DEWATERING SCREEN
CDE showed off a new Infinity high tonnage screen at ConExpo and recently supplied equipment for a new NSW sand and aggregates business
To infinity
CDE, a supplier of sand and aggregate washing solutions for the waste recycling and natural processing sectors, launched the latest addition to its range of Infinity high-frequency dewatering screens at ConExpo recently.
The new P2-168 Infinity screen, the largest in the Infinity range, has a processing capacity of up to 700 tons (635 tonnes) per hour.
CDE says the unique construction of

its Infinity range makes it fundamentally different from other screens available on the market. With no welds in the sidewalls, a galvanised structure and a VibroSync drive mechanism providing control and even distribution of power, the screens offer increased durability and prolonged operational life for advanced screening and dewatering performance. With almost 17 square metres of surface area, the screen decks are reinforced at the centre point, which serves to strengthen the screen and provide the operator with the flexibility to produce up to six in-spec products simultaneously.
Prized purchase
Terex Material Processing (MP) acquires bulk material handling and conveyor manufacture Marco
The Marco brand – which has been around since 1936 – has joined Terex MP’s crushing, screening and conveying division, with Marco benefit from the latter’s global distribution network.
As part of the acquisition, Terex MP will purchase the 9,290 square metre manufacturing factory and office site on a six-hectare site in Mt Vernon, Missouri. Terex has announced plans to expand the site’s manufacturing capacity to
support the growing demand for mobile conveying equipment.
Terex MP vice president and managing director Pat Brian says the purchase is a strategic business move by the brand.
“This acquisition supports Terex MP’s growth strategy to expand our offering in the bulk material handling industries with products that complement the existing portfolio,” Brian says.

Bookings are open now for the new Dig It experience at Thunderbird Park
Kids rule
Kids will now have the chance to operate their own mini excavator at a custom-designed outdoor construction zone
Due to open on Mother’s Day weekend, May 13–14, Dig It is a new family-focused construction machinery experience.
Based at Thunderbird Park in Mount Tambourine – approximately one hour’s drive south of Brisbane – Dig It will feature nine Caterpillar mini excavators designed for kids to operate.
The site features a range of fun and educational activities where children can learn and experience the construction industry, earthworks, engineering and building, as well as the importance of safety and teamwork.
“Dig It is the place for kids to gather and work – they will be the operators of these amazing machines,” Dig It spokesperson Kat Keegan says.
The two-hour experience includes a hands-on session where kids are able to operate a 1.7-tonne Cat excavator, digging and moving dirt and rocks. Experienced instructors teach the basics of excavation and safety.
Likely to be popular among kids and parents alike, the Demolition Zone will entail using a wrecking ball to knock over towers, while the Croc Zone channels precision – with excavators used to hook a ‘croc’. The RC zone meanwhile makes use of a host stateof-the-art remote control machinery including dozers, wheel loaders and dump trucks.
At the end of the session, kids will
receive an induction card for their work during the day. All operators are trained and experienced, all safety equipment is provided and all activities are ageappropriate.
Dig It operators are calling on kids to name the nine excavators at the Dig It site. You can vote at www. thunderbirdpark.com/dig-it.html, with the competition closing May 26.
The Cat Compact ESS is useful as an energy storage system and energy source on worksites
BATTERY STORAGE
Caterpillar has developed the Compact ESS mobile battery energy storage system that can store surplus energy and act as a generator or machinery charger
Compact charging
Caterpillar Inc. has released its Compact ESS mobile battery energy storage system that supplements traditional mobile power solutions.
Designed for rapid plug-and-play installation and integration, the Cat Compact ESS module can be used with any combination of diesel, natural gas or renewable energy sources such as solar or wind. It stores surplus power from these energy sources and then discharges from its reserve as needed. It is equipped with an energy control module (ECM), an onboard management system that continuously monitors load levels and automatically switches between generator set power and stored energy as necessary, only using the generator set for recharging or accommodating higher loads.
Cat Compact ESS modules are designed for applications requiring long periods of low loads, such as night-time loads, aroundthe-clock low loads and time periods when a silent supply of energy is required. When used in these applications, the Cat Compact ESS modules can increase power efficiency, resulting in decreased fuel usage, associated greenhouse gas emissions and maintenance costs over time.
The Cat Compact ESS also enables remote monitoring and control of all connected systems, including generator sets, solar PV, inverters, grid, batteries, meters and sensors.
Caterpillar offers two models of the Cat Compact ESS module, with configurations available for 50 Hz or 60 Hz applications. The Cat XES60 provides up to 56.8kWh of capacity, while the Cat XES120 delivers up to 127.9kWh of capacity.
Enabling full recharging in as little as four hours, the Cat Compact ESS is available in Australia from Caterpillar’s power systems dealer Energy Power Systems Australia Pty Ltd.

Going underground
Volvo Trucks is working with Swedish mining company Boliden to operate electric trucks in underground mines
Boliden has announced that it will be the first company worldwide to start using battery-electric trucks for heavy underground transport, with the benefits of no exhaust emissions, a safer workplace and quieter working conditions.
With exhaust gases from diesel vehicles responsible for a majority of carbon dioxide emissions from mines, Boliden says this move will help it achieve a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 40 per cent by 2030.
Two heavy-duty electric Volvo trucks will be used in the Boliden Kankberg mine, located near Skellefteå in northern Sweden. If all trucks in the mine were to be electrified, the CO2 emissions from the mine could be reduced by more than 25 per cent.
“This is an exciting collaboration in an environment with very tough demands – steep slopes, heavy loads and humid air that wears on the vehicles,” Volvo Trucks project manager Jessica Lindholm says.
“The collaboration with Boliden will give us valuable knowledge about the performance of electric trucks when driven underground and provide answers to questions about how the driveline and batteries are affected.
Reduced carbon dioxide emissions for mining transport also means that we, indirectly, will reduce our own CO2 emissions, because the mining industry’s raw materials are used in our trucks.”
The first truck to serve the Kankberg mine, a Volvo FH Electric, will be used to transport rock bolts and other equipment down into the mine and will be put into service this year. Based on the experience with the first truck, another Volvo FH Electric will later be put into operation and used for underground transport of rock and ore.
“We see the collaboration with Volvo as a fantastic opportunity to push the electric technology forward and at the same time learn how to adapt our operations for a transition to fossilfree underground transport,” Boliden project manager Dennis Forslund says.
“A major benefit of the trucks is that they will contribute to a more sustainable mine, both in terms of emissions and also the working environment for our employees.
“In addition, the total amount of energy consumed in the mine will be lower as electric drive is more energy efficient than a diesel engine, and it is possible to capture the electricity regenerated during engine braking on downhill slopes,” he says.
Hybrid approach
For 15 years, Komatsu has been the market leader in hybrid machinery, after launching the world’s first hybrid hydraulic excavator, the HB205-1, in 2008 in response to climbing fuel prices.
The manufacturer says hybrid equipment holds an important position in the equipment line-up of Australian companies, alongside other emerging technologies.
Komatsu Australia’s general manager for construction Dean Gaedtke says there is a strong appetite for hybrid machines on worksites, with 190 now operating in our region and over 5,000 units globally.
“The Komatsu hybrid machine performs just as well as our conventional excavator,” he says.
“It has similar high production outputs and power, while saving anywhere from 20 to 40 per cent on fuel consumption, depending on the application.
“That’s why we’re seeing a lot of interest from our construction customers, especially those working on Tier 1 projects, looking to invest in hybrids for their fleets. The Komatsu
hybrids are highly productive and reliable while helping our customers with ESG [environmental, social and governance] alignment to the construction sites or contract sustainability requirements.
“Plus, the value recovery on the Komatsu hybrid compared to conventional excavators is greatly improved. The hybrid system is designed to give you more fuel savings the harder it works. For example, the more you dig and slew, the more fuel can be saved per tonne.
“Hybrid technology significantly reduces the impact of equipment on the environment, without adversely impacting the economic feasibility of a project. It’s a simple equation: less fuel, less emissions, less carbon.
”Hybrids have been strongly established in the automotive market now for many years and now it’s the construction industry’s turn to realise their full potential as a strong addition to any fleet.”
Komatsu’s hybrid range
The two hybrids available in Australia are the HB215LC-1M0 and HB335LC-1 excavators. The 24-tonne
HB215LC-1M0 comes with a 139 horsepower (104kW) engine and nearly a cubic metre of bucket capacity, while the larger 36-tonne HB335LC-1 operates with a 253hp (189kW) engine and 1.8 cubic metre bucket capacity.
Both deliver the same performance as a conventional excavator, but with fuel savings of up to 40 per cent through the innovative Ultra-Capacitor system. They come standard with the Komtrax remote monitoring and location system, backed by Komatsu’s Australia-wide service and support network.
Gaedtke says there is peace of mind in knowing that Komatsu is the one distributor for the entire country.
“No matter which state or territory you are in, you are dealing with Komatsu Australia. We have around 3,000 employees across 55 locations in our region to support our customers,” he says.
He adds that while hybrids and electrification are a strong focus, Komatsu’s R&D team is continuously looking at what’s next
The two hybrids available in Australia are the HB215LC-1M0 and HB335LC-1 excavators
for the brand and the industry as it works towards a net-zero future.
“Komatsu invests close to $1 billion annually in R&D and we’re constantly looking at ways to innovate our machinery and services,” Gaedtke says.
“As we look past hybrids and electrification, hydrogen fuel and hydrogen fuel cells are on our radar as possible solutions where high demand power is required over long working days. Artificial intelligence, integrated machinery digitally connected into site designs and site management tools, are also no longer a vision of the future. We are working in this realm today.
“Of course, all the great technology and development means nothing if it doesn’t improve safety, productivity, and profitability for our
customers. These are some of the core outcomes we strive for in our products and services.”
Experience in electrification
Gaedtke says Komatsu’s strong focus and long experience in electrification is what sets it apart from competitors when customers are looking to invest in hybrid machinery.
“Komatsu, locally and globally, has been leading the electrification journey for over 30 years,” he says.
“Our experience in Smart Construction, digitisation and electrification spans across many years, with reliable and innovative machinery.
“Our ESG strategy has us aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 and be completely net-zero by 2050. It’s a big feat, but with the introduction of flagship machines like the PC210E all-electric hydraulic excavator, which we
previewed at bauma last year, we’re on a good path to meet those targets.
“And it’s not just our machinery, it’s the technology that is applied with it. Komatsu’s technology offerings like iSite for productivity and fleet management, Smart Construction and iMC [Intelligent Machine Control] are making it easier to reduce your carbon footprint onsite, through capturing accurate machine productivity data.
“This helps our customers manage their machines and the efficiency of their operation and minimise their fuel wastage.”

Making an impact
Screenmasters Australia is finding it easier than most to cultivate and maintain brand loyalty, with a product so strong customers keep coming back.
The company’s key to consistency in an ever-changing market is being backed and partnered for almost 20 years by world-renowned mobile crushing and screening manufacturer Keestrack.
Feedback from Screenmasters’ customers is they can’t get enough of the quality build, performance and longevity that the Keestrack brand offers them, with many purchasing their third and fourth units as their businesses continue to grow and evolve.
A small NSW contractor recently took delivery of its second Keestrack unit, a K4 scalper, to join a Keestrack R3h impactor already on site, with the possibility of extending the fleet to include more Keestrack units in the coming months.
Working in quarrying and recycling, the contractor says the small footprint and flexibility of the Keestrack equipment means it can be moved from site to site quickly and at low cost.
While the units are compact in size (both under 30 tonnes) they are big on capability and outperform much larger competitors, achieving high productivity and throughput, at a low cost per tonne. The contractor can produce a high-quality end product
and move onto the next job, keeping profits high.
Hydraulic steel pipes, sealed bearings, large access doors and ports to key components allow for easy and safe servicing, reducing downtime and costs for maintenance and replacement. Keestrack only uses the best quality components within its machines to provide end users with the most reliable and productive units possible.
The Keestrack R3h is the best mid-size impactor in its class, says Screenmasters. Boasting a groundbreaking design, it has won a host of awards including the Prestigious Red Dot Design Award, German Design Prize and the Big See Award.
Features include an aggressive screen box, Volvo engine, a crusher driven directly off the engine for more torque, load sensing hydraulics
for low fuel burn and a drop-off screen box.
The Keestrack K4 heavy-duty scalper features a large hydraulically adjustable double deck 14 x 5 screen box, Cat 4.4 engine, extra-large steel apron feeder, extended main conveyor, high stockpile capacity and load sensing hydraulics – and all Keestrack machines are fully powder coated for longevity of the paint.
What makes the Keestrack scalping screen range different to its competitors is its versatility in a wide range of applications, including screening oversize material, aggregates, construction and demolition waste, green waste and mulch. What is key to this is the vibration and G-force of the screen box, which allows it to be effective in a variety of applications, including fine screening (<10mm). This flexibility is key for contractors when moving from job to job as it allows them to use the one screen for a multitude of applications.
Alongside these smaller units, Keestrack also offers the larger R6 impactor and K6 scalping screens for larger contractors.
Screenmasters says that it has seen a lot of success with both models in the Australian market, with a large volume of units available and more scheduled to arrive this year.
With new and used stock available, find out more about Keestrack by calling Screenmasters on 1800 571 464 or visit www.screenmasters.com.au

A new heavy-duty trommel from MDS has arrived Down
Under thanks to distributor Tricon Equipment, fresh from its unveiling at ConExpo
Tricon Equipment has added a revamped trommel to its extensive product line-up following its launch at the ConExpo exhibition held in Las Vegas in early March.
The team from Tricon Equipment was on deck in Las Vegas where they joined US material processing specialist MDS to launch the revamped M515 heavy duty trommel. As Tricon Equipment is the nationwide distributor for MDS equipment, it has already brought the new trommel to Australia and is ready deliver them to customers.
It was the first time MDS – a Terex-owned manufacturer of heavy duty and recycling trommels and conveyor systems – had exhibited at ConExpo.
MDS says the M515 heavy duty trommel is the flagship model of its range and is ideal for creating riprap – loose rock used to prevent erosion – and recovering rocks that
are mixed with clay, mud and other sticky materials.
MDS general manager and business line director Conor Hegarty says exhibiting at ConExpo and showcasing the new M515 trommel for the first time was a great opportunity to meet customers and international distributors such as Tricon Equipment.
“The MDS team was incredibly excited to be exhibiting at ConExpo, particularly as it was our first time attending the show,” Hegarty says.
“North America is the biggest market for our equipment, so it’s an excellent opportunity to meet new and existing distributors and customers to discuss how our solutions support their businesses.”
The revamped M515 model has several new features added to improve transportation, access and stockpile heights. It is ideal for handling rocks up to 800mm in
size and comes fitted with foldout stockpiling conveyors.
MDS M515 trommels are made up of a drum with a 4m fines section and 1.5m mid product section. Different drum options are available to cater for the differing needs of operators. A drum frame with changeable screens and fully welded drums are available as options.
Maintenance on the M515 has been enhanced, with the engine including a swing out feature as well as a swing out access platform whereby operators can access the cabinet more easily. The engine has also been moved to the side of the unit, meaning customers can fit the unit on smaller bed trailers to transport and manoeuvre the trommel more easily.

If you want to make sure that you’re getting the best deals on the market when accessing finance, it’s time to get an expert in your corner. Talk to a Broker can do the hard work for you, allowing you to focus on what’s best for your business
With the end of the financial year coming into view and the Instant Asset Write-Off Scheme ending, now could be a good time to consider investing in expanding your fleet or finally upgrading your truck.
But what if you are strapped for time and what the banks are offering isn’t that great? This is where a broker could be a useful addition to the team to help you find the best deals and make the most of financial incentives on offer, all tailored to the needs of all businesses - small, medium or large.
The financial experts at Sydneybased Talk to a Broker offer the specialist knowledge needed to help tradies and contractors access the best finance options on the market for a wide range of different purposes, whether it’s buying new or used equipment or bolstering cash flow until invoices are paid.
“We finance everything that has wheels or anything that has a serial number,” Talk to a Broker director William Hong explains to Earthmovers & Excavators
“Basically, we fund anything that isn’t a house. We have funded everything from 50-year-old wine presses through to restaurant fitouts, but our bread and butter is vehicles and equipment. Last year, yellow goods or equipment made up more than half of the book. So, we specialise in that area, with our core target audience being tradies and construction businesses.”
Around 90 per cent of Talk to a Broker’s clients are self-employed, Hong explains, with a strong focus on small to medium-sized contractors.
From tradies and construction, hospitality and retail, and professional services to primary production, Talk To A Brokers portfolio of clients is wide range and diverse.
Talk to a Broker also operates across Australia with a network of brokers supported by a head office located in Sydney’s CBD.
“We’ve been operating since 2018, but management has over 45 years’ combined experience. The first year
of operation it was just myself and we’ve since grown to a team of 20,” Hong says.
“My background originally was financing vehicles before I diversified into asset finance. I built up a lot of key relationships in my time at Finsure with tractor, excavator and equipment dealers throughout South Australia, Victoria and Queensland.
“What separates us from a bank –and more importantly, a dealership –is that, with a dealer, they might give you a one-off transaction. You go there, you buy the vehicle and you might get finance with the dealership. You’re generally not there to get other assets financed as well.
“A broker, however, is always going to have your documents and everything ready to point you in the right direction finance-wise so we can get you the best deal for your profile.

For over thirty years Toyota Huski skid steer loaders have built a reputation on performance, driver comfort and legendary reliability. Toyota Material Handling proudly continue this outstanding pedigree with their range of built tough Huski mini excavators.
Stacked with operator features, the range consists of seven models including a 1.3-tonne short-radius machine and six zero tail swing models ranging from 1.6 to 6 tonne, plus famous Huski performance guaranteed to dig in and be productive on every job.
“Another thing is that we’ve got around 80 lenders on our panel, and with 80 lenders comes competition, so you can get a better deal. A dealership or equipment supplier will have one or two and they’re not going to tell you to also go across the road and speak to ANZ or CBA to get a better deal.”
Hong says that it’s having that expert advice and support always on hand that can be such a major benefit when handling what can be a complicated financial process.
“I always say – you go to an accountant because they know tax law really well and they know how to get your taxes done quickly and efficiently. Brokers are the same –they’ll take you to the place that gives you the best deal and the best structure for your business and for yourself. This could be early exit, lower termination fees, or a longer term to help with cash flow. All of that knowledge and capability is what sets us apart from a bank or dealer – they’re not going to have access to the same resources.
“We understand that, with a lot of tradies and self-employed people, they may not be the best with the books or keeping everything up to date paperwork-wise. So, what we find is that a lot of customers come to us because we’re convenient and quick to find a solution for them.
“Having said that we understand our clients are time poor, so they can rest assured that they would have one manager to handle their transaction from start to finish. Which also helps when planning forward e.g. business expansions, new purchases, refinancing. We treat our clients as lifetime relationships.
“We specialise in low doc, which is basically no financials. So, for example, if a customer’s been trading for more than two years and they own a house, we can get finance for them with no financials at all.”
Ongoing relationship
Hong says that Talk to a Broker’s approach goes beyond finding what the best deal on the market is at a given time, with the team providing its clients with information about what is happening in terms of opportunities like the Instant Asset Write-Off Scheme or the current volatility around interest rates.
“We like to educate our existing customers about these things, just so they’re aware,” Hong explains.
“While we don’t provide financial advice, clients can always pick up the phone and speak to us to figure out what the market rates are looking like and what market conditions look like right now – it’s a big selling point for us. You can’t do this easily with your bank or dealership.”
Talk to a Broker has a buying service that sources vehicles for clients – another plus in a time of low stock levels and long wait times. It also provides free local area marketing through the Talk to a Broker website for clients, this is to provide additional support in helping clients’ source more business.
“We do a little bit of free advertising for customers by creating local area web pages to help with online leads for their business. So, if somebody searches for a plumber in Melbourne or an electrician in Chiswick, in time, their business will appear as an option in Google. That’s an added bonus for our customers.”
Hong says that around 95 per cent of Talk to a Broker’s customers return for further asset financing within 18 months, with businesses and sole traders attracted by the speed and convenience of using a broker.
“When you’re dealing with tradies or people who are self-employed, they don’t have time to go home and sit in front the computer for hours after a day’s work,” Hong says.
“The last thing they want to do is deal with banks. We offer convenience and speed and we have a fully Australia-based team at the back end that does all of the processing of our loans. This means we get the best deals faster. The lenders know our reputation, for which we have won awards, due to the quality and processing of our submissions.”
These awards were for Emergent Broker Firm of the Year and Broker of the Year 2022, given by the Commercial & Asset Finance Brokers Association (CAFBA) for outstanding service.
“Those awards are actually nominated by the lenders, so we’re well respected out there,” Hong explains.
“One question we have been asked is what sets you apart from the next brokerage or lender? For us the answer is simple, it’s the same that could be asked of any tradie, builder, or service provider. It comes down to reputation, trust, and expertise. We believe these attributes are reflected well in our awards, detailed reviews, and most of all…the large amount of repeat and referral business we receive from our clients.
“We do more than just provide finance; we build long lasting relationships and are essentially a personal banker for business owners.”
But there’s no resting on laurels for the Talk to a Broker team. A recent office move to a larger space will soon be followed by additional partnerships and technology enhancements.
“We’ve spent the last three months training the new operations part of our team and we are looking to achieve double the amount of business we managed last year,” Hong says.
“The focus is very much on continuing our growth whilst maintaining service levels with our clients.”

Italian pedigree
with the best of Italian engineering,
While Verona is perhaps most famous for being the home of Romeo and Juliet, the northern Italian city also lays claim to a full range of highly specialised mulchers.
The Berti Macchine Agricole SpA (Berti) manufacturing plant is located just outside Verona and has been the site of its agricultural and hydraulically operated machinery production for more than 60 years.
By using quality components, coupled with modern engineering and manufacturing processes, Berti has grown to become highly specialised in designing and producing industry-leading machines that are sold worldwide. The hydraulically operated mulchers make up Berti’s Professional range, spanning more than 37 models that are available in over 50
different working widths, suitable for excavators from 1.5 to 30 tonnes as well as skid steer and compact track loaders.
Berti’s Professional mulcher range has been sold in Australia for more than 20 years and through its Australian distributor Ag-Pride Australia since 2010, which also distributes its agricultural mulcher range, consisting of over 500 models.
Ag-Pride Australia product manager Lance Hills says Berti’s Professional line of mulchers is designed for grass, heavy green vegetation, regrowth and heavy forestry applications.
“They use high quality bearings, hydraulic motors, wear-resistant teeth and hydraulic valves throughout their production and
heads has something for everyoneand for every mulching application The Berti KX/SSL is among the newer mulcher heads in the professional range and is suitable for skid steers between 50 and 90hp A range of compact track loader models are available
very high-performance steels in many of the bodies and heavy wear parts. They design and build them for an application and they build quality into them,” Hills says.
“Their blade rotors, which are the heart of every machine, are all fabricated using specialised extruded steel tube and, depending on the model, use a combination of Strenx and Hardox steel for added strength and durability.
“The quality is what they’ve always focused on; they don’t build machines just to try and be the cheapest,” he says.”
The smaller excavator models – from 1.5 to 5.5 tonnes – offer a choice of blades or fixed hammers, depending on the application, as well as height-adjustable levelling rollers and self-levelling hitches.
All excavator models from 5.5 to 30 tonnes and compact track loader models have a choice of either swinging hammers or fixed tooth rotors to suit the application.
The hydraulic motors on all models are protected from hydraulic pressure and flow spikes by a valve block – a feature exclusive to Berti –that also provides anti cavitation.
Since Ag-Pride Australia became the distributor of Berti in Australia in 2010, new machinery is continually
brought Down Under for the brand’s growing customer base. Among the new mulchers is the Berti KX/ SSL – a hydraulic forestry mulcher with a fixed tooth rotor for skid steer and compact track loaders in the 50–90hp (37–67kW) range.
The KX/SSL is available in two working widths – 1.5m and 1.7m – and is suitable for mulching branches, scrub, tree trunks and vegetation up to 150mm in diameter.
Hills says an example of Berti’s ability to cater for different use requirements is its ability to design certain models for municipal, contractor and forestry applications, such as roadsides, embankments, drains, green vegetation clearing and heavy forestry work.
“Ultimately, though, the emphasis Berti puts on quality from its Italian manufacturing plant and our commitment to genuine parts support here in Australia is what makes its Australian customers happy,” he says.
“We do get repeat business – we have a lot of customers that buy our machines again because of the job they do, the long life which they get from the product and the aftersales support with parts and service which we provide here in Australia.”
Berti machines are sold throughout the country by a select group of authorised dealers. To find a dealer near you, email sales@agpride.com.au or visit www.agpride.com.au

“This machine is built to deliver exceptional performance and reliability, making it the ideal choice for heavy-duty applications in the construction, mining and quarrying industries,” Olympus Loaders founder Simon Collins says.
The YX656 is designed for bulk-out works, sporting a larger transmission and heavier diffs that are rated greater than the standard size in the 18-tonne loader range. This helps the loader work with biggercapacity buckets to move greater amounts of product, at a lower cost to the contractor.
“The transmission is a two-stage planetary system that acts like an automatic, with first gear combining first and second gear speed and second gear combining third and fourth gear speed, so you still have the torque down low for breakout force and then the top end speed for traveling,” Collins says. Top travel speed for the YX656 is 35km/h.
One of the key features of the YX656 is its powerful engine, which delivers up to 220 horsepower (162kW) and 1,000Nm of torque. This engine is paired with the previously mentioned state-of-the-art
transmission system that provides smooth and efficient operation. Collins points out the simplicity of the design, with no computer control or complicated electronics to make maintenance easier.
The YX656 also features a spacious and comfortable cab that has a rollover protection system (ROPS) and has been designed with the operator in mind. The cab is equipped with a range of features including an improved air conditioning system, a sound system and a comfortable suspension seat, ensuring that the operator can work comfortably and efficiently throughout the day.
The YX656 also includes a range of other features and technologies that
make it a highly versatile and capable machine, Collins says.
“It is equipped with a hydraulic quick coupler that allows for easy and quick attachment changes, an automatic greasing system and a range of optional attachments, such as an assortment of buckets, forks and grapples,” he says.
“Furthermore, the YX656 features a range of safety features and technologies, including a rearview camera, an emergency stop button and a range of warning lights and alarms.”
These safety features are designed to protect the operator and those working around the machine, ensuring that everyone stays safe.
“Overall, the Olympus YX656 wheel loader is an exceptional machine that delivers outstanding performance, reliability and versatility,” he adds.
“Whether you’re working in construction, mining, or quarrying, this machine has the power, capability and safety features you need to get the job done quickly, efficiently and safely.
“If you’re in the market for a new wheel loader, the YX 656 should definitely be at the top of your list.”

With production capabilities expanded at its Stapylton waste recycling site near Brisbane, BMI Group is now upgrading and expanding its fleet of machinery, with two Hyundai HX model excavators, two Hyundai 770-9 wheel loaders and two Ammann rollers helping it prepare for its biggest year yet
Got your six
Around 12 months ago, Earthmovers & Excavators spoke with BMI Group operations manager AJ Ali about a Hyundai HX500L excavator that had been delivered to the company’s waste recycling facility in Stapylton by Porter Hire.
Now, with the HX500L’s operator comfort and fuel efficiency having impressed in its year on site, BMI Group has made the decision to significantly expand its Stapylton fleet of machinery with additional excavators, loaders and rollers – all sourced from Porter Group.
In addition to a new HX350L excavator, two 770-9 wheel loaders and a HX400L excavator from Hyundai, two new Ammann rollers will also be delivered for landfill compaction.
Ali says it was the expansion of BMI Group’s construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling facilities at the site in Stapylton, on the southern edge of Brisbane, that prompted the purchases.
“In the last 12 months we’ve installed a C&D plant to process construction waste,” Ali says. “People deliver the waste to the site and we pull out the concrete, timber and steel for recycling. These materials go back into the market again, so we’re minimising waste going to landfill.
“Concrete from the new C&D plant then goes down to our crushing plant, which makes aggregate, roadbase and crusher dust that we sell to the market. The timber that comes out of it we grind down and turn into soil conditioners and compost material. Some also goes towards power generation, where they use it for fuel. The ferrous metal goes back to metal recyclers.”
The Stapylton facility, one of six sites in Queensland that BMI Group runs under its resource recovery division, accepts a wide range of C&D waste for recycling and disposal, processing around 150,000 tonnes a year. The new C&D plant is helping BMI Group more efficiently sort
the waste, giving it the capability to recycle up to 80 per cent of material that goes through the plant.
“We’re having great success with the new plant,” Ali confirms.
“We’ve just completed Stage Two on the plant, whereby we upgraded it by installing two density separators. This makes it easier to recognise the material and clean it up, so it pulls out cleaner concrete, cleaner timber and so on.”
Fleet expansion
Alongside this greater capacity for waste processing, the instant asset write-off scheme and an ageing fleet have also prompted a refresh and expansion of the machinery on site.
The first of the new machines to hit the ground last month was a Hyundai HX350L excavator, which is replacing a Hyundai 320LC-9.
“That machine’s done about 15,000
hours, we had a great run out of it,” Ali says.
“We replaced it with the HX350L to feed a mobile crushing plant, which crushes concrete to make roadbase and aggregate.
“The 320LC-9 had proven itself really well in that environment, so we decided to get the new HX series to replace it.”
Ali says the ease of control and comfort of the cabin were key attractions of the new HX350L, along with the machine’s material handling capabilities.
“We only got it recently, but we’ve already noticed that the fuel efficiency’s good, along with stability,” he says.
“The excavator sits on a pad to feed the crushing plant and it swings over the top into the hopper to feed it, so stability is a major component. The breakout force in picking up materials
is great as well – it doesn’t struggle.
“Operator comfort is also important – we need to make sure that the operators are happy, too.”
The safety aspect of having a 360degree view through the All Around Viewing Monitoring camera system, which comes as standard on HX series machines supplied by Porter Group, is a huge benefit to the team.
“Because you’re working in recycling material, the bird’s-eye view is a significant safety feature because you can see all around the machine, so we can make sure that the machine doesn’t swing or hit anything like a foreign object that’s sticking out of the material,” Ali says.
“That’s a great feature on there. Visibility out of the front is great as well.”
Two new Hyundai 770-9 wheel loaders have also been delivered –one of which is now busy at work in
PORTERGROUP
the sales yard while the other forms stockpiles of recycled materials.
“We originally had four 770-9s, ranging between six to 15,000 hours, and again we had a great run out of them,” Ali explains as to why two more of this model were chosen.
“They’re solid loaders, especially when working with waste. We really put them through their paces in the environment they work in and, even with the oldest loader clocking 15,000 hours, we haven’t done a single component rebuilt yet. They just don’t break down – they’ve been highly reliable, excellent loaders.”
Ali explains that one of the challenges with handing construction material can be the amount of dust in the air that clogs radiators and contribute to the machinery overheating. However, with the Hyundai wheel loaders, ease of maintenance means that
Operator comfort is also important – we need to make sure that the operators are happy, too.
accessing the radiator to clean it is a simple process.
“They’ve got auto-greasers on them, so they maintain themselves,” he adds.
“Maintenance is very simple and the operators are very happy with it. And, for the pre-start checklist, accessibility is very simple.”
A second new excavator will also be delivered to the site – a HX400L –that will replace a Hyundai R380LC-9 model that has 14,000 hours on it.
“Its primary job will be to prep oversized concrete, ready to go into a jaw crusher to be crushed down, and removing any oversized steel and reo [reinforcement],” Ali says.
“As the pulveriser is a heavier attachment, we went with the HX400L for its stability.”
Two new Ammann rollers complete the new run of machinery –a padfoot and smooth drum – which will be used for cell construction and compaction of landfill material in the old quarry on site. Previous experience of the brand means
Ali is confident that high quality compaction will be achieved, which is vital for the process.
“At Stapylton we’ve turned the quarry into a landfill,” Ali explains.
“So, to do the base, we’re going to compact it before we line it. This is one of the key things to achieve for stability. If we don’t achieve the compaction, when we lay the liner on there, if the ground moves it will rip the liner, letting contaminated liquid seep into the groundwater.
“We’ve previously brought in a couple of Ammann rollers on hire from Porter Hire and we found that the reliability and the compaction we achieved on a minimum pass was great, hence why for we went with the two new rollers.”
Porter Group
BMI Group has been working with Porter Group for over 10 years, with this latest purchase of six machines paying testament to the strong relationship between the two companies.
Maintenance is very simple and the operators are very happy with it. A

“The biggest thing is reliability,” Ali says when asked why BMI continues to invest in Porter Group machinery.
“Another aspect is aftersales support, which is crucial. Porter Group has been excellent in this regard and we’re getting great reliability out of the machines.
“This high level of support runs from aftersales through to the spare parts, workshop and field service teams. Plus, staying in touch with the actual sales rep is important to us – making sure that, if there are any issues, that they can rectified straightaway.
“The service department and parts department are a great bunch of people to work with. If you’ve got an issue, they’re always prompt in response, which is one of the key things when you’re running a big site like this one – making sure your uptime is 90 per cent plus.”

All in one
On May 11–13 one of Australia’s largest field days – Norco Primex – will open the gates to thousands of people, with exhibitors, networking events, industry hubs and more, covering everything from agriculture and fishing to the natural resources, earthmoving and forestry sectors.
Between 25,000 and 30,000 visitors are expected to attend the Richmond Valley Events Centre in Casino in the Northern Rivers area of NSW over the three-day event, with over 350 exhibitors and five new industry hubs featured.
From its first show in 1985, Primex has now expanded its reach beyond agriculture to showcase a significant spread of brands and dealers focused on construction, forestry and associated trades.
“Originally, Primex was a trade event associated with beef and agriculture, starting with about 40 exhibitors,” Primex managing director Bruce Wright says.
“It’s evolved over time to incorporate and profile all primary industry throughout a broader target area, which runs from Taree up through the New England region and across into southeast Queensland.
“We’re Australia’s largest coastalbased field day and the machinery
side has always been a very strong core for the event. Because of the diversity of primary industry that’s in our region – it’s not just broadacre – there’s a lot of variety, which makes it a municipal event, not just a rural regional event.”
Although agricultural machinery is still a key aspect of the event, there’s plenty to see if you are an earthmoving contractor looking to see what’s new on the market, or even a farmer looking to invest in a
dozer of your own. Big brands and dealers including Onetrac, Sany, Kubota, WesTrac, Komatsu and RDO Equipment will be on site, with plenty of opportunities for visitors to get in the driver’s seat.
“There’s always a very strong component of loaders and excavators, and we cover everything from plumbing through to forestry
and major construction,” Wright says.
“With the reconstruction of the North Coast and a lot of other areas, there’s going to be a lot of money injected into infrastructure in the next five to 10 years. With that comes major investment in machinery and equipment to facilitate it, and we want to be a focal point for that.
“We estimate that over 50 per cent of the people that come to our event are what we term ‘trade delegates’ that are either in farming or in some form of primary production, such as earthmoving, quarrying and construction. We are the only event to service the region like we do as a machinery-based trade event.”
Industry hubs
Although there will be machinery galore on site, Primex also operates as an education and networking event, covering issues that span multiple sectors, such as supply chain management, attraction of skilled workers and business management.
This year will see five new industry hubs on site: Health & Wellbeing; Business, Innovation & Agritech; Education & Careers; Forestry & Timber; and Affordable Housing. Each of these hubs will bring together a wide range of stakeholders in these areas, connecting visitors to government organisations, local support groups, experts and advice covering everything from accessing investment for start-ups to careers, regulation updates and succession planning.
“We’ve had coverage of these topics before, but this is the first time we’ve established them as hubs, just so that they are easy access points for our visitors,” Wright says.
“Some of them are reflective of our region, like the affordable housing side of things, while others are broadly applicable. All industries are looking for staff, so the education, recruitment and careers aspects cover every industry sector throughout the entire supply chain, whether you have kids leaving school or you are wanting to access professional development, or move into another industry sector, all that information’s there.”
Family fun
Primex isn’t just for those working in industry either – it’s a family-friendly event that showcases the best of the local area with the Nourish Food & Drink Festival. Celebrating local producers, there will be live chef demonstrations, entertainment and plenty of locally produced products.
“A lot of businesses, like earthmoving contractors, are still family-based businesses,” Wright says.
“So we wanted to create an event where the family can come and
enjoy themselves as well. It’s not just about hopping in and pulling the levers, there’s a strong social and networking element as well. Having events like the food festival offers the opportunity to engage, build relationships and networks during and following the event.”
For those wanting to make a holiday out of their trip to Casino and the Northern Rivers, the Plan, Play & Stay campaign on the Primex website has special accommodation and destination experiences available, with a wide range of ideas and what’s happening on the NSW North Coast so visitors can make the most of their time there.
“This campaign is designed to assist and support visitors to easily access what’s going on and what opportunities there are throughout our region, to have an amazing time combining the benefits of attending Primex and seeing all the leading brands and products, while enjoying the time and making the trip a working holiday,” Wright says.
“Primex has it all and punches beyond its weight as a machinery event in regional Australia and we’re very excited to welcome everyone into this special part of the world and get the most out of this great event!”
Primex will take place May 11–13 in Casino. For more information and a 25 per cent discount on gate admission, visit:

Fleet focus
Rokbak’s improved telematics system helps customers take a metaphorical load off their minds
The improved Haul Track telematics system was unveiled by Rokbak at the ConExpo show in Las Vegas in March.
Haul Track helps customers manage their operating costs by monitoring everything from fuel consumption to machine problems, which, if neglected, could result in unplanned downtime.
The articulated hauler manufacturer says the improved system targets its four product focus areas – innovation, sustainability, connected services and efficiencies – meeting market demand for higher levels of connectivity and automated functionality.
Greatly simplifying fleet management, it offers a range of cutting-edge features that provide enhanced levels of machine protection against operator misuse and unexpected downtime, says
“Haul Track puts machine owners back in the operator’s seat, figuratively speaking – reassuring them that their valuable investment is in safe hands,” Urquhart says.
“Accompanied by a new website that provides an easily customisable dashboard to simplify and speed up how owners view and retrieve operating information from afar, it offers a much more accurate and cost-effective insight into a whole host of factors that have the capacity to make or break their bottom line.”
Using GPS technology to transmit detailed real-time machine location and tracking information in the form of easy-to-read, full-colour PDF reports to the customer’s mobile device or PC, Haul Track removes the complexity of keeping tabs on even the largest hauler fleets.
Haul Track now complies with the AEMP Telematics Standard 2.0 Application Programming Interface. This allows owners of mixed fleets to manage their telematics data in one place. Data is presented in a standard format, which means the output from Haul Track can be easily integrated with customers’ own systems.
By providing managers with a deeper understanding of how much fuel is consumed per payload, and how to optimise it, total cost of ownership can easily be calculated and improved with Rokbak’s optional on-board weighing (OBW) system. And in highlighting key metrics such as sub-optimal travel speed, dump counts and load cycles, for example, this performance history can also be used as an asset management tool to improve efficiency and plan future maintenance schedules. With the power to pinpoint any

one of their machines anywhere in the world, owners can not only quickly isolate a specific hauler’s data but even see exactly where it’s been working and track all accumulative loads.
By taking a deep dive into a variety of software parameters – such as travel speed, fuel consumption, temperatures and pressures – at any time, owners can also quickly pull up historical data to look for patterns and identify operator training needs.
The optional OBW system also helps identify habitual underloading or overloading in order to maximise efficiency onsite. Rokbak says OBW offers huge potential to monitor production management and costs for higher product efficiency.
“Now it’s easy to work out how many tonnes you’ve moved each day,” Urquhart says.
“Likewise, once you have visibility of the unit and its operations, long idle times and underloading can be monitored and mitigated.”
Uptime benefits
Rather than forgetting maintenance work, or passively waiting until the scheduled hour arrives before changing fluids, etc., owners can proactively monitor the health of a variety of machine systems via easily understandable diagnostic and preventative maintenance data. They can also view critical information whenever system fault codes are triggered. With this crucial data at their fingertips, they can anticipate and plan interventions at a time that will minimise disruption to productivity while prolonging component lifecycles, or, in the unlikely worstcase scenario, remove the machine from duty to prevent the problem from escalating further. The system can even be set to email technicians when a hauler is within a set number of hours of its next scheduled service.
The new maintenance package gives customers access to important service information like service kit
An optional on-board weighing system will help operators monitor habitual underloading or overloading to maximise efficiency
part numbers and required actions at the specified service interval.
“When you’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on your machines, you need to protect that investment from misuse, whether deliberate or unintentional,” Urquhart says.
“Rokbak’s Haul Track telematics system is designed to take a load off our customers’ minds so they can keep their haulers secure, monitor their health, manage machine performance and productivity and improve site safety. Once plant owners start using Haul Track, they don’t know what they’d do without it.”
Haul Track hardware is fitted as standard on all Rokbak EU Stage V and Tier 4 Final articulated haulers. For more information, visit: www.rokbak.com
Ease of use
Cat’s Ease of Use E-Fence and Indicate technologies for excavators has been expanded to more models, designed to appeal to machinery operators looking to achieve greater control in their work and especially those who are new to the job.
Cat’s Queensland and Northern Territory dealer Hastings Deering has a range of mini excavator models with these additional features available to purchase, with the functionality expanding to further models soon.
The E-Fence function constrains machine motion to within an operator’s preset boundaries, while the Indicate function helps operators to reach grade faster.
Hastings Deering sales representative for new and used equipment Brett Sutcliffe says the features are a great benefit for operators in terms of improved safety and productivity.
“E-Fence was originally introduced to the market on the offset boom [knuckle boom] E series mediumsized excavators and has become a staple on the later models from the F-series through to the NextGen small, medium and large excavators,” he says.
“The feature has now been introduced to the 306, 308 and 309 mini excavators, with it becoming available on the smaller 303.5 to 305 models in the near future.
“E-Fence works by automatically constraining machine motion within operator pre-set boundaries for ceiling, floor, wall and swing to avoid
structures overhead, underground, in front or to the left or right of the machine. This makes it ideal for new operators as they can work within set boundary parameters. Once set, no part of the boom, stick or bucket will pass the defined boundary limits.
“Indicate provides visual and audible indicators to where the bucket is versus a target grade to cut and fill to exact specifications the first time without overcutting,” he says.
Sutcliffe says that the system is an entry-level grade system for digging footings, septic systems, residential foundations, slope work and similar applications with level sites.
“The operator selects target depth and slope from the in-cab guidance system and the monitor provides real-time work-in-progress and distance to grade feedback,” he says.
“However, this doesn’t include the ability to automatically adjust stick, boom or bucket position, for which you will need the Cat Grade functionality.”
For workers day-to-day, Sutcliffe says the boundaries set by the E-Fence function will help prevent property damage and improve safety for other workers around the machine.
The Indicate function assists with preventing over or undercutting when trenching, which will save customers time and money on the job, he adds.
“Our industry is always demanding new ways to improve safety, increase efficiency and reduce rework,” he says.
“These new features will provide another tool to our customers on their journey to achieving these goals.”
The E-Fence and Indicate features are available as factory-fitted options or as an aftermarket install on select models. Check with your dealer to see if your older Cat machinery can be retrofitted.

Alternative option
With Cobra Equipment unveiling a new grader at field days in May, it could be time to check out Shantui, one of the world’s best-selling machinery brands
Shantui is the world’s largest manufacturer of bulldozers. Its strong demand internationally and ability to pass European and American emissions and safety standards has led to this top position.
The range of bulldozers it offers is highly diversified, with many options specific for swamps, deserts, highlands, power plants, forestry, landfill applications, construction and general earthmoving. Shantui also produces graders, excavators, loaders, rollers, road and cement/ asphalt handling machinery, truck cranes and more.
In Australia, word is getting out about the quality and affordability of Shantui machinery, with its equipment standing up well next to major machinery brands.
Cobra Equipment Sales, founded in 2005, has long focused on supplying top quality new earthmoving equipment and is proud to have been an authorised dealer for Shantui Construction Machinery since 2018.
Cobra Equipment Sales director George Nason bought his first piece of equipment at the age of 19 and, with 40 years’ experience in the earthmoving industry, he can effectively evaluate the quality of machinery and how it will perform onsite.
Cobra Equipment Sales will be showing Shantui equipment at the Primex Expo in Casino on May 11–13 and then at the FNQ Rotary Field Days in Mareeba on May 24–26. Here it will be premiering the Shantui SG21-B6 grader – the first of this new model to be shown in Australia.
Cobra Equipment Sales will also be showing a Shantui DH17-B2 hydrostatic bulldozer, Shantui SE150 excavator and Shantui SD13F bulldozer at Primex.
Speaking about the reason he went with Shantui equipment, Nason explains: “I thought the bulldozer and grader market was not as crowded as the loader and excavator market.
“For 18 years Cobra has sold a lot of new loaders and the majority of these machines are still operating. The loader market has now been inundated with a lot of cheap inferior product. As an example, our parts department is always chasing up parts for obscure loaders that have been imported by companies no longer in business. In comparison, the Shantui product is a major brand and is here to stay with ongoing support and parts supply.
“It is not easy to start with a lesser-known brand. However, our
continued hard work is paying off as we now are getting more orders and see an expanding future for both Cobra and Shantui.
“Some of our Shantui excavators and loaders have been in use for over four years and the owners are so pleased with the performance of their machines that they have already purchased more Shantui equipment. We have seasoned contractors telling us that the performance of the dozers are superior to other brand machines.
“Cobra is currently in discussions with agents in NSW and north Queensland to assist with enquiries. I believe that more and more people in the industry are becoming aware of the Shantui brand and the value and quality it offers.”

Trimble’s new Siteworks Machine Guidance Module gives contractors an entry point into construction surveying
Excavator guidance and site surveying will be easier with Trimble’s new Siteworks Machine Guidance Module, the company says.
The module extends Trimble Siteworks software to support on-machine excavator guidance and operator assistance, in addition to its surveying and layout abilities.
The module will allow contractors to employ the site positioning system’s hardware and software to execute a variety of onsite applications including surveying, machine guidance, in-field design and reporting.
The machine guidance module has been designed for small site and utility contractors, letting users move the system across several excavators and jobsites as an entry-level machine guidance and surveying solution.
Current users of the Siteworks software can use their existing technology on-machine, using a simple-to-install machine kit and the new software module.
Trimble civil speciality solutions general manager Kevin Garcia says the new module will provide its users will a range of benefits for small site contractors.
“The new Siteworks Machine Guidance Module is purpose-built to be versatile, portable and easy to use, giving local contractors an entrypoint into construction surveying and machine guidance,” Garcia says.
“Our goal is to give users all of the benefits of Trimble Siteworks at the tip of the bucket, essentially turning the machine into a surveyor. Contractors can get more done with less training and time, and utilise their personnel for other tasks, while also moving workers out of trenches and away from equipment operating on the jobsite.”
Trimble says the Siteworks Machine Guidance System includes the SPS986 or R780 GNSS Smart Antenna with tilt compensation, the PinPoint highprecision positioning engine and Trimble field tablet or smart device that supports Trimble Siteworks software.
Using the Siteworks software, contractors can design, measure and lay out projects, which can then be transferred to the GNSS receiver and field tablet to provide in-cab 3D machine-guidance and grade checking without a surveyor.
Trimble’s CenterPoint RTX correction service can be used to work offsite without a local base station or VRS network, with worldwide accuracy via satellite or cellular. Information can also be shared between the users and between the jobsite and office.
Trimble’s Siteworks Machine Guidance Module was unveiled at ConExpo in Las Vegas.

Site safety
An e-fence function has been integrated into Leica’s machine control software for greater safety on work sites
Surveying systems company Leica Geosystems and Xwatch Safety Solutions have developed a software solution where users can create or import 3D avoidance zones above and below the surface area.
“Xwatch connected an XW5, a height slew and rated capacity indicator system to the Leica MC1 machine control software,” Xwatch sales and operations director Dan Leaney says.
“The integration of the XW5 provides a virtual wall with height and slew as well as depth control, which enables the recognition of cables and utilities from the MC1 software. This allows the operator to work around the avoidance zones with ease, across the entire construction site.”
This new solution not only improves safety for construction workers and pedestrians around busy work sites, but also protects existing infrastructure.
Critical avoidance areas include overhead obstructions such as powerlines, underground services and operations in close proximity to pedestrian walkways, live carriageways and public roads. This new solution offers the excavator operator an additional safeguard against these potential hazards.
Setting up 3D avoidance zones within the Leica MC1 platform is easy, enables operators to focus on their tasks and provides construction professionals with more control and peace of mind that their jobsite is safe and productive.
“Leica Geosystems’ machine control solutions have been one of the frontrunners regarding people-plant interfaces,” Leica Geosystems VP machine control, technology Tommi Kauppinen says.
“Overall, safety awareness solutions are a high priority. We see these features as enablers on our journey toward a higher level of autonomy. Now, our customers have access to a best-in-class solution for safety awareness as well as asset and infrastructure protection thanks to the collaboration of these two industry leaders.”
UNDERGROUND ASSETS
Service spotter
The locator can help users find and store information about underground assets
Vermeer launched its Verifier G3+ utility locator at ConExpo, which pairs with smartphones using the G3+ Map mobile app to plot location information, including depth, current index, GPS data, utility type, device name and the operator who performed the work.
The data-capturing ability of the Verifier G3+ locator allows contractors and utility owners to capture and store information about construction projects. That means they can also provide more information to their teams and customers.
“Tracking and storing records about the specific location of underground utilities is vital,” Vermeer MV Solutions product specialist II Aaron James says.
“With many lines out-of-sight in the congested areas, identifying and tracking one from another can be challenging. The technology that powers the Vermeer Verifier G3+ utility locator helps operators accurately identify and track individual utilities in crowded rights-of-way. Its water-resistant, rugged design is well suited to the harsh everyday conditions that operators work in.”
The GPS-enabled Verifier G3+ utility locator can determine underground current direction against adjacent signals from other utilities. It can detect ambient noise so the operator can switch to a different frequency for a particular jobsite. Also, operators can adjust transmitter frequency and power outputs from up to 500ft (152.4m) away using a wireless
connection. Saved data from the locator is transferred using Bluetooth 5.0 to the G3+ Map app. The data can also be uploaded to the Vermeer Projects bore planning tool.
The Vermeer Verifier G3+ offers operators three locating modes: peak, peak/null and null. It has an exclusive water-resistant, one-size-fits-all coil clamp that does not need to encircle a utility to induce a signal. A mini probe can be added to track the location and depth of non-metallic pipe accurately.
This latest generation of Vermeer utility locators replaces the standard Verifier G3 utility locator and comes with three-year coverage.

ROBOTICS
Rebar robot
The IronBot robot, which lifts, carries and places rebar, was released at ConExpo in March
Advanced Construction Robotics
(ACR) launched its IronBot during ConExpo.
IronBot augments construction crews by lifting, carrying, and placing up to 5,000-pound (2.2-tonne) bundles of rebar in a transverse or longitudinal orientation without the need for heavy lifting from workers.
The IronBot can be combined with ACR’s TyBot, its rebar-tying robot, which can lead to significant time savings during rebar installation.
“We are confident the combination of TyBot and IronBot generates a disruptive technology, meaning the time and cost savings are so significant on a job that it will disrupt the way our industry installs reinforcing steel,” ACR founder and executive chairman Stephen Muck says.
IronBot completed its inaugural project in February on the Port St. Lucie West Boulevard Bridge in Port St. Lucie, FL alongside Shelby Erectors. The originally estimated duration of
the rebar installation was 14 days. With the Bot bundle, the same amount of work was completed in only seven days.
“We were excited to be able to have IronBot and TyBot work together alongside our crews on this project. We were impressed that we could slash our rebar installation schedule in half. We are actively looking for new projects to incorporate the Bot bundle in our operations,” Shelby Erectors COO Jack Nix.
“I am so excited to see our initial prediction of cutting schedules by at least 50 per cent come to fruition on IronBot’s maiden voyage. This was a perfect example of how field teams, working alongside our technology, can form a ‘modern crew’ to unleash disruptive productivity levels,” ACR CEO Danielle Proctor says.
“This robotic revolution provides innovative construction firms the ability to become game-changers by adopting and putting their ‘modern crew’ to work.”
The drum cutter range is available for 1.8 to 54-tonne excavators
ACQUISITION Cutting edge
Auger Torque will now manufacture drum cutters and sell the range globally
Auger Torque has announced the addition of the Kinshofer drum cutter range to its portfolio of products. Originally a Kinshofer product, Auger Torque has taken over the manufacturing, development, sales and support for this attachment range. This range of drum cutters are available in nine models suitable for 2 to 60 ton (1.8 to 54-tonne) excavators, featuring an exclusive pick angle and optimal chisel arrangement for high performance and minimal wear, making these attachments ideal for mining, tunnelling, road construction and demolition.
The attachment’s heavy-duty sealing system enables underwater operation as deep as 25 metres for applications such as bridge repair.
Quiet operation and minimal vibration of the attachment is achieved through a high-torque hydraulic motor. The motor powers the drum cutter while its gear reduction optimises torque and cutting force.
The higher torque enables the attachment to achieve greater cutting efficiency while operating at a slower speed than competitive drum cutters. The controlled speed of the attachment reduces noise and vibration, improving operator comfort. Additionally, the hydraulic motor is adjustable to match the output of an excavator’s hydraulics.

A new apprenticeship scheme will incentivise construction students to finish their training by offering $2,000 and an equipment allowance
The Western Australian government is investing $4.2 million to deliver a new Apprentice Completion Grant program to tackle skills shortages and build a sustainable construction workforce. Research shows that, currently, only half of construction trade students finish their training. To incentivise more students to complete their course, WA’s Construction Training Fund’s Apprentice Completion Grant will provide eligible apprentices and trainees with a one-off grant of $2,000 and up to a $500 allowance for the purchase of work-related tools and/or safety equipment at the completion of their apprenticeship. The Apprentice Completion Grant will support more than 1,900 apprentices and trainees due to complete their qualifications in the 2023–24 financial year. This program will encourage apprentices to remain in training, while helping to build a skilled workforce for the future.
Comments attributed to Premier and Treasurer Mark McGowan:
“My government is committed to building Western Australia’s construction workforce by investing in apprenticeships and removing barriers for young people who want to get into the industry,” WA Premier and Treasurer Mark McGowan says.
“While it’s vital we encourage more people to begin apprenticeships in construction it’s just as important they finish their qualifications.
“These one-off payments provide an incentive for up-and-coming tradies to complete their qualification, while helping to build a safer and more sustainable workforce for the future.”
The one-year program will commence on July 1, 2023.

Risk warning
The Centre for Construction Research and Training has created a list of suggestions to increase safety when using drones on worksites
The Centre for Construction Research and Training at the University of Florida has warned that using drones on construction sites can distract workers and increase the risk of falls when working at height.
Using a virtual construction site to simulate high-risk scenarios alongside user experiments involving wearable sensors and self-reported questionnaires, the results showed that construction professionals generally have a negative attitude towards working with or near drones, with drones at a greater distance causing more distraction rather than drones within four feet as workers were more likely to look away from their tasks watch what the drone was doing.
The research was prompted by the high risk of death and injuries on construction sites, particularly with regards to falling from a height. Noting the US construction industry was the fastest commercial adopter of drones, the Centre says that this raises novel occupational health and safety issues that have not yet been widely evaluated. This includes the risk of distracting workers from tasks, potentially increasing the risk of them being injured or killed, as well as psychological issues around the perception of being watched or their work monitored.
The Centre says that although construction workers may initially have a negative attitude towards
drones, this improved after they interacted with drones within a virtual reality setup, which helped them practice working with or alongside drones.
However, participants still reported that drones operating at farther distances caused greater distractions. This could be that drones operating close to workers – although still considered to be annoying – are seen as being part of the team and quickly become a familiar sight, while drones operating further away take on a surveillance role that increases distraction and negative attitudes.
The Centre says these results show workers need to be trained on how to work alongside drones so drone operators safely pilot their drones around workers and workers become familiarwith seeing drones on site.
It also says that drones need to be equipped to manage failures in software; should have features such as parachutes or airbags to reduce impact velocity; and need to incorporate technology such as obstacle avoidance and safe pathfinding to avoid collisions with workers. The Centre also says further regulation is required to specify where and how drones are operated on construction sites to reduce the risk of injury.
Shaping careers PROGRAM
CCF Victoria will deliver a program to help women and First Nations participants enter and build a career within the civil construction industry
CCF Victoria has been awarded a major government grant to deliver a new program called Pathways –Shaping Careers, Reshaping Industry.
Commencing in June 2023, the Pathways program will support 120 women and First Nations participants on a career journey within the civil construction industry through employment placement and the completion of a recognised apprenticeship.
CCF Victoria says that as well as developing career pathways into civil construction for women and First Nations people, the program also will see participants work together with employers on a unique culture preparedness program.
The program will be run by Civil Train, CCF Victoria’s registered training organisation, in conjunction with Group Training and First Nations organisational partners including Protech, Dream Path and Ripple Effect.
“This program is delivering solutions by creating careers, empowering employers and connecting communities,” CCF Victoria CEO Lisa Kinross says.
“It is about providing a pathway to shape a career in civil construction particularly for women and First Nations people who are underrepresented in our industry.
“The civil construction industry wants and deserves the benefits of
The Pathways program will support women and First Nations people get started in a career in civil engineering
a diverse and inclusive workforce. We need solutions to make this happen and our civil contractors need support during this culture transition – this is why this program is shaping careers and reshaping our industry.”
Participants will be trained in a range of areas including site induction, culture preparedness and life skills. They will then complete the RII30920 Certificate III in Civil Construction Apprenticeship while at a work-based placement with a potential employer.
A ‘Buddy Program’ accompanies student participants progressing to placement locations to assist with their growth and development, also accompanied by a range of targeted support mechanisms that enhance retention. All program completions are guaranteed interviews.
Throughout the program, employers will have access to an Employer Support Program as well as a Coach on Call to assist with the development of their apprentices and useful tools that support supervisors and work crews. Each placement employer also has the opportunity to complete the Culture Preparedness program, which will assist in aligning training processes with the relevant skills suitable for individual workplaces.

“This enables us to further enhance our technology and product development in core GNSS, agriculture, construction, marine and machine control markets, and to directly integrate our technology with CNH Industrial’s world class equipment.”
Consideration for the acquisition is preliminarily determined at $175 million and is expected close within the third quarter of 2023.
TECHNOLOGY
Developed by Next World Enterprises, the new virtual reality training software provides immersive scenarios to help students understand high-risk environments and potential hazards, without compromising their safety.
The Queensland government has committed an additional $5.7 million to expand the Centre further.
“We’re proud to support the Resources Centre of Excellence in Mackay and the role it plays in training the next generation of workers in Queensland’s resources sector,” Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert says.
“This new VR lab will help equip our resources workers with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed well into the future – and most importantly keep them safe.
Resources Centre of Excellence CEO Stephen Boxall says the Centre was proud of the role it haad played in bringing government, industry education and research together to foster innovation for the resources industry as a whole.
“The virtual reality training lab has been an 18-month collaboration with Next World Enterprises and it’s fantastic to see it come to fruition,” he says.
“It showcases the incredible depth of talent we have in Queensland to produce this cutting-edge technology.”
In addition to the virtual reality training lab, the centre boasts a 6,800 square metre Underground Simulator Mining Facility that replicates the physical conditions of working underground.
Truck trial
Australia’s first zero emission aggregate heavy vehicle trial has been successfully completed in a collaboration between CHL, Holcim and Janus Electric
CHL, Holcim Australia and Janus Electric have announced the completion of a zero-emissions electric truck trial in Queensland, which they say is an Australian first for the construction sector.
The trial began in November 2022, using a Janus Electric converted prime mover to transport sand and aggregates from Holcim’s plants across Brisbane and southeast Queensland. The trial tested the economic viability, reliability and performance of the vehicle.
Holcim Australia and New Zealand CEO George Agriogiannis says the initiative is aligned to its Accelerating Green Growth strategy of achieving net zero by 2050.
“Holcim, along with our partners CHL and Janus Electric, has achieved an Australian first – the first zeroemissions heavy vehicle delivering raw materials.”
CHL general manager – operations Jordan Barratt says that there was a clear pathway to commercialisation of the technology in heavy haulage applications.
“We have been operating the Janus Electric truck in short-haul, back-tobase scenarios and found that it can meet our operational requirements. Our goal is to deploy 10 trucks in
southeast Queensland by early 2024, which will be the largest fleet of its kind in Australia. With support from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, Queensland Transport and Main Roads and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, we believe this is very achievable,” Barratt says.
Janus Electric chief executive Lex Forsyth says the success of the trail highlights the potential of exchangeable battery technology, which he says is helping to pave the way for a carbon-zero future.
“Despite this ground-breaking achievement, the lack of government support to adopt this technology is concerning and highlights the need for greater investment and incentives to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport.
“The trial proved the viability of this cutting-edge Australian-designed and manufactured technology. We look forward to the government engaging with Janus Electric and like companies to accelerate the clean energy transition.”
New name
Mine safety
The University of Western Australia has developed a 3D rock analysis technique to better understand rock fracturing in mines
HD Hyundai Infracore will no longer be using Doosan in its corporate name and brand after launching a new construction equipment brand early this year
HD Hyundai Infracore, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai’s Construction Equipment business, is dropping ‘Doosan’ from its name, a year and a half after its acquisition.
“We will proudly become a global player that represents HD Hyundai with this new name and a new mindset,” HD Hyundai Infracore president and CEO Young-cheul Cho says.
“We will also present innovative products and services that are electrified, eco-friendly and unmanned while listening to the voices of our customers and work on becoming a frontrunner in smart construction solutions.”
All three construction equipment businesses of HD Hyundai will be changing their corporate names. Hyundai Construction Equipment has already changed its name to HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, while Hyundai Genuine plans to change its name to HD Hyundai Xitesolution.
The University of Western Australia has released a new report based on research that it says challenges traditional understanding of rock characteristics, with new insights into the potential for ground support failure in underground mining.
Unpredictable rockburst and strainburst events create significant safety hazards for mining personnel, however the factors leading to these events are often poorly understood.
Researchers at UWA’s Australian Centre for Geomechanics have developed a world-first approach analysing rock properties in three dimensions, identifying for the first time attributes that indicate a greater proneness to bursting.
The research also improves understanding of the response of traditional ground support to bursting events, such as the behaviour of bolts holding ground support in place.
The additional measurements can be taken from oriented drillcore obtained during exploration and integrated with regular 3D numerical modelling software to inform better targeted ground support and preventative solutions.
Together with a series of industry recommendations, the approach enables cost effective development of new strategies to improve design and safety solutions for mining operations.
“This research has significant
potential for improved mine safety, hazard awareness and greater understanding of ground support behaviour,” WA Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston says.
“The safety of our mining personnel is of paramount importance and predictive capabilities that enable more effective design solutions are critical to ensure our Western Australian mining industry remains a safe and attractive place to work.
“Through the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia, the Western Australian government continues to invest in research and development to support innovative solutions that benefit the Western Australian community as a whole.”

Carbon crushing
The University of Strathclyde has been exploring ways of trapping carbon dioxide in crushed rock
New research suggests that around 0.5 per cent of global carbon emissions could be captured during the normal crushing process of rocks commonly used in construction, by crushing them in CO2 gas.
A new paper written by researchers at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow says that almost no additional energy would be required to trap the CO2 and would help offset the carbon emissions of the materials and construction industry.
Previous work has explored trapping carbon into single minerals by the same method, but the research at the University of Strathclyde shows this is unstable and dissolves out of the mineral when placed in water.
The new research shows how a larger proportion of CO2 can be trapped in a stable, insoluble form in rocks composed of multiple different minerals by grinding it in CO2 gas. The resulting rock powders can then be stored and used in the environment for construction and other purposes.
The calculation of 0.5 per cent was made for Norway, as an example, because the country publishes annual data on the volume of hard rock aggregate produced for its construction industry and its annual national CO2 emissions are also documented.
“The hope is that the sector could reduce the emissions by adapting the current setups to trap carbon from polluting gas streams such as those from cement manufacture or gas-fired power stations,” principal investigator Professor Rebecca Lunn says.
“The global estimate is based on the assumption that Norway’s construction industry is reasonably typical. Some countries such as Australia and South Africa will actually produce far more, as they have large mining industries and will look to crush and sell the waste rock.”
Auckland is now home to Richie Bros’ first permanent yard in New Zealand. Ritchie Bros says the permanent facility will provide the business with a convenient location to buy and sell machinery.

“This new facility will provide a platform for New Zealanders to sell their machinery to a global audience, opening up new opportunities for international trade.
“We believe that the launch of our new permanent yard in New Zealand demonstrates our commitment to providing the best possible service to our customers. We are also committed to supporting the local economy and creating new job opportunities as we expand our presence in New Zealand.
“With our online platform, buyers can bid from anywhere in the world, making the purchasing process simple and convenient.”

Megalitre Meter
With 11 certified installers on staff and a wide range of meters available, Crighton’s Rural Engineering is helping inland NSW stay ahead of new water regulations
Landowners in Southern Inland NSW have until June 1 this year to ensure their water meters are up to date.
Launched in 2019, the changes to NSW’s non-urban water metering rules require new, tamper-proof water meters be installed at some water supply works in the state.
Back in 2020 the NSW Water Department predicted 7,380 sites in the inland southern region would need a new compliant meter installed to meet the updated guidelines.
All these water meters must be pattern approved, have a local intelligence device (LID) and tamperevident seals and be installed by a qualified person.
Based in Hay and serving properties all around the Riverina, the team at Crighton’s has been hard at work meeting this demand, installing water meter setups on pipes ranging from 50mm to 1,200mm in diameter.
With 11 certified meter installers and validators on staff, Crighton’s stocks and supplies a wide range of compliant, pattern approved water meters, including axial flow, submersible and mixed flow models.
Crighton’s spokesman James Bisset says the company’s most common meter installations are for river pumps – used for farm irrigation –and bores.
“One of Crighton’s larger metering projects was the major modernisation of the Hay Private Irrigation district,
where 112 pattern approved meters were installed as well as upgrading the major infrastructure and installing automated outlets to all farms within the district,” he says.
“Crighton’s is able to install and validate all varieties of water meters to ensure customers meet mandatory water meter compliance before June 1.”
Bisssett adds that Crighton’s will also advise customers how to maintain the water meter sites.
“Crighton’s were involved in the initial water NSW roll out of pattern approved meters, working alongside Water NSW metering fleet and we continue to work closely with Water NSW,” Bissett adds.
A family business now run by its third generation, and with more than 45 years of local knowledge, Crighton works with meters from Aussie, Bates, Macquarrie, Pomona and Kelly & Lewis.
But it also offers plant, pump and machinery hire, steel welding and fabrication and crane work and hire, up to 80 tonnes.
“Crighton’s prides itself on being able to supply you with the most precise and up-to-date solution to your needs,” Bissett says.

Perfect match
With an extensive range for hire, the team at A-One Lift Truck Services can find the perfect machine for you, whatever you’re doing
For Greg Morris and the team at A-One Lift Truck Services, finding the ideal machine for his customers is one of the joys of the job. Morris himself has more than 45 years’ experience in buying, selling, repairing and servicing all types of forklifts – today using that experience to ensure his customers have the right machine for their needs.
“Each forklift that comes into A-One Truck Services doesn’t leave unless it has been fully serviced and tested by me personally in the workshop,” he says.
“We will be sure to have what you are looking for and, if you are not too sure what you need for a certain job, give us a call or send an email enquiry.”
Today, A-One Lift Truck Services has more than 200 forklifts in its fleet, including models from Toyota, Komatsu, Crown, Linde, Dieci, Yale/Hyster, Genie and more. The group has diesel, electric, gas and petrol-powered forklifts in a variety of sizes, as well as a range of other material handling equipment – including telehandlers, pallet trucks and drum handlers – and essential attachments including bale clamps, jibs, slippers and ramps.
A-One forklifts can be hired for as low as $100 plus GST per week and offers no lockin arrangements on contracts both long and short, even down to a one-day hire.
Based in the Western Sydney suburb of Minchinbury, A-One Lift Truck Services has a fully qualified service team able to do anything from an oil change to a complete vehicle overhaul and offering a wide range of spare parts and forklift tyres.
It also has mobile service vans available for repairs on the work site where needed, with tilt trays drivers available to deliver in the Sydney metro area, with other deliveries able to be arranged in other areas as well.
A-One Lift Truck Services also offers what it says is Australia’s largest range of tow tugs – with petrol, diesel and electric models available alongside a large selection of trailers.
