU’s support of an inclusive training environment and gender equity has provided strong career pathways for women to take on a trade.
“This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the achievements of women who have showed confidence and capability in their trade apprenticeships,” Hamilton says.
“We strive towards gender equity to ensure training at CDU is welcoming of everyone, and that women feel supported in their early careers.
“Our practical courses have helped them to boost their incomes, gain career opportunities and secure ongoing employment in trades that are in-demand.”
Vida completed the 2.8-kilometre journey in late February after close to 7,000 hours of combined tunnelling.
The tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through in Yarraville having made its way from the westside of the Maribyrnong River under Yarraville, to Williamstown Road near the West Gate Freeway.
The West Gate Tunnel is being built to ease congestion on the West Gate Bridge, which sees 200,000 vehicles a day cross over it.
Breaking through is a significant milestone for the project, according to Victorian Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan.
“This is a huge achievement for the West Gate Tunnel – these giant TBMs have been operating day and night to reach this point, and I want to thank all the crew’s working 24/7 to help deliver this important project,” she says.
Throughout the project, TBM Vida has been operated continuously by a crew of up to 20 people, excavating over one million tonnes of rock and soil to allow for the installation of more than 10,000 individual concrete segments that will form the base of the West Gate tunnel.
TBM Bella is also scheduled to complete its four-kilometre expedition in the coming months, digging from just west of the Maribyrnong River to just east of Millers Road.
Bella and Vida are the two biggest TBMs operating in Australia at present.

Work Safe Australia has released ambitious targets to significantly reduce workplace injuries and fatalities over the next 10 years
STRATEGY
Safe work
A new 10-year strategy has been released by Safe Work Australia that aims at reducing the number of injuries, illnesses and fatalities in workplaces
Designed to provide a safe and healthy workplace for all, the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2023–2033 has been agreed upon by all Australian governments.
The strategy outlines five specific targets to measure progress over the next decade, with a key focus on reducing the number of worker fatalities caused by traumatic injuries by 30 per cent.
“Everyone who goes to work has the right to return home safely,” Safe Work Australia chief executive Michelle Baxter says.
“While data shows that fatal and serious injuries at work have declined over the last decade, Australian workers are still getting sick and injured, sometimes fatally, from work.
“The Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2023–2033 addresses ongoing and emerging challenges in work health and safety over the next decade, including managing psychosocial risks, the rise of artificial intelligence, automation and related technologies and new types of work including gig work.”
Other measurable targets of the strategy include reductions in the frequency rate of serious claims that result in more than one week off work by 20 per cent, lowering of the frequency rate of claims that result in permanent impairment by 15 per cent and the overall incidence of work-related injury or illness to below 3.5 per cent.
The strategy also has the target of no new cases of accelerated silicosis by 2033.
The strategy can be downloaded from: www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/ awhs-strategy_23-33
TRAINING
New micro-credentials
In an effort to address skills shortages, micro-credentials will target the sector’s most critical skills shortages
Engineers Australia has launched an industry-first suite of microcredentials on construction engineering skills.
Engineers Australia chief engineer Jane MacMaster says the new offering is part of Engineers Australia’s strategy to address the acute skills shortage in Australia.
“Engineering is critical to the health of our nation’s construction industry and addressing the skills shortage through targeted action is one of Engineers Australia’s highest priorities,” she says.
“Micro-credentials aren’t just a training course – they are highlytargeted tools that develop and certify new skills or certify existing skills, to industry standards of practice.”
The suite of micro-credentials follow-on from the benchmarking of skills and competency by Engineers Australia and the Australian Constructors Association – the Construction Engineering Learning & Development Guide (CELDG) –and target the highest priority skill demands in the sector.
The suite focuses on skills outlined in the CELDG for project engineers:
• Construction Contract Management: Develops and assesses capability to
understand construction contracts including commercial principles, rights, obligations and appropriate use of clauses, and the ability to scope subcontractor procurement
• Managing Project Costs: Develops and assesses capability to manage and track project budgets and costs as well as communicate budgets and work packages to construction crews
• Managing Project Schedule: Develops and assesses capability to develop and oversee construction project schedules including determining the critical path and understanding the commercial impact of change
• Managing Tenders and Bids: Develops and assesses capability to prepare, evaluate and coordinate construction project tenders, and contribute to tender or bidding processes. They are also relevant for construction professionals, providing recognition for their on-the-job skills development, and site engineers looking to progress to the next stage of their career.
EXCAVATORS
Small and mighty
Takeuchi has expanded its TB3000 excavator series, adding its first short tail swing excavator in the 5-tonne class
The TB350R boasts a rear swing overhang of just 7.5cm, meaning operators can focus on the job at hand and not worry about rear-swing impacts.
The new machine weighs in at just 4,970kg (canopy) and 5,085 (cab) and is fitted with a 32.4kW (43.4hp) diesel engine that also produces 180.1Nm of torque.
“Takeuchi continues to design and build excavators that are feature rich, delivering a unique combination of performance, durability, operator comfort and serviceability,” Takeuchi director of global sales Clay Eubanks says.
“The new TB350R offers many improvements that demonstrate our commitment to providing customers with advanced technology that helps them be more comfortable and productive.”
A four-pump hydraulic system is another feature of the excavator, delivering smooth control of the boom. Despite its small size, the TB350R is well versed on the jobsite with a bucket breakout force of 37.3kN as well as 54.8kN of traction force and a maximum digging depth of 3.57m.
Takeuchi has redesigned the interior to improve the operator experience with a high-definition, multifunction colour display monitor that is 4.3-inches (10.9cm) for the canopy configuration and a 7-inch (17.8cm) touchscreen in the cab configuration.
A high-back suspension seat with
adjustable arm rests makes for a comfortable ride while large foot areas, low-effort pilot controls and radio functions all improve the operator experience. On the cab model, intuitive jog dial means operators can navigate the monitor with ease while integrated airconditioning is also included.
“When maintenance and service work are fast and easy to perform on a machine, it’s more likely that they’ll be done correctly and at the right intervals,” Eubanks says.
“That’s why we designed the TB350R with a wide-opening rear engine service door and a rightside cover that opens overhead for quick access to key daily inspection points.”
For the European and North American markets, Takeuchi’s Fleet Management (TFM) telematics system comes standard on the TB350R. TFM reduces downtime and controls costs by providing operators with machine data including condition, run time, location and remote diagnostics.
“Since Takeuchi developed the first compact excavator in 1971, we’ve focused on providing products that meet and even exceed the needs of today’s contractors,” Eubanks says.
“We believe the TB350R continues that tradition by delivering serviceability and operator comfort without sacrificing efficiency, value or performance.”
DRILL
Smart rig
Epiroc’s new
includes several new features and options and will be available to order from May
Epiroc’s SmartROC T45 tophammer drill rig has been upgraded with a larger capacity and higher performance, with smart technology providing data to improve workflow.
Epiroc says its SmartROC rigs offer the lowest fuel consumption in the market, with the smart Rig Control System (RCS) constantly monitoring compressor load and engine RPM to optimise fuel consumption.
Accessed via a touchscreen interface, enhanced automation reduces the demands placed on the operator.
“The intuitive SmartROC T45 is designed to dramatically reduce the risk of manual errors and human mistakes,” Epiroc global product manager Ulf Gyllander says.
“The operator enjoys assisted troubleshooting from the large touchscreen display, with monitored cables, sensors and modules. The FOPS and ROPS-approved cabin offers excellent visibility. It is fitted with reliable LED lights. An expanded lighting kit option is available along with support for two cameras. As a result, not only is the risk of manual errors reduced, but downtime is kept to a minimum.”
The productivity is further enhanced with the intelligent drill rig architecture on Epiroc’s standardised platform and smart options and features such as Hole Navigation System (HNS), Measure While Drilling (MWD) and ROC Manager.
The SmartROC T45 will be available to order for all markets from May 2023.
AUTONOMOUS CONTROL
Path planner
Trimble has announced the release of its advanced path planning technology for the automation of industrial equipment
Trimble’s new advanced path planning technology gives Trimble end users and equipment manufacturers the ability to optimise and automate the trajectory, speed and overall path design of industrial equipment to increase efficiency of work.
Manufacturers can supply the technology to their customers themselves as well as it being available within Trimble Construction Cloud.
Trimble’s advanced path planning technology offers automated, full path, complete project trajectory from entry to exit, including logistics points. The technology allows plans to be created in the office and adjustments made in the field or worksite. In addition, it is optimised for complex fields, unique site shapes, obstacles and avoidance zones.
“Our new path planning technology is the next step in Trimble’s vision of making fully autonomous solutions available across industries, regardless of brand, type of equipment or use case,” Trimble general manager off-road autonomy Finlay Wood says.
“With this easy-to-integrate solution, we’ve taken another significant step towards full autonomy. It enables our customers to reduce waste and simplify complex tasks, whether they are in the cab or not – part of our vision to meet operators where they are on their path toward fully autonomous solutions.”
Trimble is currently field testing this technology with Dynapac, a supplier of soil and asphalt rollers, light equipment and pavers, as part of its autonomous compactor.
DUMP TRUCKS
Beefed up
John Deere has expanded its Performance Tiering Strategy (P-Tier) to include an articulated dump truck model
The new P-Tier 410 and 460 articulated dump trucks (ADTs) feature an updated cab layout for increased operator comfort while retaining the same fuel efficiency, dump body and drive models as the previous E-II models, John Deere says.
Other aesthetic improvements have also been made, including to the trucks’ external styling. A range of onboard settings is included as standard to boost efficiency whilst in operation.
John Deere construction and forestry solutions marketing manager Justin Steger says the models were designed to benefit the operator.
“The P-Tier models were built with the operator in mind to support ease of use and operator comfort,” Steger says.
“Redesigning the layout of the components in the cab and grouping features together and packaging them in a meaningful way based on the application are a couple of examples of how we’re incorporating
customer feedback and delivering further improvements.”
Customers have the choice of two different trim levels on the ADTs as well as additional optional packages to further improve comfort, manage debris and increase maintenance and service capabilities.
The first trim package includes familiar John Deere features such as a black exhaust stack, manually adjusted rear view mirrors and temperature controls, standard seat and radio and 15-amp converter, among other things.
The second trim packages – for what Deere calls ‘elevated creature comforts’ – includes a chrome exhaust stack, power adjusted rear view mirrors, premium seat and radio, 25-amp converter, automatic temperature control and LED vehicle lights.
The P-Tier 410 and 460 articulated dump trucks are for release in North America with no timeline set for their arrival in Australia.
Augmented reality app developed for site safety
The app has been developed to support safety training for construction projects in remote Northern Territory and First Nations communities
A former Charles Darwin University (CDU) student has developed an augmented reality app to aid construction safety training in remote areas.
Issues such as overcrowding, poor housing conditions and a severe housing shortage impact remote communities and there is a need to train local tradesmen to support community construction and maintenance projects.
Anand Kujur created a gamebased learning application that allows users to refresh their knowledge of safety risks and measures on the construction site.
“The application, called Safety First NT, really focuses on providing an interactive aid to help more effective and efficient learning at the work site,” Kujur says.
“When local First Nations tradesmen aren’t involved in construction projects or are away from their community, their prior training may not be so easily recalled when they come back.
“We’re addressing this issue with a visual communication tool on a convenient, hand-held device that can be passed around the workers to help refresh their training.”
Local community members also provide additional work on construction sites, and perform general upkeep and maintenance of housing, when tradesmen from urban areas return to base.
“The app currently provides a visual display of how to wear personal protective equipment [PPE] on a construction site, complete with danger signage and the risk of falling debris. The mode of teaching can be adopted easily to other material,” Kujur says.
“Future versions can also include simulated guides of everyday home maintenance tasks, such as how to change a tap or tighten hinges on a door frame, to help community members repair their homes while tradesmen aren’t there.”
Project supervisor and CDU Information Technology lecturer Dr Cat Kutay says the application can also have an audio guide in different First Nations languages.
“The oral sharing of knowledge is such a strong and integral part of First Nations culture, so applying this familiar way of communication to our safety training app will allow construction workers to familiarise themselves quickly,” Kutay says.
“Refreshing safety training regularly means skilled workers can learn remotely on country without having to leave and attend training hundreds of kilometres from home. It creates a stabilised workforce and brings in income to be shared with family and the community.”
SAFETY TECH
Ferrovial introduces wearable sensors
Ferrovial has developed a range of wearable devices to improve the safety of
workers
Ferrovial’s new wearables system uses proximity sensors in vests, helmets and other devices that are linked to the machinery operating on a site. When a hazardous situation is detected, the system triggers a triple alert — physical, visual and acoustic — to avoid an accident. The goal is to eliminate accidental interactions between personnel and heavy machinery, it says.
The project is part of the Safety, Health, Wellbeing Innovation Lab, an innovation program focused on improving the safety of employees and infrastructure users with new technologies. It was first tested in the United States by construction subsidiary Webber. Following the successful first trial, pilot projects were rolled out on the Club del Mar expansion project in Palma de Mallorca in Spain and on the Oporto Metro extension in Portugal. The devices were supplied by GKD.
Ferrovial also provides training courses on how to operate in risk situations using virtual reality goggles and the Infraverse (Ferrovial’s metaverse) environment. This makes it possible to replicate actual danger situations and give trainees the necessary safety knowledge, significantly reducing the risks associated with certain situations.

Haulotte is beefing up its apprenticeships program as its Compact scissor lift range rolls out across Australia
Haulotte is looking for additional apprentices to join its teams in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane this year, having recently implemented a formal training program across its bases nationwide.
The elevated work platform (EWP) and telehandler manufacturer now has one apprentice in each of its locations across Australia, each taking part in a structured training program.
The program starts with tasks like painting and applying decals, before moving onto predelivery inspections.
After a year, apprentices rotate to service where they learn the diagnostics and maintenance of the machines before, finally, working with experts to complete the 10-year refurbishments that completely refresh a machine.
The program is led by Brad Kennaugh, who says each apprentice is assigned a mentor to guide them through their rotations, in a bid to help them develop skills across all the company’s departments.
“It is a unique set of skills that go into servicing an EWP, and we face tough competition from other industries,” he says.
“The hire industry is a great place to work and provides great opportunities. That is why we want to get the message out there and help get as many apprentices trained up as possible.”
The program also features incentives as the apprentices move from first, to second and third year, including access to the Haulotte Academy – a globally awarded training platform full of intuitive programs designed to provide detailed expertise on EWP equipment, safety and operations.
Haulotte’s added investment in apprentices comes as the company’s Compact scissor lifts start arriving in Australia.
Company national sales manager Paul Sultana says Australian hire companies were impressed with the unit’s design and technology updates – including its battery management system – when they were first displayed at the Hire22 event last year.
“Customers… are loving the smooth AC drive, ease of maintenance and overall strength and robustness of the machine,” he says.
“Along with the Activ’Screen on board diagnostics, the ease of maintenance and accessibility to componentry has been well received by the customers, helping them with reducing their maintenance costs.”
Featuring five working heights, from 8 to 14 metres, and with load capacities from 250 to 450kg, Haulotte says the new machines add flexibility to hire fleets.
Australian Pump Industries, also known as Aussie Pumps, is offering more water and less pressure in its newest water blaster.
An extension of its Scud range, the new ‘Truck Wash Special’ has a ‘Big Berty’ Bertolini slow speed heavy duty triplex pump that delivers a flow speed of 21 litres of water per minute at 2,600 psi pressure.
The Truck Wash models use higher flow and less pressure to get muddy jobs done faster, making service work easier.
Aussie Pumps chief engineer John Hales says the company’s 4,000psi, 15 litre per minute pump gearbox drive Scuds are at “every major rental company in the country”.
“The machines, either Honda petrol engine drive or Yanmar diesel, are widely used in earthmoving, transport, professional cleaning and similar applications” he says.
The Honda 13 horsepower (9.7kW) GX390 industrial petrol engine is the standard drive system, available in either recoil or electric start configuration, while the 10hp (7.5kW) electric start Yanmar diesel engine is popular in construction and mining.
The finned crankcase on the Big Berty pump helps provide cool running, while its solid ceramic pistons and 316 stainless steel valves prevent corrosion and enhance high fluid dynamic efficiency.
“The pumps are made to last and come with a four-year warranty”, Hales says.
The Truck Wash Special model comes with up to 30 metres of high pressure hose and an optional stainless steel high pressure hose reel, rated to 5,000 psi.
Also available are long wands for under carriage cleaning, turbo lances for enhanced effective working pressure and even a telescopic wand that gives the operator the ability to clean up to 5 metres in height without the use of ladders.
For more information contact Aussie Pumps (02) 8865 3500.
